Solve : what reg bits to turn off?

Hi

Used computers for years but never altered things inside.
As more viruses ect are coming, what is the best way to PROTECT yourself.
run win XP Sp2, Norton AV, P4, Using IE7 now.

how to stop background progs running.

how to stop background progs running.

Which programs?

Norton is okay but quite heavy on resources - when your subscription is about to run out, check back here for RECOMMENDATIONS for free AV's. (Currently, I like Avast!: anti-virus, anti-spyware, anti-rootkit: http://www.avast.com/eng/download.html) Never run more than one AV at a time. Run a scan weekly or, at LEAST, monthly.

I'm not familiar with "P4" - what is it?

Firefox is a browser that many people believe is more secure than IE: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/

To supplement the protection of your anti-virus, anti-spyware program consider: Spywareblaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html), Threatfire (http://www.threatfire.com/), SuperAntispyware (SAS) (http://www.superantispyware.com/). None of these should conflict with Norton.

I would use the free version of SAS and scan at least monthly.

This, of course, is just my opinion - keep checking back to see what other forum members think.

Best of luck!

EDIT: And be sure that you keep the OS PATCHED and run a firewall - at least Window's firewall, Norton's, or Comodo (http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/)

NEVER run more than one firewall at a time.

Solve : document views?

Answer»

hey I'm pretty NEW to this site, was WONDERING if its possible to see when a document/folder was VIEWED, like does it come up with how many times its been viewed and if so, when? Please reply I'm desperate as there is a very serious accusation going round at work against myself, I need EVIDENCE to prove my innocence before I lose my job.
is there any way? What operating system is it?

I dont think you can without software, but I'm not sure. You could maybe just go to "RECENT Documents"?well. assuming it's windows, and maybe a relatively up to date version, here's what to do.

right click file / document > properties > check the accessed time.

this only displays the last accessed time, and not previous access times.

Solve : May tip of the month question??

How do I know if my computer has a multiple CORE processor or not? Since I have a 2002 Dell Dimension 4500, I will assume that it does not have the Intel Core 2.

In fact I think it is a Pentium 4 chip if that makes any sense. Is there any way to speed up the boot time on these older computers? press windows key and pause/break button at the same timeSir, I can see the pause/break key but where is the "Windows" key located?

Also what will this do for me or show me? kinda funny its the key next to ALT says start
it shows BASIC info about ur computer
like ram model processor that fun stuff It will show you if you have a single core or dual core processor, like you had asked.Quote from: Mr. Detail on May 12, 2009, 12:05:03 PM

Not much you can do to speed up the Pentium 4. There are some things you can do to reduce the Windows XP load time.
Buy a new, better hard drive. Put in you computer and do a full install of Windows XP. Then install only the programs you really need and use. The boot time will be much better when you are done.

Get you data off of the OLD drive. Make it a slave drive.

Solve : major, weird problem (windows crashes linux doesn't)?

Answer»

Hi all
if you can fix this, you are GOOD. a lot of forums and computer shop people don't know what's wrong, but maybe you can help!

system: Windows XP 32-bit Pro (all updates till december 2008) (and dual boot with openSuse 11.0)
HDD: 320GB S-ATA samsung spinpoint
CPU: AMD Athlon x64 5200+
mobo: ASUS M2N (standard)
GPU: nvidia geforce 8500 GT
mem: 2+1 GB Apacer CL.5 DDR2 RAM

problem:[/b]
when using windows, my pc often freezes and requires reboot. It's very weird though: when a browser window is active, things like javascript countdown timers KEEP GOING and when i minimize an application, it WORKS or when i single click on a desktop icon it TURNS BLUE but when i try to open anything, click anything, maximize any window or do anything else, i get an hourglass mouse pointer and from that moment on i can do NOTHING but move my mouse. my pc is STUCK and i have to reboot.

That's not so bad when it happens once in a month, but this happens every day a few times now, somtimes even when only botting windows! (hangs during load screen. the progress bar keeps going but no progress is made).
another weird thing is that my little red light on my case that starts burning/flickering when you pc is 'working hard' goes completely black. normally it flickers at least every 2 or 3 seconds when my pc is idle, to burning for whole seconds when loading a big program. when my pc crashes in it's weird way, the light won't go on anymore.

Some people said it has to do something with my RAM. they told me to unplug the socket, press power button a few times, then replug the socket and boot. that worked the first TIME! i was able to continue for a few months, then BAM it hit me again. they then told me to also remove my RAM during the mentioned process, and that worked too, but again, after a month, it happened AGAIN. sad thing is, NOTHING works anymore, wether i remove the RAM or not.

Another strange thing: THIS DOESN'T HAPPEN ON LINUX! i have opensuse 11.0 and it never had any problems with it! so i thought "oh well a bad windows install" but NO: i installed 3 or 4 different xp versions now and none worked all gave me the same crash in the end.

FAILED solutions:
-memtest86+ to check RAM
-remove a RAM unit (i have 2 so i removed 1 and tested the other and vice versa, didnt make any difference)
-HDD check
-unplug socket and press power button etc.
-flash BIOS
-reïnstall windows
-reformat HDD
-update drivers
-... maybe some more i can't remember right now

PLEASE if you are able to help, do it, because i need it badly school year's end is near and if i don't have my pc available for my final tests... >.>

THANK YOU

Joris

i guess it would. i can buy another brand, but if that doesn't work... =/ i can afford some more RAM, but it would be bad if it wouldn't help...

maybe is should get some from a friend to test... thanks for the tip - i'll update you Just noticed you've got 32 bit Windows on 64 bit hardware. Hardware driver issues could be a factor.

