Solve : can i add an external hard drive ??

Answer»

My computer is a 20GB hard drive with 19 used and 1 FREE.Without buying a new computer, can i buy an external hard drive [80 GB for 100$] and ADD it to my computer and free up some space on my c drive by MOVING some programs over to it ?Sure. I don't think External Hard Disks take up any space, and you can certainly find a way to transfer files over.

FlameIf you transfer files you can run into problems because Windows will STILL be looking for them on the C drive (the internal one). You may have to reload the programs again, specifying the external drive. Data files, on the other hand, are no problem.

kamikazeKamikaze:

Have you tried adjusting the brightness and contrast?

Is there anything DISPLAYED on the LCD, such as a blinking cursor, or is it completely black even when you press keys on the keyboard?

Have the fans always sounded this loud?

Flamethe fans only got loud when the computer is first TURNED on, and then it gradually dies down. The monitor stays blank even when the computer is first turned on. but I dont think its a problem with my monitor, i think the computer itself is the problem.
kamikazeKamikaze:

Take it to a repair shop and have them test the power supply with a multimeter.

Solve : Won't read harddrive?

Answer»

I RECENTLY CHANGED my motherboard, cpu, and ram and I'm trying to reuse my old harddrive but when it tries to boot to windows I GET the message that windows didn't start correctly and it reboots. I've tried safe mode but it seems like it reads 0 sectors and then shows some files but nothing happens. Could it be the way my bios is setupWindows on the old hard drive is EXPECTING to find the old motherboard. You will have to reinstall Windows so it will add drivers for the new motherboard.

If you're running XP Home on this you'll probably need to re-activate it as well.Quote

Backdated is correct. In fact, i've had to reactivate Windows XP after installing Service Pack 2 (Billy's boys just don't trust anyone)!

Solve : Hard drive acess?

Answer»

On windows XP with mulitply users on one computer, is there a way to allow only one user use a certain hard drive, and not allow any other ACCOUNT have access to it? :-?Win XP Pro, with simple FILE sharing turned OFF: Right-click on the hard drive, CHOOSE "sharing & security". Click the security tab. You then have the privileges settings for the root of the drive.

Bear in mind that anyone with physical access to the computer can in theory bypass XP's standard security (with a reinstall/repair).What about with WIN XP home? The same would be TRUE for win xp home. We'd have to check with ROB on that one.

Solve : Old Hard Drive In New Computer?

Answer»

:-?
Ok I need some more help I started out with an on off SWITCH that did not work then a bad motherboard. I just bought a barebones system and installed my two cd-roms, floppy drive, memory, modem and hard drive all from my old system. The new system COMES on but will not boot to windows xp! The hard drive is showing properly in BIOS but all I get when I turn the computer on is a window that ask if I want to boot:
In Safe Mode
Boot To Command Prompt
Boot to Network
Boot to last known good working version
Boot Normally to Window

I have TRIED each of the above and all is does is come bact to that window.
What can I do so that I do not loose all the info I have on the Hard Drive.
The new system is as follows :
Chassis = ATX Linkworld with 430 W PS
Processor = AMD Semperon 64 2800 + Socket 754
Motherboard = Gigabyte GA-K8VM800M
Chipset = VIA K8M800 chipset - VIA VT8327 chipset
Super I/O: ITE IT8705 xchip
INTEGRATED peripherials
Realtek 8100C Ethernet controller - Realtek ALC655 Audio'97 Codec
Memory = DDR400 - 184 pin
BIOS = 2M bit flash ROM, Phoenix BIOS

If Windows was set up with different motherboard hardware you will have problems. Some folks have (sometimes) gotten this working with a repair install, but a clean format and reinstall of Windows would have you merrily on your way.

Solve : IRQ Windows XP?

Answer»

HOW do i have to change the IRQ settings of my PC if " Change Setting " option in "DEVICE Manager" is unaccessable (forbidden) ??
Thank you in advanse !!!!What are you trying to do?I am trying to change the IRQs of the Video Card and the Sound Card because they are in conflict but Windows do not allow me to change them !
Is there any other way to change them ?If these are PCI cards this is HANDLED automatically. If these are both ISA cards (hope not!) then we will have to be creative. What is the computer or motherboard make and model, and what cards are we talking?

You can always disable both in Device Manager and then restart and try to let Windows sort it out.

Was this working previously? What has happened or changed since then?Motherboard : ASROCK K7Upgrade-880 ! Video Card : GForce FX5200 (VGA Slot) SoundCard : (PCI card) CREATIVE but I can not tell in DETAILS !! The strange thing is that this motherboard is equiped with more than 15 IRQs but both devices share IRQ
11 ! What shoul I do ? Is there any other way to change this because Windows XP do not allow me to do it from : Device Manager => Device ( Desplay Adapter) => Resources=> Change Settings ? Will BIOS update solvemyproblem ( this option i will
do only if tehre is no other way !!! ) . Please I am waiting for any suggestion ! Help me ! I have tried to disable them and let Windows sort them but it is doing it the same way (IRQ 11) :-?

P.S. I have not practised my English for very long time and it is MAYBE bad ! If so please tell me i will try to explain better Are they not functioning correctly? They can share an IRQ and still function if PCI. What is happening exactly?

The next thing to do would be to delete the items in Device manager, shutdown and physically remove the sound card.

Then reboot. If all is well, shut down reinsert the sound card and reboot. What happens now?I traied what you told me ! It is working now Thank you very much !!!!!!!!!! The problem was that the computer was freezing if something powerful as game is played !!! but now there is no problem thanks againbut just in case any further problems occur or this way did not worki would like to ask you what would you recommend me ?I am glad you are fully functional!

I don't think this will happen again, but the same procedures should do it. WIth modern hardware that is functioning properly there is never a reason to sort out IRQ's with PCI devices.

Thanks for POSTING back that it was solved.

Solve : PC Won't Boot After Installing New RAM?

Answer»

I tried to INSTALL a new ram in the motherboard. But when I install it, the computer doesn't BOOT up. But then, I tried to test the RAM/Memory Cards and their slots, they all work. But when they are both installed, it doesn't boot up my OS. Do I have to change something in the BIOS? Or is it in the OS? Here are my computer specs:

Pentium 4 2.66GHz

If you need more info, just post it. Thank you.Do you have the specific model of the mother board? When you put in the 512MB RAM the new one by itself does it work?.

When you install them both is the computer screen just blank or do you get an error message?Do you have the specific model of the mother board? It's a VIA P4M800 mainboard for Intel Socket 775 Processor.

When you put in the 512MB RAM the new one by itself does it work? Yes.

When you install them both is the computer screen just blank or do you get an error message? It's either I get a blank screen and hangs the PC or I go to the stop screen then suddenly restarts. It could be a FIC motherboard, it could be an ECS motherboard, etc.Do you know what is the Maximum amount of RAM your computer can take? How many Slots do you have?

Have you tried reseting your computer COMOS? (unplug powercable and remove battery on motherboard for 5 sec)

Solve : Powersupply?

Answer»

Hey around december my powersupply went out. it was a 550watt. The way it happend was first my monater went blank and the vid card wasnt getting any power. But the pc itself would still turn on. Eventually it wouldnt even turn on and i took the powersupply out and looked and it had a BIG explosion in it lol. So I just went out and got a 600watt powersupply hooked everything up and it still will not turn on and ive tried so many THINGS and i get nothing any ideas??? :-/Maybe when it "exploded" something else got burned along with the powersupply? Maybe it's not compatible? Maybe it's because the 'wattage' is 50 more.Thats what i think happend to but im trying to have a positive outlook on things cause im very short on the $$$Have you tried looking at the other components of the computer to check if they look ok?Yea i didnt see any thing that looked abnormal its like nothings getting any power.Did it go out while the computer was on? If so, maybe the power cord (if that's what you CALL it) got affected too? Try using another one maybeYea i tried 2 or 3 of em lolQuote

Hey around december my powersupply went out. it was a 550watt. :-/

Wattage is nothing if it is an el cheapo power supply. You have tried a neww one and it made no difference, so it sounds like other components (like the MB) were taken down as well. Of course we have to assume that everything is connected correctly and the MB is not shorting out on the case somewhere, etc.

Sounds like a new BOARD or a trip to the SHOP are in your future.

That really blows i just got this board in fall and i spend alot on it.What make and model of power supply was it? That can tell you a lot. If it came with a no name case, they are meant to explode!

Solve : Cannot access floppy disk or cd or cdrw drive?

Answer»

Hello out there:

I have a computer with Asus 7v Mother board, Phoenix bios two Maxtor HDD and one floppy and two Lite-on CD drives one a LTN-526s CD-Rom, and the other LTR-1210B CDRW. My OS is Windows 2000 Professional.

