Solve : D Drive?

Answer»

The drive that I am having a problem with is the HP RECOVERY Drive D
Type: Local Disk
File System: FAT 32
The capacity of the drive is 5.01 GB, with used space 4.93 GB
Free space 82.1 MB
When I click on Disk Cleanup and then OK it acts as though it is cleaning but nothing changes.

Drive C
Type: Local Disk
File System: NTFS
Capacity: 52 GB
Free space is 48.8 GB
Used space is 3.35 GB

The problem is that I cannot get into Drive C. EVERYTHING GOES into the Recovery D Drive which protects the system which is 82 MB from being full. The computer is an HP Pavilion 533W and I am using Windows XP.

Is there a way to load something into the C Drive by making a new file to get started in the C Drive?

Any help that is offered is appreciated.

Solve : Most Programs not responding?

Answer»

Yesterday I had a problem with Firefox, all my favorites had dissappeared when I reopened it during the day. So I shut down and restarted the computer today and firefox was STILL the same, no favorites. So I went into safe mode and restored my computer to a previous date. Firefox still was not working correctly and favorites were still gone. I UNINSTALLED firefox and reinstalled but not change. So I uninstalled it am using my other browser. But I have noticed when I open other programs, including control panal they do not respond. I am getting a spooling error message I know is from my printer and will put printer disc in to repair this. But I can not figure why all other programs besides outlook and my browser are not responding. Any suggestions on how to FIX?Please Clik Here...Figured out the problem, had an error in the spooling application and had to GO into windows explorer and delete all other drivers and printers that were showing, then go into the registry and delete the same leaving only what was required. It seems that I had a conflict with HP smart web printing and winfax printer with my HP 1600 printer. So every application that used one of these printers would not respond.

ThanksFigured out the problem Good Job Thanks for posting the info. Wow! Interesting SOLUTION...

Solve : Lost in translation?

Answer»

My computer took a dump on me. I determined it ti be the hard drive and bought a new one. The BIOS recognizes the new drive without a problem. I tried to load windows XP and it said I had 131062 MB of disk space, but the HDD is 400 Gigs. What is up with this THING? Would it be a controller problem? Is there a chip on the motherboard that remembers the old drive and continues to think it is there? Until SERVICE Pack2 is installed and or UPDATED it will read approx. 137G of that hard drive...
Is SP2 included on that XP CD ? ?Quote from: patio on May 25, 2008, 05:21:39 AM

Is SP2 included on that XP CD ? ?

I don't think so. It is an older version of XP Pro. How do I get the sp2 downloaded and installed?get sp3, it includes sp2

get sp3, it includes sp2

You can get the CD Image HEREAs there are still issues with it i am holding off on recommending SP3 for AWHILE...
Order SP2 CD

Download Page for SP2So I guess it was good I haven't installed it yet. I've burned the CD though...I installed it 3 weeks ago on my Shuttle ST62K. No problems at all. I had to patch tcpip.sys and uxtheme.dll just like I did with SP2 but everything works just fine.
Yep it's kind of hit or miss...many people are running it with no issues at all.
A certain number of AMD CPU's have issues with it and i just cleaned it off a machine because it lost all internet connectivity.
Once removed everything runs fine so go figure...

Solve : POST HELP?

Answer»

When you turn on a COMPUTER the Power Supply runs POST and when all Voltage Levels and CURRENT Levels are good it sends a Signal to the Motherboard to stop GENERATING a Reset Signal.

My Q/A is?
Does the Power Supply have some kind of Chip in it to tell when the Voltage and Current Levels are good or how does it do this?

And Q/A 2.
What is a Reset Signal and when is it started?1) No...this is handled by the board itself. PSU's in nature are dumber than a box of rocks...

2) When you press the button...The power supply has nothing to do with POST. POST=Power On Self Test is a series of tests performed by the startup BIOS (Basic Input /Output SYSTEM) to determine if it can communicate correctly with the essential hardware components required for a succesful boot.

Solve : I have Big problem of windows XP?

Answer»

hi I have window XP . every thing working just fine. but I can't use usb for the printer and sound to listen the music. I check on my system it show vaid.
please tell me what happen? Please Clik Here...HI
here's the solution for sound troubleshooting

Tutorial #1:
Listed below are some basic steps to help restore sound to your computer. This troubleshooting guide assumes that your computer has no sound at all.

If you have Windows XP or Windows Me, use the System Restore feature to return the computer back to a time before the issue began.
Using System Restore

If you added hardware or software to your computer immediately before the issue started, remove the added hardware or software. Be sure to turn off the computer before removing hardware. As with any problem that arises with computers, reversing a process that started a problem may correct the problem.

Be sure to check the obvious:
Are the SPEAKERS turned on and have power?
Try unplugging the speaker power adapter and keep it disconnected for 30 seconds or so, then plug it back in.
Try plugging a known working item (such as a lamp) to check the wall outlet for power.
Check to insure that the Mixer Control volumes are set to 3/4 volume and are not muted. Analog or DIGITAL can be set in the Mixer Controls, depending on the type of sound card and speakers used.

MAKE sure that all connections to all speakers are fully seated. Usually, these plugs click twice before the fully seat.

Try plugging in a known working set of head phones to ensure that the sound card is functioning.

Try plugging in the speakers to a known working portable CD player that will accept the same connection. This will determine if the speakers are working.
Go to: Start>> Control Panel>> Administrative Tools>> Component Services>> Services. Make sure audio is enabled.
Go to: Start>> Control Panel>> Administrative Tools>> Services>> Windows Audio. Make sure "Windows Media" service is running. If it's not, right click on this service and select "Start".
Go to: Start>> Control Panel>> Sounds and Audio Device Properties. Be sure that the "Mute" checkbox is unchecked.
Update Software:

Many sound problems are resolved simply by downloading the latest version of the Windows Media Player and/or Internet Explorer directly from Microsoft to use as a baseline test.

If you are using Microsoft Media Player, it may be useful to check for any recent updates. To do that, just start the Media Player, click on "Help", then click on "Check for Player Updates..", and it will automatically download any updates.

Or, you can download the latest Microsoft Windows Media Player for both PCs and Mac for free from:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/9series/player.aspx

Also, since old versions of web browsers may have limitations or problems, check for any web browser updates, and upgrade to the latest version of your web browser. For Microsoft products, the current status of your software can be verified by the Windows Update web site at:

http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

Reset the default BIOS settings:

You can try resetting the sound default in the BIOS. Here's how:

Note: For most PC's entering the BIOS will be the same. If the INSTRUCTIONS below do not work for your system, consult your operating manual for instructions on entering the BIOS.
Turn the PC on. When the Windows logo first appears, press the F1 key repeatedly until you see the BIOS setup screen appear.
Press the F5 key.
Select Yes or OK, then press the Enter key on your keyboard.
Press the F10 key, then select Yes or OK to save the default settings. Press Enter.
Exit the BIOS and restart your system checking for sound.
[Top]

Tutorial #2:

This document applies to Microsoft Windows 98, ME, and XP.