1. wouldn't driver issues cause constant trouble? (my system used to work fine for periods of like 3 months+)
2. im 99% sure my chipset driver cd includes 32-bit versions... or doesn't that matter?

I arranged some DDR2 units with a friend. if they work for a week (or 2 if he can miss them) i will post here, if not im gonna be here sooner, and try to find out more about driver issues.

it says "You may install a maximum of 2 GB DIMMs on each slot, but only DDR2-533 and DDR2-667 2 GB density modules are available for this configuration."
i have one 1GB DIMM and one 2GB DIMM, both are able to run at 800MHz. does this mean i should let bios put a LIMIT of 667 on it?
another strange thing: when i let bios put the limit on let's say 400MHz, it says its only at 200 when i then reboot (it says so in the system overview, the settings are still at 400 when i check them). its's always only half the value of the settings. is that normal?

and: my brand of RAM (Apacer) is not in the qualified vendors list, but that shouldn't always cause trouble, should it... by the way, the qualified list only shows RAM up to 1024MB per unit. and i have a 2GB unit :p Quote from: joris20 on May 11, 2009, 01:42:08 PM

Not always, but it is quite possible, and if it does, you only have yourself to blame. I found this out the hard way with a Shuttle barebones kit: Those lists exist for a reason.

Solve : Constant new updates on Windows?

Answer»

Hi:

I have a Dell, Windows XP, 2002, Service Pack 2. I had my computer professionally cleaned, increased memory, and got a new virus program (Avast). Now, every time I shut down, Windows informs me I have an update. This has happened dozens and dozens of times: is it a problem? Will it ever END? Thanks.

No,

This is not a problem. But, this does take some space on your hard drive. If you find this annoying, go to START > CONTROL PANEL > CLASSIC VIEW > SECURITY CENTER > CLICK WINDOWS UPDATE AND TURN IT TO 'OFF'.

That will stop that,

Miles M. Go to windows update and get all of the UPDATES that are available for your computer.

Click Start then choose All Programs, then select Windows Update. It will scan your computer and list all available updates. Install all of them. then restart and go BACK to windows update. You will have to resart a few times. Just keep going back until it stops finding updates for your computer. This will probably take a few hours.

After you have done this, you will receive updates only once or TWICE a month.
Good luck!Quote

Solve : Computer Shuts off when trying to Reinstall Windows xp?

Answer»

I have had some PROBLEMS recently trying to reinstall windows xp. I want to reinstall my operating system and start from SCRATCH but my system completely turns off when I try.
I have the original OS disc that came with my computer and the product key as well.

Here is what happens:
1- turn on the comp with the CD in the drive
2- A series of blue screens pop up and the disc is spinning
3- it asks me if I want to repair or & press R or (start new) press ESC.
4- I press Esc. and it asks about partitioning the drive and somewhere around this point or the next step the machine just shuts off

It is not over heating it just happens at this spot all the time - if I don't try and reinstall it just keeps running so like I said it is not an overheating issue.

How can I get past & through this to reinstall my windows xp

Please help
SerenityGently clean that CD with a lint free cloth...
If it still does this you may have to run chkdsk /r on that hard drive.
This can be done by loading the Recovery Console from the XP CD...I tried the lint free cloth - didn't work-

Would it MAKE a difference if I try and install in safe mode? the whole reason I'm doing this is due to a recent virus I can't get rid of

How do I LOAD the Recovery Console from the XP?i dont think a regular virus could infect your pc that hard it screws fresh installs, but if i were you i would first do a low-level format with Hirens BootCD http://www.hiren.info/pages/bootcd

wait - before you try low-level (it takes long) try a regular one first. make a clean format before you choose to delete and reinstall windows.

if this fails, try ANOTHER install cd of any OS and see if it works.

Solve : won't open attachments?

Answer»

My computer will not open attachments. When I click to open an attachment out of my EMAIL (yahoo mail) or any downloads from the internet it goes through the motions ASKING me if I would like to open or save the file. When I click either one it looks as if it is GOING to open/save but then does nothing. I have checked the internet options on my computer and it is enabled to download files. Any suggestions? What operating system are you RUNNING? Do you have a firewall installed? If there is a firewall, it could be that your firewall is blocking the actual download of documents. If it turns out to be your firewall is the culprit, you may have to change your settings or add certain sites as "OKAY" so your firewall allows these documents to come thru.

Solve : How to install windows XP buy using network Connection???

Good Day to all,

I would like to ask if someone know how to install an operating system through networking. I'm a student in PHILIPPINES and my teacher ask me to search for a topic on how to install an os USING only network connection. From server to a pc with a blank hard disk..

Pls help.Wow great your a filipino too. Well, i haven't seen an OS being installed through a network since all the time we use bootable CD my friend. But is it possible? If s/he's asking because s/he doesn't have any optical drives on the machine, it would be easier and cheaper to simply buy a new internal (or external if supported by BIOS) optical DRIVE. Would save a TON of time, and you would have the thing for future use.He is searching for a TOPIC.http://www.itpro.co.uk/88300/setting-up-an-unattended-network-windows-xp-install

Solve : Win Screen Saver help?

Answer»

I am running Win XP PRO and I have Win Screen Saver turned off.

