Solve : W2k Screen Resolution Problem?

Answer»

I've just upgraded my Toshiba 4000CDT from Windows 98 to Windows 2000, service pack 4. Display is OK on 800x600 but upping it to 1024x768 just makes the display larger so that I have to scroll to see the extremities (like the task bar). I've got a Chips& Technologies (now Asiliant) 65555 adapter. I've upgraded the BIOS to 8.2, downloaded the W2k drivers from Asiliant but nothing will persuade the display to fit on the screen. I need the higher resolution to run my business accounts so help please - there could even be a free beer in it for the right advice! Have you tried updating your video CARD drivers with the latest ones? (video card manufacturer's website) ... Also, have you tried running a Windows Update by going to http://www.microsoft.com ?

[GLB]Flame[/glb]Yep, downloaded the Asiliant W2k Drivers for the 65555 (although it also refers to 69030), release 2.5.1c and installed them.
Is it something to do with LCD vs CRT? The new drivers all have refresh rates which I thought was irrelevant for an LCD screen. Also, I've lost the Toshiba hardware setup(HWSETUP) control panel extension. The usual helpful Microsoft error - "an error occurred while Windows was working with the Control Panel file C:\WINDOWS\system32\HWSETUP.CPL". This is inspite of downloading the latest version of this file. :-/Brewman.....Have you tried adjusting your display using the monitor controls ? Reduce the width and the height when in the 1024 x 768 size ........that should do it for you .

Let us know
dl65 Hi dl65 - I'm using a Toshiba laptop which as far as I know doesn't have any monitor controls - unless they are in the Hardware Setup utiility which also doesn't work SINCE I loaded W2k. :-/ Quote

...I'm using a Toshiba laptop which as far as I know doesn't have any monitor controls - unless they are in the Hardware Setup utiility which also doesn't work since I loaded W2k...

You've done everything I would have done. You didn't specifically say the Toshiba was a laptop, but I knew. I've had and worked on many laptops. There are no "monitor controls" on a laptop.
Drivers appear to be where you said: http://www.asiliant.com/driver.htm

Notebook displays do have what is called "Native Resolution" which I thought meant the sharpest picture for that resolution.

Solve : OK weird question about 2 hard drives on my PC?

Answer»

so when i installed my second HDD it was F... now when i reformated my hard drive C: only it became F and F is now C.... is that going to screw up my computer? anyways.... since i probably have to reformat again... if i reformat F will it delte C?? lol anyone catch along what im trying to ask? anyways hit me up ???That ONE was a shooting qn
The thing is that this is what I think you can do.It can by chance do some screwing if that is how it operates.
An alternative solution to that is to use BOOTABLE FLOPPY with the format command and other COMMANDS that you need e.g Fdisk.
Before formating C ensure that you have only one hdd connected to your data bus(the one you want to format) then proceed with the format. When you are done then reconnect the hdd-1 and assign the later you want to the other hdd which you have just formatted.
I think this will HELP just a bit.Disconnect old harddrive. Use fdisk or other program like the windows Xp setup to delete the partition on new hard drive (I consider you have just one partition). Recreate it as a primary partition and format it again (ntfs type). Install Windows XP. Connect the old hard drive.
Note: I consider your computer supports Windows XP. If not, replace ntfs with fat32 for other types of windows like windows 98, Me; keep with ntfs if it is windows 2000.

Solve : Updating Firefox on the network using a batch file?

Answer»

I need help with making a batch FILE. REALLY what I need to know is how to tell it to find and run the uninstall file for mozilla FIREFOX and then to find and run the INSTALL file for the update to 1.0.1 so that we can push out this update to the network. I am new at this so PLEASE help me.What operating systems are used on the network?
For each user account you can set some options (in Windows NT/2000/XP) on the domain controller. You simply make a bat that calls the uninstaller and then the installer (both will be probably on a network folder or on all the computers in the same location, for example c:\files).
It is a problem if the user logs multiple times on the same computer before you delete the bat file.
It can be installed with some Microsoft tools, but I don't know (shame on me ) how to use those tools. I don't even know how they are named.

Solve : So, now I do Format C:?

Answer»

I have done the unthinkable, I have GIVEN up on win 98 and formatted, I now have copy of win2000 pro, cause I hear that one is most stable. any thoughts on what order I should install things? ex. MOBO chipset drivers, direct x, vid card sound card, network, modem etc drivers, programs and craplets? also, any thoughts on using ntfs? does it support the same file SECURITY encryption as xp pro does?
I am a new student learning to program, and I plan on using micro$oft visual studio enterprise ed,DREAMWEAVER,fireworks mx, photoshop 7,And M$ transaction server, and IIS/Pweb server. (Which i have backed up all from my last comp)
I have a computer witch i have built myself, using an Epox mobo with onboard sound, and a duron 800, (OC to 1003mhz) 512 MB RAM, geforce 4 MX 64MB, 2 60 GB hdd's, (not raid) and an Aureal 3D monster sound II 300 MX, witch I am told the company no LONGER is around any more to support drivers?
Should I just leave that card out and just go with the onboard sound?
Anyone with any thoughts and ideas you may have, from your experiences of building a computer, please give me your feedback,
I am not a newbie, but, There are still Sooo many things I dont know yet, especially about win 2000 ( ive never used before) maybe i should stick with win 98SE? cause i am familiar with that one? or is win 2000 better?Win 2K is much more stable and secure. 98 will soon be unsupported my MSoft. I don't think it matters what order you install drivers as 2K will pre-install most of them anyway. NTFS is the same as XP and is a better file system than FAT.copy of w2k?.................re-load win98 and re-build system/?~

Solve : W2K Event Viewer RedX?

Answer»

W2K fully up to date & bugproof.

I looked in my Event Viewer (as we do) and to my horror I've got a [glb]X[/glb] every time I start my computer.

Here's what it SAYS:
The PocketCam 3Mega, WDM Video Capture service failed to start due to the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified.

Now this is a digital camera that I set up as a web cam to try it out, no worries but I uninstalled it and since then I've been getting this error.
I've since reinstalled & uninstalled it again just to be sure but that didn't help.

I've run HiJackThis & generated a start up list log and the offending file is below.

Enumerating Windows NT/2000/XP services
PocketCam 3Mega, WDM Video Capture: System32\Drivers\Ca533av.sys (autostart)

I've generated a bootlog and the questionable entry is below.

Did not load driver \SystemRoot\System32\Drivers\Ca533av.sys

I guess my question is, how/where do I tell Windows not to try & load this thing because I hate seeing the [glb]Xs[/glb]In Control Panel, Admin Tools, Services,
Right CLICK on the service, choose properties, then under startup type choose manual or disabled. Thanks for the response Gussery, yes, I too expected (hoped) to find an entry in services relating to
PocketCam 3Mega, WDM Video Capture:
but it wasn't there
The only thing I could find was
Still Image Service but it was disabled.

Another clue...
In my device manager under
Sound, Video & Game controllers -> Legacy video capture devices I found a driver WDM video for windows capture driver, I removed it but it came BACK on the next boot.

Do you think this
Enumerating Windows NT/2000/XP services
PocketCam 3Mega, WDM Video Capture: System32\Drivers\Ca533av.sys (autostart)
could be hiding in 'services' under a different name or something, it's got to be starting from somewhere. Does anything for this device show up in your device manager? If so, disable it there.OK, I tried that Gussery, see my post above, the rotten thing keeps coming back.
I'm going to re-create the problem on my computer at work to give me more time with the problem.
Mean while I'm still open to any suggestions, I still think it's starting from 'services' somewhere. Update & Free Bump

Here's a copy of an email back from the camera people, I don't think they have a clue.

Dear Edward, (Me)

You should REMOVE all the drivers you previous installed from your PC then re-install the drivers except the WEBCAM drivers then it should work.

Regards,

Emily (Her)

I'm still open to suggestions.
have you tried their suggestions?SUBJECT closed, problem solved
Thanks for the input.

Solve : Unable to Load 3rd Party Programs into IE?