There are many reasons why sound can disappear. The steps inside this document fix a wide variety of sound failures. Perform the steps in order until you can hear sound from the speakers. This document pertains to original sound devices that came INSTALLED on HP Pavilion computers. If a sound card was added, consult the sound card vendor's Web site for support information and driver updates.

Step 1: Checking volume and mute settings:

The volume setting for one or more sound devices might be disabled or set too low. Use the following steps to adjust volumes to their correct levels:

In Windows XP, click Start, and then click Control Panel.
In Windows 98 and ME, click Start, click Settings, and then click Control Panel
In Windows XP, open Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices, and then click Sound and Audio Devices.
In Windows 98 and ME, open Sounds and Multimedia, and then click the Audio tab.
In Windows XP, click the Advanced button under Device Volume.
In Windows 98 and Me, click the Volume button under Sound Playback.
Remove all checkmarks from Mute boxes at the bottom of the Master Volume window and adjust the volume setting slide bars to their highest positions. Close the Master Volume window and test for sound. If there is still no sound, go to the next Step.

Step 2: Verifying the connections:

Use the following steps to verify that the sound cables are properly connected from the speaker to the computer (cable connectors and plug assignments are normally color-coded to aid with connections).

Unplug the sound cable.
Plug headphones or one speaker directly into the speaker out connector on the back of the computer. The speaker out connector may have a symbol of a speaker
or a circle with an arrow pointing out, or it may just say "OUT" next to it. Test for sound using the computer. If sound does not work, go to "Step 3:

If sound is restored when the headphones or one speaker is plugged in, replace the original sound cable with a new sound cable and test for sound. Sound should be restored after replacing the sound cable. If sound does not come back after replacing the cable, the sound card needs to be replaced because the speaker out connector is bad.

Step 3: Configuring on-board sound in the BIOS:

Some computers come with sound on the motherboard (on-board), and some computers use a sound card. The on-board sound setting in the BIOS has to be set according to your particular sound configuration. Perform the following steps to correctly configure the sound in the BIOS:

Look at the back of your computer and use one of the following three items to determine the proper sound configuration and sound setting:
If the plugs for the speakers and microphones are located next to the parallel, serial, or USB ports, then the computer has on-board sound. The on-board sound setting in the BIOS should be Enabled. If the plugs for the speakers and microphone are located away from the other ports and sit in an area by themselves, the computer has a soundcard. The on-board sound setting (if there is one) in the BIOS should be Disabled. If the computer has sound plugs in both locations, a
soundcard has been added to the computer that already contains on-board sound. The on-board sound setting should be Disabled. To enter the BIOS, turn on the computer and when the first screen appears, press the F1 key repeatedly until the BIOS Setup screen opens. Use the LEFT and RIGHT ARROW keys to select the Advanced tab. Press the DOWN ARROW key to select Onboard Audio Options and press ENTER. If Onboard Audio Options is not available, select I/O Device Configuration and press ENTER. If Audio Codec is listed, select it and press ENTER. Select either Enabled or Disabled depending on your
configuration and press ENTER. Press the F10 key and then press ENTER to save and exit Start Windows and check for sound. If there is still no sound, continue to the next Step.

Step 4: Restoring the sound drivers

Use the recovery process to restore individual drivers for a sound or combination sound-modem card.

If the computer came with recovery discs (Windows 98 and Me), place the last disc of the set into the top disc drive and follow the on-screen menus as they appear. Restart the computer after restoring the sound driver software and test for sound. If there is still no sound, continue to the next Step.

Step 5: Installing an updated sound driver:

Go to your computer manufactures web page to search for updated sound driver software. Read the instructions on the download pages carefully
before installing.

If there are no updated sound drivers available, use Microsoft's Windows Update feature. Connect to the Internet and try the following items until Windows Update opens:

Click Start, and then click Windows Update (if it is listed).
Click Start, click Settings, and then click Windows Update (if it is listed).
Click Start, click All Programs, and then click Windows Update (if it is listed).
Go to Microsoft's Web site and click Windows Update from the Downloads menu.
If either Web site does not contain updated drivers, continue to the next Step.

Step 6: Removing the drivers in Safe Mode:

Turn on the computer and press the F8 key repeatedly, every half of a second, until a menu appears. Select Safe Mode and press ENTER. The Windows desktop displays Safe Mode in all four corners of the screen.
In Windows XP, click Start, and right-click My Computer.
In Windows 98 and Me, right-click the My Computer icon on the desktop.
Click Properties from the list that appears.
In Windows XP, click the Hardware tab then the Device Manager button.
In Windows 98 and Me, click the Device Manager tab.
Click the plus sign (+) next to Sound, video and game controllers.

Click a sound device name other than audio codecs and Legacy Audio Drivers, and then click Remove. In Windows XP, the Remove button is a small picture of a computer overlaid by an X. Click OK on the warning windows that appear. Continue removing sound devices until all devices are removed. If the device is a combination sound-modem card, remove the items under Modem as well.
NOTE: Do not remove audio and video codecs.

Click OK in Device Manager when there are no more items to remove under Sound, video and game controllers.
Close all programs and restart Windows. Go to the next Step.

Step 7: Reinstalling the sound drivers

Upon rebooting, Windows will find new sound hardware. If a window appears stating that Windows needs help finding a particular file, you can browse using the following pathnames until the file is found:

C:\Windows\inf
C:\Windows\options\cabs
C:\Windows\system
C:\Windows\system32

Click "Continue Anyway" on any Digital Signature Verification windows that may appear.
Restart the computer and test for sound. If the problem remains, then try reseating your sound card. Also, try placing your sound card into a different slot. If you are still having trouble up to this point, the problem is likely that you have a faulty sound card.

You're in the running for the Monthly no details contest.HI,

you are missing files of a Windows component, then you can run the System File Checker. Windows File Protection only monitors and maintains XP system components. If it is a 3rd party application, you may need to reinstall that application to restore the missing files.
METHOD #1:

To run Windows System File Checker:

Go to Start>> Run, type in: sfc /scannow [Enter]

Windows may require you to insert your XP CD.

Method #2:

You can also use System Restore to recover your system back to date before the files were missing. To activate System Restore:

Go to Start>> All Programs>> Accessories>> System Tools>> System Restore.

