Hi all!
I recently did an automatic upgrade of kazaa (3.2.1 or something). When I started it up, it looked for copyrighted files to throw into the "unshared" folder. Well, it started throwing EVERYTHING into that folder. Games, apps, everything. How can I reverse this? I did a restore, but there are still a whole bunch of files that are left in the folder and all of my windows office programs won't boot up. Is there a "hard" restore.

You are just going to have to copy all the Files to where they should have been, or just reinstall the Programs

if its putting Every thing on you Computer in the the Unshared folder that means you had your entire computer shared, that was not very smart.

99% of the files on Kazaa are Copyrighted , why would you CHANGE such a setting.

So there is no back up available??? Are you sure you were free of malware before all of this? It probably doesn't matter as you are looking at a full reinstall of everything. Do you have a real Windows CD? What SP was loaded on that MACHINE?

I am installing Win2000 on a computer. The hard drive was empty before the installation. The installation went fine, except I have only VGA graphics, and no sound. The PROBLEM is that I have an Intel chipset, and no drivers were installed for the chipset. I have no idea why.

I need a file called INFINST.EXE to proceed. I went to the Intel site, found the file, and tried to download it. It says it's downloading, but nothing happens. I have tried 2 different browsers with no luck.

I've tried to find alternate sites to download the drivers from, or the file itself, with no luck. I can find a site which will let me download a file of the same NAME, but an earlier version, which doesn't include WIN2000, but that's so far the best I can do.

I would appreciate suggestions as to how I may get the file.
If it would help, I have all the information on the computer itself; chipset, motherboard, etc., but since I have identified the problem that may not be relevant.

I'm not sure that file alone will solve your problem. I would not think that you would need the chipset drivers particularly. Do you happen to know what soundcard and graphics card the computer has? Do you have a make and model for the computer?

Get a sound card. The sound won't work unless you have a sound card!!!

I have no exxplanation, but I was finally able to download the file INFinst.exe from Intel's site. I'm going to give it a try, and I'll let you know what happens.

I've never had cause to play with (or LEARN) the system restore function, but no doubt someone else here will be able to help you with this if you're stuck.

1st question...I just received a CD with pics on it from my son however I cannot get it to open. It's listed as a cda file & looks like a musical icon (if that helps). Goto my computer click disc drive & musicmatch jukebox opens & of course no files listed?? Tried opening with Windows Media Player but it says theres no file available. I asked my son how he opens it on his pc & he stated just my computer/click disc drive & widows media player opens & shows all the pics on the cd. So what's up with that? (I redownloaded Media Player too just in case somethin was wrong with mine..
2nd question...if I want to put pics on a disc from my pc...do I just goto mypictures right click on pic & copy to disc drive or do I use easy cd creator & if so, do I save them as data files or what..??

Can you just browse to the CD via Windows Explorer and see what all is on it, without launching an application? You should be able to do that.

If you have Windows XP, you can burn photos do a CD by either method you mentioned. However, Roxio may have some special features for BURNING photos. If not, just burn them as data files. I have Nero, not Roxio. One of the choices in it for burning is Video/Pictures. I see, in Nero's Help, that that option ALLOWS some enhanced features for video or photos. This includes some layout, text, and background options. But, you can simply burn photos as data files if you are not interested such special options.Thank you for responding......as for doing the search thing, I can go into Media Player & select list all files & it will show only 1 file on the cd...it has the .cda. I know you say .cda is an audio file however this is the right disc, TOOK it over to my sons, stuck it in....mycomputer/disc drive & up comes mediaplayer & shows all the pics. Media Player is not the normal application for viewing photos. As to why the content of the CD can viewed on his computer but not yours, I can only speculate. Can you test it on another computer? If it won't work on another computer, I suspect the photos are not actually on the CD, but are perhaps being opened from his hard drive from whatever he burned to the CD. Thus, it will only work on his computer.

