That said tho the DVD drive seems to be working fine with everthing else (even installing games) like music cd's ect. i tried playing battle field 2 last night and it started normally, i had about five secs of gameplay then all the graphics textures went all wierd and i could still play for a while untill it froze. On the other hand tho i can play DOOM 3 off my harddrive on high graphics with no problems! it's doin my nut in! please can anyone shed some LIGHT?

my set up...

AMD athlon 3000 XP 64bit
windows XP
extreme motherboard (unsure if thats it's right name)

YES, one post is enough. It gets confusing and is just rude to post the same question "all over the place".

An optical drive is not as fast as a disc drive, hence the lag and eventually freezing. Just run from the hard drive as God (and Id) intended. With that Graphics card, Battlefield 2 settings will have to be set low. My guess is you have set them to high and the cards over heating.

Battlefield 2 requires a good graphics card. I have a geforce 7800 gt and can run a few high setting and some medium. I used to have a geforce Fx 5900 and that wasnt even good enough to run the game on all medium settings.Frankie,

Do you run it from a DVD drive? That was the major concern I believe, hough your points are good.

Solve : Problems with Wireless.?

Answer»

I am operating on an Alienware Area 51m 5500. Laptop is a little under a month old... Well... I guess I'll state my problem then list all the details.

I am connected with Wireless. I was connected fine up until a little over an HOUR ago when I was disconnected. Now, I am used to the wireless going down for a second then coming back up, but when I checked to see if it was reconnecting, I noticed the little red X's over my Wireless icon. I clicked on it to have the Window pop up to tell me that my Wireless was OFF. I clicked the little drop-down box and selected ON. Then, to my surprise, I got a pop up box stating the following: "The Intel PRO/Wireless Network Connection is still DISABLED. Use your hardware switch to enable it." That's never happened before. So I clicked Help? and went through every possible troubleshooting multiple-choice question on my problem, only to get to the end and Troubleshooting can't help me. So I run upstairs to hop on another computer in the house and search for answers. I tried Turning off Wireless Zero Configuration because I read that it gives some people problems. No luck. I tried doing a system restore. Still no dice. I restarted several times hoping my wireless would be restored on start-up. Still no internet for me.

So um.. can someone help me? Please?

Processor: Intel® Celeron® M 370 1.5GHz 1MB L2 Cache 400MHZ FSB
Operating System: Microsoft® Windows® XP Media Center Edition 2005 with Service Pack 2
Motherboard: Alienware® Intel® 915GM + ICH6 Chipset
Memory: 512MB Dual Channel DDR2 SO-DIMM at 533MHz - 2 x 256MB
Hard Drive: 40GB 5400 RPM ATA100
Intel Wireless 2200 b/g

I am also one of four computers on this connection. We have Comcast Cable Internet and use a Linksys Wireless-G BROADBAND Router Model: MRT54G

I would contact Alienware pronto as you are still under warranty.Yeah, I EMAILED them before I posted. I also tried posting on their board and doing the whole messenger type help. No one answered. I got an email response saying they'd get back to me in 24 hours. Sigh. Some Tech support. I'm thinking I may just call my friend who works for Geek Squad. Might be my best bet.Why not a phone call? :-?

Solve : edo ram?

Answer»

can anyone HELP me with this query
at work i came across some edo ram , and was hoping that someone might be able to help me. both types are 72 pin
the first is, i have 2 sticks 8m X 32edo60, (e119697) i don't KNOW the manufacturer, could you confirm that this is 2 x 256mb ram ..........(it looks obvious )
and the second is 2 sticks of what i think may be 128mb ram the PART number i have is "siemens"hym324025s-60 .
i have been trawling over the net for the past couple of days, but i could'nt confirm that these were MB sizes of these sticks.
i hope someone can help me with this, i would be very grateful

thanks

jim256 EDO was rather a rare item. If google can't help you, then you may be SOL unless you find a computer that uses that type and plug it in and SEE what you get.

Solve : Question about Geforce 7800 GT series GPU?

Answer»

I have been shopping around for a GPU and have nearly made up my mind (I THINK). I now plan to buy either a BFG GEFORCE 7800 GT or a BFG Geforce 7800 GT OC. First: is this a sound decision? Second: Which of these TWO are better? Does the already overclocked version prevent further overclocking? I saw one review saying they were able to achieve 499 MHz at 1.2 ghz with the 7800 GT by overclocking it themselves. Any help you could offer would be great, thanks.

Solve : Bad Mobo????

Answer»

I recently ordered a few new parts to fix up an older computer of my mom's.

So I get everything put together in this Micro ATX case(nerve racking) and when I go to power it up, the processor fan starts up, along with the other fans, but the hard drive does not. Here's the wacky part: whenever I take the IDE cable out of the back of the hard drive, it powers up! I've switched cables, no LUCK. I switched PSU's, still nothing. I even swapped the hard drive in my computer with this one to see if it was that, but it works perfectly. The only possible thing I can imagine being WRONG with it now is the new motherboard. Is this thing DOA or what?

Has anyone had this type of experience before, because a friend of mine who is fond of computer BUILDING and I both are stumped. I plan to send the motherboard back tomorrow for an exchange if I can find no solutions.

The mobo is a Biostar Mainboard Socket 478, Micro ATX FSB800 for P4 series.

ANY help at all would be GREATLY appreciated. THANKS.

Solve : Help with Power Supply needed please?

Answer»

My PC is a 509GE Desktop (3ghz P4, 1gb ddr ram, 200 gb sata hd, dual layer cd-rom/dvd-rw, 300w power supply). I plan to purchase either a BFG Geforce 7800 GT or BFG Geforce 7800 GT OC card, both of which require a 350w power supply. I have also read the specs on these GPUs and they say they require a RATING of 26a at 12V. What would an ideal power supply be to buy? Do I need more than 350w total because of the specs on the GPU? Perhaps a link or two if you're already looking? Thanks to all for your help.1) Quality... True Power by Antec.
2) Big is good, BIGGER is better. 400 Watt minimum, more if you can afford it.

