Solve : Upgrading Microsoft98 to 2000? |
Answer» Can I upgrade a Microsoft 98 to a later version, say 2000 or greater without spending money on purchasing a brand NEW computer. ?Here are the minimum system requirements for running the Windows® 2000 Professional operating system. Can I upgrade a Microsoft '98 to a later version, say 2000 or greater without spending money on purchasing a brand new computer? If you click on the link at the foot of this post you should take the XP Compatability test. This is ROUGHLY what you would need for Windows 2000 too. My computer was designed for Windows 2000 with a 1000MHz PIII and came with only 256 MB of SDRAM, plenty for Windows 2000 to start you off. The Mainboard can take 3 x 512 MB modules of SD RAM and I have 3 x 256 MB modules giving 768 MB of system RAM in all which is not quite enough on some occasions. The Video memory is exclusive of this and is only 32 MB to drive a 19" monitor with 1024 x 768 pixel resolution using an NVIDIA GeForce video card. So if you tell us your system specifications it would be easier to advise you. I use an 80 GB drive with an 8 MB drive-buffer running at 7,200 rev/min with four partitions. So the answer to your question should be YES, depending on your hardware and SOFTWARE compatibility and the suitability of your current BIOS. |

Solve : Windows 2000 Server Install? |
Answer» Will Windows 2000 Server install over (UPGRADE) Windows XP Pro? I bought a new server this week, and it came with XP Pro. I didn't know until I had installed the server that only 10 users COULD connect at one time using XP. We have 13 users, and we were using 2000 Server. It looks as though I'll have to reformat and install 2000 Server, unless I can do an upgrade. Our server is a file server only, we aren't using any Client/Server applications. Has anyone ever tried to upgrade XP Pro with Windows 2000 Server? Does anyone know a workaround to the 10 user limit on XP?Try downloading this patch incase you have SP2: |

Solve : Wireless card internet connection? |
Answer» USING win 2000 on laptop I wanted to SPEED up my laptop (win 2000) and I went into msconfig and cleared out a load of stuff that I thought was rubbish. I did CHECK against various web sites. I've since ENABLED everything on msconfig Now I can't connect to the web using my wireless card, but I can if I connect the pc to the router using an ETHERNET cable! I noted down the IP config details. I then tried with the WiFi card using those IP details but - still doesn't work One thing I have noticed. When I did ipconfig when using the ethernet card I got IP Address 192.168.1.101 subnet mask 255.255.255.0 default gateway 192.168.1.1 When I did it straight after with the WiFi card I got Autoconfiguation address 169.254.37.306 subnet mask 255.255.0.0 default gateway 0.0.0.0 Then I deleted and re-installed the WiFi card driver and I get IP Address 0.0.0.0 subnet mask 0.0.0.0 default gateway Can any network guru give me any hope Is this in the wrong forum? |

Solve : Windows wont install, what gives?? |
Answer» Recently, my computer crashed, and never worked again. I tryed last known good configuration, didnt work. Reinstalling, didnt work. Why didnt it work? I kept getting error messages part of the way through the installiation saying files couldn't be located on the disk. I tryed a few different versions and different copies of those versions, still no-go! So I got a few different harddrives in it, still no-go. Different CD-ROMs, still no-go. So as a last resort, I got a completely different computer, with all new parts, the only thing the same was my video CARD. Can anyone tell me whats wrong? 3 different versions of 2000 and XP on 3 different computers with 5 different harddrives and 4 different CD-ROMs? Should I give in and buy one of those....preassembled computers?Take a deep breath. OK, it appears i had the wrong kind of RAM in. I added some before it did. So PC 100 and PC 333 dont match. Uh....no they dont . What kind of ram was in the machine when it was working ? the PC 100 SD Ram or the PC333 DDR Ram ...... If your using SD ram ....PC100 .......you can use PC133 as well as it is backward compatible . dl65 Quote OK, it appears i had the wrong kind of RAM in. I added some before it did. So PC 100 and PC 333 dont match. Another example of why the whole story and the history of the machine is important. |

