Solve : Replication Problem in DFS(Distributed File System) shared?

Answer»

Hi All,

I am working on two SEPARATE AD domain, One domain is edh and another one is ind-del domain. I have some SHARED folders through DFS (Distributed File System). I have added some files on deposites folder in edh domain login but that shared not SHOWING updation of these files on deposites folder in ind-del domain login. Showing me updation in edh domain login but not in ind-del domian login. I think there is DFS replication problem on shared in ind-del domain. Am not aware of DFS shared replication issues. How it can be configured, applied or resolved? Can any body help me on this? Highly obliged someone in helping me. So, Please do the needful. Looking forward to hear from someoen soon.

Thanks a lot Compuet Hope

To answer your question with a question. How do you know it is not updated?
In some of the MS networking, what you see is not what you get. The visual representations may not show the current state of things unless you have a thing that will refresh the current status. Providing a nice report to ANYBODY or everybody is NOT the key purpose of the DFS. It does have its own authentication method and works to provide piratical redundancy.
If you can prove that is is not working as outlined in the MS documentation, send a report to Microsoft with you proof. Bit if you are doing some kind of thing outside of the intent of the system there is no guarantee that it will wok.
In a large system, expect apparent latency. But the system will TAKE care of this if you let it.
That is all I can offer. The documentation is heavy stuff. I need to get some sleep.Quote

two separate AD domain
OK. Good Morning. And I re read your post.
Do MOT confuse DFS with an older product with that name.
Why do you think you can have more that one domain in the Microsoft DFS?
The only documentation I have found, so far, says do not try what you did.
The Domains have to be in the same forest and use the same FRS.
This link defines the FRS that must be used in Arrive Directory.

Solve : Need help regarding crashing computer!! :)?

Answer»

Alright so im pretty upset because my new Gateway dx4200-09 model that i got 3 months ago is starting to act up... and of course my warranty is expired... hooray. So basically about a week ago it was routine I was on a secure online game... (WoW) and it just freezes up and i have to turn it off. It stops til the next day and then it does it again... occasionally a blue screen with words pops up because it disappears really fast. So I run a virus check- None found. It keeps happening so I give in and restore it to factory settings... I re-load all my games and disks and a few hours later... BAM. It happens again. It crashes or freezes or restarts itself on pretty much anything... internet, word, games, anything. No idea WHATS going on... but ive restarted the thing about 3 times... really not wanting to buy a new one.
*Also, if it matters: I also installed an Nvidia 9600 graphics card about a month prior to crashes... but I dont see how it could be affecting it just now. Tried it all... updating drivers... anything I could think of... nothing cures the spontaneous dying. In all regards to other answers... I had already bought a 500w PSU with my graphics card.. so thats not the problem.

ANY HELP AT ALL WOULD BE AMAZING!! Let me know if there is any more information you need to help me and ill try to find it. I used to be a TECHNICIAN and typically if blue screen isnt a virus its a hardware issue I would first try a different virus program (a trial will do if you don't have another one) and if that DOESNT pick up and thing I have some hardware diagnostic software that will check and see what hardware is failing and if non of your hardware is failing the las thing you would need to do is reinstall your OS.Need to know the stopcode and any drivers mentioned on the blue screen. To give you time to READ it follow these steps;

1. Go to Start -> Control Panel -> System
2. Go to Advanced
3. Under the Startup and Recovery section, click Settings...
4. Under System Failure un-check "Automatically restart"

The new graphics card may be demanding more power than your power supply can provide. Not that the 9600 is a particularly demanding card, but given that we don't know what rating your PSU is, it's a possibility.Your Gateway has an onboard 300w psu.
The Nvidia 9600 comes in two different WATT capabilities 96 watt and 59 Watt.

The 59 Watt card requires a minimum 300W PSU.
The 96 Watt card requires a minimum 400W PSU.

Those numbers right there should tell what's wrong.
Upgrade your onboard PSU. TD has a 750W for $89.00.
Good luck. This may be a heat issue.........make certain all heatsinks and fans are free of dust, check fans are working, check memory is seated and check cpu is firmly in place. You've been inside the case so something may have been disturbed and you were not aware. How is a 3 month old Gateway out of warranty ? ?Maybe new "refurbished"

Solve : Acpiec Errors?

Answer»

Due to my recent registry failure (presumably fixed now), I just checked my event viewer, and I've noticed an error that although somewhat rare (occurs once a month in general, but it occurred THREE days out of five near the end of february), and has been occurring consistently since at least december on my Vostro 1000 (thats the furthest back the log goes). The error is this:

\Device\ACPIEC: The Embedded Controller (EC) hardware didn't respond within the timeout PERIOD. This may indicate an error in the EC hardware or firmware, or possible a POORLY designed BIOS which accesses the EC in an unsafe manner. The EC driver will retry the failed transaction if possible.

So, my question is: is this a serious error, and is the error likely caused by what it says (IE the EC or BIOS)? I'm going to try updating the BIOS, but if the problem is the EC, will it be necessary to replace it? My laptop is still under warranty so that may be possible.

Under warranty?
Random errors?
More frequent?

Sounds like premature Hardware End of Life.

Not likley anything you did or could un do.
Call the support people and give them details.
Be persistent.Quote

or possible a poorly designed BIOS which accesses the EC in an unsafe manner

Any recent BIOS updates, or system updates?I just installed the latest BIOS (well, two days ago as I was on vacation yesterday) and now having checked the event log it turns out that while the machine was resetting after a successful installation, 5 acpiec errors occurred in RAPID succession (within seconds of eachother). Does this mean the BIOS is definitely to blame, or is it just contributing to the problem?

Solve : Tryin 2 fix PC 4 sons bday, keeps crashing, please help?

Answer»

This puter has turned into a nightmare. It has a MSI 745 ULTRA AMD 1100 with AMI BIOS. Its older but plenty for a 10 year old gamer. I have tried everything i know. I have a Vaio loaded with toys and have gone as far as to pull out mem an video to test compatibility with this 1. I have also swapped out mem , cdrom, and 2 other video cards i have, replaced connecting cables/wires with known good ones, unhooked all devices, cleaned all dust, an replaced cmos battery. This is what i have...(This situation never repeats at the same time) sometimes windows loads an seems fine until i start loadin something or surf and then it restarts. Sometimes it doesnt make it past BIOS before it restarts. I do get a beep code (single beep) which for this i believe is bad MEMORY but i have tried several known 2 be good mems. Honestly it seemed to be running fine and i wasn't gettin any beep code before i started updating to service pack 3 (which was the 1st crash) but now i cant keep it runnin long enough to reformat. Personally i dont think its the update but im no expert. I have an old Sidewinder force feedback pro and other gadgets and have this cool gaming setup i was doing for him for his birthday and this has become so frustrating. Any help would be much appreciated. I would travel to Crucial's website enter the specs and see exactly what type of RAM that machine uses and then shop around for the best price...
You should get lucky...RAM is a real bargain right now.Tried another power supply? Disconnect all unnecessary hardware, remove all but one stick of memory. Gradually add more hardware if you find the machine's reliability has improved.

