Solve : Computer freezes within 5 minutes on startup, mouse freezes on restart? |
Answer» This problem has been persisting for a few weeks. I did a fresh re-install of windows 8 (genuine) and it is still happening so I thought I would ask for help. When I first turn my desktop on everyday within 5 minutes of starting up it freezes, no mouse or keyboard response (sometimes before I even have a chance to login). I have tried unplugging and plugging them back in to no avail. If there is anything animated (like a game) on my screen at the time of the freeze it will also be frozen. I have also tried WAITING to see if it will unfreeze, even after 1 hour there is no change. Fans are still spinning and all lights (in tower and on headset/keyboard/mouse) are operational. The process known as usbmonitor or TODO: File description belongs to software usbmonitor or TODO: Product name by VIA Technologies (www.via.com.tw) or TODO: Company name. So I am going to remove it with Revo. I don't think it could be the cause of my problems though.. do you? Yes...As far as I can tell the VIA drivers go with the chipset in my motherboard. The program itself is called VIA XHCI Host Controller Driver and has something to do with USB 3.0...usbmonitor is not a VIA process from what i have searched...is it listed as a Program in Start Menu / The publisher was VIA Technologies in start-up and it was located in the Program Files 'VIA XHCI UASP Utility' folder, along with a Configurations Settings (.ini) file that says the following: Quote This device can perform faster=This device can perform faster Along with a list of languages So I dug a little deeper into my VIA file in the x86 Program files and found a text document called 'VIA SETUP' there seems to be a problem there. I have attached the file below. I tried to re-install the xHCX64 Application that was also in the file and received this error message: Quote Setup AP for VIA USB 3.0 controller V1.0 has stopped working I don't know what this means but perhaps it is the problem? [attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]Going to uninstall and re-install with the V4.90A drivers I found here: http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4602#driverAfter removing all of the VIA technologies software everything seems to be working!Good news indeed...nice work. |

Solve : Computer Running Slow after prolonged intenet browsing? |
Answer» Hi All, I have a laptop HP g series {2gb ram;500gb HDD;i3;inbuilt 2gb ATI radon} Running on windows 8.1. What exactly i noticed is that my system works slow after prolonged internet surfing. I do that normal steps to keep my COMPUTER boosted eg:clearing cache,DEFRAG, diskclean up. Is it because of some virus that exist and become active only if i start internet? Please suggest. Thanks in advance.FireFox ? ?FIRST thing I noticed is you should upgrade to at least 4 gigs of ram that would be a huge help. I to GET slow running internet after extended browsing; guessing that something inside gets overheated; not to a danger point ; and it needs to slow things until it can cool down getting back to a normal range. Would love to track all software and HARDWARE / everything on the computer that has a heat signature and get that printed out and see whats out of the normal high / low heat range and then go from their . . . |

Solve : Forced Upgrade? |
Answer» What updates from MS am I looking for to delete so that I can stay with windows 8.1; which I love and not let MS sneak windows 10 into my setup ? According to posted stories they will sneak it onThose posted stories are wrong. Quote any idea how I say NOOO loud and clear ?By not installing it in July 29th. Unless you actually want to get rid of the "Get Windows 10" Notification icon. That would be KB3035583. You can remove it manually using Windows Update and finding it in "Installed Updates".Ok hum stories that are posted across the web and other help forums are dead wrong . Quote from: Verylost on June 30, 2015, 07:18:34 AM Ok hum stories that are posted across the web and other help forums are dead wrong . You asked for assistance and received it. Your sarcasm is both misplaced and not appreciated. And yes, the stories and info on other forums to which you refer are indeed wrong.Just for reference, here is one such article. Actually, it's the only one I could find. I can find no other articles or forum posts saying that Windows 10 will in any way be a "forced" update: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2015/04/09/microsofts_mystery_update_will_push_windows_10_onto_window_7_8_machines/ Titled "Microsoft's Mystery Update will push Windows 10 onto Windows 7 and 8 machines" It is misleading. The "update" it is referring to is the one that advertises to eligible customers that they can reserve and upgrade to Windows 10. It will not force the installation. Nothing in the article copy substantiates the title. Other results for 'Windows 10 Forced Install' (without quotes) are about the current insider preview not really having an option to turn off updates. To Allen - What sarcasm I blinked just stating what I googled yesterday and what yahoo has posted that's all I did didn't know it would upset anyone; if that's the case close it; mark it answered OK ?You have plenty of time to decide. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/lifecycle Win10 isn't all that much different from Win8.1. I have the Insider Preview running on 3 different computers.Tell me again how MS won t do forced upgrades just SAW this and two other forced MS upgrades posted on the web all are faked/ dead wrong correct ; but I should delete the one upgrade posted above to stay safe correct ? The stories are all over the web dang it and so far the REVIEWS posted say to avoid win 10 at all costs; but guess that's another question ? http://www.forbes.com/sites/gordonkelly/2015/07/17/windows-10-forced-automatic-updates/?utm_campaign=yahootix&partner=yahootix Quote from: Verylost on July 18, 2015, 05:46:47 PM Tell me again how MS won t do forced upgrades just saw this and two other forced MS upgrades posted on the web all are faked/ dead wrong correct ; but I should delete the one upgrade posted above to stay safe correct ? The stories are all over the web dang it and so far the reviews posted say to avoid win 10 at all costs; but guess that's another question ? Your original post asks how you can prevent Windows 10 from being installed on your Windows 8.1 computer. The article talks about how Windows 10 Home editions will not provide update options that allow you to not install updates at all. Previous versions of Windows will not be "force upgraded" to Windows 10. The article doesn't even imply this to be the case, so how you've reached that conclusion, I am unsure. Hum ok ? ? Can I ask which upgrades I can delete to get rid of windows 10 pop up reminder nag that sneaked in to my system that's down by my clock in the lower right ? ! Its that bloody MS icon; the window DIVIDED into 4 parts certainly don t need that nag - thanks |

Solve : Battery Charge dependent on time? |
Answer» Hi good folk, Doesn't make a lot of sense that it would only do that at certain times, though. The OP did not mention where he lives. In some areas the line voltage might vary as much as 20% during a 24 hour period. Some chargers do not correct for voltage sag. Also, temperature variation during the day. Some charging systems have poor temperature compensation. And when batteries get old and near end-of-life the performance becomes erratic. But it could be the charger. About three years ago USA TODAY hard this story: The sad lifespan of a laptop battery It has not got much better. I dont think you guys get it. Let me put it this way: Between 1pm and 10pm it doesn't charge. Between 10:01 pm and 12:59 pm it charges. (PC TIME). So if I change my PC time to eg. 4 AM or 11 AM it will charge. If i change it back to say 2pm it won't. OK. Important detail not mentioned earlier. That detail indicates that the charger is on a schedule. It was by design. The life of your battery can be extended by reducing the number and frequency of charge cycles. . Some think that a trick recharge is better. Wrong. The engineers say the battery should undergo deep and less frequent charge cycles. From Google: Quote I have fully drained the lithium batteries for my laptops several time without any issues. I would say you should simply re-charge the battery once it drops to 5%. Regarding "over-charging" or keeping the laptop plugged into the AC outlet all the time when the battery is at 100%... This is generally a bad thing to do.Feb 24, 2014Quote from: Stakes on JULY 05, 2015, 08:16:46 AM I dont think you guys get it. Good luck with your issue. What level is it on when it says "Plugged in, not charging" - A lot of laptops do this when the battery is nearly full (e.g. 98%) instead of charging the laptop to the max. This helps prolong the lifespan of the battery. Quote from: camerongray on July 05, 2015, 08:58:57 AM What level is it on when it says "Plugged in, not charging" - A lot of laptops do this when the battery is nearly full (e.g. 98%) instead of charging the laptop to the max. This helps prolong the lifespan of the battery. If what they are saying is accurate then they can change the time on their computer and "control" when it charges. That doesn't seem consistent with that behaviour to me. Particularly ODD would be that the laptop is older and the behaviour is presumably something that appeared more recently. |

Solve : Need help: Windows 8.1 taking hours to load.? |
