Solve : Issues with installing Origin on Windows 8?

Answer»

A friend has asked me to install The Sims 4 for them via CD, but I'm experiencing major problems. I created an account and attempted to SAVE and download before STARTING Origin, but nothing appeared or happened. As a result, I experimented with more abstract methods of obtaining Origin. When I tried to open it, it would show that it was loading next to the mouse arrow, but then halt. This would occur on a regular basis. So I realised it was definitely designed for Windows 10, but this LAPTOP isn't capable of running it. So I figured that if I got an OLDER version of Windows 8, it might work. I'm not sure whose software version that is, though.Origin is a game client like steam and should be able to download the installer from Origin and install it clean. Then log into an existing account or register and create one. Once the origin client is running you can then go to library to see games you have as well as you may be able to apply the Sims 4 game key to that account to register it with the account if it has not already been registered with another account. Then be able to download and install the Sims 4 game through Origin and play it if the system meets the minimum system requirements.

As far as Origin's compatibility with older operating systems I know that it runs fine with Windows 7 64-bit and newer. So Windows 8 should be fine assuming plenty of space on the hard drive or SSD to install it.

A friend of mine plays Sims 4 on a computer running Windows 7 64-bit with 4GB DDR2 RAM and a 2.6Ghz Quadcore CPU with nVidia GeForce GT730 video card and it runs fine. So as long as you have 4GB RAM or more, Quadcore CPU, and a GPU that meets the requirements for SIMS 4 you should be all set.

Solve : Acer logo loop and USB not working?

Answer»

Hello friends,
I am trying to fix somebody's LAPTOP Acer ES1-331 N15W3. Probably operating on Windows 8.1, it only shows Acer logo before restarting and its stuck on loop. It was given to me with being able to see Windows login screen - password always failed and after my first try to Reset Windows, it crashed because charger stopped working during the process [it is a European charger with sparky adapter for UK plugs, since then I found replacement charger that works but I never seen Windows login again]

I have tried System restore, Reset Windows with keeping the files and factory reset - all gets interrupted with a problem during the process.
Im locked out of other options as it doesnt accept user password anymore [definitely correct one] and there is no other account to choose from.

It was bought in Croatia, its in her language so I decided to download Win 8.1 x32 Croatian version, create bootable USB with rufus and set Boot load order to USB HDD at the first place, Secure boot disabled but that didnt work. I also switched from UEFI to legacy with F12 boot menu enabled, but the menu only shows Windows boot manager. Setting BIOS into default did nothing.

All solutions I found contain USB usage and since I cant get the laptop to recognise mine, Im stuck here. And Im sure its bootable USB, used it handful times on various laptops for the same purpose.

I will much appreciate any SUGGESTIONS, thanksWhen all you have done doesn't get the laptop to work it is looking like a Hard drive or memory Fault.

If you are able to boot the recovery media the memory is likely ok.

Leaving the hard drive faulty, if you have any diagnostic's tools you can boot from USB like for example PARTED Magic you could try running a diagnostic on the drive.

If you don't have diagnostic tools available but have some way to attach the drive to another computer, usb to sata adapter or attach it direct you will need to remove the drive.
This video shows how to remove the drive https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OowstDvLDFY
If the hard drive is failing you will need to replace it. Solve : Can't install Windows 8.1 from Windows 10?

Answer»

Hey! Sorry for my bad English in advance.
So, I have a laptop. It had win 8.1 for years, it was stable and fast, everything fine. Then my dad decided that we should upgrade it to win 10. Problem is, my laptop can't handle win 10 very well. As I see it, 4 GB RAM is not enough. So I decided to install Win 8.1 back. The smartass I am, I've thought: "yes, I can do it myself, no matter that I have never done it before. YouTube tutorials will help."
So I bought a win 8.1 online with key (reliable source, my win 10 is from here too), downloaded the file (4 GB), and watched a Ton of YouTube tutorials. I followed one step by step, and it went like this: burn the files for another virtual drive, run the setup file, go through the steps (agreements, language choice, etc), then wait and its done! Yeah, no. I've got this "compatibility report" message. For... 5 times?
I TRIED to search for YouTube tutorials for this one specific problem, and one of them said that I should change the setup file's compatibility to win 8, and try to run it like that. I did, and to my surprise, it worked! Well, not so much, but my computer STARTED to count the percentage of the installation process, it switched off and back a few times, I was so proud of myself, but then... Nothing. The computer started on win10, nothing has changed.
So, I tried the USB solution. I formated an USB to NTFL, copied the files on it, restarted the computer, went to the console PANEL, hit the "install from USB drive" button (or something like this, I don't know the exact words in English, as you may have noticed, I'm trying to explain everything), installation window pops up, agreements, language, key, installation mode, everything went just fine. Then I got the "installation media" message. It said that I should remove the USB, restart the computer. Nothing has changed. I tried again, with the other installation option (clearing off everything from the computer), but it didn't work as well. Again, just the "installation media" message.
I'm a Little desperate right know, I've tried everything as I found on YouTube and various IT forums, but nothing has worked so far. I don't mind if my whole computer resets itself, I just want to finish the installation. Any suggestions? I don't know, what can be the problem, but I can provide every little detail if needed. Thanks
(And sorry for my bad English again. I've tried my best.)Likely the best method would be wiping the HDD and doing a clean install from the USB...

