Solve : Can not load Microsoft application on Vista?

Answer»

PATIO: Office 2K was uninstalled using the "Programs and features" utility on the control panel. However, I was able to reinstall Office 2K recently. I needed to use Excel and Word.
What does "sfc /scannow" do? I do not have a Vista CD. It was loaded onto a partition of the hard drive at the factory. I haven't tried using it.

I have heard recently that Vista has a new SP update. Is that true? jim.mar If old for you is sp2 then yes there is a sp3. truenorthTruenorth: Sorry, I didn't make myself very clear. I didn't know that there were any SP's released for Vista. Gotta do some more searchiing. Thanks for the info, JIMjim.mar a correction is in order. there have been pior "updates"to Vista however there is only SP1 (release date in April) Here is the link to it. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windowsvista/bb738089.aspx. truenorthDid you try System Restore?Truenorth: I went to that link and discovered the following message;Microsoft strongly recommends using Windows Update to download and install Windows Vista SP1 on single PCs:, which is well and good, however, when my machine downloaded the latest update, it was unable to install it just as it has been unable to install anything else. One exception, I was able to reinstall Office 2000 the other day. Go figure. So I am hesitant to try to down load SP 1 and install it.

Broni: Yes, I have tried system restore three times, each to a later date. But I don't know when my rouble developed.

Thanks for all of your efforts guys. Don't give up on me, JIMYou tried to install NET 3.5, but....did you uninstall all NET versions, first?BRONI: I have never been able to locate any NET Frame in the machine BUT, the Belarc Advisor Computer Profile Summary shows that there is a Microsoft® .NET Framework Version 2.0.50727.312 somewhere. I can not locate it using "SEARCH" or "Windows Explorer". Nor does it show up in "Programs and Features" under Control Panel.
JIMCheck here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/908077
If the above doesn't work, use this: http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2006/05/30/611355.aspxBRONI: The first item seems to be directed at all of the Miscrosoft OS except Vista. So I tried to use the second option. It starts off right away with the following statement;
The updated version of the cleanup tool CONTAINS options to clean up the .NET Framework 1.0, 1.1, 2.0, 3.0 and 3.5 separately and all versions simultaneously in a single step. The cleanup tool contains logic so that if it is run on an OS version that includes the .NET Framework as an OS component, it will not offer the option to clean it up. This means that running the cleanup tool on Windows XP Media Center Edition or Tablet PC Edition will not offer the option to clean up the .NET Framework 1.0, running it on Windows Server 2003 will not offer the option to clean up the .NET Framework 1.1 0.and running it on Windows Vista will not offer the option to clean up the .NET Framework 2.0 or the .NET Framework 3.0...... Does that mean that it will not work on Vista??
First link will work exactly the same with Vista, so go ahead with it.Well guys, I will try to bring you up to date. Before I resorted to "Vista Recovery" on my hard drive, I decided to download and install SP-1. However, it would not install. Microsoft has a web site and a phone no.for SP-1 install problems, which i phoned. That connected me with a person in India who tried to help me out. I am 80 years old and my hearing is not as it was 40 years ago. I do not hear a lot of words correctly even when spoken in English with no accent. A conversation with an East Indian person is extremely difficult. However, after 4 phone calls i finally got connected wiht a person who took over my "Desk top", manipulated the machine for a few minutes then told me I had "corrupted system files". He advised me to contact HP and demand an "In Place Upgrade DVD". So I called HP, got another person in India, and was informed that they did not give out those DVD's. It would cost me $150.00. I suppose I over reacted to that but I refused and hung up. I will next try to use the "Vista Recovery" on the hard drive. I'm not sure how but eeeehhhh.
I am going up into the mountains for a couple of weeks so I will not be on line for a while. I want to thank you guys, especially you, BRONI for you continued efforts to help. No doubt, we will exchange notes again later, GOD BLESS, JIM
jim.mar, I have been doing extensive reading up on Vista (even though i do not have it installed on anything (yet) ) in order to see if i can get any kind of a clue as to what is happening to your computer.
1st. Which of the 3 commercially available versions of Vista do you have installed?
2ND -i don't see why endeavoring to install those 2 gratuities that you received from Bill& company should be such a problem unless the version of Vista you have (or other hardware/software components are insufficient). But on this issue i would try (avoiding India if you can) to demand of Microsoft that given that they have provided you with these items in recognition for a service you provided to them. And that as a result of your efforts to use them you have encountered grief. Tell them you would prefer to be able to install and use the 2 gifts they sent you--failing that you expect them (not HP or ANYONE else) to make you whole again back to where you were (which primarily would involve your ability to re install your office 2000 suite you had).
3rd--yes the "in place upgrade DVD is primarily used for advancing your Vista version to a higher level version and it does cost money. Some companies and HP appears to one of them has blocked the upgrade function on their DVD,s. Apparently Microsoft intended that all 3 version were to be provided on 2 disks (one 32 bit and one 64 bit) and you could use the disks to upgrade at any time (provided you payed for and received a valid user key-i guess from microsoft but maybe also the computer mfg.) However as i read many articles on that method of upgrade i saw many people having problems with that route. So before you go that route be carefull. I would have thought that a restore should solve your "corruption " problems. good luck, truenorthtruenorth: Thank you. you have given me something to think about. I know just the person at MS to contact. However, it will have to WAIT until I get back to civilization. I can't understand why HP would block the upgrade function. Well, thanks again. I really appriciate your efforts. See ya later, GOD BLESS, JIM

Solve : Need help with Norton Internet Security 2005?

Answer»

You guys are my last hope. I literally have spent the last 10 hours trying to figure this out and have had no success. I am at my wits end.

O.k., I am running Windows 98SE on a Pentium III 933MHz machine. Up until Wednesday I was using Norton Internet Security and all was running fine. But Thursday when I got on my computer Norton was screwed up. I don't know why - a virus scan run the night before showed nothing. I ended up having to re-install the program. And this is where my problems began. While the re-install was running I received an error message stating "Configuration Failed". I clicked the help link provided and followed the steps (It suggested editing the registry and removing two values: Audit and AuditInProgress) I re-started my computer and re-tried the installation but got the same same "Configuration Failed" message.

I ran LiveUpdate and all the components are up to date, however I cannot access secure web sites. If an address starts with 'https' then it's a no-go. (I'm currently using Firefox 2 as a browser, though I've tried IE6 as well with the EXACT same results.) This means I cannot sign in to any web-based e-mail, FaceBook, my Amazon account - the list GOES on. I can't even send a help REQUEST through the Symantec website as it's on a secure server which I can't access.

I've since run both a spy-ware scan (Spybot Search & Destroy) and several virus scans (with Norton) and every thing is showing up clear.

