Solve : Outlook Express Spellcheck?

Answer»

Spellcheck on Outlook Express is set to French, and when I go to Tools and Spelling to change it, the only OPTION it offers is French. It's useless to me this way. Someone please HELP!Is your spell check in OE coming from an installation of Microsoft Office? If so, what version of Office?2007OE users who have a pre-2007 version of MS Office installed ATTAINED English spell check capability in OE from Office. That is not TRUE with Office 2007. See http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/932974 for more info.

I think you'll need to GET a third-party spell checker such as Spell Checker for OE 2.1.

Solve : NEED HELP 911 PLEASE?

Answer»

ok so here is a break down of what I am facing. I have a hp laptop. It holds a ton of pics and videos that can never be replaced. They are very dear to me and I will be devestated if i lose them please help.....

Ok so did I mention I was computer illiterate. I don't know any computer terms or jargon so feel free to reply to me like talking to a child because in the pc world that is my equivalent and it would be a lot easier.

Problem:
turn on and it goes to black screen ASKING strt windows normally safe mode etc etc last known good config.

no matter which one i choose it flashes BLUE screen and says unmountable BOOT volume.

I hit esc and go to bios setup and run a hard drive self test it fails with #1-07.

I have no xp disc and dont know what else to do. I know that i will probably need a professional but i guess what i am asking is for some hope. am i screwed or can this stuff be found and backed up. I purchased a external drive to back it up if i could just GET to it. I dont know what i would do if it is gone......

First of all, if hard drive test reports any errors, stop using the computer. The more you try, the less chances for recovering your data (if).
If you have a friend, who knows little bit more about computers, you can remove the hard drive, slave it in another, working computer, and try to recover your data. You could have someone else put it in their PC and try to recover the files off of it. That is the best option. You'll need one of these:

2.5" to IDE connector...about 8 bucks at any PC store. It enables you to connect the laptop drive to any desktop machine.

Windows does NOT need to be working on the laptop to get your data so as Broni STATED above stop trying to fix it until your data is safe.

Solve : Dual Core - can I use one core for one application and the other for the rest??

Answer»

Hi, this is my second post. I have a Pentium D 2.66 Dual Core processor w 2 GB RAM running WINDOWS XP, and I am wondering if it is possible to "isolate" one core to process an audio application i use (that does not support dual core technology) and all of it's "threads" or "processes" or whatever they MAY be called, and use the other core to process Windows and all other apps?

My goal is to optimize my PC to make the best use of the two cores for this single audio application. The Program is called Pro Tools LE, and is version 6.4 (if that matters) and it is one of the last versions of Pro Tools that doesn't support dual core. So in this sense, I do not need my computer to "take advantage" of the dual core technology when I am not using Pro Tools LE. Does this make sense? In other words, if it is possible, I would be okay with windows and all others applications/processes besides pro tools LE running off of only one of the two cores.

I am a novice still when it comes to understanding computers and their abilities, so i apologize if this has been addressed or if this is considered common knowledge! I did search both the FORUMS here and the web for an answer, and EITHER I don't really know the right keywords or this is a rare circumstance. Thank you in advance for any insight you can offer me! to chance what core a thing is using go to task manager and go to the processes tab and locate the process (an easy WAY to do this is go to the applications tab, right click on the application, and hit go to process) Then right click on the process and hit set affinitiy. Change the core its using there

Solve : Email Link Problems?

Answer»
I use Incredimail for the most part ALONG with Eudora 7 occasionally. Recently, I find that in emails on EITHER program, I am stalled when I click on an icon link to another site. Usually, I can't get the URL from the icon so unless the email has cited the actual URL - forget it and I do!

A supplementary problem. In light of the above I have deleted or uninstalled each of the above [separately of course], then downloaded new versions and installed them. Uh oh - same old, same old. All the same mail in and out, same deleted emails etc. In both CASES, I have done this at least twice with the same result[or lack of]. I have done a search here, but can't seem to find anyone with a similar problem. Any IDEAS would certainly be appreciated.

Solve : retrieve files overwritten on cd??

Answer»

Sorry if this has been covered. I searched but couldn't find anything on it.
System- Windows XP home edition SERVICE pack 3
I was saving some pictures to a CD and inadvertently copied new pics to the CD with the same file names as pics that were already there. (When windows asks you twice whenever you want to do something, why don't they ask you twice when you use the same file name?) Now I can't access the original pics which were erased from the camera. Is there any way to retrieve the ORIGINALS?Nope.
Gone.Come on, Patio, let 'im down easy!

It is unfortunate but true that due to the nature of the magnetic media of existing hard drives, there are many examples (in both real world and fiction) of being ABLE to retrieve data from hard drives. Due to the medium of the laser inscribed data of a CD / OPTICAL drive, there is no way to retrieve old data once it has been overwritten by new data. But it's not magnetic media...it wasn't clear if they were overwritten on a CD and/or they were overwritten on the camera's flash media as he stated both...
That's why i let him down easy.

If it was a HDD at least he'd have a small prayer.

Solve : Lost all OUTLOOK files after a system restore FIXED!?

Answer»

Like the title says. I did a system restore and all of my old emails and contacts are gone.

I am not computer SAVVY and think I made a mistake SOMEWHERE.

When it did the system restore I made a new "profile" so when I go into my "c" drive, "documents and settings" there are two administrator accounts;

hp_administrator and;
hp_administratorDAVISCOMPUTER (new one)

My computer automatically loads me into the NEW one I created. I tried to log off then log back into the old account but it isn't an option.

When I started my internet I had also lost all of my favorites. I found the favorites in the old "hp_administrator" file and transfered them over so I have those back.

However I can not find my old outlook emails and contacts. where can I find these or what do i have to do?

I also had to contact my internet provider to set up the outlook account again. It is for the same email address but I may have added a different "contact name" or something if that will make any difference

This is very frustrating.

BTW I did a system restore becasue my media center kept crashing and I thought that would fix it--- IT DIDN'T but I will try to fix that uissue later.

Thanks
ShawnSo I TAKE it I am pooched

right? When you do a system restore, it puts your system back to the way it was when the system was last saved. If that last restore point was before your email contacts were added, then they're gone.
But why are all my favorites etc saved?

My whole email account was wiped out. The fact that my favorites were saved makes me think the emails are too, I just don't know where to look to find them.

