Solve : IIS 5.0 Printer Management? |
Answer» I am running Windows 2000 PROFESSIONAL on a Homebuilt Soyo computer. I have fully installed Windows 2000 Professional, and I have begun using IIS 5.0 as my HTTP Server. I have a home network, but my computer is not connected to it, because I wanted to have a static IP Address for my computer, instead of programming the port forwarding on my router. I forgot that the printer was a network printer, and I could not install a PCI ETHERNET Adapter along with the built in Gigabit adapter that came in the motherboard, so I cannot access the printer. I am trying to configure the Online Printer Management on another computer's IIS 5.0, after CONFIGURING the router's port forwarding FUNCTION to that computer, but I cannot add or manage any printer's, and there is no help within the IIS Help FILES about printer management. |

Solve : windows 98 resolution problems? |
Answer» hi there....i am pretty new to the computer field therefor not too computer smart but i am having a problem changing my resolution on my computer. It was given to me and the color is way off and i can't play a lot of the games i played on my old computer because the games don't fit on the screen. I am running windows 98. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanking you(anyone) in advanceYou need to install videocard drivers. thanks for the help...one more question...is that something i have to buy and install? again thank you...pulling my hair out here...lol Drivers are free, all you need to do is determine the type of videocard you have installed. This can be done by undertaking one of the following actions:
Does the device manager report any errors? If you have no drivers installed, there will be an 'unknown device' in the list. Perhaps more than one.i am downloading the everest thingy now...lol...told you i wasn't very computer smart...however i did go to device manager and did not see any unknown DEVICES thank you againi downloaded the everest thing and the only thing i could see that had to do with video was it said...Device Description Device Type S3 Trio64 V2/DX/GX (86c775/86c785) Video Adapter is this what you mean?i ran a scan and it said that my video card driver was good....any other suggestions...i went into dispay and tried to change it that way...but it says you have to restart and every time i restart it goes back to the way it was..... The S3 Trio64 is your videocard. You should be able to find drivers here or here. For the latter, log in with drivers as a username and all as password. When you are looking for drivers, try either S3 Trio64 or S3 Trio64 V2/DX/GX Quote ...S3 Trio64 V2/DX/GX (86c775/86c785)... S3 was very popular until they went out of business. The only thing S3 has reference to is a utility "Wins3id.exe' which identifies the S3 chipset. 86C775/785 is the key. It might also be good to know if your graphics card is AGP or PCI, drivers may be different. it says AGP/PCI...does that make any difference...and i went to the sight and it gave me a list of 83 of them...how do I know which one to install....gesh I feel like such an idot...lol...thanks for all the help you are giving me...it is much appreciatedWhat resolution are you running at the moment?I'm still not sure if your problem is driver related. If you decide to try drivers... Here is the link for you. http://members.driverguide.com/driver/detail.php?driverid=8562 Quote it says AGP/PCI...does that make any difference...and i went to the sight and it gave me a list of 83 of them...how do I know which one to install....gesh I feel like such an idot...lol...thanks for all the help you are giving me...it is much appreciated Show us the list. Solve : 0x00000050 Code? |

Answer» Windows 2000 Pro SP4, no name PC with Intel P4 1.5GHz processor. would run MemTest86 overnight to see if there are any errors being reported, after re-seating the RAM module(s). The simple process of re-seating the RAM modules alone often cures these problems. I re-installed the memory and it still keeps me on "death screen" I am running Mem Test 86 as I write. Will GO to bed and see what it tells me in the morning. I checked on the Knoppix and there is a lot to download. Said it would take 5 days...LOL Are there specific files to download so I can try to boot from my cd rom? Quote I didn't have any other programs open except IE 6.0. It should only takes a couple of hours to D/L Knoppix on a broadband connection at most. It comes in at about 695.89 MB. KNOPPIX DOWNLOAD Probably a good idea to ghost the drive so that you have a copy of the data. I use Image for DOS to make drive images, if you are looking for a program to do this for you. A virus is always possible. I have had a LOT of updates recently for AVG. mookey: One of these links should help: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=Page_fault_in_nonpaged_area+0x00000050+site%3Amicrosoft.com&btnG=Search Happy Hunting, Doc |

Solve : Repairing/replacing a system file for Windows XP? |
