my computer runs slow i have antivirus it says no viruses your computer is running nomrly but it is not i have also installed free registry cleaners but it only fixes
7 errors when i have 605 errors and this thing comes up virtual memory to low
can you help me out i have a dell personel computer microsoft WINDOWS xp PROFESSIONAL thank you
How much RAM have you got?

What size is your hard drive? What kind of antivirus do you have?

It sounds like your antivirus is saying you have errors in your registry. Its unusual for antivirus to even mention registry unless its built in to clean the registry, it sounds like you could have adware. use hijackthis

Solve : Installing windows on a Mac?

Answer»

I am wondering ... they say that running windows on mac using the bootcamp software has better performance than does running windows normally on a PC?

And you can't remove MacOS from a Mac computer and run ONLY windows or linux or whatever? Why buy a MAC if all U want is to run Win? One reason Wins runs better on MACs is because MAC r built better. Now wait everyone before we get into the Mac vs Wins war of words. MAC usually have more of a hi end hardware then buying a PC from the self. If u want to run Wins just but any PC and upgrade. Or just upgrade your exciting PC.Well, I was just wondering, not that I'd get a mac anytime soon. I have a pc which does me just fine so .....

Macs are built better? Wow, then perhaps so many milliions of pc guys lucked out Personally I THINK Mac fans are dorks. I would be ashamed to be seen with a Mac.
It 's not so much "so many millions of PC guys lucked out" . I t is more of the the logic board is built. Wins was MADE to run on a any MB, while OS X was design to on a specific logic board. That is why Apple is sometime refer to more has a hardware company then a SW company. I don't think this so true today with Unix being the foundation of OS X.

And as Dias de verano, Mac fans might be dorks. U might be ashamed to be seen with a Mac. But when was the last time u bragged about your Win box? Ask any Mac owner they will start BRAGGING and telling u how much better their Mac compare to a Win box. When was the last time u heard a Win box being better then a Mac?Quote

Ask any Mac owner they will start bragging and telling u how much better their Mac compare to a Win box. When was the last time u heard a Win box being better then a Mac?

There are a lot of people who will tell you their Win systems are better than Macs.

With that kind of reasoning, my country's better than your country. Quote from: midsail on May 02, 2009, 05:10:51 AM

I don't see computers, Mac or others, as things to "brag about", but then I am aged more than 14.

Well spotted.
Some people like the design of the MacBook or iMac, but they want the flexability of Windows. I have a MacBook that I run Windows exclusively on. It is the best way to run Windows on a laptop, in my opinion, because you get a basic copy of Windows without all that other crappy software that OEM's put on their laptops. Most of it is useless and slows down your laptop.MacBook + iMac = iBook

Hehe, nice design.I sure am GLAD I'm not downwind from all of this...

Solve : Copy of windows did not pass windows Validation?

Answer»

Hi All,
My Laptop computer recently poped up a messege that reads; " You may be a victim of software counterfeiting. This copy of windows did not pass genuine windows validation". Please i dont KNOW how to fix this problem. I have downloaded all the new UPDATES and just lately i upgraded from Windows XP PACK 2 to pack 3 sucessfully on the web but the MESSAGE wont disappear.
Please does anyone know how I can solve this problem?

GoodhopeBefore we answer your question we need some more information.
How long have you have this computer? Where or how did you get it? From a retail outlet? Mail order? eBay? From a friend?
It should be the RESPONSIBILITY of the seller to ensure that the software is legal. Did the seller indicate to you that the XP version was only a Demo?
Has this message ever come up before? Did you ever contact Microsoft about this? Do you have a receipt for the sale of the computer with a detail description of what software it had?
Was this computer purchased in the USA, Canada or UK?If you know that the license that you have is official, you just have to call Microsoft and give them some information and they will give you a new key to use.Click Here...

Solve : Itunes library formatting?

Answer» YESTERDAY I nuked my harddrive and loaded XP plus XP service pac2. Everything is working fine accept my itunes. I am getting a message: "ITunes has detected a problem with your audio configuration. Audio/Video playback may not operate properly". I downloaded itunes 8.1.1 and it POPULATED my library fine, but song will not launch. Itunes support says my library of songs are not formatted and it is a CONFLICT with XP. Any ideas? You need to install Quicktime .

http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/

Since you just reinstalled windows I BET you don't have it installed, and others have said it fixed the problem.

You can also try this.

Quote
Open QuickTime Player and go to 'Edit' -> 'Preferences' -> 'QuickTime Preferences' -> 'Audio' -- Here you will see a Device is needed that will play your sound. Select 'Audio Playback and Recording Devices'. I have Realtek AC'97 as my device. I had to reinstall it to fix my problem. If you are having an Audio problem it may be DUE to having no device or an improper device.

