Solve : Vista Home - to Win xp Assistance?

Answer»

Hi.

Some three weeks ago I purchased a new Dell Aspire 5315 Laptop. It has Windows Vista Basic installed.

I do not like Vista at all it is a resource hog and the computer is quite slow. So I decided to REVERT to Win XP.

I insterted my "real" XP disk and now all I can get on the screen is NTLDR is MISSING Press CNTRL+ALT+DEL to restart.

I have checked The Boot setting & it is correct. I have also tried using Microscope, a utilities disk, other versions of windows and Vista borrowed from a friend who has a computer shop.

I even tried to get a fix for this by WAY of downloading something from the internet (http://www.tinyempire.com/notes/ntldrismissing.htm) using a pen drive on my other Laptop, I then installed it on my pen drive. When I rebooted my FS Laptop it had taken out the NTLDR on this Laptop also. I have had to use the recovery disk that came with my Fujitsu Siemens and start from afresh with a new installation.

Meanwhile my Dell is still not working. I was given no recovery disk with my Dell and I think that I may probably need it. The problem is I purchased it in Spain and I am now back in the UK.

Any idea's or help would be appreciated.

What do you mean your "real" XP disc? Is it real or not? Does it have a holographic surface and say MICROSOFT on it?Apologies. It is an OEM disc, not a copy. The boot settings should be CDRom first if you are trying to do a Restore from an OEM CD....
WARNING: You realise after this all your data will be gone correct ? ?Thanks patio. The problem was with the cd-rom drive itself. I have installed a new one and all is now working as it should be.

Great forum this by the way.Dell don't make Aspire laptops, Acer do. Perhaps you mean Inspiron?

If you've not gotten it to work, you may need to wipe the hard drive with a tool such as GParted.

Also, if you are using an OEM verison of Windows XP that came with another computer, and the STICKER says something like

A lesson to all: Do not buy a computer with Vista Basic installed: one of many giveaways taht the system is underpower.

Solve : RB*.tmp files?

Answer»

I have XPHome and Firefox latest versions.

Recently my Recycle bin gets filled with files bearing names RB ##.tmp

Most common are RB20.tmp and RB21.tmp .

I have heard that RB21 has some connection with malware.

Any idea about the probable origin of these files or how to trace that?

Thanks for your time.Do you have any other files there, or whatever you delete changes to rb*.tmp?
Are files sizes listed as 0kb?Thanks Broni

These tmps appear without my deleting any file. For example before I closed my last SESSION I emptied RB20 and 21 out of my Recycle Bin.

Now some 30 minutes after getting on the computer again, I am finding a new RB22.tmp in the bin.

Yes, as you said they are of 0 bytes. Also there are no other files accompanying them.

Thank you.Create simple text file. Name it whatever, save it to your desktop, and then delete it. See, if it's listed in Recycle Bin as whatever.txt, or as another rb*.tmp file.Done.

txt file is marked as txt itself , origin is shown correctly as from My Documents on properties.

(old RB*tmp shows RECYCLER as the origin!)

Solve : how to disable the taskbar double arrow scroller (XP)?

Answer»

Hi
I am using windows xp.
Can anyone tell me how to disable these two scrolling arrow from my taskbar?
or simply remove them. I know that I should see one right arrow but not UP and Down arrow.
My taksbare properties " GROUP simillar task bar buttons" is checked. If I uncheck no difference does it makes.

[recovering space - attachment deleted by admin]Remove the oversized H icon on the right...what's it for ? ?What is the EN icon to the right of the double arrow scroller? Is it related to the double arrow scroller?

What does this double arrow scroller actually do?These two arrows allow you to select another applications that are open. when I click on them, either up or down arrow, it displays the other open applications on the task bar and allows me to click and open them.
usually it is is suppose to be an arrow to towarads the right LIK this ">" but this is is annoying.

The language bar has nothing to do with it. I closed the language bar and nothing has changed.Quote from: barnamah on March 21, 2008, 12:45:23 PM

A >> would be a list of icons on your desktop, not your taskbar. And, the image you posted shows you have IE open, so your taskbar seems to be displaying applications correctly.

Have you ever installed any third-party software that modifies standard Windows features?Quote from: patio on March 21, 2008, 08:24:57 AM

No that's the one i was referring to ...it looks slightly oversized to me which is why i suggested trying to remove this.
But i'd still like to know an answer to your question...i think there's some third party eye-candy program installed...So, you're referring to something to the right of the red arrow on his image, right? To the right of the up/down arrow he's asking about, I see a language toolbar; it's the letters EN. Then, further to the right, I see a green box with the number 1 in it. That box APPEARS to extend further to the right but is cutoff in his image.

So, I don't any "H", other than on the IE icon I mentioned.I was referring to the IE icon with the H in it...it looks oversized compared to the others off to the left.Hi guys,
Here is another SNAPSHOT of this issue when I RIGHT-CLICK on it.

