Answer» I need help please! Reload Windows 2000 and format the drive as part of the process. Or just delete the partition and create a new one. LOL, okay...I know silly question to come. But how do I do a Clean install?Quote
Mac, I don't have XP professional...I have 2000 professional. I hate XP no matter what version I have! I guess 95 and 98 had me used to a certain format and 2000 is closest to it.Molly, you have chosen a wise path to follow with w2k Set you cdrom as the first boot device in bios and then boot to the w2k disk. Set your partition/s according to your needs, format and enjoy w2k will let you do it all.Quote There is nothing wrong with XP as long as you backup you registry, download the patches, have SP2, and a firewall up running the Opera Browser. ^_^ IT, I am computer illiterate. Say what??Quote Molly, you have chosen a wise path to follow with w2k Fed. Bless you! Can you walk me through how to do that? Not an expert, just a w2k fan, it has all the xp GOOD parts and none of the bad parts. Molly, your only decisions will be if you partition or not, and what file system to choose. (ntfs)You can make WinXP look just like Win2k and Win98. Start--Settings--Taskbar and Start Menu--Start Menu TAB--Select "Classic Start Menu", select "Customize"--Check all except last 3 (unless you like small icons, next to last).Quote Not an expert, just a w2k fan, it has all the xp good parts and none of the bad parts. Fed, what are the better points of using w2k compare to XP? I used to run on w2k but somehow some softwares I need is not working fine enough with w2k :-/From your description, it seems that when you installed Windows 2000, it was just added to your system instead of replacing Windows XP. If that was the CASE, then, when you boot the computer, you will get a list of operating systems to choose from. It might be that Windows XP will be the default on that list, if so then Windows XP will still start up by itself even if you have installed Windows 2000. Do the following. 1) At the boot menu, select Windows 2000. 2) Open "System Properties", choose "Advanced" and "Startup and recovery". Set "Default operating system" to "Windows 2000". 3) Edit the file C:\boot.ini and remove all references to Windows XP. (Be careful here, if you remove too much you might not be able to boot up at all.) 4) Delete the directory containing Windows XP. 5) Reboot, and Windows XP will be gone. If you had some documents and data stored in the My Documents folder under Windows XP, you will not find these again in the My Documents folder in Windows 2000. These will reside in the folder belonging to the user account that was being used under Windows XP (i.e. in the Documents and Settings folder). You can copy them from here to your new Windows 2000 account. Thanks Knut Arne Vedaa! Sounds easy enough. I'll give it a TRY. |

Thanks Virgin: That depends on whether your computer is connected to a peer-to-peer network with a workgroup or client-SERVER domain. If you CONNECT via a domain, the network administrator has to grant that permission to your account on the domain server. CALL her and ask. Best regards, Doc |

Answer» Most of the processes are System Download & run PROCEXP from I didnt see that on there the thing is, I have had symantec antivirus for months but this problem only started happening 2 days ago...Look harder. August 16 Process Explorer v9.25 Process Explorer v9.2 shows a real-time CPU graph in its tray ICON, adds CPU graph and I/O delta columns to the process view, reports 32-bit LOADED DLLs for 32-bit processes on Windows 64-bit systems, and lets you view and edit process security descriptors. It also supports Windows Vista. ccapp may or may not be norton.I downloaded it and its running so now what??Look at the CPU usage, what is using your cpu?I started the program and the cpu usage went down to 15% and everything is fine, I did kill the AOL thing that was running since I dont have AOL, I just dont know if thats what did it or not...it was called AOLsoftware...I restarted my computer and the problem happened again and YES its the aolsoftware.exe it uses 100 cpu and when I kill it everything is fine. How do I get rid of it permantly?Check the menu entry to see if there is an uninstaller. Check Add/Remove Programs to see if there is a remove option. Check msconfig to see if you can STOP it from starting. Download & run HIJACKTHIS to stop it from starting. Search your computer for the .exe file & then delete it from safe mode or with KillBox. Run a registry cleaner to tidy up.AOL = AO *censored*. Try using something else. |