Solve : Windows Media Player Problem?? |
Answer» My computer is relatively new; I do not have a lot of junk on it. When I first got the computer, I ripped a few of my CDs onto Windows Media PLAYER. After having about 500 songs, my computer's sound started getting choppy. The visualizations on Windows Media Player also got choppy. I deleted all the songs, thinking that maybe I have just too much on the computer for it to handle; it didn't solve the problem though. I frequently use Disc Cleanup and Disc Defragmentor to free up space and I have no games or anything of that sort. I currently have no songs saved on the computer but still, whenever I put in a CD, it never plays properly (all kinds of CDs; brand new right out of the package, and burned CDs). When I load my computer up, the little sound that plays when Windows starts (the classic doo-doo-doo) is also choppy. I don't download music and I have virus protection so I don't think I have a virus. It isn't my speakers because I've tried two different sets of speakers. Is there anyway to get my visualizations and music playback right again? It used to work so perfectly :-/ Ewido pops up with an "NSIS" error when I try to open the installer. This could be the result of a failed download or corruption from a virus. So , try this ......Turn off your system restore feature ........then reboot into SAFE mode and run your anti virus program from there. Be certain your anti virus is up to date as far as subscription and virus definitions . Once you have scanned for viruses .....try and install Ewido again . Then I would run SpyBot ......... let us know how it goes . dl65 Alright well props to you guys for the safe mode idea. All four of the programs installed and ran properly. Everything is clean on the computer now but only one problem... I still have playback issues. I've done everything the Windows Help Section has to suggest to get rid of the choppy playback. What HAPPENS now is when the computer first loads up, it is choppy. The choppiness goes away slowly after awhile until it is perfectly clear. So now I have clear music again, but I have to wait for the computer to like "warm up" for 5 or 10 minutes in order for the music to work properly. It also gets choppy again when I open another program (such as Internet Explorer) but it never used to do that. Is that a RAM problem? All I want is to be able to play music while I'm working :-/Shutdown all the little background things running in the right hand side of your taskbar. Now try & play some music. Does it play? Then just re-boot to get back your normal running junk. Do you have Norton installed?I have the full version McAfee installed. Closing down everything isn't making much of a difference. Maybe next time i'll just put the extra 50 bucks or so in to have the RAM upgraded haha I'm at 256, I don't think it should be a problem to play music but I'm running out of excuses. Is the visualizations on Windows Media Player and the music just too much to handle on a 256MB RAM computer while having instant messenger and Microsoft Word open?Quote Is the visualizations on Windows Media Player and the music just too much to handle on a 256MB RAM computer while having instant messenger and Microsoft Word open? I can do that perfectly on a PII-400 with 128 RAM and WIn 98 or 2000, no problem. If you are running XP that may be an issue, but I suspect something else. Have you checked to see what processes are rfunning at start up?Quote I have the full version McAfee installed. Closing down everything isn't making much of a difference. Maybe next time i'll just put the extra 50 bucks or so in to have the RAM upgraded haha I'm at 256, I don't think it should be a problem to play music but I'm running out of excuses. Is the visualizations on Windows Media Player and the music just too much to handle on a 256MB RAM computer while having instant messenger and Microsoft Word open? It could be that programs such as McAfee or BitTorrent are constantly trying to access your hard disk drive. This slows down nearly any computer.I don't know what processes to close. The start up one's are just like my anti-virus and two other things. I'm running MCAFFE Virus Scan as my virus protection but I don't want to turn it off just to listen to music. Is it set so scan in real time?Using windows XP? To much process running to lag? How much ram does it have? You tried increasing the pagging file size?Yes, Windows XP. 256 MB RAM. Lag is probably the issue but I don't know what to do about it.Right Click my computer-> Properties-?Advance Tab=>Proformance options=>Change-> My personal reconmendations: Intial size: 750-820 depending on how many startup items and desktop icons Maximum Size: 900-1000 depending on number selected above Maximum Regisrty size: 64MB By the way you should check your CPU to se if it remains 100% for a long time. How many real time applications do you have? I have to go I'll be back tommorow one of the other poeple can try to help you here [smiley=happy.gif] |