If you get blue screens, the stop code and any drivers MENTIONED would be very helpful in tracking down the problem.
To ensure you get time to read a BSOD screen, follow these steps;

Go to Start -> Control Panel -> System
Go to Advanced
Under the Startup and Recovery section, click SETTINGS...
Under System Failure un-check "Automatically restart" Yea, already did all this. Even tried different power supply. Thanx for the reply but as stated i have installed memory known to be good. All of a sudden it seemed stable for about 30 min and then restarted and now im getting different codes. Sometimes when it restarts it beeps once and sometimes twice. Single beep codes on this bios suggest bad mem but im replacing with known "good" mem, does this leave me with a bad motherboard or is there any other possibilities? It sounds quite like something up with the board itself given your reply.

What happens if you remove everything except CPU - take out all memory, leave graphics card in, switch on and check for beep codes, then take out the graphics card too - you ought to get suitable beep codes warning of lack of memory, lack of VGA etc...

"Sometimes it doesnt make it past BIOS before it restarts." - that is definitely a bad sign...

You said you replaced the CMOS battery, have you reset the BIOS to fail-safe defaults, or did you clear CMOS memory anyway?earlier when i removed graph card i got normal beep for that, what seemed odd to me was when i removed memory i recieved no beeps, at all. the puter just sat there, no nothing. Is this normal? I thought bios would load even without mem.thanx 4 every1s response. i finally pulled the main board, reseated the processor, reinstalled main, cleaned all connections, and hooked it all back up. Its runnin! I got a few blue screens when i tried updating the bios or windows so im just leavin it alone. Its runnin games and can surf so its good enough. He came home and is blown away. I have the whole "gamers" setup for him, he couldn't be happier. 1 thing though...microsoft never made any drivers for the force feedback pro for windows xp so it doesnt feedback like it did with 98. does any1 know if there is a driver out there that will run it like it use to be? I have always been blown away that micro didnt make compatible driver updates, its an awesome game controller.

Solve : Computer restarting itself?

Answer»

Over the past few days my COMPUTER has been restarting itself more and more frequently. Nothing specific sets it off but at any time it will just shut off and reboot, but once it starts I cant even get past my log on screen before it does it again. I have to turn it off, completely for at least an hour before it will go back on again. Also, sometimes when I try to boot it back up my computer looks like its turned on but nothing is coming through on it (my monitor goes to sleep like my computer isn't even on!) Not sure if its a virus, so I recently bought a new virus SCAN, Kaspersky, but i cant keep my computer on long enough to get a FULL scan in, and furthermore Kaspersky will not stay "updated", so it keeps telling me my computer is at risk. I have also tried running it in safe mode but it still shuts itself off. Any help on this is greatly appreciated, I have no idea what to do! ThanksAnything strange happen lately ?......... like screen freeze ups or say less frequent random boots leading up to the CURRENT PROBLEMS.........good chance its your power supply.....try swap in a known good unit....if you stubbed a toe against the case lately check that the cpu and memory haven't been dislodged. How much time can you keep it up in Safe Mode?
It may be overheating.

Solve : "APPLICATION NOT FOUND"?

Answer»

I keep getting the error "Application Not Found" when I try to run anything and when I try to open something as simple as the Add/Remove Hardware Program.

The bad news is, I bought this computer at a pawn shop and do not have the start up disk or any other disks for that matter, I can not afford to take to a shop and I just need to know if there is any way at all possible to fix it myself?!

Thanks.More info on the machine and what FLAVOR of Windows it is.......It is a hp pavilion F1703. I'm pretty sure it is Windows XP.

The exact error is:

C:\WINDOWS\system\32\rundll32.exe
Application Not Found

I am not a computer genius, if you need more info, please let me know! In Safe Mode scan for malware.

Thanks, but I am not sure how to do that. I know that i will turn off machine and TAP the F8 key, then it will pop up something different...but from there I would not have a clue.

Please advise.

Thanks AgainAre you 100% sure about that message?

C:\WINDOWS\system\32\rundll32.exe

Should read "C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe"

Open a command prompt and type

DIR C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\RUNDLL*.*

press return.

What files are listed? How exactly do I get to a prompt? What files should be listed here? If I do this, will anything bad happen to the data on the drive?

Does this MEAN that you have seen this...and recovered from it in the past?

Thanks so much for your help and response...I am greatly appreciative of it!!!

I took the path in your original post to be a typo ...\system\32\ and put the error message into Google, this was the result, a bit of reading to do. Some problems are associated with malware and I think a full scan with your AV program, fully updated, would be a good start-point.

To startup in Safe Mode please read this article. Select Safe Mode option when the boot menu appears.

To get to the Command Prompt use Start>Run type CMD in the dialog box and click OK. To exit from the Command Prompt type EXIT then hit Enter. Uppercase is used for emphasis only.Does this mean that you have seen this...and recovered from it in the past?

bwaters , when you see what the title is under the name you will know that the

person knows what they are doing and you will get good advice , harryWhen I try to "RUN" the CMD, it OPENS the window to choose the program to open with. It lists all the PROGRAMS...I can not run anything. It seems that your file associations have gone haywire.

Go here and download/run Exe File Association Fix. Read the notes at the top of the site page before proceeding.

Solve : Attempt to clone laptop HD is causing laptop to cycle without booting?

Answer»

While trying to clone my laptop's hard drive (running Windows XP Pro) so as to install its mirror image on my desktop, I must have done something that caused this message "LTDR MISSING."

When I googled that message for help, I found your forum, and did as instructed, or at least I think I did. I know I inserted the W XP cd disk at the right moment, pressed the "r" key as instructed but never got to hit the 1 key.

Right now the computer is endlessly booting into Windows, then entering setup's first WINDOW but never stopping long enough so as to allow me to repeat the instructions before it goes crazily about repeating the aforesaid cyle.

I've checked the BIOS to make sure it is still got the hard drive as first in the boot order. But, no luck. Unless I press the "off" button, it seems as though the laptop would go till doomsday. I appreciate any adice and thank all in advance for the assistance.

Hi, Lots of people hee to try and help you.
Yes, some OEM CDs of Windows XP to NOT have the repair option.
But first a few questions.
Whay kind of laptop? What type of HDD?
What kind of Desktop?
How did you interface the laptop HDD?
Quote

install its mirror image on my desktop
Did you mean to say that you made a copy or backup of the laptop HDD using a suitable image program? Which program? (Some programs will alter system information on the source disk. Who knows why.)
Did you mean to say that now your Desktop runs the Laptop XP system?
Were you able to "see" the files on the Laptop HDD?

Do you have anyway to force the laptop to boot from a CD?
Such as BartsPE or any other diagnostic CD?

Hi ,

Manythanks (no kidding ). The laptop is a Dell Inspiron that's been my main computer for a year or two while I decided how to get and what to get to help me as a writer and photographer (both my main work(s) before I retired).
Within the last month, I bought on Dell auction, a WS380 and a smaller Dell Optilex GX 280. I'm using the latter right now to type this reply. I intended to upload the laptop's hardrive (its image, really) onto the workstation which is the niftier of the two Dells, and use that as my main computer for writing and photography work. I didn't want to have to buy another copy of Photoshop since I had a working copy of the software as well as my photos on the laptop, so......
I bought Ghost 14 and a tryout of Acronis. I tried the Acronis (very lengthy process that took about three hours), which didn't work out, even after the software's people spent several hours trying to make it so. (While I did manage to get the software to mirror-image the laptop's HD and transplant it onto the WS380, I didn't have whatever was necessary to unlock the image (its a TIB file).) So, I thought to use the Ghost 14, which I did own.
It was during the process of using said software that I somehow unhinged the laptop and got the message that the LTDR was not to be had or was injured or somehow among the MIA.
Yes, I can boot the laptop (I'm pretty sure using a floppy or a CD.
No, the transplanting of the laptop's OS to the desktop hasn't happened as yet. And no, I can't see anything on the laptop right now or even its image on the desktop.
I'm using an Iomega BUP machine with a 120GB HD to copy the laptop's HD.

