Solve : Compressed zip folder?

Answer»

When I would download files from gaming mod SITES they used to always save as a compressed zip FILE and open with windows explorer. I downloaded 7zip extractor to move the files into the game itself. However 7zip did not work, KEPT getting the cannot output file error. Anyway now all the files from the gaming site are saved as 7z files and will not open with anything. Is there a way to change them back to compressed zip folders, and KEEP it that way for the future.

Thanks AlotI don't think their file extension changed. I think the file association changed, which is good.
That means 7-Zip is opening the compressed archive files.

When you open them, what happens? It says Windows cannot open this file. They used to open with windows explorer, and 7-zip when 7-zip worked.Sounds like you are a victim of bad game mods...
If 7Zip won't handle them then their EITHER corrupt or poorly compiled...

Welcome to the CH forums.

Describe your computer and the beep sequence.

Please read this..

beep beep beep beep then stop 1 s beep beep beep beep A very nice description of your computer. See if the beep code you are getting fits any of these, if you'd posted details of your computer we might have been able to be more specific on any help/advice we can provide.

Perhaps you'd better read this again.

Solve : system processes and system applications?

Answer»

hi friends,
when we open run any application like Web Browser, MS Word, Winamp etc, then why a processes associated with that always starts as we can see this on task manager->processes.

what is the relation between an application and it's associated process?
An application is what's being run by the user and a process is the executing program for that application. The examples you give are fairly simple ones but the application and process names can be different. The Application is just a name, usually selected by the PROGRAMMER, to identify what is running.

Have a look at the top of the screen, you will find an application name (btw I'm using Firefox for this example), it should say "SYSTEM processes and system applications - MOZILLA Firefox". Now hit Alt+Ctrl+Del to open WINDOWS Task Manager and you should find the same thing in Applications. Right CLICK on it then click "Go to Process" and you should be taken to Firefox.exe in Processes.

So the Application is "system processes and ....etc" while the program being used in that application is Firefox.exe

Some applications seem to have no link whatsoever to the running process. One example is a small program named ipcountrylookup.exe while the application name is Project1.

Hope the above helps.

Solve : Computer wont start??????? HELP WOULD BE APRECIATED?

Answer»

Ok so i was playing an online game called counter strike source. well the screen started turning green had green dots in the FORM of lines. looking very similar to the matrix. so i exited out of the game and it was on the desktop. well i restarted the computer and it was still there.(even on the windows LOAD-up PAGE) well after i restarted it later on the dots werent there but then windows wouldnt load. you KNOW usually it takes about 7 or 8 seconds for it to load where the windows symbol and progress bar is. well it would only load for like 2 seconds and the page would do kind of a weird movement. as if it was a tv being shut of. would skitch to the side and shut off. well then the monitors would turn off and back on where the windows log-in is suppose to be. but it never shows up. just stays blue. I left the computer off through the night and now it like doesnt hold a charge...hard to explain if i leave it off for a while it will start but if i start it and try and restart it then the fans spin for a second then it just shuts off. if anyone has any ideas or suggestions please let me know. thank you very much for your help. This looks like a double (triple?) post on the same subject. You haven't responded to the query here. Please continue there.

Solve : Listening to audio on the web?

Answer»

Every time I try to listen to a radio station or an AUDIO clip from Amazon, the stream KEEPS breaking down after just a few seconds, then it tries to re-buffer, then it resumes for another few seconds, etc.
Now I do have a dial-up system and I realize that any streaming that I try to get MAY be compromised but I never had this much of a problem until I UPGRADED my OS to XP some months back.
Any advice will be greatly applauded!

Solve : Volume serial number calculation.?

Answer»

Win XP Home SP.3

I'd like to know how the volume serial number is calculated/allocated during a format and whether the user can influence the calculation/allocation in any way.

ThanksThe serial number is a 32-bit number determined by the date and TIME on the current computer at the time of a disk's formatting. The low order 16-bit word is calculated by TAKING the month and day value and converting them to hexadecimal. The number of seconds and 100ths of seconds are also converted to hexadecimal and added to month & day value. The high order word is calculated by taking the HOURS & minutes value and converting them to hexadecimal. This is then added to the hexadecimal value of the year.

