Solve : Boot screen changes??

Answer»

I recently had an encounter with some malware and thanks to that forum it has been taken care of. Since then my MEMORY check at boot up takes forever. Here's how things have changed.
Previously when I turned on the computer the memory check counter WOULD spin and complete the task in short order. Next the rest of the boot process would be visible and finally it would start the windows process. Now I turn on the computer and no memory check counter and no boot up play-by-play just a long WAIT. After well over a minute it goes to the windows process.
I have checked the bios settings and I don't see anything that has changed.Quote

...just a long wait.

Any message displayed during long wait?

Can you see the Windows logo at boot TIME?BIOS, check for "Quiet boot" or "quick boot" and try toggling that option. No messages displayed.
I can see the Windows logo.

BIOS is SET for quick boot.

I know how to delete... I was asking would it be okay to delete JUNK i had put into folders.

Why are you asking us? It's your choice. "Junk" seems to be what you have decided to CALL certain files. In English, the word "junk" is a slang word which means "trash" or "rubbish" or "STUFF that is not wanted any more".

What did you do to "clean all your stuff"?

What does this mean? "I looked at my files it had all zeroes"?

...and maybe lose the attitude, honeybun?

You know what? this is all I needed. I was affraid I just might SREW things up

Solve : How many items HAVE been indexed in Outlook with Search Indexer 4.0 on WinXP??

Answer»

Hello - In an effort to determine if my Outlook Personal files have been indexing PROPERLY in WinXP 2002 SP3, I NEED to find out if the Windows Search Indexer 4.0 is working properly when indexing the personal.pst file in my Outlook. Although there's a menu option under Tools >Instant Search > Indexing Status... that reveals the number of items REMAINING, is there a way to find the number of items that have actually been indexed ?
Also, is there any way to speed up the Indexing process ? I'm affraid that there is an application that may be slowing it to a crawl (ie., Roxio, LogMeIn ??, etc.) and preventing it from running quickly (eventhough I'm not active on the copmputer ie., over night). Does anyone know how we can find out if the indexer is in fact running and how to get it to index the remaining 24,223 items in my Outlook folders to completion?
THANK you.

Solve : Sound card not detected after windows service pack 3 update?

Answer»

Hello, I bought a gateway E4300 on ebay, and the sound was working fine before I installed Windows XP service pack 3, now my computer can't DETECT the sound card. I TRIED system restore, but it won't let me restore to any previous point. My device manager does show some sound card drivers are working properly, but I'm not sure if there the CORRECT ones for my card (which I unfortunately don't know the brand of).
My motherboard is D915GUX, and from looking at it, I think the sound card is integrated. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Michael Assuming that your speakers are properly connected (check the cables) try using one of the original drivers for that machine, from Gateway HERE. Scroll down to "Sound Downloads"

If one of these don't work, try ROLLING back the DRIVER in device manager..

Are you using the latest chipset driver for your computer? You may want to look into that, if all else fails.. Check out the 2007 version chipset driver for that board from here.

Solve : Able to View Offline/Down Website? Help!?

Second, I have no idea what you are talking about in your second post, but all you need to do is follow patio's ADVICE. BOOT to the XP CD, delete any existing partitions, recreate it or them, then format and install. And just so you know you cannot install any Windows OS to a RAW partition...

When I tried to turn it on it came up with the message NTLDR missing press Alt+Control+Del to restart. I looked it up on Del and this forum and THOUGHT whew, it's happened before, i can fix this. But EVEN after i inserted the disc, followed the recovery guidelines, nothing changes and the stupid thing still won't start up. I need to know either how I can fix this problem or how I can get my documents off the hard drive. PLEASE. Help.We don't know what kind of recovery DISKS you have. The standard XP setup disk has a thing called recovery console that can replace the NTLDR, if that is the problem.

Solve : cant find a display driver?

