Solve : PNY RAM not compatible?

Answer»

I bought a PNY RAM 512 MB, PC133, SDRAM. It is not compatible with my old RAM. I ran a memory test on just the PNY RAM, and the PNY RAM with my current RAM. The PNY RAM by itself passes the test. I ran it all night with the extended test scenario. When I combine the PNY RAM with my other RAM, it fails almost immediately. This is the second stick of PNY RAM I've received that has failed. The PNY RAM is listed at http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=111533&CatId=829. With the first stick, it was causing random corrupt files. I'll assume the second stick would do the same.

I called to complain about the second stick of RAM. PNY tech support said "nothing is wrong with the RAM I already returned". They also said if I return the second stick and there is "nothing wrong with it", then they won't send me any more RAM. They run TESTS on EVERY stick before it's sent out. Their quick test is more comprehensive than my 12 hours of testing. They said to run the test without my original RAM.

It's obvious the PNY RAM isn't 100% compatible as stated. It's obvious there "Lifetime Guarantee isn't. My questions is this: When I call to complain again about the PNY RAM, is there any meat to them saying, "It's not the PNY RAM, it's your old RAM that is the problem."

I'm already past the 30 day return. I have an ASUS A7V133A mobo which can handle up to 3 sticks of RAM, up to 1.5 GB.just how different are the RAM modules? Do the same tests on your old RAM pass just as well alone? The old RAM passes with flying colors when combined together. I didn't test the old RAM alone because it passes together. Does this matter?

I don't have the brand name handy at the moment, but the RAM is the same spec, SDRAM, PC133, 168 pin DIMM, 3.3v, unbuffered, and 4 clocks signals per dimm. The only difference is the old RAM is 256MB + 512MB and they are both different companies than PNY. The new PNY RAM is 512MB.Well you can't be sure unless you test each one individually... I've seen RAM act up like that... Also... I've seen motherboards be picky about which module went first... Did you put the largest module in slot 1? You'll have to test each combination of modules to SEE which is the culprit. Before you started swapping memory around, did you ground yourself? Even ESD that you can't feel can fry a memory chip. Also... what CPU are you using?

Also.. have you made sure it's supposed to be compatible? http://www.pny.com/configurator/

I've read where PNY is very picky about mixing modules of different manf. What kind of machine is it? Tere are problems with older machines and high density ram vs. the low density modules they came with.It was a custom built, ASUS A7V133A motherboard, AMD 1200 CPU. I was running some more tests yesterday and last night. It appears that only certain combinations of the RAM will cause it to fail when combined with the PNY RAM! Weird.

I have 2 sticks of 512MB and 1 of 256MB. I've tested the two 512's togther and they passed. I've tested the two 512's and the 256 and it failed. I'm testing the PNY 512 and the 256 right now. I'll post the results when finished. I'm also trying different slots on the motherboard in hopes that means something. The results boiled down to the PNY RAM will work with one other stick of RAM. I tried one other 512, one 256, and two different 128's. Can anybody explain that?

What was also weird, the PNY memory only failed on the LRAND test (random memory). It passed all of the other tests.

My mobo can handle any combination of single or double-sided SDRAM upto 1536MB.It's all down to tolerances which is why it's better to buy not only from the same manufacturer, but if possible, from the same batch.
Conventional electronics has been PUSHED to the very edge of it's frontiers by todays computers.

Solve : System Errors?

Answer»

I recently bought brand new RAM for my computer and DECIDED to put them in. The computer started normally and read the RAM correctly but automaticly restarted when it was about to finish the Windows XP loading screen. I tried to access Windows via safe mode and got until the choose user screen where it crashed except this time displaying a error having to do with "vga.dll". I restarted the computer (Through the reset button on the tower) and it did the exact same thing except the error was about "wdmaud.sys". The error occurs even before the RAM was inserted but less requent. Why can't my computer start up normally and why does the problem become more frequent when the RAM is inserted? So if you TAKE the new RAM out, it is FINE for the most part? Have you SCANNED for viruses and Spyware? Have you made any changes to your system recently?

FlameQuote

.....and why does the problem become more frequent when the RAM is inserted?

Is this a clue that it was happening before?
It seems so... It's not NORMAL behavior... Tell us when this started, and if you made any changes prior to it appearing please

Solve : WD drive not recognised?

Answer»

I have a Western Digital drive - WD3000JB - I wiped the hard drive on my computer (an 80GB one) and reformatted it a while back - when I got everything back up, the computer doesn't recognise the 300 gb drive. I just got an external enclosure, and put that in there, and it does the same thing on several computers. It is there in the device manager, and there is no updated driver AVAILABLE. It is enabled. In the administrator tools, it shows the drive as having a partition of 300 GB, but won't assign it a letter or allow me to force it to assign one or change it from NONE to having one. WD Lifeguard tools only gives me the option to repartition or REFORMAT it - recognises it, but gives it no letter either. What can I do? I have some stuff on here I'd rather not lose by reformatting and repartitioning it. Is there a program to pull stuff off a DAMAGED partition?

Solve : ASUS A9550GE video card?

Answer»

Hi,

I purchased a new ASUS A9550GE video card. Ive had it tested and it RUNS fine. On my machine the computer boots up fine loads windows etc. (All DRIVERS are installed). But as soon as i try to do anything, (excluding moving the mouse) the monitor screen goes black, for about 20 seconds then the computer reboots.

Anybody had a problem like this before? Or know of a possible solution?

AndrewWhat other COMPONENTS are in your computer, including power SUPPLY?Power supply, network card (ive tried it without), dvd/cdrw drive, floppy, h/d. Ive stripped it right down.
Did you fully remove the drivers and any software for the old card before installing the new one?
Does Asus support have anything to say on this issue?CRT or LCD monitor?
What happens in Safe MODE?

Solve : internet connection?

Answer»

dell 4550, xp, integrated 10/100 network card. i am having trouble CONNECTING to the internet. my onboard net card won't connect at all when switched to autosense or 100mbs. so i installed a pci net card, when on autosense or 100mbs, the computer switches back and forth from "aquiring network address" to "a network cable is unplugged". both CARDS WILL connect when switched to 10mbs, i can also connect at 10mbs when i hook to the dsl box with a usb cable. seems like there is something wrong with some program that controls these THINGS. if you folks can think of anything that might help, it would be greatly appriciated. thank you.
asdf12..... Was the integrated port not WORKING or where you playing around changing settings ?
Have you been updating drivers or anything like that ?

dl65 More DETAILS needed such as router/modem, are any other machines to be networked etc.
For now, as you have been playing with rate settings etc, uninstall both NICs via Control Panel, switch off and either remove the addin card or disable the onboard card.
Reboot and Windows will find and install the remaining card.

From here it depends on what setup you have so don't do any more yet.

Solve : problem with HD?

Answer» HI people, second post, this time its a prob with my comps HD.
I just recently transported a HD of mine from overseas and when i built my new comp here and attached the old HD (i slaved it) the system just wouldn't power on. i see the fan jolt but that's it, without the HD connected the system powers on and etc. now what i'm wonderin is why the system doesn't power on, i mean if the HD can't be detected or soemthing wouldn' the system still be powering on? or could there be something in the power plug of the HD causing the power flow to the rest of my comp to stop. i have lost almost ALL of my mp3's and movies which i have kept in there for so long, i REALLY need this data for i DJ from time to time and need my playlists and mixes that i created. even more pressure is that my freakin ipod (@##$%@ APPLE!!!) has also had a HD failure meanin it too will be formated to fix the problem and taking along ALL of my mixes along with it. so please GIVE me some advice on what to do, is there a way i can open it up or have it repaired?
thanks
noobleswhat is the model and make of your drive? I've never heard of a hdd causing a system not to boot, but hey.. I learn something new everyday... You say it's from overseas? Does it use the conventional power reqs?Ayt, i checked the HD and its a 40 gig barracuda 7200.7. i believe it uses normal power reqs and yea i bought it from overseas while i was there (philippines, but i think its made in china or some *censored*). anyways a friend of mine told me to TRY pluggin it in those external casings so maybe that may help. what you think? If a drive won't work from the IDE channel, there's even less chance of it working from a cradle.
Disconnect all other drives in the system, set this one to master or cable select and pop it on the primary channel on it's own. What happens now?

Solve : Adding a hard drive.?

Answer»

Ok, I have bought and installed my second HD. (minus plugging power and sata cables in) I would like to run them in RAID-0. The HD in there now is only a month OLD. My question is am I going to have to erase everything on the HD and start all over again? How do I go about clearing everything off of the HD? Any tips or help would be much appreciated. I am hoping this isnt going to be the trouble it is SHAPING up to becoming. If anyone can point me in the right direction, that would be appreciated...

System, dual core 4800, asus sli motherboard, 2- 7800 GTX video cards, 2 gig meemory, X-fi sound,XP-pro, 2-Raptor 74 gb 10,000 rpm HD ( one working the other waiting to get into action).

