Solve : How to run Format Part 2?

Answer»

Hi, Thank you very much for your help with this topic.

1) When I use the 6 xp start up diskettes, enter into the i386 folder by choosing recovery console

and type format e: FS/ntfs

it says "cannot find autofmt.exe" and I am unable to run it.

When I copy autofmt.exe to the first of the 6 xp start up diskettes - it then says it cannot find this file.

2) When I start up using the "xp boot diskette" from instructions from microsoft:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;305595

and add format.com which I got from searching xp,

It states "bad command or file name" or "incorrect ms dos version"

I need specifc instructions please if you could be so KIND to format a c: partition to be able to restore a image of the c: system paritition and have it boot successfully.

Thank you very much for your help

is this winxp an upgrade disk?>http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/format_XP.htmGo into the i386 folder and run winnt.exe

At the welcome screen hit Enter, then press F8 to ACCEPT the agreement.

Press F3 twice to exit setup.

To format the partition, use the arrow keys to select the partition where you want to install Windows XP.

* Select the NTFS formatting option and press ENTER
* Choose Full Format

When the C: drive partition has been formatted re-boot to your restore system and restore the image on your E: (?) drive to the C: drive.

What is the Make and model of your computer?HP Pavilion A320NDo you have this copy of the user's manual, and did you make the recovery CD SET? It might be easier to use those.

Should read

format e: /FS:NTFS

Take a look at this MS KB Article http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=307881
Not to confuse anyone the format switch is important.

You can custom format FAT32 volumes too (if the program will let you) for example:

A:\>format x: /Z:n

Where x is the drive LETTER /Z is the custom switch and where n = 1 , 2 , 4 , 8 , 16 , 32 or 64 , and where 1 = 512 bytes.

So A:\>format c: /Z:8 would give 4096 byte clusters. (8 x 512)

This is what you get when you use the NTFS format parameters

format c: /FS:NTFSHi, Thank you very much for your support.

I was able to run format from the 6 xp start up diskettes. I copied autofmt.exe to the 1st floppy and when it asked for it, I put the floppy back in and gave it the path.

I ran format c: /fs:ntfs, did a recovery from Image For Dos and rebooted successfully!

Thanks again for the great help. Praise Jesus!

Solve : Cannot open My Computer or Documents?

Answer»

I am running Windows ME and every time I try to open My computer I get a error SFG38BA.DLL. I cannot access anything on Windows Explorer. Any suggestions?run this >http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/Thanks for the help, but it did not work. I EVEN did system restore and this did not help. When I click on My Computer I keep getting the error SFG.38BA.DLL I cannot find any info anywhere on this error.

Anyone had a similar problem on Windows Me with opening Explorer or My Computer?no it may seem like a TROJAN to me....did you disable system restore before running stinger?you should do...i dont use system restore ...thats where all the bugs lurk? either right click on it and find more info on the dll file...also you could try spysweeper from webroot .comI NEVER get around to using System Recovery. My problems are serious enough to format. Not to mention when you donot have any problems, System Recovery causes one: unnecessary disk usage.... think maybe the 'unecesasry disk usage' is product of the installtion/restore using compressed files, which it expands, then FAILS to clean up the disk after the installtion/reload is completed ,,, I try to always run defragment before AND after any major install ...... I have never noticed any installation program which cleans up after itself... like a puppy not yet housebroken ....

Belarc Advisor: http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
well, thanks a lot merlin and johnwill for your responses.

The tools you have mentioned will run only in windows.

I want a tool which can run at bootup (start up) time in DOS mode. I mean a tool which can collect important information from BIOS. Not a manual procedure

Secondly, I need information from BIOS like computer name, PROCESSOR type, memory, TOTAL disk space.... I need those information in the form of a report, can be .txt or .html or any format.

If the tool (.exe or .com or .bat) can be used to get basic system information from BIOS and which can run in DOS mode, then I can use the same tool to get system details from not only windows machines but also from other OS based PCs say Linux....

Thatz my idea to maintain by Lab machines.

Friends help me in this REGARD. I hope your co-operation will be there for me.

Solve : Windows 2000 Sound Issue?

Answer»

I'm running Windows 2000 Pro, solid system, no issues other than the following:

After the computer has recovered from SLEEP MODE, the sound blasts me out of the room. I can reset it using the volume control setting in the Tool Bar, but the next time the computer recovers from sleep mode, the sound is returned to maximum volume. It does not do this upon initial boot, but just when I've activated and recovered from SLEEP MODE.