HI
FIND ANOTHER solution from me

you get the error:
Windows could not start because the following files is missing or corrupt
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM or \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SOFTWARE

Insert and boot from your Windows XP CD.
At the first R=Repair option, press the R key
Press the number that corresponds to the correct location for the installation of Windows you want to repair.
Typically this will be #1
Enter in the administrator password when requested
cd \windows\system32\config
Depending on which section was corrupted:
ren software software.bad or ren system system.bad
Depending on which section was corrupted
copy \windows\repair\system
copy \windows\repair\software
Take out the CD ROM and type exit

Solve : Error Within Windows XP C Drive Compression?

Answer»

I hope that someone can shed light on this problem. I'm running windows XP Pro and I have the C drive set to compress to save space. I made a MISTAKE and also used Registry Mechanic to compress the C Drive as well. It made the files bigger than they are. So I'm showing I have 1.25 GB of space available when it should be half used and half free on the hardrive. Is there anyway to fix this problem? Or do I just have to wait and SEE it fix itself?Disk COMPRESSION is something i stay away from as much as i can...
Try and UNDO the Reg Mechanic compression FIRST of all and if successful i'd make sure everything is running fine after a few cold boots and turn off the Windows compression as well.
Registry Mechanic is not a tool to be taken lightly as it can often create way more issues than it can solve.
Good Luck.

P.S. I believe RM makes a backup of the Registry specifically for un-doing changes...

Where am I?

I think we should wait and see what happened to his Hard Drive. By 'refreshed' he could be meaning 'formatted'.
Nice program by the way, though there are many file recovery software available on the net. Where am I? Top of list. Yes I agree on waiting. Thats why I suggested on supplying the requested info and waiting.
Thanks for the quick response. I am some what of a dummy when it comes to computers. But I think is was not to refresh but to reformat. Taking old junk off and all. But I want to explore the old information, emails, pictures, etc. So can I recover any of it? If so how? Also I was wrong about what I have.....Dell computer with microsoft windows xp. I sure hope you can help me. Also one more thing. We had two people (users) on our computer at one time. The other person has deleted their user name, how do I recover that as well? Doing a whole lot of snooping hope you can help...this is my computer but investigating those who have used it in the past.... If you formatted and re-installed Windows unfortunately all your data is gone...unless you want to take it to a data recovery SPECIALIST which you'll need deep pockets for...
Sorry
Thanks for all the answers.....so I guess it looks as if I've lost everything ha..

You can CONNECT the formatted laptop into another computer and perhaps recover some data with some recovery programs but the CHANCES of finding any intact file are very slim.

Solve : Monitor went out?

Answer»

My monitor started FLICKERING and then went black. I can get an image for about a second when I first turn it on. I have already bought a new monitor but I was wondering if this one can be fixed. It is not even two YEARS old. I did have a power surge recently but it worked fine after that and I had the computer on a surge protecter. If it is not worth keeping, I will discard it. Anyone know?Does the new monitor work with the computer? (just discounting the possibility that the computer is damaged, not the monitor)Yes. Both are HP. The one that doesn't work is HPpavillionf1503Generally speaking it usually isn't worth the cost to have monitors repaired...however being that it's so new i'd certainly drop it off at a shop for an estimate.Depends on how badly you want the monitor and what's really wrong with it. If it's just a capacitor, they can be replaced cheaply and by most electronics REPAIR places.

Most computer shops ship them off to somewhere that specialize in repairing monitors, and it's quite costly. Thanks for the INFO. That's what I THOUGHT.

Remove unused programs, increase the size of the hard disk, or remove programs from the hard disk so that you can install the programs on another hard disk
Windows can run very slow if you are running out of hard disk SPACE. Depending on the TYPES of programs that you run and the amount of programs that you are running, more MEMORY may be required for the computer to remain stable and efficient. The computer becomes unstable if the amount of available hard disk space is low. Quote from: GP2 on May 18, 2008, 07:12:25 AM

Solve : Please help! My PC continually restarts itself?

Answer»

Not... much... time. I'll try and explain quick, but first I'll submit this topic then edit.

Edit -

Ok. I have a Packard Bell Windows XP. I thought it had been making some strange noises lately, but that may be my imagination. But I think it's whirring a lot louder than it used to.

It always restarts itself. And then oneday, it actually got rid of my wallpaper and replaced it with some sort of error message, complete with a button that I could press if I wanted to restore it. I tried it but it said errors on page or something. And especially ever since then it's been a restarting fest.

Pleease help me. What do I do? My life revolves around this machine at the moment.

Thanks.Oh and also, in advance, please can you try and make your advice as simple as possible? Sorry, I'm a tech dunce. Thanks!Take it to a repair store. Or buy a new one. That whining sound suggest hardware failure.

do you have a warranty on your computer? if you do then you may be able to get it repaired or replaced for freeIf you do take it in for repair then back up any data you've created. Unless you tell them to make a backup most likely they'll just replace the drive and reinstall the OS.

Alan <>< Thanks guys.

That sounds like the best bet. This morning the problem is as bad as ever.

Do you know how long it takes to repair hard drive failure? I'm hoping not to be out for to long you see!max of 1 day, but there may be a que of computers in for service so it may take longer. to replace the hdd it would take them about 10mins but they will prob need to install an operating system and make sure evrything worksIf you haven't already taken the computer in for repair, there may be some steps you can take to determine and correct the actual problem.

Usually, when a computer continually restarts itself, it is because an option deep inside your system was selected by default that tells your computer to restart when you blue screen.

To De-select this option and retreive the blue screen error codes (which will help identify the problem)
Go to Start Menu -> (RIGHT Click) My Computer -> Properties -> "Advanced" Tab -> "Settings" Button (Under Startup and Recovery near the bottom of the panel) -> "Automatically Restart" Checkbox (Under System Failure near the bottom-middle of the page)

The notable difference will be, instead of restarting, now your computer will blue screen. Record the error at the top of the screen, and any hexidecimal numbers (they look like 0x0FBD123) on the page in the order that they appear, and re-post them in this thread. These numbers will allow us to discern the source of your system failure.Quote from: programming_pat on May 14, 2008, 05:15:03 AM

That sounds great, SevenLZ. What happens after it blue screens, should I just take a note of the codes then switch off? That whining sound suggest hardware failure. Unlikely, that any kind of program fix will correct or improve the whinning.A whining sound could be something as non-system critical and easily replaceable as a fan, its best to isolate the problem before you decide to spend money on the solution.Yes, after a blue screen you'll have to TURN the power off manually. This will not damage your computer, as the processor has already received a HALT instruction at this point.Ok I've got my first blue screen. It mentioned things about 'have I recently installed new hardware or software, and was it installed correctly' etc.. It also said:

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

*** STOP: 0x0000000A (0x000000, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0x804EF42F)

Symptom:
Every time I get on line I get an error message that states "This system is going to shut down, save all information. This shut down was initiated by NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM ......windows must restart because the remote procedure call (RPC) service terminated unexpectedly." What does this mean and how can it be fixed?