To make it clear, this is the bring up the window of applictions that are open.

That is supposed to be there if there is not enough space on the taskbar to view them all.

But, now we know the answer. Carbon Dudeoxide has it right. I just confirmed that on my computer.

So, barnamah, it's normal, you can't disable it. And, if you don't want to see it, then don't open so freakin many applications at one time. guys I have been using windows XP since 2001 and have never seen this. In our office there are 7 more people and none of them has seen this.
I remember few days ago I used to see a SINGLE arrow pointing to the RIGHT ONLY and I used click and see all the opened programs. Now I don't know what have I done, but I have installed Microsoft Office with SP3 and lots of other applications.

Today i showed these arrow to all 7 guys and asked them if they knew ANYTHING about it, they weren't aware of it either.

Solve : Local Area Network Cable unplugged comes and goes - prevents wirlesss connection?

Answer»

I reinstalled Win2000Pro after virus attack, now I cannot atain the internet with the RALink2500 pcmia card, and there is no other internet connection available. (Dell Inspiron 7500 laptop)

I install the disk from RALink and the consol comes up and FINDS my wireless modem (Belkin Wireless G Router) and captures with 100% signal. When I click on the IE icon to go out, the Local Area Network Connection icon appears with a red X on it, and the wireless KICKS out. Local Area Cable unplugged is the pop-up for the icon. In a moment, it dissapears and wireless is back up, but as soon as IE is CLICKED, boom - lost again.

Original setup worked fine, but GOT a virus that destroyed all .exe files for Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer. Tryed to clean it off, but had to reformat and reinstall OS.

Any ideas? need more information??

Solve : XP Install failure?

Answer»

Hi everyone, new to this site and looking for some help.

I have been working on a friends computer which had been AFFECTED by a number of viruses. He thought some were to do with the XPA anti virus. I tried to do a fresh install of xp but everytime it got to the SCREEN saying install xp or repair installation the computer SHUTDOWN. I tried 2 different discs with the same result. GOING into windows I found the format function would not operate, either from control panel or C prompt. Kept saying disc was locked. Eventually using another utility I managed to format the disc but I still cannot load xp, keeps shutting down at the same point. I tried re partioning but still no good.

Any ideas please?

Cheers

Gordon Disk could be damaged, is it a genuine Microsoft install disk? Look for scratches or dirt or damage on the underside of the disk.
The disk could be damaged but I would look at your ram first. See if you can download a ram tester program and check out your ram.

I am very confused and i tried ALMOST verything please help me try posting any possible soloution.Have you closed Word?

have you tried recreating the folder in its previous location, then dragging into it the files out of the moved folder then deleting the moved folder?

Solve : Automatic logsoff?

Answer»

I have a computer (laptop)
Dell
128mb Ram
516? Ghz
installed with WINDOWS XP professional.

One day after a flash disk from somewhere was inserted to my computer and removed safely, it said "there is a virus in the computer, please scan ur computer". When I tried to scan with Mcafe antivirus loaded in, it wont work and it is DISABLED. I wanted to uninstall it and load AVG antivirus and it can not be uninstalled any more. Then after I turned the computer off. In the morning when i open it, it brings the logon window requesting password. when i inserted the pass word, it opens by giving the typical xp opening sound but just after 2 to 3 SECONDS it also gives the closing sound and logging off window appears (with the notification "window is logging off and then saving ur settings" and logs off. At the end it comes BACK to the logon window asking the pass word. I have tried 10 or more times but with no success. Please help, there are so many usefuldocuments in it which i haven't taken a backup copy.

I have tried the recovery cd to diagnose it, and it SHOWED that there are about 10 errors which the diagnostic boot can not remeady it.

Can anyone HELP me out here? Windows XP SP2 flaptop that won't display the power meter on the task bar (next to the clock). Windows is set to display it yet it refuses to, even if I re-check and apply the option to display it. It also only seems to do this on one user account tho. What's a flaptop?

Have you tried this

1.Click Start, click RUN, type PowerCfg.cpl, and then click OK.
2.Click the Advanced tab.
3.Click to select the Always show ICON on the taskbar check box, and then click OK.
Yes, and a flaptop is a LAPTOP that I don't like to KEEP on my lap... therefore its flaptop I may have solved the problem by uninstalling the battery drivers and reinstalling them. Tho this is not a confirmed fix, it may start all over again next restart so keep those helpful comments comming.Did you right click the Task Bar, go to Properties, Customize and check 'always show'?

Solve : slooow pc?

Answer»

Hello

Over the past 2 days my dell (3000 series) has been running very slowly. First of all it wouldn't switch on at all, and when it did next the keyboard stopped registering, then the MOUSE after a short while (all connections checked, and are fine). This seems to be OK now, but it takes the PC a long time to even get to the windows log in page (about 5 mins) and the same for everything to load. I ran a full avg system scan which was clean, spybot also. And now I can't get an internet connection. I have a hijack this log attached. So, while I'm not sure if it is a virus, I thought it started all too suddenly on the PC for no reason, so thought it best to post in this section. If anyone can help/advise it would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Jane

This point could use a little clarification. I believe you meant to repeat defrag several times in one session. Or at least, defrag several times within a short period of time. Right?Hi

I defragmented quite recently (about 3 weeks ago) and also ran ccleaner a few days ago. But I will try this again tonight and also post the pc specifiations as soon as possible, thanks!