Solve : PARTITION NOT RECOGNISED?

Answer»

I have got a hard disk of 40 GB which ahas two partitions after full formatting.... another hard disk of 160 gb is having all data... but after reloading os the 2nd hard disk which also had 2 partitions is now shown as a single partiotion and when I try to acess the hard disk... Message appears that "DISK IS NOR FORMATTED... DO YOU WANT TO FORMAT DISK NOW"... PLS HELPSorry, I do not understand which drive has the two partitions. Also, it is very important you tell which version of XP you are using. You must have the XP sp-2 to use the 160GB drive, even if it has two partitions.
Most often the PROBLEM you have is because of problems with the cables or the connectors. You did not say either drive was a SATA, so we think you have just the standard drives used on desktop PCs. (SATA drives have issues in Windows XP.)
Also the program you had used to format the drive may not have been the right program. Also, with older computers a drive formatted in ONE PC may not be seen on another PC because of BIOS trouble in older machines and very large Disk Drives.
Please provide some more INFORMATION.

Solve : Index in Help and Support blank with red x?

Answer»

HP NOTEBOOK (dv 4000 series, XP) has its own help+support center that includes Microsoft help; it searches several databases. Had to restore XP to my computer after a hard-drive crash,so had to reinstall the HP H+S center from the orig disk. Since then, when I clickon the "Index" tab, the cursed white box with the demonic red X appears.

(I have read and followed the directions in another post re. the same PROBLEM with graphic files but my internet options were fine. I am allowing all pictures, including html, to download, have checked to be sure java is enabled, etc).

I right-clicked the x: the properties begin with an html icon rep. the index, followed by "Unavailable." Protocol is "Unknown Protocol." The address given is hcp://system/panels/subpanels/index.html. I searched the system files on my computer, but no LUCK. I went on line, but, as I suspected, that's not a valid url.

Next, I uninstalled the help and support center from my computer, downloaded it from the Hewlett-Packard website, and reinstalled it. When I clicked on Index, keeping my fingers crossed, I was INSANELY dismayed to find the white box, red x again.

I have searched the forums on the HP website to no avail, nor is there anything on topic in the Microsoft help+support center--I've taken all the steps, as far as I know, but have probably overlooked something as plain as the nose on my face.
What have I done??? Thanks in advance for your help.

Solve : I can't access User Accounts in XP?

Answer»

If I go to START, then Control Panel, and then click on USER ACCOUNTS, nothing happens. I can't get to the User Accounts for some reason, and I'd like to delete some of them to create more space on the computer.Have you tried to delete them in Safe Mode?Quote from: JJ 3000 on November 25, 2008, 08:58:05 PM

Have you tried to delete them in Safe Mode?

I just tried that---and they don't all appear. I have six accounts, including mine and all of my children and my wife. Those accounts all appear on the log in screen as icons, but when I went to safe mode, they didn't all appear. In fact, only mine, and one I named "The Administrator" (not to be confused with the Administrator account that is created automatically by Windows), appear, and missing are Ann, Rebecca, Benjamin, and so forth. You need to do some BASIC troubleshooting to to diagnose this problem.

1. Go to Start/Run and type: eventvwr.msc and press OK. This will open
the Event Viewer. Click the Applications item on the left side. On the right
side, look for any "X" error messages that may be displayed. Double click
the error entry to see the details. The specific module causing the error
will be shown there.

2. Go to Start/Run and type: msinfo32 and press OK. Click on
Components/Problem Devices to see any hardware that may be having problems.
Click on Software
Environment/Windows Error Reporting to see any possible
conflicts and or error messages.

also you can try this:
Click Start/Run and type control userpasswords and click ok. Does this
open the
user accounts?

Also, is this a fresh install of XP and if so did you check hardware compatibility before installing XP on that
computer?

I hope this help!

It did not open the user accounts, but maybe I typed it in wrong. Is it just like you have it, "control userpasswords"?

Nope. It's not a fresh install. If any of this helps to identify the problem, let me know as it means nothing to me other than there are some errors, but why and how to get rid of them, I don't know.

Well, I don't know if I have VSS, but I'm getting that error message about it. I'm using the Avast free version AV, and Komodo Firewall. As far as spyware removers, I have Ad-Aware, Spybot, and SuperAntiSpyware.

