Solve : usb ext hd'sand 137 meg limit on old mb's?

Answer»

Hi
I have a QUESTION that NO pc store seems to know for sure.
I Have a OLDER mb that has a 137 gig limit on the bios (won't see ANYTHING over 137gb drives)
I want to buy an external usb hard drive, and want to know if pc will see it and will it work, if connected through the usb ports?
Also will it be seen with an add-on pci usb 2.0 card?

THANK You

Mike
It will see it, but you might not be ABLE to get the full capacity as a single drive. If you partition it you can use all of the space, but just as two partitions.

Solve : Using Xbox live and the Internet at the same time.?

Answer»

Ok, I don't know much about making multiple connections with the internet. So that's why i'm here.

I want to keep my Xbox Live hooked up while at the same time my COMPUTER's internet is hooked up. I have a cable modem and i have to disconnect ONE and plug the other ethernet cord in every time.

Do I NEED a router? Is that what it's called? If so what kind of router or is there a certain one I need to buy?

Please any answers are greatly appreciated. ThanksAre you using cable? If so any router that has cable usage is fine all you need to do is plug your internet cable to the new hub instead of the SINGLE cable router. There are plenty of routers out there im sure if you google some step by steps it should show you.

Solve : unseen d:/ drive?

Answer»

hi

i have a RECURRING problem with my d:/ drive. sometimes when i turn on my computer and look for the drive it is unseen by windows and i appear to only have a c:/ drive in my computer.

recently i sent in my computer into a workshop for a checkup and a complete reinstall of windows XP. when i asked them if they found any trouble with the d:/ drive or the cable they said no it is fine, so i asummed this problem was sorted and it was simply an OS issue. but i have just TRIED to install software today and i noticed that it has gone "missing" again but no doubt it will be found by windows again sometime in the future by itself. i have never installed any drivers or firmware to the drive. what can i do to "find" my drive again?

p.s the model of my drive is an LG CD-RW and maybe 5 years old. thanksGo to LG's website for UPDATED drivers. Also, which operating SYSTEM are you using? Was it fine until you installed a certain program? Do you have virus and spyware protection?

Flame"Go to LG's website for updated drivers."

i tried that but it said not to install any firmware if your drive is unseen specifically in its readme

"Also, which operating system are you using?"

windows xp

"Was it fine until you installed a certain program?"

i haven't installed that much onto my computer yet since i got it back from the workshop (15gb) but i am not sure of this.

"Do you have virus and spyware protection?"

yes5 years is a long time for CDRW's these days. You can try it in another machine and see if it works, but I suspect it won't. That is the ultimate test. The mechanics may be fine (opens and closes) and it still can be a worthless, dead drive.yes dvd rw's are very cheap to buy and i will probably buy one soon.

in the meantime though my drive has just reappered suddenly (i used CCLEANER on the registery so maybe this would have made the difference) so now everything is fixed. thanksCome back and see us if you have any questions

Solve : Computer Studders?

Answer»

I have recently STARTED having problems with the studders when I play my flight SIM GAMES on my computer. The action in the games goes from fluid action then actions stops and goes, stops and goes. The lag times in-between the action is about a second. The rest of the computer action such as internet and e-mail runs fine unless I shut the game and then try to connect to the internet without first re-booting the computer.

I am running Windows XP on an AMD Athlon and an ATI Radeon Graphics card and 512 DDR Memory. I have loaded and installed all new drivers for my hardware and did a fresh re-install of Windows. At this point I'm beggining to think that it may be either a memory card problem or the impending demise of my graphics card. I have never had problems like this in the past. Is there a way to figure out what the problem could be?Thanks in advance to those who respond to this topic. How much RAM does your game require? Try closing unnecessary items while PLAYING (IM, etc.)

FlameHi Flame, The game used to play well with 256 DDR and I now have 512DDR. I use a program CALLED end it all to shut down unused programs.I have never heard of it... Have you scanned for viruses and Spyware? Have you been keeping-up with Windows Updates?

Solve : Connectivity problem?

Answer»

I'm having difficulty GETTING my Motorola phone to connect with my Compaq laptop running Win XP Home.

Initially I had to connect my phone to my PC ( via USB cable/port ), prior to SWITCHING on my PC, in order for my phone to appear as a modem in device manager.

After advice from HP I upgraded my bios which MEANS my phone is now automatically recognised in device manager under the view - 'devices by type'. However according to

www.helpwithpcs.com/upgrading/change-irq-settings.htm ,

under view - 'resources by type' you should be able to see all connected H/W. But I cannot see my phone or my cordless mouse ( though my cordless keyboard is listed ). Is this correct and do I have to look elsewhere for the solution, or is this the source of the problem?

RIs this phone compatible with your system to be USED as a modem?

FlameProbably not, although it does have GPRS capability, I just want to share music and photos.I suggest either reading the phone's manual or contacting your wireless provider.

Flame

I only want to know if it's correct or not for the phone to appear in my PCs device manager view - 'resource by type'.

My phone manual does not cover this and I don't think Motorola WOULD be able to help on this point.

If my PC is working properly on this point, then I have exhausted all PC possibilities and I think I WILL have to contact Motorola.

RWell, you could contact Motorola if you wish, but what I had in mind was the company that gives the phone service. Sprint, Alltel, Verizon, etc.

FlameSome confusion..... I'm happy to connect my phone to my PC via cable, but when trying to run the phone/PC synchronisation software, it claims the phone is not connected, so I'm trying to eliminate the various options to clarify it is a PC or phone problem.

RI'm sure you've checked to be sure the phone is on Here's an idea that I just got... Check the phoen settings, and make sure that the USB connection is open.

FlameUSB connection is set for data/fax.......

RIt's all enabled and everything? Any software you need to install?

FlameI've installed Motorla Phone Tools onto my PC, and updated to the latest version.

RStill nothing eh? Does Motorola have a help section where they list common issues? Maybe yours is there...

Solve : nothing on monitor?

Answer»

I also have the same problem :-? . However when I start my computer I switch on in the follwing MANNER. Monitor first ( green light comes on on monitor ). The I turn on the PC...The monitor light then turns to Yellow...No beeps from the system at all, but the is no picture on the monitor. I have tried swapping the AGP graphics card, but this did not work. I have tried a new monitor...With this monitor I get a No Signal error on the monitor. No I dont think the clips broke off and I am not at home to get that info for you but I am sure it is INTELi have 3 computers nancy, one (had) an audio problem, and two of them wouldnt boot up, and one was fixed by resetting the JUMPERS. make sure you always ground yourself before you touch anything in your comp though, of course. Thanks and I hope you get yours fixed too!Nancy, take both the computers to a shop & tell them what happened.
If you haven't damaged anything then it will be a 5 minute job to re-insert all the cards properly.Easier said than done as I live way out in the boonies and money isn't GOOD, that is why I am here asking questions! I reaeated ram again and now I get one long and 4 short beeps so back to the drawing BOARD! I am determined though. Another thing, the one computer has onboard video but with just a nine pin female connector so if I enabled the onboard sound, took out the PCI video card and find a monitor cable with a nine pin MALE do you think that would help at all?

