Solve : Enable Memory Slot~?

Answer»

Hi everyone.

Today I just bought my self two memory stick of RAM (1gb each) to give my PC a LITTLE boost, but when I plugged them in and turned my PC on, I noticed only 1 was working, so I unplugged and re-plugged both to be sure and still have the same problem.

I made a quick search on google to check would could be happening and I figured out my PC has only one Memory Slot available.

My computer:
http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/ca/en/ho/WF06b/12132708-12133156-78308260-78308260-78308260-79482143-79917661.html

I was wondering if there is a way to enable that other Memory Slot so I can use my second memory stick.

Any help would be appreciated,
~ SalokinX1. Memory Slots. I'm not sure how many memory slots you have on your motherboard (two or three), but the specs indicate you may only use "two" memory slots. Your MACHINE comes from the factory with 512 MBytes of memory. You should pull it out and use your two 1 GBytes memory modules instead.

2. Memory Specs.

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00820266&cc=ca&lc=en&dlc=en&product=3339274&dlc=en&lang=en

http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.aspx?model=Presario%20SR2150NXWhen the specs SAYS "One available" like that, it simply means that you have 2, one is in use (with the ram that comes from the factory), and so 1 slot is available for you to use. But both slots are ACTIVE.

Did you buy both RAM modules together as a kit, or was each one purchased seperately?Maybe it's not the memory slot. What happens if you plug in just a single 1 GB memory module? Does it only report 512 MB of memory?

If so, maybe your memory module has HIGH density chips whereas your system will only accept memory module with low density chips.

For what it's worth:

Solve : xp home edition MBR messed up?

Answer»

I went to make a norton's ghost image of my hard drive. something went wrong. My master boot record got screwey. I now have to use a start up floppy made from a program called xpquick. A MENTOR of mine tried to set the boot.ini file and copy two other standard windows boot files but that did not work. Bios changes do not work either.
Its no big deal but i would like to fix it. any suggestions ?1. Error Message? It would be helpful to know what the current symptoms/error message is when you try to boot from the hard drive? Knowing how far you get in the boot/startup process helps identify where the problem occurs.

2. Since the boot floppy works; then regarding the hard drive it is my guess:

a. The Master Boot Record (MBR) structure is ok because your system is able to access the hard drive and read files on your boot volume (containing Windows XP operating system).

b. The primary partition containing your system volume (C:?) may not be set "active" in the partition table of the MBR. I'm wondering whether it got cleared by the Ghost program. During startup you look for the system boot files in the "active" primary partition. If it isn't set "active" or the appropriate system files aren't there, the hard drive will not boot.

c. The Boot Record on the "active" primary partition (system volume c:) may be damaged/corrupt or no longer pointing to correct location of NTLDR.

d. NTLDR, NTDetect.com, Boot.ini issue. Any one of these files could be missing, damaged, corrupt or in the case of Boot.ini; misconfigured. Sounds like your friend probably checked for this or replaced them with "fresh" copies.

3. Start by determining whether the primary partition containing the system volume (logical c: drive) is set "active". Use your boot floppy to boot into Windows XP.

What is the logical structure (division into logical drives) of your hard drive?

If more than one logical drive, what does each logical drive contain (ghost, windows)?

Is the system volume, logical c: drive, a "primary" partition and is it set "active"?
Is it the only primary partition that is set active? If there are other primary partitions are they also set "active" (they shouldn't be)?

Use the "Disk Management" tool to do this (hope Windows XP Home Edition has it). One way to access tool is:

a. Left click on "Start" button, start menu is displayed.
b. Right click on "My Computer" item, a drop down menu should appear.
c. Left click on "Manage" item, "Computer Management" window should open.
d. Under "Storage" subcategory, left click on "Disk Management". Right HAND pane should include all your hard drives with partition/volume.
e. Find the system volume on the bottom half of the right pane. Is it "color" coded as a primary partition (dark blue, I believe)?
f. Right click within the system volume. From context menu you should see something like "Mark active partition". If you're on a primary partition and the item is grayed out, I think it's currently set active.

4. XpQuick. And thanks for the "tip" about xpquick. I'll have to take a closer look at it.You could also try running fixboot and fixmbr from the Recovery CONSOLE...
Do you have an XP CD ? ?
Recovery Consolethank you. the disk management tool did the trick. my c: drive was not set to active. The reason I was vague at first was that I would get no error. Just a flashing cursor. Norton's ghost must have messed this up.Ghost is a powerful but useful tool...
It's best to be prepared before using...

Solve : windows me help?

Answer»

I went into the garage an took my old PC running ME to work with me to play games on during the slow time of year. After loading several games in it I incurred a problem with the operating SYSTEM.

My problem is I have the original boot CD that came with my PC when it was new but lost the sleeve to it with the numbers on it. Is there a way to explore the CD to retrieve the numbers before I crash the PC?

Everytime I reformatted my windows 98 PC it would ask me for the serial numbers before it would format, and am afraid it will happen again.

Or, if I just reinstall the software through the manufactures CD, would I not need this info to proceed?

Thank You in advance for any HELP on this matter.Quote

Registration key is not on CD, it's on your computer.
You may try to use Magical Jelly BEAN Keyfinder: http://www.shivaranjan.com/2006/09/18/how-to-find-and-change-windows-product-key-and-registration-information/
to retrieve it.

What CDs do you have? Windows CD? Recovery CD? Thank you for the reply. The CD I have is the Recovery CD. I downloaded to a floppy the Magic Jelly Bean and brought it to work and found the #'s I requested.