Answer» So it was all okay until the afternoon, where I forgot to turn on my AVG and just merely allowed my friend to plug in his USB. His USB had a problem where there were only shortcuts so while I looked for the right attrib commands just to be sure, my computer lagged and even there is a significant delay on my opening the Start menu, so I had to restart. And then boom, it keeps on loading, stuck on the Windows 8 LOGO and the circle. I tried the command prompt on the boot USB and used the commands C: and then attrib -h -r -s -a *.* What was the purpose of doing this ? ? If you simply need your schoolwork hook up the drive to an external HDD enclosure and you can retrieve your data...I did that to try to find suspicious files in my Drive, in which I couldn't do cuz of hiberfil.sysThat makes less sense than doing what you did... |

Solve : How to change the focus back to original window via a Batch File Command? |
Answer» Good evening, All - ...WSH engines include various implementations for the REXX, BASIC, Perl, Ruby, Tcl, PHP, JavaScript, Delphi, Python, XSLT, and other languages. On this forum the preference seems to be using VbScript with batch to go into some things that would need more control. Such as forms. One advantage of WSH is, let's say, somebody in you group might be more handy with Python. He could write some good code and it can be started in batch. Then the batch might chge some detail and finish the job. Back to VBS, VBScript: Using VBScript to Fill Out a Web Form Is that he kind of thing you want? More examples are available. If you want the easy route for this, if the text is always in the same location on the display, I'd go with creating a Keyboard/Mouse macro with a tool like Jitbits Macro Creator. I bought this software years ago and use it for making a stand alone exe to run on other systems or same system. * To work on other systems, display resolution has to be the same and placement of trigger point ( desktop icons etc ) have to match up for exact X,Y location. A macro to complete this could be made in as little as 3 minutes. Thats why I like it so much is because OTHERWISE your spending hours writing code and debugging to get it right. This tool you can just say start recording the process. And then every movement, mouse click, and keyboard action is recorded in realtime until you select to end the recording. You can then play it back and it will perform exactly what you did. You can then either compile it into an EXE to share with other systems, or you can go in and look at the macro instruction list and edit it to change time delays to make it run faster if you want it to get to an icon and point and click to trigger it faster than your initial recorded motion of your hand to mouse etc, as well as you can add a loop instruction in it with a counter if you want to get advanced and customize it to run X-many times, or infinite loop to run non stop until an abort key is entered ending the macro. This program was some of the best spent money of programs I have readily available to me: https://www.jitbit.com/macro-recorder/Thank you Geek After Dark! I'll check out the links/info. We don't have an internal IT department...I'm as close as it gets, and I'm just not afraid to try things...but I am NOT a programmer. I AM a good 'monkey'...meaning I can take/adjust existing things to suit our needs . Not necessarily the 'cleanest' or 'prettiest', but usually (with luck) functional. So, I try to go with fairly 'low tech' solutions, so others can copy/adjust as needed without much tech knowledge. In other words, if I can document with images/text, then perhaps someone else can do it, as well. I appreciate your ideas!Thank you, Dave Lembke. The location of the text is NOT always in the same spot on the screen, so I don't think that this will work for this situation, but it is DEFINITELY an interesting little piece of software and one that I will ABSOLUTELY check out (but for other challenges). I LOVE the idea of quickly scripting keystrokes and have needed this tool often, so I'm sure that I'll need it again! I'm still trying to solve THIS issue, but now I know that I have a solution for some other issues! As DaveLembke said , a macro keystroke recorder might help in some cases. Some other things for future reference. There are a number of ways surrogate programs will imitate the typing of a real person. This is useful of applications that only take input from the keyboard. For more on this idea see: Auto Hotkey, Keyboard shortcut, Macro, Modifier key, Shortcut key. Or look here: 10 AutoHotkey Alternatives To Create Your Own Macros and ... And there is more... but this is enough for now. would it not work to have the launched command prompt start minimized? start "" /MIN "cmd.exe /c clip < c:\transfers\test.txt" I also don't think the /k switch makes sense for your usage- I swapped it for /c here. Thank you, Geek! I'll check those out. BC_Programmer...thanks for the idea (not sure what switch does what, so I tried your version), but it makes no difference...identical behavior. I end up on the same page/form/window, but the focus is lost. You have to click to return the focus and do the paste.Still not certain of the objective. How to Automatically Fill in Repetitive Web Forms Is a topic in Google search. Also called Autofill. Both Chrome and Firefox can do this. Here is one of many finds in a search. http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/kill-the-tedium-of-online-forms-with-these-10-great-autofill-tools/ Quote What Does It Mean To “Autofill” Online Forms? Your original topic was about keyboard focus. I think that has to be done at a different level, like maybe in C# or some other tool like that. https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.windows.input.keyboard.focus%28v=vs.110%29.