Where did you get that 26 A @ 12 V from? (Link please)
It doesn't sound right.Quick question about that power supply you listed and power supplies in general: How do I check for compatibility and size? Will that one fit in the 509ge or are the slots for power supplies fairly standard?

Also: This is the link I was looking at before I think.. It is listed for SLI though
http://www.bfgtech.com/7800GT_256_WC.htmlGeneral Badness....... Whats the form factor of your mobo ...... ATX ?

dl65 Quote

...... LOL you didnt check the link

Minimum System Requirements

>> Card with water block requires INTERNAL or external water cooled system, sold separately.
>> Intel Pentium®III or IV, Celeron®, AMD® Duron™ Sempron™ or Athlon™ class processor or higher
>> 128MB of RAM
>> Microsoft Windows XP
>> CD or DVD-ROM drive
>> 35MB available hard disk space
(50MB for full installation)
API Support Microsoft® DirectX®, OpenGL for Microsoft® Windows®
>> A minimum 400W system power supply (with 12V current rating of 26A or more)
>> A PCI Express compliant motherboard.
>> A vacant PCI Express slot adjacent the PCI Express x16 slot. This board occupies two slots: The x16 graphics slot and the one next to it
>> Two available hard disk drive power dongles (smaller floppy disk drive connector is not sufficient)

dl65 You may need to research this choice a little more.
I've seen a few different ratings for it.
A minimum 400W system power supply (with 12V current rating of 26A or more)
I've also see 120 Watts which equals 10 Amps.
I have a True Power 430 Watt which is more than the requirement but it's 12 Volt rail is only rated at 20 Amps. Go figure?I bet I could crank over a small car engine with 12V 26A. LOL!I'm not quite sure exactly... Currently looking online. I can't seem to find what motherboard corresponds to the 509GE via searching the internet. Is ATX not too standard? As there are 2 cards, perhaps 13A each is not too FAR out of the game.
You will have to search out a very large, quality PSU to meet the Amps they require.
What games are you going to play?General Badness.....Why don't you cantact Gateway .......they should be able to tell you ........ It's their brand ....

dl65 Yes I will definitely call Gateway and see about finding someone competent enough to answer a question or two Also: I checked the specs on an individual vid card I plan to buy and it says 12v current rating of 20a. Been looking at prices on these and... ouchQuote

Solve : Flash Drive detected but not shown?

Answer»

I'm new here
and while putting in my flash drive into the usb slot my computer acknowledges it EXISTS and has that LITTLE thingamabob that says "safetly remove hardware". Yet even when it's plugged in, I can't see it ANYWHERE, not in My Computer or anywhere really. I check the Device Manager and it says the device is working properly. I dont have this problem with my other computer running XP but I do on this one.
My specs are:
Windows Server 2003

Solve : new motherboard and cpu?

Answer»

Help! I have just purchased a NEW v4dp/v4du motherboard together with a Sempron 2.8 cpu but I cannot get the computer to recognise the new cpu,any help/ideas PLEASE. What do you mean it will not reconise the CPU? Was the motherboard made for that CPU? Is the CPU old? Does you new motherboard currently have a CPU?

It would be helpful to know how excatly it doesnt reconise your CPU if the motherboard is new. What pieces and Parts does it have? The board and cpu are COMPATABLE but on start up the bios shows the cpu as an athlon 1.2.Both items are newSome motherboards, even THOUGH compatible with a Sempron require the BIOS to be updated. Check with the motherboard manufacturer.

Solve : conner tape drives?

Answer»

Hi
I need to identify a conner tape drive!
Its the SIZE of a FLOPPY drive it is internal and has a 2gb tape
The no on the back reads "CT0073A" Im not shure where to plug it in.The connections on the rear suggest
that it goes in as a slave with the hard drive or it could GO in with the floppy but the conections on the ribben in the computer seem to small for the connections on the back of the drive any idea's
CliffCoould it be a SCSI tape drive?Hi
Thanks for your reply but is does not have a scsi
connection on the back of the drive. The only ribben that fits is the hard drive ribben from the motherboard.
CliffWell it is IDE then. Your first post said it didn't fit any of your existing connections. h :-? :-? :-?Hi again
Yes sorry about that!
I think it must be a ide drive, it has jumpers on the rear of the drive suggesting that it could be set up as a slave to the hard drive.Have you any idea where i could get the drivers for it.Also do you think it WOULD do any harm to connect it up and try and identify it
Thanks for your help
Cliff yes you can HOOK it up. Windows 2000 and later should identify it, but you will need to have appropriate backup software to get an use from it.

Solve : The Device Cannot Start?

Answer»

Hello,
I'm new. My speakers are not working. In fact the audio isn't working at all. I tried going the OFFICIAL route through Sony (out of warranty ) to help me and the Knowledge Article C304529 that they gave me did not resolve my problem. i tried every STEP but the last because the computer has RECENTLY be reformatted. I am hoping someone might be able to push me in the right direction.

I am using a Sony PCVRX730 with XP Pro that belonged to my sister. It had a virus. She got a friend to clean it. She gave the computer to me. I loaded the driver from Sony for the audio and got this message : "the device cannot start" also another time "cannot install this hardware an error occured" and "the name is already in use as either a service name or a service name display."

When in the control panel, in sounds and devices, volume...it says "no audio device." Under the audio tab...everything is greyed out and nothing is clickable.

I cannot tell if I have just DUG a deeper hole or if I am just hovering all around the problem and cannot see it. I am a relative newbie in this computer world. Thank you for any guidance.