I would really appreciate any help you could provide me about this situation. It's so frustrating and I'm at a total loss as to how to fix this. Thank you.Welcome to the CH forums.

Probably the best advice you'll get on this forum is to uninstall Norton everything and install different antivirus and firewall programs. The Free VERSIONS of these (such as AVG and Zone Alarm) are available for download. Check that the version you select is still supporting Win 98se.

However, if you are really STUCK with Norton then this might be of some help.

Good luck

Solve : Wanting to dictate story to a Word document using microphone?

Answer»

Do I need special SOFTWARE in order to "write" a book? I am wanting to record a family story w/o having to type it all. I am hoping to just speak into a microphone and have it appear on page. Any suggestions as to a GOOD program or way to do this? ThanksThough I've never USED any of the software...I REALLY can't recommend any to you. However, you may find the following interesting: Speech to Text

Or you can wait for someone else to come along to recommend something for you.I think what you want is Voice Recognition. I have one. ESpeaking
http://www.e-speaking.com/

Dictation mode is not very accurate....actually not very accurate at all.
To get the best out of it, you need to train your voice with program. This is just something I found at microsoft, http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/expert/moskowitz_02september23.mspx.

Microsoft developed a voice recognition software a while ago that is suppose to be good, but during a conference presentation it had major flaws. I'm not sure with the exact name but its from Microsoft. Give it a shot.spardawg, Start here and then decide. http://www.google.ca/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1T4GZHZ_enCA241CA241&q=voice+recognition+software truenorth

Solve : desktop spell checker?

Answer»

A few years ago before my husband passed away he had a neat spell checker he could easily ACCESS WITHOUT being in Word. If he was writing an email and making a journal page and he wasn't sure of the correct spelling, he could just click SOMETHING and the checker appeared on whatever he was doing. He would put in the word he wasn't sure about and the checker would offer him the correct spellings. His computer is gone now and I have no idea where to get this. It was a free download and I don't even know what is was called. This would be very beneficial to me since I do a lot of writing that is not in word and then I have to go to word and type in the word and use it's spell checker. If anyone out there can help me I would greatly appreciate it. Plus my grandchildren could make use of it also. THANKS for info. you can provide.

Solve : Is GoogleUpdate.exe a safe program??

Answer»

There's supposed to be a browser plugin for Google Earth that apparently requires GoogleUpdate.exe to be installed. My firewall is bringing up all these concerns about it, so I'm just kind of wondering if it's safe.I've never had a safety/security problem with anything Google's programs do.I too installed the Google Earth plugin and after that GoogleUpdate.exe appeared in my list of running processes. It is "safe" but whether it is kind to your system is another question. When I ran the Google Earth full program it used to send my CPU USAGE to 100% and everything else ran more slowly (3.0 GHz P4 Prescott & 1 GB RAM)

I've never had a safety/security problem with anything Google's programs do.

Well, I'm questioning it because I wasn't sure if I was downloading it from a legitimate site or not. Then when the firewall began sending up all these red flags, it made me wonder EVEN more.Quote from: Dias de verano on May 31, 2008, 02:09:15 PM

So only when you were using Google Earth did it take the CPU usage up to 100%? Or does it hog CPU and memory usage even when the program isn't open? Is there an online version of Google Earth so I don't even need to put anything on my PC?you could give google maps a go Quote from: davidoc on May 31, 2008, 04:29:32 PM
you could give google maps a go

That is exactly what I did. There is also Windows Live LOCAL, which is Microsoft's similar thing.

Solve : Word save failure?

Answer»

Word now comes up with an error message when I try to save a particular .doc that I am working on. The message says that the .doc cannot be saved and suggests it may be because the disk is full (not so) and I should stop other programs (the problem is still there when nothing else is running). The problem is still there when I reboot. The proble is still there when I try 'save as' with a different name. I also get the message that Autorecovery has been DELAYED for that .docClick on first link in my signature.Broni
I expect that you are referring to the fact that I did not give details of my system. It is windows 98SE and Word 2000.The error message was:
Microsoft Word
The disk is full or too many files are open
(C:\.................doc)

I tried again after a reboot. I was able to 'save' the file concerned. Then I 'cut' a chart that had been copied from Excel. The error message then came up again and the 'save' failed. I was directed to the note in NOTEPAD copied below. It seems the problem originated with cutting the chart.

Probably, it doesn't matter, but how big is your hard drive, and how much free space is left?
Most likely, there are other reasons for your problem.
As for Word:
Quote
This error message indicates the embedding information for some of the graphics in your Microsoft Word document has been corrupted.
More info here: http://www.dessci.com/en/support/mathtype/tsn/TSN64.htm
As for Excel, your error indicates some invalid links included in the file. More info here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/224041Problem solved, thanks to Broni. As advised in Method 1, I saved as in Rich Text format with a new name , closed, then opened, and saved as a Word Document with a new name. The only problem is that I was unable to delete or rename the corrupted file. I got an access denied message when I tried to do this.I'm glad, it worked
As for deleting stubborn file, get MoveOnBoot: http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Boot-Manager-Disk/MoveOnBoot.shtml
It'll allow you to delete file upon reboot.

Solve : to convert media file format?

Answer»

can u assist me to convert my music files from *.php format to windows media player format.php format? Right Click the .php file, go to Properties.
How big is that file?
How did you get it?there are many files like some are 4.6mbs n i downloaded from a music website What happens when you double click it?
Copy one of the files (to BACK it up) and change one of the copies so that instead of being file.php, you edit the filetype by making it file.wma
See what happens when you do that.actually through properties it opens with winamp but i still cant change the file types plz help me write me the stepsAll righty then:

First, go to a folder and click Tools --> Folder Options

A new window should POP up. Click the View tab and then look for a check box saying 'Hide extensions for known file types'

Uncheck that and press OK.
Now go to your backed up .php file, right click, and click Rename.

Note: your icon for the .php file may look different.
Rename the '.php' at the end to '.wma'. Press Enter.

It should look like this:

Now see what happens when you double click the file.Dudeoxide,Will "renaming it really allow access as if it were a .wma file?Would not a media file conversion program be necessary to actually "convert" the file to another format as in this case .wma? truenorthMy question is: since when .php file is a media file?
According to: http://filext.com/file-extension/php
.php may be:
Picture It! Publishing Project File
PhotoParade Slideshow
Creatacard Quick Prints Project
PHP ScriptI based my reply on the possibility that it wasn't saved properly or the filetype got mixed up. It's possible Ankita tried to rip music off the site but ripped the wrong file.