Here is a diagram showing how the additions were done that resulted in a Volume Serial of 2514-1df4

I suppose you could try to set your system date to produce the desired number, and do the format at just the right time to catch the 100ths of seconds, but there are LOTS of utilities out there to change a volume serial number. It involves direct disk editing, so I'd back up all your data first. Google for "Volume Serial Number Editor" for example.

It is not possible to decode the volume serial number and verify the format date/time unless you have some of the information already. If you know the year the disk was formatted, it is then possible to calculate the time. Calculating the date is a little more difficult as you need the exact seconds and 100ths of a second and vice versa. If you know the date, then it is possible to calculate the format time.

Thank you Dias, I had thought that the date/time would be involved, I already use a third-party utility to change vol ser numbers..

Only surprise is that you haven't come back with a VB script or Batch script to answer my query. LOL the one time I needed to change a disk serial, I resorted to Norton Disk Edit.

Boy was I surprised that I didn't manage to screw something up terribly... Although I learned a bit about the MBR and so forth that day.

Solve : New computer...won't boot!?

Answer»

Just bought a new Acer X1700...was working fine until yesterday. I was in the middle of loading some pictures when it froze...turned it off, waited a few minutes and turned it back on...and it just went to a BLACK screen...tried unplugging the power cord and holding the power button down for 30 seconds and that brings me to a screen that says to EITHER boot in normal mode or something else that is "recommended", which I did and still just get a black screen.well, try this.

When booting up keep pressing F8 until a screen pops up listing many different THINGS. One should be in the criteria of, "Last known good configuration" go up to that and press enter. Then try rebooting, if that doesn't work, please let me know.I get a beep then back to the screen that says Acer on it and on the bottom it says DEL for the BIOS and F12 for the boot menu...and when I try to get into them I get no response.have you tried letting it go past that..?Take it back.Of course...I ended up having to take it back to Best Buy. The person there hooked it up to their MACHINE and found that something was defective, I don't know exactly what it was. So, I got a new tower and we'll see how this one works. Thanks for everyone's in-put THOUGH. Good job

Solve : Blue screen and mouse arrow at boot up?

Answer»

I recently installed a PC game (Spore) on the comp and it made the comp run
buggy immediately after it was installed, particularly keeping us from
restarting the computer most of the time (the comp WOULD either restart at
splash screen or I would have to select "Load with last workable
configurations")

Since then the comp crashed today and suddenly the comp just continuously
restarted at the Windows splash screen and wouldn't give me the Load with
Last... option. So I restarted trying to open with DOS mode to do a chkdsk (I
think I clicked F7 or F8 I think at the load screen) and I think it ASKED me
what my primary hard drive was. It game me an option of a named drive and
"Other." I picked the named one.

Now my current problem: Upon turning the comp on, the comp only loads a blue
screen and the mouse and that's it. I have found through trial and error that
I can press F2 during the load screen to bring up BIOS and F11 to bring up
this whole "what's in the A: drive" thing (I think it's called the "Setup"
screen).

Any help would be appreciated, and I'll try to answer any questions or
specifics if it helps. I have Windows XP, but I'm writing this on a friend's
PC cuz mine won't do anything but show blue and the mouse. I feel like I have
somehow made a secondary hard drive my primary or something, I dunno. Please
help, I'm hopeless and afraid I'm just making things worst
also, I tried to bring up the recovery console but it freezes at the mup.sysDoes the blue screen say anything?no it is blank. Just a sky blue screen and a mouse pointer so we no its not a BSOD for the most part. More help will be along soon. The only change to the problem is that if I try to get into system restore it just freezes and says Reading (some number) KB on 0 bud or something like that. The same thing happens if I just try to run Windows using the Windows XP disc1. If you have Windows CD, follow the steps from here: http://icrontic.com/articles/repair_windows_xp

2. If you don't have Windows CD...
DOWNLOAD Windows Recovery Console: http://www.thecomputerparamedic.com/files/rc.iso
Download, and install free Imgburn: http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download
Using Imgburn, burn rc.iso to a CD.
Boot to the CD...let it finish loading.
When the "Welcome to Setup" screen APPEARS, press R to start the Recovery Console.
Then, follow the steps from here: http://icrontic.com/articles/repair_windows_xp, starting below this picture on page 1:
That's one of the main problems, it freezes as soon as I get to that screen and press R for recovery console. Also, it freezes and says the same thing if I press to Enter to set up XP.