I'm running a Pentium 4 on a BioStar U8668D Motherboard utilizing the ONBOARD AC '97 sound chip. Nothing peculiar with my setup that I KNOW of. Sound works just fine except for the Sleep Mode issue. This is incredibly annoying, as everytime the computer recovers from Sleep Mode, I get blasted out of the room. Yes, I know I can turn off the Windows Sound wave, but would like to leave it on if possible.

Anyone have any IDEAS of what I can do to resolve this very annoying event? I've looked everywhere and can't find any reference to this as it applies to my PC.

Thank you. Did you check to see if your speaker set is turned to maximum?

Once you have done so, I suggest that you:

  • Download latest drivers
  • Uninstall current drivers
  • Reset
  • Install latest drivers

why use sleep mode? if something GO wrong with your pc ....your data maybe lost...my way of thinking is just shut it down...

Solve : Installing XP to a blank HD?

Answer» I would like to put XP on an older computer. I'm not sure if it's a copy or an original disk. The mobo is an (MSIK9VGM-AM2 VIA Micro ATX) in a case. How do you do this and get around the problem of the registration (30 days) ? I should mention that the hard drive will probably be about 250gb since this will be a MUSIC machine with a lot of WAV files and old programs on it on it. Any information you have would be greatly appeciated. Thanks for your time If the old case has a sticker from Microsoft with XP product KEY, you're good to go.
If not, don't even try. It is VIOLATION of copyright to use XP without proper registration.

But you can use Linux Ubuntu and it would be suitable music machine.
https://www.expertreviews.co.uk/software/operating-systems/1404547/top-5-lightweight-linux-distros-for-older-pcs
They haven't been here since FEBRUARY...Hopefully, the machine is old enough that it doesn't use a SATA hard drive. The XP installer does not have drivers for and cannot handle installation to a SATA drive, machine will actually crash during install. If you have the SATA driver on a floppy disk (no other MEDIUM) then you can insert it at the correct time and the installer will install it.

The other method would be to slipstream the SATA drivers onto the installer disk. ***sigh***Sorry, missed that... No worries strollin...

Solve : How can we check existence of a USB device?

Answer» HELLO everyone,,,
My PC has a USB port connecting to an HID machine. After restarting SEVERAL times, the HID will disappear and can't be shown in Device Manager. What I want to do is to write a program to restart the PC, check EXISTENCE of that HID and show the restarting count in CASE of HID disappearing.
My question is how I can check existence of an HID in Visual C++....What is an HID?
Human Interface Device...thank Bill Gates for the terminology...What, keyboard, mouse, trackball, touchpad, etc?
They all qualify...thats why inventing that term is dumber than a sack of hammers...Microsoft supplies a program called USBview to diagnose this type of problem might be worth a look.

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/drivers/debugger/usbview

Or another OPTION is https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usb_devices_view.html

Both programs will give information of what is causing the device not to load.

Solve : windows xp netflix?

Answer»

I have an old reliable 32 bit Gateway GT5235E with 4 GB DDR2 Ram running WinXP Pro and was wondering if there is any way to get Netflix to work. I've tries Chrome, IE , Firefox and Opera but all want to run updates that my pc can take. Is there some secert Browser I haven't heard of?

Thanks
JohnYes, but you must have a version of Silverlight that works with XP.
And the XP has to be up to date.

Then, you have to get a version of Sea Monkey that runs of XP.

Anyway, that works for me.

But why no just get a legal copy of Windows 10?
Netflix won't run on XPQuote

But why no just get a legal copy of Windows 10?

Just a heads up that Windows 10 can be installed on that computer and when asked for a key there is an option to state that you do not have a key. Windows 10 will install and you can then see if Windows 10 is a good match for your hardware which it should be given your system has 4GB DDR2. Then at a later point you can pay to register it if Windows 10 runs at a good pace on that system vs paying money now to upgrade to 10 and then find out that its not a good pairing for your processing needs and speed.

Looking up your computer specs I found this for your model which might be a match:

Quote
Athlon 64 X2 3800+ (2.00 GHz)
1 GB DDR2
200 GB HDD
Windows XP Media Center
No Screen
NVIDIA GeForce 6100

That CPU can run Windows 10 64-bit and MAKE full use of the 4GB RAM. Unless your XP is 64 bit you have only been using 3GB of 4GB.

Only area of concern for this computer is the GPU, if your using the integrated Geforce 6100 that is a very weak GPU in todays terms. My daughter was watching Netflix and Hulu for a while on a Geforce 6200 AGP 256MB and there was some lag. If you add a LOW cost video card to this system like a Radeon HD5450 1GB Video card for around $25 it will play Netflix without any problems. My daughters computer is a Athlon64 X2 4450B 2.3Ghz and it has a Radeon HD 5450 PCI Express 1GB Video Card.