BTW, congrats on 11000, Broni If you can hear the sounds/music on your computer's speakers, then you might be able to record them to wav format:

Go to Start > Run > type in sndvol32 /r. If you cannot see a slider labeled "Wave Out Mix or Stereo Mix", go to Options > Properties and scroll through the list to find and click "Wave Out Mix" or "Stereo Mix", then click OK. Adjust the slider to the desired volume and click "Select" by Wave Out Mix - Then...

Go to Start > Run > type in sndrec32. Click the record button (button with the round icon) and then (QUICKLY) click/play the sound in the program to record (have to get timing right). Stop the recording and then file - save (wav format) to a folder.

Then if you WANT you can convert the wav file to other formats, e.g. mp3. A simple program is amber audio converter.

Many people would suggest the free Audacity for recording and editing (e.g. amplifying music, reverb, etc) if you want...Quote

BTW, congrats on 11000, Broni
Thank you, my friend. My post number looks on a hex side right now

Solve : Excel Autosum Incorrect?

Answer»

I'm running Excel 2007 on a Vista machine. When I try to AUTOSUM just two figures (which were the answers of multiplications) it is incorrect. Viz:
9.29
11.45
Autosum says 20.75!
I know the original figure of
62.38 had been rounded up and then multiplied by 7 and divided by 47 to get 9.29
I suspect it might have something to do with the rounding up but can't find how to correct this error!
HELP please!Excel 2007 has a known bug. Whether or not it's been addressed in a RECENT UPDATE from Office Update...well...that's another story.

Anyway, you can work around this problem, by using the CELL format function, specifically..."numbers"...and try playing with the number of decimal places to see if this doesn't get the desired result you're looking for.

Solve : Outlook 2003 query?

Answer»

G'day all,
I receive and send a lot of E-mails. I want to get rid of the contact details in the forwarded mails that I send.
While I have many friends, some of them do not know each other.
If I forward an E-mail, they are able to see the details of all the recipients by running the mouse over the recipient
in the "TO" list. It shows a grey circle and by CLICKING on this circle, the details show.

Is there a way to stop this happening? If so could you advise me of the step by step process of carrying this out?
I am an older bloke, and some of these things are quite foriegn to me.

Thank you in advance for your help in this mater.

Rodney Jackson
Hello Rodney.

Good to see a VK3 on the CH forums. I don't have an answer to your query as I'm not familiar with Outlook but isn't there a BCC facility in Outlook which hides the recipient list?

Someone with more experience than I have will be ALONG SHORTLY to assist you.

Good luck - 73's - meet you one day at the bottom end of the bands.

V.Another option would be to Copy and Paste just the body of the message into a new e-mail...Another option is to remove those former recipient addresses from the body of the message you are forwarding. Here's how:

Click on Forward to open the message in a Forward screen. Then, highlight the list of previous recipients by dragging your mouse over them while holding the left mouse button down. Then, hit the Delete key. G'day again blokes,
Yes, the BCC does the job. However I click on the people who I want to receive the mail and "Bingo" it GOES into the send to line. There are usually too many people to type them in manually.
Is there a way to have them go into the Bcc line automatically?

The other point is, I do delete the top of all messages to remove the original SENDERS, but the problem lies when I send the e-mail to others. Although the contacts show as only a first name, if you were to move the mouse over any of those names listed in the message sent to, there is a grey blob appears beside them.
By clicking on that blob, the full details of that person become visible.

Any further help would be greatly appreciated.

Solve : Outlook 2007 copy appts.?

Answer»

Does anyone know if it is POSSIBLE to COPY a calendar appointment in Outlook 2007? I am familiar with recurring appointments, but I'd like to be able to copy the same appointment(s) that are not on a regular schedule. I believe in 2003 I could drag and DROP (with shift or control or something like that), but with this new version I am stumped! Thanks for your ideas.

Solve : Word 2003 - mail merge with text form fields?

Answer»

Hi,

I have a letter that contains several TEXT form fields. This document also has mail merge fields in the header.

I NEED to perform a mail merge to insert ADDRESSES in the header, but I need to KEEP the text that is in the text form fields (it PROVIDES a guide for what the user needs to put in that field). However, when I perform a merge, that form text disappears. If I protect the document, I can't perform a mail merge.

The final product will be a series of form letters to be used by several locations of our office. Each location will get a letter with their address in the header, and then they need to be able to fill in those form fields in order to send this letter to a customer. I would rather not have to manually enter the address for each location into the header. I thought a mail merge would save time... instead I'm tearing my hair out trying to make it work.

Help?

I'm using Word 2003 and WINDOWS XP.

Solve : Movie maker for dvd player?

Answer» HI guys,

i jsut wanted to know if anyone know a good software to USE to make a MOVIE that works on DVD. I had some digital photos that i made a slideshow with, with music and transitions and effects and everything it LOOKED great i was giving it as a present. i wrote it onto the CD but then it wouldnt play on my DVD i was using the windows movie maker program thats already on my computer. I use windows XP IE7
SP2. Can anyone tell me of a good one that can let me play the cd on my dvd.

Thanks and much appreciated. You want to BURN those movies to DVD rather, then CD.what format is the slideshow being published as?its being saved as MSWMM format, i have downloaded a program called Wondershare Video to DVD, but it doesnt recognise the MSWMM format. It also doesnt have the good affects like Movie maker does. Please help.A .MSWMM file is a Windows Movie Maker project file.

In Windows Movie Maker, go to File --> Export. The project file, when saved is in the wmv format (windows media video). Then use a free converter such as internet video converter or "super" to convert to dvd format...

For movie editing you might want to try the free video spin, which is supposedly a bit better than movie maker. Short review of video spin here at digital inspiration...

Solve : Having trouble extracting an ISO file to a hard drive...?

Answer»

My problem is that I've been trying to extract an iso file (the Mac OSX operating system) on to a hard drive because it is to big to burn on a cd or regular dvd. It gives me an error (I've tried multiple file extracting programs) and tells me that it cannot extract the iso because either the files are already there (they aren't, I've even formatted the disk) or the disk is being used... etc. How do I get it to extract??

Thanks,

HarlanIf you're working with an ISO and not an actual disc, we have to assume you don't have a legitimate copy of the Mac OS X software. We cannot help you with this. There are countless legitimate reasons to access an ISO file, and ultimately you are responsible for your own actions, so let's assume you are not violating a license.

On Linux, this would be fairly simple, just mount it with either the fuseiso (from fuse) or mountloop (maybe unique to Mandriva Linux) commands. Unfortunately, my quick search did not find any Windows implementations of those.

However, halfway down the fuse wiki, there are a bunch of LINKS for information and possibilities for Windows.