The reason I was hoping to get the #'s from the CD is because when I got this computer from a place I worked in the past there were a total of 3 PCs all the same(Compaq) running Windows ME.

If I have the Recovery disc for the WRONG Comp ac will the serial #'s still work?

Thank you,

No, because Recovery CD will work only on the machine for which it was created.
You said, that you have original Recovery CD, but the sleeve is missing, so you may give it a shot. In worst case scenario, it just won't work. Nothing to lose.

"other devices" exclaimation points for, network controller, pci flash memory, and pci modem.
I tried searching online no luck, do i need these??
thanks.We need to know the model NUMBER of your Toshiba laptop, please, as well as the operating SYSTEM you have installed on it.its a toshiba tecra s1. I already checked the website, but dont think any of them apply.If you plan on connecting to the Internet, then yes, you'll need those drivers.

You still haven't told us what your operating system is, though.

If you're not too sure what DRIVER to use, then download and run the free trial of Everest. This program will give you more specifics about the hardware on your computer. Once you have this information, go BACK to Toshiba here: Tecra S1 Downloads

You'll need to narrow your results by selecting an operating system and specific hardware device.

Solve : Numlock Help!?

Answer»

Would anybody suggest a solution to my numlock problem???

A few DAYS ago I had to plug in usb drive to be able to use a p/s2 keyboard in my windows xp laptop because my cousin would BREAK my laptop keyboard playing games if I didn't.
I made sure the num lock was off before I put the keyboard away. I even double checked. My keyboard was working just fine then.

But now everytime I START up my computer, my numlock is automatically on. I need it to be off!

I have to keep plugging in the same usb drive and p/s2 keyboard to turn the numlock off. I tried turning off the numlock with the laptop keyboard beforehand and unfortunately it didn't work.

I already disabled it in the registry editor using "0". And yet everytime I have to log on, the still numlock's on. It's getting pretty annoying having to plug in the key board just to log on my computer.

Any suggestions or helpful tips would be greatly appreciated!have you checked your BIOS settings?Yes, I turned numlock off on my BIOS Settings too. But after I save and exit, it's still on.Any other suggestions?I found this:

However, before editing the registry, I suggest CREATING a System Restore Checkpoint.

Solve : video boot problems?

I always need to HARD boot computer at least once to get the monitor to fire up. All I get on first start is the monitor POWER button flashing, as if no signal. Once I hard boot it, the monitor will fire up. I have reinstalled windows, Tried video cards, even tried different monitors with no CHANGE in the computers response. I am fairly computer LITERATE, but I am at a loss for this problem. PLS help me...Is this a Desktop Computer?

If so, unplug the video card, and then replug it.

If that doesn't work, try removing the CMOS Battery (on the motherboard) for about 10 - 20 minutes, then put it back in and see how things are.That was the first thing I did. I also reset bios to factory settings. It is a desktop, It is an IBM netvista, motherboard IBM rev:1.5 I am fairly good with computers, however this problem I have never seen? Completely at a loss here.Can you boot from a CD?yes I can. That is how I install windows. Could a bad ram stick cause this problem? If so how do I test ram sticks?You can check them with this:

Or, try removing all RAM sticks and try booting the computer with one stick at a time.

the backspace key to halt the cursor but surprisingly it doesn't stop cause the writing speed higher than the deleting speed of backspace key.
due to this it is hard to work on computer cause I cann't use keyboard normally.

any suggestiondo you drink pop at your computer station
Sounds like you may need a new keyboard.

Do you have another one you can test with?
no i dont have
it's a keyboard issue?Sounds like the + key is sticking.

Try:

a) turning the keyboard over and tapping the back a few times, or

b) if you have a dishwasher - put the keyboard in face down and put the washer on the lowest steam setting. Take it and leave face down in a towel for a few hours. - Honestly this works, I use it with laptop keyboards as well.

i dont know if it works, cause the issue is stopped for unknown time.

Solve : System 32 ntoskrnl.exe & hal.dll?

Answer»

Hello,

First time poster here, hopefully I'm giving you enough info. to help.

System info: HP Pavilion 750n
Windows XP

Just had my power come back on after hurricane Ike and was blessed with the following message on my computer (it was turned off by the power outage before I had a chance to SHUT it down)
These messages come up and actually alternate between the two messages if I push escape or F2 (or any F KEY) I cannot get past it. I have tried restarting my computer and I have tried restarting it with the system recovery disc that came with the computer.

Here's the messages:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\system32\ntoskrnl.exe.
Please re-install a copy of the above file.

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\system32\hal.dll.
Please re-install a copy of the above file.

Any ideas? I'd at least like to recover the info. I have on the hard drive.

Thanks!

Cindy

Try here: http://icrontic.com/articles/repair_windows_xpThat article seems like it will be helpful if I can figure out how to get to a c: prompt. Suggestions? I've tried hitting F2 as it loads. I haven't seen the message that says:

“Press F2 to initiate the Automated System Recovery (ASR) tool.” When I try to boot up with the system recovery CD.

It just goes back to one of the two error messages.

Thanks for any advice!

CindyYou can't use recovery CD. You need Windows XP CD.Ahhh.... There lies the problem. They weren't nice enough to include that with the computer. I'll have to see what I can do to obtain one.

Thanks,

CindyYou can borrow one, but it must have very same service pack, as your installation.Probably a stupid question, but, how do I know what service pack I need?