I don't have the screen in front of me, but it says something like Reading (Some number) KB on 0 bud or something like that1. Run Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool: http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/Windows-Memory-Diagnostic-Tool-t177564.html
2. Run hard drive diagnostics: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287what information exactly do you need from the first diagnostic? Because basicly upon booting with the DISC there is always one active and everything fails. Stride38 has suceeded, one other is always active, but everything else fails

As far as the second diagnostic, I don't know for the life of me which one to download because I don't know what my hard drive manufacterer is. I researched online for help and I have a Sony Vaio but I have read that manufacterers can differ even among same modelsLet's stay with RAM testing for now.
Quote

but everything else fails
What exactly fails? How many passes did you go through?I let it run through 4 "extended tests" full passes. The fourth pass has the following results:

Test Cache
MATS+ On Failed
INVC On Failed
LRAND On Failed
Stride6 On Failed
WMATS+ On Failed
WINCVC On Failed
MATS+ Off Failed
Stride38 On Succeeded
WStride-6 On Failed
ERAND On Failed

Demand a Media Center CD from the manufacturer of your machine...
It's been AWHILE so you will have to make some polite noise...but don't quit easy and you'll get what you NEED...

Best of Luck.Ok, ill do that n let you know what they say.. hey is it POSSIBLE to get a new hard drive n back up my OLD one after i get the windows installed?like copy all the data from your old HD to your new then Yes.

you would have to do the Slave Technique that Patio described or you could try a USB Enclosure, but the Slave Idea is better. You would want to do this BEFORE you install Windows...a clean install wipes out everything.yeah, i mean like take the old one out n put a new one in so that my computer cld run after the install then back it up. because i dont have another computer to back it up with atm..i have one more question, do i have to back up my hard drive to a cd or can i back it up directly to an external hard drive?either.Ok cool. also i finally found out what he put in. the mb is a- Jetway JM26T4 AM2 GeForce 6100 Micro ATX AMD. n the processor is a- AMD Sempron LE-1250 Sparta 2.2GHz 512kb L2 cache socket AM2 45W Single-Core. are those good or bad? yay theyre going to send the disk for 25 bucks, just thought id let you guys know.. thanks for all of your help! It just goes to a black blank screen and hangs.Try this: http://icrontic.com/articles/repair_windows_xpHey, checked out the link you posted I did all the steps. Try Windows repair: http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/How-to-repair-Windows-XP-t138.htmlI checked out the other link you send me. No installation were found so I guess that means that my data or partition on my drive is too corrupted. What can I do next or do I need a new hard drive. Check, if BIOS sees the drive.Yes. BIOS sees the drive.Do you have any important data there?

RUN HD diagnostic: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287No. It has a new win xp pro installation. I will give it a try. Thanks for your help. I will continue to post my FINDINGS tomorrow. Buy.No problem

Solve : Command line switches for Outlook 2007?

Answer»

Hello-
I'm wondering if there exists a SWITCH for bringing up a particular Contact in OUTLOOK 2007 from the command line?
I've visited http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook/HP012185891033.aspx and cannot SEE anything that might work.
The following command " Outlook.exe/select outlook:contacts" will bring up all the Contacts in Outlook but
I want to display a particular contact.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks.Just a guess.

Copy the contact of interest into anew list. Let it be the only item in the new list. Then use a witch that will open just that contact file.

Does that sound like what you want?
Interesting Idea..

Solve : CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME??? PROBLEM WITH XP?

Answer» OK i play an online game counter strike. well as i was playing green dots started to appear all over the screen. i thought it was maybe the game. well i exited out and it was still on my screen. so i restart and the same thing happens. so i turn the comp off and 30 minutes later i went back and turned it on. well right when the bar on the progress bar for XP loading reaches the end point my screen goes black(it actually shuts off). and then the blue screen comes up where the log in is suppose to be. and thats all it does. i installed a new windows on a different HARD drive and it does the same thing. what can i try? what could have CAUSED this? can someone please help me? It sounds to me like it could be your monitor or graphics card. Could you possibly try using another monitor? Also, it could be the video card. Try shutting your computer off for about 10 minutes to cool things down. If not that, open the case, if a desktop computer, and see if there is dust clogging the fans or sockets, ect..