-lokfreekFor some odd reason, the speakers may not be compatible with the computer. Are you 100% sure that the person who cleaned the virus got it all? Where they working on the computer at any point at all?Check in your bios to MAKE sure the onboard sound is enabled.
If it still doesn't work use your Device manager to remove all the sound entries & reboot.
Windows will/should detect the sound device & install drivers for you.
If it still doesn't work you will need to download drivers or install the ones you have.

Solve : What not to do?

Answer»

This wild ride I've been on could have been a LOT worse. Enter... my personal nightmare...

As you may know, I've PUT together the coputer I've always wanted. AMD Athlon 64 Processor ~2.2 GHz, 200 GB hdd, a GB of memory, nVidia 6600 video board, Creative Labs 7.1 Audio, the works! Very well advanced features, and I nearly lost it.

I kicked my front USB connection one day not too long ago. Unbeknown to me, I STRIPPED the USB port. Well, my dad tried to fix it, and I plugged in my game pad. I leave for about 5 minutes, and when I get back, my monitor is in power saving mode. I look down inside the transparent cover of my box, and see something you don't want to see unless you are in welding - an arc-flash. I quickly hit the power on my Surge protector.

My power supply had a blown fuse, the motherboard was history, but ironically, the fragile CPU was unharmed. Well, I bought a box that shows readouts of fan speeds (user-adjustable from the side of the box) temperature, etc. I got the $300 motherboard replaced under warranty. Only my internet connection, a total pain in the rear, needs to be set up. And it isn't cooperating. Maybe it's fried. That won't take long to diagnose, but still, it's not fun...

If I hadn't gotten into my room, it could have beena lot worse. I'm pretty much posting this as a warning to anone who tries to repair connections that were stripped: Don't do it. I had the foresight to get a warranty, but if I hadn't, the price of repair would have been jacked up three-fold. The box was $100. The motherboard would have been $300. The CPU, had it blown, would have cost another $269. I was lucky. It's not something I want to count on.

It can happen to you. Beware of stripped connections. Thanks for the info. If one of my USB ports goes bad, i won't THINK twice about forking out $35 for a USB expansion card.

*sigh*

My problem was that the cord was only long enough if plugged in the front. It's not a very long cord. I have to be able to use that front USB. Also, we (my folks and I) aren't sure if the plugging in the USB caused the malfunction, or if the ripping of the USB shorted the power supply fan. Either way, I was messed up. But I'm not unsatisfied with the new box. Not only does it tell me temp of CPU and fan speed, I can adjust the power supply fan. And it warns me before it redlines. I don't have it on full, but about 70% speed. (Redline starts at 50%)Just curious: Why isn't this a warning to NOT KICK YOUR COMPUTER instead of doing something so smart as to repair computer electronics yourself? Just a thought =)A: I kicked the USB cord, not the box.

2: I managed to blow up my computer trying to fix it myself.

III: I never claimed to have a 4-digit IQ and I sorta panicked, and wasn't thinking quite as clearly as I should have been

and

D: Things did turn out well in the end, did they not? I even have WiFi back. Thanks for the thrills!

Solve : Custom made PC?

Answer»

Regardless of the price, what will be the BEST combination of a custom made PC? What are the best respective part to choose? We will be here a while if we tell you every part...

For your video card, NVIDIA is supposed to be better, but I favor ATI.

For your processor, if you're into gaming, an AMD chip would be better than Intel...

RAM, I don't favor a specific brand. I would say 2GB if you're a really serious gamer.

HD, I like Maxtor. Go for no less than 160GB if you will be playing today's games.

FlameIt all depends on your uses for a computer (which you didn't state) and your budget. that's like asking "What's the best flavor of ice cream? or What's the best car? It depennds. Rum & Raisin ice cream & Ford cars are the best, everyone knows that. Chocolate Raspberry Truffle and Isuzu. But Ford isn't the best if you work there or have a family member who works there... (The big employee cut a bit ago) See, it depends

FlameIf you plan to get the most pimped out SYSTEM and you're going for gaming.. I'd go with a motherboard that supports SLI technology (with two evga nvidia 7800 gtx's), dual-core processor, 2+ gb ram, 200+gb HARD drive, dual layer dvd rw's, a power supply of 600+ watts, 19+ inch LCD monitor, optical mouse... Any other addons? lol maybe a nice sound card or something.. and some nice top notch games to play =)Michael.....Quote

Regardless of the price, what will be the BEST combination of a custom made PC? What are the best respective part to choose?
LOL .......BASED on your post .....Is this a test .......?
Well ok .......lets see ..........
Do you want the very latest and greatest?
Are you into d/L and burning movies ?
Are you a gamer ?......or do you just want to do what you do now ........
Play the odd game , surf the net , send and receive Email , Instant message .....yada yada yada .
Are you planning on using this machine for BUSINESS or pleasure ?
Are you planning on building this pc yourself ......and do you have the knowledge and EXPERIENCE to complete the build ?

Once you decide what you want to use it for....we can probably point you in the right direction .

dl65
Sorry guys for late response to the thread...been busy..

As I mentioned in the first post, let's assume that my budget is unlimited.
Therefore we can go for the latest and greatest.
And the combination is to be custom built.

I use the computer to play games (all kind), graphical work (2-D & 3D), multimedia editing (audio & video), programming, surf net of course, and what else....basically that's it.

Why not? Be sure you have a right driver.
Did you have that question mark before the reinstallation? Check sound card, cabel so they placed FIRMLY. Open case and monkey inside with them.
ps:check for sound icon not muted and sound properties too.You need to identify the sound card or chip, then download the appropriate drivers and install.

What computer or motherboard make/model or sound card do you have?

Solve : Adding a new HD??

Answer» HI,
I set up a raid 10 ARRAY using 4 hd's and an LSI 4 channel pci board. I partitioned the drives into a C,D, and E drives, with the C drive being 5 gbs. That has turned out to be too small for what goes to the C drive ( restore points, TEMP files, etc.) Program and data files go to the D and E drives. I would like to hook a 30 gb HD up to the Motherboard through the IDE channel on the mb, and make that the C boot drive. Is it possible to change the C boot drive to the NEW HD and reassign the 5 gb's to drive F, and keep all the settings and info that are on the C drive now? Can I just hook the drive up, mirror the OLD C and the new C, then reboot? Will the OS look to the onboard IDE channel before the PCI board? I am running XP Pro. Thanks in advance.