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396 The above does not seem to apply to a batch file. Thanks, Geek! I appreciate it. My original idea of the web form as an example was a bad one because you are right, autofill exists...and I'm not looking to use this feature for that. I was just trying to find a very simply example (and I chose wrong). The issue is all about keyboard focus...thanks for the thoughts on C#...if we have to go to that level, we'll probably just have to click to regain the focus . None of us are "real" programmers!A number of articles on 'keyboard focus' can be found. These almost use sopme language other than pure batch. Batch, be default, steals keyboard focus unless it CAM run in the background. Here is how I work. I have a whole lot of words and phrases that I can use to write e-mail, fill in forms, remember passwords and do almost anything that is repetitive,. I have to. Whit my vision problem I can not see the print on the screen, unless Iuse the magnifier, which is awkward. Here is how it works. I get to a document, e-mail, web form or whatever where the keyboard focus is on a field. I already know what it is from prior use. So I hit control 1 and a little windows pops up and gives me a choice of 26 items, labeled A -Z. If what I want is not in that lost, I can go to another list until I find what I need. When I find what I want, I just press a single key and the keyboard focus goes back to where is was and the phrase I needed is slowly typed into the flied. This can even include the TAB key to advance to the next field. But I did not write the program. This is a form of 'keyboard automation' and uses a very simple script that most can understand. So I did not have to do anything about keyboard focus. The program does that by itself. But it is not a batch program. It is what at one time was can a TSR,a background task that monitors the keyboard for hot-keys and responds to commands in a script. In short, it is a kind of 'Hot Key' tool that does almost anything a user would do at the keyboard. It remembers where the cursor was and comes back there to do its job after you start a preset action. Put another way, the cursor position has to be remembered before anything else. So it should be part of the hot key thing. Let me know if this is anything like you want. I would imagine that there might h be some way to preserve the keyboard focus in a batch file, but I don't know how. THANK YOU, Geek!!! That's terrific information (and you're confirming what I'm figuring out through my research). Yes, we may have to go that direction. I truly appreciate all your information and guidance. I know just enough to be dangerous OK, now we will be on the lookout , now we know you are dangerous. The tool I use is called KetText and I paid for it to get all the features.' Here is the documentation. http://www.mjmsoft.com/ktext.pdf I recommend reading the manual before trying. |

Solve : ASUS tablet? |
Answer» I'm trying to DISINFECT my daughter's tablet. When I click on the IE app I receive a WARNING that the computer is affected and to call a NUMBER to have it repaired. I've run some scans and nothing is coming up. When I open IE from the taskbar it opens normally. Can I uninstall/delete this IE app. When I right-click on the app and choose uninstall it takes me to the control panel to uninstall programs. Any ideas? This happened to me with IE on my desktop, had to kill IE with the Task Manager. I suspect the shortcut icon is hijacked, delete it & create a new one. Or are you referring to IE on the Start Screen of the tablet? You can pin & un-pin those icons. I rarely use the Start Screen on my tablet, since it takes you to the desktop for many apps, i.e. Firefox. It won't let me delete it. When I right-click it gives me Unpin from start, unpin from taskbar, uninstall, open new window and resize. It appears to be that the app is hijacked. If this is a tile on the start screen, than unpinning it from start basically deletes it.Ok, I unpinned it and somehow it came back clean. Problem solved but I don't really know how. Thanks. |

Solve : New User: Be prepared todo a clean install of Windows 8.? |
