Solve : Can you put linux on a Floppy disk??

Answer»

I NEED to somehow get *censored* Small Linux on a floppy or another linux version that will install from off of the floppy. The problem is I have a Toshiba laptop that only has 64mb of ram in it and a very small hard drive and the cd rom on it doesn't work. It's RUNNING windows 98 on it.

Any ideas? Maybe somehow split the program across multiple floppy's (that would be a last resort.)

Oh man it's a Satellite Pro 445CDT it doesn't even have a floppy drive on it.

The cd rom drive is bad or won't boot from first boot option under the bios. Could it be because I was using a RW cd instead of CD-R that threw it off?Quote from: Briguy on February 08, 2009, 02:27:28 PM

Try it with a CD-R, and then you'll know.
I have a Toshiba 440CDX. I can confirm that it will not read CD-RW discs, and additionally refuses to read Silver-Silver CD-Rs.Quote from: BC_Programmer on February 08, 2009, 03:40:42 PM
I have a Toshiba 440CDX. I can confirm that it will not read CD-RW discs, and additionally refuses to read Silver-Silver CD-Rs.

What's Silver-Silver Cd's? You talking about the color on the top of the cd?Sorry... here, I'll explain somewhat.

CD-Rs are manufactured with two layers, recording layer and a die layer- the two colors are expressed as reflective layer-dye layer.

the recording layer I think is more important to wether a device will recognize it- for example, some recordables are "yellow" on the bottom, a shiny gold, if you will. Others are pure silvery, and others are BLUISH... (I hope you know what I mean...)

As an example of the "Dye layer"- take a Playstation 1 disc, with the black underside. It's really just the die layer being coloured. It is transparent to the disc laser.

Anyway- some drives have difficulty with particular colour combinations.

I originally thought that my Drive had died... but it could still play audio CDs and factory CDs... I was trying all sorts of things to fix it... then I popped in an old backup CD-R (with BLUE reflective layer), and it read just fine. Unfortunately I still have a spindle of the buggers to go through, but thankfully(for me) I don't really use that laptop much.

the BEST CD-R's are manufactured by Taiyo Yuden, and are Gold-Green, really quite distinctive. Note that manufacturer is not the same as the distributor...

If in doubt- buy a small pack of the "most expensive" CD-Rs- for example, a 5-pack. Make sure it isn't lightscribe or special labels or whatnot that your paying for- you just want the discs. Hopefully you'll find success.

of course- if you have available CD-R with you, just test it out. Maybe my drive is just a crapster.Quote from: BC_Programmer on February 08, 2009, 04:13:16 PM

What BRAND of cd's worked on your laptop? And what color were they?the brand that worked on it were TDK, I believe. I don't have any nearby, but I think[/t] they had a bluish reflective layer (the metal part)

Solve : networking solaris 8 with my xp box and going online?

Answer»

i am rookie. i need to know how to get online and share FILES with my xp BOX. i have solaris 8(intel) on a dell box. xp on dell box. both run through a 4 port hub then to dsl router. can my solaris box use this to get online? how can i share files on my xp box? i set up DHCP on the solaris box. looks LIKE the router gave it an ip address(192.168.1.44, loopback 127.0.0.1). router is 192.168.1.1. i can ping router and xp box from solaris terminal WINDOW.... please help.... First you would have to set up a network share on Windows XP. Right-click the folder holding the files you want to share and choose Properies. Then go to the Sharing Tab.

Then you would have to install Samba on Solaris. Samba allows Linux/UNIX hosts to interact with a Windows server as if it were a Windows client.

You know, Solaris 8 is a nine-year-old operating system. You might want to look into upgrading to Solaris 10:

You must already KNOW that UNIX or some variation of it is widely used on both Corporate networks and for WEB site servers.

The security LEVEL arias widely. Mostly because some operators just do not pay enough attention it it.

For web site servers, the Linux system seems to be at present the most widely used variant of Unix.

There are many, many tutorials on Linux, mostly free.
IBM is into Linux.

I have played around VM recently, Both Microsofe's VIRTUAL PC and VMware-server by VMware. All my machines are Dual or Multi boot. Solve : how can i install fedora12 on xp??

Answer»

i have xp sp2 on C drive. i have I drive 10 GB. i want to install fedora on I drive. i created root-2000mb, boot-3000mb, home-1230mb,var-500mb, and swap-3000mb. but i unable to install fedora12. it shows not enough SPACE. plz help.A quick Google revealed that a FRESH install of Fedora 13 is around 9GB (which shouldn't be that much more than 12). Chances are you aren't partitioning your drive in a manner that gives it enough room to install the packages and what-have-you.

3000MB (3GB) is completely unnecessary for /boot. Try TAKING one ZERO off the end of that and reallocate that space to root.