Solution:
You have the MSBlaster worm. To remove it, perform the following tasks:

The following instructions are in three parts:

1. Stop it from running
2. Remove it from your system
3. Make sure it doesn't come back

Before beginning, if you have an always-on internet connection, it's a GOOD idea to disconnect it.

1. Stop it from running:

Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete to BRING up the Task Manager, then on the Processes tab, click msblast.exe and then "End process." Reply "Yes" to the warning message that comes up.

This stops the worm from running, so your system will not shut down. However, it doesn't remove it, and if that's all you do, it will start up again the next time you boot.

2. Remove it from your system:

A. Start the registry editor program, regedit, by going to Start>> Run, and type: REGEDIT [Enter] Navigate to HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Run by clicking the plus signs next to each of the folders in the left hand pane. When you get to the last of them, Run, click the word Run itself. In the right pane of the resulting window, find an entry called "Windows Auto Update". Right-click it and delete it.

B. Go to Start> Search. Search in all files and folders for msblast, delete all files found.

You should have successfully removed the worm from your system. If you do not take necessary steps to prevent future infections, it could come back just as easily as it did the first time.

3. Make sure it doesn't come back:

A. Make sure you're running a firewall that prevents worms like this from getting in. You can enable the built-in Windows XP firewall, or download and install another one such as the free version of ZoneAlarm. To enable the built-in firewall, go to Control Panel, double-click Networking and Internet Connections,
then click Network Connections. Right-click your connection, then click Properties, and on the Advanced tab, click the option "Protect my computer and network..."

B. Be sure to use a good anti-virus program and that you update the definitions on a regular basis

Solve : Saving cookies?

Answer»

Hi all,

I have an e machine with XP. I am wondering if there is a way to PERMANENTLY save the cookies for the sites that I have saved in my Internet Options as TRUSTED sites?
If I want to delete my browsing history it also deletes the cookies from the temporary internet files. I did look in FAQs but could not find it anywhere.

Thanks,
Mark

What browser?I mainly use Firefox but I also use IE occassionally. On firefox, you can go to Tools --> Options --> PRIVACY and have a look there.

What version of IE are you using and how are you clearing your Browsing History? In Firefox/tools/options/privacy/cookies/exceptions/ they give you a choice to allow cookie for this session only or always allow cookie. That does not seem like it will save
the cookies if I run CCleaner of clear history though.

IE is 7.0 I believe. When I clear history on IE I usually go to tools/delete browser history. But again if I run CCleaner is there a way to save certain cookies?

Thanks for your time and help.Did you uncheck cookies in CCleaner?

I'm not SURE about IE but there should be something like exceptions or something similar.OK thanks... I'll do a little more research and let you know what I find out.

Solve : Windows ME - Administrator Authority?

Answer» HI All,

Please help!!!!

I am currently trying to install a web cam (vimicro) ONTO my PC, but as I follow the set up instructions I receive the following error message:

"The package should be installed by the account with administrator authority. Login by the account with administrator authority and run set up again!"

It's a bit odd, because it is a home PC (not on a network), and all users use the same account (the log on SCREEN does not appear when turning on the PC).

I have restored by PC to factory settings in case it was a fault with the system, and I have used a different driver disc and received the same error message.

Any help would be great!

Thanks

StuartWhat Windows version?
Any other problems? Can you access Control Panel? Can you access Add\Remove?The webcam driver may not be designed for Windows Me. AFAIK, Me didn't have Administrator accounts: you either were using the computer or not. Most ran away from Windows Me. Try just plugging it in, sometimes it works like that. If you want to loook at what the webcam is seeing, download Amcap from www.noeld.comHi All,

It is Windows Millennium Edition. New problems are also starting to surface:

The autorun function (on different CD installs) FREEZES my system
I have access to the Control Panel, but the software I have uninstalled always appears back in the list when I re-enter.
Windows is now very unstable and freezes & crashes (blue screen) every few minutes - irrelevant of what I am doing

The Webcam is listed as compatible with Windows ME, but I am currently checking with the retailer.

Finally, the PERMISSIONS message is shown when I try to install FM2005. I was previously able to install this....

Would a system restore resolve these problems?

Thanks

StuartGo to Start/Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter...
Have your Windows ME CD handy.
After it finishes re-boot.I tired, but I received the error:

"windows cannot find 'sfc'. You may have typed it incorrectly......etc....."

Any other ideas?

Cheers!
There is a space between sfc and the forward slash...
sfc /scannow.Yes, I tried that, no luck.... Stil the same message...
Windows ME doesn't have sfc.exe, and actually, Micro$oft was proud about removing it. Stupid...

Solve : Batch changing folder icons?

Answer»

Oh boy...I can see this site BECOMING ADDICTIVE very fast. Anyone know out there how to batch change multiple folder icons from the "yellow folder" to a different icon (all the same). I know how to easily so it for one but was wondering if there was a way to do many at once. THANKS muchly!!!Quote

I know how to easily so it for one but was wondering if there was a way to do many at once.

It will be easier to guide you after you have posted what you have done already. This will prevent us from taking you in a whole new direction with the solution.

I'm using XP MCE SP 2. I can right click the folder, go to Properties, then Customize, then Change Icon and pick the .ico file I want. Is there a way to do 50 folders at once? If I highlight all 50 folders and follow the steps above that I mentioned, it only changes the first folder icon and not the remaining 49. ThanksOpen My Computer than click on Tools and look for Folder Options. In the list look for File Folder and than click Advanced.

Be very careful with this as it will make a lot of changes to your system.

Won't this change ALL the folders on my computer? I'm only looking at changing the icon for some of the folders within a folder. The intent here is to ORGANIZE what is in the folder so I can quickly tell by the icon what type of file is in the folder. How many folders and how many icons do you want to change?

In one folder I have 1244 folders of different topics. I'd like to group them by changing the icon on the folder. I dunno...10-20 at a time? The goal here is not to have to do this 1244 times. ThanksCouldn't find anything to help you out. Folder objects in Windows scripting do not have the icon PROPERTY exposed.

There are some 3rd party programs on Google that may help.

Should you ever need to change the icon for a shortcut, then this is the place to come first. OK...thanks anyways

Solve : Outlook Express email import Vista home premuim?

