Solve : Computer freezes within 5 minutes on startup, mouse freezes on restart?

Answer»

This problem has been persisting for a few weeks. I did a fresh re-install of windows 8 (genuine) and it is still happening so I thought I would ask for help. When I first turn my desktop on everyday within 5 minutes of starting up it freezes, no mouse or keyboard response (sometimes before I even have a chance to login). I have tried unplugging and plugging them back in to no avail. If there is anything animated (like a game) on my screen at the time of the freeze it will also be frozen. I have also tried WAITING to see if it will unfreeze, even after 1 hour there is no change. Fans are still spinning and all lights (in tower and on headset/keyboard/mouse) are operational.

So after the initial freeze I restart the computer and every single time within 5 minutes of starting up again the mouse will freeze. But only the mouse (keyboard and programs on screen are still operational). This is easily fixed by unplugging it and plugging it back in. Then the computer is good to go for the rest of the day. At first I thought it was a problem with my mouse (Steel Series Sensei Raw) so I swapped it out (Logitech G600) and uninstall the Steel Series software with Revo uninstaller, but even after that the problem persists, and that was before I did a fresh re-install of Win8.

Enabled Startup programs:
Avast Antivirus
Nvidia Backend
Nvdidia Capture Server Proxy
Realtek HD Audio Manager
usbmonitor

I have attached my Dxdiag file as well. Thank you in advance

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]Did you remember to re-install ALL proper Win8 drivers after the clean install ? ?

Neither of those NVidia apps need to be in the stsrtup group BTW though thats likely not the issue...Also what is usbMonitor and why do you use it ? ?There are a few optional updates that I am running right now just in case, but the problem existed before I re-installed the OS when my computer was all up to date. To be honest I have no idea what the usbmonitor is

Just ran on check on it online and found this information:
Quote

The process known as usbmonitor or TODO: File description belongs to software usbmonitor or TODO: Product name by VIA Technologies (www.via.com.tw) or TODO: Company name.

Description: Usb3Monitor.exe is not essential for the Windows OS and causes relatively few problems. Usb3Monitor.exe is located in a subfolder of C:\ or sometimes in a subfolder of "C:\Program Files". The file size on Windows 8/7/XP is 331,776 bytes. http://www.file.net/process/usb3monitor.exe.html
The program has no visible window. It is not a Windows system file. It can change the BEHAVIOR of other programs or manipulate other programs. Usb3Monitor.exe is able to record keyboard and mouse inputs. Therefore the technical security rating is 61% dangerous.

So I am going to remove it with Revo. I don't think it could be the cause of my problems though.. do you? Yes...As far as I can tell the VIA drivers go with the chipset in my motherboard. The program itself is called VIA XHCI Host Controller Driver and has something to do with USB 3.0...usbmonitor is not a VIA process from what i have searched...is it listed as a Program in Start Menu /
The publisher was VIA Technologies in start-up and it was located in the Program Files 'VIA XHCI UASP Utility' folder, along with a Configurations Settings (.ini) file that says the following:

Quote
This device can perform faster=This device can perform faster
This USB MASS Storage device can transfer infomation faster if you connect it to a Super-Speed USB 3.0 Port=This USB Mass Storage device can transfer infomation faster if you connect it to a Super-Speed USB 3.0 Port

Along with a list of languages So I dug a little deeper into my VIA file in the x86 Program files and found a text document called 'VIA SETUP' there seems to be a problem there. I have attached the file below. I tried to re-install the xHCX64 Application that was also in the file and received this error message:

Quote
Setup AP for VIA USB 3.0 controller V1.0 has stopped working

I don't know what this means but perhaps it is the problem?

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]Going to uninstall and re-install with the V4.90A drivers I found here: http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4602#driverAfter removing all of the VIA technologies software everything seems to be working!Good news indeed...nice work.

I'm able to install the proper Chipset/LAN driver and it runs just fine, windows activates etc. However, the problem occurs when I install any other update afterwards, whether it's done via Windows Update or I manually update say RealTek audio drivers. After I install the update/drivers it just boots into a blue screen. I am however able to 'restore' from the fresh install saved point. Solve : Forced Upgrade?