Solve : Quick launch problem? |
Answer» Hi all, I have a problem with starting quick launch icons in the left side of my taskbar. I use Winows XP and have administrator rights on my laptop. Every time I start any quick launch icon, I see message on desktop : "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have appropriate permissions to access the item!" After I see that message, my only option is to click OK button and nothing happens than. Desktop ickons work properly. Could someone please help me to solve this problem, because sometimes I really need quick launch to work properly! Thanks Thanks for fast response, but I have alredy tried it for at least ten times! Every time after your proposal procedure I see alredy written message on desktop ! Hi MAC, here are the answers on your proposal actions: Have you tried TweakUI for XP (Icons Repair Option)? Yes, I tried it before one hour, and error messages when I try to start quick launch are the same! :-/ Did you try to increase icon cache size with regedit?? The answer is the same as for first proposal. I have increased icon cache size value to 4096 and later to 8192, but the error message is not changed. I also rebooted the computer to changes be accepted, but nothing! I am still without solution!! Please help!! Quote "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have appropriate permissions to access the item!" Have you tried to access a shortcut from the desktop before dragging it to the taskbar? Have you somehow locked your taskbar with a 3rd party program? Start in safe mode and try them? Is it happening to all taskbar quickstart icons?Hi, here are the answers on your questions: Have you tried to access a shortcut from the desktop before dragging it to the taskbar? Yes, When I start aplication with desktop shortcut it works perfect. Then I use the same shortcut from desktop and dragg-drop it to quick launch. After that action I see error message "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have appropriate permissions to access the item!". Then I dragg-drop it again on desktop and it works normally again (when I start it from desktop). Have you somehow locked your taskbar with a 3rd party program? I think no, because taskbar icons on the right side of taskbar (near clock) work perfect. Just quick launch icons problem. Start in safe mode and try them? Yes, I have started it in safe mode with network options and I see the same message when I start quick launch icons. I have Windows 2000 on the same lap-top and quick launch icons work normaly with that OS. Is it happening to all taskbar quickstart icons? Yes, it is happening to all taskbar quick launch icons. The output message you can see in answer on your first question! Hi Mac, For the beginning thanks a lot for your support. But unfortunately I have to disappoint you again. I tried to send you print screen of some installed PROGRAMS in my lap-top. But it seems it is not possible to do on this way. So you have to trust me that service pack 2 is alredy installed on this computer. I write also few sentences for general description of my quick launch problem. Quick launch icons have worked properly when XP has been installed in this lap-top. But before one month I had problems with one business application which I have installed. That application has occupied whole C system disk of my laptop (full capacity of C disc). It should not happen because that application was not so huge and I had enough place on hard disk. Unpredictable error has occurred. I could not shut down lap-top from that moment; it was possible to do just physically on button. So I had to disable hibernate option to free some memory on system disc. After that action I could normally shut down the notebook, and after first restart C system disc occupation size was OK. Everything was OK with restart, hibernating and shut down of notebook, but this problem with quick launch occurred from that moment. I suppose that you have full description of my problem now! It makes me more and more nervous. Sometimes I need fast start of some applications over quick launch, but it is not possible… Error message is the same every time. If you have some proposal(s) please write. Everything except reinstallation of XP is acceptable, because I do not have official rights to do that on this lap-top. Thanks in advance! Hi, As I have written I do not have rights to reinstall Windows on this lap-top, because it is official one. I did not perform anything regarding CHANGING processor speed on it. I also think that there should be some solution for this quick launch problem without reinstallation. In all documentation I analyzed this days is written that DESTINATION path for quick launch is in folder: C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch There are quick launch icons present in this folder in my home PC and it works perfect. I checked quick launch paths in afectted notebook and I noticed two quick launch paths: 1) C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch 2) C:\Documents and Settings\\Cookies\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch. It is possible to start (left mouse double click) quick launch icons in folder number 1. But if I want to start icons from folder number 2 there is the SAME ERROR MESSAGE like I receive from desktop quick launch starting. When I see location of quick launch icons form desktop (right mouse click on desktop quick launch icon->properties->general) I see its location in folder number 2. Is there any way to change target of desktop quick launch icons from folder C:\Documents and Settings\\Cookies\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch To C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch. I think it is solution (without reinstalling Wiondows) of my quick launch error message: Windows cannnot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have appropriate permissions to access the item. Is it maybe virus (or something) what forwards me in Cookies folder??? Thanks Hi all, I fixed the quick launch problem. Now it works perfect. I have tried to delete Cookies/Aplication data folder and move it to recycle bin. But every time I have received message it was not possible because it was Windows system folder. So I have just draged&dropped „Aplication Data“ system folder from my wrong „cookies“ path to this correct one: C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch The old one Aplication Data folder was overwritten with new one and BINGO!!! Now it works! But still I do not know how was my Quick Launch folder moved from correct path to BAD (cookies) one??? Cause of problem was not initiated by me. I know the solution and problem seems very stupid now (for me at least), but I spent a lot of time during HOLIDAYS to fix it. Now it will be much easier to work with few applications at the same time with quick launch fixed. We can close this topic now!!!!! MAC thanks a lot for your help&support!!! Happy New Year! |

