Solve : Deletion of a surplus Windows.?

Answer»

First. I live in Spain and have an XP installation in English thus help is NOT easy.
I purchased a new computer in December FOLLOWING local advice. I had been having significant instability with Windows -the local engineer TRANSFERRED -after a scan showing a VIRUS -all my data and software to an external HDD. I then purchased a new computer SOLELY because my old one was out of date in some ways.
I successfully installed a new Windows from a newly purchased XP [SP3} CD.
I now have a fully operational computer -faster-stable and satisfactory -BUT BUT BUT-I have alarge external HDD containing an 'old' Windows plus IE8 etc etc.together with my personal data .
I would like-if possible- to keep everything on the External HDD EXCEPT the old Windows.
Is this possible ? How can I DELETE ONLY Windows [which has an old -no longer available key]Quote

I would like-if possible- to keep everything on the External HDD EXCEPT the old Windows.

Delete the Windows folder. Keep the rest.

Yes, boot to the new windows installation and delete the old windows folder - it's that simple. And don't worry, windows will not let you delete the installation to which you have booted.

Solve : window xp cannot boot?

Answer»

I am using Window XP (Starter Pack 2). Recently, I cannot boot my laptop and it always displays "ERROR loading system"Has anything on the computer been changed recently......software/hardware?

After turning on the computer, how soon/at what point, do you get the error?

Power on the computer and tap F8 immediately until you get to the Advanced Boot Options menu (if it will let you)... Highlight Safe Mode and press enter... Does it boot up?You said this just started recently - what is different since the last time the system started normally (NEW hw, SW, error, virus, etc)?QUOTE from: kcchua on January 15, 2010, 01:48:01 AM

Can you boot into Safe Mode?

Solve : side by side errors other errors?

Answer»

The DESCRIPTION for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: 7.

Resolve Partial Assembly failed for Microsoft.VC80.MFC. Reference error message: The referenced assembly is not installed on your system.
PX SP3 amd athlon soyo dragon mb system crashes and reboots with these errors mostly when I play rome total warWhat are we talking about here?Probably "curious George" digging through event viewer??I just happen to recognize the system since I also have a Soyo Dragon motherboard with an Athlon XP CPU. OBVIOUSLY a typo with the Windows XP SP3.

So I presume what has been TYPED is a copy of an on-screen error message.

Solve : Laptop officially hates discs.?

Answer»

My mom has an affinity to spawn ridiculous problems with computers, and now I have one to share with you, that I really would appreciate a solution to.

Inspiron-1520, can't remember cd drive and stuff but the thing is the cd drive comes up as gone, i've tried to replace it and it won't work, I've tried replacing the actual drive and that won't work, i've tried to use an external usb drive and that won't work although the usb devices work fine, and i've even tried mountind cd images with DT and Virtual clone drive

when i try to mount the images with dt i cannot assign a drive letter, and it won't appear in my pc

when i try to mount the images in virtual clone drive i can't even succesfully create a virtual drive, they won't show up in my computer

this is getting ridiculous, please help Welcome to CH.
Did you read over the topic that says read this first?

Reading your post over twice it is rather hard to understand what the exact problem is. For one, it is not clear if you're talking about a laptop or desktop computer.
From what you describe it would seem that the cable to the drives has come loose and you did not reset it properly.
Please provide more information and help US to understand if you're talking about one problem or two problems. Are you talking about something that happened all at once? Or are you talking about events that occurred over a period of time and now you want to put everything into one topic?
it is a laptop

the drive is connected

it all occurred at once, it's just that after no fix could be found I tried to loop around the problem with external/virtual drives with no results.

No one seems to know what the problem is If you have a home network and another computer, you can GET files off the other computer with file sharing. This is the easy workaround.

But that will not work for many games that require a physical CD-ROM.

Your motherboard may have had some damage.

But first, you need to get into the BIOS and see if the settings are correct. It is possible that the CMOS GOT messed up. There is a place where you turn off the CD-ROM drive, Check that out.

For some reason I think that I have already checked the bios out, but I can always check again.

And your file sharing solution won't work, because like I said, it seems that the computer COMPLETELY refuses to read cd images, even the files.

I believe that last time I checked the BIOS, cd-rom either wasn't even there, or was lookin fine, I can't remember, but I will get back to you on this asap.Quote from: hack17up on January 30, 2010, 11:47:20 PM

That would be the best place to start. Does the CD drive show up in BIOS?Most laptop optical drives have a small release button on the side that physically ejects the drive from the machine...
Press this and remove the drive and re-seat it.
Do this with the power off and the battery removed.Quote from: patio on January 31, 2010, 06:19:03 AM

I'm pretty sure you can do it also with the power on (Safely remove hardware recognizes my disk drive [a DELL Inspiron also]) but I strongly suggest doing it while the power is off, as there is less chance of anything going wrong. See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060.

Solve : The only mmsg. I get is to reinstall a windows file, but how can I do that...?

Answer»

from a dos prompt and where do I get that file? My HP pavillion laptop crashed during a "restore to factory condition" attempt and now windows xp home edition won't load. Of course, I didn't burn the recovery disks when I got the computer, so I tried (my own repairs)another xp home cd that I had, but when I try to either repair or install, it says that there is no hard drive. I used a compaq recovery cd to get to the dos prompt and dos said that there is a hard drive and it is also there in setup. Anyway, just turning on the laptop, I can go to setup or I get the mssg. that "windows32/ hal.dll" (something like that) file is missing or corrupt and it needs to be reinstalled. Where do I get that file and how do you install it when windows can't load. Is there any way I can get to the d:recovery drive and restore from there?
You probably need the sata driver for the hdVery early on in the Repair and/or install process of XP at the bottom of the blue screen will be a massage stating "press F6 to install ADDITIONAL drivers"...
At this point hit F6...then insert your HP Driver CD and hit ENTER...it will locate the SATA drivers and re-install them and continue...
At some point it will ask you to put the XP CD back in.