Answer»

Hass anyone had trouble importing emails and address book from Outlook Express 6 to Windows Mail in Vista Home Premuim, if so how do you overcome this. OjasYou may be better off not using Windows Mail and installing live mail instead.
This will import all of your OE6 mail and contacts easily
However if you REALLY want to use Windows Mail this might help :

To import from the Outlook Express message store into the Windows Mail message store, do the following:
1. Create a directory under the current user's Documents, such as Documents\OEMail. This directory needs to be within the user's SPACE, such as under Documents, in order to PREVENT possible access permissions problems.
2. Copy all the dbx files from one Outlook Express Identity into this directory, ensuring that folders.dbx is included.
3. Go to Edit | Select all in Windows Explorer and select all the dbx files. Then right click on the selection and choose Properties and ensure that the READ only attribute of the files is unchecked.
4. In Windows Mail go to File | Import Messages and choose Outlook Express 6 format and choose to import from a directory.
5. Then use the Browse button to browse to the directory of dbx files. Make sure that when you set the directory that what is listed in the path is correct (NOTE: Vista can put the wrong path in here sometimes, so instead of c:\mypath it puts c:\mypath\mypath, so check the path to verify that it is correct, and if it is not correct then fix it by clicking the Browse button a second time and then leave the selection blank and clicking Okay.).
6. Then select the files from which you wish to import messages and click Import.

This was sent to me when I had problems and it worked, you have to follow the instructions very carefully
Patchrunner
Just so i have this straight... you're suggesting LiveMail over Outlook ? ?

If you mean Outlook Express then Definately YES,
Windows Mail has replaced OE6 and will not allow web based ACCOUNTS, whereas live mail will manage web accounts and pop3 accounts.
It will also imort much better than Windows Mail which has a habit of saying that there are no files to convert or erroneously showing a folder as : "C:\mydata\OE6\OE6 " when the folder was "C:\mydata\OE6"
Also you cannot 'downgrade' back to OE6 from Vista

Solve : Computer began lagging this week.?

Sure enough, primary IDE channel lists PIO Mode under its current transfer mode. Am searching myself for more ANSWERS, but let me know if you have any specific advice.I can't advice you, because if I was in your situation, I wouldn't be any smarter.
I'd have to investigate one Google link after another. One SIMPLE step to start with...uninstall Primary, and Secondary IDE channels through Device Manager, and restart. They'll be automatically reinstalled. So, moral of story is that if a computer acts up after a couple of failed DVD writes, this might be the problem.

Thanks very much, especially Broni.

As I UNDERSTOOD it, the mode was changed because of the DVD-ROM drive's multiple burn failures... and the DVD burn failed multiple times in a row because one of the files had a name that was too long. Yesterday, after resetting the transfer mode and after I took care of the offending filename using a utility designed for the purpose, the burns went FINE and all was well. Do you still think I should be worried?No...only if it drops back into that mode after awhile.

Solve : Using a BAT program to rename a file with date and time?

Answer»

I found article CH000987 about using a BAT program to rename a file with the date or the time. Is there a way to combine the two so that the new file name contains both the date and the time? I'm trying to do this on a server machine running Windows 2000 Server. Thanks for any help provided. What date and time format are you using in your locale? In other words, do you use NORTH American format, or "rest of the world" format?

the results of

Code: [Select]echo %date%
and

Code: [Select]echo %time%
would be useful.

I'm in the US.

echo %date% YIELDED 05/21/2008

echo %time% yielded 13:06:51.86 at the time I ran the command.

ThanksGreat. Thanks. Now... what did you want to do exactly? rename all the files in a folder, or just some of them, with the original name plus the date and time before or after, or are you happy ARRANGING all that yourself and just need pointers towards how to extract the relevant date & time data into variables?

Well, here's what's going on. At a scheduled time every weekday, a secure FTP client software package that we're running on our server computer FTP's a file called INVOICES to a third party company. But, I want to keep archive copies of all the daily INVOICES files. The FTP client software gives me the option of running a post-transfer command so I want to set up and run a BAT program that will move the INVOICES file to an archive folder and rename it. I'd like the renamed file to have a format such as INV_20080521_2000 (if the file was renamed at 8:00 PM today, for example).

I've done something similar to this on a Win 98 machine several years ago but my BAT programming skills are a bit rusty. Plus, like I said, this is a Windows 2000 Server machine.

Thanks.Something like this ought to do it

Code: [Select]@echo off
set thisfolder=%cd%
set mm=%date:~0,2%
set dd=%date:~3,2%
set yr=%date:~6,4%
set hr=%time:~0,2%
set mn=%time:~3,2%
set newname=INV_%yr%%mm%%dd%_%hr%%mn%
REM folder where INVOICES is intially
set folder1=d:\folder\where\INVOICES\file\is\located\
REM folder where renamed file is to go
set folder2=d:\folder\where\renamed\file\is\to\go\
cd /d "%folder1%"
ren INVOICES %newname%
move %newname% "%folder2%"
cd /d %thisfolder%
I'm very close but I'm running into a slight problem with the hr variable. If I run the BAT program before 12 noon the hr variable gets set to " #" with a leading blank. For example, when I ran it just now hr was set to " 7" because it's 7:56 AM here. This causes a problem because the newname variable ends up with an embedded blank which cause the ren statement to fail.

Is there a way to NOT suppress the leading 0 in the hour portion of the time in the set hr command? Or is there a way to replace a blank in hr with a 0 after the value is set?

Thanks again! This may have more to do with your regional settings, but I've always had success with using the date/time command rather than the variable:

Code: [Select]for /f "tokens=1-4 delims=/ " %%i in ('date /t') do (
set yy=%%L
set mm=%%j
set dd=%%k
)
for /f "tokens=1-3 delims=: " %%i in ('time /t') do (
set hh=%%i
set mn=%%j
)

Good luck.

That worked in test when I ran it manually. I've entered the command into my FTP client software to execute the BAT program after the FTP tonight.

Keep your fingers crossed! I'll let you know how it works.

Thanks!Quote

If I run the BAT program before 12 noon the hr variable gets set to " #"

I think you mean 10 am?

Anyway apologies for the omission

Code: [Select]@echo off

REM remember current folder
set thisfolder=%cd%

set mm=%date:~0,2%
set dd=%date:~3,2%
set yr=%date:~6,4%
set hr=%time:~0,2%
set mn=%time:~3,2%

REM if 1ST character of hour is a space
REM replace with a zero
if "%hr:~0,1%"==" " set hr=0%hr:~1,1%

set newname=INV_%yr%%mm%%dd%_%hr%%mn%

REM folder where INVOICES is intially
set folder1=d:\folder\where\INVOICES\file\is\located\

REM folder where renamed file is to go
set folder2=d:\folder\where\renamed\file\is\to\go\

cd /d "%folder1%"
ren INVOICES %newname%
move %newname% "%folder2%"

REM return to
cd /d "%thisfolder%"Yes, you're correct, I did mean 10 AM - not 12 noon. I thought about that afterwards. :-o

By the way, on that server the day name is actually the first thing returned from the date so I had to tweak those set statements a little bit as follows:

set mm=%date:~4,2%
set dd=%date:~7,2%
set yy=%date:~10,4%

Thanks again.

