Solve : Win 8 is doing odd things????

Answer»

greetings CH!

I have yet run into another issue that I've found puzzling. I decided to install windows 8 on my toshiba system and im happy! Computer runs great. However there are somethings that dont click.

First thing----> When i was installing drivers I installed Ati radeon HD 4250 mobile Driver and each time i boot up the machine i got a Runtime error stating this..

                                                                                            Microsoft Visual C++ runtime Library

Run Time error!

Program C:\Windows\System32\atibtmon.exe

this application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in a
unusual way.
please contact the applications support team for more info.

After i got this i went ninite.com and downloaded the latest JAVA Runtime envirment and i still get that error. i even reinstalled the driver.
im out of ideas at the moment. Am i missing Drivers? or some plugins? what would be causing this is mess up?
My system specs are as follows:

Windows 8 Pro
Toshiba satellite L645D PSK0QC-02007
AMD Athlon 2.2ghz 1mb L2 Cache
4Gb DDr3
500Gb 7200RPM seagate momentus Drive
Ati radeon 4250 HD mobile Graphics

Forgot.. One more thing.
I put the laptop to sleep by either clicking sleep or closing the lid, it will go to sleep and then wake up 5 seconds later.. whats going on?This will OCCUR if you got the vid driver from anywhere ELSE but Toshiba. Why does that happen? i got the driver directly from ATi cause the drivers that Toshiba usually offer are outdated and useless?? anything i can do to fix this issue?  Because laptops are very finicky about drivers...and the Manuf. write them specifically for each unit...no matter who's components are involved.
DLoad and install the drivers from the manuf. site then re-boot. Quote from: comda on APRIL 08, 2013, 12:00:33 PM

Mobile adapters are customized to each manufacturers specs.i didnt seem to have this issue when i ran windows 7. Thats what im confused about the most. I installed the same driver in 7 and it worked great! Quote from: comda on April 08, 2013, 03:04:17 PM

Windows 7 Drivers work best on Windows 7, and occasionally have issues with Windows 8. You might CONSIDER installing Windows 8 Drivers.

Solve : Windows8 forgotten password?

Answer»

I've been using XP for years but bought my mum a new vaio laptop with windows8. When we started up she had to enter a password that was so complicated she now cannot remember it. Consequently her xmas present is now a useless black plastic rectangle.

What are the options? I've googled a few things and it appears I can buy a $30 app to create a boot CD that will allow me to go through a complicated process. Could be a scam for $30 for all I know.
The other alternative I considered is to reformat the laptop back to windows XP. There might be a 32/64 bit problem there? Thanks for any useful suggestions. BTW I probably don't want to convert it to Linux.http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/forgot-windows-passwordIf the info at the link posted by Allan does not solve the problem, contact Sony and ask whether running of the recovery partition can started without logging in to Windows.  With a Compaq laptop that I bought in July 2007, hitting a key - as I recall, it was F11 - right after hitting the power button would launch the recovery procedure and allow the user to continue running the procedure and thereby restore the system to it's original configuration.

If this technique is not possible with the Sony VAIO, then ask Sony about getting a recovery disc on DVDs.  They may charge a fee for this but it will be probably quite small in comparison to buying an OS at retail price.  They will need to know the model # and serial # to get the correct disc, meaning the disc with device drivers for the specific model of computer.  Following up:- I visited Mum yesterday RESULTING in the following further actions:- The vaio laptop has a button labeled "ASSIST" which is adjacent to the on/off button. Using the assist button puts you into a troubleshooting menu and in that menu you can do a "full reset". The full reset seems to be the same as a reformat. Unfortunately I had to leave before it was completed as it took around 8 hours. Quote from: Allan on April 01, 2013, 05:25:45 AM

Here's what the link says - and my comments are included:-

What to do if you forget your Windows password

If you've forgotten your Windows password, there are several ways to retrieve or reset it:

If your PC is on a domain, your system administrator must reset your password.
NO I'M NOT ON A DOMAIN - I JUST BOUGHT A COMPUTER THAT I WANT TO USE.

If you're using a Microsoft account, you can reset your password online. For more info, go to the Microsoft account sign-in webpage.
NO I DON'T HAVE A MICROSOFT ACCOUNT - I JUST BOUGHT A COMPUTER THAT I WANT TO USE.

Have someone with an administrator account on the PC sign in and change your password for you. (If you have an administrator account and remember the administrator password, you can do this yourself.)
NO ONE HAS AN ADMINISTRATOR ACCOUNT ON THIS COMPUTER - I JUST BOUGHT IT FOR MY MUM.

If you're using a local account, use your password HINT as a reminder.
WINDOWS8 MADE US MODIFY HER USUAL PASSWORD SO MANY TIMES IT IS VIRTUALLY IMPOSSIBLE FOR HER TO RECALL IT.
If you've tried these suggestions and still can't sign in: .
I CAN'T "TRY" ANY OF THESE SUGGESTIONS AS THEY ARE'NT APPLICABLE.

If you have Windows 8, you'll need to reinstall Windows.
HOW DO I REINSTALL WINDOWS? IS THAT WHAT THE "FULL RESET" UNDER THE "ASSIST" BUTTON DOES?

If you have Windows RT, you'll need to contact your PC manufacturer.
I HAVE WINDOWS8 - I ASSUME WINDOWS RT IS SOMETHING DIFFERENT.
For more info about changing or resetting passwords, see Change your password. Quote from: dude1234 on April 01, 2013, 03:01:13 PM

Well, did you allow it to continue when you left?  What happened?  Did it finish?  If so, how long did it take in total?

By the way, 8 hours is an awfully long time.  This may be an indication of other issues.

I've seen some references which mention hitting F10 during startup to RUN the recovery partition.  See http://forum.notebookreview.com/sony/299699-sony-vaio-laptop-recovery-partition.html.  This may vary by model, so I can't guarantee it will work in your case.  If not, you need to do some research/inquiry.

And, again, that computer is under warranty, right?  Quote from: Allan on April 01, 2013, 03:04:18 PM

Allan, It would be misleading to lay all responsibility with the user (in this case, my mother). She had a password that she wanted to use. She can remember this password. She still remembers it. However, Windows made her modify the password into something so complicated that she did not remember it. Nor did I!

The initial password was something like this "sf6hy7V"........quite reasonable. Windows was not happy - firstly it told us the password was not long enough, so we made it ""sf6hy7Vxyz". Windows was still not happy - it told us we needed to mix in more capital letters, so we made it "Sf6hy7VxyZ". Windows was still not happy - it told us we needed to include some non standard characters, so we made it "Sf6hy#$%7VxyZ".