Thanksthor5268.... The best advice would be for you to thoroughly read the mobo manual ...... it will describe in detail how to setup and configure the raid array.

dl65 yeah the manual and LOOKING in the bios will tell you for sure... but in all likely hood you will be required to format the hard drive to do raid-0, but even still just back up all your stuff onto CD-Rs or DVD-Rs. if going to raid 0 you should back up your data anyways. raid 0 spans data across both hard drives so if one dies you lose everything and not having a backup is really going to suck. raid 0 is great, just make sure anything you dont want to lose is backed up somehow. with the asus sli mobo, odds are you are setting up raid through NVRaid which is done in the bios. just go in and enable raid and use the config menu to set it up and add hdds. when you get into windows, probably have to use computer managament to create a new volume and/or assign drive letter to get it to recognize.Sounds GOOD..... Thanks for the help GUYS.... Let the fun begin.. :-/

Solve : Dell Inspiron 1150 won't power up?

Answer»

I have a Dell Inspiron 1150 laptop. 2 weeks after the waranty ENDED (no joke) it went dead. No fan, beeps, etc. Small flash on leds when power button is started. I read it could be either a power supply problem (tested with other BATTERY and AC adapter, no change), or motherboard. If it is motherboard, can I upgrade, or would I be better off buying a new system altogehter?

Any help, tips, suggestions greatly thanked.I EXPERIENCED a similar issue... You plug in the AC adapter to the wall and computer, and the light goes out... Nothing CHARGES... It may be a motherboard issue :-/ Not saying it is, but it might be. If it is, you're better off buying another computer... Also, dells make very bad laptops... Might I suggest oshiba or Sony?

Flamei had a similar problem but the costomer wanted it fixed so i sent it away it was $640.00 for a new board and a new stick of ram, that included shipping, so do what the other post said look at a new laptop, also look at a fan system which the laptop sits in to keep it cool it will help the life. Hope this helps

NocfedSometimes a totally dead battery can cause this phenomenon. Does the battery charge? If you pull it out is there a small button to press adjacent to some LED's which show battery state (usually 5 of them)? How old is the machine and is this the original battery? I have seen several laptops that even though they were plugged in to a good power adapter just flat would not start until a new battery was installed. Do you have a friend with a similar unit you could try the battery theory with?QUOTE

(tested with other battery and AC adapter, no change)

I'm not sure a new one would work... :-/

Flame
Sorry, I missed that. Are there any flashing lights on the case? Like amber where it used to be green?Only lights are a single flash of green when the power button is pushed.

Thanks to all for the input.

Solve : Replace existing hard drive?

Answer»

I need to replace my existing hard drive with a larger drive.
How do I transfer the info. from the OLD drive to the new drive ?i. SET jumpers ON NEW ONE to SL, or slave.
ii.make sure the other is master.
iii. start computer. if in windows it should turn up in my computer . then just drag and drop.^
/\ what he said, but ur gonna have to format the new hd before dragging and dropping. u will find that out the second u TRY doing that without it being formatted. As you want to replace your existing drive why not install the new hdd as the master, fdisk, partition, format as necessary, install the OS then copy from the old hdd which you will have made the slave :-?

Do you mean that you want to copy everything, including the OS, from your old drive to the new one, and not need to reinstall Windows? That was my interpretation of your question, but, so far, the other 3 replies preceding mine did not seem to interpret your question that way.

If this is what you want to do, it should be possible using software provided by the hard drive manufacturer. For example, Western Digital, which I'm most familiar with, provides their Data Lifeguard TOOLS software with retail drives. If you bought an OEM drive, meaning you just get the drive, you can visit the manufacturer's WEB site to download the software.

Solve : Funny Sound!?

Answer»

I am having problems with the sound coming from my pc.
I troubleshoot my sound card and drivers and they seem to be working properly.
However, on listening to voice, music data, the sould appears to be v.fast and high pitched.
On my Volume CONTROL application, when i change the volume control it has no effect on my sound. However, when i change the wave control it increases or decreased the volume accordingly.
I cannot see what is wrong. Any ideas??have you downloaded the up to date drivers for the audio of your mobo? or have you installed the sound drivers for ur mobo?Yes.. Usually it's the sound DRIVER that creates that chipmunk affect with music... But I've also seen some players cause the problem too.. Which player do you USE?yes, i updated my drivers but then on re-booting my pc it failed so i had to uninstall these drivers, and reinstalled the old ones. I have troubleshooted these and they appear to be working correctly.they're working correctly? I thought you said you heard the music on fast forward.. Or something to that effect..i normally use real player but i sometimes use WINAMP. It is the same effect for bothyou sure youre downloading the right audio drivers for ur model of mobo? it has to be for that specific mobo or else there could be dire consequencesOn troubleshooting my drivers the message "This device is working properly" appears. However, yes i am still getting a funny sound.I know that we had a batch of onboard audio devices that would look to work fine with a particular driver, but had the chipmunk affect. When we installed the SoundMax driver, it fixed it.ok thanks, ill double check my drivers and maybe play around with a few different ones. Hopefully this will help.
thanksBe careful! The wrong driver could damage the hardware.I have fixed the problem!
I had reinstalled Windows 2000 on my PC which caused the ERROR. When Windows 2000 is reinstalled, it detects the Analog Devices audio chipset (ADA 1885) but the native driver that is loaded is not appropriate for the chipset and causes the audio to play at the incorrect speed.
To solve the problem install the updated Windows 2000 audio drivers from support.dell.com for your system type. The golden rule is that you should always obtain drivers directly from the hardware vendor where possible. The Windows driver catalogue is, to be honest, a bit of a joke.

Solve : CD-Rom drive?

Answer»

My FAMILY bought a refurbished computer from dell in 2004. We had a cd-burner from our old computer that I wanted to put in the new one so i tried to install it. It didn't work and I was leaving for school so I didn't really care. So i tried to fix it again when i got home and it doesn't even recognize that there's a drive there. Still i really DIDNT care because i wasnt usuing it. But now i'm buying and mp3 player and i want to put my cd's on the computer as well as install the program that comes with the player. So my question is: Why isn't the drive being recognized? How do i get it to be recognized?Have you placed all the cables correctly? And the jumper for master/slave?As a general rule, burners should be set as master on the secondary IDE channel.I connected it the same way I saw the regular drive connected so I'm not exactly SURE about the master/slave thing. Where can I find that?If only one CD is in use, connect it via it's own cable to the secondary IDE channel and set it's jumper to master:

There is a rather DETAILED thread on this on these very FORUMS somewhere. A search for "master" or "slave" from the last couple of months should find it.

Solve : tell me if im right??

Answer»

OK so my other computer the other day the power button GOT STUCK and we managed to get it unstuck. but now when we try to start it up like it will get to the windows loading screen and shut off like if the power was pulled..but i think the problem is with the button because it doesnt always shut off at the loading screen. but my dad is disagreeing with me, he says its a virus, but it only started happening when the button got stuck. if i am right would buying a new case fix the problem?samuraiReign..... So ....ya....like have you like checked to see if like the on /off button is like no good ? .......LOL
Does that pc have a current working up to date anti virus program ? If it has , then it is unlikely that it is infected ....but you never know .
There is a good possibility that the button is defective ........ but it seems to me that a replacement button is a WHOLE lot less than an new case .......... Have you checked the button with a continuity tester ( ohmeter ) ?

dl65
i was playin with the button earlier and im pretty sure the internal part of the button is messed up everything else seems to be fineSounds like button time, then. Do you have the skills to fix this? HAH skills nopeThe button (switch in fact) comes together with the casing.
Pretty hard to get the switch alone, unless you get one from disposed casing.
Anyway I do have one if you need.theres a discound computer parts store a few blocks from me i can probably just get a cheap case thats probably in better condition than mine

thanks allif u have an ohmmeter u can simply test the button, but if u want to buy a new case go for it. i recommend the ones with the LED's everywhere, they look sweet at night .

Solve : Lost disk space?

Answer»

When performing system restore, I find that I have lost about 2GB of disk SPACE when my PC restarts.
Can you tell me how I can go about reclaiming this lost space? Can you think of anything that might account for that change in drive space? Such a change, merely due to System Restore, seems odd.

Anyway, why not USE Windows Disk Cleanup tool and see where you stand? If you want to try some other cleanup tool, I suggest CCleaner. How do you figure you lost 2 gigs of disk space? THere are some computational issues you may not be aware of. yeah id say run ccleaner.

Solve : monitor gone mental?

Answer»

For the last couple of weeks i've had serious booting problems. Everytime i started from a cold boot the *censored* thing would literally flash the POST, ide detection, WINDOWS xp LOADING page and then nothing. Only by hitting reset continually would it start. If i'm in windows and hit restart the pc would restart no problem.
So.....i changed the psu, CMOS battery, video card, changed the RAM, set BIOS to default, uninstalled and regedit programs i no longer need, uninstalled everything i had added to the pc, ran virus checks and no change. It finally gave up the ghost a couple of days ago and so i had to switch to my kids comp.....lo and behold the same *censored* thing happened when i tried to boot up. The comp was working fine until i took over and switched monitors from the kids crt to my lcd. Problem solved it was the monitor but not what i was expecting.
I have a Hansol H750 lcd that unluckily has just gone out of warranty.
Anybody have an idea whats wrong or why its doing this?
Perhaps your lcd monitor is not happy with your settings.
Can you start in safe mode and check your resolution & REFRESH rates?Nope, when the monitor is connected booting goes crazy again and i dont want to wreck the pc by resetting about 50 times just to get it to boot up. OK.. Before you trash your computer by hitting reset over and over.. can you tell us what happens when you boot and hit the F8 key (sometimes F5 key)? Can you get to the menu?Quote

..... Everytime i started from a cold boot the *censored* thing would literally flash the POST, ide detection......
Please explain what you mean by "flash the post" and is that normal behaviour or a symptom? If it's a symptom then the fault is low level and booting to Safe Mode won't achieve anything.