8193 is all that I see for the VSS error. Other than that, it gives the time, date, etc. Just that big RED error X and that's about it.Note Do not use this method if you want to save your restore points for System Restore

1. Click Start, click Run, type msconfig, and then click OK.
2. On the General tab, click DIAGNOSTIC Startup, and then click OK.
3. Restart your computer.

If the problem does not OCCUR, use Selective startup mode to try to find the problem by turning individual services and startup programs on or off.

see if you can go into your accounts now.

Solve : Windows XP problems. Reboots everytime Windows screen comes up.?

Answer»

Computer was built by a reputable service shop. 4 years old. Brother gave up on it and bought a new computer, and gave this one to me to WORK on. Not much software on it. Used mainly for internet exploring. No gaming. Only had MS Office 2003 on it. AMD processor 3500. Asus board.

Boots to Windows screen. Varies 10 seconds to a few minutes, the computer reboots. Happens every time. Message comes up before the reboot that there was a system failure, and asks me to SEND or don't send the report. I don't care about losing anything on this, I can reload XP.

What should I do?

DarkmanIf u have a XP CD boot from it. Do like if u were going to install XP. DO NOT CHOOSE REFORMAT. Keep following instructions until a fix this OPTION appear. Select this option, let it run. Write back and let us known what happens.Reseat your ram and if no change swap in a power supply that you know is good. Make sure your fans are working and clean.
A four year old power supply is just that...four years old....most of the ones I change are in that time frame....some a little earlier, some a little later.
If it's a Hand-me-down computer and you don't care about losing any of the data, then go ahead and wipe it out. That's the first thing I do when I GET a used computer.

However, the OPERATING system may not be the cause of your problem.

Can you post the exact error message?try to go to safe mode and select system restore .... you must choose the earliest restore point

Solve : HP Pavilion ze4101 problems?

Answer»

My son has a HP Pavilion ze4101 laptop. He gave it to me to fix as it had a couple issues. The first ISSUE was where the power cord plugs into the laptop. The connector on the motherboard had come loose so I took it apart and re soldered it. Evidently this is a common problem with this model.

The second problem, and more serious is the virus problem. I ran a boot time scan and must have deleted an important part of Windows Now I get to the log in screen and when I click a user, it tries to start and goes right back to the log in screen. When it tries to start it says (loading personal settings, I get a very brief look at the desktop, and it goes back to the log in screen and says (saving personal settings).

I think I am going to have to try a repair install. Problem is the restore disks are 130 miles away, which gets me to my question.

Can I use a different xp cd to do the repair, or do I need the original? What are the chances of loosing the data on the hd when doing a repair install? I don't think there is anything on the hd that needs saving, but if there is I have an adapter so I can hook it to a desktop.I would try repairing using the disc you have. The OEM version should have the same files on it for the most part. If it doesn't work then I would do a reformat and install windows since there is nothing you need on the hard drive. If you do this the OEM disc may become useless in the FUTURE though since you are removing the vendor specific files.
DennisAs long as the XP CD matches both the version : Pro=Pro...Home = Home and the installed service packs match then any XP CD will do.
Repair Install of XP
Done properly all your data and APPS will be intact...
Done improperly your apps and data will be gone but you will have a clean install of XP
So read theru it to get familiar and print out a reference copy.

If he is really concerned about losing data then grab one of these first:

This enables you to hook his laptop drive to your desktop machine as a slave and copy/burn data...

An OEM CD will only wipe everything and take the machine back to Day One status...
DO NOT do this if he wants his data. You might WANT to try ridding your pc of malware first. Can you get into safe mode to run antivirus. This might get you up and running....In addition does your HP product have a recovery program hidden on the hard drive. Some more info here....

Solve : erase hard drive start over .?

Answer»

currently has windows NT 4.0 would like to erase and install Linux Ubunta 8.04. what is the best steps to make this successful. Put in the Ubuntu CD, boot from it, and format the hard drive to install the Operating System.

Curious though, what are your computer specs? (RAM, Processor Speed, Hard Drive Capacity)x86 family 15 model 0 stepping 10 at/at compatible ram 26,300 kb 4.00-1381 ie 5 60.02600.000, intel petinum 4. I have installation cdfor window x p home edition that is no longer installed in any of my computers. This one is old computer not SURE if I would have alot of problems. to erase the hard drive in md-dos I have to put in fdisk to erase.
just do it carbon's way to get ubuntu onto your computer, forget about ms-dos. That's not important if you're leaving the windows world entirely. I actually highly recommend you do NOT put Ubuntu on that computer. 26MB RAM? Can you confirm that?
Also, can you find out your processor speed? (e.g. 2.4 GHz)
What about your hard drive size? (e.g. 70GB)

These are Ubuntu's System Requirements:
http://www.easy-ubuntu-linux.com/ubuntu-system-requirements.html

Right now, the computer doens't MEET the requirements. IMO, if Windows NT works, I would leave it.It's unlikely a P4 has that amount of RAM....probably 256 with some being borrowed by the vid card perhaps...what's wrong with win NT? Don't like it or something? You might want to pick up a live CD and TEST it out to see its performance on your pc. Live CD definitely not as good as the OS installed directly onto hard drive but it gives you an idea without you losing windows then finding that linux is not performing well on your MACHINE and you can't go back without more work.

