Solve : Dragging files into "now playing" on WMP?

Answer»

Okay, I've got Windows Media Player version 9, both on the work PC and the home PC. on the work PC, I can drag files from folders on my computer into the "now playing" list, and create a playlist. When I try to do the same thing on my home computer, it won't let me. The mouse changes to the circle with the line through it, and files will not drag into WMP, in any way.

This is so frustrating. I have scoured Google for an answer, to no avail. I have dug deep in the WMP options, thinking there may be something on there, but nope. I just cannot figure out why a fundamental aspect of WMP acts differently between these two machines.

Can anyone out there assist? Are you using the SAME songs at you are at work, or different ones?

[glb]Flame[/glb]Yes.Have you TRIED running a Windows Update on BOTH computers?

[glb]Flame[/glb]I don't want to update them, because if I did, they would go to Windows Media Player 10. I want to stick with 9. I take it from the RANDOM fishing expedition, that you basically have no idea what could be causing this? If not, that's FINE. I just thought maybe someone here would know the cause off hand.

Oh well.
It may possibly be down to differences in version.

"What a twit", I hear you say. "Has he even read my post?" Well, yes I have, but it may be possible.

It's WMP 9, but that's only what they call the "major revision number". You'll also get "minor revisons", usually seperated by commas. Each bug fix or small change means they increment the minor revision up, but any major overhauls or big changes mean they increment the major one.

My guess is that your home PC is a slightly earlier version, while the work one is later and has had this bug fixed. You're best bet is to get the installer file from the machine at work (if possible) and get it onto your PC by whatever backing storage media you use. It'll probably be in the Windows Media Player directory (mines at C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\setup_wm.exe)Hey, now there's at least an idea I can try... I'm going to give that one a go this evening. I'll let you know what happens, although I have a sinking feeling that there's something else going on here, like some odd windows setting or registry entry. This is because I had in the past allowed my home machine to "update" to WMP10, and I thought that was the problem, so I went back down to 9, to no avail. Anyway, I'll give this a go, see what happens.

Thanks.Well, I went home LAST night, and remembered one other difference between the two machines. Work machine had SP2 on it, but home machine didn't (due to this problem). Well, I finally got around to fixing my computer to make it ready for SP2, and installed it. Lo and behold, drag-and-drop now works!

Go figure.

Solve : Norton Internet Security?

Answer»

Anyone know if this product can be used on more than one PC with the same subscription (ie on a network.) If it cant what is the cheapest way of getting up to date protection for all my PC's. All ideas (however CRAZY) gratefully accepted!Well.. USUALLY Norton allows you to install their products more than once... You should be able to use it more than once... Good luck!

[glb]Flame[/glb]I have installed Norton INTERNET Security 2004 on multiple machines with no problem. You can buy a three PACK version of Norton. I paid $80 and there is a $20 upgrade rebate available. I ordered mine from AtomicPark.com. They advertise same day shipment and FREE delivery. There also is a five pack available on the Symantic site, but it may be cheaper to buy two 3-packs.

Solve : MS Access Password on a form?

Answer»

I would like to CREATE a password on a form, but I cannot GET the form
to close when the wrong password is entered. I have also tried
docmd.close.
Appreciate some help.

Private Sub Form_Current()
Dim Password, Pword
Password = "Swordfish"
Pword = InputBox("Type in your password")
If Pword <> Password Then
MsgBox "Sorry, INCORRECT password"
exit
End If

End Sub
You really need to put the password routine on the procedure that opens the form. Ask for the password before you OPEN the form, not after.

Solve : win/2000/pro-win98?

Answer»

i have 2 computers with w2000pro and need to put w98 instead. but unable to erase w2p. where do i start ?? do i need to reformat or petition ? computers CAME with w2p from gateway. ( and bankrupt finantial group).
thanks jerryjpokert.......ok .......do you have as win98 boot disk ?
If you dont .....beg , borrow or steal one ......or D/l one from bootdisk.com......

Then put the boot disk in the floppy drive and at the A: prompt ........ type format C: and press enter .......you should see the warning message that if you CONTINUE all data etc on C drive will be lost ....do you wish to continue . answer yes and hit enter

now it should begin to erase all from the hard drive .
When its finished you are now ready to install whatever OPERATING sysem you wish .