I think he meant Defrag, then defrag when it finishes, and then defrag again.

Hi

I defragmented quite recently (about 3 weeks ago)...
I don't think it is necessary to defragment the drive more than once if you have done it quite recently.Have you recently installed any new software or updated existing software?

When you post back with more info on your hardware, please include whether the mouse and keyboard are USB devices or PS/2.Hi again

I think this is the info you need about my computer:

XP Version 2002, Service Pack 2
Dell Dimension DIM3000
Intel, Celeron CPU 2.66 GHz, 512MB of RAM

I also have noted info in Device Manager if that is of any use?

I ran disk defrag again twice but still it is TAKING a long time to load. The net is working again but perhaps this is just coincidence.

Another issue I have, for a long time, everytime I try to do Windows Update an error page says that I must be logged on as administrator. I am always logged on as such. I went through Safemode also and tried to no avail. Is there a way around this? And could it maybe be the reason for the slowness?

Thanks. J.Oops, I forgot!

The keyboard is USB and the mouse is PS/2.

I haven't installed any new software, only updates I can think of would be anti-virus. I had been updating Spybot also 2 days ago when the the pc FROZE (post slow loading), and then my internet connection failed.

The learning fact is unless you write down every change you make when in there so you can UNDO them ( tedious APPROACH ) it's best to always have a backup before proceeding with any changes.

you need to restart your computer after any registry cahnges you make to your systemI love the 'if all else fails, read instructions...'. I agree with the others, try a system restore. The lesson learned is that you dont mess with registry keys unless you are sure of what you are doing and are prepared to back out if you reach a stop point.

Sounds to me like the INSTALL of SP2 did not go well, have you managed to update windows lately as well?

Good luck, sorry I cant be of more assistance... Windows will have made system restore point beore you installes SP2.

Solve : Built my first computer?

Answer»

Yep just built my first barebone PC and having problems. I recently installed Windows XP Pro SP3. The motherboard I got is: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3827134&CatId=2323, pretty decent. So after I installed windows, I installed all the drivers on the disc that came with the motherboard. When I move an application window it like flashes. And some times when I scroll it goes slow and flashes, any reason why this is occurring? How can I solve this problem? Are you using the video card on your motherboard, or a a seperate video card?

If it is a seperate video card you may need to VISIT your manafacturers website and download the latest drivers.

Also could you post your computer specsSorry atm no I'm not using any computer video card, just the built in video of the PC. (That might be the problem possibly?), I also have a graphics card but its not installed, its a Radeon ATI but I don't know what version because I lost the CD so I wouldn't know how to figure that out.

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ Socket AM2 CPU
CD Drive: Hitachi 160GB Serial ATA w/NCQ 7200/8MB/SATA-3G
Motherboard: Biostar MCP6P-M2 GeForce 6100 Socket AM2
RAM: OCZ 1024MB PC4200 DDR2 533MHz The on-board video ccard may be too slow for the graphics that Windows XP requires.

Did you BUY your video card in a box, cause it should say what model it is. You could then go to the manafacturers website and download drivers.Yes it was in a box, but this was a while ago and I don't have the box around any more. (Just in its plastic wrap)Under Control Panel, look under system. Under the Advanced Tab, click on performance. Play around with the stuff in the visual effects tab, and see if you can prevent the chunky scrolling from happeningOkay thanks , basically worked, I made it not show content while dragging windows and its better, much smoother. It'll do until I get a graphics card.just remember to come back and let ius know how u wentOkay I fixed the issue

First I went to Control Panel => System => Advanced => HARDWARE, my video card wasn't found so it said reinstall video card, then a windows thing popped up like a wizard. It tolded me to insert my cd if I had one, and bam it installed my graphics thing , I thought the DRIVER was already installed but WOOT I got it installed now .cool

Solve : Need to reformat and can't get to DOS .... aaagghghghgh!!!?

Answer»

I'm getting the error NTOSKRNL.EXE is missing or corrupt. I've tried rebooting with the disk, and I've tried getting into safe mode. Nothing is working. I think I'm going to have to reformat the hard drive and start over. That's actually fine with me because there's nothing on this laptop that I'm concerned about saving.

The problem is that I can't get to a DOS prompt. I'm using Windows XP.

Help. I'm a novice at this.

Welcome to the CH forums.

What disk are you trying to boot from? Have you changed the bios setting to boot from the cdrom first?

There are possible causes and cures here.. Note the final lines on the site.

