Solve : Difference between USB and Ethernet ???

Answer»

I cannot make out the DIFFERENCE between Ethernet and my USb modem.
When I google for any networking help, most of the websites gives me info about Ethernet but I can HARDLY get any help about my usb modem. What is the difference between these two??
What problems are you having?
I am having usual problems from TIME to time such as USB is not connecting or some others.
At this moment I do not have any problem but wanted to know the difference only for knowledge and to TACKLE the problems  which may arise in futureEthernet is how computers connect to each other over a network. It is an older, very stable connection method.

USB (Universal Serial Bus) is newer and more traditionally used for connecting hardware such as printers, keyboards, mice, cameras, and so on. It can be less stable than ethernet but its advantage is that in the most basic of ADSL modems, you do not require a separate power cord.

Most people tend to recommend ethernet modems for connecting as it is less temperamental and easier to install, which makes connection troubleshooting much simpler. Ethernet modem/routers operate independently of your computer and functionality doesn't depend on which OS you run on your computer.

Google for "USB vs Ethernet modem" - you will find much information.
Problems with USB are sometimes reported.
USB is a protocol that differs from Ethernet. So that can make a higher level of complexity. So some administrators decide to avoid USB when possible.
Some examples: Mass storage HDD that CONNECTS via Ethernet.  Printer that connects through Ethernet. FAX and Scanner that works with Ethernet.

Solve : Ethernet - "limited", invalid ip configuration?

Answer»

I've been having this problem lately with the ethernet on my schools campus. I'm running a windows 8.1 on an ultra book for those wanting to know. The connection used to give me the name of the university, until one day long ago i started to GET interested in this stuff and must have messed up some setting. Anyway the ethernet connection now is labeled as "unidentified network" and at random times it's connection will stop and become "LIMITED". The diagnose option tells me that the ethernet has an invalid ip configuration.  I've seen some tutorials that tell me to disable the internet protocol v6 in the ethernet properties, then insert certain IPs and DNS numbers in so it would be done manually. But Since this is a university I plan on leaving during breaks and would like this not to be a problem everywhere I go. I'd be grateful for the help if you have any ideas and ill answer as many questions as I cabMost universities have an IT DEPARTMENT that can aid the students in resolving issues like these for free as part of the tuition cost.

I wouldnt mess with IP, Gateway, and DNS info... set them all up for dynamic unspecified IP's as for the network that you connect to will give you a lease from DHCP and ALLOW you to connect.

Is this for a wifi or a wired connection to the college network? You could just delete all the settings for the connection (as in remove the connection from you PC) and then set up a new one exactly how you did it the first time around.

Solve : administrator passwordjust?

Answer»

can I reset the administrator PASS for my desk top computer from my laptopIts easier with a bootable disc to force change password at that SPECIFIC system. If it was easy to do it remotely we WOULD all be in trouble with insecure systems. But having physical access to the system, you can change it, but remotely CHANCES are no unless its a corporate network in which from any computer on network you can logon and ctrl+alt+delete and select to change password etc.

Solve : Spoofing MAC address to get Roku to connect to free hotel wifi?

Answer»

While out on business trip, I ended up buying a Roku from Walmart and soon found out that in order to use it at the Marriott, that I WOULD have to use my laptop to spoof the wireless network with the same MAC address of the Roku in order to use the browser to accept the free wireless terms and conditions in which the hotels network gives a 7-day lease to allow wireless internet.

I attempted to do this first with my Toshiba Satellite running Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 and couldnt figure out how to change the wireless adapters MAC address.

Fortunately I also brought my Toshiba Netbook with me running Windows XP Home SP3 which allowed me to easily EDIT the MAC address to that of the same as the Roku ( with the Roku not powered ) to accept the wireless terms and conditions for 7 free days of use, and then I was able to set my netbook MAC address back to the original that I wrote down before spoofing it as the Roku's MAC address.

I then was able to turn on the Roku and watch TV shows on Crackle and NETFLIX etc.

Question I have is, is there a utility out there that allows for ease of editing of a wireless adapters MAC address with Windows 7? ....  since its easy on the netbook running Windows XP, but I couldnt find a way to quickly do it with Windows 7 without for example one person SUGGESTING a registry edit to alter the mac address. Not sure if this would help http://www.gorlani.com/portal/projects/mac-makeup-the-originalThanks Jason ... This looks like it should do the trick. Thanks for pointing this out. Interesting that it also has a random mac address GENERATOR too. Looking forward to playing with this software when I get home from work.
 Found also this http://www.zokali.com/win7-mac-address-changer/ Cool

Solve : what modem/router should I buy??

Answer»

Im looking to upgrade my modem due to wifi drop outs(Enthernet cable does not drop out) and alot of traffic. First off my ISP is Clubtelco, I have ADSL2. the devices that will be connected are; 1 desktop computer used for gaming, 2 PS3's, an 8 channel DVR, a D-Link 345 NAS storage device and a few smart phones. I understand i will be limited by my ISP's speed but when im gaming i usually disconnect or turn off other devices but the wifi still drops out alot.

So I was wondering if there is a mid range modem I can BUY that would for one work better with my NAS and two will not drop the wireless SIGNAL every 10 minutes. If you wanted to save money in not having to buy a modem/router combination, you could always attach a new router to the existing modem/router combination. Shut off the troubled wireless on the old one and make the new wireless active.

I did this a while back when I found a good deal on a wireless access point and didnt need to replace my router which was wired only. I just plugged a patch cable between say port 3 on the wired router and the internet port of the access point and everything ran fine once the security wifi settings were configured for WEP at the time on Wireless B.

Since then, I have placed routers in series as a double hardware firewall and to distance my HOME systems from systems that have port forwards that if compromised could give someone access to my LAN, by having 2 routers in series with the first having port forwards etc for hosting servers etc allowing access from elsewhere, and my private home systems under max security with no port forwards and different router brand/make/model, and admin password. So that the worst that could happen if there was a ZERO day exploit that hit a SERVER of mine if that they make it into the first LAN, but not to the private LAN that is 2nd in series away from the internet.

*This adds a small amount of latency, but other than looking at ping ms differences between systems on LAN1 closest to the web and LAN2 which is furthest from the web, the small latency is otherwise not noticable to users on LAN2.

Solve : Laptop keeps disconnecting from Internet but always has signal?

Answer»

Hello.

I have an MSI CX61 laptop and it will be connected to the internet and then I will be no longer connected to the internet. It will still show that I have signal to the router though. This has happened on my router and a friend's, at other times though I will experience no problem.

I've taken the specs from the NVIDIA Experience panel.

GPU: GeForce 820M
CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-470MQ CPU 2.20GHz
Memory: 8.00 GB RAM (7.92 GB Usable)
Wireless Card (maybe): Realtek RTL8723AE Wireless LAN 802.11n PCI-E NIC

I'm not sure what other information is needed, if any, but I will be happy to provide more.

Thank you.
Have you performed a driver update for wireless at all?

Do any other systems experience the same issues at the same time that are on wireless? ( * To test this I would have 2 wireless computers connected to this same wifi and perform a persistent ping and look to SEE if the connection only DROPS out on the 1 computer or both at the same time. To do persistent ping run something like:

ping www.google.com -t

from command shell which you can get to by Start-RUN->CMD or entering CMD in Search window of Windows 7 or 8 ETC to bring up command shell.

If the problem is SHOWING ping problems at the one laptop only then you know its specific to that 1 computer, however if both systems are having issues then you know its a wireless issue ( or ) the internet connection is dropping out and coming back which can be modem, router, or service provider issue.

Solve : How do I protect my computer using public wi-fi??

Answer»

I have a Lenovo laptop running Windows Vista Home Premium and will have to use public wi-fi wherever I can find it for a few months.  However, I am really not too comfortable with this and would like to know what I have to do, or what programs I need to keep my COMPUTER from "CATCHING" a virus out there in the big world.  I am running NORTON's Antivirus and using Windows Firewall, Malwarebytes, CCleaner & SpywareBlaster.  Thank you....I'm moving this out of the malware section and into the networking section. When you set up the wireless connection you'll be asked if it's a public or private network. Just MAKE sure you choose public. Other than that, take the same PRECAUTIONS you would if you were using your home network.

