Will Windows 2000 Server install over (UPGRADE) Windows XP Pro? I bought a new server this week, and it came with XP Pro. I didn't know until I had installed the server that only 10 users COULD connect at one time using XP. We have 13 users, and we were using 2000 Server. It looks as though I'll have to reformat and install 2000 Server, unless I can do an upgrade. Our server is a file server only, we aren't using any Client/Server applications. Has anyone ever tried to upgrade XP Pro with Windows 2000 Server? Does anyone know a workaround to the 10 user limit on XP?Try downloading this patch incase you have SP2:

If the 10 connections limit is RELATED to TCP connetion limit which is the limit in XP, then there's another patch to increase the TCP connections to 50.Many thanks for that info. It does appear that the problem is related to the TCP connection. Do you have the info for the patch that increases connectivity to 50?

My windows 2000 saves passwords that I use online and I do not know where or how to stop it happening. I WOULD like to delete the saved passwords (ebay, paypal this site) from windows and stop it from automatically saving them. But I do not know where to look for them. Yes, I tried uninstalling the drivers and rebooting so that windows would find it and try to reinstall the drivers, but I still get the same error message about the "Configuration Registry Key is Invalid."

I'm afraid it might be a problem with the registry, which I'm squeamish about getting into.

PM stands for Personal Message. To do this in any forum you just double clik a user's name in a post and a screen comes up that enables you to send a message to that person.

GMail is a Google E-Mail account which can be kinda handy as another account for sending and recieving e-mails.

As far as AOL it's good that it works well for you There are alternatives though, that's all i was pointing out.Personal Opinion (not necessarily the views of this forum or its members):

AOL, like MS, has had a strong foothold on the PC users for a long, long time.

In the late 80's and especially early 90's, they provided a great service to those just beginning to use their PC's power for communications. Prior to this most folks used "bulletin boards" via dial up modems. You'd simply call up each bulletin board, make a connection, then communicated, downloaded and uploaded stuff. You generally needed specific software for each site and many charged 'online' fees for use.

AOL, Compuserve and a few others were at the top in popularity and content. They were relatively easy to use and you could read the latest news, communicate with others (e-mail, chat forums, instant messaging, etc.) and connect to the internet.

However, AOL (and others) wanted you to use their services exclusively (they charged by the minute/hour) and sometimes made it difficult for you to navigate away from their site. In fact, AOL wanted you to think they were the internet!

This rather deceptively built up their subscriber base, especially among NEW and inexperienced users. Deceptive or not, they were very good at making their services easy and their software usually worked as well or better than others.

In those days (and maybe somewhat now) the real cost of PROVIDING dialup internet access was about $0.75/month for an ISP. Since AOL, Compuserve and others were CHARGING by the hour (and eventually unlimited), they were making huge profits. Enough of a profit to eventually buy out other content services including Time, Warner, etc. (does this SOUND familiar?), and eventually kill-off much of the competition.

Today, the surviving content providers/ISPs still provide a valuable service to newbies as they really help them get started. Due to competition, their fees are more in line with other ISPs and they still also provide some of the better content (forums, IM, etc.).

Unfortunately like so many others, their software has become almost unmanageable. They try to provide too much with as little software engineering as possible (lazy programming). They want to keep your attention, so they make it an overpowering part of your PC when you install their software. It's difficult to remove, turn off or even understand the processes running in your system.

I have a problem with the entire computer industry. Any new software is designed to run on the latest OS. To upgrade the OS, you must replace the computer. I had a Dos version of AOL once, God it worked well.

AOL, and hotmail seem to do the best at handling spam, a couple of other e-mail accounts I have really suck on that respect.

Hi, I HOPE someone has a clue on this one. I have a windows 2000 system that is in continuous reboot. Every time it looks like it is done booting it turnd off and starts over. My virus proram caught a virus that infected wsock32.dll before this happened. I have tried reloading win 2000, but it keeps doing the same thing. I can start it in safe mode. In the process of trying to get a clean load of w2k it kept asking to put Easy cd creator disk in. When I finally got safe mode running I kept getting a screen that my virus program (grisoft) was corrupted. Since a virus was at the start of this I wanted to reload and run a virus check before anything else. When I tried that the virus program said that easy cd creator was not compatible with the current version, so I removed it. The program loaded and I ran a check that went ok. When I rebooted it worked. It seems like easy cd creator 5.x had something to do with my problem, but in the morning I will still rum the memory check. I am praying HAT in the morning it will boot normally, it has several times so far. Thanks for all the suggestions, will let you know how it goes in the am.