Depending on how much RAM is installed on your machine, 3GB for swap may be too much as well. Try 2GB and give the rest to root.

Solve : Freespire?

Answer»

My Windows XP computer got INFECTED with a virus last week. I tried the recovery disk as I did not have important files on the hard drive. My goal was to just restore the hard drive to its original state. The disk would only GET 8% completed so I gave up and installed Freespire. I chose to instal Freespire to the entire drive. Now I'm thinking of buying Windows 7 and overwriting Freespire. Only problem is that I can no longer get to the part of the BOOT menu that says boot from CD. When I turn the comp on, it goes straight to Freespire. Pressing the "f" buttons does not HELP. Can anyone tell me how to clear Freespire off of my drive and install a new operating system?

Lou i tried freespire myself not long ago. i wasn't nuts about it, but it was ok. one nice THING about this situation, you can always go back to that disk if you have to.

i don't know how a windows 7 disk works, but an xp disk boots from the disk and there's a brief window where you have to press any key to boot from cd. it won't stay on that screen and if you were right there paying attention to it, you wouldn't have missed it. it sounds to me like it's not booting from disk at all.
did you by any chance change the bios to make the hard drive the first device in the boot order?

a couple of things that i can think of:

1. your bios is not configured to boot from cd first
2. your cd-rom could be defective/marginal

Solve : Which Linux is good for a old laptop??

Answer»

I want to install Linux on a old laptop that's probably has a 133mhz cpu on it. I want it to be as user friendly as you can get and work well with the limited specs that I have. Any names of ones to try?

133mhz Intel Toshiba Satellite. There are a few to try, it's all about trial and error. and seeing as the distros are free you can try as MANY os you like! First if your sytem spec is really low i'd try dsl (*censored* small Linux) http://damnsmalllinux.org/ It surprisingly a small and low resource Linux package, low on features and not especially user friendly.

Next i'd say Mandriva, I use it on one of my old laptops. Well established and a mix of features user friendliness and relatively low system resources. http://www.mandriva.com/

If you're looking for something that is closer to Windows and very user friendly i'd say Ubuntu. It's what i would suggest to a new Linux user. easy to transfer over from windows to Linux. but does come with higher system requirements. http://www.ubuntu.com/

All the distributions above are free to download and work as 'LiveCDs' which means if you burn them to CD you can boot to that CD and just run without Linux touching your hard drive, which is GREAT for testing and trying out the distro.

I think the model number is pa1241uvcd something like that. I assume it's a 133mhz cpu.

I was thinking I would put either windows 2000 pro or Linux. Trouble is the people I'm going to be giving it to are not very computer savvy. You could try putting Ubuntu on it, see what happens? that i think is the most user friendly.

FBWhat about puppy linux? I TRIED it and it does seem to me user friendly. I HEARD about Xubuntu but it requires to much ram to install.

Solve : removing of read only files?

Answer»

HI
I just bought an eeepc 900a because im travelling and wanted something cheap to use for internet surfing.
The eeepc came with linux, which is absolutely new to me.
I knew that it only had a 4 gb harddrive, but i didnt REALIZE that 3.5 gb were alrady occupied when i turned it on for the first time.
The pc comes with a lot of games i dont WANT, so i tried deleting them. The 'add/REMOVE program' option couldnt help, so i tried by commands. When i finally found the right directory and i tried to remove these game i recieved following feedback:

RM: cannot remove 'ppracer': Read-only file system

Is there anyway for me to get rid of all these games?

Please know that i had never ever worked with commands (not even DOS on my other pc) before today, so i NEED good explanations or links. Thank you
Well, now i figured out to "su" to root-user so it no longer complains when i "rm" the games i talked about. The problem is it doesn't free any space on the hard drive. How come?
plz help

So, you see no screen during startup where you can choose which OS to boot, right? You NEED to find the custom file and add Windows 7 to it if grub didn't PICK it up (unlikely) or run update-grub /dev/sda as root (assuming it is sda, and not HDA--run parted -l to see your list of drives).

Solve : Accessing thumb drive?

Answer»

How do I change from looking at the computer's hard drive to a USB thumb drive? Tried Mount but that did not work. Follow-up question--how do I identify the thumb drive's drive letter? ThanksUsually a thumbdrive is named a Removable Storage or a name by the Brand of the Thumb drive. If you want to see the actual, try opening up My Computer(windows explorer), then insert the Thumb drive on the usb port. When or if the usb is recognized/read then it will appear on Windows Explorer along with your other drives such as DVD/CD drive or Hard drive. USB inserted could also appear w/out Windows explorer with a Windows Prompt whether you want to open USB files or documents, Play music or movies(if there are music/movie contents) on installed media software. What version of linux?Arch LinuxQuote from: Solar Dude on October 04, 2010, 07:22:55 PM

Arch Linux

to my knowledge, No version of Linux refers to drives via drive letters; usually it's SOMETHING like /dev/sda or /dev/usb1 and so forth.