The system recover discs are a set of 10, they are labeled Windows XP Home Edition, System Recovery, hp pavilion home PC. It says on the CD's "This CD contains a backup copy of all software originally installed and can ONLY be used with an HP home PC. Refer to the printed instructions provided with your Recovery CDs" (Instructions were about as clear as mud and didn't work)Yeah, they're recovery CDs, and they won't work in this case.

If you KEPT your Windows updated, I'd assume, you have at least Service Pack 2 installed.If you don't have any important data on your computer, you CAN use recovery CDs, but this process will erase everything, and return the computer to day1 state.Oh no, that's what I'm trying to avoid. I haven't done a complete backup for 3 months (shame on me) and I have TONS of photos on there.

I just have to figure out now where to get a program to borrow. I'm wondering if I can obtain one from microsoft, since I did purchase the program with the computer initially....Surely, you can buy Windows CD (Amazon, for instance).
Sooner, or later, everyone needs it, and it looks like it's your time now.That's what I'm going to do. It looks like the most recent service pack is 3, and since I just updated my computer last week it makes sense that's what I'd need. Sound right? If I buy with service pack 3 and I'm only at service pack 2 will it still work?Yes.

I have had this issue before and mine was always UNSTABLE even after I got XP to finally load on PC. The CD drive I was using was part of issue it was not good so it would stop spinning while loading OS. U may CONSIDER that HARDWARE failure can be to blame on either CD drive or floppy. Why floppy...shouldn't you be able to load ME from CD alone? Maybe change Bios to look at CD first when booting.

Solve : Desktop icons loading slow?

When I start up my COMPUTER it takes a long time for the programs to load. Then when the computer loads 2-5 minutes any program selected to run, runs normally. I tried disk defragment, disk cleanup and virus scanning and those program do not really help . Here are my computer specifics.

Hp a810n

2.40GHz AMD Athlon 64 3300+ processor, 256KB L2 cache, 1600MHz FSB
512MB PC3200 DDR SDRAM memory, EXPANDABLE to 2GB
160GB 7200RPM Ultra DMA HDD
48x CD-RW, 16x double-layer DVD-RW
Integrated SIS Mirage 2 graphics card with 128MB shared video memoPrograms, or icons? What Windows version?I'll ASSUME for now you have XP.

How many items do you have as start up? Stuff that'll show in system tray. Might be worth a temp disable of these one at a time just to see.

Does SEEM that sometimes the icon loads are HELD up by heavy processes trying to grab resources while loading into system tray.

Solve : HP ScanJet 5300C - Windows XP?

Answer»

I have had this scanner for 7 years and have had no problems. I just used it LAST week but now when I try to use it, the bar light flashes constantly. From what I found out on HP site is the scanner runs it's own diagnostics and when blinking, there is a problem. does not mean your scanner is broken. So I tried all of their fixes and NOTHING has worked. I uninstalled and re-installed program, still nothing. In Control Panel under Add/Remove Programs, it is there and stated the last time I used it was 8/24/08, but when I click on Cameras and Scanners, the only THING listed is my camera. I had HP do a detection search, they did not find it. I am puzzled as to what to do. HP says uninstall-restall, did that - did all they told me to until it came to drivers. I'm not that computer savvy, so I didn't mess with drivers. Don't know how it could be anything, really, as it was just working and I have done nothing to the computer to change anything. Since I uninstall and downloaded and installed from their website, I'm assuming that download had all updates, drivers, etc., that I needed. This has obviously been a problem before as there is a specific title for it, and I did everything it said - turn off computer, disconnect USB - wait 60 seconds, replug, turn on computer. If lightbar is still flashing, there is an unidentified program error. Okay, if that's the problem, how do I find an Unidentified Program Error?

Thanks for help! Debby
I think your scanner may be broken. The self testing that most computer items does...like computers, printers, scanners, etc... is made to run a list of checks. Not only for drivers but also for sensor checks on the scanner itself as well as motor checks.

In your case the scanner was working and than just stopped. Its 7 years old, which is old. It just maybe shot and you might have to LOOK at replacing it.

A few things you could try are connecting it to another computer and see if it still doesn't work. This will tell you that the problem is not a driver and is the scanner. Than next if you are comfortable pulling it apart, I would open the scanner up and use compressed air to blow the slide off and other moving parts. Sometimes a piece of paper or trash can block the small hole that has a sensor light. The sensor can't be read so the machine fails the self-test. Blowing it out can remove the blocked sensor.

Sorry for the bad news. But the good news is that in 7 years scanners have gotten much better and the prices have come down. If you have to replace it you have that going for you!
Doesn't everything break at the worst times? Hubby to retire - but secretly am glad to be buying new scanner, even though I love this ONE. Like you said, the new ones are much better. I was looking on line to see who has the highest ratings for them, but it overwhelmed me at the number of scanners and all the ratings. It would take days to go through all that! But thanks for the info, at least I wasn't the only one who thought it was ready for the garbage.

Debby
Probably the best approach when buying /looking at new equipment is to start with a dollar amount of what you can spend...
This helps narrow the choices down and can always be adjusted up a little if need be for more/better features.

Does anyone know what the file is that launches the XP search companion when you click on it in the start menu? Is it built into the shell or can it be launched on it's own? I want to TIE it to a hotkey on my keyboard, but I can't seem to find what launches it. I've searching on Google, but all I can find is "click start and select search". My hotkey requires I tell it where the file is to launch.Is this any help?Not really. I just want the search window to open when I press a key. That explains how to make it open with a specific "Look in" location. I wouldn't EVEN know where to start ALTERING that to make it work like I want it to.The search companion seems to be built into "explorer.exe". You could have your hotkey program launch a different file which launches the search companion.