But every now and then when I go away from my Desktop and come back my Monitor is Black and the Win Xp Logo is Floating around it.
Then if I hit a Key on the Keyboard or move the Mouse the Screen goes back to the Lagon Screen and I have to Login again.

What is this and how do I make it stop?
ThanksRight Click the Desktop and go to Properties.
Hit the Screensaver tab and change the screensaver to NONE.
Also, uncheck the checkbox under it.Also check your computers power saving settings. Some times your computer will go in to a 'lock computer' mode if you leave it alone for a while. This just shuts off the screen and powers down non essential systems but also takes you to the log in screen. If it's doing this then you have a screensaver enabled....Yes you are right my Limited account had Screen Saver turned on but my account had it turned of.
So I turned both off and it is ok thanks.OK I turned off Screen Saver in my ADMIN and Limited accounts and it was working and not going on.

But a fue days after I walked away from the computer and cam back and the win xp logo was onscreen floating aroung again.

I whent into both accounts and the Screen Saver is Turned off.

What is going on??I'm just having a guess mate but this no longer sounds LIKE a screen saver. It sounds more like your PC is going into an energy saving mode... Have you checked your energy saving settings?Quote from: Mulreay on May 03, 2009, 04:30:50 PM

And to day I left my computer for a long time and when I came back it never whent into Screen Saver.

So it seems ok now but it did go into Screen Saver ther other day??Did you uncheck the box in the screensaver tab by any CHANCE?Yes?Well it should work fine. I don't know what the problem is.Thanks for the help it does work but that one day I cam back to the computer it was on and I did not know why. I gess it is just one of these goofy things thanks again.OK I whent into my Limited account and foundout that the Power Setting for Monitor was set to Turn Off After 20 Min. So I whent to try to change it to never just like I have it in my Admin account.

And a Window comes up saying I can do it.
Help???Maybe it's because you're on a Limited account.

Does the screen turning off after 20 minutes really matter?

Solve : Q: How to disable/enable a device on the fly??

Answer»

Hi Guys,
I've got a Dell LATITUDE D830 laptop that has a built in (officially UNDISCLOSED) microphone that I want to be able to enable or disable with an icon to a simple batch file. Right now the only way to disable it is by GOING into the BIOS or going in the Device Manager and disable it there.

I only need it when I want to use Skype, otherwise I want to turn it off i.e. disable it.

Can someone tell me how can you enable or disable a device from the command line?

Geza
Double Clicking the speaker icon in the SYSTEM tray and muting the microphone is not good enough?
Why on earth would you need to disable the microphone?

By disabling it in the BIOS, you are completely removing the microphone from the start-up procedure. You cannot do this 'on the fly' within Windows. From what my laptop does... I have two microphones one next to the keyboard and one next to my ear where I have pushed the Mic extension back too. There only activated if I tell them to be. I don't think you can de-activate something that is not switched on? Do you think someone is listening in on your conversations?

Solve : Windows Media player plays very fast?

Answer»

Hi, I'm trying to fix up an older Intel Pentium lll COMPUTER for my BROTHER. It's running XP Home. I transferred a bunch of MP3's along with some home movies and some PowerPoint slide shows. Some of the MP3's, movies and most of the slide shows have the SOUND playing very fast. I've checked the speed on WMP and it's set to normal. It will play any CD at normal speed. I checked the Device Manager and EVERYTHING looks good there. The sound card is Creative PCI and I'm in the process of downloading the newest drivers. At first I thought that the files were being corrupted when I transferred them with my memory stick so I burned them all to a data disc and transferred them that way with no improvement. The strange thing is that when I play the files from the disk or the stick they also play fast but when I play them back on my PC they play at normal speed. Does anyone have any idea what's causing this? Don't know whether this will help you out, but it's worth a look

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/knowledgecenter/howto/PlayFaster_how_to.aspxThanks, Karnac but that doesn't work for me. I can slow it down but the voice is too high for Alan Jackson. I have to think there's something wrong with the sound card. I downloaded the latest version of drivers and I'll give that a try. If that doesn't work, I'll borrow another sound card and try that.Try this...
1. In Control Panel, open Sounds and Audio Devices.

2. On the Volume tab, in the Speaker settings area, click the Advanced button.

3. In the Advanced Audio Properties dialog box, click the Performance tab, and then adjust the Hardware acceleration slider control to adjust the CLOCK timing for your sound card. Thanks, Mulreay but this doesn't have any effect on the way it plays. I re-seated the sound card but no change. I'm really starting to suspect the sound card because the sound is really noisy and I don't remember it being like that when I first worked on this computer. Is it possible that the sound card is not compatible with Windows XP?Maybe pull the sound card and see if the onboard sound does the same.Yeah Karnac may be worth using the onboard sound just to test...Well, I changed the sound card and everything plays at normal speed. ThanksGood to hear mate.

Solve : Diskette drive 0 seek failure?

Answer»

I am working on a Dell (yuk) Dimension 2400. Here is some info.
BIOS, as BEST I can tell from the CHIP and Setup. SST 49LF004B (from chip) Ver. A05 (from setup.)
MOBO Intel D865gbf, or Foxconn LS-36, can't get part number from Dell (imagine that)
Chipset 845GV
CPU Celeron 2.4 Ghz

Basically, all I did was put the HDD and CD/DVD recorders from a Dimension 4600 in place of the existing hardware. It took a few tries with the BIOS to get it to boot, but it booted and was working well.

