Solve : Trying to install Windows XP on a Windows 7 laptop?

Answer»

Hello,

I have a laptop I bought a year back with Windows 7 installed on it. The laptop is a Acer Travelmate P243-M-6416, Model number ZQW

Serial number: nxv7baa004230175637600

SNID:23009558776

I WANT to install Windows XP on it and get rid of Windows 7. The reason is I have a newer Windows 10 COMPUTER that handles my normal computer activities, and because I have a lot of old game software I bought at thrift stores that was made for Windows 95 and 98. These won't run on Windows 7, but will run on Windows XP.

I have a copy of Windows XP Pro, SP3, which I went through the installation process with on my laptop. It installed without issue.

However, after installation, I found out that I had deleted all my drivers, as I had deleted all former partitions in the hard drive upon installation. So, now my computer can't do basic functions, including connecting to the internet, and running software. When I try to install my games, I get an error about Runtime Libraries or Direct X.

I also cannot find drivers online for Windows XP for my computer model.

Does anyone have any SUGGESTIONS? Thanks very much for your help!Ain't gonna happen without XP drivers...especially a laptop.

This may help...It doesn't look like Acer provides any Windows XP Drivers for the system, making it, RATHER unusable as you have discovered.

I did find This Site which claims to have Windows XP drivers. I downloaded a graphics driver and it seems like they are the drivers direct from the hardware manufacturer so you might have some luck with those. Do avoid the "Driver update utility", however- that's just crapware the site wants people to install.

I've not had issues running most older games even in Windows 10, except for MS-DOS or 16-bit software.I have a Toshiba A505D W-7 laptop I installed XP 64 on. (well, I tried, , , ,). I finally took it to a computer shop & paid $50 & the dude installed everything, except a toshiba thingie for? protecting the computer from shaking <- some such thing. Looking back, the $50 was cheap compared to wasted time & effort.

1st thing I did was, I cloned a second hdd, just in case, , , , (this laptop has an 'e-sata' plug)

-c-The difference here is your laptop PROBABLY had WinXP drivers...his does not...For what it is worth.... Old computers with Windows XP are a dime a dozen.
Search Amazon or eBay for old computers.
Weill... not a dime a dozen, but some for about $50 in working condition.

I searched of desktops under $55 and got:
89 results for working desktop PC .
...with free shipping.
http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odkw=desktop+PC&_udlo=11&_udhi=55&LH_BIN=1&_mPrRngCbx=1&LH_FS=1&_osacat=58058&_from=R40&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313.TR2.TRC1.A0.H0.Xworking+desktop+PC.TRS0&_nkw=working+desktop+PC&_sacat=58058
The more common brand names should have XP drivers on respective web sites.

Solve : Disk Managment?

Answer»

Just got my main system up and running after a couple of weeks of debugging hardware. Started to add my HD's and got to one that I COULD not access. Windows see the drive, but cannot access it. It's a slave should have been no problem as it was accessable before. Went to Administrative tools, computer MANAGEMENT, and Disk Management was not accessable, notice said "The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.". All other services are available in Admin Tools.

Have disabled all the drives with the exception of "C" (RAID 1) and Computer Management still times out. This is a new one on me, and have no idea what to look for. Have LOGGED in on both Admin and user accounts, also in Safe Mode. Can anyone offer any HELP?How is this drive connected ? ?
Did it have issues prior to this ? ?The drive was connected to an IDE buss as a slave. It had no prior issues. My C drive is or was RAID 1 on SATA. The unit has 7 storage drives on IDE (1 pair is RAID 1 for backup) and 2 on SATA plus the RAID 1 on Sata.

I gave up and wiped the "C" drives and am presently using a single drive on SATA. This is a back up I KEEP for emergencies and have used it to clone my C drives. At present all is working very well. Will Ghost it back to my RAID drive tomorrow.

The "C" drives started to lose all programs, and Avast and AVG showed no viruses. Boot scan with Avast was clean also. What ever it was, it's gone now, just wish I knew what it was. Frustrating to have something break, and not know what caused it.

Solve : How to find my favicon.ico things??

Answer»

Over the years I made lots of favion.ico thugs FRO my websites. The sites are mostly gone, but I would like to collect my stuff just because.

So I found them all in a search in my XP machine. I was about to copy them all to a single FOLDER when I realized that I can not do that.

So my questions is this:
When one has a NUMBER of image objects that are visually DIFFERENT and have the same name, how do you make a way to catalog or index them so you can find t hem? Should I just try and save the results of the search? Is sao, how do you save a search in XP?

prefix them with the name of the site they are from. cnn_favicon.ico for example.
Yeah, that is work I am not like to do work. I would rather watch work.
Is there not some UTILITY that will find a file(s) and write the results to a list?
It would have to give each item some kind of automatic ID. I know I can do something like that with shortcuts. But I want to have the icons themselves save somewhere where I can use them again.
Thanks anyway. I guess I will just have to rename them one-by-one.

Solve : Saving Excel files to rw cd?

Answer»

I use Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition on a Dell computer. Using Windows Explorer, I have saved my Excel files onto a RW CD. During the save process, the files are changed to "Read Only" status. From that point, I am unable to update the files with new information (save over the existing data as you would on your hard drive). I get a message that I don't have access to the file - "see system administrator"

How do I change the files on the RW CD to ALLOW them to be written over with updated information? You cannot SIMPLY modify the data on an RW disc. You need to Format the disc (can be done through My Computer).

If I were you, I would get a USB Flash Drive. They can come pretty cheap and can store from 512mb to 8000mb.
The data can ALSO be modified with ease, just as if it were saved on the Computer.

Solve : My file ames turn green. - Why??

Answer»

When using Windows XP my file names might turn green when I copy files from one folder to another. Look here:

On the left the names are BLACK. When I copy some files to the right folder the turn green.
I found tat this means the files are now locked is some way.
I can remove the encryption, but why did it come on? I have not wen this happen before. Does my AV program do this?
It is an annoyance. I can only get to my copied files if I LOG in as that user. Otherwise I have to put the files in the shared folder. I am using Windows XP when this happens.
Any ideas?

Solve : Ctfmon.exe?

Answer»

Ctfmon.exe is a Microsoft Office process that WORKS with the Windows operating system. This process activates the language bar and ALTERNATIVE USER input. It is a non- essential system process which runs in the background even after quitting all PROGRAMS. This ctfmon.exe can be annoying, as even after disabling it, it remains in Task Manager. To prevent the process from starting with every boot, some steps need to be followed. This can be done from the 'stop advanced text services' selection under system configuration, or one can alternatively DISABLE the process at start-up. Additionally from the office start-up, the Modes User Input should be disabled.

Solve : Shutdown problem?

Hi everyone,

I've got a problem, when I shutdown or turn off my computer it reboots automatically...
I don't know where the problem lies. Please help me guyz, I need your troubleshooting expertise...

Thanks!

LeoWe need more information, Please look here.

Also, does it happen in Safe Mode?I have a temporary solution that might work. GIVE it a try.

  • Go to "start"-->"run"--> and Type in "Notepad.exe"-->PRESS "enter".
  • Highlight the folowing code and copy it.
Code: [Select]@echo off
shutdown -s -f
exit
  • Paste it in notepad. Go "file"-->"save as"--> and save it on your desktop as "Shutdown.bat".
  • Whenever you need to shutdown your computer double-click on the batch file you have jsut created on your desktop.

Hopefully this helps as a temporary solution!! I had this problem with my old K6-2... I don't think I fixed it, but the problem was related to APM/ACPI support in the BIOS. Any time the computer would normally shut itself off, it would simply reboot. EXTREMELY annoying. If it's a newer computer look at the power MANAGEMENT settings in Windows, as well as ACPI/power type settings in the CMOS setup screens.i know this problem... please change CMOS battery. then after you ll try..Quote from: senthilvalli on August 04, 2008, 02:41:03 AM

Solve : windows won't start up?

Answer»

It looks like there are several causes for your error - all of them impossible to fix, if you can't gain access to your machine.

Can you boot from the ME disk? If not, do you GET the same error?

Does the system have a floppy drive?

If you can't gain access to your machine, all that I can think of is to pull the hdd, put it into another machine and reformat it. Potentially dangerous to the other system if your hdd is infected, but, I think, OKAY if the only activity would be to format the bad drive. I would want confirmation from the forum malware experts, though, before I moved the drive to another system.thanks for your help. i'm getting more than a little frustrated with this computer. i'm giving up on it for today and i'll try again tomorrow. i'm still LOOKING for advice. can anyone help me?I can't believe the Mickey Mouse bad advice I'm seeing given out here.