Best Tutorials Out There... Quote from: Trains on April 09, 2020, 08:32:53 AM

Hey! When opening a desktop folder, it doesn't open right away and the space is blank before displaying the also blank folder after a long time (3 minutes-ish), it displays the contents. Also, when clicking a folder, the whole rectangle around it isn't highlighted, just the icon and the folder's name (pictures attached where I could take them).

What I was/wasn't doing:
I was surfing the INTERNET. I have also tried browsing the internet for solutions, but most answers say that the toolbar problem's a cosmetic thing and that it can be fixed by right-clicking on the desktop, which I can't.

Pictures:
Picture 1: The white taskbar
Picture 2: Example of opening a folder. The window differs from the state before the problem.
Picture 3: Another example of the file explorer looking different
If you want any before-the-problem pictures, or pictures of the things I wasn't able to capture (folder highlight, the disappearance of the power off button) I can attempt to upload them, but they are/will be taken with a phone camera, so the quality may not be the best.

If there's any important information I forgot, I'll add it.
Thank you for your time and willingness to help!

Solve : Standby and Sleep are not the same?

Answer»

On my Windows 8.1 Tablet I have the Sleep power option which I use a lot. I have just installed a power gadget which provides easy access buttons for turning the PC off in different ways. It does not have Sleep but it does have Standby instead.
But they are not the same thing. With Sleep I can turn the PC on rapidly with the Enter or other keys and it takes me back directly to where I was. In Standby this does not work. To turn back on I have to press the power on button. The computer is again back in action quite quickly, but does briefly go through some start up stages, showing the splash screen / manufacturer's name (Quantum) and logo for example.

I would like to know more about these two options, especially how they DIFFER in the effect they have on the computer. Can someone explain to me what the essential differences between Sleep and Standby are? Is one for some reason better than the other?

Clayto2The following terms have technical meanings
Hibernate
Hybrid
Stand By
Sleep
Power Off

The last one provides only aery small bit of power to an Ethernet device that can allow the network to turn on computer.

Hybrid is now the preferred method on modern computers.

The Windows Knowledge Base has been updated to explain in more detail the power options.
Here three of the terms are explained:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/how-shut-down-turn-off-pc
The "allow hybrid sleep" is covered here:
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-performance/what-does-the-allow-hybrid-sleep-option-in-power/bc7e46c5-b6a5-47e0-afe1-12e15b8078e6
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Sleep-and-hibernation-frequently-asked-questions

The objectives can be:
1. Lowest power consumption.
2. Quickest reboot time.
3. Easy configuration.
In general, you can have any two of the three. Pay special attention the "hybrid" option. It claims to be the best of all. You decide.

It is hard for me to make a concise answer. Maybe somebody else can pick this up with a simple answer.

Thanks for that reply and the links, which I will follow up in due course.

I have not come across the 'Hybrid' mode before but have now read a bit about it. It is not available on my quite new Tablet ---- I have done a search for it. I find Sleep and Standby is often conflated (I think it is the first time I have used that word), including in Help articles in Hope, eg. 'referred to as sleep mode, Standby or Stand by', or 'Standby Alternatively referred to as sleep mode', etc.