So I ask you - is it any wonder we cannot remember it!!!

Put it in perspective Allan, it's just a computer, not access to her bank account.

Telling someone how to make up a password is in my opinion an invasion of a person's civil liberties. If I wish to use "123" as a password, who are you to stop me? Quote from: soybean on April 01, 2013, 03:19:08 PM

Yes - it finished. I'll probably visit Mum again in 3 months but if possible I'll get my brother to pick it up for me before then and I'll work on it at home. I think in this case the "Assist" button replaces the usual process of entering the bios. I tried a few keys such as DEL, F8, F2, etc but it just booted normally. Warranty is something to consider but not usually my first choice. No offense intended, but all you have to do is write down the password when you create it. Blaming Windows (or any software) for requiring a strong password is merely shifting the blame. But okay, moving on. Hopefully the problem is now solved. None of this makes any sense whatsoever.  It's simply untrue; Windows DOES NOT force users to use such complex passwords.  It does not require use of "non standard characters".  And, a password such as sf6hy7V is not too short; that password is one character longer than the password I'm using with Windows 8.

Actually, Windows makes the password process easy when going through the initial setup of Windows on a new computer.  I just went through this twice about 2 months ago.  The user is asked to enter the enter the password and is also asked to create a reminder question.  In my case, I used the name of the first family pet I remember from childhood as my password and the reminder was "name of 1st pet".  It can't get much simpler than that. I've never seen those type of requests when setting a Windows password either. Quote from: patio on April 02, 2013, 09:05:45 AM
I've never seen those type of requests when setting a Windows password either.
Agree 100% with the above two posts.Yes, of COURSE, Allan and Patio are correct, none of this actually happened! Mum is using her computer as we speak. Dear old girl, she's doing a spot of cobol programming.I don't understand your response...
All i stated is i have never seen that procedure setting a Windows password...period.

Solve : Event Viewer not displaying inserted USB Memory Sticks?

Answer»

Hi, I'm trying to automate the backup of my memory STICKS as I'm starting to rely on them for storing my coursework on.
I have SYNCTOY set up, and was planning to use Task Scheduler and an EVENT to trigger this.
However, I can't find any event in Event Viewer to do with this. Google suggested DriverFrameworks-UserMode, but I've cleared that, re-inserted two different thumb drives several times and restarted the machine, and STILL nothing is appearing. I'm really confused and WOULD appreciate any advice,

Thanks,
James

Solve : Downgrade Windows 8 to Windows 7?

Answer»

Hi guys,

Is it possible to downgrade Windows 8 to Windows 7 without affecting my programs, documenst etc.? Windows 8 isn't so big problem for me, but on that OS my Nvidiga GeForce 8600 won't work with two monitors, so I must go back to Win 7. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance
Did your computer come with Windows 8 when it was new, or did you upgrade the OS from Win 7 to Win 8?  Is your computer a desktop or laptop/notebook?  If it's a desktop, what expansion slots are available?  Is the Nvidiga GeForce 8600 integrated into the motherboard or is it a card in an expansion slot?  What happens when you try to connect a second monitor? Keep in mind there are a few Win8 PC's that were sold that have no downgrade path to Win7...
I don't know of a method that will retain your apps...they normally need to be re-installed to run PROPERLY... Quote from: soybean on February 25, 2013, 08:01:15 AM

Desktop computer, with PCI & PCI Express slots, Windows 8 upgraded from 7. When I extend desktop to second monitor Windows act like there is everything ok, but on second monitor is only dark. Strange, Nvidia control panel detected both monitors, exact models. On Win 7 worked just fine.Perhaps driver update would solve the problem.  Have you visited NVidia's website to see whether they have a driver update for Windows 8?

I found an interesting article http://www.dual-monitor.biz/2011/09/14/windows-8-multi-monitor/.  Windows 8 provides some improved features for using multiple monitors.  I THINK I'd investigate further before downgrading back to Win 7. Quote from: soybean on February 25, 2013, 09:04:27 AM

I tried all possible SOLUTIONS related to that Nvidia card, but no success. It's driving me crazy. I wonder if a newer card would solve the problem.  Perhaps you should visit https://forums.geforce.com/ and start a discussion there, in addition to this one. I believe you'd want to post in the Legacy section there: https://forums.geforce.com/default/board/46/legacy/ Quote from: soybean on February 25, 2013, 09:19:51 AM

Solve : Error message on boot sequence??

Answer»

For about a month now I have been getting the following message when booting up: "checking media (fail)". This appears twice then a normal boot follows. I haven't noticed any problems with any hardware or software so this is more of an "annoyance" then an issue for now. I'm not sure how or why the problem started since I don't always stay next to the machine when it boots but it didn't exist when I first got it late last year.

I have contacted Dell and their solution is to re-install WIN 8 which I'm not quite ready to do yet since I don't think it would solve this. I have seen the same issue posted on various forums but so far no solution has been offered.

If anyone has experienced this I would appreciate getting some feedback on whether there is a fix or not and on what is causing this.

Thanks.

Dell Inspiron 5520
Win 8 (64 bit)Check to SEE if there is a "floppy SEEK at boot up" option in the BIOS...if there is disable it.
Believe it or not even many new PC's still have this in the BIOS and floppy drives have almost disappeared.
I have no idea why Dell would suggest what they did  as it has nothing to do with the OS itself...silly.Win8 uses UEFI and the only thing I noticed was that there is a line that has the following:

              mSATA Device            Not detected

I'm not sure what this means but I'm doing some research.....

Check the BIOS/UEFI settings and see if network or PXE is listed under boot order. If so, move it to start after the hard drive or disable it. The "media check failure" or "media test failure, check cable" message is often caused by network boot trying to start when there is no network (ethernet) cable plugged in.

I agree, if the message appears before the 'starting windows' message, reinstalling windows will almost certainly not fix it.Thanks for the answer.
Network or PXE is not listed in the UEFI settings.
On the other hand I got a call from a Dell tech who told me that they are working on trying to figure out what causes the message but I don't really know if they will get back to me anytime soon.
I'll keep looking around for a solution. If their suggestion to re-install Win8 to fix a boot error message is any indication i wouldn't wait for that phone call myself...
Contact the MBoard Manuf. and you may get better results...A Dell tech did call me and after some time on the phone we determined that the issue is indeed with the boot sequence. In the UEFI boot the first items displayed are:
     UEFI Onboard LAN IPv4
     UEFI Onboard LAN IPv6
     Windows Boot Manager
and it seems that the first 2 items need a network connection which isn't yet available thus the "error" messages.

