Solve : Linux Installation Advice?

Answer»

I have P4 1.5 ghz, 256MB Ram and 20 GB harddisk partitionad as C:8gb with Windows XP pro on it and D:11 Gb with data on it. I want to install Redhat 9 on that computer as DUAL boot.
What should I do? I am asking about partitioning and disk space issues. Personal Desktop option would FIT for now. What kind of problems may I encounter during installation?

Come on GX_1 With a 20 gig drive and XP taking a LOT of space, that is a tall order.

I would load XP on a 13 gig C drive with the drive formatted as FAT32. Leave the rest of the space unpartitioned. When you load Linux it will create a partition for it and a swap partition to take up the remaining space. You will also automatically get a boot loader installedto choose your O/S at boot up.

That's really cramping the space, but it would be workable. Linux can read and write to FAT32 with no problem (not so with NTFS), so the data could be accessed by either O/S. A separate XP partition/data partition has no REAL advantage.

What Linux are you thinking of?RedHat9. With Personal Desktop option.
If I FORMAT my drive with ext2 or 3 etc... during Linux Installation it won't be accessible from Windows? And how boot loader works is it show up at the startup like when you have eg Win 98 and Win XP?Windows doesn't read Linux , but Linux READS FAT32. Use Ext3 or ReiserFS (I think Reiser was available on RH9)

Yes you will get a pretty boot manager to start Windows or Linux (in text or graphical mode).Thanks GX. I 'll be back , as things go further...

Solve : Impressed with Mint 14.1 KDE Pre-Install Live Environment?

Answer»

Not a request for help, but just sharing what happened with Mint 14.1 KDE DVD which is cool!

So I fired up my computer earlier today forgetting that I burned Linux Mint 14.1 KDE to a DVD last night and forgot to remove the DVD from the drive. I turned computer on and walked out of room to go get breakfast to bring back to PC and to my surprise I quickly saw looking at the display that I forgot to pop the disc out last night.

So instead of SHUTTING it down and booting to Windows 7, I decided to see what features are operational without installation. To my surprise the browser that is common to just about all preinstallation Linux discs actually had FLASH fully operational!! All others I used in the past I was able to surf the web, but the plugins were MISSING etc, but on this Distro the preinstall environment had all the necessary plugins.

So I went to youtube and was able to play music videos while I ate my cereal. I really thought that I was going to have to shut it down and remove the disc and boot to Windows 7 to watch the music videos. Two thumbs up to whoever made the fully functional browser happen with Linux Mint 14.1. Now I am curious as to when they implemented this. Its been a while since I ran Ubuntu, Fedora, or Mint in a Live CD or DVD type environment to surf the web. I usually use the live environment for getting into virus infected drives where the virus cant operate to make corrections etc or use the hard drive utility that gives tons of info on hours run, how many sectors reallocated etc.Quote from: DaveLembke on May 09, 2013, 07:38:49 PM

Yes. That is because Linux Mint's development and guiding principle isn't an idiotic rhetoric about free software but rather one about making their software as usable and functional as possible; A free bag of terd is still a terd, and Many Linux advocates seem to think otherwise; and they shove that bag of terd in people's faces. "This is Linux, look how great it is! Don't mind the smell, because it's FREE! TAKE IT!". The people behind mint, however, have essentially taken a different approach. Instead of trying to give away bags of terd on the general premise that they are free, they instead take the revolutionary approach of instead giving away bags of chocolate. They look the same on the surface- but they smell different, and Mint, for me, has always 'smelled better', to take the analogy to it's absurd conclusion.
BTW, this has been the case for every Mint Live CD as far as I remember. They have two versions: one version that removes the stuff they aren't allowed to use because RMS says (or, perhaps ironically, dictates) that it is bad for freedomz, and another where they take the approach of giving people a useful DESKTOP environment that requires as little initial configuration as possible.

Quote
Now I am curious as to when they implemented this.
I seem to recall it working fine since at least Mint 7. Though I had that on a USB stick and may have done some initial setup to get Flash working.

BC Stated: You know you don't have to feed your PC, right?

Had a good laugh at this. I guess I should proof read before I post

Also the analogy stated was perfect in relation to Linux distros in comparison to each other. I try to avoid claiming that one is better than others, or more specifically stating that others are terds. I have seen men at a Linux convention get into a heated argument/discussion between Fedora and Ubuntu and they argued as if it was politics they were discussing over " Unity " which would change the course of the world vs just 2 distros that already have a healthy following and its not like they cant coexist.

Personally I relate all distros to Ice Cream. I may not like all flavors. And may have a favorite flavor now. But if a new flavor becomes available, I'd try it and either accept it or reject it.

Ubuntu though with Unity has made toppings manditory to their flavor, and what if you want the Ubuntu flavor without the toppings, but plain. The toppings can be removed probably, but it gives the consumer the sense that its being forced upon them, and who wants to have to take the time and extra effort to remove the toppings before consuming it, when they can just have their newest favorite flavor MINT which is perfect as dished out.

If only Ice Cream was FREE!!!!

This statement sparked my interest. Went on in google search for info on this RMS. http://rmsgnulinux.com.ar/about

Thanks for stating this. That saved me from burning discs of older Mint distros or having to format a thumb drive and make it a bootable linux.

Thanks for sharing.

Just realized checking back on this that at least the statement of:

wasn't jabbed at, As in the other form of turn on...LOL

Note to self:

Yeah, it's been that way since I first tried it at version 8, probably before. It just works. That's why people like it so well.

If you think that's cool, check this out. If you wanted to install from that CD, you could minimize the installer to the menu bar, open firefox, and watch youtube/surf the web while the installer is running. You could even play a game or run any other program(s) while waiting. Pretty cool huh? You don't have to watch those install screens or find another computer to play around on while it's installing.

You can even install programs from a live cd if you want. So if you booted and older version of ubuntu and wanted to watch youtube from the live cd, you can just install it through the softare center. It's all just in system ram though, so you would have to do it each time...Quote

I installed a complete version - operating system, all apps and all updates in 11 minutes last night. Compare that with 2 + hours for Windows then installing all the apps + spyware, adware, virus removers, etc.

Solve : Solaris IX: Redirecting output tar xf?

Answer»

Does anyone KNOW how to redirect the output of "tar xf"? I tried several plausible syntax combinations based on the manual and UNIX in a Nutshell and none of them worked, although there were several combinations that did absolutely nothing at all. What do you want to redirect? The stderr? Standard Unix pipes work in Solaris, but what exactly are you trying to do?Redirect the files.

I found something online that said that putting the -C switch in front of the output directory should work, but I tried that and it didn't.Where do you want to redirect the files?To a subdirectory below the current directory.You wouldn't do that through redirection then. Go to the directory where you want the files to appear, then issue the COMMAND: tar xf /path/to/file.tarOh, thanks.Here's an example of when you might ACTUALLY want to redirect tar output.