The zip file I attached to this post contains an AutoHotKey SCRIPT which will launch the search companion. If you do not have AutoHotKey, you can use the compiled version that is in the zip file.

[recovering disk space -- attachment deleted by admin]Windows key + F opens search window in Vista, and XP.Search Companion is that AWFUL stupid dog thing, isn't it? (As distinct from the plain Windows Search?)

I've never used it in my life....It is one of the first things I disable after a new install.

Solve : Control Panel & Network Places open My Computer Screen?

Answer»

For quite some time now, clicking on either the "Control Panel" or "My Network Places" icons present in the Start menu take me directly to My Computer, rather than OPENING the correct "FOLDER." I put folder in quotes, because I know that Control Panel is not a real folder, but rather a viewer used for items with the CPL control panel extension.

Let me say that if I GO directly to control.exe and double click it, the control panel works just fine. But if I click the Control Panel link on the Start menu, it just opens up My Computer. I came up with a partial solution simply by changing Control Panel to display as a menu rather than a link via the Taskbar and Start Menu properties dialogue box. However, if I want to access something on the Control Panel menu which has its own sub menu--for instance Printers and Faxes--trying to open the Printers and Faxes menu once again opens the My Computer window.

In Folder Options, I have Control Panel Extensions to open with C:\WINDOWS\rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL %1,%* which I believe is correct. Changing this to control.exe does not work.

Does ANYONE have any idea how to fix this? Thanks!When did the problem start?

Any recent changes? (downloads, installs, hardware changes)Well, I was fooling around in the "folder options" and really messed up a bunch of things. Eventually, I re-installed Windows XP, which fixed most of my problems, but this one remains.

(Gosh, I hate saying how stupid I was!!) Was it clean install?No, I used the Dell disk to re-install XP over top of the existing set-up. Everything else was fixed, just this problem with Control Panel, etc. remains. My other folder problems were fixed. APPARENTLY, if you even LOOK at the folder options, Windows will re-set Windows Explorer to open folders in "search" mode instead of just opening them. The more I tried to fix it, the worse things got. Eventually, I had to do the re-install.The only sure way to make your Windows to work correctly is clean install: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html

Solve : XP Boot Problems?

Answer»

I have an HP Pavilion that has been sitting dormant for about 6 years and I have recently FIRED it up . . . or at least TRIED to fire it up. I tried repeatedly to turn it on, it all powered up, but NOTHING to the monitor. Kept trying until it finally gave me a 'CHECKSUM error' and the option to A:) Go into setup, or B:) Continue booting. I tried both.

In 'setup' I noticed that the system time/date is WAY OFF. (Need NEW 2032 CMOS battery) ... but, eventually it did boot and gave me the same DESKTOP that I had last seen several years before. Clicking on the various links was successful for awhile.

I had to leave for work, so i thought it might be a good idea to DEFRAG the C:\drive. So, I did. When I left for work, it was 28% completed. When I got back 8 hours later the COMPUTER and the monitor were off AND I HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO GET THEM TO REBOOT SINCE.

ANY IDEAS?

Solve : computer freezes... HELP! lol?

Answer»

Please bare with me as I will try to explain what is going on as well as i can....

The computer (a COMPAQ presario) freezes at the compaq logo screen. This screen gives me the OPTION to press esc (to enter boot menu) or f1 (for setup). If I press either of those the computer either does not respond OR states "entering ..." but never enters.

After some research I tried different things one of them being unplugging the HD and seeing if I can access the boot menu or setup which I was able to do. While in setup, scrolling through the different menus, the computer froze and I could no longer use the arrows! This happened several times.

I have tried taking out the battery and jumper to reset bios and I still have the same problems. I ATTEMPTED to reinstall Windows and I cannot boot from the CD (i entered bios (only with HD unplugged) and changed the boot sequence to cd-rom only). If the HD is unplugged the computer will boot from the cd but I cannot do anything with the HD being unplugged!

I am soo LOST. Can anyone help?Run HD diagnostic: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287I tried running the HD diagnostic and it still will not boot from cd. only when i unplug the hd will it boot. Any other suggestions/advice?Replace the IDE cable.

Solve : security programs rebooting?

Answer»

HELP! when switching users my security programs completly shut down and restart. it's not so much the time i lose waiting for the machine as i'm worried that i'm unprotected for a time. i'm running windows xp home sp3. who would be able to answer a question like this? MICROSOFT or the security co.'s. is it a registry fix?What Antivirus and what version of Windows are you running?

Has this problem always been occurring? i'm using the mcafee security anti-virus, firewall and site adviser along with webroots spysweeper. all came with my msn account. i'm using windows xp home sp3 2002 version build 5.01 i belive. and the problem has been happining since i firstset up the machine for seperate users. i keep my machine updated, both windows and the security apps.When you're switching users, do you log off the current user or just switch users, leaving the other one on?
it happens in EITHER case, wether logging off or just switching users.Not sure but you may want to wait for someone with Mcafee.

However, you may want to look into the program settings and see if it may be something in there.