I'm experiencing quite an annoying problem. The sites I frequent most are not displaying properly in any of the browsers I use: IE, Firefox, Chrome.
The sites I frequent are: Imdb, facebook, and the Flipkart. Yahoo, MSN, and Facebook will actually load, except they take an extremely long time (like BACK to the dial up days) and they only DISPLAY an abridged, TEXT only version. There are no colors, backgrounds, and mostly no pictures. It's the same with all three browsers. I have also cleared the cache and cookies and also reinsyatlled all the browsers. But the same problem exist. I have also attached the screenshot please HELP

Solve : Port forwarding issues?

Answer»

Hey peeps, so I'm trying to make a Minecraft server on a Tunngle room, I understand that I need to open ports, so I made the acceptions on FIREWALL for the port, and I tried to forward the port on my router, but they seem to be closed still so I don't understand what ips do I have to write in my router settings, currently I have:
TCP25565, UDP25565 as incomming and outgoing on my firewall and 25565 set on 192.168.0.103(my computer IP)

also I tried my internet ip (88.***.***.***.***) and it doesn't let me use that, so I tried my router's ip (192.168.0.1) , it did let me put that in but my port remained closed...

what am I doing wrong ? should I try putting in my Tunngle vIP in my router port forwarding settings ? or maybe I should use port triggering instead ?Not sure how Tunngle works exactly, but port forwarding directs out outdoor IP to a specific LAN/VPN IP based on the port.

If tunngle is like a normal network (just a server based VPN), then you would need the static IP of the VPN, and the target machine/server. That would be information that you'd have to either get from Tunngle, or be pretty tech SAVVY to figure out on your own (assuming, that is, that you don't already have it).

If tunngle is something that you host from you machine, then it's a little more complex (IMO) because you'd have 2 layers of forwarding.

Simply, I don't know enough about the function of Tunngle to be certain. What I'd advise is that you check around in the Minecraft/Tunngle forums and possibly consult with Minecraft/Tunngle Support. They would be your best bet most likely.

Good luck!  Thank you for the reply, strangely however, we managed to get it running without any changes to the setup... it just started WORKING for some reason

Solve : Determining How much internet im using??

Answer»

Greetings CH!

Currently attending University I have a 5GB cap per day. I was wondering as im using my Desktop, Laptop and Iphone if there was a way to monitor how much im using per day on windows and mac and i do have an IOS app that does that already. Thanks Only methods i know of involve either a DD-WRT router in between your college internet connection and these devices which has the ability to log bandwidth

( or )

Windows 7 computer with a Network Gadget running with 2 network ADAPTERS and the 2nd adapter is acting as a gateway connection to the 1st network adapter that is connected to the college network.

( or )

Ask the college to see if they have a feature available that allows you to see how much you have used and how much you have left.

Below is a pic of a Gadget that I use with Windows 7 that allows me to monitor my network and watch my bandwidth usage. Its below the CPU/RAM meter gadget that I use in the same pic. You can zero it out and have it start from 0.00 at any time for CURRENT and Total Bandwidth usage. The Current resets with every reboot and the Total counts up the bandwidth use since the last manual reset of the gadget. ((( * Microsoft has a vulnerability with Gadgets, but I continue to use the few that i have used for years, because the vulnerability with gadgets is if you have one that is a bad gadget and these that I have have been FINE for the last 3 or 4 years. )))

* Also I edited the IP's in the pic to be covered up using mspaint to hide my confidential internal and external IP info.

Solve : Constant short ping spikes while gaming?

Answer»

Hi guys, as the title says i'm having an issue where I'm having major pings spikes during all online games that makes them unplayable. So far I have tried multiple things to try and fix it. I've used a wired connection and wireless connection and I still receive the spikes. I had recently reformatted the computer and INSTALLED all the drivers. I have also ran Antivirus/Malware scans and they came back clean (as I expected as its basically a new computer). I have lived in two locations in the last 10 months and both locations had the same issue.

I play games like: D3, LoL, WoW and others like so and the issue is among all of them.

My specs:
Windows 7 HOME Premium 64-bit (Bought)
Intel Core i5 4670K 3.40GHz (Asus has a soft-clock on the board which makes it 4.1)
16.0GB Dual-Channel DDR3 801MHz
ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. Z87-PRO (SOCKET 1150)
2047MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770 (EVGA)
120GB Samsung SSD 840 PRO Seri SCSI Disk Device (SSD)
1TB Seagate ST1000DM ST1000DM003-1CH1 SCSI Disk Device (SATA)

Any help would be appreciated, Thanks.EDIT: Just tested by running "ping google.com -T" while playing a game of leagueoflegends. Ping would spike to 1000ms for a packet or two then return to normal. This ONLY happened when I was playing a game. Not by just idling. The ping is constant 39-40ms when no games are running. Edit 2: So I have been working on this issue myself for the past few days and decided to take out the video card and run it off the Onboard Video from my Motherboard. I loaded up a game and I played solid with zero ping spikes for the better part of an hour. I was able to get my hands on a old Video Card, AMD Radeon 6870, and plugged it in to try it. Like the onboard video, the game ran for about 30mins with no ping spikes. I then tried putting back in the GTX 770, and it also ran for about an hour with no ping spikes.

I left the computer on and stepped away from the computer for about 4 hours and returned only to find that about 30mins into D3 the ping spikes were back and it seemed to happen only when a lot of things were happening. I figured that it was most likely my video card causing the problem and swapped back out to the AMD 6870 and it too was having the spikes when a lot of things started to happen.

Hope this helps.

The only suggestions I could give are updating the drivers in QUESTION. BIOS, video, network and router firmware just in case including checking for patches in the game forums itself. Quote from: jason2074 on September 22, 2014, 09:49:05 PM

Personally I would not advise updating BIOS unless there is something wrong with yours and/or there is an update that is classified as "crucial" or something. It's not that something "will go wrong", but if something did go wrong, it would be disastrous.

Since your only experiencing this problem while gaming, it is most likely due to your GPU. There is likely either something with the driver, or potentially something wrong with the chip. If you haven't changed any setting recently, that's probably not the issue - however you could try restoring the defaults if possible. Another thing you can do is try bringing the in-game settings way down and see if that changes things. All these little test will point you in the right direction.

Solve : Multi-layer Firewalls on network?

Answer»

So I wasn't able to find anything on the forums (if there's already a topic on this, sorry!) but I am looking for some general theory advice.

If I wanted my network to be solid and really difficult to GET into, what's the best way?

Obviously ENTERPRISE FIREWALLS are better than CONSUMER, but what are other avenues?

Is it acceptable to "layer" multiple hardware firewalls?

I imagine multi-layered firewall protection would be slower, but would the data even be understandable when it get's to the client?

Anyway, just something I'm curious about cause I recently setup my own Endian Firewall machine, and I'm curious if stacking the FWs like that is possible/workable/correct. Thanks in advance!

Solve : Chronic Lack of Network?

Answer»

Hey guys, I have an Acer Aspire running WINDOWS 8 that for the past six months or so has been doing this really weird thing with my home network. I'll just be doing whatever and I'll suddenly lose connection. (Sort of, the network center says "Limited Access," but I can't actually connect to anything." Anywhere from a couple seconds from a couple minutes later, I'll get it BACK. This happens roughly every five to twenty minutes. This is the only computer out of five on my home network that is doing this, and it's also the only one running 8. Anywhere outside of my HN I can connect. I've tried disabling all of the power-saving options, reformatting the disk, EVEN signing up with a new internet provider. Absolutely nothing has worked. I feel like this could potentially be a very SIMPLE solution, but I haven't found any other problems like this yet and I'm not exactly an expert in networking. If you could offer any help I WOULD really appreciate it.

Solve : I cannot see my web Server from behind my Linksys Router with ISP Static Address?

Answer»

I am a NEWBIE, to the Computer Networking, currently learning it.

-Can someone please help me???

I have a Zentyal Server with an external NIC (For Internet) and Internal NIC (For LAN)
>>>My Problem is I cannot see my Zentyal Server on the Internet.

-My 2nd problem is my domain name is not pointing to my server even after I pointed it to my static IP address

-What I did I changed the “A Record” at my domain register (register.com) and set it to the Static IP Address provided by my ISP. (96.58.X.X2)

I have a one Motorola Modem/Router provided by my ISP with the following settings
With a Subnet of 255.255.255.252

-The ISP router is in bridge mode

-WAN Port 1 is setting up for static IP address by ISP and the other 4 ports are dynamic with an local IP Address of 192.168.0.1

-My router is a Linksys 1900AC

Is set with the ISP Static Address 96.58.X.X
With a subnet of 255.255.255.252

--My Local Network within Linksys Router is:
192.168.1.1

-My Zentyal Web Server is setup on IP Address 192.168.1.75 with it being static locally within my router

-I used port forwarding of the following:

-Port 80 as TCP Protocol on IP address 192.168.1.75

-Port 443 as TCP Protocol on IP address 192.168.1.75

-This is just for starters, I just wanted to be able to see is on the Internet.