If I want to copy data from one filesystem to another, depending upon what whim takes my fancy, instead of using
Code: [Select]cp -pr sourcedir destdir
sometimes I use tar instead, redirecting via stdout and stdin
Code: [Select]( cd sourcedir ; tar CF - . ) | ( cd destdir ; tar xfB - )
I suppose this could be more useful I wanted to compress the data, and pipe it through ssh to another host.You may as well just use rsync for that job, which would be considerably more efficient.

Solve : Ubuntu + internet?

Hi there, I have installed the newest version of UBUNTU but a have a problem: I can't connect to the internet. I only have an connection with the installed pc by a WIRELESS usb adapter (from g-link) and I think it doesn't work because I can NEVER find a place to insert my wep-key. Does anyone knows how I connect to my router/internet :-? (by the way, it isn't the fould of my hardware, because a few weeks ago I got still windows on it and there was no problem with connecting)

Blackberry You need to check the manufacturer's site first of all to see if they have released a driver for Linux. After that Google for linux + driver + the name/model number of your hardware. Sometimes it can be a bit of a search, but probably someone has WRITTEN a driver for this.D-Link + Linux has historically been a problem for wireless cards, although some of the newer releases do work. The problem is with D-Link who do not release drivers, and constantly change the chipset without any kind of notification. This is the danger of the Window-centric world.

Solve : Obsolete & Missing Linux Distros, such as Mint 1.0 to 3.0?

Answer»

Anyone have any suggestions for a good site that has "clean" obsolete distros, when the original makers of the distros no longer offer them from their site or linked mirrors?

Out of curiosity I decided to try to hunt down Linux Mint 2.0 the first stable release to try out on an old laptop, and Linux Mint's website that offers links to many worldwide mirrors for at least USA, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia that I searched all went as far back as 3.1 when the website shows links to all, but no mirrors found here go back PAST 3.1 for Mint.

2.0 Barbara Ubuntu Edgy Obsolete since April 2008.
1.0 beta Ada Kubuntu Dapper Obsolete. Unstable.

As copy/pasted from here: http://www.linuxmint.com/oldreleases.php

I have been using Mint since version 6 'Felicia', ( after using Ubuntu 7.04 'Feisty Fawn' prior to that ), and it is my #1 choice for Linux distro. Currently running Mint 14 'Nadia' Cinnamon 32-bit.

Found it interesting that Mint 1.0, 2.0, 2.1, 2.2, and 3.0 are no longer available from the Main Linux Mint site and mirrors, which I believe should offer it for download even if only a few people a year may ever download such an old distro. SEEN some available on google hunting for specific distros, but even though I have yet to find a poisoned distro, I like to get them from a known clean source which is usually directed from the makers of the distro if not readily available directly from the maker of the distro. I would never use such an old distro for anything important like online banking etc, but even if it is to be used for low/no risk applications its nice to have it a known clean state ISO ( even if the distro has security flaws/vulnerabilities given its age and dropped support to patch.)

I was thinking there was a website such as Linux Heaven or something like that that someone told me many years ago that was the final resting archive/download location for obsolete distros, but not finding it, so maybe its gone or named something completely different.

Just out of curiousity I also looked into old versions of Fedora and they have an archive to get the older distros from, but I ran out of time to dig further and cant check from here at work. There was a readme file at the location of versions earlier than 7 that gave you url to their archive path. Mint should also have something like this given its not much work to add to their website and these days storage of ISO's is not a problem with massively large drives available.Pardon me, was it not one of the goals of Mint? Namely, to stop the madness of keeping old versions around forever?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_Mint
Some education SITES just might have it somewhere. Or maybe another fan of early Mint distros rs would have it in his personal stuff.
Did you already post this non http://forums.linuxmint.com/ and not nget an answer?
If you got a Linux Mint 2.0 CD, what would you do with it?
found this online I am a little unsure of the site but it says there is 1 peer.

Solve : glx freeze?

Answer» I recently installed fedora 6 on my computer without an internet connection. things SEEM to work fine, except this.
I can't figure out how to install an rpm without an internet connection. when i DOUBLE click it, it comes up with some "retrieving system information error" that happens because i have no internet connection. when i try

yum install [file]

it comes up with some strange error.

so anyway, back to the story. i picked up the .run file from the NVIDIA website to install drivers because I have no idea how to USE an RPM
. i install. it works. and i try glxgears. it runs for a few seconds. then everything freezes up, there is no way out of the session (ctrl alt F1/2/3/4 don't work), and nothing happens. if i RESTART, the booting process gets to the nVidia splash screen and then freezes.
my hardware:

Fedora Core 6
Intel Celeron 2.89 ghz EM64T
512mb Ram
Asus P5V800-MX Mobo
80gb SATA Harddrive
NVidia NV17 Geforce 4400 MX
EDIT: the text in bold has been solved, and i have installed the driver from the rpm anyway. the same glx problem occurs, no one has looked at this post, i wonder why?

Solve : Newbie Linux?

I'm going to start playing around with linux once I get my cheap computer in, but my problem is, I have no EXPERIENCE with it.

Perhaps the admin's or someone kind enough could link or WRITE a "newbie manual" on installing and running a first time linux flavour for people who want to try it out and get some basic experience operating and experiencing it without destroying their computer in the process.

I understand all parts of the installation are learning aspects, but I would FEEL more comfortable if there was a Do's and Dont's guide that would give some tips on Linux prior to the initial use.Quote

Solve : Blacklisting protocols in CentOS 6?

Answer»

Hello,

I need to disable unused protocols from being usable on a server that is running CentOS 6. I did some reasearch and found how to BLACKLIST drivers in the modprobe.d blacklist file but can something similar be done for protocols?

Thank you

JohnEach PROTOCOL would have a service associated with it. KNOWING the service/protocol relationship you can disable the correct services for protocol usually. I havent worked with CENT OS in a while, but if you know how to enable/disable services and know the service name matching protocol, you should be ABLE to disable it in system services. Then confirm that its disabled.

Solve : Apache ??? Can you host 2 websites through same...?

Answer»

Hello ... I have a Celeron 700 Mhz Computer with 384MB Ram running Fedora Core 5 Linux, and set up as an Apache Web Server. The question I have is, can Apache serve two web sites at say 216.107.215.98:8080 and 216.107.215.98:8079, in which I have two registered domain names with DNS Forwarding through www.godaddy.com to 216.107.215.98:8080 and :8079 or can Apache only serve one port and website .... So I will have to have 2 computers running Apache one listening on port 8080 and the other on port 8079, with unique static IP's and port forwarding through my router?

Thanks for your assistance on this .... Its probably going to be where I will need to have 2 systems one listening on port 8080 and the other on 8079, but if I can serve two instances of Apache maybe, I'd rather have it all on the same server.