Answer»

What updates from MS am I looking for to delete so that I can stay with windows 8.1; which I love and not let MS sneak windows 10 into my setup ?

What numbers am I looking for to delete fast - thanks .They won't "sneak it on" - You have to explicitly say that you want the upgrade.According to posted stories they will sneak it on; wouldn t trust MS farther then I can throw them; any idea how I say NOOO loud and clear ? Solve : Battery Charge dependent on time?

Answer»

Hi good folk,

This a quite a tale.

Of all my years sitting in front of a computer never have I tought the following would happen to me. One day I returned from work looking to charge my 1 year old Toshiba laptop. After about 15 minutes of activity I notice that my remaining battery charge was dropping instead of, well charging. I hovered overed the Battery icon in the lower right corner and the message read: " Plugged in, not charging ". Being a new generation kid I immediately hopped on google to try and solve this. After reading through a dozen articles about said problem I did the following (please note that I have a sealed in battery - stupid I know): " Uninstalled the battery drivers, restarted the pc, plug out and plugged in the AC charger.

But to no avail. Immediately saddened by the fact because I knew my laptop was getting old (14 months) and the battery wasnt the best (2,5 Hours) but this problem appeared so suddenly that I couldnt help but feel a bit cheated. I went to bed early and decide to leave the charger in my laptop for the night. Surprisingly it charged as I woke in the morning and as a test I left it to charge with no activity for the entire day. But as luck would have its way it stopped charging in the afternoon.

I repeated this and noticed a pattern. Roughly between 10pm and 1pm it would charge and the other part of the day it would not. I confirmed this by changing my pc time to those periods and Voila! it would charge. To be honest I do not know if this a software or hardware problem but I need to find a fix because I plan on using this pc for another six months to eight months.

Any suggestions,
StevenShort answer: Buy a battery. Use both.
Long answer: Thanks for staring, your keen observations confirm what meany users have already found. Neely, the battery life and recharge rate are not exact calculations.
Also, the algorithm used by software for CALCULATING battery condition is flawed. It uses a table the only represents an approximation of battery charge.

Do you want to perjure this further? The technical reading is very boor. But we have some experts here that are good about making hard stuff simple. Maybe they will give it a try.

Though this can also be caused by the battery being bad or losing the ability to hold a charge, another cause can be the AC Adapter/Power brick. If it doesn't deliver ENOUGH power to the system then the battery won't be able to charge.

Doesn't make a lot of sense that it would only do that at certain times, though.

Quote

Doesn't make a lot of sense that it would only do that at certain times, though.
The OP did not mention where he lives. In some areas the line voltage might vary as much as 20% during a 24 hour period. Some chargers do not correct for voltage sag.
Also, temperature variation during the day. Some charging systems have poor temperature compensation.

And when batteries get old and near end-of-life the performance becomes erratic.

But it could be the charger.

About three years ago USA TODAY hard this story:
The sad lifespan of a laptop battery
It has not got much better.

I dont think you guys get it. Let me put it this way:

Between 1pm and 10pm it doesn't charge. Between 10:01 pm and 12:59 pm it charges. (PC TIME). So if I change my PC time to eg. 4 AM or 11 AM it will charge. If i change it back to say 2pm it won't. OK. Important detail not mentioned earlier.
That detail indicates that the charger is on a schedule. It was by design.
The life of your battery can be extended by reducing the number and frequency of charge cycles. . Some think that a trick recharge is better. Wrong. The engineers say the battery should undergo deep and less frequent charge cycles.
From Google:
Quote
I have fully drained the lithium batteries for my laptops several time without any issues. I would say you should simply re-charge the battery once it drops to 5%. Regarding "over-charging" or keeping the laptop plugged into the AC outlet all the time when the battery is at 100%... This is generally a bad thing to do.Feb 24, 2014
Quote from: Stakes on JULY 05, 2015, 08:16:46 AM
I dont think you guys get it.

Good luck with your issue. What level is it on when it says "Plugged in, not charging" - A lot of laptops do this when the battery is nearly full (e.g. 98%) instead of charging the laptop to the max. This helps prolong the lifespan of the battery. If this doesnt fix the problem then I would bring it back to the store and get a replacement under warranty/customer satisfaction. A new computer out of the box shouldnt have any problems like this.