Another option would be to boot a Live Linux CD and use Linux to mount your Windows disk and the ISO file and then do what you want. I'm not positive which Linux distros will work, but a good place to start would be System Rescue CD or RIP Linux. There's no legitimate reason to have an ISO and not the original disc. Apple, like Microsoft, does not distribute ISOs of its OSes to end users.

Therefore, the solution would be to put in your original disc.Quote from: quaxo on June 02, 2008, 03:28:16 AM

There's no legitimate reason to have an ISO and not the original disc.

Here's a scenario. He BOUGHT the disk, copied it to an ISO file for archival purposes and then accidentally dropped and STEPPED on the disk on a rough surface. I don't know about Apple, but most licenses specifically allow making archival copies, and it's probably legal even if they don't.

Also, I read an article not long ago about how to modify an OS X distribution to make it boot on non-Apple hardware. That probably violates the license, but may not violate the law. And either way, the restriction is unethical.well at least, for music discs, I can copy, rip and burn as many copies of the original disc as many times as I like as long as I am not selling the music for money or massively SHARING it.

but for os, I don't know except for you making a copy of windows through slipstreaming. But there's all these technicalities that are annoying.

So assuming that licensing / illegality is not in play....

You've used I suppose either magiciso, isobuster or some other program. You can try some tool like daemon tools to see if iso works or not (But as far as I know, I've only used daemon tools in windows and therefore don't know how it wold read your mac disc) All the ASSUMPTIONS aside until we hear from the OP this is temporarily closed.

Solve : Help! My data was "erased" b/c I added color to the cells...?

Answer»

Help! I just spent about 5 hours inputing data into cells in MS Excel document. And I was on the last 10 minutes, doing final touches, & appearance work (such as adding color to the cells)... and then I noticed that all my data had disappeared!

I don't know how to get it back... I think i just wasted 5 hours!

Help me!Have you tried Edit/Undo to erase the color changes that apparently caused you to lose your data?Yes I have. Unfortunately, I did not notice that my data had been erased when I was adding color to the cells so I was repeatedly "saving" my document (to save the changes in color style)... I just don't know why the color would essentially "erase" all my data?!? I have attempted to change the color back to 'no fill', but everything is still gone...?!?If you remove the cell color...does the data reappear? If I remove the cell color, the data does not reappear. All the cells are still blank. There are no formulas in this MS Excel document- simply organized data. I've double/triple checked the font color and it's black while the background is now no fill color... still nothing! What version of Excel are you using?MS Excel 2003Did you APPLY the cell color changes per cell, by highlighting a row or column of cells, or globally?I have tried changing the cell color 2 ways:
- Individual cell highliting
- Highlighting a selection of cells (horizontally/vertically)

*Have not attempted to change the cell color "globally" (unsure of meaning?),

*Nor have I highlited entire rows/columns to change... will do now & see if anything appears!... no, nothing DIFFERENT.I use Excel 2000...

I just did a test with it...entering data in the cell and then using the color fill to change the background color. The text I entered was still there. I also checked the cell contents...and it's still there, as well.

I then proceeded to undo the color fill and the data remained.

I'm assuming...if you are in a cell that is supposed to have content...and the content is not there...then that information is gone...and cannot be retrieved. Especially...if you were saving the spreadsheet as you were making changes.

So...my concern is...if you were making changes and overwriting those changes by continually saving the document...and somewhere along the line...the data was lost...then you may as well consider it history.

That is...unless anyone else has anything to add to this conversation.

I'm sorry you PUT so much work into it...and I'm also sorry I wasn't much help.Quote from: Saviour on June 02, 2008, 07:09:22 PM

So...my concern is...if you were making changes and overwriting those changes by continually saving the document...and somewhere along the line...the data was lost...then you may as well consider it history.
I think Savior's assessment is about the only logical conclusion here. I'm using Excel 2003 and, LIKE Excel 2000, adding and removing a background color in a cell is not going to change the data in the cell.

Did you, at any time, save the file under a different name or in a different folder so that you would have multiple versions of it?

Solve : Outlook and MS Project query?

Answer»

Hi all,

I'm trying to find a way to use either Outlook, or MS Project to track progress and resource allocation across multiple projects here at work.

MS Project has the functionality we need, but seems to be geared around managing individual projects, one at a time.

I need to see comparative time lines and resource clashes, (personnel, plant and machinery etc) across 50+ simultaneous projects...!

I thought of TRACKING it in Outlook, creating a diary for each project, and sharing them all via the server, which would allow everyone to dip in and check whatever they need to see, but once again, I can't easily find away to bring them all together for a company wide overview, suitable for reporting & monthly board meetings.

Is this type of thing EVEN possible in MS Office suite programs?...... We have had few quotations for bespoke CRM / Workflow PACKAGES from a variety of vendors, but they are all far in excess of the budget I have to play with.

Any THOUGHTS gratefully received.

Andy

Solve : THE Best Free "Package" in your opinion?

Answer»

Hey guys, I have recently become very worried about the security of my computer. At the moment I have the following programs installed to keep my computer secure.

AVG Anti-Virus 7.5 - I am led to believe that this is no longer a good Anti-Virus due to a recent upgrade (8.0)
CCleaner
Super Anti-Spyware (SAS)
Malwarebytes'Anti Malware (MBAM)
HijackThis

Is there anything else I should have installed or anything which would offer better protection for my computer? I feel that I will need new Anti-Viruse software but I am spoiled for choice - again, any recommendations?

Thanks in advance - The Newbie You should upgrade to AVG 8.0 free version as the 7.5 free version is no longer updating it's virus definitions from MAY 31st.

AVG 8.0 free is a very good AV program.

If you download version 8 it will automatically replace version 7.5 when you run setup.
Ok thanks for the ADVICE, is version 8 free?yep the avg version 8 is free. the 7.5 the updates i read continue til the END of the year but I may be wronghttp://free.grisoft.com/ww.download?prd=afe

What firewall do you have? Maybe try Comodo...I have not installed any firewall software so i presume either I do not have a firewall or I have the firewall which came with Windows Vista. Should I loacate this and uninstall it before I install a new one?If you have windows firewall and you want to install a 3rd party firewall like comodo just turn off windows firewall and actually when you install comodo firewall it will do that automatically. You cannot uninstall windows firewall Ok thanks very MUCH for your advice I have installed AVG 8.0 and I am so far impressed with the new features. I have also installed Comodo and I am glad to have my computer nice a safe you're welcome

Solve : Audio REC. HELP?

Answer»

I have Audacity and when I record my voice from the microphone it record it very low.

I have RealTeck Audio Drivers and the sound levels are all up even the microphone.