Shawnwondering if you could undo the system restore? system restore didn't help your crashing and you can't find your email files. The problem is I had to sreat a new account

hp_administratorDAVISCOMPUTER

my old one was hp_administrator

When I look in my current outlook "maintenance" to where my files are held they are in

C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator.DAVISCOMPUTER\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{D7262387-AED1-4256-8BFF-22265B0B5C06}\Microsoft\Outlook Express

Problem is I know my "old" ones are in a FOLDER WITHOUT the DAVISCOMPUTER part. But I can't find them.

There are 5 "users" in my "documents and settings" I just want to find the ones in my old file aaarrrrgggg!!They will be somewhere here:

Quote

C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator.\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{D7262387-AED1-4256-8BFF-22265B0B5C06}\Microsoft\Outlook Express
FIXED

I went into "C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{D7262387-AED1-4256-8BFF-22265B0B5C06}\Microsoft\Outlook Express"

and they were there.

I cut and pasted to the "new" account. Only problem is that I replaced the new folders with the old ones therefore I lost the 10 or so emails that were new

No big deal at least I got back my important ones.

Solve : Windows XP will only boot in safe mode?

Answer»

I know a little about computers, but I am stuck on this. I have an old Dell Dimension 8400 stock everything. I was having a PROBLEM such that whenever i would power on, the screen remained black and the fan RAMPED up extremely high requiring me to hold the power button to turn it off. I put FRESH thermal compound b/w the CPU and the heatsink and that doesn't seem to be a problem anymore. However, before I replaced the thermal compound, I tried booting up the computer and I got as far as my desktop screen popping up and my AV software coming up before it FROZE. I have tried repeatedly before and after to reboot and it freezes every time ( a few times it got past the av and still froze). I can boot it up in safe mode without freezing. Could I have possibly deleted some drivers or necessary files for windows? Or does this sound like a hardware problem? THANKS for the help.

True or False?

Answers please?

Actually I have installed Windows XP Pro on a Vista laptop for my brother-in-law. First you need to partition the hard drive to create at least a 40 gig spare partition as drive D: or whatever letter you can assign to it.

First find the drivers for your Laptop, if you cannot find them or your OEM does not provide them you can DOWNLOAD XP driver packs:

http://driverpacks.net/DriverPacks/

They should cover everything except for HD AUDIO sound driver support. Last I checked they didn't, but can be installed to driver CDR or DVDR disks. Grab the nearest HD Audio XP drivers to your audio card as possible and force install those drivers and hope they work. If not you might go without audio, but still run XP.

Like this HP HD Audio driver had to be forced:
http://forums11.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/bizsupport/questionanswer.do?threadId=1199024

After installing Windows XP Pro your boot sector will only boot XP as the Vista info was lost, you can recover it using Vista Boot:

http://www.vistabootpro.org/

I am running a Compaq laptop very simular with Windows XP Pro on it, I removed Vista Home Premium completely but kept the recovery partition to put it back on later.

OEM versions of XP Pro or XP Home can be bought from Pricewatch.com http://www.pricewatch.com/
Prices may vary, and may also require a hardware purchase to qualify for XP OEM sales.

If you swim *censored* with sharks, if one comes after you, just punch the shark on the nose until it goes away. If you panic and make a lot of movements you will only attract sharks towards yourself, best to just lie still and float and hope the sharks swim away from you.

I would make a joke COMPARING sharks to lawyers, but the sharks would sue me for defamation and libel, and the lawyers would gladly represent the sharks.

Why in the world would you want to swim naked with sharks

Solve : Problems installing OS?

I now have the computer repaired. I slaved the old HD to one of my computers and I started downloading the data I wanted to recover to a memory stick. I filled the stick and when I went back to get the rest of the data I couldn't access the drive. I can see the drive in Device MANAGER and in Disk MANAGEMENT but I can't see it in My Computer or in Windows EXPLORER. Is there something I'm not doing correctly?I really dont know. Try going to start>run type in c:You may need to take OWNERSHIP of it again since you maxxed out the thumd drive...this will sometimes kick in the file PROTECTION of Windows.

Solve : Computer Died When I removed EZ Armor...?

Answer»

Hi,

Please excuse noobishness and lack of real knowledge... I have a problem with my computer not booting at all. As my EZ Armor antivirus has now expired on my 3 year old Fujitsu-Seimens (3.6ghz, 1GB RAM, xp - latest updates and service packs etc) I decided I would remove it and replace it with something a little more, well, free. My plan was to download Avira AV as this works fine on my old laptop. So I first removed EZ Armor using the add and remove programmes list on the Control Panel as I know that having two different AV programs can cause PROBLEMS by them conflicting with one another. A message came up saying I needed to restart the machine for the changes to take effect. When I did this the machine shut down and when it came to boot up again the following message came up:

REBOOT and Select proper Boot device
Or insert Boot Media in selected boot device and press a key_

Since then every time I try to boot it up I get the same message appearing – its after the first system screen (the one which says hit Del to run setup) but before Windows makes an appearance. This means I can get in to play with the Bios settings (not that I would really know what I was doing). I didn't do anything or go online between removing EZ Armor and re-starting - I restarted immediately. Does anyone know what the problem is?

Is it likely to have been caused by removing EZ Armor?
Do I just need to stick in the system recovery CD and will this sort me out or do I need to something in the Bios settings?
If I do manage to USE the system recovery CD, will it mean I lose files on the computer?

Any advice would be appreciated, thanks.
Dload the Recovery Console .ISO Here

Use your burning program to create a bootable CD.
Insert the CD power down and re-boot.
Hit R at the first prompt.
This will load the RC and take you to a DOS-looking command prompt screen.
When it finishes loading at the prompt type in fixboot and hit Enter.
Remove the CD and re-boot.

If the above doesn't do the trick repeat the instructions except this time type in fixmbr and hit Enter.
Remove the CD and re-boot.

You can't always use a laptop Restore CD to do this as you risk wiping your drive and taking the machine back to Day One status...that's why this method is being suggested.
Good LuckThanks - in the end it turned out to be the simplest solution (the first one which I tried last night having done some RESEARCH and was trying more in hope than expectation). I just went into the Bios and changed the boot disk order and it started fine. Don't know what caused the boot disk order to change, assume it must have been something to do with removing EZ Armor, or may just have been coincidence. Anyway, chuffed that for once in my life the first fix I tried was a successful one...

Solve : How do I adjust an xp PC to give a longer time before locking out??

Answer»

Hi,
in Windows, after a time of inactivity, a logged on userid will be automatically locked. The user will have to reopen the userid (e.g. by pressing control, alt and DELETE) and reenter any password they may have.