I can get to the Internet on all devices in my network.

But when I use port forwarding I cannot see my web server at all.
-I did a test to make sure my web server was working properly, I removed my Linksys Router and placed my web server directly into Motorola ISP Modem/Router on WAN port 1 and it worked just fine after assigning it the static IP Address, default gateway, & subnet given by ISP to my Zentyal Webserver external NIC.

I also have a noip.org account that I was using dynamic IP Address but I was having problems getting my email back to my server, I could send email to other places just fine but getting email back was the problem, this was before I got a Static IP from ISP.

My Zentyal Server supports noip.org for use of dynamic IP Addresses so your web server NEVER loses it's connection to your domain name or the Internet connection etc.

My ISP is Bright House Networks and they state that they do not block inbound nor outbound ports.

You can download Zentyal Server for 100% totally free at www.zentyal.com.

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]You explanation is hard for me to understand.
Do you  understand the following ideas.
Using the dotted decimal notation, there is a possibility of having up to  about 4 billion numbers. The would range e from 0.0.0.0 up to 255.255.255.255 if all combinations were allowed. Bu in reality, not all are allowed.
A long time ago it was determined that a large set of numbers would be used only for WAN and a smaller set of numbers would be used for LAN. This ,eans the LAN number are used over and over again with no conflict because then never go out onto the WAN

So computers in my home might be using some numbers in the range of maybe 192.168.1.50 to 192.168.1.99 and maybe a neighbor down the street, or even across the country,  just might be choosing  same set of numbers for his LAN.  So I will never see his computer ans he will never see mine. Because the router is programmed not to let those number be used eternally.

Do you get the picture?
Going by your diagram your modem is also a router, is this correct?  In this case you would also need to forward the ports you require in this motorolla device to your linksys router and have the linksys then forward it to the final PC.   This is called Double NAT.

This will get quite messy so ideally if you can it would be best to see if either the motorolla device has a way to disable the routing and use it purely as a modem or also try connecting the modem into one of the LAN ports on the Linksys rather than it's WAN port to see what happens as this will bypass the NAT in the linksys. Thee is something wrong here. He said Internet.

A campus or enterprise server is an Intranet server.

Did the OP want Internet or Intranet?
The worldwide web is the Internet  and the IP addresses are under an  authority that specifies who can use an address. And the DNS SYSTEM teaks about 72 hours to DEPLOY world-wide.

So maybe the  OP confused about the difference between:
° World Wide Web  (The earth)
 ° WAN  (a campus)
 ° LAN  (a building)
 ° Sub net  (a classroom)

It takes several hours to make a  domain name to come up on the  World Wide

This can safely be ignored.

Also, you said you have a dynamic IP address yet are trying to run a mailserver.   This will cause you a lot of problems, most email providers simply reject emails that were sent from a dynamic IP address, you will really need to get a properly static IP in order to do this.

Just got done installing Ubuntu Desktop version I think it's called needless to say I don't have any idea how to make it a dual boot SITUATION now I clicked on Wubi installer and it seemingly did as now I can see it in the Files part of my windows SYSTEM files it's where the disk drive would have shown up I don't believe it took that drove over but I don't care I just don't have a cd or USB flash drive and the other night I had an issue with a "friend" as he screwed up my new laptop and ask my USB and computer drives but alot of work later I combated the virus for the most part I just need a good is easy like I heart Ubuntu to be so o can test apps and programs to help with my PC's security... Thanks and I hope this makes sense I essentially just need to know after installing and opening the Ubuntu.iso file and it installed seemingly with no partition as I have a choice to ADD that I'm not sure what to do all the tutorials and what not are about using a CD like I assume a disk and or a USB flash drive I don't have either.

Hopefully it makes sense... I tried. This is my FIRST post what does anyone expect LOL. JK...Many here are willing to help.
But this is not a chat. We only work with detailed information
It sounds like you need to chat with Ubuntu u users.
You can start here:
http://community.ubuntu.com/

If yu boot Ubuntu in the 'Live'  mode, it does not take and hard drive space. It rums in memory. There you  can resize the petition and create a new one for Ubuntu. This does not destroy Windows, but it will zap the boot loader. So you later have to 'repair' the windows boot loader.
Get on an Ubuntu chat and ask OTHERS how they did it.

Solve : Local only internet Connection?

Answer»

For a while ive been having the same Internet problems with my connection showing local only, both with wireless and with a LAN connection. Its now got so bad that ive literally got just a few minutes connection before it kicks me off.

Ive scanned Internet forums for an answer to this with limited luck; one solution to change the Internet connection to obtain an IP address automatically works SOMETIMES but then cuts out minutes later.

Im using Windows Vista with Sky broadband but can see this is ALSO affecting Windows 7 users also.

Whets GOING on here, I can’t believe there is no PERMENANT SOLUTION to this?
That company is in a STATE of change. THINGS might get better. Maybe not. You just have to work with the company. There is no 'magic bullet 'that makes it work.

The press in the UK reports some users are not happy. This is from last year.
Sky Broadband struggles with demand after adding subscribers
Quote

Sky has acknowledged that some of its customers are experiencing slow internet speeds as a consequence of it signing up new subscribers.
Sorry I can not offer help. Here on this side of the pond we have to put up with AT&T and some other big companies.

BTW: This seems to be another case of where a company advertises very high bit rates but can not meet the demand.  The high sped that talk about is the peak possible performance under the best of conditions. The pragmatical sped is decimated.

Solve : AT&T bill shows huge increases in data download?

I'm not even sure how to refer to this succinctly enough to search the problem on these forums.  Our DATA plan allows 150 gigs of data downloaded per MONTH, with 50 gig automatically added for $10 when that amount's exceeded.  We've been using this plan with no problem for years, but suddenly (like in the last two-three weeks) we're showing days of 25-35 gig downloads.  (We don't stream movies or music, we have only the two home computers connected to the internet by LAN cables).  We thought that maybe someone in the neighborhood had gotten a free ride on our wireless, so we turned that off, and also changed the key and password.  That helped for about 4 days, and then the big downloads showed up again.  AT&T agree that our history doesn't match current usage, was helpful in getting to the Netgear page to turn off wireless, but otherwise not taking much of an interest in this weirdness.  It seems to me a useful, though excessive, step to turn the router off completely when we're not using it, but mainly I have two questions:  1. will it harm the router or computer to just unplug the router and plug it BACK in when we need it? and 2. does this sound to anyone else like one of our computers has some malicious use being run REMOTELY despite Kasperski anti-virus and Ad-aware scans being run daily?

Any thoughts would be hugely welcome.  The computer I'm working on is an ASUS CG5270 quad core 8 GB 64 bit.  Windows is VISTA Home, Service Pack 2.  Video card is Nvidea GeForce GT 220, which Blizzard tells me is no longer useful for Warcraft.  The other computer is an A-open running XP, not sure of the details, but can get them.Any thought? Solve : Getting extrememly slow internet through Ethernet?

Answer»

Recently my computer is having problems with its inter through ether.

I first switched to ethernet after having multiple issue with it using wifi. THis is a computer I built myself and SPENT a good deal of MONEY on so this is bothering me quite a bit.
Specs:

I run a speed test and it ramps up to the speed it should be at but then slowly gets slower and slower, it won't even make it through one speed test.

Not an actual example but I can't really upload the pic from the other computer.

I already tried the cable with my laptop and it worked fine, and this had worked up until when I turned it on today. I have scanned with malwarebytes and quarantined what came up and the PROBLEM persist. Here is the net graph as it was trying to load a page.

Here's the IPCONFIG

Solve : Help! Wireless connection?

Answer»

hi everyone! Thanks for the help in advance.

So my router was remote rebooted yesterday, and in all my devices I had to manually search for my network to reestablish my connection. But on my computer I don't find it on my wireless network list. So I look for it manually, then it tells me the connection already exist and to look for it in my wireless network list. I'm trying to find where I can see and manage my Internet connections to make it forget the existing network and I can re establish it. Or anything that would fix this.. Thanks again! Quote

So my router was remote rebooted yesterday
By who? The network service provider?
Sis you TALK to them about this?
What model router? How many devices on your local home network?
Can you plug you computer directly into the router?

