Solve : Need Help with something? |
|
Answer» Okay so i needed to confirm something for some time. I am using a wireless connection and i am paying for 1 MB/s. On Speedtest.net It tells me my download speed is 1mb/s. Does this "download speed" determine the speed at which i can download files from the internet or does it show the speed at which i can load web pages? Does this "download speed" determine the speed at which i can download files from the internet or does it show the speed at which i can load web pages You can speed up how fast webpages load on a computer by playing with the Browser Cache settings. It would make static pages load faster by dynamic pages like Yahoo etc that are constantly changing there probably wouldnt be much benefit. Its one WAY to load webpages without having to redownload all content that makes up that web page on each visit. Here is a way to do it with firefox. Other browsers have similar cache settings that can be adjusted to SEE if it makes things better. http://lifehacker.com/speed-up-firefox-by-enabling-its-new-http-cache-1570488335 A long time ago back when I had a single dial up connection with 2 computers sharing this running Windows XP around 2002, I used Squid Proxy Cache to make pages load way faster, BUT... back in 2002 the web was far more different than it is today. More static web pages back then and fewer dynamic. These days over 90% are dynamic changing on the fly, whereas a guess of 2002 internet websites maybe 50% were dynamic and the other 50% only changed when the webmaster went in and pushed an update to their website webpages manually etc. I dropped my bandwidth from 25/5 to 5/1 download/upload mb/s to save $30 a month and the biggest problem I had was with multiple users on that lesser bandwidth and streaming and download SUCKING up all the bandwidth at times causing problems such as the Vonage phone would cut out or get choppy during a phone call etc. I ended up fixing this issue by flashing my router with DD-WRT and configuring priority of service for critical devices to have an allocated section of bandwidth when in use. I limited all systems in my home to a maximum of 2m / 768k so that one with a download will not choke off others trying to watch netflix etc as well. If you are sharing this connection with others and want to have some control over how much bandwidth each device/user gets, DD-WRT works great. However 1mb/s bandwidth is really tight. I tested my network by intentionally bottlenecking my bandwidth with DD-WRT settings to see how little bandwidth I could get by with before it really crippled the network use. I thought I got down to 3m/768k and everything was good with that, but because I have Vonage, when the phone was in use it ATE up too much bandwidth and so Netflix would cartwheel, so 5mb/s is the minimum download speed that my household can get by on due to our use requirements. I was hoping to drop down my internet service to 3m/768k and pay even $15 less than what I was paying for the 5/1 service as for the pricing we have for bandwidth last I checked was: 25m/5m = $79.99 a month - Broadband Premium Service 5m/1m = $49.99 a month - Broadband Regular Service 3m/768k = $34.99 a month - Broadband Starter Service It would be nice to make the cost per month cheaper, but we need 5/1 in our home. I miss the days when ISP costs were $25 a month or less . |

Answer» This has been an on/off problem for the past few months. Wireless router from AT&T works just fine but then reboots for no reason at random. All lights go out for a second, power LIGHT begins flashing, and router goes through normal boot process. It comes back up and works after about THREE minutes. During the reboot every device is kicked off the NETWORK including PC connected with wired connection and VoIP phone for the house. Has interfered with uploading videos to YouTube, online gaming, and one important/business related phone call. Answer» Hi all, After having some problems with my internet dropping out, I CHECKED my connections and found that the cable going across the street to the easement on my property was filled with water. The first tech who was sent out didn't fix anything, and never showed up the next day to finish his job. The next tech was very good, he replaced the cable with water in it, installed two NIDs to keep water out, and was very friendly. He SCHEDULED an installer to come and re-wire my outlets 2 days later. zeeshan002 are you billcarlosbills? If you are it would be helpful to answer Geek-9pm's questions about your situation |