:-/Apache can indeed listen on multiple ports (and multiple IP addresses). Your NETWORK card can also have multiple IP addresses (within the same or different subnets).

For Apache, look up the "Listen" and "VirtualHost" directives in the manual, for more information.Thanks Rob ... I will look it up in their manual. Figured I would ask before looking. [smiley=thumbsup.gif]I host more than 2 websites with the following config at the end of my httpd.conf

Code: [Select]<VirtualHost nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn mmm.mmm.mmm.mmm>
ServerAlias www.domainname1.com domainname1.com
ServerName www.domainname1.com
DocumentRoot /WWW/directory1
</VirtualHost>

<VirtualHost nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn mmm.mmm.mmm.mmm>
ServerAlias www.domainname2.com domainname2.com www.domainname2.co.uk domainname2.co.uk
ServerName www.domainname2.com
DocumentRoot /WWW/directory2
</VirtualHost>
Note that domainname2 is setup so that you get exactly the same website regardless of whether you use a .com or .co.uk address (assuming you've registered both).Thanks banjo67xxx

Looked over your snippet and it looks like it would work if I was using 1 port for both sites such as the default 80 or 443. But since I am using DNS Forwarding to IP:port for my 2 websites at 8080 and 8079, would I also have to tell Apache to listen on 8080 and 8079, and if so on the line to tell Apache what port to listen on, would I put in SOMETHING like Listen on 8080:8079 to include both or would I have 2 separate lines,a nd if 2 separate lines hw does Apache differentiate between the two.

I will copy paste your snippet to my httpd.conf file and alter for my websites to see if this would fix it.

*** Maybe I should take the EASY way and run both sites through the same port, and point to 2 separate home pages like Index1.html and index2.html through my dns forwarding through my godaddy registered domain provider. BUT I think that Apache by defaukt is looking at Index.html as the home page.

I've not played around with listening on different ports. My broadband ISP only GAVE me one static IP, so my ADSL modem can only port forward everything for port 80 to a single port on my apache2 server (regardless of which domainname resolved to my static IP). I've left that as the default port 80 too.

I've listed multiple IPs in httpd.conf so that apache2 will work both from the internet and on my internal LAN (although its probably not necessary because of the NAT done by the ADSL modem when it port forwards). I then get DNS to work by running two sets of DNS servers, one set for my internal LAN which resolves my domainname to my internal LAN address of the apache2 server, and the other set which resolves my domainname to my static IP for the internet. I can only host one of the DNS servers for the external pair (and I get a friend to act as a secondary for me), by port forwarding port 53 to this host, and getting godaddy to register mine and my friend's static IPs as nameservers with ripe.

Hope this helps.It's still beyond me Dave, why you have to listen on anything other than the non-standard ports...

Solve : OS and Browser setup for older PC?

Answer»

I would like to set up my old laptop PC for my Mom to use for web-based email and basic browsing, and have it as bullet proof as POSSIBLE since she has little KNOWLEDGE about PCs. It's a circa 1998 Dell with Pentium 133 and I think 64M RAM.

I'd PREFER not to GIVE her the Windows 98 that's currently on it, so I'm wondering if the best setup would be old versions of Linux and Netscape/Firefox or something like that. I would appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks
RickOld versions probably will not have up to date security and software and 64 meg is really pushing it for a graphical front end.

You might look at VectorLinux.

If you are using dialup, modems can be a problem as well unless it is a real hardware MODEM (not a WinModem) or if you are on broadband.

Solve : Remotely shutdown Windows through Xubuntu?

Answer»

Does anyone know of an easy way to remotely shutdown a Windows XP machine from Xubuntu in a HOME LAN?I don't know of an equivalent to the SysInternals remote shutdown program, but you can always VNC or RDP into the XP machine. Check out UltraVNC and rdesktop, if you haven't already. VNC is probably the easiest to set up.Well you could use netcat if you PUT it on the windows machine. I THINK its standard for linux... it will give you a cmd prompt for the remote machine witch you can use to shutdown windows with "shutdown -s -f "

Solve : 32 & 64 bit Linux Distro on a single iso with install option for 32 or 64 bit??

Answer»

So I downloaded Linux MINT 15 both 32 and 64 bit ISOs and they are less than 1GB each. Going to place them onto thumb drives to test them out without burning DVD's.

Then it occurred to me that when ISOs were to be squeezed within a 700MB CD-R Disc limitation, it made sense to have 32-bit and 64-bit ISOs seperate.

But ever since CD sized ISOs became a thing of the past for many Linux Distros and both 32 and 64 bit ISOs are generally less than 2.2GB in size... why hasn't anyone combined the installer contents of both 32 and 64 bit ISOs and created single ISO with a pre-installation menu that simply gives you the choice of 32-bit or 64-bit install of the Distro of choice ( or ) 32-bit or 64-bit Live Distro environment selectable upon boot and if no choice is made in 10 seconds it defaults to 32-bit which works with almost all CPUs.

Looking online for info on this I found nothing in relation to making a single Linux ISO with 2 processor type options, but found info on how to join multiple ISOs into one : http://www.ehow.com/how_5118546_burn-multiple-iso-files.html However the menu option preinstallation, or preboot to the linux live environment to me would have to act LIKE GRUB etc.

Maybe they haven't put any effort into creating this this CPU combo ISO distro because lesser and lesser people are using optical drives and more and more are using flash USB sticks to install from.

To me it just doesnt seem as though doing this would be very difficult to have both versions contained within a single ISO file, although I dont think I'd be able to pull off merging the 2 ISOs myself and adding a bootloader with options into it prior to the 32 or 64 bit OS starting install or live environment. You almost need 3 OS on a single ISO, the 1st OS that gives you the grub like menu, and then that hands you off to 32 bit or 64 bit of which the hand off from this initial OS to the next OS might be tricky.

You can boot from a menu-selected ISO using Grub4dos, I use this to have several rescue packages on one pen drive (Windows 7 Rescue CD, Slax 6.1.2 live CD, Windows 7 PE). I use Slax if I need to SSH into my NAS (if the VHD that holds a Windows 7 image is locked by Samba, I can unlock it this way).

https://gna.org/projects/grub4dos/

For making a multiboot DVD or CD, there is a better tool (I have heard, I haven't used it yet) called SARDU

http://www.sarducd.it/index.html
Thanks Salmon for linking http://www.sarducd.it/index.html. If this works as advertised its the solution I have been looking for. Might even be able to consolidate my Disc binder of about 50 CD's with ISO's on them down to less than 10 DVD's. Played with Sardu last night, was able to get multiple ISO's to a single DVD with the SARDU menu. Setting this up was not very straight forward. If the interface was designed with a stepped wizard to build the DVD it would be way better. I ended up burning a DVD and booting my laptop off of this DVD which came up with the SARDU menu, from there I had to select Extras and then select the ISO to boot off this list, but it didnt work as intended, it dumps me out at grub without running the ISO for the distro of choice.

