Solve : Printer removal error message?

Answer» HELLO. I am OPERATING an Dell Dimension 2350, Windows XP. I recently successfully installed a new HP printer. But soon thereafter, every time I chose ti Print, the whole window would disappear. Along with one of XPs error message reports. I thought I would UNINSTALL the whole thing and try again. I can't even uninstall it; there are four or five PROGRAMS associated with the printer and I successfully uninstalled THREE of them. I can't remove the last two. When doing so, I receive an error message.

The error 'signature' in the Error Report is: AppName: hpzscr01.exe AppVer: 4.0.0.81 ModName: winspool.drv
ModVer: 5.1.2600.2180 Offset: 000089b4

What does this mean..? Help, if you can. Let me know if you need more info.

Thank you.

Solve : Computer isn't starting?

Answer»

My desktop computer isn't starting up. I have tried reseting it by holding in the BUTTONS, tried plugging it into other outlets. It trys to power on and the fan starts for almost a second and shuts off. you can't hear the hard drive kick on. I tried to reset the cmos but can't remember how to do it with the three pins by my internal battery. It is my DADS computer and i'm not SURE how this started or what he was doing. Thank you.Hi there... I am having a similar problem but mine is a bit worse. No fan or anything. I shut down the computer afte some updates were installed. I have not been able to turn the computer on since! Power button does nothing. I have tried holding it down (for a reset). I have done the same as the previous Newbie, and unplugged it, plugged it in elsewhere, but the power strip it is on is working fine and everything else is getting power. On the back of the unit, the green LED is not on. If I fiddle with the power cord plugged into the unit, the green light flickers (barely, thats the only life I see out of it!). The only other thing I can think of, and I dont even know if this is POSSIBLE, is the power cord, could it have fried? Should I try replacing it, or can anyone think of anything else?
Thank you so much!!

Solve : PCI slot for my WiFi?

Answer»

I have one AGP slot and four PCI. My AGP has the SECOND-biggest board in that box (second only to the motherboard itself). My PCI slots, pre-power-supply-frying, have gon as follows:

PCI 1: 7.1 sound board
PCI 2: Linksys wireless interent
PCI 3: NONE
PCI 4: NONE

After replacing the motherboard, I couldn't GET the WiFi to fit in the PCI 2. This was a headache before, as well. Annoyed, I pluggged it into the third PCI. It fit perfectly. Odd thing is, I can plug other things into PCI 2. It works fine. And it looks the same as PCI's 1, 3, and 4. So what's the magic difference?Probably the angle you are putting it in. Something weird that is up with the slots, or you can go with my solution, the computer is against you.I recommend using the slot that works! As do I, but it seems odd that two perfectly identical slots would accept everything except for the WiFi, which for some reason #2 can't handle. Thing is, this motherboard is brand spankin' new, got it exchanged at Fry's electronics after I blew the other one. So I don't think it's defective... Fry's sells SO MUCH refurbed/returned equipment that I would not expect anything to be new there. Sorry, but it may have been returned for that reason. Ah, whatever. I have two more PCI slots. HMM. Makes me wonder if they are reselling the motherboard, identical to this one, that I took back because the darn thing fried. Just a scary thought.

I do hasten to say that I have yet to return a defective product that wasn't defective as a result of poor usage by me. In other words, the only things I take back there is stuff I screw up. All my computer equipment came from Frys except the hdd and DVD-RW drive. Everything else comes from there, no problems. Yes, sometimes they get returns just because the wrong thing was purchased, BUTI have not been impressed overall, and like I said, a LOT of the stuff is returned or refurbed, whether it is marked that way or not.Sorry to bump this thread again, but I found out the problem.

The WiFi is a tight fit on my motherboard, and the offsets under PCI #2 weren't able to push back enough to get that sucker in. OK. Other cards work there because the fit is looser, but I needed the offset that I had at PCI #3. Figures...So it was a straight out mechanical problem?
Out with the angle grinder & hammer.

Solve : Distorted Headset...?

Answer» OKAY, so.... I was doing a major UPGRADE on my computer, got a new MOBO and Processor. The HD couldn't deal with the HD change, so I reinstalled windows... After reinstalling windows, my USB logitech headset, is completly messed up. The sound is horribly distorted, and when I speak through my mic, it comes out distorted and vibrationy to the PEOPLE listening. Now, I have reinstalled drivers, and codecs 3 or 4 times. I have tried disablind my sound card, so it wouldn't interfere. I tried all new drivers. Diffrent USB slots. Disabiling the mobo sound. I have tried everything... and OF COURSE I have tried turning down the main volume... but, my device volume, and the overall volume bar in Auido properties is the same. so... doesn't HELP much... Someone please help. I have no idea what to do!

Solve : Sound cars and mp3?

Answer»

Hello everyone,

I currently listen to my mp3 songs by connecting my hi-fi amp to the headphone socket/audio out socket on my motherboard. The question I would like to ask is that if I improve my soundcard and buy an expensive one, will the quality of my mp3s sound better from my hi-fi? If so, which cards would people RECOMMEND for good mp3 quality playback

CheersI haven't really investigated different cards, but if you uprgrade, your hi-fi will upgrade too. Research different TYPES of sound cards through google, you may just find a match. Also, make sure you know what kind of sound card you have to make sure it is a worthy upgrade. The quality of the audio output signal is decided by your soundcard, and the quality of the output sound is decided by your amplifier and speaker.

Sound Card Amp/Speaker Result
Bad Bad Bad
Bad Good OK
Good Bad OK
Good Good Good The most important factor for the quality of .mp3 is the bit rate at which it was recorded. 128 bit rate is considered to be CD quality, but it is not exactly. Higher bit rates CREATE larger files but produce better sound. Variable bit rates also produce very good sound. Any reasonably good sound card and speakers should give excellent reproduction.

Solve : Motherboard/CPU Issues??

Answer»

I RECENTLY had some problems with my old Motherboard/CPU and I couldn't figure out why it was doing this.

CPU = AMD Athlon XP 3200+
Mobo = Asus A7V8X-X

Now, the other combo worked GREAT for a few years, and then all of a sudden, I come home from work the other day and my computer is running, but there is nothing displayed. Monitor is working fine, I tested it out on another system, and tested the computer on another monitor which proceeded to make the new monitor display nothing.

