Hi Guys,

A while ago I had to reformat and reinstall XP. Now, a month later, I think it's finally done.

While going through the labors of getting this done, I was advised to use Acronis True Image to replicate the state of my C: drive while it was OK.

I got that software, but it only allows me to clone a HD to another HD, not to a DVD or CD as recommended. I have Acronis Home version 11.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

You'll probably find your signature file is this location: C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft

Substitute your actual Win XP user ACCOUNT name for username in that path to the signature file.
I am having trouble with your instructions.

this is a problem that ive been TRYING to fix for about 7 weeks now (i THINK). I can't download/install any programs. I am using windows XP. I've tryed EVERYTHING that ive read on the same problem and that i can think of but nothing has worked. I dont know what caused this all i know is that i started around late september.

this is what the error message says:
"WIndows Installer service cannot be accessed. This can occur in you are running Windows in safe mode, or if the WIndows Installer is not correctly installed. CONTACT your service provider for assistance."

I'm not sure why this bat file does not complete, unless there is some sort of time out for bat files, where if a command does not complete within a certain amount of time, the bat file just stops.

If I were to choose, I WOULD use AVG because I've had previous experience with it.

As for not-free antivirus PRODUCTS, I have Kaspersky Anti-Virus and it's one of the best I have used.It's a matter of opinion most of the time.
My own choice: free, AVG EVERY time. Paid, Eset Smart Security (security suite) or NOD32 antivirus (just the antivirus part).
I don't usually use antivirus anyway myself though.

I'm GOING to be getting a new computer, and the biggest question that I have is about which processor and version of windows to use. I don't know if it is worth it to move to the 64-bit platform, since I don't know how much software has GONE that WAY and what sorts of problems I will have with all the old stuff. However, I don't want to spend the money on 32-bit stuff (software, processor, etc), and then have to spend it again in a year or two to move to 64-bit cause everything is obsolete. Any thoughts about how widespread 64-bit is and how quickly "standard" programs will make the migration? Thanks!!

Mark Any modern CPU you buy will be 64 bit capable, so you don't need to worry about that.
Most modern hardware also has 64 bit drivers available for it, this can be checked on the MANUFACTURER's website.
Most 32 bit software works fine on 64 bit operating systems too.
32 bit operating systems will not become obsolete for a while yet.

In the end the decisions is yours, and there are advantages and disadvantages of going either way.
However, I think whichever you decide, you won't regret it any time soon and wish you'd CHOSEN the opposite.

this has been GOING on for months. I was able to make a movie and save it 1 time but now i cant save anything.
the error message says something like "windows movie maker cant save to the specified location. CHECK if there is enough disc space, the location is still available, or the files are still available."
I Tried uninstalling it and REINSTALLING but the program files from the first installation wont all delete and now windows installer wont work (read my other post please). I tried everything i can think of but nothing worked and i could find help on any other site so please help me!!!!

The problem is often the result of:

* Insufficient computer memory for the complexity of your project, combined with other tasks your computer is doing as it renders the movie.

* Using SOURCE files that don't work with Movie Maker, or are corrupt.

Well, I didn't really think this was the right place to post a question, your right. I thank you for the reply. I have gone to the links you suggested and it didn't help me much. Have you got the Frontpage CD?This is really winding up being confusing for me. I was just GOING into the files. Everytime I saw the _VTI_CNF file, I deleted it. It is everywhere! EVEN in my pictures files! So, now when I go to FP and try to edit I get "413(request entity too large). Request entity too largethe requested resource/~(my domain name) /_VTI_bin/_VTI_AUT/Author.EXE does not allow request data with POST requests or the amount of data provided in there. Request exceeds the capacity limit." So, I thought I would go into my website and start resizing the pictures, they are huge!. It still came up with the same thing. I have a mess as far as what I am trying to edit on the website. Not worried though cause when it is FIXED I can always fix that issue....I think! I just found out also that the domain registrar NEEDED an update for my billing information. I updated and have not checked to see if that was the issue...I don't think so though. Now that I have gone into my computer and messed around with "stuff" I'm getting all sorts of warnings and the blue screen of death and notices that windows defender is stopped and other things too. I'm just so frustrated with this. If you can help me then great! If what you have read is sounding like I just need to take it in somewhere and let them "fix it" please tell me so. how it started

i was bored then i remembered i had wolfinstine 3d on my computer so i started it up
then i was playing and i CHANGED my SETTINGS so that the run key WOULD be on shift
so i was playing for about 2 minus when i accidentally PRESSED shift 5 times
so this enabled sticky keys!!