First of all ...do you have all the latest win Xp updates ?
Then you MIGHT try going into the control panel...and click on Administrative Tools .......then click on Event viewer ....... have a look at the Application log , Security log and the System log .......one or more of those logs should indicate what the error was and when it occurred .
Let us know what they said .
Normally when that message appears ....you should click on don't send ( unless you WISH to send the report to MS ) reboot your machine and it should be gone ......What were you doing just PRIOR to the message appearing ?

Wow, you GOT all that stuff using IRQ 9? This is a Win98 machine? Have you updated the drivers? From what I understand, this code reports a problem with the device not working because it depends on another device that is probably not working. With the two drives throwing errors, I would be concerned it is the IDE controller. Could be a ribbon cable maybe. Need more info: AGE, ram, cpu, OS, ETC. Recently, my computer crashed, and never worked again. I tryed last known good configuration, didnt work. Reinstalling, didnt work. Why didnt it work? I kept getting error messages part of the way through the installiation saying files couldn't be located on the disk. I tryed a few different versions and different copies of those versions, still no-go! So I got a few different harddrives in it, still no-go. Different CD-ROMs, still no-go. So as a last resort, I got a completely different computer, with all new parts, the only thing the same was my video CARD. Can anyone tell me whats wrong? 3 different versions of 2000 and XP on 3 different computers with 5 different harddrives and 4 different CD-ROMs? Should I give in and buy one of those....preassembled computers?Take a deep breath.

My computer is relatively new; I do not have a lot of junk on it. When I first got the computer, I ripped a few of my CDs onto Windows Media PLAYER. After having about 500 songs, my computer's sound started getting choppy. The visualizations on Windows Media Player also got choppy. I deleted all the songs, thinking that maybe I have just too much on the computer for it to handle; it didn't solve the problem though. I frequently use Disc Cleanup and Disc Defragmentor to free up space and I have no games or anything of that sort. I currently have no songs saved on the computer but still, whenever I put in a CD, it never plays properly (all kinds of CDs; brand new right out of the package, and burned CDs). When I load my computer up, the little sound that plays when Windows starts (the classic doo-doo-doo) is also choppy. I don't download music and I have virus protection so I don't think I have a virus. It isn't my speakers because I've tried two different sets of speakers. Is there anyway to get my visualizations and music playback right again? It used to work so perfectly :-/

AdAware and SpyBot installed successfully.

Ewido pops up with an "NSIS" error when I try to open the installer. CCleaner begins the install, and while it is installing, the whole setup just disappears. No files were made in the programs folders and no icons show up anywhere.

I have the full version McAfee installed. Closing down everything isn't making much of a difference. Maybe next time i'll just put the extra 50 bucks or so in to have the RAM upgraded haha I'm at 256, I don't think it should be a problem to play music but I'm running out of excuses. Hey all! I really need assistance. My system got screwed up and I cannot boot window98 (SE) anymore. I have reasons to think that to fix it I would need to either
- run windows in safe mode (so i could access the registry or a specific windows option)
- find the way to modify the registry in DOS

problem is windows doesn't want to run in safe mode. When I try it, it prints something like (more or less) "windows98 copyright 1999-2000 etc", just like a normal boot, except it stops there and then return to the usual "c:\"

im no good with DOS commands, but im sure if i could get into the registry to delete the key from where comes the whole problem, that would fix it. I tryed some things, but with no success. When I type regedit, it asks for the files "system.dat" and "user.dat", which i dont know where to find. Any help would be more than appreciated, i need my computer back!system.dat and user.dat is your registry. Your user information is stored in user.dat and the system information is stored in system.dat.