Good luckif you boot from the windows xp install cd, it will format the disk fro youWhat baout taking the hard drive out and replacing it and then destroying the hard drive?FOLLOW these steps;

1) Start the computer up & logon to windows
2) Insert the windows XP installation disk
3) Restart your computer
4) MAKE sure your BIOS settings are set to boot from the CD drive first.
5) When you turn on your computer, look for a message along the lines of "press any key to boot from cd".
6) press any key to boot from disk
7) Press enter when it comes up with the installation menu
accept the licence agreement
9) press enter on the drive that windows is ALREADY installed on
10) continue without repairing previous windows installation
11) format with FAT/32 file system
12) It will begin the installation process

Make sure to have your cd key at the ready

I HOPE i havent made it too confusing for you
If you cant log on to windows, try booting up (Starting your computer) with the XP or Operating system (OS) disk in it. This should start the reinstallation process.

Bear in mind you will require a genuine COA(registry key) to enter to completely install XP Home.

Good Luck...

Solve : Window XP: Serial Question?

Answer»

I am curious as a new computer user, by doing a backup and my computer crashes or has some unforseen error that causes me to reformat it, by doing a back-up... is the os back uped as well or only the information on the harddrive?

Its just a small worry because as i undertsand the serial i used for my xp is a one time use deal, if i END up reformatting my computer, that serial wont be any good then will it?

Thanks
CFDepending on the computer...the product code for the operating system you are using is usually on a sticker attached to the case of the computer somewhere...or on a Windows book included with everything that came with your computer.

If you have software installed that performs a full backup of your computer, the product code is backed up as well...HOWEVER...it's encrypted and will not do you any good....unless you have a program installed that can actually take that encryption and give you your product code.

Depending on your backup software...you can SPECIFY what you want backed up.

It's a good idea to have a software program that will actually make a "ghost" image of your hard drive, so if you ever have to reinstall anything, the "ghosted" image of the drive will have everything you need to get yourself back up and running.Quote from: chainedfaith on May 27, 2008, 01:59:21 PM

Its just a small worry because as i undertsand the serial i used for my xp is a one time use deal, if i end up reformatting my computer, that serial wont be any good then will it?

Buy a legal copy and you won't have this worry...I do have a legal copy that came with my computer, thanks.

Although my COUSIN mentioned that her computer had to be reformatted, that the oem (?) cd that came with her computer worked fine because its a dell cd on a dell computer.

Mine is a custom built.
Will it still work fine through?
I am under the impression that the code/serial used already, cannot be used again? Or am I under the wrong impression here. Because that is why I am trying to figure if a backup will work with the serial if something goes wrong. the serial code that you used with your computer is "yours". it will work with your windows disk countless timesI think some of this confusion came about from the EARLY days of XP, when Microsoft threaten to make XP usable to one computer in the sense that, if one made too many hardware changes, at some point, it would "become" a "new" computer, invalidating the existing license. Microsoft backed off that position, thank goodness.

Solve : Help with partitions??

Answer»

I am trying to re-install XP using the SETUP cd.

When I try to delete the partition that XP is already installed on (the C: drive), it says

"Setup is unable to delete this partition because it contains temporary files needed for setup to continue"

How can i delete the partition on C: drive and do a clean install?Try formatting the partition with the cd.

Is there anything we might be able to do to help your XP isnstead of reinstalling it?Thanks 4 quick reply.

How do I get rid of the setup files already COPIED to the C: drive and format the partition using the cd?

Are you booting to the CD, or are you inserting the disk after the operating system is already LOADED?I inserted the setup disc after WINDOWS had already loaded.you need to PUT the disk in your computer. turn it off, and turn it back on. it might say something like "press any key to boot from cd'. if you dont see anthing like this, you may need to change device boot order so that your cd drive is firstI tried that but instead of asking me to boot from the cd, it asks me "which would I like to run: windows xp pro or windows xp pro setup?"

I chose setup and its still saying can't delete the partition.

Do I have to just finish the setup process and start over?could u please give us your compute specsAnd what exactly it says on this Recovery CD...
This part is kinda important.

Solve : Notepad program corrupted?

Hello:
My Notepad program that comes with Windows XP is corrupted. Can somebody suggest a FIX other than Windows restore?

thanks a lotIf you are sure that Notepad.exe is "corrupted", (How do you know this) then I suspect you are in such bad trouble that you will need to reinstall Windows. It is almost certainly not the only corrupted file!
try one of the following

1. find a pc on witch notepad is working. copy c:\windows\notepad.exe to a removable media/floppy or email it to yourself, on the computer where notepad.exe was corrupt rename c:\windows\notepad.exe to something else (eg c:\windows\notepad.bak) and copy in the working notepad.exe to same path (c:\windows\)

2. do a system file check! go start -> run -> and type "sfc /scannow" without the " and HIT enter. keep a windows xp installations cd handy. restart and try open notepad again

3. search for viruses. a good antivirus i use is www.avast.com but we all have our own taste.

it is not letting me copy notepad.exe from another computer.
When I copy and replace, it takes it, but the old one is coming back
I tried to rename the old one , it did let me, and put the NEW one in there, but still showing as corrupted. The new one with a different name like, notepad1.exe works fine

sfc /scannow - there is "a space" after "sfc".