I hope this helps you to help me and I do appreciate the help.

Mbrand

I just happen to be using a Dell 280 right now. Nice, but now I wish it was a standard size, can not put stuff inside it.
Norton Ghost can be put on a CD. At least the old version I had. It can send an image out over a LAN in some ceases. If the laptop has NetBios. Some do.
To be bookable, the image has to go on a primary partition, most often the one and only. The partition has to be active. Some people will contradict me on this, but I have never been able to boot a primary partition that was not active.
Norton Ghost may not always set the partition active. I am not sure of this, but I recall I have had that problem. So I would boot a Linux Live CD and use the GB part thing to just set the active flag. Big overkill, but that way I don't have to try Partition Magic and try to wade my way through the maze. The Linux thing is quick and easy, but possibly risky.
I was able to make an image of my XP configuration of the system inside of XP. I used a program from Run time Software. Free. I would map a network drive. Then use the DriveImage XML to create a image on the network drive. The network drive was mapped to empty folder on a very Huge partition on my workshop machine out in the barn. Int a reasonable amount of time, I have and image on my workshop server.
http://www.runtime.org/driveimage-xml.htm
I do NOT like Acorn, or whatever it is called. I bought it and stop using it. I just could not understand what is was trying to do. The XML program stays inside the limits of XP and does things the XP way and I understand what it is doing. The image it makes can only be used by XML, but that is not a problem. The program is free and very RELIABLE and predictable.
With an adapter you can use you main computer to read the laptop drive.
Google Laptop to Desktop IDE adapter.
BTW. You can read IDE drives on a computer with SATA drives if the CD-Drive is IDE. Just use the cable from the CD-drive and reboot the machine. The bios will find you have a new HDD in place of the CD-Drive.
At this point, I think the best thing is to take a look at the laptop drive and see if there's a way to recover the files.
Hope I did not overload this thread, but this sort of thing is in my recent memory and I just had to let it out. Ask me later and I might forget.
Almost forgot, Yes, you can make the second drive, (drive 1?), active in drive management in Windows XP. Hi,

At this point, I'm pretty dscouraged. Idon't understand what you're suggesting I do (chalk it up to my inexperience )

I've spent most of this MORNING and the afternoon trying to download and make an ASR, i.e. until I saw the computer figuring it had to download something like 22 hours worth of files.

I went back to the laptop and it endlessly cycles (recycles) noting first that "insufficient resources exist for completion) -- which is after it tried to run setup. It will finally (after loading a slew of windows files) give me the message that "the requested operation was unsuccessful."

I can cable (I'm pretty sure) my desktop to the laptop in a two computer network. How would that help is my question. I've also got two floppies from years ago. One s a system boot disk and the other is a Windows 98 startup disk for a thinkpad. Are either of these any help. Tell me, should I be trying to get the laptop to boot and if and when I do, what then? Is there anything I can do in Setup, because I've been able to get in there with no trouble.

I appreciate your patience and time. I hate to think of pulling the plug on the laptop.

Thanks again for any and all suggestions,

mbrand

OK. Sometimes things work, sometimes the don't

Using a floppy disk or CD with Norton Ghost.
Our objective is to crate monster file that represents all the stuff on the Laptop Hard Drive, except the free space. This file we shall be stored on you Desktop as a safety net. We don;t want to lose anything on that drive, if at all possible.

If the computer boots a floppy disk, that is a starting point.
Likewise if it can Boot a CD. Norton Ghost can do it either way.

So we want to try and recover as much as we can off of the hard drive before things get any worse.Or we make things worse.
The Norton Ghost is able to boot from a CD and them send an image of the local Hard Drive over the network using NetBios. You would, i recall, also have to have your Desktop set up to act as host for the operation. I think you have to prepare two Botable Cd's, one for each machine. (It has been awhile since I did this.)
I believe that you can also do it with a floppy, but there can be a problem getting on the Ghost stuff on one floppy if you want all the possible
options. Maybe that is why I use Cd's instead of floppies when I can.
Is there enough free space on your desktop to receive an image of the laptop Windows XP? sometimes you can have 20GB of stuff on the drive. The image will be a bit smaller due to compression. The image by itself is not usefull. But we need it if we fail to fix the laptop drive. With the image we can put it back just like it was and try again. I now do my repair work this way. I do not try to fix a drive until I have a virtual image of the drive somewhere. Norton Ghost can use this to put the drive back just like it was.
I don't like the others as much, because they are to hard to learn and you can make a bad mistake. Of course, with any you have to think about what you are doing.
Let me know if you are comfortable with using Norton Ghost.
If it seems too much, we can do something else.

Solve : WinXP Pro new installation?

Answer»

Hello all..

I am currently using 2 hard disks at the moment, DRIVE 1 is primary with partition C: and E: while the second drive is also in 2 partitions D: and F: respectively. Currently the first partition (D:) in the second drive doesn't contain any data or files while the second partition (F:) in second drive contains misc files and MUSIC files of around 3 GB.

I plan to remove the primary partition (drive 1 C: & E:) and install the secondary drive (drive 2 D: & F:) as my primary disk. I also want to install Windows XP Professional into the second drive, can anyone tell me if I install WINXP into the first partition (D:), would I lose all my files and data in the second partition (F:) ?

Figure 1:-
Primary Master:Partition 1 (Drive C:) Windows ME
Partition 2 (Drive E:)
Secondary Master:Partition 1 (Drive D:) Formatted blank drive
Partition 2 (Drive F:) Music, misc files (about 3 GB)

So when I move the secondary master into primary then it would become:

Figure 2:-
Primary Master:Partition 1 (Drive C:) Formatted blank drive
Partition 2 (Drive D:) Music, misc files (about 3 GB)

Figure 1 is my current configuration. I do not plan to install the first hard drive until after the installation of WinXP.
Figure 2 is how the configuration would look like before WinXP install.

So my question is, would I lose all data in Partition 2 (D:) after i do a fresh install on Partition 1 (C:) ?

I hope my explanation isn't too confusing for anyone to understand.. thanks for the help.. The 2nd partition should be UNTOUCHED by the XP install on the first partition...

Solve : after a restore...?

I had to do a system restore and it returned my computer to proper working condition. My question is, can I still access files that I had BEFORE the restore? Particularly word documents? Literally two days after the restore my flash drive was in my PURSE that got stolen...and it had the end of my book! So can I still get to that document after I have restored my computer??? Help please!Hello Miss,
you should be able to if you plainly did a Restore, unless you mean a System Re-install from your CD, than not likely.
Why don't you just search for that document, by name, or by a certain phrase in that document, if you can recall what it is.
Good luck. What kind of restore was it?
Windows System Restore, or computer RECOVERY?you will find that if you restored to 2 months ago and you are looking for something installad/d/loaded 2 weeks ago those items would need to be re-installed.. although it may be possible to track those items perhaps this is something we both may learn about !! I am RUNNING Windows XP and it was a system restore, I didn't use the disk it was right off the computer and the file is a Microsoft Word documentQuote from: MissyinMT on April 03, 2009, 07:21:59 AM

I didn't use the disk it was right off the computer

Did you do this within windows? Did it prompt you for a date?Like this?