Answer» This is not new information at all. But many new users are not aware of the problem until it is too late. New users want to make a Windows install DVD as soon as you get the new PC. Or before something goes wrong. This BIOS replacement, UEFI, caused some serious problems with “alternative” platforms. DaveLembke, Thank you for your response. Ypu may get some critical remarks about this: Quote Which to me was intentionally done to try to anchor the Windows 8 to the hardware and make it hard for people to get rid of it as for I dont see any other strategic reason for Microsoft to target to hold hostage the BIOS access at the POST level and then hide the ease of access to gain access to the BIOS for users in which you have to request 8 to grant access to the BIOS, and then it would reboot and then allow access to the BIOS.Microsoft PR mantissas that the new BIOS, The UEFI, and its intimate relation with the OS is beneficial to MS, the OEM and the end user. Above I put a quote that has been posted many times elsewhere. (No reference needed. It was echoed on the Linux forums.) The argument is that putting limits on user access might reduce the number of 'accidents' users have with the new computer. It is like have having a big sign with the words 'Open only in case of fire' and then somebody opens it just to see what is inside. Quote The initial build had where you had to ask Windows 8 to have access to the BIOS to get into the BIOS. This was one of my pet peves with Microsoft and Windows 8 to restrict BIOS access at the POST level. There was never a build of Windows 8 where you had to "ask Windows 8" to get access to the BIOS... The Secure Boot feature is part of the UEFI specification, which was created by Intel, not Microsoft. Outside of PCs for mobile systems and tablets Microsoft does require that Secure boot not have an option to be disabled. The amount of hubbub that causes is FAIRLY surprising, considering the other Operating Systems on the market in that sector have exactly the same locked down approach (requiring unsupported jailbreaking/rooting steps) Quote There was never a build of Windows 8 where you had to "ask Windows 8" to get access to the BIOS...True. However, any business user may hire a company to lock down all workstations in such away that no user can change the UEFI parameters. Exceptions are to either physically violate the computer case or else employ some special hacking software. Which is forbidden by policy. Every Corporate PC s must be under the control of central administrator. One of the biggest headaches came with users who brought in USB devices with their 'favorite' software. Intel had to do something. The UEFI was the answer. It can be setup so no low privileged user can invalid it. And on many new systems even doing a CMOS cell removal reset will not erase the password needed to get into the UEFI parameters. This should not be an issue for home user. Unless the PC belongs to the company. Intel UEFI objectives. The Intel® Platform Innovation Framework for Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) Of course, any business user should already know how to do backup and restore for Windows 8. My intent was to caution new home users who recently got a Windows 8.1 system and found there is no install DVD provided by the OPEM. |

Solve : Preparing automatic repair? |
Answer» Hoping someone could help. Last year I had my laptop WIPED as it kept saying PREPARING automatic repair. Its worked fine for the last year with no problems. 2 days ago the same thing happened but I was able to get onto the blue screen and there was an option there to restore laptop to when it previously worked ok so I pressed ok and after a while the laptop came back to life. But last night the same thing happened again. Does anyone know how to get back to the blue screen as I have no idea how I did it. Im desperate to get all my word documents off. Thanks in advanceMany experts here will help you if they can. While Windows 7 and Vista had the Backup and Restore applet, Windows 8 introduced File History as the default backup option. File History is a replacement for Previous Versions from Windows Vista and Windows 7. Unlike Windows 7, File History does ALLOW backup to NETWORK shares for all versions of Windows 8 which is a good thing and makes the software far more useful. The downside is that scheduled System Backups have been removed from Windows 8 and 8.1. You can still manually create a system backup, and you can perform a system backup to a network share, but you can’t schedule this to be run. Also, File History only PERFORMS a backup of files in your libraries (Documents, Music, Pictures, Videos, and Desktop folders), as well as any files saved locally from OneDrive. Still, the most important information on your computer is your files ... |

Solve : Hidden Regional Themes in Windows 8?? |