Solve : Need help: Windows 8.1 taking hours to load.?

Answer»

So it was all okay until the afternoon, where I forgot to turn on my AVG and just merely allowed my friend to plug in his USB. His USB had a problem where there were only shortcuts so while I looked for the right attrib commands just to be sure, my computer lagged and even there is a significant delay on my opening the Start menu, so I had to restart. Solve : How to change the focus back to original window via a Batch File Command?

Answer»

Good evening, All -

I'm new to this forum, but I love the information/assistance provided. I've 'lurked' before - gleaning information - but I never had to post because I always found the solution. Now, I'm stumped on something, and thought you all might be able to assist me.

I have a very simple batch file that copies the contents of a TXT file onto the clipboard. Trust me, this is a simple file...the command is:

C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /k clip < c:\transfers\test.txt
c:\exit

test.txt contains the information that I want pasted to the clipboard (e.g. my email address).

Next, I've assigned a hotkey to the shortcut that runs that batch file. So, for example, CTRL+ALT+O would copy the text in test.txt onto the clipboard. I can then use CTRL+V to paste that pretty much anywhere.

So far, so good.

Now, let's say that I'm on a webpage, and it asks for my email address. Rather than typing it, I press CTRL+ALT+O to place it on the clipboard. Here's where I hit my issue. When the batch file runs, I lose the focus on the field that I wanted to fill in on the webform (or whatever program), so I have to click back to the field and THEN paste.

Here is my question...is there a way that I can adjust the batch file so that it will "hold" or "return to" the field where I hit the hotkey combination, so that all I need to do is hit CTRL+V (or, better yet, where it would "know" to paste right there and I could save the CTRL+V step)?

In other words, I want the focus to STAY WHERE IT WAS or to RETURN TO WHERE I HAD IT. The general concept is to SAVE keystrokes, and having to get the focus back adds some extra steps. Not the end of the world, but still, I'm trying to make the process better!

Thank you, in advance, for any insight/knowledge you may have. I've given a very simple example above, but if I can solve the focus issue, I can think of lots of places to use this simple command sequence.

Have a great night!

NOTE: The batch file above works on Windows 7 or 8 or 8.1Your objective is not clear.
There are some here that can do anything with a batch file,
- except make good coffee.
But seriously, for sometime Microsoft has recommended people to lo use some kind of Windows Script Host pt for TASKS that involve the windows graphical interface. Batch commands are butter used for things that stay at the condom line.

I'm just trying to create a simple solution (FAIRLY low-tech) to solve an issue that someone in my office raised - the ability to copy/paste some 'set text' (whatever they want, I used an email address as the example) using a hotkey combination into some field. That's all. Nothing complicated...just a tool for 'mere mortals' to use to simplify their lives (if they want).

Thank you for your thoughts.

I'm ashamed to say that I don't know what 'Windows Script Host pt' is (although I can probably find out elsewhere on this forum!)It was not my intent to turn you away from Batch files. Really, the WSH can be part of a batch file.
Here is an article about how Microsoft introduced Windows Script Host many years ago, The goal was to extend the power of batch to include some syntax from other kinds of tools.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Script_Host
Quote

...WSH engines include various implementations for the REXX, BASIC, Perl, Ruby, Tcl, PHP, JavaScript, Delphi, Python, XSLT, and other languages.
Windows Script Host is distributed and installed by default on Windows 98 and later versions of Windows. It is also installed if Internet Explorer 5 (or a later version) is installed. Beginning with Windows 2000, the Windows Script Host became available for use with user login scripts. ...
On this forum the preference seems to be using VbScript with batch to go into some things that would need more control. Such as forms.
One advantage of WSH is, let's say, somebody in you group might be more handy with Python. He could write some good code and it can be started in batch. Then the batch might chge some detail and finish the job.