Solve : Help setting up router + wireless router?

Answer»

I've been having problems setting up my WRT54G, here is my situation.

I want to have my normal router and my wireless router plugged in at the same time. The ethernet cable that came with my wireless router is going from my original router to my wireless router (into the internet slot) - and the ethernet cable from the back of my computer (ethernet CARD) is going into slot number one of my new wireless router.

I go through the set-up on the disk, and I have all the lights working on my wireless router - POWER, WLAN, 1 slot, and Internet LIGHT. My normal router is working perfectly with this set-up, and the two computers attached to it are working fine. Now, when I run the wireless router cd set-up, it makes it through all the steps until the point where it checks for internet connection where it fails.

I thought it was Zone Alarm BLOCKING the routers connection, so I disabled it - I still fail on the connection test.

Any suggestions on how to get both working properly would be greatly appreciated!Tell us why you want two routers. It can certainly complicate THINGS.

Solve : problem with usb, usb not being detected?

Answer»

hi,
I'm very new to this forum. So, i don't think i've misposted the topic. The problem i'm having is that i updated my existing usb to be usb2.0. Still it was working but now it is showing problem. When I tried to install web cam a message is displayed that there is no working USB installed in my computer. I'm using Windowx XP professional sp2. I also updated BIOS. My motherboard is from intel D845GVFN.

thank you in advance..
JayJay:

You've come to the right place!

A few things to try (in order of increasing difficulty):

* Unplug the webcam and then plug it back in to the USB port.
* Plug a different USB device into the USB port to see if it works.
* Install the drivers using the CD that came with the webcam.
* Check the Windows Device Manager to see if the USB ports are operating properly.
* Check the Windows Event VIEWER to see if any errors GIVE a clue to the cause of the problem.
* Check the BIOS setup to see if the USB support is enabled.

Let us know if you need help with any of these suggestions, or if you tried all these and need more suggestions. Also, let us know if the webcam worked before you upgraded the BIOS.

Best regards,
Dochi Doc,
thanks for your reply.

Ya i've unplugged the web cam. I've even uninstalled the driver and the software of the cam. But when I try installing it again it shows me a dialog box saying that there is no working USB port in your system..something like this.
I tried to check it out in the Device Manager but there is no any mentioning of USB.
I don't think I can find the information in the Event Viewer coz there are so many to find.
Also in the BIOS setup, when I enter the USB configuration there is nothing there no any options, no any informations nothing except the USB configuration title itself.
So I suspect that my USB port in my motherboard itself has been damaged..
So, please say me what it actually can be.

I'm using Windowx XP Pro, as well as Windows 2000 Server.
I've Intel motherboard D845GVFN

If it can be the case that my system is not supporting the USB2.0 then I wonder how it can be uninstalled so that I'll be using the same old version which I already had.

Do you have any other USB devices you can plug into the USB port, like a removable storage device (which is sometimes called a thumb drive or FLASH drive or key-chain drive)? If so, try that to see if Windows detects the device. If it does, the USB port is working fine.

Best regards,
Doc
no there was no any warnings while or after the installation. Instead, the computer rebooted and showed the dialog that the installation was successful.

ya i tried connecting pen-drive in the USB port but didn't detect. The main thing is the USB itself is not being detected in my system. Not in the Device Manager, Not in the BIOS setup, not even when i tried to find it running the msinfo32.exe file.
thinking that if its a problem of OS, i formatted my computer and re-installed the OS but same problem persists. Now, i feel its not due to the malfunctioning of OS coz nothing is shows in the USB Configuration in BIOS setup itself.
I took it to the computer mechanics too but they too couldn't figure out.

Can it be the problem of the driver of USB ? coz I never used the USB port infront of my CPU. When I tried using it getting it connected by the hardware mechanic that USB port was also not working, ie. wasn't detecting the device connected.

Solve : Using Dualview?

Answer»

I have beent trying to get the Dualview feature to work for quite a while. I have a GEFORCE 5700FX which supports the Dualview function. After updating my drivers I turned off my computer, plugged in my second monitor (tested and proven to work by itself), and then turned the PC back on. (Using WinXP) I get into the desktop and right-click > properties > settings > advanced> GeForce (Vid Card/Display Adaptor) and eneabled the dualview feature. I have also tried from the Settings option. No matter how I try it I get a BLANK second monitor, but I can pull items over to the second monitor. I can't find anythign online to help I'm hoping someone here can.

Thank you,
NathanAre you saying that the monitor is blank and off or there is a wall paper but nothing there?

If the monitor shows wallpaper and nothing there:

There is nothing wrong, it jsut means that your desktop is exptended to that side. You are allow to put more junk on desktop then ever before (not recomended of course) you can now move the start menu on the other side if you want.. Try it..

Please note the start menu will not EXTEND to the second monitor.

If the monitor shows nothing:

First of all see if you have the check box that says STRETCH to other side. and make sure its ENABLE also check device manager for hardware conflicts.

If you want the monitor to display the same thing as the first monitor:

Right click go to properties and on the display properties make sure the monitor is enable but uncheck the extend my desktop box then apply and then OkThe monitor is blank. And I have made sure of no hardware conflicts, and I have the box checked to stretch to the other side. And still I get nothing on my second monitor, just a blank screen.

Solve : Machine Error?

Answer»

Here's something weird. I had a hard drive fail on my a short while ago. I purchased a new one and proceeded to reinstall Windows. I have an XP Pro upgrade disc, as well as a full version of 2000 Pro. If I TRY to do a fresh install of XP, after insterting the 2000 disc when prompted, it'll get within 3 or 4 minutes of completing the installation and I'll get the "blue screen of death" with a Machine Error. However, I can install 2000 and it will run without any problems. If I try to upgrade to XP after installing 2000, once again I'll get the blue screen. What would cause this to happen? Here's a little info on my machine: It's home built with an AMD ATHLON 64 3700+ CPU, 512MB PC3200 Kingston RAM, 80GB Seagate Hard Drive, 128MB Dedicated Graphics card with NVidia Chipset, generic cd-rom and dvd+/-rw, all on an ASUS motherboard.

HELP!!!

Is it a shiny real Windows CD?Yup. Shiney, new, for real Windows CD. Purchased and everything with a real, genuine key. What is the specific error message?I don't have that info right this minute, but I can try to reload again tonight and see what it says.Error Message:

Some reading

Did you have XP on the computer before?
Here's the complete saga on this stupid machine...

