Greetings:

I have a Dell Dimension 8200 w/ WinXP Home (Service Pack 2). I just replaced the mobo w/ another 7G535 model for the system and everything works fine w/ the exception of the music CD's.

I am unable to play any store purchased music or burned music CD's.

I've TRIED Windows Media Player 8, 9 and 10, Winamp, RealPlayer, MusicMatch, etc. w/ no success.

I checked the cable from the CD-RW to the mobo and there is continuity. The system is able to install programs, etc. but NOT play or copy music cd's to the HDD. I also cleaned the CD-RW hoping that would help w/ no further success.

I've researched and installed the required Audio Codecs & Sound Drivers which works fine. Sound & music on the HDD are able to be play w/o a problem. When a music CD is placed into the CD-RW, the drive shows the files as 4kb each...that's it.

I've swapped out drives, cables, etc. and still a no-go. My last RESORT is to install a separate sound-card and if that doesn't work, I'll reformat the HDD, reinstall XP w/o the Service Packs and see what happens.

If ANYONE has any further input or can see something that I've MISSED, please give this post a shout.

MikeyBInitially I was suspecting that the CD's had some form of copy-protection on them, but seeing as you are unable to play any music on CD, I'm becoming more doubtful. In the UK, there is the odd CD that is protected, but no-one bought them ones so it's quite rare to find them.

If you live Stateside, I can imagine that they are a bit stricter on that front, but even then I doubt that every CD will have some from of copy-protection on it.

It's the only thing I can think of. Either that, or something on your system that is detecting that you have a CD-RW drive and preventing Music CD's from playing, which is not outwith the realms of possibility.

I'll keep an eye on this post though - I want to see how this turns out.termn8tr.......Do you have a small grey audio cable running from the back of your cd - ROM down to pins on the MOBO ? That may well be the reason . There would appear to be no problem with your on-board sound card or you wouldn't be able to play music from your HARD drive ......

I use Windows 98SE. I use Firefox as my default browser. I use Mozilla 1.7.3 as my default mail program. Whenever I try to click a highlighted address at any site, I get this message.
"Cannot send mail. No mail program is set up to send mail using INTERNET shortnets"
I have checked and made sure that I have Mozilla set as my default mail program. Have posted this problem at Mozilla forums and searched other SITES but no one seems to be able to help me. Would appreciate any help that ANYONE can GIVE me. Thanks in advance.

DocTHIS IS my computer so i log in as the administrator. I have had shockwave before. i had to redo my computer and now i cant get it to download right I also cant get it to download onto my other computer in the other room. do you think it could be my internet i have sbc high speed. i also cant get the msn messenger to download right on either computer . It will download but wont go on computer it says that there is a file missing. this is driving me crazy. i DONT understand why it is doing this on both computers. thanks for trying to help

ViperThe hacks can range from EXTREMELY useful to rendering the unit useless...
When you hook up an iPod to a PC it will see it as a mass storage device and treat it like an external HDD.

OK, I need some help badly. My computer just started ACTING up really bad. After being on for a while, the screen will refresh and the name of my DESKTOP icons disappear. Then when I try to open something it says "Insufficeint System Resources ...." then there is a file or folder after it. I don't know what is wrong with it.
After it does this it will go to the Blue Screen of Death and say BAD_POOL_CALLER.

dl65 I am on Windows XP. I cant do a system restore, because I can only go back to yesterday. It is now shutting down with another serious error. Then I installed my backup registry and now all my stuff is messed up. I can't install or uninstall Norton.

Should I erase the harddrive and just reinstall everything???
Is there anything I can do to fix this without erasing everything???

dl65 OK, I used Microsoft Antispy and it deleted some files and crap. I think it deleted some that I needed or has done something else to the registry.

I installed Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 the other day and it ran fine. The next day I had a couple of programs running then they kinda froze when I tried to close them. I know my system can handle the game. Anyway after the programs did close, I couldn't read the names of the stuff on my desktop screen, just the icons. Then when I tried to open anything an error came up. It said "Insuffiecient System Resources......" and had the location after it. Each program had a different location after it. Then it would shut down the computer and say BAD_POOL_CALLER.

So then I decided to install an older registry. Now my Norton antivirus is like on the computer but not. I can't install it from the cd because it stops and says installation error. The computer is still shutting down after awhile, this time saying PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA.

I also thought that it was my new DVDRW that I installed but I dont think it is. PLUS I think all my drivers are updated.

So there it is. Any thoughts??ahol29 ........