1. CLICK Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore.

2. On the Welcome screen, click Restore my computer to an earlier time, and then click Next.

3. On the Select a Restore Point page, select the date from the calendar that shows the point you'd like to restore to, and then click Next.

Anyway, my Sony desktop crashed the other day. I had a new Hard Drive installed and recovery disks were used. PC is good to go. Trying to tweek it back to the way I am used to having it.

QUESTION:
I had a form filler program CALLED ROBOFORM on this PC before it crashed. I had MANY years of passwords and stuff saved there.

When I brought this PC to the Geek Squad at Best Buy the other day to see if the PC could be repaired, I was TOLD the hard drive went. They were, however, able to make a DISK with my ROBOFORM passwords. I can not get the disc to open the list of passwords. It asks me where I want to open the and give me a list of choices. (Paint, notepad, adobe etc.) None of them will run/open the files so I can see them.

This was a program that I paid for. How can I make the disc start to fill my forms again when I am at certain sites? (Gee, hope I am making sense)

I just realized I never downloaded the ROBOFORM program onto this pc. Does that have anything to do with the disc not opening??

If I go and download ROBOFORM, how does it know who I am. How will it know about the disc full of passwords? How do they recognize each other?

HELP PLEASE..........My Passwords are VERY important to me.

Thanks!!Yes. I know the website but what do I do? Will they know my info or do I need to pay again. I am lost.

(Sorry)

DeeTheir support stinks!!

Should I download the FREE version and then somehow run my disk??? Will that make RoboForm recognize my passwords & link them to this PC??

I am soooo lost with this.

I don't know what you mean by ... P.S. Save the the compressed download to a disk for a backup Do you mean the disk that best buy backed up for me that I can not open??Ok, I downloaded the program and found passwords and order number. I now have a RoboForm PRO account.

Problem.......

(Best Buy burnt a copy of my Passwords onto a disk)
I went into RoboForm -> Options -> User Data --> Restore. I get a pop-up box called BROWSE FOR FOLDER. I see a folder called MY ROBOFORM DATA.
I click on it and get a gray box RoboForm Error:

Cannot copy Roboform folder 'C:\Documents and settings\Denise\My Documents\My Roboform Data' to folder 'C:\Documents and settings\Denise\My Documents\My Roboform Data'\Default Profile' because:
-Source and Destination folders are the same, or
-Source folder is inside destination folder, or
-Destination folder is inside Source folder

I am sure the data I am LOOKING for is on the MY ROBOFORM Disk.

I think Best Buy put it on an E drive. Does it belong on a C drive?
(lol... I am starting to almost not even understand what I am saying, nevermond what I am doing)

I had saved the file to my Desktop. I THINK I tried to change the folder from E to C. I did the whole process again ( I went into RoboForm -> Options -> User Data --> Restore) and got the same error. (above)

PLEASE--- CAN SOMEONE HELP ME?put the best buy disk in your CD player and go to it when you get the box that says browse for folder.....

Ok, I was right. It's saved on the E drive on the Best Buy disk. Is this where it belongs? I bever in my life used anything with an E folder.

SPOLIER: Which do I choose to open it? (Play Media Files, View Slideshow, Play, etc. )

The HEADING ON THE BOX STATES: 090331_1103 (E:)

Maybe this will help? (see attached)

Solve : Different Blue Screens!?

How many blue screen do we have in windows/systems' problems that displays?, What are the different causes of these haults in computers?, And what are the solutions?
Pls just say the ones KNOW about! And you can help by sending correct and full detailed text to
"REMEMBER, we are all LEARNING"

There are so many different BSODS, it's hard to LIST. Best we can do is give us an example of one that you are experiencing or need help on, and we can help you from there. My fingers will begin to bleed trying to type every BSOD, and fixes for all of them. Why not just try to say the ones you know maybe that will do part of it. Solve : A complicated problem! Sorry!?

Answer»

Hi there and thanks so much for reading this!

Basically, my Dell inspiron 6000 got a virus which wiped most things including drivers. My friend fixed it for me over Christmas break but I think he installed a fake copy of windows as it stopped working with a message saying 'you need to activate this copy of windows, click ok to activate' then I'd click ok and it's just log me out, so I couldn't go any further.

My Dad sent me the correct Windows XP home disk for my computer so I FORMATTED my computer and re-installed windows, but now the graphics seem too big and I can't get on the INTERNET at all to download drivers or even activate my windows properly. When I plug in my internet cable nothing happens, I've tried setting up new connections and automatically detecting settings but nothing is working... I really don't want to have to take it to a computer repair shop but I'm reaching the end of my tether! Any help or advice would be really really appreciated.
Thanks,
CherryAfter formatting the computer and re-installing Windows you should have plenty of time to re-activate the computer. If your still getting the activation prompt it's likely that the computer was not formatted.

If your not wanting to do the format process again you can CALL Microsoft to activate Windows at: 1-888-571-2048

Finally, if you're needing to get drivers on the computer without Internet access, which you may still need to do even after activation my suggestion would be to download the drivers on another computer with Internet access and then copy those files to a USB flash drive or other MEDIUM and install them from that.

Solve : Print Priview XP/IE7?

Answer»

Hi

My colleague indicated on her old COMPUTER, when she would do a PRINT preview, she would set the 'Change Print' to 100% and it would stay that way. On her newer computer running XP SP3, it's stuck on shirink to fit. Is there away to make the change permanent?

ThanksI just checked my IE8 on XP SP3 and it's the same as your colleague, always comes up "Shrink to fit" although you could change it.

1. Apply the latest Internet Explorer hotfix (I already had this) and then...

2. REGISTRY patch

Code: [Select]reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\MAIN\FeatureControl\FEATURE_STF_Scale_Min" /v iexplore.exe /t REG_DWORD /d 100 /f
Now it comes up with 100% as default.

Thank You!!!

Solve : Windows won't load?

Answer»

Hey guys,

I recently SUFFERED a problem with my Acer Travelmate laptop. This is a 4-5 year old laptop and I've never experienced this issue before. I arrived home a couple days ago and as I was checking my email, I get a BLUE screen that said something like "begin memory dump" and it restarted itself.

Now, I expected to be able to get to the window which lets me choose whether to choose safe mode, normal mode or last known working configuration. However, all the computer does now is when I turn it off and back on, is show the acer screen and right after that, a blank black sceen with a blinking underscore at the top left.

I've tried to get to safe mode by pressing f8 but it does not get me anywhere.

Forgive me for my lack of computer knowledge but I hope someone can help me. I do not have a windows xp cd or recovery cd but I am looking for one at the moment.

windows xp
acer travelmate 4000LCI
40 gig hd
256 ram

TIA!This does not sound like a window's problem mate but a SYSTEM problem. I'm no expert mate but windows will always GIVE you a command prompt even when it's failed. It sounds more like a BIOS failure or some such. You say you have no command prompts when you boot your laptop up? Just a flashing cursor? This will sound stupid but have you got a dvd/cd in the drive when you try to boot? or a memory stick/memory card? The computer will automatically try and boot from a recovery disk if one is in your drive even if it is not one. Let me know..Hey Mulreay,

Thanks for the reply.