So I think that Audacity may have a Recording Level Slider in it someware but I don't know ware to look.

Can SOMEONE help thanksYou may need to enable a "microphone boost" setting in your software, depending on your sound software. Here's what I have, with my C-Media sound software:

Can you hear anything from your speakers when you talk into your mic? INCREASE the volume (amplify) in Audacity: Select the entire wave then Effect - Amplify. CHECK "ALLOW Clipping" then move the slider to the right to what is suitable.

Click "Preview" to hear/see if there is distortion. If there is, then lower the volume a little. Hopefully that might help...I have no Microphone Boost in my Realtek sound driver.

And if you want to record from say not the MIC but your Line In jack you have to select Line In on some recording programs but I can't find ware you select what you want Audacity to pickup sound from.I am recording from my Line In I got it to work and Audacity is recording ok.

But when I PLAY it back to see how it sound it plays realy LOUD.
So I lowered the Input Volum slider you know I moved it to the left to make the sound record lower and then I play it and it is not just loud it is somewhat distured.

What it sound like is if you talk realy close to a microphone or into the telaphone.

Now Audacity records the sound even if I set the Input Level to 2 persent the slider is allmost all the way the the far left and it still is Distorded.

Even if I lower it it is still loud can anyone help

Solve : Pictures have disappeared...HELP!!!?

Answer»

Hey all,

Okay, so I was downloading pictures from my camera to my computer. Somehow, the camera download wizard THINGY froze up...I had to shut it down, but the pictures were in a file on my desktop (I was looking at them while I was downloading). The file with the new pictures I had minimized to my tray and when I pulled it up again, all the files were gone!!! They weren't deleted by me and by then they had been deleted off the camera (I do the auto delete...stupid of me).

What can I do? Is there anyway to find the photos?

I'm using a MS Windows XP and my camera is a Canon IXUS 860. Please help me!!! Those were my baby's photos from her fourth month!!!

Thank you,
SarahI personally don't know of a way, however there are some very, very smart people on this forum. Just wait and some of the Mentors, moderators and specialists will drop by. If no one can help, check out this site: http://www.photo-saver.com/recover/?pu=false&srec=true
I know absolutely nothing about it, other than it costs money. You can use this FREE software... Lab Rats shows an episode not too long ago at www.labrats.tv that shows them promoting this software with a digital camera deleting files and getting them back from the flash stick. This softwareis mainly INTENDED for thumb drives and hard drive data retrieval but it can be used for flash sticks as well.

You can get all the pictures back as long as the memory address of the pictures have not been overwritten with new data or formatted etc.

http://undelete-plus.com/Very nice DaveLembke Thanks...this was too easy to reply to....hopefully it is easy for them to get their pics back in the matter that the data storage addresses ( aka flash cells ) have not been overwritten! Thanks Dave, I'll give it a try and let you guys know how it goes...

~SarahFor the next time try using this: http://www.dealsonic.com/xtgp53usb20c.html. It is just a little thing, but it works like a dream. We bought it when the transfer software on our camera gave up the ghost and have not REGRETTED it since. Just plug it into a usb port and XP recognizes it as a hard drive even without a memory cards INSERTED. Put in a card and the Windows picture VIEWER starts up showing your pictures. You can then save them to your computer, delete them, rename them, anything at all. When you are done just disconnect and slip it into your pocket. It also writes to the memory cards. And for the price you can get 2 or 3 without breaking the bank.

Just curious ...does it ship with Win98 drivers ? ?I managed to recover data from my mother's digital camera- it was a movie where my brother was singing. Needless to say he deleted it. But I plugged it into my USB card reader and ran Fix-It Utilities file recovery program, and lo and behold, I recovered the AVI perfectly!

My brother is lucky I don't like uTube...Concerning the Win98 drivers - I did receive a mini-cd with drivers. I don't run Win98 at home so have not tried to load them.

Solve : sharefolder?

Answer»

i need to share a folder to another pc.I dont know where to start,i hope U can give me the procedure.

thanksWhat Operating System? Are the computers on a LAN network?yes I'm using lan network, and my os is windows 2ooo and windows xp,
It should be fairly easy then.

Note: You should disable sharing folders if you have a laptop that will use a public WIFI connection

Right click My Computer (located in the Start Menu and sometimes the desktop on Windows XP, located on the Desktop in Windows 2000)
Click Properites
Click the "Computer Name" tab
click "Change"
In the new window, give your computer a name if it doesnt have one (or if you just WANT to change it) and then give it a Workgroup name.
When prompted to restart after clicking OK, restart.

Do the same thing on the other computer, but, be sure to give it a different computer name. The Workgroup MUST be the same.

You can then create a new folder (I usually put shares on the desktop so I dont forget they are there) and right click your new folder, and go to "Properties" and click the "Sharing" tab. Set it up from there.

Once you have done that, the folder should be visible over the network. Click the Start button, go to Network (if its not there, its located under My Computer) and then "Entire Network" and find your workgroup. You can create a shortcut to the network share folder on the other computer by right clicking it, going to "Send To", and clicking "Create Shortcut (on desktop)"

You know, I pretty much have the Windows Operating System programmed into my head? THATS depressing...

Solve : Invalid Win32 application?

Umm, what OS is the computer you are trying to run the disk on and failing? Is it Vista? If so, have you verified that the game is Vista compatible?Good question. Maybe sfc /scannow is due.
You may also try copying DVD to your hard drive, and install it from there.I think you can try making an iso file of the dvd disk and then attempting to open it with some virtual drive software like daemon tools. This may get you to install the program and then if it install okay, then try playing game with normal disk in place. Or you can play with the virtual disk you already created (unless you want multiplayer mode, which many times don't allow virtual DISKS)when the disk is placed in another computer it instal without probelm. Solve : strange MS Word problem?

Answer»

A customer cam to me with a strange Word problem. When they hit return in the document the cursor goes to the bottom of the page. I thought that their blank document template was somehow changed but that was not it.

I found that it was not just going to the bottom of the page. It depended on what view you were using as to how it looked on the screen. If I used Normal view then the returns looked fine and the document appeared to be formatted correctly. It was when we switched to Print Layout that the strangeness could be seen.

If I hit enter three times then that would have split the page into 4 equal areas. I typed "test" and hit enter three times and in Normal view I had four lines beginning with the word test and single spaced. In Print Layout I had what looked like the start of 4 paragraphs evenly spaced on the page.

I repeated it only increasing the NUMBER of "test" lines and sure enough all were evenly spaced down the page.

I tried page setup, paragraph formatting, checked the template and all of the tabs in options and can not figure out how to get the page to format correctly.