Answer»

the machine is an EliteGroup Computer Systems model GQ3051 an it has a fresh install of windows 98. All the drivers have been updated with the exception of the display driver. I cannot seem to find it anywhere and Ive spent hours online trying. When it boots up I get the error message "msing.dll file" file is missing or too old. What do I do? I have tried the computer manufacturer, the motherboard manufacturer, and microsoft, cnet downloads, etctry ma-config.comQuote from: jkolak on January 19, 2010, 09:17:52 AM

try ma-config.com

I found it QUITE convenient. It automatically detects your hardware and offers links to the latest drivers. It only steered me wrong once with a link to a sound card that uses my onboard chip, but doesn't work with the onboard version. I actually gave that site a shot and it gave me really decent results All my searches came up in French...not that there's anything wrong with that...I think there is a glitch. I'm sorry I was too lazy to post a clickable link:

http://www.ma-config.com/

There is a language toggle button for English and French at the upper right corner, but it's already set to English by default. (These are French DEVELOPERS). But if you look at the text, it's all in English except for the center of the PAGE on the News section. But just above that, you see the Large text and the very large buttons:

Explore your PC very easily.
Identify in a few seconds the hardware and software components of your computer

Start the detection
Find the drivers
Share my configuration
Generating a signature
Save as PDF
Detect offline

The "Start the Detection" button is selected by default, then you click the large green button to the right, just above the selection buttons, "Run the detection".

It works kind of like the detection process at NVIDIA, scans the computer. Then you have to scroll down for the results. The first time I thought it didn't do anything. It was so fast and I didn't see the text below had changed from "News" to the SCAN results.

After you look at your hardware list, you progress to the next STEP by clicking the large "Find the Drivers" button. Then scroll down again for the list of available drivers. It lists what version and date is currently installed, and then lists the version and dates of suggested drivers. I had to watch that carefully because it offered drivers with newer signature dates, but older version numbers. I think that is a natural consequence of an automated system, but I was able to find newer versions of some of my drivers than what I could find by Google.

Solve : No LAN/High-speed connections after reinstall of XP?

Answer»

Alright. I had vista on a storebought computer and had a multitude of problems so I went to the store and bought XP with sp3.

I got home and installed it, had some problems with the logininit but fixed that. Now I have everything LOADED and now I have no connections under the LAN/High-Speed section (well besides 1394 but thats firewire). I would appreciate some troubleshooting help

Thank you!You did not say what kind of computer.
If it is a laptop, you are in for a job.
Installing XP after Vista is not a good idea. You NEED to consult with the Manufacturer to see if the hardware supports XP. In fact, some of the makers have sent out XP machines with no install CD because they don't even have a simple install CD for XP. It was a custom load.
Here some would have told you to GET another hard drive, even a USED one, and try XP on it before you destroy the Vista.
And Vista, if used the right way, works good for many and fully supports the hardware.Have a look under Device Manager to see if your NIC card has been detected.

Start > Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager

Under 'Network Adapters', do you see your NIC card there?
If so, is there a yellow '!' or red 'X' under it?

Make and model of computer would be good to know.

Solve : nonworking microphone?

Answer»

My speakers work when I start up my computer but my microphone isn't WORKING. When I RUN my drivers and utilities disc my microphone will work but my speakers go dead. I can't get them to work at the same time. Quote

I can't get them to work at the same time.
Welcome to CH.
That is normal. When recording the microphone on and the speakers are off.
Do you have a special need to monitor then sound while recording?
Yes, I want to use Skype and talk to some friends using my computer camera, microphone and speakers. The mic. is in my monitor. It has a separate wire running out of the BACK of the monitor to the back of my PC. I did have both the mic. and the speakers functioning at the same time a couple of times, but recently nothing I try works. I want to hear what they are saying as well as talk to them. Skype and programs like that TAKE care of the speaker / microphone issue.

But if you SUSPECT the mic is damaged, you can try the sound recorder and it will give you a visual of you voice level.

Also, in control panel there is some place to test the level of the microphone.

But Skype should already have done that.

Have you recently installed other programs that use the microphone? Skype will show me that the mic. or speakers are working or not working but it won't correct any problems with the mic. or speakers. I have used the control panel and test hardware wizard many many times. The mic. isn't damaged because it works fine when the speakers aren't working. My sound recorder isn't listed under Accessories/Entertainment so I can't check my mic. that way. How do I find my sound recorder if it isn't listed under Accessories/Entertainment? I tried a search and it came up with nothing. Of course even if I find the sound recorder and check the mic. that isn't going to solve my problem. What OS do you have that does not have the sound recorder?