PS if the other CD is a MS XP CD stick with that one...some OEM CD's i.e. HP Compaq will NOT do a proper Repair Install...I can't get to the repair because it goes directly to telling me that there is no hard drive. You need to change the bios so the cd drive is at the top of the boot order, then reboot to the cd.Not making sense...you stated the dos mode says it's recognised.
Follow This Guide suggest reading thru it and printing out a reference copy before proceeding...

Since you used both an HP and Compaq CD you may be past the point of no return.okay, I already changes the boot order and that's when I end up with the hard drive being gone and it won't continue. If I don't use the cd, I can access SET up and can see the hard drive. Then I get the missing file mssg. I got to the dos prompt using the compaq recovery cd, where I can also see the c:windows drive and the d:recovery partition. After looking at the suggested article, I think maybe getting back to the orininal os isn't an option, so my question now is if I can get the dos prompt again, can I just format the hard drive and install a new xp os? I'm not looking to recover any old files, I just want my computer to work again.
Thank you.Your making this more complicated than it is...
Boot to the XP CD...remove the existing partition and follow the PROMPTS to re-install XP...I can't boot to the xp disk. I get to the install or repair screen and either choice takes me to the screen that says that it doesn't DETECT the hard disk and to make sure it's plugged in, etc. Other than that, booting from the hard drive takes me to the missing or corrupt file screen. I tried the boot logging thing, but it doesn't even appear to load so much as a couple of files (if that) and I'm stuck on the missing file (please replace) screen. I have usually been able to fix my computers sooner or later, but I just can't figure out what to do with this. Thanks for your help.

Solve : File managing.?

Answer»

I have Windows XP SP2.
Is it possible to create a file with a limited size.
I also want that the file is automatically cleaned after 24hour.
I would like to do that with build in windows options.(Without any other program that I need to install.)
Is this possible?

Thanks in advance

Jonas
(I've moved the topic to DOS. Tomorrow(2-5-'07) I 'll remove THISONE)It LOOKS like its really impossible.
Should I remove the topic? Why not just have a batch file copy a file of the size of your choosing and delete it after x many seconds?

What you hope to achieve is BEYOND my imagination, though.. YES but a batch file need to run whole the time and you ll notice that.
then my batch file would be:(I would have to save it into Programs/startup)

@echo off
cls
:Begin
If exist E:/printer/temp
del /s /q E:/printer/temp
MD E:/printer/temp
WAIT -t 3600
GOTO Begin

Is this a good batch file? (accept that I don't know how you can set a delay time.)
I just learned how to create a batch file sow my apologies if its very bad.

I want to use E:/printer/temp as a temporary file were we can paste documents that we have to print on the main COMPUTER.
The printer sharing doesn't work but file sharing does.

Sow that's my explanation for my request.Ehm, I don't think I should be helping you as I can see where this is going. I don't understand what do you mean white: Quote

where this is going.
Shouldn't I stop asking what's the good code?
Or is it something else?Oh I think I know: Is because I sad you'll notice that.
Sow now you think I'm not allowed to do it.
That's not true at all.
Its just annoying that you have a running windows whole the time.
By the way I'm not good enough to hack or crack a computer not that I want that to be.
Sorry for the misunderstanding. You may not intend on using the information for malicious purposes, but people who read the board may want to. That's why we avoid discussing certain things. It is a public forum after all.

Solve : Urgh, does anyone know how....?

Answer»

I installed some program onto my computer, shouldn't matter what one.
But this program took over all my control + 'key' shortcut commands.
For example, I can not press control+t anymore to open a new tab in IE.
I tried to unistall the program to SEE if settings WOULD go back to normal, but no luck.

Anyone know how I can set this back to normal?

Thanks! You installed a program and now ctrl+ functions do not work in any other program? I can't see why any legitimate program would have a REASON for doing that so it must have installed some kind of virus on your SYSTEM.Try running an Anti-Virus program, and see what happens. Also, try to delete everything associated with the file (it may have left files behind).

BTW, what program was this?Quote from: Seppuku on May 01, 2007, 02:29:04 AM

I'm guessing this isn't a legitimate/legal program.
What program did you INSTALL? It definitely matters.
What OS are you on?
If XP...have you tried doing a System Restore to a time before you installed the program?

Solve : Invalid Sytem Disk, and much more?

Answer»

Okay heres my long and complicated problem. Thanks for even reading this

Okay my old PC is pretty old, Ive had it since I was like 13, im 19 now, poor thing is probably ready for the grave, but I want to see if I can save it one more time. And Im not great with computers, i just know a LITTLE bit here and there, but i catch on fast, most of the time. Now I cant remeber what excatly i did to it cause I GOT mad and shoved it in my closet 6 mtnhs and just now decide to see if I can do anything to it. Um I also cant find my windows 98 cd, but i can borrow one from friend, but i have no boot floppy disk for windows 98 anymore and my friend refuses to make me one, she swears it wont work on mine( anything has to work better than nodda). Now it wasnt working all that well before I tried to fix it, but it was working, working without any sound and barely any color, Im guessing the sound card is dead ect, but it served its purpose, it had msn.

Now I had got tired of it being slow, and had too much junk on it so I wiped it completely clean, reformated it and all, then reinstalled windows 98, it was working okay. Then I got this silly and oh so stupid idea to install windows 2000 on it, borrowed the cd from my neighbour and installed it. BAD, bad idea. First it wouldnt even turn on, then it wouldnt go any further then the windows 2000 screen, where it loads. So without knowing how I tried to install windows98 back in. I just messed it up more. Now all it does it turn on and you can press DEL to go to a few settings, but after that it just says over and over again no matter what you press " Invalid system disk, replace the disk, and then press any key" I put my burned windows 2000 copy in and it says the same. And you cant get the DOS commands to work, you cant even type anything at all.