You did not explain  what "rebooted" means.
Did it cycle through the power on off thing?  That is a 'soft' reboot and does not change settings.
Did the router go into a factory reset? That is a 'HARD' reboot an destroys all custom settings, including station ID, wireless password and some other things.

Yes by the service provider. They explained that it was the same as me pressing the reset button on the router.. But this has never happened before. I haven't talked to them yet cuz it happened yesterday and everything else works fine ( ipad, phone, wireless printer)

Yes currently I have the comp plugged in and it's working great. But I need the wireless. Um I'm not sure if they did a hard or soft but I'm guessing hard..

I'm pretty sure the problem lies in windows 8.2 (as its normally the culprit..)

But can't find the settings I need to reset the wireless NETWORKS on the comp.. Thanks for ur reply btwLet's assume the reset change the wireless password.
The default wireless info should be on the underside of the router.

OK. Yeah, Windows 8 is a little BIT suborn about a wireless reset. But keep at it and somehow  it will 'discover' that the wireless password has been changed.
This link is for windows 8.1 only.

Hello there, i want to ASK is someone is it possible my internet to be weak due to SLOW HDD.(got that CLAIM from my ISP that my slow inet is due to bad/slow hdd) Thanks!A bad hard drive can slow the whole computer down but not just the internet connection. So hdd is not RESPONSIBLE for my bad net as my isp technicians claimNo it's not. SOUNDS like they are making up excuses.i would check your internet speed by preforming a speed test but there are many reasons as to why the internet could be slow.
you could also remove temporary internet-files such as cookies to help speed up browsing

Solve : Adding my wifi router wired to an existing router on a public network??

Answer»

I just moved into a new apartment that includes free WiFi in the rent. But it is a public network that, from my understanding is only secured behind the router VIA PASSWORD, but not within the network itself. So I asked the owner to connect my Netgear N150 router input wired to one of the wired outputs on the public network router (also a Netgear). The public network owner (my landlord) said he knows little about computers etc and said he would ask the man who manages his network about adding my router as I described.
That man may have some questions such as:
 (1) will this affect the service from the ISP in any way?
 (2) will it make his network less secure or affect it negatively in any way?
 etc etc etc.
I would think it would not affect his wifi, and will even help the speed since this will make 1 less device on that wifi network (there are 8 devices on it now) - (mine will actually be wired as far as his network is concerned).

So won't this then make the 802.11n signal from my router secured from his public network via my password? Therefore, I then can network my 2 computers safely behind my router?

I'm not very knowledgeable about all this and what I described is just my interpretation of how it works. So where am I misinformed and what should I tell him about doing this?

I do some volunteer medical oriented work with some individuals who share sensitive medical information with me therefore I cannot do this work on a public network, so a solution for this is very important to me, and to the ones I work with. So as always, thanks for any help on this matter.

Even while  on a public network you can have a level of protection from intruders.
There are a number of  articles s on this topic. Here is one:
How to Stay Safe on Public Wi-Fi
Perhaps that may help.
Thanks for the link but I really want this router installed if it's not going to cause a problem. I just realized that this also may increase my connection speed - there are 4 users using this network right now and it's slow.
So if I install my router, I will reduce any slow issue due to activity volume limits of the wifi transmission. Instead, I will have 100% of the wifi transmission from my router for myself only, and this will be limited only by the volume constraint of the wired connection limit through the router. Correct.
So is doing this going to cause any problem?Your assumptions are not supported by facts. Internet speed is set by the ISP. It is not a function of the router. (Unless you have fiver optical cable.)
If the router is of good quality, the rule is:
"When there is one active user, the full speed of the network is available."
Time division works only when other users are active. It is a dynamic system.

About having more that one router in a home or small business network. Personally I have only used three routers  in my local network. Mostly because of the distance of the cable. Runs under 100 feet between routers are preferred. with 300 feet being the piratical maximum with good cable.

Only one router can control DCHP. (You can make an exception, but it is not worth the effort.)

Because  my personal experience is l limited, maybe an active IT PERSON will tell you how to improve security with two routers.  Cost would be a factor, otherwise you would just buy your own service. In an enterprise network there are ways to split up the network and improve privacy.  This is costly for a small local network.

What I am say s that if privacy is a high issue, the use of a separate service is recommended.

Just trying to help.

Doing some research, some say its OK to use two routers on small network.
How to Connect Two Routers on a Home Network
Quote

This guide explains how to set up a router for home computer networks. The exact names of configuration settings on a network router vary depending on the model and whether it is wired or wireless. However, this general procedure will guide you through the process for the common kinds of home network equipment.
Let me know if that is what you want.
We are getting there. Most of this I already know. I have used multiple routers before and it was nothing more COMPLICATED than pluging in the power adapter and the ethernet cable. The 1st router then assigns an IP Address to the 2nd router just like it would if it was an additional PC. That's all there is to it in most situations.

But the type of things that I was looking for answers to is that I had forgotten that sometimes it is necessary to change the channel on which the 2nd router operates in order to limit the chance for radio frequency interference between the 2 routers. It's very possible this will be needed in my case because both routers are the same model made by the same manufacturer.

Can anyone else think of any issues I may encounter? If I connect this and it causes a problem, then my new landlord may not give me an opportunity to go back and change channels or whatever else is a problem. I need it to be right the first time.

The routers should have at least a spacing of one meter or more physically. The channel spacing should be 3 or more . Example, Ch 5 and 9. Or Ch 3 and 6.

Got it installed and working fine. This makes my two PC's the only two on my network so that's what I want. Default router access password has been change from default to my preference as well as SSID and WiFi login password.
There are seven different routers within range of my wifi location (highly populated residential area), I set my router channel to 9. The closest other router set to channel 9 are two routers on 6 and one router on 11.
So thanks Geek-9pm for the help once again. I'm happy to be on a private network and now I have a bunch of secure work to get caught up on....

Solve : wired internet connection problems?

Answer»

Hi IVE got Sky wireless broadband, I get a lot of interference on my Internet connection, with it cutting out frequently, so decided to set up a LAN wired connection between the router downstairs to the computer upstairs with the wire under the floorboards.

Ive plugged it in but getting no wired connection, if i pull the wireless adapter out. Would this be a problem with the network card or Ethernet?

Have you tried a different computer on the cable?Hi thanks for getting back to me.

The cable & router are working, i tested first the router by taking a cable out of my sky box & putting it into my laptop and it shows IM receiving a LAN connection.

I then went upstairs and plugged the end of the LAN cable from my desktop to my laptop & again im getting a LAN connection, so its not a nail through the wire or faulty router luckly.

Before moving home a few years ago i was receving a LAN connection ok, but had SINCE UPDATED my harddrive.

I went on device manager and it shows Microsoft ISATAP Adapter as not working giving the following error message:-

This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)

But i dont know if a LAN connection requires a network adapter of Ethernet. When i click on Ehernet in device manager it gives the following error:

The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)

I searched google and cannot find any drivers for these. I downloaded the DAN 530s driver updater & it SAYS all my drivers are updated so where do i go from here?Fixed. I used the driver CD that came with the PC. I would have thought that the online DELL driver download would have noticed the missing LAN driver though.

Solve : Pavilion G7 Internet connectivity issues?

Answer»

HELP!! I am working on a laptop for a consumer and I am stuck hard. The laptop is a Pavilion G7 with Windows 7 64-bit. The machine was given to me under the premise of "INTERNET does not work". I have used wireless and hardwired METHODS of connecting. The wireless properties and LAN settings say that the laptop is connected and has Internet access. I can ping outside addresses from the machine, and can ping the machine from other devices on the same network. It also pulls a valid ip address according to an ipconfig. However, when you try to pull up a website, it gives a "website cannot be found" page. This happens on IE, Firefox, and Chrome. All chipset drivers, ethernet drivers, and wireless drivers have been uninstalled and reinstalled. They are the newest drivers available from HP's website. I have even replaced the wireless NIC thinking it may just be a bad card. I've checked the IPv4 settings and all is set RIGHT. Thinking of possible DNS issues I tried using straight IP addresses to connect to webpages but all to no avail. I have even used a USB network adapter which said connected, but no webpage access. I am quite baffled and need some guidance. Are there BIOS issues that would affect this? Any suggestions would be appreciated.Problem solved. It required elevated permissions and then using the command prompt TYPING the command : netsh i i r r
And then the command Netsh winsock reset
Basically blowing up networking and re-installing it from scratch.

Solve : mapping a drive in virtualbox (please read)?