And there is the statement in a well known textbook: 'To resume, wake, or wake up a computer in Standby mode move the mouse, press a key on the keyboard, or press the power button on the computer without holding it down for more than a few seconds.' With my computer the first part does not work from Standby, you have to HOLD the on/off button, but the first part does apply to Sleep --- so the behaviour is significantly different for the two MODES. When I first used Standby I was alarmed as I thought startup had failed, because the Tablet would not wake up by pressing Enter. In 'the missing manual' for W8.1 there is some good explanation on pages 30-32, including detail about why Standby was not so good as it continued to use a trickle of power, resulting eventually in exhausted batteries and loss of data. It is more than a question of different terminology.

clayto
Quote from: Clayto2 on March 22, 2015, 03:52:21 PM

On my Windows 8.1 Tablet I have the Sleep power option which I use a lot. In Standby this does not work. To turn back on I have to press the power on button.

Then, your computer was not in Standby mode, it was in Hibernation. If you don't know how it got to Hibernation, then that may be automatically happening due to the power settings in your system.

I believe you need to get more familiar with the power settings in your computer. Do you know where to find them in Control Panel?

I'll explain how my laptop works with my current power settings. If running on battery, it goes into Sleep mode after 10 minutes of inactivity; if plugged in, it waits 15 minutes before going to Sleep. If I do not resume using the computer for 3 hours after it has gone into Sleep mode, it goes into Hibernation. This combination of settings indicates I'm using a Hybrid power SETTING. To wake up from Sleep mode, touching any key or moving the mouse will wake it. And, perhaps I should add that closing the top while the computer in on puts it into Sleep mode and opening the top will wake it. If the computer has gone into Hibernation by itself, as explained above, I need to press the power button to bring it back on. If the computer is awake and I want to go to directly into Hibernation, I press the power button. Again, all of these behaviors depend the power settings in a specific computer.

Hibernation is a completely powered-down state. The computer can be unplugged and the battery removed, and you can get right back to where you were before Hibernation by powering up. As you have discovered, this USUALLY takes less time than normal startup.

It is against the EULA to purchase a OEM copy of Windows Vista, 7, or 8 and then install and use that copy yourself, but many people do not realize this. You can see this in the License here. Solve : Windows 8.1 Update Fails during "Setting up Devices"?

Answer»

Hey guys so I have been trying to UPDATE my custom built PC from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1. I been trying and failing for over 2 years now. I haven't tried updating my PC to Windows 8.1 for more than a year. The old thread I started is here.

I recently decided to give it a go again and the Windows 8.1 update downloads, installs, and gets up to the "Getting Devices Ready" part and fails when it reaches around 75-80% with a BSOD.

The hardware specs of my PC is located here.

My PC had originally Windows 7 but I upgraded it to Windows 8.

This time around these were the steps I FOLLOWED to update to Windows 8.1.

Used the Windows 8.1 Update Guide from Microsoft as my reference

Ran Windows Update to make sure I had the latest updates.

Ran PatchMyPC to update all my apps and install and Windows updates that I missed.

Ran DriverPackSolution to update all of my drivers.

Ran Windows 8.1 Upgrade Assistant and removed and incompatible programs or hardware

Ran both CCleaner and Defraggler to free up disc space

Disabled my Antivirus software

Booted Windows in "Clean Boot" mode

Disconnected all peripheral devices (except mouse, keyboard, and used only 1 of three monitors connected to PC).

Attempted to update to Windows 8.1

After doing all of this, installing the Windows 8.1 update still failed at the "Setting Up Devices" stage. I am at my wits end, should I just do a clean installation/reformat of my drive with Windows 8.1? I have the Windows 8.1 ISO disc available for free from my University's DreamSpark Partnership with Microsoft or will I run into the same issue? Any help is appreciated!Hard to say.
I have installed Windows 8.1 several times on three Dell computers I have. Bu I always did the most basic install with no extras.

Here is a method you may want to try.
Get another HDD, even an old old. Format it.
Next, put that spare HDD into your PC. Remove anything not needed for a very basic install. install Windows 8.1 right off the DVD.
Do not use any third party tools. But allow Windows 8.1 to use your Ethernet to get into the Internet. It will find what drivers it needs.

My guess is that a simple clean install will work. Please let me know.
My OS is currently Installed on my SSD and all my data and a majority of my programs are installed on my secondary HDD. I can do a "Clean Install" with Windows 8.1 Disc received from my university via the Microsoft DreamSpark Partnership, should I still put in a spare ssd/hhd and perform a clean windows 8.1 install or would it be okay if I just did it on my existing SSD over my current Windows 8 installation?I think you should KEEP your existing stuff separate. In the dpast I have lost data when trying to do a 'clean' install with my data disk in the computer.
IMO, is is more prudent to just remove what is not needed and do the install on a plain HDD. If that works, you have a reference point for finding what went wrong.