Went back and attempted a 2nd burn with a different configuration where I wanted the distros to be part of the first menu that comes preconfigured for some tools like memtest etc, but the software drop down menus had no options to ADD ISO's to the first menu, it only gave me options to add extra ISOs to the Extras menu option, but none of these ISOs located in that location of this DVD would run and boot and instead just dump me out to grub.

*Maybe I need to run a command from grub to launch the individual ISO, however my only experience with grub was for dual boot systems Linux/Windows and it has only been ALTERATIONS to the menu and when making a selection from the grub menu it always booted the desired result that was selected. But with SARDU it seems to not be executing the ISO to start, and just dropping me out at the grub prompt. Also I know that the data to the ISOs have been copied to this single DVD because if you look at the surface to see how much was burned most of the disc has been laser etched with the 4.1GB of data that I selected to add to the project and then burn. So its not as if the menu is there to accept input and the iso is missing to recieve the start instruction.

Going to look into https://gna.org/projects/grub4dos/ tonight when I get out of work.

Solve : whohelp!!!!?

Answer»

Who can tell me the way how I can enter the linux system without the password?THANK you!Login as root, and change it with
Code: [Select]passwd yourusername
If you mean the root password, then what's the policy of this forum about answering questions which could help someone to hack into a computer they dont own?We don't help with that, but as your are obviously new to Wangming, that would not be an issue anyway.

As a matter of fact, if you had not quoted the message in your reply, no one would have known that much.

I just deleted Proph's spam by the way.I forgot my password! I install double systems in my computer! for a long time ,I have not entry into the linux,so .....I had a quick look on google and WITHIN 0.19 seconds 9 of the first 10 links publicly reveal how to crack the root password, and your story sounds genuine enough. This technique cannot be used to hack into systems on the internet because you need physical access to the keyboard and CD drive anyway.

1a) Some versions of unix allow you to boot single user without needing the root password, so the first technique would be to add "single" or "1" to the linux boot options list for your unix partition.

When booted single user you might need to mount the root filesystem read/write, so find out what it is by LOOKING at /etc/fstab or /etc/vfstab, then

Code: [Select]mount -o remount,rw /dev/hd1a /replacing /dev/hd1a with whatever your boot device is

1b) If single user still needs a password, then boot from a rescue disk or knoppix

You'll need to identify the root filesystem, so take a look at the output from
Code: [Select]fdsik -l
Then mount the root filesystem
Code: [Select]mount -t reiserfs /dev/hda1 /mnt
2) Next you just edit out the password from the /etc/shadow file (or /mnt/etc/shadow if you mounted root on /mnt), or on some ditributions the password is in /etc/passwd.

Example before
root:x3FrTg6uYT7.:0:0:root:/:/bin/sh

and afterwards
root::0:0:root:/:/bin/sh

3) Finally after rebooting the system, if you still get PROMPTED for a password just hit ENTER.

NB: There can be further complications if you are using software mirroring.
E.g. for VERITAS Volume Manager mirroring on Solaris take a look at Sun Microsystem's SRDB 11828 (which I wrote when I worked there)That ought to get ol' Wangming fixed up nicely.

Take care, Wangster.

Solve : VGA-compatible text mode linux distro?

Answer»

hello everyone

I searching for a few days to find some Linux disto. with VGA compatible GUI and yet i can not find anything. all Linux Distro. use Gnome. KDE, OpenBOX, ... for GUI.
The VGA Compatible GUI is look like NC (Norton Commander) and NU (Norton Utilities) in old days. I attach NC.
did you have any suggestion?
I need this type of Linux Distro. for Learning and Education.

Thanks

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]Slackware is what I used originally with Linux and VGA 640x480 and used X Window with Gnome such as shown here:

http://hgriggs.org/xwindows.html

Did this on an old Pentium 166 with a 6.4GB HDD long long time ago. It was a very lengthy and manual process.thanks DaveLembke

Q1: do you have any photo of that old slackware?

Q2: where can i find old Slackware? main slackware website only have new version.
http://mirrors.slackware.com/

thanksWell you dont have to use slackware, but it is what i used a long time ago. There are other choices out there, however depending on system requirements you may find yourself having to run an obsolete distro.

As far as support for VGA, it is a rare occurance to have any issues with drivers for modern hardware and modern linux distro, however in the past I remember with Redhat 6.0 having to dig through a box of computer hardware I had pieces/parts and trying different video cards until i found one that was supported by the distro. Back then you would have video support through the install, and you made a selection on what video driver and resolution to use and then if it was a bad selection your display would EITHER go BLACK since it couldnt sync up or you would end up with strange display issues such as one driver that showed my screen doubled over itself with 2 mouse pointers etc.

I ended up finding a Trident VGA ISA slot type video card with 1MB Video RAM to use because there was no driver available for the integrated video card. Back then I was running an IBM 486DX4 100Mhz with 32MB RAM as my box to run Linux on and the biggest reason for this system not being used for anything else was because the bios was not Y2K compliant so I had it dated in the past during the roll over so that the system wouldnt show the year 2052 or something like that.

What is your hardware specs so I might be able to direct you to a match? CPU, RAM, Hard Drive Size, Video Card or GPU info and Video RAM amount etc.

As far as distros go, I myself found looking for older distros about a month ago that the mirrors are pretty empty of distros older than release dates within the last 6 years or so. But with ENOUGH digging you can usually find an old iso somewhere on a remote mirror if you want to run Linux on say a Pentium 200Mhz MMX and 64MB RAM etc, in which 99% of modern distros wouldnt run on that hardware and of which most of them are 1GB RAM recommended, 512MB MINIMUM, as wella s there are some made for lower end systems that required 384MB RAM that are still supported.thanks DaveLembke for great guide.

The PC specs are P3 800MHz, 64 MB RAM (may be upgraded to 128), 4 GB HDD

thanks
If you can stuff the maximum memory into that computer which is 512MB, you can run way more choices of distros.

I recently upgraded my DELL Pentium III 600Mhz laptop to 512MB of Ram ( 2 x 256MB sticks of PC133 sodimms in which PC133 RAM is backwards compatible to PC100. ) for just $15 buying memory on amazon.com, and I am running Linux MINT 14 KDE on it. This uses up about 5GB of my 12GB Hard Drive, and 512MB is bare minimum memory for this version to operate according to online data. http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=118953

4GB hard drive is really tight for a modern Linux install with a GUI .... most want 5GB or greater.