Why would you want to put win98 on those machines ?
win Xp is a whole lot more STABLE .

dl65
THANKS FOR THE INFO, IT WILL HELP ALOT.
REASON FOR USING WIN/98 IS THAT I HAVE 98 & 98SE & ON A SET INCOME THANKS AGAIN. JERRYused win 98 bootdisk and it did work untell the following come up...format c: format cannot run becuse the volume is in use by another process. format may run if volume is dismounted first.
all open handles would then be invaled.
would you like to forse a dismount on this volume? y/n.

if i try (y) it gos back to the desktop ?
thanks jerryjpokert.....Thats odd...run thru exactly what you did in detail.

dl65 DOWNLOADED BOOTDISK FROM WEB DID NOT LET ME RUN ?, RUN A 95 DOOTDISK BUT I COULD NOT GET PAST THE ABOVE (FORMAT C:) READING. THE ONLY THING THAT WAS AT THE TOP THE SCREEN WAS --TYPE OF FILE IS NTFS---- IS THERE A DIFFERANCE BETWEEN 98 AND 95 BOOTDISK ?/ THESE COMPUTERS ARE EX SECURITIES UNITS AND HAD WIN/2/P SHIPED WITH THEN WILL THIS MAKE A DIFFERANCE??- THAY WERE ON A NETWORK, WILL HARD DRIVE PINS NEED TO BE CHANGED. ( MASTER, SLAVE, ETC ) THANKS JERRYTry typing FDISK instead of format c

FDISK is the program on the floppy bootdisk A and Format is the program on C which won't allow you to wipe C because this will be in use the moment you type format and open the programFDISK it from the command prompt....

c:>FDISK
this command will open up your partition info....

select option to delete partition, and delete your active partition.....it should wipe it clean then.... this woulod be the way for you to do it unless you had Part-Zap on a floppy.....with that program you could erase it with one command

Solve : Can a Dell C600 with Win 98SE be upgraded to XP??

Answer»

EaglesfanPhila.......
"Well, I called the company that I brought the laptop from and they said that I couldn't load XP to it. But when I read the system requirements for XP, my computer has more than the required amount. I don't want to go and buy and upgrade if I don't need it. "

Why did they tell you XP couldnt be loaded ? Your system specs will certainly handle it .....Was it Dell that told you this ? or did you say that you were going to borrow a copy of XP and would they load it for you .......
That should have resulted in a NO it cant be DONE answer ....
If you read the license info re the use of software , particularly Micro Soft ......it states very plainly that the software is to be installed on one machine only.......( so if you had say 3 pc's .........and had one legal copy ....it may only be installed on one machine )...It's all about licensing fees .

Solve : Norton Antivirus 2005?

Answer»
Hi
I am new to computers and these boards but I hope someone here can help a NEWBIE.
I just downloaded Norton Antivirus 2005 onto my computer but when I try to access it I get as far as the configuration screen and am told:cannot find taks, you may not have rights to read the task..error 3014554.
When I went to their website I am told how to correct it by copying files but since I am new to computing I have no idea how to do this. Does anyone here have anything that could help me???
Can you give me the link that that web page?

[glb]Flame[/glb]Thanks for replying to my problem but like I said I am a computer newbie so I don't know how to do links but the address at the bottom of the page was:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2002100717403806?OpenDocument...
I hope this helps. I was taken there when my program for Norton gave me the error message. What Operating System: Windows XP/2000 or Windows 98/Me?flyfisher......Did you follow the instuctions given on that page ?