If you already upgraded the GPU and not running integrated video, then you might be fine with the card you have. My wife about 6 months ago was using netflix on a Geforce 9800GT 512MB Video Card and it was fine for watching Netflix, Hulu, and Crackle.DaveLembke,
That is a great idea!
A user can use Windows 10 for a trail period before really getting a product key.
During that time he can watch some Netflix. If he does not get the product key and activate windows, it will limit more usage. I think it has a 30 DAY limit.

This is legal if the user eventually gets Windows registered. One can buy just the product key under $35 for a few vendors, but you take a chance that it might not be legit. Here's a recent post on another forum that explains this:
https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/get-windows-10-free-or-cheap,5717.html
Read it over carefully.
OK, this is my spare computer in my Woodworking Shop. My main computer is in the house with no issues. This computer dual boots with an older version of Ubuntu and I like the way it's set up for my shop. I tried to update Silverlight but it won't take. I tried Win 10 once on my main computer but I really didn't like it. I'm one of the one's that will probably go to my grave still using XP & Linux on this thing. I use to have a TV setup in here but needed the real estate for tools. I don't use the embedded GPU, I use a GeForce 8400 that works good enough for what I do. I was just trying to get it to work and all the you tube video's out there that i've seen so far have not worked. I'll keep checking this thread if anyone comes up with something I would really appreciate it. Thanks to all.

JohnThis week Netflix stopped working on my Windows XP computers. XP SP3 the most CURRENT version of Windows that still supports important legacy software that I use as an artist, so an upgrade to Windows 10 won't happen. I have several other PCs on W10 that are fine, but would still like to stream Netflix on my art boxes. I have tried Chrome, Firefox and IE. All have issues. In Chrome, Netflix tells me it is incompatible and I need to upgrade. Firefox gets DRM compatibility ERRORS, and IE8 won't even load the style sheet to format the Netflix UI. I am flexible regarding the browser and player. Any suggestions?1. Don't make your user name the same as your email address (you are inviting a blizzard of spam, if not worse!)

Solve : too many operating systems?

Answer»

I need to KNOW how to remove windows 98 and windows 2000 as I also have xp on my computer and it is running very slowly.....please helpIf you installed them all on seperate harddisks/partitions you can format each PARTITION. However, Windows XP can be uninstalled by using the Add/Remove software list. I donot know if that goes for Windows 98 or Windows 2000.

If you installed them all on the same harddisk or partition, formatting is most likely your only option. What is your system SPECIFICATION like, as a LOW hardware specification coming from '98 via 2000 to XP would probably explain the slow running.

Processor
RAM
Bus speed
Hard drive speed
Power supply wattage

Make and model of computer please.

Solve : fail on int 24?

Answer»

when i removed windows and try to install new windows xp i get this error (invalid system disk) and try to install it in dos prompt error (fail on int 24) appearSounds like an ancient machine to me...On computers old or new, MS-DOS INT 24 error MEANS a CRITICAL error has occurred, probably failure to write to disk. It is usually followed by the prompt (ABORT, RETRY, IGNORE). Possible causes: Hardware failure (hard disk drive or controller), hard disk cable faulty or loose, hard disk incorrectly partitioned. Other possibilty: ancient (reported 1992) MS-DOS virus ("Green JOKER") has infested every .com file in MS-DOS boot media. This is less likely given that the Windows installer also fails.

I know I'm many years late to the party here, but I had this INT 24 problem with my 5 1/4 drive.

I tried different floppy cables, different 5 1/4 drives, disabling drivers. It drove me crazy for hours. The one thing I didn't change? The actual floppy disk.

Once I found a 5 1/4 floppy disk which actually worked, the "fail on INT 24" problem went away.

Hope this HELPS someone.

Solve : I’m having problems installing Windows XP on an older computer with a newer hard?

Answer»

Here is the problem. I have a Dell Inspiron 531s from 2007 and it came with WINDOWS Vista. I WANT Windows XP on it. With the original hard drive, I was able to get Windows XP to install CORRECTLY if I dual booted it with something else like Windows 7. Otherwise it wouldn’t work and would not detect the OS. However, with a newer hard drive, I can’t get it working at all. I have tried a 500 GB desktop Seagate from 2014 and an 1 TB laptop HGST from 2016, both OEM drives from other systems. Both produce a blue screen as the boot screen fade in is coming up right when you are finishing setup and get to start using the computer. It acts fine until that PART and even the restart from the bios like setup to the GUI setup will complete normally. Is there something I have to do to get XP to install on these drives? Windows 7 and 10 I’m pretty sure work fine. I know they both work on the HGST and can assume they would work fine on the Seagate too. Can someone please help?