All cables were checked, everything was fine.

I chalked it up that when I did my last Thermal Compound change, (which was 3 days before this occurence) that I had messed up somehow and screwed the CPU....So I went to a few forums to ask away.

No motherboard beeps when the computer starts at all.

I decided it was my video card, PURCHASED a new one, same problems.

I then decided it was my motherboard/cpu so I purchased a new one.

Installed it not less then 30 minutes ago, and I'm still having the same problem, I have nothing being displayed on my monitor's, no special characteristics about the computer. No special enhancements.

New equipment is
AMD Athlon 64 3000+
Asus A8V Socket 939 VIA Chipset

I'm going into withdrawl without my computer, and I can't seem to fix it this time. I'm "experienced" with computer knowledge, but only to a point, I've exhausted all my options save for swapping all the components in the computer for new ones. Can anyone tell me why my motherboard has no beeps, my monitor displays nothing.

If it was the RAM, would it not have some Beeps?, I've had RAM problems before, had to buy new ones, but I had beeps then.Tell us about the power supply, including brand name, size, model # and age.

I think it is either the PSU (which is still not funcrtioning correctly), an incorrect build, or a motherboard shorting in the case, in that order.Channel Well Technology (CWT)

Model: ATX-400

400w maximum output.

Roughly 2-3yrs old.

Daily usage, my computer runs 24/7.....I'm the kind that likes to have it always on. No Extra power usages other than a DVD-ROM, Cd-Burner, Western Digital 120GB HD 7000RPM and the motherboard w/ basic externals.

The computer powers up currently, at least that's what it looks like, the CPU fan starts up normally, the motherboard green LED Lights with full potential it seems.

I don't know what else really with size, it fits a standard ATX Fitting case.Erm, Bump up from 3rd page?......still can't figure out what is wrong with it.Swap out the PSU as a test, I thought you would do that.PSU swap I will do tonight when I get home, After that I'm going to connect the HD as a slave to my alternate computer and see if there is some problem with my HD.....but I don't think that would cause a problem with my display.

Just to reclarify my problem.

No display on my monitor, No Motherboard beeps when the computer is turned on.

Fan runs fine on both PSU and CPU, Unsure if HD is starting up.
No USB Power, Unsure of DVD-ROM.

Motherboards were swapped, CPU's were swapped, Cables were rechecked in their proper positions.
RAM was reseated.

PSU is a Channel Well Technology ATX-400 400W, this will be swapped tonight with a 500W, Unsure of Make/Model.

Solve : Camera video (mov) to VCD?

Answer»

Anyone knows an easy way to burn video clips (mov) from a digital CAMERA (Minolta) using a CD burner, into VCD. I have 2 computers with CD burners, but no DVD burner. An old desktop with Win 98SE and an I/O Magic CD burner, and Roxio Easy CD 6; which ask for mpg files. The NEW laptop (TOSHIBA, Win XP) has a built-in CD burner ( don't KNOW what brand or software!); have not tried using it to make VCD yet.

Solve : WESTERN DIGITAL?

i got this new sata HD from Western DIGITAL and my computer doesnt seem to recognize it....

Its plugged in correctly and im not quite sure how to set the jumpers on it because it didnt come with any...A sata doesnt use jumpers. More info on your computer would HELP motherboard...ect.Moldy,

You really NEED to learn how to use Google. Here you go

1) go to www.google.com
2) type in the info you WANT, in this case "install SATA"
3) press enter
4) be amazed at all the internet links you will find. This is the first

http://www.seagate.com/support/kb/disc/howto/sata_install_tshoot.html

here is the full list:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=install+SATA

Have fun googling.... K ill see what i can cook up.....thxdidnt work man it still aint coming up...

My master is an IDE and my slave is the SATA......would that be a problem?Moldy_Kimchee ......Does your mobo support both IDE and SATA drives or do you have a SATA pci adapter card installed ?
Advanced Jumper Settings
Western Digital Serial ATA hard drives ship with a jumper SHUNT in the Default position
(across pins 1 and 2). It is not necessary to move the jumper shunt on the drive for
workstation/desktop use.
Have a read ........
http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread10331.html
The answer is there.

dl65 im sure it supports both...i have 2 SATA slots on my mobo itself and when i recieved my HD it came with no Jumper on it....and ill take a look at the sitedunno it seems like my mobo isnt recognizing the SATA HD at allYou probably need to go into the BIOS and enable SATA. Choose a mixed mode where both the SATA and IDE will function. Should be able to get your SATA drive recognized by the BIOS as IDE 3 (if 1 and 2 are already being used).

Once the drive is recognized by the BIOS (may have to restart once after enabling SATA), you may need to format it with a bootable CD or floppy of tools made with software downloaded from the hard drive manufacturer before Windows will recognize it.I dont see anything about SATA in my BIOS......I should be looking in standard CMOS features right?

One thing though...

My MOBO supports SATA 150 and the one i got is a SATA 3.0gb/s

Would that be a problem?Moldy_Kimchee..... Is your new drive a SATA or a SATA11 ?
can you provide the exact model number of that drive .......

Also please provide the model number and maker of your mobo .

dl65 Heres my HD

http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16822144417

My Mobo is a MSI K8T800 Neo SeriesMy mobo doesnt have a slot for IDE3

My MOBO manual says that i have an IDE slot but i look at the spot where its suppose to be it AINT there on the MOBO

Solve : modem-no dial tone?

Answer»

Just got this laptop from a friend. Acer ASPIRE 1400xc with smartlink 56k modem. Used it but got frustrated coz' of its crawling speed. I installed antispyware, adaware and antivirus softwares and got rid of all its bad stuffs and caught a lot of it too. Now I can't connect to the internet coz' of "no dial tone" message. It's running with XP Home Service Pack 2. Don't know if the port is enabled, it is not displayed on the device manager. Uses Com 3. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. What kind of anti-virus software do you have? My grandpa had the same issure, and I soon learned that the anti-virus was blocking access to the internet. ALSO, make sure you have a phone wire running to the internet. This error message is related with phone line. Check it very carefully...
No Dial Tone
and here's the Test for you.Tried uninstalling my antivirus software (Norton Internet SECURITY), still no luck. I think I its got something to do with IRQ. It uses IRQ 11 and COM 3. From modem properties resources, I can't uncheck the "use automatic settings" box preventing me to change the IRQ channel. Is there any way around to force my modem to use IRQ 4?Contol Panel/Modem/More Info and see what happens.