Anyway. you can use Audacitry. It has power without bloat.

If it does NOT read yur microphone, you need to check the recording settings in control panel.

Solve : Cannot boot from disk.?

Answer»

I have a Dell Dimension 8400, and started my computer on normal day and found that windows would not load. It would simply restart or the screen would go BLACK and the motherboard would beep.
I eventually switched from the 500gb drive to my 80gb harddrive, and booted from that disk, which worked fine. I can manage files on my 500gb while booting from this... so the HD isn't dead.

How do I go about fixing the problem with my 500gb harddrive?

thanks in advanceFirst thing is to get you most IMPORTANT data off the drive that does not boot.
Have you recently made some changes to the XP operating system on the big drive? Such as using a Partition manager, boot manager, installing Linux or anything like that changing the disk structure.
Lets just ASSUME that it is a fluke. NUT you can run the Ceckdsk command
Quote

Chkdsk is a utility that checks the computer's hard disk drives' status for any cross-linked or any additional errors with the hard disk drive. ...
An easy way to start it is to open My Computer, right click the suspect drive, select properties, clink tools tab, clink check now. It will tell you to reset the PC.

My guess is that part of the drive went sour. We hope it is just a minor thing that can be repaired. Don't overlook the [possibility of some kind of malware badness.

The Chhckdsk will repairsome disk errors, but unlikely will fix the boot problem. Next you will have to put the affected drive back in as master and boot from the CD. You want to first try recovery console.
We shall use FIXMBR and FIXBOOT, exit and reboot.
Recovery console is one of the options when you boot up the original XP install CD. NOT the recovery CD from some manufacturers, It must be the install CD.

You may have to do a repair install. Do you need instructions on that? Do you have the install CD for XP?

alright, I'm trying this now.
I won't need help with reinstalling XP, thanks. I've done it before... I just hoped I wouldn't have to spend an afternoon backing up all my files, and completely redoing my operating system....
Hope you get it fixed.
Here is a rueful link for anyone else reading this that wonders about what is the difference between a full install and a repair install.
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/help/install-reinstall-uninstallThe chkdsk yielded now results... it said everything was fine...
This really annoys me because I had to reformat last summer too ... isn't there anyway to reinstall xp manually without erasing everything on the disk?If you have a enterprise or RETAIL version of XP you shouyld be able to do the 'repair install' which will fix up the system and redo the registry, but not remove entries for the programs.

Some OEM version os XP don't allow this, but I have found taht both the HP and the DELL versions of XP work just the the standard XP when it comes to install options.

Solve : BSOD, access files in dos from harddrive, (XP)?

Answer»

Hi, I 'am not sure if this should be in the dos section or this one. Can anyone tell me how to access the files in windows XP from dos? On my sisters P.C. i installed a update DRIVER (nvida geforce fx5200). when i rebooted i got the BSOD with a stop message (the numbers and code don't matter now). None of the options on the safe screen worked it just rebooted to the blue screen.

I tried the repair option on the XP disk but it ASKED for a password and there has never been one used, in fact the disk as never been used since my sister purchased the PC. The only option I had was to format and reinstall windows.

If i could have got into one of the options on the safe mode screen i could have sorted it. There is a way of accessing the files on the harddrive in dos. Can anyone please tell me how, thanks(just in case it happens again) johnRepair installation doesn't ask for password, Recovery Console may.
Which one is it?Quote

Did you try leaving the password blank?

Format = Erase. You have probaly lost all of the data from that hard drive.

You could try using a utility like one of these to recover the data.

http://www.recuva.com/Hi,thanks for replying. The XP CD (home edition) is the one my sister got when she purchased the PC at a time when they were supplying disks with new machines.

Yes I did try not putting a password in. but it did not work. Has regards the personal INFORMATION, before I formatted I connected it to a PC as a slave drive and got the information that way. ( the first time it would not work i STILL got the BSOD evan as a slave drive)

Formatting was a last resort. I want to know how to access the harddrive from dos for when it happens again. regards john

I have REOPENED this to add: I don't want to recover personal files. I want to look at the files on the harddrive in dos to see whats causing the problem john

Solve : BSOD on startup. new hd windows wants reg.?

