I have real player 10 on windows xp. I also have a heap of video clips that will only play on real player 8. I am constantly installing and uninstalling the two versions depending on what I want to watch. The automatic real updates do not work. No no no. There are two different file access methods for Word TEMPLATE documents. The default action (selected by double-clicking on the file in Explorer) is "New". It creates a completely new file BASED on the template, and is not the same as opening the template. The other action is "Open" which you can access if you right-click on the template in Explorer and choose "Open".

This has been the case since early versions of Word for Windows.Well, zylstra555, I believe I understand your thinking here. You're saying why would Word let you modify a template because you then lose the original template. Right? But, in fact, my tests with both Word 2003 and Word 97 worked the same. I could open a never before opened template, make a change to it, and Word allowed me to save it without any alert or PROMPT asking me to confirm that I want to overwrite the existing file.

So, if preservation of the original template deemed desireable, then the user should open one of the original MS templates and save it under a different name. Since I really haven't used templates much, I'm thinking the other logical approach is to simply open a template and save it as a REGULAR Word document. Is there any particular reason to RETAIN the template file format? I think not, unless converting it to .doc results in loss of some features in the template; indeed, this MAY be the reason to retain the template format.

However, Word 97 would not let me change a template to a document; Word 2003 will allow this via Save As.

Do you have a Restore Point prior to the date the problem started? You might try going back to that Restore Point.MySpace has just upgraded everything to the very latest version of Flash. Are you sure you're using the correct version?Is this only happening on that dreaded MySpace website?

If U say all Telnet is not secured pl suggest me to use which service for remote admin.In ANSWER to your last QUESTION, telnet is inherently insecure, MAINLY because the telnet protocol sends/receives packages in plain text, including logon passwords. You need:

• At the server end, OpenSSH for Windows

If its not and it doesnt show up in the list of installed programs in Control Panel ...ADD/REMOVE programs....I would do this....SHUT down and reboot in "Safe Mode" ......then GO into "my computer " C drive /programs folder ......it should be there ......assuming it is ...high-light the folder and select delete ......if it wont let you do that...open the folder and delete the items one at a time until they are all gone . Then reboot back into normal mode . Then I would go to the registry and do a search for that program name and remove it .
If you have a good registry cleaner use it instead of manually removing .
Be sure to make a backup of your registry just in case .

Best to use a program such as Advanced Uninstaller Pro 2004 and drag the shortcut of the game (or .exe) onto the shortcut of Advanced Uninstaller Pro 2004.Often you can find a file called "UNWISE.EXE" in the directory you installed the game/application. This is just the uninstaller - it doesn't suck you into a black hole or anything!:)thanks all of you for your expert suggestion. It really solved my most of the problem.

I have this HHD western digital of 20 Gb. that had Windows Me. i decide to format the disk and i used a crack copy of Windows XP Pro that i have. I delete the existing partions, created ONE new partition ntfs, and when the set up star to install windows. right about 70 % of the installation stop telling me that the copy of windows was not original and that couple of files were not original from windows.I try format again didn't work. i try ANOTHER copy of windows crack didn't work. please help.

It is a long story....It was late and I accidentily CHANGED the administrator acount into a LIMITED acount!!! That was the only ACCOUNT I had set up. Now I cannot log in as an administrator at all. I have FrontPage2003. I have done trial and error four hours now and cannot FIND the fix. But I am sure it is easy.

I insert a pic but cannot enable text next to the pic. For example, the pic is INSERTED and is left justified, but there is all this blank space to the right where I would like to write some text. I try writing text but it just starts a new paragraph below the pic.

Make sure that the last attribute (align="left") is present in the tag - doesn't matter where so long as it's within the < and >.

If you do have it and it's still not working, check to see if the following is at the top of the document:

dl65 Right click on the Picture. Select Picture PROPERTIES. Click either non, left or rightIt looks like that works. I still had to move things around a bit. I could only LEFT it to make it work.

We our a SMALL business and use Outlook 2000 to send emails to our customers. The emails are MADE up on Elite software and then get sent out through Outlook but we do not have an outbox to look at to see which customers have received the EMAIL. Is there anyway to see our mailing list before we send out a email.
In Outlook: Click on the "file" menu and select "work offline". You will then be able to view the files in the Outlook outbox before they are sent.

