i have a problem with my hardware on both computers. when i turn on the computers, the monitor nor keyboard works. ive tried different video cards that i have and still the same problem. ive also tried plugging my monitor into the other computer, same problem. any ways to fix this? Not a lot to go on here! Could be lots of different faults. Do any fans start up? Hard drives whirr? Do you get any beeps? Do any lights flash on your keyboard? Etc.Quote

Not a lot to go on here! Could be lots of different faults. Do any fans start up? Hard drives whirr? Do you get any beeps? Do any lights flash on your keyboard? Etc.

Fans start.
Hard drive 'whirrs'
No beeps.
No lights on keyboard.

my theory is that its the processor.
Reduce computer to bare minimum; on stick of memory etc. Then try. Then (if possible) swap parts with known working parts until you find the culprit. It could be something as random as a faulty soundcard that prevents the PC from BOOTING.i recently bought a refurbished motherboard from frys. (yesterday) i dont have any extra available stuff.
but heres one big thing, i bought a new motherboard because i attempted to overclock my processor. it ran for about 2 hours at a normal temperature then boosted crazy, i tried to reboot to my computer to set the processor at a normal clock speed. then, the problem was, it would boot up to only the cpu temperature screen, then go to a blank screen. now it wont even get to that. my monitor LED stays orange instead green.also, i left my computer running as is for a while, then turned it off. i checked the processor cooling grid thing and it was warm as if the processor was working. is it still possible for the CPU do be burned out or FRIED and it still get warm as if it were working?Quote

about the beeps, before i replaced my motherboard it was beeping an awful lot, just little short beeps while trying to boot. (like i said doesnt get past the CPU temperature screen.) it only beeps while booting, once it makes it to the blank black screen, beeping stops.joe_tucker-

You seem to be having a LOT of computer problems.

TELL me this isn't the machine you were wanting to overclock the video card on.
sadly, yes
i did overclock that too.
yes, im an idiot and regret every move i made in overclocking.
but, i learned my lesson. now im just trying to get at least back to normal.again, i did try different video cards with my monitor, and a different monitor on the different cards.
and on my new motherboard theres a cmos jumper to reset or BIOS settings, i did that before booting up.i also have enough money to buy a replacement processor, thats why i was wondering if it was the processor. or for a new video card if needed.joe_tucker.......... What part of the the quote did you neglect to read .......

Be AWARE that overclocking will produce heat ........... So proceed with extreme caution .......... or you will fry things.

We don't offer these suggestions just to hear ourselves talk.........
Hopefully you have learned your lesson ....... BTW how much did you jack up the voltage ?

dl65 just on the ram, 1.6 to 1.7 or something like that. but like i said, i replaced my motherboard AND
reset bios settings just incase.Quote
just on the ram, 1.6 to 1.7 or something like that

We'll hope you didn't cook that as well. Some people like to mess with settings without any thought of what damage they can do. Components are tested to function at certain speeds, frequency, heat, etc. When you alter that, the results can be disastrous. I love posts from folks who want to overclock a new Athlon 3700+, etc. just because they can. Honestly, if that isn't fast enough you have other issues, or too much money. i have an extra stick that i didnt use and i tried it, computer still does the same thing. so i doubt anythings wrong with my ram. it still is possible though.

Solve : Unable to See Harddrive while Saving?

Answer»

Gidday,
I've come across a problem with saving files to my hard drive. No matter what PROGRAM I use, when I open up the 'save' dialogue box and select ‘my computer’ I can’t see my hard drive’s, I can see my CD drive etc. and can save to my hard drive in a roundabout WAY using a shortcut on the desktop but the whole business is really bugging me.

I have tried to system restore but it won’t complete no matter what date I take it back to.

I have an Acer TravelMate 260 Laptop running WINDOWS XP service pack one.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks very much
You need to have service pack 2 and all updates. What are you using for virus/spyware protection? Has it always been this way? If not, what happened prior to this? Do you have a real Windows CD if you need to reinstall? Thanks for your reply.
I will install service pack 2 this AFTERNOON to see if that helps.
I am using Spyware Doctor, Zone Alarm, Ad-Aware, AVG Free edition and some other free spyware programmes.
I recently uninstalled Secretmaker (Popup/spyware program)
I have had all this gear on my system for a while and don't think I added one just before the problem showed up.
I'm sure I will be able to find the Windows CD around here somewhere, how much of a drama is reinstalling windows? Might be a GOOD idea to refresh my system.

Thanks againTo reinnstall, back up all your data files, then insert the Windows CD and restart the machine. When you see "Press any key to boot from CD" press a key. The rest is easy. Be sure and reformat the drive when given the option!

If you don't have drivers for your video, audio, etc. you may want to write down what they are from Control Panel/System.

Solve : AMD 1200 cpu replacement?

Answer»

What is the fastest replacement for my AMD 1200 (socket a, 462 pins, K7 200 bus)? My mobo is a ASUS (sock-a, ATX, a7v133a, via133a). Will a AMD Sempron 2500+ (Thoroughbred 333MHz FSB 256KB L2 Cache Socket A) work? I don't want to upgrade my mobo as I've already invested in memory.Did you not go to the manufacturer's web site and see what that shows?

www.asus.com

It all depends on the board. Period. As much as I love my ASUS mobo, their website sucks. Last time I went there it was pretty much useless. I'll check again. What about this post from the PAST?

http://www.a7vtroubleshooting.com/forum/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=a7v;action=display;num=1108158970

I tried the ASUS website again, except for the forums, they don't list anything this old What I did pull out of some research is my mobo and cpu are rare(because they're old). I think I may try SELLING it (hope for $100) and upgrade to a newer mobo and cpu.

I looked at the new LINK. Yikes! I'll stay as far away as possible from overclocking. THANKS for looking into it.If you need more speed, a new setup seems the best way.

Solve : Screen constantly refreshes on its own!!?

Answer»

NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 4000

256 RAM 3.0 GHZ Pentinum 4

The monitor CONSTANTLY refreshes or blackouts on its own and it's driving me crazy.

Is this a HARDWARE problem? related to power management?

Or is this a software problem?

Or do I have a virus? All of the anti-virus programs say that I don't have a virus.

And last but not least How do I fix it??

Thanks in advance.

Solve : System Failure CPU Overclocking?

Answer»

I do not know how to label this problem, but...
I am dealing with my son's pentium4 computer. It has 1.5G RAM. Recently it started shutting down
w/o warning. Now, it has a ,ajor problem.
When I turn it on, there is no video signal, the monitor is black with the "monitor is working PROPERLY" message. But there is an audio message that says: System failure, CPU overclocking.
I checked the video card, and it is installed properly. It was working LAST week.
I checked that the 2 fans were working, which they are.
Everything looks pretty clean inside. HEAT sinks are spotless.

Any ideas what to do about the system failure issue and overclocking?
Then I can move on to the next step.
Thanks!ezduzit........ Have you asked your Son if he or any of his friends have been overclocking the machine ....... because if they have its quite possible that they have fried part of the system .......... Overclocking is something that if done ...must be done extremely carefully or great misfortune follows .......
Overclocking is done to try and get better response out of a CPU ....... Gamers will do this ......... Dependending on how much they have overclocked it ...it will WORK for a while ...but then Zap .......its toast .
Let us know what he says ......

dl65

My son said it had been overclocked once about a year ago, then set back to normal. The computer has been working well all along. Only in the past month did it start shutting down suddenly.
Is there a way of salvaging this? Where to next?ezduzit....Quote

Is there a way of salvaging this? Where to next?
I really don't know ,except top say that it would help to identify exactly what has failed ..... Can you provide a model mumber and brand name for the mobo and the number of the processor ( we know its a Intel P4 ........)
Is it possible to test the cpu in another pc ? ..... That would be the first THING I would be looking at .

dl65 Quote
My son said it had been overclocked once about a year ago, then set back to normal.

I don' know about that, but you could take it to a shop to get the processor checked out. That would probably be your next stop.

Solve : Have external hard drive but not being recognised?