Solve : Laptop 30mb download Desktop 3mb download?!? |
|
Answer» Hey, What OS is on each PC ? Hi it's Windows 7 Home Premium. I just have AVG Free running. I tried disabling and ran test again but no change really. Drivers of network card seem up to date. Could it be a hardware issue in my network adaptor? ThanksBoth connections are USING WI-Fi? Wireless connections, by nature, can vary a lot deepening on a number of factors. But even so, a ten to one variation is not normal for two PCs in the same area. As a control, what happens if you use direct Ethernet cable? If that gives normal RESULTS, we can conclude there is a problem with the wireless adapters. Cheap USB Wi-Fi adapters are an easy WAY to test out your wireless. Some under $15 work as well as the high price models. Do Google search. You expect no more than 30 Mbps, so the type N adapter is not needed. The type G is good enough, it can do up to 54 Mbps. Quote from: Geek-9pm on April 22, 2015, 12:44:55 PM Both connections are using WI-Fi? I forgot I had a USB network adaptor. Just tried it getting less than 0.5mb download! Really strange. I don't have a long enough ethernet cable to test the hardwired connection at the moment, might have to buy one though to test. This is really bizarre. Here is a reference about your kind of problem: 10 reasons your Wi-Fi speed stinks Quote In addition to distance, the other wireless signal killers are the objects and elements that are in the way of throughput, namely water and metal. Water acts as a blockade for 2.42GHz signals, so it may be wise to get all objects in your home or office that contain any form of liquids out of the way (this includes radiators and flower pots -- no kidding!). Also make sure that metal objects are not in the way of your router and your clients: this goes for metal furniture as well as metal boards, tech gear, etc.But I still think you should try another adapter just to be sure. Quote from: Geek-9pm on April 22, 2015, 01:41:33 PM Here is a reference about your kind of problem: YES I don't think it's the distance / anything in the way as I tested the laptop from exactly the same location as my Desktop. I did try another adapter, no luck! |

Solve : Internet shuts down every 30 minutes to two hours? |
|
Answer» So I've been having a PROBLEM with my Modem-Router where it will shut down every 30 minutes to 2 hours. The desktop PC doesn't LOOSE connection because it's connected via ETHERNET to the router. Everything else connected using wireless looses connection. iPhone:I have been using cellular data (LTE) most of the time and I'm always running out. Can anyone help me with this annoying problem?Bump? No need to bump. I assume your router is also the modem. You can doable the wireless portion of the router and the Ethernet still works. You already know that. You can connect another router using the Ethernet connector. It should setup itself automatically. What I am suggesting is just use another router for the wireless stuff. Just a plain Jane thing with nothing fancy. Wall mart has some for $25 or less. You do not need the more expensive ones. But trying to repair the old one is a waste of time. It may be overheating. |

Solve : Can't connect to internet through ethernet. Please Help!? |
|
Answer» I have a DELL Inspiron small desk 3647 computer that's a year old. Connecting to the internet through Ethernet/Router was working fine until we had a storm and lost cable and internet service for a day and a half. My husband got internet back on his computer but mine will only recognize Wi-Fi. Keeps saying Windows did not detect networking hardware. Every time I run a scan to detect problems it says my connection is fine, I guess because I'm connected through Wi-Fi. Cable guy says no Ethernet driver. I'm not sure what to do or how to fix it. Please help! I have spent two days googling it and still haven't gotten anywhere. I think it lies between drivers and IP address but not sure what to do or how to do it. any help would be greatly appreciated. Like I said before it was working fine before the storm. My husband and I are on the same router but are wired separately. Mine is showing no other connections other than Wi-Fi. Sorry I forgot to mention I'm running Windows 8.1Did you say electrical storm? |

