Solve : how to speed the speed of modem?

Answer»

when i LOGIN to internet my modem give only speed of 32kb/sec .so how can can i increase my speed ?Simple answer you dont

So...

Get Broad Bandso what do u do to increase ur speed
The speed shown in your connection dialogue box does not indicate the speed of the connection. When your modem and the modem at the other end first start "talking", one of the first things they do is measure the quality of the line. They then guess at the best speed they can get over that connection. This is the speed that you see REPORTED. The actual speed will vary according to internet traffic, the load on your PC, the fluctuating quality of the line, outside interference, etc.

In practice, very few people on dialup see real-world speeds better than about 38kbps. The theoretical maximum is 56kbps towards your computer (from the internet), but somewhat less than that away from your computer (to the internet). The 38kbps is about the best average speed you will see.

The browsing experience can sometimes be IMPROVED by the use of so-called "download accelerators". These do things like downloading other pages in the background that the program guesses you might like to see next, or increasing compression on images (resulting in loss of quality, normally). They don't acutally increase the speed of the connection though.

As panboy said, if you want a faster service, you NEED DSL.

Solve : Re: power problem need help?

Answer»

Which operating system are you USING? Have you scanned for viruses and Spyware? Perhaps your power supply is on its way out?

FlameThat REALLY is not diagnostic, so try with a KNOWN good 350 or so from another machine and see if that works. UNLESS it is some sort of proprietary PSU. Who is the manufacturer of the computer? And what name is on the side of the PSU?The computer is an EMACHINE but the mb is FIC AM 37 .
I replaced everything else but mb and cpu 2 years ago
and has been working fine since.The ps is bestec and is the origional.Hane a cheap 350 ps in it now and will let it cool down and see what happens
Thanks for help Guys!No luck with the other power supply, it's cheap one but sure it works fine.
The system had same problem.Wonder if battery could be bad and would this cause the problem?

Solve : HP psc 2210 all in one?

Answer»

print when turned on clicks - will not print test page etcKathleen, I need a lot more INFORMATION than this... Is it a new printer? When did this START? Has it ever worked PROPERLY? Is it connected to the computer properly? Are the DRIVERS installed properly? Are they compatible with the computer? Which operating system are you using?

Flameit is not new
this has never happened before
it is plugged in properly
used it yesterday

we did have a power failure yesterday

i have tried resetting printer

nothing worksIs the printer connected to a surge protector? Was the outage due to lightning?

FlameIf a simple unplugging and replugging EVERYTHING does not work, then:

uninstall the software

unplug the printer

restart the computer

reinstall software

reboot computer

plug in printer

HP's all in one's have to be set up this way.

I have had this happen on mine and 2/3 of the time just unplugging EVERYTHING and restarting has helped. THe other times, unfortunately, plan B was required.will try plan b of uninstalling

i have DONE everything else

hope it works

thanksLet us know in any case how it turns out.

Games are the only real reason I've ever upgraded too, but I'm starting to really get into building PC's, so much so I've started a course on Hardware Engineering and am hoping for a career change in the future!
i know which board, case, and chip im goin with, im using the AM2 chip and socket board, seeing *censored* i will be makin 315 us dollars and over 2k us dollars next year. the only other things that that money will be spent on is my dads air horn kit that im gettin for his 1986 oldsmobile custom cruiser wagon for his b-day\christmas present, and about 350 to 400 on a new\used gas moped. heres the set up im building, which, in every aspect, kills this crappy computer i have now:

Solve : Mouse and keyboard not working on NON-USB?

Answer»

Forgot what u CALL the CIRCLE plugin with that one bar, the non-usb one.

I got my new powersupply. I had to take those caps off that make my mouse and keyboard USB plug into the round ones since the round ones at the back of my computer wasnt working. Now my 2 usb slots at the front of comp are taken up. I dont think i missed any plugging spots for the 2 rounds (non USBS forgot name) in the back. Any IDEAS? it was fine before i changed powersupplies, the old powersupply i had was faulty. I checked for all plugins with the new powersupply and i dont think i missed anything.Quote

Solve : need a small wireless network?

Answer»

I WANT to link five computers in a small wireless local net, anybody could recomend the best and cheaper hardware to do it?
what i need? hubs? SWITCH? adapters? insertion points? etc.
all the computers are pentium 4 and windowsXP sp2 is the OS.
thanks :-?1 Wireless Router and 4 wireless PCI cards. I am assuming one will be HARDWIRED with it's own NIC, so you will neeed 1 Cat5E cable of appropriate length.Also try a 2wire modem. It is the best. Linkysis adapters are the best and easiest to install.Keep in mind how FAR these computers will be apart. You will need powerful adapters if they are far away. Keep this in mind if you have a second story house as well.

FlameThanks everyone!
the place its not so big so i think it will be not very difficult.

Solve : problems with dvd-rw not writnig dvdrws?

Answer»

i'm having trouble with a SONY DW-U14A. it also used to not read certain types of dvds and cds, but i got that solved by upgrading the firmware. when i try erasing a dvdrw or writing one, i get a POWER calibration error, and i've tried both cheap and expensive media, no DIFFERENCE. any ideas?It's not still under warranty is it? It sounds like that DRIVE has a LOT of issues. Does it work OK with regular DVD's (not RW's)?Are all the drivers up to date?Windows has it's own drivers. No additional drivers are needed for these devices. You do need software to use the burning capability.

I don't get people always saying "update drivers" for optical DRIVES. :-?

Solve : CD and DVD rom not showing in My Computer?

Answer»

ibm thinkpad, windows XP pro, service pack 2, cd rom and dvd rom not showing in my computer, will show in the DEVICE manager but says, windows has successfully loaded driver for this device but cannot find device. We also RAN pc doctor and both drives passed all tests.

What do i need to do to get these devices to be acknowledged.Delete in device manager and reboot. What happens now?

What happened prior to this? Did it used to work correctly?Deleted in device manager, reinstalled, worked fine before, is daughters computer, she called to tell me it happened and now i'm tryin to get it fixed, not sure what could've happened after we gave it to her last month, any help would be greatly appreciated.A power surge, lightning strike, dropping the computer, overheating, messing around inside the computer case, or installing bad software might be the cause. Please try to get more details as to what happened just prior to the optical drives not found in Device Manager, and then get back to us.

DocMy daughter swears she hasn't dropped the laptop, but she did say a storm had come thru where she lives and she can't remember if the computer was on or not. She also said that she was trying to install some software for a webcam and that is when she noticed the problem. I also asked if she had been using it on carpet or sitting on a TOWEL or something and again she says she's only used it on a table or hard surface.Ebeardmore:

If the laptop was recharging its battery, it may have been DAMAGED by lightning. Otherwise, the new software might be to blame. Have her uninstall the Web cam software and reinstall the DVD-ROM drivers.

DocYou may possibly need to go to a full windows reinstall to correct this problem. That of course would be the last resort. Do you have restoration disks?

Solve : USB graphics device detected but won't function?