Please can anyone help me? I have an external hard drive but when i plug it into my computer through the usb port it is connecting but it does not come up in my computer and i cannot access it. When looking at the PROPERTIES for the hard drive it says it is at location: 0. does anyone have any idea how to initialize the hard drive and get it working on my computer??
thanksHas it been formatted? That is required to be seen in Windows. Right click and choose format FAT32 or NTFS, whichever file SYSTEM you are using on your main drive.i cannot even get to it to format it. there is no icon coming up in my computer for me to click on. it's like the drive isn't being recognised even though it's installedHow about some details about the computer, operating system, hard drive make/model, etc.thanks, but problem sloved
thank you for you helpWe are keen to hear how the problem was solved. had to GO to my computer, right click, and click on manage. then the drive tab. In here i found that the DISK had not been initialised. i then right clicked and initialised the disk, partitioning it and formatting the drive. Turns out that as this was a new hard drive therefore this had to be DONE. although, when buying an external hard drive this has normally already been done for you. was an easy thing to do so problem solved!Glad you are up and running!

Solve : p3 processor?

Answer»

I have a dell optiplex gx110 with a pentium 3, 667 mhz processor, and i want to kno what socket it has so that i can upgrade it. How can i find that out? And where exactly is the processor located? I'm not sure if its underneath the metal piece next to the fan or not. Thank YouIf you go to the Dell support site, you can enter your service tag number and find out exactly what was in that computer the day it was shipped and what is in it now, if different.

http://support.dell.com/support/index.aspx?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=bsd

LET us know what you find out. Also on that site are the owners manuals, service manuals, etc. You won't be able to upgrade it very much. What are you trying to accomplish?ok i typed in the service tag, and found out... PROCESSOR, 80526, 667, 256, 133, FIBER CHANNEL, B0 im assuming the 80526 is the type, but i didnt see anything about a socket. and do you know anywhere reliable i can buy a p3 processor?it will either be a slot 1 (long and rectangular with a LARGE heat sink affixed to it) or a socket 370, smaller and square. Did you LOOK at the pictures in the manuals?

A P3 will only go to 1 Ghz, which will not show much of an improvement. eBay has lots of them, but let's determine what you are trying to do, how much RAM, what operating system, etc. There may be a better way to see a performance boost.i got the computer from a friend so i dont have any manuals with it, just the computer. i have windows XP home and i just installed 512Mb of memory, which is the max the motherboard supports. The heat sink is square and about 3 inches long, about an inch deep.Well it either looks like this:

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/opgx110/en/sm/remmt.htm#microprocheat_sink_assy

or this:

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/Systems/opgx110/ens/sm/remmt.htm#mphs_assy

What are you trying to do? (again)ok its the second one, the square one. I want to upgrade it to a 1ghz processor because it is running SLOW now. And i wanted to know if there was a place i could buy them online like a company, i want to buy a new one and i cant trust ebay too well.Yu need to check in the Dell forums and see what the maximum processor this machine can take is. It may be very close to that now. What program needs more horsepower than this?

http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums?category.id=optiplexfor my ipod i have itunes which rips CDS at 4x tops, and i have a converter for movies that converts them so i can put them on my ipod, and it takes 4+ hours to convert a single movie at lowest quality, and for other people only an hour or so at better quality. You would be better off with a faster machine, rather than trying to upgrade this and then finding out it will not do as well as you hope for.

For anyhing else other than this purpose and gaming this machine would do just fine.

You wanted brutally honest didn't you?yea i know itd be easier than upgrading, but i dont want to go out and pay a lot for a whole new setup yet, i just want to have this run a little better than it is. and on the dell forum it gave me the information i needed. the max processor is either 1ghz or 1.2ghz, bu the 1.2 needs an adapter i think, ill just go with the 1ghz.Good luck. Let us know how it turns out!

That Tualatin upgrade is kind of pricey.

Solve : Mouse doesn't work with PS/2 adapter.?

Answer»

I have a friend who fried his computer PWR supply when his power line NEUTRAL broke. It was an old Dell (about 1996 mod). I removed his DRIVES and reinstalled them in an even older tower with a mother board and CPU already mounted. This tower did not have the standard PS/2 connectors for the keyboard and mouse. The mouse is connected to a serial input port with an adapter (9 pin serial port to PS/2). I manage to boot up Windows 95 but I get the message “This computer does not detect the presence of a mouse. Shut down windows to connect a mouse to the PS/2 connector”. And, sure enough, I do not get any response from the mouse. The BIOS is setup with “AWARD SOFTWARE INC” (Now PHEONIX). The CPU is an INTEL 1 (or 486), I have searched through the BIOS setup and chipset setup trying to find a problem with no results. Any suggestions?? My friend has little money and I am trying to keep cost down. I feel the problem is probably very simple but beyond my scope. Thanks for reading this, JimI think Windows 95 requires a driver for a serial mouse.I seem to remember win95 requires a driver for pretty much everything ......

I would concur with Computer_Commando

HOPE that solves your issue

dl65 Thank you guys, that was exactly the problem. I dind't have a mouse driver for Windows 95, but I switched to a trackball and installed it's drivers. Thank's again, jim

Solve : Problem with Video card?

Answer»

I have had a prob with graphics card recently installed (nVidia GeForce 6200 pci) various horizontal 'dashes' apppearing in menus etc. This progressed into failure at start up ...just before the logon screen should appear. I found I could only successfully logon via F8 and choosing 'enable vga mode' eventually the fault progressed to failing even in 'safe mode'.

So I removed the pci card and reinstalled the drivers for the onboard GPU (Geforce 4MX integrated)
The system WOULD now boot successfully in VGA mode only, but in display properties I saw two monitors listed (only one has ever been connected). under display heading they were both listed as connected to the on board GPU.

In device manager I found four monitors connected!

If I disable three of them I can boot the pc but can only view in 800x600 8 BIT mode. any attempt to change these settings crashes the pc.

If I uninstall these extra monitors the pc 'finds new hardware' and reinstalls all of them in turn on start up!

My question really is: How has the removal of what maybe a faulty graphic accelerator card left my system unstable and how do I effectively REMOVE the duplicate monitors from device manager?

If I log on in safe mode as the administrator I don't see the display at all in device manager.Dont know if this will WORK for you, but it did for somone i knew. Do you have another monitor you could install.Did you select which display adaptor you wished to use in your bios? Thanks for the REPLIES (I've been away over the weekend)

No I dont have a second monitor available

I had not altered anything there before the probs started so thought best to leave the bios alone for now (I am not too familiar with the effects of changes there)After another attempt to correct the problem by re installing the Monitor's driver and uninstalling the 'ghost' monitors I now see 3 monitors in 'dislplay properties' and the pc found the ghosts again!

Solve : Backup All Data?

Answer»

Hi, I was wondering how I backup all my data on my computer. My HP Pavilion Notebook had a key break off and HP is going to replace the keyboard free of charge but they said it is my responsibility to back up the data. What would be the easiest way to do this. Here is what they said

I would like to inform you that as the Notebook is under warranty there
is no need to pay any shipping charges.

It is your responsibility to back up the data.

You can backup the data by connecting the hard drive to a similar model.
Also, you can connect the hard drive to any Desktop using notebook to
IDE Adapters and then copy the data of notebook to desktop's hard drive.
Mentobe...... Unless I misread what you posted .....the solution is as stated .....

I am connected to a LAN at my dorm. Is it possible to trasfer all data to my girlfriends gateway laptop??Your data yes. Your Windows and programs no, unless you can use one of the programs like GHOST, TrueImage, Or BootIt NG. None of them are free.

Do you have a shiny Windows CD or a restore CD and all of the programs you were using?I have "Application and Driver Recovery DVD"
Contains software and drivers already installed.

So what about programs like Microsoft OFFICE...??
and how would I tranfer my files to her computer?just run a normal windows backup (backup the whole hard drive system, everything .. hey it might take a while but it will be worthit) save the file to a DVD or your GF's pc across the network (depends on the size of the file) now if HP completely stuff up installing a new keyboard your safe. you can format the hard drive reinstall windows and restore the backup ,, really its quite simple and doesnt have to be complicated. the only thing that might complicate things is the size of the backup file , if its to large you might like to consider a USB external hard driveso do you think HP will interfer with my hardrive and files or do they just say that to save their own butts...Quote

Did Office come loaded on your machine? Is there no Windows CD? Since HP, probably not, and you may have needed to make a restore set when you first got your machine.