I had upgraded my hardware several months ago, and had XP running without a problem. A couple weeks ago, my hard drive died. I purchased an 80G Seagate and replaced my old drive. I originally had the pin configuration wrong, inadvertantly setting it up as a 32GB slave drive. Windows 2000 would install and run without a problem, but I would have the same errors that I'm referring to right now when I tried to upgrade to XP. When I realized about the pin error on my new HD, I switched that and was able to load and run XP. About a week ago, I went to turn on the computer and it would turn on but I wouldn't get any icons, start menu, anything. I attempted to do a system repair using the XP disc, but I kept getting the same errors. I switched back to an older 40G hard drive, so as not to lose anything on my current drive. 2000 will still load and run without a problem, but when I try to upgrade it to XP I'll get within a couple minutes of it FINISHING and I keep getting the same errors. Now, I did read something about the bios being set up incorrectly with the hard drives and whatnot, which I can check into, but I'm at work and won't be able to until tonight. However, if ANYONE has any other words of wisdom, I'll gladly take them.First of all I beleave your upgrade is actually a full version. Most upgrades that I have seen are full versions that LOOK for a previous version for compliance. If you have more than 1 disk drive then put the xp in one and the 2000 in the other. Then erase the boot sector. Delete all partitions then restart the computer and put the primary partiton back. Reboot then FORMAT with the format utillity on the XP disk useing the NTFS file system I would not use the quick one. After all this is done then XP should start to install. I'm not certain where but at some point it will ask you for a file that is on a previous version of windows. tell it where it can find it (the Other Drive) or you can take out the XP disk and put it in that drive. All you need is the drive letter it will find what it needs.
This should work. Good luck.
EricI've done that before. Each time, right before I format, it asks to see my Windows 2000 disc. It reads it, and then I switch back to do the format and start the install. I still get the blue screen with the error message when I do this.

I'm at work, but I'm going to try some things when I get home. I need to check my bios to make sure my hard drive configuration is correct. I'm also going to try that F7 thing I read about when it starts to install Windows just to see if that might work.

I'm crossing my fingers!

P.S. I've checked on the ASUS website, and at this point there aren't any BIOS upgrades available, so as far as that goes, I'm stuck.UPDATE:

So, I changed some things in my bios concerning my hard drive configuration, and VOILA I'm up and running again!

Thanks for everyone's help!

Solve : ASUS V9999 GFX Card Problem?

I've bought a ASUS V9999/TD/128MB 6800/AGP Graphics card. After placing it in it's slot (the only slot it would fit into, so I know it's the correct slot.) I turned on the PC and the card started screaming at me. I very very loud SCREECH sound. :-? Nothing on the monitor appeared when I ahd the monitor plugged into the new screeching GFX card or the old intergrated GFX. So I've took out the new card and now here I am, at your mercy.

I've uninstalled the old Intergrated Graphics drivers before I tried putting the new card in aswell.

Should install the V9999 drivers before I put in the card, or is there a different REASON?

Is it possible my system supports PCI and not AGP? :-/

Those answers would be no idea and not sure.

I'll have a rummage around in the BIOS, but how would I find my power supply details etc?

Is it possible the screeching is coming from something other than the GFX card, something it's conflicting with?Take a close look at any printed label on your power supply. It should provide some info.

Gigabyte has downloadable motherboard manuals. I see there are several versions of your board listed on their site and I'm not sure which one you have. See http://www.gigabyte-usa.com/Motherboard/Support/Manual/Manual_List.htm to download a manual. The different versions of the GA-8SIMLH may be the same as far as disabling onboard video. That's just a guess.

The motherboard may have a marking on it somewhere that indcates what version it is.

Solve : Very strange beeping from speakers...?

Answer»

I'm getting very strange, morse-code-like beeping from my speakers intermittently every 15-30 mins. This just started a few hours ago. Even if I shut the volume off (not the power), I can still hear it now and then. The only cure is to turn off the speaker power. Is there some strange interference going on today, some spyware, or am I just plain crazy? It could be. But, just to be safe, shutdown your computer and that should fix your problem. What spyware/adware/virus scanner are you using on a regular BASIS?

Do you have a cordless phone, or wireless keyboard/mouse that could be causing interference?Yes I have a cordless phone in my room and a cellphone, but I wouldn't see how those would be the causes as I've had them for a while. This is a recent problem.

I use AVG, Spybot, and Ad-aware every other day. I'm clean. *shrugs*Try those speakers on ANOTHER computer. If the problem persists, THROW them in the TRASH. Also try different speakers on this computer. You'll soon know where the problem is.Cellphones will do that, have you tried moving it AWAY?Thank you, moving my cellphone has solved the problem.Quote

I have had similar problems with speakers but unfortunately the morse-code like beeping will still happen even if I have the speakers off. I've also had the noise come out of my alarm clock and my suround sound systyem (only sub-woofer that I know of). Is it really caused by a cell phone?Yes

Solve : Reformatting floppies???

Answer» WIN XP (Home) SP.2

Am trying to copy for backup some floppy DISKS supplied by MS however the content of the floppies will not fit on a standard formatted floppy. Some of the MS disks contain a file in excess of 1.6mb. The format shown on the sticky label is "High-density (DMF)". Can I reformat standard Double-sided High-density floppies to copy such a file?

When installing the program on the disks, the disks are called sequentially as in "INSERT Disk_02 in A:" so guess backup must be on floppies.

Thanks.

Solve : All fans spin but NO POST?

Answer»

Hi...,

After intensive search in this forum I[ch8217]m posting my problem[ch8230] :-?
I'd assembled a System in Oct 04 with OS Win2K. It worked well for an year. I decided to upgrade the OS to WinXP. While upgrading I noticed during one of the reboots that the welcome page before POST began, had shown as Celeron D, whereas the system I had built was Pentium IV 2.4Ghz. .. Anyway, I completed upgrading the System to WinXP. During subsequent restarts, I observed that at least 1 out of 5 TIMES welcome page showed as Celeron D. Out of curiosity, I opened the heat sink to reconfirm the make of the CPU. It was marked as Pentium IV 2.4GHz. Reassembled everything back.

Configuration of my system is as below:
----------------------------------------------
CPU-Intel Pentium IV 2.4 GHz
MB-Intel D865GBF
RAM-256MB 266MHz (Now 2 x 256MB 400MHz)
Seagate 80GB
PSU 300 WATTS
ATX Tower Cabinet with 1 In Fan, 1 Out Fan
LG CD writer

Now, I started facing the series of actual problems: [smiley=cry.gif]
------------------------------------------------------------
1. The System works well, as long as I run ordinary programs.
2. Idle conditions, the CPU zone temp is 46 to 48C max. Any low end games will raise the CPU temp to 54 to 56C max. And high end games will raise temp above that & system will freeze!
3. Well the system can be used for several hours in idle condition or with ordinary software, but the system DOES NOT START even after normal shut down..
4. After normal shut down and wall power taken off, when the system is powered back again, the CPU & Cabinet fans run and NO DISPLAY, NO POST, NO BEEP....
5. I TRIED all possible methods to identify the problems through reading the Intel website, Forums etc...
6. Some of the quick solutions were like, CMOS battery change, Bios recovery, RAM replacement, PSU replacement and reassembling the parts one-by-one in sequence, etc. Nothing worked.
7. Finally, I could start the system by removing the CPU & reseating it again, placing the heat sink back with thermal paste. But the problem starts again when the system is restarted. But the problem is SOLVED temporarily every time by reseating the CPU! And no other methods mentioned in sl. no. 6 work

My first question is, which out of CPU & MB has gone bad or both of them? And next Q is, Can the problem be resolved in any tricky method or should I try returning the CPU/MB Intel?