Solve : Drop down menus? |
Answer» Today i installed firefox 1.5 in conjunction to IE and it was working fine but then it started MAKING my computer slower, so i uninstalled it. But now, when i right click, no menus show up and no drop down menus show up except when i hover my cursor upwards and they sort of materialise. I dont know whats wrong with it and any help on the matter would be greatly appreciated.stareandwonder But now, when i right click, no menus show up and no drop down menus show up except when i hover my cursor upwards and they sort of materialise. What do you mean by " sort of materialize" ? Have you tried resetting IE settings to default ? What happens if you left click instead of right clicking ? Which operating system are you using ? dl65 Well i right click and if i move the cursor upwards, then the options come up one by one but not as a set menu style. They also have big spaces inbetween them. I already RESTORED IE to its default settings but it was no use. If i left click, the tab OPENS, and if its already open, it minimizes. Im using Windows 2000 prostareandwonder Quote If i left click, the tab opens, and if its already open, it minimizes. That sounds correct ..... You mentioned that with firefox installed everything slowed down..... That sounds a bit odd ......Have you swept your MACHINE for bugs and spyware ? And just to clarify .......when you had both firefox and IE installed ...your dropdown menus functioned properly.... and as soon as you REMOVED firefox they didn't ....... That would suggest that perhaps when you removed Firefox .......it was sharing some component used by IE and you removed it ......however there is usually a warning message that will pop up to indicate that some component which you are about to remove is required for other programs to properly function . Can you test your mouse on another pc to be sure its ok ? dl65 |

Answer» Where can I go and download Microsoft WORKS updates for free? I am willing to pay but I found something out about the web, you can always FIND something free, I was up have the NIGHT on google with no success! I made the stupid mistake of renaming my Microsoft works (it needs to be updated anyway) while trying to organize my files and now it just doesn't work like it should. Also I would like to thank Soybean for RECOMMENDING speedfan and the heatsink guide these things were really helpful for me, Soybean you must really know your stuff! thanks again.Microsoft products can not be legally downloaded, especially for free. (except that virtual desktop program for the geeks.) Why not just reinstall the program? And there's the rub...Quote QuoteWhy not just reinstall the program? It doesn't? |