User.dat is stored in the Windows\Profiles directories and system.dat is in the windows directory.

if that can help, i screwed up everything by adding the key "MustBeValidated" in hkey_local_machine/network/logon (if i remember correctly)... now i just cant boot win98

that prompted you to edit the registry in the first place .....It usually helps to EXPLAIN what you HAD been doing prior to the issue as opposed to the result .......

well, i added this key to prevent other people from using my COMP (in PARTICULAR my sister). i had heard it was the only way cause i have win98, which lacks a secure logon system.

since then, my computer asks me a user name, a password and a domain to log on when i boot it. but no matter what i write in the domain field, it wont let me log (not too sure but i think its because there is just no network where to verify the information). i dont know too well the way win98 login systems works, but i know (i have tested it), that theres an option in the settings panel that fixes it.It has been a while since I used 98 but if MEMORY serves, all you have to do when you get the logon screen is click the cancel button and you get in anyway, your just not allowed on the domain.

I try to copy something (for example an txt file, an excel file) on every desktop of the curent logged in user in Windows 2000 and Windows XP, in a Windows 2000 domain. How can I access their username REMOTELY? I want to make a batch file, in which I should write:
copy c:\source.file "\\compDestination\documents and settings\%username%\desktop\"

But if I write that way, it won't work, because it replaces %username% with the username of the current logged user on the computer where that bat is launched.
Soooooooooooooo.... Help :-/
Other WAYS than that I CHOOSED?You would need to use a VBSCRIPT to access %username% into a variable and then build your copy string and EXECUTE it inside the script.

When I boot up my machine, It goes straight in BIOS and says

" During the last boot-up your system hung for an improper CPU speed setting. Your system is now working in safe mode. To optimize the system perfomance and reliability, make sure the CPu speed conforms to the specifications of your CPU."

I have an AMD ATHLON XP 2400.

When I go in my CPU speed setting all the choices I have are MANUAL 1500 2000 and neither of them work it keeps going back to BIOS message.

Mate all i did was shut down the night before, then went to boot up next morning and recieved that message.

I have removed CPU today but only because i thought it was the problem. when i replaced it still had same message.

I am using the 2 DDR banks with 512mb Pc133 not sure on the brand.

I,m not to sure what the FSB setting is in th BIOS. I think it is the CPU/PCI Frequency (mhz)? If it is it is set at 133/33.

Hmmm looking more and more like CPU because had the computer running for a year now and all I did before getting the message in BIOS was shut down. Then the next morning I went to boot up and received the message.

I have read on other forums that some ppl have resolved this problem by flashing BIOS. I have tried to flash but will not let me.

I have removed power Lead and removed battery from mother board for ten minutes and still recieve the same message.

This problem happened THREE days AGO and i haven,t ran my computer since...

I have spent many hour trying to tweak the BIOs but nothing still happening...


I was wondering if my CPU is the cause will my computer still start and go into bIOs?
Like if my CPU was stuffed wouldn't the whole computer just would't start?

Hello knuks. The CPU settings for AMD is 133 time 15 for you multiplier not 33. Make sure you are looking at FSB times Multiplier. The PCI setting is usually another line in you BIOS not in the same section as the FSB and CPU bus Multiplier. The AMD is running around 133 times 15 or 1995mhz get it. Don't go above this till you go read about overclocking. My AMD 2500 runs at the AMD2800 settings stable. 12.5 times 166mhz. Don't do it unless your memory and cpu cooling can HANDLE it. I have always installed Ms Office OUTLOOK 2000 on previous XP machines, to use our local Lan email mailbox system. It is peer to peer. This has always worked and would let me configure SERVICES, to point to the local pc with local addresses. However, I can not GET to the Services option on SP2. The system will let me install Ms Office 2000 as normal, but I can not configure it for local Lan TRAFFIC. Any suggestions?

I tried to turn on my windows 2000 COMPUTER and it tried to boot up, went to normal startup screen for a few seconds, then went to black page with one line of white type that said, Press F1 to re-boot, which it didn't, and press F2 for set up, which is in DOS format, but I didn't see anything there to change that might HELP. I am TRYING to repair windows XP professional on a Toshiba laptop!

It goes through the normal screen for repair but when it is installing devices (at around 34 minutes to go) the system shuts down and restarts again. It never passes this point.

I am not using the original windows professional disc.

Help please as there are documents that have not been backup!!!