The problem is most likely caused by the fact that the HDD you are using is a SATA drive and XP does not include any drivers for a SATA controller. You need to find SATA drivers for the controller in your system and put them on a floppy drive (XP will only look for drivers on a floppy disk in drive A:).

The alternative is to add SATA drivers to the XP installer disk via a process known as slipstreaming. See here: https://www.terabyteunlimited.com/howto/howto-xp-sata.htmHi Ryan

Another thing to check is in advanced settings in the bios if you have a setting for Raid make sure this is turned off.You said it was a 2007 model? Are you sure?
There have been a number of changes in hard drive geometry for personal computers from a few years ago. Here is a link with some of the sises using large drives on older PC models.

https://www.win.tue.nl/~aeb/linux/Large-Disk-4.html

Yes, it is about Linux, but the trouble is in the BIOS of the machine. Th link above is not a full explanation, but serves to show older computers had trouble with using very large disk.

The simple answer is to try a small IDE hard drive and format it to use a small amount of drive space. Try below 8 GB and see if that works.

Geek, the Inspiron 531s doesn't have any IDE Host Adapter. it only has SLOTS for SATA. SATA drives are not subject to the BIOS limitations you are referencing.

The issue is exactly what strollin has mentioned- XP simply doesn't include SATA drivers.

There is an option to enable/disable RAID in the BIOS but it's unclear whether this controls RAID itself or will toggle between AHCI and IDE. (I don't want to toggle it because my 531s is working properly with Linux right now)

Solve : Xp media pkg 2 help?

Answer»

Looking for advice
I decided to revive my Dell Inspiron E1505 media package 2 which was pre installed. My end game would be to connect to the internet and use excel on it. I did not know xp went dark. Is there a way to have a newer version of windows installed and get the laptop working again?

Side note I have wireless connected but no internet browser. Is this because of windows xp?Anything later than XP isn't likely to run particularly well on a E1505. You might "get away" with it for your tasks as long as you have the system maxed out with 2GB of RAM, but you would need to purchase a license and it doesn't seem LIKE it would work AUTOMATICALLY- you'd need to tinker with several drivers.

XP only "went dark" in that the OS no longer receives security updates from Microsoft. So if it doesn't start or has a black screen that isn't RELATED to any support changes. I have a few SYSTEMS running XP and they are both FULLY capable of web browsing and using applications.

Solve : defective music audio in my presario laptop with maxthon5 browser installed.?

Answer»

I have a compaq presario r3000 laptop. The operating systemXP cushed and I reset it with a clean reinstallation but I could not get connection to the internet. It was SP2 and I installed SP3 and then the MAXTHON5 browser, but the PERFORMANCE was not acceptable and I upgraded from 512 MB to 2 GB.
the surfing performance improved to an acceptable level but the music audio is still defective, with frequent pauses of about half a second and some distorsion. SOMETIMES I get the pop-up to install new updates, I THINK described as java7 updates, but NOTHING can be done if I try to install them.
I appreciate any information on how I can improve the quality of the music audio to at least an acceptable level.
(I did not see the box to check "Notify me of replies")Did you re-install ALL the drivers from Compaq > ? ?Thanks for the reply.
I installed the drivers with the supplied drivers CD after resetting the OS windows XP with a clean installation, but I could not connect to the internet. I could only get a small partial USE of the MSN webpage.
Do I have to install the drivers again now that I installed the MAXTHON5 browser for the purpose to correct or improve the music audio?
I appreciate any information or suggestions about this music audio problem.

Solve : Trouble rebuilding old Bare Bones Laptop ASUS C90S winXP from 2007'ish!?

Answer»

I am currently running XP Pro sp3 build 2600; 3GB RAM.

When I attempt to install drivers for my audio and video cards, the installs fail because the installer can't find compatible hardware. It is always the same, whichever drivers I try and that includes the ones from the original driver install disk.

Audio:

I have Realtek audio of some sort, but at the moment I am having trouble locating exact info.

Whenever I reboot, new hardware wizard attempts to help me install software for "Audio DEVICE on High Definition Audio Bus", but all paths lead to failure.
(the original disks simply provides install driver failure message, as does V-R1.70 and recent driver for XP, R274 gives error: 0x0000227)

Video:

I have Nvidia 8600m GT 512 MXM2

However all attempts to upgrade driver end in error or failure.

The OEM driver says it can't locate any drivers compatible with my hardware. Whichever, Drivers I attempt to install, (old and older) will fail with this same message.