Back to VBS, VBScript:

Using VBScript to Fill Out a Web Form
Is that he kind of thing you want? More examples are available. If you want the easy route for this, if the text is always in the same location on the display, I'd go with creating a Keyboard/Mouse macro with a tool like Jitbits Macro Creator. I bought this software years ago and use it for making a stand alone exe to run on other systems or same system. * To work on other systems, display resolution has to be the same and placement of trigger point ( desktop icons etc ) have to match up for exact X,Y location. A macro to complete this could be made in as little as 3 minutes. Thats why I like it so much is because OTHERWISE your spending hours writing code and debugging to get it right. This tool you can just say start recording the process. And then every movement, mouse click, and keyboard action is recorded in realtime until you select to end the recording. You can then play it back and it will perform exactly what you did. You can then either compile it into an EXE to share with other systems, or you can go in and look at the macro instruction list and edit it to change time delays to make it run faster if you want it to get to an icon and point and click to trigger it faster than your initial recorded motion of your hand to mouse etc, as well as you can add a loop instruction in it with a counter if you want to get advanced and customize it to run X-many times, or infinite loop to run non stop until an abort key is entered ending the macro.

This program was some of the best spent money of programs I have readily available to me: https://www.jitbit.com/macro-recorder/Thank you Geek After Dark! I'll check out the links/info. We don't have an internal IT department...I'm as close as it gets, and I'm just not afraid to try things...but I am NOT a programmer. I AM a good 'monkey'...meaning I can take/adjust existing things to suit our needs . Not necessarily the 'cleanest' or 'prettiest', but usually (with luck) functional. So, I try to go with fairly 'low tech' solutions, so others can copy/adjust as needed without much tech knowledge. In other words, if I can document with images/text, then perhaps someone else can do it, as well. I appreciate your ideas!Thank you, Dave Lembke. The location of the text is NOT always in the same spot on the screen, so I don't think that this will work for this situation, but it is DEFINITELY an interesting little piece of software and one that I will ABSOLUTELY check out (but for other challenges). I LOVE the idea of quickly scripting keystrokes and have needed this tool often, so I'm sure that I'll need it again! I'm still trying to solve THIS issue, but now I know that I have a solution for some other issues! As DaveLembke said , a macro keystroke recorder might help in some cases.
Some other things for future reference.
There are a number of ways surrogate programs will imitate the typing of a real person. This is useful of applications that only take input from the keyboard.
For more on this idea see:
Auto Hotkey,
Keyboard shortcut,
Macro,
Modifier key,
Shortcut key.
Or look here:

10 AutoHotkey Alternatives To Create Your Own Macros and ...

And there is more... but this is enough for now. would it not work to have the launched command prompt start minimized?

start "" /MIN "cmd.exe /c clip < c:\transfers\test.txt"

I also don't think the /k switch makes sense for your usage- I swapped it for /c here.
Thank you, Geek! I'll check those out.

BC_Programmer...thanks for the idea (not sure what switch does what, so I tried your version), but it makes no difference...identical behavior. I end up on the same page/form/window, but the focus is lost. You have to click to return the focus and do the paste.Still not certain of the objective.
How to Automatically Fill in Repetitive Web Forms
Is a topic in Google search. Also called Autofill. Both Chrome and Firefox can do this.
Here is one of many finds in a search.
http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/kill-the-tedium-of-online-forms-with-these-10-great-autofill-tools/
Quote
What Does It Mean To “Autofill” Online Forms?
It simply means that a program of some kind automatically detects the presence of a form on a webpage and fills in the information you have previously given it. It is important to use a program and service which is reputable as your information can be sensitive. Of course, it is up to you what you give it, but obviously the more information you provide, the more it can fill in for you.

Your original topic was about keyboard focus. I think that has to be done at a different level, like maybe in C# or some other tool like that.
https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.windows.input.keyboard.focus%28v=vs.110%29.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396
The above does not seem to apply to a batch file.
Thanks, Geek! I appreciate it.