Answer»

hay there.
this is my first thread here.
i want to map a network drive on virtualbox but i cant seem to do it because the drive dosent appear-only where i am mapping it.
i know how to map a drive.
but i want to do so to learn.
i have two MACHINES, THAY have ping to each other.
what should i do.
plus only the folder "users" can be mapped...all the other folders cant...why?
please help me...
**i have seen all the videos on youtube
here is a picture:
Have you gone into the security PREFERENCES and allowed for the other computer physical or virtual given allowance to the data to be shared?

If you want to make this easily mapped, allowing "everyone" access to a folder share is used, however its best to be SPECIFIC to allowing only a certain user or computer to have allowance.

One other test would be with this system off the web, disable the firewalls and see if you can then establish a mapping to the share. If you can not with the firewalls both disabled, then you may have a problem with network config between them such as they do not have the same domain ( workgroup ). Its also best to use static IP addresses when using mappings as for using DHCP, the IP's can change and break it.

When creating mappings, I like to use \\192.168.1.102\sharedfolder$

In which if the IP address is 192.168.1.102 and the share is sharedfolder , I add a $ at the end of this share to hide the share. But while its hidden, it can be revealed pretty easily.

Other option is mappings to use \\systemname\sharedfolder$

So if the computer with the data share is called BobsComputer it would be like \\BobsComputer\sharedfolder$Have you gone into the security preferences and allowed for the other computer physical or virtual given allowance to the data to be shared?

how do i do this?  i am mentioning again that i dont want to "share" a folder but to MAP a drive (or folder) between two virtual machines as if they were real...

i have a new picture that might help-
when i am going to the GUI ti try it i am not reciving an option for the computer but only to the shared folders in the "virtual network"

Mapping a network drive maps a network share from another system on the network. On that system, the folder is considered to be shared.
ok so thats what i want mapping a drive between two systems

Solve : slow dialup speed?

Answer»

My dialup connection speed varies all over the place from a low of about 7 Kbps to a high of about 16. It used to be consistent at 26 or 28. I have a USRobotics 56K modem board. My ISP (LocalNet) SAYS everything is ok with them. I have a phone line splitter that I bypassed, I replaced the phone line cord and I had my phone company check their line for noise. None helped. Is there something I'm overlooking or is the phone company simply not finding a noise problem?Using Dial-Up you can expect 56000 bps only under ideal conditions. If you can get a consistent 33000 bps , you are doing g well.
Depending on where you live, other services may be available. Of c purse, these cost more that Dial-Up. DSL is more than ten times faster.

You might consider adding a second phone line just for Internet and using it fort DSL. Some telephone companies  will offer DSL only line for about the same cost as having a second voice line. For example, in parts of California the local phone people
charge about $25 a month for standard voice line. Plus long distance fees  But a DSL only line is about $30 a month.

If you believe your phone company is not giving you good service, you can file a complaint. But before you do that, it may help to personally talk to SOMEBODY like a technician or service agent. I mean talk in person, face to face. That can have m ORE positive impact that a phone call.

FYI; DSL lines have higher standards the just voice lines. The DSL line has fewer splices and drop wires and other things that compromise high frequency data. *censored* DSL has to be closer  to a distribution point, often less that 4500 feet. For that reason DSL is not available is rural areas as a general rule.

Another alternative is the use of the 3G cell network for data. It is expensive.  What more people are doing, in some PLACES, is to get a good cell service that allows a loots of  data usage on the 3G or 4G network. The ce3ll towers have mich further range than DSL, so potentially the cell network can under price DSL.

Next, here is an article that contradicts what I just said:
http://www.theverge.com/2011/11/23/2578711/verizon-lte-explained
But notice it is now three years old.

EDIT: For XP you want to have it up to date and virus scans working.
I have an update for those interested. I listened to my line carefully and I did have static that came and went (a buzz really). Phone company detected a problem and fixed it. LAST session speed was 24Kbps-beats 7 by a lot. Thanks for info. Great site!

Solve : Segregated Networks over One Internet Connection?

Answer»

I'm trying to learn how to have two completely segregated networks USING one Internet connection.

I have two routers, both of which are also DSL transceivers. However, neither has guest networking, and the firewall each provides doesn't allow me to filter LAN-to-LAN traffic and thus create two segregated networks. So I'm trying to use both routers at once to accomplish the task.

It's important that no machine connected to either ROUTER can communicate with a machine on the other.

This is what I've managed to gather so far:

Router 1 --> Router 2 --> Internet
Router 1 is configured to be a bridge
Router 1 is configured with a static WAN address, that address being part of Router 2's LAN subnet
Router 1 is configured to have an ethernet port act as a WAN(uplink) port (My routers don't have dedicated uplink PORTS)
Router 1's WAN(uplink) port is connected to a LAN ethernet port on Router 2
Router 1 and Router 2 are configured to use different SUBNETS when providing IP addresses for connected machines

Is this going in the right direction? Are the networks completely segregated at this point?

Also, both routers have the ability to specify a single ethernet port for VLAN use. However, I'm not sure if/how that comes into play.

Thank you for any help on the matter. If your routers support the feature, look into configuring VLAN for your network.

This will complete the requirement of the two sets of machines not being able to talk to each other, as well as allowing you to set a default gateway in the routers to provide Internet access to both VLANs

Are you using Cisco hardware?

EDIT: Also yes, if the two LANs are configured on separate subnets then they are segregated already, however if your routers are configured with a routing protocol that has network advertising enabled then the routing table will automatically populate and the two networks will be routed to each other.

Solve : Remote network connection to Vista notebook?

Answer»

Hi,
I can neither access shared folders nor log in to remote network connection of a Vista notebook. What's the reason? In both cases log in window pops up, but  after I type in correct login and pass, it complains over >incorrect login or pass...<.
Steps take are:
Both computers have password enabled accounts set up.
System Properties/Remote/Remote Desktop/Allow connection from... is enabled.
In user name box, besides using the admin account name, I also tried comp name\user name pattern.
Nothing else comes to my head now.
Please help. Are both computers Vista or is one a different OS such as 7?

I have had issues before with RDP between different OS's and had to update RDP. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/969084Thanks DaveLembke,
However it looks like this is not the case. I'm trying to connect to Vista from 7 and the article says "However, the new features that are mentioned in this article are available only when the client connects to a remote computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.".

RegardsAre these systems far appart or in same building etc?

If its local LAN, I'd try disabling the firewall of the system that is resisting the remote connection to see if that works. If that works then you know you are dealing with having to add an firewall exception. If it doesnt work then its something else.

If its a site to site RDP connection, if these sites are within driving distance, bring these 2 systems together on a local LAN and see if you can connect to each one via RDP. If you can then you can move forward with checking router port forwarding configurations etc, if it doesnt solve the problem, try shutting off firewall and seeing if that resolves issue. If it does resolve issue then you need a firewall exception, otherwise if it doesnt its something different.

I assume that both are on the same workgroup or joined to same domain, and the RDP has been properly configured on each system that is accepting RDP requests? It's local LAN. The one with 7 is cable connection, the one with Vista (a laptop) is wireless, but still within the same network. Vista can RD connect to 7, 7 can't to Vista. Checked firewall, useless. I'm actually running Kaspersky there (which has it's firewall too), and I turned it off too. I knew it's not going to help, just wanted to do what you say. Usually when it's firewall affected you don't get to the login/pass authorization stage.
Thankshttp://superuser.com/questions/317565/remote-desktop-from-vista-to-windows-7-steps-to-try

Maybe this will helpWhen you say the logon box appears, is the actual RDP session window APPEARING and you see the logon SCREEN from the Vista machine, or is it before the session is completely OPENED?

If it is the second one, try unticking the "Allow me to save credentials" box which should bring you to the logon screen of the computer itself and takes away the guess work of the username you need to use.

Personally I prefer using Teamviewer which is free for personal use, and in the options untick ignore local connections and it will use the local network instead of the Internet to give you a DECENT experience. If set up correctly it will also allow you to access the machines EASILY from anywhere in the world with an internet connection.

The computer symbol by system notification tray means its a wired connection. Can you remove wired and then connect manually from wireless home SSID and see if it connects without errors? No, I can't connect at all. With the old router, I was able to roam around my house with no connection problems and connect to my printer as needed. This router is giving me headaches....Thanks, I need this thing to work, I have legal documents to access and print.
Did you try disabling security settings first? Can you post the ipconfig/all output?

Solve : Internet on laptop fine but on desktop terrible?

Answer»

The internet on my desktop is terrible at the moment. Some days it will work well weirdly but most of the time pages are timing out or take 60 seconds to load. The connection all so seems to come and go. On my laptop though the internet is fine using the come connection.