Solve : WoL on Turnkey Linux server? |
|
Answer» Hi! Understanding remote wake-upMore at... http://www.intel.com/support/network/sb/cs-008459.htm Thank you for the links! I looked at Ethtool. It was already installed so I ran the command #ethtool eth0. The output about WoL was: Code: [Select]Supports wake-on: pumbag wake-on: gFrom what I have read everything is ok. And in the BIOS S5 Wake on LAN is enabled. I can't see what is missing... You talked about workarounds. What are these workarounds? Thanks again! The main reasons for using WOL are: A. Lower power consumption and longer life of hardware. B. Better security with a log-in required. The first is the more important. The security issues can be handled other ways. The traditional work around is to use a modem /router that get the WOL message and then triggers a device to actually turn on the server. This is a method used whee the server hardware for some reason is not usable. The power composition of a good al WOL router is a fraction of a standard server. If you go that route, it is a case of just finding the right router that has WOL implemented for computers that don't work right with WOL by themselves. Router-Assisted Automatic Wake-on-LAN + Suspend OR Wake On LAN center The above is an alternative set of tutorials that cover the same materiel, but you might find a detail tare that you missed. Quote What router models support Wake On Lan (Standalone or via UDP forward to a broadcast address) ?... from the link. What kind of setup stuff be do you have? You might already have a router that does WOL . Some DD-WRT types have it. Please read over b doth links. You should get some ideas fro them. My high-tech ultra server setup - A TD-W8960N modem-router (I didn't see any WOL options in the configuration) - A good old HP Compaq DC7800P vPro My reason for wanting to use WOL is the power consumption. I'm running a game server to play with a few friends and I would like to start it when they ask me wherever I am. (I'm sorry, I should have said this earlier ) I looked at Wake on LAN center and tried the steps from Openclassrooms.com and downloaded Aquila WOL from sourceforge. Aquila doesn't see the computer, even when it is on. Even so, the Internet card's led is blinking when the PC is off, and I can connect from my Windows PC with WinSCP to browse the Linux files. S5 is supported by the hardware and it is on. The port 9 is forwarded with UDP to the IP address. WOL has no reason not to work First of all, I don't have a quick and easy answer to your problem with Linux. Instead, I'll just focus on a simple, reasonable hardware solution to the problem. As for the Linux issue. You could check with some of the many Linux forums and chat rooms available. Sometimes you will come across somebody that had the exact same problem and found the solution. Now about the hardware. Presently there are on the market a number of remote control switches that work over the Internet. In this case I'm not talking about switchers, but actually literal light switches. In fact some of them install in a light switch boxes. But can also get a light switch power plug that were works over wireless. Basically here's how they work. Your wireless router has to be open an online at all times and be able to do the proper port forwarding to allow remote control over wireless. Sometimes this feature is blocked, but apparently it's not hard to do. Otherwise, these companies wouldn't be selling these things ever was too hard to do. Expect to pay about $30 for one of these little gadgets and it should handle about 300 to 500 W of power. If that is an issue, there's a workaround around that also. Need to check the power rating. Once you get one of these devices you can play around with it and see how it works you send a signal over the Internet and it comes back to your wireless router and the wireless router relays it to the light switch controller. If you get the controller that has a plug, then you could just plug in a PC to the plug. But for testing purposes, you would start out with just a lamp see how the thing works. Now if there is a power limit issue, a little more hardware is required. Instead of switching the power supply on an off for the computer, you devise some method where the light switch controller could activate the power BUTTON in some fashion I'm sure others have done this, but I have not done it myself. Also, it may be possible to find controllers that have better power ratings. You probably want a controller that would take up to 800 W to handle your gaming server. By the way, how much power do you need to turn the thing on from a cold start?. Also, do you have your server set up to worry it will start up on cold start? This means you have to have some type of auto login script or a some other means to get around the password requirement for sign in. Once the computer is powered up, the script would start that monitors your network for an incoming request. Does that sound feasible to you? * In the USA a plug must allow current up to 15 amps to comply with safety standards. But the cheap comptrollers come from China. I am not certain if they are rated for that much current. On eBay about $30. Some a lot more. Photo from eBay [attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]The PSU is 240 watt. I will look on Linux IRC and maybe for a wireless switch if nothing works (the server already login automatically when powered on and I can access a web user interface on any internet browser). Thank you for your help! You are welcome. You forwarded the port? You really shouldn't be using Wake on LAN this way and I wouldn't be surprised if there was some sort of firewall in the way blocking it. You should only be sending WoL packets from within your LAN, not over the internet. If you want to send them over the internet you should first connect in to some device running from within the LAN and use that to send the WoL packets out.General Reference. This topic is considered in other places and the claim is made that one can turn on a device that is off or hibernating. The principal advantage is to reduce power consumption. On is one of many: http://www.pcworld.com/article/2687241/5-ways-to-use-your-pc-remotely.html Chris Hoffman in PCWorld on Sep 24, 2014 He gives a dire warning. Quote These DIY services aren’t as easy to use, HOWEVER. You’ll have to set up port-forwarding and dynamic DNS on your own to access them remotely. They’ll also be harder to secure, as any bot scanning your IP address from the Internet will see the services running on those ports and can attempt to break into them and compromise your PC. This isn’t a risk with services like TeamViewer or Parallels Access, which handle the authentication BITS on their own central servers. He mentions the Wake on LAN thaing. Quote PCs have long supported a feature known as Wake-on-LAN. When Wake-on-LAN is enabled on a PC, the PC’s network interface listens for a specially formed packet, even while the computer is powered off, hibernating, or in sleep mode. When the computer receives the packet, it powers on.But reading on, it is like Camerongray posted above. An always on device has to get the request from the Internet and turn on the PC over the LAN. So you need more hardware to make it work. The PCWorld article also recommends one read the documentation for the product called TeamViewe. http://www.teamviewer.com/en/res/pdf/TeamViewer-Manual-Wake-on-LAN-en.pdf Hope this helps. Quote from: camerongray on April 08, 2015, 06:55:13 PM If you want to send them over the internet you should first connect in to some device running from within the LAN and use that to send the WoL packets out. As I understood, you suggest me to remotely start and control my main PC with Teamviewer to open Aquila, then start the server... That is brilliant This IS the solution! Thank you a lot!!!Glad you got it to work. Here is one more reference to round out this thread. One may find a the term Tomato (firmware) used when talking about WOL tricks. Wikipedia has a entry that is a starting point. Quote Tomato (firmware)http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tomato_%28firmware%29 Ah yes, the article needs work. But still it does give about 25 links or references to related material. Anybody wanting to do a WOL project ought look. |