It does sound like it's a monitor hardware fault if it's affecting POST and in that case, there's probably nothing that you can do except consult a TV or computer repair shop.
Maybe your power supply is on its way out? Could just be a coincidence that this happened after installing a new monitor... No assurance however...

FlameI doubt it. The monitor is nothing more than an output device. It should in no way affect the boot process. Unless... for some reason the monitor is being powered off the same power source and is too much for the unit too handle... But again.. I doubt it.

It still SOUNDS like the pc [flashing the POST, IDE detection, Windows loading] is getting past POST and losing it's sync when Windows starts.. just like it always does when it's out of sync. VGA mode will enable the user to get into safe mode. Selecting "Safe Mode" will not.The monitor draws current from the gfx card and to an extent, vice versa. Any overloading of these connections can cause problems.Quote
Enable VGA Mode

Starts Windows 2000 using the basic VGA driver. This mode is useful when you have installed a new driver for your video card that is causing Windows 2000 not to start properly. The basic video driver is always used when you start Windows 2000 in Safe Mode (either Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, or Safe Mode with Command Prompt).

I GUESS XP does it differently, that's strange. :-? :-? :-?

Quote
VGA mode will enable the user to get into safe mode. Selecting "Safe Mode" will not.
And that's even stranger. :-? :-? :-?The screens when i boot up are in this sequence and are literally on screen for about a second
POST
IDE detection
Windows logo start screen
and then the screen is totally blank up to over an hour( thats the longest i have left it to see if it would start on its own).
The kids pc which i am currently on has an integrated graphics whereas the other pc has a seperate one. The kids one works fine with a crt until i switch to the lcd and the same with the other pc.
The other pc had a new psu installed as an attempt to fix the problem and the one i'm currently on has a 500w psu, more than enough to cope with the monitor.

If i hit F8 or any other key safe mode screen literally flashes up and then goes blank on both pc'sthe same if i try to enter BIOS.

I'm at a loss as why it has suddenly started behaving like this.Ok.. one other thought... and this is a really stupid one... But who knows...

Is it possible that the screen is just turned down on brightness and contrast so that when it's activated by windows it goes out?

Just a wild hair thought.Lol its possible, i've pushed the buttons on it so many times i might have inadvertently done that....i'll give it a try when i get home from workok i've checked the settings and nope the brightness and contrast are a-ok

this is really starting to wind me up now

Solve : The problem all in one?

Answer»

All right, I'm going to do it. I've been having a problem, and I've posted the parts of the problem everywhere, now im gonna try and post it all in one. First, i stupidly overclocked my processor and my video card, GUESS i fried them (because monitor LED stayed orange while attempting to boot), so i replaced the mobo and processor. it didnt WORK on the radeon 9550 (the video card i think i fried). so i replaced it with a temporary 32mb ATI RAGE 128 pro ultra. it works. i purchased a ati radeon x1300pro and it has the same problem, (monitor LED stays orange, absolutely NO display). i know it recommends a 350w but my system is not near fully loaded and from the power supply checker thing it says i only need above a 260w to power what i got. i want to PLAY bf2 but i cant on a 32mb. what could it be thats preventing me from booting on a new video card?

specs:
300W power supply
ECS Elitegroup K8T890-A mobo
AMD athlon 64 3200+ 2.0GHz core and FSB
1.25GB of RAM
40gb hard drive
temporary 32mb rage 128 pro ultra
radeon x1300projsut ADD the power supply spec and i will try to figure it out.

Have you verified that your motherboard should support a 2.8 gig processor?Hi thanks for reply,

I used Sisoft Sandra report program & under CPU & BIOS information it read:-

Upgradeability:-

Supported speed(s) 2.2GHz+

With motherboard information that Sisoft Sandra provides you, you should have ENOUGH information to go to the website of the motherboard manufacturer and see exactly what processors are supported by your motherboard.

If, in fact, your motherboard should support that processor, then you may have a bad processor, and that's an issue you'll have to take up with the ebay seller. But I SUSPECT you'll find that what you got is not compatible with what your motherboard takes. Let US know the make and model of the board and we can ADVISE. Just because it fits does NOT mean it will work. Thanks guys, here is my motherboard spec,

Does this help you help me, pleeeeeze

Thanks again. Can you find some other coding in that Sisoft Sandra report that looks like a motherboard model number? SIS-650 appears to be the "chipset" used on a motherboard but not the actual model of motherboard. This is taken from belarc advisor-

Processor a Main Circuit Board b
1.70 gigahertz Intel Pentium 4
8 kilobyte primary memory cache
256 kilobyte secondary memory cache Board: SiS-650
Bus Clock: 100 megahertz
BIOS: Award Software International, Inc. 6.00 PG 03/07/2002We're still missing some info, like the actual motherboard model, but with a 100 Mhz FSB, you are not going to be running a P4 2+ gigahertz processor. Yeah i guess so lol, well I stripped all the information I could from Belarc & Sandra.

Anyhow i`ve just purchased a new motherboard so hopefully I may solve my own problem eh?

Thanks all for your help!

Solve : Monitor Plug?

Answer»

I have gotten a Monitor, and when I plug in the monitor and turn on the computer, the monitor gives me a message saying

"Bad INPUT Signal OR Cable Disconnected OR Power SAVER"

MOVING the mouse does nothing, so its not in power saver.

My only guess is its a cable problem, because its new. But when I examined the cable, it has 3 rows.
1 row with 5 pins -----
1 row with 4 pins ---.-
1 row with 5 pins -----

The period being where there is no pin. On the computer, the plug socket looks like it has 3 rows with 5 pin sockets each

Help please! The plug is probably correct:

There is no connection on pin 9 or pin 4 (Socketside).So....is it the motherboard not sending a signal to the monitor? It may be a break in the cable or a dry JOINT in the plug itself. Try substituting another monitor.thats what we are going to try to do
we are going to use a different monitor to see if it works, and if it doesnt, the computer NEEDS to be sent away i guess for repairs

Solve : 2nd hard drive no drive letter?

Answer»

:-? i have seen this problem on other forums, but nobody has posted the solution. please help.
a my fter upgrading to a new board & cpu (ATHLON 64 3200+ 939 windows xp pro) my second hard drive (diamondmax 160gb) which was working fine in my old system, shows up in bios and device manager correctly, even shows volume name, but does not show in explorer. the jumpers are set right. in the disk management console, it shows as active healthy, but all the options are blanked out except for delete partition.
i can access the drive from norton recovery disk and move or delete files that way and have done so, but i would still like to keep what's there if possible. i have done powermax and everything is fine. i tried uninstalling in device manager & letting windows find it again. it found the hardware no problem, but it still has the same situation. my next step is to remove device again, remove cables, reboot, reconnect cables & see what happens. ANYONE have a real answer? i'm pulling my hair out.what kind of system was your old computer? Was it also an x86 based computer?

Good Info: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/reskit/c12621675.mspx#EFAAthe old system was an athlon xp 1800+ on a socket a. at the point of replacement, the only changed equipment were the mb & cpu. of course i did a reformat & clean install of everything, & did all the windows updates. and i removed cables & rebooted 2x. that didn't work EITHER. now i'm gonna bite the bullet & reformat the drive [smiley=sad.gif]. keeping my fingers crossed.that's what worked. used the powermax to quick format, then in disk management also formatted with volume name. & it's there. unfortunately i was only able to save my vital data, but the rest is reconstructible. You mention "Norton Recovery" and that may be the key to this. What Norton/Symantec applications were involved?i referenced the norton recovery disk that comes with systemworks 2005 or 2006. i used this program to access my drives in a dos-like environment and to see if i could repair the missing drive. i was able to do disk doctor and a mild repair of the disks, but that didn't help either. but the most useful tool was to be able to copy my most important files off the hidden drive and onto my c:\ drive, from which i then copied them to an external hdd. unfortunately, i will have to put all my music files back on at a later date, since i didn't have room on my external drive or the time to upload them. so now i have my drive back.If SystemWorks was previously installed, then I would point the finger very accusingly at that for causing the problem in the first place.Tweakiu? might help - check it out.