In the settings I had to change the boot mode to "legacy secure boot off" instead of UEFI boot mode. After restarting I went into the setup where I found the following order:
     Network
     Hard Drive
     CD/DVD/CD-RW Drive

I changed the order to put Network last (couldn't disable it as Dell suggested); after rebooting once more I went back into the settings and change the boot option back to "UEFI secure boot on" and that solved the problem.

Below are the instructions that Dell sent me if that helps. Good luck!!!

I would like to confirm if you can connect via network(NIC/LAN) using the machine.
ALSO, as a workaround here is what I can suggest for now
(Choose boot order while in Legacy boot setting):

1. Go to One Time Boot menu (F12)
2. Select Change Boot Mode Setting then choose Legacy Boot Secure boot off or on
3. Go to One Time Boot menu (F12) again and select  Enter Setup
4. Choose Boot tag and Legacy Boot should be selected.
5. Make sure that hard drive comes first on the list. If Network is appearing, select it and choose disable.
Save setup and restart the computer.

Glad you are fixed up and Thanx for posting back with the solutions...

Solve : Dual Boot Windows 8 on top of Windows 7?

Answer»

I am having a little bit of an issue installing windows 8 on a different partition on my hard drive. Every time I try, I get an error saying that one or more dynamic drives have been created on this hard drive. So Windows 8 can not install on this particular partition... So I'm STUCK... I have tried pretty much everything and have got no where. I am REALLY good with computers and there really isn't ANYTHING that gets me stuck while working with them, but for some reason I'm stuck on this particular problem... If you could help me out, that would be AWESOME. I have been trying for the past week now to figure out something to do to get Windows 8 to install so I can dual boot it with my Windows 7 OS... I just want to check Windows 8 out and I really don't want to do it thru a virtualization program that also slows down the process of my computer...No need to double post...

However SINCE the other one is over-sized fonts and electric blue i'll remove that one instead.

Solve : Windows 8 and SD card with photos; help before husband throws the computer out?

Answer»

I got my husband a new laptop for Christmas and it has Windows 8.  It's driving my husband (and me) crazy.  My husband has a SD CARD of photos from a game trail camera.   With his old laptop he could just put the SD card in his computer and flip through the images by hitting the side to side arrow keys.  For the life of us we cant figure this out on the new computer.  What are we doing wrong... hopefully someone can help us and also explain this is very BASIC simple terms   Thank you.First of all, Does the PC do anything when you insert the card?

Don't feel bad. Other people are finding similar problems with looking at photos NON Windows 8. Here are two items you may WANT to read.

Simple now means hard. They say...
Quote

...The Windows 8 desktop’s photo-management tools offer more control than the Start screen’s Photos app, but they have one drawback: Unlike the Photos app, the desktop’s Photo Viewer shows only photos stored on your own computer. To see photos stored elsewhere, you need to visit that site, be it on Facebook, SkyDrive, or Flickr, for EXAMPLE...

But there is more and more...
http://www.pcworld.com/article/2013989/windows-8-deep-dive-get-to-know-your-photos-app.html
This is almost funny...
Quote
... you'll find Photos, a media management app designed by Microsoft to make it easy for you to view photos and videos from disparate devices and social networks in one central location.  ...
Does that help any? If so, can you explain it to me?

If you break up with you Husband, I can not help.
I am happily married to my first wife.

Solve : Win 8 Pro crashing all the time!?

Often once a day, the computer is blue screening.

Here are the last 3 logs from WhoCrashed. I have no idea what's causing these crashes and I TRIED googling but found so many different answers that I'm BAFFLED!

Solve : sync time when connected to internet?

hi,

how do I sync time to ntp server whenever I logged in, only if I'm connected to internet?

Windows 8 Pro 32-bitWhat is the question?
When you are on the Internet it is automatic. About once every five days.
Do you WANT more frequent updates of the click?
Is the CLOCK not working?
Does your work require better accuracy?

Do you need to update the clock without then Internet?
If the answer to the last question is YES, then you need an external device to update the clock.  Radio clocks TIED to the US time are available for a price. With some RESEARCH lyou can keep the cost down.

Europe also has Atomic Clocks

my windows time is not correctly shown probably due to mobo battery - have to manually sync with ntp server each time logging in after booting into windows.

maybe a startup script?

It can also lead to more issues such as not being able to boot properly.

Solve : trouble updating drivers?

Answer»

hi,

i have an ASUS sabertooth 990fx rev 1, with an 8-core bulldozer and an amd xfx 6850 graphics card 16gb ram. on win 8 and all latest updates.

running great for months, just tried to update the drivers, as usual, from the asus website, and they wont INSTALL properly, :

chipset error - says installs with errors
audio driver - wont install says `the configuration registry database is corrupt', and or : error 0x000003F1. The sound then only plays through the TV speakers!

I restored it and its fine on the older drivers ....

any ideas?

thanks jools  My guess is it doesn't need the updates...
New drivers are not always proper drivers...
If everything is running fine i'd leave things be....
But that's just me. Quote from: blippy on January 18, 2013, 09:55:42 AM

Think about what you wrote there and you will know what to do (or not do).
i restored the pc and re-installed- - but only installing the drivers which were definitely outdated (most were an over-install of the same), the graphics is a lot better too.

Overclocking with the new Amd catayst MANAGER i get 4.75 - 4.9 mhz rock solid with the turbo-core on.  No overheating problems at all. Thats with the 8-core bulldozer (bus speed 250 and with advanced system care 6 power plan enabled).

Thks,Geek. Here's the thing; I didn't destroy any restore points. I purchased the PC on Dec.14/12,set it up Dec.15 and stated loading on Dec.16. Dec.16 is the day that the file was downloaded and failed. A restore point was not made on that day. Another thing; I found the failed download when snooping through the PC in "View Update History". Had I not gone there I would not have known that it failed.
Also now when I go to "View Update History" I'm told that I have not installed any updates and the page is blank. The only way that I can find whether an update has failed is to go to "Installed Updates" and find the files that do not have the option to "Uninstall". Beside the failed file that I previously mentioned there are also 5 other files that I'm unable to uninstall. These files were installed before the date that I purchased the PC.

1)Microsoft Office -  installed  09/01/2013
(2,3,4 and 5)    Microsoft Windows - installed 11/10/2012

The way that I see this, the big problem is not so much Restore Points as it is the inability to remove and reinstall failed updates. Although it's not possible, even if I somehow would have had a Restore Point previous to 11/10/12 what's to say the that once these were reinstalled(if critical) they would not fail again? Then what? They recommend to have updates installed automatically but do not notify of failure and obviously there's no way to predict ONE. So from what I've been able to find it's either deny all updates or put up with some failures.