I installed Arch to a VM here but was unable to get a desktop environment installed (something wrong with my repository setup, so pacman couldn't update or install anything).

I tried a few things in the terminal but to no avail; I was able to "see" the USB drive via ls /dev/disk/by-label but was UNSURE how to mount it. (mount /dev/disk/by-label/CRUZER was my first try, that failed).

Since you probably have a desktop environment, and since that environment is probably SIMILAR to other WINDOWING environments, you generally access USB drives via the LEFT hand pane of your distros file explorer. (Nautilus is one example, Dolphin is another)I have never tried Linux Arch but I have Ubuntu 10.04LTS installed as a VM in VMware Player. A flash drive is recognized by Ubuntu upon being connected to the computer.

Solve : Please help the rookie?

Answer»

I am going to go online with a linux OS and want to add some kind of virus and spyware protection. Can anyone offer some suggestions.
Hello Smitty;
Currently USING SuSe Linux and feel very safe as a RESULT of the structure of SuSe Linux.
Most Linux's are safer online as a result of the file structure and if you recognize that you will be using your Linux as a User and not an Administrator this prevents any intrusion or damage to system files ..Again..If you set up 2 or more User's you will be able to switch to another User if any of your files become damaged allowing you to remove the user with damaged files.

Beginning on line with Linux is important to First update from the server of the distributor. (Your Linux Version)...This is where you will download security updates for protection.

However; There are anti Virus SOFTWARE that you can get for free from www.sourceforge.com, or Google "Linux ANTIVIRUS software" from other locations.

Another TIP is to go to your Distributor's web site and look for questions and answers in their forum.

"Clamav" and "Antivir" are popular antivirus for Linux

Glad you are using Linux and hope you will enjoy it as much as I.
tomThank you Tom this has been helpful.

Solve : Edit fluxbox login for all users?

Answer»

Hello, everyone.

I'm using fluxbox and I'd like to setup a computer or two where any user can sit down, login, and have the same startup process. I REALLY do not want to have to open all the ~/.fluxbox/startup files and sync them all to automatically open a power applet and the wireless applet--I want it to open as simple as Windows.

How can I apply fluxbox startup settings for all users? Where's the startup FILE all the users read off of?OK. For any others who are interested, here's what you need to do:

- Delete any GRAPHICAL login managers (though this won't look as pretty).
- Open /etc/bash.bashrc as root and edit it, adding the script you want (in this case, to turn on applets for all users) and save it.
- Logout and BACK in. Your changes should be applied as soon as you log in using the command LINE.

Solve : Which LINUX is the best??

Answer»

I found many of them around like Fedora, Ubuntu, ....
Which is the best?
(I know this information is not enough, but I don't know what else shall I add. )It all depends on the hardware, what you want, and what you like.
There are thousands of DIFFERENT LINUX distributions, so it's impossible to say which is the best.Thanks.I am downloading Ubuntu Linuxm a whole of 698.xx MB.Hello Ashutosh
Good that you are going to Linux.

When you ask that question you will get many different feelings.

I have SuSe 10.3 and love it.
Seldom use Windows or MS products

Reason choosing SuSe was from experience earlier with an old laptop that could not be upgraded.
Tried Mandrake, Redhat, and an early version of SuSe.. The key to enjoyment is how well the OS will configure and that SuSe was greatest at configuring the hardware on that THING...8gb drive, dialup modem, zipdrive and monitor were obsolete stuff.

Love the configuration tools and the support from a large community make it enjoying.
Current with newer laptop, Duel boot with Winxp set with file system Fat32 and in Linux able to go into XP..and manipulate files.. With SuSe came an huge amount of SOFTWARE.. VM software that is not configured as yet, is the next project to run XP under this Linux and never have to go back.

Well as you can see..Your question will bring out feelings about what is the best.
Good luck
tom Thank you for you experience, Tom.

Solve : Ubuntu LINUX, booting from CD?

Answer»

I have downloaded the latest version of Ubuntu LINUX and GOING to burn it to a disk.
I have got the steps and all ready for BOOTING into LINUX, please check if anything is going wrong:

  • SET BIOS so that it boots the disk first.
  • After saving the SETTINGS, PC will reboot.
  • Insert the disk just after the PC has rebooted.

Now the question is how to shut down the LINUX and while booting back or that, will I get chance to enter the BIOS menu to set the HDD as the boot device. You will continue to get whatever info your computer currently provides, in the sense that, unless you're getting a "splash screen" with a brand that "covers" what the computer is doing while it boots up, you should still see a brief display of the video card TYPE and video RAM, followed by the Power On Self Test, at which time you can enter BIOS, and make system changes before the computer actually boots the operating system which it's going to run. Thanks for help.
So, it is - insert the disk before the info is shown, ain't it?
Secondly, does LINUX have a decent 'Shut Down' option (like Windows)?
And:
How to get back to Windows after having done with LINUX?Yes, Ubuntu has good shutdown options, like Windows.