Solve : Windows 2000 pro freezes up? |
Answer» My Latitude C610 will not boot up and freezes on the WINDOWS screen. (windows 2000 pro) I've pretty much tried everything I can think of: console, repair, fixboot, checkdisc,...etc. DST short status test: FAIL Is that diagnostic software for the HDD? If so, it seems like your HDD is failing. Looks like I'll be shopping for a new hard drive. Thanks. Dell has free diagnostics on their web site for their machines. |

Solve : Win2000 Boot Up Error? |
Answer» My wifes Laptop has a boot up error.
Can you scan for viruses and spyware in safe mode? If so, what scanners are you using?I ran Spybot Search and destroy and Adaware in safe mode. THey did not find very much becaus one of them had been run recenty. There is no antivirus on this computer. I was about to install AVG Antivirus shortly befor I started to have this problem. Regarding FINDING an error log. I went into the Control Pannel. I found Asministrator Tools. I went into that. There I found Computer Management under which I found an Event Log which had under that: Application Log, Security Log and System Log. The security log was empty but there was lots in the other two. I couldn't find error logs but could the event log contain the same information. Sherman What happened prior to all of this? What is the computer make/model, etc.? More details are needed.Quote I ran Spybot Search and destroy and Adaware in safe mode. THey did not find very much becaus one of them had been run recenty. There is no antivirus on this computer. More details are needed. Important. The Computer is a Toshiba Satellite 4100x DVD Notebook. I'm not sure exactly what the processer is but from the system info it says X86 Family 6 Model 6 Stepping 10 Guinine Intel 399mhrts I guess mayby a P2 0r P3 400. 6 gig Hard Drive with about 1.5 Gigs free System info says 196,016 kb of RAM ShermanThis is a Pentium 2 400 Mhz processor. These units shipped with Windows 98, so I feel sure that Windows 2000 was loaded later. Do you have a disc for this and a COA to make it legal? In any event you should test the hard drive and RAM integrity. Go to the appropraite drive maker's site for the hard drive, and www.memtest86.com for the RAM test. If this all tests OK, Windows will need to be reloaded. I believe that model originally shipped with a 6.4 gig drive. If the size of this drive is different it could be important. |

Solve : Trouble w/ Office 2000 after HDD upgrade? |
Answer» I upgraded my computer to a BIGGER HDD. I copied the files from the old drive but they don't work. I had to reinstall Windows, Explorer and lots fo drivers for modems and display etc. Office 2000 programs don't work and neither do a lot of other programs like AOL and ACT. I GET two different messages both along the lines of "Program is not installed properly or you need to install from the original location". How can a person add a new HDD and copy all the stuff without all these hassels? Maybe there is some kind of software that knows where all the files for each program are stored and moves them to the new drive in the right directorys so they can be found Most programs ALLOW you to export their databases and saved files for use on another system and then it is a matter of simply importng the database again. Quote How can a person add a new HDD and copy all the stuff without all these hassels? Maybe there is some kind of software that knows where all the files for each program are stored and moves them to the new drive in the right directorys so they can be found. That will be difficult without directly looking at it, you might want to E-mail the software companies that you purchased the software from and ask them that question. Usually finding the files is not too difficult, they should be under the program folder and will most LIKELY be carrying the name that you gave them when saving your work. What you can try to do is copy the entire program folder and put it under your new installation of Windows, but I can't guarantee the programs will actually still work afterwards. If you do not have two PCs in your posession try mounting them both in the same system as Master/slave. The only exception I can make is for Office; it most likely saved all your documents under "My documents".The only way this would have worked was if you would have cloned the old drive to the new drive as is...you cannot simply "copy" a program's files on to a new build and expect it to run. If you haven't wiped the old drive yet then simply hook it up again, FORMAT the new HDD, and then boot the machine using the CD that came with the HDD and there will be an option to clone your old drive to the new one. After that simply remove the old one and hook up the new one as master and you should be good to go... patio. 8-) |