I'm even starting to wonder how important these failed updates are? I wonder how many kazillion PC's are out there with failed updates that people don't even know about?

Since running into this with Win8 I decided to check the updates on my other PC with Vista. Sure enough there's a few failed updates on that one too from long ago. Really wondering if it's worth the effort? overthehill

Solve : Windows 8 installation?

Answer»

I have a COMPAQ 615 laptop, currently running Win 7. Wanting to upgrade to Win 8 PRO, I successfully downloaded Win 8 which took about 5 hours. The installation seemed to go fine, but then I got the message "installation was unsuccessful, restoring your previous version". (Which it did). No explanation about the failed install. How do I get past this? Must I start the download all over again, or can I just redo the install process? I have already paid for the download and don't feel like paying again! Did you run the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant first? Run that first; it will give a list of software that needs to be uninstalled before upgrading, software you will have to reinstall, and any other things that are known to CAUSE problems. Look at the manufacturer's website (in this CASE HP) for your model and see if there are upgrade instructions from the manufacturer as well.

You should be able to reuse the download and redo the install process, but like I said first CHECK the manufacturer site and the Upgrade Assistant. Also if the DLoad took 5 hours you may want to grab a fresh one from someone with a high speed connection...common errors in the install with funky DLoads would be a CRC error for example.
The key you purchased will work on any new DLoad.Yes, I used the Upgrade Assistant. I have now been able to install. I think the problem is that during the download, the Assistant gave a message "Feel free to use your PC". So I assumed I could also do this during the installation - oops, wrong. So I closed every app in sight before doing the installation, and it worked.

Though I'm not overly excited by the new OS!
Thanks again.Good to hear you got it running...

Problem.

I've been attempting to boot from the DVD with no success. I've set the boot order( as shown in the attachment, which I hope you can see). When the PC boots up I'm shown " hit any key to boot from CD/DVD". When key hit is shows Windows Loading Files?. Once completed, it shows Windows Loading (with what appears to be three colored dots). Then the system FREEZES. If key not hit it goes into Windows as normal.Obviously something/somewhere is not properly set,but what?
I've backed up this system using Macrium Reflect and have been trying to boot from the rescue disk.
I've also tried the Paragon rescue disk with the same results.

I backed up my other systems XP and Vista without any hiccups, but no joy with 8.

Any help would be much APPRECIATED.overthehill

UPDATE.

After resetting start-up to default(which is to boot to HD 1st) and resetting boot order to boot from CD/DVD 1st , now when I boot up I'm shown a message(in red box) that states.

Secure Boot Violation.
Invalid Signature Detected
Check Secure Boot Policy in Setup.

I went to Authentication on same screen and it's set as follows.

System Boot State ---  User
System Boot Mode State --- Enabled

Secure Boot ---{Enabled}
Secure Boot Mode --- {Standard}
Default Key Provisioning ---{Enabled}

Any idea if any of this should be changed or any other ideas would sure be appreciated. overthehill
Since you have come this far here's how to disable it::

Quote

Enter the computer's firmware utility by pressing Del during the initial stages of the boot process (before any boot loader appears). Some computers use other keys for this purpose; examine your early boot-time messages or read your computer's MANUAL to learn what to use.
If you're configured to boot in EZ Mode, press F7 to enter Advanced Mode.
    Click the Boot tab.
Click Security Boot Parameters near the bottom-left of the screen. (It's conceivable you'll need to scroll down to see this on some systems.)
Change OS Type from Windows 8 UEFI to Other Legacy & UEFI. The Secure Boot Mode and Key Management options should disappear.
Press the F10 key to save your changes and reboot the computer.

It can be re-enabled after you have finished your tasks.Thks, patio for responding. I get into setup pressing the delete tab. (Now here's where I'm lost.) Whether or not it's configured to EZ Mode I don't know? Pressing F7 doesn't work. When in setup I see Advanced on the same line (up top) as Boot Options. Is that the Advanced Mode? If it is there are no options as you have described below(Click Security Boot Parameters etc.etc.)

Being brand new to Win 8 I did some Googling and found an "Advanced Start up" option.
This states; "Start up from a device or disc(such as USB or DVD), change your PC's firmware settings, change Windows start up settings, or restore Windows from a system image".
This will restart your PC.  RESTART NOW !

Is this an option? Having no real back up for this PC I'm leery of clicking that button. Need your guidance. Thks., overthehill

1) "Disabled" Secure Boot
2) Launch CSM to "Always"

Solve : Brightness issues after bootup?

Answer»

Hi, not sure if this is correct section, but here GOES.

I have a new pc (maybe 2 months old)

This morning i booted the pc up. All went fine, then i saw desktop bootup for about 2 seconds before the screen went blank.  I rebooted a few times. Each time i see the desktop for a second or so before it goes black.
One thing i noticed after a while. The screen doesn`t actually go black, but in-fact, very very Dark. If i focus really hard i can just about make out my desktop in the background. Not enough to read anything, or control my cursor, but i can definatley make out icons, also when i right click my mouse i can see a faint "square"  where the option window will have opened from right clicking my mouse.

I`m presuming its a graphics issue, but i`m not certain. Any ideas?1) What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?

2) What happens when you boot to safe mode? Quote from: gazman on January 04, 2013, 07:47:38 AM

This sounds very much like an LCD monitor backlight issue. You have in fact described the process for checking for this. If you shine a strong lamp or a flashlight on the screen and you can see the desktop then I would very strongly suspect this. If you can connect ANOTHER monitor and it works then that would be proof.
Ok. Allan.

Nothing at all is new. I shut it down last night after browsing the web "bbc sport" to be exact.

I`ve tried to boot into bios and safe mode, each time after 1 second or so the screen goes Dark.

Salmon. Yes, i too am beginning to think it`s a monitor issue. If i turn my monitor off and on, each time i will see my desktop for a second before it goes dark.

I`ll grab a monitor from somewhere and plug it in to see. If it is a case of a dodgy backlight, is that a new monitor? or is it repairable?

THANKS for the speedy responses.Yes, if it happens in safe mode I completely agree with Salmon Trout Quote from: gazman on January 04, 2013, 08:30:31 AM

Monitor backlights can be replaced, but if the monitor is old and/or small screen size then the cost can exceed the value of the monitor and even approach pr equal the cost of a new one. Especially if you lack the skill to replace it yourself and would need to take it to a repair shop. You must do some research.

You should be aware that the problem may not be the actual lamp but possibly associated electronic circuitry, and without proper test equipment and expertise you could easily BUY the wrong things and waste money that could be put towards a new monitor or a working used one. LCD monitors have got a lot cheaper recently.