Answer»

Yesterday I was watching some videos online when my anti-virus detected somthing put onto my computer. I ran Mbam and it dectected 19 infections, I clicked remove and it asked me to restart. I did. Upon windows XP loading (while blue bar loading bar is going) I get a BSOD(even booting to safemode). I stupidly did not write down the name of the infection. and all I remember is it started with an 'E' and was a trojan.

Today I put in a new hard drive and installed windows it now WANTS me to register it; however I do not know where my orignal cd sleave with this info on it is.

My question(s)are: FIRSTLY; Is Microsoft going to disable this new copy of XP i have installed if I dont register it?
Is there anyway to show/prove to them that it is my copy of XP and that I have to switch HDs.

also: is there anyway for me to recover my old HDs copy of XP? I do not care much about the other software/pictures on it; but It seems to me if I can just get back on my old windows boot I can avoid the mess with the XP registration.

Thank you in advance, If you need anymore info let me know and I'll post asap.1) You mean activate, not register.
2) Just call the 800 number and talk to Microsoft and explain the situation
3) If your AV utility found the problem why did you run MalwareBytes?
4) Yes. Run a boot time AV SCAN on the original hd.How do you run a boot time AV scan without preseting it before logoff? If your current AV doesn't have a cd with a boot time scan included, you download a boot time av scanner and burn it to cd. And again, why didn't you scan with your av instead of (or at least in ADDITION to) Malware Bytes? MB is not an antivirus utility.Stupidity/forgetfulness I suppose.Well, okay. I can relate. If you "slave" the old hard drive in your working system, you can scan it for malware.

You can also retrieve the "Product Key" of its operating system using the Nirsoft utility ProduKey.

Download, unzip the program, and execute it. From the top menu bar select "File ---> Select Source". Play around with the options within the resulting "Select Source" window. ONE of them should work for you.

I am making a backup of Documents and Settings onto a thumb drive.
May I ask why you're TRYING to do that?backupWhat POSSIBLE good WOULD that do? Use an Imaging Utility. Create an image of the system partition (you can save it to your usb drive if you like). The image will, of course, include the Docs & Settings FOLDER. But just backup up that entire folder makes no sense at all. It's just another backup in case my hd goes down. Everything I need is in the docs and settings folder. It's about 6GB worth of data. Not sure why I need to complicate it ... don't have image iso software...You can download good, free imaging software. The documents and settings folder on its own is completely useless.Well, there's a lot I don't know. I do know that my docs, pics, etc are all in the documents and settings folder. Anyway, thanks for your help. Can you suggest a good imaging software? They are in your "My Documents" folder. If you want to backup up that, that makes sense - but not the entire Documents & Settings folder.

Here's a LINK to free disk imaging software: http://www.thefreecountry.com/utilities/backupandimage.shtmlYeah, you're right ... I only need to backup "My Documents." Thanks for your help.Yep

Solve : Direct transfer to FTP from HTTP?

Answer»

This is kind of weird and I'm not really even sure how to explain it. My bandwidth is pretty slow at home, so I use my office connection to DOWNLOAD updates for games and other stuff. However, we also use Smart Filter to block traffic to many SITES including the ones I used to download game patches. With this said, i've been having my friends download the files, then upload to my FTP site, then I can download from there. I'm the local IT and we have low volume network traffic, so using up bandwidth isn't an issue.

My question is, is there a way to directly TRANSFER a public download via some type of server/client sided application to my FTP site, like a mirror? It's basically DOWNLOADING then Uploading without the middle man.

Solve : auto shut down/battery icon?

Had to reinstall xp home addition on my laptop, after I did, whenever I go to shut down the computer it stops on a window that says, its safe to turn your computer off. It used to shut off the computer automatically, not any more. Any sugestions?
Also after reinstallation when you unplug the power cord you don't see the battery icon in the task bar to TELL you how much power is left in it. It used to do that too,Any help would be apreciated. thanks How did you reinstall XP? Did you use a recovery partition or a disk? If you used a disk, was it the one that came with your computer? After resinstalling XP did you install the chipset DRIVER?I reloaded from original DISKS that came with computer.
Also what is chipset driver?I don't know what "the original disks" are. If you reinstalled the OS from scratch you need to find the disk with the drivers and install the chipset driver followed by all other drivers. The disks I used to reinstall were a SET of 5 disks named "hp quickrestore system
recovery Cd's" (microsoft windows XP Home SP1) After they were installed the screen
said it could not find an OS,then I put in the hp notebook Operating System CD in.
The laptop seems to work ok except for the two things I origanally asked about.
Thanks for the help
One of those five disks should say "drivers" or "drivers and utilities" or SOMETHING similar on it. Do you have it?The disks are numbered 1 thru 5 with no other info on them, when the first disk was
done it said to install the second one, and so on.