I am using WIFI on both.

I can't EVEN get speedtest.net to load on my desktop so can't tell you the speed it is getting. On my laptop though it is reading 2.48mb/down and 0.78mb/up.

I have tried the usual things, restarting my desktop, restarting the router, unplugging things and putting them BACK together.

Under device manager network adapters I see two listed.

ASUSTek Wireless LAN Card
Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller

Not sure which my desktop is ACTUALLY using.

Can anyone help DIAGNOSE the problem / recommend how to fix my connection issues on my desktop?

Thanks

Solve : High data usage even when not using IE?

Answer»

Can anybody assist
Last year I purchased a new desktop computer and immediately my data usage went through the roof. I used 2GB within two days. I was eventually told to remove the automatic updates for IE & Windows and that see if that cures the problem. It did reduce my data usage somewhat but I still have a problem in that sometimes (not on every occasion) when I go out of IE there is still a large volume of data being down loaded (Since the initial problem I have installed Netmeter).
The computer has been back to the suppliers a couple of times and they cannot find any problem and I have also had a technician from the local computer shop around to see if he can solve the problem - but unfortunately not.
So I have gone from  a monthly usage of less than 2Gb (last year) to getting on for 5Gb + recently without any change in my surfing habits.

Some one please help its costing me a fortune in additional Data bundles.

TIA
BobHFirst of all, this is not a quick and easy solution. One method would be to get into your firewall and have a block all APPLICATIONS, except Internet explorer. Of course, that means you will not get any updates or e-mail until you change the setting in the firewall back to normal.
Another approach, rather drastic, is to simply disconnect your modem from the telephone line until you're ready to use it.
Also, you did not specify how you are monitoring your network usage. Are you using a tool such as provided by Microsoft?
http://www.sysprobs.com/monitor-network-traffic-windows-7-microsoft-network-monitor-34
You may find you have some unwanted programs RUNNING in the background and getting up some of your bandwidth. It is quite likely some of these programs are completely unwanted and unneeded programs that may be using your computer for something you did not intend. In other words, some kind of spyware or malware that is abusing your computer.
Do you regularly make virus scans with tools such as the MalwareBytes free scanner?
Thanks for the reply - The usage monitor that I use is "Netmeter" which gives a real time usage indication. I have been using this since I first had the high data usage problems.
I have AVG installed on my computer and it says that it is up to date !! so hopefully the problem is not virus related.
As to the disconnection of the line, I do that especially when I go out of IE and the Netmeter still shows heavy usage. As a further precaution I do switch off the modem overnight and if there is a likelihood of an electrical storm I also disconnect the line.
Is there anyway of determining the URL that the data is coming from?

Thanks

BobHYou might try another tool instead of Netmeter.

Other Network Monitors.

An AV program by itself does not catch everything bad out there. You may have  to experiment with three of four different kinds of AV tools to find one that stops unwanted traffic.

Below are details of the different traffic that has been seen and what the GPO does to limit it.

Solve : I have network security key, asking for password. How do I connect.?

Answer»

I am trying to connect to a wireless network with a MAC book.  The network has WPA2 PROTECTION.  I have the network security key. When I try to log on it ask for the password.  I don't have.   Can I GET the password or is there a way I can log on with the keyHave you tried using the "key" as the password.  The names "key" and "password" are often USED interchangeably.Do you also mean of having 2 password keys or security keys? What do you mean log on? The network security key you refer COULD also be your password.

Solve : How frequent to make penetration testing??

Answer»

In a small company what do u recomment? Just to test once a year or just when new  network is first made? Some certifications lay out specific requirements for pentesting. Many certifications say test annually. It would be wise to conduct penetration tests when: new network infrastructure or applications are added; significant upgrades or MODIFICATIONS are APPLIED to infrastructure or applications; new office locations are established; security patches are applied; end user policies are modified. One thing to KEEP in mind if you USE AWS or other cloud service, you PROBABLY need to get approval first and make sure that you don't violate your TOS by conducting penetration testing out of the blue.

I was on a laptop a few minutes again when it acted like the internet went out. Then said no connections(I looked at a tablet and it had CONNECTION to the router).I also turned on a desktop and was able to get right online. I just shut down the laptop and restarted. Has connection. Is there anything I can check next time to make sure before having to restart ? and I check the WIFI key three times .Windows 7 laptopWhat is make/model of laptop? Some have been known to have wifi problems such as some Acers which had a similar issue which was related to a junk wifi.gateway NV57H50u
Also before it went to no connections I could see the other wifi connections in the areaI have the same problem from time to time.  I never know when it's going to happen. your LUCKY your comes back after restart. I have an acer (piece of WORK) You just have to keep restarting in my opinion.  I've gone though the drivers and jumped all the hurdles to fix it but it keeps coming back.    From Microsoft. Did you check the power settings in the control panel.
You have to go to the power plan settings.
and then go to the advanced powerplan settings
There you have to click + in wireless adapter settings.
and in there you have to check in power saving mode.
set it to maximum performance and you are good to go.

hope this helps

Solve : Local Area Connection - unidentified network?

Answer»

Hi Guys and Gals,

So i have a problem trying to connect my PC Via Ethernet.

wireless can connect but i'm wanting wired as the signal strength is poor and of cause wired is faster.
ive never had wired connection on my PC and the problem has only just came about after moving home... i digress;

so in network sharing its is showing my wired connection as unidentified public network -
IPv4 Connectivity - no network access
IPv6 Connectivity - no network access

Now i have tried the following:

 - resetting router (i have fibre so reset both)
 - reset pc
 - uninstalled, reinstalled and udated drivers for Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx Gigabit Controller
 -  turned off firewall
 - turned of anti virus/anti spyware
 - manually assigned IP
 - AUTOMATICALLY assigned IP
 - installed protocol on IPv 4 and IPv 6.
 - deleted network from my computer and reconnected.
 - changed my security settings to low/disabled then reset them back after no change.

Any help with this would be great as i said i have a connection via wifi so im not gonna hang my self just yet but would really like some insight into the problem.

Thanks

Their shouldn't be any problem if all H/Ws are in good condition.

Try this :
1. Check your Ethernet device is enabled and working fine
2. Wire is not broken somewhere (mostly near the RJ-45 connecting pin)

After this check these setting from Control Panel :
Network and Internet -> Network and Sharing (here you should be able to see any possible solutions) -> Change Advance Sharing (check and modify all the necessary from here)

And you may also want to check this :
Network and Internet -> Network and Sharing -> Change Adapter Setting
Right click on your Ethernet connection -> Properties
And check those TCP/IPv4 and TCP/IPv6 (i have faced some connection problems when i was trying to Install/Uninstall those IP versions).

Hope this will help
Thanks for getting back to me.

I agree i should have no problem connecting at all this is the first time i came across this problem not been able to solve using what i have already done (usually wireless)
YEAH sorry there is no damage also tried a different ethernet cable as before i was using a cheap E45 cable i got from CHINA or some where just because i needed 50m worth. so i went to maplins today and got a gold plated one THATS 3meters and that still is having the same issue.

As suggested i checked over and installed the ipv4/6 and still no luck,
changed my advanced sharing settings,
and even changed my home group as its a work version of windows i changed it to home.

still nothing.

Any other advice would be great but its looking like im stuck, though i am changing IP and getting a new hub so see what happens then i guess.

Thanks again

Solve : Two Networks?

Answer»

Dear, im using Windows 7 and facing a problem that when i log on to my WIN then there is 2 networks shoing, then when i disable the 2nd one and after that i do repair through troubleshooter so then i am able to connect to the internet.
what is the solution of this . to remove useless connection .Name: Unidentified NetworK i want to remove this network type for always

[RECOVERING disk space, attachment deleted by admin]If you disable the adapter that is this 2nd connection it should no longer be a problem.

***The biggest problem for losing internet would be if both connections had a gateway configuration. If the 2nd was not used and set up as a static IP for say 130.0.0.1 and subnet of 255.255.255.0 and gateway is left blank, all outbound communications would have to go through the single gateway at the primary NIC and the problem is solved.

However you should be able to simply disable the 2nd network adapter and then force the system to communicate through the primary adapter.

To disable go to Control PANEL, then select Network & Sharing Center, then select change adapter settings, then select the NIC that you want to disable and right-click and select to disable it from the drop down.

You then will want to refresh your network info. To do this pull up command prompt and type ipconfig/release and then after that brings you back to the prompt enter ipconfig/renew and when brought back to the prompt you should be able to PING www.google.com and get a healthy response if the internet is available.