Please helpFirst of all it is not a good idea to run to anti virus programs. They normally don't like each other. Try this from Microsoft support:
Enable hidden and system files in Explorer if you haven't done so already. To do this, open Control Panel | Folder Options | View, and in Advanced Settings under Hidden Files and Folders, select "Show hidden files and folders," Below that, uncheck "Hide protected operating system files." (You will probably want to restore this option later.)
From Start | Run, type %SystemRoot%\inf and press Enter.
Find the file named sr.inf. Right click on it and select Install.
You may be prompted for your Windows installation media, or a directory on your hard drive that has the \i386 folder. If you installed Service Pack 2 (as opposed to INSTALLING a version of Windows XP with SP2 preinstalled), use the folder %SystemRoot%\ServicePackFiles\i386 .

First of all it is not a good idea to run to anti virus programs.

Two (2) antivirus programs can be just as bad, if not worse, than none at all. It can be DIFFICULT trying to uninstall an antivirus because some of them just hang in there with tenacity. But, for best results, pick the one you like the best and uninstall the other(s). You will be amazed at the difference in performance.

I'm running on a HP DV1000 series notebook and have a Samsung PATA 80GB hard drive with 2 GB of RAM. When I installed XP on my old hard drive (which is a seperate post in itself) it worked FINE but I have loads of PROBLEMS now. Any help?

ThanksAnd I forgot to add that when shutting down, Stand By is no longer an OPTION...Re-INSTALL the MBoard drivers on the driver CD that shipped with the machine.
If this brings no joy-joy you MAY be looking at a Repair/clean install of XP.
Let us know.thanks...I'll give it a shot

Solve : Need to restrict users access/privileges. (Several questions actually)?

Answer»

Hello, my first post here on the forums. ^__^
I read the FAQ Database, couldn't find anything there I believe in regards to my questions so I decided to post.

Anyways I work at a local drop-in center for YOUTHS and in the center we have a computer lab with 12 computers or so. And my questions are in regards to restricting user access/privileges such as;

- How do disable right-click so that they can not save pictures onto the hard drive? as well as prevent them from changing the wallpaper.

- Are there any programs that can record MSN conversations so I know who they are TALKING to online?

- They often play online games such as Gunz the Duel (which you also have to download), I don't have a problem with them playing it however if they are on the 'student' account it says 'you do not have the privileges to RUN this program' or so, is there any way to allow this? (But not allow them to download anything else in the future?)
-- So how can I allow them to download something (of my choice by lifting the restriction), but always allow them to run the program, even after I put the downloading restriction back up?

- Sort of big questions here, how do I set up a LAN or a game server? (so we can play like Command and Conquer, Worms Armaggedon, etc) All I know is that all the computers in the room is hooked up to one router.

- Example: the password for the student account is lets say 'book', which I would want to keep, but if you press alt+ctrl+delete it brings you to a new screen, with change password, task manager, log off, shut down, and well there are 6 options total. How do I prevent them from changing the password?

- Any other recommendations in regards to monitoring a computer lab, or what they do on a computer? (Have anti-virus, anti-spyware, I believe a firewall already)

Thank you very much for your time. ^__^ Okay to some what answer this. It depends what operating system is installed eg windows 2000,xp...

There are programs that can record msn yahoo ect but I can not lease the information.

There is away to block downloading but I'm not sure how as for the accounts its CAUSE there limited an blocking those sites. You have to approve them.

Sorry if it wasnt much helpAll computer are running on Windows XP.

Also another questions:
- Where can I find the serial number on the computer? (As the previous computer administrator lost the orginal installation CD's and was planning on contacting Dell and ask if they could send a few copies.)To disable right click, log onto the account where you want to disable right click: Start -> Run -> Regedit -> HKEY_CURRENTUSERS\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Right click on the right side (Under 'Name") and create a new DWORD value named NoViewContextMenu. Assign it a value of 1.

To prevent the users from changing their passwords: Log on with an account that has Administrative rights. Go to Start -> Control Panel -> Switch to Classic View (if it's not already) -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Local Users and Groups -> Users -> select the user account -> Right Click -> Properties -> put a check in "user cannot change password"

The easiest thing would be to reinstall windows (and all drivers). TRY contacting HP support and see if they'll send you a CD. Dell was willing to send me one (after I gave them the computer's serial number).
If HP won't send you one a disk from a different OEM will probably work with your CD key (my company has a bunch of Lenovo laptops and the Dell cd works for them.Quote from: Yendor2k3 on May 22, 2008, 11:12:20 AM

You could always remove the drive and install it in another working system as a slave drive and run it from there....
Actually at this point i would recommend the FREE diagnostics from that drive manuf. website as they are a bit more extensive than Windows chkdsk...
These will run from the bootable CD you create with the DLoaded utility and won't involve Windows in any way...HI Yendor2k3 ,

B. Be sure to use a good anti-virus program and that you update the definitions on a regular basis.

naresh.techie: What conclusive evidence do you have that proves the presence of the MSBlaster worm on this person's computer!?

Solve : I think my registry is messed up?

Answer»

I think registry booster from uniblue has messed up my registry... certain things arent working.. is there a way to fix this and how? I have windows Xp home edition It' better to leave registry alone...too late
What is HAPPENING? Be specific. I ran out of crystal balls. As far as I know...all registry repair software usually come with the option to backup the registry...in case something like this happens.

They'll either ask you to perform a backup of the registry prior to fixing...or they will create a restore point.

Did you do this prior to fixing the registry...and if so...have you tried restoring the registry or performing a restore to a date prior to the problem?I tryed USING the restore thing but nothing happens... When i turn on my computer all these erros pop up like cannot run external dll or something like that other stuff If you have made changes to the registry...and performing a restore has not resolved the issue...then you may have inadvertently damaged the registry beyond repair.

If you are stating there are several programs that will not respond anymore...you may be forced to perform a clean install. That would be my suggestion.

WARNING!
However, before you even attempt a clean install...and have access to all of your important files, documents, etc., etc...I would back them up prior to performing the clean install.

I'd also wait for other techs to reply to your post...before attempting a complete reinstall of the OS.

Problems with making registry changes...and not knowing exactly what it is you are changing or removing means yo may have several problems with software that may not respond as they did before. This means you could be performing troubleshooting tasks on many programs...which, in turn, will take QUITE a bit of time.

Either a recovery...or re-installation of the operating system, to me...would be your best bet.I'm afraid, that without exact INFO what is happening, we won't be able to help you. We're not there. We can't see your computer.

Solve : Windows Explorer freezes intermittently?

Answer»

Hi All!

I am on a netework of around 400 computers. OS & McAfee Antivirus is updated regularly.

I have a peculiar problem with my system.