Answer» Does Windows 8 have hidden regional themes like in Windows 7 I can't find the default regional themes online either:Not sure what you MEAN by "default regional themes" but I don't believe it is a feature, hidden or otherwise, in Windows 8, and I don't understand why it matters. Plenty of themes are available at the LINK you posted. Obviously, they can be downloaded to your computer. I was unable to find the "regional themes" on Windows 7 ultimate, myself.I'm looking for the international themes for Canada, Australia, South Africa, Great Britain, and United States that are available in windows 7. Windows 7 comes with lots of new themes which can be accessed using Desktop Personalization windowLife hacker and some other claim there are such. Top 10 Secret Features in Windows 8 If they are 'hidden', how come so MANY know about it? Windows 7 Regional Themes and Wallpapers (Softpedia) So What? Solve : How can I restore files from my usb drive to my restored windows 8.1?? |
Answer» Hello, ... in previous versions of Windows, you could use Backup and Restore to back up your files or create and use a system image backup or repair disc. Windows 8.1 gives you choices about how you can recover your PC and back up your personal files. IMO anyone who is unsure about the procedure should first practice with another spare HARD drive to get the feel of how it works. An alternative is to purchaser an eternal backup drive. This is the best way for laptops. Here is a link to the most popular external backups from Amazon. Best Sellers - External Drives. One must learn how to do it before one tries. |

Solve : new windows install because corrupted? |

Answer» A Computer Repair where I took laptop told me they reinstalled Windows. I had told them I would do the windows updates as I would have had to WAIT till Monday to get it back. They said I would have to reinstall my programs. Well, when I went to install Wndows udates, they were already installed except for one which I installed. Then when I went to programs and features there were nine programs in it. Also when I restart a message appears that operating system not found but it does go to the desktop and I can get online.. Solve : Loginui.exe runtime failure, crash upon restart: 0x4000015 at 0xae040aee? |
Answer» OS: Windows 8 Pro 64-bit Recently I've encountered a problem when restarting or shutting down the computer, if I am logged in or not when I initiate the shut down/restart, in which the computer stays on the shut down or restart page (with the swirly dots) for at least SEVERAL minutes, before an error occurs stating that loginui.exe has had a runtime error and has asked to terminate an unusual way (or something similar). Following that notice, it occasionally gives me an error code of 0x40000015 and varying locations, sometimes the notice doesn't stay up long so I was able to get this one: 0xae040aee. It seems to switch the location depending on if it is shutting down or restarting. Upon rebooting the computer, I can log in but within a few minutes the system is frozen. I have to perform a hard shut down. If I try to sign out of the account before it freezes (I can tell if it is going to, more on that in a minute), and I don't sign out quick enough, I will often be unable to sign out due to a windows process preventing me from doing so, usually a task host window. Sometimes it doesn't say the name. Anyways, I pick the "sign out anyway" and it goes to a blank screen (blank being whatever color you have chosen to personalize your computer to display), and it sits there until the heat death of the universe. Picking "cancel" instead doesn't help either. I can sometimes tell if I managed to get it to start up where it won't crash or not. After the first 30 seconds or so, either the desktop will be blank (the taskbar will appear but the background will be a solid color), programs will refuse to start (as in clicking on the program makes it look like it will start as the icon flashes and all of that, but it never starts), apps don't display their logos when they are started (only their background color is displayed), things start freezing (anything from the charms bar to the mouse), and, if I logged out before restarting, the wrong lock screen comes up (my personalized screen instead of the seattle screen, or vice versa). Occasionally, if I can log into my account and log out, then begin a standard shutdown/ restart from the login page, then wait a minute, then do a hard shut down before the error message occurs, I can reboot and get into the system and it will behave normally-until another reboot/ shutdown. Attempted and failed TROUBLESHOOTING methods: Multiple restarts of every kind (hard, soft, hybrid, full, etc.) sfc chkdsk Manually replacing logonui.exe, and two other files (it was winhost and winhostex or something similar (I'm not going to bother looking it up now), in the system32 folder) Updating software, from the OS to C++ redistributable, etc. Removing recently installed software Registry cleaning Automatic repair, both with and without the disk Looked over the startup options A few other things that I cannot recall at the moment Petting the mouse (didn't work) Screaming quietly at it (didn't work either) What seemed to work, but didn't really: Diagnostic mode (it didn't freeze on start up, but it still wouldn't shut down correctly) Things that won't work: Restore point (I tried it, and I happened to try it before the system froze) Virus cleaning (there's not a single virus on it, and I know that because almost all of my browsing goes through virtual machines, and even if there is a virus it certainly wouldn't have caused all this damage after all of the repair stuff I've tried) What I do not want to do: Refresh, Reset, or any form of reinstall except for reinstalling system files (I want to keep my programs and files) I will do this as a last resort but I really think it is probably just one corrupted file that's causing all the ruckus. My next step if no solutions are found is that I've used the easy transfer wizard to put a backup of program files and other things on a SECOND partition, and then I'll reinstall windows and put use the easy transfer to restore (do you have any comments on how successful that will be, I also have the registry backed up?). The attached file is a system diagnostic report since no dump files are generated to my knowledge. Note: I posted this verbatim on Microsoft's community page and so far have gotten no response. [recovering disk space, attachment DELETED by admin]I have narrowed the problem to either the finger print reading software or the driver. The administrator can mark this post as solved if necessary. |

Solve : small text? |
Answer» Ever since I got my new computer with Windows 8 and a dual-boot with XP I've had some problems with some programs with very small fonts. See attachments. I've tried everything I can think of to ENLARGE these fonts to no avail. Is there some thing I can do to change the size. I can changed the fonts on the desktop but not inside the programs such as this one. I have to set my brower to 125% or more to read the text. Is there a setting in Win 8 which produces such small fonts? Here's how you can increase the size of all text: right click on the desktop and select Personalize, click on Display (in the lower left column), and then under "Change the size of all items", select Medium - 125%. Click Apply. You'll be prompted to logoff and logon again to finalize this. This only works for the desktop and the icons. The text in programs like Word, Xcel and other such programs are all small text but I'll keep working at it. I've noticed the same thing in Windows 8 and Windows XP but I'm quite certain that something in Win8 is driving it.If this is true i'm thinking you may have to do it app by app and save changes where it's available.SUPERDAVE, I hope you get a good answer to this. I have very low vision and have to resort to all kinds of things to see the fine print. The accessibility settings in XP do not change the default fonts inside many programs, just desktop items. If nit is true that Windows 8 was optimized is for mobile devices, one would think that the user would have more control over font settings. Although this is a case by case solution, within most apps (especially MS OFFICE apps), pressing the CTRL key and using the scroll button on your mouse will adjust the size of the text on the screen). Quote from: SuperDave on May 09, 2013, 07:33:39 PM This only works for the desktop and the icons. I've noticed the same thing in Windows 8 and Windows XP but I'm quite certain that something in Win8 is driving it. Actually, since it looks like your issue is with XP, the solution they gave doesn't work at all by virtue of the PROCESS being completely different on Windows XP. This is the default Setting I STARTED with, before fiddling with the DPI: TO change the DPI, I right-clicked the desktop and selected Properties, went to the Settings Tab, and Chose the Advanced Tab. on the General Tab of the Advanced Display Dialog, there is a DPI Combobox. I set this to 120dpi, then restarted Windows. In Excel, this is the result: Definitely larger. In both cases, the font is 10pt Arial. I don't know how much IE6 would mirror this. However, you can change the font size for a webpage by using Control+ the scroll wheel or Control+ the plus or minus keys on the numpad. I just tested this and got some screen captures to prove it. I've attached two captures of the Sports topic from msn.com. The first attachment is at 125%; the second, 100%. [recovering disk space, attachment deleted by ADMIN]Thanks Soybean and BC. Both methods worked and it's almost back to the way I want it. |

Solve : onscreen number pad? |
