Solve : Where am I?? |
Answer» I have 2 computers, an XP computer that I love and USE for everything and a WINDOWS 10 computer that I HATE and only use for sites that are not happy with XP (rarely). The problem I'm having is that neither computer knows where I am. When I go to Google news the XP has me in Houston TX for local news. And if I do a Google search for the nearest Golden Corral restaurant it gives me a bunch of Houston addresses. On the other hand the Windows 10 computer has me in MANCHESTER VT for everything! When I search for a similar problem on this site the answer seems to be that location is determined by where your ISP is located. Well, both computers use the same ISP. My actual location is a small town in Upstate NY, Greenwich NY. |

Solve : Bios Won't Load? |
Answer» Hi Everyone, |

Solve : How do I set the default theme location back to C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes?? |
Answer» Very frusturatingly, WINDOWS randomly decided that it was going to use "My Documents" as the default check and save location for Themes. Even though it's SUPPOSED to be in C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes. It's as if it forgot the folder even existed. When I make a new theme, it saves to "My Documents." Even when I MOVE them back to ...Themes where they once again are SUPPOSED to be, it now only checks "My Documents." And now, with the themes I just moved back to ...Themes, Properties decides that "the theme could not load" because it won't look in ...Themes instead of Documents. I am at my wit's end with this NONSENSE and would like to know if I can easily set the themes back to their rightful location. |

Solve : Find Good Ssoftware forWindows XP.? |
Answer» This thread is for those of you that know about good software still usable on Windows XP. Please add to this thread for the benefit of others that still use XP for any reason. My resown is my poor vision. And I am cheap. Some people make a big fuss about the security risk of using XP however there is a security risk in using any internet connection. Windows is actually inferior in two ways. XP is not supported thus it receives no updates. Nothing is worse than wanting to use your computer and Windows 10 wont allow you use your own computer. Windows XP had an extremely simple restore function so if you did have a security issue then then computer could be easliy restored to a known point. This was so popular that microsoft immediately removed the function so that users would be again at risk in later versions.Comment or link? As far as I can tell, Firefox 52.9 ESR went end of life back in September 2018 so it's already out of support essentially meaning there is no supported Firefox (or Chrome) version available for XP nowadays. I dare say the guy in that link isn't a security expert, he feels to me to be more the "just install antivirus to be secure" type of person. When running outdated software you run the risk of complex security vulnerabilities remaining unpatched and exploitable. You only have to look at past vulnerabilities to see what sorts of things are possible. The SMB vulnerabilities that caused the whole Wannacry issue a couple of years ago, issues such as Heartbleed and Shellshock in the UNIX world are all the sorts of vulnerabilities that are only fixable by software updates. This also applies to the software you are running, if you're using an unsupported browser because it's the newest version that supports XP then what if there's a remote code execution vulnerability discovered in the browser that allows a webpage to access the underlying OS? You're going to have a bad time. While I can't speak for everyone, I really can't see any reason for a regular user to need to stick with XP. I don't know about your specific requirements for accessibility features however Windows 10 still supports all the high contrast stuff that XP did and also supports much better DPI scaling than XP making it easy to make text larger. As for the cost, while what is "cheap" massively varies between people, I could pretty easily go and pick up a decent looking i5 desktop with Windows 10 for under £70. Now as for the guy you quoted's "logic" Quote XP is not supported thus it receives no updates. Nothing is worse than wanting to use your computer and Windows 10 wont allow you use your own computer. So updates are purely there to annoy users and don't actually serve any purpose for security or reliability? That's certainly news to me. I totally agree that Windows 10's update policy is an absolute nightmare (and is one of the many reasons I tend to avoid Windows) but updates do serve a pretty important purpose. Quote Windows XP had an extremely simple restore function so if you did have a security issue then then computer could be easliy restored to a known point.I never knew that system restore was a time machine for your entire life allowing you to get your identity un-stolen and undo fraud committed against your bank account... The guy also claims: Quote A huge proportion of commercial computer users are still using XP because there is little need to upgrade and the cost would be substantial. This was certainly the case a couple of years ago however in recent years I rarely see XP being used on any sort of end user workstation, even large companies who used to be fully XP have almost all moved over to Windows 7 or 10. I still sometimes see it in more embedded applications on things like ATMs and point of sale terminals however these devices should be on relatively restricted networks and often the operators will be paying Microsoft for extended support.About XP security flaws: Here Wikipedia article about ATM software and hardware. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automated_teller_machine The article was updated recently. Quote ...My point here is that the XP thing was not considered a major issue in the octave article. It seems that other problems are of greater concern. But the article does need to be updated. To date I have not had a security issues with Windows XP. The security issues I have come from people who take advantage of the crazy way the banks let anybody use your credit card information. That is not a thing related to the OS. It has to do with the policy of the banking industry. About visual aids: Right now I am using Widows 10 to write this post. However, Windows 10 does not seem to understand what I need. I can not read some of the MESSAGES it posts in a sidebar. And by the time I get my lope our, the message vanishes. So the Windows 10 accessibility features are a joke for anybody that really needs them. I am able to post in CH with the aid of the browser, not the OS. I use the zoom feature in Firefox. I spend about half of my time using Windows 10 and the rest either XP or Windows 7. Like the author mentioned,I find it easier to recovery a crash in XP than in Windows 10. And I do not know why. When using Winslow 10 I use new versions of Chrome or Firefox. But for Windows XP I have to resort to the last version Mozilla made for Fire Fox. Anyway, I am among the dwindling minority who are more comfortable using Windows XP rater that Windows 10. At least Windows XP does not nag me. Except that from time to time it reminds me support ended in 2014. Wombs 10 is bad for my blood pressure. Windows XP and even early Releases of Windows have a lot of software resources available. Unofficial service packs and various addons like "KernelEx" can allow them to run software much newer than they could otherwise execute due to compatibility constraints. YOu can find something similar for Mac OS; Though I found PowerPC OS X a bit annoying to find software for, Mac Classic seems to have a lot of software packages including the semi-modern "Classilla" browser. In that context we can probably dismiss security concerns because it would pretty much require that the Classic OS be targeted to be appropriately compromised, so it's less of an issue there. On the note of security considerations, though, I'm going to partly disagree with camerongray here. At least as it applies to end user consumer systems. Servers and corporate workstations should be kept up to date where possible. (Mind, I also disagree with the quoted user- Aside from the points Cameron made, System Restore was not removed from Windows and still exists in Windows 10 and Malware often INFECTS System Restore anyway.) That said, In terms of security, I don't think that vulnerable software or exploits are something that a typical end-user is going to need to worry about, as Trojan horse malware has effectively a monopoly in terms of the infection vectors. People get infected through their own stupid decisions, like setting their AV to ignore and running that installer that the guy said was a false positive, or just happily giving full Admin privileges to this executable you downloaded because you want the shiny carrot on a stick that it claims to provide. Interestingly, Wannacry actually provides a good example of this. Consider that the Eternal Blue SMBv1 exploit allowed the malware to spread from one infected system to another *on the same LAN* (Not over the Internet, unless you specifically forward ports and stuff... in which case well have fun). This is obviously a massive issue for large corporate networks, (As seen with the NHS in that case) but despite the noise made about how important it is the patch it, the underlying problem- the patient zero- which was infected was almost certainly via more traditional means. Which also stresses the point: regardless of whether a system is patched, it could *still be infected* by Wannacry via more "traditional" approaches, and can then still spread it's infection to other unpatched systems. >if you're using an unsupported browser because it's the newest version that supports XP then what if there's a remote code execution vulnerability discovered in the browser that allows a webpage to access the underlying OS? I do not think that dreaming up what-if scenarios is particularly useful. One can presume of course that remote code execution vulnerabilities have been discovered in browsers