During the course of events I accidentally did not activate Zone Alarm while I activated my net connections. I noticed a lot of activity on my modem data lights when I knew there should not have been any action on it, However it took quite some time for this to dawn on my poor overworked brain.

I turned off my modem and immediately shut down my computer, waited about a MINUTE and restarted. After that I noticed little things here and there that I thought were a little funny. However the main thing I noticed is I could not load my Microsoft Train Simulator program any more.
I checked to see if my CD was working for Audio and it was, but when I tried to access it from
My Computer a dialog box popped up with d:\ is not accessible and below that was Incorrect function. I also tried my floppy and my CDRW drive with the same result. I scanned my HDD with an Antivirus program and it found a trojan and a worm which it isolated. Then I backed up my HDD and used Fdisk reformatted and reinstalled a clean copy of Windows 2000.

When I restarted the computer I had the exact same problem with the same drives. Thanks to your SITE I was browsing through this forum and information on one of your posts clicked. I checked the properties of all three drives and the pie diagram shows them to be completely full even though I had nothing in them!!

Does anyone on this forum know how to remedy this? I really would like to play my Train Simulator.

Thanks in advance for any helpare u sure when u backed up ur hdd, the hdd u used as a backup was not infected also?

and also, if u suspect that u have a virus of some sort, it is NEVER a good idea to restart ur computer, because thats when the virus installs itself. u should do a virus scan first before restarting.Homer thanks for the quick reply.

I did not write in my sequence of events that I had used a virus checker and when it found the trojan and the worm it sent them to quarantine.

You are definitely right about not restarting before checking (I understand that both Windows 2000 PRO and XP/pro are replicating OS's that when you restart the virus can attach itself to another file and return back into your computer)

UPDATE:?

Halleujah I think I have found it! I had originally loaded INcd version 3.0 from the Nero DISK and on a hunch I used add/remove programs from the CP and low and behold my Floppy started to read, and when I looked at properties, it had the correct pie diagram and LISTED the correct number of bytes used in the floppy. I went on and checked the properties of the CD-rom and the CDRW and they were correct also. I then used a program CD with autorun and it did that.

Thanks again for your help. Do you think there is any way for me to use INcd without this problem?

Just to see, I reinstalled INcd and the same thing happened.

I never install InCD on any machine, but i don't use CDRW's either, so no need for something like that.

I ama impressed that you sorted this out, though. Good job.kudos

lol i dont even know what incd isInCD is the portion of Nero that allows you to directly write to a CDRW disc and treat it like a big floppy.ic, thanx

Solve : Auto Play Actin' All Funny?

Answer»

Hey, I don't really use my AutoPlay, but it's being all funny, and so now it's irritating me...

It only lists two options when I pop in a CD - both are for a program I hate, to boot.

It used to list a whole bunch - RIO, WMP, Media Monkey, Dell Jukebox, iTunes, etc. etc.

I've gone into TweakUI and everything I want is there... It just doesn't happen when I put the disc in.

Thoughts?

(XP SP2)Have a read:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=autoplay+in+XP&spell=1

<------------Thanks, I had TRIED doing some research before posting, and found many articles similar to those.

I don't want to DISABLE AutoPlay, and I don't want to REMOVE items...

I have handlers that I want to appear on the list.... And I don't want them to be the default, either.

Again, according to TweakUI, all the ones I want are exactly where they should be.

So is there an .INI or something somewhere that's EASY to edit and fix?

Solve : question about upgrading my computer, pls help?

Answer»

Dont know too much about upgrading computers, so I came here

I have this computer
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument?cc=us&docname=c00385631&lc=en&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN

It has integrated graphics

i was wondering if I can upgrade that and the memory, with a PCI graphics card, and 2 sticks of 1 gb memory?

thanks a lot

and if i can use a pci graphics card, how will that WORK? will the integrated graphics just not be used anymore, and the card will take over, or what

thank u very muchWhat are you wanting to do, that you are not able to do now? EXTREME gaming seems the only thing this machine cannot do.

Without an AGP card PORT, you are limited to a PCI card or the onboard video. When this card is added, the onboard video will be disabled, or you may need to turn it off in the BIOS.

It looks like it came with a gig of RAM installed. More will probably not be helpful for usual computer tasks, but you could add more as you mentioned, assuming it is the correct kind.

It's amazing that a high end machine does not have an AGP or PCIe slot. What onboard graphics is in there? You can right click on Display Adapter in Control Panel/System/Device Manager to see. I am not sure a PCI card will out do onboard AGP.slightly better gaming

But i want to be able to run photoshop, illustrator, flash, and dream weaver, 2 maybe evn 3 of those at a time

along with my messengers and firewall, anti virus ect...

right now I get slow down with that. You can't do better than that with all of that hardware? Oh well, that's XP for you. I've got a PIII with 256 RAM that does all of that just fine, except for the extreme gaming and it has a whopping 256 RAM but has Windows 2000.

Again, I don't think ANY PCI card you add will do better than onboard AGP with the same amount of RAM, but I guess you can try.

Solve : External Hard drive.?

Answer»

Recently my computer's internal hard drive BLEW, I took my NEW external (never used YET) and Hooked it up but my computer wont recognize it as the PRIMARY hard drive. I tried totally taking out the useless one and the same thing happens. Is it possible to use the external as the MAIN hard drive? Do I need to buy a new internal? Thanks..Is this a USB drive? Then, I believe the answer depends on whether your BIOS supports booting from USB. Here's a reference that might help: http://www.addonics.com/support/faqs/usb_troubleshooting_resources.asp

Solve : not booting, assistance please?

Answer»

I just got a TOWER from my old bus driver, anyways, when I boot, the only thing I get is a screen stating the BIOS information at the top like it should at start up, and under that it says that it's checking the NV RAM. I let it sit for over an hour, and still nothing...

heres some infomation that might make a make a difference to somene.

I don't know if this is souposed to happen, but when to computer is off, the optical mouse stays lit, and will respod to motion by GETTING brighter.
When I got the tower, it didn't have a power button, so I put anotherone on, don't know how that COULD effect anything though
I put the video card, hard drive, cd drive, dvd drive and ram in my self, and they all work.

Motherboard: ASRock K7vtz
Ram: 2, 128 PC100 sticks
CPU: AMD duron 1300 GHz
HDD: 1, Maxtor 20GB
S3 ViRGE/DX video card
USB 2.0
Samsung DVD rom drive
BenQ 52x24x52 cdrw drive

Ok any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks
Was that tower a working computer when you received it or just the case and power supply? What about the power supply? Have you considered the possibility it might be bad or inadequate for the components you've installed? Can you see some specs stated on the power supply?I would unhook all the drives and cards except video and see if it works. You may need to set the BIOS options to failsafe for now.Well, I got the tower working, the jumpers were set worng on the hard drive, they were set to slave, and it was the only hdd in the tower. but now I am trying to put WIN 98SE on the computer, i have got to the part where I enter my product key, and the computer will go to a black screen saying "windows protection error, you need to restart your computer"uhg, nevermind, I will just put XP on it, my xp DISK is in my locker at school

Thanks for the help

Solve : Problem in putting old PCs together?

Answer»

Hi all,

I've TWO old Computers which I just put together and ... I've some problems:

I have:
2x Mainboards
3x CPUs
different EDO- and SDRAMs
Harddrive, CDRom etc. are no Problem.

Both mainboards are called 82430VX/P54C PCI Mainboard - 5V A0/A2/A5
But they are a bit different.
The one fits to my handbook (V1.0 I think) and has only Single VOLTAGE Setting for CPU. 3.3V or 3.45V-3.6V
The other one fits (as far as I could see) to a pdf-file of a newer version of the handbook of the mainboard (When I googled for the complete mainboardname got it). This is V2.2. It has single and dual voltage setting. Single is the same as the first mainboard. Dual is for 2.5V, 2.7V-2.8V or 2.9V.

And I've three CPUs:
AMD-K6-233ANR - 3.20V Core / 3.3V I/O
Pentium i166
Pentium i100

The Pentium i100 was in the first Mainboard, the Pentium233 was in the secound one.

Moreover I've 1x 64 SDRAM, 1x 32 SDRAM, 2x 32 EDORAM and 1x 16 EDORAM.

OK, as far as good.

I want the one PC for WIN98SE and the other one for Win95.
I THOUGHT about 2x 32 EDORAM, P166 and the MainboardV2.2 for Win98 and 32 SDRAM, P100 and MainboardV1.0 for Win95.
Problem: 32SDRAM were not acceptet (I think because of the P100)

Then I thought about putting the AMD K6 on the Mainboard V2.2 and the P166 on the mainboard V1.0 because I hope the 64 SDRAM will do on the mainboardV2.2 and the 64 EDORAM on the mainboard V1.0.
My problem is, the core voltage of the AMD K6 does not fit to the mainboard. If I set the jumper on 2.9V at the board does the CPU although work?
If not, which other possibility do I have?
How much RAM does Win95 accept? I do not find it in the handbook.