You need to be clear on these points, even if that means another phone call to HP.

It may not be an issue with only a keyboard replacement, but they warned you!
Yeah I thought that HP might say that just to cover themselves. My girlfriend BOUGHT Office and it only lets you use it like 4 times and she has already used it like 3...so who knows...Here is what HP said about the Hard Drive but I have no idea how to do it

Thank you for writing back.

During the repair process "your hard drive will be re-imaged if it
fails QUALITY Assurance testing", and in this event you will not have
the opportunity to retrieve your data once the repair is complete.

At this stage, I suggest you to remove the hard drive from the notebook
and keep it with you before sending the notebook as hard drive has
nothing to do with the issue.

I hope this helps.

Help??!!??
bump...I thought we answered this. :-?I just was wondering if it would just be easier to take out my hardrive, like I wont do any damage and as soon as I put it back in, I will be fine right???Yes, but be SURE the machinne is turned off and you are grounded before handling electronic components.

Solve : Multi sound cards / multi speakers?

Answer»

I searched for related issues and didn't see anything to help me so I'm hoping someone knows how to do what I am visualizing in my head... here it goes

I have two sound cards on my computer. I have the built into motherboard sound card and a 7.1 M-Audio Revolution sound card. Both work just fine. I have one set of basic computer speakers. I have successfully set up my computer to play sound on my home stereo and tv, with no problems.

What I want to do is to have certain programs to play on a certain sound card. I want to use my multi-media (ie. DVD movies, windows media) on my TV and home stereo. I want to play my computer games and computer related software through my computer speakers (and headphones cuz the wife doesn't like to listen to Battlefield 2 at full blast =)

I'm looking through windows media and can't see how to select which speakers it goes through. BTW I know both sound cards can be used simutanousely, even when they are being used by the same program. It seems that you should be able to have a sound hardware scheme set up.

My other option (and what I have been doing up to this point) is to hook up one set of speakers to regular speaker outlet and the other set to surround sound outlet on the same video card (the Revolution card). I believe that dimineshes sound quality, and I'm constantly going behind the computer to unplug/replug in my speaker, which I really do not like doing. Also, some programs aren't sound surround quality so I don't get sound at all, which is understandable.

I am running Windows XP

So, does anybody have any ideas, or have you solved this problem already for yourself and wanna help me out... if you respond, I thank you in advance! If you have two sound cards active at one time you will have problems - guaranteed. I think you should choose one and use that. What kind of problems?

I have a program that is used for DJing (I'm a retired DJ but I still like to play it loud at home =). I used this program in a bar I used to work at. It has options for use of two, or more, sound cards. I've done this for years and no problems with the sound coming from two sound cards. One card is used for one channel, the other card is used for other channel. This allows the "mixing" of songs as well as being able to listen to a song through headphones while your live MUSIC continues uninteruppted.

Now if this program can do this with virtually no glitches, why can't other programs do this? Isn't this what microsoft wanted to progress the computer to? Out of the office into the multi-media enviroment?Errr...I'm not sure what Microsoft wanted other than to sell you more software. That is their business.uhhhh, ok, sure.... I guess so, yer the expert...

now, I'm gonna explain my flame. Why would the powers that be want computers stuck in the office? The main living area is the living room... fancy that. However computers are non-aesthetic, so they will probably look different. Computers will take over function of TV, stereo DVD player, gaming center, movies, music, etc etc... read into "ENTERTAINMENT".... why? cuz it sells.... you still need software to RUN this and who is making the biggest progression into this? Microsoft, duhhhh.... don't believe me? Who sells XBox 360??? why is it the biggest, best console gaming device to present date? because you can run all your living room entertainment devices off of the xbox... duhhh.... does microsoft just sell software, no.... so STFU and try making a constructive post.... expert.... anwer my question, don't be a smartass... if you can't answer the question, don't say anything at... especially if it makes you look like an idiotrefresher... why would two soundcards cause trouble as stated in previous post. I listed one example that says that two sound cards can work togather. so is there another reason why it is a bad idea...

or lets go back to my original question... can I run multimedia off of one sound card and computer sounds off the other, and how can I do this?I agree with GX1_ManPhaze....... USUALLY , if there is a integrated sound card ( built in ) and the user chooses to install a better card in a PCI slot ..... it is common practice to DISABLE the built in sound......Either in the device manager or in the bios ...if it will allow it . The same thing would apply to a onboard or integrated vid card ..... Failing to do this usually results in problems of one type or another ..... Now then ....... I don't know the program you used to use and still have....but it's quite possible that it was designed to operate with multi sound cards and has the ability to do internal switching and mixing ...giving you the options you described ....... Perhaps if you had mentioned the app your talking about GX_1 Man may have offered differant advice .
How about giving us the name .
Have a read , I think its describing what you want to do .......
http://www.patmedia.net/ralphmilnes/soundcardpacket/2agw2cards.htm

dl65

Thanks dl65... I read that link and I think its dealing more with a small radio station function... very interesting and I will read up more on it, but I don't think its what I want to do, and plus it looks like an old program.

The name of the program that I'm talking about is VirtualDJ. You can download a copy at thier site, and I highly recommend it for all house parties, it will Beat Mix with an incredible AI-like style that is really amazing! Here is a link to their user manual... hit ctrl-f and punch in "two soundcards" to skip to the appropriate chapter. I know that if you scroll up it says you can run the program on one sound card no prob, but for the true dj, the mix comes with feeling the hardware (ie. the mixboard sound controls) and you just can't achieve a proper mix trying to work it with a mouse, therefore you split the sounds into two channels... I did this for over a year with absolutely no problems so it does work.

Now I want to split my sounds to two different sets of speakers, for two different sets of reasons... I wanna keep my games/computer sounds limited to my computer, and my multimedia to my stereo. The reason for this is that my computer is in the living room, and when I am working on my computer, so as not to disturb others in the house, I listen to my earphones. I have hooked my video card to the tv so I could watch dvds, homemade movies and other stuff on my tv. A lot of DVDs have extra content that you can only access on computer, now I get the best of both. I also host a poker night at my house and I use a program called The Tournament Director, which does wonders for the ease of night. It beeps when blinds go up, but my computer speakers aren't loud enough. Plus the boys like to hear a little rock n roll. Since I used to dj and I ripped all my music to my hard drive, I would like to play that on my stereo. Actually I already do, its just that I have switch cables all the time and THOUGHT it would be better to be able to switch via in windows than physically doing it. These are the reasons for wanting to use two sound cards

Its just i have built a new rig for gamming and have been told that the response time of your monitor is important...is this true? people say 8mm is good for games. How will i find out the response time of the monitor i have? its got no model number or anything on it. CHEERS for any help. Not mm (milimeters), ms (milliseconds). Response time is only an issue with LCD's (flat panels). There is no response time for a CRT, because they are still faster than LCD's

Pixel-response rate: This refers to how quickly a pixel can change colors, measured in milliseconds (ms); the fewer the milliseconds, the faster the pixels can change, reducing the ghosting or streaking effect you might see in a moving or changing image. In GENERAL, manufacturers' specifications rely on best-case scenarios; real-world performance COULD be slower. A maximum of a 12ms-to-15ms response time across the spectrum is required for gaming or viewing television and movies without ghosting or streaking. Thanks so are you saying that this monitor i have is good for gamming? and that my monitor has no response time?. Is that what i have a CRT.Yes, that is a CRT, and OVERALL they are better than LCD's for gaming. Have fun!

Solve : Bottleneck on a new system?

Answer»

I have put together a system with an AMD 3000, 512 RAM and a SATA hard DRIVE. I reinstalled XP from an image yesterday because of the bad lag time. The image only has XP plus all the updates and Office 2003.

Now, only after loading a few standard programs (Mozilla, Norton, etc.) it will even lag when I am typing.

Would any of you have a guess as to where my bottleneck could be?

Is there a program that will help determine where it is?

Any help greatly appreciated! So you basically loaded an image of Windows from one set of hardware onto another set and are having problems? This would not be a surprise, as frequently it doesn't run at all! Some experts can tweak it to working, but I would suggest a test with a clean install of Windows and see if that is enough to fix things. If not, we can go from there.