My original idea of the web form as an example was a bad one because you are right, autofill exists...and I'm not looking to use this feature for that. I was just trying to find a very simply example (and I chose wrong). The issue is all about keyboard focus...thanks for the thoughts on C#...if we have to go to that level, we'll probably just have to click to regain the focus . None of us are "real" programmers!A number of articles on 'keyboard focus' can be found. These almost use sopme language other than pure batch. Batch, be default, steals keyboard focus unless it CAM run in the background.
Here is how I work. I have a whole lot of words and phrases that I can use to write e-mail, fill in forms, remember passwords and do almost anything that is repetitive,. I have to. Whit my vision problem I can not see the print on the screen, unless Iuse the magnifier, which is awkward.
Here is how it works. I get to a document, e-mail, web form or whatever where the keyboard focus is on a field. I already know what it is from prior use. So I hit control 1 and a little windows pops up and gives me a choice of 26 items, labeled A -Z. If what I want is not in that lost, I can go to another list until I find what I need. When I find what I want, I just press a single key and the keyboard focus goes back to where is was and the phrase I needed is slowly typed into the flied. This can even include the TAB key to advance to the next field.
But I did not write the program. This is a form of 'keyboard automation' and uses a very simple script that most can understand.
So I did not have to do anything about keyboard focus. The program does that by itself. But it is not a batch program. It is what at one time was can a TSR,a background task that monitors the keyboard for hot-keys and responds to commands in a script.
In short, it is a kind of 'Hot Key' tool that does almost anything a user would do at the keyboard. It remembers where the cursor was and comes back there to do its job after you start a preset action.
Put another way, the cursor position has to be remembered before anything else. So it should be part of the hot key thing.
Let me know if this is anything like you want.
I would imagine that there might h be some way to preserve the keyboard focus in a batch file, but I don't know how.

THANK YOU, Geek!!! That's terrific information (and you're confirming what I'm figuring out through my research). Yes, we may have to go that direction. I truly appreciate all your information and guidance. I know just enough to be dangerous OK, now we will be on the lookout , now we know you are dangerous.
The tool I use is called KetText and I paid for it to get all the features.'
Here is the documentation.
http://www.mjmsoft.com/ktext.pdf
I recommend reading the manual before trying.

Solve : ASUS tablet?

I've run some scans and nothing is coming up. When I open IE from the taskbar it opens normally. Can I uninstall/delete this IE app. When I right-click on the app and choose uninstall it takes me to the control panel to uninstall programs. Any ideas? This happened to me with IE on my desktop, had to kill IE with the Task Manager. I suspect the shortcut icon is hijacked, delete it & create a new one. Or are you referring to IE on the Start Screen of the tablet? You can pin & un-pin those icons. I rarely use the Start Screen on my tablet, since it takes you to the desktop for many apps, i.e. Firefox.

BTW, my tablet is an Asus Transformer T100.It won't let me delete it. When I right-click it gives me Unpin from start, unpin from taskbar, uninstall, open new window and resize. It appears to be that the app is hijacked. Multiple and varied errors are typically caused by either malware or failure of a significant hardware device (anything from ram to your hd to your motherboard). Let's try some basic troubleshooting first:

1) Please run full system scans with BOTH your installed ANTI virus app (you do have one, yes?) AND with MalwareBytes.

2) Check the hd: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287
Make sure you select the tool which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option), to make the CD bootable.
For Toshiba drives, see here: http://sdd.toshiba.com/main.aspx?Path=ServicesSupport/FujitsuDrivesUSandCanada/SoftwareUtilities#diagnostic

3) Check the ram: download memtest (http://memtest.org/). Burn it to a cd using a dedicated .iso burning utility (http://www.petri.co.il/how_to_write_iso_files_to_cd.htm), make sure the cd drive is at the top of the boot order in bios, then boot to the newly created cd and run the utility.

Let's see where we are after that. Also swap in a known good PSU of the same or greater wattage overnite...that'll eliminate it as the culprit...

Solve : New User: Be prepared todo a clean install of Windows 8.?

Answer»

This is not new information at all. But many new users are not aware of the problem until it is too late. New users want to make a Windows install DVD as soon as you get the new PC. Or before something goes wrong.

Here are relevant links.
Save yourself from OEM’s bad idea, get a clean install of Windows 8.1
and:
The complete guide to a Windows 8 clean installation

Feel free to add to this. Just performed a clean install of 8 to my ASUS laptop that was 8 from factory that I downgraded to 7, used 7 for almost 18 months, and then removed 7 and brought back to factory 8 in prep for 10 vs blowing my Windows 7 key for the 10 free upgrade. Fortunately the 16GB thumb drive that I placed the recovery to before the downgrade to 7 worked.