So you have another computer you can get to, that's great. Because what you need to do is take the hard drive out of the computer that wont run, put it into the computer you are on now, and copy all of your files that you want to keep onto it. Dont worry about the adware infecting this computer, that's not very likely at all.

If you don't know how to do this, the best advice I can give you to try is to plug this harddrive into the same cable that the CD/DVD rom on the working computer is using. Otherwise, you need to learn about Master and Slave and jumpers on hard drives.

So your data is saved. Now to get an operating system back on your other computer. That part isnt so easy without an XP installation disc, and I have no experience with an upgrade disc so have no idea what to suggest there. Other than to get one any way you can. You can forget about the existing installation being fixed, it's not worth the time or trouble, a clean install is the best thing you can do.

It isn't likely the system is going to boot to an upgrade disc, try booting to the ME install disc and go from there. Quote from: jmjcari on July 27, 2008, 04:58:53 PM

Lan Zeird is a fake poster, see the spam link in his sig. His heroes are "his parents and Jesus", allegedly. His parents might not mind him spamming forums, but I bet Jesus would, if he existed that is.

I'm not an expert in this, but try to get an original CD/DVD with a Microsoft Windows *ANYTHING*.
From then on do the boot CD/DVD stuff and try to make a clean install of windows.
If your data is very important turn off your PC (Shut down,Power Switch on the back,Unplug cable) (There is no power switch if this is a laptop.) And open your computer box. From then dissconnect the harddrive and connect it to another PC to backup your program files & data.
Once done that, put the harddrive back into the Dell and plug in the cable back into the socket.
Put the CD/DVD back in and begin the install.
If that doesn't work, then I don't know... Maybe try something else...

I have managed to solve this problem! The issue is not with the firmware as it suggests but with the MEMORY!

1 - you do the memory test in BIOS and it shall show you the faulty dimm, if not,
2 - physically remove all RAM chips and try to BOOT with one at a time until the faulty one has been found.( if all are faulty use other chips )
3 - by now you should have the firmwares already so once you enter OS you may update the BIOS and ME easily! (I did not temper with the other 2 since I need not risk anything more! )

- YOURE WELCOME!They left 9 years ago....

Solve : Installation issues.?

Answer»

Hello I am currently I am a little new to the forum and I am not very good at using computers when it comes to reinstallation.

I am having a problem where after restoring the recovery partition using 7 HP Restore disks it will ALWAYS Bluescreen so I decided to use recovery options and I used second option to erase and recovery but I have no luck and I tried the only options and I always get a System Recovery prompt that asks me to insert disk #2 but then it sits there for an hour copying the programs from the disk and is stuck on 2 % and I thought what if I borrowed or some how got the original installation media of Windows XP Home Edition because the machine came with Windows XP Home Edition with no service packs (basically the first version of Windows XP) so I thought could I use the product key on the side of the computer and use it with another Windows XP disk with the same version to install Windows XP on it because I have no luck on using the restore disks and HP doesn't make restore disks anymore so it is possible to use a normal Windows XP Home Edition disk that installs the same version of Windows but use the product key on the side of the computer and will it pass activation? I have also tried several web pages but no luck on answering the question I have (webpages that have product key F.A.Q).As long as Microsoft doesnt have that key flagged as PIRATED or improperly used, it should activate if the same exact version of Windows XP between the Key and Disc. You might be required to activate by telephone in which there are groups of numbers in like A thru G 6 digits each and if Microsoft approves activation they give you numbers in return to enter to manually enter. This usually happens if the network adapter driver is missing or computer is offline.

The issue with Windows 7 stalling hanging at 2% could be a troubled hard drive. I had a system a ways back that got to a certain percentage and it was hun there but the HDD LED showed activity. Booting system with Linux I was able to scan the hard drives S.M.A.R.T info and see that the drive was damaged and upon installing a healthy hard drive it installed the OS with no troubles.Do you mean Windows XP or Windows 7 because what if they block my product key?Windows XP Install media with XP key from side of computer should work. They will only block it if its already blocked. If this key hasnt been misused it should work. If it was used to activate more than 1 computer or used to activate a computer too frequently then it could be flagged as no longer a valid key to which they will REQUEST for you to buy Windows.

The Windows 7 issue with it hung at 2% could be due to a failed hard drive when no ERROR is reported yet it doesnt make any progress further. Windows XP Product Keys that are affixed to Laptops or Desktop PCs cannot be used with Retail copies of Windows XP. It will not accept the key. (and vice versa, Retail keys cannot be used with OEM CDs)

The key might work with a Generic OEM Windows XP Disc (Generic being not specific to any company as those would typically be restore discs)On the side of the PC it doesn't say if it's retail or OEM does HP use OEM keys and not retail? What is the model number of the HP?
At one time HP had a install disk for Windows XP. that OEM version of XP did notask for the product key if you were doing the install on a HP machine that was licensed for use with Windows XP. If you HP mchine is one of those models, and if your can find the origianl HP OEM Intall for XP, then you can do a fresh install and not have to uhe product key.

I had a COUPLE of HP macines at one time and I still have the HP OEM CD. Sorry, I am going to keep it. I won;t let you have it. Howeverm you might check with a local computer club or maybe a dealer who has been in the PC service business for a number of years.

Look atthis:

That is not a HP, it is a Dell. He wants to sell it for about $21. Don't buy it, it does not have the drivers your need for the Hp.
Here is an Hp, but it is SP2

You might find some place that provides the SP3 download. I am not sure about that.
I believe taht CD withh work on a HP made from about 2004 through 2007. I think.

Well the PC I have is an HP 7935 it should of been up there when I typed out what the problem was and I really don't need the disk that you have if you thought I needed one because I was able to get a hand of a Windows XP Home Edition disk and that should work and before using the product key on the PC I tested the Windows XP install to see if it is a Retail or OEM. Thanks for the help. Good. Sounds like you have a plan.
Please let others know if the OEM product key will work on the CD you obtained.

One reference says taht machine shipped with Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition .
A product key for the home edition will not with with thMicrosoft Windows XP Home Edition ro version. An neither wil theMicrosoft Windows XP Home Edition ro key work on the hom. I am rostly abouthat.

Solve : USB Mouse shuts down after hibernating...how to fix??

Answer»

My PS/2 port is not working, so I bought a USB adapter for the mouse and keyboard. I have a Compaq with an asus motherboard PTDG01 LA. The mouse and keyboard share a USB port and EVERYTHING works great. Trouble is, WHENEVER the computer goes into hibernation, when Windows XP resumes, neither one works. I pull the usb connection out, then plug it back in, it starts working again. I think this is a BIOS setting or windows setting. Can I prevent it from shutting down this USB port as it goes into hibernation? Windows has a lot of problems with Hibernation.

Do you have to use Hibernation? Another alternative is Stand By. It is more reliable and does a pretty good JOB with staying on low power.also the fact that it is a ps2 mouse might cause the problem, you may want to invest in a usb optical mouse, you can GET them any where for about $20. if money is a problem, ask a friend if they have an extra usb mouse so you can test to see if that is the problem.

Solve : How to recover Windows XP using Recovery Console CD?

Answer»

Hi everyone.

I am trying to repair my old Window XP desktop. When I try to start it, I get this message :

Windows could not start because of an error in the software.
Please report this problem as :
load needed DLLs for kernel.
Please contact your support person to report this problem.

After searching the internet, I now understand that an essential file is corrupted. I created a bootable XP Recovery Console CD. I'm using to recover the system. I followed all the steps, but now I'm stuck and don't know what command I should use to recover the corrupted file. Please help me to do so.You could try this: When it asks for your CD put your recovery disk and see what happens.
•Click on Start > Run and type sfc /scannow then press ENTER (note the space between scf and /scannow)
*Let this run undisturbed until the window with the blue progress bar goes away
SFC - Which stands for System File Checker, RETRIEVES the correct version of the file from %Systemroot%\System32\Dllcache or the Windows installation source files, and then replaces the incorrect file.
I'm stuck with a black screen. I can't get to the Windows to click start. I made a XP recovery console CD. I tried to fix the corrupted file. But I'm still not SURE which file is corrupted. I followed the steps in this YouTube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SOgY48Ad4V8 but this didn't solve the problem.
I have two windows copies. One in the C drive and another in the D.
Please help me, I really need to get this PC working. Have you tried starting in Safe Mode?I can't start in Save Mode. all I got is a black screen. Now after all these attempts to fix it, and trying to install the Windows XP from a UBS, it is giving me a new error message, which is Hal.dll is missing or corrupt, and invalid boot.ini file message ALSO flash briefly when I start the system. You start in Safe Mode by repeatedly hitting F2 while the COMPUTER is booting. On my system it is the F8 key.