Answer»

Ummm... My problem is really confusing... and I dont know what to do about it... Ok, Couple of weeks AGO I started watching MOVIES on www.ifilm.com. I didnt go there for a while since I had recently formatted my computer. Now I started going back and I try to watch movies and it ask me to pick a media player and I guess it scans my computer for installed media players. My problem is that it says I dont have any media players installed when in fact I downloaded quicktime and Realplayer from their link and installed them along with Windows Media Player 10 which was already installed... I also tried to run a speed test on my connection and I found out that my flash player which is Macromedia's Shockwave Flash player ALSO wouldnt load. So thats my problem... but the weird thing is... I can use Mozilla's FireFox and it ask me which player I want to use when I go to www.ifilm.com... and it shows ALL the players installed... so My guess is its SOMETHING wrong with Internet Explorer but the thing is I reset all my settings to default on it and it still wont load anything.... Any Ideas to help me? Thanks for your time.Jaeden:

Need more info. What operating system are you using? What version of Internet Explorer (IE) are you using? (to find out, in IE click Help and select About Internet Explorer).

Let us know,
DocIm using Windows XP Home Edition. And im using 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519 version of IE. Anything Else?Jaeden:

If you trust the Web site, you might try adding www.ifilm.com to the Internet Explorer (IE) trusted sites:

1. In IE, click Tools and select Internet Options.

2. In Internet Options, click the Security tab, click Trusted Sites and click the Sites button.

3. Clear the checkbox next to "Require server verification..."

4. Under "Add this Web site to the zone:" type www.ifilm.com and click the Add button.

5. Click OK, then click OK again to close Internet Options.

That just might do it.
DocNope... That didnt work either... Anymore ideas? can I can watch the stuff when I used FireFox... just not IEJaeden:

Try the Advanced tab in Internet Options; enable anything that you think may help.

Let us know if you have questions regarding anything you are unsure about enabling.

Already tried that too... didnt work either... Also messed with my internet options/security/Internet Options... didnt work either.. It cant be my firewall because the files play when I run Mozilla... just not IE..Jaeden:

Does ifilm.com require that Java scripting be enabled? It is not even supported in IE 6 by default and the only way to enable it is to download and install the free Java machine. This may explain why Mozilla is able to do what IE cannot. Check the ifilm.com Web site support to see if Java is required.

Solve : XP Paging file.?

Answer»

Is there any way of getting the start of the paging file(s) anchored to the back of the drive (or drive partition) so that they STAY out of the way of other files? You can move it to another drive or partition but once there you can't specify it's placement. I guess you could isolate it in it's own partition.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307886/

Hope this helps. While you're at it, you can redirect all Windows temporary files, IE History, etc., to the same partition. Works for me.
<---- agrees with sidewinder and commando

A second hard drive (even just an used, inexpensive, 4 GB hard drive) makes a great place to move the pagefile and all the temporary files commando mentioned.

The only other thing you might try is setting the size of the page file to zero, rebooting to Safe Mode, doing a disk cleanup and defrag, then resetting the pagefile back to its original size and rebooting. This may recreate the page file as one contiguous collection of clusters at the end of the defragmented data on the hard drive partition.

Regards,
DocIt is probably a question for Microsoft, but what I am looking for is a means of anchoring the paging file to the back of the C: drive so that, when the System makes it bigger, when it has to, it EXPANDS towards the front of the drive so that the paging file is always at the back of the drive and its address is always the same, rather than having it move about all over the C: drive.

I have the My Documents folder on D: (Less the 'My') and the Music, Images and Video on drive E:

Drive F: is used as an Archive drive.

In every case it would still need to be anchored to the back of any of these other partitions in preference.

I leave the Temporary Internet Files on C: as I run CCLeaner before shutting down.Mac:

I hear what you're saying. The problem is that the pagefile cannot be moved once you boot to the OS. It may be moved when you boot to a different OS, but that won't help you.

One good third party suite of utilities i'd recommend you try is Norton System Works, which does offer a better defrag tool with the ability to move files to the end of a partition. The only problem is that the tool cannot do this with the pagefile because it can only be run from inside Windows.

Still, let me know if you find any other way of moving the page file than that which has been suggested (you've got me curious)!

Regards,
DocJust a thought really Doc,

I'll probably add more RAM instead so I don't have much of a pagefile.

Someone suggested that it should run in a 2 Gb FAT16 partition to speed it up.Mac:

Yeah. Can you ever have enough RAM?

One other thing you may try is to set the minimum and maximum size of the paging file to exactly the same size (about two or two and a half times your total RAM should be adequate for both). You may need to set the size as large as three times your RAM if you play a lot of games or use high-end graphics. By keeping the paging file at a static size, Windows will not have to continuously calculate and adjust the size.

The best suggestion, which was made by sidewinder, is to move the paging file to a different hard drive. That way, writing to and reading from the paging file will not slow the OS down.

Regards,
Doc
Quote

...I'll probably add more RAM instead so I don't have much of a pagefile....

Doesn't work that way. The more RAM you have the bigger the pagefile. Create another partition just for the pagefile.
Commando is also correct. Having the paging file as the only file in a separate partition is the best way to keep it from becoming fragmented. Having this separate partition on a different hard drive is the a good way to optimize performance.

Thanks to you all. These are the stock answers at this time and ones which I am well accquainted with. The URL that Doc gave gives the current MS recommendation to keep a small pagefile on the boot drive and move the bulk of it to another partition or PHYSICAL drive.

That is probably the best answer, especially if the pagefile drive partition is formatted to FAT16

I was reading this article RAM, VIRTUAL Memory, PageFile and all that stuff and am wondering if having sufficient RAM, and the computer set up as a server, would mean an absolute minimum size of pagefile.Mac:

I agree.

Another thing you might try is to have Windows delete the pagefile every time you shut down the PC. This way, a new, unfragmented paging file will be created every time you boot the computer. To configure this in Windows 2000 or XP Pro, log on as an administrator and...

1. Click Start > Run...

2. Type secpol.msc /s

3. In Local Security Settings, expand Local Policies and click on Security Options; in the right pane, scroll down to "Shutdown: Clear virtual memory pagefile" and right-click on it and choose Properties.

4. In the Shutdown: Clear Virtual Memory Pagefile Properties, select Enable and click Apply and OK.

5. Close Local Security Settings and restart the computer.

Solve : Usb drivers for Win NT?

Answer»

Hi,

Do we GET Usb drivers for Win NT.

Please clarify my confusion:
I think they are inbuilt in Win xp,2000,etc
and you can downlaod and install for 98.

Are they available for NT.I am prety sure that you can not use USB DEVICES in windows NT UNLESS some one has come up with 3rd PARTY software.Am i right about my concept with other versions.

Third party softwares like?Yes the drivers are inbuilt for win 2000 but win 98. BY 3rd party I mean if some hack the os to be able to use usb devices. Like being able to read NTFS formatted DRIVES in win 98By googling a bit i found out that usb drives are availabe for 98 and not for NT.

2000 and xp also use NTFS.

All the drives and folders that i am trying to sync. are either on the same drive in different folders or on shared drives through my server or on a firewire backup drive.List SYSTEM specs.......Which OS?My primary COMPUTER is a dell laptop with 512 k, 2 network cards and a pentium 3 processor, operating with xp pro. I also use a firewire drive and Samantec Ghost to back up. This laptop is used mainly at work, but also taken HOME. At the office it is part of two networks, primary network is based on Server 2000. I have somehow ended up with 3 Customer folders with multiple subfolders (one customer) in each, on the laptop. I also have a customer folder as described above on a mapped sharred drive on the 2000 server. Because i work at home i have the same files in the aforementioned folders (but not the latest version in each) and i am trying to consolidate files and folders so that i end up with the identical Customer folder in my laptop and on the server, and to continue to synchronize those two folders in the future

Solve : a stupid question?

