I've SET up the parental control on my DAUGHTERS PC, limiting her time on the internet however I have found out that while she can't get on LINE she can still use MSN messenger.

I don't mind her being online when she has nothing else to do i.e. homework but with MSN she gets distracted and I thought that if I ENABLED the parental CONTROLS she could still use her PC but not get on line which I have found in not the case.

Am I missing something

My dad is working on a video of our holiday.
Now he riped some music files from a CD to MP3.
His OS(windows XP Pro SP3) is in Dutch.
But for some strange reason the Windows media player would only install in English.
now the problem is that windows media player riped the files to My music.
In dutch version it's "MIJN muziek" so it made a new FOLDER.
BUT: the folder isn't showing?!
I know it's there cause when we search for the music it does find it at location D:/Johan/My music.
But when he tries to navigate to that locating in windows explorer the My music folder isn't showing. I've checked the box of showing HIDDEN files, exc. it's STILL not showing.
When I use Firefox I can navigate to that location.
Anyone knows what it might be? It's a really strange problem
And as the video editing prog uses windows explorer I can't navigate to it to add music to the vid. And I also can't type the location, It does work in the normal windows explorer when I just type the location. but that build in one in the editing prog doesn't ALLOW you.

If he wants a nice graphic, install Windows 98 on a FAT32 and use the tools in windows 98. As I recall, it looked so cool seeing the sectors move from here to there. You could spend hours doing this. I BOUGHT a new laptop at Best Buy. They insisted I buy antivirus from them but I didn't. It came with 2 months of Norton 360 and I wanted to see what you guys recommend before I buy more software.

I know I had Norton on my old desktop pc and it worked good but it seemed to attach itself to everything and really bog my pc down.

They were also trying to sell me some Anti spyware software.

So tell me what do I really need? I want this laptop to last quite a while with no problems.

I am a genealogy volunteer teacher. I need all of the following because my personal and teaching files are getting unmanageable and was hoping not to have to buy more than one program. I think you're simply not going to find one program that will do everything you've listed here. The organizing you want can be done using a program or programs that pertain to a specific task. For example, you need to use an email program to organize your email; no other program is going to organize your email.

I am running a windows batch file which will ACCEPT a single value as a parameter.
The value is either 0 or 1.

Inside the batch file i want to check if the parameter is not 0 or 1 then it will generate an error.

Is it POSSIBLE to transfer data files from my sent, deleted, etc. folders from outlook 2000 to Outlook Express 6 folders. Ok so i've just started learning vb, to create some UI's for work and there are (as some of you may know) a lot of good tutorials online. However because of where I live I have no access to internet, I do have access at work.

So my question is can I download the video tutorials which are .swf and watch them LATER offline.

Can anyone recommend a good PROGRAM?

I have been using a bundled copy of PM 8 the disk of which appears to be giving up.

I am reluctant to buy PM8 as it has not been updated in so long and does not support VISTA so when I do have to upgrade it wouldn't work for me.

Currently running XP and the included paritioning software does't appear to let me get where I need to be anywhere near as easily as PM8 did.

I need to be able to partition and format large drives. I currently have two 500GB in my main machine.

I need to be able to do this PRIOR to installation of windows.

Once you set a master default blocking SETTINGS, you can always have the opendns service to always unblock or block sites it's missed.What do you mean by "block"?Blocking a website, which means that if you try GOING to the specific website in question, you will be routed to an OpenDNS page saying that the site has been BLOCKED.

So in the settings, if you wanted facebook to be blocked but the settings that supposedly will automatically do it doesn't, then you can add in the custom filter section to always block the site.

I wanted to reach out to the savvier computer folks with a specific query. What I am interested in is a software program or a combination of several programs that COULD conduct data mining to determine an individual’s footprint on the internet (i.e. registered with different sites, chat ROOM affiliations, possible interests, hobbies, employment, handles, database registrations…) – this could be used to track and or find someone.

Would something like this possible? How would I go about assembling this? As I would be looking at numerous individuals, I would like to use a reliable software program to optimize the search efficiency.