On some of our PCs there is a longer time of inactivity required before the lockout than there is on others.

How do I change this time period?

ThanksI think I may have an answer to my own question.

There is a security option called Amount of idle time required before disconnecting session in Windows 2000 but in xp it seems to be called Microsoft network server: Amount of idle time required before suspending session. Beats me why it comes under Microsoft network server, but there you go!

I think this controls the automatic lockout FUNCTION I described earlier.

To get to it, select: -

Start/Run

Type MMC and hit enter or click OK

In the resulting Microsoft management console, select: -

Console/ Add/Remove Snap-in.

Then click Add

In the Add Standalone Snap-in window select Group Policy and click Add.

You will be asked what Group Policy Object to select. This should default to Local Computer. Click Finish.

In the Add Standalone snap-in screen click close.

Then in the Add/Remove Snap-in screen click OK

In the Console, you should see Local Computer Policy. Expand this by clicking on the + sign next to it.

Expand Computer Configuration in the same way.

Expand Windows SETTINGS in the same way.

Expand Security Settings in the same way.

Expand Local Policies again in the same way (Yawn!!!!)

Click on Security Options.

There should appear a list of security options in the right hand pane of the Console. Find

Amount of idle time required before disconnecting session or
Microsoft network server: Amount of idle time required before suspending session

and double-click on it.

A Local Security Policy Settings window should pop up.

Adjust the time to the appropriate time out value and click OK.

This should solve the problem.

Thanks
Right click on the desk top
Click "Properties"
Click "Screen Saver" Tab

There should be a box with a check mark in it and the words "On resume, Password protect"

If so
Change the amount of time before the screen saver comes on.I know what you mean but there is no screensaver ENABLED on the pc in question.

This timeout facility is a windows security setting. It's built into the Windows xp operating system and, like the screensaver password, is designed to stop users from walking away from their desks and leaving the pc unlocked for more than a short while.

Windows has a range of security controls from pasword related settings to whether or not a user has to use CTRL+ALT+DEL to login and many other things.

This automatic timeout function is but one of them. I see from the PCs about me that it defaults to 15 minutes.I don't think mroilfield really understood your original question. I imagine the policy you had set would automatically perform the lock function, which a person can do manually via Ctrl+Alt+Delete "Lock Computer"?

THANK you for returning with such a well explained solution, as well! Too often we have people ask a question, they solve it themselves, and simply post "fixed it k thx"

Anybody with a similar issue as yourself will now know exactly what to do! Again- Great explanation!

EDIT: I read my post again- and it sounded kind of sarcastic. It's not, just to clarify that. Thanks,
I didn't read it as sarcastic at all.

Cheers

First you install Windows 98SE and get it running. Then you decide if it is wuoth installing Windows XP. Most likely your old Windows 98 CD is just lying AROUND, so it would make sense to use it, you paid for it. But as for XP, the retail value is $149 and the OEM Disc is about $79. So, why even wast a COA on an old computer?

Here on this forum we do do ENDORSE the idea of 'hacking' XP so that it will install on just any computer. Microsoft has a reasonable plan where you can get a decent refurbished old PC with a legal load of Windows XP sp2 on it for less the the cost of the retail XP. I am using one now. $132 with shipping. 1GB RAM P4 at 2.8 GHZ, 40GB drive. Had to add my own mouse, keyboard and monitor and a wireless network card.Works great, but does not make coffee. Solve : Microsoft Explorer disappeared, no icons or start menu?

Answer»

Hi. I have a Windows XP computer, that's about all I can tell you about it. I'm not very computer savvy. Yesterday when I signed onto my computer, all of my icons and my start menu were missing. No, it's not on auto-hide. I can use task manager to open programs still, and everything is working FINE other than the fact all I can see on my desktop is my background when no programs are going. Yesterday I searched a little online about this problem, and figured out what it is. Something completely wiped my explorer.exe from my computer. It's no longer RUNNING under processes, and when I try to use run to open it, it says it doesn't exist. Anyway I can fix this without a recovery disk? I moved a few weeks ago and LOST a big box of my stuff, which it was in.See if you can borrow an XP CD...the version and installed Service Packs need to match...in other words if you have XPPro with SP2 installed that is the CD you need.

Then go to Start/Run and TYPE in sfc /scannow and hit Enter. Windows will now replace any missing/damaged system files.
Good LUCK.

I agree with this...
Let's do ALL the FREE stuff first...

1) Borrow a PSU of the same or GREATER wattage for 2 days and swap it in there.

2) Remove the 512 stick and DLoad and RUN MemTest as i suggested earlier.

3)DLoad the FREE diagnostics from the hard drive manuf. site. Use it to create a bootable CD. Run the LONG test.

4) Borrow a KNOWN good CD/DVD drive and also swap it in there. It does not need drivers.

5) Run defrag, chkdsk /f and A/V scan once you have gotten a clean bill of health on the hard drive.

6) Re-install your MBoard drivers.

Post back with any progress after taking these steps. You should do ALL of them for a proper diagnosis.

Solve : Unable to install windows/hard drive error?

Answer»

Hello all,

New here. I apologize if this is the wrong CATEGORY to post in. I will ask my question first and then give my problem.

Anyone have any ideas on what I can do to resolve my inability to read my system disk/install XP on it? And for the record, I have had the same problem with 2 hard drives, as he first one is "dying" or sick or whatever. so I tried installing XP on the second and same problems came up. Now for the details...

In a nutshell, I cannot install windows XP back onto my computer. I have a computer I have used for audio recording for well over a year now that has a 40 GB HD for programs/Windows, and a secondary 160 GB HD for data and audio storage.

A few days ago I started getting an error and a "blue screen" with some error information on it (I unfortunately did not write down or capture this info.) after rebooting my computer. Since that first time, it seems to have gotten worse. It did the "blue screen" a few times on subsequent reboots (both cold and warm booting) and then I attempted to reinstall windows. The install went well, computer seemed fine, etc. I was able to get into Windows after the fresh install of XP. Since that worked okay, I ran chkdsk to check the system drive for any issues. The first clue that something was wrong was that it almost finished the chkdsk (seemed to get to 100% complete) but then stated something like"windows cannot complete chkdsk on this drive". So i rebooted the computer again and now it won't even finish loading up and gives one of two or three errors that all lead to "disk read error, press control+alt+delete to restart". So i restart, and it happens again. I then decided to reinstall windows again. In reinstalling, I deleted the current partition on my system drive so I could format and creat a new partition. But it would not even get through the formatting process (trying quick format/NTFS). It will get towards the end of the formatting and then another "disk error, press enter to try again or F3 to quit". It also states thaty the drive may be damaged. I tried reinstalling one last time, went through BIOS and defaulted everything, and same thing.