Do you suspect malware? i don't think it's malware because the apps restart when window loads the users settings. its like windows is almost rebooting, it seems to reload the entire start-up almost. it's a puzzler. thanks for your time.Could be an overheating issue...
Remove a side panel and place a small desk fan next to it and see if it stops shutting down.
If so you NEED to update/add some case fans... hey patio. no, not a heating problem. it's just the security apps which are cycling on and off with the user switch. did CHECK just in case. i am going to see what webroot and mcafee have to say. if anything i guess i can shut down the modem while waiting for the apps to restart. AHHAAAA!!!Gotcha...and yes that solution would work.an update for your information. webroot said all i had to do was reinstall the app. didn't work!!! still looking for the solution. i will let you know. ok, here's the final word. webroot again had me uninstall using their uninstaller this time. then they had me install their regular version ( not the msn version ) . this has seemed to work. and now that i have updated my ram and cpu, my mcafee security suite seems to be ok now. once again thank you all for trying. if it starts to mess up again, i'll be back! All right, we'll be here.

Solve : Ebay Icons?

Answer»

My toddler hit the Shift key many times and activated the Sticky Keys. I somehow disabled them but have ALSO changed some settings along the way. Grrrrrrrr!!! I am not at all technical so I am getting frustrated with myself.

1 - The text SIZE of my 'favorites' at the top of the screen are small. I would like them a bit bigger or at least a different font.

2 - MOST IMPORTANT = I made the icons inside my Ebay too big. I have 15 things listed and before they were all pretty close to each other and still at a fine size. Now they are too big and I have to scroll down the entire PAGE to see them all.

Can anyone help me make my Ebay the way it was.

PS: The photo is not the acutal PROBLEM. There is a space UNDER the photo that is just as big as the photo making the area huge.

Solve : XP does not start everthing up?

Answer»

Hello

I would like to start by saying I've been stupid. I'm hoping someone on here can help as it is beyond my knowledge. It started because I have XP home but wanted to be able to remote desktop from my laptop to the affected PC. I found this posy http://www.geekport.com/2007/08/15/enabling-remote-desktop-in-xp-home/ and began to follow it. I edited the productoptions as stated. When I tried to press F8 on start up to use last know good configuration i couldn't as I have a USB keyboard.

(I won't go into everything or the silly reasons I did what I did next as I now know exactly what I should have done)

I went into ms config and selected selective start up and unticked all boxes then restarted. This didn't work obviously. I then found out about enabling USB support and enabled this. I then pressed F* and loaded last known configuration. There were other things I did between these two but I cannot remember exactly now. The long and the short of it is that I finally loaded last know configuration and a LOT of things including internet, usb support for memory stick do not work. My simple way of thinking is that I have loaded the selective start up and cannot get back to the original start up with full support etc. The system restore had been turned off when I mucked about with start up and therefore I cannot restore. I have a start up disc that will restore to factory SETTINGS but i really do not want to do this.

Please can anyone help and believe me I have learnt a valuable lesson.

Ash.Can you try using a PS2 keyboard and then making the changes at startup ? ?I was wrong there is USB support. It's strange what has happened. I don't know if it related to the change of productoptions or not.

I think I will need to restore to factory settings and take this on the chin.

Ash.Having thought about it I have decided to restore to factory settings. I quite liked the idea of starting again once I had got over the INITIAL panic.

Thanks for you help.

Ash.

Solve : System drive frag files - % - your average??

Answer»

Just the system drive here - interested to know what y'all regard as your best average with regular maintenance? I still maintain - even with my XP Pro - Windows as ever makes a mess!

Since COMMISSIONING my HP4600 a good SEVERAL weeks ago now - I have assiduously defragged (O&O Defrag) ...... and starting at about 5% get back to 0.5% - always just four frag files that won't get corrected!

I don't remember managing to keep it this low on last machine but - interested to know what folks regard as best they can achieve with regular defragging.

A vote will do - oh - hang on - where's the poll option? Hmmm - no can find!.

OK - base line let's say 5% or LESS ...... then 10%, 20% etc. Pure curiosity!Steady 5% or less here as i do it weekly...
I use Auslogics.
Different apps will report different #'s as far as efficiency...plus you have to account for the pagefile and restore points...I only defrag occasionally and don't keep track of fragmentation - I also defrag the pagefile PERIODICALLY. A good utility is here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897426.aspx.

that's kind of odd- I've only defragmented once since I got this computer about 3 or 4 monthes ago, and It's on almost all the time... system drive fragmentation is only 1%...

hi i have a problem with the installation of win xp on my laptop.. because when i tried installing win xp on it there is an error message the will says:

Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer. Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or setup program. Setup cannot continue. To quit Setup, press F3.

i tried another xp installer but it goes the same thing... how can i installed XP on my laptop?

please help me...

thanks in advance...

1) What make/model laptop?

2) What OS is on the computer now?

3) Why are you installing a new OS?

4) Is your hard drive shown correctly in the BIOS?Quote from: drmsucks on September 08, 2008, 11:41:11 AM

1) What make/model laptop?

2) What OS is on the computer now?

3) Why are you installing a new OS?

4) Is your hard drive shown correctly in the BIOS?

1. the model of my laptop is toshiba satellite pro
2. as of now the os that is being installed is ubuntu version 8.04
3. because i want to shift from ubuntu to winxp..
4. of course, the drives are corectly shown in the BIOS
1) Is your hard drive a SATA drive?

2) Does the laptop have a floppy drive?

I suspect that you have SATA hard drive and XP does not have SATA drivers; therefore, XP cannot 'see' your hard drive.. Early on after booting from the XP CD, there is a message to "press F6" to install drivers; this is where you would need to supply the SATA drivers for the laptop motherboard from a floppy.

With no floppy drive, the only way that I know to install XP would be to 'slipstream' the SATA drivers onto the install disk. This is a good tutorial: http://news.softpedia.com/news/Install-Windows-XP-On-SATA-Without-a-Floppy-F6-47807.shtml.