Solve : DHCP client-server in java! help! urgent!? |

Answer» I am having some trouble with my client and server codes , i need to send a mac address to the server and get an ip address in return, i ALSO need to MAINTAIN a list of ip adresses allocated and lease time also is involved in this. Need urgent help, been trying this for weeks Please give more detail. The term is used to describe two different concepts. At the administration levels of the Internet, "dynamic DNS updating" refers to systems that are used to update traditional DNS records without manual editing. These mechanisms are explained in RFC 2136, and USE the TSIG mechanism to provide security. We aren't here to do homework for you... |

Solve : 2 IP's for single NIC in ipconfig? |

Answer» This is not necessarily a problem as for the system runs fine, but this system was not installed or configured by me and I am trying to figure out what is going on with 2 IPv4 IP's listed when only a single IP I have thought forever could be used per Network Adapter unless a higher end server NIC with multiple RJ45 PORTS etc. C:\Users\user1>ipconfig/all Going into the NIC properties of the Windows GUI the normal static IP info is listed. Then going into advanced is when I find that there are multiple IP references. Solve : Wi-Fi Not Connecting to Internet? |
|
Answer» So, I've ran into a strange problem with my wi-fi; mind you, this problem did not exist before last night. Until yesterday, my wifi has worked flawlessly, ever since I set it up. It comes from my Zyxel ROUTER that I got from my internet provider, and I have not changed the settings since the wifi was setup. Finally, I came across a post [in Finnish] in Elisa forums which suggested changing the "channel" to anything in the range of 1-11. The default setting was "auto" and the modem took channel 13 by default. I now changed it to channel 1 and it works! To change the channel, I connected to the modem with the URL, 192.168.10.1 (when I was connected to the modem with the cable of course!). The user name and password by default were 'admin' and 1234. Then I navigated to 'network settings' and 'wireless'. The operating channel was 13 before I made any change. In the channel selection field I replaced 'auto' with 1 and applied the change!ZyXEL ADSL modem Linux wireless network problem What part of the world do you live? From Finland, and in fact the post you quoted is from my ISP's forums. Really nice digging that up, and even more so because it seems to have worked out. When I read it, I realized the modem was on "auto" as well and was using channel 12. The wireless interface has a channel scan which it uses to automatically detect the channel with the least amount of noise. I saw it yesterday but didn't realize to change it, since channel 12 was easily the one with least amount of noise. Once I made the change, my laptop immediately detected the wifi network. It took another model reboot until either my phone of the lap top could browse, but after that it seems to be working. Brilliant suggesting it. Thank you very much. The wi fi has been one of the last big problems I'm still having You're probably right though, the modem could probably use a firmware upgrade. I'm just kind of ecstatic about getting it all to work now that I'm reluctant to mess with it again. If it works, leave it alone. Postscript. In USA and many nutrients only channels 1-11 are allowed for Wi-Fi in the low band. Other areas have different rules. Some devices expect the 'USA' rules to be in effect. Wifi has 2 bands: 2.4 GHz (ch 1-11); 5.0GHz (channels above 100). What the OP is experiencing is interference on the much used 2.4GHz band. I had the same problem with a tablet that has both bands available, but the router only had the lower band. A dual band router solved all the connection problems. The only downside is that the less used 5.0GHz has less range & is unable to PENETRATE through more than 1 or 2 walls. |