I have no idea what operating system you are using. Did the modem work before? Did ANYTHING happen to it - power surge, etc.

it was working perfectly well up until the last two months- when i turned my computer on it just didnt start. it keeps making a clicking sound.

ive transferred so many important programs on to it that i cant even do much on my comp if it doesnt work!!

i kinda opened it up even tho i didnt no wot i was doin lol im sure i cud smell summat burning maybe i left it on too long and it overheated?? :-?

i think there was a DRIVER that came with it- but i put all my drivers in a shoebox and theyre not specifically labelled . i tried to stick one in my computer- its like a really small CD with a FILE called driver info on it which says;

(1) SIL680 - Driver for SIL680 chipset (Without RAID Function)

intel pentium III
497 MHz , 256 Mb RAM

The drivers for this device are not installed. Code 28

To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver.

so urrrrr yeh
help is much appreciated anyone!!!

THANKS in advance!

nosh You shouldn't need drivers for it. Is it seen in Windows?

Clicking SOUNDS and burning smells are two ominous signs. If you can access it I would get everything off of it to CD's as soon as possible, and use it at your own risk. Maybe try on another computer. Perhaps that was why it was on eBay?

All hard drives die eventually, and they are not the safest place for a backup. There are some data recovery services, but they are expen$ive.

Solve : 8 year old wiped hard drive?

Answer»

:-?
I have a separate hard DRIVE for my music and videos. My son decided that he wanted to watch a film while i was in the bath!! he of course thought he didn't NEED to ask! I now cannot open the drive. It says that it needs formatting and do i want to do it now, i click no.
His version of what happened is that he tried to turn the volume up, then turned it off and tried to start the film again and as he has no patience probably clicked it lots of times. He says that windows shut down. I cant obtain any further info from him except that he did see a window with a red cross on it! He says that he didn't see the format box.
When i start the pc it says something along the lines of........
F drive type is NTFS
One of your disks needs checking
Fixing critical master file table (MFT) with MFT mirror
Unable to read MFT
Aborting!
I'm running windows XP HOME on my c drive and the f drive doesn't have an operating system on it. Any help would be really appreciated!
The c drive is workin fine and it is still showing that the f drive is still there.Try Last Known Good Configuration at startup. hit F8 before windows sign...
You should have a password if you have such a kid at home Never leave kids ALONE with the computer. Have good Goback software if you do. Norton Goback is good Oh, which operating system are you using by the way?

Flame Have windows XP but it isn't on the f drive, didn't see the point in having an OS for what 'was!!!!!' storage!
Tried the previous config but it wont go back to sat afternoon.....only sat eve! tried sys restore, no joy!
When i go into the f drive properties it doesnt show anything....no amount of hard drive capacity or anything but it does recognise what the actual make of drive it is. Used space & free space says 0 bytes!
The file system it says it's using is RAW? On startup it says it's NTFS?
The device status is that it's working properly!...which it isn't!
I'm not sure if this is entirely childs fault, as a couple of times lately when we went to f drive it asked us if we want to format, it was already formatted so we clicked no. If he clicked yes i assume that it wouldn't still be asking.
Incidently i left him alone with it coz i didn't know he was that sort of boy! Plus it's in the lounge! Will password to to the max in future.
He's also my son......so as far as i'll always be concerned.......'sun will always shine from his behind!!!' Getting the RAW message is a VERY bad sign! If this data is IMPORTANT, contact a data recovery service before you do anything to this drive if the data is important. It's not cheap, though.

Solve : used hard drive install problems?

Answer»

Help!
I have a drive from another computer that I am trying to install in my current computer. I bought an enclosure(with both Ieee1394 & usb2 connections) and hooked it up to the system. It shows up as drive F, but it says that it is unformatted and asks to format the drive. In the hard drive administration tools it shows the drive as "healthy" but only at half of the size that it really is (the drive is about 1/2 full of family photos) The Drive came from a custom built PC that was running W2000 and the new system is a Dell XPS system running XP media edition.
Is there anything I can do to get the computer to "see" the data?
The drive in question is a 72GB Maxtor. I am not too computer savvy but any help would be MOST appreciated.

Thanks!
TomTry it on another computer to see if the problem is with your computer or the new old drive. You could try installing it internally as a slave drive, even if only temporarily, to see whether WINDOWS will recognize it that way, and, if it does, then copy those valuable files to another drive, space permitting.I have now tried the drive on a win 98 computer in the house and a winXP laptop. They both "see" the drive as a Maxtor removable storage device but nothing on it. However, in the XP system looking in the hardrive manager, I can see both the internal drive and the removable-they are both listed as "healthy" but the only difference is the internal drive is designated "fat" and the maxtor is designated "basic" Is this it? do I need to find a computer that is setup (or running Win2k?) to see a drive configured as basic? (whatever that means)
hope this info helps

TomThe only options are FAT (up to 2 gig), FAT32, annd NTFS. There is no 'basic' file system. :-/Thanks,
Well that shows how much I know about hard drives, are these file options compatable? is there a utility or PROGRAM that will convert or read the info on this drive? I have'nt tried installing it inside the computer yet. Should I try to find someone with a win2k computer that I can hook this drive up to?

TomT Wild D:

Windows XP and Windows 2000 both can CREATE and use Basic or Dynamic disks. What these mean is not important. You should check the Windows Disk Management utility to see if the file system (either FAT, FAT32, or NTFS) on the external hard drive is still good:

1. Right-click My Computer
2. Click Manage
3. In the Computer Management console, click Disk Management
4. You should see at least two disks: Disk 0 (which is the hard drive in your computer) and Disk 1 (which might be the hard drive in the USB hard drive enclosure). Both should likely indicate they are Basic disks and Online.
5. Look to the right of Disk 1. Does it indicate the file system is NTFS and is Healthy, or does it indicate the file system is Raw or something else?