If you are stuck with the hardware being just a Pentium III 800Mhz 128MB RAM, and 4GB Hard Drive, if you want to have a GUI you will probably have to use an obsolete distro such as Linux MINT 6 which is happy but slow at 128MB RAM and can be squeezed into 2GB of the 4GB, or an older Live Distro such as Knoppix 4.

There is a modern distro called xubuntu based on ubuntu, but designed for older systems with lesser resources, and its minimum requirements are 256MB RAM. As can be found here: http://xubuntu.org/getxubuntu/

Knoppix claims to still support 128MB RAM and may be a good choice if you want to keep your 4GB hard drive free for saving personal data, and just run this operating system off of the CD or DVD Rom drive. Knoppix is one of many cool Live Linux Distros that is packed with useful software and can run by booting off the burned CD or DVD on this system. The only drawback to this LIVE Linux Distro is that it can be slow to boot to the desktop on 128MB RAM, and it runs way better on even 256MB RAM. Solve : How do you alter Knoppix Live-CD?

Answer»

Hello EVERYONE... I am sort of new to going head first into Linux. Took a course in it over the summer and know how to build up a system, add features ETC, but never altered a Live-CD yet to know how to do this.

My college professor said that I could alter Knoppix to add and alter the way it runs, but we never got into altering ONE.

I am guessing that I would have to have a Linux system up and running, which I have one running Fedora CORE 5, and decompress the contents of Knoppix Live-CD to a folder on the Linux system, make changes, then compress and burn the CD to create my altered Knoppix Live-CD.

What I mainly want to do is create a Web Server that runs from a Knoppix Live-CD with no HD present, and run Apache2 with my web page. Seen all over the google searches about people claiming to do this, but no information on how they do it.

Thanks,

DaveKnoppix and Fedora have some differences, so pick just one.

What you are describing is already available without you having to reinvent the wheel. Look into Slax Server Edition, DSL etc. on these pages:

This link here will be a great place to learn. http://www.tuxfiles.org/linuxhelp/filepermissions.html

I will break it down SOMEWHAT for you so you can get a better understanding but that article will help you.

R=Read
W=WRITE
X=execute

So lets say you you see a file that says Dir rwx-rwx-rwx

The first section where it says rwx is for the owner of the file. which means the owner can Read, Write, and execute the file.

The second section where it says rwx is for the users of the group of that file can Read, Write, and execute the file.

the 3rd section were it says rwx means the public can Read, Write, and execute the file. Which is dangerous

So lets says you got a file that says foo.txt rwx-w-r This means that only the owner can Read, Write, and execute the file, the users of that GROUPS can only Write to the file, and the world can only read the file.

I hope that makes sense. If you see rwx-rwx-rwx that is not a good thing setting them to rwx-rw-r will be a good permission. good luck.

Solve : Apache HTTP Server to run from CD ONLY?

Answer»

Hello... Since Apache is mainly a Linux Platform application, I figured I would post it here; however, I am testing the use of a Win32 Apache release 2.2.3 and was wondering if anyone who was familiar with the HTTPD configuration file might be able to shed light on this issue I am having.

I am trying to do probably something that Apache was never intended to do, and that is operate off of a CD in a solid state form. Anyways, I can point everything in the HTTPD file away from c:\program files\apache.... to X:\Program Files\Apache... ( The CD-Rom ) drive, but a single line in the HTTPD in relation to the server service start up point that has to be on a Hard Drive and not on a CD.

I am thinking that this may be due to a routine which requires a read/write buffer on the hard drive to operate. And if this is so, then it is impossible to do away with the hard drive for the Apache Web Server Service.

*** Another idea I came up with was to do away with Windows 2000 and take like my copy of a LiveCD like KNOPPIX and build and burn a special LiveCD with Apache Web Server and the pages to host on the specific port. Not sure if even this can be done or not, but if I need a Read/Write Buffer, Knoppix will definately create a Virtual Swap space in Memory to make it happen.

Any suggestions? Thanks! :-/

My partial HTTPD file for Win32 Apache 2.2.3 HTTP Server is below: The line that has to point to a HD is in Red below, and the CD Rom is MAPPED as X:\ in BLUE.

#
# This is the main Apache HTTP server configuration file. It contains the

#
# Configuration and logfile names: If the filenames you specify for many
# of the server's control files begin with "/" (or "drive:/" for Win32), the
# server will use that explicit path. If the filenames do *not* begin
# with "/", the value of ServerRoot is prepended -- so "logs/foo.log"
# with ServerRoot set to "X:/Program Files/Apache Software Foundation/Apache2.2" will be interpreted by the
# server as "X:/Program Files/Apache Software Foundation/Apache2.2/logs/foo.log".
#
# NOTE: Where filenames are specified, you must use forward slashes
# instead of backslashes (e.g., "X:/apache" instead of "X:\apache").
# If a drive letter is omitted, the drive on which Apache.exe is located

# to be loaded here.
#
What is the error you are getting?

I can't see any reason why you can't set your root to a CD, if everything is just static HTML (no hit counters or anything like that)

Not sure about using ServerRoot though, as I use DocumentRoot in my httpd.conf
Code: [Select]<VirtualHost nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn mmm.mmm.mmm.mmm>
ServerAlias www.domainname.com domainname.com
ServerName www.domainname.com
DocumentRoot /WWW/directory
</VirtualHost>Well here is what I did to better explain the problem.

1.) Installed Apache 2.2.3 Win32 application to Windows XP Pro system
2.) Edited the HTTPD.Conf file to change all instances of C: in the file to X:, which is my CD Rom.
3.) Created a seperate folder called Build and created a folder in it called "Program Files".
4.) Copied the entire Apache Tree to this C:\build\program files\ folder as preparation for the burn of the stand alone CD.
5.) Burned CD.
6.) Left CD in CD Rom X: and tried to start the Apache Service though the services interface. I would get the message "Starting" in the Apache interface window, and then 3 seconds later "Service Failed to Start."
7.) Went back to the original path of Apache in Program Files of C: drive and altered each X: back to C: until I located the line that was the problem of the service failing to start. After the service started, switch all prior C:'s back to X:'s since I located the one line that needs to load from C:
8.) Now here I stand with the service failing to start when pointed to X:\ but will start if pointed to C:\ and I was thinking that maybe the registry would have to be altered to know to point to X:\ but I shouldn't have to since the Httpd.conf file directs to wherever you need to launch it.
9.) I further tested my theory that it has to run from a HD vs CD Rom, by copying the entire apache tree to my D: drive a HD partition and altering the line for ServerRoot to D:/ as seen below, and the service started without any problems..... So I am starting to suspect that the service when loaded on whichever drive needs exclusive Read/Write Access to that drive, and the CD Rom, being Read-Only is causing it to fail..... SO if this is the fact then I might need to create a Ram Disk, virtual swap space for apache to run in memory, and I dont know how to do that.....? :-? :-? :-?