At first we thought that it was only in the Print Layout that it was strange, but I showed that way in Print Preview also.

Has anyone seen this before? Any ideas on how to change it back? I can do a re-installation of Office, but I want to know what is causing this.

Thankscan you show us a screenshot of the problem? also what version are you using?Open up the Paragraph dialog box. In 2007, it's the little arrow in the bottom-right corner of the Paragraph group on the Home tab; I don't know exactly where it is in 2003. Click on the Line And Page Breaks tab. Make sure Page break before is unchecked. If you hit the Show/Hide key on the Standard TOOLBAR, does that reveal anything odd?

QUOTE from: Kando on May 21, 2008, 09:03:46 AM

thought that their blank document template was somehow changed but that was not it.
How do you know that?Ok, from the top:

If show/hide is pressed I see the paragraph symbol after each "test" and what looks like a bullet in front of each "test"

I checked the template "Normal" at C:\Documents and Settings\"user"\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates. It showed no changes yet acted just like the blank document.

I looked at the format paragraph box and tested the Page Break Before box. That created a new page when I hit return. All of the returns I did before this were contained on one page.

I will have to get the user to send me a screen shot and then I will post it. The version is Windows 2000.Quote from: Kando on May 21, 2008, 10:45:23 PM
Ok, from the top:

If show/hide is pressed I see the paragraph symbol after each "test" and what looks like a bullet in front of each "test"
In the Paragraph dialog box, make sure everything is unchecked, except for Window/Orphan control. And I'm assuming you already looked into this, but verify that bullets are turned off. Also make sure you are not using a certain Theme or Style Set. And what if you use another template beside Normal/Default? Does the problem still occur?

I've never encountered this sort of problem before, so I'm pretty much grasping at straws at the moment, but I will look into it further and see if I can come up with any ideas.Quote from: Kando on May 21, 2008, 10:45:23 PM
I checked the template "Normal" at C:\Documents and Settings\"user"\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates. It showed no changes yet acted just like the blank document.
I still don't THINK we can assume there's no problem with your Normal.dot file. I suggest you follow the procedure explained at http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/BlankDocNotBlank.htm for "Creating a new Normal.dot from scratch". In other words, find your Normal.dot file (with Word closed), rename it, then start Word. Word will create a new Normal.dot file. If that does not solve the problem and you want to revert to the original Normal.dot file, then just close Word and reverse the renaming procedure. I think that is what I will be doing. It should save time looking for the right settings and save more time compared to uninstalling and re-installing. Thanks
Ah, of course, good advice. I was far too tired to think of that. Let us know how it works out for you.I was not able to get back to the customer and she was not of a mind to follow the INSTRUCTIONS for recovering Normal.dot. I suggested she download Open Office and delete MS Office.

A couple of click, a check box to fill in, and she is back in business.

Thanks for all the advice and the links. I will keep them handy for the next time.

Hmm, uninstall MS Office and install OpenOffice. That's quite a leap to solve a minor problem. Well, to each his ... err, her ... own. Well, she is an older public school teacher, and with the year coming to an end it was more important to be able to get her work finished than to figure out another MS problem. She is happy with it and I come across as a hero. No complaints.Well, fixing Normal.dot is a simple procedure. Just rename the file and let Word create a new one. That would have quickly revealed whether the problem resided in the old Normal.dot.

But, anyway, if she's happy and you look like a hero, all is well then, I guess.

Solve : Bit Turrant help?

Answer»

I want to get Bit Terrant to download music and things but they say all over the internet make sure you get the real Bit Terrant not the Knock offs.

Can someone please give me not just a link to the web site but of the real file to download.
ThanksDoing this is HIGHLY illegal.

hard to be caught though (so ive heard)

you should only Dl torrents* that say they are legal to DL.

if you arent sure if they are legal they are most likely to be illegal.

it doesnt matter which program you use at all.

Bit torrent, azurez, bit LORD, bitcomet, or use opera as your web browser and you dont need an external program.

google the programs listed above. pick 1 and SEARCH for it DL it and then u have to find your own torrents.

websites such as ISOHUNT will upload music from bands that have given them permission often. they have a forum to direct you to their legal torrents.

have fun. dont DL anything illegal.

i dont

Solve : Several Microsoft .Net Framework versions?

I have these versions of MICROSOFT .Net Framework:

Microsoft .Net Framework 1.1
Microsoft .Net Framework 1.1 Hotfix (KB928366)
Microsoft .Net Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1
Microsoft .Net Framework 3.0 Service Pack 1
Microsoft .Net Framework 3.5 (Pre-Release Version)

I'm wondering if I should remove all but the 3.5 version or if I need an update or something. One framework builds upon the next...so, you may just want to leave them as they are...just in case you EVER have to revert to a previous one. Also, different programs may need different .NET versions. The .NET frameworks are NOT cumulative LIKE the Windows Service Packs are...

i haven't saved my work anywhere else.. .is there anything i can do??? im soo very very sad ..i hope i dont have to start again.

i hope ive posted this in the right section.

thanks everyone
is this a microsoft word document that you are talking about? and if so did you save it has a word document.

yes thats exactly what i was doing ..and it is a microsoft word doc.
i dont have a copy of it on the comp, its now only on the usb and it opens with little boxes.

Carbon, yes im trying to open it on the same pc, i tried another computer as well but their word wasnt working, when i opened it on their WORDPAD i got the same boxes.ok.... try placing the document ONTO your pc first and then try to open it .save it into documents etc.We might have to face the probability that the file is corrupted...corrupted

Gone to file heaven.
as carbon say's....I think that your file has been corrupted...sorry mate. What is the current file size and how long do you remember it was (like how many pages/words)?currently 43.5 KB
before approx 5pages.

thanks guys for all your helpLooks a bit more than usual (I made one with Times New Roman size 12) but the filesize seems right.

I head somewhere that Microsoft Word keeps backups to the files somewhere but don't get any hopes up.

See, this is why you should save it every so often... I learned the hard way too.yeah i know..i was saving every line...when i transferd it it went all long.i tired opening the orginal saved one...and it was telling me 'i need PERMISSION from blah blah to open the file..

thank you carbon No prob. Sorry we couldn't help much though...

This is why I have numerous back-ups on my Desktop, SD card (that's always in my laptop) and a flash drive. I'd normally work with the file on the hard drive rather than a flash drive and then copy the file to the flash drive as a backup, assuming you're working at your own computer. If you're temporarily working on someone else's computer, then having the file only on the flash drive is more justifiable. But, even that case, I'd probably copy that file to my hard drive upon returning to my computer.

I have a lot of MP3s and iTunes Music in my Laptop.