Solve : Internet drops w\ TimeWarner cable modem -they claim it's the wireless router? |
|
Answer» Hi, everyone. I usually have 8 or 9 devices connected to the wireless router and I never lose the wireless connection. First, ruining n8 devices on wireless is pushing the envelope. Just one faulty device in the wireless system can cause a dropout for all other wireless clients. Next , you need to ask your ISP what they consider prof of bad service. Myself, I have dropout at least once a day, but the modem recovers in less that 60 seconds. So I do not even report it. Understandable your ISP is doing to blame your other devices. Statistically they are right. You need to run a test for at least 8 hours using only the modem. Rather that do pings, I would recommend you try downloading large files. Or watch Netflix or Hulu for hours at a time. If a dropout happens during a video stream, you will notice it. And it will show in the error log. EDIT: When you have a Tcpip event, it looks like this in event viewer. But first you must clear the event viewer, otherwise you find too much stuff. Above you see two events tat came when I cut power to my ATT modem. I'll try running something overnight, or while I'm at work and the kids are at school. I ran the ping test last night (7:23 pm to 10:13 am) and we lost internet for about 11 minutes and it recovered. There were 203 failures through the night. Only about 40 of them over 30 seconds. Only the 11 minute failure was over 1 minute. Unfortunately, I didn't run it connected directly to the cable modem as I didn't get your suggestion until today. I'll try direct connection tonight. How could 1 bad device connected via wireless connection to the router affect the connection from the router/modem combination to the internet? btw: our wireless devices consist of: 3 iPods 1 net-book 1 tablet 5 CELL phones + more w/ guests 3 PCs + more w/ guests 1 TV 1 blue-ray device 1 WiFi router 1 WiFi extender I don't consider that too much bandwidth for my provider. They are seldom all in use. Also, I can filter the event log and there was only 1 event that had source in {Tcpip, TCPIP, Tcpip6, Tcpip-SQM-Provider}. It was a IP address conflict during a time when internet access was fully functional. If you want your provider to listen, stop using ping testing. They are more impressed with TCP/IP errors in the log. Just one IP conflict indicates something is not working. You should never have a conflict. This kind of error is not a bandwidth ISSUES,. it is about things working right. DHCP is a low-level thing. If it fails, some hardware is acting bad.Is there something else I should use instead of ping testing? I don't have any TCPIP errors to impress anyone with. I just know that I lose DNS, and the router doesn't have internet access. The IP address conflict was weeks ago. I'm losing internet several times daily. Quote I am using a brand new Netgear N600 Wireless Dual Band Router (Model: WNDR3400v2).You have the manual, -Right? I think that router has a way of logging failures with the internet connection. If so, take a look and see if the errors on with the internet or will local traffic. And find the error code number. You can not use ping to verify the kind of error your have. You have to find a log from neither your Windows system or the internal log of the router. The log should have a code that enumerates the error type. ftp://downloads.netgear.com/files/WNDR3300_SM_12Nov07.pdf Quote SYNC Timing Synchronization failure - Failed to acquire QAM/Q... I honestly cannot figure out how this could be a problem on their end. This is the modem quite literally saying it cannot connect to the ISP network. (I guess is could be the cable wiring) The problem is you have to get to a level of support where the people actually know things, rather than just following a script. Otherwise, no matter what you say they are just going to be following the script before they give up.Ok, thanks guys. I'll look into reviewing the manual thing to find some kind of router logging. Although the NETGEAR tech support team told me to just use ping. The guy didn't sound like a NETGEAR expert so much as a 3rd party PC support salesman. Mastermind - I totally agree. We've called them 4 times. They sent out a guy who came out once and replaced the modem, some of the cable connections, and some of the cable he said was old. It was actually worse after he did that. Each time we call them we end up with a connect the modem directly to a PC and watch it for 4 hours. This may take a couple of days. I ran the first overnight with a direct connection from the PC to the Modem. There were 3 significant disconnects of 6.8, 3.8, and 1.8 minutes during which times the internet was unavailable. (The disconnects started at 11:54:56 PM, 2:45:25 AM, and 3:16:09 AM respectively.) There were no TCPIP type events in my event log. I did identify several event logs with source "DNS Client Event", but they didn't seem to correspond to the timeouts. The manual was a bust. There was no information about event logs for the router. I will contact NETGEAR again too, and see what they have to say. I'm still looking for help. What do the modem signals look like?