I have dual monitors, my brother set them up. and the fans are clean. Can you boot to Windows at all?
Did you try Safe Mode?yes i tried safe mode. and now the computer is having trouble starting. when i turn it on the monitor nor the keyboard will com on.Even in Safe Mode?no...the monitor wont turn now. at all its very odd. and i even just hooked up a diff motherboard and the same thing happened. the monitor wont turn on. IVE tried 2 diff monitors. they both work fine. for my newer mobo it has a external gpu. and the older mobo that is hooked up now has on-board gpu. ive tried the external and the on-board. the monitor just wont turn on. maybe its 2 faulty gpu's. but that would be odd. im so confused and ive been working on this for 12 hours straight. computers can be frustrating.Ok, i hooked up another mobo. not as good of a processor and not as much ram but the monitor turned on and im installing windows right now. so its not the video card....i still have no idea what to try. any other ideas anyone?

Solve : Raid Array Problem?

Answer»

I have a hard drive that was set up in a Raid 1 (CLONE) set up. Something went bad and the computer would not boot. ( This was a year ago)
I put one of the drives on the shelf, The other I reformatted to use the computer again. No problems with that computer since.

The drive sitting on the shelf has some data files that I was just asked to reserect from the dead. The hard drive has about 65Gig of data files and I can not ACCESS them. The raid partion has been erased or I can not see it.

When I put the drive in a computer it tells me I have 235 Gig of usable space. Makes me THINK the data is still there. A professional data recovery service was way too much money for the data on the disk.

Any ideas on how to access the data on this drive?

Solve : Updating to windows XP??????

Answer»

I currently am running windows 98SE. I have a windows XP upgrade disc that I would like to install.I have some programs that come up incapatable and some that say they may not run after the upgrade.
How or when do I do the new programs?Do I go to a upgrade before installing and if so do I say windows XP even though I still am running 98.
My cd rom proram is out dated and needs upgrading too if I install XP.When Should I upgrade it?I can't find the answers anywhere. Please, post some computer info:
- processor type, amount of RAM (hold Windows logo key, hit Pause/Break key)
- hard drive size (open "My Computer", right click on hard drive letter, click "Properties")
so we can see, if it's capable to run XP.
I have verified already ,but will post.
intel celeron .......667MHZ
32 KB primary memory CACHE
128kb secondary memory cache
SDRAM....100MHZ unbuffered DIMM 1.0 compliant
Maximum.....512MB ......64 MB installed ,but I will be upgrading
Hard Drive 15GB with 13.35 free space
Fat32
Conexant SoftK 56 PCI modem
Intel{R} 810 chipset DRIVER 4.11.01.2537
BIOS Phoenix Tech.LTD 1.12

The above computer won't run XP.
It may be crawling, but you're not gonna be happy.
Processor is really slow, and you need at least 512MB of RAM.Maybe I will just install some memory. But I would really like an answer if anyone knows. When do you install the update for programs and drivers. Before installation or after? When asked for my system do I say 98 or should I download for XP after installing XP.
Broni ..I don't know a whole lot about computors but according to the imfo on the XP I have more then enough system to run XP.I am confused why everyone KEEPS saying I do not.Well, that's probably because we spent years around computers.
If your references regarding XP requirements come from Micro$oft site, they simply lie.
You need to listen to us, because we know.Well, actually, you only need 128mb of ram to run xp. I have a laptop that has a 500mhz intel cpu, 128mb ram. Doesn't seem very slow. Just can't do too much.Stop giving him false hope...it's a waste of time to run XP on 128Mg of RAM...unless you like the hourglass icon.

Solve : Windows Booting Up over and over?

Answer»

Hi all

I've looked high and low for the answer to solve this but no luck at all.

My computer comes up with this error when i SWITCH it on:

We apologise for the inconvenience but WINDOWS did not start successfully a recent hardware or software change might have caused this.

If your computer stopped responding restarted unexpectedly or was AUTOMATICALLY shut down to protect your files and folders choose last know good configuration to revert to the most recent setting that worked.