When you are happy with it. Click work offline again. THis will remove the tick (check mark). Click send and receive.

note if you open one of the emails in your outbox, you will have to click send on that PARTICULAR email

I'm sending emails (Word format) from MS Outlook...and after any are sent, the system freezes and I can't close the window or create any forward or backward movement at all. In fact... have to reboot to get back to my Outlook Files and then same thing after next email. The emails do arrive according to recipients. Also, Outlook won't come up when clicking my desktop icon or from any other source until after reboot. Have not looked too deeply at other programs within MS Office 2000 to see if they work yet. Any help is greatly appreciated!

..His Norton anti-virus is of course new...should he go to Norton for an update so soon after receiving a new system?
His friend loaded MS Office 2000 and created the ability for Outlook to import 2 email accounts...worked fine for about 2 days, but I didn't know updates were necessary for MS Office. Is said update available through normal windows update site?

I upgraded to Windows XP and did not remove NAV 2005 beforehand. I have tried to uninstall and re-install, however while installing I get an error message "this MSI must be launched through setup". I click OK, it then starts to install and after a few minutes, I get another error message " Error 1606. Could not access network location "::\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop". Hitting either retry or cancel ultimatley ends up with a failed installation. Any ideas? richie_rich66.....I would have a look at this .....

I have now gotten past this problem with NAV 2005 only to encounter another. When Norton installs, the bar graph indicating how far along the installation is, gets about 2/3 of the way finished and the installation complete window pops up. By clicking 'finish" it then reboots the computer. After running LiveUpdate, I get the error "LU1812 an update failed to install". On the list of programs there is the red X nest to the Symantec Redirector. I followed Symantec's solution all the way through to uninstall and reinstall with no luck including following their recommendations for installing after a failed installation, removing Norton after add/remove does not work, ETC. If Outlook is installed (and is the only email client installed) it will almost certainly be the system wide default mailing (MAPI) application. Firefox uses the system default, so your grandma's reasoning is flawed.

Several months ago I installed a piece of software called " Deep Freeze 2000 XP ". Soon after installing it, however, I realized that the programme was unsuitable for my purposes and decided to uninstall it. This is where the problem starts: the CD that I had initially used to install the software did not have an uninstall procedure so I searched the Internet
for a solution.The following uninstall procedure was what I eventually ended up using:

1. Disable DeepFreeze with the password using Shift + Double Click on the tray icon or CTRL + ALT + SHIFT + F6

2. Reboot

3. Goto the control panel -> Add/Remove Programs -> Uninstall DeepFreeze

3x. You may want to reboot again, up to you.

4. After you return to desktop, open the RUN command prompt in the start menu

5. type in msconfig

6. Click the Services tab and uncheck the service named DFServ by Hyper Technologies

7. Click Apply/OK

8. LOOK in C:/Program Files/Hyper Technologies, look for any EXE files in there and remember their names

9. Press CTRL + ALT + DELETE and shut down the system processes that you should have REMEMBERED from step 7, there are most likely 2.

10. Go back to C:/Program Files and delete the Hyper Technologies folder

Final Step: Reboot.

If successful, the DeepFreeze icon in the system tray should be gone, and the startup TIME should be improved.


The above procedure did the job of removing the programme but at the expense of significantly slowing down my computer at Start-Up. Pre -“Deep Freeze” installation Start-Up time was simply a matter of seconds whereas the current Start-Up time takes over 90 seconds!

I’ve carried out all of the following actions in the hope of restoring my system’s original Start-Up time but to no effect:

• Disk Cleanup
• Disk Defragmenter
• Full Virus Scan

My computer uses Windows XP Professional ( Version 2002 ).


Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Yes, appears as though there is only one hard drive on Primary IDE Channel but no DVD drive.

Downloaded and ran Advanced Registry Optimizer – no change!

After carrying out above, is there any point in asking what you mean by “CDR on two secondary IDE channels ? ” Couldn’t find this!

i want to back up my installer cds for some of my games (the disc you need in the drive to play the game). i have a cd BURNER and a dvd/cd burner. i would like to go from ONE to the other, without having to copy files onto my comp. is there a way to do this?This is just what you need. I've just started using Firefox for a browser and when I CLICK a link it will change colours while clicked but on returning to the page, the link is BACK to it's original BLUE. If there's many links on the page it's confusing to remember which ones I've visited.

I've got the settings at default and have tried forcing the app to use my font/colour choice but that didn't work either.

On further study, it looks like it works fine at the OFFICE while the above happens at home. As FAR as I know, both were just DL and install.I never gave that any attention. (My memory is still in working order, however, it could be related to your age.. 50, was it?)

I have an old DOS software program that I USE (14 years old) and I need the user name changed.

I no longer have the registration code to change it - I have TRIED to CONTACT the author of the software program, but have had no LUCK. I'm not sure if he is alive any more.