Thanks for help

Solve : USB ports stopped working?

Answer»

W2K Pro w/SP4, P3 dual processors. Wife plugged camera into front USB port, locked up PC, now all devices (scanner and camera) off and no USB front or back.

Checked System Device MGR and USB Root and VIA MB USB drivers - indicated working properly, acted like it wasn't connected so I changed cables. Re set CMOS on MB jumper. Went into safe mode and uninstalled USB Root and VIA USB. On reboot it found hardware and reinstalled, still no USB.

E mailed Tyan MB vendor. I had updated the BIOS which did have a USB slow ISSUE. Considering uninstalling the VIA USB drivers and reloading clean copies, then re flashing the BIOS.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

PaulWhat kind of camera did she plug in? I take it the drivers weren't loaded yet? So now when you say it's dead... Did you test just the scanner in all ports? Does it recognize anything at all? any devices in manager? But it says all is OK?

Camera is a Fuji and drivers were already installed so when you plugged the USB port in and turned the camera on to send it automatically brought up the application.

when I went into control panel, SCANNERS and cameras, neither the scanner nor camera were listed as they had been before.

i checked the front USB ports plug into the MB and it reads like its correct. Trying to reload the scanner, it can't find the device. Thats when I checked the USB devices which say their working fine.Quote

i checked the front USB ports plug into the MB and it reads like its correct

Does this mean the camera is working in the front? Or just that the front ports are recognized in device manager? No, neither front nor back USB ports are working, although the back ports were working fine.

Both the scanner and camera were previously listed in device manager but now are not and I can't get the driver software to find them, nor will Windows on start up. I've tried the VARIOUS plug in routines without any success. Its like they aren't connected. Yet when I check System and the USB ports they all check fine-working properlyHi,
Sadly i had the same problem with my Computer too, Only differance i'm running XP Pro and your running Win2K pro.

Try this and see if this resolves the problem.

Double Click My Computer,
Open Control Pannel,
Double Click System,
Click the Hardware tab
Click Device Manager
when it loads the list of devices then you need to
Press the + next to the one labled Universal Serial Bus Controllers.
for **ALL** of the ones labled Exacually 'USB Root Hub'
Right Click and select Properties,
Click Power Management,
Untick 'Allow the computer turn off this device to save power.'
Click Apply,
Click OK.

Remember repeat this for all USB Root Hub's in the list.
This MANAGED to solve the same problem i had with my USB ports...Hope it helps.

(Sorry for any bad spelling errors, i've posted this message 00:31GMT...thus very tired :-/)

DEVICE MANAGER says that this device is working properly. I have boot and reboot my computer for many times since the HD disappears.

Jerry

Jerry:

Are you saying you see two hard DRIVES listed under Disk Drives in Device Manager, but you see only Disk 0 and not Disk 1 in Disk Management?

What are the NAMES of the two disk drives in Device Manager? Do these match the names in the BIOS?

Is your BIOS set to auto detect?

Did you notice any changes just before the slave drive disappeared from My Computer (for example, did your anti-virus program detect a virus, or did you install a new hardware device or new software)?

Solve : EXTERNAL HD CANNOT ACCESS ... HELP?

Answer»

problem started with problems copying files to ext hd J. than i performed a scandisk routine. it found some bad blocks. AFTERWARDS i still had some problems coping files so i performed a chkdsk /f on it. i heard little ticks coming from the J hd and thinking the routine was over and stuck in a loop i shut the computers power down. i now know the routine can sometimes take over a day. anyway now i cannot acess the hard drive J at all. when BOOTING up the computer always tries to do a scan of J but fails with this message.'' file verification completed. DELETING ORPHAN FILE RECORD SEGMENT 3461. READABLE FILE RECORD SEQMENT 3461 IS NOT WRITABLE.'' i have performed a chkdsk /r and got the same message. the disk manager says the drive is perfoming normally. in explorer you can see the letter J but when clicking on it it dissapears. in properties it shows the disk is empty.
i am using a 250 GIG famtom drive that is almost FULL. i am using an vaio sony system with xp media software.
anybody have any help thanksDownload the free diagnostics available from the manufacturer's web site and find out, but it sounds LIKE it's headed south.

Hey dudes, im a newbie to pc building and have built my new system, lemme tell u the story from the start

Basically i ordered a mobo and i scratched it, i dndt realise that this was a problem so i carried on and when i switched it on it dndt work BUT the power light that was on the mobo was on, i reslised i needed to replace the mobo, i have. But when it was scratched cus i was so confused i kept TRYING to fix it, changing this and changing that, i know im a *censored*, cus i kept switching it on and off repitivly in fustration......now i have my new mobo i have put it all together but i get a burning smell eveytime its on? ive CHECKED all the components and they are fine, no marks or smell, am wondering if wiring is faulty? or is it the psu? has that gone bcus of me? anyhelp whould be majorly appriciated!!!
HashWhat are the specifics of the components - everything, including make/model of PSU?

Are you sure it is assembled correctly? Start with just the MB, CPU/FAN, 1 stick RAM and video card.

Some punctuatin MAKES your posts easier to read too. yeh lol my english is amazingly retarded

anyways

P4 940 3.2 D proccesor
Asus P5WD2 Premium mobo
1 gig of crucial value ram
256mb MSI geforce 6600 Graphics
2 x DVD/RW
1 X Floppy drive
600W PSU (No brand)

yeh basically i dnt think its psu now, i switched it on and smoke seemed to be COMING from bottom of the mobo, the side closest to the floor, where are the LED connectrs are, i was wondering? is there a specific way that the LED,PWRSW and all that connectors need to be in?cus ive matched em up how there meant to be according to the manual but i could turn them 180 degrees and theyd STILL be in the same port....if u get what i mean, any ideas? i think that mobo is faulty ?Smoke coming from the component is never a good sign!

If the connectors are in the right spot, rotation is not an issue. I would think about a replacement motherboard and possibly power supply. Be sure and test it with the board out of the case first with just the CPU/Fan, 1 stock RAM and video card only to see if it works BEFORE putting it in the case and hooking in other components. You have to isolate where the problem is. tried it, still smokey, could it be to some of the wires being faulty? like one of my 4-pin fan connectors as a bit bent? could it be that? its really pissin me off cus ive had these computer components for ages and somthin always goes rong

When I play games, any game, including ones I used to play on my old Windows 3.1 computer, my computer turns itself off after like five minutes.
I have a AMD Athalon XP SP2 2500+ 1.83 GHZ, 513 MB of Ram NVIDIA GeForce 5600

I'm not sure what to do. I think it's my video card, but I'm not sure and I don't know how to CHECK. My computer says that everything is working FINE. Any advice I can get would be wonderful.with a video card like THAAT with games that work on a 3.1, you are fine. more likely power supply or processor.Hmmm ...., Win 3.1 with an AMD Athalon XP SP2 2500+ 1.83 Ghz, 513 MB of Ram NVIDIA GeForce 5600. lol

You have games that require that fairly modern HARDWARE, yet run on Win 3.1? nVidia doesn't even list a Win 3.1 as an OS that works with their drivers.

Solve : Start Problems PC?

Answer»

Confused with this ONE: I'm running a Asus AN8-SLI board, a 3800 64FX cpu, and a single Nividia 6800GT SLI video CARD, 2GB Geil ram, and 2 Seagate Barracuda 120 GB SATA stripe HD's. Every thing has worked fine for about about six months, now starts up, PC goes through post showing no errors and healthy stripe but after post done doesn't boot, just displays greyish screen.
Have tried switching SATA striped HD's, Video cards, as well as Ram, as well trying all in another PC BUILD, even going to the extent of installing an OS on other PC which all worked fine with no problem, even using existing monitor, leaving but CPU/motherboard to consider. Have looked through Bios finding no errors with my limited knowledge, was able to install Windows XP going through whole set-up with it being displayed fully normally with no problems, but then after install is finished it boots to blank display after going through post, have even limited booting to only HD in Bios to funnel it, with no change, as well as trying Safe Mode booting.
Can't figure out how or why it ALLOWS me to go through all the steps of set-up then nothing! screen is just blank!
Would be thankful for any input and help on this one Thanks

What do you mean by "greyish screen"? Is there any text displayed at all?

Try booting to Safe Mode to see if that makes a difference. If it does, it may be a driver problem, a video card problem, or a monitor problem.