Is it beyond hope? Should I just drop it off at the shop and have them try to fix it? Or just use it for pieces? Thanks to anyone who offers any help, its greatly apperciated. Boot DISKS can be downloaded for free at www.bootdisk.com

We don't help with "borrowed" software on this forum, so you might want to try google for specific information. Well at least I know where to get the boot disks now, thank you very much I'm not sure why Windows 2000 didn't work, but my guess is that you didn't install it properly. And chances are high that your system was only designed for Windows 98SE and below so reinstall that.

As for your soundcard/videocard being 'dead'; No. You need to obtain drivers from the manufacturers webpage before they'll work.

When it asks you what parition you want to install in you should have an option to format the available partitions.
Do so.

First of all, someone ban this twat.

Second of all, the installation was a failure as there are now two entries in the boot.ini which never should have happened on a CLEAN install. Ban for what?
Does He say something about clean install?
The new entry could be result of installing the new Windows into the old ones directory!
Open boot.ini in msconfig and look at the destinations of entry, if they are the same just delete it but if they are different? Then delete the old one AND its directory.

Solve : Won't fully start?

Answer»

Please help. My compaq computer (XP Home) will not fully boot up. When I turn it on, it will get to the Windows XP start up page, but before going any further the computer restarts. If left alone, this cycle will repeat over and over.

I have not had any success starting in safe mode.

Two recent changes to the computer - Installing McAfee Internet Security Suite, a number of updates downloaded (finally got highspeed internet at home.)Did the problem begin before or after you install McAfee & the updates / backed up all your stuff / got a shiny windows CD / tried Last Known Good Configuration?

Alan <>< Well, McAfee is likely your problem. I hav seen lot of computers having problems after installing McAfee. It should renamed to McAfraid, be very very afraid...
And good luck UNINSTALLING it completely, do a google on "how to uninstall McAfee first."

Also what other things did you installed?

B.After installing McAffee. After updates. Stuff not backed up (yes I'm an idiot). No shiny new cd. Tried last known good configuragion. Didn't work.I am not SURE what updates were installed.

Is there a way to uninstall McAfee if I can't even get the thing fully started? If, at this point you can't even get into SM or LKGC, is to run a restore from the second partition.

"DANGER WILL ROBINSON, DANGER".
This process may or may not wipe the drive clean of EVERYTHING. If you can't afford to lose your stuff you may have to take the computer to a friend (you have friends, right ) pull the drive & hook it up to their system to pull you data off, then reinstall the OS from the other partition.

If no friends (bummer ) then take it to a shop.

Alan <>< Thank you for your time.

Very helpful

Hmmm, hate to say this, but it doesn't sound like there's much hope besides a full re-installation. Before you do that though, do what Alan said, get the data off.

Just for future reference, be CAREFUL with what you download and install, I would urge you to stay away from any McAfee and Norton antivirus products. Also stay away form some RANDOM so called antivirus program show up on you web page, they are untrustworthy, some of them MIGHT even be a virus itself!

I highly recommand AVG, it's free, not subscription require, frequent update... what more can you ask for? Use adaware and spybot to clean up your comp once or twice a week. (Both are free as well). Regclean is another nice piece freeware, use it to clean up the registry once so often. But use Regclean with CARE!, read the instructions first, because it not used properly, it will make some of your programs unusable.

Hope this help.

Solve : Xp reinstall problems!!?

Answer»

I don't know why but for some reason when I try to reinstall windows by setting the cd drive as the 1st boot instead of floppy, where it gets to the point where it SAYS windows install will start after RESTART. But when it restarts nothing happens no install no nothing... I've gotten to the point where I have tried like 20 times and more, but still same results. HELP!Try cleaning the CD with a soft lint-free cloth...

This is a genuine XP CD correct ? ?

What were the troubles that led you to a re-install anyway ? ?My guess is something is messed up with your boot order. If its able to read the CD to get through the initial stages of setup but then when it restarts its unable to find the Disc with all the information on it, its not looking in the right place.

How many drives do you have in your computer and which one are you installing XP on? Its possible your computer is looking towards the wrong drive in your boot order.Have you tried your BIOS default settings? If it is getting all the way to the restart phase of the installation there is nothing wrong with the boot order.hmm so wat should i try doing now? Aren't you pressing ''any key'' every time is says ''Press any key to boot from CD'' ?
If you do, then don't. It is needed only once. hmm I dont know it!! after it says windows will install after reboot it never happens! It just reboots the computer and no install. If I got to the menu and do it again the same thing will happen!Quote from: Steven5210 on May 01, 2007, 02:40:35 PM

It appears to me that you are not using Full OEM XP Disk, are you using a recovery disk that came with the computer as these do not have a boot up sector on them. You can use any XP but use the key number that's on your computer when you get to that part of the installation. Some Any information about the hardware, age, etc. could be helpful. Its one of those dell cds that came with the computer. Its says window reinstall on it. I wish I could get you some more info but it's my cousins computer which is all the way in CALI. And now the computer is telling me i have low disk space i have a local hard disk dirve that's 188gigs and a secondary hard dirve with 12gigs.i must of installed it on the secondary hard drive. Is there a way i can keep the windows xp media edition and get everything back. If not how can i remove the windows xp media edition and go back to the window home edition. thanks if anybody can help!!
You installed Media Edition over Home......you installed another OS over another OS......
Unless you backed everything up, I think you've lost everything. I'm not 100% sure so wait for someone else to reply If you installed the other OS on a separate partition, its possible your other installation was not effected.

When you popped in the disc, did you tell it you were upgrading your old version of windows or installing a fresh copy?

One way to tell if you have 2 Operating Systems going on is Right click on "My Computer", go to the "Advanced" Tab, then near the bottom click on "Settings" for the section "Startup and Recovery".