If I open sys info:

components\sound device - says "unimodem 1/2 duplex audio device" with some additional info

components\display - this section is completely blank. However, there is a listing in problem devices - "Video Controller (VGA Compatible)"

If I upgrade to Windows 7, then all audio problems are solved and a proper entry will be listed in "sysinfo". I don't RECALL of hand, but it shows that it has realtek and audio works.

Unfortunately, the video after driver upgrade is unstable and crashes the machine.
There are old posts about incompatibilities with this video card and win7 (error10), that had me running vbs scripts, ect. but nothing helped.

In the end win7 ran so slow with my 3 big gb of RAM that I decided to give XP a try.

The notable difference is that with Win7 after install I have entries in sys info and am able to upgrade drivers, but with XP this is not the case.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Are you using the drivers from the ASUS website? It appears to list the drivers for Windows XP.

Unusual t hat the original Driver install disk doesn't work, but It may be that the provided installation was Vista at the time and therefore has Vista drivers on the disc so cannot find the drivers for XP.I have tried the drivers listed on Asus Web site. They will not install...
MANY of the oem drivers still work. This has always been an XP system. I ran it for a while on win7.
I have difficulty finding a browser that will allow me to connect to microsoft for any support, if ANYTHING could even be available.
I am running IE8, but can't really do much with it. I can do a little more browsing with UC Browser, but neither will help me access any support.
I am not really concerned with opening email or surfing the web, I just wanna run a few old programs.
It seems right now my pc is unable to recognize my sound and video cards in a way that win7 easily sees them. Unfornately, with win7 Video crashes (screen black, machine would still seem to be running) and on win7 the machine runs to sluggish to be easily dealt with; Browser issues, JAVA troubles, ect.
So, that's why I was trying with to go back to XP.
Thank you for your input.

Hi all!
I NEED a good Windows XP emulator on my iMac.
One that comes with all the ROMS necessary to run Windows XP on it already there.

PLEASE help me!!!The only legal way will be to buy a RETAIL XP install disk and install it as a virtual machine using VMware or Virtual box
Thanks There are Windows Emulators for Linux. These do NOT use any Microsoft code, so they are legal. There are too many to meson only one.
Here is a list:

Six Linux Emulators for Windows Download

These run Widows inside of Linux. Is you Mac use a Intel CPU?

Is there a Windows program YU need to run? Almost anything that runs on Windows has something like it on the Mac.

If you can not find a good solution, there might be anther way. Tell us why you need Windows XP? They COULD be another way to do the same thing.

One possibility is running Windows XP on a remote machine.

Solve : microsoft explorer error???

Answer»

my microsoft explorer keeps CANCELING out and closing... so the task bar and icons disapear off the desktop... i dont know how to fix it.. it just pops us explorer error, with the close or details buttons... then i have to restart in order to open any programs, as soon as i open something it all closes... what do i do to fix it... i have windows 98, hewlett packard pavilion..?? please help!Did you install the latest security updates?

Scan for viruses, trojans and spyware.i did a norton virus scan a few days ago and this started happening after, i deleted the bad files... i also have 2 weird programs in my ctrl+alt+del menu... they are called Rnaapp and Ccapp, i cant get rid of them... please help!!I am not certain, but I donot believe you would want to remove those.

I suggest you go to the Viruses & Spyware section and read the 'Please Read This First - Viruses & Spyware' sticky for more information. This may help you solve your problem.ccApp is an important part of the protection that Norton AntiVirus (NAV) or Norton Internet Security (NIS) provides and should not be disabled at startup.

ccApp.exe is the common hosting application that is used by both NAV and NIS. It calls the different program features in NAV and NIS. For example, in NAV, if Auto-Protect and Email Scanning are enabled, then ccApp.exe makes sure that those programs are running. If ccApp is disabled, then Auto-Protect and Email Scanning will not run.

Rnaapp is part of DUN (dial up networking). Some programs that access the internet will load it, whether it is needed or not. You use task manager to "end task" without doing any harm as long as you are not connected through a MODEM. Odds are that it will just be RELOADED if you have a modem and a program requests a connection.just wondered if you are using internet explorer six?if so uninstall it?no i do not have internet explorer 6... i use aol... but when the illegal error message is on the screen i can still open and use any programs, but if i CANCEL the window then the taskbar and icons disapear... so what should i do to fix this error message??? please help, thanks! The problem is windows explorer, not IE. Sometimes, but not always, the problem will go away if you do a cold reboot. When you use "restart", windows does not clear everything out of memory. Use "shutdown", then turn of the POWER to the computer. Wait at least 30 seconds, then power back on. If you have Norton System Works, run Win Doctor.i tried the cold reboot, it didnt work.. i also tried a scanreg/ thing... but nothing has worked! please help... the windows explorer says it has preformed an illegal operation, and you can open programs but then in order to use them u must close the explorer. The ctrl+alt+del menu doesnt work unless the explorer is closed.... please help!ok here is the options in the cotrol panel...go to the add/remove icon click it....then scroll down the list and click m$oft internet explorer..click it...and then click remove ...dont panic...a splash screen will appear it may say repair internet explorer...or there is this link>http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=249191its not my internet explorer that is broken, its my microsoft explorer, the taskbar at he bottom of the page disappears after i have to close it... should i still fix or whatever the internet explorer>>whoops got my wires crossed try this try deleting \Windows\Shelliconcache this is a cache file for icons it can cause these types of errors if it gets corruptedWindows will re-create it upon reboot. ok...
ok, i would love to do whatever u told me, but im not sure how to get into the computer cache to delete that, or whatever, so if u could elaborate it would help, thanks!!!this is almost the exact thing that was/is happening to my computer (windows ME)..