Thanks to all & welcome with some genuine solutions. I want to hear about the make and model of the power supply. If the currents not right, all bets are off. 300w is not much, either. The PSU make is VIP 300 Watts.

During the early troubleshootings, I had swapped the PSU with other two known good PSUs of 400 watts both of them. But still the problem CONTINUED. So the posibility of problem in the PSU was ruled out...

Thx & regds,

Solve : boot files and OS on different hard drives?

Answer» HEY guys. hope you don't mind helping a man with his interesting problem.

So here's the deal, i have my boot files on my C:\ since i originally was runing win 98 off of it. Later i upgraded and installed win2000 on an added hard drive (D:\). I've been running like this (only using win2000) for a while now (READ: years) and want to now replace my first drive with a bigger drive that i purcahsed so i can give the old one to family.
I read somewhere that boot files NEED be on the C:\ since it's the master, but could I somehow just switch my D:\ to master so it becomes my C:?

Idealy what i want to do is make my D:\ (that has win2000 on it) my master (C:\) and this secondary drive the slave(D:\)

I could just install a NEW OS on my new drive (having it as my master) and reinstall EVERYTHING but that's more than a SMALL matter so i want to avoid that if possible.

Thoughts? There are workarounds, but in the long run to avoid problems, i would personally do it the right way, and reload the O/S on the C drive. I wouldn't even think twice on this issue.

Solve : CRT monitor display area changes dynamically?

Answer»

I have an odd problem wit my Sony E500 crt display. It works fine with a static desktop. However, when I start opening and closing windows, the entire screen image stretches and shrinks in sync
with what I do on my desktop.

I have tried two different PC and windows and linux and the problem is there. It must be a hardware problem with the CRT though I do not know if it is simple to fix.

ThanksCan you give US a more graphical description of this?Sure, except it is very odd to describe. Basically, I have windows xp running with several
windows open, say IE and Outlook. For example, I resize the IE window to be about 70% of
the CRT screen. Then I go to the tool bar and minimize the IE window. Next I restore the IE window to its former size. As the IE window is expanded, the entire desktop display expands and is MAGNIFIED to exceed the physical size of the CRT. In about a second or two it settles back to
fill the CRT screen. Next, if I minimize the IE window the entire desktop shrinks and fills less than
the CRT screen. In a second or so it settles back to its normal size.

If I just move the IE window across the desktop everything works fine. This happens with any open
window, not just IE, of course.A very good description considering the condition. [smiley=thumbup.gif]
Quite a bit of reading for you here.
http://www.sony-cp.com/en/products/archive/e500/
Notice the monitor driver at the bottom?
Download it & double click it to see what happens.
I downloaded the PDF User Manual, not a lot of help but it's worth gettting as it's only 3MBs.
Has it ever worked 'normally'?Sounds to me like the problem may be a very poor performing video FUNCTION in your computer hardware, not the monitor itself. Are you USING onboard video or a separate card? How many video memory does your system/card have? What are the other specs (processor, RAM, hard drive) of your system?

Also, how many processes do you have running after a fresh startup? How many icons in your system tray/notification area, those programs running in the background? Do you use any spyware detection/removal tools to clean your system?

Folks,

Some background. I bought this monitor about 5 years ago. I was brand new factory sealed etc...
I worked perfectly as far as I can tell. This problem syrfaced about 6 months ago and seems to be getting worse over time.

As I mentioned earlier, I tried two different PCs and 3 video cards. The last card is an nVidia 7800 GX card. Problem exists with all combinations. Interestingly, once powered up the monitor seems ok for about a half hour or so and then this behavior manifests.

It looks like the flyback transformer in the CRT unit is somehow coupling to the video signal over the monitor cable. As I say, with a static desktop, everything is fine and stable. It is only when windows are resizing or opening that I see this problem. On the other hand, 5 years for a monitor is a long time. none have a warranty over 3 years. I have had monitors last longer, but some have lasted less.

Solve : Clear Boot Sector from Drive?

Answer»

Hi,

I just removed my primary operating system HARD drive and replaced it with a new unit. I installed Windows 2000 Server on the new primary drive and want to use the old drive for data storage. The old drive has SEVERAL partitions with existing data, which I don't want to disturb, plus it has the old system partition.

I removed the old verson of Windows 2000 Server from that system partition; however, it apparently didn't clean the boot sector because the partition is still listed as 'Healthy(System)' partition in my Disk Management utility.

Is there a way I can clean this so it becomes listed as 'Healthy' instead of 'Healthy(System)' in the Disk Management utility without disturbing the other partitions?

Thanks for your help!

p.Why don't you just copy the data files to the new hard drive, and then repartition and format the slave drive any way you want, and then copy the data files back there? This seems the easiest and best soluion. I am trying to avoid shuffling pictures back and forth because I don't want to LOSE resolution needlessly. Of course, I've copied them onto CDs in case the drive crashes, but I'd still like to keep the originals intact.

I kind of figured I wouldn't be ABLE to clear the boot sector without reformatting the whole disk -- just hoping there'd be some tool I hadn't heard of yet

It's just something I'll have to live with then. I suppose that having the system partition on the drive won't HURT anything.

Thanks for your reply! As long as it is functional, then.

Solve : Cannot access new hard drive in DOS?

Answer»

I have just bought a new Fujitsu 60GB hard drive for my laptop.

BUT, I cannot access either the old or new drive within DOS.
I have created a DOS startup disk within XP and that works fine, I reboot and up comes the A: prompt, but when I type
C:
I get an error message saying ' Invalid Drive Specification'
Therefore I cannot access my new OR old drive to format it and get it ready to install XP again.

PLEASE HELP!!! I am desparate for some aid...I need to get my pc up and running again to record some music...A HUGE thanks to anyone that can help..
Paul TaylorYou do not need to boot from a floppy to setup a hard drive for XP. Just set your boot order in the BIOS to boot from CD first, INSERT the CD and restart the machine.

You didn't bother to post the make/model NUMBER of the laptop so we have to guess about those details. What processor? Is the drive compatible with your laptop is the next question. Is the hard drive seen in the BIOS?Thanks for the info.
Yes the drive is seen by the bios, both drives are when I swap one FO the other.
The make and model of the new drive is...
FUJITSU Mobile MHT2060AT - hard drive - 60 GB - ATA-100
The old one is exactly the same apart from it is 40GB instead of 60GB.
Apart from what you already said, surely there should be a C prompt when I type C:, there is if you load XP and then open a command prompt so why not one when I boot to DOS?
My Laptop is made by PARS....
Any more info needed let me know.
Thanks again for your help...
Paul
If you are trying to access a brand new hard disk before it has been partitioned and formatted (say by booting a floppy disk and typing "DIR C:" you will get this error. The hard disk must be partitioned and formatted before you can use it.

