I changed a Windows 2000 (xxxx.net) domain to a default "workgroup" workgroup.
I THOUGHT the .net was keeping me from accessing websites.
Now my account and PW won't even let me logon to the local PC.

Does anyone have a work around for this?

Change the settings back to EXACTLY what they were before.  If you are not sure what the settings were, stop what you are doing and CONTACT your network administrator.  Be completely honest with her and explain what you did to create the problem (when she TRIES to fix the problem, she is going to know you caused it ANYWAY and being frank with her will make it easier for her to fix things).

I am running Windows 2000 PROFESSIONAL on a Homebuilt Soyo computer.  I have fully installed Windows 2000 Professional, and I have begun using IIS 5.0 as my HTTP Server.  I have a home network, but my computer is not connected to it, because I wanted to have a static IP Address for my computer, instead of programming the port forwarding on my router.  I forgot that the printer was a network printer, and I could not install a PCI ETHERNET Adapter along with the built in Gigabit adapter that came in the motherboard, so I cannot access the printer.  I am trying to configure the Online Printer Management on another computer's IIS 5.0, after CONFIGURING the router's port forwarding FUNCTION to that computer, but I cannot add or manage any printer's, and there is no help within the IIS Help FILES about printer management.

Windows 2000 Pro SP4,  no name PC with Intel P4 1.5GHz processor.

I am having the toughest TIME with the this code.  I was downloading a .rar file;  I scanned it for viruses, then tried to open it.  Immediately, my SCREEN went black and then to the "blue screen of death".  It had this code:

I am not that literate with crashed computers, but I think this means something bad.      I cannot get into safe mode at all.  It gives me the same message.  I tried to start it with a boot disk, but the same message.  I am at a loss.  Besides reformatting, does anyone know what my options are?

Also,  If I can find a way to back up my files, I don't mind reformatting.

I would run MemTest86 overnight to see if there are any errors being REPORTED, after re-seating the RAM module(s). The simple process of re-seating the RAM modules alone often cures these problems.

Then run the drive manufacturer's drive diagnostic diskette to see what that reports, as it might be time to get a new drive. (My last drive failed after four years.)

Or, TRY burning a KNOPPIX CD. Knoppix is an operating system which will run from the CD-Rom drive without installing it to the hard-drive.

You can then use the built in burning program K3B to burn all of your data to removable media.

(Don't rely on CD-RWs, btw.)I didn't have any other programs open except IE 6.0.  Can I pull the hd out of the computer and ghost it on another machine?  (that's if the ram re-install doesn't work.  BTW, I have 256 installed on the machine. Also, I am worried about a virus that might be causing this.  I opened a .rar file and it immediately went to "Death Screen".  Could that be a possible virus?

Okay, Norton deleted one of our Windows XP Home Edition system files and now Windows won't load and it informed us that we could attempt to repair the missing/corrupt file with our original installation cd. We managed to lose that, so I just purchased another copy of Windows XP Home Edition.

My question is: before I open the box and destroy any chances of returning the item, does it matter that we are attempting to repair with a different installation cd than the one that was originally used to install Windows on our computer?

If yes, I would take the risk. You are going to need an operating system CD in case you are unable to repair the system and you need to reformat and reinstall.

For the Service Pack, we had the Automatic Update thing running for Windows, so it automatically downloaded all the updates whenever they became available. Does that mean it would have installed the Service Pack? Or was that something you had to buy?

The mouse uses a USB port, perhaps I should switch back to an older non-USB mouse? But the keyboard does not use a USB port and it's not responding either.

...but then we tried installing the driver for our Linksys USB adapter (which we need in order to access the internet) and everything went wonky and now we can't load Windows again.

Just once. I saved most of my files during that short Window when we were able to access them, so I may just do a clean install next. I'm taking a mini-break from wrestling with this thing, so I'm gonna decide what to do later on today.  

I have windows 2000 installed on my pc. If I right click on any FILE there ll be a option "OPEN with". This appears for all the file types. Now that option is not enabled or its missing. Even  I tried holding the shift key. Kindly help me how to enable that option.