|
Answer» Hi, Q 1)Does anyone know if it is possible to triple boot windows OS's , if so how? Load them on separate partitions, with the oldest one first. Windows 95,98,ME must go on the first partition of the first logical drive. Quote Q2) Is it possible for 2 OS's to co-exist on 1 logical partition, please explain No reason to try, and lots of ways to get problems. If you format them all as FAT32 and instal Windows #2 and #3 as logical DRIVES on an extended partition, each will be able to see the data of the others. Or ideally creat a 4th partition (FAT32) that they can all ACCESS, just for data.Akmed: I have one system that has MS-DOS 6.22, Windows for Workgroups 3.11, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 98 SE, Windows 2000 Professional and Windows XP Professional. I am able to boot to any of the above operating systems on the computer without any third party boot manager. What operating systems do you want to install? Doc |

Answer» is there anyone know how can i find free books for computers on internet.not in electronic formsYou mean you physically get a copy of a book for free? That SOUNDS like the library! Btw, I used to read a book in a bookstore regarding customization of WinXP, where it shows details to get rid of unnecessary components, especially registry entries, which will make the system run much more smoother. Is there any resources like such on the internet?Any XP system will run smoothly if it has the right hardware and is properly maintained. There is practically no need to tune it if you start out with enough RAM, a PIII processor, or equivalent, and a good hard-drive FULL formatted to HPFS/NTFS. My drives are formatted to FAT...any difference? Quote The only registry entry which needs to be removed is ... Compress Old Files. What does this entry do? And how to remove it? Quote Good maintenance, and a proper backup (drive image(s))are more important than fiddling about in the registry. Emm...actually I have no idea of what a drive image is... Are you referring to something like this? http://www.litepc.com/Quote 1. FAT is FAT and NTFS is NTFS Neat answers, Mac, I appreciate it very much And I hope you are a human and not a computer Quote 1. FAT is FAT and NTFS is NTFSSo what's the differences between FAT and NTFS other than the name? And is it recommended to run XP on NTFS? IF so, why? Quote 2. It Compresses Old Files. Remove it from the Registry. What are the old files that it compresses? What is the purposes for it to do so and why it shouldn't? Quote 3. A Drive Image is an image of a drive. Is it same with a backup? What's the differences? No one mind to answer? Most of your queries will be answered on websites. Please Google with the question & see what comes back. e.g Google SEARCH for "compress old files" (without the quotes) & it's all there. Good luck Quote Neat answers, Mac, I appreciate it very much. FAT32 is more for pre 2000/XP users, whereas the better performance of HPFS, standing for High Performance File System, and NTFS standing for New Technology file system, is quite an advance not least in the security and file size capability which it offers. 'Old files' are files that have not been accessed in a while. Compressing them takes up processor time and decompressing them when required does too, and the time taken to do so slows the system down. Compress data files if you have to, I do, but don't compress any files on your System drive. (TAKE a look in Disk Management to see the System drive, usually drive C: ) Backups usually stay on the drive whereas the wise drive imager will image to data CDR(s) or data DVD(s) in case the drive fails and they have to re-install from scratch.I've seen them!!!!Take a look at NTFS vs FAT Now if you really want to do a lot of reading there is PC GUIDEFrameable! Thanks for all the info.Quote Thanks for all the info. Solve : Unusually slow? |

