Solve : Disabling WBEM?

Answer»

I have a standalone Windows XP SP 2 configured with 2 HDs (giving about .5 Tbytes of storage) and 1GB of RAM. Drive partitions are normally labeled C through L (different programs and topics for different drives). It is fully patched and auto update is on, and Windows Defender also auto updates. There is anti virus software which is also updated daily. Office 2007 is also on the machine. Connection to the Internet is via dial up modem with one of several ISPs (sometimes one or another will have a tech problem, so I find having choices when trying to connect to be good). I use Port Explorer to keep track of what is happening on different ports when on line, and Process Guard to control which process runs when. Now to the question..

Several days ago after a reboot when it wanted to start this time I told Windows Based Enterprise System (i.e., WBEM) no. After repeated queries I told Process Guard to remember my answer and now WBEM doesn't try anymore. As stated that was several days ago. The machine seems to continue to behave normally without WBEM. MS Windows Defender still auto updates and so do the other programs. I am still able to defrag and perform other operations with no difficulty. The firewall still seems to be operational. NISTIME can still access the time.

I find a lot of techno gobblegook but not much REAL usable info about WBEM. My summation seems to be a business product that doesn't do much for an at home USER with a single machine. I also note that when it ran, it occasionally used a lot of CPU power (and a service host accessed MS and Akami web sites a lot at odd moments but now no longer do once auto updates finish their tasks).

So anyway, what is WBEM good for from the perspective of a non-LAN machine, and what are the downsides to keeping it off?

I've never heard of a Win XP component called Windows Based Enterprise System, actually I'm fairly certain it isn't something that ships with XP.
When you Google WBEM you get most hits on it being short for Web-Based Enterprise Management.
Microsoft do have an implementation of Web-Based Enterprise Management called WMI that is present in all versions of windows since win 2000. Is it WMI you've blocked?Yup. Going on a week now. Actually according to MS WBEM is merely one component of XPs WMI. My WMI is operating. However, the description of exactly what the WBEM is, why it is needed and how it does it is vague. I am growing INCREASINGLY suspicious of the WBEM falling into the gray zone of the borderline of Spyware. I have experimentally blocked many different DLLs over the years, and normally if I have erred the computer lets me know RIGHT away (i.e., reboots in a loop, can't find C:, firewall won't turn on, modem won't dial, etc.). However with the WBEM dropped the only noticeable effect is less CPU power being utilized (MS Process Explorer tracks that for me), and much fewer connects to MS and Akami. I do know (from an old Lavasoft email) that there was a big industry debate a few years ago as to what was and what was exempt from being labeled Spyware. Enterprise is a word with many definitions. Given that its absence seems to be totally unimportant for my enterprise of running my machine, but the machine establishes connections to Akami and MS when it is on, I can not help but wonder if it's real purpose is to help the business enterprise of the owners of the Windows name (i.e., MS). Now I could be 1,000% wrong as the poorly written techie spiel on the MS website also implies the purpose of WBEM is to enable the machine to better connect to remote components. Now why and how contacting MS or Akami becomes an essential part of that process isn't even mentioned, much less explained. Further it is possible that allowing WBEM to run as part of the WMI does not in and of itself result in the calls to MS and Akami, but that rather a third not yet noticed process is then called when it detects WBEM is running. This last possibility is what inspires my query as to what is known about WBEM and what is it good for?

Solve : Looking For Urgent Help (C://Windows/System32/shutdown -s)?

Answer»

message detail So as a joke a friend of mine entered that
(C://WINDOWS/SYSTEM32/SHUTDOWN -s)
in a notepad, as a .bat
and used it as the target for my firefox shortcut.

Now it wont start. Ive deleted the file, the shortcut, and emptied my bin, however, the computer still will not boot out side of SAFE MODE.

any solution, is it SOMEWHERE as an INF?

What happens is after the OS(the windows loading screen before you put in your password) finishes loading, the screen turns blank, and I highly doubt it is a graphics problem. Thanks for your help.I *think* that's a command to shut down Windows. He was targeting Firefox?

I couldn't find information on the -s switch at the end of the command, but there's still a lot of places left to look.

Maybe your "friend" isn't as funny as he thinks he is. Of course, I'm sure he'll have this fixed up in no time for you.I know the command. -s means system, versus -l (logs you out).

He didnt target firefox, he just used the shortcut so that USING the "firefox" shortcut shut the computer down. Also, he said that the file must have put itself somewhere else as weve already deleted the file and shortcut. As to were, we have no idea.