*** Now thinking of maybe seeing if I can bundle Apache with BartPE, since I cant find a way to alter my Knoppix 4.0.2 Live-CD to add my apache stuff. BartPE I know CREATES a virtual swap space in memory, so if this is the only problem, then... It should work I suppose... Any other suggestions you can think of?

Solve : how to configure eth0?

Answer»

Well I just installed College Linux 2.5 and could not set up a static IP during the install because it's stupid and kept messing up.... its is working right now but there is some commands that I have to enter into the shell everytime I boot..... It doesn't surprise me I used two completely different tutorials that barly cover configuring your eth. I'm amaized I could patch the two together............... On to what I did....

first I edited " /ect/networks " and added the highlited

#
networs This file describes a number of netname-to-address# mappings for the TCP/IP subsystem. It is mostly
# used at boot time, when no name servers are running.
#

loopback 127.0.0.0
localnet 127.0.0.0

[highlight]AUTO lo eth0
iface eth0 inet static
address 192.168.254.69
netmask 255.255.255.0
network 192.168.0.0
broadcast 192.168.0.255
gateway 192.168.254.2[/highlight]54

# End of networks.

Then I edited " /ect/resolv.conf " commented out the first line and added the second..

#search domain1.com
nameserver 192.168.254.254

All this reamains the same but the folowing command I have to re-enter to shell on reboot...

ifconfig eth0 192.168.254.69
route add default gw 192.168.254.254

I dont understand a bit of what I did how it works or why it doesn't remain working... I think it was total luck i managed to get it this far....

much thanx in advance..... Maybe I should have came here first
I don't know what College Linux is based on. Does the command "ifup eth0" work?command not found "ifup"

if I remember correct it is slackware based...College Linux was discontinued some time ago and 2.5 is an old product. (It has since resurfaced as a LiveCD server model.) That one was based on Slackware 9 (and version 11 is out now).

Get a newer distro and avoid the heartache.what is server model
Quote

what is server model

I haven't tried it, BUIT evidently is is preconfigured as a server that you can run directly from CD. I can't IMAGINE why anyone would do that, but....
Well I dont really know what a server does or why I would need one EITHER is it also an install for it because if I have live cds... I really do like this and I have installed ALMOST all leading distro's.... at least 15... if this is to be my problem i'll take it anyway is there some way I can make batch file to run these commands for me... maybe even at start up

ifconfig eth0 192.168.254.69
route add default gw 192.168.254.254

in that order...If you don't know what a server does, you definitely do not need it.

Solve : CD Live Ubuntu session - cannot watch streaming video?

Answer»

The first time I had a session CD Live Ubuntu on my system. My problem is that a lot of streaming VIDEOS on YouTube cannot be watched. I tried to install the required plug-in and can't even do that. Seems like there's no way to install this. Is there any way around to MAKE a video playable while being at the CD Live session? If you looking for a Live Distro that can play youtube streaming, MINT 14 works fine with Youtube as for it has Flash even if not installed, but booted off the DVD, since the ISO images are larger than CD's now.

I have a requirement where I need to capture the file names, check the date in the file names and proceed and load the data from all the FILES only if all the file names have the same date in them. Lets say, I have few files, X_US_20130420.CSV, X_CA_20130420.CSV,X_PH_20130420.CSV,X_NS_20130420.CSV. I need to check if all the files have the same date (20130420 here) and then use that date as a PARAMETER in my next job. Please help.

Thanks in advance,
DhruuvI know I'm necroposting here, but no one has answered and I think I can help you here:
Since it looks like you have the same format of file every time in that the extra stuff is always the same number of chars, what you're going to want to do is remove the beginning and end of the file, leaving you with only the numbers left. You could EITHER do this in Linux shell script, or you could use Java or something to take an argument and take care of it for you...which I may or may not have done because I was bored >< You can run it using "java Format " and that will print out the date for you, and you should be able to do that from within a Linux shell script.
Of course, you'll need to compile it first...here's the source code:
Code: [Select]public class Format
{

public static void main(STRING[] args)
{
if(args.length == 0) {
System.out.println("Usage: java Format <file>");
return;
}
System.out.println(args[0].substring(5,13));
}

}
You're going to want to take that code and copy it into Notepad or gedit or something and save it as Format.java. You'll then want to go to the commandline and run "javac Format.java", or it may just be "javac Format" without the ".java" part. You may need to install a JDK to use javac if you haven't already.

If you want to do it in Linux shell, you'll want to use head and tail and LOOK up the "-k" option for both, or just call "head --help" on the commandline. Good luck!

Solve : I need help choosing a distro!!!?

Answer»

I've explored 7 distros thoroughly (DSL, puppy, feather, kubuntu, Movix, LiMP, Geexbox) and none of them has what I need:

I have some very peculiar hardware:
Pentium III 800MHz
64MB of RAM (hence peculiar)
rage 128 pro gl
soundblaster 16
Belkin 802.11G (F5D7000)
So... I need one with good sound card support, minimal RAM requirements, and good NDISwrapper support, and if possible, something with 1) a good office suite (Ted and Ciag), 2) MPlayer and XMMS, 3) something better than dillo but smaller than firefox, and 4) XPaint or GIMP.

any help is appreciated
thanx www.vectorlinux.com

The wireless NIC will be the biggest hurdle with any distro.Puppy Linux worked fine with the ndiswrapper. Something with the same ndiswrapper as puppy. DSL and Feather do NOT support my card very well at all. Kubuntu is too new, Ubuntu, is just as bad and Xubuntu is still too new. Ubuntu-lite I think MAY be ok but will be slow. Are you SURE that VECTOR Linux will work? After it's a 400MB ISO i'm downloading; takes a while. Anyways thanx:)There's very little sure in this world other than Microsoft will screw you over.

Give it a try. I think you will be pleased. If not you may want to look at Slackware on which Vector is based. It's a distro that has more of a learning curve, but it will run on your equipment.

The problem with limited RAM machines is the window managers - KDE and Gnome.So Vector and Slackware use the X11 GUI?

Before I download Vector, can I install it to my secondary Hard Drive? So for some wacky reason if I ever had to use windows again... Does it ask for a path like Windows?Yes, it can go anywhere. Check the FAQ on the Vector site for any problems with this.Vector Linux will work with 64MB, but only in text-mode. Trying to load XFCE4 takes a long time and then it take 10 to 30minutes to load mousepad. The only viable way to use it is to boot in TUI and type in "startx mousepad". Anything that uses Xvesa or X.org?I think I'd spring for some cheap used RAM on eBay so you can be functional. I think i'm OK now. I'm using Puppy Linux for Web Surfing and Word Processing and i'm using GeeXboX for MULTIMEDIA. It runs OK with SPECIALIZED software. I haven't been on because of Internet problems. Here's a tip: never buy a Belkin product because of warranty; Their Tech Support suck.ironically, the system he is on uses SDRAM, which, i have a ton of... if i where you, i would get it up to atleast 192mbs of ram (a 128 stick addition), or, get it to 256mbs. will run quite smooth on 256mbs of ram.It's an old PC and will fail sooner or later. Better to invest in a new one.