Once in there, up at the top there should be a little drop down window that has your "Default Operating System" listed. Click on it and see if it shows more than one Operating System. If it only shows one, then your prob screwed when it comes to your old programs. If it shows your old installation, you should be able to set it as the default and then get back into it.ok i did everything you said CARBON and what i come to realizeis that i installed the windows media edition on my(H:)dirve FAT32 with a total of 6.50GB and 12.0KB of free space i can get into the (C:)drive NTFS how can i like when i boot my computer it load the (C:) drive and not the (H:)diveopps i ment to say i did everything rainman2974 saidQuote from: junenex on MAY 01, 2007, 07:25:40 AM

Right, you scared me....

So you want to boot with drive C instead of H...right?You probably overwrote your XP RESTORE ability, so that is long gone. yes i what to boot the (C:)drive instead of the (H:)drive.also when i click START and go into My Computer i can go into the (C:) Drive and get most of my software, music, pic and drag an drop it on the (H:) desk top but i can't get the data just the shortcut icon because theres low disk dive space on the (H:)drive This HDD needs to be hooked up to another machine as a slave and have the data saved...

It then needs to have all partitions FDisked and formatted to how you want them...

Then it needs a clean install of whichever OS you want to run.

Solve : XP Frequent Restart Problem?

Answer»

A friend of mine has an older HP computer that has been having issues with frequent restarting. It is a Pavilion a220n model and its original specs are relatively unchanged EXCEPT for a RAM upgrade I gave it. This is apparently a problem thats been happening for a while, everything I have attempted to do up until now has had no effect on the computer restarting randomly.

When I got my hands on the computer, it had not had much in the way of maintenance for the life of the computer, 3+ years. Needless to say, the XP installation needed some TLC, it was very slow and bogged down with programs upon programs, and it only had 2 256 RAM sticks so that wasn't the best either. I reformatted the computer with XP Corporate SP2, and threw in a compatible 512 RAM stick to give it 768, (minus the 64 the shared on board video card takes up).

I was hoping it was just a software issue and that would solve the problem but that did not, it continued the random restarting. Looking into it more, I thought it could be a RAM issue, so I downloaded a utility to check the RAM and it found no issues. I even tried swapping out the 256 RAM sticks, thinking maybe one of them was bad, did not help.

Next thing I noticed was the computer ran really quiet, so I downloaded a Fan and Temp managing program and for whatever reason the default speeds on the fans are only at 44% capacity. I showed her how to crank these up to max when she starts up the computer, thinking the issue could be an overheating thing. This has apparently not had any effect either.

Up until this point, I've not actually had the computer at my place, only tried to FIX it at hers. I'm hoping soon she'll let me have it for a few days so i can take a look at the windows dump log files and see if there is any incite there. I think I've ruled out a software issue, seeing as how I've done a total reformat of the harddrive and reinstallation of Windows, so I'm left with some kind of hardware issue.

Can anyone think of something else I can look into when I get my hands on the computer again?I managed to get a hold of the computer, and this is the last entry put into the event viewer before a crash. Not sure if its very useful at all, but here it is:

Windows saved user KRISTY\hp registry while an application or service was still using the registry during log off. The memory used by the user's registry has not been freed. The registry will be unloaded when it is no longer in use.

This is often caused by services running as a user account, try configuring the services to run in either the LocalService or NetworkService account.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.Found this also in the Event viewer in the system section, seemingly right around the time it crashed.

The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x1000000a (0x00000004, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0x804e6617). A dump was saved in: C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini042907-01.dmp.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.If you start taking the time to go through XP "dump logs" I think you've got enough time to reformat & reinstall which will definitely solve the problem if it's software related. Sounds like her User Profile has been corrupted. Delete it and re-create it and see if this helps...Reformatting again certainly is an option but it didn't seem to effect it much the last time I did it so I'm not sure if it will help again.

I'll try the user profile route next time.

Would a faulty power supply cause random restarts? I could try swapping that out but its kinda a pain in the *censored* to get to her powersupply in her case.oh yes plz make sure your psu is not bad and that is has enough power to run verythingThinking it might be a power supply issue, I disconnected anything that wasn't needed, so I took out an old modem she wasn't using and disconnected the floppy drive. The only things running off the board is 1 harddrive, 2 optical DRIVES and the 2 fans.

I told her to monitor it for a few days and try to note what time it was when it crashes so i can check the log files. She's tempted to just buy a new computer which would obviously slove her issue but it isn't necessary. Quote from: rainman2974 on April 30, 2007, 11:34:43 PM

You can easily test the PC by using a program such as Winstress or Prime95 in a few hours instead of a bunch of days.

Geeh, nice and random. Just the way we like it. Cmos battery, lol. Well, who knows, could be. By the time I get done replacing everything on this stupid computer, it would probably be cheaper for her to just buy a new one. or maybe we just keep troubleshooting until we find the problemI'm willing to do so, but she isn't so patient. oh.... well whatever she wants if she wants a new computer then so be it what does she use this one for??

That's not it, trust me.

You need to obtain drivers from the manufacturer for your laptop model in your case Sony. There's no alternative unless you have a CD with Windows 98 drivers. I do have the drivers....i have the sony application recovery cd...but not sure if it has that xircom DRIVER i need....Quote from: laptophelp on May 02, 2007, 08:00:43 PM

Solve : IE problems for win98?

Answer»

thanks for the reply....I have found the driver and the ethernet card works and i can getr on line with my cable line....but now i have another problem...my internet explorer is having errors on almost every page and says it's perfoming an illegal action and it closes..what is the cause of this....is just this just an outdated and doesn't work anymore...i tried to go to the microsoft internet explorer website to download updates....but my IE has problems with scripts and syntax errors and the page rarely is able to load at all...or if it does load it barely loads, leaving out many words and images...is there a way of solving this problem other than using windows 2000....should i just toss this notebook to the graveyard?....it is from 1998...The reason i ask if there is another way than using windows is cause than when i do format the notebook with 2000 it runs kinda slow cause it's an old notebook.. please reply...thanks

I have a sony vaio 200mhz MMX Technology, 2.0 GB HD, 128 MB ram...You need to install and download Internet Explorer 6(Click)or you'll get scripting errors because IE is and has always been an unstable browser.