Only problem I had which I am unsure if its STILL a problem or not is that when it got to the Windows 8 key activation, the laptop doesn't have a key on it other than one that I have been told is hidden in the BIOS. So where there is a field to normally ENTER a windows key, I have no information to enter wince the laptop has a Windows 8 sticker on the bottom of it, but no alpha-numeric key to enter. Fortunately this key window had a SKIP option, and so I did this and then when it got connected to the internet, I am HOPING the embedded 8 key was read from the BIOS and its now satisfied. I took a few minutes looking around to see if Windows 8 needed to be activated and it didn't seem to show any indication that it needs to be activated to X-many days etc, so hopefully it will continue to work and not timeout.

UEFI was disabled on the BIOS for the Windows 7 install and installing 8 back to it, I am not sure if UEFI was reconfigured as active again from the 8 install or not. I suppose I will have to check on this as for the initial factory build had the BIOS access locked out from Delete key or any other key to try to get into the BIOS at boot, and I had to go through an extensive process to force Windows 8 to tare its claws out of the GRASP of the BIOS to re-enable the BIOS hot key at POST to actually function. The initial build had where you had to ask Windows 8 to have access to the BIOS to get into the BIOS. This was one of my pet peves with Microsoft and Windows 8 to restrict BIOS access at the POST level. Which to me was intentionally done to try to anchor the Windows 8 to the hardware and make it hard for people to get rid of it as for I dont see any other strategic reason for Microsoft to target to hold hostage the BIOS access at the POST level and then hide the ease of access to gain access to the BIOS for users in which you have to request 8 to grant access to the BIOS, and then it would reboot and then allow access to the BIOS. from another source:
Quote

This BIOS replacement, UEFI, caused some serious problems with “alternative” platforms.

DaveLembke, Thank you for your response.

Ypu may get some critical remarks about this:
Quote
Which to me was intentionally done to try to anchor the Windows 8 to the hardware and make it hard for people to get rid of it as for I dont see any other strategic reason for Microsoft to target to hold hostage the BIOS access at the POST level and then hide the ease of access to gain access to the BIOS for users in which you have to request 8 to grant access to the BIOS, and then it would reboot and then allow access to the BIOS.
Microsoft PR mantissas that the new BIOS, The UEFI, and its intimate relation with the OS is beneficial to MS, the OEM and the end user.

Above I put a quote that has been posted many times elsewhere. (No reference needed. It was echoed on the Linux forums.)

The argument is that putting limits on user access might reduce the number of 'accidents' users have with the new computer. It is like have having a big sign with the words 'Open only in case of fire' and then somebody opens it just to see what is inside.
Quote
The initial build had where you had to ask Windows 8 to have access to the BIOS to get into the BIOS. This was one of my pet peves with Microsoft and Windows 8 to restrict BIOS access at the POST level.

There was never a build of Windows 8 where you had to "ask Windows 8" to get access to the BIOS...

The Secure Boot feature is part of the UEFI specification, which was created by Intel, not Microsoft.

Outside of PCs for mobile systems and tablets Microsoft does require that Secure boot not have an option to be disabled. The amount of hubbub that causes is FAIRLY surprising, considering the other Operating Systems on the market in that sector have exactly the same locked down approach (requiring unsupported jailbreaking/rooting steps) Quote
There was never a build of Windows 8 where you had to "ask Windows 8" to get access to the BIOS...
True.
However, any business user may hire a company to lock down all workstations in such away that no user can change the UEFI parameters. Exceptions are to either physically violate the computer case or else employ some special hacking software. Which is forbidden by policy.

Every Corporate PC s must be under the control of central administrator. One of the biggest headaches came with users who brought in USB devices with their 'favorite' software. Intel had to do something. The UEFI was the answer. It can be setup so no low privileged user can invalid it.

And on many new systems even doing a CMOS cell removal reset will not erase the password needed to get into the UEFI parameters.

This should not be an issue for home user. Unless the PC belongs to the company.

Intel UEFI objectives.
The Intel® Platform Innovation Framework for Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI)

Of course, any business user should already know how to do backup and restore for Windows 8. My intent was to caution new home users who recently got a Windows 8.1 system and found there is no install DVD provided by the OPEM.

Solve : Hibernation,Standby and Sleep ---- again?

Answer»

I continue to be a bit confused about this topic.