If he can not recovry his XP system, he will need to:
1. Boot up from a resue CD like Macrium Reflect .
2. Save documents and stttings to a DVD,
3. Install XP again, eraseding all data.
4. Restore documents and settings
5. Install other programs lost.

Solve : Where is there a good free portable FTP for XP??

Answer»

After trying about five differnt FTP clients that say 'can not run XP' or to that effect, I am asking what you thing I might use.

A portable FTP would be nice, I could also use it in Windows 7 and 10 without doing an install.
I tried an early version of Filezilla that was 3 years old and it told taht it could not run on my XP. But somebody said it would.

With Filezilla not working on XP, is this XP SP3 fully patched?

I used Filezilla years ago and it worked well, but it was short lived on my XP system. Instead I chose to switch to Linux for better security with my FTP box. I then used PuTTY and WinSCP to interact with it.

I ran into a recent nightmare with a XP system that i got for free that I decided to set up for offline gaming. But it just had its wimpy integrated intel graphivs so I added a better video card. So I needed a driver for my geforce 9800 GT that I added to it and so I selected the download for XP at nvidia's website. Next I found out that the driver needed a bunch of dependencies met before it would install & run such as:

Windows Imaging Component ( WIC_x86_enu ) needed to be downloaded and installed for XP

then .NET 2.0 installed

then Windows Installer 3.1 installed

then Service Pack 3 Redist installed ( in which Microsoft no longer offers SP3 and tells you to get Windows 10 and that XP is no longer supported and I had to get it from MajorGeeks for a file named WindowsXP-kb936929-sp3-x86-enu_c8147...... long chain of alpha numeric characters in file name here of 324MB in size.)

then .NET 3.5 installed

then the driver install for the video card finally started, but then warned that .NET 4.0 is not detected, but by which I was able to get it to install anyways

Got my XP gaming rig running and saved a copy of all the DRIVERS and dependencies for the Geforce 9800 GT video card, especially SP3 since Microsoft no longer offers SP3 for download which is pathetic that I had to get this from a questionable source such as MajorGeeks. Luckily no viruses detected and this box is offline use anyways so.

Additionally to mention, this system when trying to get all updates online, it failed to get security updates from Microsoft so they really have pulled the plug on it I guess. But manually installing the offline installer versions of updates seems to work.

Lastly.... there are a number of PROGRAMS out there that refuse to install to XP with their current versions that test what OS is running before allowing install and have a message that XP is no longer supported. I found ways around this if this is the case by expanding the contents of the software on a Windows 7 build and then copying the folder contents of the program in its expanded form to my XP system and the software ran fine when launching the EXE for the software on the system because only the installer or expander tested the OS version and the software itself didnt and was happy as a 32-bit application in a 32-bit environment. * Note: This only works if no registry entries are associated with the program. If it has hooks in the registry then I suppose you could manually CONSTRUCT the registry entry dependencies but it would probably be a great pain to have to manually construct the registry entries to support it.WinSCP is listed as compatible with Windows XP.Thanks to both of you.
Most of the time I get this XP machine to do almost anything. Almost. But recently many no longer want to support an old OS. So I know that I am just going to have to give it up.

It was HARD for me to give up Windows 2000. I had to study XP stuff for almost a year. Change is often hard.

Well, I got WinSCP to work. I used the portable version. Looks good. does the job. Nice program.

After all these years, little has changed with FTP. So why can't the FTP program just work with anything? Is it that hard to write code that works across several versions of Windows?

Anyway, I now have a Ftp that works , WinSCP portable.
Also, I found CureFTP also works.

Hi
Here is an old release that i made before with a vbscript called FTP Explorer.vbs
Description :
You are on a different computer than you, either with friends or in a cybercafe? You want to add, modify, delete files or folders on your FTP server? Solve : help my computer crashed?

Answer»

no thats the thing, the computer will not boot up into any mode. It just starts up and shows me the options screen where it doesnt matter WHETHER I choose safe modoe or any other option, because the computer shuts down and restarts to show me that same options screen again.Have you tried starting in safe mode with only the keyboard, mouse & monitor plugged in.

You do not need to be able to boot into Windows to run a hard disk diagnostic program.
i guess i dont understand what you mean. The only safe mode I know of is the option you get when you hit F8, which I believe requires Windows, how else do you get into safe mode?

And when you say only the keyboard, mouse and monitor, do you mean take off any other periperals like printer, webcam, etc? Yes that's what he means....
Yes I have just the keyboard, monitor, and mouse plugged in. The computer just displays the options screen whenever it boots. And then no matter which option I choose, the computer shuts down, reboots and goes back to that same screen. So I cant get it to go to safe mode the REGULAR way (I guess the windows way) Is there another way of getting it into safe mode so that I can do a system restore?
Thanks Patio.

just out of curiosity, how are you on the internet right now? do you have another computer... cause rather then go through all of this trouble is 100x easier to just run the broken hd as a slave, back up all of the files, and just reinstall all of windows.hOw

Youre right I am on a different computer right now, and I guess I can transfer the hard disk to the GOOD coimputer to back up the files. When I reinstall windows on the other computer, I would need to reinstall all the drivers again wont I?

There is no way that you know of that I can fix that computer and stop it from going to the options screen, is there? I dont know what I did other than downloadig and installing something on the computer right before it went haywire. My first thought was do a system restore, but I would need it to go to windows to do that right?

Solve : Can I make relative paths for shortcuts??

Answer»

First, let me explain what I want to do. In the process of moving from Windows XP up to Windows 10, I switch back and forth with the hope that in time I will get used to using Windows 10 It is going on two years now and I still get tuck in Windows 10. So I have to revert back to Windows XP until my head clears.

Well, I like to use shortcuts. Everywhere, not just on the desktop, but inside of directories. A number of my shortcuts refer to items in a partition I have named DATA. As the name would suggest, it is not a Windows system partition.

Now here is the problem for me. I want to use the same set of shortcuts on either XP, 7 or 10. I do not want to have three versions of each shortcut. When I reboot the computer to ANOTHER OS, the drive letters might change. Some do, some don't. The shortcuts often are to drive D:\ as you can see in the small PNG image attached.

So here is my question. Is there a way to have variable that would contain the rightr drive letter? And how would you use such a variable in the shortcut?
One shortcut, named AnyHow, has this:
Code: [Select] D:\ Kohn-II\AnyHow Le's say I put this in the right place:
Code: [Select]set MY_DATA = D:\
would I put this in the shortcut?
Code: [Select] %%MY_DATA%%Kohn-II\AnyHow
I have yet to try that. Would it work? Is there a better way?
Thanks for any help.

BTW: Is there an easy way to
- edit a bunch of shortcuts all at once?

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]The problem with using variables in a PATH for a shortcut would be that Windows expands the variable when you create the shortcut, not when you use it later on. This is just an idea - I have not tried it on a multiboot machine - you could try using the SUBST command. This allows you to assign a new, second drive letter to any drive. Suppose you have a drive which is D: in one OS, and E: in another, and F: in a third. You could pick a letter which none of them use - let's say Q: - and use SUBST in each OS to make that letter an alias to the shifting letter. After that a shortcut containing Q: at the start should work on each OS. The simplest way to do this might be to add a batch script to your user startup folder in each OS, something like this

Code: [Select]subst K: J:\

The first parameter is a drive letter plus colon, the second is a folder, which can be a root folder - NOTE the slash.

K: is the new drive letter and J:\ points to an existing folder, root or otherwise, on an existing drive letter. Henceforth K:\folder\file.ext will be treated the same as J:\folder\file.ext

I say henceforth - if you do the above at the command prompt (say you want to experiment and master the concept) it will only last until a reboot, which is why you would put it into a batch to run at startup, once you have got the letters straight.

Use subst /? at the prompt to see the help.

You could also edit the registry to get the same results, but I think the above is simpler.

Wikipedia article here

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SUBST

Code: [Select]C:\Users\Mike>subst /?
Associates a path with a drive letter.

SUBST [drive1: [drive2:]path]
SUBST drive1: /D

drive1: Specifies a virtual drive to which you want to assign a path.
[drive2:]path Specifies a physical drive and path you want to assign to
a virtual drive.
/D Deletes a substituted (virtual) drive.

Type SUBST with no parameters to display a list of current virtual drives.

As for editing links in bulk, here is a VBScript I found (that I have not tried yet). I suggest you try it out on copies first!

https://community.spiceworks.com/scripts/show/298-change-shortcut-lnk-target-paths-in-bulk

Salmon TROUT,
Thank you very much. It w ould have taken me a very long time to ever discover what you made clear. I forgot about the
Code: [Select]subst K: J:\concept. the subsk command. Ir has been around for along time.