To boot to Safe Mode, keep pressing and releasing the F8 KEY about once or twice every second when you start the computer until you see the Windows startup menu, use the down arrow key to hightlight Safe Mode and then press the Enter key.Should relabel that screen from being greyish, to just showing its on :-/ didn't have my first cup of java yet, corrected it, had already tried Safe Mode.
Goes through entire post GUI with no problem, have already tried save mode booting but right after POST is done, all I get is a blank screen no text, display, or error, just blank :-?I have read all the swaps you made & the 1st thing that comes to mind is trying it with a different monitor. (crt) Thanks for suggestion, but while switching monitor wasn't the first thing I tried, did try it with no change, goes through POST showing GUI, even Boot graphic, then nothing, running video card along with sticks of ram from that PC now, in my Lan gaming PC now, with same monitor to post the reply.
Have even tried installing different OS's Windows 2000 and a Linux with no change :-? .
Don't have another 939 pin CPU, as I use mostly 754's because they're a bit faster than 939 pins and into gaming, to try and swap CPU to see if thats the problem.
Can't figure out why while it allows me to go through a GUI interface of the complete set-up fine, even when during set-up its required to re-start, it works great, but when install is done, I get nothing
Much Thanks for your suggestion, would be thankful if you think of my trying anything else, Thanks In the Windows startup menu, try Last Known Good Configuration instead of Safe Mode.

Do you hear any beeps? If so, how many?

Have you tried pressing the key indicated when the computer starts to enter the BIOS setup, choosing the default settings in the BIOS setup, and then saving the settings?

Thanks for your input again, but only thing I can bring up is the GUI of bios start-up, Bios and my SATA stripe info (F10).
I can get into Bios with no problem and have already tried default settings, taking account for SATA stripe, I get nothing when I try to go into safe mode, with no menu just blank screen after Bios is done.
As far as start-up error beeps hear only the first normal single beep.
Have also checked power supply as in past I've tracked some weird problems ito power issues (not with this PC) but everything is right on point, also just for the point in trying hooked up an ATA HD with same end results as the SATA stripe did.
Can't figure out why it would allow me to go through complete set-ups of three different OS's to finish working fine, then after set-up is finished go blank :-?
Thanks again, would welcome any other suggestions or idea's It is just a suggestion and nothing more but it may be the key to your problem ! A friend of mine soon had a problem very similar to your own!!!! When he started the PC => NO PROBLEMS , NO BEEPS or anything to show that there is something wrong !!! BUT
that was all !! The OS did not started !!! Sometimes there was BLACK SCREEN , sometimes text , sometimes it was even traing
to load window XP OS but THAT WAS ALL ! We traied everything just like you , we even disconnected the two banks of RAM to see
if the MB is working properly ( if there is BEEPS indicating that RAM is missing and there were BEEPS ) !!! BUT after all it was
the MB which was defective !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We changed it with a new one and he is FULLY functional again !!!

I DO NOT WANT TO DISAPPOINT YOU but may be it is a new MB that you need !!! I VERY MUCH hope I am wrong and it is something else smaller and cheaper !!!!!

PLEASE EXCUSE MY BAD ENGLISH !!!!!!!!!!!8-) Thank You, for your input on MB found and used my MB PCI card tester early this morning, everything checked out, but as the PCI card tester isn't the highest tech found, there still might be a problem with MB.
Have switched most parts monitor, video card, ram, everything but the processor and MB, as I've run with mainly the 754 pin vs. 939, so this is the only 939 FX64 processor I have.
I wrote to Asus Support and hoping for help from them, if this is a MB problem, I shall post their response if that is if they have an answer in case someone else might have the same problem, would still more than welcome any suggestions or input still on the probem, thanks all.
And by the way gogsi there's nothing wrong with your English Thanks for your time and effort in trying to helpMr. R:

Try disconnecting all hardware but the motherboard, power supply, hard drive, video card, keyboard and mouse. In addition, use the on-board video if your motherboard has one, and remove the video card. Try to get the system down to the bare essentials needed to boot to Windows.

If you are able to boot to Windows after doing this, then one of the other devices may be the cause, or your power supply may not have enough output to supply the needs of all the devices that are connected.

Solve : Hard Drive Rev Up?

Answer»

I have a Compaq Presario 5330US with (2) 256MB Ram cards (max possible is 1.5GB) & a Western Digital 1.6GB hard drive. Everything OK except some gaming slow due to data flow with hard drive. Installed additional 512MB RAM that is supposedly for this specific machine from Kahlon. On power up, BIOS accepted RAM change & as machine booted, hard drive rev'ed up full. XP Task Mgr indicated little use of MEMORY. Tried reboot but hard drive would not slow down and reboot very slow as if data being transferred. Shutdown, removed new 512MB card & restarted. On restart, everything back to "normal". Tried installing new 512MB card again and got same result. Removed new card 2nd time, but since then machine not the same. On boot up, machine will come up well with no loss of performance, but after up, the hard drive will spin up to high RPM's on slightest provocation and stay at high RPM's for extended period with machine performance very sluggish. Eventually, speed will slow down but return to high speed in computer applications that previously did not involve hard drive use (based on sound). Left unattended last night after speed had settled down, I heard the drive speed up for awhile before idling back down.

I will appreciate any help on what has happened and what I can do to GET the machine back to where it was. I have abandoned the idea of RAM increase at this point. Are you serious about using a 1.6 GB hard drive with a gig of RAM?? No wonder it's having trouble... Don't you have a larger hdd? A gig of ram needs a larger page file... which it won't find if you only have a 1.6 gig hard drive.Sorry about that - hard drive is 160 GB. thought so.. I just wanted to clear that up...

Do you have windows managing your page file? Sometimes you have to go in and manually set your page file to a larger size (should be 1.5 X the Memory)

Are you sure it's your drive making the noise? And I'm a bit confused about your troubleshooting... did you say you tried both sets of memory alone? ie.. the new 512 by itself?XP is now set to manage and it is set at 767MB. I have tried VARIOUS manual settings with no success. On my 3rd attempt, I did try the new 512 card by itself and then the original 2x256 cards. In these attempts, HD would rev but not as high as when new and old cards installed together. I am sure that it is the WD hard drive. I have a 2nd 30GB slave HD installed and I have tried disabling it to make sure that it is not the culprit with no success. I have been on the net tonight via Earthlink DSL and while shopping (no downloads), the HD would speed up/slow down. I have run the Western Digital diagnostics on the HD & got an OK report in all respects. I have as much of the processes and start routines in msconfig as I dare shut down to reduce resource drain. As I type this, the HD has settled down again, but it COULD rev up any minute based on the way it has been behaving. All and all, it appears to be somewhat better in that when it revs, seems to rev more like 1/2 speed vs full speed. It's still annoying as it does impact operations and it definitely revs at times where it didn't used to. My wife has confirmed. Thanks for the responses so far. Oops, it's revving up again slightly.

Solve : System post hangs 5/10?

Hi

iv recently built a pc and it wont pass the system p.o.s.t (POWER ON SELF TEST) everytime i turn it on. i would say 5 out of 10 times it works, and boots into windows. but when it doesnt work.. all the fans are running, everything is on but nothing comes up on my monitor and theirs no beap. sometimes i can reset 10+ times and it wont work.

as soon as i clear cmos it works :-? :-? :-?. i get into windows and things are gravy, i can play games, do anything without a prob. but as soon as i restart the system or turn it off and on again... it often goes blank and doesnt boot. cant even get into bios.

I cant think what it can be . I have updated the bios which made it a LITTLE bit better in TERMS of passing the post but still fails alot.

Everything is plugged in properly in the proper sockets. I have Phoenix-Award BIOS which im crap with. I dont undrstand most of it.

This is me setup

Power supply: Enermax Noisetaker 535W EG565AX-VE(W)
Mobo: Asus A8N-SLi SE
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3700+
Ram: Corsair 2GB DDR XMS3200C2PT TwinX (2x1GB) CAS2
GC: XFX GeForce 7600 GT 256MB

Antec SLK3000B Midi TOWER Case
Western Digital Caviar Special Edition 80GB
Arctic Cooling Alpine 64 CPU Cooler

thanx for reading and helping i hope cos this is properly frustrating
is their nobody here who can help meFirst of all i would RESEAT your Graphics card and Ram or if you have 2 sticks of Ram i would take one out to test for faulty Ram. If you have another Graphics card try this aswell. Is your monitor working ok, do you have another machine you can test your monitor on.what do you mean reset graphics card and ram??

I have tried both sticks on their own. monitor is working fineI said" Reseat take them out and pop them back in again. blow out any dust you see.Try the above first. Is your internal speaker working? this would help in determining any beeps, or do you have some other way of diagnostics like led lights. To test if your internal speaker is working remove your Ram and boot your pc, do you hear any beeps? This article may help with your trouble shooting.i took the ram out and turned it on... 1st time it didnt do anything like the how i explained in the 1st post, 2nd time i just beaped.

the ram deffinetly isnt causing it
same with the graphics card and cpu

i think its either the motherboard or powersupply, but which one :@

its just odd that it works if i clear cmos...Well the CMOS is on the motherboard, and if you are limiting it to that or the power supply....:-? :-? whatim pretty sure he meant to say the CMOS is on the motherboard, and if its the motherboard or the power supply causing the issue, its probably the motherboard.