I would try to open internet explorer, but then a prompt would come up informing me that it was causing an error in unknown. "Ok.. close it" then it would prompt me again saying that the winodw was busy, and that closing it MAY cause problems. Minimizing or maximizing would look as though it was moving to BELOW my cpu clock. Norton couldnt find anything, and ad-aware couldnt finish its deletion process...

Honestly, I dont know what do do, so as of right onow, I'm formatting my hard drive in an attempt to reinstall win98... but for some reason I foresee problem with this action.... any help is appreciatedthe both of you have problems related to nav it seems i dumped mine and got a free one anti virus program?emily can you take win2k dummys advice and run win doctor it was silly of me to suggest that you to play with your reg?...can you plaese bth of you post the error messages....thanks..

Solve : HP Pavilion 7420 colors/drivers?

I do not have original start-up DISCS and no drivers. The monitor color choice as of now is only 16 colors (was much higher); none of the kids' games will run.

The computer HD has been formatted and Win98 has been installed (new, unopened copy).

Is the color problem driver-related or something else?

I downloaded a video driver from HP's website but have been unable to install it. How do I do that? Where can I get or buy a complete set of start-up discs for this machine?

THANKS, everyone, for any help!

Solve : Isolating a winXP machine from the network.?

Answer»

So im got a freebie the other day and im going to stick XP it, mainly for retro gaming.

What i want to know, is the best way to isolate the MACHINE from the other computers on the network.

Im not at all fussed about the xp machine becoming infected, and might actually intentionally infect it for a BIT of fun a virus related nostalgia, but obviously need it to be isolated from the other machines.

Has anyone done this and got any tips?

Im guessing its just a case of setting up a firewall on the xp machine to prevent any outgoing CONNECTIONS to the other machines?

Cheers.

Hi
Just don't attach it to the network, if you need to use it on the internet then PUT it on wireless. Then setup a guest network on your modem/router and only attach the XP to the guest network. The Guest network on a modem/router only has ACCESS to the internet not the other computers on the network.

Solve : Removal of Tasks Panel in Windows Explorer?

Answer»

In Windows Explorer, you get tasks panels based on what is in the folder you're looking at, like "Picture Tasks" or "File and Folder Tasks". I would like to remove these but NOT the "Other Places" or "Details" panels, but don't know how to do it.

You have the option to switch to "classic" view and remove the lefthand taskbar altogether, but I don't want this. I want something closer to how Explorer works in Windows 7 where you can JUMP to different directories and can get immediate file details just by highlighting something. I only want to remove the options that are OTHERWISE present in the right click drop down menu.

Is it possible to disable those panels with a regedit?

Solve : A way to create a text file of the accounts on an XP machine?

Answer»

Hi everyone,
Is there a way to create a text file of the accounts on an XP MACHINE? We are doing a hard drive retention for the legal DEPARTMENT and one of the steps is to put the accounts from a hard drive into a spreadsheet. It is one drive to a LINE, the accounts into one cell in that line, number of accounts can range from 1 to almost 200 depending on the use of the computer. Having to type all of those accounts is REALLY annoying and time consuming, so anything at all that MAKES the process easier is very much appreciated.
Thanks What type of file are these accounts MADE and what are they saved under?

Solve : Browsers cannot find servers and open pages?

Answer»

Greeting all. I am trying to revitalize an old Acer Aspire One running XP Pro. Computer is doing FINE except for one major issue. My wireless Network Connection is showing that it is connected, speed is 54.0 Mbps and signal strength is excellent. I have two browsers. Firefox and IE8. Trying to access a page with Firefox returns the message "Server not found". IE8 displays the message "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage".

My question to you all is obviously, WHAT IS GOING ON? WHY IS THIS HAPPENING? HOW DO I FIX THIS?