How did you "forget" it ? ?It's an old one I had sitting in closet. I want to toss it just wanted to make sure all my personal stuff is deleted.
I guess I can just take the hard drive out and destroy it.
Thanks anyway.Too often PEOPLE come here expecting us to tell him how to defeat password protection in Windows. When the stop doing that because we have no way of knowing if the person really is the owner of the computer.
If your intention is to sell the computer to SOMEBODY else, you could just remove the hard drive and sell the computer without the hard drive. The Windows password is kept on the hard drive and not in some other place in the computerJust keep the HDD...

Solve : Do NOT buy Windows XP CD.?

Do not buy a Windows XP From eBay or anybody.
CD. Unless you know your REALLY have to have it.
You don't have to buy it if:
▐ You already have a valid COA key
▐ The PC already had a legal XP, but the HDD failed
▐ It is for a backup PC with COA sticker

Today I had to install XP again on my PC doe to a bad thing I did. So I looked on eBay for a replacement OEM CD only to find people are charging $20 . But I have a a key, and don't need to pay that price.

Then I saw something that got me to think. Looking G around, I see t the full ISO

Just Google:

No, you have. Google is not a policeman, and downloading "free" versions of well-known software is a pretty good way of joining a bot net or giving your confidential data to God knows who, or worse. You might even get the malware from visiting the sites. "I thought stealing cars was illegal but I found so many people who left theirs unlocked, so I guess the law has changed!"See Here...

Solve : Microsoft Redistributables x86 False issue?

Answer»

Cheers.
I've got a problem with the Microsoft Redistributable PROGRAM,it used to be 4 or 6 of them INSTALLED,but now it's like 30 of them installed, most of them followed by the word "False".
I THOUGHT of uninstalling the "False" programs, but I don't wanna do something wrong.
Also checked my computer for viruses,it's all clean.

Should I just remove all the "False" versions or do nothing at all?

Here's a screenshot of it : https://imgur.com/MpLHoJyI see no harm in uninstalling the older "false" copies and leaving the single non flase for each edition. You have 2008, 2010, 2012, and 2013 which you need to keep one instance of each of these which are the active ones otherwise software with DEPENDENCIES will break if say you removed all 2008, 2010, and 2012 and kept 2013 and the software needed 2008, 2010, or 2012 edition of the redist PACKAGE.

Solve : Get Modern Browsers for Windows XP. Update?

Answer» Here ya go!
Some good browsers no longer support Windows XP. Yet you can still find places where suitable versions of the popular browsers can be found.
Firefox is still said to be compatible with Windows XP. Yet even so, there may be some issues with the newest version. You can get older versions of Firefox from the Mozilla site. Try a version before 42, maybe even before 30 for some issues. My problem was that I could not print from newer versions of Firefox when using my Windows XP on by old Dell.
https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/

As for Internet Explorer, you just have to hunt to find a version that works with XP. Here is one:
http://filehippo.com/download_internet_explorer_xp/

Another hard one is Chrome. Google says no more Chrome for XP. Still, you can find an older version that works. They say you want version 49 or earlier
http://www.slimjet.com/chrome/google-chrome-old-version.php

SeaMonkey is not a problem. But it is SeaMonkey.
Opera is still alright as far as i know.
Of course, you can just give up on using XP!

What about Safari?
http://www.techspot.com/downloads/4184-safari-for-windows.html

Comments? Firefox 46 works fine on my XP system. I have my "era appropriate" Lexmark Z816 Printer connected to that system. If the browser can't print it is probably better to copy paste to a word document and print that way, which is better in general since you can print only specifically what you want. On an older system that is no longer receiving security updates it is likely a good idea to keep the browser as up to date as possible.On/off subject... You can always take your older computer built for XP such as a Pentium 4 with 1GB RAM and make a dual-boot system with Windows XP and Linux and use the Linux OS on the system for anything that you want as secure as can be with latest browser.

I rebuilt a eMachine the other day running a Pentium 4 HT 3.0Ghz with 1GB RAM to have dual-boot Windows XP Home SP3 & Linux Mint 17.3 (*32-bit). This way the computer is dual purpose for running older games on matched hardware as well as a 11 year old computer can still be used with secure newest browsers computing with Linux Mint 17.3 (32-bit). Additionally Flash support is better for Linux than XP these days as well as you can install WINE and run Windows based programs in Linux if needed.

I have Firefox 46 on this XP system and no problems. Right after activation I installed Firefox because XP and old IE has issues with many modern sites, and no problems as of yet with Firefox. In my Case Linux distributions have very poor support for the Radeon 9000 that is part of the AGP All-In-Wonder card I have in that system. The only desktop environment that works properly is XFCE; Same for my Thinkpad T41 with a which uses a mobile Radeon 7500 chipset.

That, and (again, in my case), I wanted both systems specifically to run previous Windows versions.

Linux is certainly a better choice if "refurbishing" a system for less savvy users, however, particularly if the choice is between Windows XP and Linux, but even generally. I did put Linux Mint on the PC my uncle gave my parents. (A TFX Case Inspiron) The Hard Drive was still good, but the integrated graphics were corrupted and crashed the system, and while initially testing, wouldn't you know it, the power supply failed. I replaced the Power supply (TFX) and got a cheap, low profile Geforce 210 after confirming that the graphics problems were not merely the result of the original failing PSU. It's been running fine as far as I'm aware.

It depends very strongly on the user though. An advanced Excel or Word user isn't going to feel at home in the any OSS Office software, which for the advanced user are merely shadows of Microsoft Office.

With regards to XP in particular, when setting up the two old style systems, I came across some very useful software.

ViStart Gives XP a Vista/7 style start menu, including an integrated search feature, though the search seems more limited it tends to work most of the time.

Everything Search I've actually put on all my systems now. It's a ridiculously fast search tool that is able to search entire drives based on filename in seconds. I've used it to great success when I've forgotten where I saved a file but remember a part of the filename. It indexes even large drives very, very quickly and the search results appear practically instantaneously, and I've been quite impressed with it. I think it works by searching the Master File Table via it's service component, rather than accessing the disk drive via conventional File APIs, but whatever it does it works great.

I also tend to install "Royale Remixed" as well as the Microsoft Zune Theme on my XP systems. (I use the Zune theme alongside the sounds from Royale Remixed, personally) However my copy was downloaded so long ago I don't know if there are any trustworthy downloads for it now.

Comments?

This is an old post but thoughtI would add my comments, if only as an update. I am currently using XP Pro, and the following browsers work on it:
Comodo Cromodo
Whitehat Aviator
SRWare Iron
SeaMonkey
The following browsers I had, but uninstalled, because each was obsessed with 'security certificates' (either completely refusing to go to the designated url, or forcing me to do 5 to 10 mouse clicks to add 'exception'):
QtNet
Firefox (cversions 21, 3.5, & 2.?)
PaleMoon
CyberDragon
Slimjet
If you can live with that irritation, then these work on XP also. Thanks for your addition.

This thread is scheduled to expire...
- when only two people still use Windows XP.

This is an issue with Windows XP because Windows XP has a base set of trusted certificates that are from more than a decade ago. It also doesn't have some added logic that was added to Vista and later whereby it checks for a Root certificate on Microsoft Update when it first encounters something signed with it.

You can update Windows XP's root certificates here: Update for Root Certificates for Windows XPIn the UK Govt department where I work, we are still using XP (until next March). They have rolled out Firefox Extended Support Release (Firefox ESR) I think the current version is 52.4.1 The v.52 ESR family is the last that will run on XP and Vista. It is, APPARENTLY, slated to receive its last security update on May 1, 2018.

Cool that you too have a Gov Job Salmon.

We have finally been phasing out our XP stuff where I am at going directly to Windows 10. There are still a few systems that are running XP because of issues getting 10 to work with legacy hardware and code. They have a bunch of stuff written 20+ years ago that needs to be brought forward to be compatible with Windows 10.

One machine I have for magazine and bubble mailer and large envelope automation is still running NT4 on a Pentium III 700Mhz with 384MB RAM on a private isolated network so its not at risk of getting hacked etc, but the problem they are running into now is that the machine was made in 1998 and the computers to run NT4 are getting scarce and they dont want to buy used systems on ebay etc and only want new hardware which to find new never used Pentium 3 systems isnt an easy find and if you do its likely being sold at a premium. We have a cluster of Dual Processor Athlon MP 2600+ 4U rack mount servers that have been getting worse as time passes with POST failures of mismatched CPU and freeze ups that have been running for about 14 years or so, and the only reason why these old servers aren't a problem is that the cluster works as a load balance for processing and so if you have 2 of these freeze up no problem then other 13 of them just take on a load of more FREQUENT requests for image results to be processed by OCR programs from bitmaps. We have been told that engineering is working on replacing the Pentium 3 systems running NT4 with new a newer Xeon CPU and Windows 10 as well as the clusters for the OCR is suppose to also get replaced with newer servers for OCR image results.