Solve : ie pages will not go to full size?

Answer»

when i click on windows to open up pages they only go to 1/2 size weather its 1/2/or3 pages opened up to work on , is they somewhere i can set them to full size , harryI'm not so sure what you mean by this.

If you mean it's just zooming out, there's a button in the lower right CORNER of Internet Explorer that should say something like 50% or 100%. Click it to restore it to normal zoom level (100%).

Hope this helps!the setting is always at 100% , when i log on and go onto my home page or any

page it comes up 50% and i have to expand it at the top right corner , there must be

a fix somewhere for this , harryHarry, if I understand correctly, put your mouse on the bottom right hand corner of your page and slowly stretch the page dragging the bottom right hand corner of the page down to the area just above the clock. Then close the page with the red X in the top right hand corner. The next time the page reopens it should open to full page. You mean, the IE windows does not appear in full SCREEN?

I'm pretty sure there is a setting for that, to choose WHETHER or not new windows open in full screen.

What IE version are you using?
Ever considered Firefox?Try this. After you open the browser and maximize it, hold down the left-shift key and close the browser. Now open it again. Does it open maximized?

ALAN <>< ie7 i'm on , when i open the first window it's full size , every other one say to read an e-mail or go to CH are 1/2 size and they used to be full size i can make them full

there is a setting but i cannot find it

people on ch have said about firefox , to explain it to me , is it the same as windows only better and would i have to take windows out Try Alan's suggestion above Harry...
In regards to FireFox you have been misled...it's just another browser...it is simply installed and runs just like IE although much better...
No changes to Windows are neccessary at all.

Solve : Computer restarts non-stop after BIOS. Help please?

Answer»

My computer keeps restarting everytime, when it gets to the windows xp loading screen where the blue bar runs. I don't see that screen though, it just restarts at that point (Around 3 seconds into the load). It gives me a bsod screen but it's there only for a micro second. And keeps restarting no matter what i try.

I haven't changed any HARDWARE or software whatsoever. I just had an internet problem, and decided to restart my computer after resetting my router. Now, that computer won't start up.

Safe mode won't work either, as it restarts as it loads into safe mode. Anyone got any suggestions?Start your computer back up and tap F8 to get into the advanced startup options. Here, choose "Disable automatic restarts on system failure" This should keep it from restarting. The blue screen error message should stay on the screen now. Write down that error and post back with it.

Have you made any hardware or software changes latley? Here it is, exactly how it showed up:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer If this screen appears again, FOLLOW these steps:

Disable or uninstall any anti-virus, disk defragmentation or backup utilities. Check your hard drive configuration and check for any updated drivers. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

*** Stop: 0x00000024 (0x00190203, 0x8A4D2988, 0xC0000102, 0x00000000)

A weird thing I noticed was that the second number set "0x8A4D2988" came up different every time I restarted my computer; I"m not much of a computer wiz- what does that mean?stop 0x00000024 means a problem with your file system.

try here:

http://www.geekswhoknow.com/articles/stop-0x00000024-0x0000024-0x24-ntfs-file-sys-error-code.htmI had a very similar problem for almost a week. A friend of mine suggested that I use "system restore" to get back to an earlier date where everything was working properly.
I did that and now my laptop is working perfectly. SUGGEST you try that. Hope it works for you.aside from, of course, the fact that he can't boot his machine to perform the system restore...Mm, I have a big problem with the link you sent me. I have no floppy drive on neither this laptop I"m using to post with, or my desktop that isn't working. What do you suggest I do :[?Do you have a windows XP CD? If so, you should be able to boot into the recovery console.I think I"ve already tried that before, but it ended up restarting. I'm not POSITIVE I did that though, so I'll do that and get back to you.

In the meantime, is there anyway to get that ntfs recovery thing on a USB with a program? I"ve searched all over the internet but I haven't found one that was free--only one's that required floppys or bootable CDs.Quote from: BC_Programmer on November 26, 2008, 05:09:27 PM

Do you have a windows XP CD?
Can you borrow one?I have a Windows XP disc. I remember running some kind of recovery thing after booting to the disc, and it ended up restarting.