Solve : Unable to boot from CD?

Answer»

I've tried every solution in the Unable to boot from CD section and the CD-rom has power but does not work section, except two and none seem to help me at all.

I have a virtual CD drive on my COMPUTER, and I wonder if it's trying to boot from that as well.

The two solutions I have not tried are to use a boot disk to reinstall the CD-rom DRIVERS, and to get a CD-rom cleaer.

When I did a test of the SYSTEM, it said the drive was working, but when it tried to test CDs, it said there were none in the system. I'm thinking that the CD laser might be dirty, which is why I plan on going to buy a cleaner.

Oh yes, another difficulty, all the passwords on my computer have been changed, and subsequently forgotten, which is why I need a cd to boot properly. What operating system?

Sometimes a CD drive's optics just die, although the drive may STILL openn and close. I would try another CDROM drive, just for a test, and see if that fixes it, before looking for a more exotic solution.

It sounds like you may be re-installing your OS soon anyway due to the other problems.Lach..... how about sharing with us what it is your trying to do ....or is that classified ? The crystal ball has a crack in it

dl65 Sorry, kind of frantic. Going crazy trying to solve this.

It's just a little local computer, and the system is XP. Been on vacation, and my mind's on vacation as well, and my mind was on vacation as well. Just a little home computer, and I was trying to get on to reset the password with the XP reinstallation disc, but then found the disc wasn't working.

I just came back from getting a disc cleaner, which didn't help at all. Figured I might as well try, since the site suggested it.

I was planning on trying a new cd drive tomorrow, after I can grab it from my dad's place. If that doesn't work, and the CD driver reinstallation doesn't work, I think I'm pretty much screwed. My last option would be to format the computer, and hope the cd-rom works now.
Went to fry's bought a new cd drive, and used the solution from http://pubs.logicalexpressions.com/Pub0009/LPMArticle.asp?ID=305 . There was a slight error when I typed in nusrmgr.cpl, and it would TELL me the user account was not recognized, so I used control userpassword2 and it worked like a charm.Glad you are up and running again!

I used my recovery CD to fix this problem before but I don't want to use it everytime this error occurs >.<

System Specs:
Intel Celeron M 1.3ghz
RAM: 512
OS: Windows XP home Edition
CDROM: Yess
Floppy: No
Model: Toshiba Satellite M35X series

I just want to know if you think it is a major problem or something minor. The first time I didn't think much of it but the second time 2 months after the first incident... Im getting a little concernedAre you connecting with an ethernet cable or with wireless?I think I figured it out... either my Hard drive fell loose or it is broken >.< Now I just need to open it up... anyone know how to open a laptop? The laptop can't detect the hard drive. Found that out when I used the XP CD.. (No Hard Disk Detected) How could this happen I didnt even drop it I mean i take it in and out of the computer case alot that woundnt cause the hard drive to fall loose would it?The other possibility is that the hard drive has died. I HOPE not, but.....

How old is the laptop? Still under warranty?I know its under warranty still not even a year old yet.. and i brought 2 year warrantie you know because college and accidents. Maybe the cable feel loose I do hear the hard drive... or something I guess its the CPU.. I think the cables might of just fallen off I wonder what screw should i unscrew dont want to pay anyone to fix a simple problem if it is one and I dont want to BREAK mey first laptop like i did with my first desktop in less then a year SOMETIMES if you monkey with them you can void your warranty! I would exercise that option.

Solve : Right Forum for Printer Issues??

Answer»

I hope so, I need help. Lexmark X6150...started getting Hardware Error: 0502. Lexmark website shows this to be problem with cartridge carrier. Site instructs you to clean CLEAR decoder strip behind cartridge carrier, make SURE strip is located within "followers" on back of carrier. I have done this probably 30 times over the last few weeks...might print 20 pages, maybe 2 before it happens again. In a call to tech support, through broken ENGLISH, I'm told that my printer is beyond its usable SERVICE life when that particular error message appears. [emailprotected]*&$ ! While the printer is about 2 years old, I have changed the cartridges maybe 4 times.
Any help out there? It's tax time, and I still have to finish my yearend books.
If I have to buy a new printer, I'm through with Lexmark. Any suggestions on replacement brands that won't break the bank?
Thanks for any help given.I would give up on that printer and that brand. HP and Epson both make durable units that are cheaper to operate with better support. Sorry. In addition to HP and Epson, Canon.

Solve : Horrible Picture Quality?

Answer»

well right now im gonna go ahead and head off to bed, try to get back on here tommorow... if not i'll leave wuts going on with itSomeone will be here.We never did hear about the computer. It is starting to sound like an old Deskpro EN with an ONBOARD ATI Rage Pro onboard 4 meg AGP, but we need to get the model # confirmed!well, this is all the information on the computer i can find that seems useful

Computer Name: X9T1I7
CPU Type: Intel Celeron-A; 400 MHz
Motherboard: Asus MEBVM
Video Adapter: STANDARD PCI Graphics Adapter
3-D Accelerator: ATI 3D-Range Pro; NVIDIA GE Force 3 GTS

yes it is reading both of them.... wut can i do? :-? :-? :-? :-? :-? :-?The ATI video is DEFINITELY built in. Some models disable that when another graphics adapter is plugged in, others require the onboard video to be disable in the BIOS or with a jumper on the board.

Sounds like an HP pavillion computer. There is an option in the bios to disable on board video, and if I remember corectly, there is also a jumper on the mobo that you need to change (on page 14 of the manual I think) and this will allow you to use an agp video card.