Essentially the only information that would be AVAILABLE for input in the search parameters would be the name of an individual/email address. Although I have used Google, Yahoo, Dogpile, Metasearch to search for information… it seems to me that there is so much irrelevant info found or nothing at all. Is there a way to write a program that would combine the features of these search engines so that the searches would be compatible and not redundant? I know that search parameters have to be precise, but I would only have very limited PERSONAL identifiers available!

Hello,i hope SOMEONE can HELP me. i have a old computer runing windows 98SE that i use to scan files that i download.i wiped the hard drive and REINSTALLED. Avg7.5 is what i use .now it worked before,but now that i reinstalled it after i reinstalled win98 it will Onley scan in Safe mode. Everytime i try to scan a file is says "Cannot open; not checked". now it does that with any file be it one file or the whole hard drive. i hope someone can help me out because it just dont make any sense.

I have been suing the secunia software scanner ONLINE, and every time I use it, it always says i have 3-4 versions of it on my computer. This doesnt seem RIGHT to me. They are found in the following locations:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\AOL\Flasha.ocx
C:\i386\Flash.ocx
I already deleted one in system32, and then it was replaced when i re-installed adobe flash player, so i guess thats fine...

Unless you want to clear up the old files for more Hard Drive space.3-4 versions, or 3-4 files? In any case, I can see TWO.just because they are on the computer, doesn't mean they are installed. And you really can't tell which ones are installed anyway, and so you can't be sure which ones are safe to delete. (although the ones that are registered will likely be in system32)

My ITUNES wasn't able to find original files over the network(on a diff. computer) so I put them on an external drive. I've DRAGGED this folder of songs, called "music" into the itunes music folder. Now Itunes is set to look here for songs, and in this folder are all the artists listed and my folder music. The problem is when I click in the itunes library to play one of these, the original still can't be found. When I go to the itunes music folder, open my music folder, play a song , it PLAYS in itunes. I don't understand what the problem is. I do see that the songs under artists are all MPEG4 and my songs under music are mp3's. Does this make a difference? It seems like I finally have the files in the spot where itunes looks, but it's still not working. I must be close? Right?Did you first place the music from your external hard drive into a folder, then put them into itunes?I suspect it won't read sub-directories...The music on the external drive CAME of the computer, as a folder "Music", "Music" had sepearte folders, 50's, 60's, 70's etc. I dragged these to the itunes music folder. Then in itunes under file, I added folder to library, went to the itunes music folder and clicked on "Music". I then had the songs listed under artist, like itunes was already doing. It isn't working though, all I have now are 3 copies of every song in the library. Itunes looks to this site for all music correct? Whycan't it find these files. and i think i know why, but i don't know how to fix this... so this is what i did yesterday -

i went to C:\WINDOWS\system32 and opened driver verifier manager (verifier.exe).
next at "select task window" i pressed on "create standard settings" OPTION, next at "select what drivers to verify" window i pressed on "Automatically select all drivers INSTALLED on this computer" option, then pressed finish.... Then rebooted my computer for the changes to take effect and it was lagging like h**l... it took like 20 minutes to initialize all "start PROGRAMS" instead of 1.... and it laggs like h**l all the time.. and CPU usage is on 100% all the time... i have no IDEA how to fix this... please help me.. thanks..

It's a bad idea to allow Windows to try and find better drivers for any machine...manuf. drivers should always be the first choice.Why do so many people write the word 'lags' with two letter 'g's?

I agree with Patio. Your motherboard, display hardware, etc, drivers could now be replaced by standard drivers of Windows own choosing.
If you have System Restore enabled, restore to a point before you used verifier.exe...

Hello. I work online at a university and students are upgrading gradually to Vista. I get .docx documents that I have to grade but my MS Office Word 2003 just turns it into jibberish when it tries to convert it. Can I do anything on my end to make these files readable, or do the students need to do something on their end before sending? I think I recall that the student can choose to "SAVE as" and then choose the .doc ending, but I'd rather not ask them to do this. Many are even more technologically challenged than I am! So, if you can tell me how I can handle this on my end I would appreciate it.