Raymanno, systemworks wasn't installed yet. i just reformatted and installed windows from scratch because i got a new mobo & cpu. but a reformat of the drive solved the problem.Hmmmm.... Were the correct services running such as Logical Disk Manager etc?i think i understand what happened, but i was trying to find a solution other than reformatting. the sequence of events leading up to this went as follows:
(i'm laying this out in case other people have the same type of problem)
i was having write memory errors. the only references i found to that led to video card problems. i had an nvidia verto 5200 128mb agp. i was about ready to upgrade, so i bought a radeon 256mb 9250 pci. that didn't solve the problem. then after extensive diagnostics, i found one of my memory CHIPS went bad. i sent it back to the company & replaced it with a good one. it still happened. at about the same time, i got a new lcd monitor. after installing the monitor drivers, every time i wanted to reboot, the computer would shut down (sort of) instead of restarting. so now, figuring that any memory corruption affected windows, i tried sfc to try to repair. that didn't work. i then tried to restore to a good configuration. that didn't work. it said there was a curruption. so now i had to re-install windows. it kept none of my settings and lost my programs. i then tried to restore from my last ghost. that of course was corrupted. nothing fully loaded & everything froze when trying to do anything. then i tried restoring from an older ghost. since that ghost, i had replaced most of my hardware, cd drive, cdrw, video, monitor and some software. at some point after installing the drivers, the freezing would start again. i restored several times & each time i got further in my updates, but just when i thought i was finished, the freezing started again. now i tried to reinstall windows again. this time it put my old version on the d: drive, along with copies of my programs. i erased them.
by this time, i knew i had to reformat, but i figured if i was going to do that, i would do my full upgrade with a new mobo & cpu. the guys i bought the stuff from put the hardware together and when they were ready to boot it up, the power supply died. [smiley=tongue.gif] surprise. that was the cause of all the problems. so now after reinstalling windows, there was no d: drive. ( i also had my updated drivers there).
so now i believe that erasing the version of windows & the stuff i didn't think belonged on that drive is what led windows not to read it correctly. the reformat put back what was needed. i just wish i had more storage ( & time) to save all the extra stuff i had. live & learn.Thank you for that Rox. I was myself attempting to determine a cause so that it may benefit others.i felt i had to detail the cause & solution, because i was almost more frustrated by the lack of answers from everyone, including microsoft & maxtor, than i was by the situation itself. if anyone ever found a solution, they never posted it.

Solve : laptop internet via cellphone connection?Help.?

Answer»

I want to use my Palm Treo cingular connection to ACCESS internet through my laptop -- new LENOVO x60. How can I do this?I guess it depends partly on which Treo? Look in the manual, under "modem". Many phones have an infrared or bluetooth connection which you can use to HOOK them up to your PC/laptop. BROWSING the web this way can be quite expensive though!thanks for your reply. Both have bluetooth and I found a little shareware program to link the internet connection. With cingular I've got $25/month unlimited web access on the treo.

Solve : my router/connection?

Answer»

Hi all
i play games online a lot, and every 2 minutes or so i get a connection interrupted for 2seconds,then it goes back to my normal ping. i timed it and it is a constant time gap. I have the wireless netgear router in my room and its connected to the phone socket. When it was first installed i never had this problem, but it is only recently i have. When i first installed it my ping was 30ms somedays and 200 someddays,it was never constant, but no connection interrputions. Now my ping is 30ms most of the time it connection interrupts. could anyone help me on this matter,thnxwow.. that's a vague explanation...

Is your pc connected DIRECTLY to the wireless router? Or are you using the wireless connection? Is it connected to the modem?

Your ping is just a SMALL indication of what's happening... It could be many things.. Is your connection Cable or DSL? Do you have anything else connected to the Router? If you're using wireless, what kind of adapter do you have on the computer? If it's DSL, do you have filters on all the phones? So many things we need to know...

Thanks.Have you made any changes to your system recently?

Flamei have a netgear router connected to the phone cable. i then have an adapter connected to my computer so its wireless. they are like 30cm apart. i also have my sister on a computer in the other room. i havent done much else to my system. You keep saying your router is connected to the phone cable, but that's not how it works... You should have a modem and an ethernet cable attached between them. Your modem should be Cable or DSL.. and depending on the type of service you have will determine more about why you are having connection issues. But regardless of your type of connection, you should always reboot the modem when you have issues. Can you tell us what type of modem you have? Oh.. and if it's only a foot apart.. why not use an ethernet cable between the computer and the router to eliminate any chance of wireless interference?Quote

You keep saying your router is connected to the phone cable, but that's not how it works...
But that's exactly how it works!
The Netgear he's referring to is an ADSL router, in other words, it has a modem, firewall and switches etc combined.

chrisscotland
What does your firewall tell you?
Are you aware of the Netstat command and what it does?
Have you tried setting up static rather than dynamic IPs?
Who is your ISP?
Oh.. netgear makes a DSL router? Well... My appologies. I'm just trying to get the config so we can start troubleshooting...

OK... So does this router have ethernet ports? If so.. you can TEST the connection on both and compare. But don't forget to reboot. Netgear have been making DSL ROUTERS for years. They're probably the biggest and most famous brand over here.
If it's a newish router it will probably have 4 ethernet and a wap and be similar to this.yep its like tht 1 mate
i use tiscali
i tried doing the ethernet cable from my router to omputer, but it didnt work,i dunno.
i belive it is wireless, becoz i decided to use the original modem i got b4 and there was no ci's

Solve : Bios-Keyboard?

Answer»

Compaq laptop 2500. Posts with no errors but keyboard is totally dead. Posts with no errors even when keyboard is physically detached from computer. Windowsxp also finds a keyboard that in reality is not there and says it works fine. What is going on? How can Bios find a keyboard that is not present?
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Oh, yes. An external keyboard works fine and so does the on-screen keyboard. So your default keyboard will not work... When did this start? Have you made any changes to your system recently? Do you have virus/Spyware protection?

FlameHave you tried uninstalling the mouse/keyboard drivers and software? Reboot without the drivers.. then see if the keyboard is present in Device manager? Thanks to both of you.

Have installed and UNINSTALLED. Have a good anti-virus which is run regularly. Have formatted and installed windows xp pro on a "clean" drive. The new installation of wxp pro "found" a keyboard and installed it.

When reboot after uninstall drivers windows "finds" new hardware - that is not physically present- and installs drivers for a keyboard.

WHY does bios find a keyboard at post when there is no keyboard connected to the computer and says the keyboard is working OK?

Thanks much for your thoughts. If the Internal Keyboard is connected, it will read it.

FlameThe internal keyboard is removed. No external is attached. Are you saying the bios finds the "on screen" keyboard and reports it as if it were either the internal or an exteernal keyboard?

Driving me nuts and showing me how little I really know about posting. This sounds like a keyboard controller error (If onboard) or a keyboard interface error. Either way, it doesn't sound good.you are right. I doesn't sound good.

If it is keyboard controller problem why doesn't bios detect and report the problem on post?It MAY be that an internal flip-flop is stuck or a pullup/pulldown resistor is fried. If that's the case, it simply won't bork because it always believes a keyboard is present and working.Could you simply have a faulty keyboard & the bios is not set to Halt on Keyboard Error?
Of course on the Windows side, anything could happen.Thank you to all.

I think the idea that something may be fried and keeps bios from GETTING a "true report" hits the nail on the head. This is all not a great big problem. Everything else works fine so I think I'll just get a roll-up external kb for the very few times I travel and plug in a regular 101 kb for home use. Wifi is fine, cd burner is fine, everything aok except the darned keyboard. Again, thanks to each of you for your time and thoughts. It may be worth talking to HP/Compaq although in my experience, only for the comedy value.
This an excerpt from a transcript of a recent conversation with them:

Me Hi, I have here in front of me an HP Pavilion that's dead except for the emitting a single but repetitive 10 second beep. This code is undocumented by Phoenix.

Them We can run a hardware scan for you right now sir.

Me How? it's dead.

Them In that case, you have a serious problem with your computer sir.

Me Yes, I'm well aware of that. I was hoping that you could shed some light on the beep code it's emitting.

Them It's undocumented sir

Me I realise that but you are supposedly an experienced HP technician. Have you any idea of where the problem could be?

Them It's probably a hardware problem.

Me I gathered that much! I know that it's a motherboard or processor failure. I got that much from Phoenix. I don't have SUBSTITUTES for either to hand, so would you have any idea as to which has ACTUALLY failed?

Them It seems that you have a fault on the motherboard, or it may be a processor failure.

Me Thank you and goodbye. Thanks for the transcript. Been there and done that. The transcripts from 3 different techs were as ridiculous as the one you posted. I don't think they can either read or listen. Anyhow, there suggestions of what was wrong in my case were painfully ignorant. "Sir, it seems you have a keyboard problem". Well...duh. Thanks for the laugh.

Solve : Panasonic KX-P1624 dot matrix printer?

Answer»

Panasonic KX-P1624 is a dot matrix wide carriage printer. It no LONGER RESPONDS properly to the code for "skip perferations, off". In other words, when I put in via the front buttons the correct sequence of lights, the result is not correct.

PLUS, or because of, when printing landscape, not only does it seem to skip perferations but it also LEAVES blank columns where data should show up.

I am trying to print continuous long (genealogy) charts on the ORDER of 14 inches by 25 feet long.

All help gratefully received.

TerenceT2quirke:

It's a mechanical problem. Check the user manual to see if it is something you can fix yourself. If not, take it to computer repair shop to have it fixed. Better yet, buy a new printer. 8-)

Solve : Big problems?