Let us know,
Doc

The jumper setting on the hard drive might also be incorrect. Does the documentation that came with the hard drive enclosure indicate the jumper for the drive inside it should be set to master or slave or cable select? Thanks for the input,
This is what I see in the disk management window,
Disk 0 (internal drive) is shown with file system as NTFS,Fat 32 & a fat partition and is listed a under type as basic.
Disk F (maxtor drive in an enclosure) shows the file system spot is Blank and under type is listed as basic.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

all help welcome
Tom
Regarding the jumper settings- The instructions with the drive enclosure wanted it set to master. I tried changing the setting to slave and re-installing the drive in the enclosure. This resulted in the computer not seeing the drive at all, so I changed the jumper back to master(according to the diagram on the top of the drive). I don't have the documentation for the harddrive itself, only the enclosure

HMMM? what could it be?

TomQuote

T. Wildd:

Sorry for taking so long to get back to you. I've worked 35 hours of overtime this pay week (so far!)

Please double check Disk Management. It should be Disk 1, not Disk F, in the lower pane of the console. For example, i have two drives in this computer, so it shows Disk 0 and Disk 1. When i plug a thumb drive in the USB port, Disk Management reports the removable drive as Disk 2.

Did you mean to say Disk 1 has a partition Windows named the F drive? If so, please right-click on drive F and click Properties. In the Properties dialog box, NOTE the type and file system and let us know what both are. Also, let us know if there is another drive letter for Disk 1 and what its type and file system is.

Solve : 1 PC 2 ethernet cards?

Solve : Computer power problem.?

Answer»

My computer randomly stopped working and whenver i turned it on, there would be no CONNECTION between mointor and the desktop. The bios and windows does not boot up. So i TOOK out the battery and replaced it and also resetted my CMOS, and now my computer has weird problem. I can only turn on the computer by PLUGGING in the plug in the back of the computer and only turn it off by unplugging the power. (the power button does not work at all now, but there is still lights on them) Whenever i turn on the computer by plugging it in to the back, there would be also no response on monitor.

Any suggestion fixing this problem?
CPU fried, BIOS problem, CMOS problem, etc

any help would appreciated. rcp1071... Is it possible that the switch on the front of your tower is defective ?
Sound like it may be stuck in the on postion . Are you able to click the start button and then choose shutdown ?

dl65 lol,, no... i had this computer for around 2 years,,, and its manufactured one,, And, THERE IS NO RESPONES on the computer. NO BOOT UP... i cant go to windows...I would try a know working power supply of sufficient wattage to check. If you haven't been monkeying around inside the case, that would be the first thing, then reseat the RAM and make SURE the CPU is snugly in.

What happened prior to all of this?the computer started to freeze so i took out battery to reset cmos, and this all happened

Solve : DVD works, but not audio CD's and CD-Roms?

Answer» HELLO all,

I have a compaq presario 900 notebook with windows xp now this is the problem here... I can view DVD's most of the time but audio CD's and cd-roms don't work. I have looked through a lot of the THREADS on here with similar problems and found that I should go to the device manager and uninstall the dvd/cd-rom and restart the computer. I did all of that and the computer found new HARDWARE and now nothing is playing...help please. So you UNINSTALLED, and then let Windows Automatically reinstall? You probably need more updated drivers than that... Go to the drive manufacturer's website for updated drivers.

Solve : USB flash drive error?

Answer»

I received a SanDisk 4GB flash drive; no matter what machine or Windows OS I try to run it on, work or home, I get the following:
The LED pilot light on the end is a very pale green, instead of the bright green on my other Cruzer flash drive.
On an Me, Win2k or XP machine, it is recognized and the OS advises the drivers were located and I can use the drive.
If I go to My Computer, they all call it a removable disk.
When I attempt to save any files to it, the OS's all advise to insert a blank disc, like the OS's think it is a burner.
If I try to Explore the disk, the OS says to insert a disk.
If I check properties after a right click, the capacity is read as 0GB USED, but 0 GB available.
The flash drive that works has a FAT 32 file system, the one that doesn't work has an unknown file system.
If I attempt to load the SanDisk drivers from their website, all the OS's say the drivers are unnecessary, but I still can't use the drive.
If I attempt to use the Tools section from the Properties, all 3 tell me they can't be used on this drive.
The Hardware tab and Device Manager all report the drive is working correctly; Troubleshooting doesn't work, either.
I even tried to Format the drive (very risky, I know), but the OS's all report the drive can't be formatted.
Is it shot before I even got it warmed up?Quote

I received a SanDisk 4GB flash drive...I even tried to Format the drive (very risky, I know), but the OS's all report the drive can't be formatted...Is it shot before I even got it warmed up?
Very possible it's DOA.
Does it have a tiny lock/unlock switch on it?
Is it unlocked?
Look very carefully. This particular drive does not have a lock/unlock switch and now a second flash drive is doing the same thing. The all report the drive is a burner that does not have a disk and I need to install. I have always used unplug the device from the taskbar to remove the device.sorry, I should say it asks me to insert a blank disk. This issue is also looking similar to the post on an unformatted flash memory that is also in the hardware forum.Raceduck:

I agree with C_C.I thank you all for reading and for your feedback. I will attempt to come up with some kind of solution; maybe I have some new key fobs. :-/
On the other hand, I think I may have stumbled onto the cause for any others that use these DRIVES. I have not previously worried about having speakers for a computer. This one does have them. I wonder if the speaker magnets have disabled these beyond recognition. I didn't think about that when I set them on the desk as I juggled them back and forth for various functions. Just an idea for anyone else.I wonder if the fact that it's happening with a second flash drive might suggest there's a different problem. I would suggest finding another machine to try it on - if it still doesn't work then you can safely assume the drive is no good.I thank all for the assistance. After spending way too much time searching for possible clues, I think I found a couple problems. I was one of many that was snookered on an ebay-advertised 8GB Sony flash drive. Turns out it was a fake and the capacity was spoofed. Once data was written, it wiped out the software, MBR and everything. I had to locate about 5 utilities to CLEAN it up, and low-level format it from the manufacturer of the flash chip. It took nearly a month to discover it is a 64MB flash instead of 8 GB! Live and LEARN.
I still don't know what CAUSED the problem on the 4GB SanDisk, but using similar families of utilities, I recovered that one too. that one is indeed 4GB. If you give me another week or so to remember what I did, I will post the files/utilities and procedures. I found the utilities on Everything USB. There were tons of threads to sort out, though.

Solve : letter assignments to hard drives?