How can I do this?Well its already been said really. if you set cdrom as your first boot device in your bios, then boot your computer with xp disk in, it will direct you from there. A screen will come up allowing you to partition your drive then format it. It will then go on to install Windows XP. If your still looking at fdisk and format using boot up disk then look at this link below.

http://www.5starsupport.com/tutorial/partition.htmThanks so much for your help.
The only obstacle I can see now is that the XP cd I have got is only a reinstall disk that came with my laptop setup. I would assume that I am going to have to buy a full copy of XP in order to format and partition my hard drive? Is this correct.
PaulNot sure what you mean by reinstall disk. If that came with your laptop and its an XP disk i dont see why you cant reinstall XP using that disk. More details about what you mean by reinstall disk. As this name tells me you should be able to do just that reinstall. What happens when you boot computer with the Xp disk in and have cdrom setup in your bios as first boot device.I suppose you would call it a RECOVERY disk, I have only used it once and it re installed XP. I was never sure if it was the full version of XP as I had the PC made for me by a company that specialises in music PC's, and i know how people can rip you off by only installing THEIR version of windows and not actually giving you a copy.
On this note, I have actually tried messing about with the Boot up sequence in my BIOS by changing it from A to CD to Hard drive and the only one that ever got me anywhere is the floppy...to the A: prompt.
When I set the BIOS to check the CD first OR the Hard Drive first it came up with a screen with a small box in the middle asking me which device did I want to boot from and listed the three options (floppy, Hard drive,CD) and every time I picked one that wasnt the floppy it would just go back to the same screen with the box in it....any ideas? If you have a licence number on your laptop somwhere, then you could borrow xp of someone and use your licence number to install xp, you dont have to buy a copy of xp just get somone to borrow you there copy. Its just the old hard drive you have, has probably got a hidden partition with information on that the recovery disk looks for thats why its not working with the new drive. You see the recovery copy is looking for this same hidden partion with the information on.Aaahhhhh thanks alot mate, that would explain everything...I think I have seen something about a hidden partition somewhere, and yes I have got a Microsoft code under the laptop...ahhh I didnt know I could use anyones copy....Nice one. I shall try it out this weekend and let you know if it works....thanks again for all your help.

Solve : monitor dies?

Answer»

Hello all,

My problem is this, whenever I turn my computer on, it comes up as normal goes through POST and then winXP loading screen...

...but then just as the winXP loading screen finishes the monitor dies :-/
but the computer sounds like it is still loading and logging on (I have no user name so it usually just logs STRAIGHT on) 8-)

I have recently installed some sound-proofing on this inside panels so I am worried that I might have accidentally knocked my graphics card and buggered it up with static or something

Do I need a new graphics card or is there some other solution :-? :-? :-?Well, you might just want to open it up (take the necessary precautions of course) and find out. Make sure it's in nice and tight, and nothing is touching it. Have you made any other changes to your SYSTEM recently?

FlameI installed some soundproofing sheets that STICK to the side panels, i installed some LED and cathode tubes and some molex grips (replacement heads for the 4-pin power connectors), I can get into safe mode, and I have uninstalled my graphics drivers and am in the PROCESS of reinstalling them.

Could it be power consumption problem??How many watts does yours deliver?

From Raptor:

Check all connections & cards. RESEAT them if you must.

Recheck all connections if you replaced molex connectors.

Does it do the same thing in Safe Mode?

FlameI uninstalled the graphics drivers and it starts up normally now??
I have a 350W silent PSU, its a brand name but I bought it a about 4 years ago and can't remember, all power connectors are sound, attempting to instal drivers nowYes, install your updated video drivers. Make sure you do it right...

FlameI've reinstalled my drivers and my computer is fine now???

What the *censored* was that that happened cos' I never touched the hard drive and yet I had to reinstall my graphics drivers???

thanks for your help Every once-in-a-while, these things must be done because a program requires the update, so it makes your life crazy until you finally do it. Glad we were able to help Come back and see us if you have any more questions

sorry for limited info too, i'm using onscreen keyoard and it's taking forever to type with

Do you have virus and Spyware protection? Have you made any changes to your system recently? In order to help you out as qucikly and efficiently as possible, I'm going to ask that you run a System Restoration. To do this, click on Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore. The Restore window will appear, so click on the bullet point that says "restore to an earlier time" and click next. You will now see a calendar. I would say to click on about 2-3 days ago, and select your desired time (if applicable). Click next. You will now see a confirmation. Make sure the INFORMATION showed is correct, and click on Done/Finish. Your system will now restart. Depending on speed, etc. Your system will get to the point where it goes to logoff your account before it shows a progress meter. Depending on system speed and such, this might take a while to complete. Please be patient. Once this is done, the system will restart. Tell us if everything is fine after this, as well as answering the questions I asked you at the beginning of this topic.

Solve : power supply replacement?

Answer»

I need to replace my power supply on my computer but I READ somewhere on here you can't just get a new power supply off the shelf for pre-fab pc's. I have a DELL not sure about motherboard info. Reason for changing power supply is wanting to install video card that requires 250 W and I only got 200 W.http://support.gateway.com/support/manlib/cmponts/Process/8508750/08750c01.htm#1024702I KNOW how to change the power supply but I didn't know if I could just go buy one or if I needed a specific one but thanks for the link. What is the model or service tag number? You will need a different power supply, not made by Dell, but made for that Dell model. The wires can be different as WELL as the mounting screw locations. It is a Demension desktop 2400 series the service tag # is DQ17N41There are some replacement MODELS from other companies, but they may not be a whole lot bigger than what you have. Dimension 2400's are not really high end gaming platforms.

Have you made any changes to your system recently?

FlameAlways a good IDEA to uninstall the printer software, reboot and reinstall the software THEN plug in the printer.

Update the software too if possible.

Solve : New external drive not detected>>>>?

My new Western Digtal 3,5 USB2.0 320GB HDD is not being detected as new HARDWARE by XP.
However under Device Manager a "USB mass storage device" is added with an exclamation mark.
I have tried the drive on my neighbours computer and it WORKED fine there, so the drive itself is OK.
I also re-installed motherboard drivers again, even copied my neighbours driver "USBSTOR.sys" from his system32\drivers directory to mine, but that did not help either.
strange thing is it worked 2 TIMES, but after re-starting WINDOWS I lost the drive again in "my computer".
If anyone KNOWS this problem I would love to hear any suggestions.

Many thanks in advance.

Solve : Laptop Battery Problem?