Answer»

Hi, ok heres the summary of my problem.I bought a new computer to replace an old one and when I put the hard drive Winows XP wouln't start because of a hardware change.Heres the system specs (Don't laugh. )

System 1:
CPU:550mhz Pentium 3
Video: VOODOO 3 (?mb)
RAM:256MB SDRAM
Harddrive:160GB Seagate

System 2:
CPU:XP Athalon ? 1.5GHZ
Video: BFG nVida Geforce 6200 OC 256MB Ram
RAM: 512MB DDR RAM

Ok basically I want to take the hard drive from system 1 and put into system 2.When I do XP goes to blue screen WITH ANY OPTION TO STARTUP WITH (on system2) HOWEVER, Syetem (The original PC, Works just fine with it)

What do I need to do to get this to work ? I have the video drivers CD sitting right beside me, what else ?Nova:

You cannot simply swap a hard drive from one system to another, unless the systems are identical.

You can reinstall Windows XP on the HDD while it is in the new system.

You might not be able to activate Windows XP, as it will DETECT the new motherboard and think it is being installed on a new computer. If this happens, you can call the phone number in the activation window and TELL the Microsoft support tech that you are not doing anything illegal and get the code to activate Windows from her.

DocSo, I need to reinstall my copy of XP after I put the hard drive in the system 2 ? thanks, I feel so stupid seams sometimes I get to worked up over stuff.Just have thought about the obvious. Thanks again man, you really helped. What are you trying to accomplish? If your new computer came with Windows installed and you just want to transfer some files from your old hard drive to the new computer, you don't need to install the old hard drive in the new computer as master and then reinstall windows. If you do this by formatting the old hard drive in the new computer, you'll erase all your old files, anyway.

If you just want to transfer some files from your old hard drive to the new computer, you can install the old drive in the new computer and set the jumpers on it so that it is the slave drive. Then, your new computer will recognize the old hard drive and will see the files on it. It won't run PROGRAMS you had installed on it, but you could open Word files, etc., that you have on the old hard drive.

If you're going to keep the old computer, you might also want to explore networking them together. This will allow file sharing, meaning each computer can files on the other if you mark the files to be "shared". You could also have the two computers share a printer. The best way to network is to get a router. Black:

Solve : A horrible problem with computer?

Answer»

Hi everyone!
For my first post, I'll describe something terrible:

I was playing a game on my WinXPHome computer, and it started freezing up. I hit it on the side, not very hard. :-/ I heard something fall out inside, and the screen went BLANK. I rebooted, and got a PCI card bus error. I figured out that the RAM fell out. I OPENED the case, and spent a few hours trying to put it back inside. It was late, so I covered the case and went to sleep. When I woke up, I realized I was only had to turn the RAM card around and then out it in. I connected all the cables, and turned the computer and monitor on. This is where the real problem started.

The monitor says a message it usually says when the computer is turned off or asleep. However, the light of the CPU working and the Power button was on. I tried checking if there was a monitor CONNECTION problem by removing the monitor plug. Now the monitor said that a cable was unplugged. I tried to connect an optical MOUSE to the USB ports in the back, and in the front, but the red laser wouldn't turn on.

I don't know what to do. This computer had so many important files, and now I can't reach them. Right now, I am typing from my laptop. My plan was to remove the HD of the computer and put it in another computer I own, with WinME. However, I am not sure of how this is done, and need your help and suggestions.

I really appreaciate all your assistance, and will check the FORUMS fervently.

Thank you.Check your video card. If nothing is displaying on the screen then that's a sign that the video card came loose. Check that.

Solve : Stuff to Burn DVD's and CD's?

Answer»

:-/ I'm about a 6 of 10 for computer competence, so please be patient with the new guy here. Thanks.

WHAT I WANT TO DO - Find what equipment, software, drivers, etc to turn my HP Omnibook 6000 into a machine where I can;
1) Burn DVD's from downloads I have on the computer
2) Burn DVD's from existing VHS home videos
3) Make DVD copies of other home DVD's
4) Burn music CD's from downloads or digital or analog sources

WHAT I HAVE - HP OMNIBOOK 6000 with Windows 2000
CPU: 700-MHz Intel Mobile Pentium III
MEMORY: 128MB of PC100 SDRAM standard
MASS STORGAE: 12 GB removable Enhanced-IDE hard drive (about 5.5 GB available)
and 6X-max-speed DVD-ROM drive w/software MPEG-2 decoding
VIDEO: ATI 8 MB of internal RAM
CD/DVD: 6X-DVD-ROM
PORTS: USB
Serial port: 9-pin, 115,200-bps
Parallel port: 25-pin bidirectional ECP and EPP
Video out (standard monitor plug connector)
240 pin PCI connector for docking (I don't have a docking station)
PS/2 keyboard/mouse port; SUPPORTS Y-adapter (f2072W/K only)
Headphone out, line in, microphone in
PC CARD SLOT: One Type III or two Type II PC Card slots

PERFERED SOLUTION (I think) is to end up with RCA jacks at my computer where I can take the outputs from various sources (analog VHS tape player, turn table, DVD player, set top box) and burn DVD's or CD's from these sources AND have a video output from my computer to my VCR player for recording.

What do I need?
Hardware:
Software:
Drivers:

Obviously I want to keep my costs down, but I want a good system that can do what I outlined above.

Thanks for your help and guidance.

mangotelThe preferred solution for the vast majority of what you're trying to would be to invest in a new system. What you have doesn't even begin to meet your requirements. You have any RECOMMENDATIONS on an ecomonic solution? As mentioned, I don't want to go so cheap that it affects the quality enough to be obvious, but I don't need studio quality either.

Heh. There was a time when this kind of spec would have been THOUGHT of as more than adequate... Personally, I would probably try and work with that system, rather than just write it off. On the other hand, you could easily sell this on eBay, and BUY a much better replacement. The additional cost to you would probably be less than the cost of buying a DVD writer and other bits for this laptop.

If you decide to stick with this laptop, try and track down an external DVD re-writer, a USB soundcard, and grab some of the decent freeware out there for this kind of task (Vidomi, DeepBurner, Audacity). You can get all of that hardware second hand reasonably cheaply.DVD burning will really tax this system. I think another would be the way to go, any way you can. 5Gig free diskspace
128Meg memory
8Meg video memory probably shared

This is a joke right? You'd be hard pushed to edit and burn a few jpegs on this. Forget video, it isn't going to happen - Not on this system!

I wouldn't write off the system as it's a handy and probably nifty little tool, but it's just no good for what you are trying to do.

Solve : simple ethernet card quest?

Answer»

So here is my set up. I have a computer DIRECTLY connected to broadband internet. A Linksys router takes a cable to a D-link router and from there a cable goes into the back of another computer(my computer). Here is the problem. For some reason my card does not recognize if have an internet cable plugged into it. Also, seomtimes device manager slaps a yellow caution sign onto the card, but that will go away after I install and reinstall the card. There is another cable going from the back of the D-Link into my playstation and I get online just FINE with the playstation. Any suggestions on how to fix this WOULD be great. Thanks
You probably either have a FAULTY/incompatible ethernet card, or faulty drivers. Try downloading the latest drivers for your ethernet card from the manufacturer's website. If installing them doesn't improve the situation, replacing the network card (quite cheap to do) might. And why two routers? So, you have two routers between your broadband modem and your computer. Is that right?

I believe that's not going to work unless certain changes are made in the settings one or both routers. I don't RECALL the details. I know D-Link has some info on this on their website.

Solve : New hardware problem (Dell PC in our library)?

Answer»

I've gotten a problem of a sort that just started. Whenever I start the Dell Dimension 8200 2.51 Ghz PC we have in our library, the monitor screen stays BLANK, and the keyboard does not function at all. We've got a USB keyboard. No matter which USB port I plug it into, nothing happens. The fans power on properly and everything. Nothing ELSE happens. Can anybody HELP me? That's our main computer! I would hate to have to lose everything!First, have you tried a different monitor with the PC? If so, and still no joy, are you familiar with the insides of a PC, and aware of anti-static precautions? I would start by stripping the PC down to its bare bones - one stick of memory, no hard drive, floppy drive or optical drives, all cards except graphics removed. See if it will boot to the BIOS. Report back.My dad does not want me opening the PC case without him around, so I'll tell him about this, or to check this thread out. Yes, I tried another monitor, and even another keyboard. No result. I'm not sure he'd be willing to do this, but my uncle might. He knows more about computers than anybody else in my family, and may be able to help. I'll report back to you on Sunday. For right now I can't do anything. I'll PM you if my TOPIC goes down too far.Do you have a PS/2 (round plug) keyboard that you can botrrow to test with? We need to findout if the problem is with the USB ports or with the keyboard you are trying to use.

Let us know. I tried a PS/2 keyboard, and no, it didn't work. When I tried the keyboard from the Dell Dimension 8200 on my mom and dad's laptop, the keyboard worked. It's not the keyboard. From what I know, only the fans come on. It seems that the computer is not powering up. If by tomorrow, my uncle cannot get it to boot to the bios with only the basic needs, we'll need a new computer. I do not find it to be a big deal, as the only thing I will lose will be my music files. I had over 500 wave files recorded from my collection of 45s, and I had partially burned them to CD after cleanup. I should have dealt with them earlier. I do not see any problem with having to re-record the records, as it will not bother me. GX1_Man, I'm not so sure what we can do about the Dell desktop. It might be shot as far as I know. The keyboard is never detected no matter which USB port I put it into, whether it be the two in the rear or the two in the front. I'm positive the monitor isn't dead. If all else fails, we'll just get a new desktop computer more powerful than that Dell. We won't be getting a Dell next time. Especially after having PROBLEMS with two other Dells. How about running the diagnostics from the Dell website?