Solve : Can install Vista but can't re-install XP?

Answer»

I tried to reformat my computer, but can't load Windows XP because I keep getting a mesage that says that my computer is shutting down to PREVENT damage. I thought that maybe my hard drive was bad, but I was able to install and run Vista. My problems is that none of my software works with that program and personally, I prefer XP. I have three different XP cd's, so I don't think that's the problem. Any ideas? I'm at my wit's end!:Are you booting from the CD?I'm assuming Vista was the original OS before you tried to change things, right?

I have this problem sometimes when changing Vista COMPUTERS to XP. I use a Linux live CD (Knoppix) to clear out the hard drive when Vista just won't let go.

There's a nice list of LiveCDs here:
http://www.frozentech.com/content/livecd.phpActually, I created my own problems and am worse off than when I started. I originally was running XP and was very happy with the system until I installed a new router modem and my computer kept locking up. When I went to remove that program, I accidently removed my Modem Blaster instead. By that time, my computer was freezing constantly so I thought that I WOULD reformat it with the hope that I could just start everything fresh. That's when the real problem began....I tried to reinstall XP but was only able to get to the blue screen that notified me that windows was shutting down before it caused damage to my computer (I have a second computer that is getting the same error message when I try to load XP). Out of desperation, I installed Vista but now none of my software works and the updated CD's I've made won't load because they say that I have to remove any security PROTECTION (which I've done.) I just WANT to go back to XP and my computer the way it was before I came along.I located the Knoppix cd that you were talking about...by the way, thanks! If I install that, will it clear out my hard drive and allow me to install XP and my software?Actually, it doesn't need to be installed. Just follow their instructions to create the CD then boot from it.That would be a miracle....thanks so much!I wonder if thats a bug..

Solve : Problem with XP Pro?

Hello

i thought i had a virus, so i formatted my machine.. i replaced windows vista with xp pro SERVICE pack 2, it works fine and i dident have any problems except now im missing audio/graphics card/modems drivers, and when i try to add a driver "HSFAC97_winxp" or "R68591" which are GENERIC drivers for conexant Modems and Conexant RD01 - D850 In particular, The Software doesent work for one.., and none of the "unknown devices" use this set of drivers, under "Device manager" the other devices are as follows...

Other PCI Bridge Device
PCI Device
PCI Simple Communications Controller
SM Bus Controller
USB Wireless 802/11b/g adaptor
Video Controller (VGA Compatible)

I wasent sure if it was PCI simple communications controller, and in windows vista after i first uninstalled the driver the modem was named in-built modem, but windows xp doesent list it. what do i do?i've also tryed HSFP_WinXP ,ive downloaded them multiple times from multiple places and still its not working? but everything ive found in google suggests this is the driver i need?Do you have the CDs for your machine? Did you get a driver CD with it?

What are the specs of your machine?

No i got this machine free as a replacement for a machine damaged by the repair people that was under warranty, its using xp pro sp2, and its an AMD athlon 64 x2 DUAL core processor 3800+ with 2.00 ghz and 896 mb of ram in a hp pavillion slimline s7700n pcSometimes it's not enough to just format your drive, try scrubbing it completely clean and then treat it to take a fresh windows installation.

I've done this at least 20-30 times, and it works every time.

You will have to put all your drivers back in, and re-install your internet settings.Quote

These are all MBoard devices and motherboard drivers need to be installed properly before you add other devices such as a modem or add on vid or sound cards or they simply won't work ...
DLoad and run Everest Home to identify your motherboard...travel to the manuf. SITE and DLoad and install the complete MBoard driver package.
Re-boot and then try the modem driver and it will most likely work now.

Solve : CD-R or CDRW??

Answer»

I have a TSST Corp CDRWDVD TS-H492C. I really do not know the difference between CD-R or the CDRW. RECENTLY, I went to STAPLE to buy some blanks CD to burn CD music. The associate suggested me to buy CD-R. HOWEVER, when I try to burn music I get a message "Insert a blank CD." Am I using the correct blank CD to burn music? Or, should I go BACK to Staple and buy CD-RW? CD-R's can only be written on once. CD-RW's can be written on, formatted, and written again, hence the name 'CD-ReWritable'.
Do you think this is your case?i notice that you may have a Toshiba. Some drives are made to only work with certain cd brands. CHEAPER burnable disks dont usually work as often as some more expensive ones

Etc.....OK it works now. I just needed to restart my computer. Sometimes we're just that quick around here...the other thing i would suggest is to clear your computer cookies every now & again. CCleaner does this well, as well as cleaning out your registry

Solve : Deleted Files with system Restore?