All this to me seemed to point to a faulty or dying hard drive. So I took an extra drive I had and was going to use that for my system drive. Turned off the PC, installed the new drive/jumber settings, and then turned on the computer with the Win XP install CD and started the install process on the replacement drive. And PRESTO! Same problem! I get identical errors when trying to install windows on this replacement drive. From that I am now wonderiong what the diagnosis might be. Cable went bad maybe? Or could it be the "HD controller?" I am unsure how the HD controller works, but read something that made it sound like maybe the controller is fried.

I have checked cables, all are secure. I have also browsed the web for answers, but there are so many out there I don't know where to begin! I can give a basic overview of my system, but I'm at work and don't have the spces with me. I have had this computer long enough to kow it was pretty stable for awhile and have just recently had these problems arise. Any help is GREATLY APPRECIATED! Thanks in advance.

Have you tried using DIAGNOSTIC software available from the hard drives' manufacturer?Hi Glitch, thanks for the reply.

I have not tried the diagnostic tools other than what Windows provides (scandisk/chkdsk, recovery console). So guess this is a good next step (This is all very new to me!) Would these diagnostic programs run without windows working? I assume they would, but I really don't know. If there are choices, I would need one that could boot from a CD as I do not have a floppy drive.

I was given some advise that it may be my master boot record?!? problem and to try a low level format of the system drive . Do you feel this is worth trying? I am not worried about losing data as this is an application drive only and my "valuable data" is on a separate drive. I was also told that recovery console (I tried using to some degree with no success) may be able to repair the MBR so try that before low level formatting.

I am fortunate enough where I work that I went to our IT dept and they had 3 extra hard drives they are letting me do trials on, so I will also attempt to utilize one of these. My only concern here is that this same issue has happened on two separate hard drives of mine already and I feel very confident that the second drive I tried installing on is a good drive. Could have been a fluke though I guess....

Are there any other possible areas to LOOK into that are somewhat common and mirror some of what I am dealing with? For example, I am going to try replacing the ribbon cables as well, though I've checked all cable connections and they are all snug and show no physical signs of damage. Also I was told in general terms that it may be the motherboard or HD Controller.

One last note that may or may not be IMPORTANT, During the previous installation attempts of XP, both my system and secondary drives are "located", so I know windows/my pc can recognize that the drives are there.

I will try the diagnostic tools, but I may PM you for help in figuring out how to locate and use the tools. Just go to the manufacturer's website and download the bootable version of the diagnostic software on cd.

Also...make sure you have the drives jumpered correctly. Try one drive at a time...

It's s good idea to make sure you have the correct ribbon cable, as well.

I'd perform a low-level format...much better than just a regular format. However, if the drive(s) are, in fact, defective...this is not needed.

Unfortunately, I don't provide support via PM...sort of negates the forum...if you know what I mean...this way all can benefit from the answers.Well, I've got the diagnostic tools for my drives, but I haven't used them yet. And yet, still a happy ending to all of this...

I spoke with an IT rep at my work, he gave me a new ribbon cable to try, and then he reached into a box and took out 3 used hard drives for me to test out over the WEEKEND. So i got home and thought I'd try one more hard drive before i got into any lengthy diagnostic testing. I set the jumper, plugged the drive in, started up the pc and went into bios. Bios didn't even recognize this third drive i tried! So i laughed it off and decided since i had another 2 drives i could try, i might as well. put in the 4th and ......PRESTO! I'm back up and running. Got windows installed, currently optimizing and tweaking a little to remove the services i have no need for.

I use this pc I'm referring to for digital audio recording, and this has taught me that the old saying "you don't know what you're missing 'til it's gone" is more relevant today than ever! In today's digital age, you can lose years worth of "valuable data" in an instant.

This has definitely taught me patience! So, thank you Glitch. I have a new found respect for you and others like you who can actually find their way the broad realm of computers and can understand what's "going on under the hood" so to speak. Still scary stuff to me, LOL! But I now have a new tool I can use if this happens again.

My issue has been resolved. You're welcome...

Glad to hear you're out of the woods...

Solve : XP SP3 Unbootable After Creating New Partitions?

Answer»

Greetings

My XP Install (from a disc with unknown SOURCE) becomes unbootable i.e. reaches the XP splash screen and reboots when I create a partition. I create the PARTITIONS using GParted in Ubuntu Linux. All advices, comments are welcome.

Thanks in advance.
Ralph
What do you mean your disc is from an unknown source?

And why are you using Gparted to create the partitions? Why not use Windows setup?Greetings

Thanks for reply.

Booting with that disc just formats the hard-drive, creates a partition of 60.xx MB (cant be RESIZED) and the rest space becomes unusable since creating a partition makes the OS unbootable.

I DONT have another windows disc.

RalphRalph, is this a burned or a pressed disk you are using?
Like I said, what do you mean your disc is from an unknown source? Is it a genuine Windows CD (shiny with holograms on the surface or a manufacturer supplied restoration disc)?Hello

It is a copied disc, I guess. I don't remember getting it but I have TWO brothers and cant ask them now.

RalphQuote from: Ralph Spencer on March 07, 2009, 03:38:31 AM

Hello

It is a copied disc, I guess.

Well, the only advice you're going to get from now on is buy a legal Windows disc.

Solve : my laptop freezes everytime on startup help?

Answer»

Hi,
My first time on this site...my computer keeps freezing up. I cant get far enough (without it freezing) to log online to try to download anything to repair it.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

THANK you.try booting from safe mode.

During the 'start up' PROCESS of your computer, you usually will see a bunch of information displayed as soon as you turn it on - followed by an image of the company you bought the computer from, etc

somewhere along in there will be an option that says "boot options" and its usually F2 key. Though i've had some people say it can also be F4 or F12 - so just keep an eye out on your computer monitor for "boot options"

from there, you want to try and "boot from safe mode"

Thank you...however, i've tried safe mode. The user window comes up and then when i move the mouse it freezes. Any other suggestions?i'm not a 100% expert, but if you cannot get it to boot from safe mode, and it keeps freezing on you, i can only think of 2 more things.