LET us know

dl65 Sorry about that, I was just comming back to add that I have Windows 98 SE installed.
I tried what they said but as I said I am new to computers and I do not have Windows Explorer under accessories and I don't know how to copy files and am afraid to move things around and make things worse.
I seems to me they know they have a problem so they should be the ones to deal with it not the consumer.
I have been trying to clear this up all day. My Norton 2004 had to be removed to update to this one and now I am without protection! I am angery and they fix it so you can't contact them and let off steam...
I was poking around my computer and found a way to get into Windows Explorer but I found that I already have Norton set up like they are SUGGESTING, I think.
I have All users with Application Data under it then Symantec, then Common Client, Live Subscribe , Live Update and Norton Antivirus listed under Symantec.
Is this not what they are telling me to do??
The more I work on this the more confused I get....flyfisher........do you know someone who is perhaps a bit more comfortable around computers than you are ....
because ......the solution is there on the symantec site....
Even BETTER would be to get them on the phone and have one of their technicians talk you through it ........there are sveral toll free phone numbers posted on their site .......... Heres the one I used ......1-877-832-2810 ..........( I'm in Canada , but they should give you the number to call in the USA )

BTW ...Norton is a good product even if it is a bit frustrating to get set up .

Hope this helps you .

dl65 Thanks for the reply, sorry to say I am it as far as computer users are at my house. I have been the one to fix the problems and up until this mess I have done very well just by reading forums like this one and finding the cure for what is wrong with my computer. I have held off CALLING them due to the fact they state phone help is at $30.00 a call, unless it is something wrong with the program and I don't think they will say that, if I knew what I was doing I could probably fix this myself so it would be me, not the program as far as they see it.
But thanks for the help.

Solve : Import message rules OE6 to Outlook 2003?

I'm running Windows XP Home OS and just switched my email program from Outlook Express 6 to Outlook 2003. All emails and ADDRESS book transferred without PROBLEM, but I can't import my mail rules into Outlook. I'm visually impaired and would appreciate any answers to be as specific as possible. Sometimes it takes me a while to locate a feature if I'm not FAMILIAR with it, even with all accessibility options turned on. The more specific you gurus can be the easier it is for me to work the magic you prescribe!

Here's hoping you can help me!Darwinsmom,

I BELIEVE that is one of the THINGS that you cannot import into Outlook from Outlook Express. You will need to recreate them in Outlook.

Solve : Attn:  Joleen, or someone who can help.?

Answer»

I installed Windows XP without a problem. It works great. The only problem I'm having is that my printer is not printing properly. It goes through the motions but nothing is printing on the paper. Is this a driver problem or what do you think it could be? This started happening after the conversion to XP.

I checked the Lexmark website, and it states that my printer is compatible with XP. The printer is a Lexmark X5150. Any advice or troubleshooting knowledge you can give would be a big help. Did you "Add Printer" drivers into WINXP? Quote

Did you "Add Printer" drivers into WinXP?

Well, I have the printer software disk that comes with it and I installed it the same as I did when I had windows 98. It worked fine with 98 but it's not working correctly with XP. CHECK to see if it's in offline mode and that it's set to default. Will it print if you do a test print? The system sees it when you add printer and ask the system to autodetect? Are your printer cartridges empty? Also, have you downloaded the LATEST driver from the Lexmark website? It says that your printer is compatible, but that could be with the new drivers... It sounds like you have installed the OLD drivers...

[glb]Flame[/glb]I fixed the problem guys. I had to uninstall the printer and then reinstall the software again. I SPOKE with the Lexmark PEOPLE. It worked. I'm fine now.

XP is working fine. Thanks for your help, and advice on everything within the LAST week.

Solve : game always crashes and nothing is working?

Answer»

i recently installed a few games on my computer (blood and duke nukem 3d) but everytime i try to play them, they freeze after a few minutes of play. i tried everything i could find but nothing works. ms-dos keeps SAYING the files couldn't be found, and everytime i try to close those tsr thingies the computer either freezes or (if it doesn't freeze) the game won't work because i closed all the stuff. it is incredibly aggravating i can't think of anything else to try, or maybe someone could just tell me what i'm doing wrong? any help would be extremely appreciated, thanksI need some additional information... Which OPERATING system are you using? Also, how much RAM do you have installed? Also, what is your processor speed? It sounds to me like your computer does not meet the the system specs. that the game calls for...

[glb]Flame[/glb]i'm using windows 98 (the operating system the game was designed for), i have 48 mb of ram, and the processor speed is a pentium 2 processor (if that's what you mean by processor speedcody.....I'm not a gamer , but 48mb isnt a lot of Ram .....it might be a idea to CHECK your games and see what the minimum system requirements for them are .......Also check the game makers website .....there may be patches available for that game.