You might try to run Ubuntu Live! from the CD. It will run slower, because it has to access the CD for everything, but you can try it before you actually install it.

Are you planning on installing Ubuntu "over" your Windows installation? Are you going to try to install it on an empty partition on your current drive? No I want to have windows until I'm very fine with it and even after that.
Somebody on the chat, don't remember who it was said that Ubuntu will ruin the Master Boot Record of windows if I try to install on a partition.
Do we get to enter the BIOS menu at LINUX boot?
And are the steps for Live CD Boot correct?

Solve : vi and crypt?

Answer»

I have some files which were encrypted using an OLD version
of vi -- vi -X myfile.enc

These files do not decrypt using the vi / vim package that I
just installed under Ubuntu Linux / netbook edition.

The files PROPERLY decrypt with crypt < myfile.enc > myfile

It APPEARS that the newer version of vi uses a different
encryption algorithm than the old. Is there a switch or a
different version of vi that will properly decrypt the files?

Solve : help please...?

Answer»

Hi to all of you...I need help cause i installed UBUNTU from the Live CD and the installation got stuck at 33%(because of insufficient disk space)...Then i got "Error loading OS" nxt time i started my pc...

I tried fixboot and fixmbr and now im getting a new MSG : "NTLDR is missing" !

What do i need to do guys...I have files that i dont want to lose

Thx for helping me...Hello Icat;

Don't panic help is just a few clicks away.
Noticed that you are able to get online some how so there is a link below that will get your information.

NTLDR is a standard boot loading file for almost all Windows.

Glad your going into the Linux Community.

Now ..Once you get your windows back it is important to Back up windows to CD ..Then go to "My Computer and RIGHT click on drive C: and at the BOTTOM of the menu click "PROPERTIES" to determine how much disk space is being used.
While you are there click "Tools" and use the error CHECKING, most important is the "Defragmenter" that should be run 3-4 times in a row to clean and have a clean disk before installing Linux. This takes time so be patient.

Solve : ESXi 3.5 hangs during shutdown?

Answer»

I'm running VMWare ESXI 3.5u4 on a ProLiant DL760 G2 and whenever I try to reboot it with "halt" or "reboot" from an ssh login it hangs during shutdown and the only WAY out is to force a power off.

However, when I tell it to shutdown or reboot from the VMWare INFRASTRUCTURE Client it shuts down cleanly.

There's no point asking VMWare as USING ssh on ESXi is unsupported, but I wondered if ANYONE here knows what I'm missing, as I guess there's a service I need to shutdown before the "halt"

BTW, the reason I don't want to use the GUI is because sometimes I want to shut it down remotely using an ssh client on my mobile phone.

PS: I put the post here as the ESX service console is based on a variant of linux.

Solve : Best Linux Distro?

Answer»

Hello

I'm Looking for A free linux distro with a theme to make it look identical to mac osx i found one and thought it was opensuse it wasnt, can anyone think of something else ?Make linux look like a macOr if you want a distro that'll look more like the Mac Os X out-of-the-box try gOS 2.9 Space. You can download it here: ftp://linuxfreedom.com/gos/gos-space-20080406-1226.iso. Here is a SCREENSHOT: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/59/GOS_space.png.

However support wont continue for too long so I would follow the instructions by 2x3i5x. It will be a bit more work but it'll be WORTH it. So I recommend installing Ubuntu 10.04 and then following the previous instructions.I just "Converted" to Linux from Windows. (I have a LOT of experience with the windows OS) I have just LOADED a Linux Distribution called Puppy Linux 5.1.0 (It uses the binaries from Ubuntu Linux ) This Distribution Of Linux is very light and easy to use I am using it on a Dell Dimension 4600 Pentium4 (North wood) 2.4 Ghz with 768MB Ram a 40 GB (formatted to an EXT2) Hard drive as boot and a 100( Formatted to a NTFS) as storage. This Distribution is fast and is not a big hog on resources. I think It is better than Ubuntu. package management is easy the JWM inter face is nice.

To me this is one of the better Distributions of Linux I have tried.

DM1, Congratulations & welcome to Linux. I do really hope that you ENJOY Linux as an operating system. It does have a learning curve but if you ever need help try posting here or give me a PM and I'll do my best to help you. Whatever distro you use XFCE4 has many mac themes available and is much lighter on resources than gnome...might be worth considering...

actually these themes would probably be useable in Gnome anyway as they are GTK2 based.

Solve : Linuxmint debian won't open?