At the Bottum Left HAND Side of the SCREEN is the Start Menu and on it is all shortcuts for diferant Programs.

Now if I want to Delete a shortcut I know I can just Right Click on it and Click Delete.

But I remember in Win 98 you could do it that way and also you could GO into a WINDOW that would GIVE you a List oif Start Menu shortcuts and you could take it out of there.

I have a Dell Inspiron running Vista Ultimate, I do a lot of photography and I use Ulead PhotoImpact, Ulead Movie Factory 5 and Ulead Video Studio 10. None of these work properly on Vista. I have tried DOWNLOADING patches from the website but when I do I get the message “Movie Factory 5 not found on your computer” (this APPLIES to the other programs as well). If I OPEN the program and then try to download the patch I get the message “Movie Factory 5 is running on your computer please close the program first” when I do this I get the first message again.
I have tried to CONTACT customer support and eventually got a reference “Movie Factory 5 on Vista [INCIDENT: 081103-000015]” thinking I was getting somewhere I waited for a response it was : “We are unable to verify the registration status of the software you are inquiring with as it is needed to provide support to your concern” all of the products are registered and I had logged in with the password supplied by Ulead. I have tried to reply to them but it is a no-reply address.
I am fed up with Ulead can anyone help me pleeeeease.

i have an extremely bad problem with directX... here's how it started....
(just look at the bottom for the point of what I'm tyring to say)

once upon a time there was a kid that was really bored and wanted to play a video game called quake 2. he asked his mom if he could install it and she said "yes". so the kid put the disk in the computer, but the disk had an error in it that when he put it in it went to a directX 6.0 install. so the kid clicked install on the directX and it said directX has successfully installed. but he did not realise that he had just downgraded his dirextX 10 or 9 to 6.0. so he tried to install quake but his CD driver was way too fast so he could not install it. the next morning he wore up and ate Cheerios and then he went up to his computer and clicked on warcraft3 and after like 40 secants it would not launch and just froze. so then he redid that like 4 times then a window pooped up and said "warcraft 3 was unable to initialise directX. please ensure that you have directX8.1 or newer installed."so then that idiot looked for warcraft 3 so he could reinstall his driver to 8.1 but he could not find it because his parents moved it. so he went on download.com and got directX9.0 and installed on his computer. but it still would not work. then 2 WEEKS later he came back from halloween after trickortreating with his Friend and remembered that his Friend had warcraft3 so he barrowed it from his Friend and when he went home he tried REINSTALLING 8.1 but it said you already have directX 8.1 or newer installed. he was f**ed.

to make the long story short(i need to do that because my teacher was hammering me for a late assignment about a bad problem) i need hemp to make my games path to my directX9.0 or whatever because that's a bad problem for me.

I think the whole problem stemmed from eating cheerios. everybody knows that cheerios cause directX problems. You should try switching to corn flakes. Not frosted flakes, mind you, too much sugar, windows already has enough candy coating, you see.


But on to your problem.


uninstall and reinstall warcraft. I couldn't be bothered to wade through the trivial personal STUFF to see if you mention doing so somewhere between eating cheerios and trick or treating, so If you have tried that I apologize.

it said i have directX9.0c but when i was Turing back to my browser i ACCIDENTALLY clicked on wc3 and it fixed the problem perfectly.

The problem is so rare that it hasn't been reported to general mills, so they can't issue a patch for their cheerios. It's a sad state of affairs. Perhaps an incompatibility with the milk, a bowl retainment error- who knows? in test situations,using a six slice toaster while pondering how cheerios cause directX problems made many subject break into convulsions or start uttering quotes from cancelled 80's sitcoms.

I was WONDERING if any knew of any SOFTWARE that will

1.) change ALL folder icons to a custom ICON
2.) New folders use the custom Icon, rather than the default yellow one.

I know atleast one app like this exists, because I had used it before I reformatted.
Unfortunatley, I forgot the name.

All morning I have been searching, but most of the software I have come up with only change a single Icon at a time, and new folders use the default yellow icon, not the custom one.

PS- It is not window blinds. I hate window blinds, the software I had used before was 3rd party, and relatively unknown.