After 2 Trojans invaded and destroyed my last PC, we rebuilt from the bottom up.  I have:

Machspeed PM2MP mobo
Intel CELERON D335 2.8 GB processor
Samsung 80 G hdd with a Maxtor 40 G backup
1 GB RAM via 2 chips (one is Rosewill, one is PQI Power).

Friday night the system was running smoothly.  Saturday morning it wouldn't even jog!

The 'reset' button gets me to the sysinfo page and freezes.  Turning it off gets me to various stages of "Starting Windows", depending on how LONG it's off.  It hasn't gotten beyond the "Windows 2000 Pro is starting".  I F8-ed for a Safe Mode or Last known Good Config, but the arrows won't move.  

I've had previous problems with RAM (one of the new sticks was bad), so I pulled  them and switched slots; pulled one out entirely; tried a start-up with a stick in in the NEAR slot, then in the far slot...

I run Ad-Aware daily and have Trend Security for virus.  I down load nothing but up-dates for anti-virus, and security settings are all on med. high.

Any ideas?I would recommend a Linux live CD to see if it is hardware, or Windows related. Slow will be relative as it would be running the operating system from the O/S, but it would work (or not).

Actually, I did nothing to the system, other than turn it on.  I'm not a gamer; don't do photo-shop, etc.  

The RAM was bad and the mfg. replaced it.  I took the kit'ncaboodle to a pro when I couldn't get it to even load an OS.

It's all moot, though, since I spoke to Cust.Svc and they're replacing the CPU.  Even with their suggested CPU fan, an intake fan and an exhaust fan two inches from the CPU, the temp. hit 206.  First thing I checked was fan operation, and all are fine.

The system was brand-new, bought the parts in July! Quote

The mobo mfg. feels that the cpu cooling fan was inadequate, even though the retailer recommended it.  I have ordered an Intel fan, so we'll see what happens

After installing a SHAREWARE program, I can no longer click on an excel spreadsheet and have the spreadsheet automatically load
excel and run the spreadsheet.  I tried reinstalling excel - no HELP.  I looked at the file associations and they all seem ok.  I am USING excel 97 and Windows 2000.  Any ideas on how to fix this?Bill:

You may restore a backup (if you made one with the MICROSOFT Backup utility prior to installing the software).

You may also restore a copy of the registry (if you exported one prior to the installation).  

You may also try uninstalling the program that caused the problem.

just purchased a Dimension 3000 desktop.  It was preloaded with XP with SP2.  I am having a few different problems.
First, I am having huge problems getting webpages containing Java scripts to load.  I went to the Java website and did download the newest version of Java.  I installed it and by going back to the Java website it confirms that it installed correctly.  If any link contains a javascript nothing happens when I click it, I get something like javascript() on the bottom of the browser.  I also cannot verify my windows on the microsoft pages.  I went through the directX download and it seemed to download fine, but then said my BROWER wasn't capable of continuing that route, so it directed me to another route.  When I clicked on that script all it did was open up a new blank window and did nothing.  I have set *.microsoft.com in the safe zone.

Secondly, I get nothing when I click on the Dell help and support button on my start up menu.  It loads nothing, no menus, etc...   I also cannot search for files or folders, this brings up the window and the dog, but it is a blank blue box, with no menus I can click anywhere and all it does is make the dog scratch.  

This is my first experience with the XP and it is pretty frustrating right now.  Any suggestions?  Thanks!Did you download the latest updates for Internet Explorer?

Does that comment mean that you cant get these pages to open or they are slow opening.

open IE and click on tools/Internet Options/Advanced tab .........then scroll down until you see Java ( sun) and make sure there is a tick in the box ...then click apply and ok.

Did you purchase this Dell new ?
If it wasnt new it's possible the O/S installed is not legit .


It almost sounds like you may have to reinstall windows XP again ......... unless you have been on line without any virus protection.

Do you have the original install/Restore disks that Dell would have shipped with the pc ?

Which Anti-Virus program are you using, and are you ALSO using the customary anti-Trojan freeware such as AdAware SE, SpyBot SD & SpywareBlaster?

I had installed the AdAware SE as I can get it through the University for free, but thought it might be part of the problem so I uninstalled it, but I can reinstall it if that's not a problem.

It was having those problems before I ever got online and I did make sure all my virus software was up and running before I did log online.