The program is a teacher's gradebook program that I truely enjoy using. I came across this program as a shareware version RECENTLY, and cannot get the name changed.

Is there anyone who can help me or at least point me in the direction of getting some help to get the user name changed?

im getting a new computer ...i have no idea how to move/TRANSFER Microsoft Office files...like the microsoft word/power point. There are other office type programs that are compatable &AMP; free (I think).
Check back later and see if someone suggests ONE. Open Office is free and can be downloaded. Outside of extreme formatting and macros it is Office compatible.

I am one of those people that just received a terrible shock while
trying to restore a complete hard drive using MS Backup. I am using a Gateway computer that has a restore disk. This disk will
WIPE out all disk partitioning from Partition Magic and will GENERALLY lock up or deny access to the hard drive while trying to
restore or copy over files using MS Backup from an External Hard Drive because these partitions were created after the fact. Ok, fool me once!

Is there a program that will 100 % copy: Partitions, system settings, mail listings, printers, in short everything that’s on the said drive and do all of this in spite of a Gateway restore disk, considering that we will now LEAVE the hard drive un-partitioned and in tact? I would be using an 80Gig External Hard Drive to accomplish this task.

Highly recommended: Acronis True ImageYes, Norton ghost would allow you to completed image your Disk to a new Disk.

or you could set up a Raid Mirror, that would keep two disk Synced at all time's (The problem here is they are still in the same computer and could both fail dude to Lightning Heat Fire or stupid)

There are many Imaging programs available , Boot IT NG will let you copy a HDD to a New one.

Can you imagine? A program that actually does what it says it can do!

Restored Hard Disk and ALL applications including printers and custom settings.
Time from Gateway Disk reloads to reloading Acronis, after a Restore disk re-load was 35 minutes. Its also important to note that all of this was accomplished with the free 15 day trial version.

Although the Hard Drive was restored in it’s 200 Gig entirely, this program gives every indication that it will also restore any Partitions that were created and included in your backup copy, I believe them. Buying this one for sure.

I saved some WEB pages from filmsite.org on my hard drive, now the web page contains INFORMATION about movies with a thumbnail attached to its content. The problem I am having is when I open the page on my hard drive, it opens up fine but when I write the pages on CD and then when I access the CD, the thumbnails DONT appear, all I get to see is the DREADED red 'X'.
My OS is win XP.When you Save a Web page to your Computer , some TIMES it Save's all the Pics, and Other Attachments to a Folder with the same name

If you are just putting The .Html file on the CD it wont work, you need to put the Html File and the Folder onto the CD, and any other Files that are ConnectedWell I did put all the files connected to the page, but still it wont work.

I recently acquired an IBM ThinkPad 760E (for free) and I was wondering, I'm going to repartition and reinstall Windows (it has Win 98 First edition and I'm going to install SE). The software and drivers aren't an issue because IBM has all that crap on their website. But I was wondering, is it safe to convert the hard drive to FAT32 (it's FAT16 right now), or will I lose some of the BIOS supported features like hibernate, etc.? The BIOS date is 1999 (it appears it's been updated). Thanks!

Thanks.FAT32 will work just fine on there. Reformat the whole drive and then reload Windows, rather than trying to convert it once WIndows is loaded for best RESULTS. What size is the harddrive? I think "FAT" is better on really small harddrives (2-gb). If you are formatting afresh, as it sounds you are, you do not need to convert from one to the other, you can just directly format to FAT32.Many of those came with a 3.1 gig. or bigger drive.It's 2.1GB (shows up in Windows as 1.98GB) and, yes, I'm repartitioning because the current Windows installation is a mess (you know how used computers are), and it's Windows 98 first edition.

I was kind of thinking (mostly as a joke) to put Windows XP on it ! I'd have to bring the RAM up past 32MB (!) first but I still can't see it running on a 150MHz Pentium! Not to mention the tiny hard drive. I have run it on a 200MHz pentium before (2.5GB hard drive)...

seriously though, for an old computer, the battery holds a suprisingly good CHARGE. The people I got it from only used the computer for like 5 months though, so it's barely used. And I was suprised about the XGA screen too... I was expecting 800x600. For a free computer I really can't complain.

Back to the hard drive, it doesn't look like it's upgradeable. At least not without some modification. Is upgrading it possible? Thanks!