I am worried that might be the case. I have gotten ahold of a XP cd and am going to reinstall windows on it. Should I do that first or should I try repairing using Recovery Console?

I should add that I don't want to lose some important data I have and if repairing using the recovery console does that, please let me know!!

ThanksCould be the CMOS battery...just a couple of bucks for the battery.Have you backed up before the problem started? What kind of files are you trying to save?Hey guys,

I tried to reinstall windows xp (I should add the harddrive is partitioned to 20gigs each [c: and d:]). As I tried to do this, I noticed that c: is completely empty whereas d: had 700 megs or so remaining. In short, it wouldn't let me install xp onto c:.

So does this mean the harddrive is done? If so, would I be able to recover what is still in d:? Should I try to formatting the partitioned c: and see if installing xp on it will work?

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks! You understand that re-installing Windows will wipe all your data ...? ?
Be that as it may if C:\ is empty why would Windows not install there ?
More info including the entire error messages you are getting.Mate it sounds like you need to re-install windows. If you have no back-up you will lose all your data though. But if you can't access it now then.. whats the difference. You will lose EVERYTHING though mate. But if my drives are partitioned, wouldn't the data in d: be safe?
Sounds like the hard drive is dead.

RUN hard drive diagnostics
http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287I think that is the case too
How do I run that if I can't get into Windows? You use it to create a bootable floppy/CD...

Thanks for the really unhelpful advice guy's. 3hrs that's a long time. I tell you what think of the number 2 for 3hrs. You can't think of anything else just 2. It's a random advert?? That is so lame, it's been on this site since I started so there's no control on this site? Broni don't try to personally attack me I have lots of common sence and I don't need your stupid comments. This is twice you have personally attacked me so what's the deal?

3 hours is NOT a long time. Especially in the context of a forum.

now a chat conversation, thee minutes would be a long pause.

The admin is handling the Advertisements- they were rated red and should not have been there. however they were still advertisements, and regardless of where they are, or what site, they should be handled with caution. In fact, if I had my Ad blocker disabled I would have seen them and notified the admin myself.

The problem WE have is that you are trying to blame CH for your impatience. what did you expect "regcure" to do that couldn't be done with CCleaner; or even better by doing nothing? If you had an issue you could have posted about the issue.

If it's any consolation I paid 60 bucks for System mechanic about two years ago for some stupid reason; didn't even use the bugger. that's 60 dollars down the drain.

I know your all experts when it comes to computers but I have a degree in Astro-physics and I don't take the piss out of you for not knowing the ins and outs of the way the universe works.

tell you what- MAKE a forum about astrophysics, and I'll make a post like, "what breed was Schrödinger's cat"? and we'll see how friendly the answers are,

As a sidebar nobody knows how the universe works;(of course, that's not literally what you meant), However there are a number of theories on how it BEGAN, (well, one *ahem* real theory) and several on how it ends (the "big crunch" or the entropical spiral, and neither sounds too pleasant). In addition to studies of various phenomena such as Black holes, neutron stars, and quasars. We only know these things in the same way people in the 1600's *knew* the earth was flat. This is why in all sciences for all conclusions it's best to have "strong opinions, weakly held". Of course even the most proven theory, for example, the strongly held belief that the Earth was the center of all things, can be disproven should new facts be brought to light.

One might wonder what this has to do with anything... Well, the same Scientific attitude takes place in the computer sciences, and while I might go out on a limb and say that most members of this forum don't have a Computer science degree, which I have neither, helpers generally APPLY a game of logic to determine the cause of a victim's problems.

Of course it doesn't get so difficult as to know the implementation details and their differences between a Automatically sorted tree and Red-Black trees, and in fact these are usually kept in secrecy to protect childrens innocence (or something); to be truthful the few times that I've felt the proper context to explain some programming issue in great detail the next reply either begs the question or simply expresses confusion.

don't leave however, my friend, you are quite welcome here- Although I of course cannot speak for anybody but myself

But seriously, what breed was schrodinger's cat? Would a Hairless breed perhaps be more susceptible? Would giving the cat a PAIR of fuzzy dice skew the results, or perhaps lead to an alternate universe where all cats have fuzzy dice for eyes? who knows. the universe is our burrito; and we want to bend the very fabric of the tortilla, or some other appropriate metaphor, lol.

you should stick around. I usually let fly with a humourous anecdote about some random animal EVERY once in a while. Why, I recall that one time, when I saw that bear on the highway with a garbage can, and I asked him what he was doing, and he said, "why, dear sir, I'm the garage BEAR of course".

So it turns out, in addition to the well known tooth fairy, Santa claus, and Easter bunny, there is also a garbage bear.

After being told that a police car pulled be over and I realized that even though some nice gentlemen wearing ski masks with large bags of what they told me was marshmallows gave me the vehicle, I had no driver license. I also found it strange that the officer was coming up the window with his gun drawn.

And that was when I noticed the tied up old lady in the back seat.

Anyway...

Where was I... lost my train of thought. Oh well, I guess what I'm trying to say is that I hate sauerkraut. If it involved my machine and it's well being i'd have waited 3 Days for a reply...Registryfix is a paid software that's better than regcure. See here: Myth #1: Registry Cleaners

That's what I wondered. Should I really, really trust microsoft customer service guys? Last time I called to get an software activation problem solved with microsoft, I was talking to some lady with an indian accent!!!Ok everyone has something bad to say about reg cleaning. But after all the comments can I assume I should just continue as normal as no problems seem to affect my system? Malware and Norton both come up clean and regcure just cleans a few COM/active x entries. And may be a few application paths. Oh and a few file/path references.doing a registry clean now and then is not a bad idea but you have to keep in mind that if something goes wrong with the registry, your computer may may start giving problems or errors. that is all that really is what's so bad with messing with the registry. I personally have registryfix and I do do some registry cleaning once or twice a month without hitches though...

get rid of regcure for sure and get on with life.

Solve : Lost Windows XP?

Answer»

I am using Windows XP PRO w SP3 on single hard disk. Yesterday I shutdown the windows properly.

But Today, after turning the system on, the error message "Error loading operating system" displayed on the screen.

When I go to repair the windows using Windows CD it does not detect my OLD OS.

So I prefer fresh installation of windows. During installation setup shows C drive as unformatted drive. Other drives are listed as correct INCLUDING Volume name.

Come to the point,

I don't delete the C drive or touch the hard disk partitions in earlier. I don't know how C drive comes become a unformatted drive.

These same problem also occurred in my friend system in past.
On both systems windows re-installed with data loss.

Can anyone know the reason of this problem? Share your idea with me.

Did you check all your cable connections, connecting the motherboard and the hard drive?@reddevilggg: I am able to access every drive data from hard disk except C (Windows) drive.
@joedavis: Windows has gone from C drive completely. Now that is unformatted drive like a drive after partition. So windows diagnostics not possible.

Thank you reddevilggg and joedavis. I think you are not correctly understand my problem and question. It sounds like the partition is corrupted. Try JoeDavis' suggestion and run SFC.perhaps CBSk is posting from another working computer but I don't know .... Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on APRIL 03, 2009, 07:04:50 AM

As per my knowledge, without operating system we can't go to Safe mode with Command Prompt or System Restore through F8.