1.) Boot from disk. Either a 3.5" "floppy" or a CD. If you dont have the boot disk that came with your computer, you can typically just download it somewhere online (make sure you get it for the proper operation system) and burn it to a CD or 3.5" disk.
I personally reccomend using the 3.5" - just save the file to the diskette and put it in the A: drive on the computer thats giving you problems - it will boot from there and you can try to repair the boot sector of your hard drive. What version of windows is your problematic PC running?

2.) if the above fails, the only other thing i can think of is to F-Disk. (reformat your harddrive) which is basically just wiping your hard drive clean and re-installing your operating system. This is a very long process, and it always sucks to LOOSE your files, but it's better than buying a new PC
To accomplish this, you'll need the disks that came with your PC.
How to Fdisk
Again, thank you for the info. I'll try and download the boot disk you have suggested. I bought this thinkpad for my son a couple years ago for college. He was going to trash it. I thought i might try and use it. Of course he doesnt have any of the disk that came with the computer. A couple times I've ACTUALLY gotten as far as "restore setting"..however, before i can get to a certain date it always freezes. Anyways, I'll try to find the correct "boot disk". Thanks again. Also, it has windows XP. any suggestions on a site to download the "boot disk"? Quote

2.) if the above fails, the only other thing i can think of is to F-Disk.
Disregard the above, please.
Without some testing, we have no clue what your problem is, so there is no for fdisking anything.
Does it boot all the way to Windows?
How long does it stay up?
Are you doing anything in particular, when the computer freezes?
Do you have Windows CD?
It "almost" always BOOTS up to windows...when i move the mouse is when it freezes. Sometimes i can get farther than others...meaning there are several windows popping up with "aim", work offline, security updates. I move the mouse over to work offline...usually it freezes there. A few times I have been able to get to control panel...but after a couple clicks...if freezes and nothing will work. I have to hold the power button down to turn the power off.
Yes, I have a windows cd.How old is the computer? When was the last time, you cleaned it inside?its about 3 years old...i'm sure its never been cleaned. Should i just take to a tech and see if its worth fixing? I really dont know anything about computers. The laptop is a think pad r 60. I have a disc. to reinstall windows sp for a dell...can i try to reinstall the windows xp with a dell disc?Oh, it's laptop...
In any case, get a can of compressed air, and clean well all vents (with laptop off, of course).
Do NOT use vacuum cleaner.
We'll go from there.thank you for the info. I'll get the cleaner.

If you're getting an error what is the error MESSAGE?

Basic details on your computer, manufacturer (DELL, HP, custom built), how much RAM, CPU (Intel/AMD), etc.

If you're having a problem with a software program, game, or utility what version is it? If you're using Windows this information can often be determined by pressing the F1 key.

If you're having problems with a hardware device such as a printer, modem, video card, etc. MENTION if you have tried the latest drivers.

When did the issue start occurring? Did you recently install a program, new hardware device, or visit a web page?

Solve : install xp on preinstalled vista?

i have dell xps 1530 lapop which came with preinstalled vista. i am having 3 hard disk, c: having vista, d: recovery, i have partitioned e: to have xp. but during installation of xp, the following error comes "Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer. Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer and that any disk related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running a manufacture supplied diagnostic or setup program. Setup cannot continue. To quit setup, press F3".. What should i do?What program did you use to setup E: ? ?
Did you make it an EXTENDED partition ? ?
Has it been formatted yet ? ? Windows won't SEE it until it is...Who! Before you go any further, trying to install XP after Vista will invite trouble. If I had what you have, here is what I would try. Pull out the Vista drive and set it aside in a sage place. PUT another drive in the first POSITION on the PC. Install XP the usual way. Then when I am happy with that, I would consider finding a boot manager program that will make it easy to have both drives in the PC at the same time. There are some free ones out there that will do that just fine. I suspect the reason XP can not see you hard drive is that you probably have a new SATA hard drive, which was introduced after XP was written. I have read that to install XP on a SATA hard drive you must install a special driver that you must download from the computer maker or the hard drive maker’s web site. I have no first hand experience with this PROBLEM, so I hope another forum reader will provide more information. Confirm whether your computer has a SATA drive and try a Google search for installing XP on SATA.

The other difficulty you may face is that dual-booting a computer by installing an older operating system after a newer one will not create a proper boot loader. Here is an excellent tutorial on installing XP after Vista.
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/install-windows-xp-on-your-pre-installed-windows-vista-computer/To Install windows XP on newer machine, go to bios settings and under onboard settings change to ata mode. Then you should be Fine to install Windows XP.

Solve : CLR Error...PLEASE HELP!?

Answer»

My wife and I were having issues with our desktop and were getting a tray.exe error. We found the offending program and deleted it.

Then we started getting an error that our ATI graphics SOFTWARE was having problems with the 'mom.implementation' only on my wife's SIGN in (we both have admin rights). My sign in was unaffected.

ATI suggested that we uninstall their software suite and the NET Framework 3.5, 3, and 2, which we did. We then ran a NET Framework CLeanup Tool and then reinstalled NET Framework 3 and its update and then the newest ATI software suite.

Now my wife is getting the message 'mom.exe - fatal error, clr error: 80004005, the program will now terminate.' I am not getting this message on my sign in. ATI suggested following Microsoft's directions to work AROUND the error code, but we do not have the XP cd as it was preinstalled on our computer. We do have the system recovery DISK, but are scared to use it as we do not wish to lose our data.

We have also tried to set up a new account for my wife with admin rights, but receive the same error message. We have also run Trend Micro virus scan, RegCure, MalwareBytes and PCFixer to see if any would HELP. All to no avail.

Please advise.....or would a hammer to the desktop be in order

Thanks!Quote

Solve : Strange white loading bars when booting xp pro?

Answer»

Normally, I wouldn't recommend this as a remedy for this particular situation, but it is possible the outage may have had an adverse effect on BIOS.

If it were me, I'd check the computer manufacturer's website for an updated BIOS version and try that. However, you may want to wait for additional instructions from the other members here.

Note: If you have recently flashed the BIOS to an updated version, then the problem you're experiencing may be related to this.Thank you for all your help, I apologise for bringing this BACK from the dead, but I have solved the problem.

I don't know which part has solved it exactly, but I put my windows xp disk in, went into that recover mode where you have to type command prompts, typed fixboot and then restarted.

Then I ran Tune Up Utilities, and ran a full disc check.