Answer» Okay, Norton deleted one of our Windows XP Home Edition system files and now Windows won't load and it informed us that we could attempt to repair the missing/corrupt file with our original installation cd. We managed to lose that, so I just purchased another copy of Windows XP Home Edition. The new cd is SP2. I don't know how to check and see if the previously installed windows is though. We bought it about three years ago I think...was SP2 out then? I actually meant the Service Pack installed, not with what service pack your computer came with. Quote
The upgrade requires you to verify your right to install by having you insert a Windows 98, Windows ME or Windows 2000 CD before the installation of Windows XP. Even before you can reformat, if I remember correctly. I have never had to repair a system using either a full or upgrade version, so I can not tell if there will be a difference. Okay, I'll stick with the full install. For the Service Pack, we had the Automatic Update thing running for Windows, so it automatically downloaded all the updates whenever they became available. Does that mean it would have installed the Service Pack? Or was that something you had to buy? And thanks for the help Raptor. Quote For the Service Pack, we had the Automatic Update thing running for Windows, so it automatically downloaded all the updates whenever they became available. Does that mean it would have installed the Service Pack? Or was that something you had to buy? Actually, I think the Service Pack 1 and 2 had to be installed manually. But I could be wrong, I install all the updates manually. Well, we'll give it a shot, what the heck, eh? Here goes nothing... Thanks for the help Raptor. You're a godsend. Update: Well, the repair didn't work. Now I'm trying an in-place upgrade. And the in-place upgrade didn't work either. Now I get a long error message APOLOGIZING for the inconvenience but informing me that Windows did not start correctly. It won't let even me start it in Safe Mode. Now what?Okay, did the in-place upgrade again, and it seems to have worked this time but Windows loads to a certain point and then informs me that: "This copy of Windows must be activated with Microsoft before you can log on. Do you want to activate Windows now?" I would love to activate Windows now, but my keyboard and my mouse are non-responsive. I tried restarting, and it didn't change anything. The mouse uses a USB port, perhaps I should switch back to an older non-USB mouse? But the keyboard does not use a USB port and it's not responding either. Quote The mouse uses a USB port, perhaps I should switch back to an older non-USB mouse? But the keyboard does not use a USB port and it's not responding either. PS/2 has got my vote. In case you immediatly get the Windows must be activated within 30 days when booting it could be that the drivers are not yet loaded in normal mode? Can I load the drivers in safe mode? Edit: The mouse now WORKS, but still not the keyboard. :-/Well, I was advised to reinstall (re-inplace upgrade) the sotware, so I did, and we were able to load and activate Windows and all of our files were there and everything, YAY ...but then we tried installing the driver for our Linksys USB adapter (which we need in order to access the internet) and everything went wonky and now we can't load Windows again. So, we're back to square one...thtbthth. I'm a bit tired of this... Quote ...but then we tried installing the driver for our Linksys USB adapter (which we need in order to access the internet) and everything went wonky and now we can't load Windows again. You have to be careful, a repair installation can never be as stable as a clean install which was preceded by a reformat. How many times have you DONE a (succcesful) repair installation so far?Just once. I saved most of my files during that short Window when we were able to access them, so I may just do a clean install next. I'm taking a mini-break from wrestling with this thing, so I'm gonna decide what to do later on today. Quote Just once. I saved most of my files during that short Window when we were able to access them, so I may just do a clean install next. I'm taking a mini-break from wrestling with this thing, so I'm gonna decide what to do later on today. Were you able to create backups of the files that you would like to keep when you were still able to do so? |

Solve : Right click "open with " option missing? |
Answer» I have windows 2000 installed on my pc. If I right click on any FILE there ll be a option "OPEN with". This appears for all the file types. Now that option is not enabled or its missing. Even I tried holding the shift key. Kindly help me how to enable that option. I think the Open With comes with all file types. it doesn't.Give me an example. In windows 2000 "open with" option comes as a default for all file type. and I didnt CHANGE any registry settings. I know we have to add a registry key but I dont know what to be added. ThiyaguIn Windows XP you can't use it with shortcuts or .exe files. Solve : Sudden freeze-up with Win2K? |