Anyway THANKS to ALL. Now I will go to Re-install the Windows.
i am wondering if you got 2nd pc, and you can slave the hard drive there? If it can read the files if any still exist, you can try to salvage all you got there before all is lost if you got important files on.

I haven't yet heard of how a hard drive becomes an unformatted drive without you having deleted drive somehow (like through windows setup cd) but I don't know what's going on....-Boot from your windows xp installation disk
-when its done loading press "r"
-you should now be at a black screen that looks like the command prompt
-type "fixboot"
-press enter
-restart

Solve : XP Upgrade?

Answer»

Hi

Is there anyway that i can upgrade my laptop from windows ME to XP for free or do i have to purchase the upgrade ?

Many Thanks

MattYou have to buy it. Before you take this step, you should verify that your computer is capable of running Win XP. Can you tell us your hardware specs? What processor? How much memory? Size of hard drive and how much free space?

What make and model is your computer?Don't upgrade to xp it will cost a lot of money plus it makes most computers that run me really slow. I would only update if i had a 1gh prosser and a min of 256 mb of ram. But hay if you have about 100 dollars and the the speed go for it. But you will most likely have a bunch of missing drivers just a warning.
Hope this helps!!!I ran XP for a year with a AMD K6-2 350 Mhz and 32MB of RAM. (took some coaxing to get XP on there at all). Then 3 years after that with 512MB.

It certainly wasn't what I'd call a speedy experience, but coming from my 486 it was usable for VB6 so I was happy.

And then I Installed XP onto my NEW PC, since I had the disk- and reverted my old one to; well, nothing, I guess. Just a benchtest machine. has Windows NT 3.51 right now, I think. In 2003, I installed XP on a computer running a 600 MHz AMD Duron processor, with 384MB of memory and it ran fine.

QUOTE from: Dustinator on April 03, 2009, 08:39:13 AM

Obtaining drivers, or confirming their availability, before proceeding with this upgrade is a good idea. Windows will probably have drivers for many devices installed in your computer, but you may need to get some, or update certain drivers, after installing XP.

I also ran XP with 256MB of RAM for some months before doubling the RAM and didn't find it too painful. i thought windows xp needed at least 64 mb of ram present to be able to be installed?Quote from: BC_Programmer on April 03, 2009, 09:15:08 AM

Whew, that had to be an exercise in extreme patience. It's just unthinkable. Microsoft says:
"128 megabytes (MB) of RAM or HIGHER recommended (64 MB minimum supported; may limit performance and some features)". Everybody knows even those stated requirements are rock bottom minimum. So, how you actually used XP with 32MB is beyond my comprehension.

For all practical purposes, I'd consider 256MB the minimum acceptable amount of memory and 128MB the absolute minimum to even attempt to run Win XP.You may want to consider Win2K Pro on that ME machine...less stringent requirements...solid performance....and basically XP without the eye candy for the most part.I meant with good performance Heck my friend runs it on a 300mz and 64MB of ram but it is really slow.my dad's old laptop back in the day had 64mb of memory and it has windows xp on it..... I was sneaky. It was actually an upgrade from Windows 98, I think I ended up forcing it by installing a ram doubler to trick the installer.

then my first order of business was pretty much uninstalling all the services. I didn't have the INTERNET so that reduced the strain. You may want to go over this KB article before you make your decision. Upgrading
OSs' in laptops can be tricky since the installed OS is usually a particular build for that particular laptop.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q307153i'd check out the drivers and hardware to see if you XP has drivers for them so you can use. That's what I'd do first. Else, if you don't have drivers for XP due to older hardware then you're probably stuck with a computer that has nonfunctional parts because of that.

Solve : System restore folders?

Answer»

Did multiple restores on Windows XP professional before I got it to work again. Did defrag and noticed that I had more files than before. When defrag complete seemed that there were more files than when I started the defrag session.. Did a virus scan and definitely more files on the C drive. Went to System Volume Information on Local Disk C and saw batch of folders of the restores. Most were in blue font, the older ONES and a few were in black font, the LATEST one. Can I delete the blue font folders or will they go AWAY on their own?

ThanksIf you have a complete backup of the system you can safely delete them...

Solve : BLUE SCREEN..............?

Sometimes when I close down I get a plain blue screen with a fatal error warning. This has been happening for nearly a year. It does not seem to affect my computer.....any ideas why and how to cure IOT?
Thank you
Arenado you get a stop code? like 00000000000000xC2 something of that nature. Helps in telling us if its a BSOD blue screen of death and what it is if it is one. Depending on the code will help tell us what to do.Sorry Squall
My computer is a Dell Dimension3100
The blue screen message is: C000021A fatal system error /0XC0000005Navigate to: C:\Windows\Minidump folder.
If you see any .dmp FILES, zip all of them, and attach zipped file to your next reply.
I used to get the blue screen of death.

It was due to a new wireless USB thing i had bought to get the internet.

My advise it to try and remember what you may have bought, hardware or software wise, for the computer just before the blue screen of death appeared.

Sorry if this is no help xThat mite not be his case but. That must be a newer one, I use a book to run the code against it and it does mention what you put SINCE I dont want to memories them all.Next time you get a blue screen restart your PC and CHECK out what happened in Event Viewer.

Start>Run>Eventvwr.msc

If you double click on the SYSTEM Log, you will see the last event that possibly gave you the blue screen.

There should be errors and warnings that you can investigate to pinpoint the problem.

Solve : Corrupted JPG Photo, How to repair??

Answer»

Hope this is the right place to post. I went to get some photos from a recent trip off of the card (they had already been veiwed ETC but no one took them off the card yet) they all where fine but one was not working. I get errors when I try to open it everywhere but in some PROGRAMS I will see part of it, the rest is gray. The thumbnail is always fine. So after searching the web I found out it is a corrupted JPG which is possible to fix in some cases. Iv downloaded several demos & programs that claim to fix them but no luck. They simply turn the gray part another color BUT one did turn the gray part red & in the red there was a shadow of a couple parts of the picture that where missing. It was like the picture was showing up but the part missing had been cut in half and put on opposite sides.... So that makes me think somehow it is still possible to save this photo. Iv also heard some things about a Hex editor and I even downloaded one but have no idea what to do with it really sooo it doesn't help me.. Does anyone out there have any suggestions, Id really like to save this photo...

OS: MICROSOFT Windows XP Home Edition
CPU/Ram: 2.1 GHz / 447 MB
Manufacturer/Model: Hewlett-packard / Pl382aa-aba a706n

EDIT: I just tried another program (JPG Recovery Prof) the result was better I suppose but def. not repaired. There is still the color error where my pictures cuts of & turns gray but the part that is gray shows the rest of my picture but with a green tint effect...Plus their watermark is on it but it makes me feel like it may be possible to save my pic! Also if it is any help the ''watermark''also says..... Missing Pixels (448,568) - (751-575)
So the USB drive was pulled out whilst viewing a picture? NEVER a GOOD idea.

I don't think anything can be done to the corrupted file.
You may want to try a file-reovery program on the drive, but I don't think it will fix anything.

Do you not have backups anywhere else? Try Recuva....FREE.

Solve : Javascript problems?