Answer»

I've got an ELMO P30 visual presenter.
I run 13 laptops and the device allows you to capture images on its still camera on all but two of them.
On two identical laptops you get messages like "unable to acquire image" depending on what software you're running even though Device MANAGER shows it as being OK.
The device is TWAIN compliant.
How do I START TROUBLESHOOTING this?John:

Try GOING to the Web sites of the laptop and ELMO P30 makers and see if they have any software or driver updates to correct the problem.

DocI already did. And phoned their helplines etc. Does anyone know of any software tools that would allow me to analyse what's going on?Quote

...Does anyone know of any software tools that would allow me to analyse what's going on?

No.

However, if you want to try to nail down the cause, start with determining what is different about the two laptop computers. For example, if the two have the exact same operating system and service packs installed as the other 11 laptop computers and are using the exact same device drivers, then you might RULE out software as the cause and start looking at the hardware.

If the two have the exact same hardware as the other 11 laptop computers, then look at the BIOS version numbers. Perhaps the BIOSes of the other 11 laptop computers were upgraded, but the BIOSes of the two have not been upgraded. In this case, flashing the BIOS of the two laptops with the problem may fix it.

You can also look at the two with the problem and try to determine what they have exactly in common with one another and what they do not have in common. What they have in common is more likely the cause of the problem.

It's like trying to solve a mystery. The thing is, you have a better grasp of the clues to solve the problem then we do. If you have some ideas of what is different about the two laptops with the problem let us know. Perhaps we will be able to solve the mystery together.

Solve : Monitor Disconnection Problem?

Answer»

Hello Everyone!

I wish someone can help through this. My monitor STARTED acting weird on itself, it works and then after an hour or so....it poofss! No signal detected or like it is disconnected FORM the computer. It was like it is not detected. Well, here is the steps I alredy TRIED.....none of them worked.

1. Check monitor connection(the blue thingy with side screws and them AVR power cable)
2. Replace videocard(Nvidia GeForce 4 FX 5500)
3. Check temperature(45 to 50 celcius only, no effect)
4. Loose cables(none)
5. IRQ interruptions(none)
6. Incompatible to Motherboard-Video Card( no, it worked for 1 year)
7. Check video card socket( no obstructions and card properly placed)
8. Check Ram( ok with memtest and replaced also with a new 1 gig ddr)

Note: it will disorient displayed graphics, if restarted it will display No signal detection. It is a CRT monitor, AOC 7VLR model. Sometimes it makes a beep sound
PcMan Is it possible to try your monitor on another computer...then we will know if its the monitor or the computer .
You say you HEAR a beep ...monitors dont beep, computers do though.

let us know

dl65 Also, try another monitor on this computer just to cover all the bases. How old is the monitor?Quote

Solve : Power problem??

Answer»

Changed out power supply on computer because it kept crashing. Was thrilled because it ran for hours on in without shutting down. Turned computer off for the night, when I tried to reboot the next morn I get no display. Changed out monitor, changed out video card, changed back power supply, still no video. The system is booting, receive no beeps on start up. When I plug in the monitor to the video card you can here a connection from the monitor. The power button light on the computer no longer COMES on but does power up the computer when pushed. There are no lights on the keyboard showing it is receiving any power EITHER. Any suggestions?
Thanks!How old is computer/components? Maybe something else is failing?It is about 4 years old. The MOTHERBOARD is about 3 years. I replaced the battery, swapped out hard drives, disconnected cd/dvd, modem card, & usb. I don't have another motherboard to try so I am hoping that is not it. Aside from the motherboard I can't think of what else may effect the display, nor why the power light no longer comes on but still powers up the computer.Well unfortunately all I can think of is to try a new mobo... if you've tried same mobo, new PSU, vid card, monitor and still get nothing, then there isn't really much else to try. so when you push the power on computer, you hear fans TURNING on, but nothing else right? everything "seems" to be pointing towards your motherboard, or atleast that seems like the next PART to try replacing.

Solve : No red pixels are displayed on crt monitor?

Answer»

I just installed a new asus mother BOARD, pentium 4 PRESCOTT core processor, and an ATI radeon 1600 x pro vid card with pci XPRESS. once i boot the computer, my monitor now doesn't display any red pixels on the screen, so resolution is messy. I also tried another geforce pci xpress gfx card and still got the same issue with no red being displayed. If anyone has any clue what might be the cause of this error, your help is greatly appreciated.If this happens with any graphics card you use, then the most likely problem is a faulty connection between the graphics card and the monitor. First inspect the plug(s) for bent pins, a COMMON issue. Ensure that all connections are secure. If you see no improvement, try the monitor on a DIFFERENT computer.and try another monitor on this computer. if the monitor works on another computer, then its your motherboard, if it doesnt, then its the tint chip in the monitorQuote

if the monitor works on another computer, then its your motherboard, if it doesnt, then its the tint chip in the monitor
Er... are you sure? Faulty connections are the most common cause I've seen of this problem, in all but the oldest of monitor setups.

Solve : New 19" LCD problem?

Answer»

I just bought a Princeton VL1919 LCD monitor from costco. I had it 5 minutes and it started blacking out. The screen stays black for about 5 seconds then returns to normal for about 10-20 seconds. This goes on forever until I turn off my comp. I know the monitor isnt defective because it works great when plugged into my girlfriends DELL laptop. I have tried both analogue and digi inputs and both do the same thing. Any ideas?

Specs:
Pentium D 3.00ghz
Abit AW8 mobo
MSI RX1600 PRO 256mb
Aopen AW850D 5.1
ROSEWILL PSU RV450 watt PSUSounds like your graphics card is struggling with this monitor. Have you tried using a different resolution/scree refresh? Are you able to try a different graphics card? Do you have the most current drivers for the graphics card and the most current ".inf" file for the monitor?Yes I have tried every possible resolution and refresh rate. As I said the monitor works great when plugged into my girlfriends laptop, it just doesnt like my PC. I have the stock MSI drivers installed for my graphics card, and have also tried all the most recent ATI catalyst drivers, but nothing works. What is an "inf" file?Have you tried a different graphics card in your PC with this monitor?

The "inf" file is the file that provides information to Windows about the capabilities of the monitor. (In fact, it might not even end in '.inf' - I FORGET the extension.) Strictly speaking, monitors don't require drivers, but some monitor manufacturers will provide a CD, calling it a "driver disk" which just contains the capability information.

I'm probably being unduly pedantic, but they're not drivers.

Anyway, if you've tried all possible refresh rates/resolutions, then the likely culprit is the graphics card, alas.I havent tried a different one, because my old Sapphire is an AGP and my mobo only supports PCI express 16. My MSI video card runs my CRT monitor fine, no problems whatsoever even in very demanding 3d applications and games. Does it just not like LCD monitors in general, or just this particular Princeton monitor?Hmm... let me just consult my crystal ball for that one... nope... it doesn't have a clue either.

Sorry!your problem is SIMPLE:

its your MSI card, ive had nothing BUT TROUBLE out of this MSI board, and the same goes for my brothers, which is of newer technology than this one (his is a 775 socket board of a differant class, mine is a 478), AVOID MSI PEOPLE! MSI is nothing but a headache! it works fine... with some things, with most, it wont work at all... i WOULD advise returing the MSI card if the warrenty is still good and getting another, you wont regret it

Solve : signal not detected?