Then my sis decided she wanted XP PRO instead of the XP Media Center. So I wiped the HDD with killdisk. And from there it all went South.

When I try to install XP PRO I get Quote

Diskette drive 0 seek failure

I assumed it was looking for a non-existant floppy, so I went into BIOS and made sure that
the floppy option was disabled and that CD/DVD was my first boot choice. All my drives show up in setup. Bios also says "Floppy Drive(Not installed), and the Floppy is unchecked. Unfortunately I can't completely remove the Floppy from the boot list.

No beeps on startup, and all diagnostic lights are green. If I let it sit awhile I get
Quote
=======TRAP 0000000D - General Protection FAULT=======

Among the several other things it says on the same screen are Quote
errcode=2BD0 NoCy
NoZr IntDis Down TrapDis.

This seems as if it should be easy, but I cant figure it out. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Well...DUH. Looked in BIOS again and checked Drive CONFIG. Found Floppy, and changed it to "not installed"We thank you for your post.
That's how most of the rest of us learn this stuff. Classroom is fine, but classroom only goes so far...

Solve : Installing xp not orginal disk?

Answer»

okay youd's said a while ago that I can use a differnt xp disk for my gamer and it work the same. Thing is that I am not getting were you have to put the key in. Sould I end up CALLING them and try it that WAY? LOST!!!In your next reply, type slower.I do say youd's at times okay. But at any rate you all said that it would work as long as I used the key that came with the other one. The ones I have both came from Dell not sure if that makes a huge differnce.I am unable to understand what you are asking, nor am I able to figure out what "youd's" is, so I'll just make up a reply.

If you have lost your Windows XP CD, you can borrow a new one (i.e. from a friend). w/e I have one. The thing is that the one I had for my gaming is scrathed from what I know. It wont copy certain files and the other two are professional and when I run the install it DOESNT ask for the key. Do you want me to explain with more detail? It doesn't ask for a key? Maybe because it's a pirated copy?
After all, your title does say: Installing xp not orginal diskcauses its not the orginal to this machine. Its probably cause it came with a dell. If it's the Windows XP CD (with the MICROSOFT holograms all over it) it will work for any machine. It was, but SINCE then I had to use ones by dell figured that they wouldnt work then. I didnt want to do this when I last made the post. Solve : Immediately! I'll Pay! Flash Player Won't Run!?

Answer»

I lost my Adobe Flash Player and have spent 3 hours
with Adobe SUPPORT and did everything they suggested.
I used their uninstall program, rebooted, re-installed and
nothing happened. Exept now I'm being asked constantly
whether I want ActiveX or not!

LAST week I messed with the security controlls. I've gone
back and reset everything to default.

I just can't load Flash Player! I need it badly. I'm a professional
gambler and I can't get into my casino's.

I'll pay anyone's PayPal $25 today if they'll get this straightened
out for me! I'll even spend HIGHER if they can help immediately!

Pennie, try a system restore point earlier than when you "messed with the security controls"....see if you can roll things back.

Or

Try download Flash player from here ....

http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/licensing/win/install_flash_player_10_active_x.exe

and put it on a USB stick and transfer it to your computer. Then again the link MIGHT just do it for you.

Solve : Cannot move file/folder from H/Disc to pendrive via USB. Why??

Answer»

Can any ONE tell me what does the error-message mean : Cannot create
or replace xxxx: the directory or file cannot be created.

I tried putting the pendrive in another USB port and it is the same result.
However, there is no problem of moving the same file/folder with another
pendrive in the same port.

Have opened the Device Manager and checked on the properties of
this pendrive. It SAYS :This device is working properly. This apply to all the
other USB lines (Root Hub, etc).

I am using Win XP SP3.Is there anything currently on the pendrive you're trying to copy to?Some USB drives have the option to write protect the contents via a tab or button on the drive kind of like floppy DISCS used to. What is the brand/model of the USB drive? Also the usb stick may be fullThe pendrive is Toshiba 2GB and only half full. I can move file/folder from
said pendrive to H/disk but not the reverse. How big is the file you're trying to move to the pendrive? Was the file DLoaded from the web and/or created on another operating system ? ?Good point, patio...We'll get to the bottom of this....PROBLEM SOLVED!!!

Since I can move stuff out of the pendrive, I did that and then reformat it.
Now I can transfer file/folder from H/disk to pendrive and vice versa.

However, I still cannot understand what triggers the pendrive to set up
the transfer-blockage.

Has any one experienced this weird thing before?

Many thanks, guys.It can be any number of things from being unplugged prematurely; static; malware etc...It can even be the security software that comes with some of the pen drives. My SanDisk came with software that allows me to set the thing to be read only unless I open the software and enter a PASSWORD. Someone might have played a prank on you and done something like that.

I accidentally changed some AVI files to J.PEGs. They won't play now. An error message comes up to say the Codec is not recognised. Is there any way of reversing the files to AVIS? Quote

I accidentally changed some AVI files to J.PEGs.
How?I did a bulk renaming of my files to get the photos to show in a chosen order. I forgot that there were AVI files amongst them, so they got changed to J.PEGS too. I then changed them back to AVI files, but Windows MEDIA Player cannot play the file, and this error message come up - "The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file." I dont like your chancesWhat program was used here ? ?
Details always help...Simple renaming file back, and forth shouldn't damage file's header, where file info resides, but as patio said, it 'd be good to know program's name.
Also, try opening ONE of those avi files in Irfanview (which is pretty good with reading file's header), or/and VLC Player.Normally, if you just rename the filetype (file.avi), you are pretty much just changing what program will open the file, it WONT change the data inside.