Answer» The onscreen number pad in Windows 8 is set up like the numbers on a phone instead of the numbers on a keyboard, which seems really dumb to me. Anybody know how to CHANGE the onscreen number pad layout? I've done a bit of searching but all of the keywords I use just come up with results to change the keyboard language. I'm fine with the normal onscreen keyboard layout, just not the number pad layout. C:\Program Files \Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Ink\TabTip.exeOK, that worked. +1 I also see now that I can start it via a Command Prompt panel; I made a mistake the first time I tried that (mentioned in my previous post). I wonder why that is the only way I can start it. How do you start it? Is it an app on your Start screen? Quote from: soybean on May 01, 2013, 08:00:08 AM OK, that worked. +1 I also see now that I can start it via a Command Prompt panel; I made a mistake the first time I tried that (mentioned in my previous post). No the button is on the taskbar next to the notification area. It also will open when selecting any text input field. I can also open it via explorer. The program starts with windows (hidden) on my surface but not my laptop. If enough people protest, somebody will either hack the existing program or build a replacement for it. There are articles about changing the keyboard, so logically somebody will find a way to change just the numeric pad layout. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/type-with-the-on-screen-keyboard Apparently MS WANTS to to use the number pad for dialing a phone. They may have reasoned that two layouts would just confuse everybody. The supports my theory that MS wants your PC to become a Smartphone. Here we go yet again... Quote from: patio on May 01, 2013, 10:17:01 AM Here we go yet again... Some things never change. Anyone else notice that this is topic 137137 Quote from: michaewlewis on May 01, 2013, 08:42:23 AM No the button is on the taskbar next to the notification area.Does the button look like the icon on the left end of the image below, from my laptop? That's normally not on my taskbar. It's only there now because I opened the Touch Keyboard in response to this discussion. Really, having the button there upon startup on a laptop that does not have a touchscreen makes no sense; it's useless. So, I suspect that, when Windows 8 is installed by a manufacturer on such laptops, the Touch Keyboard is simply disabled. Actually I'm pretty sure windows detects whether it is a touch screen or tablet and enables it on install. I reinstalled win8 on my surface and it was already enabled, whereas my laptop wasn't already enabled. |

Solve : App issues? |
Answer» Just bought a new Lenovo desktop pre loaded with 8. I'm wishing now that it was preloaded with 45 caliber rounds. Works ok as far as getting on the internet and browsing. On the "start" screen, I clicked on e-bay and it SAID "App can't open, Check the windows store for more info". When I click on "go to store" it asks for a microsoft account password. This happens on just about every app on my desktop. I have made up a password FIVE times yet whenever I try to download the app, it says password incorrect. Shy of driving to Bill Gates house and pounding on his door, does anybody have any ideas? At this popint I cannot use any of the APPs. When I first power up the computer I get another windows password box and THAT password works every time...That's your Windows Login screen. Nothing new about it. It's BASICALLY the same as Windows 7 and previous versions of Windows. Just wondering if you remembered to register ...i've seen this before. Quote from: nyernga on April 15, 2013, 04:26:29 PM That's what so frustrating. I have actually created a new account using a different e-mail.The password to log-in will be the same as the password for the Account itself. Quote same problem. And heres the kicker. When I first power up the computer I get another windows password box and THAT password works every timeThen you did not sign-in with a Microsoft Account. You can do so with the Charm's bar; point to the upper-right corner of the screen, and click Settings and then Change PC Settings, click Users, then "Sign in with a Microsoft Account" and follow the instructions. The Account MUST be a Hotmail or Outlook E-mail address. You do not need a Microsoft Account to use the PC normally. You need it for any Win8 Apps, however. SINCE you have not signed in with a Microsoft Account you cannot access the Store. By the way, you have to log in to WINDOWS using the Microsoft Account; you cannot enter it later in the Windows Store prompt, I don't believe. Thanks to all. I don't have a hot mail or outlook address. I'll try adding it and see what happens. Quote from: patio on April 15, 2013, 06:34:42 PM Just wondering if you remembered to register ...i've seen this before. Good idea. I know I registered the computer with lenovo but not windows..You can register and sign up your MS account and e-mail all in one step. |