Solve : hard drive problem (i think)?

Answer»

ok, so i had a 120 gig 7200 rpm western digital hard drive, it was working great, then it starts acting wierd. it'd be fine with little FILES (music and whatnot) but when installing games or software it'd say a file was corrupt. so i figured it was getting old and decided to just buy a new hard drive. so i bought 2. a WD 10000 rpm RAPTOR (37 gig) and a seagate 7200 (80 gig) the problems are still occuring. it could be a software problem too, but i dont think so, i'm working off a fresh installation of windows xp i've scan disked and defragged but the problem percists. with the file i'm currently trying to install i GET the error at a differnt part of the installation everytime i reboot. i know the files not corrupt because i've installed it on other computers. any help would me much appreciatedyou might try testing or swapping out the memory... they can cause all KINDS of issues.

what's the program? And what is the exact error message?when installing wow i get an error SAYING the file is corrupt i'll copy and paste the exact error message later right now i have to go to workwhere did you get WoW? Is it the downloadable from the site? Or is this a retail copy? If it's the downloadable... try downloading it again.. but from another site...its a hardware problem, its in the software, whats the name of the program that your trying to install??

Solve : LCD screen not working?

Answer»

My LCD screen keeps fading to white and has to be held in POSITION for a proper picture to be displayed.
Any help?Did you hit it with something? Did you turn it upside down or anything like that?is this an lcd montor or laptop lcd?

It could be a bad CONNECTION on the main video cable. Have you tested it on another computer?Either way, laptop or external flat panel monitor, I'm AFRAID this sounds expensive. A DEFECT in a monitor's ribbon cables is tricky to repair, if that's what it is. And anything else may well write off the monitor. Possibly it's an inverter, which can be replaced, but you may need an expert to TEST if for you.

Solve : HARD DRIVE WIPED - Please Help  :-(?

Answer»

Just found this site. Can someone please help. I'm not that TECHNICALLY adept, when it comes to PC's but manage to get by ok, however, a few months ago everything was working fine with my 'D Drive', I went to bed, then switched on my PC the next day and my entire 80 gig Hard Drive (which was FULL to 76 gig with ALL my music) had disappeared. I am gutted. I tried looking in it, but it says the file system is now RAW (whatever that is) instead of NTFS. I had literally just bought 100 blank disks the day before to transfer everything. I rang a local PC shop and they said they could repair this for me but it would cost about £180, which I can't afford. I'm sickened. Is there ANYTHING at all I can do to rectify this situation? Anyone? PLEASE help.
Thanks: Skinno xxx
P.S: If I win the Lottery, I promise to take whoever can solve this problem on any holiday of their choice- LOL The RAW MESSAGE is not a good one. WHat kind of drive is it? YOu can download free diagnostics from the manufacturer's web site to SEE if it has departed this world. Any warranty left? Many drives have a 3 year warranty and Seagate has a 5 yr. on many of their drives?

A replacement is the next best thing. The music can be reburned, but as you see, hard drives are not the place for backups. They all die sometime. GX1, Thanks for the reply. Not sure about the warranty, it was a gift from a friend. Much of the music can't be replaced, thats why I'm unhappy. A lot of it was music recorded in studio's - band DEMO's and the tracks were the only copies in existence, so they are totally irreplacable I'm afraid If that is the case, you can try a data recovery service, but they are expen$ive! That's your best bet however.
Thanks GX for the replies, appreciated.
Anyone else any ideas also??Do you have a second drive to slave from? If so not only can you try to retrieve the data by slaving it.. but you can also use data recovery tools for much cheaper. I found http://Http://ptdd.com works pretty WELL, but requires another hard drive. what did you do to get that RAW message?Once you start trying to retrieve it or even use it there is a great chance that you will make matters worse. Some like the "put it in the freezer for 30 minutes" idea, but if this data is that important, you need to get professional service or advice. Skinno, if the data is so important to you, you have to go for the pro and pay the price.

As GX1_Man suggested, harddisk is not really a good media to store important data, nor a CD/DVD.
I myself always have three copies of my data - one in my current HDD, one in backup HDD, one on DVD.

Solve : Trying to install a wireless router - plz help?

Answer»

I'm trying to install a Netcomm NB5540 wireless firewall router in conjuction with a Siemens Speedstream 4200 DSL modem and WinXP. My internet connection is fine without the router connected.
I'm having trouble understanding the connection procedure for the router. Point 2 on the list of instructions says "Set the network card of your computer to use DHCP or assign it an IP address in the range of 192.168.1.2~254". I've no idea what that means or how to do it.
Also, point 8 says "If you have a DHCP server already active on your network it is recommended that you disable either the Netcomm Router's built in DHCP or the existing DHCP server. Please note that 'Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing' is a DHCP server". What does that MEAN and what do I have to do? I think I can follow the rest of the instructions. Thanks :-?You can have only one DHCP server in a network. If you are currently using ICS, disable or uninstall it. If you are not using it, no problem. Go into the network CARDS properties and set it to acquire an IP address AUTOMATICALLY. The routers DHCP server will assign an IP to it. All internal addresses will be in the range 192.168.1.2 - 192.168.1.254 and the external address (what is seen on the internet) will be assigned by the ISP.If you (or anyone else who might view this post and need to know) need help figuring out how to change the SETTINGS from DHCP to manual or vice versa on your card, download this SWF tutorial: http://m.domaindlx.com/liberifatali2/IP%20Change.swf (Right Click- Save As )KJD:

DHCP = Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. It's a way of assigning Internet Protocol addresses to computers on a network. Just as no two HOUSES should have the same street address or the mail carrier will not be able to deliver the mail, no two computers on a network should have the same IP address or information will not be delivered to them from the Internet. If you are connecting all computers to the Internet through the wireless router, then make sure they are configured to obtain their IP addresses automatically. They will ask the router what IP address to use and the router will tell them. This way, no two computers will use the same IP address.

Solve : hp officejet d135: error when printing?

Answer»

have had problems intermittentl y with hp officejet d135 printer. sometimes got message about scanner FAILURE. but more recently nothing prints: get message that there is an error printing. i have the CD for the printer. should i uninstall & reinstall printer software? if so, how do i do it? my system is microsoft windows xp & the hardware is compaq ipaq w/ intel pentium III processor. thank you, dedeHave you installed the drivers from the CD?

FlameA full uninstall, reboot and reinstall is a logical place to start. I am assuming it used to work?

Be sure and load the software, reboot and then plug in the printer. If you don't do it the HP way you will have problems with those all in one's. in response to GX man, yep the printer has worked in the past but have had ALOT of messages about scanner failure. can you tell me how to uninstall & reinstall printer? do i start by going to add/remove programs & selecting removal of hp printer? thanks, dedeplease be more specific about error we maybe able to help you more.what does error message say write it down.could be as simple as being not pluged in properly.
sorry if i sound rude.Quote

in response to GX man, yep the printer has worked in the past but have had alot of messages about scanner failure. can you tell me how to uninstall & reinstall printer? do i start by going to add/remove programs & selecting removal of hp printer? thanks, dede

Yes, but remember you must reboot before you try to reinstall. Sometimes printers have hardware problems so no software fix will work, but it is worth a try.in response to jonathan21 & others, printer worked but often got message"scanner failure. turn off computer & then turn back on." sometimes it worked when i turned it off, waited 10 seconds then turned back on, & sometimes it didn;'t. now i can't print anything on hp all in one printer (hp officejet d135). In the printer QUE it shows the status as "error-printing" & a pop up message on screen said "this document failed to print" & told me to click troubleshooter on help menu. i used troubleshooter until i got to point where it wanted me to tell it if printer is postscript or nonpostscript.

i installed ms windows defender (beta 2) recently---coul d that have f ouled up printer?

i am able to make copies on the all in one printer but not print from computer. what next? how would i uninstall & reinstall as suggested above? thanks, dedeYes, do it in Control Panel/Add and Remove Programs. Then Reboot with the printer NOT plugged in to the computer and reinstall the software. Reboot and plug in the printer to complete installation.ok i followed instructions above & w hen i went to print a document it said i had no printer. so i started using "add printer wizard" & it could not detect a plug & play printer so I started to install printer manually & selected port LPT1, the recommended printer port. then i was asked to select manufacturer & mo del of my printer but hp officejet d135 was not listed. there was an option to use my disc but then it listed 9different d drive files like: d:\2000_xp or D:\DRIVERS\WINXP\ or D:\SOFTWARE\WIA_USB... as well as files on the A, C, G & E drives. how can i find which file is on the hp CD i inserted in ORDER to manually install printer? thanksI got hp officejet d135 printer software reinstalled as advised but still get the following message at times when I try to print something from the pc:
"scanner failure. turn off computer & then turn back on."