Solve : Reinstallation of Windows not what I had in mind...?

Answer»

Hello

Recently my computer caught a virus which practically destroyed it.

I had to reinstall my copy of windows XP media centre, but unfortunately it doesnt have any of the drivers for my USB wifi antenna, and it ALSO has no sound drivers and possibly one or two other things.

I had an update disk, but it wouldnt work at all.

I am currently downloading windows XP service pack 3 on my linux to transwe. WIll this be compatible with media centre?

Will it also contain drivers for a USB antenna?

If not, where can I download one? I have no idea what make the USB antenna actually is, is there an industry standard for the drivers which will be included in SP3?

Will it also have the sound drivers for my 5.1 logitech surround or will I NEED to obtain them seperately.

Thanks, hope someone can help Quote

Will it also contain drivers for a USB antenna?

I don't know what that means.

Many USB wireless devices require special drivers for windows. You have to read the label very carefully. One maker had seven different drivers and the models have very slight changes to the model NUMBER. Drove me crazy. Strike that, I am OK. List the Make and Model of the USB device and we'll see if we can track down a driver...
Didn't it come with an INSTALL CD ? ?
Either way we should be able to find it.

Solve : Re-Installed XP With Different Disk Than Original-How do I activate??

Answer»

My computer had to have a clean re-installation of Windows XP and the installation has gone fine. I REALIZE I still have to install the drivers for most of the programs, etc; but my question is this.....

I did not have the original installation disk as Gateway did not supply it. I could not GET into the recovery partition so I had to do a clean re-install. Not having the original disk, I had to use another xp disk.

What do I have to do to get Windows activated without it stating it is a pirated copy?

Thanks in advance.[removed non-tolerated material... geez ]Quote

There's ways to fake an activation.
Advice like that won't be tolerated on this board.

Bronis is r right.

This here place is a very good forum and telling people how to cheat downgrades the value of this site.

You really need to pester Gateway and tell them how upset your are that the had to make things so hard for you. If you call Microsoft for help, and it you get through, that is about what they will tell you. If you really persist, they have provide you with a CD that will reload the recovery partition for you. You just have to try hard. Do you have the Windows PRODUCT Key? It should be in your documentation that your RECEIVED with your computer. Some manufacturers ALSO apply the product key sticker somewhere on the computer case. Once you have the product key, you can enter it into your Windows installation by clicking on "Resolve Now".

Solve : Services.exe is using my whole CPU?

Answer»

I am RUNNING XP profesional SP3, and mostly i use the computer for games or graphics programs. a few days ago i woke it up from hibernation and it toldl me there had been an error reloading the hibernation data, so it asked me to dump the data and reboot, i said yes. then later that day all was fine i plugged in an old HP psc1200. i waited for it to do its install new hardware dance, then i went through the steps to see if it would run it without me having to go to the library and find the drivers on the internet, it said it could not find the drivers, so i clicked the finished button, then a little box poped up from the tray and said there has been a problem trying to install your new hardware, and disappeared. next thing i know everything is going slow, so i open the task manager, which TAKES about 3 minutes, then it shows me the CPU usage and i see that services.exe is consuming 99% of the CPU and memory usage is only running at 164mbs. i first try restarting to see if that will fix it, but it doesn't, and it takes a good 15 minutes for it to log me in after i type my password in. fianlly i look at the task manager again and see that it is still running at 99%. i have unplugged the printer and tried again but no success.
what can i do to fix this? is it a hardware problem? this is the only windows computer in my house, i really need it operational. I would love any help possible!!Start by running a full scan with BOTH your AV and MalwareBytesI have neither on this computer. I never installed any type of anti-virus because it USED to much memory when i tried rendering things with my graphics programs. plus the system is entirly cut off from the internet. i tried to install regcure last night to see if maybe it was a registry problem and i waited a good 30 minutes and the installer still had not launched. the cpu usage is to the point that nothing can be done without waiting for 15 to 30 minutes(took 10 to open my documents folder). i'l try installing avg and MalwareBytes and see what happens, hopefully it will work. thankyou.Quote from: luckymoonboy1 on JANUARY 09, 2010, 10:47:10 AM