Answer»

Hi...I am running an emachines desktop with XP sp2 with the radeon allinwonder 9600 with two monitors. I've had this set up for a year. This morning I was surfing the net and I was trying to play music and I wasn't getting any sound. I rebooted the computer and both monitors were blank (it said briefly that signal was not detected). The computer sounded like it booted up fine.

I have no idea how to trouble shoot on that computer with out being able to see anything on the monitors.

I checked all the cords and they seemed plugged in fine.
How can I tell if my video CARD is shot? Could it be anything other than the video card?....thanks in advance for any help.Can you be a little more descriptive? Can you POST? Can you get to the BIOS? How bout USING just one monitor? Is the power led lit on the monitors?Im not sure what POST means. THe led is lit on the monitors in amber (the because there is no signal). I'm not getting a signal to the monitors even if I only plug in one. The monitors are working fine (checked it on the other computer). The computer seems to be booting up, and I'm sure I can get into the bios, but I can't see anything on the monitor, so that doesnt really help.I'm not sure if this is the issue... but sometimes if the refresh rate goes out of sync it will do something similar... Try rebooting and hit the F8 key right after you start it up.. hit it continuously since you can't see what it's doing. What I meant by POST is.. can you see anything at all when you restart the pc? Is there a black screen which shows the memory count or the hard disk detection? Anything? Or does the monitor remain black even at first boot?

Have you shutdown and reseated the video card?btw thanks for the help I APPRECIATE it.

So the monitor remains completely blank at start up....I've tried reseating the video card.....still no GO.....the F8 trick doesn't work.so in playing a bit more, it seems that its not fulling rebooting and the lights that are on the keyboard don;t light up....Does that mean its the motherboard?Have been playing AROUND more and can get a temporary signal to the monitors, and can get into bios, and get the prompt to start in safe mode, but when I enter that the monitors lose the signal and go blank. So I cant start windows. Any suggestions?If you can get the F8 prompts.. it's not safe mode you need.. it's VGA mode. Then when you go into windows.. reset the refresh rate to 60hz and 1024 x 768

Solve : PC Questions (UPGRADING)?

Answer»

Hello All,

Well, I have a few questions. I'm fixing to be doing a big upgrade. I have a hp pavilion a1130e. Now when I bought it I had been out of the computer would for about a year and a half. I had a pretty nice pc it was great but when I ordered my NEW pc I thought I would be getting something that would at least play the games that I still had. Well, I'm not happy with it at all. I got Star WARS battle front 2 for xmas and have yet to be able to play it. So, when I was looking to up grade my video card all the ones out that I had any intrest in was for 400 watt psu or above. So, I did alot of reading and found out that you can't upgrade the psu in a HP and that it would fry the crappy mobo. So, I'm going to LIST what I bought and what I'm going from.

I bought and have sitting in my floor scared to death to do anything with is.
A Evga Nforce4 sli edition mobo socket 939
A Evga 7800GT
A new atx Case and 600w power supply.
A new copy of windows xp pro.
A gig of ram

OK and I have
A Cheap ASUS 939 mobo
A amd 3500+
A gig of ram
the ram is the same model PC 3200 but 2 diffrent brand names
and a 80gig hard drive

What I want to know is how and if I can use the cpu, ram, and hd from my hp.
And how would I go about getting the old windows xp off and putting the new copy on.
Now I have read that you can't use the same copy of windows on a new mobo that it looks at it as a new computer. Thats why I bought another copy

If i have left out some important details let me know and I will post them

ThanksIt looks like you have enough components to build two comuters...

But to build one good one that works.. I would use your new motherboard, your AMD 3500 socket 939, your RAM.. unless you wanted to go with Dual Channel.. in which you'd have to buy new.. And your old hard drive will work fine as long as you wipe it. But you are correct in that if you have XP Home.. you can't use it if you replace more than 3 components at the same time.

Good LUCK.. and have fun with your new PC.

Solve : verifying dmi pool data.........?

Answer»

I just put together a NEW computer, well to say the least I am fairly new to this. any way I tried to install windows xp on my new hard drive, when it got to the screen where it asks you to press f8 to agree my f8 key wasn't working. so the only other thing I could do was to press escape, well now I got a new keyboard and when I turn on the computer to try and load windows again it loads to a screen saying vrifying dmi pool data....... and just stays there. I have no floppy or cd in why now does it not work is there a way to fix this?If you're still in the install phase, why don't you just start over.I tried to just install again, but after I turn it on it goes right to this screen. I also tried disconnecting all the pci cards and just starting it with BASIC hard drive, cd rom, floppy and it changed to say, verifying dmi pool data.........UPDATE succesfull, but still nothing happened. It is a brand new hard drive is there a way of erasing anything that MAY have been loaded on to it :-??Sorry.. I'm a bit confused... when you turn it on.. it should boot to the CD and and begin INSTALLING windows.... From there you can repartition or reformat..

You have a BIOS/hardware problem. Reset the BIOS to it's failsafe defaults and try again.

Solve : cant unlock hard disk?

Answer»

the hard disk of my acer travel mate laptop was lock by by room mate,i cant unlock it,now i cant find him,i cant bring back to the store where i bought it coz its in ANOTHER country. any of you guys help me to unlock my hard drive?What exactly do you mean by locked? Some details would be helpful.i cant access to the disk,THERES a password option for locking the hard disk in bios setup, i dont have the password. i know my frind tricked me.reformating it cant do.so is there any way to unlocked it?If you don't have the password, you cannot unlock it unless you can prove ownership and pay a substantial ammount of money. It's what's known as ATA locked and it's impossible to remove by conventional methods.
Do not try and place another drive in that laptop as that will automatically become locked as well.

As it stands, unless you can contact your room mate, you have a very NICE doorstop.You might try THIS if you haven't found anything else...None of these will work without specialist knowledge and/or equipment.
Before we go any further, what's the SERIAL number of this computer so that it can be checked against the VARIOUS stolen computer databases?

Solve : dvd drive not accessible?

Answer»

What content is on there and was this a copy or a burned DVD of something else?this is from my camcorder a home video that i made. it was not from anywhere else nothing illegalNot implying illegal, just trying to see what the problem could be.

Well I think it has to be in a SPECIAL format to be played on a home DVD player which is what you are using. You may want to check the requirements for that machine like what file types or structures are supported.

The fact that it plays on your machine shows that the BURNER is working though, and that is good news.

What kind of software came with it, or what were you using to burn the DVD with? What is the make and model # of the home unit? Do we know what types of format it supports?nero came with it and i couldnt figure out how to work that..... i burned it with power2go program. it showed a mpeg and the info book on my dvd players says it has to be mpeg2 but i dont know how to CHANGE that. and the other extentions range from wmv to avi to MSWMM to mpg. i have tried everything i could think ofYou'll just need to do some reading to find how to do that. Maybe someone more knowledgable on this aspect will jump in. But here is some reading that may be all you need.