Ok ....... first of all you can D/L Ad-Aware SE free online .
then ....I am assumming this issue is only occurring when you are online at the university ...is that correct .

If thats the case there may be nothing wrong with your pc ...it could well be the network you are connecting thru.

I very much doubt Ad-Aware is causing the issue .......reinstall it .

Did I read you correctly when you said you didnt receive the o/S disks from Dell ....... if thats the case .....get on the phone to them ASAP ......... Did you receive any disks from Dell with your pc ?


There is no way you could have had those problems with java .......... unless you were on line ......... AND you claim you weren't

I get the AdAware Professional SE through the university, not sure if that's any different than what's free online.

I have read a lot the past few days about some problems with IE and Java with the new SP2 pack, so I figured that was the problem

Sorry, I meant the problems with the support and help system from dell not loading and unable to search for files and folders in XP

I'm a bit curious as to what country you got your Dell in ....... because , if you have a hard drive failure ...say after your 1 yr. warrantee has lapsed , what do you use to reinstall your operating system . You dont . Dell usually ships one of their propritory cds with all new pcs which has  install / restore files on it .

the free version of Ad-aware SE is the personal version .....the pro version is just slightly differant .

What you have read is probably related to security issues ..........however if you have the latest M/S updates .....( make sure your auto updates is enabled )
You shouldn't have problems with IE ........and SP2 provided it's properly up dated works flawlessly.

If you want to search for files in XP ........simply click on start / search  ......and when the search window opens enter your search info in the appropriate box then press
search ........ you dont need Dell for that .

I would be phoning Dell and have them.... either tell you how to correct these issues or DEMAND a replacement pc or a full refund .

Hi,

I try to install Win2000 on a fresh formatted hdd. Everything went fine until in the form-filling part of the installation when the graphic system is already up and running it says it misses a file and I get the dialog to show the installation the right path to the file. I cancelled this but the next file is also MISSING and so on. The CD cannot be damaged, I always handle it with care and I successfully installed Windows 2000 not for the first time from it.

So I have not the faintest idea why it does not work this time. Does anybody have a helpful hint?

ive been having the same problem. i have a winfast K7S 741MG that had XP. it STARTED to screw up so i decided to do a clean install and it keeps saying corrupt files or missing files . it does the same with win 2000. i managed to get WINME  installed, but it continuesly has runtime and dll errors. if you learn anything please let me KNOW. frustratin aint it?You need to install the correct drivers. It is not missing files, it merely asks for them in order to properly communicate with the hardware.Why it asks me for the correct drivers, it was at a point at which the installation should be pretty over the essential hardware configuration and furthermore I really don't understand it, because it worked fine more than one time before.
The installation shoulde be able to load the necessary drivers from the cd alone.  Not all hardware is automatically installed because the drivers are not on the Windows 2000 CD.

You need to download drivers from the manufacturers webpage in order to resolve the situation.Ok, I understand that. But the one and only thing which I have changed is the mainboard.  And I would say if the installation had a problem with it, it would have cancelled at  the first phase of it and not during the final steps. I mean the mainboard is quite an essential part. It never had a problem with the other hardware, which is not new and had had this Windows before.
I have a driver cd from the mainboard, but it is not bootable and has just drivers for onboard sound, gfx & LAN.

Can it be that it was just a bit dirt, shaken LOOSE in the cdrom drive during the mainboard change?
I personally think that the data fades with aging. They may even be made that way.

When I have problems like you are describing I first of all make a copy of the CD in question to a good quality CDR.

You need to use a virus-free computer and allow the copy to go to the hard drive first of all then to the copy CD using data verification.

Next step is to slipstream the older CDs with the current service pack and burn an XP SP2 CD or a Widows 2000 SP4 CD.

You can also get more chance of an error free install by gently washing the CD.

There should be no scratches, especially on the label side, and if the CD ever gets cracked you'll need a new one as oxydisation sets in and data simply disappers completely.

"Make sure that the CD(s) you are using is/are scrupulously clean. You can wash them in luke-warm water with two drops of mild soap solution mixed in and a soft sponge, then gently dry with a clean linen cloth. Doing this simple task very often solves the problem of read errors from the CD and ensures a smooth install."