Here is a link to find the manual:

http://www.motherboards.org/manuals/p/ASUS-MEB-VM/451.htmlok im still confused... wut am i supposed to be doing? At this point read the manual. I gave you the link and the probable page. I can't read it for you.

You want to "disable the onboard video". Let us know what you learn.ok i read it all and surprisingly im still completely lost and dont understand anything it is saying??look at the diagram and locate the three pins for VGAEN. note what two pins are covered and REMOVE the plastic jumper and cover the middle pin and the one at the other end. There is a picture so yuou can see right where it is!

It is right above where he flat grey IDE cables connect to the motherboard from the hard drive and CDROM drives. THe round CMOS battery is on the other side of the IDE controller ports.

I can't reach it for you, but there it is!!!!!

Solve : Laptop Fan Runs Constantly/a/c power supp hot?

Answer»

I have a HP OmniBook 600 (old huh?) and the fan seems to run constantly. At the same time I notice that the a/c power supply GETS alarmingly hot. I just replaced the battery because it recently died, but I noticed the fan running prior to replacement of the battery. My question is this: what could be CAUSING this? Dirty innards...HD going bad...or needs new fan? WOULD appreciate some help. ThanksIf you can get to the fan and see if it is dirty that would be GOOD, but some of those HP's just run the fan at max all the time. What processor is in there? Are you the original owner?Make sure you use it on a solid surface where there is no chance of any vents being blocked.

Solve : Dead wireless mouse?

Answer»

The wireless mouse on my 2nd pc died a few days ago, so I bought a new wireless keyboard / mouse combo to replace it and now find that this one isn't WORKING either.
The keyboard works, not the mouse.
My PC runs xp professional, version 2002 - pack1
AMD athlon xp2000=, 1.67ghz
512 ram
40gb hard drive

When I installed the new mouse I also installed the drivers that came with it - using the arrow keys to navigate.
Sadly, I find this method very limited, like I can't get to Control, Mouse to check settings.
I also TRIED plugging in a couple of older cord type mouses (mices?) but nothing worked.
All help / advice will be very much appreciated
Thanks in ADVANCE,
Springbok.

Have you tried both types, usb and ps2 mice? Or is it just one particular type of mouse that doesnt work?Yep, both types, but still no luck.Delete ALL mice in Control PANEL/System/Device Manager and reboot with a real PS/2 mouse until you get everything loaded, etc.

A real mouse is always a handy thing to have when the "gadgets" break. Hi GX1_Man, thanks for the info, but just one problem.

I already tried to get into control panel using the arrow keys, but with no joy. So, how is it done?

Someone suggested I might have wiped the mouse drivers off. Could that be my prob?

Springbok.
Even with the wireless mouse drivers removed or whatever, a PS/2 mouse should be recognized if connected before Windows starts (unless for some reason it is inactivated in the BIOS). You may want to check there.Ok, I plugged a ps2 mouse in and booted up, the mouse worked! Huge relief that.
I noticed a Spyware Doctor window (small) come up with "Error while creating the log: Class not registered" message. Do you think this could be anything to do with the mouse prob?

I deleted the driver for the wireless mouse, then re-installed and re- booted. No joy.

Springbok

Hi GX1_Man, I just noticed something.
In Mouse Properties/hardware/Driver it shows the Driver as a
Microsoft PS/2 Mouse

File details -
(C:WINDOWS\System32\DRIVERS\i8042prt.sys) - highlighted

also

(C:WINDOWS\System32\DRIVERS\mouclass.sys)

Wondering what happened to the driver I just installed from the CD.
Did you reboot the machine after the installation?Yes, and I also closed it down overnight, today it is just as it was in my last post above. (I'm on GMT)

The ps2 mouse works fine, and so does the wireless keyboard in usb socket.

The sender for keyboard and wireless mouse use the same usb socket, but only keyboard works.

At least I have some control now, but there's obviously something wrong somewhere.

Your help / time is appreciated by the way

SpringbokYou can try the keyboard in the mouse's previous socket to see if it works there. I would be looking at a defunct mouse, rather than a bad USB port, but who knows.

I use PS/2 peripherals and plan to continue. Not cutting edge gizmos, but they ALWAYS work.

Glad you are functional again. I think you might be right GX1_Man, anyway, I'll stick with the ps/2 mouse 'til I find the problem.

Can't swap mouse to another socket - keyboard and mouse use the same socket.

There are a few niggling probs with this PC, so might do a full restore!
Thanks a lot for your help/advice - very much appreciated.

Solve : Problem with CD/DVD drive?

Answer»

Last NIGHT I attempted to watch a DVD on my Dell Inspiron 600m laptop but WITHOUT realizing it the disc wasn't completely snapped onto the spindle in the disc tray. I closed it and naturally it jammed up. Without turning the computer off, which I realize was a mistake, I did the paper clip trick and popped it OPEN. Now the drive won't open or recognize CD's when I pop it open and put one in there. The little green light on the tray still flashes so I'm guessing it still gets power. I would APPRECIATE any HELP. By the way, I"m running XP. Thanks.A shot in the dark, try re-booting.I've rebooted several times but to no avail. My buddy had the same type of DVD drive in his comp so I popped it in mine and it worked fine. Do you guys think my drive is just shot? You could have damaged it if you REALLY jammed it in there. The fact that a different drive works make this one suspect.

Solve : Yellow Stripes Permanently On My SCreen!!?

This Surely is the mother of all my problems. I was playing FM2006 hardcore most of YESTERDAY, then i switched to CS for a quick match, and this happened to me LIKE two rounds in!!

(It's Quite hard to tell whether you can acctually see the corruption on this picture as i'm veiwing it with the problem :s)

This has happened once before, last time it went away after a bit of fiddling and a restart. Don't remember exactly what i did to fix it that time, but even so its not going away this time!!