Answer»

i want to upgrade my windows me -- xp.

i have been told to install service pack one, this was recommened by compaq (after i paid for the advice)

my question is.... will this work? and where do i get it and do i have to pay for it and if so how much???

the end result i am trying to achieve is to upgrade my microsoft word that came with windows me.

thanks - kymKym:

For Microsoft Office 2003 you need Window 2000 with Service Pack 3 or Windows XP (with Service Pack 1 or 2 optional):

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=822129#XSLTH3123121122120121120120

Microsoft Office XP is compatible with Windows Me, however:

http://www.microsoft.com/office/previous/xp/sysreqs.asp

You may purchase Office XP (used or never-been-used) at Amazon.com:

http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGLD,GGLD:2004-51,GGLD:en&q=%22office+xp%22+site%3Aamazon%2Ecom

That way, you would not have to upgrade to Windows XP, but you would still get most of the cool features of Office 2003 in Office XP.

You could have gone here and get the advise for free.

You'll want either a full version of Windows XP Home or Professional or an upgrade of XP Home or Professional.

Both must be purchased in stores.

Both COME with either no Service Pack, Service Pack 1 or Service Pack 2.

Be certain that you buy a CD-ROM that has got Service Pack 2. This saves a lot of downloading.

The service packs are free, but Windows XP Home or Professional are not.

Solve : Boot up failure?

So what's the best way to transfer free space from my other partitions to the c: drive?

I guess all you can do is put C drive junk onto your other partition or go down the partition resizing path again.
I have never had complete success trying to change partitions after windows has been installed but I haven't tried for a few years so maybe now the partitioning software has improved.

I'll be interested to see how you go because I would like to create an extra partition on my drive.Quote
So I fixed it.

I opened up the computer, reseated the ram, took out the system battery, and reset CMOS. After that, i was able to boot up to the point where the computer would freeze on the Partition Commander software screen.

I was finally back at square one - or so I thought. I had always noticed that my keyboard light and laser mouse never lit up and it dawned on me that the computer wasn't detecting the USB hardware. So I plugged in PS/2 hardware and while the mouse still didn't work, the keyboard did. I exited the software, got back to windows and deleted Partition Commander.

Now I'm back to normal, but still low on C: memory.
So what's the best way to transfer free space from my other partitions to the c: drive?

And thanks for the help, guys. I feel really stupid.

Hey! Good for you!

I should have said - NEVER use anything other than a PS2 keybard and mouse when doing this sort of work. I won't have wireless accessories, they're just too much trouble.

So, it isn't memory it is FREE-SPACE.

What have you got on the C: drive that doesn't need to be there, or do you need more space anyway?

You can move the My Documents folder, Email folder, Temporazry Internet Folder and Paging file to other partitions and do a cleanup as shown on the link below.

Never having used Partition Commander but having used other partition resizers I can tell you that, unlike many other programs, programs for partion work need to be studied VERY carefully before using.

It is also better to stick with the PS2 equipment, disconnect from the internet physically, and - remove - your anti-virus program to prevent it interfering with the process, especially on re-boot.

So now that you have got it back up again you need to decide how much space you need to have on C:

It is currently 5 GB or 5120 MB and I suggest that you really need 8 GB or 8192 MB so you need to shrink one of your other partitions (WITHIN IN THE EXTENDED PARTITION) by 3072 MB first of all.

Then it must not be butted up against the C: drive partition so you need to move/slide this/these partitions to the back of the drive.

Then you need to shrink the Extended partition so that it properly encompasses the Logical drives and so that it leaves room for the C: drive to grow.

All you have to do then is to use the maximum space available (It might not show precisely as 3072 MB) so that the C: drive butts up against the Extended partition.

Easy!

Now re-install your AV program, re-connect, update the AV program and run a scan as soon as you can.

1. Shrink drive D: by 3072 MB

(C: drive partition){(Logi drive D:)----(Logical drive E:)}

Where{} {Shows the extent of the Extended partition} and ---- shows the space

2. Slide drive D: to *censored* up against drive E:.

(C: drive partition){----(Logi drive D:)(Logical drive E:)}

3. Shrink the Extended partition.

(C: drive partition)----{(Logi drive D:)(Logical drive E:)}

4. Make the C: drive partition larger to use all of the free-space.

(C: drive partition----){(Logi drive D:)(Logical drive E:)}

Here ---- shows the 3072 MB (approx) added to drive C:Quote

Good you fixed the bios problem by a reset of the bios (didn’t think of that )
And you uninstalled the software by using a ps/2 keyboard.

Make more room on the c: del the temp files (temp, Temporary Internet Files and recycle bin) of all users. In win xp:
Temp dir C:\Documents and Settings\(user name)\Local Settings\Temp
Temporary Internet Files C:\Documents and Settings\(user name)\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
If you didn’t do this already.

Remove the program’s you don’t use ANYMORE.
You can move the Pagefile (windows hard DISK memory) to a adder partition.

Repartitioning hard disks:
The room you want to ad to c: you take from d: or e:
I use Partition magic to partition and repartition my hard drives without any problems when Windows XP is running.
Your current hard disk \disks layout is:

Hard Drive 1: Seagate Barricuda - 5G dedicated to OS, 40G dedicated to programs, 45G dedicated to media
Hard Drive 2: Maxtor (30G for media only)

Code: [Select]

1. Shrink drive D: by 3072 MB

Solve : Hey guys having trouble Upgrading Win 98 to Win XP?

Alright, well, I thought I was going to be running Linux but my older brother still hasn't set the CDs i need, and he lives in England whereas i live in Massachusetts so my mother bought me a Windows XP upgrade with SP2 and I run it it goes for a while and gets to around 60 mins left where it says its updating my files and either the screen goes black or the install freezes. I have 128MB and 7274MB of free space and for some reason its just not going, any help from you guys? And this is what kind of computer with what kind of hardware that was working fine until what???

Need more detailsYour going to need more than 128MB of RAM to get XP to run well. How big is the drive?

If you have the '98 CD it is also MUCH better to do a clean install. You just need to re-partition the drive and re-format using ONLY the XP CD and you'll be asked to introduce your '98 CD as proof of using a previous MS OS.

Upgrading on top of '98 with older software and with your anti-virus program installed is asking for trouble.

Solve : available memory after an ram upgrade?

Answer»

We recently updated a PC with 128 mb of ram to 256mb. In the system information message it shows that we now have 256 mb of ram but under available resource it still says 67% free. We expected to see a LARGER number since we have more ram. The only WAY we saw more available memory was to remove some of the programs that start up with the computer.

How does this work? How can we know if there is more memory available for programs?

Thanks
GloYour operating system?67% of 265MB RAM.

Not 67% of 128MB RAM anymore.

Windows decides how it uses memory, not you.Your operating system is?

Sorry,

I should have statd that the system is windows 98. We simply added a 128 sim to the system.

GloWhat are system resources, and why do I run out of them? Thanks for all of your help. I am formerly a Unix programmer in the corporate environment so looking into my own PC hardware problems or Operating problems is new to me but very interesting.

Should adding more ram to a Win 98 system IMPROVE the performance of MS word 2000? As you can see my friend's computer is several years behind the times but he is only doing word processing.

Thanks,
GloQuote

...Should adding more ram to a Win 98 system improve the performance of MS word 2000...

More than 256MB on Win98? No. Upgrading to Win2k-Pro will make the most noticeable difference in speed.
That should be ENOUGH to have a very usable system with a PII-400 and up. Memory resources ARE dictated (mostly) by Windows, but does the sytem work OK? Even if you have a Pentium 5 10 GIGAHERTZ machine you can only type so fast, right? What happens is windows keeps as much files as possible into the RAM for a greater performance.

This is a % which i am not sure of.
So when you added more RAM, your system would have become faster.

Solve : can't start windows?

Answer»

I have a IBM Thinkpad PENTIUM III, was using windows 2k. Recently upgraded to Windows XP. While start up process a screen use to be displayed with the options 'windows Xp professional and below that 'Microsoft windows'.Windows XP was always highlighted. And on the right hand side of the screen the seconds would count down. Below some text was written to the likes of the selected programme will start in 22 seconds et....
Also an option to select the other programme using the arrow keys and pressing enter. If I always hit enter key and Windows Xp would start up. One fine day i thought of selecting 'Microsoft Windows' and see what happens.