Answer» The way to see is press Ctl-Alt-Del and see the running processes. You can also look at the icons in the lower Right hand corner to see what is going. The best way is to open command prompt and type msconfig and press enter. On the right tab you can see what's in Windows start up. These programs run all the time. Some you must leave alone and some you could check to disable at startup. Would the change be all that dramatic though? Beacuse I doubt my FATHER would go spend money on more RAM slots when I have had the computer for over 5 years now. Manufacturer's cost cutting price war is the answer. 128 MB is fine for Windows '98 as an entry level quantity. 256 MB is better. 256 MB is fine for Windows ME as an entry level quantity, 512 MB is better. XP can run on 256 MB but it does work a lot better with 512 MB. So why so low when purchased? Because the manufacturer only allows enough RAM to run the basic Windows OPERATING system with some very light software. As you add more programs and more files memory use increases because there are more file addresses. "Windows slows as it grows" is what is said. Better to simply say, Add more RAM to begin with, and add more still, if the operating system and the motherboard will accept it, and the programs you are using need it. The manufacturers are at fault really. '98, ME, 2000 & XP will all work well with 512 MB so there was never any point in making 64, 128 and 256 MB modules as if they had only ever made 512 MB modules and 1024 MB modules the price would have leveled out, as the tooling required for manufacturing could have been standardised and all the costs of advertising, stocking, handling, and transport, would have been lower. Most people specify the addition of more RAM at the time of purchase, if this option is available, and they know something about computers. They also take care not to have the system RAM shared by the video system and have a video card with its own RAM. Does that help with the understanding? What is the make and model of your computer? I hope you get a laptop with 1024 MB of system RAM.That helped me understand a lot actually, thanks for taking the time to explain. The make and model is: Dell Pentium (R) 4 1400 MHz 1.40 GHz 128 MB RAM And yes, I hope I get a computer with that much RAM, at LEAST 512.Good. Understanding is everything. DELL models are usually Dimension, Latitude, Inspirion, Omniplex, etc. I don't recognise yours. I would stick with 1024 MB, then you can't go wrong.Dimension 8100 Forgot to mention it, my bad DELL 8100 RAMWow, thanks so much. Life saver.... Edit: They sure are expensive.. wow |

Answer» I just built a brand new PC from all new components here are the specs:
Stop 0x50 usually occurs after the installation of faulty hardware http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/Windows/2000/server/reskit/en-us/Default.asp?url=/resources/documentation/Windows/2000/server/reskit/en-us/prork/prhd_exe_duol.asp Quote and then it says something about setupdd.sys PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA F84AC19F F84A2000 3b7d8507 http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=817197 Connor: It may also be caused by faulty memory: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=171003&sd=RMVP Remove and reseat all of the RAM sticks, then reinstall. If that doesn't work, remove all but one RAM stick and reinstall. If you get the error, replace that RAM stick with a known good one. Hope it works out for you, DocBTW: If you are reinstalling Windows XP, make sure you either reformat the hard drive first, or uninstall the antivirus program first: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/183169/EN-US/ how do i run a memtest? I only have 1 stick of RAM. should I try deleting the partition on my hard drive? will that effect BIOS or cause problems later?Connor, In the PAST, i've been able to fix problems with RAM by removing it (with the power off, of course) and reseating it in the socket. Sometimes, heating and cooling with cause the RAM to slowly move out of the socket, so reseating helps. Make sure you touch a metal part of the computer case to ground yourself and reduce ESD, which may damage the RAM, before you remove it. If you must put the RAM down, do not place it on a metal or plastic surface; place it on a sheet of paper to protect it from ESD. If reseating does not work, try purchasing a new 512 MB RAM stick of the same kind (e.g., PC 100, PC 133, or whatever your motherboard requires). If REPLACING the RAM does not fix the problem, it is some other hardware that is at fault, as GX1 suggested. (For example, a power supply that is failing to provide enough wattage to satisfy the system may produce a 0x50 error.) Best REGARDS, DocDownload memtest, create the floppy, READ the memtest readme text, run the test for a few hours. |