Solve : Gnome?

Answer»

My install of Ubuntu uses Gnome, however I really want to try KDE.
Am I correct in assuming that these are just graphical front ends for Ubuntu linux, and shouldn't affect say, programs designed for Ubuntu specifically and ones already installed?
Will I encounter any serious PROBLEMS trying this?

Any advice would be GREAT, but please KEEP it to n00b terms Yep, no problems. You just need to install the KDE metapackage (look through Synaptic). I prefer KDE to Gnome - more easily customisable; but they are both resource hogs.After following these instructions:
http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/kde

and changing this file : /etc/X11/default-display-manager
to /usr/bin/kdm

The OPTION to use KDE does not appear on my login options menu, and the only VISIBLE change is that Konsole and Konqueror (which is what I really wanted) are installed. The file browser and everything else are exactly the same. Is this correct?

I take it you have rebooted? Thinkgs should look quite different after all of that. Did you encounter any errors during the process?

You may want to start from scratch using the Kubuntu distro.Thanks for the tip, I'll do that the next time I need to reinstall (I reinstalled last week)
At the login screen, I chose Gnome as default login option thingy, Now I dont have a login screen. No GUI is loaded and I have to login and type startx. Any way to go back?

Thanks.Trysudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

Solve : Web Site for Linux?

Is there is any web site for complete installation PROCEDURE for linuxGoogle has a lot of links.

You can also try www.distrowatch.com for links to all distros to download and the manufacturer's page.

www.linuxquestion.org has a GREAT forum system for either general questions or distro SPECIFIC issues.

There are some VARIATIONS, but most current distros are pretty straightforward. Some do REQUIRE you to know what hardware is in the machine.

Solve : will linux read .avi format movies??

Answer»

i was wondering if Ubuntu linux has a program that will play .avi (divx) format movies. also, can i use the composite out on my video card on linux so i can watch movies on my TV? the video card is a Saphire radeon 9200. this is what it looks like:

the system i am planning on running Ubuntu on is a pentium four 1.5ghz based shuttle SS51G, with 512mbs of DDR266 memory, ati radeon 9200 128mb 128 bit video card, 320 gig western digital 3200JB hard drive, Lite-On DVD burner (unsure of the specs), and i will soon add a tv TUNER card to it. the system has ONE AGP 4X and one PCI 32 bit slot. also, does linux support 5.1 surround sound integrated audio? i think the onboard audio uses the realtek chipset... the reason i want to know this is so i can convert this LIL computer from a dust collecting paper weight, to a multimedia center PC.

EDIT: this is the shuttle XPC SS51G i am going to use (ive swapped the cd burner for a dvd burner since this pic was taken):

Yes, and yes (with the right cables).

There are lots of DIFFERENT video players for Linux. LOTS (see Google). Many will come with your DISTRO (especially if you've added the Universe package repository).

You may want to check out VLC Media Player - that's available for Windows, Linux and some other platforms.

Solve : Possible to have firewall while being at the CD/DVD Live session??

Answer»

Is it possible to install and have it while being at the CD/DVD session? I mean Live Distro Mint 14. I'd like to log in to my bank account and stuff like that. I think better to have a firewall then. I don't really like to install Linux on my system that's why this question.

BTW: Dave, Mint 14 as Live session works really good I can watch my STREAMING video etc. and I'm really glad of it Thanks for your advice. You, my friend, need to install Linux on a USB stick. You could even set it up so you can save your data after you shutdown Maybe the router has a firewall could use.

Maybe you mean to have a Linux ISO image on my USB stick? I don't get it how could I install OS to USB stick?
Yes, that's what I have - Linux Mint 14 ISO image on my USB stick. To make that ISO workable from USB stick I USED Unetbootin program.

No, my router doesn't have one.

Yep, Unetbootin, that's what I used and it's not an ISO image, it's just a bootable version of Linux that runs off a flash drive. The computer treats the USB stick is a hard drive, and just boots from the OS on it.Yes, you're RIGHT. Once an ISO file went thru Unetbootin it couldn't be any LONGER ISO. My bad
I've found something http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=90&t=134980
Seems like the firewall in there - while at the Live session. To make sure I went to Menu-Software Manager and in the search field I typed: firewall. Had a list of firewalls then, and on that list ufw had been marked as an installed firewall

I have already tried to save a couple of downloads. Doesn't work for me. Once I end the session and the day after I start a new one there is NOTHING else left on my flash drive except of OS files and folders. Not mentioning about a couple simple settings on my Linux desktop - they have gone too. So, my question: how could I set up the things on my bootable flash drive to be able to save my data? Also to be able to save some of my desktop settings, if this possible. Never mind. I have found this out. Have to mark option "persistence" in the program before you let an ISO go thru it. So I made one with "persistence" and it even works (saves files, settings, bookmarks etc.)
There you go!

Solve : Dual boot 98 AFTER ubuntu install?

Answer»

I have just managed to get ubuntu the way I like it and downloaded all the apps, codecs and whatnot I need to run it at its BEST. However, I just got a COPY of Black and White, which is the perfect reason to install Windows 98 for a dual boot system.

Could someone please tell me how I can make a partition for windows, install it and dual boot without reinstalling ubuntu?

Thanks.The best solution, unfortunately, is to ALWAYS install Windows first. Windows doesn't play well with other operating systems. (Gee, I wonder why? )

This can be done but I don't recommend trying. It is unfortunate that Ubuntu is already tuned to your LIKING, but luckily an install can be done quickly, and less painfully, than Windows.

If you want to try, though....

http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Dapper#How_to_restore_GRUB_menu_after_Windows_installationI wonder if it's possible to use GParted to resize the Linux partition to the far end of the hard drive, and insert Windows into a new first partition? You'd have to then reinstall Grub/Lilo after installing Windows...

Just thinking out loud. I've never tried it.two weeks ago I had windows 98 on a seperate drive, unfortunately it finally gave up the ghost. I would swap drives ROUND on the rare occasion I need 98, as even when jumpered correctly the drive would not play nicely as a master ALONG with another slave drive.

Thanks for your advice, but it seems a bit over my head. I'll keep my eyes open for a HDD on the cheap.

Thanks.

Solve : "apt-get update" succeeded in ubuntu 9.04 but failed at 13.04?