Hope this helps you

dl65 I agree... I think that you NEED 128 MB of RAM at LEAST...

[glb]Flame[/glb]mmm...
I'm not so sure, Duke Nukem 3D and blood are INDEED old games PLAYABLE in DOS and sometimes needed only 640k or RAM, I'm pretty sure 48 MB is enough, I used to play Quake in Windows with only 16 MB RAM and a pentium 1 133 MHz.
I'd say your computer looks fine.

Have you tried restarting in ms-dos and try running the game just to see if the same problem occurs?

And MS-DOS says wich files are missing? maybe your missing some texture or sound files...

Solve : How can i get rid of Spyware?

Answer»

Hi

I have the programes Ad-Aware and Spybot search and destroy. The problem i have is each time i boot my computer i have about 35 diffrent spyware. I thought that Adaware would GET rid of these, but even though it detects them and DELETES them there back as soon as i reboot. They come under the list of MUR and Tracking cookies. Can anyone tell me how to delete these permanently. Or give me a link to a free good spyware removal.

Thanks.Ad-Aware and Spybot search and destroy are good tools, but no single spyware/adware removal program will catch everything. I'm not sure what your problem is there. What firewall are you using? Do you have SP2 for Windows XP installed? Other than the recurring items in Ad-aware, does your computer seem to be running normal? No performance degradation? No bombardment with pop-ups when you open your browser and go online?

You might try Windows Defender (Beta 2) as another spyware defense. I'll also suggest you get CCleaner. When installing it, uncheck the box for Yahoo toolbar so that does not get installed ALONG with CCleaner.
Try once doing this in Safe Mode with System RESTORE turned off. Then reboot and scan again. Is it any better?hey what about the ewido program?? that works good

Solve : Using MS Outlook while travelling?

Answer»

How do I get MS Outlook to send and receive e-mail via the variety of wireless networks I encounter while traveling with my laptop computer. I can access the internet just fine everywhere I go, but Outlook only seems to work with the signal from my own router at home. I've disabled the Windows firewall, and have configured Norton Personal Firewall to permit Outlook. What am I missing?

For two years I've been trying to get an answer from every computer forum on the planet; all I've recieved are generic answers which don't solve the problem. Meanwhile I see people using Outlook to access their email while they are on the road. (I can't very well ask them why mine doesn't work since most don't even have a clue why theirs DOES work).

I hope someone can give some specific advice to solve this problem... I'm about out of options as well as computer discussion forums. If you can you will have my undying gratitude!!Does your ISP offer web based e-mail? That is a handy thing to use as you can access your e-mail from any computer anywhere that has internet access. It does, and that's what I have to use. But that doesn't solve the problem I've outlined.Well, let's cover what you have learned so far. What hasn't worked could be very helpful and prevent redundancy.Well, I've pretty much outlined it in my original post. But here are some more details:

My ISP is CableUSA, but my e-mail comes through my website (www.skyscapes.com) server SimpleNet (and then into my home via CableUSA). When I'm on the road I can access the e-mail via the web-based e-mail at SimpleNet.

They've recommended I set both my POP3 and SMTP to mail.skyscapes.com and my outgoing server port number at 587 (instead of 25). Once I did that I was FINALLY able to use Outlook with my wireless network at home.

Today I took the laptop out to the public library where I know they've got a strong signal, and I was unable to use it. I sent a test message, and tried send/receive, but it told me I was unable to receive (not particularly efficient for an e-mail program!). So that's pretty much where I'm at.

When there's not a wireless signal around I can plug into a phone line and use Outlook with my ATT account. I've got the POP3 there configured postoffice.att.net and the SMTP as mailhost.worldnet.att.net These make sense because I'm directly connected through ATT.

But when I'm trying to use one of a variety of wireless netorks out there in hotels, restaurants, etc. it doesn't work. I understand if I configure Outlook for each particular network I could probably get it to work if I could FIGURE out what the POP3 and SMTP for each network is... that seems like such a hassle.

It seems like there should be an automatic way for Outlook to automatically configure itself for various networks, no? Or maybe I just don't understand what's all going on behind the scenes.

Thanks for taking the time to help out on this... there isn't much hair left to pull out!