You're GOING to have to download it on another PC and move it to your PC by means other than your web browser.

Do it only to get the few remaining Windows 98 updates and then switch to Firefox. laptophelp, you said "the notebook with 2000 it runs kinda slow". So, you've recently reinstalled Win 98SE? Is that correct?

After a fresh installation of Win 98SE, you really should not be having such problems. Did you get online with that computer without firewall protection after your last install of Win 98SE? Doing so can lead to problems quickly, by picking up malware off the Internet.

I suggest you format and install Win 98SE again. Then, install a firewall BEFORE going online. Can you download a firewall program with another computer and burn it to a CD? I'll suggest Sygate Personal Firewall 5.6.Quote

That's not true. Windows 98SE might COME with IE <6 and that'll cause a lot of scripting errors.. See my post.

Solve : Problems with System Idle Process?

Answer»

Howdy,

My computer has been running slow alot LATELY, and most of the time the processor sound is on. I went to the Windows Task Manager, and FOUND that the System IDLE Process is taking up most of my CPU Space, I see from other posts and articles that say it is normal, but doesn't System Idle Process running at high levels make my processor have a shorter life/ or could overheat? Is there a way to unistall the System Idle Process or disable it?Also, I have Windows XP Home, 2.7 Ghz Celeron Processor with 128MB DDR PC2700 Ram.Quote from: TexanJLN on May 04, 2007, 10:45:31 AM

... doesn't System Idle Process running at high levels make my processor have a shorter life/ or could overheat? Is there a way to unistall the System Idle Process or disable it?
No, it won't shorten the life... and, no, it can't be removed or disabled. Anyway, there'd be no point in that. Look, the total of processes shown in Task Manager must add up to 100%. So, if the processes actually requiring CPU resources are basically idle, how is 100% going to be derived? By PUTTING an item in there just to make the total equal 100%. It's just a mathematical thing, nothing more.

Your main problem is that you only have 128MB RAM. Double or quadruple that and you have a much BETTER running computer. You also need to keep the system free of spyware, viruses, etc., and do periodically do some disk cleanup and defragment your hard drive, but, you really need more RAM.

Solve : BSOD then restart.....?

Answer»

I replaced my mobo. BIOS setup went ok. RUNNING WinXP Pro. It starts to load, get a flash of a BSOD, then the system restarts before I get a chance to read one word on the BSOD. Can't address the bsod if I can even read it.

So, how do I stop the computer from restarting, so that I can read the error message?

Sorry, unsure if this is a windows issue or a hardware issue.....

Thanks in advance.....Reinstall Windows. Can't work with different Mobo's. Repair Install of XP

I suggest printing this out; reading it TWICE before proceeding and if you do everything correctly your data will be intact.

After this you will need to install all your MBoard drivers and drivers for any add-on cards and devices you have.

Once finished with that you will need to go online with the Mothership and DLoad and install SP2 and any critical updates since then.

Then run all your malware scans, defrag and disk cleanup and you should be good to go...

Sounds like ALOT but this beats re-installing every thing and STARTING from scratch.

p.s. You might also have to re-register XP with the Mothership since more than one major component has changed in your system so have your info ready.

Solve : Non Genuine Windows Package?

Answer»

Without going into my sorry tale of woe at length, suffice it to say that I now find I am using a non-genuine windows package and non-genuine office package.

Have tried, unsuccessfully, to get anywhere with Microsoft so after reading various articles, etc., thought I would buy a genuine copy of Windows XP Home Basic. I am currently using WP Professional. I don't think I have to buy an office package as I understand there are 'FREE' versions of office software available.

Could a 'complete novice' install this?

I did visit a local PC shop (not the one who sold me the 'duff' copy) who asked why was I bothering? He could, for a price, get rid of the WGA messages, disable my automatic updates, get me back to Windows Media 10, etc. etc.

Any helpful advice would be appreciated.Yes, you can do it !!!!

I (had purchased) a FULL Version of windows ME in like 2001..... paid like 200.00 at best buy I think.

using the "OLD" full version, I was able to only purchase the "upgrade" windows xp disk (thus saving like 150+ bucks)

you insert the upgrade version , then the puter will ask you to install the older full version "to read some kind of files" off the disk....

then you can go back and it will fully install xp for you from the upgrade disk.
just f.y..i it WORKED for me.........

do you have an older wndws 98 full disk anywhere etc.....

All you need for XP is the older version CD...there is no need to install the old version...just insert the old version CD when prompted.

You might have to enter the reg code but an install is not neccessary. You will have to format the drive as this is a totally different version of Windows, which will require reinstalling the programs. Back up your data first.

Solve : Continuesaly atomaticly Restarting System what is that Problem??

Answer»

I am using XP SP2 OS, when i am shouting up that system automatically restarting the system.
I trying to Reinstall XP OS that time that is fully formating and when ask the Agreement and partition after that CONTINUOUSLY automatically Restarting i con not get installation Windows.
I Tried to changed the SMPS also, with new SMPS also same problem.
I Tried to change the HDD, that HDD i changed to another system there that is taking OS (fully formating and installing also)
then i that same Bootable HDD reinstall in same system that OS is not booting i mean same problem restarting..

so please tell me any solution what can i do for i work in that system?1. Windows XP SP2 should be built on the hardware (target system) it is to run on. Attempts to MOVE the hard disk drive to another system to boot are generally not successful.