So an update, I did what Geek-9pm suggested. Over this weekend, MicroCenter had a really good sale on Crucial SSD's so I grab one, put it in my rig, took out the other SSD and HDD and ran a clean install of Windows 8.1 using an ISO via USB drive. 8.1 was able to install successfully, so I reformatted the NEW hard drive and left it blank. Re-inserted the old SSD with Windows 8 and the Data HDD back into my rig, and this time I ran an Upgrade via the ISO from the USB....and some how it still FAILED.....

Even though a majority of my programs are on my HDD and Windows 8 is located on my old SSD. I really don't want to do a clean install of Windows 8.1 on my old SSD, because it is my understanding that my programs will still need to reinstalled which will be a pain. Any suggestions? At this point I am not able to help you.

But you know that the PC is basically compatible with Windows 8.1m but just does not work right with your SSD.
Hopefully, somebody else can tell you what the next step is.
Using Google, I did this:
cannot install 8.1 on SSD
It seems to be a problem for some users. Looking over those posts, it is not clear to me what the problem is. Somebody said that 8.1 has to initialize the drive in a different way. But it was mot documented, as far as I could see.

Anybody? Thanks Geek-9pm, I appreciate all of the help that you have given. I'll try doing a bit more research and see if I can find anything regarding this and keep the thread updated if I do, if I can't I'll probably find some time over a weekend and just do a clean install of Win 8.1 on the new SSD.

I was thinking of trying one more solution, what do you think if I cloned my old SSD with Win 8 to my new SSD and then tried updating it? Same issue as before?

I also noticed that my Win 8 "System Reserved" partition is not located on the SSD, rather it is on my HDD for some reason...Do you think that could be the reason?

The "System Reserved" partition is a special case. On windows 8.1 it now takes 350 GB of space, so it is not a candidate for SSD. On your current install it must have been much smaller. That just MIGHT be the problem.

A suggestion that I can not verify. You now have two SSDs to work with? OK, you can try a conservative three step process that will leave you at least a backup. See if you can move the "System Reserved" partition to the HDD. If that works, then attempt to clone the SSD and then try update on the clone.
They link below might be relevant. Or maybe not. But it has some good links.
http://www.eightforums.com/installation-setup/14703-system-reserved-wrong-drive.html
That is the best I can offer. Since it is technically an Update for Win 8 i'd highly suggest phoning MS support as Update Assistance is Free...Patio is right! You could get the right answer through Microsoft itself. Although I suspect was in your SSD. Perhaps you need higher gb.Hey guys, quick update. I just ended up doing a clean install of Windows 8.1 on my new SSD, because I realized that I had most of in install files for my programs on my Data HDD. I then just reformated my old SSD and put CentOS Linux on it and now have dual booting machine.

I think the reason the Win 8.1 upgrade was failing might have to do something with my Asus PCE-AC66 wireless card that I have...I had some uses with the drivers for it when I did me clean install on my new SSD which I posted about here. But thank you to everyone that helped and assisted!!Great to hear you solved the issue and are fixed up...

Solve : Weird Network Card Error Windows 8.1 64-bit?

Answer»

Alright, so this had always happened since i've upgraded from 32-bit win7 ultimate to 64-bit WIN8.1 Pro. I'm a gamer and it gets extremely frustrating when EVERY TIME i join a server my ping goes to 1000 and I have to wait almost 2 mins for it to go away. I've run multiple scans and no threats detected. No matter what multiplayer game i play from Steam or Origin, it always has the same lag spike. I had trouble with it before so i uninstalled the card drivers and reinstalled and it fixed the random disconnecting problem, but still had the lag spike.Welcome Back...
What card is this ? ?...Did you DLoad and install the 64 bit drivers for it and re-boot ? ?
The card is a DWA-552. The problem was that windows 8.1 picked the driver for the chipset integrated into the card itself (the NIC (Network Interface Card) would just randomly stop running with this basic driver). So I installed the LATEST drivers for the card (Windows 7 Driver ). Solve : Moved Windows partition to the left, won't boot (EFI)?

Answer»

I'm at my wits' end with this problem. I've searched all over, but can't find a solution. I'm fairly new to Linux, pretty comfortable fixing most windows problems. I've been messing around A LOT with installing linux distros recently I feel somewhat familiar with BIOS and bootloaders and EFI, at least on the linux end, but now this problem is mostly to do with windows booting, which I'm not too familiar with.