Personally I use web based mail because it is simple and it always works from anywhere, even if I don't have the actual computer with me, but here is some reading. This may or may not be new to you:

http://blogcastrepository.com/blogs/brian_tucker/archive/2005/11/28/201.aspx

http://www.comcast.net/help/faq/index.jsp?faq=EmailOutlook18532

Mail servers should theoretically be accessible from anywhere on the internet. This is because they have to accept mail (for their end users) from anywhere on the internet. Bottom line: you should be able to use the same mail server (POP3 and SMTP) wherever you are.

There is a caveat: some ISPs may block incoming POP3 connections (that's the "receive" part as far as you're concerned) from certain network addresses. You could check this point with your ISP.

Now, lets run some tests, from somewhere where you can't normally connect. BRING up a command prompt, and type the FOLLOWING:telnet mail.skyscapes.com 110This attempts to connect to your ISP's POP server, which runs on port 110. You should see a response similar to this:Connecting to mail.skyscapes.com.
+OK <[emailprotected]>To get out of that, press Ctrl+], then type "quit".

The test for SMTP is similar:telnet mail.skyscapes.com 25- the SMTP service usually runs on port 25, although I note from what you said above that they also accept SMTP connections on port 587.

Please report back your results from these two tests. When connected to a wireless network, are you usually able to browse the internet smoothly?

NB I connected fine to your ISP's server (POP3 and SMTP), so it doesn't look like they employ the blocking that I mentioned.

Solve : Paint error?

Answer»

I have 2 computers. One is a Windows 98SE and the other is a Windows XP. I saved all my images to a zip disk from the 98 machine and loaded them on to the XP machine. I am getting an error when I attempt to OPEN these bitmaps. "Paint cannot read this file. This is not a valid bitmap file, or its format is not currently supported" I have SEARCHED everywhere and can not find any INFO as to why this is happening or a fix for it. Any ideas?Have you tried saving them and transfering them again? Sometimes you will just get a BAD copy.

Try using another disk, that happened to me once and I found out it was the disk which didn't work. What file extension did you SAVE the image under? (.gif , .jpeg , etc. )

Solve : Old software?

Answer»

I need help. I BOUGHT a game a while back. It's a flight sim CALLED Tornado(circa 1993). I(my friend) finally figured out how to run it on my box using an emulator called DOS box 6.0. I recently purchased another game from 93 called "Termintor 2029" and I can't even read the first DISK to install. I also bought "DOOM II" and can't play it. What is going on? I own a Dell dimensia 8100 w/a P4 and 384 RAM and that's about all I know. Can any one help me?If you are really wanting to play circa 1993 games, your best bet would be to use a circa 1993 computer.

Emulation software can be good but it is not perfect and it may have been written more towards emulating for production software not games.

I think you will find that a lot of those games want to directly interact with the processor and memory and don't like what they are SEEING. They may also be submitting requests to the CPU and receiving the information back much faster than they can process it.

I SAW a lot of programs have that problem when the first (yes I said first) pentium chips came out. The chip would overrun the program.

GaryDOSBox is made specifically for games:
http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/news.php?show_news=1

It should most all DOS games. DOOM II is not a DOS game, it's a Windows game.

No, i have still got 98se,I have been on holiday so decided to wait until i returned before i put in the xp cd rom. j.j.jjeany106.....I think what the others were telling you was to save ANYTHING that currently in the win 98 SE system ...for example any pictures , possibly your E mail address book and that sort of thing ...... burn that sort of thing to a cd and then it will be available when you install the new O/S Win Xp .....
Remember to start with a clean slate .....in other word completely wipe or Format your HARD drive .........Then
do the following .....
1 install win XP
2 install your anti virus program
3 Now go on -line and get all the updates from M/S ....both critical and other .....and any drivers that may be available for you ......Make sure you get SP2 and all of its updates ........Be sure you have turned on your Auto update feature ...... Then and only then reload whatever programs you use .

Solve : Microsoft Office 2003 sku112.cab file?