Answer»

I have 2 HDS inside the computer. I have a raid controller that I can slide removeable HDs in 2 bays. The drives inside are C: and D: when I put a HD in one of the bays it assigins it with the letter D: and pushes all others up.
I have
A: floppy C: D: HDs inside CDROMS E: F:

when I put the HDs in the removeable drives I NEED them to be assigned G: H:

any ideas?? :-?Except for the floppy, any permanent storage device will take precedence over any removable storage device. HD's, even externals, are permanent storage. You can try GOING into device manager and ASSIGNING the drive letters manually. It might work, but you could also get some unexpected results. I would start by CHANGING the externals to unused letters like X and Z, then reboot. If the CD's then show the desired letters, change the externals to G and H and reboot again.

Solve : generic cd-rw drive question?

Answer»

On the faceplate of compaq presario model 5wv261, there is a small hole where generally there WOULD be a light. In this hole, there is a PLASTIC pin. Does this pin serve a purpose and, if so, since it's now pushed in level with the faceplate, if it needs to be removed, how does one do so?

(The computer CURRENTLY is COMPLETELY non-functional, so I can't say whether this pin has had any ill effect. At present, the computer instantly turns on when it's plugged in and the monitor shuts down into stand-by. I.e., I have a lot of issues with it, but that's all for another post!)

TIA.

- Mike
mikepisano...... I very much doubt that the ..."plastic pin" ...... has anything to do with your issue ....... However if you keep waking up at night or have
dreams about "plastic pins" ........ Open the case ...... MAKE sure you drain away any static build-up in your body .....and remove the 4 pin power plug and the IDE ( the wide ribbon cable) from the rear of the drive. AND while your inside the case do the following ..... if its full of dust ......use canned air to remove the dust ........then remove and reseat the vid card ( unless its a on- board vid card) and then remove and reseat the ram. Now leave the case open and attempt to power up the pc .......... listen and see if you hear any beeps ........
Look ans see if the CPU cooling fan is running ok and the case fan is working .
Let us know how you make out .
BTW ......the pc will start without the cd-rw connected

Solve : Another computer won't boot up?

Yesterday at WORK I attemped to plug speakers into my computer, I got a SHOCK and computer shut down. When I tried to restart it the monitor looked like it was starting up then went black. Did I fry this computer and if so is there anyway to retrieve the information. [smiley=shocked.gif]Well, until we determine the actual problem, I would remove the hard drive and slave it into ANOTHER machine to BACKUP all the important data. Once the data is safe, we can see if this machine is salvageable. Thanks,

But I wont be touching that computer, I need to CALL the computer guy. I just need to know the odds for my health, my boss is a freak! I would precict that the hard drive will be fine. The other components may be suspect.

Solve : Problem with external Hard drive?

Answer»

I am running on Windows XP professional SP2
I have a Beyond Micro, USB 2.0, 250 GB external Hard drive.
I installed it as anyone would, and I have been using it for about a week so far.
Then one day, I disconnected it and shut it off to cool down, because it had become RATHER hot
then i turned it back on and connected it again, and it wouldnt be detected by my computer.
it wouldnt show up in device manager or in disk management.
i tried restarting my computer etc. and nothing would happen
any ideas people? :-/Try it on another computer to see if the problem is the hard drive or the computer. It's probably the former unfortunately. :-/hmm didnt work on my brothers computer
oh and please explain what this "former" is
:-/The problems were either the hard drive or the computer. Former refers to the FIRST possibility, which is the hard drive. YOu seem to have confirmed the offending item.

I am absolutely NOT impressed with external hard drives, as they are not a safe SPOT for storage of critical files. Look around the board for LOTS of problems and disasters.is there a possible solution to get the hd working again?
i have about 40 gigs of anime on the thing...

edit
i bought the thing off of tigerdirect. TD CLAIMED that the HD was new but when it arrived, it had scratches and some paint was peeling a little.
maybe that could be part of the problem?
it was obviously usedIf it is within the warranty term I would contact them. If it is beyond that, you may be SOL,except for being a little wiser.

They have been very good with a few defective product returns for me, and I don't hesitate to shop there.

Solve : DOS sound on I945pa board?

Answer»

I have been tring to make a system that would run DOS but still had an eye to future upgrade. I have been able to setup a multi boot machine with winxp and dos. How ever I have not had any luck getting DOS setup for sound. I have a PCI Soundblaster 16 installed. After trying unsucesfully to set up DOS drivers from several different locations I used an IRQ sniffing program to find the IRQ of the sound card. It would seem that my Aopen I945pa puts my sound card on IRQ 9 wich is a no go for dos programs as they don't have an option higher that irq 7. Looking in the bios I can find no way of manualy setting IRQ's on this board. Hope someone can help, as this seems to be my last option to get DOS up and running on this machine.Check out your SB drivers. You should have drivers for "legasy" support, which ENABLE the card under DOS.I just have an old system that runs DOS and it works great without any tweaking, etc. Trying to make the latest and greatest backward compatible can be a real headache and is less likely to work with each passing day. I would suggest investing $20-30 in an older system. Just boot to DOS and reinstall the sound card under DOS.When booted to dos the drivers won't load because they cannot detect the sound card on the irq or io port.Do you have CDrom drivers loading under DOS? Insert the SB disk and run the setup.None of the program files on the disk can be run in DOS mode. Because I am running a processor faster than 2.1 I am UNABLE to install WIN 95 or 98.So far all sb16 drivers I have downloaded that will run in DOS mode cannot find my sound card on any of the available IO ports listed by the install software. The card works PERFECTLY under winXP how ever so I know it is not a hardware problum. If you have the motherboard documentation see if it has a PCI/ISA shared slot. If so, move the card to that slot. Thanks for the feed back. I think I've about given up with it. I think I'll just make getting dos up and running on an older 800 system my NEXT project. haveing issues with some games now as well wich I suspect is related to memory and processor speeds. Be well, and thanks again. What is the exact model number of the SB card? Is it a card or on board sound? Look in windows device manager and see what it is listed as. Sometimes DOS games only need the SET Blaster= line in the autoexec.bat
SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 T3 P330 H6 E620
The P330 is only needed if the card has midi capabilties and the E620 is only needed if it is a AWE32. The H6 is needed by SB16 cards. All the other parameters are general defaults that most sound cards use.

Solve : Screen goes blank, computer stops during game?