Answer» OK, so i recently made a mistake. i was deleting files in c drive (some game files) and when i finished, i went on the internet, did some other stuff, and restarted my computer (don't remember why). When it rebooted, it said i had deleted a .dll file, and it wouldnt let me go on in safe mode, or any mode. Thinking i had no other WAY out, i did system restore (or the kind of restore HP computers have right when it is starting up that reverts everything to factory settings). The problem now are files that were in my hard drive, mainly some very important pictures, very sentimental. The question is: can i get them back, and if so how? I emailed a tech but he hasn't emailed me back, thus my desperation and me coming here. Thank you in advance.if you have access to another working computer, you may be able to take the hdd out of the "dead" computer and HOOK it up as a secondary drive on the working desktop. you can then use a free utility that scans the drive and tries to recover lost files....

not sure of a free program that you could use, but someone else may know.

we also require some comp specs such as processor, memory, operating system
What flavor of Windows is this ? ?
If it is Win2K or newer go to Start/Run and type sfc /scannow and hit Enter....
Have your Windows CD handy...it will ask for it.
Let it finish and re-boot.
Post back with your progress and/or any error messages recieved.Go back to system restore, there should be a box you can check for 'undo system restore'. Check that and hit enter, that should do it unless you did the full destructive restore, if you did that then I don't think there is much hope to get anything back. Pat: this comp (im using) is the one that had the drive rolled back, and i don't have another comp.

Patio: i have no idea the "flavor" of the computer (don't even know what it means, googled it and i had no idea what they were talking about) but i did type that in, and it said to wait while it checked if all the protected files were intact. i canceled it b/c i don't have the xp disk, brandsmart usa didn't give it along with the pc (in 2003 i think)

BTW the link to my specs http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument?docname=c00057188&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN

Loren: Ok the restore i did doesn't have that "go back to previous settings" or w/e option, and if it would have it, i'd still be missing the .dll file and thus not be able to use the pc and be screwed.

See if you can find a friend with the same VERSION and Service Pack you have on that machine with a Microsoft CD and run the command i posted...this is the easiest way out of your dilemna right now...

System Restore will not repair files.
If you accidentally deleted those photos all bets are off.Interesting problem, here is how it should have worked.....

The files they are missing are not system files therefore i don't see how this would work...

Snakier didn't use System Restore, as far, as I can see.
He/she reverted his/her computer to day 1 state.
If so, all data is gone.the only reason i have any kind of hope is because the first step that that thing did was to save some files... (it said so anyways) Quote from: Broni on May 14, 2008, 08:08:00 PM

Broni's right. Although the term System Restore was used, Snakier actually reformatted his hard drive. It's important to pay attention to everything that's said because not everyone knows all of the proper terms (i.e. some people also use the term "restart" when referring to reformatting).

Snakier,
Unfortunately, there is little hope in your case because the procedure you took is meant to wipe the drive clean of all personal files and leave only the originally-installed files/programs. When it "saves files", it's typically referring to important system files. Although there isn't a lot of hope, there is still some.

First of all, make sure you don't write to that drive! That means don't download anything or create new files or anything else of that nature. The more you write to the drive, the more likely you are to lose your files forever. If you have another computer, use that while trying to research this problem. Now, with that said, here are a few links with some suggestions for you to consider...

http://www.velocityreviews.com/forums/t188871-retrieving-files-after-a-reformat.html
http://www.easeus.com/datarecoverywizard/recover-formatted-partition.htm
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/434147

You can take programming_pat's suggestion and TRY a program such as Recuva. I can't tell you how well it will work in your case (if at all), but it's worth a shot.

As you can see in some of these links, chances are fairly slim. If you took your hard drive to a professional, they might be able to recover some of the files for you, but I can tell you right now that it won't be cheap because this isn't exactly what is considered a simple procedure. There is a very good chance that your files are gone, but I wish you the best of luck.

Solve : Windows Freezes?

Answer»

Hi,

I have a pc running windows xp pro. Of late i did find the pc freezing
on a regular basis. Running different anti virus on the pc did not
help either

Hoping to resolve the problem i formatted the C drive and reinstalled
the Os , but things werent any better cause soon after the drivers for
the MOTHERBOARD were installed the Pc began freezing.

I collapsed all the partions on the HD and formated the MBR from the
xp install disk and reinstalled the os but the things were the same.

I tried installing the Os on a different hd but the computer still freezes.

I happend to run my pc with my friends Hd also containing XP pro and
my PC worked fine even when i had the TROUBLED disks as the secondary
hd.

Getting desparate over the situation, I have tried different os can
conclude that 2000 Prd and Xp prof have the issues of freezing ,
where as the pc runs fine on win 98 SE.

Hoping to hear your solution on this baffling solution.

Thanks in advance

Jerome

Since you have jumped thru all these hoops i'd say you have pretty much eliminated Windows as the culprit and LEAVES us with a hardware issue....

3 most common causes:
Heat
Bad RAM
Power.