I never installed any type of anti-virus because it used to much memory when i tried rendering things with my graphics programs
That's the problem. Either use an AV or be prepared for your system to become infected at some point. MalwareBytes is NOT a replacement for an AV.i can try but the system has never had any type of outside contact from anything except installer disks, and my usb drive, once, about a year ago to install OO and Blender. and last night when i tried to install regcure.Once is enough - sorry. There are any number of good AV's that will not tax your system.thankyou, i will see what i can do with AVG. it has worked for me in the past.ah, well problem solved! in the process of instlling AVG in safe mode the strain was too much. my computer has passed away. the system restarted, now when it gets around to showing the XP logo with the loading bar the computer automaticly restarts itself even in safe mode and repeats the process till i manualy shut it off, i guess this is for the best, it tells me to switch over to ubuntu only, i'll just use my windows HD as a slave drive so i dont have to scanenge my data and find a new place for it. Thank you for all your help. its too bad it didn't work i appriciate it. if you think there is a manual way to go in with LINUX and repair somthing that would be great. if this is the end, well thankyou. may you RIP Windows.

- If you did not do a wubi install but the normal ubuntu install, simply click - Places/x.0 GB Media (computer, x.0GB Media)

- If you did not do a wubi install but the normal ubuntu install, and you cannot see the Media Drive, try mounting your windows drive with the ntfs configuration tool: http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/mountwindows

- check: "filesystem/host" regardless

- If you do not have any version of linux installed but have come across this problem (Bsod), boot up a live ubuntu cd:

Solve : System restore does not restore?

Answer» YESTERDAY I INSTALLED a flash drive. It is "MYGS Drive (J:)". It has 5 files in it, one of which is "BOB-PC. That file has one "backup set" which I ran after I installed the flash drive. The reason I installed the flash drive was to keep my back ups there. When I try to run a "system restore" it never asks where the back up is but just runs it. When it is done it gives me an error message and says the back up did not run. Before I installed the flash drive the back ups were in (D:) and ran fine. SINCE the back ups are now in (J:) I think it should ask where the back ups are but it doesn't. Any suggestions will be appreciated. BobFirst, you have to decide, if your question is about backup, or system restore.
Backup can be stored anywhere, while restore points not.
All drives, and partitions have System Volume Information folder, where restore points are stored; the folder can't be relocated.I could not get ride of my problem so I just went to Gateway, they make E Machines and asked them for a factory restart. They restarted the computer as it was when I bought it. This was good EXCEPT that I had to get all the updates. The whole procedure took at least 6 hours. Makes me want to be more careful what button I click on. I just want to let you know you can start over!!! BobQuote from: Bobh on February 19, 2009, 03:03:45 PM

that was completely unnecessary....I'm not too smart about computers. Nobody had any suggestions so I did the only thing I knew. What should I have done? Bobthere was nothing wrong with the PC. you didn't describe any problems that weren't by design.

I think your beating your head against a wall repeatedly, as well. You appear fixated with "backups" onto these flash drives, but you don't seem to recognize that this doesn't refer to the Operating system itself, but the more important, irreplacable items, such as documents you've created- STUFF that can't easily be recovered.

an OS can be reinstalled, applications, settings changed back, etc.-but if you reformat and lose an important document, it's gone. This is the premise behind backups.

if you get a large enough external drive, you can perform imaged backups of your system drive, but Personally I find my data far more valuable then all the hardware used to store it and the software used to work with it, so I always just back up the few important folders I have.

Solve : up-grading memory?

Answer»

I'm not sure I'm on the correct forum. I have an old dell P111, I'm using xp. I have 192 MB ram. I went to the task manager and looked at Physical memory.

Total-- 194792
available-- 13256, I don't know if that number is low? Memory slot 1--64 mb, memory slot 2--128 mb.