I hope that someone can help. We are trying to use Outlook email signatures in our office and are experiencing problems with the font changing. The signature is set up to be Arial 10. The message font is set up to be Arial 10. Yet the first and last lines of the signature change to Times New Roman 12 when USED. I have TRIED this on different machines and it HAPPENS on all of them, although on a couple the font size is different but always Times New Roman. I believe there must be an additional formatting option where it is set to Times New Roman but I cannot find this despite looking for what SEEMS like hours. We are set to use Microsoft Office Word 2003 to edit e-mail messages

AmandaIs Times New Roman the default font for the body of your email? How many lines are in your signature? Please state the exact sequence of steps you use to create or edit a signature. I have no problem controlling font in a signature, using Word as the email editor.
No the default font in under mail format in Outlook is Arial 10. To create the signature we go into Signatures, New, Advanced Edit and then create the signature in Word. We TYPE the text choose the font, size and colour and insert our company logo as a small image. The fonts pretty much always remain as Arial when we create a new email but the first and last lines nearly always change. Sometimes it may change size but will regularly change font to Times New Roman. On occasion it will not change but this tends to be when we respond to certain emails.Well, I have no idea where you're getting that Signatures, New, Advanced Edit sequence. It doesn't exist in Outlook or Word. Where are you getting that?The answer lies with email stationery/templates. Look in the online help. There are some HTML files that you can tweak to change the default typefaces.

I run a MUSIC website. Recently, the wbesite held a small gathering which was all filmed. I'm going to put a few of the clips online, but first I want to make sure that I have the best size, format, and file type for my visitors.

What's the best file type for small, three minute videos that'll be downloaded by impatient music fans? What dimensions should I use? Codecs? Any programs in particular?

Also, I have no idea about codecs and such, so any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

You might try Windows Movie MAKER; it comes with Windows XP. Did any software come with your video camera that can edit videos? As far as best file type and Codecs, I have no idea. I have a great video editor, actually, but there are so many options when I go to create a file that I haven't been able to figure which formats, codecs, and resolutions result in lower sizes.

Thanks for trying to help, though.Different file formats will have differing results depending on what's in the video. So it's hard to be categorical. MPEG-based codecs are a good place to start. Why not try MPG, AVI, or something DIVX based? Compare file sizes AFTERWARDS.

When trying to open an Excel file on a floppy DISC, an error message reads: "file" cannot be accessed. The file may be read-only or you may be trying to access a read-only location. Or the server the document is stored on may not be responding. "

However, no problem opening other Excel files on the same floppy. Please help. Right click and see if the options that are tagged (Read only, etc) are different from the others.

Did open properties & the box for "Read Only" isn't checked. There is one big difference: In the properties window, on top, there should be three tabs: General, Custom & Summary. If its a DVD your using ..... ( 4.7GB ) try using NeroVision Express to encode and burn ........ ( Nero will tell you that the content is too large to fit and then offer to reduce the quality so it will fit ) or , you could do as "yesterday" has suggested and use Easy Video Splitter or use AVI/Divx to DVD , SVCD or VCD converter and simply set the app to split the complete unclipped version into 2 parts . Nero also has the ability to allow you to clip the original movie file .

I currently have Ubuntu INSTALLED on my COMPUTER but WANT to revert to Windows XP (won't run both because my hard drive is only 20GB, so that doesn't leave me with much partitioning room). I tried getting into BIOS at computer boot up so I could choose the boot from CD option but the computer is not letting me. The disk won't boot up on its own and I can't get it to boot from Ubuntu or don't KNOW how. How can I get XP back on my computer?Ubuntu doesn't have anything to do with BIOS access. Help! I run W2k. I have installed the software to upload photos form my Fuji digital camera (A310). The Finepix viewer is start-upable, I know the USB port works (the computer knows when I am plugging the camera in, or takign it out), the camera is on USB settign when plugged intot he USB port...but...

the camera is supposed to start the Finepix uploading program when it's plugged in, and it doesn't, and I can't get the Finepix viewer to "see" the camera. The Fuji online help suggests checkign the "launch exif" files box in the start-&GT;programs->startup mendu, but there is no such thing in this location.

My camera did, so I'm now wondering if your did..... Also, when you try to view the pictures, and it asks you to select a program froma list for the PICS. to open with, have you tried clicking on search for the right program on the internet? I have the right software (got it from Fuji). I can open the program (ie the program works).

What is suppsoed to happen is, when I plug the camera in to the USB port, the computer is suppsoed to start the Finepix viewer (this is the program thatuplaods the pics onto my computer and ltet sme looka t/edit them-- its designed for the camera).

Online help says I am suppsoed to find an "exif launcher" box somewhere in w2k and check "launch" for this program, so that when I plug the camera into the USB port, it starts the finepix viewer.