What was the model of the Modem? It is a Scientific Atlantic, -- Right? But what model number. Here's some of the info from the modems web page. I got the information on how to log into it from here: http://forums.cable-modem.net/index.php?action=vthread&forum=2&topic=1001 System Tab Name - SA DPC2203 Hardware Version - 1.1 Receive Power Level - 0.6 dBmV Transmit Power Level - 47.5 dBmV Cable Modem Status - Operational Vendor - Scientific-Atlanta, Inc. Boot Revision - 2.1.6lR7 Signal Tab Downstream Status - Operational Channel ID - 2 Downstream Frequency - 111000000 Hz Modulation - 256QAM Bit Rate - 42884296 bits/sec Power Level - 1.1 dBmV Signal to Noise Ratio - 38.1 dBmV Upstream Status - Operational Channel ID - 6 Upstream Frequency - 32000000 Hz Modulation - 64QAM Symbol Rate - 2560 Ksym/sec Power Level - 47.2 dBmV Let me know if you think the power signals are ok. Here is also a look at part of the configuration file for the modem, according to... Config Tab CM Configuration File NetworkAccessControl = 1 UpstreamServiceFlow = ServiceFlowReference = 1 QualityofServiceParameterSetType = 7 ServiceClassName = 'us_hsd_res' ServiceFlow SchedulingType = 2 UpstreamMaximumSustainedTrafficRate = 1024000 MaximumTrafficBurst = 6144 MaximumconcatenatedBurst = 6144 IPTypeofServiceOverwrite = 0x0000 DownstreamServiceFlow = ServiceFlowReference = 5 QualityofServiceParameterSetType = 7 ServiceClassName = 'ds_hsd_res' UpstreamMaximumSustainedTrafficRate = 15360000 MaximumTrafficBurst = 10000000 PrivacyEnable = 1 I don't know how to change the SETTINGS, but if it can help anyone determine anything.... Thanks in advance So - I don't know why no one has any other ideas. What is a good way to monitor an internet connection?Well, I called the Cable Company again and told them that I had bypassed my router and connected directly to the modem. They are sending a "Supervisor" out to see what is wrong with my connection. Thanks everyone. btw: I think it depends a lot on who answers the call. I'm still curious what else to use besides a ping test. I used the windows scripting host with the following network_ping.vbs file contents: Code: [Select]hostIp = wscript.arguments(0) logfilename = wscript.arguments(1) Set fso = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject") Set Shell = CreateObject("Wscript.Shell") ' OpenTextFile Method requires a Const value ' (Over)Write = 2 Append = 8 Set logfile = fso.OpenTextFile(logfilename, 8, True) shellstring = "%comspec% /c ping -t " & hostIP Set oExec = Shell.Exec(shellstring) wscript.echo "Ping Error log With Timestamp - Ctrl + C to halt" Do While oExec.StdOut.AtEndOfStream <> True pingline = Date & " " & Time & " " & oExec.StdOut.ReadLine logfile.WriteLine(pingline) If InStr(pingline, "TTL=") = 0 Then logfile.WriteLine("-----------------") End If Loop I run it at the command line like this: wscript network_ping.vbs google.com fileout.txt Then I review the txt file for disconnects. I can drop it into Excel and generate a graph of when I have disconnects. The left hand (vertical) scale is number of ping failures. It's about 5 seconds between ping failures. [recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]You could do more research on this, but here is the nutshell. Ping is used simply to confirm the network in usable at the present moment. Constant pings annoy some server administrators, so they will stop responding to t a stream of pings. In short, pings are a form of intrusive testing. Administrators don't like it. So you don't want to do 24 hours of one ping per second o yahoo or somebody else. There are a number of software p[products to monitor actual network performance. Normally there are a few errors from time to time. These are corrected 'on the fly' and the user may not be aware of it. The monitor software collects the error reports and builds a report with a statistical study of failure rates and severity. Errors easily recovered are 'soft errors' and are a lessor component of the report. The reports must be based on real data transfers, and not just ping tests. Of course this is not new information. But many of us just don't work full-time in network management and are not aware of what tools are used. Here is a free program you might like to try: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Network-Tools/Network-Monitoring/Server-Monitor.shtml Yeah, the name is Roadkil's Server Monitor, but it is a serious program. |