You did not answer my previous question? Can you just browse to the CD via Windows Explorer and see what all is on it, without launching an application? You should be able to do that. NOT MEDIA PLAYER, EXPLORER. And, how much space is consumed on the CD? Photos are LARGE files. How many photos are supposed to be on the CD? You should be able to get some idea whether the number of bytes on the CD seems realistic for what's supposed to be on it.

It also could be possible that he did not finalise the CD project...when this happens the CD looks blank except on the machine where it was burned...

How do you set up multiple accounts in Outlook Express? Also, if you have two accounts set up can you specify which account you want the email to show it is coming from? What if you want them both to show for different recipients?

Thanks for your help.To add email accounts, just go to Tools, Accounts, Mail tab, and click on Add. On the General tab of the Properties panel for an email account, you can check or uncheck the box for "INCLUDE this account when receiving mail or synchronizing". If you leave it UNCHECKED for a certain account, you can always manually make OE retrieve mail for that account.

If you have multiple users of a computer and want to keep email separate for each person, you can do that by CREATING a separate Identity for the other user(s). Alternatively, you could use one Identity and then use Message RULES to direct all mail to one recipient into one or more OE folders. Just a thought: MOZILLA Thunderbird is much more secure than OE and better at handling multiple email accounts.

In Excel, If I go to tool/options/edit, there is a drop down box allowing me to change the direction of the cursor move on hitting the enter key and that's fine.
My question is, if I change it from say right to down for a certain WORKBOOK, it also changes my in my other workbooks that I may want to move in a different direction.
Is it possible to make that selection SPECIFIC to a certain workbook or sheet instead of making it ACT globally which it seems to want to do?
I am using Excel 2002.

floyd.....I don't think you can achieve what you are looking for ......why dont you use the TAB key if you wish to move to the right or shift/tab if you wish to go left .........or use the ARROW keys

Is there a way to start (run) a program just after a REBOOT or before the log-gin(password) SCREEN?
I have a HOME Surveillance System that has to be running in order to get into the system remotely.
So if the system reboots or someone SHUTS down my computer at home, I cannot getting into the system remotely. The program runs only under my USER name and password, which I don't want to give to anyone.

hi im new here but wondered if anyone can help me, bit of a novice when it comes to computers but here is my problem.
i had a virus on my computer had if FIXED but the bloke that fixed it downloaded paint SHOP pro 8 trial version, this meant all my photos i got on my computer changed over to these files. when my trial run out my dh tried opening a picture and a box came up with what program to USE to open it and now i cant access my pictures through my hard drive. i can get the pictures on my computer through the camera software but i want to save them on to cd as we are suppose to be getting a new computer but the software i have doesnt let you do it you have top save it to harddrive first but when i do that and try to open a file it says file cannot be found!
i have downloaded the new paintshop pro 9 now to see if i could use that but it still says file cannot be found

Iv been having problems with my compaq presario 5000 since i got it and i wanted to try the factory reinstall to see if that would help but when i tried it and put the CD in and restarted it a blank blue screen came up. Any ideas?What is the error message? Did you insert the CD while the computer was running or boot with it? Have you changed any hardware, specifically the hard drive, since you got the machine.

How about a detail or two?I think the hard drive was changed once by the PREVIOUS owner.Well it MAY be IMPOSSIBLE to do from a restore CD if there was a hidden partition on the original hard drive that is needed to do this. Many old Compaqs were this way.

You may want to check with Compaq TECHNICAL support on their site. As you are not the registered original owner support may be limited, but try it and see.

I want to sell my old laptop with the OS and all of the software INSTALLED. However, my name comes up when opening many of the applications. Please be patient with me. I'm an old broad :-/and learning about computers slowly. I have just installed a webcam so I can use it to communicate with friends and family. A mike and headphones were a bonus with the webcam. there are 2 plugs. I have a Soundblaster sound card(there are 5 plugins ( from the back-left they are black,green,pink, blue, YELLOW ) and have no clue as to where to plug in the mike and headphones with my audio speakers already plugged in. Would be grateful for any assistance.
Thank you.Joni......I cant see the marking on the sound card but.....I think the Mic plugs into the red (pink) and you can plug your headset speakers into the green jack..thats the one that your desktop speakers plug into. I have two pcs and if I'm using the headset and mic I unplug my desktop speakers ( in the green socket ) and plug in the headset speakers.. ( look on the plugs on your headset ) and you will see a icon of a mic on one and a headset on the other ......If you look really closely at the plugs on your soundcard you should see the same icons as well......( use lots of LIGHT and your glasses )

Thanks for the quick reply. I can do what you suggested. Is there some way I can connect my audio speakers up without unplugging the headset? Anything to avoid crawling around under my desk...it's the getting up and down that is the problem !