The screen went blank lot of command lines came up on the screen and the blank again and then it displayed a message SAY can't start windows system32.hal.dll file is corrupt or missing. Please install file again. there after that is all it displays each time we try to start the computer.
have booted the computer with a bootable disk made on another desktop and all data is SEEN on the hard drive. Tried inserting a XP disk to repair or re-install the file to no avail. Also it does not read the cd drive. Tried re-formating the hard drive so may be load XP again. Does'nt allow us to do that.
Any Solutions will be much appreciated. Please Please.Press F8 before loading Windows XP and select the original installation you wish to boot from.

Did you overwrite a previous version of Windows when installing XP?It sounds like you loaded XP on top of 2000 (always a bad idea to do this) and you a) have a lot of non-functional items, and b) wasted a lot of hard drive space.
That is why you get the new message at boot between choosing between XP and whatever was on there previously.

When installing a new operating system you are always better off formatting the whoe drive and starting over. Some people get lucky and can "make it work" but it's not worth the aggravation.thanks for replying to my post, That would probably be the reason for this situation. Is there any solution to this or do i have to throw the laptop out?Quote

Do you have operating system CD's or did it come only with the image on a hidden partition? Do you get a message to press F12 if you want to reinstall every time you boot?no i do not get the prompt to press F12. Also can't reformat the drive, says bad command in DOS.Pick whichever operating system you want to use, make sure in the BIOS youcan boot from CDROM (F1 when you boot), then reload that Windows, butmake SURE you format the drive with either FAT32 (my preference) or NTFS (will slow things down a bit).I just need to know if you partitioned the drive and installed 2000 on one partition and XP Professional on another, or have you done as stated and upgrade 2000 to XP?

You should have edited the boot.ini file in this case to remove the reference to Windows 2000.

It could be that the ntldr,ntdetect.com or boot.ini files are corrupt.

If you put the XP CD into the CD-ROM drive it should boot. (?)

If you have a floppy with the ntldr, ntdetect.com and boot.ini files on it it should also boot.

If you can run a KNOPPIX CD from the CD-ROM drive together with this boot re-director bootdisk BIOS BOOTDISK it will boot Knoppix without altering the BIOS boot sequence. If Knoppix can read the drive you can save any data by using the K3B burning program which comes with the Knoppix CD.

If you decide to re-install with an XP SP2 CD then you might have a problem deleting old NTFS partitions so you may need to use this DELPART BOOTDISK

There is also the BOOTINIEDIT bootdisk whichwill allow you to edit the boot.ini file on NTFS volumes.

It looks as if you'll need a boot.ini file that reads as follows...

[boot loader]
timeout=10
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

Alternatively, have you tried booting to the Recovery Console and typing - fixboot - or - fixmbr?

Take a look at - bootcfg /rebuild - and if you type - help - at the prompt you'll see a list of the commands available for use with the Recovery Console.Mac,

I am so glad to see you promoting the Knoppix CD. Quite a handy tool, isn't it?Quote

Solve : Windows 2000 startup list?

Answer»

My friend just installed Win2000 and can't access his startup program LIST to modify/delete unwanted programs that start with Windows 2000. He's tried running msconfig from the run command line and gets an error message-unavailable.

Any help appreciated!msconfig is not a valid command for Win2k. CClearner can access startup programs. You can also download a msconfig from the net if you wish.CB:

He will have to edit the registry:

1. Start > Run
2. Type REGEDIT
3. Browse to the following keys and remove any programs that are not wanted as startup programs:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Runonce

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunonceEx

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Runonce

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunonceEx

HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Runonce

HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunonceEx

There are other keys where startup programs may be launched, but this is a good starting place.

IMPORTANT: Make sure he backs up the entire registry, or at least backs up any keys before he deletes them. To back up the full registry: In Regedit, select File > Export and SAVE the registry backup to a secure folder on the HARD drive.

Best regards,
Doc

Hey Doc, you should look at Autoruns from
http://www.sysinternals.com
It's quite an eye opener. You can find the original msconfig for Windows 2000 on the 'net if you look, but you can also use the ONE from XP

XPMSCONFIG.ZIP

Had a look at AutoRuns after Fed's post. That LOOKS even better.

Process Explorer is good too.

Mac, I think if you have Autoruns & Procexp in the same directory they will 'link' to each other so they jump from one to another.
I'll check it out myself one of these days.

Solve : Need solution?

Answer» Hello,
these are the transcipts which i had written on other forum when my pc was not even starting.

"
Hello,
just a few weeks ago, i had put into use a software called -"system commander". LITTLE i knew about that it would become rather a big headache, as today... i tried to uninstall it. But to my surprise, after restarting; my pc just didn't started.
Its just showing a sign called- Boot 2>_ (with flashing undescore).
I can't understand how to solve this. This had happened earlier too, but at that time i had instead uninstalling ...deleted all the files of system commander. And after restarting, my pc had given me option for choosing the boot from A) windows ME(which works) ....and B) windows 98 ( which dosen't).

Now how can i restore my pc to its normal state???.

-------------------------------------------------------

I was asking about how to get my pc to give me options for getting it to run to its earlier normal state!.
I wanted to run my pc in safe mode, so that i can use the system restore. But i don't know which key to use now?.
Any solutions?.

-------------------------------------------------------

Hi,
that 'system commander' is a OS manager as well as partition manager.
I thought it useless, so i uninstalled it.
Mine is a compaq armada. Its manual says that it has a preinstalled windows98. The main EXISTING OS was windowsME. In times when i was inspecting 'system commander', after starting the software screen used to appear. In that there were names written like-
A) windowsME
B) windows98
C) fat16
D) fat32
E) ?/?

Then i used to press A, and windowsME used to load with all the existing files. I had also tried to press B, but the system got stuck and nothing happened.
At present only its just showing a sign called- Boot 2>_ (with flashing undescore).
Someone had told me to use F8 key, but nothing is happening.
Referring to the manual, my pc has a Fn key ...which has to be used correspondingly with F4, F5, F6 ....etc. for brightness, screen toggle, battery drain....etc. But there is nothing such written about BIOS setup.
I even have a useless manual for IBM pc, it says various things for using several function keys.
But at this moment, i am not able to do anything useful. I've tried several combinations but to no avail. I can't understand why that underscore is flashing?.
Another thing, i don't have back up cd. There is a back up OS cd for my pc as i have read in the manual.
So today i checked in the market and i came to know that there comes a 'bootable cd' of windows98. I am not sure if that would work. Will it?.
Whats the meaning of win cd???. Is it the same as a 'bootable cd'???.
But how to access that OS selection in compaq armada?.
And those command prompts that you are telling?.

-----------------------------------------------

continued......
-------------------
phantom

continued....
-----------------------------------------------

Hi, i just bought this windows98 bootable cd and loaded it in the starting, But nothing is happening. Again that same -
........Boot 2>._ (with flashing underscore)

And hardly any keys are working.

-------------------------------------------------

I went to a shop and thank goodness the owner had a bootable cd which was very much compatible with my pc system. After startup, in the dos-mode all the files were much looking intact. Running that startup for windowsME was also not a big task, but it got stalled at the 'startup disk creator' followup with only 3% DONE. Even tried for installing windows98, but at the same INSTANT the system got stuck.
Even tried SBminst, but it just shows that the software has been successfully installed. But after rebooting nothing happens. Again the same sign--....Boot 2>._
The owner has asked me that if i want to format the main partition itself and then install windows98 anew. But i am still unsure as it will erase my windowsME files and all others.
And also i wanted to ask,'what if after formatting my system becomes prone to hard-disk failure?.