It's odd that Antispy would have removed registry entries required to make your system work .....

That's why the Antispyware app suggested that you back up your registry in case you delete something you need .......

When you removed Noton you didn't remove all referance to it ....... I think what you need is a " Norton remover " ........ D/L this ....C:\Documents and Settings\Don\Desktop\Tools\Norton remover\Norton_Remover.zip.html
Run this app.. and then try installing Norton again .......

i used roxio to create a dvd on a dvd+rw. i CLOSED the program, and now the disc will not eject. i did not use drag to disc. i tried the drive letter and right clicked. but did not ejectIf it's something as simple as a software lock, rebooting the computer will solve the problem. If it's a physical problem (disk jam) then the first thing to do (after switching off the PC) is to insert a straightened PAPERCLIP into the TINY hole on the front of the drive, until the disk ejects. You should not feel too much pressure.Ive See Ez Cd Creator Lock Drives Out from the User Before. For No Good Reason at all.

What I have done in those situations is , Uninstalled Roxio , and Rebooted the computer , you usually Regain CONTROL. and then i would go Get Nero and use that instead.

I don't Much LIKE Ez -CD/DVD , but after Reinstalling it usually work as normal again(Thats Badly IMHO)

I have Windows 98SE, with a Pentium II processor(266MHz), and a Windows Media Player 9,the highest one I can have. The WMP9 use to work great, but recently it started freezing up right after I open it. In the device options I have two CD-ROMS, F is just a player, but G is a CD-RW, and the CD-ROm I burn my CD'S on. Now when I click the speaker ICON and PRESS properties, the property box gets a red square in it,it doesn't show me anything and then it FREEZES up completely. CONT/ALT/DELETE doesn't respond. I have to reset/restart everytime. I have removed WMP9 and reinstalled it twice, without any luck. Can someone help me, PLEASE? Or am I doomed to be without my music until I buy a completely new computer? There are all kinds of registry cleaners / repair programs out there ......A word of CAUTION ...always backup the registry before deleting anything just in case ......
I use the FOLLOWING .....Registry First Aid .......works well.
SYSTEM Mechanic 5 Professional ......works well also and has a ton of other nice features .
REGVAC.....very powerful.....but its not my favourite.
Advanced system Optimizer V 2.01.4 also works well.....
Best thing to do is do a google search for registry cleaners.....( I just did that and got 361,000 + results)
D/l a few of them that offer a 30 day trial and try them ...then decide what you like ........and go for it ......
Don't get taken in by some of the advertising ......Just because they say its the best ...that doesnt mean squat......

Now when I attemt to RUN my online games they lock up and I have to restart my PC to get it running again. This problem started last NIGHT and has been GOING on every sence. I hope I am in the right section. I only know a little about computer so please be patient. I have a problem with my HP scanjet 4200c not communication. I have windows 98se and the scanning software is HP presicion scan. I have gone right through the HP site looking for some help and can't find any. When I go to the scanners properties it takes ages to open and then it says on port \\.\HP4200C000 and the status is unavailable. I have unpuged the scanner and re plugged it in. I have taken the software off my computer and put it back on again and have also updated the drivers, nothing seems to be working. I have tried the other usb cable and it dosn't help. I know the usb connections are fine because I have tried my modum in both and it works. The scanner has previously worked fine, but I find when I have put on my printer I have problems. The printer has the other sort of cable and is on LPT1 port. I am now getting QUITE frustrated with this problem because I can't seem to solve it. I find if the scanner is working I have the opposite problem that the printer dosn't communicate. I recently had my computer reformatted hoping this may fix the problem but unfortunatly it didn't.
Please help me it would be much APPRECIATED. If I have left anything out please tell me and I will try and answer the questions. SORRY it took a lot to explain but I tried not to leave anything out.

[glb]Flame[/glb]I am guessing it is because it has worked before. I thought it may have had something to do with the printer because it seemed when the printer is working the scanner isn't. So LAST night I took both off and started over. I put the scanner on first and still didn't work without the printer. So I am totally lost. One day it worked and the next it didn't. Maybe the printer software left something on my computer. I have no idea. The scanner hasn't been bumped or anything it is in exactly the same spot it has always been. I might see if I can find a friend who can put it on their computer and see if it works on theirs and go from there. If it works on their computer it has to have something to do with something on my computer and I am determined to find out what.