Solve : Is it normal for the Windows XP Service Pack 2 update to run...?

Answer»

for about 3 going on 4 hours?

I'm updating my Windows XP COMPUTER, and the Windows XP Service PACK 2 Setup Wizard is going on for many hours.

Is that okay?

It seems to be stuck on performing cleanup, but it seems as if this performing cleanup is the LAST step because it says finishing installation.

I MIGHT just let it run through the night if I have to. Just wondering is this okay/normal for it to go this long.

Also, if I have to cancel the update, is it possible that it would affect my computer in a horrible way? MEANING, would my computer still be able to start up?

I created a system restore point just in case the update doesn't work out in my favor [ ] and I also saw that a checkpoint of the update said creating a restore point so I have two now.

I'd leave it alone overnight.
It doesn't sound normal, but at this point, IMHO, the best option is to wait.Alright, so I let the scan run, and in the end, it said that the update has encountered a problem. I ran an error report and tried to see if they had a way to fix the problem, but unfortunately they did not.

I'm unsure if this incomplete scan has damaged my computer. There isn't any obvious, above the surface signs, but is there a way that I can check further in my computer to make sure it isn't damaged?

Also, I took screen shots just incase you need them SHOWING that the update could not be installed. If it didn't install, it reversed all changes, so no harm done.
As to for why?

Solve : need wireless internet advice?

Answer»

I've had a Linksys router for several years with no problem and I really like it. It's a wireless G router. My notebook computer uses a wireless card to connect to the internet via the router. I knew little about this stuff and my husband didn't either. He bought the wireless card and router the guy at the store RECOMMENDED and it turned out the wireless card was wireless B but it was compatible with the router and I never had a problem with it for several years until recently when I noticed it started dropping the connection and I figured it must need replacing. I looked up some info on the wireless routers and cards and thought I might get a wireless G card since the router is wireless G and I read that's better if they're both the same and you'd get a faster connection. Well apparently not so. In the past I didn't know about the encryption, even though the router supports that, and so I had no WEP or WPA set up on my connection. The new wireless G card supports WPA so I set that up with the router and I switched the channel to channel 8 for broadcasting since I read it's better to not be on the common channel 6 if there are a LOT of people in your area on that channel, because then you'd get a slower connection. Well I guess not a lot of people know about wireless security since all the neighbors around here are still broadcasting SSID and everyone's on channel 6 so that why I switched. I don't know if the new card is just a crappy card or what but I've never had more internet connection issues than I've had lately. It's a linksys brand card as well and is a wireless G card with "speed booster" but I swear my computer is actually running slower with this new card for some reason and the connection drops seemingly every other minute and pauses for about a minute and that cases the browser window to free too (not the computer just the browser window) for the same duration. It's completely frustrating. Everything I read on the wireless SAID wireless G is faster than B and that it was better to be on another channel because a lot of neighborhood traffic on the same channel would cause you to get a slow connection. I had no compatibility problems with my other card (also linksys brand) so I can't understand why this new card causes the computer to be slow now and seems to conflict with my browser. It also does not re-connect if the computer was on standby and I want to use the computer again. My old card would always automatically reconnect but this new card doesn't. I have to select to unplug the card and then take the card out of the slot and push it back in. Sometimes it will reconnect when I do that. Most times it will just instantly freeze the computer and I'll have to restart. So is this just a really sucky card or does setting up wireless security or changing the signal broadcast channel somehow cause a slower connection?

it would help if u gave a little more info:

This is simply not true...Win2K's neworking features are as robust as XP's.
As a matter of fact it was one of it's selling points when 2K came out.

To be honest haus kat if you haven't had it that long i would be returning it for a warranty replacement...it shouldn't be slower than your old card.I've been using Windows 2000 for years and did not have any internet connection problems until recently. The old card started dropping the connection (but not freezing the browser window) so I decided to replace it. Each of the cards came with their own installation software. My computer had actually had problems since installing the new card and it's software. I use Opera browser and it freezes every other minute now and additionally I've had internet explorer problems with the computer too. It seems that the active desktop is hanging for some reason and then really sucking up RAM. It never did that in the past but after I installed the car it's doing that now. When I go to open Adobe PHOTO software and then I find that program won't open and I know that IE is acting up again. I always have to restart teh computer. When I go to retstart I get the predictable error message about Internet Explorer not responding when I wasn't even using that program and then I when I restart the computer I find the active desktop error message and have to click the button to get the wallpaper back up. Sometime my computer is even freezing on start-up now too. I'm convinced the problems are due to that stupid card but I could not figure why it's causing issues. It's ironic that it's the "speed booster" model and yet the connection has never been slower. I never used anything other than Linksys cards but I'm thinking of just maybe getting a different brand card if there's a better brand. My laptop does not have built-in wi-fi and only has one USB port which is used for the USB drive cards etc already so I only have that one option for connecting to the internet.I wouldn't completely give up on Linksys as the chance remains you may have just gotten a FAULTY card.
Do you have the option of returning it ? ?

Solve : No audio device found?