Answer»

I ran "sudo apt-get update" in both ubuntu 9.04 & 13.04. It succeeded at 9.04 but failed at 13.04. The /etc/apt/sources.list are the same at both version. How come they had different result? In my opinion, sources.list contains all servers to be checked. If the sources.list is the same, the result should be the same. The version of Linux or Ubuntu shouldn't matter. Attached is the failure screenshot of version 13.04. Am I right? Could anyone tell me why? Thanks.

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by ADMIN]It appears that it is not GETTING out to the site to get the updates and that is why you are getting 404 errors. I see that you are running this in a VIRTUAL box. Does this virtual box have its virtual NIC BOUND to a physical NIC to go out to the web? Is this virtual box of Linux able to SURF the web? If its able to surf the web and yet not able to get the updates and states 404 errors that would be an interesting one.I confirmed the Linux can surf web very well. So, how come is the interest one? Thanks.

Solve : Input Not Supported - help please!?

Answer»

Hello,
I'm new to Xubuntu and WHENEVER I turn on the computer, it does all the basic things at start up and then the background is black with a box that says: "Attention: Input Not SUPPORTED". I was able to use the computer and get online earlier but, now I have no idea what I could have done to make this happen. I've tried turning off/on several times.
Any ideas?Never SEEN this before with xubuntu... but have you added any new hardware like different keyboard or mouse, or anything connected to USB port that may be falsely detected as an input device?

If you dont have anything important saved on the hard drive you can always reinstall xubuntu and see if this corrects it if no hardware was changed.Quote from: DaveLembke on July 13, 2013, 07:35:51 PM

I just got this desktop computer yesterday and installed the wireless card today. It worked fine right after that and then this happened. I didn't add anything else or change anything. I don't think I can re-install Xubuntu because I can't access the internet or anything at all.Xubuntu can be downloaded with another computer and the ISO burned to CD/DVD or a usb thumb/pen drive can be made bootable with it. You then boot off the media and go through the install process. How did you install Xubuntu without Disc or USB thumb drive? I have seen Network INSTALLS of Linux but they are more involved than via Disc or USB stick.

The only other thought I have is that maybe an update broke something. The test for this will be reinstalling Xubuntu clean, verifying the computer is working fine and then perform updates and see if it BREAKS again with the error. Thank you! I will give it a try.

Solve : Most Popular Linux for 2014?

Answer»

[Source for this is By
Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols for Linux and Open Source
June 24, 2013]

You will never guess. This is about 'most popular' LIKE what is the most popular breakfast among adults. No fair asking children. Just aduts.

Thee are millions of people that use the most popular Linux every day. The don't call themselves Linux users, but they are. They are not innovators, movers or shakers. They are just real people doing what they do with Linux machines.

This article APPEARED earlier this year and then author predicts taht by 2014 there wail be no contest. Hey, the author knows his stuff. Don't judge it before you read it.

Quote

OK, so what do you think is the second most popular Linux? This one is trickier. There are no useful DESKTOP Linux surveys.
He goes on to say maybe:
Quote
...my pick for the second most possible Linux desktop is...
Google's Chrome OS.
Wait, you CRY, who is this guy? And what does he thing #1 is?
Can you guess? Hey, nobody said Desktop PC. You must recognize that Desktop PCs are no longer mainstream. Anything portable is now the majority. So the most popular Linux has to be on any thing you can take with you.
To learn the shocking truth about the future of Linux, your must read...
Most Popular Linux You Will Never Guess.
Wow! It's a whole 5 weeks since you started a "The most popular Linux is Android" thread, with a link to the very same article! Will you be doing another around the end of November?
I've never thought of Android as a Linux distribution for a few reasons. The first being that it doesn't use the Linux kernel- but rather a modified Linux kernel. One could almost argue, on the same basis, that OSX is BSD since it uses a heavily modified BSD kernel.

As far as I'm aware, no Linux distribution uses a modified Linux Kernel; they all use a version straight from the kernel mainline. So this in and of itself would set it apart from every single Linux distribution.

In any case, if somebody puts Chrome and Android at the top of such a list, they have to be biased.

I have 2 NICs. One is specificed ZONE="internal" and the other "external" in the ifcfg-* files, I have set IPV4.forwarding = 1 in /etc/sysctl.conf, and run firewall-cmd --zone=external --add-masquerade

However, when I attempt to route from any machine on the internal network I'm getting Destination Host Prohibited and of course if I disable firewalld the error goes away but then I lose masquerading.

In iptables there was a ruleset called FORWARD, but in firewalld I can only FIND --add-port-forward which isn't the same thing.

How do I allow routing in firewalld ?

TIA.
Finally, I found the answer ...

Code: [Select]# cat /etc/firewalld/direct.xml
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<direct>
[ <RULE ipv="ipv4" table="filter" chain="FORWARD_direct" priority="0"> -i ETH0 -o eth1 -j ACCEPT </rule> ]
</direct>
This feature appeared in firewalld-0.3.4-1.fc19 but there is no firewall-cmd support yet, and the man page was omitted, but it WORKS

Solve : IPtables accept from X IP's Drop of anything else.?

Answer»

I'm running into some issues with iptables. I cannot see why.

basically I'm using iptables -A INPUT -s X.X.X.X -j ACCEPT to only accept PACKETS from X ip. ( about 20 entries )
When I have put in the IP's I need. I put
iptables -A INPUT -j DROP
iptables -A OUTPUT -j DROP

But
iptables -A OUTPUT -j DROP Kills my SSH connection and then I can no longer connect. I have to flush iptables via rescue mode.

What Am I doing WRONG?Found what I was doing wrong.
iptables -A OUTPUT -j DROP would break my connection because I didn't ADD a rule to iptables to accept outbound traffic from my ip
I don't know.
Can you be specific as to what Unix or Linux you have? And what tools are you using. Is this on a LAN or are you WORKING with IPs from the Internet. If Internet, in what region are you located?

Does this relate to lyu work?

Solve : How come the read command can't receive the input??

Answer»

I wrote a burn-in program at Ubuntu which will be called automatically at START of system, as below. I expect it can trigger a re-start cycle but users can break that cycle at each iteration before the loop count is run out. It will prompt user to reboot or not by 'read' command. I inserted a few lines to call this burn-in program at end of /etc/rc.local, as below:
++++++++++++++++++++++++++
echo To test burn-in
echo To run burn-in
[ -e /home/lot/burn-in ] && bash /home/lot/burn-in
-----------------------------------------------
My trouble now is that the 'read' command can't receive my input KEY of 'n' or 'N'. Instead, the input seems gotten by bash and it interpreted it as a command. Below is the message appeared in console at system start.
+++++++++++++++++++++++
To test burn-in
To run burn-in
reboot or not? n
n: command not found
[emailprotected]:~# ttt =
------------------------------------------
If I invoked this program manually instead of being called at /etc/rc.local, the 'read' ran as well. So, my question is: how come 'read' can't GET the input in case of being called /etc/rc.local?