What happened prior to all of this?

Can you boot from a real Windows CD and see if your keyboard works with that?

Has anyone been playing with the BIOS or monkeying around inside the case?

Sometimes a machine just croaks, even Dells, but I don't believe it's ready for the scrap heap. An 8200 is a good machine. If you totally give up on it let me know. The data can be saved. Some model have lights on the motherboard that point to where the problem is as well.

A post on the Dell forums would be a good and free idea also.

http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforumsI recently saw a Dell that was recently exhibiting these same problems. A motherboard battery seems to have cured that one but it is symptomatic of a failing PSU.Edit:

I want to let you know that my Uncle Bill fixed the problem with our Dell Dimension 8200. The problem was with the graphics card, which was caked full of dust and dirt, and the fan on the graphics card was not turning. Things should be back to normal for this PC. I'm using it right now.

Solve : PC can't find Modem?

Answer»

To start with my internet connection went dead so I tried to update the software which didn't work. When trying to dial through the modem (56K) I cant even get the INITIAL beeps. It makes no sound whatsoever. Its a standard INTEL 536EP V.92. I then tried a new modem but the PC doesn't even find it as new hardware. I tried it in a different PCI slot and nothing. I tried another modem and still nothing. I have no idea what is wrong with my PC. Can anyone help?

PC is :
AMD Athlon 1900+
1.60Ghz
256 MB RAM

Op system : Windows XP ProWhich operating system are you USING?

FlameOops, meant to add, operating system is Windows XP Pro.
have you made any changes to your system recently? Have you tried running a System restoration? Have you tried updating drivers for the modem by going to the modem manufacturer's website (YES, I know you can't get on the internet, but just use another computer and TRANSFER the install file).

FlameNot made any major changes and not used the system restore. I still aould have thought adding another modem and booting the computer up it would have found new hardware. Evidently not.How long ago did this happen? System Restore might be a good idea.

FlameAny lightning strikes, power surges or anything that could have damaged the motherboard? Did you try to manually load the drivers in Add and Remove Hardware?

Solve : Confusing...?

Answer»

I'm trying to run Counter Strike Source on my computer, but everytime i go into a server with 10 or more people it lags alot.

My specs are:

Pentium 4 3.2GHz HT 1MB Cache
1GB Ram
256 MB Nvidia 6600 Graphics Card
2MB Internet connection

First of all i thought it was my RAM so i upgraded to 1GB ram from 512MB, that didn't do anything so i decided to swap between a Radeon 9600 and an NVidia 6600, nothing seems to be helping it out. I run CS Source on all the low settings yet it says it shud be running on high settings.

I dunno whether its the graphics cards or not, my friend USES a NVidia Geforce FX 5500 and his works fine.

Any help is welcome.Your system seems fine, nothing should be bottlenecking... have you tried lowering the in game/out of game settings. if you have the graphics set too high that could lag it... and you said it's only with 10 or more people? so it runs SMOOTH with 9 or less people right? All in and out of game graphics settings are set to performance not quality and set to low not high. Well basically it works fine with few people in, but when i try go in a public server that has loads of people in it lags.a lot of people on a server would MEAN the server is under stress. if your hardware upgrades are not helping, or helping up to a point, it is the problem of the server you are playing on. ask some other people on the server about the speed. if they are getting the same kind of performance then i am right (for once )play on a server with about 5 or 6 people. This problems nothing to do with servers, its to do with my computers configuration and setup. My friends run fine on the same servers, we all have around 20-30 latency so its not the connection or the server.

This morning, i turned my PC on played CS on a server with 20 people worked fine for bout 30-40 mins, then it started slowing down. Im starting to fink this is due to a COOLING issue, yet its never happened before. I'll have to open up my computer and check the fans are working properly and their not clogged up with dust or owt.run some temperature monitors or something to, speedfan is good.On a similar topic, although not so much to do with Lag in large servers but to do with graphics cards; my computer had an inbuilt 128mb Intel Chipset Family Express graphics card.
This works perfectly fine at all other times, but when I play Counter Strike: Source online the graphics quality declines massively (although I've never used it with another game).
When I insert another 128mb graphics card into my computer, disabling the inbuilt ONE, the game runs fantastically.

My computer has 512mb of RAM and a 2.66MHz processor. As I say it works fine when insertation of another graphics card (of the same capacity) takes place, but why will the game not perform as well under the inbuilt graphics card?

Any help appriciated. Thank you!!PS. I've reduced the in game and out of game settings to a mimimum. So it can't be that, equally it isn't a cooling issue!Ok mine turned out to be a cooling issue, i cleaned out my CPU fan and heatsink and added 2 more new fans in. It works perfect now. According to a friend my motherboard has no temperature monitors. Is there any other way of getting CPU temperature or something.@Clem,
Yes the inbuilt can prolly run some games fine, np, but when it comes to gaming you just can't beat a good graphics card; even if they have the same amount of memory, there is more to it then gpu memory. plus, you all ready solved the problem: "When I insert another 128mb graphics card into my computer, disabling the inbuilt one, the game runs fantastically." Therefore, insert the graphics card, disable you inbuilt, and voila problem solved. Built-in graphics are just not for gaming, if they can game great, if they can't, don't be surprised

@crazy,
i don't believe your going to get a CPU temp without a sensor... there's prolly something you can get, drive bay wise or something, that can display the temp in the case. this isn't entirely useful, but it could give you an idea at what temp your pc is running. other than that i'm not sure.

Solve : rdware diahelp!?

Answer»

anybody knows where i can get hardware diagrams? all!!!That would depend on exactly what you're looking for and what type it is.

If you're looking for a layout of every piece of hardware in the box, you could (emphasis on COULD) get that INFORMATION from the computer manufacturer's site or PERHAPS tech support can help get you a layout. This is assuming you didn't put it together. If you wanted, say, a diagram of jumpers on your hard drive, you'd need the manual for the drive. If you wanted to know what all the stuff on the motherboard means - good luck, nobody knows. Just kidding. Your motherboard's site should be able to provide this information. The list can go on for a long WAYS, but I'm sure you get what I'm saying. If you're looking for generalities, try a SEARCH for "The Hardware Book". It's a very useful tool which contains info on all sorts of devices and shows NOMENCLATURE and pinouts etc.

Solve : Can n e 1 help me??

Answer»

I was GIVEN an 8/9 yr old PC which had several problems once I got it HOME and plugged in so I had to have a NEW hard-drive fitted.

Got it home again and could not install the internet disk due to numerous errors so took it back in and it all now works (fingers crossed) EXCEPT for the sound/speakers.

If I insert a CD windows media player plays the disk but there is no sound. The same happens with the DVD player (powerDVD). I think there is also a problem downloading/playing clips/music from the internet.

I rang the shop and was informed that the speakers should be plugged into the GREEN holes on the back of the tower. I have checked that this is where they are plugged in, and they are.

Can anybody enlighten me as to what the problem now could be and how to fix it please?Look in control panel and see what sound devices are listed in System/Device Manager. Any yellow exclamation marks?

Is the speaker icon in the system tray (lower right of the screen)? Can you click on it to adjust the volume and make sure it is not muted?

Try other speakers on this machine and try these speakers on another machine to pinpoint where the problem is, if all the above checks out OK. Hi GX1_Man - thanks for responding ,

Just checked and no exclamation marks, just normal looking icons, checked if the speakers were muted and all up high but I don't have another set of computer speakers, I was given this PC for internet use and don't even have a printer yet !What sound device is listed? Did you look in the sound portion of control panel? How about the mute checkbox?

Also, make sure you are plugged into the right hole. Pale green is usually it, if present, but you can try the others. It won't hurt anything.checked all those then changed the socket the WIRE was in and the speakers are now working - THANK YOU!!Thanks for posting back!

Solve : hdd prob?

Answer»

hey i jst obought a new 300gb hdd and ive messed it up, basically i wanna format it so that EVEYTHING is deleted on it, even the operating system, i want to be able to PUT it into another computer and it will recognise it as new? any way to do this/ :-?The machine that you use it on should be the one that you load Windows on. The hardware is just too different.

What happens if you reboot with the WIndows CD in there? It's a pretty simple install, although time consuming. What are the specific problems? What version of Windows? What hardware? Details please.im pretty sure (correct me if i am wrong)

u simply...

1. take out the hd from ur old comp
2. place it in the new comp
3. insert ur windows cd into the cd drive.
4. change the bios to boot the cd drive first
5. ur comp should boot off the cd
6. select format and reinstall (this will wipe the hd and reinstall windows)
Hashim87..... Do not be confused by the two responses ...........
homer ....is just telling you how to format the 300gb drive ........
GX1_Man ...... is telling you that if you are planning on loading the same O/S on two differant machines , you may have issues trying to activate it or pass the WGA ......TEST ........ ( unless both SYSTEMS are similar ) and yes , once you format the HD the other pc will see it as a RAW HARD drive.

dl65 thanks dudes, dl65 answered ma question! Lol can i jst make sure, PC1 is where i got the HDD from, and becus ive swapped so many parts when i start it up it wont ask for a cd to boot from or naything like that,it asks for the time and stuff in bios but afta that a blank screen.
But what i found was once i took the power cable off the HDD it would ask to boot from disk and the windows installation gets to the drive partition stage where obviously it RECOGNISES no HDD as there is none powered. So im assumin that this is where the problem lies. What i wanna do is put PC1's HDD into another PC,lets call it PC2, when the HD is in PC2 and i format it, once i put it back into PC1 will it work as new?