Solve : {Help Request} - Can't get past login scree?

Answer»

Hi I'm having trouble getting past my login screen..

First of all, I installed AVG 2013 internet security. while setting that up, it kkept popping up with 'Threat Detected' coming from C:/users/cham/%appdata%/roaming/microsoft/windows_update.exe

I kept CLICKING ignore, thinking that it is not a virus.. then I restarted my laptop..

To which after the login screen I got a error message: "cannot find location c:/users/cham/%appdata%/roaming/microsoft/windows_update.exe"

So that was obvious that avg still managed to delete it..

I managed to find the windows 8 recovery window from boot.. and tried a system restore.

After that I got a new error after the login screen:

If I click continue / Quit.. it just shows a BLACK screen and wont change no matter how long I leave it

I tried to run in safe mode.. and it gave the same error message, with the same reactions to the continue and quit buttons.

I tried a system refresh - but that just ends up saying "there was a problem refreshing your pc. No changes were made.

I have no other system restore dates to go back to, only the one..

Tried Automatic Repair and it just said it cannot repair windows.

I don't know what else to do, if possible I want to be able to repair this without loosing everything. :|

Please help

THANK you in advance.

Do you have the Windows 8 Installation Disc or System Recovery Media. You can boot off Windows 8 disc and PERFORM repair installation -or- if you have System Recovery Media CD's or DVD's or Thumb Drive with restore image on it you can boot off of this and perform Repair Recovery Installation saving all your data from being deleted. Both of these methods WOULD fix windows issues.
The info tells me that a Windows Update was at some point in time interrupted...
Look at the list of updates in safe mode and re-do say the last 3 or 4 of them...disable AVG until this is finished.
When you re-boot login and all other functions should be back to normal... Quote from: Chammiez on January 03, 2013, 10:52:15 PM

That's almost certainly a virus or something else malicious. The legitimate Windows Update would NEVER be in that location.
I agree with DaveLembke on this. Repair Install would be the fastest way to fix this if you can backup your data.

if you encounter problem upgrading, skip upgrading/migrating application, only migrate personal data I'm only trying to get it to RUN for about thridy days till we become famiular with it.  Not upgrade this unit.  If I can't get it working I'll just do a fresh install of windows 7. I'm going to TRY wipeing 7 off maybe cause, it is curppted but, I don't know

[year+ OLD attachment deleted by admin]The windows 8 Firewall service emcompasses more than just Windows Firewall; It's basically required for Windows 8 to work properly.

If you don't want the Firewall functionality of the service, the proper way to DISABLE it is to go into the Firewall Control PANEL Applet, and set domain, public, and private PROFILES all to "off".

Also, which process is using the cpu when it's spiking?well it was windows firewall service, when I stopped the windows firewall service, the cpu level would go down, I had no other firewall installed, when I found the problem, its 100% windows firewall, if you have not worked it out yet, windows firewall does a lot more now, so there's going to be more problems in windows 8, why they could not have made a other service, I don't know.. so right now im having to use a other firewall, to get round this problem..

Solve : KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE?

Answer»

Hi there, I've just got my new Dell XPS One up and running on Windows 8. I thought a TV Tuner might be nice, so ordered one from Dell at the same time. It's a WinFast Dongle Gold. I have installed it OK, but when I open it, my PC is not happy and shuts down for a restart, saying there a 'KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE'. Everything else is operating with no problems, so it's obviously that program it doesn't like.

Any suggestions WOULD be GRATEFULLY received. Thanks.Does it officialy support windows 8? Are there official drivers for it that run on windows 8?

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/hardware/jj569891(v=vs.85).aspx

It seems to be a DRIVER error, often caused by changes between MISMATCHED OS/driver target versions.

Do you have more details on the STOP code? (it should have 4 numbers in parentheses after the code somewhere; the first 0xsomething might give more insight into the cause of the crash.)Ah, now that's interesting! I would have assumed that as a Dell rep sold it to me it would be compatible. I will go and do a search and see if there's a newer driver.I have uninstalled and tried to reinstall it and it doesn't follow through to the end .... after 20 minutes it was still going.

I have uninstalled it again and tried to find a new driver for it and have come up with this one: http://drivers.downseeker.com/download/238273/leadtek-winfast-dtv-dongle-dual-device-driver-10.12.20.1/ , but there doesn't seem to have an .exe file in there and is only 56kb.

I'm a bit befuddled. The DISC I got with it says it is OK for Windows 7, but I have a brand new Windows 8 computer. I have Googled that and the link above is all I can find.Do you have a more specific model# for the device?

I recommend you get drivers from this page, NOT any other site (assuming I'm correct and this, Leadtek, is the manufacturer):
http://www.leadtek.com/eng/support/download.aspxI have been in to Leadtek and got a driver download, but a message popped up saying not to install this driver until you have installed the product. I have had to be elsewhere today, but will attack it again tomorrow. I joined the Leadtek forum, but have had no email back from them.

It's a curly one.

Thanks very much for your input TechnoGeek.

Solve : device connected select program menu on system startup?

Answer»

I am running Windows 8 Professional and using an Intel CS630-XP Webcam that I made Compatible with XP in Windows 8 as I did previously in Windows 7.

I have been trying 2 different OCR Programs, Abby Fine Reader and Omnipage. Initially every time my Computer started since Installing them it showed 2 Menu Pop Ups ( while the PC is still loading) that show Device Connected for my Intel CS630 Webcam Storage with a Choice to SELECT a Program to use for it, showing  Abby Fine Reader or Omnipage as the
Choices. Why I get 2 Menu Screens, I have no idea. I don't wish to use either so I click Cancel on each Menu each time. There is no choice in the Menu to choose None or dismiss them so that they don't come back again on the Next Start up.

In an effort to find out what is triggering the 2 Menus on Start up in order to stop them from occurring, I have checked all My Start Up and Start Menu Folders and have been unable to find any reference to them.

I have checked both the Abby Fine Reader and Omnipage Programs for an Option to stop the Menu's on start up, no luck.

I have run Tuneup Utilities,TASKMANAGER Start up, Win Patrol, CCleaner Normal Mode and on Start up, Hijack this Normal Mode and on Start up,Process Explorer, I have searched with JV16 for Registry Entries by NAME and checked all Logs including my Spyshelter Log. No Luck.

I have checked in Services and Group Policies besides checking out many Start up Programs Websites. I haven't still have been unable to find what is triggering the Select Program Menu for my Intel CS630 Webcam as yet to stop them from starting up with my PC.