If I do end up getting the Recovery console to work and /chkdsk, would I lose any data/files that I had on my computer? No.

Solve : Sorry for the inconvenience screen loop - Windows XP Home?

Answer»

Hi everyone! First, thanks for any and all helpful posts that this may RECEIVE. I truly appreciate it.

Here is what is happening, a few weeks ago I had a virus on my computer, I went to restart to DELETE the final files & that is when it all started. Restart is no longer my friend. I finally decided to reformat completely, deleted everything off the computer and put in the Gateway system recovery disc

I have tried 2 versions of Windows, both XP Home and XP Professional because I was told perhaps my XP Home had CORRUPTED files, however neither of them work.

The computer starts and it runs on a loop on the Sorry for the inconvenience screen, no matter what option I choose (safe mode, safe mode with networking, etc etc) It doesn't work. The computer won't go into safe mode even if I press F8.

I have tried:
FIXMBR
Fixboot
Chkdsk /r (it says there are no bad SECTORS)

None of this works, however if I leave my computer off for a while let's say an hour and I turn it on, it will load to the desktop, stay on, but sometimes in the middle of something it will crash, restarting it will always result in the screen looping, and the only WAY to get it loaded up is to wait for a while before turning it back on.

I was told that it seems to be a windows/software issue so I'm posting it here, however the more this goes on the less I'm sure that's what it is.

It's a Gateway GT5026E.

Sorry if I explained this too much or if I didn't use the proper terminology to explain, I'm nowhere near an expert at any of this. Thanks again for any light you can shed on this! Overheating...and or flakey PSU.

Solve : Computer Non-stop restarting?

Answer»

Before trying the XP CD if you have a spare POWER supply TRY to CHANGE your power supply first and see what will happen.I tried the CD, did not work, same error still popped up.When you say that you tried the cd, do you mean that you booted to it and followed the repar instructions from this page:
http://icrontic.com/articles/repair_windows_xp

Or do you mean that you were unable to boot to the CD?yes i booted it, and followed the repair instructions. im completely lost on where to go now.Your gonna need a real XP CD. It has to be the same version EG... Home Edition, Professional, Media Center etc...then that will for sure fix my comp you think? It's hard to say. This is the main drawback of not being able to actually see your computer. I do what I can, through our correspondence here on the internet. The next logical step would be to use a "real" XP CD. However, your problem may end up being hardware related. The reason I asked if you posted the right stop error earlier is that web gives many DIFFERENT causes for this particular error - service pack 3 being the most popular.

There are a lot more knowledgeable people than me on this forum. Hopefully, one of them will chime in soon.

By the way, did you dust out your computer?Try changing your power supply and see what happens. Also, if you haven't cleaned the inside of your CPU i suggest you clean it now. If i had another power supply laying around id change it, but ill have to save up a little money before i can get another one.

And i have not cleaned out the inside of it yet, ill get some air and clean it out soon.

Thanks for all the help Quote

If i had another power supply laying around id change it, but ill have to save up a little money before i can get another one.

Alternative. Disconnect Remove everything that takes poser but is not needed. CD-rim.Floopy Drive. Spare HDD. External USB anything, even mouse and key board. Start with older, safer PS/2 keyboard. And try and older, safer Video card.
If you box has a power problem, that might revel the problem.Do you have another computer in working condition nearby?
Is this a laptop? Is it a major BRAND name or a custom built?
How old is the computer?
What kind of Video card?
Do you have USB Hubs? Usb printers? USB Flash drives?

Solve : I can't delete files or right click my mouse?

I WANT to delete many old files to free up some hard-disk space but when I click on them my computer freezes up on me and I have to re-boot it. Similarly with the DESKTOP I can't RIGHT click and delete or drag and drop any of the links showing there. I KEEP getting the bloody MESSAGE "Not Responding" which is really aggravating!

Is there something wrong with my mouse, my software, hardware, or me???

When I go to add or remove programs they are listed, but if I click on one to repair, it says it has been removed. I have rebooted and rebooted, I have tried to log in and log out, I cannot log in as guest, nothing seems to help. What can I try. Try this

Solve : Windows does not load in safe mode or normal mode. Need to save work and format.?

Answer»

Hello.

I have reached the conclusion that I need to format my laptop: acer travelmate 2414wlmi.and reinstall windows xp, however I am not sure if this is possible as the os does not load in either normal mode or safe mode.