Answer»

It's me again. One of my friends called to INFORM me that she has no sound on her computer. Apparently, her boyfriend installed or had someone install and new HDD and a new video card. I had to help her load the drivers for her new video card in order to make it work properly. I did a quick check in device MANAGER and found her sound, video and game controllers were all TAGGED with a yellow ?. Her sound is on-board and not a separate card. What are we looking at here? New drivers. She's SUPPOSED to call me back and I'll get her to check if her Windows audio is enabled and set to automatic. It appears she NEEDS new drivers for her onboard sound.

They can be found at the computer manufacturer's website.

What's the make and model?I won't know her make & model until I get a chance to visit again. I found something called Vinyl Audio on Google. It seems to be the ultimate in drivers for audio. Does anyone know anything about this? You're better off to install the drivers that were specifically written for her motherboard. The video card should have come with a driver CD. If the board has onboard video make sure you go into CMOS and disable it first.if you dont have a driver cd loom on the manafacturers websiteDownloaded the drivers and sound is back.
ThanksGlad you got it working, SuperDave...It's tougher when other people are doing other things to the computer.

Hi, I've got a problem I've been working on for a week.
I've got a thread or string that's MISSING in the registry I think.
I can't open my internet opyions in internet explorer under TOOLS

I can get inetcpl.cpl if I go to windows and click on IE7 and scroll
down to inetcpl.cpl and right click on that. then the internet properties dialog
comes up'
If I go to system32 and click on inetcpl.cpl it is inactive,so I suppose the
path is broken there.
How would I fix that in the register?
I'm not that familiar with that.I'd need some good guidance for that.
But I want to try something.
Computer seems to be free of malware and spyware
Help would be appreciated. jacobi

I would suggest you uninstall IE7 and reboot and see if the tools WORK with IE6. After do a reinstall of IE7...long way around but the reinstall will also fix and check things during the install

I tried to uninstall IE7,but i couldn't do that no dialog for that.
I guess i need to uninstall sp3 first. Then uninstall IE 7
I suppose sp2 will be working when I uninstall sp3
If you have an easier way let me know.
Thanks again

Solve : recording from computer wont work?

Answer»

i am trying to RECORD a piece of music i composed using Guitar Pro, a music program that allows you to create a tableture and play what you make using a real sound engine.
normally it would have the clearest quality being recorded, but for some reason, it now mostly records white noise. if i listen hard ENOUGH i can hear what i wanted to record.

ok this is what i have done to try and solve this, i turned off the MICROPHONE volume in the Volume controls, and put on Mic Boost and BASS Boost options in the microphone advanced. the thing i want to record is a little clearer, but there still is a lot of white noise.

any suggestions?I'm a bit confused here. You're trying to record something you created in Guitar Pro. What are you using to record that piece?either SOUNDMAX Digital Audio, or the Primary Sound Capture Device.

Guitar Pro has an Export tab. you can export what you make to a .WAVE file. but you need one of the two above to record it.

Also if I were to install some of these files do they alter any other important file eg. kernels?

Not unless you are prepared to format/reinstall your OS. I have a pc running various OS's and dedicated to "risky" operations, what you are looking at I would consider to be at the top end of risky.

Good luckOk thanks guys..
I wont touch it with a 50ft pole then..
Thanks for the heads up on that..

Again, thanks.. You probably saved my Pc..I didn't reformat windows, I just uninstalled the software and did a repair install.

One more point I should mention is that the computer greatly slows down (most of the TIME)Ok cool.

Solve : Duplicate Setup?

Answer»

Hello to everyone. My name is Dennis and I just registered. I have a problem that is annoying but not critical. Around a month ago I had a major slowdown problem with my computer so I figured I would reinstall WindowsXP and when I did I had an installation problem and ended up having to try it again. Now when I start my computer it seems to give me 2 choices of which operating system to start with. Both are Windows XP Pro but one works and one doesn't. It says a required dll file is missing. Is there any WAY to delete the nonworking setup so it doesn't show up as a choice during boot-up? Thanks in advance for your help!
Dennis Quote from: kixfan on May 29, 2008, 03:03:41 PM

Is there any way to delete the nonworking setup so it doesn't show up as a choice during boot-up?

Yes, deleting an additional operating system as a choice during bootup is easy. You delete the invocation line of the nonworking operating system from the boot.ini file.

The real issue is whether you actually have multiple INSTALLATIONS of the operating system on your system, or multiple "invocations" of the same operating system.

The key to a solution is to examine the "boot.ini" file located at "C:\boot.ini". Normally, the following file attributes are SET for this file making it difficult to examine manually: system, hidden, and read-only.

The contents of this file identify the operating system(s) known to your system and where they are located within the file system.

If each operating system invocation line points to a different location for the operating system; either different disk, partition, "Windows" directory name, or all of the preceding; then you have two distinct installations. This sounds like the case you have here, since one works and one doesn't. If true, you may eventually want to delete the directory subtree of the nonworking operating system from the file system to recover the disk space. Don't rush into this. Think about it long and hard. (And back up your important data first).

If each operating system invocation line points to the same location; e.g same disk, partition, and Windows directory name; then there is only one installation of Windows with different options for invoking it.

At any rate, here are some references to look over:

1. Two Installations. Your system believes there are two installations of Windows XP on your computer. It believes the first is in partition 1 (at "C:\Windows"?) and the second is in partition 2 (at "D:\Windows"?). Whether they actually exist or not only you can say.

2. Which One is Which. If you let the 30 second timeout expire, the system will attempt to boot the "default" operating system in partition 1 at c:\Windows. This corresponds to the first entry listed under "[operating systems]" because they both refer to "partition(1)".