Because of problems like this I always make a copy of all new CDs and lock the originals away in a dark damp-free environment and always in a jewel case and not a paper sleeve.is regards Windows 2000, not XP.

First time I play it with the mod running, it did just fine. The second time, sound in the game didn't work from the git-go. So I uninstall, reinstall. Didn't work. I completely removed the game and the mod, and tried playing several other games (Dungeon Siege II, GuildWars, Medieval: Total War), all have no sound.

Now, I can play music .mp3s, but not all of them... I can't play music that is associated to a game. Stuff I've downloaded I can.

if i want to install only ms word from ms office , how to do that?

I have ms office cd and also tried to select only ms word from there through "custom installation" , but all the tools of ms office (eg excel, power point etc) along with word, get loaded.Simply selecting Microsoft Word should work. Untag the others. This has ALWAYS worked for me.Hi Raptor

Are you sure it's not just installing the entry for the other programs and not the complete programs.
After installation have you tried to open the programs you deselected?

All done  You need to click on the grey disk icons and select the disk with the red cross or the yellow key, not sure. The meaning should be written next to them.

What you are doing now is installing all the programs, but with minimal features if you untag everything that is underneath the main programs.It's the red crosses Raptor, I gave it a try.

I am using Windows 2000 and have plugged in an external harddrive into my USB port.  Although the bar at the bottom of the screen reads it and allows me to "unplug or eject hardware" I cannot SEEM to find the location of the device on the computer, to save files to it (even from Microsoft Word).  Where can I look to try and find the device?Does this happen to be an FHD2-Pro?

a WAY to hack a windows 2000 computer

use TOOLS to find a windows 2000 pc and its administrator password, and run diskmgmt.msc CONNECT to that computer. find 2 ntfs drives (EX. c: d:) and mount c: to d:\c, mount d: to c:\d, then there are unlimited folders in c: (d:)  use windows search to search *.* in \\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx\c$ and that computer will hang.

We spent ALMOST 6 hours on the phone with a MS tech yet were not able to resolve the issue.  We tried to re-install the W2000 OS, but it would not work.  Kept getting a 'cant find file' error code (NT5.cat). I cannot get logged on with either admin or any user acct.  it tries to load personal settings then immediatly goes to saving settings and back to ctr-alt-del.  it does this in safe mode also.sounds like you need to do a system restore. Now on my PC if you tap F11 during the booting of the pc you can get into System Restore.

If you do this resore the PC back to a few weeks ago when evrything was ok. Then when you get into Windows download a Antivirus and Scan, Try avast or some other ones that people have recomended in the fourm.

Problem description: an application USES 2 directories, let's say A and B.
When I choose option 1, the application will load data from A.
If I choose the option 2, the application has to rename A to C and B to A. It loads data from A. Now, I have the directories A and C.
If I choose again the first option it has to rename A to B and C to A. It should load data from A. Now, there are directories A and B.

The problem is that the application does not work WELL. For example, if I choose option 2, close application, start application and  choose option 1, it will not rename those directories, and it will not find the ritght data. The application starts with a menu from where I choose the option, so, to change the option I have to restart the application.
If I restart the computer I can safely choose the other option, it works fine. But it is time consuming...
I can't rename those directories if I don't restart the computer ("file is locked"; in fact, A is locked -- I made a .bat file to rename the directories, but when A is locked the .bat file moves the other DIRECTORY in A and that is not good) .
I tried to see modifications in registry, but I am probably too clumsy... I have seen NOTHING...
I used process explorer to see what files uses that application... It didn't helped. I strongly believe that the answer is in Windows registry, but I don't know how to solve it yet.

DocWindows XP, Windows 2000, the same problem. These directories are not shared, they are used by a local aplication (local to every computer; the directories exist on every computer).
I can't tell you the application name. Firm policy... I can't tell you what she has to do...  The same policy. Let's say it does many things... ("My name is Bond... James Bond" ) But basically, the application works as I said in my first POST here.
How can I find the list of locked files in Windows? Maybe the menu launches a process that does not shut down gracefully and locks the directory. I have not found an application that will list the applications and their file usage in a period of time, I found only applications that offer an image, at a given momentum (when I double click).