My digital camera is viewed upon as external storage space and I can easily access my photos. I am running Win 98 and my freecell is giving me an error message, "Freecell has caused a general protection fault in module Cards.dll". I have an option to close or ignore. If I ignore, the card count is like 300 or so and there are DUPLICATES of the same card. I have tried to remove games in "Add & remove" also to reboot before reinstalling. I've also EXTRACTED the cards.dll file in SFC. Any reasonable advice would be greatly appreciated. By the way, reinstalling Windows doesn't help.Overwriting Windows is NEVER a good idea.

I have another friend who needs some help with her system. Unfortunately, she is 4 hours away, and does not remember all details of the events, so the information that I am able to provide may be both sparse and speculative.

She bought a Gateway last October. I THINK it had McAfee Internet Security installed as a 30 trial (does Gateway do this too?).

She had the Geek Squad come to her home and set up the new machine for her. It seems that they installed Norton Internet Security for her at this time (she says that it expires in Sept). I am assuming that they removed McAfee Antivirus before they installed Norton.

This June, she was getting the BSOD, so she called Gateway, but she says they were of little help to her, so she had the Geek Squad come and help her again. They "restored" her system for her. I do not know whether they did a System Restore or a complete Factory Restore. She says that everything was still there except her emails and addresses.

She keeps getting warnings from McAfee that the trail has ended. After asking her some QUESTIONS, I am under the impression that only the Security Center and AntiSpyware portion of McAfee is still installed. I had her go into Add/Remove and look for any McAfee entries. She says that Security Center and AntiSpyware are all that are listed.

I then asked her to look in Task Manager for any McAfee processes. I knew that mcshield.exe, mcvsescn.exe, and mcvsrte.exe were related to the Antivirus portion. I then asked her to report to me any processes that started with "mc". She said that: mcagent.exe, mcupdmgr.exe, McTskshd.exe, Mcdetect.exe, and mcupdui.exe where still running.

After researching these processes, it appears to me that they are all related to Security Center (updating, UI, etc).

I have suggested to her that she just uninstall any McAfee entries through Add/Remove unless she intends to renew her McAfee subscription. (which she does not)

Here are my concerns:

1. I know how finicky AV programs can be, esp Norton and McAfee. Is there any reason to think that something may go afoul while she in uninstalling McAfee? I really wish that the Geek Squad PERSON would have removed ALL McAfee products before installing Norton. Doesn't that make more sense?

2. I also know that having multiple AV programs installed can cause major conflicts. Does this ring true when ANY portion of multiple security suites are simultaneously installed? (Security Centers, for example) It seems to me that each company wants to be "the one" on your machine, but as long as there is only ONE AV program, is everything OK?

3. Are there any other processes that she should look out for that may cause conflicts?

4. This is a bit off topic, but she also uses Incredimail, which I am very unfamiliar with. Do AV programs (in this case Norton) protect you from email viruses when using Incredimail?

From what Ive Heard McAffee GET off your System when you tell it to, so this should not be a Problem.
Norton on the other hand is a *censored*

Yes More than one Anti VIRUS is a Nightmare, Security Centres are Usually management Programs for your anti-virus/Mal-ware and Firewall, The Centres them Selves should not cause problems, but the Firewalls could be Counter Productive, i would make sure she only has one Firewall enabled

MANY, many process can be bad, but to post a list would be insane, you could run hijack this on here computer , and post a log up here , but being she's 4 hour's away, i don't see this happening

I have no idea, but i think AVG work's With Incredimail, so maybe Norton does too
Thanks for the advice. I did inquire about the multiple firewalls, and as far as she could see, Norton was the only one running.

PKWindows Firewall might also be running hidden in the background, but I've never heard it creating a problem.

I downloaded MUSIC Match 8 but when I try to install it, I get this message: "This version of MM does not support your computers operation system and will not be installed". I am running Windows 98SE and feel certain that MM 8 should be compatable . I tried MM 9 and can UNDERSTAND that it is not compatable with Windows 98. I am afraid that Spybot may have deleted some file or driver that I need. I'm currently using MM 7. It runs OK but would like to update to 8 and maybe gain some speed. I have a sony vaio desktop (PCV-RX830 in case you're wondering). I come back from 2 months of vacation to find that my parents took my computer to their workplace so they can use it. I see it working fine as it had two months ago. So we open it up, blow the inside of dust and I bring it back to my home. As soon as I start it up at home the blue ON light comes on and so do the whirling of the fans.