Also on May 26th when somone tried to send me a FAX the printer flashed scanner failure & I got a print out that stated: "a power failure occurred during the following transactions."

What next? thanks, dede
I think it could just be dead, and at the least above what you can fix. Unfortunately those have become disposable commodities. How old is the unit?don't know age of it. surely there's something that can be fixed on it? could it be the scanner bulb? dedeIf it can't print like a normal printer, I doubt the scanner bult is the issue. Certainly not the only one!

Solve : using an external Windows 95 Drive on XP??

Answer»

I recently put into use, some external harddrive enclosures to recover information off older harddrives I had (1 each from 95, 98 and M.E. operating systems).

Of the 3 harddrives, 2 of which were able to be read and used (98 and M.E.) in my current Windows XP system. The system, as expected, recognized them right away.

However, the 3rd, from the Windows 95 system is not recognized at all by my current system. I TRIED to manually format/add the "new" drive through "my computer", but to no avail. The drive sounds just like the other 2, so I doubt there is a mechanical difficulty. I have had issues trying to use 95 software on the XP system before, so I assume this is an inherent issue with XP where it can't use 95 software.

Can anyone GIVE me some SUGGESTIONS? Is there a way to get the XP system to recognize the 95 drive or maybe a software download somewhere? When you turn on the external enclosure power, do you hear the hard drive startup and run? This would emphatically not be related to Windows 95 specifically. Windows XP can read FAT16 and FAT32 filesystems (Win 3.1, 3.11, 95, 98 & ME) as well as NTFS (NT, 2000, XP). It is more likely to be a problem with the drive/connection (SEE soybean's post above).the drive does start up and run and sounds just like the other 2so, does anyone have any suggestions?

Solve : Harddrive not recognized?

Answer»

Hopefully, someone has a simple answer to my question. I installed a harddrive from another computer into the one I am using as a slave. I am running XP on the computer, and everything is correct as far as I can see, including the JUMPERS set to slave, power and ribbon snugly plugged in, etc. Windows announced that it detected new hardware and it shows in the DEVICE manager, drivers check out, it shows the correct amount of space, :-?the resources tab says no conflict and the system says it is working correctly. However, it does not show on any menus, and therefore I cannot access the info on the drive. Unless I look in device manager, it appears not to be there at all. Can someone shed some light on this, please? Thanks, deborahreeduk :-? [timestamp=1148824909]What is the eccomputer make/model? How is the other drive jumpered? Some are set up as cable select on the ORIGINAL hard drive and so the other drive has to match the format. Is the drive recognized correctly in the BIOS?

The most likely solution is that the disk needs to be partitioned and formatted to be used. Is there ANYTHING on the drive at all? Is it new? Go t o Disk Management Tools and make sure it is partitioned and formatted.

It sounds like formatting it will be the only issue to resolve, but that is the long winded story. Actually, the computer is a viglen with a Pentium III processor. The main drive is designated as master, and therefore the second drive is slave, and the drive in question has been formatted, and functions well in another computer. For some reason, this computer doesn't seem to "see" it, except on the device manager. I have never seen this particukar problem. Usually, it is either recognized or not, full stop. This time, it SEEMS to not recognize it, but if that were so, then I shouldn't be able to find it on the device manager, let alone confirm its drivers etc. HELP!!

Solve : Computer will not turn on?

Answer»

My computer was experiencing some issues over the weekend where it would report an error and either lock up or shut down. I ran a virus scan (norton) but it did not report any errors

I shut the computer down without any issue last night. This morning, it would not turn on.

I have:
UNPLUGGED and plugged back in
verified the power supply is working
tried a new cord
unplugged every connection and plugged back in

I am looking for suggestions as to what I should do next.

The computer is an eMachines basic computer that is 3 years old.

Any help is appreciated. Would love to the the machine running, or at least rescue the data from it.

Thanks,
Slacker

hmmm... sounds like a motherboard issue to me,,, can you try unplugging all the devices installed inside your pc including the processor and then plug all the devices back,, if it doesnt work probable cause would be the motherboard,,What steps did you take to verify the power supply is indeed working?I only know that the power supply at the wall is working. The power supply on the computer may not be - how would I test that?

sThere are multiple ways to test your powersupply. The easiest is as follows:

Plug your computer in and make sure that if the powersupply has a switch on it (usualy next to, under, or above where the power cord PLUGS into) that it is in the On position. Then, make sure that the On/Off switch on the FRONT of the computer is connected correctly. Try turning the system on. If the fan in the power supply isn't spinning, there is a good chance that the power supply is bad. Also, listen for any high pitched humming. If the powersupply is also connected to the motherboard, look for any lights on the BOARD or any of the expansion cards.

Try that and TELL us what happens.

Solve : udate or rebuild computer?

Answer»

my present computer is a self build about 7years old with a soltek mother board and a processor with speed of 800mtz. i have two hard drives with two operating systems and i am debating with myself as to whether or not i should update or build another computer. i would appreciate the views of an EXPERT. THX in anticipation.walter.First, I must say your computer - at LEAST your CPU - is probably not more than about 6 years old since 800MHz processors were not introduced to the market until about 6 years ago.

Give us more info about your other components. Your original post does not say much. We know what brand of motherboard you have, that you have two hard drives, and an 800MHz CPU. So what? We need more details on the current specs (RAM, video, hard drive size and speed, what OS's, etc.).

Also, what to you normally use your computer for? Do you want to use it in new ways that you find your system inadequate for? The main things to consider are what are you not able to do that a new machine would allow you to accomplish and how much are you willing to spend.

You could GET a barebones kit and just add your devices, but you will no doubt have to buy new RAM. You could sell yours on eBay or elsewhere and apply that money to your purchase. You could just keep yours for a spare, as you won't get that much for it, and it at least works.

Updating it does not seem to pose a solution as you will still have an 800 Mhz processor.

As previously mentioned, just ADDRESS these issues and let us know what all is in the machine now. I have a Windows 98 and Windows 2000 box that do just fine with 256 RAM, but I am not a gamer, and I don't do video editing. For normal activities - web surfing, word processing, etc. they are more than adequate. Heck I even have a PII-400 that smokes on 128 RAM!

Let us know. We are keen to help.

re my previous, firstly thx for your help and advice. i have one 40 gig and one 20 gig hard drive, i don't know their respective speeds but they seem fast enough. i have 256 mb of ram and 128mb video card, i have four usb 1 connections, two of which i installed. i have a cd rom and and cd writer. i don't use the computer a lot, i play bridge occasionally on the machine and its copes quite well. i surf the web a bit and use it for word processing. its just seem slow on start up. i am 82 years of age and two or three years ago i attended some courses at the local tech and supposedly qualified as a level two technician and i have been threatening to build another ever since, but never got round to it. i thought my processor might be a bit slow and when i go to buy parts i get talked out of it, people tell me that to install an intel processor needs special equipments since the pins are now on the m/board. i get talked out of the amd one because the heat sink is difficult to install, hence my request for advice. thx again. walter.I think you have enough computing power for the needs you describe. If you try to upgrade one part, others will have to be upgraded as well. Easier to start over, and cheaper too. If you want a project you could build a system, but that's just up to you.

Noisy fans at start up are common.
I think you MAY have led everyone down the wrong path by not mentioning that the noise disappears in this thread.
Carry on troops but I'll be watching. LOL!thanks guys, im sorry i haven't been on recently to give more feedback, but i havent been able to get to a good comp. but i looked into a new monitor and that didnt work, monitor was on, but it was blank. i talked to one of my friends and he said my motherboard seemed to be the problem. i didnt know what that was, so im coming to you guys, what is the motherboard, and how exactly would i know that was the problem.
Thanks
KamikazeThe motherboard is basicaly what everything in your computer connects to. It is home to the CPU, the RAM, the Northbridge and Southbridge chipsets, the PCI (and ISA if your board is old enough), I/O ports, transistors, capasitors, ect.

Here's an image of a Motherboard that uses a socket 478 processor. Yours should look similar.

Before you do something as drastic as REMOVE the motherboard, please anser this: Do you notice these fans getting loud(er) again when loading a large program? If so, that's the clincher. If that's true, your PC is normal. Quote
Ever open the case before? Know which card is your video card? Make sure that it's in its slot nice and tight. Maybe its just loose.
The next thing I'd do is what Flame suggested above.

Solve : microphone port?