1. The Shutdown Gadget (from 8 Gadgets) which I have on my desktop has a button called Standby, which I am told (based on the description I have given in the past) is actually not taking my Tablet into Standby / Sleep, but into Hibernation. Yet it has another button called Hibernation ---- which unfortunately (like the Standby button also) has not worked for some time, despite re-installing, so I am unable to check now on what it does. I am hoping to contact the publisher to see if I can get the buttons working again. (For the time being I use other ways of shutting down, usually from the menu displayed by right-clicking on the START button). Hibernation does not appear in any other menu apart from the Gadget.

2. In SEARCH I get RESULTS for Sleep which include links for the Tablet's settings for Sleep, as well as 'below the line' articles on Sleep; but if I search for Hibernation or Standby I get only 'below the line' articles on the terms, I do not get any links to actual settings on the Tablet for either Hibernation or Standby.

3. I adjusted the Power Settings when I first had the Tablet a few months ago. I did not set it to Hibernate, only to Sleep, after a period of inactivity. I was not aware until recently that my Tablet had been going into Hibernation (rather than Sleep) when I clicked the Gadget Standby button. I tend to just use either Sleep or Shutdown

Does any of this this make sense?

Clayto

Why did you install a Shutdown Gadget (from 8 Gadgets)? If you open Control Panel, Power Options, you can configure your power options. I see no need for a Shutdown Gadget (from 8 Gadgets). Hibernation is good when you want to shutdown the computer while the files are open. Since it will automatically save your file in hard drive then it will shutdown. On the other hand, sleep mode is only used when you pause your work in tablet for a while then get BACK. Some of the activity in your tablet are being off but, it will not automatically save whatever open file you have in your tablet. Solve : Loginui.exe runtime failure, crash upon restart: 0x4000015 at 0xae040aee?

Answer»

OS: Windows 8 Pro 64-bit

Recently I've encountered a problem when restarting or shutting down the computer, if I am logged in or not when I initiate the shut down/restart, in which the computer stays on the shut down or restart page (with the swirly dots) for at least SEVERAL minutes, before an error occurs stating that loginui.exe has had a runtime error and has asked to terminate an unusual way (or something similar). Following that notice, it occasionally gives me an error code of 0x40000015 and varying locations, sometimes the notice doesn't stay up long so I was able to get this one: 0xae040aee. It seems to switch the location depending on if it is shutting down or restarting.

Upon rebooting the computer, I can log in but within a few minutes the system is frozen. I have to perform a hard shut down. If I try to sign out of the account before it freezes (I can tell if it is going to, more on that in a minute), and I don't sign out quick enough, I will often be unable to sign out due to a windows process preventing me from doing so, usually a task host window. Sometimes it doesn't say the name. Anyways, I pick the "sign out anyway" and it goes to a blank screen (blank being whatever color you have chosen to personalize your computer to display), and it sits there until the heat death of the universe. Picking "cancel" instead doesn't help either.

I can sometimes tell if I managed to get it to start up where it won't crash or not. After the first 30 seconds or so, either the desktop will be blank (the taskbar will appear but the background will be a solid color), programs will refuse to start (as in clicking on the program makes it look like it will start as the icon flashes and all of that, but it never starts), apps don't display their logos when they are started (only their background color is displayed), things start freezing (anything from the charms bar to the mouse), and, if I logged out before restarting, the wrong lock screen comes up (my personalized screen instead of the seattle screen, or vice versa).

Occasionally, if I can log into my account and log out, then begin a standard shutdown/ restart from the login page, then wait a minute, then do a hard shut down before the error message occurs, I can reboot and get into the system and it will behave normally-until another reboot/ shutdown.

Attempted and failed TROUBLESHOOTING methods:
Multiple restarts of every kind (hard, soft, hybrid, full, etc.)
sfc
chkdsk
Manually replacing logonui.exe, and two other files (it was winhost and winhostex or something similar (I'm not going to bother looking it up now), in the system32 folder)
Updating software, from the OS to C++ redistributable, etc.
Removing recently installed software
Registry cleaning
Automatic repair, both with and without the disk
Looked over the startup options
A few other things that I cannot recall at the moment
Petting the mouse (didn't work)
Screaming quietly at it (didn't work either)

What seemed to work, but didn't really:
Diagnostic mode (it didn't freeze on start up, but it still wouldn't shut down correctly)

Things that won't work:
Restore point (I tried it, and I happened to try it before the system froze)
Virus cleaning (there's not a single virus on it, and I know that because almost all of my browsing goes through virtual machines, and even if there is a virus it certainly wouldn't have caused all this damage after all of the repair stuff I've tried)

What I do not want to do:
Refresh, Reset, or any form of reinstall except for reinstalling system files (I want to keep my programs and files)

I will do this as a last resort but I really think it is probably just one corrupted file that's causing all the ruckus.