----------------------------------------------

This happened to be an interesting phase. I booted sbminst floppy at startup and it did loaded. But every hd bootable sector option i clicked, nothing seem to work. Everyone giving error. The other day i bought a bootable windowsME cd and made a windows98 startup bootdiskette from a cybercafe pc. I used the startup bootdiskette to boot my pc and it worked. I came to the dos mode. I've learnt about dos in my college and got a good recall of everything. There are two partitions on my HD, :C and . C is the main, from that windows->option->install-> setup.exe
But during setup, it was showing error. So i directed that the windowsME setup files would load on drive. Successful.
Then after the first reboot, my pc started in safe mode,i.e. a shorter windows screen appeared. Then i transferred all my important files and program files which were in c: drive into d: drive. Even windows folder. Then i again started the setup.exe for that this time windowsME loads in c: drive and everything would resolve as normal as before. But after installation, the pc again starts in safe mode.
I would not opt for erasing my c: partition, so i thought for reinstalling windowsME from my newly bought bootable windowsME cd. But it showed some unusual errors. Perhaps my pc has internal configuration that it will install windowsME setup from its existing software only and not from any other bootable windowsME installer cd!!!.
I now don't know how to resolve my pc to its existing normal state,i.e. full windows screen. I have even read thru windowsME manual, but there is nothing written about coming out of that safe mode!. I've checked system restore, but no restore points were created.
Any solutions?.

-----------------------------------------------

Hi,

Yesterday, i was looking into the 'help' section for safe mode.

There it is written-

If you ended up in safe mode-

Then,

1) Reboot and check if it starts in normal mode.

2) Run 'sysconfig' and uncheck win.ini, etc etc files four in total and then reboot.

- but nothing happened.

3) Uninstall windowsME and again run setup.exe.

-huh but ....

Just the day before yesterday, when i was trying to search for setup.exe in dos mode. I executed it and tried to install windowsME in c drive. But the system was showing some error like winsu-, win.ini- files corrupted or damaged.

Now what should i do?.

Isn't there any utility to check if all the system files are ok.

In my case i want to check the files in drive c.

Any solutions?.

------------------------------------------------

I am still stuck in the last one.

Partitioning programs, boot loaders, etc. should NEVER be installed until all important data is backed up. If you have done so, I would suggest FDISK and reformatting the drive after you make whatever kind of partitions you want.

How big of a drive and what are you trying to accomplish with multiple partitions. Computer make and model might prove helpful as well as RAM.Does your system have a CD burner? If so you should be able to use a KNOPPIX CD with which to retrieve your data files.

You can then fdisk re-partition, re-format and re-install your computer to its original working state.

WARNING! Do NOT delete any Compaq recovery partition on the hard drive.

"How do I access the CMOS setup utility?

For older product models, like the Deskpro 286 or 386, place the Diagnostics disk in the disk drive, reboot your system, and choose computer setup from the menu.

For newer products like the ProLinea, Deskpro, Deskpro XL, Deskpro, or Presario, press the F10 key while the cursor is in the upper right hand corner of the screen. This happens just after the 2 beeps when booting."STARTING SYSTEM RESTORE FROM A COMMAND PROMPT[/url]

THE COMPUTER ALWAYS STARTS IN SAFE MODEDid you create the rescue disks when you installed System Commander ? ?
SC creates it's own boot sector in order to run. You will have to correct this before you are able to go any further.
Boot to the first SC disk and select Repair or Remove options and follow the instructions.

Hello,
I am completely done with all of this, i checked yesterday that in fact...the video card, plug and play sound icons in the device manager were showing an exclamation mark. So i checked in their properties and the drivers were not working properly. So i tried to change the drivers, but the system said that it was already using the correct ones.
So something got into my mind and i thought of uninstalling windowsME, and again reinstall it...this time in drive c only. During setup, a new location was created windows.000 and everything seemed to go ok and then suddenly when the pc was checking for correct hardware present..it asked for windowsME cd key. I am completely baffled at this. How can i bring in a key no. of an OS which was preinstalled on my pc?.

Would u tell me about how to errase c drive complete by using dos command, yesterday i
typed
c:>format
error required parameter missing -
c:>_

and installing a new OS by cd rom.
I was looking into this new cd i had brought windows_ultimate collection.
In it ,i opened windows 2000 pro folder and found it was written i386. Inside that, there were many files which already exist on my pc.
Or perhaps its a base version.
Over it one should install windows98 or windowsME?...i think.
But i have this windowsME setup windows folder in drive c and also its corresponding floppy diskette in drive b inside the pc!.
How can one erase that!, or if one COULD then is it a possibility that the above mentioned base version like that of i386 will also vanish. Leaving my pc as a complete hardware junk!!.
I am now looking for windowsME serial cd keys, and hope one clicks. But i am unsure of how to restore those drivers for the video and plug and play sound devices. Btw other than that everything was ok.

Need solution.

My pc specifications-

C drive-2 GB
D drive-2 GB
No backup cd
Only start up floppy
No system commander backup disks.
It will be very nice of you if you can write in Normal and not Bold. You were trying to reinstall Windows.

Now now, when you reinstall it will ask for the key, just to check that the CD is in the right hands.Hi,
I've checked and install successfully....windowsme.
But coz of all these above mentioned probs that my pc had to go thru, after setup; the previous video card is not in the configuration list.
My previous video card was named something like-
Chips and Tech 69000
Now it is different, so my monitor is showing no colour depth. And my windows size has also been altered.
I have checked into the manual, that when rebooting if one presses key F10....then a section for checking pc config and diagnostic page will open. But i did just that, and nothing happened. It came out as a booting mode choice page.
Is there any software or utility that i can check what is instored inside my pc...like video card...hardware ..etc. And use that software to change the settings and make that video card back in working condition and restore my monitor settings???.
Any solutions.

Why are you booting win98/me........same system Windows98, No. Yes i had used a startup boot floppy diskette to get into the dos-mode. Nothing else.
Now that i have again installed WindowsME, i've created a windowsME startup boot diskette.
Thats it.

Solve : can't open "My Computer"?

Answer»

I clcik on My Computer and all that shows is a white blank window and the computer locks up. I have to do the three finger slaute to stop my computer from running and sometimes the icons reappear and other times I have to re-boot. Any way I can replace a line of data that must be missing that is causing this problem? Thanks.Have you done the drill of remove spyware/adware/viruses yet? What happened before this occurred that might have caused it?

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I ran a few registry programs and my computer is clean. I was fortunate in that the first time it happend, I use go back and all cleared up showing that a line of data had been removed or screwed up somehow. It lasted fsor a full month and was working just fine when I shut down on a friday two weeks ago. On Saturday AM upon boot and attempting to bring up "My computer and or "My Documents" the same thing happened. Why, who knows? But I do believe a line of data has been corrupetd some how and I need to replace same and wish I KNEW what it was and how to do same?Geek:

My GUESS:

Virus, or corruption of the Registry, or hard drive is going bad and corrupting operating system files.

To rule out the last guess as the cause, try this if you have Windows 2000 or XP:

1. Click Start > Run
2. In the Run dialog box, type CMD and press the Enter key.
3. In the command window, type

CHKDSK C: /F /V /R

and press the Enter key.

If the result displayed is "windows has ... found no problems" or zero bad sectors, then your hard drive is OK. If the result shows a number of bad sectors found, then your hard drive is about to die, and you should backup as many files as you can to CDs or floppy disks before it crashes.

Do you hear any unusual sounds coming from inside your computer case, like grinding noises or a metalic pings? If so, this is another sign that the hard drive may be going bad.

Let us KNOW how it turns out.

Best regards,
Doc

Solve : VPN on Win2000 PC?

Answer»

Is there a way to configure and incoming VPN connection on a PC running Win2000? I'd like to be able to access my elderly MOTHER's computer to fix things when she gets confused/changes settings on her email.Yes. But be a little precise please.Look under Win2k Help, it's all there for you to read and follow:

To make a virtual private network (VPN) connection

Open Network and Dial-up Connections.
Double-click Make New Connection, and then click Next.
Click Connect to a private network through the Internet, and click Next.
If you have already established a dial-up connection, do one of the following:
If you need to establish a connection with your ISP or some other network before tunneling to your destination computer or network, click AUTOMATICALLY dial this initial connection, click a connection in the list, and then click Next.
If you do not want to automatically dial an initial connection, click Do not dial the initial connection, and then click Next.
Type the host name or IP address of the computer or network to which you are connecting, and then click Next.
Do one of the following:
If you want this connection to be made available to all users on your network, click For all users, and then click Next.
If you want to reserve the connection for your own use, click Only for myself, and then click Next.
If you want to let other computers access resources through this dial-up connection, select the Enable Internet connection sharing for this connection check box, and then click Next.
Type a name for the connection, and then click Finish.