Answer»

This message is actually on behalf of my brother:

While he's playing particular computer games (Warcraft, Dungeon Lords) the monitor goes BLANK or occasionally displays distorted vertical bands of colour, and stays that way until my brother reboots. Sometimes when the monitor is blank, the music from the game can still be heard for a few minutes, but then shuts down as well. The computer was purchased as individual components and assembled by him, and seems to function fine in all other respects. And curiously, this problem never happens when he plays Starcraft.

Here's his specs:

AMD Athalon PROCESSOR, 1.1 Ghrtz
MSI motherboard (he doesn't remember any of the specs for this - it's about 4 years old)
256 RADEON ATI graphics card
1 Gig RAM
Windows XP HOME Edition

Any idea what could be causing this? Thanks!

It sounds like he needs to update his video card drivers.

Flameor just play Starcraft. He's had Starcraft for too long...he's getting a little tired of it.

But a foolproof suggestion, nontheless.

He's gonna try the driver thing.

Solve : Bad hard drive? or bad motherboard??

Answer»

I decided to make this computer, but for insurance I hired somebody to intall it all. It has responded badly since day 1. The last time I got it back it worked for a week, then yesterday System Mechanic called for a system scan, and when it rebooted all it would get was the black screen, mothboard diagnosis, and then the blue screen, from which it refused to budge.

I RESEATED he memory and disconnected eveything to TEST the motherboard and still it wouldn't go past the blue screen. So I ran System Mechanic's drive scrubber, then the 6 start up disks from MICROSOFT, and the tried to installed the windows XP home CD. It gave me log in choices, none of which worked of course because I had scrubbed it. But there I am now, with the XP Home CD in the Drive , whose blue light is on, but when I boot up it won't load the CD.

Do I have a bad hard drive or a bad motherboard?

Solve : Installed new hardware, WinXP won't start?

Answer»

Hello. Please read it all, especially those experienced PC builders.

I just a while ago installed these new components in my PC (this is the second SYSTEM I'm building):

Asus A8N-E mobo
Nexus NX5000 500W PSU
Athlon 64 3500+ bulk + Zalman CNPS7700AlCu cooler
Sapphire Radeon X800 GTO2
An 80mm case fan

The problem seems to be that Windows XP won't start. I recently reinstalled it just to have a fresh start with all the new hardware and all. It didn't have any problems booting before I installed the new hardware, so I don't think it's about the Windows itself, but the hardware, although I'm not sure what about it.

I'm positive that I installed power cables correctly to all components. I also have the extra power cable to Asus mobo installed. My GTO2 doesn't require extra power as it takes it through the mobo. I also have all fans working correctly when I start up. It possibly couldn't be anything in the power department then?
My IDE config: I have a 120gb HDD with Windows set as Primary Master, 80gb storage HDD set as Primary Slave and DVD-Rom set as Secondary Master. As I didn't buy any new HDD's or anything, I don't think that the problem is with the jumpers in them. I haven't touched them.

The first time I powered it up I had FORGOT to insert the extra power cable to the mobo and my GTO2 wasn't working because of that, so I couldn't see what was happening the first time I powered. I just enforced it to shut down.

The second time I powered up, I had all correctly set up (I think), but it said in one of the system loading screens that "CMOS checksum error. Setting defaults". So apparently there was something with the BIOS and it set the BIOS default settings...?

Anyway, it asked me if I want to continue (F1) or go to setup (DEL). I WENT to setup then to see if everything's correct to me (I'm not really an expert but I know something). I didn't change anything and quit, but then it made the startup beep again, and I was in the part where it asks if I want to continue or go to setup.
I continued, and it took me to a screen which informed me that Windows didn't start up correctly, and it asked me if I want to start Windows normally, choose the last working config or go to safe mode. I tried all of them and none of them worked. At some point it stopped showing the checksum error, and instead started showing a Asus screen with option to go to setup, if you're fast.
Also, if I choose to try to load Windows, there's a quick flash of a blue screen with half a screen of white (or grey?) text right before it restarts again. Apparently, it's an error report, right? I've managed to catch the word "CORRUPTION" or was it "corrupted" from it.

What could the problem actually be then? I have the memory sticks set correctly (2x512mb in A1 and B1 slots for Dual-Channel). None of my components is overheating - according to BIOS my CPU temp is at 35-40C and mobo temp at ~45C.

Could it possibly be that the CMOS checksum error doesn't actually have anything to do with Windows not starting? Could it be that the problem is actually in Windows?
Or are they definately related?

Windows not starting would probably indicate to not being able to access the harddrive that it's located in, right? But what can be done, I'm pretty sure the jumpers and the cables are correctly set in the harddrives, they've always worked before.

Thanks for any help.

:-?hi, try swapping your memory sticks round or just use 1, double check U cables and jumper settings, remove any hardware u dont need sound card, modem etc make sure u are booting from cd in bios then try loading up from there, and see how you go on, check you graphics card and check for updates for your mother board let us no how you go onEnter the BIOS and load the failsafe defaults, save and exit. If the BIOS still reports a checksum error, then it's likely to have been corrupted by the power lead omission.

A reinstall of XP would not only be advisable but almost certainly necessary after fitting a new motherboard!A cruc1al question, did you do a clean install of XP to your HDD then proceed to add all the new hardware after that, or did you add the hardware & then install XP?
My guess is the first option and if so XP will not be happy.

Solve : start-up problem-missing or corrupt file?

I had a babysitter at my home yesterday and I noticed that my computer was turned off when I got home (which is unusual because she uses the computer for her school work/internet searches). Now my computer will not boot (not sure if correct term??) correctly. The screen shows the following:
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

The computer is about 5-6 years old. Not sure if I even have the correct start-up disks for this thing. Any help on repairing this thing would be greatly appreciated.Angela:

SYSTEM is a registry hive which Windows needs to start and run. You will have to reinstall Windows. Let us know if you need help doing so.

Best regards,
DocSee here...

You guys are GENIUS! Thank you so much for the help! USING the information you sent me, I was able to repair my computer back to it's normal state. All my pictures (including the dirty ones my babysitter was apparently trying to erase when she caused my computer to go crazy) and DOCUMENTS are retrievable. Not so lucky with some of my programs (iTunes, Turbo Tax, Norton Internet Security, etc.).