So many problems! Hopefully this will be my last one for awhile! I use Windows 98SE with a Pentium II processor. When I am using the Windows Help files,(which I do QUITE often), the right side(Where the requested information goes,duh) vanishes completely whenever I try to TROUBLESHOOT something. Once I have checked the appropriate problem, the screen disappears. I have enlarged it, changed to the Internet Explorer BROWSER(which I normally don't use), even after Windows 98 had to be reinstalled(It's a long STORY), it still isn't appearing. Now this really isn't a big inconvenience, but since everyone here, seems so smart and WILLING to help, I thought someone might have had a similar problem and would know what to do. I have created a GIF graphic in Photoshop (6) for a friend's new business - intended mainly for business cards and web site. She has taken it down to the signwriter who wants to blow it up for computer printing to OUTSIDE sign size .... maybe 15 feet! He wants it in vector and not raster. He said to save it as an EPS file or A1. I put it into EPS, then enlarged it, but no success.... it went all mushy. I would appreciate any INPUT to help me resolve this without too much head banging. :-?You would pretty much need to create the image from scratch. Bitmap (raster) images do not enlarge well, because they are based on square pixels. Vector images are based on paths - curves, lines, etc, and can enlarge to any size, but tend not to look as natural.

Programs such as CorelDraw have a bitmap tracing feature, but the results are rarely satisfactory. You need really to start from scratch. You could do this by importing the bitmap into a vector-based package (InkScape is the free one, otherwise CorelDraw, or Abode Illustrator or something like that) and then manually tracing over your image. Beware: if you have never used a vector editor before, it is a completely different way of designing.Thanks for that, Rob. I did spot Inkscape in your lists of programs, so might have to go into that and have a go. I had a feeling the pixels would enlarge in blocks using my original; I couldn't see how they could SMOOTH out. Back to the drawing board! That'll teach me to do a involved cartoon! If you're at all artistic, I think you will get on well with vector-based programs. Particularly for CARTOONS. You immediately have reusability - you can group several lines/curves and copy them all to another cartoon without having to isolate them from the background. This can be a much more elegant solution for lineart than using a bitmap editor with layers.

I haven't personally used Inkscape, since I have access to Fireworks, Illustrator and CorelDraw, but one very good thing is that it is under CONTINUAL development and is a very active open source project. So you can expect it to keep on getting better.

Good luck, and maybe you'll post some samples of your work at some point!

Why dont you look at your MOBO ( motherboard) MANUAL.....and it will show you exactly what all the things are that are mounted on the MOBO and PROVIDE you lots of info .........If you cant find your MOBO manual ...look it up online ....I'm sure you'll find it there .....and you will learn a lot about your system ......
Please dont just jump in there and start pulling out ANYTHING that moves .........

I edit a line in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file to SAY:
LOADHIGH=C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD001
This and another line in CONFIG.SYS are added to get my CD-ROM drive to read in DOS as drive E:\. It WORKED once, but I restarted my COMPUTER and EVER since then it hasnt worked. In fact, everytime I restart my computer, that line is not in AUTOEXEC.BAT. I even re-type it and restart the computer in DOS mode and it still does not read E:\ as my CD-ROM drive. Can somebody please help me with this problem.

A friend of mine has sent a few images to me in an email as attachments. Wh
en others send me image attachemnts I can right CLICK on the file within the
email to save it to my HARD drive.

When THIS friend sends images from his Mac, the Inbox screen shows that ther
e is no attachement (as in, there is no paperclip next to the email) yet the
images are embedded within the email at the bottom. I can still save them
to my hard drive, but I lose the original file name (which I need) and it sa
ves as a bmp as opposed the jpg format he sent them in.

Why would this only happen with his attachments? Is it something HE is doin
g, or is there a setting I can change to solve this?

Get your friend to send the email in plain text. Then the image won't be embedded within the HTML, but will appear as a normal attachment.Two points don't make sense to me. I can right click on an image in an Outlook messages, select Save PICTURE As, and the original name is retained (why would it change?) and Outlook shows, as file type, the original file format (GIF or JPG). I can select BMP for saving, but it's not what Outlook first displays in the Save as type box.Could it be Outlook is having trouble identifying the extensions from the MAC ? ?

after a major PROBLEM i reformatted my hard drive and installed NERO6.6.0.1
NERO refuses to burn "DISC at once" to cdr i GET an error message on the last 2 tracks informing me there is a tracking error.
I have no problems burnin DVD videos or iso''s or cdr's in track at once mode--even if the "readbuffer" seams very active
I have tried a clean install with no success.

Hi guys,

I have a music making programme, but after I open it, use it, and close it down, I can't get any other sound, or applications that use sound, to work on my PC any more.