Help PLEASE!Remove and reseat video card. If that doesn't do it, then reinstall video drivers. Thanks for your quick reply dude, but it hasnt helped. Ive already tried that once, but i did it again ANYWAY, and still nothing. Should i just talk to ATI about this? i've not had the card LONG (not long had it replaced ..) do you think they'll be able to get it fixed/replaced?Yes, I would hold out for a replacement if it is still under warranty. It depends if the warranty is through ATI or the retail outlet. Where did you buy it and when? Originally i BOUGHT it from Overclockers, but it was faulty and had it replaced once before ... i guess there wont be much problems ...

Solve : replace or repair??

Answer»

I have an old PC with a discontinued Soyo board, and an AMD chip. It would need a new hard drive to hopfully get it running again. Does it make sense to fix this boat anchor and squeeze ANOTHER year out of it? We only use it for office work, and internet. With a new one you could do office work, internet & play games too. While HDS are relatively cheap these days, you might be able to pick up a used complete system for about the same cost as a new HD. Check the classified adds in your local paper. BETTER YET, if there's a freeby classifieds-only rag in your area, chech that too. I've seen adds for PIII, 600MHz systems -- cpu box, monitor, KB and mouse, loaded with Win 2K or later -- for as little as $50, while later systems (PIV, >1GHz) go for as little as $350 complete with a printer.

At those prices it's hardly worth the effort to resurrect a "boat anchor". Or a used hard drive 10 gigs or SOO is about $10. i say resurrect it!

Solve : Powers but I get a black screen and blinking LED?

Answer»

I have a problem. I used one of those air can things to blow some dust out of the inside of my computer and I also used a little battery vaccuum on it. I live in the desert and we get a LOT of dust. Now, when I turn it on, it turns on, the fan is running and the power light is steady green, and it sounds like it is starting up, but instead of the sign on screen, the screen is black and the MONITOR light and keyboard num lock lights are both flashing green. It is a Compaq Presario 5300 with a celeron processor, 128 MB RAM, 80 GB HD, running Widows XP Pro. That's about all I know! I am not super-tech-y lol, but I know enough about the workings of a computer to installl a new HD (about a year ago), and a new CD burner (about 8 months ago). My next step was to add some more RAM, but I don't know where I stand now. Any help is very much appreciated!
Lyndsie Vacuums create ESD, so hopefully you didn't disturb anything. Did you SHOOT it directly into the fan blades while spinning? Also not a good idea. Hopefully you just knocked something loose. Make sure the fan is firmly attached and spins when the computer powers up. Remove and reseat the RAM modules and any cards in slots. Let us know. Thank you SO much!! All I had to do was change the RAM module to the other SLOT, and now I'm back on the sign in screen!! I thought it was going to be more complcated lol! Newbie here, OBVIOUSLY Glad you are up and running.

Solve : Monitor turns off.?

Hello people, can someone help.
My p.c has just started going all funny.
1 - The monitor. (A Daewoo LCD screen 17inch) will turn just turn off on it's own. And then a box will appear saying "No Signal".
The green light turns to ORANGE and thats it.
A reboot will sort it out until it happens again. Don't know how long it will be until it happens again.
I have windows X.P
AGP graphics card.
It's an oldish COMPUTER.
Could it be a Graphics card problem as the monitor is only 4 MONTHS old and there is life there when it all goes black.

Quote

...Could it be a Graphics card problem as the monitor is only 4 months old and there is life there when it all goes black.
Probably graphics cardd. Maybe overheating, SOMEWHERE ELSE. Check for good cpu fan seating.
I have an Athlon chip, probably about 6 years old. So it could be overheating.
The graphics card isn't a good one I know that.

How do you know my isp and is that number my isp address?
How did you know that? Also check for good graphics card seating. Remove and firmly reseat in the socket. Double check for a snug connection to the monitor.

(P.S. Everyone sees their own IP address. We don't see yours!)I had that problem one day. it took me off guard. it happened after Battlefield 2 did some crtazy stuff with my video settings, therefore changing some things that I didn't want to be changed. Next time i loaded the computer, it freaked out. I had to go into the computer in safe mode (by holding F8 or F5 during the loading) and that allowed me to roll back the video drivers. I can't remember exactly what brought it back. I think i uninstalled Battlefield 2, too. But going in through safe mode was what saved me.

Solve : Help! Memory Problem!?

Answer»

Hey. I just purchased a stick of 512 mb DDR 3200 RAM from the local computer store. However, when I went to stick the ram into my computer, it makes a beeping noise. I figured it was just in wrong, however I took it out, REPLACED it with my other strip, and it was fine. I did this in all the positions with my other ram, including putting the newly purchased ram in the sockets. So, basically, it was fine if I had 2 strips of 512mb DDR 3200 ram in, but wouldn't work with 3.

If you have a solution to this problem, please respond. (With this Ram, I should have 1.5gb ram. But only 1g works)

TyGo to www.crucial.com and see what you should have gotten for that particular machine and compare to what you did get. Also consult the manufacturer's web site to see what type of memory and configuration are supported on that motherboard. you didn' give any information regarding this, and Miss Cleo is off on Mondays.

Though crucial may not be the cheapest, it is GUARANTEED compatible, has a lifetime warranty, reasonable prices and prompt shipping. Did you get that? http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.asp?Mfr%2BProductline=Giga-Byte%2B+Motherboards&mfr=Giga-Byte&tabid=AM&model=GA-K8NSC-939&submit=Go

Hmm, It says it should be able to hold as much RAM as there is slots, but still, whenever it LOADS with 1.5g, it beeps and the screen wont load.

Quote

I don't see that on the crucial site at all, but I do see various CL and voltages listed, so either you have an incompatibility there, or you have to install it in pairs (you do for DDR FUNCTION on Intel chips).

What are the specifics of the chip you bought and what you had? Did you check the motherboard manual?

Solve : bios password and can't use keyboard?