Answer»

ok so i built my new pc got a intel motherboard and my case has a mic and a speaker ports in front
connected threw a wire to motherboard.

now the mic in the front does not work at all but the speaker works fine.

now in the back the one connected to the board (onboard sound) works but with a odd diffrent sound in the background everytime i restart my pc it changes.

but all the speaker holes are working great just not the microphone holes (holes as in where u plug your mic into) was just all the sudden one day they just stoped working properly any ideas??

if this isent clear contact me on msn or aim

[emailprotected]
xxcrazydmxdawg

by the way i have a D945GNT intel Classic motherbaord
OK.. so you said the mic's worked before? Have you tested other mic's in the ports? Have you verified that you didn't mute the mic? Have you run the mic test in the sound control panel?

when did it STOP working? Did you change something? load new software... a game? What have you tried?mic works fine i tryed other mics same prolbem

i have 2 ports for mics one in front (intergrated in case) does not work all the sudden at all
on in back (intergraded on mb) works but has a beeping sound and sometimes a diffrent sound in background

mic was working great for a lil while then all the sudden it did this hasent been fixed sins ( about 3 or 4 days)

i did run the test

no mic isent on mute

i did run the test same results

i did try once reinstalling the audio drivers and i restarted and it then worked i think aright but after i restarted again it did same prolbem now re installing drivers does nothing

iv tryed re installing chip set

it might of been new software i just built this pc alot of software and programs to get back again

Sliz:

Did the mics stop working after installing a new hardware device (LIKE a new video card) or adding new software?

Docno i dont think so im geting a loud beeping NOICE when i talk in the background on the back port

the front port doesent work at al and like i said this board isent even a month old brand new out of the box i was very confused by it i tryed deleating any and all programs possible that i dont know exzactly what they do and i still have same prolbem

also it sometimes get better sometimes gets worse ( the beeping sound) but never go's away

im sure if i went and got a sound card this WOULD solve the prolbem but i dont understand why a brand new MB is doing this

oh also i dont know if this will be helpful but my drivers will not open i put my chip set drivers cd into driver try to open it and it says "the application failed to initialize sucessfully - (E0441203)" this prolbem happends the same time my mic issue appeared when itryed to reinstall drivers now i can right click go into threw explore and INSTALL drivers but that still did nothingguess u guys cant figure this one out then

Solve : new aopen lcd monitor problems?

Answer»

Hi I just purchased a new Aopen F2705 lcd monitor, plugged it in and all it shows is "out of range", I check the resolution on the monitor and it only shows 720x400. I tried removing any monitors that were in the device manager and rebooted and still the same thing. I am running windows 98se, a 600 processor, 512 mb ram, and a g force display card. Don't know what I am doing wrong, some help would be appreciated, ThanksWhat was your screen resolution set at? Can you RUN that on the LCD? Is there a driver CD with it? If something simple doesn't fix this, I would send it back pronto! My screen resolution on my computer is set to 800x600, I don't have a 720x400 setting in my display settings, I haven't tried hooking up to another computer yet and I bought it from a good computer shop, not a problem taking it back, but it should work, when I reboot with the new monitor everything is normal, but when windows starts to load the screen goes black and I get the message, out of range. One other thing I changed hard drive 6 months ago and haven't been able to get my mp3 PLAYER connected to my comptuer, for some reason now it asks me for a driver for it and it didn't come with one, but it worked with this computer with my other hard drive.Windows 98 will probably need a driver loaded to access it. Do you have an install CD for the MP3 player?

How about hooking the old monitor in and changing the resolution to 1024 x 768 and shutting down. Put the LCD back on it and reboot. I'll bet you have a picture. They don't like to go less than that! What kind of graphics adapter do you have and meg. of RAM on it?You ROCK, wow, I have a picture and it's very CLEAR, thank you very much and for the mp3 player it didn't come with a cd, it's a kenda, for the ram i think it's 512 and my graphic adaptor is a g force 2 DUAL display, I definately know when it's not working right, lol.Somewhere you will need to get a driver CD for the MP3 player to function normally. You might try googling with the make and model number.

Glad your LCD problem is resolved!

Making it a slave drive is the best option for you. Do you understand how to do that? You will first have to reinstall Windows on the new drive BEFORE you attempt to hook the DAMAGED drive up.Quote

That usually is a S.M.A.R.T. error message and you need to use another hard drive. None of the rest is relevant if the drive is failing. You can download diagnostics from the manufacturer's web site, but it is failing.

Solve : unknown error. Probably RAM.?

Answer»

Hey,
I built a pc a month ago exactly, and for the most part it's been working fine.
Usually when I turn it on I have to HOLD down the power switch to restart it (it RARELY works first time for some reason, it STICKS when loading XP) but apart from that I haven't had any problems; it's all worked perfectly since I put it together.
Last night I shut down my pc after playing games for a few hours but when it turned off it turned itself on again instantly. Being relatively impatient I hit the switch on my PSU to kill it.
That's the only out-of-the-ordinary thing that happened (and even it's happened a couple of times) but now it won't boot.
I keep getting continous, long beeps and nothing at all happens. Apparently this means there's a memory problem but I don't see how that can be the case; the machine has been running fine for a month and I've not done anything. Even so, I've taken both RAM sticks out and swapped them around (a suggestion from friends) and it's still doing it. I've CHECKED for loose cables etc and everything LOOKS good to me. It should also be noted that it's still starting itself. As soon as it gets power from the wall socket it turns on, without me hitting its own power switch.
Any help would be greatly appreciated - Oblivion comes out on Friday

Specs:

AMD Athlon 64 3800+ Socket 939 512KB
MSI K8N NEO 4 PLATINUM S939 nForce4 Ultra ATX A L R
Corsair Memory TWINX2048 - 3200C2PT XMS3200 2x1GB 2x184DIMM CAS2
Try the system with one stick of RAM in only (it's unlikely that they have both failed) and with all unnecessary cards removed (i.e. everything except graphics card). What happens? It works. I don't believe it.
Surely that chip can't be broken already?

Wow, it's even started XP first time. That never happens.
Do you think I should take this chip out and try it with the other one on its own and see what happens?Yes, definitely. Also try turning on ECC checking in your BIOS (if you can find that option).Okay, I replaced the working chip with the other one and it died again.
I guess that chip must be faulty somehow.
I haven't checked out the BIOS yet but I will.
Thanks a lot for the help.A pleasure. Feel free to come back with any other problems.

Solve : Argh! Stoopid hard drive?

When I turn my computer on, having just installed windows afresh onto this hard drive (*), I get this message:

A disk read error occurred
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

And it just STAYS like that, but everytime I restart or turn of the PC and turn it back on later, I get the same message. This HDD has never been used before, although it was bought about a year ago, just left in its original packaging, and has now had Windows XP Home Edition installed onto it (and all my files copied onto it!!!)

What needs to be done?
Cheers

It's likely NTLDR (a file Windows XP uses to boot to Windows) was damaged during the installation. Try reinstalling Windows XP using the Windows XP CD. Did you see this error during the installation of Windows XP, or after you installed it? Were you ever able to successfully boot to Windows on this hard drive?

DocThis error occured after I had installed windows. I had managed to boot up the drive a number of times. I then used it as a slave in my old computer to transfer my files across and then put it back in the new one as a master.

I am currenthold of the windows recovery console cd from anyone i know. The cd I used to load windows from, whenever I boot from that, doesnt seem to give me the option of the recovery console, it just wants to FORMAT teh drive and reinstall. This is not really an option atm seeing as I have just transferred lots of things onto it and dont want to lose them. (And yes I am learning the value of backing up things!)

Cheers for your help, can you recommend anything else or should I try and repair windows first and let you know how that goes?

Solve : DVD-rom not working.?

Answer»

Hey,
I posted on dell COMMUNITY support forum (http://forum.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=dim_cdrom&message.id=120232) but I doubt they'll ever help me. So I was wondering if anyone out here can lend a hand?

My DVD player isn't working. It use to, a long time ago. But it's been a long time since I've tried playing a DVD on my machine so I can't tell you when the problem began.

Anyway, I insert a DVD into the player and it doesn't work. At all. I put it in, the whirling of the reading can be heard, but nothing is displayed in My Computer. I click on the DVD-RW Drive (D: ) and it loads up blank. It reminds me of the time when I foolishly tried running DVDs in my CD-R drive. But this one is definately a DVD player. It's a recently bought Dell Dimension 5150, and it did play a DVD a long time ago.

The specs? It shows up as "HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GWA4164B", a LG brand from my research. I've LOOKED around google all night and I couldn't find any solutions. I've tried messing with the DMA (newb at this, so don't ask me anything here) and it looks something like this afterwards: http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c140/rchan89/blog/2006/may/Help.png
which isn't unlike this guy's problem: http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=164494

I've tried REINSTALLING driver for the DVD-RW, but nothing's worked there.
I've tried playing with the DMA, even downloaded a VBscript to reset it.

I'm stuck, there APPEARS to be no solution out there.
Please HELP!Do U have a SOFTWARE player eg: POWER DVD...to play the dvd...only trying to help...off the wall !!!
Hmm... no.
EDIT: it came with Cineplayer?
I'm pretty certain I could play DVDs in the WMP before.