Or, if the laptop meets the hardware requirements, you could opt for Vista.

Best of luck and post back!yapz i have a sata drive.. but i don't have a floppy drive...

i tried your suggestion and i FOLLOW the steps on the SITE but when on the step where in i am going to locate the driver that to be integrated there is no file that will appear although i have i already located it. do you have any suggestion where i can find a sata driver for my laptop?

the model of my laptop is TOSHIBA SATELLITE PRO U300I can't find your model on the Toshiba site - there is no U300.

a) Do you have XP recovery disks or a recovery partition on the hard drive that you can use? What OS did the computer ship with?

b) I recommend installing XP from a) because you will need more drivers than the SATA driver and the recovery disk/partition will have all of the correct drivers for your hardware.

c) If a) won't work, post back the correct model number and we'll keep looking!yes, i have an xp recovery disk...

when we first brought the laptop it was xp installed but when my brother used it he installed linux..

and now i want it to be back on xp...

i already tried your first suggestion but there is an error that will appear....

that is really the model of my laptop... toshiba satellite pro u300Quote from: exceed01 on September 11, 2008, 11:18:44 PM
yes, i have an xp recovery disk...

Quote from: exceed01 on September 11, 2008, 11:18:44 PM

I can't locate that model on the Toshiba site - is it possible that your computer is a Satellite, not a Satellite Pro?yes it is a toshiba recovery disk.. i don't really memorize the error the it gives.. but its like something it is not recognize... because when i used the the recovery disk the OS of my laptop is ubuntu..

yah, that's also my problem because i can't find the satellite pro u300 on the site... but when i research on yahoo there is a u300 satellite pro... but i can't find driver for it.

i am really stock on this thing...please help!!!...Okay, let's try to boot from the recovery CD.

1) Make sure that the laptop is set to boot from the CD. F12 may work to select a boot DEVICE - look for a message IMMEDIATELY after startup, or just press and hold the F12 key immediately after you power on. If not, enter Setup (by pressing and holding a certain key immediately after powering on - probably F2 for the Toshiba; look for a message that says "To enter setup press XX." If no message is displayed, press and hold the ESC key. If ESC and F2 don't work, try DEL.) Once in the BIOS setup, look for a Boot Order page or Boot Menu, select the CD as the first boot device, "Save and Exit."

2) Restart the computer with the recovery disk in the CD. Follow the directions on the recovery disk.

3) If an error is encountered, write it down.

Frequently when I go to Start, Turn off Computer, Restart, it will show this message: Installing update 1 of 1. Do not turn off or unplug your computer. It will turn off AUTOMATICALLY" but then it just hangs and does nothing except show that message. I finally have to power down. When I go to Microsoft Update, there is one update, in there but it is Service Pack 3 and I do not want to install it. There is no little box in there that would say: do not show again.

Anyone know how I may correct this?

If automatic updating is on, it will automatically install SP3. The file SIZE is quite large, so that's probably why it says "Installing update..." for so long.Thank you. But I have it set to NOTIFY Me, just so it will not install something I do not need. As I notice there have been some for Windows 2000.

BTW, turning off updates completely is not a good idea. Notify, but not install is probably the best option.
As for SP3, this is my take....
If someone is willing to bet me $100, that one's computer is totally clean of malware, spyware, temporary files, installs leftovers, uninstall leftovers, and such, I'll say, go ahead, and install SP3. If the one is not sure sure, I'd say, leave it alone. It's not a crucial service pack by any means. More, or less it's just bunch of updates from SP2 times to SP3 times. If you kept the computer UPDATED, you can skip SP3, if you wish.
Thanks, Broni. I changed to Not Install from Notify as when I would restart the computer or shut it down, I kept getting the messge 1 of 1 installing. That kept saying that for over an hour so I would have to power off computer each time.

Microsoft Update says I need the Net Framework 1.1 update and Silverlight but it will not install them.

Solve : XP does not boot and computer does not recognise CD drives?

Answer»

While recently using an UNINSTALL program to get rid of some old programs on an almost full 1 of the 2 HD's on my Dell 333, I inadvertently deleted some Register keys which I believe control the Adaptec Directory which I believe also controls the CD rom DRIVES,1 internal , 1 external. Now the computer does not recognise the drives and also XP will not open, it appears to boot then stops on the XP icon. What can I do to to get the computer to recognise the CD rom drive(s) so that I can reboot from the WINDOWS CD or how can I resolve this problem? Do I have to get rid of XP ( delete files using DOS) alltogether and then reinstall and will it reinstall?
Did you restart computer?How else did I find out?go into the bios and make it boot to cd. INSERT your cd and choose repair. I tried that but it does not do anything. It always ends up as it reboots with the XP icon in the middle of a light blue band with 2 dark blue bands top and bottom of the screen. I REBOOTED up and used F8 to get to Safe Mode and it does sometimes get to a Safe Mode window but it always closes and then the same XP icon appears with the blue bands.It looks like bad CD drive to me.

Solve : Error Msg- C:\Windows\System32\ekrn.exe is not a valid Win32 application?

Answer»

hi, and thanks in advance for any help you can give me.
OS is WinXP, SP2 (media center edition) 2002 Running on an HP Pavilion dv 8000 laptop w/ Turion 64 mobile 1.79 Ghz
and 768 mb of RAM.

The message started popping up two days ago. I checked in the processes, and it doesn't show up there. I ran Norton 360 Comprehensive Scans (it is updated) (thinking I might have a virus?)and its not finding anything. I have run Registry Mechanic and Registry Booster.
I checked the file path, and the file exists, so I disabled it, but it didn't stop the error msg from popping up.