If a previous start up ATTEMPT was interrupted due to a power failure of coz power or reset button was pressed or if you aren’t sure what caused the problem choose start windows normally

Safe mode
Safe mode with networking
Safe mode with command prompt
Last know good configuration your most recent setting
Start windows normally.

I have tried selecting each option but then the screen just keeps reappearing and windows never actually boots up. can anyone suggest a solution?

many thanks

Do you have Windows XP CD?
Any recent changes to the computer (hardware/software)?Thank you for your reply. No recent software or hardware changes. I just shut down as normal and now this screen keeps appearing. I could probably lay my hands on the disk. Let me know, when you got it.ok ill will do thanks.I have the cd, whats the next step?? thanks Follow the steps from here: http://icrontic.com/articles/repair_windows_xp

Says where? I assume, you're talking about missing hard drive space, correct?
How big HD, how much free space?
Hi Broni- I am the one with the 51.7 GB HD and now I am down to 35.4. It tells me that when I go into my computer and click on the icon for local disk C

I cannot download SP3 it won’t complete and it has to back out the files, I have tried now about a dozen times… AND I can’t download flash player either. SO I can’t do my job because I need flash player… I was the one that had to reformat due to a BAD virus… that I thought I had gotten rid of, but the memory are still being gobbled up by something! I also need to re-seat my RAM… my husband did not print out the PDF so I can walk myself through it yet. If it is not a virus issue then is it an OS problem? They tell me it looks clean after reading my logs. I updated all of the Java software as instructed, and I had SP2 already installed. My laptop is a Gateway so I also have 'big fix' that tells me when I have to install patches for security reasons as well. I am at a total loss, If it is not viral then what else could it be? I know that tracking cookies are not harmful, but maybe there is something so deeply embedded that the virus software can’t see it?
OK. You have THREE threads going about very same issue. I'm not ABLE to FOLLOW. I'm sorry.I am sorry, I was told to start a new thread when I ran the scans... so I did. And the other two threads were consolidated into one by the admin... and this thread was moved to the Microsoft Windows forum. I am trying to do what I am asked... but I guess that I am just confused as to how to use this system... it IS my first time. please let me know what I need to do to help the situation and I will do it.

Solve : Computer login help!?

Answer»

hi,

i'm having a major problem with my computer; it will log me out immediately after i log in. it wont even log me in in SAFE mode. i have tried a LOT of things to fix it, but nothing seems to be working.

can anyone help?1. If you have Windows CD, follow the steps from here: http://icrontic.com/articles/repair_windows_xp

2. If you don't have Windows CD...
Download Windows Recovery Console: http://www.thecomputerparamedic.com/files/rc.iso
Download, and install free Imgburn: http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download
Using Imgburn, burn rc.iso to a CD.
Boot to the CD...let it finish loading.
When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.
Then, follow the steps from here: http://icrontic.com/articles/repair_windows_xp, STARTING below this picture on page 1:

i tried to write the file on the CD but this popped up in the middle of the process and stopped it.

Try to create the CD on another computer.check the file size as well. not sure why it happened but the first TIME i downloaded the .iso it was only 266kb then after trying to burn it the burning software i used stated the file was too small to validate. after re-downloading the file it was 7.35Mb which burnt finei'm still a little lost. do i write, build, or burn the file to the cd?wait... i found out what i was doing wrong.

thanks! it worked!Do you mean, you created the CD successfully, or you FIXED the problem?

Solve : Right Clicking A Folder Freezes Computer?

Answer»

It seemed to happen just out of the blue...when I went to rename a couple of music folders my computer freezes up, then have to use Task Manager to end the process or restart the computer. I can right click system folders (My Computer, My Documents) and the desktop as well and it seems to work, but any folder that I've made will freeze the computer when it is right clicked.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I did do a system restore to a time before this as well a a ERUNT registry backup and still have the same problem. Avira SCAN quarantined a couple of things also.
If I don't get back to anyones reply right away it's because I've been up all night playing with this...will check when I wake up.

Thanks again.
Windows XP SP3Hi Buddy

Now it doesn't hurt to state the obvious!

Is your XP up to date with automatic updates etc?

If you have done a system restore have you reinstalled any drivers that may be required for your mouse?