You are free to edit the identifying text string(s) to any value you wish. For example you may change "Microsoft Windows XP Professional" to "Do you feel lucky?", "Go ahead - make my day!", or "Windows XP Pro - C:\Windows" and "Windows XP Pro - D:\Windows".

3. Could it be because... I don't know why you are unable to find a second operating system on your system. Maybe it's just not there.Thank you for your help. You're more than welcome. Posting the "boot.ini" file was very helpful. --dahlarbear

The machine support sata disks as it has sata connectors and sata power supply, But after installing, the windows XP does not start and system gives blue screen and instructs to remove any hardware installed. Help me please.HI

It sounds like some of the system files may be corrupted. Please follow the procedures outlined below to let XP restore all system files.
Start the Operating System from the CD-ROM
When the computer starts from the CD, the system checks your hardware and then prompts you to select one of the FOLLOWING OPTIONS:
To set up Windows XP now, press ENTER.
To repair a Windows XP installation using RECOVERY Console, press R.
To quit SETUP without installing Windows XP, press F3.
Press ENTER.
Press F8 to accept the Licensing Agreement.
A box lists your current Windows XP installation, and then the system prompts you to select one of the following options:
To repair the selected Windows XP installation, press R.
To continue installing a fresh copy of Windows XP without repairing, press ESC.
Press R to start the automatic repair process.
Note: After repairing Windows XP, you may need re-download all updates.

Solve : Cannot boot Window XP?

Answer»

Some background first. My computer is about 2 1/2 years old and I don't know the exact specs, it is PLENTY powerful. My son turned the power off INSTEAD of shutting it down the correct way. He told me he has done this many times with no issues.
Now I don't know if this the cause of the problem or not but I cannot get Windows XP to load.

When the computer starts to boot, the first page loads quickly so it is difficult to see all the info. The next page comes up and has this info on it: REALTEK RTL8139 (X) /8130/810 X BOOT AGENT Press shift F10 to configure
Then the Windows XP logo comes up or tries to load, goes blank and the whole process starts all over again in a continuous cycle.
Now I have tried pressing F8 and got to that screen. There are error messages listed and I have tried every option from SAFE mode to last known good configuration. It will always end going BACK to same process I just stated.
If anyone has any ideas, please let me know. Thank You
if you have win xp cd available, you can try using the repair. It has helped other people in similar situations but for more detailed help, ask a malware SPECIALIST like broni or patio or evilfantasy and they will get the the more detailed specs of getting your problem solved. When you see REALTEK RTL8139 (X) /8130/810 X BOOT AGENT screen, press Shift+F10 to enter BIOS.
Make sure, that the boot order reads: floppy, CD, HD
Disable Boot from Network (wording is different on every machine, may say Integrated NIC, Network, PXE-xxxxxxx), if it's enabled.
Save changes on exit.

Make sure, your son doesn't press power button to turn computer off. Sooner, or later it'll cause damages.

Solve : used laptop with no OS?

Answer»

Hi all I have an used Dell latitude my wife bought from work and they wiped the drive CLEAN before selling. My ? is I have an xp upgrade packet (NEW) how can I load this without having 98 2000 or me or do I need to buy a complete xp pack? Someone had told me to find an 98 2000 or me disk and load that first but I am not into hacked programs too much trouble!!Have you tried contacting Dell for recovery software for this laptop?

The recovery software will install the OS and all software installed on that laptop as it was shipped from the factory.

The recovery software is relatively inexpensive...legal...and you can use your XP upgrade CD, if the laptop can handle it.The other option is to locate or use a Win98SE or Win2K CD .
They do not have to be installed ...at some point it will ask for an upgrade path and you simply insert the older OS CD and it will continue the install.
These need to be legit CD's with a reg. # however for this to work properly.

You will need to spend some time at Dell's SITE and collect that machines drivers prior to this to insure a hassle FREE install....just travel to Dell's site and enter the service tag # from the laptop and it should list all the neccessary drivers...

Does this machine have enough horsepower for XP ? ?An XP upgrade disk looks for a qualifying product. Windows 98 is such a product. However, it doesn't look for a complete Windows 98 installation. Old hands know that it looks for one file: c:\windows\win.com. If it doesn't find that, it asks you to insert a Windows 98/ME disk to prove that you own a qualifying product. You don't actually have to install the whole qualifying OS.

Of course it would only be legal for you to install Windows 98 DOS 7 onto a hard drive and put win.com in c:\windows IF you actually owned the qualifying product, so don't break the law, folks! (If you live in the States I mean. Microsoft EULAs are not legal in many COUNTRIES.)Quote from: Dias de verano on May 31, 2008, 08:59:59 AM

Old hands know that it looks for one file: c:\windows\win.com.

Dias, Thanks for the reminder. I was trying to remember the name of the file as I was reading through the thread. win.com was it!

Anyway, as I remember, it may not be necessary to get the original win.com file. I think you can simply rename any old file to win.com and it will pass the test. (It doesn't even have to be in a folder named windows either). Just put it on a floppy, CD, or usb drive that is available when needed.

Of course, you should use this trick only if you already own a copy of Win98. Quote from: llmeyer1000 on June 01, 2008, 01:17:43 PM

Of course!
Have you ever considered running a linux distro on this machine? They are free and if you dont want to buy a windows CD then you could have a free O.S. on the machine untill you decide to install windows.

Solve : Windows Media Player 11 on XP Help Needed?