** Also on a rare occasion you may need to flush out the DNS info, to do this from the command prompt enter ipconfig/flushdns and wait for it to complete and then try to ping google again at PING www.google.com

If you dont want to go through the command prompt instructions above you can simply reboot the computer and it will detect the network info on the fly on start up of Windows and get a IP lease from DHCP from router etc, and you should have internet if internet is available.

Solve : 10 good proxy servers?

Answer»

Can someone LIST about 10 good proxy SERVERS with encrypted URLS for browsing the web. Because often I try to use proxy servers but they end up "breaking" the web page. As in often buttons don't work or certain parts of the page don't LOAD even if I uncheck "Remove SCRIPTS" and "Remove media" certain pages still don't load properly. This subject is one that could be used with wrong intent as well as in some countries may be against their law depending on what level of ENCRYPTION is used.

I have heard of some people encrypting through squid, but thats all I can share.

Solve : ethernet data transfer between two pc speed dropped very much in windows 8?

Answer»

I am doing data transfer between two computers running win 8 USING a lan cable.
but the data transfer speed was high (11mbps) but recently after installing a new os in a LAPTOP the speed
decreased  (2mbps)

what can be done to make it faster like beforeYou have to disable wifi and bluetooth. Then the speed increases again. The wireless features uses more of the resourses of the computer.

And for additional settings.
1.you can disable the remote decompressional API support.
2.set netsh TCP settings in global to enabled
3.disable large SEND OFFLOAD in driver settings of network adapters in device manager.
4. and select 128 bit encryption in advanced settings in network and sharing center.
If you can get a gigabit ethernet cable.

Hope this helps. If you can get a gigabit ethernet cable.

Solve : Router keeps resetting itself?

Answer»

Having recently gotten reconnected to my own service, I opted to use the same Cable Modem and Router I was using previously with the same Provider. The Modem is a Motorola Surfboard SB5102, and the router is a D-Link DIR-655.

One PROBLEM I have had is that, infrequently (maybe every few hours) the router, by all indications, is resetting itself. At first I suspected the cable modem, but then I noticed that I also lost the ability to access the router (ping or http setup pages) when I lost the connection, additionally, I connected the cable modem directly to my PC and did not have any problems either.

I feel I've isolated the router as the cause of the problem. Note that this router, when I last used it a good year or more ago, worked perfectly fine in conjunction with the same Modem, and to my knowledge has not had any extensive bumps or bangs in the meantime. However, it was outside when I tried to sell it at a garage sale (which it thankfully never got sold at).

I figured that the router might be resetting because it is overheating. The router- like most- usually got fairly hot, but it was all I had to go on, so I took off the case and let it sit free of it's insulating cover. However it doesn't seem that has solved the problem.

My only other idea is to continue running with the idea that it is overheating and see if I can find my tube of Arctic Silver and try re-applying the two Passive heatsinks inside the device, but it might still be in the box of stuff I have in storage.

I do have a WBR-1310 to use as a backup, but I'd much rather use the DIR-655 if I can. Additionally I wasn't able to get any wired connections to work through the WBR-1310, so that will probably just be switching out one set of problems for another.

Anybody else have any other ideas?Additional: I took the problem router apart completely. It appears to have some mild corrosion on the other side, which I attempted to swab off with some Nail Polish Remover. Not really sure if that was the best material to use, but I have nothing to lose, as it works now the router is a gigantic pain. In the meantime I'm using the WBR-1310, and I managed to get the wired connection working, Though I imagine the little fella has seen better days.

I'll give the DIR-655 another go after a day or so of air-drying, and hopefully in the meantime this one doesn't give me any problems, since it looks like it's my new go-to router, which should work fine, but would be a shame to have to junk the more expensive one.Odd that corrosion would happen like that. There are some corrosive fluxes out there, but I haven't seen them used in years. A toothbrush you don't plan on using ever again and rubbing alcohol usually does the trick to remove corrosion as well as flux on PCBs. You can bathe the board in rubbing alcohol and it wont hurt it in a non powered state. Just air it out dry and it should do it if the corrosion was the cause.

Also to mention that I had a client once with an issue similar and it was that they had dips in their power, and the dips caused resets on some hardware while leaving other hardware ( not as sensitive ) alone. Solution was to power all their hardware thru a UPS which kicks in fast enough to cancel out the dip by use of its battery. Now everything is running fine and they just hear some clicks from the UPS throughout the day when its keeping their power as a constant doing its job. The most evident corrosion, or at least some odd unnatural colouring, appears on these copper-coloured "pads" that are near each CORNER. That and a few other spots here and there, I cleaned up a bit.

I think the big issue was that I tried to sell it at friend who was having a garage sale, so I gave it to them along with some other stuff. When I went there a few day's later I found it covered in pine needles and sitting out in the open, so I decided I would NOT leave it there or sell it since they obviously have no idea how to care for electronics. (That and the fact that they tried to give it away for free while I was there, along with some of my other stuff).

This might have some truth, though not where I am now. For a while I was at a place with terrible wiring- my surge protector's "Building Wiring Fault" was on the entire  time. I had the router plugged directly into the wall there, so it may be possible that incorrect voltages might have had a negative effect in it's innards. (or, on the AC adapter). Following that logic I might try to find another AC adapter that is compatible and see if that helps.

I'm not eliminating the possibility that the electrical here is uneven or otherwise unstable, though, I just don't have a way to test that. Also, this other router hasn't had an issue.

I think it's either the fact that it was left outside, being connected to a faulty mains, or some combination of the two that have made it a tricky customer. I'll probably try to power up the DIR-655 this afternoon and see if it works better.I've got the SB-5120 & DIR-632 (w/ DD-WRT firmware).
Nail polish remover is acetone which will dissolve most plastics.
Your description sounds like water damage.

I was first thinking you could try reflashing the DIR-655 with DD-WRT, but the Ubicom chipset is incompatible.  Many D-Link models are KNOWN to be troublesome, I'm on my 3rd DIR-632 (now out of 1 year warranty).  The SharePort software was awful.  With DD-WRT, the USB port is controlled/activated via the router firmware.  I use it as a NAS device with a USB drive attached.  The factory firmware would just turn off the WiFi transceiver at random times.

I don't know much about the DIR-655, other than D-Link firmware is pretty bad on many models.  Wouldn't be surprised if the resetting was not uncommon for this model.

Hope it comes out of it for you and behaves. I lost a bunch of older computer hardware when i decided to STORE it out in my shed. Thought just being out of the weather as good enough, but when i inspected the box of cards, boards, drives,... etc, I saw that there were white and green fuzzy crystals growing off the surface of the lead & copper etc. Learned my lesson to keep it indoors away from humidity.  Hello: I have a D-Link 615 T1 Flashed with the latest DD-WRT software as of July 2014 ( I believe the latest is 2013 version).  I was having this happening constantly. The router was REBOOTING at least every hour....   I purchased a low end APC  UPS   $89.95   and the issues has not re occurred as of yet.  Dirty power it seems ....   am hopeful the issue is resolved.Hi

Are you sure that you have the dlink power pack, not one from another piece of equipment. Also those plug packs were a problem from some models  so the plug pack maybe failing.
I haven't been using that router for well over a year and a half now.Sorry due to TechTug posting  a reply it showed up as an unread post. I failed to notice the 2012 year from the original post. Wonder why after all this time someone hasn't closed it.

Solve : My computer is terrible with the internet?

Answer»

Can someone please explain to me why my less than 1 year old computer (top) is so much worse at anything related to the internet compared to my 7 year old mac? It is a dell inspiron 3000 series. It is supposed to be better in every way in relation to processor SPEED and ram. I don't have any nonessential programs running on either computer.

This also shows up whenever I try to play an online game. It works fine on the mac, but on the dell, my ping just skyrockets from 40 to 5000 every minute, invariably.
Please help. I am extremely fed up with this. Last time I tried to get help, nobody bothered to answer.

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by ADMIN]this is the beginning of my dictation.
Your frustration is understandable. However, processor speed has little to do with Internet performance, even with intense online games. Modern computers have processing SPEEDS that are more than 100 times faster than what is needed for playing a game over the Internet.
The fact that you have ANOTHER computer with a different operating system that works very well would suggest that something has happened to your computer that you are not aware of. The most likely scenario is some kind of infection with spyware, adware or maybe a virus.
Nevertheless, it is very important you contact the manufacturer of your new computer and register a complaint with them. They might know a some issue they had with that particular model.
The only thing I can suggest at this point is a couple of things.
First, create a new user account and sign into that account and try logging into the Internet again.
Second, run the network wizard again in Windows and see if that helps. You have to reset your computer before the changes take place.
That's the best I can offer. Hopefully somebody else has an idea.
Hi

You don't say if you are using wireless or a cables to connect the 2 computers to the modem?