Have you checked the mouse manufacturers website to see if they have updated drivers for SP3.

Hope this HELPS.

TechnowarriorHey, thanks but I restored to just before this happened and like I mentioned I can right click any other folder except ones that I've made myself and everything works fine. This leads me to believe it is nothing to do with the mouse, just to make sure the mouse drivers are fine anyway. All updates are good too.Sounds like it's an overly large folder...
Try ORGANISING it into smaller sub-folders if possible...I don't think that is the problem....it is any folder, even if I create a new folder on the desktop, leave it empty, then try to delete it, or rename it. Do you think it could be some kind of infection. Avira did pick up something in the System Volume Information (I'm assuming system restore)? Maybe something got in and already did the damage. Was also wondering if SFC /Scannow would help if some operating files got messed up? Or should I post my logs in the virus section before I try anything else?
Sorry for all the questions...been up pretty much all night trying to figure this ^%& thing out.
Thanks. The Virus and Spyware section would be my next visit if i were you...
Be patient...they're kinda buried right now.You can at least...

Install, and run it.
Post HijackTHis log. Thanks Patio & Broni...Will post the logs in the virus section as soon as possible...I'm still kind of working & have a delivery to make in case I don't respond right away.

If it helps...I still can right click and open zip files and the task bar, start menu etc.....just not any file that I've created???Have posted my logs under viruses & spyware...could use some help. Thanks.Someone will be along shortly...be patient.

Solve : erase hard drive?

Answer»

Had crash of xp home edition. tried to install win xp pro over it. i can get the xp pro system up, but only after strange pathways. no way to enter dos system to get CLEAN use of it. i've tried several free downloads to erase the disk entirely to do a clean install of xp pro, but none work (access denied)/ want to erase disk entirely and do a clean install of xp pro. I also have xp pro upgrade. any help out there?Do you have the Windows XP Professional CD?yes. basic , no patches. do have xppro upgrade, though. With the over install of home edition, i have to boot through he, then i get pro...works fine when up, but not right with booting process. I've been trying to get the CMOS Utility setup data for the computer, which is a HP 753.I'm sorry but....

Quote

yes. basic , no patches. do have xppro upgrade, though.
Yes to what?
Basic what?
Patches for what?
Does the Disc say XP Pro Upgrade Disc?

Quote
With the over install of home edition, i have to boot through he, then i get pro.
Boot through what? What's 'he'?
What's Home edition?umm.. computer came with xp home edition installed. crashed. couldn't revive, so tried to overinstall with xp pro. now when i try to boot i get 'boot disk error, insert boot disk and press enter'. playing with this gives me a choice of booting with xp pro or xp home (he = home edition) (xp pro = professional edition). if choose xp pro get original error. if choose home edition (he) get booted ok, but xp pro opens and runs ok. restart works ok to get back to xp pro. turn off and restart gets original error.

I've downloaded boot disks for both home and pro, but...

while xp is running, I get command prompt and try to reformat the hard drive in preparation for reinstall of xp from legit disk. error saying all variations of format c: , and format c: /s, etc not recognizable.

computer is HP 700; 4 years old. i've downloaded two programs saying they will do a hard disk erase and reformat for xp pro reinstall, but they are denied access to system.

I want to clean erase and START over with my new win xp pro disk and win xp pro upgrade disk if it is needed.Get. Put. Set. Boot. What?

Get in a HDD that was formatted on another machine.
Put in the HP.
Set the BIOS to first boot from CD.
Boot from CD.
What exactly does it say?

use a seperator reformatter or do it in the os you want to have installed on the HD. In other words when you go to install it, it will allow you to remove whats on the drive. The reason for the dual boot is cause you DIDNT do this.thanks for the advice. I finally found a program that did completely erase the hard disk. I then installed xp pro. restart WORKED. everything good until I turned it off and tried to reboot from a cold start. got error 'boot disk failure, etc' . nothing worked until I hit Alt-Ctrl-Del, then it continued to boot and run perfectly!

I disconnected and reconnected the ide cables, etc. no change. did 'reset defaults' at the BIOS site. no change.

?I'm thinking....Okay, as long as you're happy, we're happy.

It's possible something went wrong with the bootloader. He changed something and
he does not know
what he changed
but it works somehow.