What version Nero? That should be enough:

http://www.videohelp.com/nerodvd.htm

http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/mpg/nero-dvdburn.htm
Like stated above, most home systems don't play MPEG. MPEG2 is a completely different animal... (compression ratio is much higher) not something you can just modify. Try taking the movie file and converting it DVD, VCD or SVCD and then burn it to the DVD. You can find programs to do this at Download.com... Just type in the search window (mpeg to DVD).

If you have Nero SmartStart installed, use that to select the DvD device. If not, there is a setting within Nero that switches between DvD and CD. Where that is depends upon which version that you have.

If you want the simplest DvD burning software on the market, then DvDSanta is made for you. Unfortunately, it's not free at US$29.99.i hope you dont mind me asking a tech question.

my dvdrw/cdrw and my cdrw/dvdrom drives stopped being able to record they get over half way or to 99% then they stop saying that it could not complete the burn. i have reinstalled the drivers, tried cdr's, cdrw's, and dvdr in both drives. none work. i have tried music, and photographs also just some data. all the same. i can still play games and watch movies, just not burn. i have tried drag and drop burning, and nero all with the same results. i dont know what to do.

i am running a gateway 7200x, 3.4gz, 1gig ram, 128 mb ati graphics, xp home w/sp2. has anyone had this problem before or know of a solution. thanks

Solve : PC won't startup?

Answer»

I have a AMD PC 2100 motherboard. Problem is that only the RED and green lights flash. but no power to cd roms or anything ELSE. the cpu fan powers up but THATS it. I am totally stumped because i already. Bought a new mother board, CPU, RAM, Power supply, and it still doesn't WORK. if anyone has any suggestions please feel free to help a brother out.oh yeah i forgot to add that I don't get any beep codes.Set the BIOS to it's defaults by using the clear CMOS jumper. Ensure everything is seated and connected correctly. If it is, strip everything out except:

 • PSU motherboard power connector(s)
 • 1 processor and heatsink assembly (This must be correctly FITTED and heatsink compound correctly applied)
 • 1 known good memory module
 • 1 keyboard
 • 1 graphics card, preferably PCI

You must disconnect both power and data cables to drives etc.Already cleared the BIOS as described before. and I completely stripped it yesterday with everything described but i still have the same prob.Now you need substitute components or specialist equipment. Your best bet is to take the whole thing to a local and trusted computer repair shop.

Solve : Yamaha OPL3-SA card sound won't come out right?

Answer»

Hey, guys, I've got one last question. As of late, all previous problems with my HP Pavilion have been solved (CD tray erratic behavior, Windows freezing when I exit from DOS programs), but I wound up with another problem that resulted in me switching back to the Sound Blaster AudioPCI. I had gotten a Yamaha OPL3-SA sound card, and I got the drivers and it was installed. I ran some tests and I encountered an issue with the sound. Sound came out, but it would not come out in proper stereo. When a stereo test was run from one of my games' setup programs, the sound rapidly switched back and forth betweent the SPEAKERS when both the left and right sound tests were being done. Can anybody help with this issue? I'd like to use that card and not get that problem. I need true stereo to come out of it. Also, I was only able to get up to sound with Sound Blaster Pro emulation. The card appearantly doesn't support Sound Blaster 16 emulation, but I don't know for sure.

This is the configuration file:

DetectionMode=AUTO
AutoPowerSave=OFF
PowerDown=OFF
WSSEN=ON
WSSBase=530
WSSDMA=DUAL
WSSPDrq=0
WSSCDrq=1
WSSIrq=7
SBEN=ON
SBBase=220
SBIrq=5
SBDrq=1
MPU401=ON
MPUBase=330
MPUIrq=5
OPL3=ON
JoyStick=ON
SBMixFM=4
SBMixVoice=4
SBMixMain=4
WSSMixLine=23
WSSMixAUX1=23
WSSMixAUX2=23
WSSMixVoice=47

Can you see any errors in the configuration? This is the configuration from the original install floppy.DarthMaul..... I was just looking for the right driver for that card , but need to know what operating system your using .
There are a number of drivers for that old card on...... http://members.driverguide.com/index.php You will have to create a account ......but its free and then you can hopefully find the correct one .

dl65 Well, first of all, I ALREADY have an account at driverguide.com. I'm running Windows 95. DL, can you find the oldest KNOWN driver for that card for Windows 95? Any help can be appreciated. If you can't find the 1996 or 1997 driver, try looking for the 1999 driver if you can. I may have already found that, but I can't be sure if it'll work. Will it be necessary to update the ini file as well? I already tried the newest driver, and that didn't help me much. I'd like to find a YMF701-S specific driver if I could. That's the card's chip model.DarthMaul...... I think that either the first or second search result is what you are looking for

dl65 For gaming etc purposes, this card supports SoundBlaster Pro emulation. Drivers are STILL widely available for it.Thanks. I downloaded the driver and I will burn it to a CD so that when the Yamaha card is put back in the HP, the driver will then be installed. Thanks. Hopefully this one will work. There's one last question. Is there any way to get Sound Blaster 16 emulation on a Yamaha OPL3-SA?

Solve : BIOS wont go to SETUP?

Answer»

After I replaced the PS, MB and RAM, it booted to BIOS fine, but when it tried to load WinXP from the HD, the splash scrren appears, then it goes to the error screen that allows you to go to Safe Mode, then cycles back to the BIOS screen.

SO, I loaded the eMachines Recovery Disks. That made no difference. (someone told me that once I changed the MB, the Recovery disks are worthless)

Then I tried my WinXP Home upgrade disk. (already licensed to another PC) BINGO! Everything loaded, and best I can see, it all works. My only problem is that I need an XP activation code. Its not worth another $100 to buy a new WinXP. So I'm not sure what I'm going to do.
THoughts?

thanks
JohnW2K is a better & cheaper alternative,... much cheaper. Quote

Reinstalled the HD in my dead system, Used the eMachines Restore CD to reinstall WinXP.......

Of course it made no difference. The restore CD is for the original motherboard and as such, it's bin fodder!
You need a full OS installation CD.
No... Windows 2000 is not better... not by a long shot. XP Home edition cannot be used on two separate PC's and once licensed for one .. you'd have to call Microsoft to get a new key in order to even upgrade the hardware with more than 3 COMPONENTS. I suggest you look back to see why one xp disc worked and the other didn't... Maybe SOMETHING changed now and you can try the old one again.IT... Sorry for the confusion... What I meant originally is that after fixing the hardware problems, when I booted, XP would start to RUN off the HD, the Windows splash would appear briefly, then it would cycle back to the BIOS screen. I ASSUME this was all because the MB had changed, and the XP load on the HD was all for the original MB.

Reinstalling XP from the original eMachines Recovery disks did not work because I had changed the MB.

As soon as I did a clean install from my WinXP Home upgrade CD, everything worked. (I assume the upgrade worked because it found legacy Windows files on the HD.)

So, now my big dilema is whether its worth another $100 to buy a fresh copy of XP to install!
Ah.. I C. You might spend the money and get a copy of the new windows then... Windows Vista.Quote
Ah.. I C. You might spend the money and get a copy of the new windows then... Windows Vista.

Vista is not even available for 9 more months. No solution there.