I'll try to be brief. I have a quadruple boot EFI system: Windows 8.1, Linux Mint (debian), OpenSUSE, and Fedora.
Before the troubles, sdb was like this:
sdb1 : fat32 300MB EFI boot
sdb2 : 900MB recovery
sdb3 : 128MB Microsoft reserved
sdb4 : 187GB Windows 8.1
sdb5 : XXXXX (this was the 20GB recovery partition that I moved to another HD, but it got wiped)
sdb6 : Suse
sdb7 : Mint
sdb8 : Fedora

I was on kind of a high having successfully installed and got on my way to customizing 3 linuxes. I had already deleted that large recovery partition, so while i was in the process of adding space to and moving the linux partitions, I decided to delete the other small microsoft reserved partitions (NOT the EFI partition). I'm almost certain that at this point I successfully booted into all 4 systems to see if anything broke. Then when it seemed like everything was okay, I decided to move the Windows partition to the left, planning to allocate that space somewhere. In Gparted (standard linux partitioning program), it warned me that moving a windows partition was a bad idea, but I figured I'd be able to deal with it. It successfully moved the partition but now Windows fails to boot.

The EFI partition is there and I can get into all the linux bootloaders. The Windows partition seems completely intact. After trying to boot into windows it will give an error message when I mount it in linux, but after doing startup repair from a windows USB I can mount it (startup repair fails no matter how many times I try it though).

My understanding of the problem now is that the bootmgr.efi file is pointing to a physical location on the disk to find the system but it's not there. I guess Linux partitions don't mind being moved around but Windows does. Is this the case? If so, how do I fix it?

Additional information, attempted fixes, etc:

1) I've tried booting from every single .efi file on sdb1. In fact, at one point I had 12 boot entries in the BIOS, and I think it fried the BIOS. I couldn't get past POST, freaked out, and needed to physically tear the thing apart, pop out the CMOS battery to reset it, and after that it came back (still with all the boot entries though). Has anyone ever encountered this? It's fine now.

2) I've tried ubuntu's boot-repair, but that seems to just find the windows .efi files so it doesn't help.

3) Windows startup repair doesn't work. I've tried it 4 times in a row several times.

4) Searching for phrases like "moved windows partition, won't boot", or "create new bootmgr.efi" usually result in pages on how to repair or create the BCD file. I've tried several of these solutions with no luck, and I don't think this is the problem anyway. Originally Windows 8 had no boot manager screen. When I was installing the first linux distro I used EasyBCD, which created a Windows boot manager screen, but no linux. Since that Grub would boot to the windows boot manager. After upgrading to Windows 8.1 the windows boot manager screen disappeared, but Grub still worked fine booting into all systems. When attempting the fix at:

http://www.fixedbyvonnie.com/2013/12/how-to-repair-the-efi-bootloader-in-windows-8/
and following up with this page which someone in the comments sugggested:
http://www.techspot.com/guides/630-windows-8-boot-fix/

I found that "bootrec /scanos" yields 0 windows installations.

5) I tried changing the boot flags for sdb4 to all kinds of combinations before RUNNING startup repair with no luck.

6) The only other solution I can think of at this point to try is creating two "dummy" partitions to the left of sdb4. I have no record of the exact sizes of the original ones, and I'm reluctant to mess around with moving the windows partition again. Is that a crazy idea?

7) It's probably clear I'd really rather not re-install windows. I don't have the original install disc.

If anyone can offer any help I'd really appreciate it. Solutions, other posts that cover the same area, or corrections if there seems to be something that I've misunderstood... ANYTHING, please!

Thanks. In what order were these OS's installed ? ?Try repairing with EasyBCD.
https://neosmart.net/EasyBCD/Buy another hared drive and start over. Use to old disk as you backup.
Your understanding of how partitions are named and used is not good enough.
Never delete a partition n in Linux named 5. The number of primary partitions is not limited to 4. All the OS partitions I listed have always been primary partitions. There has never been a logical partition on this drive. I listed it above merely in the interest of thoroughness and to avoid people asking why sdb4 was followed by sdb6, and then mistakenly assuming as you are that it must be the cause of this problem.Quote from: Computer_Commando on February 17, 2015, 04:56:27 PM
Try repairing with EasyBCD.
https://neosmart.net/EasyBCD/

Quote
This drive is GPT.
I stand corrected. Partition programs do not always modify the boot loader correctly. They often fail. Also, there is little value in moving a partition from one place to another.