As for the high-priority updates, no, I didn't do anything about that because my automatic updates are always on and I assumed that I had everything. As a matter of fact, at this very moment, some sort of updates are coming into my COMPUTER. I saw that some of them were named as security for Office 2007. I don't have Office 2007, of course, but maybe these will help.
I'll check again after these are installed to see if the conversion works. Is there anything else I should be doing in the meantime?

To solve the current problem, I thought I could just download the necessary conversion program. I did that, and as you know, it didn't work. So, I uninstalled it and went to the page you said to go to, to see if there were any urgent updates I needed to install first, before reinstalling. First, Microsoft told me I had to use Explorer, so I came out of my Firefox (which usually downloads all my updates) and went to Explorer (which I never use unless absolutely necessary). Next Microsoft issued a reliability check, which my newly bought computer promptly failed. Apparently this was not an official version of whatever needed to be official. So, back to square one. I can't download the safety features. So, does this mean I shouldn't try to download the converter again, either, or, should I GIVE the converter another try, even though microsoft seems to be blocking the safety patch.
(And, isn't this weird because I'm constantly getting updates through my Firefox browser--what's going on here with MS?)
Please let me know what to do next to try and be able to convert .docx to .doc.

You can convert it on that WEBSITE. I only discovered SVG format the other day on Wikipedia. I didn't bother to look for a way to convert them. I'm glad I know now.

I am trying to get around using a pivot table in a shared workbook. The Pivot Table is making the file too large, too slow, and isn't refreshing the data. The refresh data option is greyed out when the workbook is shared and even though I set it up to refresh on open, it isn't updating the data.

I thought of just CREATING a table with formulas in each cell to do the count.

Here is what I need to do and I need help with the formula. Once I can do it for one cell in the new table, I can duplicate it for each of the other cells in the table.

Sheet 1 is where we track PROJECTS by employee, project type, and status.
Column A = Employee initials (8 employees)
Column B = Project Type (3 types of projects)
Column C = Project Name
Column D = Project Status (9 different status CODES)

In Sheet 2 is the pivot table that tracks the number of projects for each employee by type and status. Currently we have a pivot table in sheet 2, but when I set up the workbook to be shared by all the employees, it won't refresh in shared mode. Ideally, we want this table to show an accurate count everytime one of the employees updates the status of a project or a new project line is added to Sheet1. We use the count to DETERMINE workload for each employee and to assign new projects.

What I want to do is create a formula so that I get an accurate count:
If Sheet1 Column A = "EmployeeJD"
And Sheet1 Column B = "ProjectType1"
And Sheet2 Column D ="ProjectStatus1"

I need to get a count of the number of rows where all three criteria are met. I tried COUNTA, COUNTIF, SUMPRODUCT, but can't get it set up to return the correct results. I know that the data in the columns is correct because each of the columns has a drop-down LIST validating the correct format.

Recently I have seen some CDs of 700mb (Windows XP 9 in 1, Windows 2003 Server 5 in 1... etc etc) which has DATA of aprox. 4GB.

If we see the property of CD it shows the SIZE around 700mb, But if we select all files in the CD and see property to find SIZE we can see the DATA size is around 4gb!

Also If we COPY the that CD using any CD Burner software (like Nero 7) we can copy the CD to another CD of 700mb.

How can we make 4GB of DATA to burn in a CD and What Softwares we need to use for that. Please guide. I have searched many PLACES, Including this site, But did not get any help.

Thanks... It is not possible to put gigabytes of data onto a CD without serious compression. If such a task could be easily accomplished it would be all over the Internet. The capacity of a blank CD/DVD is determined by the media itself AND the type of burner used...
There is NO workaround for this but if you find one by all means let us know...

Hello every body

Is it possible to obtain a screen dump or screen print from a Windows Media Player when it is running. I often visit the FOLLOWING website, which is very fascinating to watch.

The QUALITY is quite good. However if I make a screen dump by using PrtScn button and open it in a graphics software package. All I get is a black blank screen. The only way I have done is to make an actual photograph of the monitor screen. But this is not all that good.

Is there a free program around which allows me to do this.

My computer is Windows XO SP2, I have 160Gb of Hd, and the graphics utility I use, is an oldie Ullead PhotoImpact Version 4. It is a good one and I'm comfortable with.