If the Dell is wireless can you try it please with a cable instead. And let use know the results.

Thank you

Solve : Router won't let me login?

When I put in my default gateway address to get to my router, the username field is disabled and yet when I put in a PASSWORD and try to login, the page asks me to put in a username. Is there any way to fix/get around this? I'm trying to forward a port on my Dlink DIR-605L. The past HOUR or so has all been a big ORDEAL. All I want is to host a Half-Life 2 Deathmatch server! Is that too much to ask?!Look up  DOCUMENTATION. for DIR-605L.
If you forgot the password, you have to do a physical reset of the router and install it all over again.

Solve : Connecting PS3 to hosted network is failing..?

Answer»

I don't THINK the specs for my computer mean a lot in this thread. I can tell you that the hosted network via Command Prompt I created does work properly (am USING the Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter drives) and I can indeed CONNECT both my iPad and my LG L3 to this network. However, I've been failing in the long run with trying to access this network with my PS3. The following message appears when I try to run the connection:

"A connection to the access point could not be established. Check the security settings for the wireless LAN."

This is odd because I can connect the PS3 to the router's signal (although at 45%, tops) and I'm doing this to improve the online experience I have on my PS3 by having a stronger signal. (My PS3 captures the signal "MyWifi" (the network I created) at 100% at all times.) Now, I know what this means and I've been trying to figure out what is wrong about the security settings and I just can't find anything that WOULD PREVENT the PS3 from connecting to my laptop and recovering the IP adress... Please, I ask for your help in taking care of this accessibility problem and I thank you in advance.

P.S.: I've also tried to shut off the firewall and it still would show me the same message when I tried to connect the PS3 to the laptop.Have you tried creating a new hostednetwork - SSID and password to connect?

Solve : Can't ping new Ubuntu 13.04 install except...?

Answer»

I've got a weird problem here, my new Ubuntu install can access the internet, ping other computers on the wireless LAN, ping servers outside the network (ie: google.com), and ssh into itself using its network ip (10.0.0.119 and also 127.0.0.1). The problem is that no other DEVICES on the network can see, ping, or ssh into Ubuntu unless I ping the other computer first from Ubuntu. After I ping the second or third computer from Ubuntu, I have maybe 60 seconds to initiate some sort of network traffic from the second computer to Ubuntu, or else it disappears again. If I ssh into Ubuntu during that time, I'll remain connected until I choose to disconnect, but then a minute or so later, I can't talk to Ubuntu at all. Even weirder, if I have Computer A pinging Ubuntu indefinitely, and Computer B pinging Ubuntu indefinitely, at first neither one will get any response. If I ping Computer A from Ubuntu, then Computer A will instantly start getting a response, but Computer B will not get anything. Visa versa works too, pinging Computer B from Ubuntu results in Computer B seeing Ubuntu, but Computer A still doesn't.

I've got Ubuntu set up with DHCP, but the router has a reservation for 10.0.0.119 set up for Ubuntu's MAC address. Also, ifconfig says that Ubuntu's IP is 10.0.0.119 throughout all my experiments, so I know I'm still pinging the right IP.

Running nmap on Ubuntu , it can see any device on the network. I don't have ANOTHER Linux machine to test to see if any other computer can see Ubuntu with nmap, but running Fing (a network mapper similar to nmap) on my Android tablet finds all the other devices, except Ubuntu.

I'd really like to know what's making it so that Ubuntu has to initiate communication with another computer before that computer and only that computer can talk to it at all.Hi there,

Are all the computers on the network running the same Operating system?  On the Ubuntu in question have you checked your firewall settings?

The reason they can't ping the Ubuntu (until Ubuntu pings first) is because there is no entry in the arp table for the Ubuntu machine on the hosts that you are pinging from.

When you do a ping from a host to that Ubuntu machine the host will first send out an arp request as it has no entry for the destination ip in its table.  For some reason the request is not getting through.  Once you ping from the Ubuntu machine to your host it then ADDS an entry to the arp table.

Continual pinging (from multiple machines) will result in flooding the tcp/ip service with incoming packets and I think that could be classed as a DOS attack.  I wouldn't worry just now though as no packets seem to get through until you ping from the Ubuntu machine.

Anyway if you try checking the settings on the firewall you are using on the Ubuntu machines first.

Also open up a terminal to check icmp settings.

type in = "sysctl net.ipv4.icmp_echo_ignore_all"

This will allow you to check the settings.  If it comes up = 0 this is fine and it is set to ping out as well as to receive.  If it comes up =1 then this is set to ping out but not to receive pings.

To amend it to zero type in = "sysctl -w net.ipv4.icmp_echo_ignore_all=0"

HOPE this helps somewhat.

B2 Hi again,

Just to say the "-w" switch in the syntax is just to allow you to change the parameters.  You can always type in at the terminal "man sysctl" which will bring up the manual with additional information.

I've got 2 computers running Ubuntu (both with the problem) and a computer running Windows 8 with Ubuntu running in Virtualbox (set up the same as the others, but it doesn't have this problem). When installing Ubuntu, I never set up any firewall, and can't find any firewall on them either. I ran Code: [Select]sysctl net.ipv4.icmp_echo_ignore_all but it came back with 0. Also when I do ping Ubuntu from any OS, I get back a response of Code: [Select]Reply from 10.0.0.10: Destination host unreachable. which means the ping did get through to Ubuntu, and Ubuntu did respond to it, but Ubuntu sent back saying that it was unreachable when it really isn't unreachable.Hi there,

Which one is the new install?  Is it the virtual one.  Can you set them up with a static ip each instead of dhcp.  If the new install is the virtual one check the settings for the virtual machine and make sure that the settings for the "Network Adapter" is set to NAT.  NAT is the shared network settings.

If you could you try this please and let me know how you get on.  Also is it a router you are connecting them with or a hub?

B2 Hi again,

I meant to say that the "Reply from 10.0.0.10: Destination host unreachable." message you are getting implies that the network segments are fine in the communications chain to the final router interface that should have your destination host machine and that it has made an arp request.  It means that the host is isn't there.

Here is a link to have a read through.

B2 I am connected to a Linksys E4200 router. All 3 Ubuntu installs were INSTALLED about the same time. I changed my wife's netbook from Windows 8 to Ubuntu 13.04 because the netbook just wasn't strong enough to handle Windows 8, but it runs Ubuntu great. All of the computers can access the internet fine and can talk to the router, I just can't ping or ssh into the Ubuntu netbook and laptop unless I ping my computer first. Both the laptop and netbook that are having this problem haven't been changed or customized or anything, they still have all the stock settings. I know Ubuntu can talk to the router and internet, my computer can talk to the router and internet, and Ubuntu can also talk to my computer, so what would be preventing my computer from talking to Ubuntu?Hey,

How's things.  Sorry I've not been able to get back to you sooner.

At present I only have at my disposal a laptop and a Smartphone.  I've used a networking tool on the phone as a host on the network.  I can ping out and receive replies from the likes of Google servers and others.  However, when I ping the laptop there is no reply back to the phone as the connection failed; and the same for pinging the phone from the laptop.

So, the only other thing I can suggest is to get the IP address of your router and pop it in your browser.  When you get to the page for the router log in and check what network settings it has.

Had a similar problem on my linux box as OP, very weird. It was like the other devices on the network couldn't see mine even though everything was plugged right.

The "sysctl n..... did the trick for me. That and a little googling.

Thanks! +repped

Hi there,

Are all the computers on the network running the same Operating system?  On the Ubuntu in question have you checked your firewall settings?

The reason they can't ping the Ubuntu (until Ubuntu pings first) is because there is no entry in the arp table for the Ubuntu machine on the hosts that you are pinging from.

When you do a ping from a host to that Ubuntu machine the host will first send out an arp request as it has no entry for the destination ip in its table.  For some reason the request is not getting through.  Once you ping from the Ubuntu machine to your deviated host it then adds an entry to the arp table.

Continual pinging (from multiple machines) will result in flooding the tcp/ip service with incoming packets and I think that could be classed as a DOS attack.  I wouldn't worry just now though as no packets seem to get through until you ping from the Ubuntu machine.