2. Has the Windows XP SP2 installation CD ever been successfully used on this computer? Is it a legitimate Microsoft Windows XP SP2 Retail CD? OEM CD? Something ELSE?

3. Tap F8 key about once per second or faster as you power up the system. Windows Advanced Options Menu should display.
o Select "Disable automatic restart on system failure" to force display of Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). Record and "post" the exact contents of the BSOD. Internet searches on exact text and numbers from this message may identify the problem/solution.
o Can you boot to Safe Mode?

4. What is "SMPS"?Switching-Mode Power Supply Design =SMPS

ACCORDING to Wipedia: SMPS can be classified into four types according to the input and output waveforms, as follows.

AC in, DC out: rectifier, off-line converter input stage.
DC in, DC out: voltage converter, or current converter, or DC to DC converter
AC in, AC out: frequency changer, cycloconverter
DC in, AC out: inverter

Solve : Keyboard randomly lags when playing any game.?

Answer»

There are many definitions to keyboard lags so I will specify and be more specific.
When I am playing ANY game on my computer, or things that run the CPU at 100% anything (including the mouse) has a delayed reaction, then once it does press the button it seems to HOLD it in for a period of time, such as 4 – 5 seconds.

Let me tell you, I have done everything I can. I am running out of ideas. The last thing I can think of is going on every single computer help forum I know and posting this question.
I DID have ATI TRAY Tools, A program that is an alternative to ATI’s Catalyst Control Center. I do have both of them running. I also recently (due to reading some threads) uninstalled ATI Tray Tools. Problem still persists. I have reinstalled my Keyboard drivers, mouse drivers, video drivers, and reset ATI Catalyst to factoring settings, I’ve turned off the AGP speed (just to see what would happen) and it still persists.
Now you probably are saying “AGP? How old is this computer?” The specifications of this computer are listed below:

System:
Microsoft Windows XP
Professional
Version 2002
Service Pack 3

Computer:
Intel®
Pentium® 4 CPU 2.66GHz
2.66 GHz, 1.00 GB of RAM

Video Specs:
ATI Radeon 9600
AGP 8X
256 MB
DDR
Core Clock: 324 MHz

Keyboard:
Microsoft Natural® MultiMedia Keyboard 1.0A

Mouse:
Logitech UltraX Optical USB Mouse

I can’t give you the exact specs of the motherboard but it is an IBM Think Centre. The BIOS was updated like only 6 - 7 Months ago (Basically when I first installed the system), and the last update was in like 2005 – 2006. Anyway, I am pulling hairs out on this and I really need any SUGGESTION you can throw at me and I will do it. The computer was doing fine for months. And it just started going downhill…

So to sum it up: keyboard and mouse randomly freeze in any game that uses the CPU up to 100%. I need any help I can get.

Thank you.

PS. I have attached the Hijack this log to the post. If you need it.

[recovering space - attachment deleted by admin]"Fix" this one:
- O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [LogiSPSetupNeedReboot] rundll32.exe
Other, then that the log is clean.Well, I did a system restore to the time before I upgraded to SP3...

The lag does not appear to happen anymore.

That sucks seeing as an update can cause lag I'm not sure what else I can't update on this computer.

Probablly going to leave it un upgraded for awhile and just see what happens.

I will post again if the problem hasn't gone away.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Good luck Ok well... The lag seemed to sort of go away for awhile, but I had recently done ALOT of uninstalling of programs and so they kind of reappeared, but not everything is there. I cannot unstall them again. and they cannot be fully run without causing errors. So I restored to the last day there was a restore... everything seemed to be fine.. but the lag of course came back so, I thought if worse comes to worse I'll just re-install everything on the older (10 days old) restore, and unstall them again.

However now the lag is back on the older restore... so short from completely starting over on the computer (formatting) is there anything I can do?

Hmm... Actually I'll try doing a upgrade or repair from the disc.. I will prolly have to install all the updates again but oh well...

I will post back.mmmmmmmmmm i have mouse that did this lag thing you speak of but all the time.....
i switched computers and the mouse worked fine.

now being 4 months later that computer died hardcore

my motherboard is fried and capacitors blown and bulging

it's isn't the same exact scenario but kinda alike. could try other parts like maybe ram or other components. possibly hardware failure.

could just be lag if your PC is running at 100%. but you do have a fairly good system.

run some virus scans not likely the problem but NEVER hurts to Scan your computer.1.00 GB of RAM Most all I read states that a lot of games need 2 GB Ram to run correctly. You might try disabling a lot of running processes that you don't need for games and see if that helps.Have you tried another keyboard ? ?

Solve : Re-install Windows XP?

Answer»

I have a Dell Dimension Desktop. I received a new DISK from Dell because the old one was scratched. (My old cd had service pack 1a on it; the new one has service pack 2.) After booting from cd, when I go to DELETE the partition that the old copy of XP is on, it tells me it won't delete it because setup files are needed on it. So then, I go ahead & install it on that partition. The new Xp installation still has the old stuff all on it. (My SON has already tried this several times, so I think it has 4 installations of xp on it.) It has an 80 gb hard drive, but after the install, it has only 20 available. How do I get these old xp installations off, & do a clean install? Maybe it's because of the difference in the 2 cds, but I have never had this trouble before! It also has an 8gb partition that it won't let me delete because it is Dell's. Do you think this is a recovery partition?get on another computer and download some software. burn that software to a disk and boot from that CD and re-partion that hard drive without USING dells stupid disk. that software MIGHT be hard to find but you can do it. once that drive is completely blank install a totally new system with the disk dell gave you.