I have windows 2000 server edition and I need to put in a bigger hard drive.  It has an AMD Athlon XP 2000 in it and I was wondering if a 200 GIG hard drive would be too big.  Would a machine that old support such a big hard drive?How old is old! we need a bit more info.the computer was built in 2000Maybe to old for the bios......best thing to do is PAY the motherboard MAKERS a visit!If your BIOS will support 48-bit LBA (Logical Block Addressing) it should be alright.

You should have the latest Service Pack installed.(Minimum Service Pack Three)

If all fails then you can simply attach the large hard drive to an add-in Ultra ATA PCI adapter card with a 48-Bit LBA compliant BIOS and controller driver. The adapter card bypasses the system BIOS and operating system's controller driver and uses its own BIOS and controller driver.

I currenly have the problem on a server running windows 2000 server where in the event viewer only the system log is visible. If you then switch to any of the other logs you get BLANK space with only the amount of events displayed at the top.  In other words there are no log files visibile within my event viewer? View all records is set on view tab.  Event viwer services are set to automatic and up and running fine.  Any idea what happened?  I need to check appliction logs frequently as PART of Exchange administration.  Exchange 2000 is running on these servers.  I am running windows 2000 SP4 on these servers.

M_2 is on to something.  Your server may be exceeding the default maximum size of 512 KB for the log.

I have windows 2000 and upon starting the computer recently I received  this:

MSTask.exe unable to locate dll

SHLWAPI.dll could not be found C:\windows\system32

I cant boot up the computer, have tried Safe mode, last known good configuration etc.

I thought about starting up in DOS and copying the file from another computer but dont know how.

Could somebody please help?

It gets to the screen with windows 2000 on it. Small blue bar at bottom showing LOADING progress stops momentarily and looks as though it glitches and then carries on, the following screen begins, after a few moments the error message appears and thats it, cant go on.

Have tried EVERY possible option in advanced menu.

When using safe mode it is just a black screen with "safe mode" written in each corner, mouse pointer available but nothing else. Is this normal?

I have a program CREATED in foxpro for dos 2.6. It runs smoothly in WIN98 but it has an error in win2000.

I hit cancel and it will pop up at least 25 times, but i keep hitting cancel then some of the programs will open. You may wish to use System Restore if you are using Windows XP, ME or 2000.boot pc to safe MODE hold down the f5 key on bootup.......now delete the files use the search option.......or type MSCONFIG in the run box......and disable the program concerned.....click the start up folder.....Dr. D:

If you need help setting up a diagnostic startup to keep the installer from loading when Windows starts, just let us know.  We will explain how to use MSCONFIG.  The utility is only available in Windows 98, ME and XP, however.  What operating system are you using?

i decided to install xp pro on my comp and it was a big mistake this thing hangs and freezes won't download updates and stops in the middle and nothing

I do a lot of copy pasting in word2000

and I have two question regarding this.

1) the hotkey for pasting is ctrl+V ( which means PRESSING two KEY simultaneously)

can it be changed to a single key?

If not , can it be changed to a set of nearer keys , like "ctrl + A" ?

2) clipboard in word ( view-->toolbars--> clipboard) allowes upto 12 copied file for storing.

Can this number be extended?

I recently installed a new HARD drive to my computer a GATEWAY running Windows 2000.  Before the new harddrive when I clicked the shutdown button my computer WOULD shutdown completely.  Now when I click the shutdown button, it shuts down but I then have to press the button on my tower to finish the shutdown.  Is there a way that I can get it back to shutting down without this extra step.

Can't play DVDs.  DVD Player is not listed under Programs, Entertainment.  If I open it via Help, it opens but does NOTHING.  Help indicates there is no DVD decoder, tho they are provided by Windows and the DVD drive manufacturer.  It's a Pioneer  DVD-R 104 which I use all the time to record DVDs I create with Adobe Premiere and Studio 9.  So wha happened to my decoder?  Where can I get one and how do I install it?  Thanks!

Windows XP (or 2000) USES blue text to show you that a file is compressed (or made smaller to be archived).  Files that are colored green are encrypted (a security feature that keeps others using your computer from reading the files).

How to electronically reconcile VARIANCES between a public and personal contact FOLDERS as opposed to MANUALLY?