This one machine currently has:

2 Pentium III 700Mhz 384MB RAM systems running NT4
23 Systems running Windows XP of various 14 year old processor systems
2 Servers with Windows 2000 Server
2 Servers with Windows 2003 Server

The only systems not fault tolerant are the 2 Pentium III systems and one of the XP systems for the robotic automation controls. For the Pentium III systems I have had to mix and match guts to get a working system as they die and parts are scarce. I keep an eye out to what is thrown away and keep extra obsolete parts on hand such as a Pentium 4 2.4Ghz minitower was getting tossed out the one day which use to be a workstation and the 20-pin Power Supply, RAM, and Hard Drive has already been taken from that to keep old hardware running.

For the past year all workstations have been replaced with new Windows 10 machines and older Pentium 4 and Dual-Core systems that ran XP are being shipped out on pallets to be scrubbed and scrapped.

It will be nice when engineering sends us new systems to run the machinery, hopefully after all bugs worked out with the new code. When we had an IT equipment audit, in our server room the guy found a Dell Poweredge server up and running, but not connected to anything. He said it must have been like that for at least 7 years. The 23 workstations at the site are HP SFF machines, 1.8 GHz Core 2 Duo with 2 GB RAM, on a 100 Mbit Lan, running XP mainly for Office 2003. There are some custom apps, and they are all having to be checked for Windows 10 compatibility. I have been asked to spend a day in London, 120 miles away, to confirm that one of them works OK before W10 rollout in March 2018. A nice little trip because I will be on the clock from the time I leave home in the morning, to when I get home again, 12 hours time credit plus meals allowance. I can take the credit as time off later. We are getting new workstations, don't know what tthey are yet. My job is in financial governance, but because I am not scared of IT I get to do a lot of stuff that I really should not. For example, we are strictly not allowed to move a PC or printer from one desk to another. We have to get the Government's outsourced IT providers to make a chargeable technician visit to do it. 3 to 5 working days turnround time. Well, what do think we do? We were quoted 450 UK pounds to relocate a big laser printer from one end of the office to the other. I looked in the server room and found a box of ethernet cables, including one 30 ft long. The printer fitted on the trolley we use for bringing stuff from the store room. Thanks for sharing Salmon. My work has similar what you can and cant do etc. I'm an Electronics Technician that is suppose to have the IT Department send someone out to do stuff and if its simple like your situation etc, just do what you need to do. There is an IT guy that I try not to step on his toes. He seems ok with the minor stuff for me to do even though its not my job. I have even had to redirect wiring in punch panels which also isn't my job but the people here know that i have a DEGREE in IT and worked as a system admin before working here, as well as have dealt with telecommunications systems, so my boss allows me to get into the IT stuff to get stuff working etc when it would be a few days before someone would come to work on it or contracted out.

Whats really fun is when a contractor shows up to add something and they are like a deer in headlights when it comes to patch panel and punching in or redirecting a punch to a different Cat5e or Cat6 cable. I then am helping them do what they should know how to do to get the job done, but no extra pay for it unless I run into overtime. One guy I said how about I teach you how to wire this up and instructed the contractor who should have known how to do this how to do this as he was paid to do it and had no clue as well as didnt even have the punch tool, so i got out my own, but in leaving our site he now knew how to punch down 8 wires into the block for the patch panel and then add a patch cable to patch panel and switch.

The funny thing is that his boss was there overseeing this project and wanted to hire me on. I grinned and said I doubt you could afford my salary. He asked how much. I said my current salary is $68,700 plus overtime + very good benefits. The contractors boss got silent I think was really hoping he could head hunt me. But I might make more than him. When we get a new staff member we have to get them granted permissions to various folders on a network server. For example \\blabla\something\apple\bread\cake\dog\egg. The database she needs is in egg, but you have to make separate permission requests for something, apple, bread, cake, dog, and egg. We used to be able to just do the whole thing in one chargeable request, now it is six. Outsoourcing, don't you love it?

Outsourcing is bad news for workers and somehow works out good for investors and ROI figures. I was very fortunate to get my current Electronics Job in 2009 when most electronics jobs were outsourced and have left the USA where they can pay people a fraction of a US employee do do the same job and no benefits etc. I've been laid off a few times already from outsourcing.

However when you see waste in the fact that it could be done by yourself locally and they have all sorts of other people involved, I am not quite sure how that was a smart move; however if no one was on site that could do a job and it was cheaper to occasionally have a contractor come in vs having a salary employee on the books because they only need the equivalent of 8 hours a week of this skill, then I suppose that might make sense. But that contractor should be able to deal with it quickly and not take days.

Our issue with it taking days to get stuff taken care of at times to where I step in and just do it when able to without getting into hot water with my boss on board with what I am about to do, is say something broke on Friday at 5pm. That IT person works only Monday thru Friday. So the problem sits until Monday Morning, however the business itself runs 24/7/365 and so its cost cutting to only have people here weekdays, but not beneficial to the company when you need someone on an issue immediately. One example being our telephones all went down. I ended up going into the room that has all the servers and telecommunication equipment and found a battery backup had died. No one else here would have known to look for that and how to fix it. So I got the phone system back up and running after it had been down for about an hour, but a business having no phones for a few days at the mercy of a contractor or IT person who might not be able to get to it for a few days is almost unheard of, but could have been the situation if I didnt step in and troubleshoot it and get the power to the equipment MOVED over to a healthy battery backup from stock that was intended for machinery.

The other thing i have to be careful of is that if I do someone elses job and its a union employee that makes all sorts of problems to where they can grieve for pay for work I did and all that and my hand slapped after the pat on the back praise for getting the business back up and running etc. I always have my boss on board with touchy work in which someone might have a problem with me saving the day. Additionally you never know if your circumventing someones game trying to PROVE a point in that there is a need for a person to be in this position on site, because one employee who shouldnt be doing this work just happens to have the skill set to save the day so that the business doesnt feel the sting and fallout of 3 days of no telephones. Dave, you are right where I am on this... there is getting the job done, and on top of that, the office and organisation politics and having to cover your a$$ six ways, and senior management who take the credit for your good work and dump the blame on you for their mistakes, and hear your suggestions, turn them down, and then 1 hour later put them forward as their own ideas. tell me about it.

Solve : Cliqz browser for XP Pro??

Answer»

Anyone remember which was the LAST version that worked on XP?Where would you get an old version anyhow, I mean one that was safe? Cliqz says "For security reasons, we cannot provide older versions of Cliqz that are compatible with Windows XP/Vista." Other sources could be risky. However they do say there is an alternative, Firefox ESR with the Cliqz extension, add an ad-blocker and HTTPS Everywhere, and you’ll end up with a similar package as the Cliqz browser.

All I need to know is what version I'm looking for. Yes, I got the same EXACT (almost word for word) malarkey when I contacted the Cliqz homesite. I wrote back and told him if he really thought I would be willing to drop XP, just to try out his browser, then he was delusional. I handle my own SAFETY. Don't need no SUCKLING or burping from Microsoft, or some browser playing at being my Nanny or Nursemaid (that is why Firefox got kicked to the curb). Don't know if Cliqz will be any less obsessed with 'security certificates' til I give it a test drive. The Cliqz Browser is a fork of Firefox. The last version of Firefox for Windows XP was 52. The last version of the Cliqz Browser that was based on Firefox 52 looks to be 1.12.1 based on their release history on github, I'd suspect that is the last version that runs on XP.

It is unlikely that it will treat untrusted Certificates any differently than Firefox. Aside from being based on Firefox, it is a fork that is designed to strengthen security and privacy considerations; ignoring untrusted security certificates certainly goes against that goal.

Realistically, what you need to do is to update the installed root certificates on the system in question. I linked to a Windows XP HOTFIX in another thread which is also described here.

Browsers that support https aren't typically going to ignore a SSL certificate that it cannot verify. More recent browsers have certainly made it harder for people to ignore untrusted certificates, but that is because making it easy causes many users to become victims of their own hubris.

Solve : SSL not working in Windows XP?

Answer»

About two WEEKS ago, I think, it was alright. Now IE 8 8 is having some kind of problem. Not a problem is Firefox, I can just ignore it. But IE will not let me go naked. I mean barefoot.

I don't care about the SSL, this site I am using is a trusted site. Somewhere I read that is a new issue in Windows XP. What do I do?

This link has me confused.

I have an application that only works with IE. So, how do I tell IE that all is good, don't worry.

What can I do? Just use Firefox. Curious which app only works with IE...Quote from: patio on November 29, 2017, 08:34:44 AM

Solve : Flush DNS not working in Windows?