Another way i thought maybe would work is to unpower the HDD in PC1 and wait till drive partition stage, then plug the HDD in, would in recognise it then?Windows should be installed on the machine it is going to run on. There are differences in hardware installation that require this.

If you are being asked for the date when the computer powers on you need to change the CMOS battery.

Sounds like you need to make sure the drive is jumpered correctly and download and run the free diagnostics from the appropriate hard driv maker's site.Hashim87.......I am still not clear on exactly what it is your trying to do ........
Heres what I know based on what you have said .........

You have 2 pc s ..... PC1 and PC2 .........
you have a new Hard drive ( 300 gb ) ...that you messed up .

Excluding the 300 gb HD ( which is messed up ) .......... Does
PC1 have a hard drive installed with a opertating system on it and what o/s is it ?

Does PC1 ....have a second hard drive installed as a slave ?

Does PC2 ...... Excluding the 300 gb HD ( which is messed up ) ........ have a hard drive installed with a operating system on it and what o/s is it ?

Does PC2 ....have a second hard drive installed as a slave ?

Once you clear up the confusion , we can proceed ....... Unless of course your trying to install the same copy of the operating system on both machines....... in which case , unless you have a multimachine license ....it won't be legal ......

Solve : MIDI voices on Chip on Sound Card?

Answer»

Hello.
Can anyone advise if there is any way to TAKE the General MIDI voices from the chip on a sound card and LOAD them into another computer?
I have a sound card that is no longer manufactured (from 1990s) and the General MIDI voices on its chip are far SUPERIOR to those on the sound cards in my newer computers. Is there any way to "save" or "dump" or "retrieve" the voices from a sound card and, for EXAMPLE, save them as wave files, or some type of files that can be used?
THANKS.

Solve : pc wont boot, monitor has 'no signal' displayed?

Answer»

hi,
i was WONDERING if anyone could help me with my problem. whenever i turn my pc on all i get is a 'no signal' message displayed on the monitor but the monitor works on another machine fine.i also have no beeps at POST. i have tried 2 different graphics cards and onboard, got a NEW motherboard (ASUS P4S800-MX SE)cause the repair shop said that the old one was the problem, tried another cpu, tried different RAM, tried different power supply (though p/s was from MINI atx not atx). i think i just about tested everything. can someone please help

/Andyhave you tried putting another monitor on your computer? How old is it and what make/model/type? LCD ? Did you try to reseat the graphics card? What kind is it? What happened prior to this? Did it use to work?thanks for getting back to me. my computer is just under 3yrs old and is a pentium 4 2.8GHz. the monitor is a mitsubishi diamond view, not LCD. my graphics card is an ATI Radeon 9550 256MB but i also tried a Radeon 9200 128MB card. the computer was originally WORKING till a few weeks ago when i wanted to put all my stuff onto another computer so i could format. i was setting up the other machine so i could transfer the stuff and was switching the monitor between machines. i got confused and forgot that mine was the one plugged in to all the cables (ie mouse, keyboard, power, etc) and went to move it out of the way but INSTEAD pulled the cords at the back. everything seemed to be fine until i turned it off and went to turn it on in the morning and thats when the problem happened.

Solve : Possible Power supply failure??

Answer»

Well, to start things off, I just built this computer monday. Its 100% custom.

The parts were all ordered off Newegg.com, and heres a list:

Mobo: Abit KN8 Ultra
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3700+
Video: XFX Nvidia 6800xt 256mb
RAM: 2.5 gigs: 1 kingston 1 gig CHIP, 3 PNY 512mb chips (will be recieving another kingston one gig in a few days so I can run dual channel)
HDD: 1x 250gig Western Digital, formatted with windows XP installed, 1x 200gig Maxtor not formatted or setup yet
Powmax Demon 580w PS
I'm also running a DVD rom drive, and a DVD rw drive.

As far as fans go, I have one fan feeding in from the bottom, 2 blower fans feeding out from my PCI slots, BIG heatsink fan, my mobo has a built in fan on it (maybe on north bridge), and finally I have 2 fans in the very top of my case feeding heat out.

Now my problem. Fresh install of Windows XP, fully updated. Before I installed SP 2, I was having problems with downloads. Whenever I'd download a program through firefox, the program would be corrupt and wouldnt install. However if I downloaded that same program through IE, it would install and run just fine. So I installed SP2, and it seemed to fix the problem most of the time. Along with this problem, I've had a couple times were my computer has completely froze. I've also had about 5-6 times now where I would see the BSOD (blue screen of death error message) and then my computer would restart. This seems to happen randomly. I've had it happen when I've been downloading a program, as well as when I've been in a game. It seems to be maybe a time issue. I installed the 'AbitEQ' program that monitors heat an power problems, and am using the built in error recording feature. The last time it gave me the BSOD, heres what it recorded:

2006/02/22 17:10:45 Warning:=+5V: 5.24V +12V: 11.97V CK804: 1.57V HTV: 1.22V 5VSB: 4.99V

Now I LOOKED through my current settings, and all of those seem to be around what they are at right now when the computer is functioning properly. I'm not quite sure what went wrong.

As far as adaware and viruses go, I shouldnt have either. I downloaded spybot, and I've ran it a couple times and found nothing. I dont have a virus scanner installed yet, but I havent downloaded anything that would be considered 'risky'. As in, I've only downloaded big production programs, such as firefox, steam, etc.

It doesnt seem like the computer is overheating, because everytime an error occurs I feel the fans to see what the temp of air is blowing out, and its usually cool. The only things running hot were my HDD's, and I set them up differently now so they are by the top-most fans, and SPACED apart so they stay cool.

Can anyone tell me what to do? A friend told me to try re-installing windows and using AutoPatcher XP to update XP because the IE microsoft update tool is really buggy.. should I do this?

Thanks for the help!

-Brandon<>

Famous last WORDS. Without SP2 installed and a virus scanner loaded, I wouldn't even dream of connecting to the net. You will get vermin within a few seconds.

I don't know if this is all of the problem (doubtful) but do that first. I would also remove and reseat the RAM and then check the RAM with MemTest (free at www.memtest86.com) and run each stick of RAM solo and then together for a couple of hours.

You can also download and run Everest (also free) to check all temps.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html

Bad RAM, overheating or a poor PSU are the most likely culprits. Was that a fresh and shiny real Windows CD you used?

Let us know what you find out.

How loud is that thing anyway? Yea.. I knew those were gonna be my famous last words. The windows copy I have is a full, legal copy with legal CD key.

Well yesterday RIGHT after posting the above post, my computer errored on me again. Not a second after I posted that LONG mess. Then it did it two other times and I gave up. The last time it did it was RIGHT when I logged in. So I tried booting Ubuntu linux off a live cd to see if it would still error on me in Linux, but for some reason it didnt boot properly.

Then I started, and the comment about windows fialure came up where you pick if you want to use the last settings that work, or run in safe mode, etc. So, I chose safe mode to see if that would do anything. Luckily, no computer problems well in safe mode, thats when I determined that its most likely a virus or spyware since all safemode does is not run any programs at startup. So I reformatted and reinstalled windows, and hopefully this will help things out a bit.. Although I havent had a chance to see if its working better or not.

I was also thinking a possible RAM issue, and I'm going to use those programs you gave me to check out all my parts.

I'll update this if everythings fixed. Thanks for the help so far!

-BrandonKeep us posted on your progress. Alright! I reformatted my computer about 4 times after my last post (all 4 times at once for various stupid screwups), and I fixed my RAM setup so I can have all 3 gigs in dual channel mode and my issue seems to be fixed! I havent seen a BSOD since I reformatted!

Thanks for the help,

Solve : HDD controller?

Answer»

Alright. My problem:

I've recently purchased through AMAZING holiday deals 3 200 gig hard drives and 1 250 gig hard drive. The 250 gig (Western Digital WD2500JB) and one 200 gig (MAXTOR DiamondMax) are currently installed in my computer. The 250 is my main hard drive with windows installed, and the 200 is my storage hard drive. Now I'm looking to add my other 2 200 gig (another Maxtor DiamondMax, and a Seagate Barracuda) hard drives. Also note that these hard drives are Ultra ATA (the two maxtor 200's are Ultra ATA/133, Seagate 200 and the WD 250 are Ultra ATA/100).

I went to a local computer store called digilink and they told me I couldnt add more then 2 hard drives to my computer without getting a raid CONTROLLER, which I thought was BS. I talked to a friend that has a raid setup, and he said I can run up to 3 HDD's stock, and I can't run raid without having all SATA drives. So I looked on Newegg and they have PCI IDE controllers, but they say they can run a raid setup. So now I'm wondering which card I should get? Should I (or can I?) run a raid setup? I'm looking for maximum storage, not a mirroring setup.

Heres a link to my motherboard:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813127222

It says I can run PATA: 2 x ATA100 up to 4 Devices

Would that work for my situation?