Is the CPU recognized correctly at boot up? Sometimes jumpers have to be set on the MB or in the BIOS for correct recognition.

Do you have a legal Windows CD to reinstall and test with?Sorry for the confusion. I put the machine together, then made an image. Today, I reloaded the image. All the hardware has stayed the same.

I am using a Gigabyte motherboard (ga-k8nf-9) which I bought thinking it had a good FSB. I'm really stumped as to where the hold-up isAlso, I will check on that processor thing. I just reread your post.

And yes, my copy of XP is legal. I am considering a new reload if I can't figure out a hardware solution.jcrane.....There is several things I would like you to clarify ........
The first is ....... Did you do a clean install of Xp on the new drive initially?
What TYPE of Ram are you using ........? ( speed )
How many sticks of ram are you using ?
If its lagging that bad there is something wrong ........
Are you certain you have the sata HD set up properly and the SATA controller .... http://america.giga-byte.com/MotherBoard/FileList/Manual/manual_sata_raid_os_nforce3_e.pdf

dl65

I looked up the RAM and it is 400 MHz PC3200. I have two sticks of DDR. The board has dual channel RAM technology.

After building the system from Tiger Direct and Dumping Goods, I bought XP off of ebay and installed it clean. Then, (after installing all the drivers), I built an image.

Solve : Mic Trouble?

Answer»

Anyone know why my mic doesn't want to pick-up much of ANYTHING? It's turned on and connected, but when I record you can't hear anything... Why?

FlameThe mic just may be bad. Or, the volume control just could be down to a low level. I would check everything to make sure it is good to go.It looks like everything on the sound is 100%... I'll try to contact the manufacturer... :-/ Any other suggestions?

FlameFlame:

Make sure it is firmly connected to the RCA port. Try running DxDiag: Start | Run | Type dxdiag and click OK. Make sure you have the latest drivers for your operating system installed for your sound card or for the controller on the motherboard.

DocWell, RAPTOR suggested checking the 20 DB option, and that for the most part has fixed the ISSUE... However it's still kind of hard to hear... You'd have to probably turn-up your volume...

FlameMics are cheap. Get a better one!
It's brand new

FlameRead the warranty (if it came with one).

:-/Got plenty of warranty. Two years. I'm not going to cry faulty hardware yet. Maybe I'll E-mail Logitech.... Thanks for your replies! I'll keep EVERYONE posted as to any updates that I might come accross....

Solve : Compatible graphics cards ??

Answer»

Hi everyone, new here and specifically signed up in the hopes that you knowledgable people will be able to offer some assistance !

I'm currently running my pc with:

Intel Celeron 2.4Ghz
ASUS P4R800-VM motherboard with inbuilt ATI Radeon 9100 IGP graphics card (128Mb)
1472 Mb DDR SDRAM

I'm wanting to upgrade my graphics card with a seperate card rather than rely on the inbuilt one which is, as I'm coming to realise, quite outdated now.

I'm LOOKING at buying and adding a 256Mb card with 1.4 Pixel Shading support - I've recently purchased a game that I thought my CURRENT card would just scrape by with, but hasn't.

I've searched the ASUS SITE and support forums to try and FIND out which ATI or NVIDIA cards my motherboard is capable of handling, and I've also searched the sites for the ATI and NVIDIA cards to see if they PROVIDE the information on which motherboards are capable of handling their cards - no one seems to be able to tell me which cards I should go for !

I'm looking at getting either:
NVIDIA GeforceFX 5700/5800/5900/5950 series
NVIDIA Geforce 6200 Turbocache-16
NVIDIA Geforce 6600, GT/6800/6800, GT/6800 Ultra, PCX5900
ATI Radeon 8500/9500/9600/9700/9800/X300/X700/X800/X850

Only problem is, I have no idea (even after a few days researching) which is my best bet.

Any kind soul got any words of wisdom or advice ?

Cheers

JasonOK, I took a chance and purchased an ATI Radeon 9600 with 256MB on board. I meet all the minimum requirements and it's all recognised and setup apart from the memory on it.

Should be 256MB as above....

I've installed all the software and set it all up, but the software I'm wanting to run (Battlefield 2) dosn't run. Using the EA Easy info option the game installs, it's not acknowledging the 9600's RAM.... have I missed something or am I just being excessively stupid ?
EvilJ....... Have you disabled the on board vid card ?
have you visited the ATI site and d/l the latest drivers ?

What do you have your vid resolution set to ?

dl65 Hi !

I disabled the 9100 ATI on the motherboard prior to installing the new 9600. As for the ATI site, there's a ton of stuff on there I've found which I'll D/L now. Resolution is currently at 1280x1024.

Could there be any other problems ? In the "System" info it's showing as apparently having 256MB, but in the game info and other windows areas it's either zero or showing as n/a .... bit concerning !Before installing the new card, did you uninstall the old video drivers that were installed from your disk for the mainboard?

Find your old video device in the device manager and uninstall it there?

Disable your on-board video in the BIOS?

Yeah, I rushed though that post. More info:

Ram:
Size: 512 MB
Brand: PNY

Other stuff it says:
PC3200 Only
DDR400

My first problem was with another ram card (I gave it to my BROTHER and it WORKED) I installed it and my PC would not turn on.

Any other info? Computer specs?
Compuer make/model, or motherboard make/model if home built. Go to www.crucial.com to see what that system nneeds and compare with what you bought.

FYI, Crucial OFFERS guaranteed compatibility, lifetime warranty, reasonable prices and promp shipping.

Either your RAM is not correctly seated, is not the right type, or the motherboard may have restrictions on max amount, etc. There is more to it that just PC3200. Ranman...... How about giving us the make and model of your motherboard ...... That will SIMPLIFY things ......

Solve : Uses for an old pc?

I have an old Optiplex gx150 knocking about after I upgraded to a newer computer.

It has 246mb Ram, p3 (about 800mhz) and is runnung XP PROF. It has NO CD drive, just a floppy drive.

I would like some interesting USES for it, at no extra cost. I thought of a firewall, but I dont have a spare low profile nic card lying about and I dont really need one either, neither do I need a server. I thought about using it to TRYOUT linux but with only a floppy dirve and a 128mb pen drive i have to hand I dont think so.Install a cdrom & linux.
The KDE desktop is nice.Agreed. a CDROM is cheap and is goinng to be required for any meaningful purpose.

Xandros FREE edition would be a good place to star.i would use a spare cdrom that I have but its a micro-desktop and takes the flat pop-out ones like in laptopsYou can get a used CD drive dirt cheap, or get a DVD drive for $20.

I use NERO EXPRESS V5, IF I understand you can't remove some files from a CD you have burnt unless you erase the whole CD?That is correct, unless you have InCD or some other packet writing software installed also. If it's not in the Nero program GROUP, and there is no icon in the lower right corner, you don't.On a CD-R, you CANNOT edit or erase any files.

On a CD-RW, you CAN edit or erase files.

Solve : Overheating?

Answer»

I have an overheating problem with my PC.

Im pretty sure whats happening is the motherboard is overheating and shutting off. After the PC TURNS off the motherboard is extremely hot to TOUCH. It usually only overheats when i run a hardware INTENSE program (computer game). I have tried cleaning the motherboard, mother board FAN, power supply fan, and every other part inside the PC. I even have an external fan blowing on the open PC case, but still the same problem, the PC shuts down about 2 minutes into a intense program.

I was just wondering if I should take my PC to the shop, and if so what is likely the problem and how much will it cost to repair/fix?

Is there anything I should try myself before I take it for repair?

Thanks for your time - OwenFor one, the inside of the computer is supposed to be over 100 degrees. It's supposed to be a bit warm. Two, when you touch the inside of your computer, you always ground the static electricty from your hands, right? Assuming that the motherboard is the issue here, it will cost a fair chunk of change to fix.

FlameQuote

Try starting in safe mode and removing the video drivers with the Device Manager, re-boot into normal mode & let windows re-detect & install drivers for you.
Then update your drivers to the latest from the manufacturer's website and reset your resolution.Yes I was. But I like the idea of reinstalling the drivers. Sounds magnificent. *CROSSES fingers*After Windows installs some drivers for you, you will need to visit the CARD manufacturer's website for the most upgraded drivers.