Answer» After 2 Trojans invaded and destroyed my last PC, we rebuilt from the bottom up. I have: Oh, right; it's all my fault ! Roll Eyes So you are not the one operating the PC, then? Please put me through to the person who was using the PC at the time of the incident. Geez, Raptor, where's a SENSE of humor? It is my computer, but as I mentioned I didn't 'do' anything to it. Last Friday night it was fine; by Saturday it was on the fritz. I am not a 'gamer', so there was no over-clocking. I haven't time to do more than check e-mail and do a bit of research now and then. I'm on maybe 2 hours a day, spread out from AM to PM. The mobo mfg. feels that the cpu COOLING fan was inadequate, even though the retailer recommended it. I have ordered an Intel fan, so we'll see what happens. Quote Geez, Raptor, where's a sense of humor? I'll laugh when I'm done killing. Don't tell me you didn't note the sarcasm. Quote mfg What does that stand for? It doesnt'stand for Manufacturer so it must stand for.. Oh, you're naughty. Quote The mobo mfg. feels that the cpu cooling fan was inadequate, even though the retailer recommended it. I have ordered an Intel fan, so we'll see what happens Have a look at Cooler Master. I wouldn't bother with standard coolers or standard thermal paste. |

Solve : XP problems & SP2/IE problems? |
Answer» just purchased a Dimension 3000 desktop. It was preloaded with XP with SP2. I am having a few different problems. I am having huge problems getting webpages containing Java scripts to load. I went to the Java website and did download the newest version of Java. Does that comment mean that you cant get these pages to open or they are slow opening. open IE and click on tools/Internet Options/Advanced tab .........then scroll down until you see Java ( sun) and make sure there is a tick in the box ...then click apply and ok. Quote I also cannot verify my windows on the microsoft pages. I went through the directX download and it seemed to download fine, but then said my brower wasn't capable of continuing that route, so it directed me to another route. When I clicked on that script all it did was open up a new blank window and did nothing. I have set *.microsoft.com in the safe zone. Did you purchase this Dell new ? If it wasnt new it's possible the O/S installed is not legit . Quote Secondly, I get nothing when I click on the Dell help and support button on my start up menu. It loads nothing, no menus, etc... I also cannot search for files or folders, this brings up the window and the dog, but it is a blank blue box, with no menus I can click anywhere and all it does is make the dog scratch. It almost sounds like you may have to reinstall windows XP again ......... unless you have been on line without any virus protection. Do you have the original install/Restore disks that Dell would have shipped with the pc ? let us know dl65 Quote bhaton The webpage will not open if I try and verify windows. Like I said it will go through and download the DirectX (I think that's the tool it uses) and then tells me that the IE will not support using that way to verify it. So, I click on the link for the secondary method, it asks if I want to run the script I say open, I get a new blank window and nothing else happens. I checked to make sure that the Java box was checked. I thought that maybe I had to have the newest Java to get it to run, so I did that (I did all of this verification on my computer at work that has Windows 2000 on it with no problems). The computer is new, not a refurbished model. I ordered it directly from Dell, just got it last Friday. I was wondering if there was something I did (or couldn't figure out) that was causing the problem or if it wasn't installed correctly from them for some reason. It was having those problems before I ever got online and I did make sure all my virus software was up and running before I did log online. They didn't ship a restore disk with the computer, but I'm going to call them and see what they can do. Thanks for all the help and suggestions and will try the mozilla firefox Which Anti-Virus program are you using, and are you ALSO using the customary anti-Trojan freeware such as AdAware SE, SpyBot SD & SpywareBlaster? Quote Which Anti-Virus program are you using, and are you ALSO using the customary anti-Trojan freeware such as AdAware SE, SpyBot SD & SpywareBlaster? I have Norton Utilities. I had installed the AdAware SE as I can get it through the University for FREE, but thought it might be part of the problem so I uninstalled it, but I can reinstall it if that's not a problem.bhaton....... Quote I had installed the AdAware SE as I can get it through the University for free, but thought it might be part of the problem so I uninstalled it, but I can reinstall it if that's not a problem. Ok ....... first of all you can D/L Ad-Aware SE free online . then ....I am assumming this issue is only occurring when you are online at the university ...is that correct . If thats the case there may be nothing wrong with your pc ...it could well be the network you are connecting thru. I