Joni......Perhaps pull the tower out from under the desk and with a good light look at the sound card.......BESIDE the coloured plugs ...there should be a icon or sketch etched into the metal beside each coloured plug.......
You should see one that looks like a mike , another that looks like a headset and so on ......If you still have the booklet that came with the sound card .....it will tell you in there . If you can give me the SPECIFIC model of the sound card ......I can look it up and be certain .........

All of a sudden I get this error message when trying to import a txt file into an existing Access table. I've DONE it many times before. I can also do it on another computer with the same files and version of MS Office Professional 2002 and it works.
Also does anyone know how I can get a CD of SP-3 for Office as it will take me 12 hours to download it on my dialup and my ISP kicks me off before that. It's over 55 meg. This doesn't affect the above error as the other computer it works on isn't updated yet either.

FloydWell, being that this is a Microsoft product, I would think that you could buy it from the Microsoft website.... However, you can probably buy it at your local computer store as well...

dl65 Thanks, don't rub it in. LOL DIAL up is all I can get where I live and at 26.4 Kbps it takes forever. I did find the Cd order page finally and ordered it but STILL have the error message. I've Goggled my SELF to death trying to find a solution, but no luck. MS has a page on their instructions didn't work.

I could really use a little help. I'm running Outlook 2002 on 3 computers (all WINDOWS XP home).

Here is the scenario:
I update all my contacts, notes, etc. on my desktop. Then I want to update this same information on my two laptops for travel.

I "know" that I need to copy the .pst file but herein lies my problem.

With XP, there are 3 or 4 places that have the .pst FILES.
Each of them seems to have different mb's & I don't want to copy the wrong one.

They seem to be in different places....All Users, Lynn Huff (me)...then under C:\documents and settings,
Local settings.....

I AM SO CONFUSED as to which one exactly has the updated information...AND when I go to back it up on a disk/memory stick and recopy it to my other laptops,
do I use the exact same location to restore it? Also, do I run the risk of getting duplicates (which I have gotten before in trying to export/import-and it took me FOREVER to delete them).

Sorry to be so long winded....but the export/import thing just didn't WORK (I have all computers networked together, too).

LynnIf you do not specifically tell Outlook where to locate the PST files, it will place them in the default location which is under your logon/documents/settings. You can change this from Outlook. Tools--Email Accounts--Directory (View or Change...). Or from CONTROL Panel--Mail--Email Accounts.

Not very user friendly. If you travel or use more than one computer, it's easier to use Internet Mail (Yahoo and most ISP's have this) and dump Outlook.Delete all of your files on the 2 other computers, and then simply export all of your files from your main computer over to the other 2.

I'm so used to programs that have YOU back up and tell it where to go and Outlook seems to just automatically backup when you close it.

I put a disc with a program in the comp and the following message pops up

I have the options of Close or Ignore. Both options do the same thing and wont let the setup run. I know this program works with other computers because I just moved it from ANOTHER comp and am trying to put it on this one. Any suggestions? Alright.... I see.... I have a resolution! I want to record a MACRO (ACTION) that resizes a picture to 640 x 480 pixels and then saves the picture under the name: "original name - 640 x 480" When I RUN the action, it works fine resizing, but it saves the picture under the name of the picture I used to CREATE the macro and not the name of the picture to which I am applying it. I have a Sony computer running XP (home),
which has two led's on the front for the hard drives (c-d) and a blue LIGHT bar (to show it's powered up), under when running that will turn red if it is in standby.
Sometimes the light bar will flash blue and red (some sort of warning !!) with a bleeping sound.
Has anyone got any idea what this means.