I have a BIOS password, which I added yesterday. It was working fine. Today, I go to turn on the computer, and the login prompt comes up...only now I cannot type letters or numbers, so am unable to enter a password. It RECOGNIZES ENTER, but nothing else that I can tell.

I tried using a different keyboard...that did not work either. Any ideas?shaeleigh..... Are you refering to the bios password or the Windows password ?

dl65 If a BIOS password, and not a laptop, just REMOVE the battery for 10 minutes. That's about how secure that is.

Solve : .second hard drive?

Answer»

I'm very new to this updating thingy.
I have installed a second hard drive in my comp but when i look at "my computer" it doesn't show up.
I wanted to install the second hard drive as i have some very old programs that are DOS based and would like to have the second hard drive formatted as FAT32 in dos.
My first hard drive is formatted NTFS and runs XP pro.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated as i am like a duck out of water with computer stuff. The added hard drive MUST be jumpered as slave and the original hard drive as master (which it probably is) on the same cable. The jumpers are on the back of he drive next to the data cable. What make and model drives are these? What is the computer make/model?It's a Maxtor diamond maxplus 9, 80gb ata/133 HDD
On the case it says "no jumper = DS Slave" ,so i took the jumper out.
Thanx for your replyIt sounds like you're up and runnning. Please confirm so I can consider this thread closed. Still doesn't find the new hard drive when I start up the comp :-?Does it show up in the BIOS? What computer or motherboard make/model?It shows in the bios (cmos?)
and it shows as a second hard drive in Hardware when i go to the system menu, but the name of the hard drives are exactly the same, but it doen't show up in "my computer".
I can only see the one hard drive in that.
I know it isn't formatted, as i cant POINT the computer to it to format it.
The motherboard is a Matsonic MSKM
processor is AMD 2200
Graphics card is radeon 9200E
CPU frequency is 133mhz

Solve : please help! external hardrive?

Answer»

Hello all i am new to COMPUTER help. I recently ran a norton anti-virus scan on my desktop in fear of that worm going around. I had my external hard drive hooked up to it when it did it. My hardrive is a Maxtor 3100 80gb hard drive. After running the scan and cleanup options my external hardrive no longer works. When i plug it into the desktop the computer recognizes it but when i click on the hardrive slot in the my computer screen it says that its blank. It even gives me the little screen showing how much free space is on it and how much space is in total and STILL when i click on it it says its blank. This is an emergency b/c im a 3rd yr animation student whos about to graduate and all of my projects are gone. Anyone with any help or suggestions or anything will be deeply appreciated. Im running windows xp on my computer. thank you. :' :'With execption to the space, we have the same series Ok back to the point, see if GoBack helps... Do you have norton GoBack?

FlameIf it's THAT critical, you could contact a data recovery service before monkeying with it. If not, you can try some of the suggestions that will be posted.

You should try it on another computer first, preferably one that can BURN to CD or DVD.

I just got norton SECURITY off my brother b.c of this doomsday virus supposedly going around. what i feared might happen to my work happened anyway. where on the norton menu would go back be? im lookin and i dont see it.

how do i get in contact with one of these data recovery services? how do i go about it? is it an online service or do i have to take it somewhere.

all hardrives die eventually? *censored* i wish the guy at staples wouldve told me that. he told me that, and i quote "this thing'll last way longer than cds ever will" guess not huh?

i tried it on my bros laptop and and a friends desktop and still no results. i went to the device manager and it only lists my internal hardrive. im so confused.
thanks for the input. It's not cheap, but that stuff sounds pretty important. Check some services out. THey have to be in possession of the hard drive.

Solve : USB question?

Answer»

I recently had WIN98 reloaded on my system do to my deleting files I knew nothing about. (not sure if he knew much more, but it's running). When I plugged in my camera to my usb port, it recognizes it. My problem is: 1) When I TURN the camera on, I used to get new drive for it to run (in this case, drive F). Now, I it doesn't give me a new drive. When I click the camera ICON, the program starts and says connecting to camera but I get an error:

I) Camera plugged in and power on. (yes)
2) Change port setting (what's this and where?)
3) LOWER communication speed (same speed as before)
4) Camera mode dial is set to OUTER connection mode. (what's this and where?)

Help, not sure what I may have wrong. If you need more info, be kind, I'm a little techno challenged.

thanks,

Steveh

Solve : Bootable hard drive?

Answer»

I'm thinking (ouch) of installing an old harddrive with WIN 98 on it. It may not work what with it being in a completely new computer (but it has before!) but I would LIKE to know how to make it bootable so you can choose whether to boot from the harddrive with xp already installed or the ONE with win98 at startup. i'm asking wiithout trying because to TEST this i would need to BUY an IDE to SATA cable anyway (~£22.00) because my motherboard does not support IDE but I do have some software on there that I would like to use but would be expensive to buy again (i.e. Sibelius).

Solve : Mouse frozen on desktop but works fine on laptop?

Answer»

Yesterday, my old keyboard totally gave up the ghost (no power) so I installed a new one & today, the optical mouse pointer froze solid in the middle of the screen. I did a reboot and it WORKED long enough to at least get the computer booted, but then froze again and this time, nothing I've tried has helped.

The mouse works fine when I plug it into my laptop so I know there are a number of things that could be wrong with the desktop itself since the mouse must be okay, but I don't know how to get into the computer without a mouse. I have a *lock* on the desktop.

Now we are coming down to tax time and my last three years of returns are on the PC and I need it soon for the carryovers.

I have a love/hate relationship with these machines. Until I hear from someone, I will continue trying whatever I can think of.

Are these real PS/2 peripherals, or some sort of USB or wireless things? If the latter, do you have PS/2 equipment to test with/We are already into the tough questions. Both my mouse and keyboard have round plugs so I know they are not USB and they are not wireless. I guess that would make them PS/2 peripherals and I have no idea what equipment they have to test these ports (? or whatever they are called).