For about the same investment of time, one can setup a new hard drive with the desired layout and keep the old drive as an archive. Solve : Nonresponsive Programs?

Answer»

I have an ASUS K55N that is about a year and a half old. I use it heavily for gaming.

I have been having a problem where my programs become unresponsive. Here is what typically happens, I am playing a game for about 30 minutes smoothly then all of a sudden it will freeze for a second then unfreeze for a second repeatedly. Often at this POINT I open task manager and restart the program and it runs fine for another 30 minutes, sometimes I leave the program running and after about 10 minutes of this annoying FREEZING and unfreezing it will run smoothly again but it is more likely to freeze completely and force me to end the task. When I have my web browser open at the same time as the game, the web browser will also become unresponsive. The web browser won't become unresponsive on its own though. When the web browser is unresponsive it behaves similarly to the game, acting sluggish then freezing and needing to be restarted. I usually have teamspeak 3 running at the same time and it will occasionally become unresponsive when the game does but it clears up rather quickly.

Here some events that happened at the same time I started noticing the problem.... I installed BF4 and PLAYED that (this game is too much for my computer specs) and it had the problem said above. This is understandable, but what bothers me is that now most of my games do it. Other events are, my Hard drive became full, I installed a mod for a game, and there was a windows update which may or may not have been interrupted (I don't remember). This all happened 3 months ago.

Right now I have just Firefox open and 23% memory is being used with firefox using the most. If I recall correctly, when I looked at memory when the problem started, when running the game normally total memory use was around 25% and when I was having the problem it was around 50%. It was 3 months ago and I may be wrong, I will try to check again.

Here are the games I play: DayZ (has the most problems but is an alpha test and isn't optimized), BF4 (dont play anymore), Mount and Blade (runs w/o much issue), CSGO (I get 60 fps but it has the problem said above), Skyrim, Minecraft, Total War, Civ 5

Thank you for your help.UPDATE: UPON further investigation, when running normal .1% disk is used but when the problem occurs it is at 100%
Ignore the part I said about 50% memory in the original post

Solve : Lost Folder?

Answer»

So, I was testing out my new batch file that hides files, and then requires a password to un hide it, all from the file. The problem was that anybody could right click it, hit edit, then change the password to get to it(assuming they have basic computer knowledge). So I had made an .exe file that required a password to open, which all it did was open that file. Then I noticed, it wouldn't hide the specified folder because the .bat file that the .exe opened was in a different directory. So I made a shortcut to the folder, then I put the folder in the same directory. Sadly, then when I un-hid the .bat, the directory was gone, and it took the folder with it, as far as I know. The major problem is that the folder that was taked was my whole desktop. I had put everything into that folder to save space. Now I cannot FIND it. Solve : Erasing a failing HDD while online??

Answer»

Greetings Everyone,

I recently had a mechanical hard drive from another computer begin failing on me - lots of read errors, sometimes it doesn't come online, the usual. I was able to get a great deal of data off of it, so I'm safe there.

Now, I want to make sure the thing is ERASED so I can get rid of it, or at least erased as much as POSSIBLE. My computer has a SATA docking station in the case, so I figure this will be a great way to interface with the drive.

The problem is, right when I plug in it, Windows falls over its self loading the drive up, scanning it, open folders, ETC. My issue is that I don't want my computer touching the darned thing, because then if I try to get any program to interact with it - e.g, a drive erasing program, things start freezing up while Windows tries to figure out why the drive isn't responding (failing). Of course, if I try get several programs working away at it - the erasing program, windows explorer that opened automatically when it detected a new filesystem (which consequently freezes usually while it tries to read it), device manager while I try to disable the drive and get Windows to unfreeze again - I'll get a massive amount of notification sounds when I YANK the drive as windows suddenly realizes that it's gone and can move on.

Sorry for the long winded post, everyone - my ultimate question is, how can I mount this drive in my machine such that Windows (and any other process) will ignore it, so I can set one program to work on it exclusively for erasing purposes?

Thanks! If the drive is that far gone, I don't think you need worry about any data that may have been on it before. Choose to disable any programs you don't need on startup. Never worked with an 8.1 tablet before but if you can get up task manager it should have a tab for 'start up programs'.

Seems like there is a program set to run on start that has an error.