I did rename, then delete the icm10blk.sys Image Storage Driver in Windows/System 32/drivers which removed the 2 entries (Abby Fine Reader and Omnipage) that were there to select from but the Menu still comes back, although empty now, each time on start up. I think its a registry entry but which one ? or its built into the .exe or .sys file. I ran Resource Hacker on CS630-XP.exe but it showed nothing relevant.

I have never had a problem with Start ups that I couldn't solve before but this one is giving me fits.

Does anyone know how I can stop those Select Program Menu's from occurring on Start up, or a way that I can add Select none to the Menu's to choose which may stop them ?

I hope someone can figure it out. They have a trigger but where is it, and how do I stop it ?

Wayne

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]I hid all Microsoft Services in MSCONFIG unchecked the top half of other services rebooted, same thing. I unchecked the bottom half and rebooted , same thing.

It is whatever triggers a menu to select a program for my Intel CS630 webcam that is the problem. After renaming icm10blk.sys the entries to select are gone but I am still getting the context menu popups on startup, Sometimes 1, often 2 of them and occasionally now 3 of them. Now it says no device description at the top of the  menus instead of CS630 Image Storage, so its whatever triggers those "device connected" menus that I need to stop on startup.

Wayne Download and run Mike Lin's Startup CONTROL Panel (http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml). Since it is likely a startup program as opposed to a service that is calling for the webcam, you'll find this little app much easier to deal with. You'll probably be able to identify the process by name, but if not it's simple enough to disable and re-enable individual or multiple startup items simply by unchecking / checking them.that program gave me a $INFTool.Tmp not found error. I am running Windows 8. I had to make it compatible with Windows XP Service pack 3 and run as Administrator to make it work. It only showed me my normal startups nothing related to my Intel CS630 Webcam. Did you read what I posted about all the startup programs I have tried already ? I also ran Autoruns program awhile ago.

Here is my Autoruns text relating to Intel below.

Note

I previously did rename, then delete the icm10blk.sys Image Storage Driver in Windows/System 32/drivers which removed the 2 entries (Abby Fine Reader and Omnipage) that were there to select from the startup device connected Menus

I renamed the iaStorV.sys in system32/drivers and am still getting the same thing happening which is why it is not found in the Autoruns text below.

X "iaStorV"   ""   ""   "File not found: D:\Windows\System32\Drivers\iaStorV.sys"   ""
+ "ICM10USB"   "Intel(r) PC Camera CS630 Driver"   "Intel Corporation"   "d:\windows\system32\drivers\icm10usb.sys"   "2001-10-05 7:00 PM"
+ "AVI Maker"   "Intel Digital Video Camera AVI Maker"   "Intel Corporation"   "d:\windows\system32\icm10avi.ax"   "2001-10-05 6:57 PM"

Those are all the entries related to Intel other than the Intel raid driver which should not affect it.

I got rid of the selection entries as you can see by the attachments attached, now I still need to get rid of the menus that startup on start by finding whatever triggers those menus when a device is connected re: my Intel CS630. My experience with computers tells me that as they do not show up In any of the many startup programs I have tried what ever triggers those menus is either hidden from them, built into an exe or sys file or a registry entry.

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]Why not uninstall both apps ? ?
They either don't like Win8 or need to be re-installed.I need the apps they aren't the problem. Whatever triggers the menus on start up is what I need to stop ...

Solve : Windows 8 Downgrade issue?

Answer»

I bought an Asus K55 and wish to downgrade from WINDOWS 8 to windows 7 with a windows 7 Home Premium upgrade disk. I went through the installation process, but upon reboot, I get a screen telling me that a driver was corrupted, or something of that manner. Upon attempting to install it again, I notice that on the first screen of Operating System installation, after choosing a custom install, and choosing the partition to install to, I notice that after choosing the proper partition, I get an error saying that the disk order installation is incorrect for the GPT. It also GIVES me error code 0x8003002 which I have not been able to find any relevant to online.

On the error screen that comes up when the computer restarts in the middle of windows 7 installation says:

A recent hardware or software change might have installed a FILE that is signed incorrectly or damage, or that might be malicious software from an unknown source.

Of you have a windows installation disc, insert the disc and restart your computer. Click Repair your Computer," and then choose recovery tool.

Otherwise, to start windows so you can investigate further, press the ENTER key to display the boot menu, press F8 for Advanced Boot Options, and select Last Known Good. If you understand why the digital signature cannot be verified and want to start windows without this file, temporarily disable driver signature enforcement.

File: \$WINDOWS.~BT\Windows\system32\winload.efi

Status: 0xc0000428

Info: The digital signature for this file couldn't be verified.

That's all the information I have for this issue that I know to be relevant. If you can help me, I thank you very much.Have you already done the research on this?

As y0u see, there is too much information about downgrade.

Can you indicate winch method you are using? Do you have an image of your system before you tried the downgrade? If so, you may have to restore and try again.I wonder if a Windows 7 Home Premium upgrade disk is the right medium to use on a Windows 8 system?
Some netbooks lately are tied to their OS that it's sold with...i'd contact Acer.

The only info i could find on this is it will take Win7...but it needs to be the Ultimate ver. Please delete this as resolved. Please, can you share what you did?  I thought I did something, but it turns out that the problem I am having is with the computer using GPT instead of MBR. The Quote

File: \$WINDOWS.~BT\Windows\system32\winload.efi
Is on the Windows disk that I'm trying to install not working properly with the... something.
And just now my friend tells me that UEFI won't allow me to install Windows 7.
I don't like Windows 8
I don't like Microsoft.

edit: figuring out something with the unsigned driver on the disk I'm using might do... something.
I don't know how I would get the computer to recognize the driver as signed.

He is misinformed.

The problem could be that you are using a Windows 7 Upgrade Disk. Which is- as it's name suggests- for UPGRADING to Windows 7. Jokes at Windows 8's expense aside, you can't upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 7. Windows 7 can only be upgraded from Windows Vista.

The only way to install Windows 7 with that disk would be to First Install Windows Vista. Or, get a Win7 Retail Disc rather than the Upgrade disk. I'm not really sure how you got as far in the process as you did- perhaps there is something about the Win7 Upgrade process that I don't understand myself.

Ideally, when installing an older OS than one currently installed, You should be completely wiping the disk of all partitions that are present, rather than trying to install Windows 7 over top of Windows 8. Another thing to change is the BIOS setting. You can turn off UEFI and use the older EFI interface on every system I've seen- (I BELIEVE that providing the option to not use UEFI is part of the UEFI specification). This might be labelled "Legacy BIOS" or "Legacy Boot".

Solve : Yet again Store and Apps are failing?