Answer»

When I start Firefox it shows me a group of small screen shots of places I have visited last time.
One of these I know is no longer on the Internet. i know, because it is one of my sites and I removed that page when I moved the site to another server.
So I do the DNS flush thing.
Quote

ipconfig /flushdns
But when I use Firefox to go to my site, it either shows the dead page or I GET an error message.

At this moment I am writing this in Ubuntu. I am using Firefox. Almost the same behavior. Except now Firefox does not shew the dead page nor does it give an error message. It just shows the right page on the site.

Is this a problem with Windows ? I do not want to do any ticker piddle with the registry. I will just leave it alone for now. But if I want to see my web site, I ha veto boot up another OS.

My question is: Does this kind of thing only happen to me?
Have others had issues with the flushDNS not working?
Is there an easy fix?

If Firefox isn't opening your current website you need to delete the old shortcut and re-create the new one....It does it even when using the URL directly in the address line. And even if I use a alternative URL such as spending www to the URL.
Maybe this is what I have:
https://w3guy.com/flush-delete-dns-cache-firefox-chrome/
Quote
Classical example: some time ago, I changed the domain name of this blog . I had to update the nameserver record of the new domain to point to my hosting.
Because the old DNS record of the new domain was cached in my browser, access to my blog with the new domain was denied; in fact, i could access my blog with my old domain even after removing the nameserver record all because the browser still have the record cached.
In this article, I will SHOW us how to clear / flush DNS cache in Firefox and Chrome.
Does that make sense?

EDIT: He says do it with an add-on. But the add-on is too old.
Also, I am no in Windows 10 and did the ipconfig /flushdns & Firefox still wants to go to the dead page that no longer is on the Internet.

I tricked Firefox into letting me get part of the new page. I don't now how. But my blog ha stabs and I can toggle back and forth with the tabs and I can get into the home page. The home page is the place taht is tghe normal start page for my blog. I am not sure how this happens. But the blog is written in PHP.

Anyway, Chrome leans how to do what is right. Firefox is a slow learner.

I am writing this edit in Windows 10 using Firefox.
Chrome now gets to my blog right off. Firefox still wants to use the dead page and then can not get the home page right. Bu I can click the heme page tab and it behaves. But I can quit Firefox, try again, and it will do the same mistakes again.

Firefox is still my preferred browser. But it makes me a little sad at times.
If I wait awhile, Firefox might fix itself. I hope. What "Dead pages" are no longer on the Internet? what are their URLs?

OK. Got it fixed.
The "dead page" is the page i removed from my site. And I did not transfer it to my new server. In was the index.html page for help9pm.com web site.
The site how has only a index.php that loads my Wordpress blog.
The issue was Firefox was using URL history instead of checking the name servers to see if the IP had changed.
I am sure the issue was really Firefox. Once Chrome had the right IP, it remembered. Firefox would not remember the right IP, but were depend on the history to find the IP.
I found also that in another seldom used user, Firefox had no problem,. So it was the WAY Firefox remembers history for a specific user.
This kind of thing would be very hard to duplicate. Fo an average user, like me.
Here are two screen shots using Windos XP.
From index.html tha was on old server.

Next what happens whne Firefox trys to getto the blog.

The page is most from tghe new server, which has index.php on the start page. Somehow, FGirefox cn not get tghe text right. But when I hit the home tab, the page becomes correct. You will not duplicate this. It is a local issue with Firefox.

The real issue is that Frefox just does not understand tgaht the stuff in the casche is not right. It must use the IP given by tghe current nameservers, the tghe IP used four days ago.

The sort of thning is very rare. One lwould expect taht sooner or later Firefox just might check and see if the namerservers have changed. I will check again on Friday, just to see if Firefox can figure it out.

It is not a OS issue. Firefox has itsown little secrect DNS cache you can not flush.
Its not a Firefox issue...Quote from: patio on January 09, 2018, 05:05:45 PM
Its not a Firefox issue...
How can I know? Is it maybe my Internet Service provider?
I find the behaviour both on Windows XP and WIndows 10 when using Fie\refox.
With Chlrome, I can overcome the issue and chrome remembers the right IP for the web page.

It is hard to reproduce this issue once it gets ficed. I fact, I can not reproduce the error with Chrome. Nor with the Ubuntu version of Firefox.
So, how doI find it is not afirefox issue?
Why can Firefox in Windos XP not get it right?

Infirefox, I can try an alternative link to tghe old server. I get this:

Quote
The IP address has changed.
The IP address for this domain may have changed recently. Check your DNS settings to verify that the domain is set up correctly. It may take 8-24 hours for DNS changes to propagate. It may be possible to restore access to this site by following these instructions for clearing your dns cache.

But I did clear the DNS using the method given for Widops XP. No change.

Both Chrome and Firefox have DNS prefetching and caching.

The TTL retrieved from the DNS server when Firefox originally retrieved the DNS lookup for the domain dictates how long it will prefer the cache information.

You can clear it as part of clearing the cache via History->Clear Recent History.

However both Firefox and Chrome appear to only maintain that cache in-memory while the browser is open.Thank you. I thought I allready did that.
Anyway, hereis an attachment of four brouswers. Thereee browsers gotit right. Bit FireFox still wantgs to read from tghe old server. (Whaich is in the UK, if that matters.)
A cheap with Network Toosl sows the domain ihas percodlatedinto tghe DNS lookup.
I noticed anissue with ssomething and moved thesiteto another server, as noted in the blog.
Somewhere I read tahtDNS propagation might takeupto 72 hours. However, would tgaht EXPLAINWHY tharee browsers git it right?

I think I may haveto delete firefox and install it again.
Attatmentbelow. (Color and size reduced to lesen load on the CH server.)

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]Fixed.
I removed Firefox and then installed the current Windows XP compatible version.
(Version 52.5.3 43-bit)
Same thing. Then I cleared all l history. That did it.

Thanks to all.

Solve : Connect XP to router via ethernet cable??

Answer»

My main computer runs Vista, and accesses the internet via broadband (btinternet, with BTHub5 router). This works fine.

I have an older computer, running XP, which used to have a dial-up connection to a now defunct ISP. Can I connect this XP machine to my router via an ethernet cable? I have fitted the cable between the XP machine and the router, but the machine is still not connected. Is there something I need to do with the software on the XP, or is it not possible to connect like this?

Thanks for any help.Yes...In XP you have to setup the connection from scratch in Control Panel...

Network Setup Wizard i believe it's called. Thanks, patio. I need a bit of help to do this, however.

I have tried the Network Setup Wizard, Create a new connection, Connect to the internet, Set up my connection manually, Connect using a broadband connection that requires a username and password, gave it my btinternet username and password, finish. It invites me to connect to this new connection but clicking "connect" shows "connecting through WAN miniport (PPPOE)", then "Error 678: the remote computer did not respond..."

Where am I going wrong? From the Mothership...Sadly, no luck. But thanks anyway.

MS advised:
> Step 1: Make sure that the network cable is connected

It was.

> Step 2: Make sure that the network adapter is enabled

It was.

> Step 3: Reset the modem

I assume "modem" means the router in my case. The router works fine with my Vista machine, and I'm not prepared to endanger that.

> Step 4: Uninstall and then reinstall the modem and the drivers by using Device Manager

I updated the driver for the network adapter.

> Step 5: Create a new DSL or cable connection

Did so (yet again).

> Step 6: Repair Winsock and TCP/IP

Did so.

> Step 7: TEMPORARILY uninstall third-party firewalls

No third-party firewalls.

> Step 8: Scan for and remove spyware and adware

No thanks. This computer hasn't had an internet connection or seen a floppy disk for years.

> Step 9: Clear the temporary Internet files

Did so.

> If the problem continues after you follow the steps in this article, try the following procedures. These procedures may help you determine the cause of the problem, or they may resolve the problem.

> Repair the network connection

Did so.

> Renew the IP address

Did so.

> Scan for viruses

No thanks. This computer hasn't had an internet connection or seen a floppy disk for years.

> Test in Safe Mode

Did so.

> If you are using Microsoft broadband hardware, you may have to install software and firmware updates.

I'm not.

End result — exactly the same as before. Unless anyone here has further ideas, I intend to ask the ISP what they think is happening.
Have you tried a new ethernet cable yet ? ?Solved it at last.

IE > Tools > Internet Options > Connections > LAN Settings > Proxy Server > Uncheck "Use a proxy server"

(LAN Settings > "Automatically detect settings" was off.)

Got the hint from installing FireFox, which EXPLICITLY reported "The proxy server is refusing connections" and showed in Tools > Options > Network > Connection Settings that it was set to "Use system proxy settings". Changing to "No proxy" fixed it — "Autodetect proxy settings for this network" might do as well — and then I did the same for IE.