FlameWell it worked after all thank you very much. I canceled windows form installing and re-installed nVidia and the video CARDS drivers.

Solve : CPU transplant?

Answer»

Greetings, and thank you for taking your time to read this post. I've been assembling a new computer for the past 2 weeks, and I can't wait to get this beast up and running. But I was wondering... is it possible to TAKE my AMD processor off of my HP's motherboard and place it on my MSI K8N Neo4/SLI motherboard without any problems? I would wait until I buy the new processor, but due to the price of the processor that I would like to have it may be awhile. Which also bringsup the question.... would placing the CPU I have now on they new motherboard affect the motherboard in any way when I acquire the new processor and install it? Any response would be appreciated. Thank you once again. MrSniffles05........ Well it would seem to me that if your new mobo will support the existing cpu you have ....you shouldnt have any difficulties....
But refer to your mobo manual ....it wil tell you .

dl65 We can't really advise as you didn't bother to mention what the exising procesor is. Thanks for the replies. But my main concern is still is it safe to take my existing processor, an AMD 3200+, and put it on my new mobo. I just don't want to f**k ANYTHING up and be stuck with a non working computer. Sorry if my post is just frustrating, but I'm a newbie at the whole personally built PC scene. Thanks.

MrSniffles05........ Well as I see it you could tell us what the make and model of your mobo is and the exact model and details for your existing CPU and we could research it and give you a answer ....or you could look at your manual for the new motherboard and see if it will support the existing AMD processor you have ..... However , a quick answer is if the existing cpu is supported by your new mobo ....no damage will be done to your new board if you were to install the existing cpu......given that it is supported by the new motherboard and that's assuming you dont do any damage to either the processor pins or the processor socket on the new board.

dl65 Awesome... I shall take your advice and put it into action. The manual says that the new mobo supports up to AMD 4000+ FX55 or greater CPU, sooooo... I guess that means that my AMD 3200+ is good to go?So... I finally CONVINCED myself to REMOVE my cpu and place it on my new mobo in my new system. And due to yalls responses telling me everything should be fine everything is kicking *censored* like it should be. Thank you all very very much. My music sounds magnificent and its all running without a hitch. I couldn't be happier with my new setup. Thanks once again.... you haven't seen the last of my unfortunately though. One more question, I'm thinking about changing my tower case, mind if I get some feedback on what everyone thinks of the Thermaltake towers?

Solve : Computer won't recognize primary hard drive?

Answer»

I have a Asus A7N8X Deluxe motherboard with a WD 36 gig Raptor SATA HARD drive as primary using SATA pins in motherboard, running Microsoft XP, with service pack 2. I installed a Seagate 160 Ultra ATA/100 in the primary IDE slot and set it up as slave. First the computer would not recognize the Seagate. BIOS wouldn't automatically recognize it either. I finally installed the Seagate Utility Discwizard. It told me that my motherboard wouldn't accept the large size of the Seagate 'do I want to have the utility fix it' (paraphrasing). OK. Then it partitioned the Seagate, but only to 148 gigs. All was well. My computer recognized both hard drives. I then decided to move some files (I am a photographer with hundreds, if not thousands of images) to the Seagate. No problem. Copied and moved over to the new hard drive. I did this all prior to restarting my computer after setting up the Seagate. I then restarted my computer. At the DOS prompt it said there was an error in the OS and wouldn't boot. The BIOS showed that I have no primary hard drive. It SHOWS the Seagate however . I took the Seagate out and the now I can boot up XP. BIOS still shows I have no primary, but it boots and I still see it in My Computer under C drive. However, everytime I put the Seagate back on line it won't let my Raptor boot.
My question is because I have the SATA drive cabled to the motherboard, instead of inline on the wide CABLE to my primary IDE slot with both drives on the wide ribbon, is this somehow overriding my primary? I believe I have all the jumpers in the right spots (master/Raptor/slave/Seagate). I should have copied all my files to the Seagate and then made it my primary, put I screwed up. Now I have irreplacable photos on the Seagate and don't want to lose them. HELP. Thanks up front for any help that you might offer. XP wih SP2 should recognnize the full size of the Seagate if you are using NTFS. Because of the nomenclature of DISC size that 148 gig is the full amounnt of the 160 gig drive. (I'm sure Mac will be along to explain, but that is correct.)

How are the drives set up in he BIOS? What if you put the Seagate on the primary channel and the optical drives on the secondary IDE channel? Be sure the IDE drives are jumpered correctly for how they are located. Thanks for the reply. Both of my CD and CD writer drives are on the secondary IDE channel and jumpered as master and slave and work perfectly. The primary channel has the new Seagate 160 on it only, with the Raptor on the primary SATA drive located on the motherboard. The SATA drive jumper is activated. I believe according to the jumper setup on the Raptor it is designated as master, while the Seagate on the primary IDE channel is designated as slave. (I looked at both carefully) The Raptor has no wide ribbon connector in the back of it to put on the primary channel along with Seagate, only the narrow red cable that attaches to the SATA pin slot. So they are independent of each other on the motherboard. I don't know if the Asus motherboard has a problem identifying the master/slave combination because they are not on the same cable. Does that make sense? Thanks again, Chris

Solve : Changed one cord, monitor not working, boot up prb?

Answer»

Hey.

My system is a:
Pent 4 3.0
Gig of RAM
GeForce 6600GT PCI
The motherboard is a gateway one. I forget the TYPE.
Monitor is a LifesGood brand.

Well, I was trying to disable a firewall on my router, but gave up. (I had to get some work done right at that moment.)

So I unplugged them, and just plugged right into the cable modem.

Well, I had my networking folder OPEN and was just viewing the options, and why my modem wasn't working. Suddenly my router config vanished, then I went to view my normal network connection without the firewall, and it vanished out of the blue.

Figured meh, I'll reboot and see if it will auto config it up again.

So I shut off the computer, and turn it back on.

This is when I have problems, the monitor is stuck in Power Save Analog Mode, and it SEEMS the computer itself isn't fully booting. Theres no light on my mouse showing that the system is working and the monitor is just having problems. The mother board fan is working, and I can feel the warmth from the hard drive. The video card fan is still running as well.

I think I had a problem like this a long time ago, but I forgot how I had the system working again. The network is working with my laptop right now with no problem.

So the questions I have are:
How do I have my monitor realize that my system is ON?
And is there by chance something wrong with the system itself if the mouse light isn't coming on it might not be the monitor but possibley the mother board or the hard drive?

If you need more information, just ask. I've unplugged the hard drive, plugged some new cables in, double checked all the connections, switched video cords between the monitor and system, shut off the computer for a few minutes and turned it back on... I've turned just the monitor on, but it keeps going into power saving mode and I can't access any configuration to see if I can change anything there.

Suggestions?does this machine have 2 video CARDS

ie. one onboard and another ADDON type of vid card

Mobo drivers?Fed,

Thanks for replying. In response to your question, I am using DirectX 9.0c, but I do not see any information regarding my refresh rate in dxdiag. Also, I do not know what MOBO drivers are, so if you could PLEASE explain that to me, that would be appreciated. Again, thank you for your help!

Mobo drivers? Sorry, I didn't notice your video adaptor.

Some things to think about.
Update video & sound drivers from the manufacturer's website and check the game sites for patches. Thanks again for your prompt reply! Yes, I have run the directx tests and they all passed. My monitor refresh rate is 60 Hertz. Yes, I have updated the drivers for sound and video to the latest standards. I have the newest patches for the apps, and the problem persists. I think the answer is inevitable, but I'm in denial right now, I guess... Thanks for the help, though!

What games are you having trouble with? Now this is bizarre... I turned off the machine so I could rearrange the wires for my internet connection, and now it seems to be working fine. I do keep this computer running for days at a time, so I suppose it could be a case of overheating... The problems, btw, occurred with 3D-heavy games, like Guild Wars and various FPS's, but now it seems to be operating properly. I don't understand it...Sometimes you need to re-boot so that changes will take affect, like new drivers.I do understand that. However, I had rebooted several times after the new driver installations, so I suppose that means the graphics card is overheating for some reason. Guess I need to buy another fan, now...

Solve : New CDRW-DVD-r drive, does not work properly?