and therefore they may remain unpatched going forward for an unsupported version. But knowing that, it is fairly easy to take precautions. Realistically, I'd argue that for the most part those precautions should be done generally, because even the latest releases of browsers are going to contain unpublished and unmitigated security exploits which could be being used nefariously. For example, IMO there is zero reason to ever allow Javascript to run on a webpage by default, except for known safe websites (In which case compromising a vulnerable system means compromising the website). Flash and Java are obviously completely out of the question to even be present to be enabled, too. This greatly reduces the attack surface area and removes the primary "drive by download" vectors, or in many cases makes them require some level of user interaction to for example download a compromised EMF file and then view it with a vulnerable viewer. Another aspect is that while a system does not become less vulnerable over time, it becomes a far less likely target. Windows XP is arguably not "out of the woods" yet, but eventually it will be in the same bucket as things like Windows 95 and 98, which are not just a security sieve but a chute with included instructions, but it is unheard of that anything targets those systems for compromise, as the affected targets would be so low It's not worth it. At this Stage I'd argue that as far as exploits go, XP is leaving the focus of malware authors who are now moving towards Windows 7 as their primary target as it nears it's Security EOL. of course I still think "as far as exploits go" is a rather small subset. No sense putting in all the effort to exploit a vulnerability or remote code execution when you can just slap your payload into a program that promises something people want. Nowadays you could probably get a good number of "pwned" systems by simply offering trojan backdoors in a 400KB "Read Dead Redemption 2 PC Conversion super compressed by SkIDmArK.exe" or something, telling them it's a false positive in the readme.txt ("why would they lie, I believe them and also want to play this game so IK throw logic out the window"). They run it, it does nothing, and so they figure it just doesn't work. Then a few months later they take their super slow PC in for service and the tech discovers how they got infected- That's right, their Outlook is missing a security update, so that must be what happened. They give some lecture on security updates and send the customer on their way. Who goes home "Now that my PC is fast again I wonder if that PC conversion of Read Dead redemption 2 will run?" And they start it all over again. Or maybe they see a silly doge screensaver.exe that they just have to have or maybe they see some awesome Windows Theme and must have it and must patch their DLLs and such with untrusted, admin-requiring software because they want the theme. My analogy would be that as important as it is to make sure the castle walls have no easily accessed entry points or weaknesses, there is also no need to design a sophisticated battering ram to get access when the drawbridge attendant trusts everybody.BC, I hit the thank you button for that long replay. Sometimes when I work with XP I disable the Ethernet port. It is easy to do in XP. Near impossible in Windows 10. Instead, I pull the CAT 5 cable from the router when on Win 10. Likewise when using Windows 7. It is now very hard to watch movies on-line In XP. So I spen time in Win 7 or 10 when on a site that does not like XP. One problem is finding a AV that works with XP. My best resits are with Avast and Avira. The free versions, of course. Also I use Malware bytes free version. Libre OFFICE works if you use an older version. As BC said, the bad guys now are looking for ways to fool you with attractive offers. The risk of getting hit by a conventional virus attack is relatively low unless you do something stupid. I keep a second computer on hand for anything I think might be high a high risk. And I make frequent backups. Truth be told I do not think security is an aspect that should be completely ignored, and that One should be mindful of the security considerations and take appropriate steps to try to mitigate them. As I mentioned, I Disable Javascript pretty much as a matter of course and simply whitelist it for specific sites such as this one, because modern Javascript Interpreters have a massive target on their back and I'd be willing to bet they are the biggest way that drive-by downloads and other malicious infections occur without user intervention. "Air-gapping" a system (Not connecting it to the Internet) definitely mitigates security considerations. One could also only keep it connected as long as it is needed for performing certain updates or downloads, too. Not using it for browsing would of course also greatly reduce the possible surface area of those exploits it would be vulnerable to- Even if no mans land has almost no bullets, it's still unwise to peek your head out. I did wonder originally myself what aspects