Answer»

I have Microsoft Office 2003, and I tried to upgrade it yesterday, but EVERYTIME I tried to upgrade, it asks for the "sku112.cab" file. I have searched other forums and I could not find any help. Please any suggestions. If somebody has Microsoft Office 2003 please look in this location C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\1033\112, I think that file is there, if you find it, please send it to me to [emailprotected] Thanks for you help. They would need to have MS Office 2003 Standard EDITION, that is the "112" part.

Microsoft suggests that you have multiple versions of Office (Professional, Standard, SBE) and to fix just uninstall all office applications and reinstall them.

I don't have the cd, it CAME already installed in the computer, i found the file, but it is corrupt.I have seen many computers come with preinstalled software. I have never seen computers come with preinstalled software without the ability to reinstall that software. (At least not computers from reputable vendors.)

Sometimes the INSTALLATION disks are located on your hard drive and your are expected to make copies of them. Sometimes they are located on a "master" cd. The computer vendor has to give you a way to recover you OS and software.

Solve : coping dvd?

Answer»

I hooked up my ps2 via usb to my computer to COPY
a dvd and nothing happened. does any one know
how to make this work? Are there ABNY drivers that you need to install? What operating system is this?

[glb]Flame[/glb]I don't know if i have to load any drivers or not.
I am running XP pro. When you say "ps2" are you referring to a Play Station?

If so I would suggest the XP by default cannot read a Play Station. You would need to SEARCH SONY or the web for XP drivers that would allow it to read a Play Station.

I've never heard of anyone hooking their PS2 up to a computer. If you want to copy the dvd then why not just do it with the computer itself?I have tried using just the computer but haven't
figured it out either. Do I have to have 2 dvd
burners to do this. I have a cdrom and dvd burner.
Is there a way to copy the dvd to the computer hard
drive and then burn to dvd?You should be able to put your DVD into the drive, copy to a temp directory then put the BLANK DVD in and copy to disk.Sorry, meant to modify above. If you're going to copy a movie then it won't work as you have to do some compression stuff before it will fit to a burnable DVD disk.Do you know what kind of compression and how i
would do that? This will work: http://www.nero.com/us/index.html
Does not copy DVD's with copy protection.I recommend a search of the CH forums for more on this topic. It's been answered a dozen times before.

Solve : transfering data?

Answer»

Trying to transfer data from computer to another. The old is a me2000 the new is an xp. The data from the old was downloaded to a cd, but when I try to open on new computer it states it is read only. What do I need to do to transfer info?Once the file is on your XP computer, right click it, choose properties from the menu, TURN off the read only check box, click OK.

You can select MULTIPLE files at a time to do this.

When a file is written to a CD is becomes read only because the CD is read only, it maintains this setting when copied from the CD.

I tried that it keeps jumping back to read only.are you SELECTING 'ARCHIVE' after you unselect 'Read Only'?

Is the folder you are copying the files to, set to Read Only?

I believe that copying to a CD will make the files read-only. Go into the properties and change it after copying back to the new drive.I changed it from read only to archive PUSHED aplly and ok. When I went back into the file it said acess denied and I checked the properties and it went back to read only. What now?You are changing these settings on the file on the hard drive, not the CD, right?I will try this. Thanks http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/expert/crawford_november12.mspx

Solve : Hello. It's me again.  Questions on Memory Upgrade?

When upgrading a Dell C600 to 512MB of RAM, am i removing the 256RAM chip already in there and adding ONE 512 chip or am I adding another 256RAM chip to the mother board, which means there will be 2/256RAM chips installed?

Solve : Colour Swatch Slection available in Photoshop etc.?

Hey You Gifted Photoshop / Image Manipulation Nerds!
My Humble Pranaams!
Here is a problem I am unable to solve on my own, as a very low level Photoshop/CorelDraw/Corel Photopaint USER, for purposes of medical illustrations especially displaying and printing natural images of Surgical Operative fields (Video/Still) and Pathology Specimens in their natural colours. Mother Nature's plethora of colour swatches being a zillion times richer than Adobe and others' man-made colour swatches, colours like Glittering Gold in many shades, Shiny Silver, Blood Red etc., do not come out well through Photoshop though I can capture them in my VideoCam or even on some medical WEBSITES. Moment I transfer those captures into Photoshop, PS repaints them with its own limited colour swatches, making them lose all the glitter and gleen and shine! How do I get over this handicap? Is there any other way of getting over this limitation of PS? (Admittedly I am a sworn admirer of Adobe Photoshop!)! Is there any other package which can meet my requirements?