For the heat issue DLoad and run speedfan which will give us some parameters on your temps...open the case and see if there is housekeeping to be done.
Best thing to use is a can of compressed air to clean out all the heatsinks and fans.
Use a QTip to hold the fan blades in place to prevent damaging them.

As always when working inside the case remove all power sources and take anti-static precautions.

RAM:
DLoad and run MemTest.
The file creates a bootable CD/floppy and runs without Windows.
Let it run a few hours....
Any errors at all and you have a bad/failing stick of RAM that needs replaced.

Power:
Borrow a known good PSU of the same wattage or greater and swap it in there to see if this helps things...if it does replace your PSU.
Do yourself a favor and don't buy a 20 dollar special.

Good Luck and let us know...
Thanks for your reply

before starting on the few steps suggested the thought which ran into my head are as follows

How can my friends hard disk (with his operating system xp pro and the drivers meant for his P3 pc) work fine on my computer without any glitch whatsoever.

Never the less will try ur steps and update here as well.

ThanksThat is a stroke of luck as most TIMES it won't work at all...

Solve : My computer freezes at the safe mode start up menu?

Answer»

It keeps FREEZING here no matter what option I pick. Before it did this I would pick an option and it would try start up but, then restart and go back to the same screen. Finally it stop doing that and just freezing.

How should I go about fixing it without having to dump everything and going anew.I had this same problem once and it turned out to be the display adapter card that was plugged into slot had come loose for some reason, You might check that. Also check your Fans to be sure all are running and it's not a heating problem. If the problem is none of those and you can't boot into safe mode the only other option I know is insert your retail COPY of XP and do a repair
installation....then redo all of the updates.

However, there are some really smart knowledgeable people on this forum so you might wait on the repair until one of them drops by with better solution.

It would really help if you listed your computer specs.Boot to your XP CD...
At the first prompt type "R" for the Recovery Console.
It will ASK which Windows installation you want to fix (you should probably only have one) highlight it and hit Enter.
After the Recovery Console loads and you are at a DOS-prompt looking screen type FIXBOOT and hit Enter.
Remove the XP CD and re-boot.

If this does not work repeat the above procedure only this time type fixmbr and hit Enter...again remove the XP CD and re-boot.

When I LOOK at the monitor it GIVES the message that the monitor does not recognize or can not find the computers hard drive. I have checked and everything is plugged in as it has always been...nothing changed. Does anyone have an ideas as to what to try? Thxwhat kind of computer do you have and what windows version do you have?A Gateway and Windows 2000okay I've heard alot of problems with the sleep mode on windows even I had problems with it. With mine after I got it out of sleep mode it would tell me that I had no cd in the dvd drive but I did. I have mine set to just the monitor goes into sleep mode. you could also turn off the hard disks by going into control panel then POWER options and select the time you want your monitor to go into sleep mode Any suggestions on how to get it out of sleep mode so I can get to the control panel. I have tried turning it on and off...pressing F2 as it is trying to boot...

Thank you for your help and suggestions.Where exactly is your computer stuck?Quote from: Michele on May 20, 2008, 09:02:38 PM

I have tried turning it on and off...pressing F2 as it is trying to boot..

This is why I do not use sleep mode. F2? Did you mean F8? If not shut off and start again tapping F8 continually.
You can enable or disable sleep mode by going into the setup screen. If you pay attention when you turn on your computer you should see a message that says to press a certain key to enter setup. Once you have entered setup check out your POWER options. Here you can disable sleep mode.
Post back if you NEED help with this.Excellent advice JJ3000, wish I had THOUGHT of that.

Solve : Locking Windows XP Pro with CTRL+ALT+DELETE?

Answer» HELLO, I would like to add the ability to my XP Pro to be able to quickly lock it via CTRL+ALT+DELETE. My work computer can do this which is also XP Pro SP2. I searched GOOGLE and I see a Windows+L for locking, but DONT want to do that. Is there a service to allow for this CTRL+ALT+DELETE locking?

When I press CTRL+ALT+DELETE all I get is the task manager, not the menu of Lock, Task manager, logoff, etc...

ThanksOK. Its just easy.

Do the follow,

1. LOGIN with Administrator Privileges.

2. Go to "User Accounts" from Control Panel.

3. Click "Change the way users logon or off" in the Pick a Task list.

4. Uncheck the option "Use the welcome screen" and click "Apply Options" button.

5. Now you can press Ctrl+Alt+Del to see options.

Note: Now your login screen is changed to OLD windows 2000 style. So you must type username and password to login. Also, you should now be able to lock the computer with Windows Key + L. You should already be able to do this without changing any settings......unless it's not your computer

Seeing as this is Windows XP Professional, there is a way to do it with gpedit.mscThanks everyone for all the info...followed the firections from CBSK and now got it the way I want it.

Thanks!!!!

Solve : BAD-POOL-CALLER or BAD-POOL-HEADER?