I would suggest taking it to a computer service department. They should be able to easily hook your hd up to another computer pull whatever docs you need off and then return your hd to your NB and get your windows running....provided your hd is ok and you have a legal license for windows 2000.Conclusion

The problem was firstly that the internal modem would not work, I tried to reinstall it by it still did not work. The only thing I picked up from the NET was that it maybe a problem with windows updates. So I decided to repair windows. The OPERATION seemed to go OK until the install got to 34 minutes to go, the computer turned it self off and then went into an eternal loop, (34 mins and of etc.). the only thing I could do was put another copy of windows on so I have a dual boot system. I have saved all my documents and emails, I have had to reconfigure the network settings and reinstall most programme but it seem to be working OK but the modem is still not working so I have gone out and bought a PCMCIA modem card that works OK

Ok, so after much decision making I decide there is nothing no my computer I can't afford to lose so I get out the Recovery CDs that came with the computer.

I follow the instructions onscreen, and while trying to run Recovery CD 1 I get the following error:

I no i didn't specify a drive so I assume the computer did. I decide to check the Acer website for Error #88 only to find out that they don't keep a record of Errors. I go to email them and LEARN that emails will only be answered Monday through Friday.

After all this, my laptop still does not work. Can anyone help me?it will work.

what i did is i put the operating system into the drive. then booted up
i reformated my computer
re installed windows
took my driver recovery disk and used it and got the DRIVERS back for the wirelesss netowrk adapter (integrated) and ALSO the side volume controlers
If you really need to you can use the application recovery to recover applications
i wouldnt use it because it may bring spyware/adware/viruses back

Im facing the problem with my pc which im not sure why it HAPPENED. starting fron when I did my printing the files that i had saved into the folder seems unable to read. So I reboot my pc. Once I restarted my pc, the message read "Missing Operation system" I was confused and shocked why it suddenly happend just like that. So i went into the internet to search for help but i only found 1 or 2 answered like boot with win98 and type fdisk/mbr and another answered was reinstall. So i did tried both ways and looks like its not succesful. So at the end i decided to reinstall win2k. What happened was i DELETED g: and alas..... something worse scenerio .....i reboot pc again and when i tried to reinstall again the error message appears as below:-
file \i386\c_437.nls could not be loaded. The error code is 2. Setup cannot continue.Press any key to exit.

I tried few times and the same error again. What should I do?I regreted I delete the g: now I cant even reinstall as well as using the bootdisk. Pls help..

I am RUNNING Win 2000 Pro, and this past week I changed over my AOL8 to AOL9 Security Version with McAfee Anti Virus, built into the software.

Last night, when I went to turn the computer on, I accidently hit the power button twice instead of once. This message came up:

"STOP, A Wait operation, attach process, or yield was attempted from a DPC routine. Beginning Dump of Physical memory"

It sat there on a BLUE screen for a while, and when nothing happened, I restarted the computer and it's been fine.

Can someone tell me what that message means, whether it needs to be checked (something possibly I could do as a computer "novice"), or whether it needs a visit to a computer professional.

The order of events starting Thursday night was:
download aol 9 security
delete aol 8 plus
install mcafee virus and firewall (with norton disabled)
run scans, all aok
uninstall norton internet security
uninstall norton system works
check win update page (no updates)
(service pack 4 for 2000 Pro already in place)
run nti back up now for C and D drives

Friday everything ran fine.

Saturday morning, when powering up the computer, my finger slipped and I accidently hit the power switch twice. The power button however, cannot turn the power off, it has to be done from the Start menu.
That was when I got the error message.

I did a Google search for "wait operation attach process" and it came back with many hits, some I sort of understand and some that I totally cannot understand.

Lets TRY a system restore.... Click Start -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore .... When you click on System Restore, a new window will pop-up... Select Revert your hard drive to an earlier time ... Click Next... Now, you will see a calendar... Click on the DAY BEFORE you installed AOL 9.0 Security Edition... When you have properly selected the day, click next... You will now receive a message sayign what will happen to your computer... Make sure that it is reverting your system to the right day, and click next/close, located on the bottom-right of the window... Your computer will now restart... You will see a status bar, which will show your progress... This procedure MIGHT take a while, so be patient if it does not run quickly... It's perfectly normal... Let us know what happens after...

I use Opera for my internet and I run windows 2000. Whenever i open a file on the internet, the WINDOW normally pops up and asks if I want to open the file or save it. I almost always click open the file, yet it saves to my documents folder ANYWAYS. Is there a way I can stop this from HAPPENING? it is a pain to GO back through the folder and delete files.