I honestly don't think it matters which distro you use. The DIFFERENCES between them are not as great as their similarities. If you want to be one of those people who play with distros, go AHEAD. Play with three or four and then go back to Windows. Linux is more than a toy OS however, and if it is really for you you won't really care which one you use.

Solve : retrieve a previously entered command - Linux?

Answer»

I've attempted to determine how to retrieve a previously command . My experience is basically Windows/DOS command line using the arrow direction keys.. This saves a lot of extra typing...

Perhaps someone has an idea.....

linux/unix typically allows each user to retrieve their previously entered commands using the up arrow key, and unlike Windows, the history extends to previous logins.

Have you tried it?

Pressing the UP arrow will return to previous commands.

To return to a previously entered command, TYPE ctrl-r and then begin typing the command. This will finish the command for you as you type. If you can REMEMBER to use ctrl-r, it will become invaluable for repeating longer commands.

To find a specific command among many previous commands; pipe history through grep:
history|grep -i first few letters of command

Also you have the history command.

http://webtools.live2support.com/linux/history.php

I've tried the arrow keys.. no success... I forgot to mention that I'm
remote accessing the Linux server using SSH - ACTUALLY Secure CRT...

It must be SSH that's interfering... the arrow keys result in a wierd display..

e.g.

Last login: Sat Dec 13 17:31:04 2008 from 10.244.142.7

Maybe this will help...

Code: [Select]SecurerCRT is just a dumb terminal emulator. The command
history and recall features are part of your shell. ASSUMING your
shell is /usr/bin/sh or /usr/bin/ksh, add these lines to /etc/profile
(so all users will have this feature):

export HISTFILE=$HOME/.sh_history
export HISTLINES=2000
export EDITOR=/usr/bin/vi
set -o vi

Now login again and you'll see your command history. Useful commands:

history
history -20

history is an alias to fc -l and fc is a shell built-in command. man sh-posix
or man ksh. You can type r ### where ### is the line number of a
command line shown by history.

You can use ESC / to recall previous commands by searching for a string.
Use + or - to move up and down once you have recalled a command.

Just a thought: Is your local machine running Windows or Linux? You may need to get the key mappings right.

My local machine is running Windows (T42 laptop).. I thought about the key
mapping but I suspect its the remote machine which is the issue here...
Don't know ....Have you tried the history command, and the ESC / keys, and + and - ?
The history command works.. the esc / key COMBINATION, the + and - do not..

At this point, with the history command, I guess the best way to repeat a cmd in the history list is using the r # cmd...

Solve : Installing Ubuntu v10.04.1 LTS 64-bit?

Answer»

I was installing Ubuntu, and I think I've got myself a problem.

I have WINDOWS 7 installed on my computer. The partitions were setting up as follows:
100 MB for the boot sector
687 GB for drive C:
15 GB for Win7 drive image

This is what I did. I went to "Disk Management" and shrunk the volume for drive C to make a 100GB space for Ubuntu. I left the space "unallocated", rebooted the computer using the disc that I made with the 64-bit version of Ubuntu. I clicked the button to try out Ubuntu. When I got to the desktop, I clicked System > Administration > GParted.

I selected the "non-allocated" 100 GB AREA to have GParted to partition for Ubuntu.

Here is where my problem is... after partitioning the area. I go to System > Administration > Install Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS... I follow the prompts and when I get to the step to install to a partition...nothing shows up in the box for what partition I want to install to. So I shut the computer down, TAKE out the Ubuntu disc, and the computer freezes.

I put the disc back in to reboot to Ubuntu, run GParted and instead of seeing all the AVAILABLE partitions... I see 1...YES 1 partition that is 687 GB that is "unallocated".

I'm guessing that Win7 is completely off my computer. What the heck???

How can I get Win7 back??? My computer didn't come with a disc. I guess I'm screwed!!!

What should I do now???Can you boot into Windows 7 at all?No. After CMOS, I get a flashing cursor in the top left-hand corner.

Solve : using the left/right arrow keys on the line command to position and edit?

Answer»

I am using SecureCRT to remote access to a Linux server from a T42 laptop.
I'm having an issue when attempting to EDIT a LINE command.
When I make a typing error, I can't use the left/right arrow keys. I don't KNOW if I'll be able to delete/insert characters on the command line since I haven't gotton that far.

VI presents no issues, the arrow keys work as I'm used to.

Using session options I've attempted to map the left arrow key to:

EXTENDED combination function

Extended-VK_LEFT VT_CURSOR_LEFT

This hasn't worked for me.

Anyone have any ideas?

Solve : Linux as a popular Desktop Operating System??

Knew I was missing something. Thanks for pointing that out. Been meaning to give Ubuntu Tweak a try.

It just seems easier to not have to install anything, THOUGH. Just open a terminal and type gconf-editor, find the right entry, and change it. Takes me all of 7 seconds, if not less.