Is there a way to retrieve my 2005 tax information? All of my desktop icons are VISIBLE; however, when I try to open the program it reads: "Your configuration has been modified [pri.inj, startup]. Please re-install" The same issues with my Norton Internet Security and ITunes/ipod. I don't want to reinstall these programs if there is a way that I can restore without losing my information. Thank Again!Angela22 - I would like to say "go to your backup" but I guess that would be superfluous.

Before attempting any re-install of TurboTax (of which I have no experience) or any other prog, can your tax files be seen by any prog such as Explorer or using Dir in the Command Prompt window or by doing a Search for the file names/suffixes or any other program you can think of:-? If they can be found then they can probably be copied for backup to a cd or floppy, if your pc has such things. If your files have been deleted either to the Recycle Bin or using Shift+Del then you may still be able to recover them. If they are simply not accessible that's another matter.

Please advise some details of your pc such as Operating System (I have been assuming XP) and whether you have a cd burner and burning prog installed (such as Nero or Kerio) and whether you have a diskette drive. Also whether or not your System Restore feature is enabled.

Whatever, do not install anything on your hard drive until we have exhausted all efforts to recover files.

Edit.1: Since posting above have done bit of searching and this is just one of the TurboTax pages

Edit.2: Here is the TurboTax forum, you might like to register/login and post your problem there. Don't forget to give some details of your Operating System, TurboTax version and post the entire error message you get. Someone on the forum may have the answer to the question "If I reinstall TurboTax will I lose data files?"

Edit.3: I note on the forum that there is the suggestion to update & install the latest TurboTax version so I guess that this would not be promoted if a new install would cripple data files. Hmmmm!

Good luck & please let us know how you get on..

Solve : Code 22 problem?

Answer»

When my computer began to hang up shortly after turn on, I began a search for some contaminated files. The following message appeared-
Hardware Resource Section
Code 22 (0x6)
This devise is disabled
*ACPI IRQ holder for PCI IRQ steering
HKEY_Local_machine/Enum/ACPI/*PNPOCOF/00000003
I have found Code 22 in the ms KB's but this does not appear to provide a solution to my problem.
Can someone tell me how to ENABLE this devise and also any other procedures I require to correct my problem.
Thank you for any suggestions.does any members is going to help this guy out because i have no idea about code 22OK, here goes the drill.

When did this start?

Has anything been changed in the system - hardware or software?

What did you learn in your googling?

Tell us a detail or two about your system, operating system, etc., etc. as Miss Cleo is off today.
OS Win98SE
Homebrew Azus Athlon 700 mhs/512Mbs
sound Blaster Live
AIG;Ad-Aware;spyBot;panda

When did this start?
Can't pinpoint the exact time as I was trying to transfer my LP record library to CD's and was having a problem making the PROPER connection to my Stereo Rcvr.

What did I learn from my googling?
Found the Devise Driver Manager error code 22 stating that the ACPI IQ holder for PCI IRQ steering was disabled. Of the three options listed the third option seems to me to be WAY to the solution.
KB133240 (Troubleshooting Device Conflicts with Device Manager) mentions that the Sound Blaster Live AUDIO card tends to be a common problem in error 22.

Solution 22 suggests removing the ACPI and redetecting it with AddNew Hardware Wizard.
Redetecting? I'm not familiar with this term. Does that mean to reinstall?

Try turniing off ACPI in the BIOS, or turn on if it is off.I have searched the Bios(Awawrd) but cannot find any referance to the ACPI.In power management?Scroll down to Error 22

Good luckSorry I missed the ACPI first time around.
My bios reads as follows:

Suspend-to Ram CAPABILITY [Disabled] Auto bios will enable or disable STR support depending
on +5vsb capability of your power supply.
[Disable] bios always disables STR Support.

Note: This feature needs ACPI OS and devise driver support. If the system fails to enter or resume from STR, please check the system configuration.

I changed the setting in my bios from : Disabled , to : Auto.

The code 22 error still persists.

Solve : No Power; Computer won't turn on!?

Answer»

Ok I know this sounds ridiculous, but after kind of a harsh shut down last week, the computer will not turn on anymore. I checked the power strip - its fine. I plugged it into an alternate outlet - nothing. I bought a new power cord (thinking I blew it out!) - and still no juice! The green light in the back flickers a bit but won't stay lit. What happened?! And more importantly how do I fix it?What do you mean by "harsh shutdown"? Also, it sounds like your power supply has just gone bad. Gather information such as the power supply WATTAGE, etc. and go buy a new one.

FlameWell, just a shutdown that was forced bc I had just installed some software updates.

I have read your response as well as other "FAQ" on websites, and it seems like I will need to replace the Power Supply - but what exactly does this mean?

Essentially, right now, I have nothing plugged into the UNIT, I have it plugged into a wall outlet, and when I insert the power cord, the LED flickers quickly and then nothing.

Any help is appreciated!!A power supply replacement is the first step. if you open your case you will see a metal box where the power cord plugs in. That is what you have to replace. On most systems it is held in by 4 screws on the bacl of THTE case, and then cables plug into the items that require power - motherboard, drives, etc.

If you could post your motherboard or computer make/model we might be able to offer more specific help and suggestions. if it is a Compaq, Dell, etc. pre-fab system, the power supplies can be proprietary, which means you can''t just go to BestBuy and buy one off the shelf. It is also a case of you get what you pay for. an el cheapo $10 is not a soluion for long, if at all. Yeah this is a 6 year old HP Pavilion desktop. Not the greatest machine. At this point, I'd love to get it working long enough to back everything up one last time. IPOD was CONNECTED to it, too... if I got a new computer, would my IPOD sync and load up my songs to the new computer?

As for the motherboard, I dont know the details for, it was upgraded 2 years ago when the sound and cable connection wasnt working.

I am not SURE I could do this replacement by myself. How much does it typically cost if I had someone else do it?Post your model number for the machine.

The replacement should only take about 10 minutes. A quality power supply is $50 approximately (alhough some cost much more). You have to know the model # of the machine to see what you need and what it can take to get the price for a real HP part.

I would go to a local computer store rather than the Geek Squad, but that's just me. you can call around and get quotes for changing a power supply. If you have a geeky friend, just buy him dinner!

You could always get the data off the hard drive. It is not in jeopardy with this repair.