I would also be interested in your research as to how XP is superior to Win2000?Even if it was available now, I don't think I'd BOTHER for a while. In fact, from what I've seen of Vista, I don't think I'll be bothering at all.

Solve : Soundcard not recognized?

Answer»

Trevor_C.... Could you please open up the device manger ...... hardware tab ........ and go down to the Sound , Video and game controller ........ expand that section and take a screen shot of it and post it here to look at .

dl65 POSSIBLE resource CONFLICT with the modem. If it is a modem expansion card, try removing it, turning on the computer, and reinstalling the LATEST AUDIO drivers for the on-board sound chip from the Web site of the motherboard manufacturer.

If the sound works fine, try turning off the computer and adding the modem expansion card. If the sound problem returns, a resource conflict is the cause. When plug and play doesn't work, the only thing you can do is manually CHANGE the IRQs and other resources in Device Manager to resolve the conflict. An easier solution might be to install an inexpensive sound card.

They are cheap and all 478 models are interchangeable with all 478 CPU's. Solve : computer upgrade.?

Answer»

i currently have a dual BOOT system on my machine with two hard drives, windows 98 se on one and windows xp pro on the other. the machine is seven years old and slow.. i am considering uninstalling the xp version and reformatting that drive and then removing the current motherboard and processor and replacing both with something more modern and faster. i appreciate that will require modern memory and probably a new power supply. I have a graphics card in the machine,can i install this on e new mainboard and will the new machine boot from the existing 98 drive. also can anyone advise me on likely snags. i intend to install a new copy of xp on the second drive when the machine runs. THX in anticipation. walter.What type of graphics card? AGP? PCI? If AGP, will the new motherboad have an AGP slot? If not, then you won't be able to use your old AGP card.

As far as booting up from your existing Win 98SE hard drive, with a new motherboard, it might work, but you should expect a turbulent ride. The new motherboard will require different DRIVERS for audio, VGA, LAN, USB, etc., etc., that are not installed on your old drive, and the old drive will have drivers for the old motherboard. So, if you try this, you should expect to see Win 98SE repeatedly going through the Found New Hardware wizard until you get all the appropriate drivers installed. You may able to work through it and get Win 98SE to the point of being reasonably contented. So, try it if you want to, but be prepared to encounter some road bumps, and perhaps having to decide it's not going to work.

Actually, with the upgrades you have planned, you're going to be close to having a whole new system. Have you thought about buying another case and just assembling another computer, and maybe keeping the old one with Win98SE on it? You can network them; would be chance to LEARN some networking.hey actually be rly careful with the win98 thing. i did it and all of a sudden my cd rom drive dissapeared, and a bunch of drivers had fallen to pieces. other problems with differnt kkinds of drive will occur. To my xprience, ovrall, win98 will react badly to new hardware and you will have a lot of trouble with various things.
so i reccomend putting win xp on if you get a faster computer going. other than that, try linux.As mentioned a lot of newer hardware just doesn't have drivers for Windows 98 anymore. 98SE is great for OLDER hardware, but when you upgrade that, you may need to upgrade the operating system as well. Keep in mind that MS is stopping active support for 98 next month. thx everyone who replied to my query about upgrading my computer. I will take note of everything said and will install xp home and uninstall 98 se,. walter.

Solve : Problem wth new monitor (Tyris T901DB).?

Answer»

I just replaced my 15" Compaq CRT monitor with a Tyris 19" flat screen. I think the problem I'm having is with the screen resolution. Images on screen are not very clear, especially text. The monitor instructions says the resolution should be set to 1280 x 1024 @ 75Hz. When I set it for that, all screen icons and other images become very, very small. I've tried other settings, but nothing seems to work
correctly. Right now, I have the resolution set to 800 x 600. This is setting I used for my old 15" monitor. This setting looks better than any of the others I've tried. However, images and text are still not sharp.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

-jimbob.I have never heard of that make before, but LCD's require 1024x768 as a minimum viewable resolution. Does this LCD have drivers from the manufacturer? Did you check the website for known issues and SUGGESTIONS? Do they have an 800 number?No, I did not think of looking for info on their website. I purchased the monitor on-line from newegg.com. I will try looking up the manufacturer's website to see if I can find any info there.

Thank you, GX1_Man.Let us know what you find out. In case you've not found it, >here< is the manufacturer's web site, which includes a support section. I SUSPECT in this case however, the problem lies with your graphics card's settings. What is your graphics card? Does it have features enabling the view to be compressed? It already looks like it can expand a view - hence why your 800x600 is full screen. LCD screens should generally be RUN at their native resolutions, since they do not have the same physical flexibility with PIXELS that a CRT monitor has.

Solve : Wanting to Upgrade CPU in Toughbook CF-27 Laptop?

Answer» HI,

Let me say first that I know little about computers, which will probably become obvious as I ask my questions. I have someone who can help me with the installation of computer components, but he is not easy to pin down with straight and simple answers to specific questions.

Here's what I have:

A Panasonic Toughbook model CF-27, model # CF-27EB6GCAM. It has a Pentium II 300 Mhz CPU, 256 Megs RAM, and a 6 Gb HD, running XP. It is ancient by computer standards, but I recently bought it, thinking it was all I needed in my portable computer. However, I am an amateur astronomer, and I just bought a digital astrocamera which claims to need a minimum of 330 Mhz processing. I've been assured that it will work with what I have, but might be "sluggish". Well, for what I WANT to do with it, I don't want it to be sluggish.

Can anyone tell me specific information about possible upgrades for this particular machine's CPU? I believe that the Pentium II went as high as 450 Mhz, which would be fine. But here's where my ignorance comes in: Do I need to get a CPU in some kind of form specific for this particular model of laptop? Are there different physical sizes and/or shapes to consider? And, if so, does anyone know exactly what I should look for (or someone to contact for the information)? Could there even be different configurations of the CF-27, with different physical size requirements for the CPU?

I'm pretty eBay savvy (it's where I got the laptop, for $100), and there are 450 Mhz Pentium II's going for LESS than $20, pulled from old computers and guaranteed to be working. Does anyone know of a reason why these should be avoided?

Finally, would it possible to upgrade another level, say to a Pentium III? I know that physical space is an issue with laptops, and I just don't know what components are of standard size and shape; in other words, what's interchangeable with what.

I know this is a lot of questions, but I'd be grateful for answers to any of them, even if the answer is "there's no way to answer without seeing the guts of the machine." If more infornmation is needed before a definite answer can be given, I'd be glad to provide it, if told what it is and where to look for it (like looking at and measuring the actual CPU in the machine.)

Thanks in advance!I very much doubt that it is easily upgradeable if it's upgradeable at all. Before you even think about it, have you ever taken a laptop APART?You would have to check on the Toughbook web site to see what the processor can be upgraded to, if anything. Generally laptops cannot at all, and repairs on the inside should not be undertaken lightly.

Solve : Computer will not boot and shuts down.?