Answer»

My CDRW drive recently broke on my compaq presario 6000 so I had it taken to a computer repair shop and replaced with a Lite On CDRW/DVD-R drive. they also wiped the harddrive clean for me. Since it's return, the software(nero) will not load on the computer(I run windows XP). Nor will any of my other software like the software that came with my printer. Also the DVD-R drive will not burn CD's and the computer repair man seems to think that my problem lies in my XP program on my computer. He believes if I reinstall the windows XP from a new copy (compaq INSTALLED the first one when it was shipped) that this would fix the problem and from then on everything should work fine. Do you believe this is my problem or is it something more intense and something to do with the DVD-r/cdrw drive itself? the windows XP program WORKED fine before he put this new drive in. Now suddenly he says I have a problem with my XP system. ANY help is greatly appreciated. thanks! ELICIA HOLLYSounds like he's a quack To me, it sounds like he owes you an opearting system, but that's just me. No software will install?

FlameMy HP printer software won't load, my daughter's signlanguage software won't load and none of the software that came with the LITE On drive will load. He says reinstall windows xp but the XP worked fine before he put this equipment in and wiped my drive clean. I don't know that reinstalling windows xp will do me any good. but I don't know where to TURN either. He took it back once and thought maybe the drive itself wasn't any good and replaced it with another one just like it but it did the same thing he says. Now he's pretty much threw up his hands and said Here you go. so I'm not sure what to do next to MAKE this equipment function as it should. How did he "wipe your drive clean"? If all he had to do was replace your optical drive, why aren't all your programs still on the computer? Sounds like he probably reinstalled XP himself after "wiping your drive clean" and did something wrong. May have installed the optical drive improperly or otherwise messed with your hardware.

Reinstalling XP may help if a copy or restore disk came with your computer. You can look your computer up on the manufacturer's web-site ( http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/swPfinder?query=presario+6000&tool=softwareCategory&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en) to see what drivers may need to be downloaded / installed for your computer's built-in hardware if you're not using a factory restore disk that already includes the drivers. Doesn't look like you have too much to lose in giving it a try.

In any case, if the computer worked better when you brought it in than it did when you took it home... this computer repair guy is obviously a quack and a crook. Consider contacting the Better Business Bureau or small claims court if a substantial amount of money was involved (above the price of the new drive which will probably work if installed correctly).

If reinstalling Windows XP doesn't work, or is more than you want to do.... You'll probably have to take it to someone else. Maybe you'll be able to get in writing what the first guy did wrong. Might help you get a refund. I agree with Flame. If XP was installed and working when you brought the machine in... the quack certainly owes you a copy of XP installed and WORKING on your machine. I'd still go elsewhere for repairs to prevent any more damage from being done. If you end up having to pay for XP to be reinstalled... add it to the quack's bill. It actually might be best to take it straight to someone else without trying to reinstall XP yourself. That way, you couldn't possibly be to blame for anything the new repair shop finds wrong.

Sorry to hear about this problem you're having. Nothing worse than the feeling of being so blatantly ripped-off!!! Happened to me more than once.he used the restore disks that came with the computer to restore windows XP to my computer, but he says the XP that compaq put on there must be defective as it won't let him (or me) put nero on there and he's never seen a window's xp not let him put nero on it so reinstalling a new version of windows might fix that problem. why suddenly I can't install my HP printer software that WAS on there before he cleaned everything off is unclear. I plan on calling him today to find out more on that subject as I feel like he's just let me hanging high and dry with a computer part that isn't working correctly and if he were any kind of computer repair man, surely he would have had a copy of windows xp he could have put on my computer to see if that was the problem himself without me being out another $100 after he supposedly fixes the problem. I'm definitely not happy with the results so far and he most definitely won't be working on my computer again or be referred but I sure would like to know the reasons why he says my computer was fine when it came in and now suddenly it's not when all it needed was a new CDR drive and a simple cleaning of clutter. I have had my harddrive cleaned before and not lost everything. this is a first for me. I plan on calling another computer repair place today and getting some opinions from them as to what to do next as well. but this man definitely won't be getting the third chance to make matters worse. Sure would be nice though if he gave a refund on some of this mess he made but in his opinion the part he put in was good, the cleaning was good so it's my operating system that is bad. Funny, it was good too when it came in! :-/Tell him he owes you an operating system. Sounds like he messed up and is too proud or scared to admit it. I think becuase he started a job he shouldn't just blow it off... Lazy... See if anyone else who does computer work in your area can give you a free analysis?

Solve : emachine power up problem?

Answer»

ok so i have this emachine p4 model w4065 that is having some issues. the only way it will power up is if I disconnect the power cord from the tower, wait a few minutes and then plug the cord back into the tower, then it will power up and run somewhat. I have tried other power supplies but i still get the same results. anybody have any suggestions? i would greatly appreciate it.Made any changes to your system recently? When was the last time everything worked fine?

Flamethe person i gotthis emachine from was trying to install a new hard drive in it and got frustrated so they just gave up right in the middle of the process. then they started to TRY to diagnose the problem themselves eventually completely removing everything off the motherboard(pci cards, memory,cpu......) get the picture. I know that the computer runs, or at least it did i have seen this with my own eyes or wouldnt have even taken the chance on not being able to put it back together. *censored* now?RDilling....You didnt SAY , but when you plug it in and it starts up .........and then shuts down ....does it fully load the operating system .........? How long does it remain running....? It's possible that since the cpu was removed .......when it was replaced ......fresh thermal paste wasnt used .......and the MACHINE is shutting down because of the hi temp shutdown.....or the cpu cooling fan isnt working and its shutting down for the same reason .
It's also possible that the front panel wiring isn't right EITHER ........( that wouldnt explain the shutdown) but may be why you have to plug or unplug to get it to start .

dl65 heres some good advise, dont buy emachines. but i did have this happen with an old dell i had, shortly there after, it wouldnt read the hdd, cd drive, or floppy. also it would not show any VIDEO. then i just gutted the old pos and said the heck with old tech. so it may be fixable or may not be.

This may help you .

dl65 As I have read the link does it mean to say that its just normal for my processor to run below the expected speed under windows XP?.... by the way here are the report of my system:

Under GENERAL tab: Pentium® 4 CPU 3.00GHz,
2.00 GHz
256 MB Ram

Under SYSTEM INFORMATION:
Processor: x86 Family 15 Model 3 Stepping 4 genuine Intel ~2005 MHz
Processor: x86 Family 15 Model 3 Stepping 4 genuine Intel ~2005 MHz
Size of RAM won't effect CPU speed.

If the RAM isn't the right speed, the BIOS will slow down the bus speed / CPU.

I suspect the memory is not DDR 266 (PC 2100), which would be what you need for a 533 FSB CPU.I'll try to change my RAM to a higher one, If still nothings HAPPEN hope you guys are still here to help me FIX this. thanx guys What does 'Everest' say?To Fed,

I havent tried Everest yet, but I will and let you know maybe you have some good advice too..This is also you?

Your motherboard

CPU-Z isn't that far off. Provide actual part number for CPU (the one printed on the CPU).

I vote for incorrect BIOS setting. To Fed, Im not sure which one you need to see so I just put all about the CPU

Well... The PC 2700 memory should work. Your CPU multiplier is set at 15 X 133 when it should be set at 23 X 133 in the BIOS. Many times this setting is locked and set automatically according to information from the CPU though. If that's the case, there might be a BIOS update for your mainboard that may help (check the manufacturer's web-site). Maybe support for your particular processor was added later. It's possible the memory is somehow incompatable.

If you can change the multiplier from 15 to 23, that should fix you right up.I'll take it all from you guys... thanx for all the suggestions... I'll post again if I succeed on this.

Solve : What speed is my memory running at so I can upgrad?

Answer»

I am very very confused.

I have a MSI 7046 motheboard, it is a 3.06GHz Pentiunm 4 with a 533MHz FSB. 512Mb RAM

I want to add another 512Mb RAM to my PC.

I have USED PCwizard, Everest, and the Crucial scan tool, and looked in Bios and it says PC3200

Is the current RAM in my PC running at PC3200? or is it running at the slower PC2100 (or even PC2700).