Thanks to all who offered help.Glad to hear you are fixed up...

I'd run WHATEVER protection APPS you have on the XP unit...when proxy settings get changed by themselves it's usually a sign of INFECTION...

Solve : unable to update Win XP error 0x80072EFF?

Answer»

Hello everyone

I have been trying to Win XP and get an error 0x80072EFF. Search the web found some articles, but no luck. I can go to the MS website (microsoft.com) select update and recieve the error. I do not even get the DirectX option to click (select) on the top of the webpage. There r also some links in MS that I can not connect too. Surfing web is no problem.
I am running Win Xp SP3. Any ideas would be great.

Looked high and low on how to solve this problem. Saw many SUGGESTIONS but nothing worked. I installed and ran Hitman Pro and it did find some issues MalwareBytes did not, but it could not clean the RootKit issue.

I finally stumbled upon ComboFix and it did the trick...

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

I'm on a mission because I have so many times SEEN advice to install reg-cleaners, FIX-it tools and scan for malware.
A malware scan is a good idea to start with.

The general fix for this problem is to download the STANDALONE "Internet Explorer 8" Setup from Microsoft manually using a modern day OS(with up2date certificates and crypto) and COMPUTER and put it onto the hopefully virtualized XP, install it and most likely you can again run windows update.

Basically it's a certificate error, the frame where the error occures is https while the Windows-Update start page isnt.

If the error perists it is also good to downgrade the IExplorer security settings for activeX modules because the WindowsUpdate is ActiveX. When you are done reset the degradation and keep the wandering security risk off the internet forever.
He hasn't been back in 8 Years,,,

OK I'll read your recent links. i did contact the seller, all they did was refer me to the manufacturer contact us page for their, 'help files'. The brand is G Technology but i think the drive itself is WD (Western Digital).
Maybe in Windows 7 the ID of the drive maker can be found. You can try this took to see if it can ID the USB drive in Windows 7.
http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/System-Info/Everest-Home-Edition.shtml
Everest Home Edition Softpedia Pick image

Otherwise If you can OPEN the enclosure, you can see the label the drive maker.
My guess is you got a VARIANT of the ...
Western Digital easystore 4TB external hard drive.

Anyhow, here is a link to the Western Digital site.
https://support.wdc.com/downloads.aspx?lang=en
Look for: Acronis True Image WD Edition Software.
Hope that is of some help. Thanks EVERYONE. You're all amazing. I've decided to send them back. I just can't be asked to wade through tons of stuff that MAY work. I just want to be ABLE to plug a drive in and use it. So I ordered a 2tb drive instead, as most are saying that's the limit for XP. Thanks everyone again and God BLESS!

Just today an update came for my XP system. It says it is SP-3

Office XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) provides the latest updates to Microsoft Office XP. SP3 contains significant security enhancements, as well as stability and performance improvements. This service pack applies to any level of Office XP. It contains all updates INCLUDED in SP1 and SP2, in ADDITION to updates RELEASED after SP2. SP3 applies to the following Office XP products: Word 2002, Excel 2002, Outlook 2002, PowerPoint 2002, Access 2002, FrontPage 2002, PUBLISHER 2002, and Office XP Web Component

But my system already is SP-3. it was installed it from the Dell SP3 CD for my Dell computer. Is this a mistake Could it be a scam?
This has never happened before. it is referring to Office XP, not XP the OS.
Office XP was also called Office 2002.

Solve : Amazon prime, Siliverlight, Seamonkey and XP?

Answer»

Amazon said my Windows XP is unsupported.
I don't care, I just want to see a movie.
I found you can watch Amazon prime using Windows XP by:
opening the Amazon site with SeaMonkey 2.5 browser.
If you don't have SilverLight download the VERSION for Windows XP.
You may need to re START SeaMonkey and then you will activate it.

Works for me. No, I don't know shy.
I will not reply right-away. I am watching The Tick on Amazon. Thanks for sharing in case anyone is STILL stretching out XP as their main system.

My suggestion if anyone is using XP as their main system would be to install a dual-boot of a latest distro version of Linux so that you can have a secure environment as Linux as well as XP for software/program support for Windows and devices that dont have adequate Linux DRIVERS for them. I like the Linux Mint distro myself. ( If anyone runs with this suggestion, be sure to backup your important data to an external hard drive in case you mess up and wipe the drive clean, also dont do this unless you have the original Windows XP installation media to REINSTALL clean if you run into troubles. )

As far as viewing content like streaming videos through Linux though, I have had issues due to Adobe throwing in the towel on Flash Support for Linux. This pushed me away from Linux as a replacement to Windows as for lots of websites use flash and its annoying to get the pop up stating sorry you cant view this page or play this game until you install Adobe Flash Version whatever it is now or newer.

Linux is suggested to be installed along side Windows on a system with XP if anyone is using the computer for online banking or making purchases as for its more secure as its patched regularly so far less likely to get your credit card or bank info stolen etc.

Solve : Need SATA XP driver for Gateway SX 2110G?

Answer»

This is a request for help with finding a suitable set of drivers for an OLD Gateway and SX 2110 G desktop computer. I received this computer from a friend and it has Windows 10 64-bit installed and running well.
However, because of my age and some other problems, the computers more useful to me if it will run windows XP once in a while. I have a legal retail copy of windows XP home edition with the product key. So there is no question about the legality of what I am doing.
From a quick search, it appears that Gateway did not make XP drivers for this particular machine. At least that's what appears to be.
So here is my problem. The firmware on this machine does not appear to have a legacy mode that accommodates Windows XP. Therefore, I must have available a suitable driver to allow the windows XP installation program to READ and write the hard drive. I have already tried to install Windows XP from two DIFFERENT sources I have and both times it fails. The error code is not provide explicit information about what happened, but I'm quite sure it's because Windows XP cannot correctly read and write from a SATA drive. So the proper thing to do is to introduce a suitable 32-bit driver during the installation process. This is something I have never DONE, so I am asking the experts here to give me a hint about how I go about doing this.
This is not urgent. This is just something I would like to do if it is within reason and can be done with limited resources. One possibility would be to my an XP recovery disk from Gateway, but I don't even know if that's possible.
Any help you might give would be appreciated.
Again, the computer is a gateway SX 2110G and I wish to install a retail version of Windows XP home edition.
Thank you for your time and attention. Since the drivers aren't available from the manufacturer you would need to determine specifically what the devices are (EG the ACTUAL specific SATA controller chip) and then hope to find drivers for that specific controller chip.

However- even if you do find them, the only way to know they will work is to use them. Normally, you install storage drivers during setup by using F6 with an appropriately configured Floppy diskette. I'm sure then, that you see the problem- that computer doesn't have one, nor a way to plug one in. So the only way to load it up during install is to prepare a slipstreamed Windows XP install disc. That is described here (You would need different drivers from those listed, I Expect)Thanks.
Up to now I have never tried a slipstream. This will be my first.
The motherboard is a AMD type and I will search for the drivers. That motherboard and chip set might have been used on another model.

SP3 works fine.... Not sure why there's a need to post about this, but SP3 should continue to work just fine. I've installed it on a few computers and haven't encountered any problems.I installed SP3 two days ago and while it was installing, Spybot kept telling me that there was some changes being made. I kept clicking "disallow" and I expected that I would have trouble but everythings still seems to be working. Fingers crossed.Quote from: SuperDave on August 05, 2008, 07:59:43 PM

So, you told Spybot to disallow changes being made by the installation of SP3? Why would you do that? Wouldn't the opposite be the appropriate action?

I'm not sure what feature of Spybot you're talking about since I installed SP3 on my computer with Spybot S & D installed and got no MESSAGES from Spybot. Anyway, the best approach is to disable any spyware detection or virus detection protection software when installing new programs or major Windows updates, such as SP2 or SP3. Windows service packs install new version of many Windows system FILES, which antispyware programs are supposed to protect. By disallowing them, you end up with a partial service pack upgrade. I suggest repeating the SP3 install with S & D not running.

This is the first time I've installed updates where Spybot has responded. I disallowed them because there was no indication that the changes were caused by the download of SP3

And, what protects your computer while that download is taking place? That seems like a recipe for disaster. When I got my new laptop I went on-line to get some protection and in about 2 minutes I was infected which took almost 4 days to clean. Quote from: SuperDave on August 06, 2008, 02:41:22 PM

You would only disable Spybot while the service pack is actually installing. You can pull out the network CABLE if it makes you feel better. Download the service pack, disconnect your network cable, apply the pack, shut down, reconnect the network cable, restart.