I have DSL,but, SOMETIMES it sure is slow. I do defrag once in a while. I'm not sure if it is possible to upgrade the memory, It's an old computer. thanksWhat version of Windows do you have? Besides defragging, do you use any spyware REMOVAL tools and do you have an anti-virus PROGRAM installed? Do you do regular disk/file cleanup using Windows Disk Cleanup or some other program such as CCleaner?

Do you know the maximum memory your computer can have? If not, visit www.crucial.com and use their memory advisor. Hello, thanks for the reply. I use windows XP, I also use a free antivirus program. I did use the clean disk program and it helped a bunch, thanks.

Max memory is 512 mb, I'm using 192 mb. Because this a dell computer, if I upgraded the memory, do I have to use dell memory? Because slot 1 for memory is 64mb, would you upgrade to 128 mb or more? Price is a concern. thanksNo, you do not have to use Dell memory. Just be sure to get the RIGHT type of memory. If you buy online, sites such as www.crucial.com and www.kingston.com have good memory selector tools to help you get the right memory.

If possible, I'd buy a 256MB module to boost your total to 384MB.

No need to let the battery run down as a way to force a shutdown. Just hold the power button down for 4 seconds; on most systems, that will turn the power off.

such as Google desktop, Adobe update, ipod something.

My 5 year old grandson played with the machine.Download & run Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel and uncheck any processes you don't want starting with the system. You might also want to go to the malware section of this forum and follow the instructions at the top of that page so your system can be checked for malware (just in case). If there's anything else you want help with you need to provide details.Clicking on the desktop icons - no response.

I have a 5 year old IBM Thinkpad with Windows XP Professional

I just read your last NOTE. I cannot get onto the internet.

I'm on another macine in my home taliking to you.
Then by all means go to the malware forum and follow the instructions in the ANNOUNCEMENT at the top of that page.PROBLEM SOLVED.

My grandson broke the mouse. I saw something earlier about problems with a mouse, but didn't make any connection initially. I TRIED the built-in and everything worked fine.
I took the mouse from the other macine and it works.

Thank you all for your help and concern.Glad you got it worked out. Thanks for posting back.

Solve : Debug Assertion Failed! Help me ,please !?

Answer»

The FOLLOWING is my problem:

Everytime when I'm undergoing " explore.exe " ,
( Like " At the Desktop " or " viewing the file folders " )

as I " press the right botton " or " press ' Ctrl + V ' ( paste on some file ) "
then would pop up a window named : Microsoft Visual C++ Debug Library

Inside the box reads:

Debug Assertion Failed!

Program:C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE
File:dtoxtm64.c
Line:67

Expression:(((long)(yr-1900)>=_BASE_YEAR)&&((long)(yr-1900)<=_MAX_YEAR64))

For information on how your program can CAUSE an assertion
failure, SEE the Visual C++ documentation on asserts.

(Press Retry to debug the application)

Any time Quote from: JJ 3000 on SEPTEMBER 13, 2008, 02:12:12 AM

I'm not sure if this will work but you can try this:
CLICK START then Run and type in sfc /scannow and press enter.
Have your Windows CD handy, as it will ask for it.

what is wrong when you type that in and the blank miniscreen flashes on for LIKE a micro sec but NOTHING else happens

Solve : Mouse/Keyboard Scrolling Trouble??

Answer»

Well three days ago I bought a wireless keyboard and mouse bundle and yesterday my computer started acting up. Internet pages would scroll to the bottom of the page and when I tried to scroll up it would go straight back down. Also, on Start menu, it would scroll through all of the options without stopping. It was as if the down key was being HELD, so I obviously thought it was a problem with the keyboard or mouse. So I reset the keyboard and mouse connections, no change. I then unplugged the USB receiver, no change. Which made me think that it is something to do with the computer and not the keyboard or mouse. Thanks for reading and if you know anything it would be a huge help and I'd be very grateful Have you tries a different mouse and keyboard? It sounds like it is the mouse or keyboard at fault, maybe an internal fault in one of them, so that resetting them will have no affect. Thanks I'll try that and see if it works OK, well let us know if it resolves the ISSUE Thanks a lot for your help but I realised that it was because I hadn't unplugged the LAST keyboards receiver, and a key must have been pressed on it He he sorry for the trouble