The reason I ask is that I have a spare 512Mb stick of PC2100 in a old PC, I didnt want to put it in as THOUGHT it would slow down too much and not match the bus speeds or whatever.

Can someone please help, what speed is the factory built memory running at?

if you DOWNLOAD CPUz (http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php) This is what it states on the memory page (sorry cant find how to insert an image)

Frequency: 133MHz
FSB:DRAM 1:1

on the CPU page it states
Core SPeed 3059MHz
Multiplier x23
FSB 133MHz
Bus Speed 532MHz

If the current 512Mb speed is only running at PC2100 (although the actual stick can RUN at PC3200) I MAY as well use the stick I have and not have to buy another one.

Basic question is: what speed is the current 512Mb stick inside running? PC2100,PC2700 or PC3200?

If its at it full speed of PC3200 then I need to buy anohter one, if its running at PC2100 beacuse of the speed of the FSB anyway, I will install my spre PC2100.

hope someone can put me out of my misery
thanks
AndyWhy do you think it is PC2100? I never did follow that one. They're all about the same cost, just get the PC3200 that crucial recommends.yeh I would but its just that I already have a 512Mb of PC2100 from an old PC now, so I wouldnt need to buy any if this is what the PC memory is currently running at anyway.

If I have to buy I will, but if the memory in there is at PC2100 anyways (even though it is a PC3200 stick) I will add the stcik of PC2100 I have now and save a bit money

hope you can help
thanks
AndyYour memory is in fact running at PC 2100 speed. You should see an improvement in performance by adding the additional PC 2100 module. Wouldn't need PC 2700 or PC 3200 unless you were overclocking or had an 800 MHz FSB processor installed.

Solve : Powering Unpowered Stereo Speakers?

Answer»

Hi - I wonder if you guys can help me

My old stero blew up a month or so ago and since then i've had its 2 speakers just sitting on the self collecting dust (not connected to anything)

These were unpowered speakers, since they were powered by the Stereo, i want to hook them up to my PC but obviously they'll need to be powered first to get any noise

Does anyone know how i can do this?

They did have a bare wire connection (no plugs, they were clipped in) but i've bought connectors for the ends and put them on (RCA i believe their called - their not the small headphone sized one - next step up, you see all the stereos use them)

Heres my current setup - I'm using my MoBo's onboard sound (its a Gigabyte 8i915p Duo motherboard) which has 8 channel HD Audio using a C-Media 9880 Chip.

I have a set of "Hercules XPS 210" speakers (their first set in this review ).

Really the only fast cheap way i can see of powering them is getting a "Splitter", putting it into the back of the sub/amp of the above speaker set - then attaching the say left Stereo speaker and the left Hercules speaker (repeat for right) - MAIN question is, if i do this does it draw any more power or anything that may/will burn out the sub (or the amp inside the sub)? Or will all the speakers just be GENERALLY lower in volume?

I realise doing it this way will just replicate the same left and right channels that i currently have, i'd love to hook it up as surround using a different channel from the 8ch audio but i dunno if i can do this without buying a $100+ powered external box

Any help would be fantastic - Thanks :-?there is no way to power em, unless you have an amp. for example, if you had a old set of computer speakers with an amp, then u could disconnect the speakers from the amp, and hook ur stereo speakers to it and even then, you wouldn not have much pushing the speakers, and the amp would eventualy blow because there only meant for the speakers they come withIf you hook up two speakers to the output from your subwoofer meant for one speaker... You'll be dangerously lowering the resistance / impedance LOAD of the speaker(s). This is very hard on amplifiers. Amp in the sub probably wouldn't last long.

Best way to power the speakers would be with an old stereo receiver or integrated amplifier you could probably find for cheap. You could hook the sound CARD out to an input on the receiver using a stereo 1/8" plug to two RCA plugs adapter. Plug your extra speakers into the speaker outputs on the receiver. Then, plug your current computer speaker setup into a set of tape-monitor outputs on the receiver, again using the same type of adapter. Would enable using all the speakers at the same time while being powered SEPARATELY. Might even allow for another set of unpowered speakers to be used if the receiver has A and B speaker outputs.Ok thanks guys

Might search around for an old stereo then to power them i have an old 1993 sharp 2.0 stereo, hooked up to two 3 way 60w pioneers, and two two way 160w panasonics, and the stereo puts out more bass than my speakers can handle, so alot of times, old stereos are good.

Solve : Motherboard beeps?

Answer»

I have an old Packard Bell Dimension PC that I use for trying various Linux distros but it seems to have dies very oddly. When I start it up I get the Post screen and can get into the BIOS but after a minute or so it starts beeping, but not the REGULAR bios beeps, they are LIKE an old beep boop of a police car. I have Mandrake on there at the moment and it goes through the loading screens then stops. If you watch the hard drive led it FLASHES in time with the beeps, but the sounds themselves are different lengths and irregular. Having posted a query to the Gigabyte SITE they have told me to get hold of Packerd Bell and that can be more difficult than getting a tree to talk.
I have unplugged all the PERIPHERALS, reset the CMOS, tried differnet SDRAM, graphics card, even mouse and keyboard but nothing seems to work any suggestions?
It is a:
Packard Bell iConnect PC
128MB SDRAM
20 GB Maxtor Quantum Fireball
Creative Labs PCI Graphics Card
AMI Bios
PCI EthernetCould be some kind of warning that the CPU is overheating, the CPU fan isn't turning fast enough, The CPU voltage is wrong? Thanks for that, I am just trying what the Packard Bell forum suggested and reapplying some new thermal paste, I also got a new fan. I will let you know. Thaks for the help.Hope it works out!!

Solve : LCD stretching every resolution 2 full screen HELP?

Answer»

I just got the Gateway 21 inch LCD, and the first day it was fine, but once I played Battlefield 2 a Resolution Reminder screen popped up SAYING would I like to enable it, so I enabled it, now no matter what resolution I choose it ALWAYS STRETCHES THE IMAGE TO FULL SCREEN.... I tried disabling the Resolution Reminder, but this is what it looks like, I am unable to select DISABLE, so THATS my first problem http://support.gateway.com/s/monitor/7005483/7005483su59.shtml

I would just like to be able to choose a resolution and not have it streched across my whole screen.. does anybody know how I can fix this??
I tried EVERYTHING, installing the software that came with the screen, but this seems more like a hardware issue, I mean as u can see in the screen between BACK and UP there should be a SELECT button, but its missing.....
I tried unistalling my Video CARD drivers, and completely removing all the software (the LCD didnt come with any drivers) so I'm stuck now..
help anyone ??Try re-installing battlefield. The game may have a permanent setting with the resolution. Re-installing could return it to its defaults. Also, is your desktop having the same resolution too? If so, check under the program access and defaults, or the control panel with appearance and themes.or contact Gateway as it is still under warranty and this may be a known issue.

Solve : BIOS not displayed after pressing "DEL"?

Answer»

Hi out there!

Recently I needed to change my BIOS settings.

As usual I pressed "DEL" (like I did a thousend times before successfully) at the right time during booting but instead of displaying the BIOS (YES, the blue menu of my AMI BIOS of the K7S5A Elitegroup mainboard to which a standard NVidia GForce 2 GTS AGP graphics adapter is connected) my monitor (standard 15'' TFT monitor from Gericom) only prompted a window saying "VGA MODE not support"

[Special remark: Is this good English???]

Regular remark: This message is also displayed for a very short time during the normal boot procedure but disappears after windows xp is started and continues booting).

So I replaced the graphics card, checked connectors, pressed "DEL" another thousend times without any success, checked the Web but I couldn't find an answer to this problem anywhere :-?

Does anybody have an idea about this problem? I really would be greatful.

Regards

Susifernbedienung03..... I dont know why you were changing the bios , but if you were to SHUTDOWN ........ open up the case and remove the battery ( leave it out for 10 or 15 minutes ) the bios should reset and hopefully you can then replace the battery and then get back into the bios in the normal way .

dl65 Thanks a lot for your hint dl65.

Unfortunately nearly nothing changed after mounting the battery HALF an hour later again (same problem remained). Only the system clock was frozen during that period of time and so the clock went half an hour late after booting again.