Answer»

Even after a clean re-install of Windows this problem has returned: first I could not install apps from the STORE, then the Store itself would not open.

Without success I have tried

running the Store Trouble Shooter --- it reports such things as Store configuration may be damaged, cache may be corrupted but it cannot repair them

running SFC/SCANNOW which did not find any ERRORS in the Registry

There is another CMD scan & fix which may RESTORE the system to health if it finds a problem ---- I cannot REMEMBER it now (I thought the problem was finished with!)

What do I do now?

Solve : Fix Negative Disp[lay in Windows 8.1?

Answer»

I am WORKING on a friends computer. It is a recent Gateway tower with Windows 8.1 installed. I have yet to find out why she can not get to the Internet. But I created another problem.

Because I have low-vision, I tried the ease of access in Windows 8.1 to help me. Well, that was a mistake. The display went NEGATIVE and now I can not get it back to normal after hours to trying.

This has been document, other PEOPLE have complained. Microsoft says there is an easy way to get it back to normal. Not ture. Or else I don't understand what the are saying.

I do not think the issue is unique to the Gateway desktop.
Is there a way to get Wijnd0ws 8.1 back to normal display?
Have you tried this?

Open Appearance Settings by CLICKING the Start button Picture of the Start button and then clicking Control Panel.

In the search box, type window color, and then click Change window colors and metrics.

Under Basic and High Contrast Themes, deselect the high-contrast color scheme that you accidentally selected.
Thanks, I will tty that. You can run MiniToolbox to find problems why internet cannot be accessed.

Please download MiniToolBox to Desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following boxes:

    • Flush DNS
    • Report IE Proxy Settings
    • Reset IE Proxy Settings
    • List content of Hosts
    • List IP Configuration
    • Lst Last 10 Event Viewer Errors
    • List Users, Partitions and Memory Size
    • [/b]
Click Go and copy/paste the log (Result.txt) into your next post.
Thanks Dave.  I did download the tool you mentioned. However, I fixed the problem another way.
I came across a place where Windows say I could refresh or repair the PC. Did that, and the internet STARED working again.
Again, thanks. I will use the Tool Box on another PC.

Solve : Start Screen, Apps, and Programs Freezing on Windows 8.1?

    Answer»

I started having a number of problems recently on my Asus laptop, which is running Windows 8.1:

--When navigating to the Start Screen and trying to click on one of the apps (for example, the Maps program), the system immediately freezes and can't be recovered unless I use Ctrl-Alt-Del and sign out, then sign in again

--Unable to shut down the computer as I normally did in the past: sweeping the mouse from the right, clicking Settings-->Power-->Shut Down.  The system again freezes or doesn't open these options when attempted.

--Certain desktop SHORTCUTS no longer work: I double click on one of them and nothing happens (program won't open).  The same with hyperlinks in word documents; just recently they worked fine, but now when clicked they won't navigate to the webpage.  Recently I had to re-install Adobe Flash Player, but when I click on the .exe file it won't EXECUTE.  Opening Windows Media Player or some other programs is the same: they freeze or don't open at all.

The problems probably started within the last 1-2 weeks or so, and may have coincided with the most recent Windows update (KB3074219).

I can still browse the Internet and use other basic functions, but I'm wondering what might be causing all these ISSUES suddenly to occur at once, and how to fix them?  I do not RECALL installing any new software recently or making any notable changes to the system, so I'm at a loss as to the cause.   I have also seen some note about "Task Host Window" preventing shutdown or signing out.  Not entirely SURE what that means.

     I appreciate the help.

Solve : *censored* PLEASE HELP FPS ISSUES?

    Answer»
I bought a new computer about a year ago off of cyberpower.
    Specs-
    GeForce GTX 760ti
    AMD 8320 8 core processor
    8 GB ram
    64 bit os
    Windows 8

After USING this new, what I thought was an acceptable computer for a few months I was so happy and satisfied with my purchase and could run any game I really wanted on exceptional FPS. But about 2-3 months ago I started getting severe FPS drops for about 30 SECONDS to 1 minute at a time, and after this short lag spike I come back to fine FPS. For example - If I tried playing Counter Strike Global Offensive (CSGO - a source engine easy to run game ) I get this problem about once every around 3 rounds. It is making games BASICALLY unplayable with friends and is ONE of the most frustrating things that has ever happened to me. I've factory reset the computer twice and I currently have nothing downloaded but steam games, skype, and teamspeak. Yet I still get the problem, so if anybody could help I'd seriously appreciate it. If possible I'd like to find a way to not have to spend any more money because I already invested 1400$.You did not mention what Hard drive you are using.

Solve : New(possibly old) Windows update causing freezing, crashing, and slow overall perf?

    Answer»

So me being FORGETFUL,I think I saw a windows update a couple weeks back, saying that it would install itself once the computer was shut down,if not done manually(this has no relevance to the problem, just some background information).I don't usually shut down my computer(I know that's not good) so a couple days ago when I did actually decide to shut it down it started downloading the update. This could be JUST coming out or from what I saw a while ago I have no clue. However when downloading,it took over 2 hours to complete and when booting onto the desktop nothing would load for 40+ minutes. When trying to get onto some of my games everything freezes and doesn't respond.Eventually everything goes back to normal, only a very frustrating hour and a half later, with problems still occurring when trying to open a program/double clicking something fast(ie:clicking speaker VOLUME twice, only to freeze the whole computer for 20+ seconds). My HARDWARE is decently old for those of you who were wondering at this point(2012) but I really don't think it would have anything to do with that, considering my load times were very good(or at LEAST good enough for me) before the update.I've searched recent windows 8 update problems and haven't found people having the same problems close enough to mine to say that what's going on with my computer is a common thing.Any help would be great, thanks!

Solve : HELP Windows created a huge system reserved partition (35.7 GB) on my SSD?

    Answer»

Hello, I own a Sandisk sdssdp-128g-g25 and I cloned my windows install with Easeus.
I have discovered today that Windows created F: (System Reserved) on my SSD that is 35.7GB.
How do I delete the partition or at LEAST reduce the ALLOCATED space?
http://gyazo.com/c5de9ff7312ff8c1a4d0fa73baea3812 image of my drivesFrom HDD to  SSD?
The standard Easeus partition tool was not made for SSD.  But you did not say which tool and what method  you used. The fact that you got a huge recovery partition suggests  you did a misstep.Did you read over information about how to migrated the Windows OS  to Solid State Drive?
They have a forum you could have checked.
    http://forum.easeus.com/viewtopic.php?t=22119
One poster there suggests it is better to install the OS directly to the SSD and later install the application programs to either SSD or HDD as desired. IMO that is a safer choice.
I followed this Lifehacker guide: http://lifehacker.com/5837543/how-to-migrate-to-a-solid-state-drive-without-reinstalling-windowsThat reference looks good. Here is a equate:
    Quote

In step three, you'll WANT to click on your Windows partition and clone only that to the SSD instead of cloning the entire DISK. Cloning the entire disk would bring all your partitions over, which you won't likely have ROOM for.
It seems that is what you did.