The only program I have downloaded since this started happening is iii HomeInventory-308 (insurance institute home inventory program).
I also installed the mininova toolbar (which if ANYONE can FIGURE out how to uninstall, I'll bake you some cookies!!)

I close the error message and it stays closed about 5 seconds and pops up again.

My questions are.... 1.how do I get rid of this msg 2. and is this a virus of some sort?
I have spent the better part of today trying to figure it out and am just happy to find you all here.
Again, thanks for any help
MaryTWelcome to the CH forums.

Look here and here..

Good luckekrn.exe is part of Eset NOD32 Antivirus
Do you have two antivirus programs running?Broni, no only Norton 360 running.

Dusty- I had gone to the two links you said, before I posted, and I'm not trying to run any program, (except what starts up when I turn on the system, would it help to send that?) I ran chkdisk, and scandisk, no problems. I've defragged.
The message pops up when I start the computer. I started it in Safe Mode this morning and tried deleting the file (which has 0 bytes) it did it in Safe Mode , I checked and it was gone. When I restarted, it was back again and the same message popped up.
It still does not show up in the processes.
My instinct is telling me its something simple that I'm missing, and I'm going to kick myself when its figured out. But I'm getting pretty frustrated.
I really appreciate the help and anymore you can give is greatly appreciated.Check to be sure the other anti-virus program is uninstalled with add and remove programs.

Do a reboot and open the registry to the Run key and see if you have any old entries for the virus software and after backing up the key delete the entry for the old antivirus software.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314866
Info on the registry run key.

Than reboot.

If this didn't work you can also click start and go to the run and type MSConfig and look though the start up to see if you can find what is starting when you boot your machine that would cause this problem

Let us know how this works out.
The quoted part of one of the links I posted seems to indicate that your version of ekrn.exe is malware - note that it's in the C:\Windows\System32\ folder:

Quote from: From posted link

Important: Some malware camouflage themselves as ekrn.exe, particularly if they are located in c:\windows or c:\windows\system32 folder. Thus check the ekrn.exe process on your pc whether it is pest.

You could search your registry for an entry which is attempting to start ekrn.exe and, if found, delete it.

Hi, Thanks for the replies.
I did as you all suggested. Looked for any other antivirus program (there isn't any). Under msconfig startup there is ekrn.exe
I unchecked it (both in safe mode and not) and it doesn't stay that way when rebooted. It reverts back to checked.
I went into the registry and searched for instances of ekrn.exe and when found (there were two of them) I BACKED them up and then deleted them.
I rebooted and the same issue is there.
I start the system, the error msg comes up. But NOW when I go into the task manager, it shows up under applications (it did not previously) so I hit end task from there, and it stops coming up.
If I do not do that and just hit 'OK' in the popup it will continue popping up about every 5 seconds.
The instances of ekrn in the registry were under search assist and one came up with a reference to mininova. I am still trying to uninstall the mininova (it conveniently did not come with a utility for that).
So, that is what I have done up to this point.
Thanks again for your help.

also, I got the toolbar off my browser (firefox 3) but it still has taken over my firefox homepage. I'm pretty sure at this point that the mininova toolbar is where the problem came from.
thanks again for helping me out.

[recovering disk space -- attachment deleted by admin]Well, as this entry shows:
- O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [NOD32] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ekrn.exe
you had Eset NOD32 Antivirus installed, at some point.

Go to Add\Remove, and see, if it's listed there. If so, uninstall it.
If it's not listed there, let me know.Hi,
Just looked again, and no Eset, no Nod32 in Add/Remove.

MaryThat's fine.
Since I don't see any infection present, I won't be sending you to "Malware removal" section.
Simply open HJT, and checkmark:
- O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [NOD32] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ekrn.exe
Click "Fix checked" button, and it should take care of your problem.

Restart computer.

Did it. Clicked "Fix Checked" on that line, restarted, and its still doing the same thing.

Ran HJT again and the same line is still there.
- O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [NOD32] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ekrn.exe

Mary

Hmmm....interesting

Go Start>Run, type in:
regedit
Click OK.

Registry Editor will open.
Navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
In RIGHT pane, you'll see NOD32 entry.
Right click on it, click Delete.

Restart computer.

Solve : Can't find info on Flash Drive?

Answer»

I bought a flash drive in Florida this spring. A 2GB Kingston Data Traveler. I put many pictures (jpg) files on it along with Microsoft Word and EXCELL files to bring BACK home to Michigan. I'am a snowbird. When I got to Michigan I put the drive into the computer there it recognizes there is a Flash Drive inserted but says no files are on the drive. Both computers are Gateway the ONE in Fla has Windows XP, the one in Mich has Microsoft Mellinium. Both computers have Microsoft Office with Word and Excell. Why can't I get these files??? Thanks in advance for any help!!!!

Try your Flash Drive on other computers. Do any of them see any files on your drive?Hi BUD1,

Is there any possibility that the flash drive was formatted (or converted) to NTFS file format while it was on the XP machine? Not very likely, but it's a possibility that needs to be eliminated, because if it was, the ME machine won't be able to read it.

If it was, you'll have to plug it into a Windows 2000 or XP machine, copy the files to somewhere else, reformat the flash drive as FAT32, then copy the files back onto it again.

Solve : This is odd - new one on me!?

Answer»

Haha - coincidence - I just took some grabs of one interesting bit of event log - plus grabs of SERVICES.