I picked up a virus a few days ago that redirected me repeatedly to *Blocked Russian URL*, a problem I've seen that others have had. But now that I have access to an external hard drive to save my WORK, windows does not get past the welcome screen in normal mode, and is only usable for about a second in safe mode. Is there anything I can do to save my work?

Any help would be great.
Thanks
Ed Depending on the type of hard drive you have you can use one of these adapters to connect to a friends computer and get your data off. If you do make sure your friend runs a scan on your drive before removing any data.

Good luck!

Alan <><

[attachment deleted by admin]Thanks Alan.
Will those adaptors work when the laptop is either restarting every 30 seconds, or when it is waiting in the f8 or f2 setup menus? Because these are currently the only 2 possible states for it to be in...
Thanks
EdWith those adapters the drive is removed from the laptop and hooked up to a working desktop machine to retrieve your data...
Windows does NOT need to be functioning on the laptop drive to do this.http://www.dtidata.com/resourcecenter/2007/04/23/how-to-slave-hard-drive/
I see. Thank you. Thats very helpful. I will work out out what sort of adaptor I need, and get one ordered.
Thanks.
Ed

This one is actually the CHEAPEST...'bout 8 Bucks...
Laptop 2.5" to IDE adapter.

Good Luck.Or you can try to repair your Operating System. Start your PC from CD and after you see the Windows Setup page chose R (repair) than you are going to see a list of OS's on your PC, if you see the Windows XP with the number 1 press that number and you will need to give the administrator password or if you don't have a password just press Enter and after that just check if OS is corrupted with this command CHKDSK /P, after a while if you see that check disk found one or more error just write the next command CHKDSK/R, this will repair your OS , be patient to wait because this procedure is approximately sustained an hour. After The repair is done just write EXIT and press Enter.
Cheers. If the drive boots then this might be less work...

Solve : ajusting help?

Answer»

I have Win XP Pro and I just GOT a new Monitor and I am ajusting the Size of the Icons and Text and need some help.

I go into the Properties of the Desktop and then go to Apperance.
Then I go into Customize because I like to pick from the Dropdown list things that I want to ajust like Icons and things like that.

One thing I am looking for is how to ajust the size of the Window that come up when you open something.

Like if you click on Start and Shutdown the Window that comes up thats asks what you want to do Restart or Shutdown or Cancel.

This Window how do you make the Window Biger is this what is in the list as Wndow Banner?try this: Right Click Desktop>Properties>Appearence Tab>Effects>Check the box that says, "use large icons". I believe this make windows a little larger....

You might simply try customizing the SCREEN resolution...

Right Click the Desktop>Properties>Settings tab>Use the slider to try different RESOLUTIONS... You could also click on the "advanced" button on the "settings" tab, and depending on your driver, you could play around with the settings even more..

Speaking of drivers, REMEMBER to update the driver for you new monitor...

RightClick "my computer">Properties>Hardware Tab> Device Manager> LOOK for your monitor in the list and click the "+" sign next to it, then right on the driver that is sub-listed and click "update".....see if Windows will find a better driver on the InternetSo Far so good I whent into Display Properties and then Apperance and then Custtomize.

Icons are the Size I want and Text to.

Now in the Dropdown list that says Icons Active Title Bar and so on were is the Option or what will it say for me to click on and ajust the size of say when little windows come up?

You know like when you hit Start Shutdown the Window that comes up that has Re Start cancel Turn Off??

Solve : computer freezes at start up - won't load windows?

Answer»

Hey guys been reading the site for a day trying to find a fix for my problem but I haven’t had any luck so I figured I’d start a thread. Sorry if this question is repetitive. I really appreciate the good info I have found - I read often.

Essentially my computer freezes at start up and won’t even get into windows. It is a gateway desktop from about 3 or 4 years ago (I know that’s overly vague) and is running windows XP.

I recently installed SuperAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, adaware, firefox, and thunderbird … all seemed to be running ok until firefox and thunderbird started freezing. I also recently noticed that Norton 360 wasn’t loading - in fact when I looked for it I couln’t find it on the pc. (this is all right be for it crashed)

Now when I say freezes at startup I mean it’ll get me to the “gateway” screen with the f2 and f10 options and then after that it freezes on a black screen. Otherwise it looks like it starts the initial processes and gives the f11 prompt then freezes on a completely black screen. I have tried to boot into safe mode after tapping the f8 key and it just starts listing about a page of lines like the following and does nothing just sits there with stuff like this on it:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\fltmgr.sys
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\disk.sys
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\sr.sys
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\mup.sys

(these are not the actual ones lines just a very similar ones to give an idea of the kind of lines its showing)

I tried to reset the CMOS (or BIOS?) to factory setting per another fix option I found elsewhere but it didn’t seem to affect anything … may not have done it right though

The kicker to all this is I bought the floor model of the PC that didn’t come with discs so I have no XP discs.