After that my desktop was coming up pretty quickly and no more weird loading bars, but it kept freezing for a second whenever I tried anything, so I ran the DEFRAGMENT analysis and it said 48% defragmented.

Since then I have just been defragging it for a few hours at a time, and it is slowly running better and better as each day passes.

I am not sure if it was the fixboot, or the disk check that fixed the bars, but all in all, tune up utilities is really sorting out my problems.

Just wanted to post this just in case anyone was interested or had this problem themselves in the future.Nice job
Thanks for posting back...Good News...
However if defrag is struggling that much i'd start looking at a new hard drive...they do GO bad.
There's an easy procedure to save your info so let us know...Yeah, I think my drive is pretty much dead, I actually put that at the end of my last post, but then deleted it as I figured it was irrelevant.

All I was GOING to do is buy a new drive, make it the master and then just install windows onto it and use the other one as a backup drive.

But if there is a way to just copy a drive from one to the other with all the games/applications etc being copied exactly to the other drive, I would be interested in hearing about it.

I was intending to just reinstall everything, and copy all my saves and things, but if there is a way to just copy everything, that could be very handy.

Thanks again for all your help, I was a bit unsure about resurrecting this thread, but who knows, someone else may have this problem in the future.

I have no idea what the problem actually was, but I managed to sort it, which is all that matters.New hard drive should come with cloning program. If it does not the Utilities can be had from the New Drive manuf. website...
Simple procedure:
Hook new drive up as slave.
Boot to the new drive manuf. utility CD.
Select the "clone" option and let it run to completion.
Power down.
Remove old drive completely and hook up/jumper the new drive as master.
Re-boot and you're back in business.
Once all apps and data check out as good you can then hook up the old drive as a slave ; format it and use it for EXTRA storage...Thank you, my friend

Solve : at User accounts logs on then off again?

PC recently attacked by a mimic virus. Seemed successful in cleaning it and turned PC off. At first boot since shutdown, it arrives at the log in screen showing the only user account we have setup (which is not the usually way it boots, it usually just loads and goes straight to desktop) When I click the account to log on, it ACTS as if it is going in and then kinda BLINKS quickly and says logging off.
I have tried all safemodes, bios area and reset to default settings..REPAIR xp with discs...I'm at a lost.
Thanks to anyone with any ideas.

Solve : Right Click Options?

Answer»

This is just a quick question, I recently downloaded 7zip for my new computer, however it is not in the right CLICK menu like it was on my old one. Anyone know how to get the 7zip option on the right click menu? ThanksHello:

If you have 7-Zip integrated with the shell context menu, it adds several OPTIONS to the right-click menu. Even if you UTILIZE the cascaded context menu setting, you still have to wade through the various options. A better approach is to narrow the possibilities by only selecting the options you use to show up in the context menu

1. Open 7-Zip.

2. Click Tools and SELECT Options.

3. Select the Plugins tab.

4. Select 7-Zip from the list of Plugins and click the Options button.

5. Under Context menu ITEMS, uncheck/Check all options that you do not use/You want to use.

6. Click OK.

7. Click OK to close the Options window.

This may help you

Note: RAID/SCSI/Unsupported UDMA users:
You will be prompted to "press F6 to install any third party SCSI or RAID drivers". Most users will not have to press F6, but if you are running RAID, SCSI or unsupported UDMA controllers, then you will have to have your controller drivers on a floppy disk. Did you agree to everything they said? Did you pay any money for the service? Did you do a recent backup?
The SECURITY features in Windows XP do are of little value if you use third-party programs to bypass the security features.

What I am trying to say is that the vast majority of XP issues come from some kind of 'malware' that infects the system. Look at the BRIGHT side At least you have noticed something has happened. Some users don't have a clue.

If a virus scan does not show anything, you may need to do a 'Hijack' log.
And this post should be moved to the spy ware forum.
I agree. It's pretty typical for an infection.Issue:

"Folder options" is missing in the Tools bar of My Computer. (All Windows 9X/ME/2000/XP Operating SYSTEMS)

Cause: Some of the spyware which is on the system might have changed/added this value.

Resolution: To resolve this issue, perform these steps:

1. Click Start, Run
2. Type REGISTRY and click OK
3. Click on "+" beside HKEY_CURRENT_USER
4. Click on "+" beside Software
5. Click on "+" beside Microsoft
6. Click on "+" beside Windows
7. Click on "+" beside CurrentVersion
8. Click on "+" beside Policies
9. Click on "+" beside Explorer
10. In the right-pane, change the value of "NoFolderOptions" key to either 0 or delete that key
11. Quit Registry Editor and restart the computer

Regards

Sykes
@sykes

what will that accomplish exactly? The very same VALUES can be changed via the explorer UI. The only reason they can't in this situation is because a spyware app running in the background is ensuring that it always hides hidden files.

After clearing the machine of infections, your method will work... On the other hand so would the explorer UI...

If you mouse-over that icon - does it say

"This connection has limited or no connectivity. You might not be ABLE to access the internet or some network resources"

I tried to connect via the modem, rather than the router, but still had no joy.

Solve : Copy registry info from old WinXP folder to new WinXP folder?

Answer»

Hi all, long story short, on our work machine running XP Pro we got a virus of some kind that locked us out of the admin account, prevented booting in safe mode etc, and all the usual fixes suggested in other helpful forums were for nil. Since the machine came from another business that was bought out a few years ago, there was no CD to boot from and no disks for the software already installed. The boss used his XP Home edition to reinstall windows (without disturbing the file system), but first we renamed the old windows folder to preserve the settings. Since all the program files and data are still available on the drive, we need to know if it's possible to transfer the old XP registry settings into the new XP folder since we can't reinstall all the programs. We have a second PC in the OFFICE that we can load the HD into if necessary. Any help would be appreciated!Welcome aboard.

Can you be 100% SURE that the 'old' registry is not infected with whatever virus shut-out the admin account. If not then copying the registry files may transfer the virus as well as all the settings.

Am not sure that transferring a registry between Pro and Home is a viable solution for your problem but this site claims its product will transfer registry settings between Windows versions, and here's another with the same claim to fame.

I have no experience with either of the above so cannot recommend one over the other.

Good luck.

Pro to Home registry merger will NOT work...
You will WIND up with a mess on your hands...Patio,
you are correct. I once tried to MOVE my Apachie from the D to the C drive, and ensuring all references to the D were CHANGED to C.
No Sir, no way.

Solve : Multiple XP on hard drive?