Answer»

Hi, my name is Bob.. I could seriously use a little help.. I am an American that LIVES in China.. I had a nice motherboard I had saved away in the States.. I had it shipped to me with a bunch of memory.. anyway I went here in China and bought a box, Cd rom, harddrive, monitor, etc. to get it going.. I am tired of using my laptop.. Smile..

motherboard is about 3 years old... never used and bought from a reputable dealer.. CPU is an Athlon 850 B3, nothing fast by today's standards, but it is perfect for what I use it for... CPU bought used, but from a reputable dealer..

MY PROBLEM is this.. the computer tries to POST but will not boot.. Phoenix Bios.. I get 1 long beep, sometimes 1 long and 1 short and the computer shuts down.. nothing.. before I walk about 2 miles to the computer store to trade the harddrive I bought.. I have ONE question? If the battery is dead, would that cause it to not boot?? I have no way of testing the battery but it is probably 3 years old and has been sitting in the motherboard all that time.. Or do you think I got a bad harddrive.. Quantum 20 Gig.. I have had really good luck with these.. Or do you think motherboard or bios is the problem.. Or memory, but I have tried 7 different DIMMs.. always the same..
computer fires up, the fans all start.. boom about 5 seconds later (pretty quick) I get 1 long beep and the computer shuts down..

Any thoughts or suggestions would be really appreciated..

Cheers,
Bob Beep can Mean a lot of Things , i would check the pheonix web site and look up the beep codes , but i think when it beeps and then shuts down it might mean RAM is bad , if you CPU is bad it will mostly do nothing , and if you HDD is bad it will mostly just give you and on screen msg saying insert boot disk.

ram would be my bet,

or perhaps bios chip, the beep codes are similar for them bouth, but are far as i know bios and ram codes keep beeping till you pull the plugG day mate Im a newbee at this but do U power down as soon as U get codes ....wait a little longer to see what happens...(not too long though)..say 1-3 minutes....have U reseated everything inside ..and do U see Anything ON MONITOR ??...CHEERSoh and the battery wont ever stop you computer from booting , it just powers a clock, the clock is used by a lot of programs , for alot of reasons , but wont stop a boot up
Thank you for the excellent reply. It is POSSIBLE the RAM I am using is bad.. I will try some new RAM in it and let you know..

All the Phoenix codes that I can find reference on DO NOT list a LONG beep and then immediate shutdown.. it acts like it is not even going into the POST routine.. it runs for about 5 seconds, beeps, and shuts down (by itself).. it seems to me that normally a computer will STAY on until you power down.. this computer powers down by itself..

Thanks again for your time,
BobIs the electricity supply correct, who knows what China runs on, probably rice power.

Solve : computer starts up and then shuts right back down?

Answer»

:-/ I have a problem with a computer that STARTS up then shuts right back down.Then in order to do that again,I have to unplug it.Anyone have any ideas?I have an idea that we need a lot more information about the machine and components, what happened prior to this, etc., to tackle the problem. the power got SHUT off in the whole town.Thats when it started doing itWell we still know ABSOLUTELY nothing about the machine, so I would say test with another power supply until you can POST some specifics.Comp has has a model ATX-400 Pentium power supply from WTI.Anything else I would need to get on the computer to find out cause it was a comp built for a rental type place.No name brand.Damaged power supply or damaged components from the surge. Start with a PSU and go from there.

Solve : Probs with new x1900xt - new PSU needed??

Answer»

Hi guys, I recently got a Club 3d X1900XT Radeon CARD - what a beast! Unfortunately it's ripping my PC to bits, my PC just resets about 30 secs into any game I try. Now I made PCIe the primary adaptor in BIOS, also disabled AGP fastwrite. I read also in the ATI manual I shouldn't have anything else attached to the power line going to the card, but I have to, I dont have enough plugs. It's only the DVD drive and the temperature LEDs though, and most of my games are NO CD cracked anyway, so not sure bout this.

Now I went on my mobo's website, and my card wasn't in the compatible list, it only went up to x1600's, but a mate of mine said it's defo a PSU thing. As you can tell I'm a beginner with this stuff, so any help you guys can give me would be much appreciated.

Info from the side of my current Colors IT 550w PSU;

AC Input 230VAC 10A 50-60Hz

+3.3v +5v +12v -5v -12v +5VSB
28a 35a 30a 0.5a 0.8a 2.5a

Rest of my PC is

INTEL 3.2ghz with HT enabled
ASRock P4Dual-880 Pro (socket 478)
2x512mb Kingston DDR PC3200(400mhz)
Maxtor 200gb
Sony DVDRW

Card is fine in Device Manager, temperatures looked fine too, it's onlt unstable en I start a game. I tried Pro Evo 5, Gun, FEAR, and BF2 to be sure.

If it is the PSU can anyone recommend a REALLY good ONE? I'd want it for AMD FX chip though and SATA2 ready because I'm planning a new Crossfire build so dont want to buy a great Intel PSU for just a month or two, I'll just tighten the belt and bring forward the build date.

Thanks in ADVANCE guys, sorry to waffle on a bit! If I can give you any more info just lemme know.I'm not sure the PSU is the only propblem, but it is a good place to start.

Think www.newegg.com and Antec for a pleasant experience from a quality maker.Thanks - I've lent a quality PSU with two 12v rails to try, I've been advised this could help. I'll let you know how it goes!Just to let you know, my mates psu with 2 12v rails has solved the problem, its running fully stable again. I finally saw what Ive been waiting for - Oblivion detecting my system and setting everything to Ultra High! Runs smooth and looks AMAZING!!

Right then, off to look at an Antec like you recommended GX1_Man - thanks again for the input, until my next PC stumbling block!

Good for you. Unfortunately too many people try to cut corners on one of the more important aspects of their dream systems. Let us know how it goes.

Solve : Monitor or Video Card dying??

Answer»

I'm running a 3 year-old Dell Dimension 2350 with a FLAT panel display. I haven't changed any of the hardware on it, and I (attempt to) take care of it. I don't use screen savers when I let it idle, instead I use the 'turn off monitor' option at 5 MINUTES. Lately, however, my monitor (or someone suggested maybe my video card?) has been on the fritz. Randomly, even when it's just sitting, the monitor goes to a completely white, blank screen. Sometimes, I can fix it by turning off the monitor for a few seconds. Other times, it takes 20-30 minutes to come BACK up. It also flashes white periodically when I move the mouse. Would you say this is the monitor dying, or is it the video card? I'd like to know which I need to replace. If it is the video card, do you have any recommendations as to which I should PURCHASE?I would say to try the monitor on another computer to help narrow it down. Also scan for viruses and Spyware... Which operating system are you using? Have you made any chnages to your system just before this started?

FlameIf it's an LCD display, it's probably the inverter or the BACKLIGHT itself failing.

Solve : Card posts, but nothing else?

Answer»

I have a Gainward FX5600 in my computer and it has recently started doing something weird. Right after pressing the POWER button the screen shows the card version number and all of that STUFF that it shows in the top left corner, but right after that the screen goes black. The monitor still RECOGNIZES that it is hooked up and does not hybernate, but there is no image on the screen. No matter what the computer the card is placed in, it still does the same thing.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

(in SUMMARY....it shows the video bios post and then goes black. No mobo post)Similac:

First, determine if the video card is the cause of the problem: Remove it, install the old video card and connect the monitor to it, or connect the monitor to the on-board video controller. If you are able to successfully start the computer, then the card is the source of the problem.