I've been given many "SUGGESTIONS" and tried them all. Re-install network adapter. FORGET wifi network and re-connect. Toggle Airplane mode. Check for a firewall. Make sure proxy is not turned on. RESET winsock. And a suggestion that the old browsers are compatible with the net and won't work.

Someone out there must know the real answer. GOSH, I hope. I look forward to seeing the replies. Make me a happy man.

Thanks for checking out my post.Probably, the problem is in the system itself. Windows XP OS is not supported anymore. Moreover, if you install it and plus get latest software, the system will not simply “understand” it. They are not compatible. Use at least Windows 7 or 8.Nonsense, I use XP all the time.Hi

Have you checked the system date and time are correct ?

Although if they were incorrect you would get a different ERROR still worth checking.

Solve : boot sector virus??

Answer»

I need help in FINDING out how to get rid of a possible boot sector virus. I get a green bar for 1/2 a second across the windows loading screen
while I boot XP, so I figured my boot sector was damaged. I ran the windows recovery and at the DOS prompt I ran CHKDSK with
the following results:

78140128 kilobytes total disk space
36633036 kb are available

4096 bytes in each allotcation unit
19253032 total allocation units on disk
9158259 allocation units available on disk

**Volume APPEARS to be in GOOD condition and was not checked, use /P to check volume**

I used chkdsk/p to check the Volume anyway and heres what I got :

Chkdsk is performing additional checking or recovery...
Chkdsk is performing additional checking or recovery...
Chkdsk is performing additional checking or recovery...
CHKDSK found one or more errors on the volume

78140128 kb total disk space
36633032 kb are avilable **note this is 4 kb less than whats reported in chkdsk**

4096 bytes in each allocation disk
19535032 total allocation units on disk
9158258 allocation units available on disk **note this is 1 unit less than reported on chkdsk**

I've used avast and bitdefender anti virus programs to check the boot sector and to scan the entire hard drive, but nothing comes
up.

Is there anyway to fix this problem? I've noticed a huge slow down in performance from this computer since the green bar
started appearing during the windows load up. Last time this happened a while back, I did not know about boot sector virus
and after three or four reformats I finally gave up because I came across the same problem over and over.

I need to find a way
to fix the volume, and using fixboot and fixmbr in the windows recovery haven't worked, and last time this came up deleting
partitions and fdisk did not work eitherI am not too knowledgeable concerning bootsector viruses, but I understand that if you were to use a boot floppy, the floppy could be infected.

However, XP does not require you to use a bootdisk, unless your CD-ROM is not supported. Are you using an infected bootdisk to install Windows XP?

Solve : Best Lightweight Antivirus for Windows XP??

Answer»

Hello again.

So, to the point. I don't think this computer has ever had an antivirus ever. In the past i only used like one or two programs on it.

But now its my main computer, as my Windows 7 isn't working, and i just want Ubuntu usb booting for one purpose: Minecraft. Maybe some basic web browsing on top of that, but not much more.

But I just realized about my Xp, as i do active downloads, checking e-mails for 3 different e-mails, which of ive had one been hacked, its on pretty much all the time, either in a VM or browsing the web, sometimes on public Wi-Fi, sometimes on mine. I use it for web browsing, a lot of downloads, YOUTUBE bingewatches, etc.., pretty much all I do on the internet on it. Sometimes even dealing with payments.

So, i just got to thinking this. Shouldn't i use an antivirus at this point? Im looking for a free one or a free version, but one that is also resource light.

I normally use FireFox, sometimes Chrome

Heres my specs:

Intel Core 2 Duo T2300 1.66 Ghz
1.5 GB RAM
Intel 945GM 224 Mb
Windows XP SP3

And i don't want to install linux on it, as i don't know much about linux, and I need a Windows machine for some programs that only work on Windows.

Any suggestions would be helpful.

https://www.avg.com AVG might still support XP the free version should be good enough if you scan files before opening or running them.AVG works, but one problem. Its a memory hog on my computer, using up too much RAM where i CANT start up my virtual machines that can only use 300 MB of RAM. 300 MB! And i normally can have 5 firefox tabs open and it starts up fine! Not to mention spiking up my CPU usage randomly.

I have to uninstall AVG for my computer resources sake.I use Avast but they had a lot of false/positives popups which I ignore. That's the only drawback with Avast. Why did you not mention it's a VM ? ?

A/V apps aint gonna run on that much Mem as to what they have to do...just sayin.Quote from: patio on October 13, 2018, 05:03:49 PM

Why did you not mention it's a VM ? ?