Since when do Sony do Desktops?It wouldn't be connected to a battery issue then.

ps anyone else had problems with the heat :-?Some computers have heat sensors that trigger the alarm. The actual temps that trigger it can be adjusted in the BIOS on some models. I am not sure what Sony offers on desktops.

Heat can be caused by ambient temperatures, dust, improperly functioning fans, or general inadequate ventilation in the case.

You can probably check internal temps with Everest Home to see what is HAPPENING, but you have diagnosed the problem with the external fan.

As for solutions:
1) Check that all internal fans are working
2) Clear out any dust bunnies with a can of compressed air (DO NOT blow into the fans themselves without blocking the blades to keep them from spinning as you can damage fragile bearings!)
3) Check temps
4) Check BIOS to see what alarm thresholds are set at, if this is possible.

I was trying to reformat my computer with symantec ghost. When i PLACED the CD in the rom ro reformat, i always get an error saying Error 437 saying it can't open ghosterr.txt. I have no idea how to reformat my computer now. Can anyone help?Click on the following:

I've been using OUTLOOK 2003 in my desktop for YEARS. Because o traveling needs I bought an Acer laptop, I MADE and Outlook backup in the desktop HD, copied it in the laptop's one and imported it using the Outlook's 'Import and Export' function. Everything was OK for several days, but something happened because I found that Address Book file (the book icon) is empty but the Contacts one (personal card icon) is full.

Whenever I click on the Address Book icon (book), I GOT message "The address LIST could not be displayed. The Contacts folder associated with this list could not be OPENED..."

If I click OK in that message, I got "A new entry could not be added. Please use the Contacts module to create this entry". So I'm not even allowed to do it manually.

Does any one know how can I populate back the Address Book?

Did you save the backup file that you used? I always store the most recent one on a floppy.Looks like your address book has gone corrupted.

Delete it and then create a new one.Close Outlook. Go to the Control Panel-->Mail. Remove and re-add the personal folder files, for email and contacts. You may find that the problem is now fixed.

Hi all. I am using columns B:E to print on 4" labels. Different data goes in to three of these cells when the USER runs the macro, and I use ".AutoFit" to set the cell width on these three columns. Last of all, I want to set the width of column D so that columns B:E add to 4". Using ".Width" DIFFERS from ".ColumnWidth", but neither of these give the PIXEL number (when COMPARED to clicking the RIGHT side of the column on the column bar).
So how can I set the width of column D to equal 4 inches minus the sum of columns B, C and E?

Note: This spreadsheet will be opened on different users' desktops of which will have different screen resolutions than I have.

On an another machine the links are not opening at all. Says

How are these 2 related. :-?Word/Windows needs to know which program to USE to open up a hyperlink. You just recreated that knowledge.But with that hyperlink i was not opening a html file.

Then itself it was not opening.

Opening a file via a link in Word, how does this relate to IE.If the format of the link (which you may not be able to see) is file:// then, like http:// that is the kind of transaction that can be mediated by your internet browser.

You can also try uninstalling and reinstalling the program.ok i will try what you said..but this only happens "while" copying the cd..after that,everything becomes noraml again..Let us know. didn't work..i only run Daemon and soundmanager but i closed them both during the readingoperation..the slowdown remained..and btw,i have noticed that the sub=channel and main-channel buffer aren't filled while reading to image ..would it be some settings i have to change?Is it the latest version? I recently bought a newer VERSION of Microsoft Office, and I've been trying to delete the older version. I seem to delete it correctly, going into the control panel and deleting it from "add or remove programs." When I install the newer version, the old version is reinstalled. dl65 Daveyboy ..... It sounds like you still have some parts of Office XP still installed...... What components did you have installed ....let's see ...... Word , Excel , Outlook , Power Point , Access maybe and possibly Front Page. All components must be removed to be able to reinstall the new version ........ This would include any referances to Office XP LEFT in the registry . You should als have a look in C:\Programs and see if the folders are still there will some bits and pieces