Solve : OS's that are compatible with IBM?

I'm just a little curious as to why you want rid of MS operating system .

dl65
Thank you so much for replying and info.
Well, I've had so many crashes and had to restore more times than I can count. I currently run 98SE on an HP 8580C lemon which overheats dramatically, but that has been dealt with. However, Windows, though easy to use, has proven to be very unreliable. If I update, everything crashes and I have to start all over. If I don't up date, things seem to run OK until I install the Adobe Suite (Old version, Photoshop is 5.5) or MS Office 2000. In fact, regardless what programs I choose to use, 98SE invariably gives me the screen of death then ultimately won't reload even with the rescue disk. (I do run virus protection, firewall, and malware programs and religiously update and scan daily) Basically, I'm tired. I loved Windows 3.11, and thought I would love 98. It has great features but is very undependable. Also, since I began using 98SE in '99, I've easily spent one year of that time attempting to resolve conflicts and issues. I've even tried ME but same occurs. For a time I was confident many of the probs I experienced are related to HP's configuration but I've reformated and gone back with just Windows and still have probs. :-/ So.... Am now seeking an OS that will function with my existing programs that is reliable.

Again, Thank you so much for your reply. Am preparing to go do some reading. Faem......Well if you want a stable operating system ......try Win XP .......it is the BEST one that I've seen overall. Win ME is probably the worst platform ever devised ( Although Merlin 2 wouldn't agree) .

Good luck

dl65 LOL about Merlin2.
It's my understanding that XP doesn't like old PIII's and the drivers for everything that came with it. Also that finding the drivers to upgrade the PIII to something XP likes is supposed to be a major headache.
Is there any truth to that?

Thank you for the suggestion.
Also, thanks for the previous LINK. Am learning a lot because of it.No truth to that at all. I have never had a problem putting XP on a P III. Nor have I had any problems finding the proper drivers, except one for a very old scanner that needed to be replaced anyway.

For God's sakes people, Windows is not the be-all-and-end-all of operating systems! Widen your horizons (man...)

Worth a read: http://www.dmoz.org/Computers/Software/Operating_Systems/

Oh, and dl65:
Quote

I'm just a little curious as to why you want rid of MS operating system .

What, asides from the fact XP is a pile of poo?

And Faem, if you want a "try before you buy" (or in this case, download for free) operating system, Knoppix is a Linux distribution that runs straight off a CD, and does not install anything on your hard drive - unless you tell it to explicitly, of course. http://www.knoppix.org/[I'm so ignorant! lol]
About Knoppix, does one remove Windows before one can run Knoppix from CD?
I do apologize for my ignorance but am working fervently to alleviate that. As you can see, all I've ever worked with is Microsoft and have come to believe they use the public's ignorance to maintain control. Furthermore, after my experiences with MS I also believe it proprietorial and is interfering with my ability to use OPEN Source programs because after updates if I have an Open Source program my system dies. Also, not so terribly long ago there was a MS fault that ate many of the graphics I created for web designs. Eventually, after it destroyed even my backups, I was able to trace the problem to Microsoft and get a fix for it but not before it destroyed over a year's worth of work.
So, yes... I'm fed up with MS but dread the learning curve of a new OS.Quote
...I'm fed up with MS but dread the learning curve of a new OS.

Not that much different from Win98. You can choose to configure WinXP as "Classic Desktop". Then the "look and feel" is almost identical. You can have both OS's and have a "dual boot" computer.

However, WinXP needs memory. I recommend 256MB (or more) and no less than 128MB.
Whooooa...
Quote
You can have both OS's and have a "dual boot" computer.

This gets more interesting by the minute and each time the learning curve goes up. LOL

I've heard of "dual boot" but haven't the foggiest on how to begin. I think I was dreaming to think there is an OS out there that I could just install and go.
*a bit embarrassed by my naivete`*

Seems the more I learn the more I am going to need to learn if I am going to migrate to another OS. Also, the biggest prob I'm encountering is finding the minimum PC requirements for each OS except for MS products. They PUT the minimum requirements right out front where they are easy to find.