After reformatting my computer I get this notice that I have 30 days to "Activate my Windows" I am on windows for now but limited to 30 days?

Does this have anything to do with "Product Key" numbers on my XP cd I use to format the computer? I did have to do it I think three times and now I over used the "Product Key" number and I have to get a new one?Is the operating system CD supplied by the manufacturer of the computer...or did you purchase it separately?

If you purchased it separately...you may have a problem during activation...and may need to contact Microsoft and explain to them you needed to reinstall the operating system...and they will supply you with a valid Product Key to use.

Originally the computer was a Mil2M. He did not like the M2M so he had a shop change it over to an XP home edition. However the tower casing is an hp pavilion 7950. Now the sticker on the side of the tower is Mil2M and the CD that he gave me with the XP is for XP reformatting.

I ran an internet search, and didn't come up with anything, either.If you reformat a computer time and again using the same activation key eventually Windows thinks it is a pirated key being used on multiple machines. Unfortunately the VOICE at the other end of the line can be very FOREIGN sounding, but they are very helpful.
The 1800 number is listed on the activation screen, when you select to ring Microsoft to activate the Windows.

Does anyone know how to SET up an router for streaming its for a community radio station. OjasI guess what you mean is that you want to FEED audio from your radio broadcast into the INTERNET. I think that gets to be rather EXPENSIVE. It eats up bandwidth to run it 24 by 7 all the time. So you will notice that there are only a few commercial stations that really do actual streaming. Instead, they do 'audio on demand', which is easier on the bandwidth until you get to the point where enough people are tunded in to justify a STEADY feed.
Is this a college station? Does the college have a dedicated server and a better than T1 connection into the internet? The streaming audio can use as much resources than about 10 to 20 average users on line. The streaming audio is like a FTP, a constant stream of data going out. But with a big difference. The FTP is from files that can be sent out in bursts and lost packets will be resent. Real time Streaming is even more demanding that FTP feeds.
If you do a search you will find that people are confusing audio on demand with streaming. Streaming once in awhile is not really streaming. Audio on demand would be like your radio station would not broadcast anything until you knew at least on person was listening. That is not really broadcasting.
Does this make sense? In other words, there is a lot more involved that just letting the router pass stuff. And yes, you have to get a much better router to handle the demand.
But if all you want is audio on demand, it is a piece of cake. Nothing to it.

i have a windstream router, and to make a long story short, i need to know if there is something out there i can download for it. as it's not supported by my laptop. i've a compaq presario RUNNING vista HOME premium. Is it a wireless router? Are you trying to connect WIRELESSLY with your laptop? Is Windstream your ISP? And, they provided the router with your DSL SERVICE?Instead of connecting the router to your laptop via USB, why not try the Ethernet connection?Where did he say anything about USB?He didn't say anything about a USB...

Since when is a router not supported by an operating system? It may be the modem that's not supported, if it's connected via USB.

Hi all -

My security sw is always showing that other people are TRYING to LOGON to my wireless network. Since it's my neighbors - for as much as I can tell I'm sure they are not trying to do so maliciously. Trends always lists them for me as not trusted...and I select always block...but the window will still CONTINUE to pop-up every 15 - 30 MINUTES or so with the same information.

Any thoughts or help would be very appreciated.

So i wanted to remove some THINGS today, I had TU 4.9.5 installed. i opened, and it wanted some kind of registration KEY. *censored*?, so I proceed to Martau.com to re-download it, and i see that its no longer free..WHAT!!!?? but then i see that version 5 is out, nice!.

Save the script with a vbs extension and run from a command prompt as cscript scriptname.vbs

My sound suddenly disappeared and after the usual tests and a couple of days thinking I downloaded the appropriate device DRIVER. This did not work, so I decided to delete Realtek AC97 and re-install I know!! I am reasonably able but not technical at all and thought I could just re-install and the problem would be solved. It didn't work like that, I cannot find anyway to install the sound system only the driver Whilst there is probably no hope for me, is there any hope for my computer. No good, also in my efforts it has said I do not have SndVol32.exe installed. I am completely lost here, because it was working fine one moment and nothing the next for no known reason. Anyone know what is happening, please?You'll have to go int Add/Remove Programs through your Control Panel.