Once or twice in every 2months it becomes nonresponsive and this condition remains unchanged for about a week. When I try to open a file from explorer or desktop, the system freezes for 3-4 minutes. This happens even when some file or shortcut is right clicked. For example If I open excel and from excel if the file is opened it works well no freezes! The files are opened in normal way from the applications. The problem is only when launching something from the explorer or desktop. It becomes OK by itself after a week or so.

I tried to find if there are any spywares/malwares with Mcafee / symantec norton scans. No problems were reported. Defragmenting ALSO didnot have any affect on this. I have a 160GB harddisk with 3 partitions in which a total of around 20 GB is used. My IT admin is helpless. Could someone POINT out what EXACTLY could be triggering this situation and how to solve this.

HI 2 U,

Tell me that is it happen with all Network Computers ?
As you said this problem occures once or twice in a month, and become all right by itself ... is it right ?
all Computers are connected with Internet ?Hi,
Thanks for looking in to my problem.

- No it does not happen to all the computers. It is only to MINE.
- Yes this problem occurs occassionally and troubles me for some days and disappears.
-Yes all computers are connected to internet.

I have shared one partition (F:\) with some of my colleagues on the network. I checked the startup processes with Autoruns utility to see if there are any suspicious processes and found none.are you suffring this prob now ?
Reply me...
If your computer goes like that again, 1st Run TASK MANAGER then open your application, keep watching on processes tab in TaskManger while opening your application, which Process takes maximum processor usage..?

No major changes in memory usage noticed. When I look at the performance monitor graph CPU usage is Zero before and after the is clicked. It shows some usage when the file OPENS. I suspect something which links the explorer interface is not working properly. Keeping the taskmanger with the performance tab in view and clicking the clicking the files has no effect till the file opens.

Is this in regards to Internet EXPLORER?

What version?

With an older version of IE here, I can load IE, then click on File, then click on Import and Export .
Import/Export WIZARD window opens.
Follow the directions.

Let us know if that works for you.

Open your CD recording program, click on "make DATA disc" button, browse to the favourites folder, (Normally C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Favorites), add what ever is required and burn.

Or

you can directly browse the above mentioned folder, copy the folder and directly paste it on to the blank CD. The problem with method is you will only be able to use this CD with CDRW/DVDRW drive. You will not be to use it with NORMAL CDROM/DVDROM

Solve : Running a PRISM Package within a BATCH FILE?

Answer»

Hello All,

Does anyone know how I can run a PRISM Package File (ex: easycheck.pwc)
from within a BATCH File? I"m stuck on this!

I'm trying the following:

------------------------------------------
@echo OFF
echo.
echo Press [ENTER] to run the EasyCheck PRISM Package...
echo.
PAUSE
START C:\progra~1\newbou~1\Client\ptclient.exe EasyCheck.pwc
CLS
------------------------------------------

Note: The .pwc EXTENSION is already associated with the PRISM Program.

Any HELP is Appreciated!

Thanks,
Tony (aka bronx27)

if you drop off the EasyCheck.pwc from this, does the ptclient launch?

START c:\progra~1\newbou~1\Client\ptclient.exe

If it does launch try the following bound with ""

START c:\progra~1\newbou~1\Client\ptclient.exe "EasyCheck.pwc"

*Also do you really need the START command to open in seperate WINDOW...try dropping off the START

c:\progra~1\newbou~1\Client\ptclient.exe EasyCheck.pwc

Dave,

I"ve tried many different combinations of this, including the ones
that you've suggested. As far as the PTCLIENT.exe running, it already
runs in the background and the little icon is on the bottom right-hand
corner of the taskbar, next to the time display. So the app is ALWAYS running
in the background.

I figured if you associate the .pwc extension to the "correct" program, it should
just run and/or work. But, it doesn't seem to in this batch file. I can simply double-click
the easycheck.pwc and it runs just fine. I just want to automate this process along w/others
within the same batch file.

I appreciate your response.

Thanks for the Reply!
Tony
Does this service have an INI file etc to where you can use a list of INI files to designate what to execute on start of the service?

Then you can

NET STOP PTCLIENT

*swap the INI files from a list of specific PWCs and drop the one you want to load into the root of the PTCLIENT folder and when the service starts back up with the ...

NET START PTCLIENT

It should run what you want? This is if the service has an INI file that will allow for you to do this for default starting parameters for the service.

Then you could write a batch that stops the service and swaps the INI files from a list of all PWCs you want to run and starts and stops service to trigger them through default startup INI parameters.

Dave,

Good suggestion, however, there is NO service that runs for
this application, nor are their any .ini files.
It simply runs the PTCLIENT.exe and runs in the background.

The program only contains 3 files in it's folder.
"c:\program files\new boundry\client".

eminvcli.exe
ptclient.exe
ptclient.chm (Help File)

Thanks,
Tony
hmm...that really doesnt leave room for much.... at this point I would use a GUI Macro Recorder like jitbit's Macro Recorder which I use for problems like this that you want to automate, but of which the application cant take arguments or an INI file to specify what to run.

Program is great, however you will need to execute it on a system after hours or a dedicated system on hours to avoid the macro competing with the user if a scheduled task which appears to be what you are looking to do. You simply command the recorder to record your activities and then tell it to stop. You can then compile this macro as a stand alone EXE, and add it to a scheduled event. It costs money, but was worth every penny I paid for it. Absolutely perfect for GUI automation.

Dave,

I will take your suggestion into consideration. I appreciate your advice.

Solve : Outlook 2007?

So I know there are threads on this everywhere, but I cant get Outlook 2007 to show up with my trial version. It says not available when I go in through Add/ Remove programs. I know you have to get rid of outlook for 2003 for it to work. I got rid of all of my OFFICE 2003 and it still will not allow me to use outlook.

Can any one help, I cant find any trace of an OLDER outlook in my system.Get CCleaner, run it, and then try to install Outlook 2007 again. Get the Slim version of CCleaner >here<. Run it's WINDOWS scan and have CCleaner remove all the stuff it finds. Likewise, run the Registry scan and Fix all items found. When running the Registry scan, backup your registry when prompted. nothin... by REINSTALL do you mean go into the Add/Remove and try to add it?(which is what I did) It still says Outlook is unavailable in red?

Solve : Computer Busted after Reformat?

Computer Specs: HP Pavilion 542x
Windows XP

Hey everybody,

I need help on my pc, so...
When I start up my computer, right away I get an error on my desktop saying,
"C:\Documents and Settings/Owner/Desktop is not accessible.
Access is Denied."

as well when I try to install a program I get an error saying,
"Setup was unable to create the directory "C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\is-TLETI.tmp
Error 5: Access is denied."

and this happened after I reformatted my computer due to an infection(I believe it was a TROJAN).

Any suggestions would really mean a lot. Thanx in advance. So you did a clean install of XP ? ?

Well, I don't think so because I don't recall a HP Driver CD coming with the machine.