That's not the point, though. The point is, as stated, the *need* for terminals in 'normal' desktop use is diminishing. Quote from: SilentAssasin64 on September 09, 2010, 01:52:16 PM

It depends on how comfortable the user is with the Terminal. There are some task for which I use the the Terminal and others the GUI. For example if I wanted to install 10 programs it would be a lot easier to do Code: [Select]sudo apt-get install program1 program2 program3 program4 program5 program6 program7 program8 program9 program10 in Terminal. It would take a lot LONGER to do that task in Synaptic. There are definitely USES for the terminal.

Another example: I was helping someone with their Vista laptop. They had a folder on their computer that could not be deleted (Vista said they didn't have permission but he/she was an administrator)! On Ubuntu I would bring up terminal and run "gksudo nautilus", then I would just delete the file. Deleting it in Ubuntu is a lot easier. I've done that as well. For instance, right now I'm going through my Trash, shredding all the files, then deleting them permanently. I find it much easier to do a 'shred -vn3 * && rm *' than to go through and do it all in Nautilus. Quote from: CITYSCAPE on September 09, 2010, 02:08:04 PM

Well, was the folder empty? Or perhaps you have the folder open or you have something contained in the folder still in use by the system? Most likely reasons for not having permission even though you are administrator.|EQuote from: Cityscape on September 09, 2010, 02:08:04 PM

It did boot a Ubuntu CD I put it, but then said ERROR READING CD, and rebooted and didnt boot from CD again.
I've tried tons of different CDs, linux and non, NONE work.

Phoenix - AwardBIOS 6.00PGCheck cable. Try a different CD drive. CHECK boot order in BIOS. Review CD STORAGE practices. If a new build, review assembly quality, check RAM is compatible & seated properly.

Solve : Help, i desperately need help?

Answer»

I have 2 teenage daughters, and I suspect they are involved in inappropriate ACTIVITIES in the internet. They both have computers in their rooms. :
One of them has internet connection through a network cable plugged into the DSL router. She her computer uses the windows operating system. She also uses microtrend internet security. I strongly suspect that she's having inappropriate late night conversations with yahoo messenger. I know she deletes her chat log every night and CLEARS her browser history.
Daughter #2 has a network cable running from the first computer's router to her wireless router in her bedroom. She uses her laptop with a wireless network adapter. Her computer is running Windows XP, and she also uses microtrend internet security. She is also misusing yahoo messenger, she deletes her yahoo message archive every night and clears her firefox browser history.
They both deny any inappropriate activities. I don't want to take away computers or completely shutdown internet access unless I have solid proof that they are actually doing SOMETHING wrong. My laptop is loaded with the latest Debian distro, and I have very limited PROGRAMMING skills. Since I'm an administrator on both routers and both computers, it seems that there is something I should be able to do to monitor their internet activities, just long enough to be sure that nothing inappropriate or dangerous is going on. My daughters are 15 and 16, and are reasonably computer literate. I tried pearanal controls, but they know how to turn them off. Please HELP, There must be a way for me to monitor computer traffic in my own house.
Thanks in advance for any help you might be able to offer.
DonIf you want advice... here you are...

They both have computers in their rooms.
This is the first thing that caught my mind. Surely it's not necessary to have them in their rooms. Family room, kitchen table, etc. are better locations.

Solution #1:
Depending on the router you have, you can turn on the logs... meaning it'll log anything that goes through it. It might show it in cryptic format (e.g. IP addresses you'll have to look up), but it'll be an unclearable record unless they know the password.

Solution #2:
If they are clearing their history, then that's probable cause right there. Mention to them to stop clearing their history. You're the boss.

Solution #3:
Sometimes there are parental controls on the routers.... you might check those as well. This is the best option in my opinion.

Solution #4:There are dozens of webfilters out there... Besafe online to name one. Choose one, make up a password, and your problem is solved. Unless they know the password you can be fairly sure the problem is solved.

IM I'm not so experienced with... I'm fairly sure that #2 and#4 would solve it, but not completely sure.

I think the last two are the best solutions-- they communicate your love for them rather than distrust.

Solve : Regular Expression Help (Searching name patterns)?

Answer»

Quote from: Sidewinder on September 01, 2010, 05:14:23 AM

I'm not understanding the reasoning of building a regex pattern that specifically masks upper case letters (Mister, Miss, M) and then directing the regex engine to run in case insensitive mode.
You are not wrong. INITIALLY, i was only doing for Mr, Mrs, Ms so i USED character class. Later on, I found that i have to do Mister, Miss etc so I chose to use -i, without changing those upper cases.