He plays WOW ( World of Warcraft ) and was watching a video somewhere and he got the Winifixer virus on it. and I think he click on some things that said too remove click here and it just snowballed down from there. So when she called me it was just saying entering sleep MODE right away each time she booted it up and nothing else would happen would not bring up anything or make any noises or beeps and couldn't press F8 for safe mode just a blank screen. So she brought over here I took off the cover and sprayed it with air and restarted. It came up to the windows screen initially but stupid me shut it down because I didn't have time to dig into it just then. So when I went to start it again all I get is the fan revving and a blank screen. I look online for help and replaced the battery and the PSU but still the same just the fan revves. I grateful for any assistance that you can provide... If its toast what is the best way to transfer the data from the hard DRIVE to a new computer? I would think the hard drive data would be salvageable??...she has a lot pictures.

She does not have one but I have one that came with my computer its an XP but different brand (Great Quality is the brand name just a cheapo from Fry's Electronics ) there's 3 disc's marked CD 1 CD 2 CD 3 all say Product recovery Microsoft XP Service PACK 2That won't work. Recovery CDs work only on a computer CDs came with. We'll thats too bad looking through her paperwork it looks like they didn't provide them as it says recovery disks that you create from files stored on your computer so that sucks she didn't know better you would think that they would provide them.. So any other suggestions ... If she bought a new computer can they copy the data files / pictures from this hard drive somehow ?She should call HP/Compaq, and they should send her Recovery CDs for free. She can lie a little, and say, that computer self-creating program didn't work. It HAPPENED to me, and I got free CDs from them.Ok I'll have her do that . Thank you very much for your help !! So the recovery discs will not erase the data files or her pictures..In the meantime you could set the jumper on that drive to slave and hook it up in a working machine and copy/burn the data you don't want to lose...As patio said, because recovery CDs will get rid of everything.Ok Thanks

Re-install the Realtek Sound drivers...
Might not have to.

I have Realtek on my LAPTOP so this is based on my software.

If go to the Control Panel (classic view) and FIND a shortcut called Realtek HD Sound Effects Manager.
When you enter it, you should see ANOTHER window come up. Look for this at the bottom:

There should be an option to show the icon in the system tray.Good job CDO ...Quote from: patio on May 16, 2008, 08:20:34 PM

Solve : Right-Click = XP Freeze?

Answer»

I am running XP (professional, I believe) on a Dell computer that up to this point has had zero problems.

Now, when I right-click on a file (seems to only happen with files) and go to choose rename or delete or properties or something, my pointer sticks on Send To and won't budge.

If I wait it out, things will unfreeze after about 90 seconds and if I Ctrl-Alt-Del and try to end, that will work after about 30 seconds or so.

In the past few days I have reinstalled Windows twice (MAYBE a bad move, I don't know), went back to a restore point and installed and uninstalled (to varying ends), the following:

Ad-Aware
Spybot
AVG
Avast
Several fonts

Any idea what the problem is and why it sticks on the Send To option? I hope I gave enough information, but if I didn't please let me know. Thank you in advance for your help. How large is the fonts folder ? ?I only have the basic fonts in my font folder, but I have other fonts in another folder...probably about 100 or so (I USED to have over 5,000 and everything worked fine so it's not that). The right-click thing HAPPENS with ANY file that has a send-to option...that's where it gets stuck. The problem is with a device at one of the locations in the send to folder. This usually happens with some slow response device such as a floppy drive, but almost never for 90 seconds. It sounds to me like one of your devices is malfunctioning. Let me explain.

When you open the "Send To" on the right click menu for a file, it contains a list of locations (commonly things like Desktop, C: drive, Shared Documents, Floppy Drive, etc). This list can contain various locations depending on your configuration. As part of the display operation for the menu, windows attempts to obtain an icon for the device. The devices icon is determined by what media currently resides in the device (IE a cd may have it's own icon, as SOMETIMES may a floppy disk). When windows queries the status of the device, it is responding slowly, inapropriately, or not at all, causing windows to stop working while it waits for a response from the device.

What are the storage devices attached to your system? This includes USB storage locations and CD drives, as well as devices that you may have to access over the NETWORK.

It's a very simple question, but I see no answer...

My agp setting for my video card is disabled now because i reinstalled everything. I download the new drivers from ati and that dint do anything. i downloaded directx and that didn't do anything. so if some1 can tell me how i can download all the files in order to enable my agp i would really appreciate it. i am just going give up on my screen problem .Did you UNINSTALL current driver, first?ya i uninstalled all my drivers for my video card. i did everything. I think, your video card is busted.

Solve : Microsoft Office 2003 Free Trial removal?

Answer»

In Dec 06 I purchased a FUJITSU Siemens laptop running Windows XP with Service Pack 2 installed. The deal came with a free 90 day trial version of MICROSOFT Office 2003 already installed.
I've not used application much and don't want to pay for full version (yes, I'm cheap!). When I go into Add/Remove programs and try and remove I get the following message:
"This PATCH could not be opened. Verify that the patch PACKAGE exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer patch package."
I've not had any problems removing other unwanted programs and would prefer not to have the THING taking up space on the hard drive. Is there anything that can be done - or does it not matter?Quote from: rightcharlie on May 17, 2008, 08:41:58 AM

Solve : Music to my Cell Phone?

Answer»

I have a CELL phone that USES a small memory card. It came with an adapter to fit inside the size of one for a digital camera. I want to put music on the card then put it back into my phone. Is there a cord I can use? I tried putting the card into my digital camera and dragging music files over to the camera but that didn't WORK. Any suggestions? You need to get the right cord for your phone, a USB cord, and also the right software from your phone's manufacturer's website.

I have a cell phone that uses a small memory card. It came with an adapter to fit inside the size of one for a digital camera.

instead of using your camera to transfer the music, you could use the converter and get a memory card reader, or as in the case with my printer, it has a memory card reader.

i am assuming that the small card is a microsd and the converter changes it to sd.
correct me if i am wrongWhat's your OS?
What MODEL phone do you have?

Not all phones require software (mine doesn't), but most do. And like Dias de verano said, you'll also need a USB cable. If you tell us your phone's model, we can help you find the software and cable that are compatible for your phone.