So I could play a movie, or soundclip FINE, but then if I did something in the music programme, I would have to restart my machine before I was able to play these again.

I have posted on relevant music sites, but no-one seems to be able to help. Although, someone did suggest that it sounds like my music SOFTWARE is not "releasing the driver" once I close the programme.

Any help or suggestions would be GRATEFULLY received!

After browsing the cubase forums, even finding your thread LOL, I think you'd be far better off searching for your answer there, or at steinberg.
There is also a huge amount if info in the cubase download/update link at the top of the page.Newer versions of programs also solve problems. If you are the registered owner you could try their support on their WEB site.yeah.. only thing is that they steinberg don't support my version anymore.

But maybe it is time that I bought some new software anyway... bit strapped for cash at the moment theough.

Whenever I close Firefox and then restart it, it always opens not maximized and with all my toolbars open, which I don't want. No matter how I set it and then close the window, it does the same thing when I open it again.

I read that you can right click on the top bar and set something for advanced options, but when I right click the top bar all I get is Restore, Minimize, Close, etc.

I ran CCleaner and SpySweeper yesterday, clearing my firefox cache, cookies, history, and dl history, and I don't know all that SpySweeper cleared, but I think it stopped some registry key from working. I've tried reinstalling FireFox, but that did nothing. I'm afraid of uninstalling it then reinstalling it, since if it's not a FireFox related problem I might delete all my bookmarks and extensions/themes and still not fix the problem.

It seems extremely unlikely that it's a virus/malware related problem, but that could be it too. Can someone help?

Oh, I just noticed something else too. When I go to Bookmarks -> Bookmark this page, I try to click "OK" but nothing happens and it won't let me save the bookmark unless I go to the Bookmark Manager.What if you uninstall it and then reboot and install the latest version? Sometimes the easiest fix works.I have the same problem and its been happening since about 2 updates ago.

Also every time my firefox is updated i lose all my bookmarks and favi icons etc.

I'm new to FTP server's and need some help on setting up one to access from any internet connection. I have FORWARDED ports 21, and set up FILE zilla, I can access the FTP server localy on my home network but I forwarded port 21 to my computer and added exceptions to windows firewall to port 21 for filezilla server. I created a DYNdns account and it I can access the settings on my router. But just can't get the FTP server from my freiends Internet connection. Please shed some LIGHT on this subject. Thanks.

i have an older computer which was running Windows XP, but for some reason, both the CD drives quit working (they just won't open). You can see the drive letters for them, but if you click on them it says "no data" or something like that.

My start-up was starting to get quirky so decided to do a "Norton Go-back" and it quit mid-stream, now all I get is an opening screen, then go-back starts (but does not respond to a request to restore) and then Windows XP starts to load but the computer screen goes black, and nothing else seems to happen.

Any suggestions? (remember, i don't seem to have access to the CD drives).

It's a Compaq Pressario "5000 Series", 5WV280 with 900MHz AMD Athlon Processor and 512mb ram, with at least 30 gig memory. I'm running Windows XP Professional and it had been working fine for a few years up until recently.

Can't exactly remember what led to it's current state but here's what happens when I start it up now:

-first there's just a white flashing CURSER in the top LH of screen
-then the "Go-back" screen shows, saying "Press space bar to restore" (or something SIMILAR) (Note pressing the space bar does nothing).
-The "time bar" goes to zero and then there's a very brief screen of flickering horizontal white bars (every inch or so) (maybe 2-3 seconds)
-then the Windows start-up logo appears (windows logo on black screen with that processing bar below with the little blue things moving through it)
-the blue INDICATORS move smoothly, hestitate, start up again, hesitate, start up again, then
I seen my mouse arrow on a black screen (I can move the mouse and the arrow moves)
-occasionally there's also an hour-glass, while the hard-drive light flickers, but eventually that stops and that's it. It doesn't go any further. I should be getting the blue screen to select accounts but that never shows up. I even try clicking the curser where the account icon should be but nothing else happens.

Quick question, can you get into the computer and check the CD Drive Connections?Yes, I have tried that. That is, I've made sure they were securely plugged in to the right spots. My suspicion re: the drives (I have two) is that there's something during boot-up which disables them. I vaguely recall something showing on a black screen during boot-up back when it WOULD boot up. I'll try to get into safe mode (It's 3 AM here, and I'm too tired now to try it, but I will when I get up).Just so you know, CD Drives don't use drivers.

When you're back, can you check to see if the CD Drive is detected in the BIOS.So you have Norton GoBack installed on this machine ? ?
Could be part of the problem...