I erased windows 98 (by using the command format c:). When I use the boot disk from a, I can GET to msdos prompts. However, when I try to run and install windows 98 from cd rom (using f:setup), nothing happens (bad command or file name).
E: used to be my cdrom DRIVE but it appears to have been bumped to f:, but I assume this is irrelevant.
The cd will spin, and if I run DIR, it will show folders but no files.... a command of setup.exe will not work either. I have a sony cdrom, but sites say the GENERIC driver in win 98 boot disk should run it... and like I say it spins....Can someone please help?Have you used this Windows 98 CD before? [glb]Flame[/glb]I used it once when I reinstalled over top of itself... and it worked, but I still had problems (e.g., outlook and EXPLORER would not run, error messages, etc.) so reformated c and am now stuck.
The only thing is that I no longer had my own win 98 disks, so borrowed a friend's burnt copy.... I can't take it in for repair as I don't have the STICKER either... There is nothing else I can use as I can't purchase it again as it is no longer sold, and my operating system can't handle xp or even 2000....I checked my old copy of Win98. There is another "setup" in the Win98 directory.

Try running: f:\win98\setup

This may get you going again.

K i am a Half-Life 2 mapper so the new program to make maps for hl2 takes up alot of cpu...

ok i get into the program and i edit my map for about 10 min and then windows boxes comes up and says virtual memory is low... Then 5 min later, my internet cuts out, all programs error, cant save any of my work, and the only way to get my stuff back working is restarting my comp.

I accidentally went to the wrong pc at a friends house that needed to be set back to factory setting. When he came in and told me I was at the wrong pc I had just clicked the set back to factory setting command and then i shut it off quick! But...a FILE for windows BOOT up was deleted. How can it be FIXED without the windows program discs, since he has none. Or,,,can it be done without the windows program disc?

back again I would be lost with out you guys on where i left off i was building a PC for my wife the cpu was bad now that is fixed it fires up fine but when i try to install windows after it has been formatted ans starts copying xp I get ' unable to copy file such and such hit enter to try again , escape to skip, f3 to abort blah, blah it acts like bit is a bad cd or a cd rom problem I then tried to install win. 2000 it will get so far and it to has problems copying some FILES they are both older cds and the odds of both of them having spots that are unreadable is slim but with my luck it is POSSIBLE : (
my question is if my start up is fine i can get into dos with no problems everything seems normals other than my windows problem is it possible that something else is wrong causing it not to be able to copy some files and no problems with other here is what I have tried

1.using a diiffrent cd rom deck that works great in my computer

2. burning a copy of xp to try install from that

3.clean and reclean my cd
is there anything else it could be other than 2 worn out cd's ?

I tried xp in another computer it installed fine so i will try to install it on my hard drive via the other pc to find out if it is a harddrive issue or maybe he one i built has bad ram, is there any reason why i cant use a HD from a intell in an amd computer? does that matter? is there a diffrent set up as far as jumpers or anything? i will keep you updated

Using a hdd from an intel to an amd: which one is older? The "intel" or "amd" (which computer is older?) Because if you just buyed a new hdd and you try to install in an older computer it is very possible to be "invisible". Not other DIFFERENCES. Verify the RAM. Check the cd with the kit (on a computer that works, copy the whole cd -- if no copy errors, than your cd has no problem).could deffinately be bad ram,also if you try a harddrive with an operating system already on it the comp might not boot also.check your ram first and make sure you have at least 256.it makes it alot easier.how old is the computer you are trying to install xp on?it is a new build the HD is about 2 mo old I have eleminated the HD , the cd drive, and the XP cd I put them back in the pent 3 so she could have a pc while I tried to figure out the problem with it being unable to copy some files and no problem with others would that be because it is not running at optimum preformance ? where should I start trouble shooting? the ram? here is a list of things that i think it could be can any of you think of anymore?

Are you meaning you are wanting the DISPLAY of everything to look like Win XP? The blue colors at the top and bottom of the IE screen, blue welcome screen and such?

If so, go to "Start" then "Control Panel". Click on "Display". The Display Properties box will open.

In the "Themes" tab, click the check mark on the right side of the display theme LINE. A drop box will open from the line. Highlight "Windows XP" and left click "Apply" at the bottom right of the display properties box. Matter of fact your current display theme your running on now will be displayed on the theme line.