My next step if no solutions are found is that I've used the easy transfer wizard to put a backup of program files and other things on a SECOND partition, and then I'll reinstall windows and put use the easy transfer to restore (do you have any comments on how successful that will be, I also have the registry backed up?).

The attached file is a system diagnostic report since no dump files are generated to my knowledge.

Note: I posted this verbatim on Microsoft's community page and so far have gotten no response.

[recovering disk space, attachment DELETED by admin]I have narrowed the problem to either the finger print reading software or the driver.

The administrator can mark this post as solved if necessary.

Solve : small text?

Answer»

Ever since I got my new computer with Windows 8 and a dual-boot with XP I've had some problems with some programs with very small fonts. See attachments. Is there a setting in Win 8 which produces such small fonts?

The only screen i see is IE...have you tried the font settings in IE specifically as an app instead of Win8 ? ?
P.S. I got driver support on my 2003 Toshiba last year and i cant get drivers for a 2 year old laptop? Are you sure you double-checked with that Model # ? ?
Unfortunately it's up to the manuf. whether or not they CHOOSE to write drivers for any OS...
This happened on tons of budget priced Vista laptops...you couldn't install XP nor Win7 on them...Vista only.
If this is the case here with this laptop you could try the Win7 drivers which may or may not work for Win8 so no guarantees...ok, maybe i didnt make this clear. I cant find ANY drivers. not win 7, which is what this computer was made for. Not 8 nothing. A driver page for this machine does not exist. At least that i can find. Solve : App issues?

Answer»

Just bought a new Lenovo desktop pre loaded with 8. I'm wishing now that it was preloaded with 45 caliber rounds. Works ok as far as getting on the internet and browsing. On the "start" screen, I clicked on e-bay and it SAID "App can't open, Check the windows store for more info". When I click on "go to store" it asks for a microsoft account password. This happens on just about every app on my desktop. I have made up a password FIVE times yet whenever I try to download the app, it says password incorrect. Shy of driving to Bill Gates house and pounding on his door, does anybody have any ideas? At this popint I cannot use any of the APPs.

PS:
I have already had to restore this thing twice.Microsoft Account means your on-line account. I used my hotmail (now outlook) account information. That's what so frustrating. I have actually created a new account using a different e-mail. (the one microsoft sent me the validation to) yet whenever I type it in I get nada, zilch, zero. same problem. And heres the kicker. When I first power up the computer I get another windows password BOX and THAT password works every time........this MAKES windows ME look like a shining star..................
Quote from: nyernga on April 15, 2013, 04:26:29 PM

When I first power up the computer I get another windows password box and THAT password works every time...

That's your Windows Login screen. Nothing new about it. It's BASICALLY the same as Windows 7 and previous versions of Windows. Just wondering if you remembered to register ...i've seen this before. And heres the kicker. When I first power up the computer I get another windows password box and THAT password works every time
Then you did not sign-in with a Microsoft Account. You can do so with the Charm's bar; point to the upper-right corner of the screen, and click Settings and then Change PC Settings, click Users, then "Sign in with a Microsoft Account" and follow the instructions. The Account MUST be a Hotmail or Outlook E-mail address.

You do not need a Microsoft Account to use the PC normally. You need it for any Win8 Apps, however. SINCE you have not signed in with a Microsoft Account you cannot access the Store.

By the way, you have to log in to WINDOWS using the Microsoft Account; you cannot enter it later in the Windows Store prompt, I don't believe. Thanks to all. I don't have a hot mail or outlook address. I'll try adding it and see what happens. I know I registered the computer with lenovo but not windows..You can register and sign up your MS account and e-mail all in one step.