Solve : Best way to secure Wireless Network? |
|
Answer» Hello everyone, I wanted to ask if you could provide recommendations on software that can help protect my wireless network from ATTACKS? If you could kindly provide me with reliable websites or guides, that would be very HELPFUL. THANK you for your help. You don't need any sort of software, just use WPA2 security on the network.Thank you. I'm just a little bit worried about hackers that's why.Don't be - WPA2 is still classed as extremely secure. Also think of how far your wireless network reaches, someone would have to sit locally trying to get into it and even if they did, there isn't that much damage that they could do.hello you can ask him to simply change the password that would deauthenticate the USERS on the network. Else he may use MAC address filtering to allow specific devices through his network. |

Solve : 5GHz Wifi? |
|
Answer» Does ANYONE have any experience with 5GHz Wi-Fi? I'm contemplating buying an adapter AC for my PC but I'm not sure if it would be of much use given the range. My router is approximately 10-12 meters away from the PC. Windows claims that I am receiving 5 bars of signal on 2.4GHz but the speed is LIMITED to 2.5mbs So as an ALTERNATIVE I'm considering an antenna instead. |

Solve : Ping issues? |
|
Answer» I have a Dell XPS laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium that will not let other devices on the network ping it. It will however ping any other device it SEES. I have used Fing from my iPad to test this and used the ping command from CMD to test this. It also makes no difference if I am connected via wire or wireless as the results are the same. As far as I am aware all the network settings are set at the default settings. I have not had a reason to ping this laptop from other devices before so I am not sure if this is a new issue or one that has always been there. I have a school program that I now need to run on my laptop but access through my iPad but can't due to this issue. |

Solve : Computer Network Unstable? |
|
Answer» So this last weekend I began to have some networking problems with my computer and happening almost randomly. Since I haven't had a virus protector for a month or so, I decided to purchase one thinking that could have been the source of the problem. I did a full scan and restarted my computer but LATER on it was back to where I started. This usually happens when I try to do something with more usage of my internet (opening pages are fine, but loading videos or playing games causes trouble). I opened up task manager and looked at what speed I was receiving; the DOWNLOAD would just bounce up and down. At some POINT the download would just SHUT off for a period of time. I never had a time where the internet was stable. I even uninstalled a couple of the software a recently downloaded and that didn't fix anything too. I also attempted to connect to my hot spot and it wouldn't even connect. strong wireless adapter with great specsOne can not trust the specs. Bad things happen with wireless. For one, a new wireless device may have been installed by a neighbor and it conflicts with your setup. Try another wireless device. Or have a fiend bring over a portable talblet or notebook and compare. hi, i would suggest to check if windows update is set to automatic. I have seen this issue often all bandwith are "wasted" with updates. You mat try to change the settings by Opening Windows Update by swiping in from the right edge of the screen (or, if you're using a mouse, pointing to the lower-right corner of the screen and moving the mouse pointer up), tapping or clicking Settings, tapping or clicking Change PC settings, and then tapping or clicking Update and recovery. Tap or click Choose how updates get installed. Bandwidth wasted with updates? Really? Please feel FREE to ignore the above post.Well not every country have high speed internet connection. If you enjoy a high speed you wont see the difference but on slow connections you notice a change. |