Click Add/Remove Windows Components on the left...then look for multimedia and make sure you have that selected for your computer. If so, click OK and it should install this component of Windows.

Let me know if you're still experiencing issues.There is not a box for multimedia.
I have gone through the troubleshooting and it is telling me that it is working properly. I am so tired, and think I will have to start making TRACKS to bed as I am liable to loose patience and do something else I will regret, making a bad situation worse.

I connected my mobile card (i.e : MMC Mobile Card) using card READER. But when I deleted some item from my memory card that is like some video and images. But by mistake I deleted the default folder (i.e video , sound, other, Images) . So now I am not able to use my memory card. It is showing ? mark on all icon of songs, images, video file, Sound files,.

So please give me SOLUTION how should I remove ? mark from my memory card And if I need again to install any software to RECOVER my memory application. Please inform me from which site should I download. I even formatted my card but still I am not able to solve it. So Please give me some solution.

Right now, we are having to manually calculate the turn-around-time (TAT)for each employee on each project for each set of milestone points and then do an average. Since this report is made to our management every week, it takes one person half a day each week to prep the report. HELP! If I can get the formulas correct, this can be done automatically and pulled at any point in time.

SHEET1
Row for each project
Column A is the name of the employee assigned to the TASK
Column B is the Project Name
Columns C thru X are milestone points for the project where employee enters mm/dd that point is reached
Columns Y thru AZ are fields that record the TAT between the various milestone points

PROBLEM 1 - DEALING WITH BLANK CELLS
On Sheet1
K2, K3, .... is the date task is started
L2, L3, .... is the date task is completed
Y2, Y3, ... is formula to calculate TAT =NETWORKDAYS(K2,L2)

=NETWORKDAYS(K2,L2)
This formula works fine when K2 and L2 both have a date entered. If either cell is blank, I get results like -28347. I need to set up the formula so that if either K2 or L2 is blank, then no result is returned in Y2.

PROBLEM 2 - PIVOT TABLE TO CALCULATE AVERAGE TAT

On Sheet2 in the same workbook, we record the average TAT by employee for COLUMNS Y thru AZ in Sheet1. Right now, we are doing a manual count and keying in the result (you can image the amount of time this takes and the error rate).

I want to set up Sheet2 as follows:
Rows - one row for each employee in Sheet1
Columns - same columns as columns Y thru AZ on Sheet1
Data - Average TAT for each employee

I know that a Pivot Table would work, but am trying to set it up where I can have all of the columns Y thru AZ in Sheet1 represented in a single Pivot table on Sheet2 instead of having to set up a separate pivot table for each column.

If I understand your spreadsheet application correctly, I believe this formula may be a solution for Problem 1. Try this is cell Y2:

I can't answer your question on the Pivot table. I haven't used them much but, if I have a chance later to look at that and feel that I may have come up with something significant, I'll post it here. THANK YOU!!!!!!!!! This did the trick. Since this was the root of the invalid data calculations, it may help solve my pivot table issue. I will let you know.

Can you completely remove and then reinstall Photoshop Elements 6 without having to call the company or email them for a new activation code. The reason I WANT to know is because the organizer will not work on my elements 6. Photoshop Elements won't open in ANYTHING but Edit. Then because most everything you do such as photomail,sharing,making PDF slide shows, email to a mobile phone,etc., takes the organizer to open;these things do not work. The organizer starts to open then stalls and closes. I was checking my pictures in another picture file program(microsoft picture it) when I noticed it had downloaded ICONS from everywhere..Millions of them. I STARTED to delete them then emptied my trash before I realized some programs needed these icons to start the program. I was able to save the second group I deleted but that must have been too late for the Photoshop Elements organizer. Maybe I just don't know enough about Photoshop Elements 6. Is there something I could have done to turn off the organizer.
Here is some information about my computer: It is a Dell. It has a Dimension E 510 Hard drive (capacity 227 GB). I have 51.0GB's of used space and I have 176 GB's of free space. I also have an extra hard drive from Western Digital (500 GB USB 2.00 ) It is the Media Center edition.