I have made a html flyer which actually has no html text in it it is simply a gif image. Anyhow, I have saved it as html sent an email to another PERSON and it worked fine - the flyer appeared straight away without any opening of attachments (which was the desired effect).

But when you go to print the email it comes up with all the email subject, ADDRESS etc at the top, but the image is lost. It  prints out ONE of them dreaded boxes with the red cross in it!!

I am sending this from pc to pc in Outlook 2000 and it will not print. When I send it to a MAC in Entaurage - it prints out fine!!??

I THOUGHT uploading the html & image to the WEBSITE, but i dont undertand how this would affect the printing of the email...

Anybody got any idea....?? I am going crazy!

Anyone (me) who is at all security minded is reading & writing email in plain text and not allowing their computer to open attachments.
Call me paranoid.  I do not open or write in HTML format.

I have this bug on my Windows 2000 proffesional partition...and it's like this...
First on the window tab apeard "System Shutdown"
Then further on the message it's like: "The sistem is SHUTTING down. Please save all work in progres and logoff. Any unsaved changes will be lost. This shutdown was initiated by NT AUTHORITY/SYSTEM"
Then is a countdown starting from 1:00 min  
And finaly still on this window is:
"Message: - The system process 'C:\WINNT\sistem32\lsass.exe' terminated unexpectedly with status code 128. The system will now shut down and restart"

I mention that if I disable the network connection this message stops to apears but if I enable the network connection after aprox. 30 min this message apears and exactly how he promise is shutting down my computer and restarts it.  

Please help me anyone!  


Hi friend yes this is cause bcz you are using network connection with any firewall. To turn your windows own firewall, right click on the any network connection and click properties. Now select the last tab which is "Advanced". Here you can turn firewall ON. One thing you must remember that windows gives you option to turn firewall ON while you are making a new network connection. So you must carefully read each and every dialog box to make sure that you check the option "Turn on Internet Firewall for this connection" (or some thing similar) while you are making your new network connection if you are new to this version of windows or new to computer.

i have windows 2000 for my hp computer and when its in the loading screen it stops and says files are corupted or missing so i reformat my computer so i can just start FRESH (with windows 98)  and when the computer finishes and  I restart it, it says it is still windows 2000 with the corupted or missing files.  does anyone know why my computer isnt remembering that i formatted or what ever is wrong?win 98 *Formatting a disk DELETES ALL the data on it.

How did you reformat the hard drive partition?  Did you boot to the Windows 98 CD or did you use a floppy boot disk?  Also, is there more than one partion on your hard drive?

I am new to this board so i apreciate your help and patience. My Celeron 300 Win98, Office 2000 machine is sick. Upon STARTUP I receive the following messages at the desktop stage:

I do not have the Win98 cd that was installed on the machine. Even in safe mode I cannot view any files.

This is a frustrating one, this happens alot when I want to run some programs or an installer (e.g. The Sims, Theme Hospital, countless other games and software, almost everything I try) I GET this error

dl65  OK, I checked the real key & Belarc Advisor displays it.  The is no need for the pd key......if you used this route...C:\WINDOWsOPTIONS\CABS........scroll down the list till you come across the regsv32 icon next to it is .....the setup icon.....if this was clicked...it will DISPLAY the pd key.......as well of re-installing win98.

I just tried to download a free 3D screensaver and tried to PREVIEW it but an error box popped up saying "No hardware-accelerated direct3d DEVICES ewre found". I then downloaded  Microsoft,s DirectX but to no avail. I checked Add/Remove and nothing was there. I have also tried by shutting down my spyware programs but still nothing. I run Windows 2000 Pro; what am I MISSING or doing wrong?type dxdiag in the run box  and TEST for 3d.........Your videocard may not support Hardware ACCELERATION or DirectX.

I have 1GB RAM on my system but sometimes when I try to view things such as video I get a "cannot run program due to low resources" message. Even when I shut down all programs running in the foreground I still get the message. I've allocated more virtual memory w/no luck. Through task manager what applications and/or process's can I safely shut down to free up memory? Please help.
BGWOW, you have 1gb of RAM and you're still low on resources?  Are you sure Windows is recognizing all your RAM?  It's hard to tell you what processes you can safely shut down.  From the sounds of it, it seems you have a huge amount of programs running in the background, most of them probably unecessary.  Can you do a printscreen of your task manager processes tab, and also a printscreen of your startup tab if you run 'msconfig' from the RUN menu?  If you need additional assistance, you can reach me at ResourcePC.