Anyway I am hoping someone may have encountered this before. I do a fair amount of home recording so I am not only concerned about loosing years of recordings but also a variety of recording software that I have surely lost all the codes and discs for (I lost a lot of personal items last year in a move) … Most of my files are saved on an external hard drive so I hope these would these be safe even if the main CPU is toast?
Recovery Console.iso

Click the link above to DLoad The XP Recovery Console...
Use your burning app to make a bootable CD with it.
Put it in the problem machine and power up.
At the Command Prompt type in fixboot and hit Enter...
Remove the CD and re-boot.
If this does not work repeat the steps above but this time type in fixmbr and hit Enter...
Again remove the CD and re-boot.
Let us know...thanks for the help ... I burned a cd with the rc.iso file on it but it didn't have an effect when i started the computer with it in. I may have created the cd wrong - is there a specific way to make a bootable disc. I just put the cd-r in and selected "open writable cd folder" and then dropped the file into the window and selected "write these files to cd" from the file menu. You need to use some .iso burner...

Download, and install free Imgburn: http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download

Just to point out, you don't want to just burn the file to the cd, you want to mount it.

I made that mistake my first time ImgBurn will make the CD bootable. No other action is needed.ok, so I burned it to the cd inserted the cd and it gave me a blue setup menu (I hope I burned it right not sure I remember selecting mounting an image - but since it brought up the setup menu I figured it did) - I selected 'r' (repair) ... and then it asks which installation I want to log onto ... I entered "1" because above that it lists 1: I:MiniNT

I did it once and typed fixboot in the prompt and the second time I typed fixmbr

after each start up I got the following after the pci device listing:

verifying dmi pool data ..........
Boot From CD :

NTLDR is missing
Press any key to restart

... when I press the key I get the following message:

NVIDIA Boot AGENT 220.0518

Copyright (c) 1997-2000 Intel Corporation
PXE-E61: MEDIA test FAILURE, check cable
PXE-M0F: Exiting NVIDIA Boot Agent
Disk Boot Failure Insert system Disk and Press Enter

thanks everyone for the help so far ... any thoughtsOkay, boot to the CD again. Type in 1 again to get to your windows installation and enter your password (if you have one).

We want to get to the root directory of your C drive here so type in: cd\ and press enter. You should now just see a standard C prompt.

At that prompt, type in these commands. These commands assume that your CD drive's letter is E if it not substitute your drives letter.

copy e:\i386\ntldr c:\
copy e:\i386\ntdetect.com c:\
I tried copying the files but it indicates they can't be located - here is what it reads:

I:\>cd i386

I:\i386>copy ntldr c:
the system cannot find the file specified
You may need to borrow an XP CD to complete this then if the RC doesn't do the trick...
The version must match: XP Pro = XP Pro or XP Home = XP Home
The service packs installed must also match.any guess on where to find one ... or how to find out what version I have (my computer didn't come with anything)?

COULD I just buy an XP CD and use it?

Since I an in the market for a new computer anyway is there a way to import all my stuff off the old one - if so will the problems come with it? sorry for the bump ...

Just wanted to see if I could I just buy an XP CD and use it? Having trouble tracking down the specific gateway version.
No need to buy one...just boorow a Windows CD of the same version and service packs you have installed...it does not need to be a Gateway CD Microsoft would be the best choice...

What? It was there a few hours ago....what the heck happened? Norton goes to remove the trojans, the computer restarts and the OS is gone?

Help! LOL.....thanks for everyone's efforts! This topic has been moved to the Microsoft Windows forum.

At this point this is a computer issue and not a malware issue. You will get better replies in this forum then I can give you in the malware forum.thanks a bunch! So in the Repair Install procedure are you saying that it does not show a C:Windows install at all ? ?
This is not a good sign.

Try this .hal.dll repair first,Here

If this does not get you back into Windows then you're XP install is seriously corrupted.
To try and rescue any data See Here

Did you make the wrong choice by accident when running the Repair Install ? ?
If so the data MAY be gone....let us know.Hi..No, no reinstall what so ever, Ive done reinstalls before, so I know this is not the case.