very much doubt Ad-Aware is causing the issue .......reinstall it . Did I read you correctly when you said you didnt receive the o/S disks from Dell ....... if thats the case .....get on the phone to them ASAP ......... Did you receive any disks from Dell with your pc ? Quote It was having those problems before I ever got online and I did make sure all my virus software was up and running before I did log online. There is no way you could have had those problems with java .......... unless you were on line ......... AND you claim you weren't let us know dl65 Quote bhaton....... I get the AdAware Professional SE through the university, not sure if that's any different than what's free online. They have the security programs they recommend for us to install on all computers on campus, so I just went there first I guess. I can dial in to the university's server from home for free so that's why I set it up to do that. Maybe I should just try the free trial for MSN or AOL and see if I still get the same problems? Yes I did not get any Windows XP CD from dell. Online it says that there is a PC Restore function on all new dells so that I would not need it, so I didn't order it (Looking back probably a dumb decision). I received 3 CDs with the computer, one for the monitor, printer, and Corel Wordperfect. I have read a lot the past few days about some problems with IE and Java with the new SP2 pack, so I figured that was the problem. Sorry, I meant the problems with the support and help system from dell not loading and unable to search for files and folders in XP, basic windows functions not working properly. I should have clarified that. After all my virus software was installed I logged online and then went to microsoft to get windows verified, that's when the problems started. I'm really sorry, I've never had any problems like this that I had absolutely no clue how to fix before. Thanks for all of your help!bhaton.... I'm a bit curious as to what country you got your Dell in ....... because , if you have a hard drive failure ...say after your 1 yr. warrantee has lapsed , what do you use to reinstall your operating system . You dont . Dell usually ships one of their propritory cds with all new pcs which has install / restore files on it . Quote I get the AdAware Professional SE through the university, not sure if that's any different than what's free online...... the free version of Ad-aware SE is the personal version .....the pro version is just slightly differant . Quote I have read a lot the past few days about some problems with IE and Java with the new SP2 pack, so I figured that was the problem What you have read is probably related to security issues ..........however if you have the latest M/S updates .....( make sure your auto updates is ENABLED ) You shouldn't have problems with IE ........and SP2 provided it's properly up dated works flawlessly. Quote Sorry, I meant the problems with the support and help system from dell not loading and unable to search for files and folders in XP If you want to search for files in XP ........simply click on start / search ......and when the search window opens enter your search info in the appropriate box then press search ........ you dont need Dell for that . I would be phoning Dell and have them.... either tell you how to correct these issues or DEMAND a replacement pc or a full refund . dl65 Quote bhaton.... I live in the U.S., and ordered in in the U.S. I just got the computer last week. This is the ordering option (I cut and pasted it directly from the dell website) when I placed my computer order: PC Restore recovery solution by Symantec® comes pre-installed on your computer's hard drive. If you require CDs to perform advanced tasks chose the CD for the operating system you selected above. I didn't figure that I'd be doing much advanced tasks, so I didn't order the CD (like I said really dumb looking back). I can't make sure I have the most current updates. It will not let me verify my windows software, so I cannot get past that point. I wanted to set it to check for updates daily, but I can't get to that point either. Microsoft.com will not even scan my computer to see if I need updates. Searching for files..when I do click on that I get a blank screen, no input boxes to type file or folder names, nothing. I am able to browse folders and files, just like the my computer function, but where the input boxes are supposed to be on the left hand side of the window is solid blue, with a dog at the bottom. I try to click on it thinking that will do something, but it will not. I will be on the phone with Dell as soon as I get home from work tonight. Thanks for you help.A couple of links for you. You may need them one day. http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/kb/en/document?dn=1090151 If the Dell PC Restore function no longer works automatically, there are alternatives that may work. http://www.goodells.net/dellrestore/fixes.htm Just a little advice. I learnt never to rely on the OEM Restore function because if the drive