Answer»

Hi,
I have two installations of XP on my drive. how I can know which XP is used and safely delete the old one? Any ADVISE is much appreciated
JurgenCan I ask what system you are using and why have you got two versions? Only one is running! Sorry trying to be funny and failing badly! Edit your C:\boot.ini file CAREFULLY.

for example- I have three possible choices when I boot- XP, XP recovery console, or Ubuntu. my boot.ini is as follows:

Code: [Select][boot loader]
timeout=15
DEFAULT=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="MICROSOFT Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons
c:\wubildr.mbr="Ubuntu"

Now, If I only wanted Windows XP to boot, I would change it to:
Code: [Select][boot loader]
timeout=15
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

Since your probably just pressing enter at this prompt most of the time, I'd remove the entry that isn't listed as the default; after confirming that it boots properly into your OS of choice, you can delete the other INSTALLATION (whose location will be have been listed in the entry deleted from boot.ini.).I would of said the exact same thing!!I have done the boot file. I have now C:Windows and C:winxp. How do I know which is the one I can delete?
ThanksQuote from: Mulreay on April 01, 2009, 10:09:20 PM

I would have too.
You don't need to delete the other one the windows because you will need that if you delete that then your os might not work properly.Quote from: Jurgen on April 02, 2009, 01:03:58 AM

Thanks

Which one of these appears in the "Default=" line? that would likely be the one you want to keep.

Also, I recommend making a backup of the file; in case something doesn't work properly.

Another option is to visit Control Panel, System, Advanced Tab, "Start up and Recovery" settings, and then change the "time to display list of operating systems" to a low value, 0 if possible.Quote from: KingPincer on April 02, 2009, 04:24:57 AM

Solve : Thumbnail Folders in "My Documents" are missing names...?

Answer»

I am using Windows XP. On 3-27-09 I noticed that the folders in "My Documents" did not show their name. If I go to "My Documents" using "Nehmah's Documents" the names are there. If I use a shortcut or the Start menu, they are not there. This is ONLY in the Thumbnail area. All others have the correct name. Not a world-stopper, I know but due to poor vision the thumbnail folders are easier to see. I have no idea how to correct this, or even if it cannot be corrected. Respectfully, NehmahHave you tried right clicking on that particular folder and choosing RENAME?Yes. I tried again this afternoon, and still the same. But, I do thank you for the suggestion. NehmahA friend FOUND the answer. IN "My Documents">Views">choose a view that has the names showing, hold down "SHIFT" and change to "Thumbnails" The names appear and stay PUT. Thanks to all who replied. Cordially, Nehmah

Solve : Corrupt Registry on OEM?

Answer»

When I booted my dell vostro 1000 today, I got the BSOD:

STOP: c0000218{Registry File Failure}
Cannot load the hive (file):
\systemRoot\system32\config\SOFTWARE
or its log or alternative.
It is corrupt absent or not writeable.

I turned it off and tried BOOTING it normally, but I got the same thing. Then I tried booting with Last Known Good Configuration, and wouldn't you know it, it worked. But, being the stupid person I am, I turned it off again in order to test if the problem was gone for good. Ironically, I can't log in at all anymore, and am strictly worried about all my data and files I somehow failed to backup (even though I had the chance). I'm typing on a different computer right now.

So, I found this webpage http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545, but unfortunately it says it only applies to non-OEM computers. It is still safe to do it, or is there any other better option? I do still have the installation/recovery cd that came with the computer, but reformatting is not an option until I recover all my data.

Thanks for anybody who can help with this.1. If you have Windows CD, follow the steps from here: http://icrontic.com/articles/repair_windows_xp

2. If you don't have Windows CD...
Download Windows Recovery Console: http://www.thecomputerparamedic.com/files/rc.iso
Download, and install free Imgburn: http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download
Using Imgburn, burn rc.iso to a CD.
Boot to the CD...let it finish loading.
When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.
Then, follow the steps from here: http://icrontic.com/articles/repair_windows_xp, starting below this picture on page 1:
Thanks a lot, it appears this may work! However, before I go ahead with it, I want to ascertain whether the amd athlon 64 x2 has the nx buffer overflow protection. According to the official site it has Enhanced Virus Protection which protects against "buffer overrun attacks", although I don't think this is the same thing.

Here's the official site by the way: http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/ProductInformation/0,,30_118_9484_15670,00.htmlI have no idea, but why is it important? On the site you gave me, it says if you have nx buffer overflow protection you must set the os load option to /noexecute=optin

I believe now (due to wikipedia) that evp is nx overflow protection, so I'll just turn it on I suppose.Oh, I SEE...HEY, thanks a lot, it actually worked! Now to back up everything just in CASE this happens again...Nice job

Solve : Panasonic camcorder worked with XP but not with Vista?

Answer»

I have a four-year-old Panasonic PV-GS120 camcorder that I was able to use with Pinnacle Studio with Windows XP. I tried to edit the movie with Windows Movie Maker in Vista HOME Premium, but it FAILED to recognize the camcorder. SURPRISINGLY, when I first introduced the camcorder to the computer, Vista LOOKED like it was uploading drivers for the camcorder. After this it did not recognize the camcorder. Does anyone know how to get Vista to recognize my camcorder. Do I need to use different software?Travel to Panasonic 's site to see if they have an updated driver for Vista...I just recieved my new computer with Vista, identical problem to the one you described with the pv-gs120 (assuming you were CONNECTING via firewire). How did you solve your problem?

Solve : NEW HARD DRIVE -- I need help tweeking settings back to the way I like them.?

Answer»

Hi everyone. THANKS SO MUCH for all the previous help but my PC finally died. I had Best Buy back-up some files which I can not get to run. (I will get to that shortly) I purchased a new 160 GB Western Digital hard drive and had it installed.

Thank God!! I have internet an connection again....

Ok, I ran my Olympus (Digital Camera) CD so my 'new' pc recognizes it. All is good!

QUESTION NUMBER ONE:

Where are my photos being saved?? I can not find them. They used to go to a MY PHOTOS folder but I do not see a My Photos folder.

HELP PLEASE!

Oh....I am not very technical so go easy with the terms & explainations.