The thing is that, nothing even shows up when I put a DVD into the drive. Is it a COMMERCIAL DVD IE: Movie or home made..Any DVD. The ones I'm testing with are Commercial of course.

dl65 Ok I have the same problem.. the commercially dvd's might not be supported by the DVD drive.. even though it worked along time ago but still.. sometimes the DVD over time does not support the DVD that you insert into the DVD drive..Yes I did check, didn't help me.

RE: contradiction.
Yeah, sorry, late at night - brain not FUNCTION.
What I meant was that this is a computer that's not yet a year old. I did play a DVD on it about 3 months ago. But that was then. Hence - new computer / played long time ago. It's very strange though. It will read and write all CDs but it doesn't read nor write DVDs.

I don't know if it's hardware or software. But the person @ dell's community forum says that the configuration is correct.
I'm not sure however, because parts of it read "not applicable". ( see this: http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c140/rchan89/blog/2006/may/Help.png )DVD read and writes are much more complex than simple CD's. It could be that the optics are shot for that purpose, especially if nothing else has changed on your system. Is it still under warranty? Probably not, but they are about $40 now.

Solve : 64 bit CPU with 32 bit apps?

Answer»

Windows XP Pro (32 bit) is installed on a 1.8 GHz 64 bit AMD Athlon with 1.5GB of RAM and I'm attepmting to run Lightwave 3D (32 bit edition). There is no video card. The program/draw rate is insufferably slow. I was just wondering if there was the potential for any conflicts to arrise because of a 32 bit OS and application running on a 64 bit processor. Several other 3D modeling applications are used, and those run at a good speed which inclines me to believe that the problem is not solely because of the lack of a video card. Its only Lightwave that chokes. The computer is well mannered in every other way.

Any good suggestions or links about the interaction of 64 bit processors with 32 bit apps? Thanks in advance.

--Oober Noober

P.S. Is there anything special that has to be taken into account when buying a GRAPHICS card for a 64 bit processor? Does it being an AMD add any VARIABLES?

It doesn't matter what processor (32 or 64) that you run with windows 32. you won't get the benefit of having a 64 bit in a 32 bit environment, but it will run just as good as a 32. to take advantage of your 64 bit processor you can get windows 64, but that requires special DRIVERS and such and really is more of a pain than it's worth right now. there really are no special considerations for buying a video card for a 64 bit processor, but as a note, AMD processors generally run games better than intels. as to your programs choking, different programs have different requirements and getting a vid card will probably FIX the solution.

Solve : Please help monitor probs!!?

Answer»

Having major probs was installing a graphics card and accidently shut off monitor plug and play! And i cant get back in to enable it with a black screen it runs windows program then monitor is black how can i turn it back on? :-?Freebird:

How do you know you "shut off monitor plug and play"? Are you able to start the computer with you use the old video card?

DocYes i am certain i shut off the plug and play and the old video card does not work i was able to enable the plug and play, but still cant get a display after windows xp boots LIKE it DOESNT recognize the monitor. I meant to shut off the video card driver but shut off monitor :-/ what a pain thank you so much for your quick response earlierPerhaps the monitor can't cope with the resolution/refresh rate that your graphics card is sending. Have you tried booting in safe mode? You can't "shut off" plug 'n' play to a monitor.
Do you mean that you removed the default plug 'n' play monitor? If so, Windows will simply reinstall it on reboot.
Can you boot to Safe Mode OK?I tried booting it in safe mode no luck. I bought this computer for my wife and it was used .hasbeen working great other than this operator error. It is really weird because it is portioned with windows 98 and windows xp. She was using windows xp and now windows 98 comes up but xp wont, and 98 is LOCKED under previous owners password so cant connect it to internet. I can hear windows xp come up like its working fine but just cant see anything to enable the monitor to work. Maybe if i get a pc to pc CORD and try it off my computer? This is a great forum you all are so helpfull tried contacting the video card people and they are not responding at allOne thing i can suggest, In your BIOS settings change the master boot DEVICE to CD-ROM, Intsert your Windows XP Install CD and boot up. Do a repair installation of windows xp.

Solve : cd Burner only burns sometimes, and never at max s?

Answer»

problem came basically out of nowhere. 1 day everything was fine, and then it started messing up.

I have an ATAPI 52x Cd-RW and it refuses to burn at Max Speed. 48x capable Sony cdrs it only burns at 32x and 40x AT&T cdrs at 24x. basically 16x slower then it should be!?

But thats not even half of my troubles. The Burner doesn't actually burn! it does, sometimes, but not everytime. according to the software the burn is sucessful, but when i try to run the CD (data, audio, doesn't matter) it just freezes or for example if its data with 100 miles, the 1st 25 might work, if i try to access the next 20 it'll freeze, but the last 55 also work. If i ran it from the Burner it works, but not on the regular CD-Rom. its as if the CD wasn't Finalized.

I've tried basically every option in the software, and its still beyond any explanations. sometimes the CD will burn fine, and then next time it wont. i had a 50 pack of Sony cdrs and about 30 of them are in the trash, 10 still in the box. the wierd thing is i managed to sucessfully burn a cd with the "finalize cd" option UN-ticked! but the next ONE messed up again. The software even says the CD is fine when i do the data verification for it, but it is still messed up!

i can't think of any significant changes i've made around the time this problem started happening. I did upgrade the a new Version of Nero, and i did PHYSICALLY unplug the Burner around that time. but it still doesn't make any sense of why i'm having these problems. I tried different software, i tried going back to the old version of Nero, same exact result, 1 cd might burn fine, you think you solved the problem, then the next 3 will all mess up.

i also disconnected it and connected it again a bunch of times to make sure its connected the right way still the same problem.

i think i managed to narrow the problem down and i think it must be the Burner itself because i hooked it up to a different PC (XP on both) and it still wouldn't Burn at Max speed, burned 1 cd and messed up the 2nd one. also tried different software on the 2nd PC as well. This is a ridicolous problem because if something was messed up software, hardware some driver whatever, it just shouldn't work ALL THE TIME then, not work now and not work 10 minutes later. For what you're SPENDING in coasters you could get a new drive. I think you have isolated the problem. (Congratulations on that.) The next STEP would be to replace it. CRW's are like HARD drives - they all die sometime.

Solve : Wacom Graphire 3 Drawing Tablet?

Answer»

My Wacom Graphire 3 6x8 TABLET has been ACTING funny and I don't know why. It is 3 YEARS old and out of warranty. It will select everything- even when I am not selecting anything- and won't unselect until I left-click with the mouse (the regular mouse, not the one that came with the tablet. I never use that), and sometimes it just won't work at all. I've tried adjusting the sensitivity and it didn't help. If I change it to make it less sensitive, then it doesn't work at all. I tried uninstalling the driver and installing a new one, and that didn't help either. I even tried going back to an old driver, and that didn't help either. And finally, I did a virus check, spyware checks, and defragged my hard drive, and also uninstalled and reinstalled Word, which seems to be where it's having the most problems (although every program is affected; I use it with everything, way more than I use the mouse), and nothing has done any good. I looked all over the Wacom website for help and the only thing I found in the FAQS that might be SIMILAR said to contact Wacom about "recalibrating the tablet". However, it only covers the more expensive Intuos tablets, not the Graphire tablets. I'm out of ideas and getting upset. My Wacom tablet is my very favorite piece of hardware; I simply can't get by without it, and it's not like I can afford another one!

I emailed Wacom and have not heard back yet. :-?

Solve : [HELP] Lexar Secure II Jumpdrive [HELP]?

Answer»

I recently purchased a Lexar Secure II Jumpdrive 256. I was initially pleased with the product but have run into some problems with it.

I cannot use it on any of the computers at my school because as soon as I plug it in, a message appears, telling me that I have to be an administrator to access it. I read the FAQ for the product on Lexar's website and found out that I must either be logged in as the admin, or format the jumpdrive (Losing all files on it in the proccess) and then install some sort of driver update or other such program on the computer that I want to access it from.

I also looked around at a few other computer SITES and found out almost for certain that the problem (ANNOYING message about logging in as admin) is coming from the jumpdrive itself and not the computers security features.

My question is: If I delete the Secure II folder from the jumpdrive (Assuming that it is possible) will the annoying messages stop, or can I perhaps edit/omit the part of the programming that generates this nuissance, and if so, how?I would say to experiment. Copy all files including this folder from the jump drive to your hard disk. Delete the security folder from the jump drive, and see if it works. If it doesn't help, just paste it back

FlameI AGREE..I may be noobie, but I own what I think is the 512 verson of what you have got. I don;t USUALLY have trouble with mine and I'm logged in under a limited XP account most of the time. I can delete the secure portion of the jumpdrive and it still works.Hi! I have a Lexar 256 Jump Drive Secure too. I deleted all the secure stuff from the drive (I double-checked and if I need it at a later date I can download it from the Lexar site) and reformatted it. I have not SEEN that message.