Want to add I have never re-install a MBoard drive w/ HP Driver CD.

In your title you said you did a reformat.
Formatting ERASES everything on the drive so if you did do this you would boot to an error message and/or a blank screen...
Explain what exactly you did and we can go from there...
In answer to the 2nd question just describe what it says on your Windows and or HP CD's so we know what we're dealing with.

As far as the Driver CD all machines ship them...however all is not lost as we can run diagnostics on the machine to determine what drivers are needed...but the machine needs to be able to boot to Windows (not always ) first.

So LET us know what exactly you have tried so far and what the machine is doing now...Ok, I retraced my steps and what I actually did was a System Recovery pressing F10 many times after the computer starts sending me to HP PC System Recovery-whoops, sorry about the confusion.

The answer to your 2nd ? is that it starts normally with what I replied before and its Windows XP HOME Edition Version 5.1. I hope this will help.

ALSO, I found a CD but I think its for my printer, this is what it has on it HP PSC 1400-1600 CD version 4.7.1 and its scratched a little bit.

Not a PROBLEM. You should be able to get the device drivers from your computer manufacturer or your sound card manufacturer's web site.

If you are unsure of the make/model of your sound card, right click "My Computer" and then go to "Properties." On the "Hardware" tab and click the "Device Manager" button. Once you have the Device Manager open, you can usually find the information under the category that says "Sound, video and GAME controllers."

Good luck.well, there's a yellow question mark next to "audio device on high definition audio bus" but when i go to reinstall it, it says the software cannot be found.Answer these questions for me.

1. What is the make of your computer? (Dell, Gateway, HP)
2. What is the model of your computer? (Optiplex, Presario)
3. What are all the items listed under the "Sound, video and game controllers?"DLoad , install and run Everest Home...
Run a scan and save the Computer Summary as a text file...
Post it here and we'll help TRACK down your drivers...i have a dell vostro 200, and all the items under it are the audio bus thing then another audio thing is all legacy audio driversIf it's a Dell they make it very easy...
Travel to their site and enter the Service Tag # off the back of the machine...
All your drivers will be listed.
DLoad and install the sound/audio device drivers.

Solve : help .. XP won't let me log in?

Answer»

Hi all .. never encountered a problem like this and hoping for some help from more experienced heads. I was "fixing" my sisters LAPTOP, which had multiple malware and spyware problems. Used spybot to scan and fix all and all seemed well until I re-booted. Now I get to XP login but can get no further. WHICHEVER user I click on (inc Administrator in safe mode), it SHOWS the desktop background but no icons and then automatically logs me out - back to login. Same problem in safe mode, and I can't revert to last GOOD configuration - same problem there. Any help/ tips gratefully received. PeterDo you have the Windows CD?

If so, perform a Repair Install:
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htmThanks - My sister is searching for the CD that came with the machine but no sign yet.Quote

Download Windows Recovery Console: http://www.thecomputerparamedic.com/files/rc.iso
Download, and install free Imgburn: http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download
Using Imgburn, burn rc.iso to a CD.
Boot to the CD...let it finish loading.
When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.
Then, follow the steps from here: http://icrontic.com/articles/repair_windows_xp, starting below this picture on page 1:

Thanks BroniThanks JJ3000. I really appreciate the advice. I have followed all your instructions - made cd - run windows recovery following instructions and all seemed well. However, when I boot now I have a new error message:
The following file is missing or corrupt - Minint\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

Any ideas much appreciated

Solve : the 34 minute windows xp install hang?

Answer»

Hi, I'm stuck at the 34minute point(last time was 33minutes to) during the XP recovery process where its installing devices.

I'm looking for solutions. The harddrive had windows on it and a bunch of files but it stopped booting when I carried it over to another motherboard with SIGNIFICANTLY different hardware(new mobo, graphics, ram, processor etc.) the old mobo locked me out of my system due to a stuck keyboard error.

Tried recovery console and used the bootcfg /rebuild command, didn't work. Tried the fixmbr command and it gave me a warning that my partitions may not be accessible if its done and since I don't want to lose the files I have in 3 volumes on the harddrive I didn't go through with it. I'm thinking of trying fixboot c: command but I wanna know will it DELETE all the important files I have on that volume?

Any suggestions on how to fix this problem would be APPRECIATED.
Specs just incase:
Motherboard: PcChips P17G/1333
Chipset: 945GC Northbridge & ICH7 Southbridge
Processor: Pentium Dual Core 5200
Ram: Kingston DDR 2 800mhz(I think it'll run at 667mhz due to the motherboard having that maximum)
VIDEO: Currently using the motherboard's integrated graphics.

Currently tinkering with bios settings but to no avail.Let me get this right. You are trying a repair install to a Windows installation which was done on, essentially, a different computer. It has hung twice at the same (significant) stage of the process. Don't you think that this may be nature's way of telling you that this bird won't fly?

I don't think the fixboot thing would damage the files but you are going to have to reinstall Windows from scratch so maybe you should bite the bullet.

Solve : HELP! cant boot my eeepc?

Answer»

hi all...
i got an asus eeepc1000 a little bit ago, and i somehow got a MUNDO or vundo virus, which i was ABLE to get rid of. but i still didnt trust the computer to go to financial sites, etc. until i reformatted it. today i tried to do that. i have the system restore disk and and external cdrom(since the netbook doesnt have an optical drive)...the computer had been able to boot up and power down, etc. but when i tried to tell it to boot from the cdrom by hitting f9 during startup(as asus people told me to do) it went to the black bootup screen that tells u to do safe mode, last configs, etc. I tried all of these and all it will do is show the windows xp startup with the bar for a few seconds...then it goes to the blue screen for a split second, then back to the black screen with safe mode options.
Please help me...i just want to reformat it so i can get back to using it for school
Thanks!also i have scanned with many different anti malware and antivirus programs and they all say the computer is clean. How did you reformat it ? ?
What Windows version did you put on there.? ?
Last i heard they wouldn't run a full ver. of XP but i have been mistaken in the past...sorry, LET me clarify.
asus eeepc 1000hd
windows xp home edition ulcpc

i was trying to boot it up so that i could reformat it...with the external cdrom. but since it wont start up, i cannot do a system recoveryIf this is an external USB cd drive...configure BIOS to boot from the external USB device.I cant even get to the bios without it going straight to the safe mode option screenYa you need to set it in the BIOS to run from usbI'm not sure how to do that. could u please give me directions.
i hit f2 to get to system setup...and then under boot priority i hit enter on the usb one..and then saved and exit...is there something else i should have DONE?
thanks guys! The usb is set 1st above all others?no it is still third...i clicked enter on it and then enter again...and it didnt change it...not sure how to move it to firstfigured it out....now i feel like a complete idiot!