Oh darn, so I wasn't supposed to pull all the partition over? I didn't realize that when I cloned it and also cloned the system reserved partition.
    1. What should I do now? (other than a clean install because I formatted that already)
    2. What causes a 350mb partition to jump into a 35.7GB partition? When I first installed it, C: was a complete partition over the SSD.Resize the partitions with EaseUS Partition Master, MiniTool Partition Wizard or Aomei Partition Assistant.

Solve : What do you do if fails to install windows updates every time??

    Answer»

When I FIRST LOG onto my COMPUTER it says I NEED to install Windows updates.  But when I go to "updates and recovery" it says I have it set to automatically install windows updates.  So then I click on "view your UPDATE history" and it shows a long list of updates that have all failed to install.  If I click the "install" button it tries to install them but it fails in the process.

Any idea why my Windows 8 keeps failing to install updates?  Is there anything I can do to fix this?It could be that you may not have any more room on the hard drive to receive them. Check to see how much free space you have. This also happens with a non legit Win install...It says I got 853 gigabites free of disk space.

It should be a legit install of Windows 8 - my grandpa bought this computer new with it already installed a few years ago.  In "view your update history" it shows a long list of updates and almost all of them failed to install except three things.  On 8-13-19 two things installed successfully.  So it's not that all of them are failing to install - just the vast majority of them.

Any other ideas what could cause them to fail to update?

    Solve : About checking first?

    Answer»

It is stated very well why the group makes a request to check first to see if the QUESTION has been asked before. This is a common request in " community forums " as well as computer help forums which I belong to three or at least I once belonged to three computer help forum but I suspect that with inactivity comes excommunication from time to time and i THINK that there can be an interesting discussion about policies like that and have both sides PRESENT their reasoning behind their policy.

That said I'd like to ask how one best goes about searching for a similar question? Clearly certain questions are almost obvious in nature but I was thinking about the time spent looking for " like " questions vs just posting them. I imagine that the regulares here who have seen it all can identify one of those " already asked umteen times types of question and perhaps they can just ignore the question and allow someone else who isn't upset or concerned with the repeat question to simply answer it.

It's been months if not years since I signed in here and it is not because I've figured everything out on my own or that I found a better place to ask my questions and read what is on others minds. As my doctor said not so long ago " this age change doesn't seem to suit you very well " and what he meant was that I surely have a lot more complaints than I had during my last decade. That said, I look around and it seems to me that the world is changing quickly and there are way more people complaining about this or that tha there was prior to the millennium change.I'm sure that can be discussed elsewhere. I've just gotten infected with the new world and the politics of politics.

I really like(d) this group and a few members used to message me from time to time to say hello or to ask a question specific to things that I have posted. Now I wonder if those member are still here or moved on in one way or another?

I posted this in the Win 8 category because I got this great deal on a Win 8 laptop before I knew about all of the complaints that lead to MS offering the upgrade to Win 10 for free. I did that and now I wish that I let WIN 8 exist as it was and took the opportunity to learn from it.

It seems that there is no going back to WIN 8 without purchasing or finding an older computer that still exists with WIN 8. If there is another way to go back to the old OS that I do not KNOW about I would appreciate being pointed in the right direction.

If you need all of the laptop information that is usually asked for I will need to wait until I get back home and dig it out. So if I do need to provide hardware information and or anything else about the computer that came with WIN 8 please let me know and I will gladly provide all of that information in a couple of weeks.

I need a few other answers about other subjects so I will peruse the pages here to see if I can find answers already answered or I will be sure to find the best forum to post the question in.

    ThanksHi

Your laptop may still have the factory restore partition, how you access it depends on the laptop. This will restore the laptop back to when you brought it.Some factory recovery procedures help you to backup your data and settings. EVEN if the recovery does it is worth getting a pen drive and making a Windows 10 recovery disk so if windows 8.1 doesn't live up to expectations you can reload Windows 10.

Solve : Unable to reset/refresh Windows 8.1 Enterprise?

    Answer»

I use Windows 8.1 Enterprise, which should be REFRESHED or reset to factory defaults but I am UNABLE to use built-in methods, because I got error message, that recovery media has to be MOUNTED, which is not present.
    Error message:

Could not find the recovery environment

I try to use following methods to generate these for my own. Firstly I created a custom WIM file:

        recimg –CreateImage C:\Win8Image

CustomRefresh.wim file was created successfully, but got same error message.

After that I tried to use original install.wim file from installer iso. I set it with following command:

        reagentc.exe /setosimage /PATH C:\Win8 /target c:\Windows /Index 1

It was successfull too, but got same error for both options.

I checked also system restore points with PowerShell commmand: Get-ComputerRestorePoint, but couldn't found any.

Solve : what is the magic way to make an Acer E5-511P boot?

    Answer»

So I have never ever had a problem like this before, so let us just SAY last night I turned off my system, put it in my laptop bag, then today I WENT to work came home, plugged in  the laptop, turned it on, and got to the acer ( explore BEYOND limits page ) and the little circle of balls keeps going round and round. what is the magic key to get it up and running, or at least to get me into my system. I am here using a TABLET, so bear with me. I have a 64bit windows 8.1 acer E5-511P laptop. thank you please help. I never needed tech support and they want to charge me 99.-199 to help. last time I buy an Acer, even Cnet says their tech support isn't the best, can someone help. thanks.I'd leave the computer powered on and connected to wall power because it might be going through a lengthy Windows Update. If it stays like this for more than 24 hours then your going to need the system recovery media to repair Windows.you know I have about had it with Microsoft and it always breaking down. when will they get it tio work with Windows 10? is it better to download and learn Linux. How different is that than Windows since that is all that I have used ever? And will my system support it, does Chrome work with it, and I think if I change to that I am going to switch to Firefox. Opinions on this.Hi Taylor

It was a very reasonable priced Laptop from about 4 years ago. Do you move it around when it's on? Perhaps the Hard drive is failing.
There is nothing BUILT in to the Aspire laptops to diagnose a faulty hard drive you would need a boot up flash drive with diagnostics. Or to see if someone local does free quotes/diagnostics.
I put my money on a failing hard drive.