Answer»

I have an old Omnibook 5000C that I inherited and I want to TRY and make it usable without investing too much money into it. I bought an AC adaptor and it powers up fine but I have no idea if the battery is any good. I unplugged the AC adaptor to see if it worked on batt power and got NOTHING. I checked to see if the driver was installed and I had to reload it from the Win 98 disk but at least now it is recognized in device manager which it wasn't before. I get no battery icon in the system tray but when I go to power options and click on the batt icon there and it's at 100%. I know very little about LAPTOPS but I assume that is about all I can do to test the battery.
I removed the floppy drive in the other bay and installed an extra battery I had(both are F1137A btts) and I got a dim icon and it says 0% charging in slot 2. I left it for 8 hours and still got a 0% charging message. I swapped batts in the slots and then got a 49% charging message but the % never increased. I figure I have two crappy batteries but is there anything else I can try? Is there something special I have to do besides remove the AC adaptor to have it try and boot to a battery?
ThanksQuote

...I unplugged the AC adaptor to see if it worked on batt power and got nothing....
Battery is no good.It appears one battery is shot and the other only holds a partial charge, You can boot with tthe 49% battery and see how long it lasts. That's the best indicator. Leave the dead battery out. It serves no purpose.Thank you for he tips.
The one battery is ALMOST surely dead but the one reflecting 49% does not boot the system at all. Not even a flicker of power when I remove the AC Power. I really suspect the 49% is probably also bogus.
I contacted the on-line store I bought one of the batteries from and they said that the battery had to be charged first. That sounded reasonable but shoudn't the battery at least be DETECTED by my system no matter how dead it is? I mean I can certainly understand if I got a bad battery on-line but no matter how dead the battery is I would think there should at least be an icon showing me an empty battery. Someone else suggested my internal charging unit (whatever that is) may be bad and that I should buy an external charger. I hate to invest too much more in this thing esepcialy if it winds up being some kind of configuration thing.
I can return the battery that showed a partial charge and hope that perhaps I will get a good one in return and I agree that is does sound like I have two bad batteries.
Thanks again for your help.
Go for the return. I agree with not spending too much more cash on it until you get it operational with power. Have you checked the HP web site for downloads for that model?

It is so old it may die of other causes soon anyway. I went through 2 "new" batteries with my old laptop and neither would charge. They were surely new but 7 years old. Give these guys a try: http://www.pacificbattery.com/about.htmlI have used pacificbatery.com as well. No complaints there.

Computer is Dell dimension 4700 Win XP Home
Software Verbatim
Am trying to copy from my documents onto Cd in CD-RW drive. What does use like big floppy mean. Thanks?
You need to have some writing software, like InCD, Roxio, or some such, if you are going to use this for data storage, etc. What software do you have, if any? Has this EVER worked like you envision, or are you new to this?I have roxio CD CREATOR but in the past I have just clicked the command on the left side of the screen copy to.a menu APPEARS listing drives folders etc.I click on the CD-RW it ask to insert CD and it copies.Sometimesthe simplest solutions work best. I WOULD start by uninstalling Roxio, rebooting and then reinstalling.

Does it still do a complete disc to disc copy, like a music CD?

Solve : Burning a DVD?

Answer»

I'm trying to burn a movie to a DVD through the Sonic MyDVD Plus and when I go to add the file I GET this error message: Could not make a thumbnail. Make sure you have the appropriate decoder installed. -47010

I have tried to save the file as another .avi file but that didn't work (which it is already in .avi format). I am stumped, any help in this MATTER would be appreciated. ThanksWhich operating system are you using? I know this questions sounds silly, but you never know... YOu have a DVD Burner, right?

FlameI'm using Windows XP and yes I have a multi-drive.I'm guessing you've burned before? When did the program stop burning?

FlameI've never burned a DVD before. I just d/led a movie and WANTED to burn it to DVD. I did d/l a codec because at first it wouldn't play on my WMP, but after I did that it played fine.Ok. Try searching for any product updates for Sonic. Also try Windows Updates to see if your burner needs an update.

FlameThere is no updates for Sonic, it only lets you upgrade to a newer version and this computer is only a couple of months old. There are also no Windows updates that pertain to this. Before I tried, I downloaded the XviD in order for WMP to play the movie. Could that be conflicting with it?I'm not sure :-/ I'm running out of ideas here...

Flamenevermind I fixed it
thanks anyway
We are KEEN to know how you succeeded.I went here http://labs.divx.com/archives/000068.html and downloaded that. Then it worked. Thanks for keeping us posted. Come back and see us if you have any more questions.

Solve : Where is my keyboard jack input ??

Answer»

My son purchased a used old computer from the PAWNSHOP, however, I can,t find the keyboard jack input. I wanted to do some up dating on it but no keyboard. What can I do ? It's on the back. Usually it's an orange or green colored slot. Maybe even purple. Look next to the mouse slot.

FlameA: Power Connector - The power connector is a 3-prong male connector which enables you to connect a power cable to the computer Port A to obtain power from an electrical outlet. (See diagram above).

B: Power Supply Fan - The power supply fan PROVIDES adequate ventilation for the power supply by exhausting hot air from it.

C: Mouse Port - The mouse is a pointing device that enables you to move and select items on the screen. It is the most commonly used pointing device. The mouse is connected to Port C. (See diagram above). This port is also called a mini-DIN or PS/2 connector. Click here for great prices on Mice.

D: Keyboard Port - The keyboard is one of the input devices that allows you to enter instructions and information into a computer.
The keyboard is connected to Port D. (See diagram above). This port is also known as the mini-DIN or PS/2 connector. The older computers came with a larger port known as a DIN connector.
For a computer peripheral such as a keyboard or a mouse, Click Here.

E: USB Port - (USB) Acronym for Universal Serial Bus. This Port is an external bus that supports data transfer rates of up to 12 Mbps.
This port can connect up to 127 peripherals (such as mice, modems, keyboards, etc.) all at once. It also enables hot-swapping which is being ABLE to connect and disconnect peripherals without powering down the PC. Click here to read about USB Ports.

F: Parallel Port (Printer Port) - The parallel port is a 25-pin female connector (DB-25). It is an interface for connecting external devices such as a printers and computers that require relatively high bandwidth. It supports bi-directional communications.

G: Serial Port (COM Port) - This port is an interface for serial communication being transmitted at 1 bit at a time. This port can be used to connect a computer peripheral such as a modem, mouse, etc.

H: Game Port - The game port is a 15-pin female analog port used to connect game controllers such as joysticks. It can also be used as a Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) Port for connecting a computer peripheral such as a synthesizer and is located on the sound card.

I: Monitor Port - The monitor is a very important computer peripheral that displays images and text generated by the computer. The monitor is connected to Port I which is a 15-pin female connector. (See diagram above). Click Here for great deals on Monitors.

J: Ethernet Port - The ethernet port accepts an ethernet cable which allows you to communicate on a network that runs Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol(TCP/IP).
This port resembles a regular phone jack but is slightly wider and is generally located on the Network Interface Card (NIC) or integrated on the motherboard.

K: Modem - The WORD 'Modem' is a contraction of the words Modulator-Demodulator. It is typically used to send digital data over a phone line. If you want to be able to surf the Internet or send or receive email, your computer system will need one. Click here to see my Modem Guide. On older PCs the keyboard socket will not be a five pin DIN socket, a fair bit larger than PS/2. If you only have a PS/2 keyboard, you can buy an adapter from most good PC suppliers.

Solve : monitor cable?