should fail you lose the restore image mentioned in these articles. Difficult when you have a computer which is still under warranty but anyway here goes. I don't know if the DELL Restore allows you to choose which software to install, like Packard-Bell's Smart Restore, or if you just have to install everything. If you do get an option I would probably choose not to install the anti-virus program if it can be installed at a later time as it can affect partitioning operations. Your having problems already so, if it was me, I would call DELL support. If you don't get them saying to do a factory restore I'll be surprised. I would do it off-line with all peripherals and your modem disconnected. When it is done, and take any option to partition if it is offered to you, and before going online I would ensure that everything is working, Help and Support, Search, and any and all other program functions. Re-boot and run through it all again, still NOT connected to the internet and with NO updates applied. Run chkdsk and defrag the drive. If you managed to partition the drive the next bit is not a problem. If this option was not offered then there are third party programs which will do this job for you. I use BootIT NG and Image for Windows/Image for DOS because these programs are good value and regularly updated plus the service is exemplary to date. Make a drive image of this basic installation on CDRs or a data DVD. If the Restore capability ever fails, which does happen, you can use these to restore the system. If you ONLY use the word - user - to do the install then anyone else can do the same when you come to sell the machine on using these disks. Now add your anti-virus, make sure that the firewall is on connect the modem and FIRST OF ALL update the anti-virus program and run a full scan as it takes just one second to get infected. Add the freeware program AdAware SE update that and run a full scan. Now go to the Microsoft update site and fully update the operating system. Get everything to your liking and when it is make a - second - drive image. This will be your working basic restore image. From those articles you'll see that people do precisely this. With Packard-Bell you can - make - the three MASTER CDs from the hidden partition, run checksums on them to verify that the data is good and then the partition is revealed as - Restdone D: With PB you really need to delete the partion, re-partition the drive and re-format before re-installing. This way you gain 4 GB of drive-space. Maybe it is the same with DELL and, hopefully, an experienced DELL user will give you his/her ideas on recovery and drive imaging. Last time I deleted a hidden partition I use BootiT NGs partition resizer to shrink the drive down to a reasonably sized drive C: (10240 MB in this case) and then was able to use XP's Disk Management to make an Extended Partition with a Logical drive D: which could then be formatted from the Disk Management console as well. DELL has a hidden diagnostic partition as well it appears. You should NOT delete that one! Just remember your warranty. If you check out the DELL site you can punch in your Service TAG number and get a reinstallation guide. http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winxp/1126302448 |

Solve : win2000 install misses files ????? |
Answer» Hi, Ok, I understand that. But the one and only thing which I have changed is the mainboard. Changing the motherboard without reformatting can throw the OS into chaos. You usually find that there are updated drivers and additional drivers in the latest service pack. If the CD has the latest service pack then so much the better. |

Do your memory "RAM sticks" fit in white sockets like this: or in brown sockets like this: If white, then your system uses SIMMs (Single Inline Memory Modules) and there is a good chance that you may not be able to add more memory, as all of the slots are likely full. If brown, then your system uses DIMMs (Dual Inline Memory Modules) and you will likely be able to increase your TOTAL memory by purchasing another DIMM or two. Windows XP needs at least 128 MB to run properly, twice that if you have a high-speed Internet connection, play games, or work with a lot of graphics or photos. To answer your question, how to get Windows Me back depends on how Windows XP was installed. Please let us know what file system is used, so we may help you further: 1. Click Start > My Computer. 