Thanks for the help and sorry for the long post!

-BrandonNow tell me again why you want to run RAID at all if maximum storage is the issue?I dont necessarily want to run raid, but it would be nice to have a bit faster setup. Would RAID 0 be possible with my setup? Maximum storage isnt like absolutely necessary, I said that because I dont want mirroring. I guess a RAID 0 striping setup would be optimal.

-BrandonRaid 0 will be faster, but not safer. If you lose one drive, you lose everything. If you choose to use RAID 0, backup, backup, backup! If your motherboard has 2 or more IDE connectors, you can use 4 HDD. You will need more than 2 in order to use 4 HDD and a CD/DVD drive, so an add in card might be necessary, but it doesn't have to be a RAID controller. Drives with the same speed should be on the same IDE cable as master/slave or cable select. Mixing the speed of the drives on the same IDE cable means that it will run at the speed of the slowest drive. Incidentally, if you use RAID, the drives in the array should be identical, or minamally, the same size. A RAID determins usuable capacity by the smallest drive in the array. Mixing sizes will waste capacity.Alright. I just ordered a raid/ide pci card. Based on your help and what I've read I think this is how I'm gonna set it up. My WD 250gig main (with windows) and my seagate 200gig will be attached to my mobo (unfortunately both running at ata 100), while my 2 maxtor 200's will be running in raid 0 through my pci card. I think this will be best. Backups arent an issue cause I have a server on my house NETWORK and the other two hard drives to store IMPORTANT files.

Also, I have a dvd rom drive, and a dvd rw drive so I can't add the other two hdd's to my mobo.

Thanks for the help!

-BrandonSounds good. But your BIOS will probably allow booting from the raid, if desired. You can also get a speed increase by placing the swap file on a different drive from the boot drive.

Solve : New Video Card??

Answer»

I think these are my video cards? Correct?

Are these very good Video Cards? Radeonx300 chipset? I'm planing on playing Elder Scrolls IV when it comes out and was wondering whether these are enough. If these aren't very good anybody have any recomendations? Prices?

EDIT 1: Picture coming along shortly.

EDIT 2: System REQUIREMENTS

Recommended System Requirements:

3 Ghz Intel Pentium 4 or equivalent processor
1 GB System RAM
ATI X800 series, NVIDIA GeForce 6800 series, or higher video card

Minimum System Requirements:

Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows XP 64-bit
512MB System RAM
2 Ghz Intel Pentium 4 or equivalent processor
128MB Direct3D compatible video card and DirectX 9.0 compatible driver;
8x DVD-ROM drive
4.6 GB free hard disk SPACE
DirectX 9.0c (included)
DirectX 8.1 compatible sound card
Keyboard, Mouse

Here is some info:

http://www.atitech.com/products/radeonx300/

Here is a comparison (the video RAM seems less than the more expensive video adapters):

DocThanks for all the info. URW

8-)Chances are, if elder scrolls IV is any kind of a game, you will need a more powerful video card. As far as prices go, you should be looking to spend at least $100-$150. Look for a card with atleast 256Mb Video RAM.

-BrandonThanks, I've decided I probably should get a new card.

Yes, the Elderscrolls IV Oblivion is a game a great game. Look at some of these screenshots here. http://www.elderscrolls.com/art/obliv_pc_screens_01.htm

They are pretty impressive.

Solve : Is this connection allowed??

Answer»

Sorry, the diagram's messy...

I made it myself if you haven't noticed

I guess what i'm asking is if i can connect 2 routers together and still get the internet connection.Hook it up and try, but I very much doubt it! Why the need for the extra router?Well the computer and the xbox are in the same room and i already have the router and instead of buying like a 25 dollar 75' cable i was wondering if i could just buy like a 10' cable.

I know, im cheap.

HahaYou might need a crossover cable between the TWO routers, rather than a straight through cable. I would imagine that would do the trick. A router is basically a hub on STEROIDS, right Backdated?Or do they make Ethernet Splitters?

Because if they do that would probably work right? That wouldn't be very satisfactory. Potentially too many hops from each extremity of the NETWORK. Find someone who can make up a cable for you. It's a pity you're not in the UK - could do it for just a few dollars.Nevermind...

I bought a 3 dollar cable and tried it and it works perfectly. It even seems to go faster.

Thanks though.I decided to use a little bit of imagination on you diagram.

I added a little bit of color.

Solve : My comp is screwed?

Answer»

Ok my computer like 3-4 or maybe 5 months ago I upgraded it from being a dell 2400 and upgraded the psu from 200watts to 480watts and upgraded the mobo to an asrock p4vm800 and put a new gfx card in and started to have bsod's . So I reinstalled windows. Then I couldnt get sp2 omg anyway i dont care about that. My computer started to have bsod's again so I updated all my drivers. Still it was having them so I took it to a shop and had them replace MOTHERBOARD to and MSI, and replaced the psu again, and replaced the case and fans. Ok all was WELL until a month after the new stuff started to mess up again so i reformated it and now it just restarts randomly I have also replaced the drivers so many times. !!!!! GRRRR!
The error on the bsod is either IRQL Not Less Or Equal 0x0A
or 0x08E with the driver being NV4_DISP.DLL PAGE fault in nonpaged area
My hardware specs are: XP PRO SP2 , 480 WATT psu, 2.53 ghz p4, MSI p4m800, nvidia fx 5500Most Dell's have proprietary power supply connectors and mounting adapters, not to mention the orientation of the motherboards in the case can be unique. I am amazed that it works at all.

I would try mounting all of that hardware in a different case for starts. If all of the components are good, I would EXPECT no problems. Is that a legit copy of XP? That's the nimber one reason for people enot loading SP2.

Solve : Installing Two CD Drives?

Answer»

I have tried installing two CD drives on my computer, but for some reason it will not work. I originally had the old drive as the slave, and my newly purchased drive as the master. I then made a connection with the DIGITAL audio cable from my sound card to my new disc drive and connected power to both of them. After all of that, I turned on the computer and the HP recovery screen came up (I have an HP computer) and the screen stayed like that for a few seconds. After about 30 seconds or so, Windows XP booted up normally but I cannot see any of my drives in My Computer. I also cannot see them under the system hardware tab. After that unsuccessful attempt, I tried switching the drives around. I put the new drive under the slave and the old drive under the master. It still wouldn't work. However, I do know that my new drive works because I connected the new drive by itself and it worked just fine. Why isn't both of them connectable on my system? How should I have them configured? Is it just a bad cable or is there SOMETHING ELSE that I'm not doing right? How was the old drive jumpered. They need to either be on cable select (CS) which would make the master the one farthest from the motherboard connection, or one as Master one as Slave. Again, the original connection will let you know how the computer expects things to be set up.

Are the drives recognized in the BIOS? What model HP is this and what OPERATING system?Yeah - you can't just install them. On many PCs you also need to enter the BIOS and ensure that they are recognised there (use the autodetect option).

Solve : PC Capacity?

Answer»

I have to buy one PC (Pentium 4 cost-12000 inr) from other user .
What should i check and how can i check Mem/Speed and others.

Regards,
JayIf you are GOING to PHYSICALLY inspect it you can LOOK in the BIOS and then check in Device Manager if Windows is loaded. You can always TAKE a copy of Belarc advisor (on a floppy) or Everest Home (on a CD) and load if Windows is running as well.

In the cyberworld, you have to trust your seller. Where are you buying this?

Solve : mouse click selection not working?

Answer»

while rebuilding my computer (athlon 64 3200+, win xp sp2, 1024mb ram) and and adding everything back in, i FIND that in several areas the mouse (keymouse md) doesn't seem to be doing the right things. i have the last available drivers, i have tweaked all the available settings in TWEAKUI & the mouse panel, explorer & ie. there doesn't seem to be any support from the manufacturer or windows. here's the story.
these are symtoms of the behavior i'm talking about:
1) i didn't like the latest downloadable version of AIM, so i went to older versions & got 5.9.3861. when i click or double click (my default mouse setting is single click), i can't open a messenger window. i have to actually right click & select
2) in one of my most used programs, wordperfect 11, i can't click & select a whole column in a table. i have to actually drag to select it.
i haven't really had problems anywhere else, (although i seem to remember instances where a click should bring up a context menu, but doesn't) but these are very noticeable, since i use them all the time.Try a normal PS2 mouse and see if that works. If not, it may WELL be TweakUI that's causing your problems - It wouldn't be the first time! Have you made any changes to your system recently? When did this start? Which operating system are you using?

Flameit is a ps2 mouse, i have always used it, even before rebulding my system, using winxp sp2 and it was happenig before i installed tweakuiA little history?
Why the rebuild?
Is this a fresh OS install?
Have you removed the mouse drivers, rebooted & let XP detect & install?been there done that. i had a major crash, i decided that since i had to start from scratch, i would do a hardware upgrade at this point, too. so yes it's a clean install. when i saw that i had a problem, i did uninstall mouse driver, reboot & start again. Is everything showing up OK in your Device Manager & DXdiag?everything SHOWS up FINE. i have no conflicts. and it seems to be working fine for other things. it was just those 2 annoyances. i wonder if it's the version of AIM that i downloaded? it might have been a beta, even tho it's the last before triton beta.