Simply let Norton fix those trojans, rebooted and that prompt came up. I will try your suggestions and let you know what happens....thanks so much for your help! The woman who owns this computer stated she kept getting popups on her p/c stating that she
has trojans on her computer and does she want to fix them..so she kept saying yes and I think the devil
was unleashed....she had at least 3 vundos that Norton found....and her startup programs had about 20 foreign names.....Most of them not legit and it appears this computer is saturated with malware....Quote from: computerchic on April 30, 2009, 07:22:58 PM

and her startup programs had about 20 foreign names.....Most of them not legit....

hal.dll is infectable by Virut. If Norton REMOVED hal.dll and other critical files because of them being infected with Virut that could explain what happened. That's only speculation. hal.dll is a protected file and Norton should be programed to repair it instead of removing it. But Virut is a nasty bit of malware so who knows.Hi....thanks for everyone's help....I'll figure something out, hopefully...seems her hard drive crashed.

Is there a way to upload a hal.dll file at this point? I tried to download the hal.dll file onto my computer, which
is fine, then when I click to open, so I can save it to download, I get a prompt stating windows cant find a program to open it....I really dont want to open the dll file, just want to save it so I can somehow get it onto the
corrupt p/c.

I have a memory stick, but dont think I can boot anything from that at this point.

Also, some of the files LISTED on the startup list were

system 32/golewiri.dll
/nehafote.dll
hodisuto.dll

and more.....

Thanks

Is there anything I can do from the Bios? This works fine, can get to options
on F8, but selecting ANY of them brings me back to the dreaded corrupt prompt......

If you have another computer sitting around, pull the hard drive out and run a scan on it from the other computer. I would use AVG and NOD 32 for the scan.Quote

Solve : Broadband and Wizard Fast Access problem?

Answer»

Recently I TRIED to install an AT&T broadband disc into my Windows XP. Windows advised me that the service I was trying to install was not compatible. I removed the disc. Now every time I boot up, I get a message from Wizard Fast Acess asking me to install the disc. What I would like to do is to get rid of the message itself. Can anyone TELL me how? Thanx. I'm from England so I may be talking a load of s**t but can you uninstall any programmes already installed from them in your control panel? Or re-install your browser. i'm no expert though my friend just trying to help.....Quote

AT&T broadband disc
I took all that stuff off.
You need to complain to the tAT&T support people.
They have an 800 number, but you have to wait in a long line. Thanx to you both for your help and information. Mulreay: My control panel does not show any Wizard programs (or anything from AT&T for that matter). Geek-9pm: I well know how long AT&T makes you wait. I WENT there when I cancelled the broadband service. I'll take a couple doses of patience (better known as vodka) and GIVE it a try. Thanx again.

Solve : "Squid proxy-caching web server" box pops up, asks me to log in when surfing?

Answer»

Hi all

We have just relocated, and have gone (sadly) from ADSL2+ to ADSL1. Nothing else has changed, but I am suddenly having issues when using proxies, that this window will pop up "Squid proxy-caching web SERVER" and asks me for a login and password.

It does not happen for all sites, just a small handful. I have tried my internet pass etc and that does not work. Two weeks ago, before the MOVE, the sites that are now giving me a problem were working no problemo.

I am using WinXP SP3, IE 6.0. Any ideas what this might be? There are SCANT REFERENCES to this problem around the web but nothing concrete on how to fix the issue...(and some very interesting suggestions - I have not signed up for this server and I have not recieved a pass or login) I hope posting this in 'Windows' forum is Ok, I wasn't sure if it was an IE problem or just a windows problem.

Thanks! :-)

Solve : Installed new hard drive and now I can't sign-in to a few sites?

Answer»

I need help with one of my Dell computers. I have a Inspiron 530, service tag: bj24rd1, running windows XP with a IE6 browser.

The hard drive crashed and I replaced it. I used the reinstall disks that came with the computer.

When I try to sign-in on Ebay, it will not accept my NAME and PASSWORD. I can sign-in to PayPal and they use the same system. They use Extended Validation Secure Sockets Layer (EV SSL) technology.

I feel I need to download a driver, but I have no clue as to which one(s). I have no problems signing in using my other computers. I was able to sign-in with the Inspiron 530 before I replaced the hard drive.

Could you please recommend the driver I need to download, or suggest what other problem I might have?

Thank you, Bill
Not a driver issue...contact eBay.I have contacted Ebay and they send a form LETTER. I can sign-in on other computers but not the one with the new hard drive.Check your internet setting. Open IE 6 go to and select Tools> internet option>ADVANCE>select default setting, scroll down to TLS 1. Make sure this box is check. U might have to close IE 6 and reopen it. Write back and let us know.Thank you, but I still can't sign-in.
You have to go back to advanced settings and make sure all SSL is enabled , its right above TLSGo to the other computer and copy down all setting or a print screen and compare them to the PC that can not LOGIN. Let us know?