THANKS!!! Hopefully they copied the pics back to your hard drive.
I am assuming that you are running WinXP

Open MY COMPUTER
Double click C:
Click SEARCH FOR FILES and FOLDERS
Click PICTURES, MUSIC or VIDEOS
Click the box next to PICTURES & PHOTOS
Click SEARCH

If your pictures are there they will start displaying.
Once completed you can copy them to your MY Pictures directory. They maybe in another folder.
Thee is a search program you can use to locate photos.
If you have XP you should click Start then Search an a mottle dog COMES up and you answer his questions and wait a bit.Yes, XP. (sorry for not stating that)

I did what you both suggested and all I see is pics that came with the pc. (Fish, WATERFALLS, ballons & other crap I will never use & will likely fill my pc up in time) Need to rid of all the crapware but that can be done later.

I saved 7 photos earlier wheile I was in my Olympus program editing a few pics. I chose SAVE and then SAVE AS. I just went back into Olympus to see if I could 'pretend' to save another and I now see it they are being saved under a random file name. (Example: P4012728)

Did not locate anything when I did the searches you suggested in PICTURES, MUSIC & VIDEO.

Where else could they be hiding???Hmmmmmmmm Or maybe they are going here....

C:\Program Files\OLYMPUS\OLYMPUS Master\TemplateData

Still can't find them but I think that is where they are saved.

TOTALLY LOST There is an option to show file extensions.
Tools>Folder optins>view
find the box with HIDE Extensions for knowwm...
Make sure it is clear, no check.
Also do put a check the one that say show full path name.
Now do the search again, all files and folders named *.JPG

And when you go back to the Olympus program, see if it now shos the full path as well as the file extensions.Quote from: Geek-9pm on APRIL 01, 2009, 06:50:46 PM

If you have XP you should click Start then Search an a mottle dog comes up and you answer his questions and wait a bit.

Same search, different way of initiating. If you're using the Olympus Software program that came with your camera to store and view files...you'll probably find the photos you're looking for within that program...somewhere.

If you know what the name of a file is...you can use the search (as described above) to find these files.

Your best bet...

Open the software you use to view these photos...and try saving one of the photos to find the path to folder where the file is being saved. You can also check the options/preferences of this program to determine where this program is saving your files.Ok, somehow I did it. Is there a way to make the photos default to JPEG? They are set to Exif-JPEG. Not that it's a big deal but it would be nice to just have them set as JPEG.

QUESTION #2
Because of your wonderful posts, I learned that PC's have BLOATWARE/CRAPWARE installed. Since I am working with a brand new Hard Drive & Recovery Disks, is there tons of crapware hidding? If yes, HOW DO I KNOW WHAT TO REMOVE & WHAT NOT TO REMOVE???

THANKS!!!
DeniseJpeg and EXIF-Jpeg are compatible, I believe. the latter just has additional information stored by the camera, not alot though.Ok, that's good to know. THANKS!!

How about the crapware? This is a Sony Vaio from 2004. New Hard Drive was just installed. I have XP/IE. Here is what I do.
Go into the Add/Remove programs list. At the top right there is an option to sort by size. Look for big things that you do not use. Remove it if it is something your really don;t want. But if it is a very small program and once it awhile you might need it, ket it satay.
Ok, I will leave everything for now. I am not sure if I use the programs or not. I am good at finding stuff online but when it comes to programs, files, downloads and technical stuff....I stink!

Thanks!!

Solve : XP HTML Thumbnail. Impossible, but true. What??

Answer»

XP HTML Thumbnail. Impossible, but true. What?
That says it all. Just ONE PC here will show Thumbnails of HTML documents in Windows Explorer running XP. Vista you ask? No, not Vista. Windows XP Pro factory load. Does no work with any version I have from a CD.

Microsoft says it can not be done.
How come I gots 'em?

How can I put them on other PCS ?
It can be done easily. I wrote a SHELL extension that generates thumbnails for text files. kind of pointless, but OH well.

knowing that, it was probably simply a extension installed by another program.
If any of the programmer development kits/tools are installed this makes it work as well...Oh! I have the Visual C++ 2005 installed. Is that it? Cool!
So it I put in on my other machines I can get the HTML Thumbnails?

Solve : Cannot get Windows to load after new build.?

He saw the atmosphere betwen the ground and the ionosphere as in effect, a WAVEGUIDE for power frequency (50 Hz or so) power transmission; he was not a WHACKO, he invented the POLYPHASE AC power distribution system we USE today. Gotcha...
Sorry for the misunderstanding.

I'm convinced his theories are still not only sound but very practical.

Solve : RAW file system?

Answer»

Alright, so I was USING Window Washer (a program that securely deletes files) and I was about to start washing the free space of my computer, which I have done many times before. However, it wouldn't run. So I suspected it was a disk error or something. So I ran dskchk (first from windows, then from the command prompt on reboot), and it keeps complaining about how the file system is RAW. When I look at the disk in My Computer, it says that it's NTFS. All of the solutions that I've found involve a REFORMAT. Please tell me there's another WAY, because this is a shared computer and I can't reformat.hmmm, when I saw RAW in the topic, I was pretty sure it was a hooped drive; however from the sounds of things it is still booting up properly?

And for clarification we are referring to the chkdsk utility, correct?the computer has yet to stop booting on me.

and yes, the chkdsk utility that windows comes with.

thanx for the reply, im still googling for the answerOK.

What about running chkdsk from within windows? does that recognize it as RAW or NTFS?

are we talking about the drive with windows installed, or a data drive?

OK.

What about running chkdsk from within windows? does that recognize it as RAW or NTFS?

I tried running it from within windows, and it says "windows was unable to complete the disk check", so i dont know if it's treating it as NTFS or RAW. DiskInternals Undelete claims that it is NTFS and that it has bad CLUSTERS if thats any help.

are we talking about the drive with windows installed, or a data drive?

the drive with windows installed
If the BOOT drive was RAW it would not boot....

I don't mean to be combative, but there's only 1 drive on my computer. I think it may be only a small portion that's corrupted or something. Also, sorry about the late response. It may only be one drive but from the sounds of it there is more than one partition...unless there is an external drive involved in this dilemna.Quote from: patio on April 04, 2009, 03:03:30 PM

hmmm...i haven't encountered any other partitions while using it.

while searching around on google (specifically: "windows was unable to complete disk check RAW"), it's been suggested by others who have the same problem that it's due to many bad sectors of a hard drive clustered nearby. is there any tool besides dskchk that would be worth trying in regards to this idea?DLoad and run the FREE diagnostics from the drive manuf. website...
Follow the info on creating a bootable floopy/CD to do so.
Run the long test.
This will tell you if the drive can be trusted with valuable data or not.