I am using adobe acrobat 7.0 Standard and am having trouble creating pdf documents. I get the error MESSAGE "Missing PDFMaker files. Do you want to run the installer in repair mode?". I have tried this, and also uninstalled and reinstalled but nothing seems to WORK. I have noticed that I can create a pdf with a word document but not from any other program. I run Windows XP, and use MS Office 2003, I have recently installed MS Publisher 2007 and can't create a pdf with a .pub file either.

If your PDF creation needs are mainly to CONVERT Word documents and other MS Office files (Excel, Publisher, etc.) to PDF, you COULD install a freeware PDF converter such as PrimoPDF. Once installed, PrimoPDF appears as a printer in your computer and you select it to "PRINT" to a PDF document.

So, what exactly can I do with a 4.7 GB DVD+R Blank Disc?

To do it, you need burning program. Vista comes with video burning program built in. In other Windows version, you'll need standalone burning program like Nero, or Roxio.So what if I had a 700 MB AVI movies?It'll fit.The 4.7 DVD disk will store either data - avi, wmv vid files etc as well as other data but also depending on your software options, iso images as well as actual DVD video.

If 700 Mb avi then it's simply a case of burning that - or even 6 of same size!

I invested recently in NTI Media maker 8 - which tho not free does do about everything you might want with burning any disk media.Let's clarify a LITTLE...
4.7 GB DVD will:
1. accommodate 6+ movies (700MB) STORED as data.
2. If you want to play a DVD in standalone DVD player, the movie file has to be burned. Burning process expands file size. 4.7GB DVD accommodates about 120 min movie. 700MB movie is about 90 mins long, so burned DVD will hold 1 1/2 of AVERAGE length movie. Since you don't want to watch half of a movie, DVD is practically good for burning ONE movie.

I have an excel sheet saved as .CSV. COLUMN A has a code number that does not change for all of the 1000+ entries. Column B has last name first name. Column C has unique id numbers for the names.

I an trying to import the names and id numbers into another program but the problem is that it is looking for separate entries for first and last names. I can not change what it is looking for.

Is there a formula that will see the first word in Column B and move everything after it into a new column? If not move, then I am pretty sure that it would work if it was just copied. I can insert a new column so that C becomes D.

You create a function and use it to create new entries in new cells. The LANGUAGE can do strings as well as numbers. Is that any help at all? You should be able to use the Text to Columns function. With reference to Excel 2003, select column B, then, on the menu, select Data, Text to Columns, and proceed through the screens. THANKS Soybean, that is exactly what I was looking for. Ok, is there a server version of OFFICE 2007? If not, can the program be loaded on a server and accessed over a small business network? Do licenses have to be bought to cover each workstation? The client is an veterinarian and there are 8 workstations, buying copies for each is a bit much at this time.

But, I could be wrong but I believe you'd still need to install some part of Office on each workstation. Have you inquired about VOLUME license pricing? I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop running with Windows Vista home basic. I don't know what happened but when I go to my documents folder, in Microsoft Word version 2007, I can open any document however after I exit from the document the document folder is frozen and I have to start the task manager to get out of the folder and back to my destop. It ALSO occurs when I open the document folder and try and copy a document to paste elsweheres. I right click the document and it freezes not allowing me to either copy or exit. There is a checkmark to the right of the document but all is frozen.

I am using OUTLOOK 2002. In any random email message, if I click on a hyperlink to take me to an internet address, my Netscape browser is invoked. I would rather have MS Explorer invoked and have searched high & wide for the Outlook properties to change this without SUCCESS. I have changed all the internet-type file extentions in WinME control to invoke Explorer but this didn't affect how Outlook spawns a webpage from the message link. What should I try next?

WinME is laid out a bit different than WinXP but it still functions the same. It turns out I needed to reset the Hypertext Transfer Protocol. Now Explorer invokes with any IMBEDDED web address in my email messages. Who woulda thunk it?

I have a Windows Server 2003 exchange server upon which I have set up a new mailbox. When I try to open the mailbox through outlook 2000 I get the following error messages: -

1) on Outlook 2000 under Windows 2000 Professional, Outlook opens part way and, before OPENING the mailbox, it says "Unable to open your default e-mails folder. You do not have permission to LOG on."