Solve : Using desktop as access point (hotspot), or just purchase an access point?? |
|
Answer» As the title says, I am looking into use my desktop as an access point, or just purchasing an access point for my bedroom. The problem is, our WiFi signal is very, very weak in my bedroom that it is almost useless, but it works just fine anywhere else in the house. I have used a Belkin USB dual band WiFi adapter as an access point on here, but it would stop working that way and not want to do it again unless I restarted the computer. So my question is, pretty straight forward, what would be best? Directions to products will also help. Thanks for any and all help you guys can give me.Not all home network products are equal. A few Wi-Fi DEVICES ca be either the AP or the client. |

Solve : sharing files between windows 8 (x64) and windows XP (x86) machines? |
|
Answer» Hi. If all the PCs on your network are RUNNING Windows 7, Windows 8.1, or Windows RT 8.1, we recommend creating a homegroup instead of using this tutorial. It gives you a much easier way to share files and printers on a HOME network. For a step-by-step tutorial on creating and using a homegroup, see HomeGroup from start to finish.HomeGroup from start to finish So that should cover all the different issues. Bit I have not done it myself. Please LET me KNOW if that is the final solution. Forgot to mention. Solve : wireless router needs rebooting to re-connect each time? |

Answer» My router is a NETGEAR model supplied by AT&T. 7550. All other wireless devices (4 iphones, three ipads, 1 Ethernet connected desktop, and TWO wireless laptops) work fine with wireless router, but my HP laptop (HP Pavilion 17-c017dx Notebook (energy star)) running win 8.1 is allowed only one login. If I shut down the laptop and restart it the router will NOT CONNECT with it. I can always just reboot router but its a headache that must have an easy fix in configuration. on laptop with issue DHCP is enabled on private profile, Norton AV, REaltek wireless adapter, WPA2 Personal, AES ENCRYPTION. Thanks In Advance for any tips or solutions! |

Solve : Switching from Wireless to Wired connection? |
|
Answer» I am trying to make a switch from wireless internet connection to wired. I have connected an ethernet cable to the router and my PC. While plugged in, the GREEN light is on in the socket to show that there is a successful connection. I have tried a few different things to force my PC (Windows 7) to draw from the wired connection over the wireless and can't seem to get it right. update your driver from gigabyte official website.Maybe that could help. That seems to have done the trick. Looks like I just needed a driver. You are a gentleman and a scholar, I don't care what they say about you. Thanks! You are WELCOME. |

Solve : Can't get an ftphost? |
|
Answer» I tried ftp explorer and don't work. It used to work. I need a ftp before I get a host.I'm confused. No, you need web hosting that would LIKELY SUPPORT FTP, you would then use FTP to upload the files. The web hosting you are talking about is my internet provider, right ? If it doesn't support ftp client I SUPPOSE my IP is inadequet. Their MUST be some other way to be able to use ftp. 5 years ago I had dialup IP and it worked good. Quote from: jacobixxx8 on January 20, 2015, 09:12:47 AM The web hosting you are talking about is my internet provider, right ?That makes no sense at all, to host a website you need web hosting from a web host, this is totally different from your internet connection. What are you trying to connect to with FTP? |

Solve : Media Server Problems? |

Answer» First off I would like to point out that I'm not good with networking. So if you encounter media server problems from your router, be sure to check with your manufacturer for updates relating to DLNA protocols. Good to know... Thanks for sharing that in case others have same issue. Glad you got your issue worked out as well. |