If the card is the source of the problem, you can:

* Start Windows in Safe Mode and attempt to install the drivers for the video card

* Check DEVICE Manager in Safe Mode for a resource conflict with the video card, or

* Remove all other expansion cards but the video card to see if one is creating a resource conflict with the video card, or

* Enable the video card in the BIOS setup, or

* Set some jumper on the motherboard (if it is an older motherboard), or

* Come to the conclusion that the video card is just not compatible with the motherboard and use a different one

Let us know if you need help with any of these suggestions.

Solve : Ghost up via USB.?

Answer»

We make ghost images of the machines we migrate each day. We PREFER to go via USB DRIVES... because USB 2.0 > NETWORK. Usually. At any rate, we have times where the computer, for whatever reason will go anywhere from 30-120MB/minute instead of the 400MB+/min we're used to.

It COULD be USB 1.1 vs 2.0, BUT we run into this issue on all sorts of laptops and DESKTOPS. All compaq and HP, We start with the 610 series laptops and have the HP 6000s, and we have a wide variety of desktops that also have that issue. Did Compaq/HP release different versions of the same computers that vary on the USB?

Or, is there something we might be doing wrong for the ghost up.Radek:

Sounds like a network congestion problem. Try performing the backup operation in the evening when no other user is logged on to the network, or use better network protocols and hardware.

What network protocols are installed on each computer? Is this a client-server LAN or WAN, or is it a peer-to-peer LAN? Are you USING a hub to connect the nodes within the LAN or WAN? If so, try using a router, instead.

Best regards,
DocRemember that USB tries to be "all things to all MEN" and as such, is only moderately succesful at anything intensive that it's used for.

USB is very processor dependent which is where it falls down. It has to wait it's turn on the bus. Whilst it may be OK for transferring occasional smallish bursts of data, it's not really designed to handle continuous streams.

Solve : Speaker problem help!?

Answer»

My sound is echoing and I have no idea whats wrong. It is all the sound that comes out of my speakers from music to the desktop beeps. I tried looking to see if I had any sound effects on and I dont. It wasnt like this yesterday and I have no idea what the problem COULD be. Its not saying theres a problem with anything in device manager so Im stumped. I read somewhere online that it could have been because AOL internet optimize 9.0 was installed. Not sure when it was installed but I have uninstalled it and any files to do with AOL and still the sound echos. Anyone know what the problem could be?If you're absolutely certain that no effects are in place anywhere, UNINSTALL any soundcard drivers/utilities, open Device Manager delete the soundcard and any ASSOCIATED devices and reboot. Windows will now reinstall the soundcard but you may have to reinstall any AUXILLIARY programs/utilities.Thanks a lot! I tried it and my sound doesnt echo now Im so happy! Thank you so much!

Solve : USB Port not working properly?

Answer»

I have a CASE that had an i/o port module included http://silverstonetek.com/products-fp31.htm. The module has 4 USB ports. 2 of the USB cables I plugged into my motherboard header. The other 2 cables are plugged into the internal ports of my USB PCI card via an adaptor cable. The 2 ports plugged into the PCI card don't work properly. I plug in a memory stick, Windows XP Pro recognizes the memory stick, the computer runs really slow, then nothing. The ports work fine when plugged into the motherboard header. Why won't the USB ports work when plugged into the PCI card?
what cables are you plugging in via the adapter? And what type of adapter are you using?The adapter cable (USB 2.0 Motherboard Header Device to A Type USB Port Adapter/Cable - M/M) is at http://www.xpcgear.com/pinhead2usb.html. The cable has no electronics.

Are you sure those are all USB ports? The description says you bought the FP31 (two USB and a Firewire)?Sorry, posted the wrong link, http://silverstonetek.com/products-fp32.htm is the correct one. It has 4 usb ports.Timrod:

Did you check Device Manager to see if any PROBLEMS are reported for the USB expansion card?

Did you check the manufacturer's Web site for any recent Windows XP device drivers for the card?

DocBeware, USB header pinouts can and do vary. There seems to be little in the way of a standard.
Check that card pinout is compatible with the cable you have.DOC: There were no problems in the Windows device driver. No drivers were at the manufacturers website. I emailed them to see if there were any available.

Backdated: I checked each of the 5 pins on the cable and they match the i/o module pinout which also matches the mobo header. Pin1: usb power, pin2: usbp-, pin3: usbp+, pin4: gnd, pin5: nc.

When I insert a memory stick it will work, I can see and browse the files, but then the system runs really slow, then almost locks up the computer until I remove the memory stick.

Do you think the I/O module has electronics in it for the USB portition or is it basically a cable?

The internal usb ports on the pci card still worked as I just checked them with a memory stick.

I was playing with it again and received a new error stating windows doesn't recognize the device and drivers aren't loaded. I double click on the device and it says the drivers aren't loaded. This is weird because no drivers were ever loaded for this besides what came with Windows XP Pro and this is the first time I've seen this particular error. It's also wierd because I just used this port and it was fine. I reset the cable and it works-kind of.

Could the resistance in the cables be too high between the I/O module, the adapter cable, the pci card, and the usb device? If that's not it, it's got to be something weird with I/O module.
Quote

Could the resistance in the cables be too high between the I/O module, the adapter cable, the pci card, and the usb device? If that's not it, it's got to be something weird with I/O module.

And therein lies a major problem with USB. A half inch extra length of cable can make all the difference. You could try re-routing the cable away from any electrically NOISY devices.
Quote
...The other 2 cables are plugged into the internal ports of my USB PCI card via an adaptor cable. The 2 ports plugged into the PCI card don't work properly. ...

What adapter cable are you using--a USB to serial adapter or a USB to Firewire adapter or something else?

Doc
Another thought is PSU output CAPACITY. USB devices can draw up to 0.5A each. Quite a few poorly designed devices (Modems in paricular) attempt to draw more than this but this usually results in the internal crowbar triggering.Doc: the adapter cable is usb to usb, http://www.xpcgear.com/pinhead2usb.html.

Backdated: I have a 400w PSU. I ran the following link to calculate my power usage and it only totaled around 250W http://www.jscustompcs.com/power_supply/.

Updating the drivers didn't help.

Solve : Computer Trouble?

Answer»

For about two months, my computer started making loud beeping/screaching noises whenever I try to run multiple programs at once. The programs also begin to slow down and freeze. I think the noises are coming from the hard drive but not 100% percent sure. Can someone help me identify from where this problem is coming from and how I can fix it.

Thanks,

Gleb
We will need more information. When did this start? Have you made any changes to your system recently? Which operating system are you using?

FlameWell we can't see or hear it so how about opening the case for a closer listen? If necessary unplug the hard drive and see if it stops. It could be a heat SENSOR warning also. More information from you is needed.im PRETTY dam sure its ur harddrive...ive been there.

but just to make sure u might wanna do what has been suggested.I did not make any changes to my computer since I bought it at the STORE. In the beginning, the computer did not make any noises, but started about two months ago.