2) on Outlook 2000 under xp professional, outlook doesn't get a chance to open any windows before it says "Unable to open your default e-mail folder. You do not have permission to log on".

I've tried deleting the mailbox and recreating it, but that does nothing to ALLEVIATE the problem.

This was another one of those kickself problems. I had my eureka moment this morning soon after I posted the question. Although I had copied the user id in Active Directory and so all of the SETTINGS should have been the same as the userid I had copied from, the new userid had no mailbox permission for itself. So, the new userid was not permitted to pick up the new mailbox.

I corrected this oversight and the thing now works... Hooray!

As to why the same version of Outlook 2000 got to a different error message when run under different operating systems, I haven't a clue. But it works now on both platforms. So that's OK by me!

Any software that automatically backups the data online.I don't think there is any software that does this.

I have not tried any of them, myself.

I have only a few days to go with F-Secure. I've never really liked them that much, but my "computer GUY" is all in love with it and practically makes you feel guilty if you are not using it. I'm not that much of a computer genius (actually I'm computer stupid) and I'd appreciate any input in what is good out there to use. It's so easy to get confused when each one you look at TELLS you they are the best there is. Even reviews don't help as no two are ever mentioned.

Everyone settles into a security package for their pc and as long as the user is happy with it very few change.

I use AVG ver 8. free version with Zone Alarm free version and SpywareBlaster. Not had an intrusion in years. Others will use Avast with Comodo (both free), the combinations are MANY. The Free part of the equations is, of course, a great attraction. There's a list of free firewalls here, a review of free anti-virus programs is available here. Just noticed that AVG does not fare well in comparison but I'll stick with it..

Others will praise the Norton suite of programs, CH USERS seem to be in general agreement that it causes more problems than it cures. See this discussion.

It's a personal choice thing.. Mebbe you won't want to upset your computer guy, selling is how he makes a living..

I've personally always been a fan of Avast, www.avast.com , it requires a free registration, but lasts 14 months, and once that time is up, you just register again.

For FireWall, I see no reason to get another firewall when you have Windows Firewall. Contrary to popular belief, Windows FireWall is really quite secure, and Windows will update it for you. Its BUILT in to the Operating System, so you shouldn't worry about integration or performance loss.
You can certainly use another FireWall program if you dont like Windows Firewall.

(Then again, I also have a very good and secure router that works like a miracle as a firewall. I almost suggest anyone to get a router along with using Windows Firewall, since, thats really the best you can get, IMO)

I have been having troubl with frostwire. It opens the splash screen and then freezes for a while until a message pops up saying that frostwire cant connect to the internet becasue of a firewall blocking it. I have Avira AV and COMODO firewall.... PLEASE help.Look for the application setting in Comodo that's blocking Frostwire. I had NET Nanny last year and is up for renewal but I wasn't real happy with it and it was a hassle to completely remove from my system. Okay Lol..It's the 3rd time I'm typing this.

A couple of weeks ago I installed MS OFFICE 2007 on my laptop (Windows XP) and it was working fine up until a few days ago. Now, whenever I click on a Word file, the yellow box/square shows up showing that Word is opening and it disappears and then the SEND ERROR REPORT window shows up. Sometimes it even asks me if I want to open Word in safe mode and after I click YES it tries installing something, and then it says INSTALLER PERMENANTLY TERMINATED. I have a couple of screen shots if anybody is interested. I'm afraid these aren't the ones I'm talking about but I'm hoping it helps.

I've got a lot of assignments to do and saldy I left them all for Sunday and it's Sunday 3am right now. Could re-installing or reparing Office 2007 help? Does Office 2007 work proerly with Windows XP? Please help, I've got a lof assignments to do. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

(Oh and I know it's not a virus because Norton Antivirus detected nothing and I just re-installed Windows a month ago. I have nothing on my computer except for VLC Media Player, MSN, iTunes and some other programs...Everything's clean/safe. I don't even use Limewire anymore)

My FIRST post so please forgive me if it is in the wrong category. I am getting an i/o error when using img burn, it has only worked once in 6 attempts. I went out and paid more for Sony discs thinking it may be the media i was using, i also uninstalled IMG and re-installed it and now i am lost of what to do next? Works at my Office but not here at home. I added other ACCOUNTS and they will not connect either. the error message is below. I also tried logging into hotmail directly from hotmail.com and it works just not from live Mail. Any ideas guys? thanks - JT

1. Check that your clock is adjusted PROPERLY. (SOUNDS SILLY I know but I once found mine on the wrong year)
2. Try deleting the account (restart WLMail) and adding it back.