Answer»

Sorry if this is not the PLACE to post this, I'm not sure where...so please excuse if wrong area...
Whenever I try to watch a video CLIP on Windows Media PLAYER 11 in XP, it will play for a moment, then my monitor flashes on and off (I can still see other window open behind the flashing), in a few seconds, it freezes up and I must reboot. Dell has replaced my motherboard, video card and more. This same problem also OCCURS when I try to use google earth. I can play video clips with real player, no problem and quicktime, no problem. Dell also suggested reloading Windows, did that, no luck. Any help would make me so happy! DeniseWindows Media player 11 generally flashes your screen on and off when you run it for the first time (I don't know whty...). Anyway, not so sure about the Media Player problem, but try CHANGING Google Earth to OpenGL mode as opposed to DirectX mode (or vice versa).

Solve : Looking for Disc and install files?

I run a second user on XP and when I try to use any of my office files, they ask me for the DISC's to load. when I click cancel, they go away and it loads, without my file. I them have to choose to open that file again. how can I STOP this from happenning? Exact message, Office VERSION, please.2000 on everything except outlook which is 03I thought, Outlook is part of Office, so how come, you have Office 2000, and Outlook 2003.
Then, once again:
Quote

Exact message
well....to use my phone and sync, it has to use outlook 2003, which was included with the active sync disc. On my main profile, there are no issues trying to open the programs. only on the identity that i use to keep my stuff separate from the wife and kids messes.
outlook is part of windows but i think you can install specific programs from the office cd so that you only get the programs you ACTUALLY wanted.

So you can have word 2000, excel 2002 and powerpoint 2003 all on the computer theoretically. Outlook is NOT part of Windows.Quote from: Broni on May 30, 2008, 07:00:49 PM
Outlook is NOT part of Windows.

sorry, it's not part of windows but rather, the office installations and therefore, like I said, one can have programs from office 200, 2002, 2003 existing on same machine. Still need to know the exact error message....

Either uninstall the programs, password your entire system, or download some sort of software that locks executables.

Or... if you could be more specific as to what it is you're doing, we might be able to help you BETTER. What programs? Who exactly are you trying to keep off? If it's someone who uses the computer regularly, you could create their own user account. There are lots of way to do what you want to do, but it all depends on what exactly you're trying to accomplish.

my computer booted normally, 5mins after i logged on to my desktop my computer stopped and went black on the screen.. so i restarted the computer, after windows xp LOADS, it was all pixelized, its like there was no video card installed, the image was like you were playing nintendo's family computer.. i did nothing yet, and after a while it worked normally again.. and then it happened again, this time when i turn on my computer nothing shows up, just all black.. still i did nothing.. and now, its ok again.. what happened to my computer? is it my video card? or a serious ERROR?? please help.. thanks! It could be the vid card going South...
REMOVE a side PANEL and remove the card carefully and re-seat it making sure to replace the hold down screw at the top of the card as this is your Ground.
While the cover is off power back up and make sure all fans are operating properly.
SEE if this helps.
If not you could try re-installing the vid card drivers and if it is still like this it looks like you need a new card...Also try updating the driver, also did u install any new programs lately? If u did try uninstall and see what happens.

Solve : AVG 8.0 Free?

You're welcome
You can DISABLE it, but as I posted earlier: "disabling it in browser will CAUSE displaying EXCLAMATION mark on AVG systray icon".If this is where the exclamation mark is MEANT to be it didn't happen even after a reboot.

Cheers again..

[recovering space - attachment deleted by admin]Hmm...all good, then mines showing as an explanation mark because i disabled the link scanner. the toolbar you were talking about is not the link scanner, it is simply a search toolbar. they ask you if you want to install it during the AVG 8.0 installation, i politely declined. the link scanner, on the other hand, scans links provided by search engines. here are two pics i took, one with the link scanner enabled and one without. in the photo with the link scanner enabled, the AVG dialog BOX (as shown) will appear if you hover the mouse over the AVG link scanner icon.

Solve : how to get adobe reader to fill the monitor screen?

Answer»

I was looking at a wiring diagram using adobe reader. I'd like the diagram to fill the MONITER screen, is that possible? I can make the diagram do anything except fill the monitor screen from top to bottom. thanksLooking at Adobe Reader 7 here. You should SEE a - and + symbol on your Reader toolbar. Between those signs, you should see a box with a percent value displayed in it. You can resize your image either by using the - and + signs, or by clicking the arrow on the right side of the aforementioned box and selecting a size. Note that one of the choices in that drop-down LIST is "Fit Page". Give it a try.I use Adobe Reader 8...

On the toolbar, select Window and then Full Screen Mode. To exit full-screen, hit the Esc key on your keyboard.Oh, Full Screen Mode; I missed the point in my previous post. Reader 7 also has that feature. It's on both the VIEW menu and the Window menu. The shortcut key is Ctrl + L. To exit, hit Esc.Thanks for the shortcut tip, soybean...Thanks soybean and Saviour, I got it.

I haven't surfed all the computor sites on the web, but, I can't believe there's any better than this one. I've had computer problems recently, before the harddrive completely shut down, I did a search on this site, more tech info than I can read in a day, a LOT of information.

After I replaced the harddrive, everything worked, but the monitor was flickering, didn't do that before. I found the link on this site for troubleshooting the monitor, it talked about the refresh rate. I just followed the directions, fixed it. Tell everybody, great site and thanks. You're welcome, jdl...

...and I also agree...this is one great site!