Answer»

is it possable to extend a monitor cable

thanks jerryYes buy a LONGER cable

http://www.faqs.org/faqs/sgi/faq/hardware/section-55.htmlDon't try an extender of some sort. Just get a longer cable and replace. Most monitor cables are hardwired into the monitor. The only option is an extender cable.I believe there is a length limitation. You'll always have a length limitation with any analogue signal, but there's no "fixed" limitation as such. You just have to try it and see. Signal QUALITY at the monitor end depends on many things - quality of the cable, external EMF interference, etc.

If you WANT to separate the PC and the monitor by more than a few metres THOUGH, your better option is simply to use two different PCs, with VNC software installed.

Solve : Motherboard Slot Upgrades??

Answer»

I have an INTEL MOTHERBOARD with pentium 4 processor but it does not have a pci or agp slot for a video card upgrade. is it possible to have either one installed onto my board so i can upgrade my video card or am i out of luck? You're out of luck.serpico145......Whats the model # of your mobo .........
I dont think you can add a pci or agp .........what slots do you have ? pci Express?

dl65 What is the model number of the motherboard? Then we can advise. (We don't read minds, however.) All i know at the moment is that it's a "Genuine Intel Motherboard" with Intel D 2.80GHZ 533MHZ CPU OEM and pentium 4 processor. The slots that exist are a light cream color and there are three of them, one on top of the other. I have tried a pci express with no luck.Download and run Belarc Advisor (free at www.belarc.com) It will identify the motherboard make and model. I am amazed you don't know this yet, but you soon will. Thanks MATE. Here's what i found: Board: Intel Corporation D845GVFN AAC77641-104
Serial Number: FCFN44604989That board has onboard Intel Extreme Graphics and three PCI EXPANSION slots, so PCI Express and AGP are out, and a PCI card is the only option.

If the onboard graphics are not enough (say for gaming) you can look at a high end PCI card, but for all normal functions, it should work just fine - internet, office, e-mail, etc.yeah it does work fine. But there are few games that won't run on the on board card. So, are you saying that those three off white or light beige colored slots are pci slots?Yes, standard PCI slots. Guaranteed.

Solve : idiotically formatted my 200GB hard drive.?

Answer»

Well I idiotically formatted my 200GB hard drive.

I don’t want to tell you a story, just the point that I accidentally formatted it, but the good thing was I stopped it at the thirteen percent of the format and shut down the computer, so I think I can salvage the rest of the data.

I know I lost a lot of data.

But I’m going to use some programs to recover it.

The point of the matter is that I cannot get the 200GB hard drive to load With my 80 gig hard drive that has the windows XP operating system.

and the tools I need to recover the data.

every time I try to load the 200GB hard drive with the 80 gig with the os.

I get an error “cannot load operating system”

the 80 gig will load by itself but as I said now with the 200 gig

I TRIED setting the jumpers to master and SLAVE also cable select and I even tried setting the 80 gig on the primary IDE cable And the 200 gig On the secondary IDE cable.

*censored* I still Can’t get it to load of with my 80 gig hard drive Which has the software I need to recover the data on my 200 gig Maxtor, without getting the error

“cannot load operating system”

I think when I formatted the hard drive it Installed windows drivers and files that are CONFLICTING with my 80 gig hard drives loading process.

It is there any programs bootable devices That I can use To force The 200 gig hard drive to load with the 80 gig which has the recovery programs and the os.

Solve : building a low bugdet pc?

Answer»

ok im building a REALLY low budget pc, and am wonderin if these parts are worth it:

this is the case:

this is the mobo:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813130519

this is the PROCCESSOR fan:

this is the ram:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820161614

this is the HDD:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822144126

the proccessor chip and cd drive i will buy used idk what im getting for them yet, but the price went up from 130.79 for all of that to 136.31. minus the HDD, my dad is paying for that, the proccessor, and combo drive. well tell me what u think about it, its just a low-budget pc, so i want to know what i can do with it when i get more moneyLooks like you did some good bargain hunting.

There are a few things I would do different.

I'll never again buy a mainboard with a VIA chipset for an Intel processor. There are always little glitches and devices that end up being incompatable or work poorly with the system. After using a couple mainboards with Intel chipsets, I find my hard drive doesn't even get fragmented half as fast. The rock-solid stability and lack of aggravation of having an Intel chipset in your mainboard would be worth 20 more bucks or so in my opinion. I have a socket 478 from GIGABYTE that I really like (Intel chipset, rock stable, not expensive) Maybe check out some GIGABYTE boards. Also, doesn't look like that board will take a Prescott CPU which may limit your choices.

Found this board for $63.50 shipped, less than $10.00 more than the board you were looking at. It has an Intel chipset and is Prescott ready. VERY worth the extra $10.00. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813128305

The memory you chose has a CAS latency of 3. There are others with a CAS latency of 2.5 for the same price or a buck more with no horror stories in the user reviews. There'd be a slight boost in performance by choosing one of those.

You can get the same hard drive in the 80GB flavor for $4.00 more in price, but $1.00 less shipping. Might as well get twice the drive for $3.00!!! http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822144122

Fan's gonna' be noisy, but the price is right... Just warning ya'...

Case looks like a great value. Might want to upgrade the power supply someday if you start adding more hard drives, big time video card, etc... This system could be VERY fast depending mostly on how much you spend on the CPU. Anything from a chip in the 2Ghz range with a 533 FSB to a chip in the 3Ghz+ range with Hyper-Threading and an 800 FSB... Add a good video card someday and it will be a very nice system, capable of pretty much anything.

Hope I've been some help. Don't know if you're looking for DVD playback capabilities or a CD / DVD burner... If you're just looking for a plain-old CD ROM drive, I have an extra I'd be willing to send you.

Good luck and have fun building your new system!!!

RoyIve found a good deal for building a PC outta used parts, someone that my dad knows is willing to sell me everything i need exept for the CD drive and the HDD for about $75. i know the mobo will be a 478 with a P4, and i will be getting the old Khypermedia CDR/RW drive outta my dads PC when he UPGRADES, and his 40 gig HDD, i have found some speakers to order with my extra cash, and i will also order a DVD ROM drive for it.

heres the speakers:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16836150008

i know people have complained of the left speaker, and "boomy bass", but i like alot of bass, and as long as the left speaker keeps workin ill be happy, even if it crackels.

And here is the DVD ROM drive:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827101668

it seems pretty decent...

for my b-day in August i will get another HDD, probably an 80, or an exteral drive, if its enternal i will use RAID drivers if my hardware is compatable, and then il have 120 gigs, or more. so ill be happy with that, i dont think i will ever fill it all, even if i start to use alot of it, then i can always get another HDD.