of Win10 would be less accessible than Windows XP, particularly considering DPI capabilities in Windows 10. I assume however it may be inherent to the lower-contrast designs and "flat" style Microsoft has adopted. It makes recognizing certain user interface elements more difficult, even with the allegedly "high contrast" themes. Quote Libre office works if you use an older version. And of course older versions of contemporary software still work as well as they did at the time of release! Libre Office is certainly a more modern alternative but Office 2003 and Office XP can often meet the needs of most users in terms of word processing or spreadsheets. They can often be had for fairly cheap, along with most other contemporary software. Some software can fetch a bit of a higher price though. And, since it will often be used software one takes a chance on whether it is complete or even usable or includes the proper product keys and such. Of course when it comes to such software for the reasons Cameron hinted at it is important to disable any "online" featuresets if the system is not going to be permanently air-gapped. Quote It is now very hard to watch movies on-line In XP. Of course when we are considering ongoing support of software or online services, than the considerations of using Older Operating Systems are something that is no longer in the users control, and there is something of a futility in trying to keep using older operating systems and software while utilizing them. Personally I've always preferred physical Media such as DVDs or Blu Rays partly for this reason. DVD's still work on older platforms and DVD cannot "drop support" for them in the same way say NetFlix can. Same for Blu Ray- those play on Windows 7 and will continue to do so in the future when Media STREAMING services have dropped Windows 7, and they do not require an Internet Connection (Except to download updated key databases, which can be transferred via sneakernet if needed). It's also nice how, where Netflix will arbitrarily pull content, I will not find that my DVDs or Blu Ray's have disappeared for no reason when I go to watch them. (Unless I misplaced them, of course!) |

Solve : Scan disk keeps resetting? |
Answer» whenever I run scan disk I get about 3 bars completed and then it resets and starts over. It will keep doing this and never finish. Likewise defrag does the same thing. any ideas? And is there a way to get to safe mode without shutting down during boot-up? That is actually not a very good way to get into safe-mode, it may DAMAGE Windows files if you attempt to do so. Safe modeThis is a common fault when you have Trojans on your system. You should use SpyBot S&D , AdAware and SpywareBlaster to keep the system clean. (Practically everyone does these days.) I use Delindex.bat from my Windows Start-Up or Emergency Boot Disk (EBD) to remove a lot of junk files and I keep the (hidden) System Restore folder down to just 500Mb. After four years experience with Windows ME I can safely say that using ScanDefrag is one of the best ways to run the maintenance on an ME system, but I had the program custom altered for me by Jon at ScanDefrag. Try Version 5 ·0 and see if that helps you. I use my custom version with Norton Utilities DiskDoctor and SpeedDisk and it flies through the four drives in a couple of minutes. It is MUCH faster now since I changed the HDD to a new model with an 8Mb disk-cache. It is in FACT four times faster than on the old drive with its 2Mb disk-cache. I find that if you are using NERO's InCD then you have to stop it from running as it will block scandisk and defrag. With it stopped the normal Windows ScanDisk and Defrag are equally four times faster than before, but I have noticed an interesting phenomenon. If scandisk is slow, try moving your mouse curser rapidly back & forth across the scandisk progress bar. For some unknown reason this can sometimes speed it up considerably. (Very strange!) Solve : How are 2 separate users in XP independent?? |
Answer» Hi! Best solution would be ... But not sure if you can install 2 copies of XP onto a single drive with 2 partitions to keep them separate ..That works. Cool thanks geek for confirming that XP can be twice on a single drive among 2 partitions.Code: [Select]; ;Warning: Boot.ini is used on Windows XP and earlier operating systems. ; [boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP 1" /FASTDETECT multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP 2" /FASTDETECT multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(3)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP 3" /FASTDETECT In the above the default is partition 2. And the drive letter is D:. of course. Partition 3 might be an extended partition. Deice letter E: Partition 1 is drive C: There are other possibilities. Bear in mind that modern PCs seldom use the OLD MBR thing. Windows XP expects to fin a MBR.So, it looks like Q is away from topic. But understand if is it impossible. MiroWho the heck is Q ? ?I was thinking maybe Quantos = Q, but its best if more than 1 letter for a name. 007 James Bond comes to mind with Q. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Q_(James_Bond)Ok, somebody can report it by his/her favorite movie, somebody knows what this letter means when I ask anything. Who really knows nothing by any way, no matter. Best is to close this thread without taunt. MiroStill have no idea what you were saying...Not sure how hard it is to spell out someones name... I guess I was wrong with quantos for Q. from yahoo... Solve : can harddrive and cd-rom be on the same ide? |