You all are providing quite and education! Working hard here to be a sponge and absorb it all. lol

No, you can keep Windows! That's pretty much the point of Knoppix: a try-before-you-reformat-and-wonder-why-you-didn't-use-Linux-all-along type thing.

All you really need to do is change the boot order in the BIOS. On most systems, you hit [Delete] whilst the PC POSTs (starts up) and you'll be able to access it. You then just need to find out where you change the boot order (it's different depending on the type of BIOS) and make sure you are booting from the CD drive first.

If you don't like it, you just remove the CD, go back into the BIOS and boot from the hard drive again. It's pretty straightforward really, especially if you've been in the BIOS before.Koppix sounds pretty straight forward and easy, plus an excellent way to see what linux is about. As soon as I get this pc running again, I'm downloading it and give a try. Had to install a new hd and still isn't operating right.
Appreciate everyone's help. Ever so ready to venture into new Territory.

FrontPage's dreaded service.cnf error

FrontPage's one-button publishing feature is outstanding--until it comes to error reporting. This week's tip involves a common publishing error and the nonsensical error message it generates.

The error occurs when you're running out of SERVER space. The error message looks something like this: Server Error. Cannot close file "/web/_vti_pvt/service.cnf."

If you see that error, you must contact your Web presence provider to secure additional server space or delete some files on the server, which you can do by opening the remote version of your Web in FrontPage.

Like many Windows programs, the FrontPage Server EXTENSIONS require a lot of overhead. That's why you may get the service.cnf error even when you have several megabytes of space available.

hope this helps you ....

Solve : Windows XP on P3 500 MHZ - Keyboard Mouse Disabled?

Answer»

The PC under reference is HP's BRIO Ba 600 with
Pentium P3 500 MHz Processor and 512 MB SDRAM
with a Seagate 20 GB HDD.
When I used it with Windows 98 Second Edition, I had no problems with using my DOS, Q-BASIC and FoxPro
For DOS Programs from the MS DOS Prompt of Win98.
RECENTLY I installed Windows XP over Windows 98 and
thereafter I could not use my DOS (QBasic and
Foxpro) Programs inside WIN XP in this machine;
Foxpro window would open and do the job but when I
quit Foxpro, Windows XP would crash and I had to
reboot, scan disk etc., etc., ALSO alternate warm or
cold reboots had the keyboard and Mouse disabled!
(I have noviruses to blame for this, thanks to XP's
firewall, spyware detector and Norton Antivirus
including Autoprotect.).
To get over these two problems, I recently
formatted the HDD, partitioned it into 3 - with the first 2 GB FAT (For my DOS Programs including FOXPRO),
the second 9 GB FAT 32 where I installed Windows 98 and the third 9 GB FAT 32 for Windows XP Professional with SP2. The System boots into Windows XP. Now my DOS programs work in this machine very well without
crashing XP on Exit! But alternate boots continue to
have the other old problem of keyboard and mouse
being disabled in every second boot, I can't even get
into setup with F2 nor skip scandisc by pressing any
key! Laboriously I have to go through turning off from
the front panel, reboot and wait for XP to settle down with keyboard and mouse enabled in the next boot.
Why does this happen? WHY ME? How do I solve this
problem? Please help!! I am not a computer geek - I am only a careful PC user! Please tailor down your
guidance to my low level of expertise!
Zillion Thanks!

<[emailprotected]>Hello Sukanth

First I suggest that you refrain from from giving personal details such as your full name, occupation and address on an open forum. There are a LOT of nasty people out there who thrive on that kind of info.

On bootup do you have the option of which OS to start?
Thank You Dusty!
I take your advice reg security in open fora.
At boot my system does not give me any option but goes into XP straight. But while inside XP I am able to work on DOS/Foxpro etc., since I have a FAT partition also.
Look forward to your reply!Hello again...

I have done some searching but regret I have no positive answer(s) for you. It seems to me that your MBR may not have been correctly setup when you Fdisk'd/formatted but my level of knowledge does not allow me to give a definitive response - sorry.

Perhaps one of two of the more experienced forum members would like to comment.