Should I go out and find the test equipment? I will google to see what I can come up with.

Thanks so much for helping.Go into Control Panel/SYSTEM/Device Manager and delete the drivers for the mouse and keyboard and reboot. Let us know what you find.

What happened prior to this disaster?Prior to this disaster, I was gone for a week and had unplugged the backup system from the wall and turned it off. When I first tried to BOOT it up, nothing happened so I had to turn it off at the switch and that time it booted up without a problem. That was on Saturday evening. Suddenly, the power for my keyboard went out and I couldn't get it to come back on. I had been having TROUBLE with some of the keys so already had another board ready to go and I installed it.

All went well until late this afternoon and the mouse froze when I was playing a card game. I thought maybe I just needed a new mouse and would buy one tomorrow, but since it works with this laptop I am now using, I don't see how it can be the mouse.

There was a serious storm and power outage while we were gone and that messed up my TV and its components even with a battery backup, but this computer and the peripherials were totally unplugged. I RETURNED to both computer and replayTV trouble and am beginning to think I am too far over my head with today's electronics.

I cannot get into the computer to delete the drivers since I can't figure out how to get past the *lock* I have on it. I can't click on my user name so I can enter my password and am clueless as to how to do this without a mouse.

Thanks for your help.Turned out to be very easy to fix. Went to WalMart, bought a cheap two-button mouse, plugged it in and all is well again.

I was afraid I would have to hire one of those people who come in, do all the same stuff you've already done and charge $100 for not fixing it.

Thanks for your help.Quote

Solve : modem/internet connection problem?

Answer»

Hello. I am having difficulty making a connection to the internet. The problem lies within my pc and a possible missing file, perhaps. Maybe a .dll file. I installed a new modem this morning and still no connection. However, upon installing I received this error message: 'C\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\{3f92abbb-6bbf-11d5-b229-002078017fbf}Tools.dll'

I'm not sure if it corelates to the problem. I tried deleting/re-installing/updating my old modem driver and no luck. Would it have anything to do with the 'interupt' with the 'port?' Not sure how to approach that. But, within the device manager/modems, I TESTED the modem(old modem) and received a message that a problem may exist with the 'interupt' and 'port.' I appreciate any advice. If more info is needed, just let me know.

Thanks...!! 8-)More info is always needed. Computer or motherboard make/model, OPERATING system, modem make/model, etc. Right, we need to at least know what operating system you have installed. If it is WINDOWS XP, have you used Windows Update to install Service Pack 2?

Other questions:

* Did the old modem ever work with this operating system? (If so, what change occurred right before it stopped WORKING?)
* Did the new modem ever work with this operating system in the past?
* Have you checked the device status in the Windows Device Manager? (If so, what error code number do you see there?)
* Are the "lights" on the modem flashing when you try to connect to the internet, and are they green or some other color?
* Have you tried to ping 127.0.0.1 at the command prompt window?
* Have you tried disabling the Windows XP firewall, or any other firewall?
* Have you tried to remove the new modem and install the old modem adapter card to see if you can then connect to the Internet?

Please let us know,
Doc
Whoops. Sorry for not including the pc info.

Dell Dimension 2350
Windows XP
updated with Service Pack 2

Modems:
COM1 Standard 56000 bps
COM3 Creative Modern Blaster(the one I installed this morning)

Did the old modem ever work with this operating system? (If so, what change occurred right before it stopped working?) Yes. When I first bought the pc a few years ago. Switched to dsl, then LAN line when I moved. Haven't used the modem in quite a while.

Did the new modem ever work with this operating system in the past? No.

Have you checked the device status in the Windows Device Manager? (If so, what error code number do you see there?) Working properly.

Are the "lights" on the modem flashing when you try to connect to the internet, and are they green or some other color? N/A. as it's an internal modem.

Have you tried to ping 127.0.0.1 at the command prompt window? Forgot how to get com. prompt window for that.

Have you tried disabling the Windows XP firewall, or any other firewall? Yes. Still not working.

Have you tried to remove the new modem and install the old modem adapter card to see if you can then connect to the Internet? Not sure how to do that.

However. In the Modem Properties window, Diagnostics tab, I clicked the 'Query Modem' button. Results: 'communicates w/modem.' 'The modem failed to respond. If it is an internal modem(it is), VERIFY that the interrupt for the port is properly set.

Log:
- Modem inf path: mdmgen.int
- Modem inf section: Gen556F
- matches ID: moto1_gen
- Intitializing modem
- DSR is low while initializing the modem. Verify modem is turned on.
- CTS is low while initializing modem.
- Send: AT
- Timed out waiting for response.

Does any of this help?

Thanks.

Yes, it's good information! Thanks, and sorry i took so long to respond. Work and family keeping me busy.

OK, to test if the modem is really working:

1. Click Start and Run.
2. In the Run dialog box, type cmd and click OK.
3. In the command window, type ping 127.0.0.1 and press the ENTER key.

Do you get four replies or a message that no reply was received?

Other questions:

* I'm unclear about something: Are you trying to use the internal modem that came with the computer, or a new modem expansion card?

* If you have added a modem expansion card, did you disable the internal modem in the BIOS setup?

* Did you install the latest Windows XP device drivers for the modem from the manufactuer's Web site?

* Do you see any resource conflicts with the modem in Device Manager?

* Have you installed the network setup software that your Internet Service Provider sent to you?

* Have you called your ISP for assistance?

Let us know,
Doc

One other observation: COM1 and COM3 both use the same interrupt request (that is, IRQ4). Therefore, neither modem will likely work. You must change the IRQ for one of the modems if you keep both installed. Most modem expansion cards are plug and play, and will use IRQ steering. Installing the correct device drivers for the new modem should give it the correct IRQ, etc.

Keep in touch,

Login as Admin, or...

Open the regedit and go to --

See if it has read\write permissions

I changed the permissions and that did the trick!