So everybody is HAPPY

mite be what he used to format the drives happened to me.the drive isn't spinning up fast enough. That WOULD be the likely cause.

mite be what he used to format the drives happened to me.
doubtful. a boot sector that isn't written correctly won't boot regardless of the number of times the PC is restarted; a correct boot sector will fail to boot the first time if the HD doesn't spin up fast enough, and succeed on subsequent attempts.

This could mean the drive is failing... however, I would suspect the power supply first and attempt t o use a separate Molex connector and see if that helps. Of course- if it does, that means a New power supply should be considered.I didnt see that, I know that when I first got my sata drive I used maxblast 4 an ran into this kind of issue an difficulty then I got a copy of 5 from the near by reapair shop an its worked since.Quote from: squall_01 on January 26, 2009, 11:08:01 AM

Solve : To instruct computer to start a program.?

Answer»

Hello

I am downloading 4.5 GB file (Mandriva linux os) using uTorrent( a downloadmanager).
My platform is Windows XP.
After a night of nonstop effort I downloaded only 27% of the file.
How can I instruct my computer to start running uTorrent whenever
the computer is started?
Hope you can understand my question.

Cheers.
PrasadPersonally, I don't have Utorrent installed, but there should be an option to have it start with Windows. Look in the program's PREFERENCES. There is no option in preferences to start the program
along with the Windows.
I herd there are SETTINGS in windows to do it. But don't
know where.Anybody familiar with windows settings, please
help me.

Try adding it to the startup folder.

Create a shortcut to Utorrent in this folder:

what's wrong with the "start uTorrent on System Startup" option?
That would work as well.....

Sounds like dial-up...I know there is options in utorrent to shutdown the program and im pretty sure that it would have options to start it up in options, do have it on this computer currently... if you click on start and click run you can type in msconfig to get the startup services for your computer in which you ENABLE and DISABLE them from starting up at windows start up.. Yes. There is option to set utorrent to start when
os starts. UTorrent-> Options->Preferences->General->start utorrent on systemstartup.
I also coppied uTorrenticon in "C:\Documents and Settings\%username\Start Menu\Programs\Startup".
Thankyou very much.

If %TRY%==1 echo DNS restart SUCCESSFUL > % SCSFULDIR %
If %TRY%==2 echo DNS restart RECOVERED >> %DNSLOG%

:END_UPDATE

The idea to add the successful. log is to create another batch file to run in unification and check for a file in the path. If the file is missing then we need to trigger an alert so total there are 3 instances of alert.

I need the syntax to create the batch file which will look for the file successful.log and if not exist send the net send command to the list of ppl identified by their login accounts
Code: [Select]if not exist %SCSFULDIR% net send user "message text"

Replace user and "message text" as appropriate. You can also use the msg command if you prefer.

Not sure why you need the exist test. Does not ENTERING STOP_ERROR or RESTART_ERROR indicate an error?

Good luck. I tried using netsend but it checks for name resolution and is not able to resolve the user. It only recognizes user LOGGED on to the machine. Though net send with machine name is possible. the exist command is an error indication but it doenst send any alert. this file is being run on a remote server so i dont monitor the machine.

Just want to verify if error level 1 is correct command? and what does the "copy %BOOT%\*.* %PRDDIR% >nul" do?

Solve : My dads computer is a failure?

Answer»

My dad has a computer, windows xp SP2, 512ram, 2.5ghz processor. For the five months or so it would completely fail, need to have everything pulled out of it abd put back into it, and then it would work again for another month or so. Today it failed again, and I pulled stuff out and put stuff back in again and it didn't go anymore. Dad has work on his HDD, so I switched it to one of our other computers, 256 ram, I forget the processor, and now? It just restarts, again and again, and each time it says "windows failed to start up on the previous load" or some such thing and offers a set of OPTIONS. I tried safe mode, that printed a whole load of what appeared to be commands (along the lines of "partition(0) multi(some number) [some other stuff] C:\Windows\somefolder\somefile.sys")
And then it restarted again.