The above directions are for setting up an outgoing connection from a remote PC. I haven't been able to find instructions on setting up an incoming (host) VPN SERVICE on a PC running Win2000. I've only been able to find instructions for Win2000 Server. Is it possible to SET up incoming VPN service without the Server software?

Solve : File Folder Properties?

Answer»

Hey all:

Using Win XP.

I was following the MS KB article on "How to add Print Directory" feature to Windows Explorer, but must have done something wrong.

Now, when I am in Explorer, and I double-click on an icon, it defaults to the Search window.

If I RIGHT-click, "Search" is the bolded option, which I would presume means I made it the default option.

If I go to Control Panel=>Folder Options=>File Types=>File Folder=>Advanced, I have two options, "find", and "Print Director Listing" (which I added). "find" is NOT BOLD....

Did I mess up in regedit?

How do I fix?

Thanks!
rjbinney..... Is this what your talking about ?
It does'tseem to apply to XP.

This article explains how to add the print directory feature, and how to enable printing of the directory listing from within Windows Explorer.
MORE INFORMATION
To add the print directory feature to Windows Explorer, follow these steps: 1. Open Notepad, and then copy and paste the following text into Notepad:
@echo off
dir %1 /-p /o:gn > "%temp%\Listing"
start /w notepad /p "%temp%\Listing"
del "%temp%\Listing"
exit

2. Save the file as Prin.bat in the Windows directory, and then close Notepad.
3. Start Windows Explorer, click TOOLS, and then click Folder Options.
4. Click the File Types tab, and then click File Folder.
5. Click Edit, and then click New.
6. In the Action box, type Print Directory Listing.
7. In Application used to perform action, click Prin.bat, and then click OK.
8. Click OK, click Apply, and then click OK.
9. Open Windows Explorer, right-click the folder that you would like to print a directory listing of, and then click Print Directory Listing.

Yes. That is it.

And that feature is now listed when I right-click.

But when I double-click, it brings up a new Search window. I'd like it to open the window. You KNOW, let in some fresh air or something.

Is there a way to "Undefault" that? Argh!right click on folder.......open with......chose print....No, you're misunderstanding, Merlin.

I did something that has removed XP's ability to EXPLORE a folder when I double-click on it. Instead, it opens a new "Search" window.

Example:

I start Windows Explorer

I double-click on "My Documents"

A new "Search" window opens

NORMALLY,

I start Windows Explorer

I double-click on "My Documents"

The "My Documents" subdirectory opens up.

But that no longer seems to be the default.

============================

I just did a System Restore. Inelegant, but it worked.Type the in the run box>rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance

or use sfc......scannow.....in the cmd prompt.....or even the f8 key on boot last good config......

it may seem so,<*Did I mess up in regedit? rjb.*>rjbinney......As I read this article, this doesn't work for XP ..... I would try the following ..... Use system restore and go back to before you made the revision . That should get you back to the way it was .

Solve : networkin win xp to win 2000 pcs?

Answer»

Hi,

I have TWO win 2000 pcs networked via a hub, the hub is connected to a router and the router is connected to a DSL modem. The network works perfectly.

Recently, I added a pc runnung win xp to the network.
I had it working on my network for a day, but but when I came home from work, I couldn't get it to work any more. When I click on the icon in my Computer Near You on my win 2000 machine, it gave my the message "the pc is accessable, path was not found".

I think it must be some thing I didn't do correctly on the Win xp pc since I don't know XP too well.

Can someone help me?

RichardFirst did you SET them up on a network? A network enables you to see all the computers and be able to acess them.

If you set the network allready can you see the computers?

If yes, try double clicking and opening them if you get a not accessable or denied it is either

1. Firewall issue
2. Connection issue and open up netowrk connections open the main connection Local Area Netowrk and hit properties on XP see what things you have install and hit the install button to see what services or protocoll
you need

If no then that means the network was not set up properly. Try reinstalling the network on the laptop using setting up home network. Make SURE you have them set up on the same network and have printer shareing and file sharing enable. Try to enable some file sharing on computers and see will it help

Solve : Program Manager not responding error?

Answer»

Hello, any HELP with this error would be greatly appreciated. First of all, I am poor and running Windows 98 on a computer from around 2000 so forgive me.

Very recently, while using IE 6 on my DSL connection, at random and sometimes frequent intervals, I receive the following message:

Server Busy

This ACTION cannot be completed because the "Program Manager" program is not responding. CLICK the appropriate button on the task bar to activate the program and correct the problem.

I tried wading through Microsoft's self help pages for Win 98 and Program Manager (which I have no idea what is) and am coming up with nothing about this particular error. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Solve : AHHHHHHHHHHHH Help!!!!!!!!!!?

AHHHHHHHH! This is driving me CRAZY! I have two Win2K
a PC and a laptop. The two computers are networked via a hub. In term the is connected to a router which connected to a DSL modem. The laptop and the PC are also connected via a Lan. They work perfectly.

Recently, I got a WinXP machine to add to the network.
I can get it on the internet via the hub, but I just can't get it to connect to my Win2K machines.

When I go to My Network and to the Computers near me on my two Win2k machines, they can SEE the icon of the WinXP PC. But when I click on the icon, they give me this message says "\\chuck is not accessible. The network path was not found."

I thought it was the firewall so I turned it off, but it doesn't help. I try to use the network set up wizard to redo the network, but the wizard doesn't work.

What can I do? Any help will be greatly appriciated.

Thanks in advance.

Richard.

Any possibility of ditching the hub altogether?

Have you assigned static IP addresses?

All three systems using the same Workgroup?

Are you using software firewalls?

RayGHi,

Thanks for the reply.

I can't ditch the hub because all my Win2K machines are connected to it. The WinXP machine is on the same workgroup as my Win2K machines. I did assigned a static IP address to it. All the TCP/IP are cofigured correctly, and I don't have software Firewall except the one embeded in WinXP, which I disabled.

One thing is I did get it to work for a day, I was able to transfer files from the WinXP PC to my Win2K PC. But all in a sudden, it stops working.

What else can be wrong?

The computers on your network will use the IP addresses to communicate with one another. If the Internet Protocol is not configured correctly on every computer, they won't be able to talk to (or find) one another. It will be like one is speaking English and the other two is speaking Chinese.

Please tell us (1) the IP address and (2) the default gateway and (3) the subnet mask of each of the computers. My guess is one or more is using private IP addressing (i.e., is using an IP address which starts with 169), and one or more is using an IP address assigned by the computer which is acting as the DHCP server (i.e., is using an IP address that begins with 192).

On each machine, do this:

1. Click Start | Run
2. In the Run box, type IPCONFIG /ALL and click OK.
3. Write down the three items listed in the above paragraph and type the information in your next reply.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Doc, all three machines are using the same gateway-192.168.2.1 For security reason, I disabled the DHCP server on the router and assigned static IP for each computer, my W2k laptop is 192.168.2.2, W2K desktop is 192.168.2.3 and my housemate's WMe is 192.168.2.3,

DocQuote

... I try to use the network set up wizard to redo the network, but the wizard doesn't work...

Richard:

If you tried the Network Setup Wizard on the Windows XP machine, it will (depending on what options you chose) try to (1) make itself the DHCP server or (2) look for a DHCP server on your network.

Make sure the IP protocol is still set to use a static IP address. Make sure you have each static IP address in the LMHOSTS file of the Windows XP machine. Make sure you added the static IP address to the LMHOSTS file of each of the Windows 2000 machines. (Alternately, you may add the IP addresses to the HOSTS file on all three machines.)

Verify that Enable LMHOSTS Lookup is checked (you may find it in the Advanced TCP/IP settings when you select the WINS tab).

Confirm that each machine is configured to use a workgroup with exactly the same workgroup name.

Make sure you have shared FOLDERS on the Windows XP machine to allow the user NAMES and passwords on the Windows 2000 machines to have access to the Windows XP machine.

Let us know how it works out.

Solve : Administrator Password?