2. Right click LOCAL Disk (C:) and CHOOSE Properties from the context menu. 3. In the Properties dialog box, select the General tab. 4. You will see Type is shown as Local Disk. Under that, you will see the File System. Let us know what the files system is. Regards, Doc Thanks to everyone who has reponded. My system is NTFS, only has 4GB hard drive, 91MB RAM. Used to have 98 SE on it, until it just quit working. Was told by Microsoft that they stopped support on 98 SE. Tried ME but couldn't get it to detect my monitor, speakers or modem. I can do alot right now, but when I'm online it stops responding or when I have too much going at one time. I plan on just buying a new one and giving my kids this one. All I need to know is can I save things, like my email messages, but install older OS, or do I have to just start from scratch?Sorry, forgot to mention I am running XP right now.It is a Compaq Presario, an older one. It is a desktop, not a laptop. I know I need to add more mem, but have decided to buy new one from my Internet Provider. They build very reasonable priced ones, much better than this one. My kids can upgrade the mem. after they get it.save the hard drive if you wish to but another pc but .....it maybe old but still upgradeable.......visit hp website.........you never know you may save bucks...in exchange/swap......Thanks Merlin. I am sure I could upgrade this myself, but here are the specs for the one I am looking at. Let me know if this seems like a good computer. Will cost $359, $309 if I USE my own XP OS. New Computer System: Value - New AMD Sempron 2300+ CPU 384k-Cache, 256MB RAM, 80GB Hard Drive ATA133 7200RPM, 3D Video up to 64MB, AGP8x slot, 52x CD Burner/Player with easy software, 56k Modem, Optical Laser Mouse 3 button and scroll wheel, Keyboard, Stereo Speakers, 6 USB 2.0 ports, 2 PCI slots, Network/DSL port, Surge Protector with modem protection, Windows XP Home, Anti-Virus & Anti-Spyware Software, Web Browser, E-Mail, instant messaging (ICQ, AIM, MSN, Yahoo!, IRC), Internet Telephone & Voice Chat software with microphone, Office XP compatible software, budget/check management, games, etc. Easy System Restore CD. Lifetime Labor Warranty* on part replacement for as long as you remain an iPro/iClub Member. Parts Warranties* up to 3 years by respective parts manufacturers. Test drive this PC today at our downtown Richmond office. {upgrades: RAM: 512MB +$34 or 768MB +$79 or 1GB +$109, Floppy Drive +$9, CD Burner/DVD Player +14, DVD/CD Burner/Player with dvd copy software +$29, DVD/CD Burner/Player with "DVD+R DL"(double size disc) support and dvd copy software +$49, 3D Video for gaming ATI RADEON 9250 chipset 128MB AGP8x +$59, 3D Video for high-end gaming (like Doom3) ATI RADEON 9550 chipset 128MB full-DX9 AGP8x +$79, Subwoofer +$9, others above, reduce price by $50 if you bring your own windows xp}still keep the old pc..........is may come use one day. Thanks Merlin. I plan on giving it to my kids. Does the new one sound like a good deal or is that too much? I don't know alot about buying computers. I just mainly have gimme computers. Quote Cost $359, $309 if I use my own XP OS. Looks like good value for money. Didn't mention a monitor I see. You should definitely opt to have the floppy drive as there are a number of recovery tips you can use from a floppy drive which you can't do without one. $9 As much RAM as you can afford really. Certainly go up to 512 MB which is the - practical - minimum for XP. What do you want to do when it comes to CD-R or DVD+R? If you want to do work on DVDs and opt for the DVD double layer burner then you should also consider going up to 1024 MB of RAM. Redmond, Seattle I suppose? Are you interested in Windows Vista at a later date? What about gaming/graphics, etc. Might as well take a better video card with 128 MB video memory. What do you plan on doing for a monitor? 19" flatpanel.I wouldn't quite bother playing games on a Sempron +2300. Especially not Doom 3.I still prefer Intel Processors. Especially after seeing film of AMDs going up in smoke.Well, ya'll lost me back there somewhere. Don't really know the difference between an Intel or AMD, or what Sempron +2300 is. All I do know is that what I have now is too slow for me and I go w/Macs opinion that the one I'm looking at seems like a good deal. I am what you would call a self-taught computer user. It doesn't come easy or natural to me. Do plan on opting for the 512MB but not the DVD-R. Will probably use my old monitor, Gateway 2000 Vivatron 15 until am ready to buy a flat screen. Don't know what Windows Vista is. Not sure what you mean by Redmond, Seattle?? If it is where this computer is located it is in Richmond Ky. The Internet Club, my provider. Thanks for the input. I look to you experts to help the less fortunate-barely-computer-literate world. |

Solve : Windows 2000 crash AFTER autoupdate from MS.? |
Answer» Yesterday we accepted an auto update from MS. After the update our desktop pc running on Windows 2000 crashed and burned. We spent ALMOST 6 hours on the phone with a MS tech yet were not able to resolve the issue. We tried to re-install the W2000 OS, but it would not work. Kept getting a 'cant find file' error code (NT5.cat). Needless to say, it's very frustrating. Has anyone else RUN into this problem? Found a solution? Please send HELP!! Quote or the full oem.. Is there such a thing as a half OEM then? Or even a quarter of an OEM? I'd love to see it. Do you cut the disk in half or do they only copy half of the software onto the disk? See the following article for information on how to reformat and reinstall: How to erase my hard disk drive and start over Is there such a thing as a half OEM then? Or even a quarter of an OEM? I'd love to see it. Do you cut the disk in half or do they only copy half of the software onto the disk raptor. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Yes they do! Its called a recovery cd... ...... That certainly is creative thinking! And a quarter of an OEM must be a boot diskette... Someone's FANTASY has run amok.. bavk to the posters : QUESTION........what win2k disk have you got......boot pc to SAFE mode.....hold down the f8 on boot.....goto the the control panel/add/remove....and uninstall windows quick fix updates....and re-boot........but disconnect from the net.....now the hassle or re-installing winupdates.....you could slipsteam them.....or ask mSoft for the spi/2 disks... "You can wash them in luke-warm water with two drops of mild soap solution mixed in and a soft sponge, then gently dry with a clean linen cloth. Doing this simple task very often solves the problem of read errors from the CD and ensures a smooth install." Solve : win 2000, can't get past ctr-alt-del? |
Answer» I cannot get logged on with either admin or any user acct. it tries to load personal settings then immediatly goes to saving settings and back to ctr-alt-del. it does this in safe mode also.sounds like you need to do a system restore. Now on my PC if you tap F11 during the booting of the pc you can get into System Restore. sounds like you need to do a system restore. ...Ross "System Restore" is not a feature of Win2k, only WinME and WinXP. You don't SEEM to have many options. You could hit F8 on bootup before Windows STARTS to load & choose 'last good configuration'. You may loose some drivers but your accounting STUFF should be OK. You could boot with the w2k disk with the cdrom set to first boot in bios and look for a 'repair' option. I haven't tried this but someone else may be able to tell you what the options are. I guess you could hook the drive to another computer and download your accounting stuff? This sounds like a lot of work to me. ANYONE got any ideas?Have you or any one else added a newhardware to the system? lately...Bugaruso: Or, if not hardware, then what else may have changed just prior to this behavior? For example, did anyone install a new program or change any of the Windows settings? Knowing this will help us find the cause and suggest a cure. Regards, Doc |

Solve : Windows 2000 recycle bin problem? |
Answer» I am running Windows 2000. When I OPEN the recycle bin I can't see any of the items in there. I have the "delete items permanently instead of recycle bin" check box cleared. Thanks for your helpWhat are you asking us?He is asking why the contents of the recycle bin are not showing even though files are supposed to be inside. "delete items permanently instead of recycle bin" check box cleared. It's cleared so that the deleted files go into the recycle bin. Clear as mud, typical windows, push enter to exit, push start to shutdown What Fred said. The only thing that I have in it now is a shortcut that I didn't need. Where is the recycler folder at? Quote The only thing that I have in it now is a shortcut that I didn't need. So there is something in there? If you delete a file now, does it show in the recycle bin? Are you running disk cleanup as a scheduled TASK? Disk cleanup, along with many 'aftermarket' things will empty your recycle bin.Yes there is a short cut icon in there and no I haven't RUN any of the cleaners since I put it in there. I think it started when I started using a theme...maybe I'll try removing the theme. I wouldn't think that would affect it though... Quote If you delete a file now, does it show in the recycle bin? No"You can also delete items by dragging them into the Recycle Bin. If you press SHIFT while dragging, the item is deleted from your computer without being stored in the Recycle Bin." How do you delete files?I just drag them to the recycle bin. Quote I just drag them to the recycle bin. With the shift key pushed or possibly the Caps lock on?I don't think so...Try DELETING a file by right clicking on it & selecting delete? |

Neither. It is most likely you who tried to overwrite a previous installation of Windows (XP) without reformatting the Hard Disk Drive and/or partition(s) first. Solve : Frustrating Program Error? |
Answer» This is a frustrating one, this happens alot when I want to run some programs or an installer (e.g. The Sims, Theme Hospital, countless other games and software, almost everything I try) I GET this error
See this article for the solution. Why this is happening with Windows programs is strange since autoexec.nt sets up the 16-bit environment. Also the fact that your Windows directory is Winnt indicates some remnants of Win2000 remain. To fix run the following from the command prompt: copy d:\winnt\repair\autoexec.nt d:\winnt\system32 After you copy the file, find it in Windows Explorer, click PROPERTIES and lock it down by giving it a read-only attribute. This only fixes the symptoms so a virus and antispyware scan might be helpful. Hope this helps. |