Thanks for the offer of the CD drive, but i think the CDR\RW drive should hold out another two or three years... or atleast i hope it lasts that long... I will post the exact specs on my pc when its built.
"if its enternal i will use RAID drivers if my hardware is compatable,"

You might want to research this notion a little.meaning? i might end up with slighly outdated hardware\software, so i dont know if the internal HDD will be compatable with raid drivers. or the mobo might not be, ect ect...
Why spend $20.00 on a DVD ROM, when you can get a super-fast, reliable, dual layer DVD / CD burner for $40.00 these days? Especially since you're spending way less than you planned... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827152058

Don't let your dad put his garbage in your system just so he can upgrade his without feeling guilty!!!... LOLreally i dont care what hardware is in it, all that i care about is that its functional and reliable. ive decieded to forget gettin speakers and just use my rigged cable to hook my pc up to my stereo, im gonna use the extra money to get three games:

ok, so my original plan has been totaly scraped, my dad is buildin him another, with my money, and givin me his other one. it has a MSI micro atx mobo, with a 2.6ghz celeron D proccesser,800mhz front bus, two front usb, 4 rear usb, 256mb of ram, 32x/42x/48x/52x K hyper media cd r/rw drive, 40 gig quantom fireball HDD, and a 64 bit video card, which we cant get to work , the case is a Micro atx full tower, has 4 external 5.25" bays, and one 3.5" external bay, 4 3.5" internal bays, a 350w psu, and a REALLY noisy 80mm rear fan which i will replace soon. o well, atleast its somthin... im gonna upgrade more later on, ill probably get a better case for one thing, a 256 vid card, another hdd, a one gig stick of ram (thats the first thing on my list), a DVD burner with Nero Express (thats the second), and a DVD rom drive so i can copy CD's DVD's and DVD ROM's (probably the last thing on my list next to the fan), and some random accessories, like a web cam with a built in mic, new monitor, keyboard, mouse, ect ect, for now i have to deal with the old POS hardware i have, luckly i do have an old 17" NEC biegh CRT monitor, its a pretty good monitor, CONSIDERING its age... i will give the old K hyper media drive to my bro for the PC my dads gonna build outta the old gateway sever sized tower, once i get the DVD burner. and ive got ALOT of old cards that run on the black slots from a time long since forgotten, but luckly i do have some PCI stuff thats worth keepin. and if you can name the long black slots on old mobo's then tell me what there called, ive been wonderin that for a long long time...

Solve : USB memory stick lost its format?

Answer»

G'day all

Xp is reporting that my 256Mb USB memory stick is unformatted. This is happening on several PC's.
The stick is not quite full and has been working happily for months. Great start to the new year.

I have important data on it that is not backed up. Is there any way to recover it, using something like Norton DD to RETRIEVE lost clusters, or something along those lines?

Any help appreciated, as I don't want to have to re-create all my lost work. Try another machine. Some FLOPPIES get that message if they were not formatted on an XP machine, but are trying to be read by one. They are totally usable on other machines with 98, etc. May be the same kind of deal.

Or as I always suggest, try a Linux LIVE CD and copy the files elsewhere with that.

http://iso.linuxquestions.org/distro.php?distro=58I have new info which looks promising.

I was able to DOWNLOAD a program that recovers picture files from memory sticks. This worked well on my device, which gives me hope that all the other stuff is intact.

I use my memory stick to run a DOS application which is a PCB CAD package. It has all my latest designs and library files as well as the application. Unfortunately my last backup is too old.

I need a program that will recover all these files as well.

Living in hope.See above. Thanks for the reply GX1_man

Are you able to get into that DRIVE? You may need to try something else. The download was for a bootable Linux CD which will boot your machine without Windows to see if you can access the drive.

Solve : cd rom not reconized as boot device?

Answer»

HELP!!!! I just helped a friend upgrade his cpu fron a celeron D2.2 533 fsb to a pentium 4 2.6 800 fsb
I recommended that he reforrmat after putting in the new cpu, but now it doresnt reconize the cdrom as a boot device i went into dos and MADE sure of the boot priority then to boot prefrence and everything is set like it should be, i have done this 100 times and never had thisa issue instead of telling me to boot to cd hit any key it just boots to windows like a rocket no matter what boot command i use I even disabled every boot device except the dvd/cd rom and i get the message reboot and select boot device, i set thwe bios to defualt and started over sevral times I am lost what else can i doAn interesting issue. If you're getting the prompt "press any key to boot from a CD" that would indicate to me that it's a bootable CD and that it's being detected and seen. My only assumption that the key is not being pressed fast enough, the boot CD is bad, or drive is bad.

We know the keyboard works because you've been in BIOS, No other drives are booting because they've been removed, has to be CD or drive.

Try borrowing an alternate bootable CD from a friend or co-worker and/or try an alternate CD drive. Is the CD ROM drive being detected as a CD ROM drive by the BIOS? Sounds like it's just not being detected. Installed right? BIOS settings right for the CD ROM drive? Try another CD ROM drive maybe...just to prove the point that computers have no common sense, we got the issued fixed but the least i could do is tell you how, now understan in his pc he has a cd rom and a dvd rom they are reconized in the bios and seem to work fine, I also have a cd rom and dvd in my computer the windows cd worked fine in my cd tried to boot every time, in either drive, how ever it would not try to boot when it was in either one of his drives, put it in my wifes pc and tried to boot from cd, so this would lead one to think the cd must be fine works in 3 out of 5 drives, his drives work fine except for it wont reconize them as a boot device after 4 hrs of cussing and screaming and pulling my hair out I gave up for the night. so my friend packed up his pc and went home with his tail between his legs, 20 min later he calls me, he is over joyed he has the copie of my disc that I had left there by mistake, [now this is a copie of the same disc that wouldnt work in his drives] here is the kicker he put the copie in and poof"HIT ANY KEY TO BOOT TO CD" AND YOU KNOW HOW IT ENDS , HE INSTALLED WINDOWS XP AND IS TROUBLE FREE???
so just a reminder that I leanred awhile back if trying something to fix a PROBLEM on a pc makes absolutly no sense , and by all counts would never possibly work, TRY IT ANY WAY, CAUSE NO ONE HAS EVER BOTHERED TO PROGRAM COMMON SENSE INTO A COMPUTER YET!
any way thx for all your help now and in the pastAsk him if he dropped the computer on the way home

Solve : HDD Full size not recognized?

Answer»

:-? Can anyone explain me what to do? Ok, I have archaic computer - PIII 633Mhz, with something like 400MB ram, - I can try to supply more info if neccessary, and I am using it only to burn my DVDs. RECENTLY I got new HDD Samsung SP 2014n PATA 200GB, and instaled it almost successfuly. Almost, because it's full size is not recocnized, but only 137 GB?! Why?! It is properly connected to primary IDE ultra DMA 5, I checked for bad sectors and nothing. I'm KIND of thinking this computer is not technicaly capable of seeing HDD biger than 137 GB, but WOULD like if someone much more knowledgeable than me (only STANDARD user) can confirm this (I still have one day lef to return the drive to the store and excange it for a smaller one) or explain me what to do.

Thanks,

SoneIt's an OS limitation. What OS are you using? WINXP with SP2 can do the fiull drive size. ANythjing less and you will have to set up multiple partition on the drive, which is not necessarily a abad thing. There are some workarounds, but do you need 200 gig all on one drive if you can getr 137 + 63, for instance?

Again all 200 gig will be available.Operating System and BIOS limitations - 137GB, 32GB, 8.4GB