Answer»

I have WINDOWS 2000 on my home computer and I was messing around with the passwords, trying to figure out how to lock files. Well I think I made it so now there is no administrator. When I try to go in to the "Users and Passwords" part of the control panel it gives me a prompt to "Specify the user name and password of an Administrator on this computer to continute:". I only have one account on it and it won't let me in. Could I have possibly turned off the Adminstrator RIGHTS for the only user? How do I log in to adjust anything if there is no administrator? What if you log in as "Administrator" (just like that without the quotes) and use the password that was set at the TIME of install?

Failing that you might have to reformat and reload. That's the security feature.I figured that part of it out. The problem is every time I try to open the FILE it gives me an access DENIED error. I have logged on under administrator and I still can't see this file. Why is that?Figured it all out. Thanks for everyones help. How?Reformatted, most likely.

Solve : WinXP or Win2K?

Answer»

Hey,

I have this debate with my friends with my friends, I would like your opinions. Which one is better, Win2k or WinXp, WAT is your thought?

Richard.Akfaka:

My guess is your friends are comparing WINDOWS 2000 Professional to Windows XP HOME. Windows 2000 is much better than Windows XP Home Edition, but pales in comparison to Windows XP Professional.

Windows XP Professional has all of the utilities of Windows 2000, plus many of the best features of Windows Me (it's like a combination of the best of both operating systems).

Windows XP Professional has several useful features that Windows 2000 Professional does not:
* A built-in firewall
* The System Configuration Utility
* System Restore
* Several additional command line commands like SHUTDOWN

Have fun with the debate!
DocLinux.

Of those 2 I would go with Windows 2000. Stable, with none of the fluff.

Maybe you could do a search on this TOPIC in the forum, because it's been discussed, oh, maybe a million times!

To tell you the truth, personally, I like the Win2K so much better. The built-in firewall on WinXp is nothing but a nuisance.

Well, just in general, seems to me Win2K is more consistent with the previous Windons OS, if you know Win98, you can easily navigate through the setups.

But WinXP changed that all, it's confussing.

Solve : Outlook keeps asking for my password?

Answer»

I am running XP and MSoutlook 2000 on my laptop. Outlook keeps asking for my password to ACCESS my mail server. Not every time but sometimes four times in a row. I have "SAVE password" checked in the Accounts set up, and every time the dialogue box comes up I check off save password. It still keeps happening. Suggestions? Is that the correct password? Correct server? It EVENTUALLY logs in right? Have you been keeping up with updates for Outlook?

Solve : Triple BOot?

Answer»

I have 3 partitions, an NTFS for XP Mce, (C),98gb, an HFS partiton thatt is 20GB, (os x x86), and a fat32 partition with no OS, (S), 30gb.

Whenever i boot the PC, Darwin 8 ASKS me to boot to: hda 0, (ntfs), hda1, (os x tiger), or hda5, (fat32).
I want to leave it as FAT32 and install Windows 2000 as a back up installation and i need 2000 for certain apps.
WOuld installing 2000 erase my boot set up?You should be able to install it so long as you select the right partition to install it onto.
However they do recommend that OS's are installed in CHRONOLOGICAL order, XP MAY get a bit tetchy if you install 2000 after XP has already been put onto the system.

If you need to, change the boot sequence with the 'Edit' option in the Advanced> Startup and Recovery function within the system properties.

Solve : Firefox or Internet Explorer?

I have most of my clients switch to FIREFOX. And they like it a lot.Quote

Internet Explorer is only good for Windows Updates...

Actually, you don't even need IE for Windows Updates if your computer is configured for automatic updates.

If you DO go with Firefox, I'd suggest installing the Adblock extension, with the Filterset.G blocklist. I find that works quite well.

I thought Microsoft WAS the inventor of IE.

Not sure what you mean by 'plugin' browser. Firefox is independent of any other software on the computer, and stands on its own as a browser. IE is tied to the Windows OS, which is the main reason IE starts so quickly and Firefox doesn't. If you meant Firefox can be customized by installing plugins (or extensions), I heartily agree. There are a large number of extensions, most of which I have no USE for, but they allow you to customize the browser for your own specific preferences.

There are a number of browsers out there that utilize the IE browser engine -- Avant, MyIE, Smart Bro, Phaseout, etc.-- but Microsoft didn't develop them, nor did they even develop the first browser for Windows.

Mosaic (1993), Cello (1993), and Mozilla (1994) all had popular browsers available for Windows before Microsoft came out with IE in 1995.

When I started out on the net, Mosaic was my browser of choice until I switched to Mozilla, then Netscape (basically the same underlying coding, just a name-change), then back to Mozilla, and finally to Firefox. I guess IE has always been relegated to the back-burner on my computer systems, and to be honest, I haven't needed it.

Sorry...got sidetracked with a history lesson...

RayGKitty here, thanks for the input from a while ago. I have been working with some of the tech SUPPORT on AMD and they got me pretty far. I did reinstall the Firefox and I like it a lot.

I am still in a wee bit of a pickle and not sure where to post. But I am really computer iliterate and have tons of questions but not sure where to post them. Any suggestions? Here are some examples;
1) I was getting help with zip files. And when it did not work I panicked that I had done something wrong so I believe that the support from AMD kind of gave up on me. So I was trying to go back to review because I may have stumbled along the way in this Computer 101.

If I download a zip file such as regseeker.zip and I am not sure that I opened it properly = do I delete it and start again? Or is it uninstall? And how do I know I got it all deleted? Or can I just download it again? Extract or unzip mean the same thing right? and when I unzip it does that mean that it is now running? I am so confused. I tried to read up on this and I am not sure what I am reading without some one to answer me if I am on the right track. Do you have just a questions and answers forum? And is there anyone who has the patience for a newbie to ask some really far out there questions? (MORE THAN ONCE?)
Try to post just one question at a time in the specific forum for that subject. If you don't know, use Computer Unknown. The more information you give, the more likely you are to get a prompt response by one of the resident experts. this is kind of a thread hijack (although it is your own thread) as the subject now does not coincide with what you are asking.

Nothing like a hearty discussion.

I started using firefox for my quick searches, when I just want to jump online. I have it set to go right to google.

When I sign on to MSN, it is set to use IE, which I never changed. I prefer Firefox, but not enough to argue about.

The only thing I find to be a hassle, is signing on to MSN. It must be a huge program, because it takes forever (in computer time) to load and sign on. ('bout 30 seconds to a minute).

Solve : win 98?

Ok win 98 can't read my cd drive but when I am in dos it can. It is telling me that my drive c is running in MS dos mode as windows 98 couldn't FIND real mode When I try to install new hardware it prompts for my win98 cd but when I put it in whatever files can't be found to copy because it can't read my drive so.... Can anyone help me?
My cd drives can't be found in device manager and it says that there is no problem with any hardware. I am running win98 on a Intel. I had xp on this before I screwed up on password so when I fdisk, formatted and STARTED a new install with win98. Before all this happened I had cd writer 128 and sound onboard and sound card but now no sound or drive d. Please could any one help me out here! What is the drive size and layout (partitioning)? What happened that you installed Win98? Did you FDISK and format the drive first? Did you do anything to the hardware like change jumpers on the drive, or monkey around inside the case? What make/model of PC or motherboard, aliong with RAM, etc. The more details on what happened and what we are working on, the better the outcome.

Looks like you need to START again really if you want to use XP and do a re-partition, FULL format and clean install.

In the meantime TroubleshootingMS-DOSCompatibilityModeonHardDisksHave you checked the drive manufacturers site for Win98 drivers ? ?

What caused the bad shutdown?

Have you run the drive manufacturer's diagnostic bootdiskette over the drive and run MemTest86 overnight to see if there are any memory errors?

This hard drive of yours is getting a bit old and might be on its way out. My last drive broke down after four years.

Or maybe the controllers are going.

If you use a '98 bootdisk and enable CD-ROM support will the drive read a CD?

Or maybe it is just time for a newer laptop with XP ?
The machine worked great before I screwed around with the administrators password not allowing me to get in. That is why I had to start all over again. When I installed windows xp not my disk the machine really screwed up after my 30 days was up (activation with xp) So that is why 98 is in there. AND yes if I boot with a 98 with cd rom support the drive can be read. That is why I know my cables are put on right. I went to the site about MS dos compatibility Mode on hard disks that Mac had suggested and I am going to study that awhile. I need all the help I can and I do not give up. Solve : outlook problems?