It may be possible to keep using your camera. I also use a MicroSD like the one you described, and before I purchased a USB cable, I was using my digital camera. Before you plug the camera into your computer, go through the options and see if there is a setting for USB MODE or Data Mode or anything like that (if you're unsure, you can list the different options). If so, enable it and then plug it in. Then, make sure you actually access the camera's folder via My Computer, as there may be a certain subfolder that you have to use. When you drag and drop a file onto the camera's icon, you could possibly be adding it to the camera's memory rather than the memory card. Not all camera's support MicroSD, even with an adapter. A SD/MicroSD card reader or USB cable for your phone are the best options.

Solve : Unmountablest boot volume?

Answer»

I have a Dell latitude d820 laptop with a Hitachi Travelstar 100GB SATA HD (MODEL: HTS721010G9SA00).
Windows XP Professional OEM SP2.

Before you shoot me, I've read the FAQ, and searched the forum, and i've not found the solution to my problem, so please read the whole thing before jumping to conclusions. I've also done alot of googling and calling of the Microsoft helplines and i've yeilded nothing.

Recently I dropped the laptop from about 4.5 feet while it was on, and it bluescreened. I didn't get the error code but i'm sure it had something to do with my hard drive coming out. But that isn't the problem. After that incident, i popped the hard drive back in, it booted fine, operated without incident, went into standby and hibernate modes and CAME back up fine. Three days later, the last time i shut it down, I had a file open in Notepad which was unsaved, and when i went to shut down my computer, the shut down stopped to wait for Notepad to respond to the kill message while Notepad asked me if I wanted to save whatever document I was working on. I selected 'Yes' and almost simultaneously windows decided to kill Notepad. Right before the computer finished shutting down I got an error message saying something about an application failing to initialize, though I couldn't read it because windows killed it nearly immediately as it came up.

Windows hasn't booted since. The next time i tried to boot the computer, instead of getting the windows logo, i got alot of black and white TEXT telling me that windows failed to load properly last time i started it, Which was odd, since it hadn't done anything of the sort. I selected 'Start Windows Normally' and got
UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME
0x000000ED (0x86EA6900, 0xC000009C, 0x00000000, 0x00000000),
after watching my Windows logo and loading bar for 10 seconds.

Repeating the process for Last Known Good Settings (Your Last Known Settings That Worked) and each of the three Safe Mode flavors yeilded the same error message, with the only variance being the last four characters of the 0x86EAXXXX.

Using the CD provided by Dell with the Operating System on it (WinXP Pro OEM) i've started the Recovery Console quite a few times. Executed Fixboot, Fixmbr, Chkdisk (/p /r and sans parms) in the various ORDERS perscribed by the help articles i'd found and yeilded no solution.

Fixmbr executes in 0 seconds and says success, but does nothing as far as i can see, when I attempt to load windows via any of the options i'm presented with at start up, it goes to the windows loading logo screen, waits around 10 seconds, and then bluescreens with the above error.

Fixboot always claims that my file system is corrupt and writes a default NTFS boot sector to my hard drive, again with the loading and the 10 seconds of logo and the bluescreen.

Chkdsk without parameters says "the volume appears to be in good condition and so was not checked", with /p it says "Chkdsk is doing additional checking or recovery..." three times in rapid succession, climbs at a lugubrious pace towards 4%, rockets off to 22%, climbs rather slowly again to 25% and then promptly informs me that "the volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable errors". With /r Chkdsk repeats the process but finds unrecoverable errors at 50% instead. This of course, does not change the symptoms of my bootup bluescreen process.

I tried to examine my disk to see if i could recover my files by using a dir command at C: and retreived an "error during enumeration of directory structure". Undaunted, i attempted to cd into "Windows" which I know exists, and retreived "path or filename is invalid".

Needless to say, there are un-backed-up files on my hard drive which are of incredible importance to me, or I would've formatted it already.By the looks of things, you have done something seriously bad to your Hard Disk. I dont like your chances of retrieving any files from it.... I also think your hard drive is a goner.

You can try to remove the hard drive and connect it to another machine as a slave drive to see if you can get at your files. Also you can try to run repairs from a good system onto the slave drive. I think it may run them a little better that way and actually do something.
The laptop may have suffered other damage from the shock and the drive may not be as bad as it sounds...
2.5" to IDE converter:

10 Bucks at any Computer Store.
This will LET you hook up that drive to any desktop machine and retrieve your Data.
Be prepared well in advance...you may only get one shot at it. Because of this possibility i suggest COPYING disk to disk instead of attempting to burn it as the transfer speeds will be much greater.

It can always be burned later
Make sure the drive/partition you intend to copy to is about 1.5 to 2 times the total size of the laptop drive just in case...

Good Luck and we'll cross our collective fingers for you.The drive certainly isn't a goner, this is evident from the fact that the bootloader bootstraps correctly, all of the .sys files load up without a problem, and I see the windows logo along with the loading bar, and the images are not perturbed in any way. It looks like a completely normal boot process. This almost certainly couldn't be the case, and it almost certainly wouldn't give me the /exact/ same error codes every time if the hardware were malfunctioning, would it?Quote from: patio on May 16, 2008, 09:04:53 AM

Solve : vista...windows size in explorer?

Answer»

Hey everyone,
I had such good luck on here and I was telling a friend of mine and he wanted me to post a question for him. He has windows VISTA and browsing with explorer 7. He says he knows about hitting f11 to maximize the window but he wanted to KNOW how he could just have it maximize on its own without having to hit f11.
Also he said when he opens regular windows like control PANEL, they open small also.
Thanks for all your help..Maximize program's window, using "Maximize" button in upper right corner.
Hold CTRL key, and close window.
Next time, it should start maximized.
...but, sometimes Windows won't listen.
In this CASE, get: http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,25158-order,0-page,1-c,desktop/description.htmlThanks Broni,