Answer»

I have Windows XP SP3. Firefox browser, Thunderbird E-mail, Comodo firewall and Spybot S&D installed.
Recently I have not been able to view links to Javescript PICTURES on web pages.
I have Java and Javascript enabled in my browser and just upgraded to the latest Java 6.
The hour glass appears when | click a link but nothing further. This has only just happened. I think I had notification that a new version of Javascript was available, which I downloaded.
I have viewed the FAQ PAGE without success, any help please? It is not a great problem just annoying, especially as it was working fine a short while ago.
Thank you.Try to go to the earlier version of java that you are using and see what will happen.I had Java 5 installed and had the problem. I have now installed the updated Java 6 and the problem is still there. ( can't see how reverting to the older version will help) I am not sure if this is anything to do with the problem, I just thought I should say what changes I had tried. Thank you.Thanks. It SEEMS I may have had the problem for longer than I thought. I tried system restore to a date six weeks before and have the same problem. I think it must be Firefox because I can access the same links in IE with no problem.
Reluctant to try restoring any further back because of what I may loose ( I loose Yahoo toolbar for example)
Any other suggestions or from ANYBODY please.Java has absolutely positively nothing to do with JavaScript.

try Firefox Safe mode in the start menu, and see if the links work.Thanks.
I have decided to uninstall and then reinstall Firefox, as I now now that it is the browser problem. There is no problem with IE.Sounds to me, like an issue with a plugin. Of course reinstalling would restore the default plugins, I believe.Seems like un-installing is not quite that simple either.
The instructions I have is to remove Firefox from the "add remove programmes list" It is not even listed there, it looks like I have to delete folders relating to Firefox and this can be done as a complete clean

BC.
I have tried it in safe mode and the link works. Any more help please?

Failing that someone has pointed me in the direction of Revo uninstaller, so I might have to go down that route.

Final word: beef up the RAM to at least 512MB (1GB preferable), and post back.Quote
Cleaning/Optimising the Registry for a performance gains is an absolute myth...
I totally agree, and, if anyone wants to disagree, be prepared to provide a proof!
That registry cleaning BS starts getting on my nerves.

Let's put it this way....
The computer with clean registry will run 2 millisecond per hour faster, then a computer with dirty registry.
Whoever is able to notice the above difference, please step out.
On the other hand, if registry cleaning goes wrong, be prepared for clean reinstall.Keeping your registry clean should keep your computer of junk and that's all that does if anything more.

But the main problem is you have a 800mhz processor? Rally ? That's slow and Ram is slow too! It's like my dad's P3 at 750MHZ with 512mb of ram.

Well, the only thing you really can do is be sure you have enough ram and if you're using integrated graphics card, that's all right if you're just surfing web and writing word documents but if you are doing something like video watching, then GET a pci-e card if your computer can handle it.

:'(I recently lent out my hp laptop to my girlfriends sister over the weekend she had it for a day n a half when i got it back and i turned it on says operating system not found , what can i do to fix it ? is there a fix to this ?please Help thanksSounds tome like she destroyed your operating system. You are going to need to reinstall your operating system. She could downloaded a virus that wiped your hard drive. There is NOTHING you can do at this point, that I know of.Quote

There is nothing you can do at this point, that I know of.
But here is. You find the serial number and service number on the Laptop. You contact the tech support of the company giving the information. If the machine is still under warranty or has an extended service policy, they may provide you a CD that can recovery the system. Do not assure that have no interest. The pay more attention to the laptops because that is big business. They don't want people to know that laptops a re a headache. if you have a compaq computer for say, then you probably already have a restore system on pc can try recovery with. OTHERWISE get a recovery disk and at least for compaq pc's I know you have to pay for the recovery cd if you get if from the help line techs.Double click Here...

This is the Recovery Console for XP and use it to create a bootable CD...

Boot to the CD and after the Console loads fully at the command PROMPT type in fixboot and hit Enter...
Remove the CD and re-boot.
If this does not work repeat the procedure except this time type in fixmbr and hit Enter...
Again remove the CD and re-boot.I made the bootable cd already, i just dont UNDERSTAND the rest, when i turn the pc on, the Esc option part comes on to push f11 n all that but i looked n i cant figure it out if i dont push ANYTHING it goes to Programming system not found n it just repeats itself when i push keyz, please help me further its a little frustrating thanksIt sounds like it is still trying to boot the hard drive...
Hit the escape button when prompted which will enter the BIOS.
Under Advanced menu options there will be a boot device priority option.
Set CDROM or DVDROM as the first device and press F10 to "save options and Exit"
It should now boot to the CD you made...

NOTE: If you are unfamiliar with this procedure it's best left alone til you can find someone who has done it before...I already set the dvdrom as first device n saved it when i was looking for a way to restore it with the cd but it still wont work for me it goes right back to programming..... when it restarts i dont know whut to do??

They might do some damage if unintentionally deleted any of other files. I am not allowed to change any file attribute in the server to make things hidden & etc. Thanks in advance for your help.do you SHARE d:\report\ folder in the server?

if yes then, the code is something like this:

Solve : Outlook Express full???

Answer»

I run with windows XP...my outlook express says it is full and won't take any more e-mails....what do I need to do??What is the exact error message? It'd take *a lot* of e-mail to actually prevent outlook from getting any e-mail. I'm assuming that it's more likely that your Internet service provider e-mail box is actually full and not your outlook.

Additionally make SURE Outlook Express is not saving e-mail on the server. You can check this by following the below steps.

- In Outlook Express click Tools and then Accounts.
- In Internet Accounts double-click your e-mail server.
- Click the Advanced tab.
- Make sure leave a copy of messages on server is not checked.

About once a month I GET a message from my Internet Provider that my mailbox is over quota. The last time I talked to them they told me they were INCREASING their quota starting this month. So far, no more warnings.

Solve : Rotate Desktop. How??

Answer»

I found out how to rotate my DESKTOP in Windows XP.
But how come I NEVER saw t his before? Has it always been there?

Once in that position, it was hard to move the mouse.
Will it work like that in other versions of Windows?
It's not a Windows FEATURE, it's a feature of the Graphics Driver. So then it is not the system? It is a hardware feature?
Then if I get a new video card, it wail not be the same?

PRACTICALLY all recent video cards have some way to rotate the screen, how you do it varies between cards. On Intel cards (which I presume you're using from the screenshot) you can use the menu when you right click the desktop or Ctrl+Alt+Arrow Keys. Practically all ...Intel cards (which I presume you're using from the screenshot) you can use the menu when you right click the desktop or Ctrl+Alt+Arrow Keys. ....
In FACT, that used to work. I suspect that my system got an update for the Intel drivers and remove the Ctrl+Alt+Arrow Key feature. But I am not sure. Oh well. At least it is there if I need it.

The resins for unending it is to get a high resolution landscape screen shot view of a document I want to save. Often I see images on the Internet that I can not save, so I do a screenshot. Using rotate gives higher resolutions of portrait documents when turned 90 degrees.
That feature may also be available in the doc app you are using...Right. If I am use a PDF reader, I can rotate it.

Solve : Installing Win XP in DOS over Windows Vista - problems?

Answer»

I entered BIOS and CHANGED BOOT location to cd. I'm trying to install Xp on a brand new laptop and removing Vista...

But new problem... I get an error MESSAGE in the BIOS page once it starts to load XP... is this a BIOS setup issue?

"Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer.
Make sure your hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer, and that any disk-related configuration is correct.
Setup cannot continue."