Answer»

I am trying to configure outlook for my computer at home, I use mail.mywebsite.com for my email, and I want to configure outlook to go to that POP3 account. I have configured outlook express, but there is something wrong, and i think it is one of the default SETTINGS on my outlook 2000, that is making it very unhappy.
the message is "network problems are preventing connection to the microsoft exchange server computer. contact your system administrator if problem persists."
this is my home computer, there is no administrator...
so, i click "OK" then it says "the action could not be completed" click ok.
then i get the microsoft exchange server general box, and it is asking me for the "microsoft exchange server" and "mailbox" with options to check name, ok, cancel or help. the help does not help, mind you.
so, i cannot do anything, because when i put my mail.mywebsite.com into the "microsoft exchange server" and "[emailprotected]" into the "mailbox" or even just "myname" or "admin"....nothing works.
i don't know how to reset all the settings in outlook so i can tell it my account should be pop3, or if that is even the problem. i have no control, no control at all. bummer.

please help! thank you in advance.
peace! Are you using an internet based email address?

mail.mywebsite.com does not have the @ sign indicative of a pop3 account (although that's not a rigid rule).

If so, it's not a pop3 account you should be configuring its an IMAP account or an HTTP account, although this last one is primarily for hotmail types and they need subscription now.

Google is your friend.I think its a registry issue.

Have you messed up with your registry. You can ALSO try the Ccleaner.Instead of going through your Control Panel, try clicking the icon "My Computer" and see there is a list of choices. Select Add/Remove. Try that. ANOTHER way to get there is click Run and in the area you can type enter Add/Remove programs. If you still have a problem, click run, and type in defrag, this is like cleaning out the closet in your computer. Once defrag is complete, try it the normal way again. You might just have a simple glitch. Experience has taught me that if I don't defrag regularly, my COMP runs slow and it affects everything.
Good luck!!!Do you also have a large blank space in the list of programs? (Is the SCROLLBAR button very small.)

No. The installation went smoothly to completion. Well, this has been going in for almost an YEAR. As I have installed numerous applications since then, I have no idea. I already reformatted and reinstalled Win2K twice, to no avail. The laptop is using SP4. You know, I have an older desktop PC with Win98SE - hums like a well-oiled machine! That operating system is truly one of the best unlike Win95 and ME. I am now, starting to think it would be even better than this piece of garbage! And, I always used to think Win2K was so stable...and I have posted this message in so many computer newsgroups and to think there is not a single person who knows why this is happening. I did a search for the error and came up with dozens of items - but no definitive solution has been provided, though extensively discussed.

I appreciate the efforts of whoever responds.

Well, In Windows 98 If there are numerous application that uses the internet it connects to explorer.exe Well Since the installation seems to be failing for some reason.. Do you install anything after finish installing Windows 2000? Or does it ahppen as soon as it is done installing? Maybe you should erase your hard DRIVE to RAW http://www.killdisk.com then using your startup disk, aka bootdisk you can fdisk and format C /s Or yoiu can install Windows 98 and Upgrade to 2000. That should work to.Are you installing all the antivirus, antispyware & firewall protection before logging on to the net. It only takes seconds to get infected.Quote

Solve : What to do with my modem?

Answer» GETTING a Driver for LT Win MODEM is easy Trying to get it to the right COM PORT is hard

On systems with 2 built-in com ports and an internal modem, the only safe com port you can use is one that is not an even or odd number as is the modem. So if your modem is com1 you cannot use com3, if its com2 you can not use com4.

Further, if your mouse is connected to a serial port it works as above with the modem. If the mouse is on com1 then USING the com3 will cause problems, if its on com2 using the com4 will cause problems.

i am confused!Wel lets not worry about that right now just install the driver for the modem and see will it work first. If you get a Port is in use when trying to dial up to the internet or no dial tone that just means we heve to change the COM port of the modem If it is only a driver issue then you shouldn't worry about it UNLESS you get one of those two messages.thank you sooo much! do u think a driver would fit on a blank disk?
It should be able to fit in the floppy is it over 1.38MB?file size: 991.2kB if thats too big ill burn the file onto a blank cdwill that on a floppy???Yes it will fit on a floppy.is an LT modem the same as a lucent?i found a lucent chipset driver download will that work???Good is this the end to the modem saga.Try it and see. Microsoft Windows XP needs at least 256MB RAM to operate at a reasonable speed. Your processor is more than sufficient.

Do remember that DISK SPACE is not the same as MEMORY (RAM). However, both use the terms Mega and Gigabyte.
Yeh you could do with a *censored* of a lot more ram.

Its Cheap to boy about £40 thats $80 for 512 megs.

It will speed up the whole of your computer.

Well worth it.

Looks like shared RAM too, with 32 MB used by the video system.

If you click on the Freeware link below and scroll down to find Everest, download and install the program and see what your mainboard details are. You'll then be able to find out (or we will) just how MUCH RAM can be fitted in your computer.

If you have the make and model then you can look it up at Crucial on their search engine, which will tell you what type of RAM you need and also give you a price.

Ideally fitting more RAM and a separate video card would improve performance, especially with a 2.02GHz processor.
It states that I have two 16mb of ram and two 32 mb of ram so that would mean I have four memory slots and could upgrade them to four 64mb but then again money is tight right now.How did you end up with a 2 gig processor and that litle RAM? Especially with that memory module configuration - 4 sticks=128 Meg?

What computer make/model and or what motherboard?Quote

I was hoping that everyone would have cottoned on to the 512 MB 'theory' as Windows '98 & ME have a 512 MB maximum before changes need to be made to the Vcache settings in system.ini

If the manufacturers would do the same then the same box with a 512 MB RAM module would be sufficient for 2000 / XP.

In manufacturing terms this would produce savings, as there would be no reason to produce modules less than 512 MB and so all the handling and freight charges would reduce too.

Same for video cards. No on board SOUND or video just a minimum standard of say 128 MB video cards so that there is no problem with sharing memory for video.

Anyway my advice is to stick to the 512 MB minimum as it is common to '98, ME, 2000 & XP, as when I took ME off the system and installed XP, my computer had 256 MB of SDRAM, and there was a huge increase in performance as soon as I doubled up from 256 MB to 512 MB.

As I bought the RAM modules at a computer show direct from a manufacturer, I bought three 256 MB modules and found that that was more than enough for my use of the computer even though the mainboard can hold three 512 MB modules.

With three modules there is always the possibility to run with two, so I regard the THIRD one as a 'spare'. (No point in waiting until the modules you use become unavailable.)

This computer says 'Designed for Microsoft® Windows® 2000 Professional' on the front label so the capability for the mainboard to hold three 512 MB RAM modules reflects the design.

If a machine has sufficient RAM then taking things out of the start-up, and generally fiddling around with all manner of settings becomes a thing of the past.

I don't even defrag these days, it all happens ... automatically.

Solve : win 2k installation issues?

This is a very useful site and i'm so glad i found it! Lots of very, very useful information for technicians and users alike
I am having a ISSUE with a customers system right now.
Installed a new 40g hard DRIVE to a computer and am TRYING to install windows 2000 as the operating system. Here is the problem: Windows 2000 GOES through its setup, formats hard drive, goes through another setup and reboots to do the SAME thing over again. When i reboot the system windows doesn't load.. instead i get the infamous "disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter"... any idea what i'm doing wrong??

Thanks,Computer make/model? One hard drive that I assumed is jumpered correctly? Can you see if the files have indeed been loaded on the hard drive? Was it working correctly other than a bad hard drive before?it's a custom pc with an intel pent II.
It is jumpered correctly.
files have been loaded on hard drive. The computer was not booting from the old drive so i replaced it.. and now this.Something wrong with the IDE channel itself perhaps? I assume you have verified that that drive worked fine in a different machine.

As it is somewhat of an elderly macine, it might be easier and cheaper to replace the board with an EQUIVALENT, than to break out the soldering iron.