For me this behaviour of the clock actually seems to be impossible, because:

- if there is a power supply buffer in addition to the battery (like an electrical condenser) then the clock should not interrupt at all, or

- if the mainboard power supply really is interrupted completely (what the purpose of dismounting the battery for half an hour was) the BIOS setup should be reset and so should bethe clock (meaning that it is reset e.g. at October 29, 2002; 00:00).

So, what caused to clock only to interrupt and not to reset?

So are there any other ideas about my problem out there?

SusiThe only thing I could think of is that maybe your monitor is hooked up using a digital input and your computer doesn't like that for some reason?

Other than that... has to be some bad hardware. No software involved at that point. Would be cheapest and easiest to try another video card first. Maybe you could borrow one or buy a really outdated cheapie somewhere?

Could be that the BIOS is corrupted and reflashing it using the new BIOS + tools from the ECS web-site may help. Flashing your BIOS when things aren't working well can be dangerous though. If something goes wrong, you're done.

Never hurts to test all the hardware you can. I use TuffTEST (the $10.00 version). Tests quite a BIT of your hardware (CPU, memory, hard drives, etc...) There are separate freeware tests alot of people on this site use. Would probably be a good idea to run some tests before attempting to flash the BIOS. Better safe than sorry.

Solve : Connecting Many PC's to one "local" printer?

Answer»

I use 3 PC's in the same room in my home. I have one USB printer and I am wondering if I can use a USB hub to connect all 3 PC's to the same printer as a "local" printer.

I know I could use a wireless network and a printer router but I am curious whether a hard-wired connection would work. I can live with having one PC on at a time.

If I went wireless, can I be connected to a VPN and the printer router at the same time?

I am often USING a VPN connection to a company network via my home wireless network on one of the PC's. Can participate in 2 networks at the same time so I would not have to disconnect from the VPN to connect to the home network (i.e. printer)?

THANKS in advance,

wlelmOkay, I have answered part of my own question. It does not appear that I can be networked to computers (or printers connected to computers) on my home wireless network and the VPN connection to the company network at the same time. Good security practice I suppose.

When I am disconnected from VPN, I can share the printer that is connected by USB to my DESKTOP via the wireless network.

As soon as I connect to VPN from my laptop, I can no longer share the printer. Most of the firewall settings on my company-provided laptop are locked so I don't think I can tweak them.

So that gets me back to the idea of a USB hub / switch. In the really old days you could buy a serial switch so that a printer could be shared or more commonly so you could use one serial port for multiple peripherials without re-cabling every time.

Is there such an animal for USB? I realized after my post that to use a USB hub would REQUIRE it to be installed essentially backward so that one peripherial is connected to multiple PC's.

Does a wireless printer router solve this problem, allowing a printer to be shared without PC to PC networking? I'd like not to have to disconnect from VPN every time I want to print, it's almost easier to move a cable.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

wlelmAnswering my own question some more. A wireless print server might solve the problem but it creates another one (for me anyway). My printer is a printer / scanner / fax.

Wireless printserver will only support printing.

I guess it is back to cables one way or another.

Solve : which computer?? so many!! *swoon*?

Answer»

Hello there

I'm wondering what computer to buy. I live in the UK and here are the specs

pentium 4 or equiv.
1gb ram
dvd/r or better
tft monitor (not bothered about size)

i have a budget of 600 quid savedup from pockt money

Do you have any specific models you would recommend? What will you be using it for? Gaming or internet/wordprocessing? That will decide what you need (besides the budget). And theres the option of building your own. If you know how to.$800-900 would get you a fairly good system here in the U.S. and I think most of the rest of the world.

Rather than recommend a system, my advice is this:

PCs and related hardware values change by the minute. When you're ready to buy, Google for any number of rating services (Cnet, etc) and make a list of which systems are currently high rated in your price range and configuration. Then I'd recommend you search again for local outlets and find the best price for your potential choices.

Factor the advice of others, such as this forum into your list and chances are you will avoid any serious mistakes. You should also read as much of the Forum archives as you can for an idea of what problems folks have and their systems.

Or you could just go down to your PC store and buy the best looking system you can afford, but chances are, you'll end up back on this forum before too long.

The Monitor should be 19" or better for a desktop.

Medion is one which might be worth looking at.

Otherwise an ACER laptop/desktop replacement with a 17" TFT screen is what I should have bought INSTEAD of buying this desktop.

But what do you want to use it for, just to take part in Big Brother's religious communion/communications scam?

Do you need a wafer and a glass of water as well and sit in a cell with your cell-phone 'phoning HOME with ET and the Egyptian Thinkers?

It is only commercial pocket picking.

Or do you have a serious purpose in mind such as RIDDING the World of prostitution, rapists, and pornographic ecclesiastics and their Evil Christmas?
£600 would buy you a decent assault rifle and quite a bit of ammo.I would mainly use it for gaming...possibley the internet when I have saved up for a wireless internet adapter..I don't think the rifle will be required just yet...but no promises.Heh, If you doubled your budget, you'd be able to afford the Dell XPS. Ultimate gaming computer.
Shane about the such high price though...it is a bit...Dell makes good COMPUTERS but their site annoys me...they advertise on tv about a hundred quid less than the final price because they don't include shipping and VAT! arg!

BTW is dell owned by MICROSOFT?BTW about a month ago i purchased a Packard Bell Imedia with p4 and 1gb ram, dvd rw and winXP home. There's a notable difference in the 'feel' of it compared to my old dell one, the dell felt a bit less flimsy but this is generally faster.
What do you think? good or bad choice?

Solve : PC card S video out to PC card S video in question?

Answer»

I have a computer at work on a secure network. It is a mission critical PC operating machinery that is isolated for security and reliability reasons from the main company network that connects internal and external to the internet etc. I need to share the run data screen during operation of the machinery with other users on the wide area network LOCATED in different parts of the country. So the transmit time has to be pretty fast to be useful.

The other day I tried an idea. I installed a nVidia e-GeForce MX4000 VIDEO card in the machinery controls computer and an ATI Wonder Pro video capture card in a common company networked computer. I used an S video cable to connect the two cards, S video signal out from the controls PC run into the S video port of the common PC. The goal was to get the controls machinery operation screen into a common company networked PC so that I can share the data screen via SameTime or MS NET meeting with others on the company network.

The results after much trial and error to optimize the quality of the captured screen was that the captured video on the common PC was a bit FUZZY and slightly out of focus looking. I then tried to share that captured screen on SameTime and MS Net meeting and the result was blank. The captured screen would not show up on the PC I tried to transmit the data to not matter what setting I tried.

My question is, OBVIOUSLY I cannot get this concept to work. Does anyone have any ideas that may help it work.

And is there a better way or products I can get to achieve the same objective of capturing video from one PC to another.

Thanks for the help

Solve : Speaker issue!?

Answer»

Hey guys, all of a sudden, my speakers are making this high-pitch squeel... I plugged in my headphones and it gets a similar sound... Also, when the computer is off, and the speakers are on, there is no sound... So something's up with the computer... What's making this sound? Please help!

FlameOk, THANKS to RAPTOR for some help, I've narrowed it down a bit... It's not the speakers at fault, becuase they work fine on ANOTHER computer. It's not a driver issue, becuase I RAN Norton GoBack, and no changes were made. Now, the only thing I did differently, was that I went under my DESK while talking on the cell phone to plug the phone in... Why that would make a difference, I don't know. Please help if you can. Oh, by the way, I'm using XP Home w/ SP2, no changes made recently, and the card is a Creative Sound Vlaster Audigy 2 ZS ...try re instaling the drivers for the sound card, if that doesnt work, then your sound card may have hardware issuesYeah. I'm looking into the drivers now. Hard to figure out which one is which though... The version numbers are very different... Working on it now. :-/

FlameYou will not belive it... The problem was not that of bad drivers, but was that of my microphone being plugged in! Once I unplugged the microphone, it was fine! How weird is that?! Everything works fine now. Thanks for all suggestions

FlameIt's called feedback Flame, your mic was picking up sound from the speakers. But it was turned off

FlameThat was my first thought!!! Didn't say anything because it sounded too simple!!!Don't over or under estimate me

FlameTurned off you got noise, unplugged you got no noise?
Are you sure the off switch works?Yep it works. For some reason it still gave feedback even though it was on off... It doesn't do it now though... Strange...