Can I fix this issue with a BIOS option change?

is your drive perhaps ATTACHED to a SATA RAID controller? I've heard (never dealt with one personally) that you need a driver on a floppy to get XP to recognize any drives attached to these. It's a SATA all right but then so is my desktop and that installed XP no problem... ?

Very early on in the setup process you will see a message at the bottom of the screen "Press F6 to install SATA/RAID drivers".....press it and have your machine's SATA driver CD ready. Thanks,

I'll go and download some drivers...

If the machine came with Windows and all drivers for all hardware installed and no setup disks (why would they do that!) which piece of information do I search for drivers on? e.g. do I look for the Mainboard SATA drivers online, or that specific brand and model laptop SATA drivers?

You should get them from your MBoard manuf.'s site...Problem solved.

After searching for the Laptop specs, then the mainboard manufacturer, then the drivers, and pulling my hair out... COMING up dead every time...

Just thought I would log on with my solution... I entered the BIOS and just simply disabled SATA.

I would rather have XP and no SATA than Vista with SATA any day...

Thanks all for your posts... I may be back once XP tries to find all the new hardware...

ALso, HP have a great live online chat with a technician which solved this for me in about three minutes... start there. chad, from another of your posts on a related topic,if this XP installation is the same one as referred to in the other post (an xp program that was used and installed on another computer) your troubles are probably just beginning.truenorthyou are correct.

XP on the Presario c793vu does not have drivers for the following:

Ethernet Controller
PCI Device
SM Bus Controller
USB controller
unknown device 1
unknown device 2
video controller
video controller vga compatible

a nightmare!

Now I need to decide if I try to get around all these new problems... or just go back to Vista. And how do i go back to Vista when no installation disk comes with the new laptop? You need to contact Compaq and have them ship you a MBoard Driver installation CD.....
Until then it doesn't matter which OS you want to run you will continue to have issues.Quote from: patio on August 06, 2008, 08:55:03 PM

HP have finally given me a list of links to compatible drivers (why not put them on their website I ask).

Solve : Computer won't start...keeps looping during startup?

Answer»

Hi everyone! My parent's PC seems to be having some trouble. Usually I am able to troubleshoot it for them and GET it up and running, but this one seems to be giving me some problems. Apparently, at some point over the last few days, the computer froze completely. My mother was forced to do a hard reset on it. Now, when we try to restart the computer, it shows the motherboard screen, then gives you the boot option since Windows was not shut down properly, then starts to load Windows XP, but for a split second, it looks like the "blue screen of death" pops up, then it loops BACK to the very start of the boot up sequence.

I have tried booting into safe mode, but the same thing happens. At this point, I am kind of stuck. Here are the PC specs -

Windows XP
Intel Pentium 4 2.8 GHZ
512MB RAM
Nvidia GeForce 9600 GT video card

Thank you very much for any help.Reboot and tap the F8 (function) key continuously until it takes you to the advanced boot option screen. Select "disable restart on error" and reboot. Then post the entire contents of the blue screen error in your next post. Thanks - here is what popped up

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

Check to make sure any NEW hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need.

If problems continue, disable or remove and newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select startup options, and select Safe Mode.

Let it run to completion. For whatever reason, they seem to have LOST their windows CD. I am trying to find my own, and will let you know how it goes when I do. Thank you very much for the help so far!Sorry for the long delay, finally got a hold of a CD. I ran the recovery console, and ran chkdsk /r, then a line comes up and says "The volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems."

Any thoughts? The HDD seems to have gone South if chkdsk won't fix it...sorry 'bout your/their loss.I agree with patio - you should replace the hard drive. That's kind of what I figured too...thanks for the help guys. Any way of getting some of the files off the hard drive at all? I know there were pics and stuff on there that they probably WANT...3/11/17

I installed a new motherboard and processor and had this problem. Got a new motherboard, after checking power supply and finding it good. The computer would not start up. After much checking, and double-checking, I concluded the arc fault circuit breaker in my electrical panel was the culprit. Have had no problems since changing the circuit breaker to a regular one. Hope this helps. He hasn't been back for 4 years now...

Solve : Desktop Icons, start menu and toolbar not showing up!?

Answer»

Today I'm having a little trouble with my laptop. It started up fine, but only the desktop background loaded. The icons, start menu and toolbar were all MIA.

here's the BEST part of all though; I couldn't open task manager. On my laptop CTRL+ALT+DELETE makes a box pop up giving me the option of logging off, locking the computer, shutting down, retrieving the task manager, and changing my password. This box opened up completely fine! When I clicked task manager it didn't load at all.

Here's some information that might help you:

OS: Windows XP

I don't have any virus protection (heinous, right? ), and I've been getting a lot of pop ups. Everything I do - pop up! Even when I close the internet, there's a pop up. This is probably the problem.

PLEASE, PLEASE HELP!

Uuugh. I new I shouldn't have taken a computer without a CD drive, but it was free.
Thanks for your response! I'll look into figuring something out. At least you KNOW what's gonna be the very first program you'll install....hmmmmQuote from: Pommey on August 03, 2008, 08:34:43 PM

Solve : Activation problem?

Answer»

Hi all,

I have an old HP d/top Pavilion 500 series computer, [os: xp home 2002, CPU: Intel Pentium 4, 2.4 GHz, RAM: 256MB, HDD: WESTERN Digital, 40 GB]. I have had a lot of trouble with my xp which came installed with the computer. It has not been connected to the internet.

I found a site on the internet that OFFERED a free licensed xp home. I downloaded this onto my USB drive, then burned a disk from the USB on another computer and then uploaded the disk to my computer.

The computer requires that I activte. Unfortunately, I can't. I hired a guy at $50 to look at it for me and all he COULD find was a message stating "invalid disk".

I can get into the welcome screen. The screen shows two os's on my HDD. One is my original xp which requires me to enter my password and the other, the
invalid disk.

My original xp was already activated before I uploaded the invalid disk. The invalid disk isn't activated but is licensed according to the site.

How can I get into my computer and get rid of the invalid disk?

Can anyone help please?

You need to either find/get the APPROPRIATE Factory Restore disc for the system, or purchase a Windows XP License.

You might be able to do so from your original XP Installation. Look for an HP tool for factory restore images. in the start menu for example. It may require you to burn a CD.

There is no "Free License" to Windows XP Home. What you downloaded and installed was a pirated copy and that is why it will not activate. Quote

If you need access to the data in the meantime until you get the Windows XP Home fixed on this system, you could use LIVE Linux CD or DVD as a way to access files on hard drive; however 256MB RAM is really small these days and most distros these days suggest 1GB RAM, and wont work on any lesser than 768MB or 512MB RAM. You might find that you need to find an older Linux distro that supports running on 256MB RAM. 10 years ago when I was introduced to Knoppix I ran that on a system with 256MB RAM. RAM is pretty cheap these days for older DDR 266, 333, and 400Mhz RAM. However if this system will never be used online and is for offline purpose only then you can run it WITHOUT critical updates etc and SP0 or SP1a or SP2 etc and with just 256MB RAM if thats plenty for whatever you run on it. Other option is if you still have a valid original key tag on your computer is borrow an oem XP Home disc from someone who has one and install clean this way and use your key to activate. If you dont connect this to internet to activate you will have to phone it in and have a pen and paper ready to write down the groups of numbers to enter into computer to activate by phone.

No matter how you install XP "legally" its going to require an activation either connected to a network to do it that way or to call it in and manually enter a activation code.