What I am going to do is go on Gigs ware people ask my to play a song and then I would change the Key it's in so somone could sing with it. And I would Mix music and ad Echo FX and thing like that.

And I would be playing a Keyboard with it the kind of things like a DJ would do.
But Virtual DJ is up there in price and I it can play MP3s but I don't know if it can play iTunes or MIDI or WAVE.

Can anyone help me let me know if it can play all of these files and if it is what I need?

Solve : autorun not working?

Answer»

Hi. Please help, I'm not clued up on computers and have a problem.

I've got an Evesham Evolution Xcaliber, intel pentium 550 (3.4GHz), windows home edition service pack 3, intel 915P chipset motherboard with duel channel DDR, 160GB SATA 7200rpm HD with 8mb cache, 512mb ultra fast DDR RAM (PC3200) 400MHz, 16x DVD-ROM, multi format dual layer DVD-RW (16x) / CD-RW (48x) drive.

When I put either a audio CD/ DVD/ or CD-ROM into either of my drives the auto run does not work. When I put a music CD into it, it doesn't start. When I put a DVD into it it does not play the film. Just tried to load a mobile PHONE software CD onto the computer and the AUTORUN facility is not working. However if I put a music CD into the drive and then manually select drive D then it will play the music, but it doesn't start automatically.

Can ANYONE help PLEASE!!!!! I'm pulling my hair out here.

Thanks in advance.... How old is the Optical drive ? ?
It may have gone South.

To test this install it in another working machine to see if it works there...Do you mean the reader inside the CD player itself? The computer was bought new in December 2004.

That reminds me. When I'm in Windows media Player and try to BURN a CD, I get a message saying to insert a CD into the device. I do this and get the same message again, even when the CD has been inserted. I can however copy Cd's to my computer without a problem. It's as if the computer isn't recognising that there is a CD in the player. I've never really used the DVD player (drive E), so why don't both of them work? If the optical drive is not working in drive D, would this then effect drive E too?

Thanks for your reply.Quote

Hi. Thanks for your reply. I have noticed that since loading Apple I tunes onto the computer for my girlfriends I tunes player this problem has surfaced. Would this Apple software have any bearing on the autorun facility?

Hey Broni,

Thanks very much for the link. The autorun now seems to be working, however if I put a CD or DVD into the DVD-RW (drive E) the box that comes up asking me what I want to do with the DVD doesn't come up. Also when playing a CD in drive D it plays OK but then pauses intermittently for a second or so, runs for say 15 secs then pauses again etc.

The download you gave me has fixed the problem of the box not coming up asking me what to do on drive D and the autorun is now working on software CD-Roms (big thanks) on drive D, but drive E doesn't seem to do anything ALTHOUGH I can hear it spinning.

Would you say that my CD/DVD players are knackered?

Once again, a big thanks for your help!!! I'm glad, it worked for one of your drives.
As for drive E, will it play anything at all, when you open CD/DVD through Windows Explorer?
It may have mechanical problems.

Solve : MS Word merge field for date?

Answer»

Is there a way to insert a date merge FIELD where the date is spelled out (June 10, 2008) and will not change if the document is reopened, resaved, modified, ETC?

Thanks for any help!I'm not quite sure I understand the question, but depending on the WORD document...you can use the "Insert" link from Word's toolbar to insert the date into a document...formatted to your liking.

Once the document is saved...the date will always appear as you have set it.On another note...

As long as you don't set the date to update automatically...it will remain the same. So if you use the Insert/Date & Time function...say for TODAY's date...and do not check the box to have it update automatically...save the document...and open it tomorrow...it will SHOW today's date.

Solve : CDBurnerXP, BurnAware, - - free CD/DVD burning software in general?

Answer»

Based on posts I've read here, just recently I pointed a friend towards CDBurnerXP and BurnAware as software for him to try for burning CDs and/or DVDs. His system is WinXP.

The link I'd given him for BurnAware is: http://www.glorylogic.com . I'd simply taken it from my bookmarks. I was surprised when he told me to visit the site.
Quote

All the rights for the BurnAware project was sold to the BurnAware Technologies company.
BurnAware Free Edition is not available!

On to CDBurnerXP......
And we saw this:
Quote
Additional software
* Nero BurnRights allows users without administrative rights
to burn CDs.

* Microsoft .NET Framework - needed for version 3.5 of
CDBurnerXP and above

Being unfamiliar with XP, I'm hoping to get some clarification here.
In other words, what are we getting into?

Has anyone here used this latest version of CDBurnerXP under WinXP? Are there any pitfalls to be aware of with installing both of the above, since it sounds like they are both required now?

Any and all comments appreciated.
Thanks

p.s. Any other free CD/DVD burning software that you recommend now?

Yeah. it's a pretty easy install. There are several versions, but the 2.0 is probably the best, it's much smaller than the latest 3.0 or 3.5 versions, which aren't really needed for many programs ANYWAY.
You may, as raised in your PM, need the Windows Installer too. It may already be installed, but to be on the safe side download it anyway.Quote from: Calum on June 09, 2008, 01:47:59 PM

"You may, ..., need the Windows Installer too."
Does that mean that if it is not already installed, that it will be needed?

I can d/l it and burn to a CD anyway. No problem.
But, when I get ahold of this XP computer, how can I tell if it needs it?
i.e., how can I tell if it is already installed?
Control Panel... ?

Thanks

Another option - if anybody can comment on it - what about simply USING an older version of CDBurnerXP?

I see v.3.0 is available, and if I understand it correctly, the .net framework is not necessary for that version.

Bad idea... ?

I just happen to use Ver. 3.0......

To be honest, I'm not sure. I've never not installed it, because I like to keep up to date. Plus, I know if I don't install it, I'll need it. Calum's law of software.

Should be under Add/Remove programs if you check the box to show updates.
If you can't see it, install it. Although you won't do any harm by simply installing it anyway, if a copy is already installed it will just be reinstalled.Quote from: Calum on June 10, 2008, 11:48:04 AM

FAIR enough.

Great! .... good to know that it won't do something odd... CREATE two installs or something.

Right now, for the sake of simplicity, and especially considering patio's comment, I'm leaning towards version 3. As I understand it, it does not require these other things - just d/l it and install.

But, with the info you've provided in this post, it is most reassuring, should I need to have a fall-back plan.

Thanks for the help and advice - to both of you.

You're welcome.
It's always good to know there is a simpler option out there, I use a fair amount of older software for that reason.

Solve : How to uninstall a password protected program?

Answer»

How do you uninstall a program that is password PROTECTED without using the password (my computer is really slow and i need to uninstall it but i don't remember the password at all)?