DaveThat's outrageous! What programs are running in your background? Also, if you don't have a lot of processes running, then scan for viruses and spyware...

[glb]Flame[/glb]I don't have a virus as far as my anti-virus program is concerned. I believe it is programs running in the background but don't know how to find that out or eliminate the problem.
BGYou can find out what's running by opening the Task Manager... Press CTRL + ALT + Delete  to bring it up...

I had the same problem.  1GB RAM and I kept getting not enough memory errors, even after stopping alot of the running processes.  I had run  a virus check and it came back that I had none also.  Long story short, it was viruses, (about 5).  It took Microsoft Beta  to find them all.  I ran several others before and none of them FOUND them.  Just a suggestion.Microsoft Antispyware beta locates spyware. Not viruses.Pity Microsoft didn't go with Spyware Doctor which has a a MUCH better layout.My utmost apologies.  It was Kaspersky not Microsoft Beta.  However, my point was to try other programs,  not take the findings of just one.  Try the following programs as well if you have not yet done so:

Hi,

Every now and then, I get the following error:

"FireFox has generated errors and window will close it"
I also get this error with explorer.exe.

I am not really too worried because so far, re-starting the program or re-booting the PC solves the problem without ulterior consequences, but that does not stop this from being an annoyance.

Check the Windows 2000 Event Viewer for any indication as to what is causing the errors (right-click My Computer and select Manage from the context menu, then double click Event Viewer and double click Applications and System.  To view the error info, double click on any Error events listed in the right pane.)  

If you need help figuring any of these out, let us know what the Source and Event ID is for each error.

I ran into a big problem. Last time my c drive have 66.7GB of memory, after some partitioning, it became 1GB. how do i change it back to 66.7GB?
You may need to activate the remaining storage capacity.how do i activate it?You can only activate the remaining storage space if you have partitioned it. Have you done so?

If yes, then here is how to activate the remaining space (Windows XP):

1. Right click on My Computer
2. Manage
3. Unfold storage
4. DISK Manager
5. Right click on the unactivated, but partitioned space and select format

You can also activate the remaining space through Fdisk or Windows XP Setup.i'm still running win 98 not xp... big disaster... it was... gonna stick to win 98....

10240 Mb = 10 Gb

The space on a drive is referred to as drive-space.

Memory is either RAM (Random Access Memory) or swap-file (Virtual Memory) (Paging file with Windows NT/2000/XP)yea... when i went to "fdisk" command, it asked if i want to enable large disk support for FAT, i said no. the after that it asked if i want to ALLOW large disk space for ntfs, i said yes.
so i went to set active partition, this is what it showed me:

just to make sure, it is read like this: Partition 1 has a ExtDOS, 4761 MBytes, and its usage is 44%..

total disk space is 10781Mbytes

when i try to set partition 1 to active, it said partition selected not startable.

so i'm not sure what to do now...

You should say yes to Large disk support for FAT as Windows 98 can not read NTFS.

You may need to delete and recreate partitions until you are able to assign the the total amount of disk space you have in your possession.Windows '98 should only be set up on FAT32 so you need to answer Yes to "Do you want to Enable Large Drive Support for FAT32."

You should go back to fdisk, Enable Large Drive Support for FAT32, and delete ALL the partitions on the drive. Then make a new C: drive (Primary DOS drive) of say 2050 Mb and then an Extended DOS drive using ALL of the remaining space.

You can make three Logical drives IN the extended DOS partition.

But you say that the total drive space is 10781 Mb which is only 10.528 Gb...

Which bootdisk are you using to partition the drive with?

I would just use a standard Windows '98 bootdisk.


i was told  i can allocate how many MegaBytes into each partition... how do i do that?By FOLLOWING  the instructions provided by the program. It should prompt you at a certain point wheter you wish to divide Hard Disk Drive space in megabytes or percentages of the total amount of disk space available.you mean after i delete the partition?
because i'm very tired of doing the formatting... i have been doing it for like 3 or 4 times for the last few days.

Does your BIOS detect your Hard Disk Drive as 67.7GB?