I did open the computer before and I think it was coming from the hard drive. The thing that is puzzling to me is that the computer starts to freeze up after I start running a few programs like Mircosoft Excel and ITunes. I don't know that much about computers, but I always though that RAM and not the Hard Drive is involved after programs are open.glebgorkhover........Quote

but I always though that RAM and not the Hard Drive is involved after programs are open.
The hard drive is involved with pretty much everything you do on the computer . The entire operating system is on the hard drive ....... If I were you I'd be saving anything you dont wish to loose and rush out and buy a new hard drive ....it sounds very much like that one is about ready to go .

dl65 Your HDD could very Well be Dieing ,

But i could also be that you have som much crap runnig on your Computer that you dont have enuph ram to hold it all and its spilling over into VM on the HDD , and its making it work way to hard and hence nosiey this thye of thing will kill your HDD if it hasent already.

So you need to GIVE the nice PEOPLE here a better look at your pc

a "Hijack this" log would be nice

The time i spent to get this deal = Priceless

So i ordered this on Monday May 29,2006 and the estimate delivery date is set to June 9,2006. Now i would appreciate any comments and suggestions regarding this. Also i would like to know is that is the estimate date by any chance accurate ? Or do they always delay it ? Thx in advanceSounds like a great machine at a good price. Usually they are pretty close on the shipping estimates.

As a rule I never get an extended warranty, but in the case of a $1300+ LAPTOP I would consider it.I would say that looks like a sweet deal you're gettin' there buddy.Heehee yea makes me feel even better after reading your feedback. Oh btw the whole price is Canadian Dollars cana... canadi.. CANADIAN DOLLARS? i am an aussie and STILL i know what this means. that is an incredible deal. normally i wouldn't go for a dell, because the lower end ones are usually badly put together, but this soulds great!Thx for the replies guys n gals. I am quite disappointed in Dell atm as i have been checking the status for my order online since i ordered it. I didn't see any info regarding my order online for the first two days, but after speaking to a rep. about it, she got it going. So i checked my status everyday for uptil Friday and the order went into production that day and everything was going smooth, until i checked my order status on Saturday it gave me this message

"Delivery date of your product might have been changed.
This could have been prompted by the following circumstances:

* Mismatch between billing and credit card information.
* A system issue that interrupted the order entry flow

If the above occurred as a result of mismatched billing information, you will be contacted directly by one of our representatives within the next 2-3 business days.
If this does not happen, feel free to contact us at [emailprotected] or at 1(800)847-4096"

First thing i did was CALL that number and to my surprise the offices are closed on weekends what a co-incidence eh ? So i have emailed the above mentioned department demanding an explanation as i had made sure on many occassions with different reps. and its cannot be a "Mismatch between billing and credit card information". I have also emailed the sales rep. i got this laptop from. It's Sunday evening and i havent heard from either of them and i am so pissed at the moment because of this. I mean if anything like this was supposed to happen why not on Friday or Thursday ? Why on a Saturday when their offices are closed ? It just is too much of a co-incidence much like planned wouldnt ya say ? I have lost 2 days because of this and i am very unhappy with how things are going now as i might have to WAIT a week or so longer to get my laptop which i desperately need !!! It's just not fair Apparently for some kind of internal mistake/error or shortage of product, they had to cancel almost 2000 inspiron orders and re-order them. I was never notified of this and wouldnt have KNOWN if it wasnt for me to keep on calling them each day and bugging them about the status. I have said to them a thing or two which they will remember for future references ( i submitted a feedback form to the headquarters regarding this issue and how the customers are unaware of this sort of delay) Now my delivery has been delayed to 13th June which is a Tuesday and 4 days after the first delivery date. Now i am even more pissed in Dell and kinda hate them for doing this. But oh well i am not the only one suffering or am i They probably had a delay from a supplier. It happens. Just look forward to getting a great machine.I understand what your saying GX1_Man, but i am just so disappointed as i had very high hopes that i wouldnt have a single problem with Dell, after reading how poor their overall service is. I wanted the laptop desperately and wanted it ASAP as its one of a lifetime experience for me Embarassed Lols i have been calling them atleast twice each day since last week to get satisfied by the work they are doing on my laptop rofl

Solve : Help! How do I reconnect an Internal USB device????

Answer»

Hi,
I am becoming quite desperate now.... I have an embedded fingerprint reader on my laptop, and for some reason it's saying one of 2 things: either code 45 telling me it's not plugged in and to reconnect it (how do I do this when its built in??) or at other times it's saying there is an unknown device and telling me to DISCONNECT it. I can't go into hardware troubleshooting under control panel because it's saying it's trying to install something (for the last 2 weeks!?) and also when I try and safely disconnect the printer (apparently in the same root hub as the fingerprint reader/unknown device) it says I can't as another program is accesing it when as far as I know there isn't. It's driving me mad as I am getting a permanent beeping as if I'm connecting and disconnecting a usb device constatntly. I'm not very technical but please somebody help me out! Thanks, NatalieThese biometric devices have turned out to be a disaster in a lot of cases. Before we begin. Is the machine still under warranty and have you contacted the manufacturers support team?Yes, its only 3 months old. Its an HP laptop - have contacted HP NUMEROUS times through the online instant support chat thing but they haven't really been much help, I have just downloaded loads of things that haven't changed what's going on. When I have directly asked about the fingerprint reader, the issue has been nicely skirted around and diverted to more downloads and windows UPDATES that haven't helped either. When I tried to ring, I got put through to somewhere in Europe and was on hold for ages then was cut off. I can't seem to find a local place to take it to either (that will take a look under warranty without charging me).If you're in the UK, write to them and tell them that they have seven days to resolve the issue satisfactorily and finally or you will pass the matter on to the various consumer organisations and use the courts if necessary. Explain to them that in a competitive market such as the computer market, the bad publicity that you will ensure is generated is the last thing they need.
Other countries may have similar consumer rights legislation in place.Ok, will do, thanks: yes am in UK. I guess that means there's no simple way for me to reconnect it myself then. Oh well, WORTH a try. CheersTrying to would probably invalidate any warranty and let them off the hook completely.
Remember to communicate via recorded delivery only.Ah, very good point about recorded delivery! Thanks!

Solve : processor upgrade question?

Answer»

I have a very simple question. My computer is quite antiquated by todays STANDARDS and I am in the process of upgrading. My first priority is to get a new processor, the processor I am currently using is an Intel Pentium MMX 82439tx 233 megahertz. My problem is how do I find out how many pins my motherboard supports so i can upgrade to a newer CPU. If you need more INFO let me know and I will be glad to find out, any INPUT would be greatly appreciated.

ThanxIf you have a Pentium I - 233 that is probably as high as that motherboard can support.TO find out for sure we would need to know the exact motherboard MODEL. That could be found by running Everest Home.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html

Frankly a new motherboard would be required, then a new processor, then the different type of memory that would be required, then a hard drive that could keep up with it, a new power supply unit to run it, etc. You would be better served getting a newer machine rather than trying to upgrade this, cost wise.thank you for the link. I will run the program and get back to you with the info that you asked for.