Answer» I have a Dell CPx laptop that "had" Windows 2k Pro on it when I got it. I WANTED to change it over to Windows 98, which I have a full version disc, along with the SE update cd. The harddrive was partitioned into 5gb and 15gb partitions, in NTFS format. If there is an NTFS partition you need to use DELPART to delete it, as you are unable to using fdisk. That is certainly true with a Windows 98 boot disk, Mac. However, Microsoft enabled the Windows ME boot disk to delete NTFS partitions so those who had Windows 2000 previously installed could install Windows ME instead. Idiot: Delete all logical drives, then delete all the partitions, then create one partition, then reboot and use the FORMAT command to format the one partition. If you enable large disk support, it will format the partition with FAT32 instead of FAT16. Let Mac or i know if you need more assistance. It WORKS very well ...... Hope this helps dl65 I need to be able to work a server from a different location, like I was sitting at the server. I figured out that I need a newer version of pcanywhere but I STILL have a question. Will both pc's need to have pcanywhere on them? Or can the server have it installed and can I just use xp to connect to it?If nothing else works, try using RealVNC. Run it as a server on the PC you're connecting to. Run the client program on the PC you're connecting from. Get it >here<. |

Answer» I couldn't find this in the search. I WOULD like to password protect a folder on my home network. The scenario I would like to create is where I create share subdirectories on computer A. So when computer B browses to the share \\compA\All Users\compB on computer A, computer B has to provide a password to access the files. I know there are programs one can buy to do this, but they must be manipulating permissions already in WinXPpro. Is there a good step by step guide to doing this? I want the child subdirectories to have the same properties, but once you access the PARENT, you won't be asked for a password. Thanks for listening. |

Uhh. The letters on the drive doesnt mater unless one has windows on it Did you recently partion the drive or reformated the drive? Are they set as master or slaves?"There are two ways that disk drives get drive letters on a PC. The first kind are the ones controlled by your BIOS. These usually include your floppy and most hard drives, for which drive letters are created when your system is first TURNED on. The second kind of drives are controlled by software, or more specifically, drivers. These types of drives include CD-ROMs, Syquests and other removables, network drives, and sometimes SCSI hard disks with ID's other than zero (0) or one (1). Generally, drive letters are assigned to these drives depending on the order in which they are loaded. |

Answer» Hi. I have a small home network. Three computers have winxp home edition. and one has win 2000. The issue that you are having with the CPU reaching 100% is due to the PROGRAM winxpdisablezeroconfig.exe not being able to terminate the windows wireless support FUNCTIONALITY. Did you try the suggestion from Belkin?I have left a 2 e-mails with Belkin but have not received anything back yet. I have also done the following: Click start, run In the run box type msconfig and then click o.k. Click on the startup tab. Uncheck winxpdisablezeroconfig.exe and then restarted. But does this mean I am running in diagnostic mode. and would the computer be ok starting in this mode always.?It only means that winxpdisablezeroconfig.exe will not be started at bootup. You could remove the entry from the registry but I suggest you don't because you can kill your operating system if you don't know what you're doing. Just leave it disabled in msconfig and wait for Belkin to issue a patch. (If ever) LOL.Thank you for the reply? I have heard from Belkin and they have sent a possible fix. Thank you for contacting Belkin Technical Support. We Understand that you are facing issues with wireless connection. please follow the steps mentioned below to fix this issue. 1) Open an Internet explorer window (from a computer connected to the router) 2) On the address bar type in 192.168.2.1 and hit Enter. 3) Leave the password blank and click submit 4) Click on "Channel and SSID" under "Wireless". 5) Try changing the channel to 6. 6) Apply the changes. 7) If this channel dosnt work tune the channel to 1. For CPU usage please follow the steps mentioned below. 1. Right click on My computer Icon. 2. Click on properties. 3. Click on device manager tab. 4. Click on + sign next to network adapter. 5. Right click on Belkin adapter. 6. Click on remove. 7. Close all the windows. 8. Double click on My computer Icon. 9. Double click on C Drive. 10. Click on Program files. 11. Right click on Belkin folder. 12. Click on Delete. You will get "Found New hardware" wizard once the computer restarted. we suggest you to continue with the installation. The install wizard will prompt a message saying "Use Windows to configure my wireless network". Put a TICK mark in the box and continue with the installation. I hope this will help others. I hope Belkin helped you. Did it work? |

However, sporadically it stops being able to connect to a particular account. Is there a way to sort this out?Aside from the fact that it could be an ISP problem. |