5. Try logging in and out several times repeatedly.

If that don't work, I don't know what else to do.

i have a friend who, is having trouble uninstalling zone labs security form his computer he must have deleted the uninstaller ( doh) it does not show up in add / remove progs, amd has looked for the uninstaller in the releveant folders,, there seems to be 1 file in the reg which will not DELETE he has full permissions but it just will not delete even in safe mode he has also deleted some of the folders in the reg also but yet it still works
he can not restore his computer, hmm i am quite CONFUSED as to what to advise him ?? as i do not know what state his files are in as i can not get to him was wondering if anybody may know of what he can do

Though I've never used it myself...it has been GIVEN good reviews and is an alternative to removing programs other than the standard Windows interface.

Best of all...it's FREE!Another thing to try would be to reinstall the program first, then try uninstalling again.

I am not having any problems with my computer or System Memory I just needed some help understanding XMS Memory in the msconfig file and how it worked.

In the msconfig.sys file there was a line that said
device=c:\dos\himem.sys

When ever I READ about what this is for it says....THIS LINE IS REQUIRED TO ACCESS EXTENDED MEMORY.

So would I be right in thinking that himem.sys is the XMS Driver??

and onother line in the msconfig.sys file says
device=c:\dos\emm386.exe

And when I read about this line it says.....THIS LINE INSTALLS THE DOS MEMORY MANAGER.

So if emm386.exe is a memory manager then what is himem.sys??


HIMEM is an extended-memory manager--a program that coordinates the use of
the computer's extended memory, including the high memory area (HMA), so
that no two applications or device drivers use the same memory at the same
time.

EMM386.EXE provides access to the upper memory area and USES extended memory to simulate expanded memory. This device driver must be loaded by a command in your CONFIG.SYS file and can be used only on computers with an 80386 or higher processor.

EMM386 uses extended memory to simulate expanded memory for very old programs that
can use expanded memory. EMM386 also makes it possible to load programs and
device drivers into upper memory blocks (UMBs).


So himem.sys is the XMS Memory Manager and it controles the Extended MERY and the High Memory Area WITCH is the 64 kB right after the first Meg RIGHT???

And emm386.exe Controles the UMB Area and if another program NEEDS Expanded Memory it can Turn Extended Memory into Expanded Memory RIGHT???

And am I right that himem.sys and emm386 are both XMS Drivers??
And you need both himem.sys and emm386.exe to run XMS???

I have been using Secunia PSI and love it, but the other day when I opened it I NOTICED there was a new version so I DOWNLOADED it and during installation of the new version (RC2), the old version (RC1) was uninstalled. Now the new version will not communicate with the Secunia update site (or whatever all it does).
When I open the program I see the screen SHOWN in the 1st screen shot here:

To clean up HTML or XHTML that was not generated by Microsoft Word, see Cleaning up your code.

To clean up Word HTML:

1. In Microsoft Word, save your document as an HTML file.

Dreamweaver opens the file and then automatically opens the Clean Up Word HTML dialog box.

• Choose File > Open and select a file to open.

Have DOWNLOADED a video from YouTube. Can I record this to a disc ? ,, Am running Windows XP Pro, and have Roxio Media creator 8 available.It DEPENDS on what you have downloaded...and what files your media player supports.

The only other thing you may want to check is if your media player supports .flv files. If it does, you can simply copy that file to the appropriate location.You could convert the video to another FORMAT burn on a CD/DVD to play on a DVD player or PC. When I installed my external wireless NETWORK adapter, it created a DLL file that prevents me from logging in with basic XP login.


I INSTEAD have to use the classic windows 95/98 Username/password login.

I found an entry in the registry editor with reference to the file that is messing with the login.

If I delete the "Binary Data", Would this enable me to delete the DLL? Would it automatically delete it? Or would it do nothing?FIRST I wouldn't use the regisrty to make changes to the login. Also I wouldn't suggest deleting a DLL to fix your problem.

I installed the external adapter. After a while the login/shutdown changed itself to the conventional 95/98 settings

Whe I go to user account and try to modify how users login and out, it SAY that so & so file is preventing any changes from being made. please check so & so file.