Mister, Miss can be written as mister, miss, since I am using the -i option anyway. Same as [Mm]. It can be written just without character class. so essentially its just

CODE: [Select]grep -Pio "(m[rs][s]*\.*|mister|miss)\s+\w+[- \t,]*\w+[ \t]*" file

its good to learn them, but they are also not the holy grail. regex performs string manipulations for you "behind the scenes", using its own language. For example, check for beginning of line starting with "ABC" --> /^ABC/.

In your favourite language, for example if i were to do it in Python,

Code: [Select]if string.startswith("ABC") or if string[:3]=="ABC"
The logic behind is to do a substring from first character to 3rd and perform a comparison with "ABC". LIKEWISE, with other operations, you are able to do it just with using your language's own string manipulation functions.

That line of ghost and sidewinder left was exactly what I was looking for. thanks for all your help. I did get it working. I am also going to check that program out that sidewinder posted.

Solve : Exciting Day?

I am fairly competent with computers, have been using them for quite some time. Recently I decided to upgrade my OS knowledge by adding Linux familiarity to my repertoire, good idea right? Added a GRUB boot manager with a linux ext3 partition and Ubuntu. So then I recently decided to change my linux distro from Ubuntu over to backtrack3 in an attempt to upgrade my computer security knowledge as well.

Unfortunately BT3 doesn't come with the installer like BT2 did. They are aiming for a VM/LiveCD/USB system and are trying to avoid HDD installs. I wanted HDD anyway and proceeded with, while extremely tired, deleting my Ubuntu partition, running into problems and then reinstalling Ubuntu while letting Ubuntu automatically manage the partition settings.

For those who don't quite realize why you are laughing yet, Ubuntu reformatted my hard DRIVE and overwrote the windows sectors. I just turned my multiboot box into a test platform for linux. YAAAAA!!!! MERRY CHRISTMAS ME I DELETED EVERYTHING I HAVE!!!!

(fortunately most of the important crap was backed up multiple times)

So now I think IMMA TAKE up programming too so sometime in the future I can contribute lol.oh yes, side note, dont reformat, or repartition, play with the MBR/GRUB/Lilo etc while extremely tired. Quote from: Valadur on December 19, 2008, 04:58:52 PM

You obviously don't use Linux. In recent years, Linux has become easier to use than Windows. I use Windows at work and am constantly frustrated with it. I use 4 different distros of Linux at home and enjoy their diverse strengths.

You don't have to use a terminal window for anything anymore. But many users, including me, make good use of the Bash shell because it is extremely powerful and quick. Why would I want to click and wait through a series of steps (the Windows way) to do something that I do all the time when I can just write a small script to do it all at once?

Solve : Alternative to XP?

I am wondering whether to a different OS other than XP but know very little about how to go about it or what to use.

I have a spare HDD which I could use (for say Ubuntu) but would be grateful for some advice. Excuse my lack of knowledge but can I download it over the net and then transfer it to my spare spare HDD?

And what is generally considered a good ALTERNATIVE to XP?

I know this is fairly basic stuff but I am learning as I go along.

Any help GRATEFULLY received.
You can download what is called a Live-CD for Ubuntu or any other distro for that matter. I would download ubuntus Live-CD and boot from that to try it out before you install anything. It will run slower from the CD than it will from the hard drive but other than that it should run basically the same. If you like it than you can install it to that spare hard drive.

Another option that Ubuntu puts on there Live-CD is the Wubi installer. You can install Ubuntu like any other windows app through windows to try it out. You asked if you download Ubuntu. Yes.
Here: http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

You will have to burn it to a CD, and then boot from it.Quote from: outlaws42 on January 05, 2009, 03:50:49 AM

Hi, mate

Thanks for your help.

If I understand you correctly I can download Ubuntu over the net, save it to my desktop then copy it onto a CD? This presumably won't affect my existing XP set-up and I could just put the CD in and boot up from that to try it out? However, if I can't get the hang of it I can just carry on using my existing XP set-up as now?

I've heard that you have to change the BIOS settings which I am very wary of doing as I have INADEQUATE knowledge of that sort of thing is that true, please?

You download the image file. Then you will have to burn the .ISO image to a CD with a CD burning software that will burn image files. If yours won't this one will http://cdburnerxp.se/download.php .

Many computers now a days boot from the CD first then the HD. I would just stick the CD in then reboot your computer and see if it boots to the CD. If not, some computer manufactures have alternate boot options if you hit a function key at boot. Dell i believe is F12 and Gateway I think is F8.You can also WRITE a Ubuntu ISO to a USB stick and boot from that much like a CD, that includes the option to install the distro should you decide to.

Other alternatives to Windows would include something like Puppy Linux, its about a 95mb download depending on which version you wish to download.

Ubuntu, Xubuntu and Puppy are my recommendations.

Check out my Xubuntu screenshot to see what Xubuntu Linux looks like.