So we will wait to hear about the model number. Its an HP Pavilion 7855. Thanks so much for the help!!That is a 185 watt special form factor power supply on that unit. Best Buy definitely does not stock that.
I don't see a way to order it online from HP, but you could call them.

Here is the basic info on that system:

Have you tried slaving the drive to your other computer?

There is a handy USB device listed on the link below for doing that which maybe you can get where you live.
Thanks for your help. I have not tried slaving to my other PC. Is this where you plug into the IDE cable and identify as a second drive? Is there a source for step by step instructions?Dugganfam,

It's best to start your own thread rather than hijack someone else's, but here you go:

Solve : Strange speaker noise?

Answer»

I noticed today that my speakers make a strange noise every so often. It's like the rattle of a rattlesnake. It's not very loud and it lasts about 3 seconds and happens at random intervals.

Computer info.
DELL Dimension 8100
Pentium 4 Processor
512 MB RDRAM
Microsoft XPDo you have cellphones NEAR to them too..? Any microphones? When did it start? Made any changes to the system recently?

FlameThe only possible change I can think of was the flash BIOS and upgrading the memory, nothing else.

No cell phones near it or microphones or new hardware.Anyone?Try the speakers on another computer, try another set of speakers on the offending computer. Can I plug-in the speakers to a laptop?Sorry Armando, I didn't realise you have a laptop.
I'd guess you could plug some speakers in, if you can find a hole... go for it.Well I use a desktop but both my mom and dad have lap-tops. I'll ask them when they get home and see if I can fing this "hole"

Armando...... Ah ......is this issue on the Dell machine that you are unable to install SP2 on ?

dl65 Yes sir, it is.

PS: I tried the speakers on my TV (couldn't use them on the laptops yet) and they work just fine.Armando.....It is my humble OPINION ...that once you get your Dell desktop working properly all your strange issues will disappear . First thing to do is get a new legal win XP cd ....... do a format and clean install c/W SP2 and you will be back in business .

Please note that my SUGGESTION is just MY opinion .........others may offer other SUGGESTIONS and thats ok too.

dl65 Please note that my suggestion is just MY opinion..... W2k is much cheaper & better.Armando,

Is a legal WIndows CD out of the quesion? It seems you had a legal WinME CD, but you have given up on that?

Solve : Display Adapter?

Answer»

Please Help....
Display Adeapters doesn't show in my device manager. This happen after I try to installed ATI Radeon 9550 video card. Previosly I had a NVidia card. I deleted the drivers for this card and after that "Display Adapter" disapear from Device Manager.
Thanks,
JesusSo load he drivers from the CD that came with the card. That do not work. I ALREADY try that. The ATI video card requires the display adapter to be present. I need to restablish the dispalay adapters in the devise manager.Did you try the ATI site for a newer driver that may have it's own INSTALL routine?Yes, I try that and it didn't work. I call ATI and the answer was to go to the display adapter in the device manager. The words "Display Adapters" are not showing in Device Manager. What I need to do is get back the Display Adapters back in. When you open Device Manager the window display:

Computer
Disk Drives
Display Adapters
DVD/CD-ROM Drives

and so on, in my case, Display Adapters is MISSING. How do I fix this problem? How about running the Add New Hardware wizard? That should turn it up.I did that and I am getting error code 19 (CORRUPTED register). What should I do next. From Bill Gates:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=310123#XSLTH3272121122120121120120That dosn't work either.
When I try to install new device, I see the ATI card with the yellow exclamation marks on it. At this point I can't do anything else. I can't unimstall, I can't do any of the resolution that they required.
To edit the register directly I need help in where to go and what to do.
thanks for all the help up to this point, I hope you can GIVE me further advise.

I purchased an Intel Pentium III 1000 MHZ - 1Ghz CPU Processor for my Hewlett Packard computer. Does anyone know if that model will work in my pc?

What motherboard does it have and which processor is it using now?

If you install everest it will tell you all the details, if the computer is operational that is.

As it happens this computer has a PIII 1000MHz processor on an MSI-MS 6309 motherboard.

Does anyone but you and me know who Miss Cleo is? Maybe Miss Cleo can tell us (LOL).Maybe it is the sister of Miss Otis?first THING to do, is there are two types of PIII's a traditional socket, and then a cartirage (looks like a SNES game). they are two differant styles easily destiguated for one another, open your computer, does it look like it will work. if not no need to go farther, then if it will, GOTO HP's site enter your serial # and model #, to find out what kind of motherboard you have, google the motherboard to see what processors it will support.

also you can look up detailed specs of your processors on intel, USE the spec# on the processor at: intel spec FINDER

Solve : Need help Backing up Hard Drives?

Answer»

Hello Everyone

So I here everyone always saying how important it is to back up hard drives and I also hear that it should be done every week. So am WONDERING if you guys can list several ways of doing so, and what types of applications are needed and what steps I should take in dewing so. I would greatly appreciate it.

Leo.
Seedless (every grape should be ):

Does your computer have Windows XP Home or Windows XP Professional?

DocHey Doc im runing Windows XP Pro SP2.

LeoSeedless:

Windows XP Professional has two built-in features you can use: the backup program and the ability to burn CDs. To read more, click Start and click Help and Support, then do a search for the words "backup" and "cd burning".

Doc

If you have ENOUGH room on your hard drive, you can back up your entire system (excluding the backup folder, of course) to a backup folder. If you don't have enough room to do this, you can back up just the system state, which is an option in the Microsoft backup program.

For regular backups, i'd suggest a full backup followed by daily or weekly incremental backups. If you need more help, let us know.

Best regards,

Hello Leo, there is a lot about drive imaging on the link below. I have had to restore both operating system drives on this computer because I made a mess of updating it and then did something wrong in the registry. If there hadn't been these backups on a partition I would have had to start again I suppose. I also have backups on bootable data DVDs provided in case the hard drive fails.

All these backups are made with Image For Windows.

Have a look at drive imaging on the link below.

The restores worked perfectly FIRST time.

Google is VERY helpful for finding all sorts of information just like this. Here is the first thing I found, and it only took seconds:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/learnmore/bott_03july14.mspxI find windows backup next to USELESS.A useless Microsoft product? How unusual.Norton Ghosti second the idea of using norton ghost, just get another hd, simular to yours, it will copy the entire disk, and if yours should fail, just replace with the GHOSTED backup disk, and your running everything from the time you performed the ghost image.