Any IDEAS?Ok, looking at it some more, it says it could be because of a "recent hardware or software change."
Well, I'd say putting the HDD as the master in another computer would be the former of those two options. Also, in safe mode the lines look more like:

[name](number)[name](number)[name](number)[name](number)\WINDOWS\DRIVERS\name.sysIt USED to be an acer computer, and its an acer hdd, and now its on a compaq motherboard. Would this cause conflicts?Quote from: Bones92 on January 26, 2009, 01:08:30 AM

Re-seating components and replugging might FIX the problem and you can test your ram using Memtest86 from http://www.memtest86.com/ - download the BOOTABLE ISO & burn to cd.

Please give a few details of your system - see here, it's very hard to provide guidance without some info.

I just installed a new harddrive onto my COMPUTER and i was wondering is there a way to move files without a copy leftover. Like i wanna move file a from harddrive one to harddrive two but whenever i do it just makes a copy of file a on harddrive two. I want it to just move the file without the copy. Is there a way to do this? I know i could just cut the file and move it but i wanted to just drag and drop.
Thank in advance =]Open Windows Explorer twice, place them side by side and click and drag from one HD to the other.1. SOMETIMES you just have to roll up your sleeves and work the problem. There's the "Help and Support" function provided with... What version of Windows are you using?

Start -> Help and Support -> type "move files" in the "Search" text BOX and hit Enter.

2. Or... Hold right mouse key down as you drag file or folder from old logical DRIVE to new logical drive. Release key when you've positioned mouse cursor at drive or folder you want to move to. Context menu will appear giving option to "copy", "move", or "CREATE shortcut to".

3. Or... You could use "move" command within a "Command Prompt" window.
type "help move" at command prompt for syntax and instructions.thanks for the help guys i'm using windows xp pro ill look into the help thing

Solve : Me system - "cannot connect,", IE & restore blank window?

Answer»

Is this LIKELY a malware/virus problem or has
some system program become corrupted?

I've tried to fix this for over a month, but I'm stuck
and there has been no response to an earlier
request for help.

Mostly the computer seems normal.

Problems appeared suddenly after RESTART:

Inability to connect to internet with
Firefox 2.0.0.20. "cannot connect" message
IE 6.0 blank window, mostly no response

Other symptoms of problems include:
System Restore (blank screen)
Restore from Protected start no change
Adaptic Create CD - frozen window
ipconfig - Black window flashes and closes
ping - "Transmit FAILED" Error code 10091
Computer not identified on home network

Direct CD appears to work so I can backup files to CD.

No problems identified with Spybot or Avast
Scan Disk found file fragments.

Dell Dimension 4100 Pentium III with 512 MB RAM
Windows Me 4.9.3
3Com Etherlink 10/100 (3C905C-TX) V.120
(Device Manager SAYS "working properly"
reloaded original driver - no change))

Thanks for any help
RayMIn Device Manager, are there any Yellow Question or Exclamation marks?

What Windows OS?

When did it start?

What happens when you open Command Prompt, then type ipconfig and press Enter?does this problem occur during or after restore and have you had any driver popup notification (different monitor)?Thank you for your REPLIES. I bit the bullet and reinstalled Windows from the distribution diskette and everything works. It must have been a corrupted system file.

Answer»

Hello all,

I am hoping that someone can HELP me out. I am trying to view some photos that I have saved to CD, HOWEVER I am getting an error message"the CD Rom drive is currently open. Does anybody know how I can fix this problem so I can view my photos?

Thanks,

Jim

I OS is Windows XP Home SP3Did you try the CD on another computer?Broni,

Yes I did. I get the same message. I know the disks work, because I have viewed them in the past.Well, if CD doesn't work on two computers, then there is something wrong with the CD.I have tried several of them..............at least 5. I can't believe they are all badThis may be because the CD's were not finalised when they were burned...
DLoad the FREE edition of IsoBuster which will ALLOW you to view/extract the files for burning over properly...These are the disks that were provided by the company that printed the pictures. I have viewed the disks several times. You have to realize, that CD don't last forever.
Are you sure about this message: the CD Rom drive is currently open, because I've never seen a message like this before.Broni,

Yes that is the message I am getting. As far as the disks not lasting forever.......I agree, however; these are only a few MONTHS oldTry some of these tools: http://www.raymond.cc/blog/archives/2008/01/24/top-10-free-data-recovery-software/
Thanks Broni,

I will GIVE it a look!