I have a doubt REGARDING the processes and threads.....The theoretical conceptions are clear by far.But i haven't received any practical and visual clarification of a thread.I can see how processes exist in a computer while an OS is running but concerning threads am really doubtful.

Could anybody plzzz clear my quest by showing where actually threads exist in a process and whether do threads keep running even when the process is eliminated....actually i need a visual and a practical picture of threads and processes....any help would be highly acknowledged

nishant tiwariAFAIK a thread is part of a process. If a process is killed then all threads associated with that process die.

An example of where you'd use processes would be for the bash shell. Each time you process a command, you'd fork a sub-process the EXECUTE it.

An example of where you'd use threads would be for software raid DRIVER (esp during parity recovery). You could lauch a whole load of threads to read the disk blocks asynchronously, and then whichever STRIPE came back first you could RECONSTRUCT the missing data from parity, and if the last read to complete was for the first block then you'd only have one parity calculation left to compute, because the other threads had already completed everything else whilst this thread was waiting.

Is there any information that you could share, or simply POINT me in the right direction?Well, 'touch' changes the access and modification times of a file, and 'diff' compares files line by line to FIND any differences between the two.
You didn't mention any error messages, so it is hard to diagnose what is happening. The first things to check would be the file permissions on the programs, which should be in either the /bin or /usr/bin directories, and make sure the execute permission is set. Then see how the programs are being called - if the user you are working with is just using the program names 'touch' and 'diff', try using the full path to make sure it's not a problem with the environment.

Solve : How can I live with GRUBB??

Answer»

How can I live with GRUBB? I did a Google on that and got offers to buy a book by somebody named GRUBB who lived somewhere
OH NO! Do I have to read a WHOLE BOOK
I installed Ubuntu 8.10 on my WINDOWS 2000 machine and GRUBB put it at the bottom of the boot menu. I would like iWIN 2K to be at the top, or at least be the default. Please, I am so arid. Been playing with Linux off and on for years, but the GRBB stuff is new to me. I learned on LILO. But I don't want to rewrite the boot thing with LILO. It might goof up.It can do that. I know.
What is the EASY way to change the default in GRUBB? I don't remember about GRUBB though you should be able to change the order in Linux. otherwise load up in windows and download easyBCD (that's a direct link). that will enable you to manage your boot options.

FBLearning to spell it properly might be a start. Then you can type "grub tutorial" into Google and have some chance of finding something USEFUL.
Ash. Can't spiel it, can't say it, can't find it! I am so embarrassed.
It was so much easier with Lilo. And I can spelt it and say it. I never came in contact with LILO.
Happy with GRUB and PUPPY LINUX.Edit the file /boot/grub/menu.lst, find the section that DEALS with your Windows install, and move it above the rest of the boot entries.Quote

Edit the file /boot/grub/menu.lst,
Thanks, I will try that.

Solve : Postfix refuses POP clients after mysqlizing back end?

Answer»

Hello,

I have attempted to mysqlize the backend of my postfix config. Since doing that I have not been able to connect to my server via pop CLIENTS. I am using COURIER as my pop server. I am suffering authentication failures even though the correct username and password are supplied.

Here is my main.cf file

http://paste.debian.net/25166/

And these are the supporting files that are SUPPOSED to convert my postfix CONFIGURATION to a mysql backend.

http://paste.debian.net/25167/
http://paste.debian.net/25168/
http://paste.debian.net/25169/
http://paste.debian.net/25170/
http://paste.debian.net/25171/
http://paste.debian.net/25172/

And here are my (sanitized) log files:

This is really driving me crazy, any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

Solve : Installing LINUX, Tips?

Answer»

Anybody could give any tips about installing linux on my XP Pro SP3?
Know any good free partitioning SOFTWARE?
Thanks!
Hello Ashutosh;

Suse Linux has one of the best tools that installs with good recommendation for partitioning and safe as any recommend or changes you would like to make will not effect your partition until your ready to install..Free, it is in the package.

Good luck
tomCurrent versions of many Linux didtros have partitioning software. The hard part is that is if your NTFS is already damaged it can really mess it up. So first you make sure the files system and the drive is in perfect condition.
But maybe you want to try something that works in windows. Here is one that is free and easy to use: http://www.partition-tool.com/
I have used it and it works OK.I just found this SITE:

http://goodbye-microsoft.com/

Suppposedly you download the program and it installs Linux for you while you're still in windows. (I THINK they get you Debian linux though)You can download ubuntu and install ubuntu RIGHT inside windows. And you can also uninstall it in case you are not satisfied with it (but I doubt you would uninstall it just because you didn't like it! )Quote from: jerryheavyarms on December 21, 2008, 10:16:37 AM

(but I doubt you would uninstall it just because you didn't like it! )

LOL it happened as you said...
Its for high performance PCs and mine is not one...
It wont start correctly..
Now I'm happy with Puppy LINUX.