You may still get two options when you boot up. If you do, go into startup and recovery and edit the system startup file by removing the line for 2k. I am running 2 computers threw a Switch. I also have 2 IPs from my internet provider. Both are just WIRED with Cat 5 cable.

Adaware never finds anything but Tracking cookies.

My COMPUTER is actualy running much better after running CC CLEANER and SiSoftware.

Today i installed firefox 1.5 in conjunction to IE and it was working fine but then it started MAKING my computer slower, so i uninstalled it. But now, when i right click, no menus show up and no drop down menus show up except when i hover my cursor upwards and they sort of materialise. If i left click, the tab opens, and if its already open, it minimizes.

Where can I go and download Microsoft WORKS updates for free? I am willing to pay but I found something out about the web, you can always FIND something free, I was up have the NIGHT on google with no success! I made the stupid mistake of renaming my Microsoft works (it needs to be updated anyway) while trying to organize my files and now it just doesn't work like it should. And there's the rub...

My Latitude C610 will not boot up and freezes on the WINDOWS screen. (windows 2000 pro) I've pretty much tried everything I can think of: console, repair, fixboot, checkdisc,...etc.

And I ran the diagostics for dell: This is what come up:

everything was ok but this-

Msq: Unit Drive Self
Test Failed-Status byte=74

When running windows repair this came up:
The following value in the .SIF file that setup uses is corrupted or MISSING value 0 on the line in section (sourcediskfiles)
with key "sp4.cab."

Setp was unable to copy the file sp4.cab.

I fortunately made a BACKUP of my IMPORTANT drives files just 2 days before this happen!!

Is this a HARD drive problem or a windows problem??

It is a WIN2000 Laptop. It boots almost to the end and gives this error window:

It has an OK BUTTON and when you click it all the icons dissapear and the comnputer hangs at a BLANK desktop. The error gives no indication of what Program or process is causing the problem. It appears as if everything has loaded when the error has occured and It is at the point that you would normally start using the computer at the end of the bootup process.

It seams to me that some program that loades up during the boot up is causes the problem.

Can anybody help me.

Can you boot into safe mode?Hi

Yes I can boot into safe mode.

But I don't know where to go from there. That error window says that a log has been created but I don't know where to find the error log or enen what it could be named.

My main PC in still WIN98 so I don't know so much about trouble shooting WIN 2000

I'm not sure if Windows 2000 looks a lot like Windows XP but TRY the following:

• Start
• Settings
• Control Panel
• System Management
• Error logs

I ran Spybot Search and destroy and Adaware in safe mode. THey did not find very much becaus one of them had been run recenty. There is no antivirus on this computer. I was about to install AVG Antivirus shortly befor I started to have this problem.

Regarding finding an error log. I went into the Control Pannel. I found Asministrator Tools. I went into that. There I found Computer Management under which I found an Event Log which had under that: Application Log, Security Log and System Log. The security log was empty but there was lots in the other two.

I couldn't find error logs but could the event log contain the same information.

What happened prior to all of this? What is the computer make/model, etc.? More details are needed.

I am using Windows 2000 professional, OS, which was installed on the machine at purchase. I received a Windows update which was installed yesterday. The computer was restarted after install was COMPLETE. Now it will not boot. I am receiving a Log On MESSAGE which reads, The system could not log you on. Make sure the user name and domain are correct. . ...... I do not have anything like this set up on my computer. It is asking for a PW and there is not one set.... I have TRIED to log on under admin with PW BLANK and this did not work. Windows will not allow the computer to load beyond this POINT. I can not get into the computer to do anything. Any suggestions??When you say "admin", did you try the user name "Administrator"?

I upgraded my computer to a BIGGER HDD. I copied the files from the old drive but they don't work. I had to reinstall Windows, Explorer and lots fo drivers for modems and display etc. Office 2000 programs don't work and neither do a lot of other programs like AOL and ACT. I GET two different messages both along the lines of "Program is not installed properly or you need to install from the original location".

Because I reinstalled Windows (Win 98 SE) I lost all the upgrades, drivers, preferences and improvements I had downloaded from MS website. I'm worried about losing all the same things from other programs. Office 2000, ACT 6.0, Quicken 2000, Turbotax and all the preferences etc. that go along with them.

How can a person add a new HDD and copy all the stuff without all these hassels? Maybe there is some kind of software that knows where all the files for each program are stored and moves them to the new drive in the right directorys so they can be found.