Remove a side panel and all power connections to the machine.
Double-check all the cabling to the drives.
Plug it back in and at startup press whatever key to enter Setup.
See if the drives are listed in the BIOS.

Never, I repeat, never pay for Antivirus. Big no-no's: Symantec/Norton, McAfee, trial based scanners, TrendMicro. There is no reason to pay for antivirus unless you are using it on a commercial machine.

I have been using Ulead Video studio for a while now, just using music, pictures and writing. HOWEVER, I have put some home footage on there to make a video, and it will only stay on a couple of minutes when I am trying to EDIT this. It just restarts itself. Hi everyone, my friend was having problems with her packard bell laptops drive, it wouldnt OPEN any discs, she checked device manager and it was showing there, but somehow she deleted it, so it's not showing in "my computer" either now. When she puts a disc in it spins but nothing shows, i've suggested installing some burning software that might make it appear again or even belarcing it, I dont know if she has tried it yet, but has anyone got any suggestions please?

I dont unfortunately have her laptop here at mo, but I thought after it being deleted in device manager it wouldnt help with a system restore, but I'll hopefully have the laptop tomorrow. As for new hardware nothing comes up, she has rebooted it lots of times and the disc just spins and nothing comes up in new hardware or my computer. So I wouldnt think it would come up in BIOS. Tomorrow will tell I suppose.

Sometimes computers are such a nightmare!

OKAY, I am running a Compaq Presario with XP Home edition w/SP3
Somehow my printer stopped working recently, the computer shows that it is no longer installed… EASY enough to fix, just reinstall the driver, right?

Well, no, EVERY time I try to install it I get and error message saying; “Cannot continue, the Print Spool Service has been stopped, restart the comp…etc.”

So, I try to start the Print Spool service and get the error message; “C:\WINDOWS\System32\Com\Comexp.msc
The archive is either in unknown format or damaged”

Can anyone please tell me how to fix this?
Hopefully there’s a simple Hotfix!

I make a file in my PC (DELL) with Norton Ghost. It was Windows XP Pro edition in XP.GHO. I used -fdsz switch for creating image and use High compress option. But Now I notice that I can't apply this XP ghost in Toshiba or IBM PCs. How can I do this? Mean to SAY I want to apply it to all PCs? Looking for a way to convert some of my music to XA audio format, and then name it same NAMES to the names of radio selections to MATCH up with programmed station FILE name pointers, so that I can listen to modern music while playing the game.

I see lots of CONVERTERS to convert XA to WAV, but I dont want to port the music in that game out, I want to replace the all but 1 song annoying music with my choice of music.

Any SUGGESTIONS on what tool to use to do this?

how can i tell if the computer i want to buy can support the video card i want to buy separately. and is it worth upgrading from a Quad processor Q6600 to a Quad processor Q9400 for 200$ and do i really need a better processeor. Intel quad cores are very very good, but there really only useful if you can USE them.

Think about it this way, if you GO out and buy a race car and drive it in city traffic all you have is bragging rights, its the same with a processor of this kind.

However if you do ALOT of 3d modeling, CAD or high end gaming then a quad core will be good for you.

Also KEEP in mind that these processors are 64bit.

Is the upgrade from the Q6600 to Q9400 worth it?

Well maybe, you do get a better clock speed, and a higher front side bus, the cache to me seems lower actually on the 9400 but it really depends you would have to really need it.

As for the video card most of the time the only thing is the interface if the video card is AGP you will need a motherboard with a AGP socket, if it is pci express you will need a PCI express enabled mother board.

The other important factors are your power supply Video cards tend to use arround 100 WATS so make sure you have that spare and then some, also the case must be able to fit them, heh, some cards are very big. Other than that you don't need much else.

However there should be enough infomation about the device on the manufactures websiteAn important thing to note from Intel...

Processor numbers are not a measure of performance.

A q6600 is basically fast enough by any ones standards(apart from, of course, games that were released a month ago at 100+FPS.

The graphics card will 99.9% have to be PCI-Express, so this is the kind you want. if youare unsre go to the motherboard's page on the manufacturers site.
( If you cannot find it post the motherboard model, we can find it for you.)

Not SURE if this is a hardware or software problem but I am guessing software.
My printer will only print blank pages. I reinstalled the software from the original disc. Result was a line at the top FOLLOWED by nothing. The print head still works fine as the machine copied a page and PRINTED it out no problem when I pressed the buttons on the printer unit. Any help much appreciated.