Answer» I think that I have realized that one of my ide slots does not work. I have been using the same ide cable for both the cdrom and the HARD drive. when doing that does the hard drive need to be set as slave or can I even put both of them on the same ide slot? ... 1. Not a problem. 2. One needs to be master and one needs to be slave, you choose. Enter BIOS and verify. 3. Each IDE channel allows 2 devices, a master and a slave. There's a 3rd setting called Cable Select, where it's supposed to be automatic, but I have found it doesn't ALWAYS work. thanks for the help. do you know what it would say if it was the cd-roms fault because i can't figure out if the cd-rom even works. would it say anything about inserting BOOTABLE media? If it can't boot from the hard drive, it will try to boot from the CDROM or the floppy drive (A-drive). Solve : lost notepad on XP? |
Answer» It was there a couple days ago! now when i go to start-programs-accessories-NOTEPAD I get: My browser recently got hijacked, and what a wonderful thing that is, and maybe some day some one could explain that to me. I mean, if you hijack my PC, do you really think I'll buy something form you? You'd be suprised how many people think they are going to get rid of the pyware by buying something. I donot know if Notepad can be found on the XP CD-ROM, you may have to do it this way: Go to Add/Remove software and choose the 'Add Optional Windows components' tab you may be able to untag and then tag the Windows pad again so it reinstalls. actualy that sounds better thanks, i will let ya know how it goes B |

Solve : 1 of 3 errors recieved when asked to 'explore'? |
Answer» Hi....I am using an HP Pavilion PC with Windows ME. Recently I have been experiencing MAJOR problems with my PC. When I try to 'explore' a folder on my desktop or any folder for that matter, I recieve one of 5 error messages. messages like "Explorer has caused an error in SHELL32.DLL. Explorer will now close." "Explorer has caused an error in SHDOCVW.DLL. Explorer will now close." and "Explorer has caused an error in Explorer will now close." I would type up all five, but LAST time I tried to do that my computer freaked out and closed my internet explorer and wouldn't open it again. Rarely, the folder opens and everything works, but this is rare. I have run a virus scan several times, and it always comes up with nothing. WHAT IS WRONG WITH MY COMPUTER?!?! Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.....thank you!! try another browser you are using ie6 YES..Hi!, i hard a problem similar to that and i have tried couple of things but still it didn't work. Did you try to repair you internet explorer, by going to your control panel, Add and remove programs: click on the internet explorer and click again Add/remove and it should prompt you with other window and choose repaire internet explorer. That might not work, but it is worth trying and another thing you could do is to edit you registry,( no reccommended) for newbie. Another thing if that dont work you might want to try to detelete history and temporary..... you must do this in dos by using DISK to boot up in dos and then type:- "smartdrv" and then type "deltree history" and then "deltree tempor~1" without quotes and then after this reboot your computer. If that didn't work you might want to surf on the net some other people might have the same problem. here is usefull site: worth visiting http://www.generation.net/~hleboeuf/ershel32.htm PS. Let us knowHey......well I was gonna try the Internet Explorer repair thing....but in the add/remove programs thing internet explorer isnt listed....so MAYBE I should DOWNLOAD it and re install it? I also deleted my history and temp internet files, but it doesnt seem to have done anything...Well I just reinstalled my Internet Explorer.....no luck....i'd also like to clarify (just if somebody doesnt get it) that I have no problem viewing INTERNET stuff, just I can't open my computer or my documents or any folders like that.I have the same problem. I can view the internet, I cannot open My Computer or My Documents. My problems are with Explorer not internet explorer.do you norton anti-virus program on your pc...rubysoho.........ok can you locate the c:\windows:\options\cab folder in that folder you will find an icon called scanreg......next to it is one called setup click this...and it will re-install your system without you losing anything...and dump kazza?>http://www.mytechsupport.ca/support/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=4482 |