Edited for a more descriptive title - "HELP!!!!!!!!1" is not a good choice. Calum.Be more specific.

Which program are you trying to uninstall?

Are you actually able to get into Windows to do this, or does your computer give you a password on startup?

What version of Windows are you running?

Get these details and create comprehensible SENTENCES, and COME on back.A couple more questions as well. Is this a personal computer or a work computer? Who put the password on there? Should you be removing it? I have the same issue as the original poster.
I had INSTALLED a Child Watch type program onto my computer a while back-it has since expired. I have lost the password. I contacted support, however they told me that they are not able to retrieve my password.
I am running Windows XP, and can start up my computer fine. The only issue is that I need to install the program from my computer.
If anyone has an answer that would be fantastic.
(Even more fantastic if it was a free way)
Thanks!

Solve : Any good movie making software??

Answer»

I'm making a movie for a project for school however with windows movie maker you can't have more then one SOUND track playing at once and i need to be able to play 2 or more sounds at once. so does anyone know a free movie making program that allows me to play 2 or more sounds at once? Two sounds at once? Hard to know of a music/audio program that can easily play two sounds at once, let alone a movie program. Do you mean one sound played on a left channel and another sound on the right channel at the same time?

You could possibly use a audio editing program (Audacity) to record different sounds on the left and right channels. Then insert the two sounds in windows movie maker...Quote from: pcsourcepoint on MAY 20, 2008, 08:36:14 PM

I guess that might work however is it POSSIBLE to make one channel sound louder then the other? You should be able to select one channel (or a portion) and amplify (boost) it up, AMONGST other editing options...Quote from: pcsourcepoint on June 01, 2008, 09:04:08 PM

I think instead, i'll use the movie making program on windows xp, but ill render it twice so i can add one extra audio line.Audacity isn't as hard as it seems Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on June 10, 2008, 04:20:54 AM
Audacity isn't as hard as it seems

..oh ok..But I just don't get how to open the extensions but yah. I dont KNOW the name. My cousin gave it to me so its in japanese. he just told me to play it. However since he just mvoed 2 provinces away i cant really contact him. but im on an old comp. 2.6 GHZ, 512 MB RAM, 7600 GS vid card. Windows XP, 70 GB harddrive. 400 watt power supply. chipset is SiS 650. anything else? any help would be cool. What is the program name?
None of the above file types are executable, so there is nothing to open.File ccd - Contains information about the logical structure of the CD. The .CCD file is an ASCII text file. It is used in conjunction with the .IMG and .SUB files of the same rootname. IsoBuster can interpret these files directly. .....

Sounds like a file that needs a certain program to open it correctly.Quote from: evilfantasy on June 10, 2008, 12:11:24 AM

Solve : Any recording program other than Fraps?

Answer»

Fraps is neat and all, but when i TRY to record while playing Battlefield 2142, my fps GOES down from 50-60 to less than 20, thus aiding in me being severely owned. Is there another program i can use that doesn't rape my fps?I don't know about any other recording software but I would try reducing the graphics SETTINGS in the game.i tried putting the graphics on low settings but i hover around 20-25 fps while recordingThis is more or less excepted. I used to use Fraps to MAKE machinima for Halo PC. Every time I use it, the FPS goes down.

I would imagine this is because Fraps is using a lot of PROCESSING power to record the gameplay.well i hate it. if i could find one that doesn't munch the crap out of my processor, that would be awesome.

Solve : Runtime Error that asks if I want to debug a script error?

Answer»

I KEEP getting the following MESSAGE: A Runtime Error has occurred. Do you wish to De-Bug? Line 1 Error YAHOO.util' is null or not an object

Then I get a CHOICE of yes or no and if I say yes, I get a window that asks questions about scripts and where to break them. I have no idea how to answer these questions, and it doesn't seem to matter what I tell it to do anyway, because I see no change or improvement. The window stays until I click on STOP debugging and the same error message pops up again.

I have current Norton antivirus protection and it tells me everything is fine with the computer.

Thanks for any help.

Solve : Word 2007 Formatting Issue?

Answer»

Hello!
I hope there are several Word 2007 gurus in here from which I can gather some helpful advice.

I'm having trouble with formatting a reference guide. I have created styles for the guide. However, the one style that keeps giving me grief is the LIST style(s). It seems that when I have selected several lines of text and apply one of my created list styles to it, it wants to continue the NUMBERING from a previous list on the preceding PAGE. I right-click and select "Restart numbering". It does restart the numbering of the list; however, the PARAGRAPH formatting I had applied to that style seems to go away and the list is left-justified completely (I had it set to 1.5" inset from the left margin).

Can anyone tell me why it might be doing that?

Solve : windows media play does not recognize my mp3 player?

Answer»

Hi everyone,
I hope someone can help coz I'm very confused as to what is going on.
First, I have a dell comp, windows vista home basic and windows media player 11.
I have a sylvania MP 3 player with 1 GB.
Up until about a month ago I was able to download audio books or radio programs without any trouble.
Then suddenly wmp and overdrive media (the software to download books from library) stopped recognizing my mp 3 player.
The computer knows it is there but the two software prog. do not.
I updated the driver and that did not work. As per windows help, I rolled back the driver and the software again recognized my player. Then a few days ago, it stopped recognizing it. Again.
I check to see if the driver had updated but it hadn't.
The mp 3 player doesn't have customer support and wmp website hasn't been any help so far. Of COURSE if you dint know what you're looking for its hard to find it.
I hope I have explained this right since I'm not really good at this kind of stuff.
If anyone has a suggestion I'd really appreciate it. color=blue][/color]I pulled my HAIR out for a few days with this same problem recently, only on an XP. No media player I had installed would "see" either of my mp3 players. Turned out to be the MS Application Compatibility Client Library (whatever that is)

The fix. Uninstall WMP and then reinstall it. This should reinstall the Application Compatibility Client Library which apparently is needed for ANY media player to "see" mp3 players in Windows.

Note: I reinstalled WMP twice before it actually worked, which is why it took a few days to finally figure it out.

Thanks for the tip!
Can you tell me how to uninstall it (wmp)?
It not in the list in the control panel under programs uninstall.
thanx Sorry, forgot WMP is built in to Vista.

I did a Google and FOUND some possible solutions. Sorry I can't be more specific.
http://www.google.com/search?q=reinstall+windows+media+player+in+vista&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-aApparently, wmp cannot be removed. Its very frustating to spend so much money on computers and software and not be able to use it the way you want or do the things you want to do on it.
Microsoft has no answers and neither does anyone else so far. Except to re-install the whole os. I cant do this anyway since I have do disc.
Thanks for the help
I don't know if this will help but you could try replacing the dll