You should disable TeaTimer while installing or uninstalling any software. Personally I would disable it PERMANENTLY! How to Disable Spybot's TeaTimer

I agree wholeheartedly with this!I disabled Teatimer, removed SP3 and re-installed SP3, restarted about 3 times and just when I was reading a thread I get this notice that SP3 is ready to be installed. What the heck is wrong with M$?

Solve : MS Outlook 2002?

Answer»

Hello,
I need advice with opening file atachment in ms outlook 2002.

When I open file attachment like *.jpg ... there is a message like this:
1. Open file attachment...
2. Save file attachment...
and there is a checkbox with the text: would you like ask again what to do with the file attachment?

Sorry for translation, I don't have english win. And if i check the checkbox, I EXPECT the message won't be displayed again. It works fine on admin account, but if i log on as a user WITHOUT admin rights the message 1. open ... 2. Save... will be displayed again next time.

So my question is how to figure out this PROBLEM. How do I set the outlook (in registry, in ini file ...) in the way, that message with the choice of action will be displayed only one (first) time.

Thanks

Solve : my windows xp machine lost connectivity to workgroup machines?

Answer»

I have a small workgroup comprised of 5 machines. 1 of my windows clients can't see any other of the 4 machines for what reason I don't know, nothing got changed from the night before when it worked properly. This machine still has internet connectivity so I know the connections are proper.

If anyone has any ideas what the problem could be It would be most appreciative for help.Try to describe the environment and the problem some more. How are the workstations getting their IP addresses - statically entered by you or is one of the machines a DHCP server? When you say that the malfunctioning PC can't "see" the others, does that mean that it users on it can't browse to other PCs' shares? Did you make any password changes? ip's are given through my linksys router as dhcp no modifications were made whatsoever from when they were working to now.

as for the computer not being able to 'see' the other computers, they actually cann't even browse to them to see any shares at all.try to do the following..
click start...Programs.....Accessories...Comm unication...Click Network Setup Wizard...
Rejoin your PC to your Existing Workgroup..with All Previous Information...
Browse your Network..
Is it Worked?just incase, check to confirm they are in the same workgroup.kuszmania9999:

Not So!!!
I have written about this a few times in CH.

I have 3 machines, each with its own workgroup, and they can see and access each other.
When you have Remote DeskTop, yes then the IP should be Static and must be the same WorkGroup.

-Just ensure all Pc's have Dynamic DHCP!!!
-Shut down all Pc's.
-Do a Cold Start on your Router, that means: unplug all cables including the Power Cord (important), and lets that sit for 10-20 Min's. This will (hopefully) clear the ARP Stack.
-Plug in all cords on the Router and restart the Pc's and Log on.
-Restart the Router, and let the Router allocate the IP's. Do Not Reset to Factory Setting. Watch the Log. It should take up to 20 Min's to have all Pc's on board.
-Ensure proper Access Rights for Folder and Users.

-This should do the trick, have done it many times!
I tryed this and it still came out with same effect, all internet capabilities but no LAN communication b/w computers o.OBearwithme,

I would attempt the CRUDE way to solve it.

On the affected PC:

First go Computer Management (local), Device Manager: to see if there are any Balloons, if so then fix them.
Check "Shared Folders" for any funnies.

If that does not help:
Go to Network Connections: - Network Tasks.
Work through the list checking the Connections and all their Tabs using:
"Start this Connections"
"Change Windows FIREWALL Setting"
"Change settings of Connections"

If that does not help:
DELETE all the Connections, then shut down and re-start.
Back to Network Connections: - Network Tasks.
Re-install the connections.

Good Luck.

Solve : NumLock Icon has moved?

Answer»

The computer that I use at work runs on Windows 98. Today it needed to start in Safe Mode. When it restarted and was working properly, the ICON for Num Lock, Caps Lock and Scroll Lock had moved form the bottom right hand corner to the centre of the screen and is always on top. This means that all the work I do (and the GAMES I PLAY) has the icon TRAY in the way. I would like to move it back to the corner. Can anyone help me, a novice to computer tinkering? The system tray is in the bottom-right corner and it typically doesn't have anything to do with NumLock, so I'm not entirely sure what you're referring to. Can you take a screenshot for us? Just press Print Screen (or PrntScrn) on the keyboard, open Pain, press Ctrl+V, save it as a JPG (on the Save As screen, select JPEG from the Save as type list), and ATTACH the file to your next post. If you need more detailed instructions feel free to ask.

Also...have you tried clicking on this icon tray and dragging it elsewhere?

Solve : How To Manually Update My XP??

Answer» NEW to this forum so bear with me, I'm just desperate for help! I BOUGHT a laptop off of craigslist today because I was in desperate need of one seeing as my desktop has died. Only thing is I had no idea XP was no longer supported with many things. Is there a WAY to update it? It's in pretty good shape, just old. I tried to update the biois on the dell website but apparently the battery doesn't hold a charge well and it keeps telling me to charge it (It's on the charger but still not working.)
The specs aren't so great from what I understand, Not fun going from my alienware to this, but I'm broke and can't afford anything else. Is there any hope for this to become a better machine?

Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Version 2002 Service pack 3
Intel(R) Celeron(R)M
Processor 1.40GHz
0.99GB of RAM

Thanks in advance!ouch - Celeron 1.4GHz with 1GB of memory - no MATTER how you slice that, it's going to be a slow PC.
so considering what you would have paid for it and your "I'm broke" statement you PROBABLY only have once choice - some sort of Linux distro.
personally, I can recommend elementaryOS (based on Ubuntu) but there are heaps and all are free.

sticking with an updated Windows OS will for one: cost you money and secondly: run like a dog with those system specs.

Solve : how to install xp from usb data stick?

Answer»

Right this might seem like an easy answer to some people here however im having muchos difficulties, my problem is i recently got an elonex webbook for myself which runs linux (UBUNTU) and as much as i hear GREAT things about it i hate the OS so i was wanting to change it to windows xp however i do not have a cd rom drive on the webbook nor access to an external one, heres a list of what i have.

1. 1 x elonex webbook 80 gig HARD drive 512 MB ram (linux)

2. 1 x 4gb usb data stick

3. 1 x windows xp service pack 3 CD.

Is there anyway of transferring everything off the cd onto the stick and booting from the stick (which is an option on webbook). i tried copying everything onto it and doing it that way but no luck is there anything i need to do, can anyone direct me to a tutorial, i keep getting very hard to do explanations involving floppy drives which i dont have either btw.

Any answers are much appreciated,

cheersforgot to mention i do have another laptop so i can modify the contents of the data stick as neededWell, first of all, we can't instruct you on installing XP in this manner because it is considered illegal and we don't help with such things.

Also, the CD you have won't put XP on your laptop, as it is only a Service Pack. You have to already have XP installed in order to use SP3. Unless this is an XP CD BUNDLED with SP3, but I'm not aware of these existing yet. I could be wrong, though.

I would suggest getting a CD-ROM drive for your laptop (you should be able to find one for $20). Or if you think that will be too complicated, you can get an external CD-ROM drive that you can connect to your laptop via USB. I don't know why you don't have CD-ROM, but it's a very important component. And, of course, you are going to need an actual Windows XP CD and not just the SP3 update.

Solve : disable fast shutdown?

Answer»

A while back I installed SBC DSL and my COMPUTER WOULD just retsart instead of shutting down even THOUGH shutdown had been clicked. Their tech showed me how to access a menu from the "RUN" BOX and there I checked the setting "disable fast shutdown"(??) and the computer started shutting down properly. I will need to access this menu again after I do a full recovery on my computer and reinstall the software. Since it took about 3 HOURS on the phone with sbc to finally connect me with someone who knew what they were doing, I think I can fix it myself. Only problem is I can't remember what to type in the "RUN" box to access that menu. Any suggestion would be much appreciated msconfigBINGO! Thanks Merlin

Solve : What kind of error is this??

Answer»

Look at this image please:

I have also made it an attachment in case my link bombs.

My Question.
What is this? I have never ever seen this before.
I am using Windows XP. MS said they no longer support XP, so why this message?

Anybody?

That's a normal Application crash. Thje crash dialog will normally say "We have created an error report that you can send to us. We will TREAT the report as confidential and anonymous", It has this altered text if the executable is signed by Microsoft.

otherwise, it's normal. Microsoft Feeds Synchronization (part of IE that is run through TASK scheduler to update RSS feeds) crashed.

Surely, you've seen a program crash before?

Or is your confusion because the message asks you to "tell microsoft about this problem" or that it encourages you to send an error report?

That's like running a program a person wrote that says "drop me a line to let me KNOW what you think" only to learn that the person has died, and then wondering "well then why does the program tell me to send them an E-mail?"

Windows XP fell out of support, but the OS doesn't know that. They aren't going to release a final update that scours the product for anything that implies it is still supported and remove it. It's up the user to not be a yogurt.