Answer»

I have an Emachine T2984 and Windows XP Pro Service Pack 2; I have gotten a blue screen for ONE month with the MESSAGE "Bad-Pool-Caller" most of the time and 1-2 times "Bad-Pool-Header". It is very hard for me to point to a program that had caused that. It could be ZUNE after I updated the software(!?) but I uninstalled Zune and I continue to get the error; once, as I remember, it happened when I start Windows Media Player. I checked Device Manager and in Non-Plug and Play devices section, HTTP has an exclamation yellow mark. I un-installed HTTP device but after I rebooted my computer it was still there.
When I had Zune installed (after updating its software) and I tried to charge my Zune, the USB port began to make noise, like I was plugging and unplugging My Zune non-stop. I tried my flash drive with the same port and it worked normally.
Thanks Dias DE veranoNot "cooler", but "caller", I think?

Solve : Windows XP Home and Open Office?

Answer»

::)I have HP pavilion XT XT963 which had Windows XP Home installed. I had a CRASH and I ordered the 7 discs from HP so I could fix my problem. A friend came over, looked at my computer and installed Open Office without asking if I wanted this or if I had the system recovery discs. Well, needless to say I prefer my regular Windows XP Home without the office. What do I need to do to correct this? My computer skills and knowledge is limited. I know I heard SOMETHING about backing up my stuff but I need to know how to do this also. I have the disc to write to but know nothing about how or what to do.......Please, Please, someone help me out on this.....Use the HP disc to restore your system, and simply uninstall OpenOffice.

To get rid of Open Office: Start -> Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs -> find Open Office and click Remove.

According to HP's website your computer should have a CD-RW drive.
Use My Computer to find the files you want to write to the disk.
Right click the files and select "send to CD-RW".
After you have selected all the files you want, PUT the CD-R in the drive.
Use My Computer and double click on the CD-RW drive.
The window should say "Files Ready to be Written to the CD".
Click on "Write these files to CD" (Upper left corner of the window).

Does this help? Quote

I know I heard something about backing up my stuff but I need to know how to do this also.
There is System Restore to back up your Windows Settings and you can use it to remove installed software or program setting/registry changes.
There is also physically backing everything up which would involve a secondary DEVICE like another hard drive, flash drive or CD.Thanks for your reply. I will try this and see how it GOES......

Solve : Windows Not Working At All?

Answer»

1. Windows Advanced Options Menu. Tap the F8 key about once per second or faster as you power up the system. I'm expecting the following menu to appear:
o Safe Mode
o Safe Mode with Networking
o Safe Mode with Command Prompt
o Enable VGA Mode
o Last Known Good Configuration
o Debugging Mode
o Enable Boot Logging
o Starts Windows Normally
o Reboot
o Return to OS Choices Menu

If you get a boot DEVICE menu see: what genius decided F8 should be device boot menu

2. Last Known Good Configuration. Selecting this item will load the registry settings for your last successful login. Not sure if your previous login attempts counted as success. Give it a try. You can use your normal user account with this OPTION. Safe Mode logins do not count (so you can go back to your last successful normal login settings).

3. Safe Mode. Try to boot into Safe Mode. You may be asked to enter the "Administrator" password. If this is Windows XP Home Edition, it may be "blank", as in never set. Either leave the password field blank (for no password) or enter the correct password. Hit 'OK" to continue.

If you can't get past the password request, Safe Mode may be closed to you.

4. Let us know whether "Last known configuration" helps or whether you can boot into Safe Mode with or without the error messages you're getting.Try this from How do get the taskbar and desktop back if Explorer crashes:
Quote

* Close all visible Windows Explorer windows. Other running applications can be LEFT alone.
* Press Ctrl-Alt-Del, and then click Task Manager.
* In the Windows Task Manager application that appears, select New Task (Run) from the File menu.
* Type Explorer and click Ok.

Squall i don't at this time your expertise includes advice on setting up a dual-boot system...
For example here in this instance you would want to install the older OS first...although this isn't always the case in this instance it would be.
Stick with advising only on the Topics you have had experience and success with so far.

Thanx.
patio.thanks for your advice patio and squall but i dont know understand what dual boot system is? can you explain it in easier way? im still beginner on this. thanks guys

My PC specs:
2.66 GHz processor
1.4GHz of RAM
80 GB of HDD
a dual boot is from what i understand is when you have 2 hard drives (or 1 big hard drive) and you install 1 OS on 1 hard drive and the other OS on the other hard drive or install the OS on 2 different partitions on 1 big hard drive. If 1 big hard drive its just like installing an OS except you keep the current partition and make another one, as for 2 hard drives i dont know. my brother did that for me so the 2 hard drives are separate and are displayed as 2 different hard drives on the explorer, but when i reinstalled XP the hard drives were shared and were shown as one on the explorer Patio I have done this before successfully but didn't care for it an still REALLY don't. You don't need to separate drives just install the one after the other finishes.Quote from: squall_01 on May 25, 2008, 11:58:50 AM