I need to work on these, having transfered to main machine via USB flash - and either attach or put pics on my server. One thing in event log is a puzzle and I'd appreciate inoput but - gotta go out so - will post again bit later with grabs.Ok - I'd appreciate some thoughts on these if you would.

I haven't had time to go right thru as yet on services - and had to stitch a load of small grabs together off the (horrible huge) safe mode. ... 2 long images.

I am tho most intrigued to wonder what it is that shows on the events log .. and this grab shows the transistion - from last switch on to latest - the first new boot when it did the trick I STILL have ...... then all these errors for ''Lstone" - plus properties on that. That has me puzzled as I do not recognize it at all.

Lot of later errors show for DCOM - but due to seemingly 'can't run in safe mode'.

Any feedback gratefully received.

[recovering disk space -- attachment deleted by admin]Had you recently installed Pinnacle Studio before storing this PC?

Malware infection may be possible.

Have you done a clean boot? http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=310353Dias - no, Pinnacle (my old app) was on from a long time ago. In fact it is not used much now. I do not for now suspect malware but not ruling that out.

But ....... BLESS you Sir for reminding about a clean boot.

Three cheers - a clean boot got me in thru a full normal Win boot ..... I now have to go thru a process of elimination and try and find my rogue item. I'll get to that when time but for now at least - you are on the ''kudos'' list!

I'll post back as and when I (hopefully) find the culprit! Thx again.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
No cuprit found so far - this is a tedious sequence of changes and multi reboots! As of now - and gotta quit for the day - have the MS services reinstated and some of the "unknown" category - quite a few to go yet. Just very refreshing to complete a normal boot and achieve a useable desktop, once more, thx to Dias for the reminder on msconfig.
Feedback later when I track down the itinerant item!are u sure that no one else used it when u were not there?
be sure of that first because someone else might have used it and put on that flash drives and it might have corrupted the filesCheck Black Viper's site for a listing of default services and how they should be configured...Quote from: NEO on September 14, 2008, 11:21:29 AM
are u sure that no one else used it when u were not there?
No one used it. My office is very private territory, locked when I am not there, and only person who uses the machine at all, for faster downloads, is my wife - and I am there too and it's booted for her and ready. It's very secure, like my primary machine.
Patio ... thx for the suggestion - I'll check it out. FINDABLE with google - or do you have a link?http://www.blackviper.com/Quote from: Broni on September 14, 2008, 03:56:46 PM
Solve : volume and brightness control?
Answer»
Hello I'm using Windows XP and have suddenly LOST the ability to adjust volume and brightness from the key board. any SUGGESTIONS?Have you tried RESTARTING?
If you have and it doesn't work, do you remember downloading/installing/opening something that might of changed a setting or something?There is a specific driver that your laptop uses to engage that feature. It may have been disabled or uninstalled by accident. I would go to your laptop manufacturer's website and drill down to the driver downloads for the model of laptop that you have and REINSTALL it. Or you could just tell me your brand and model number and I'll try to post the link.
Solve : wireless connection on laptop sparadic?
Answer» http://I have a dell insperion laptop,Pentium three, 1.2 GHZ with 512 GB of ram, windows XP Pro installed, a Linksys wireless G router on a high speed cable internet connection. The laptop has an internal Dell 1150 series LAN mini card.Up until recently, the wireless was operating perfectly. Now the wireless connection is sporadic, sometimes it connects, sometimes it will not. It is on a secured network with a few other computers at my home, two desktops that are wired, and a desktop that is wireless. The wireless desktop has no problem connecting and is able to see all other available wireless NETWORKS in range(I live in a condominium). I am thinking that the wireless internal mini card is defective but would appreciate any feedback. I rebuilt this laptop about two years ago after the previous owner spilled a cup of coffee in the keyboard, it fried the motherboard and one other printed board. It has worked great ever since until now.Thanks, VinceDoes the laptop work OK with a wired connection to the router?
Can you give a bit more info about what happens when the laptop doesn't connect. Does it drop the connection whilst you are online, does it not connect when you boot up, if so, is it fixed by a reboot?It sounds as though you've PRETTY much diagnosed the problem (if your wireless desktop has no problems connecting) and you've moved the location of your laptop to different places at home with the same results.
One thing you MIGHT try is disabling your security for just a testing period time and see if that makes a difference. If not, re-enable and get a PCMCIA nic.
Alan <>< I had something like this happen to a Dell laptop one time and it was right after a driver update for the WLAN card was put on. It took me forever to figure it out, but the encryption method I was using just WOULD NOT work with the new driver. For a test I would try temporarily turning off the encryption completely and see if you still are dropping the connection. I ended up changing the encryption method from WPA using the AES algorithm to WPA using the TKIP algorithm. You aren't by any chance using a WRT54GX2 router are you?
Solve : Computer UpGrade Problems?
Answer»
How do you outline the actual process, what you must do to enable the computer to recognize the new memory, and how you would troubleshoot any upgrade problems.
Can someone give me some help:
Eric J So, you've installed new memory and the computer isn't RECOGNIZING it, right? Have you VERIFIED you have the correct memory for your computer? If you have the right memory and have it properly installed, the computer should automatically recognize it.
Were are adding memory to existing memory? Give us more detail on your hardware, such as computer make and model, and the exact brand and product NUMBER of the memory you bought, and exactly what is happening when you power on your computer, and then we can be more helpful.there may be rare circumstances, but in all my EXPERIENCE you don't have to "do" anything to enable it to recognize new ram. From what I've seen, if the RAM ain't recognized, it ain't the right type. I may be wrong, wouldn't be a first.