I understood that as the system running Virtual Machines. Which is pretty ridiculous with only 1.5GB of RAM to begin with.I didn't read thoroughly the 1st go around...at any rate it's silly to expect anything to run proper...It is not a virtual machine. I use virtual machines on it. Normally when that's running its the only thing running at the moment in terms of programs, the VM itself. Good thing i just ordered some RAM.

Guess that RAM I ordered to go to being able to do 1080p in YouTube goes towards an antivirus... ugh.

Just to let you guys know, the laptop came shipped with 512 MB RAM. I bumped it up to 1.5 GB. And the laptop is 10 yrs. old, so that was a long time ago.

My VMs are Puppy Linux, Macpup, Windows 2000, SliTaz, and DSL Linux. Look the requirements up for RAM for them. Its pretty low.Panda Security Cloud Antivirus Free (suggested) Panda Security Cloud Antivirus Free has its price in its name, which turns out to be one of its lesser selling points. ...
Bullguard – 60% discount. Bullguard is a trialware antivirus option that looks clean and has a great protection rating. ...

Malwarebytes Free, Superantispyware and Agnitum Outpost Firewall 2009 is all the software I use, and you could likely do without the Superantispyware. A MikroTik router with NAT & SPI hardware firewall is what I credit with keeping my XP Pro safe all these years.Speaking of which...Well, I went to that wiki thingy to find out what that necro-thingy meant and now I have to go find out what some sort of disambibi-thing means, but here is what some scholar wants to teach me/us:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Necromancer_(disambiguation)

Quote
A necromancer is a person who practices necromancy, a discipline of black magic used to communicate with the dead to foretell the future.

By the way, I was once able to install Malwarebytes on a unit with less than the required RAM, just in case anyone wondered if it could be DONE. I forget why I did it, but was probably testing something. I have the records on that one on of my units around here. Maybe just last year.

I make note of that, because I am rather sure it is Malwarebytes that indicates a need for some minimum RAM before you can install it. I didn't see that made note of in that post up there a bit.

Now I have to go study that necro thingy and that disambibi thing. Conversations with FOLKS that have moved into another place, eh? I don't think I'll be bringing this up at a VFW meeting.

Solve : Browser out of date?

Answer»

About two months ago I started having problems logging into one of my bank accounts. They told me to update my Google browser but the PROBLEM remained unresolved. They later told me that they no longer SUPPORT XP which was not correct. The problem was that Google no longer supports itself on XP. I SOLVED the problem by downloading and started using Mypal browser which is designed to run on XP. Problem solved.

Solve : Windows XP - Updating in 2021?

Answer»

This board hasn't updated in a while... Anyone else still using Windows XP?

I RECENTLY fished a Tektronix DPO7104 oscilloscope out of the scrap bin.
IIRC core 2 DUO 4GB ram 160 gb sata hdd I will be upgrading it to an SSD ASAP - I am waiting on the hdd caddy adapter.

It came with a clean install of XP SP2 (32 bit) with all of the Tektronix specific utilities already loaded. I want to get all the O/S updates that were available. Does anyone know of an easy and official WAY?

My backup plan is to use this unofficial update pack:
https://msfn.org/board/topic/171171-introducing-unofficial-windows-xp-sp4/
I've installed it in a VM and it seems to do what it says it does. Does anyone else have experience with this software?

Solve : Warning : small virtual memory , increase paging file size?

Answer» HI everyone :

I have Pentium 4 , CPU 1600 MHZ , 1.59 GHz , 512 MB of RAM , with 3 hard disk drives . Drive F is master , drive E is slave to F, Drive C is slave to my cd rom drive . The operating system is Microsoft windows XP professional , version 2002 , service pack 2 , and I am the administrator .
When I turn on the computer , it shows a message warning about small paging file size . I GO to "virtual memory" dialog box to fix the problem . In the "paging file size for selected drive" section , "custom size" is toggled on , "initial size" and "Maximum size" are set to 1000 and 2000 MB respectively for all my 3 hard disk drives. But , in "TOTAL paging file size for all drives" section , "currently allocated" is shown to be "0 MB" , which is in contrast to the paging file size I've set . Although I reboot my computer after setting my paging file size , the contrast still exists , as if the setting has not taken effect . I've no problem with paging file size in my other 2 pc's .
So, HOW CAN I MAKE THE PAGING FILE SIZE SETTING TAKE EFFECT ?
Please help me . I deeply appreciate you guidance .

Is the "Let Windows manage" button unchecked ? ?
On the drive that CONTAINS your OS set the lower and upper amounts to 768Mg of memory and re-boot...see if these #'s stick.
Also check and report back with the amount of free space and total space on each drive. Sometimes if the settings are too high Windows will just ignore it and use it's own dynamic settings. The answer is found in the following links :