Also, im using a custom built computer, using windows XP.what service pack level?Windows XP Version 5.1
Service Pack: 2

Quoted ; Dcan you get into your computer at all?Through safe mode, yes.
However it wont start in debug, most recent successful settings, and restoring does nothing, making me believe the file is in the computers system folder somewhere else (maybe the script/batch copied itself?)

If you can tell I know minimal about computers. I can put one together, but I don't know
much about programmingSo have you tried searching for the file in your system using the search facility?

Otherwise try a system restore to a point prior to your friend's visit....

GOOD luck In safe mode do a search for *.bat and scrutinise the results and their respective locations...be careful not to delete anything important.

Then inform your "friend" if he goes near your machine again he'll recieve an attitude adjustment.no luck... the file is COMPLETELY goneIn safemode GO to Start/Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter.
Have your XP CD handy as it will ask for it.
Let it finish and re-boot.

If this produces no joy-joy you are probably looking at having to do a repair install.
Post back with the results. While im trying this, does anyone know what caused it?Your friend.Very funny... So I have a lead.

SHUTDOWN.EXE-12DAD820.pf

at first I thought it was a system file, but when I google it it comes up as a virus. Advice?

Solve : inaccessible_boot_device - how to fix besides re-install?

Answer»

Finally got one that is not so minor. Have an optiplex gx260 running Windows 2000 with 256mb ram. I installed another 512mb ram and when it was REBOOTED it said that the amount of memory had changed. Went into the bios and confirmed the amount as 768mb. Saved and exited, the various Windows screen go by and then the inaccessible boot device screen came up. I figured the ram was bad so I switched it out with a 128mb chip. Same sequence, same result. Took out the 128mb and left the 256mb and rebooted. Same sequence, same result.

I booted up with a Win98 floppy and went to fdisk. It looks like somehow the C: drive no longer exists as such. The screen shows partition 1, with 71mb and partition 2, with 19gb and active.

I ran chkdsk c: /f but it did not work as it did not see a "c" drive.

Now here is the kicker. The bios has a password, I can go into it and hit enter whereupon it says INCORRECT password and allows me to look at the settings but not change any. I don't know the password, I called the DOE help desk and they had no idea. The boot order is floppy, hard drive, cd and that can not be changed because of the password issue.

I have the Windows 2000 start up floppies and cd but they are not the same version that is on the computer.

The answer from the help desk is to install the hard drive externally and save the data, then they COME in and re-image.

How do I fix this without removing the drive? Can it be fixed?I have a good news and bad news. Every desktop computer motherboard has a backdoor to the BIOS -that's the good news. open the side panel and look for a jumper that says anything in regards to BIOS.....usually jumpers are set for configuration position, if you remove them or change the positioning on it, then it will clear the BIOS password and will allow you to get in (you have to clear put it in the same position after you made your changes.

Bad news is that, you MAY have done more damage then good by running the checkdsk C: /f , Windows 98 boot disk or CD and fdisk will not show you the real size of the drive unless your drive is less then 98 gig and it's in FAT32 format.

If your drive is actually FAT32, boot from the disk and on the prompt type in fdisk /mbr (I have seen this work in may instances)

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Fdisk showed the size of the drive correctly, 20GB formatted as NTFS. I will try the jumpers. I have done that before but I guess I am getting old since it just did not occur to me in this case.

Will fdisk /mbr work since it is not FAT32?It might work but I know it will not make it worst.

Solve : Disabling BIOS shadowing and caching?

Answer»

Hey guys,

So every so often (actually, more than 3 times a day) I get hit with the blue screen of death. Each time, it says that my computer is being shut down to prevent damage, and each time, it recommends that I DISABLE shadowing and caching on my BIOS. (I have an ASUS A8N-SLI SE mobo.) I access my BIOS, but I don't see an option to enable/disable caching and/or shadowing. Maybe I'm not looking hard enough, or it's under a different name other than "caching" or "shadowing", or my mobo doesn't have the option of enabling/disabling caching and/or shadowing. Any help is greatly appreciatedTo enable or disable the Bios caching in the Bios, go to Advanced Bios and about the fifth or sixth line down is exactly that- use the + or - signs to CHANGE from enable/disable.

However, I am in a similar position, and on disabling the cahing feature, my computer refused to boot up, and I re-enabled the Bios caching. Have not yet found the solution.
Anyway, I need to look further for the shadowing feature, no doubt it is there in the Bios somewhere. Each board will be different, refer to the board's manual.
Some may not have options to enable/disable it.
What's the exact error message you're getting? What RAM are you using?

I have the same mobo and was using RAM that was in spec but not approved list in the manual. I SWITCHED to the approved stuff and magic ! The blue screens went away!

And be forewarned that disabling those features in the BIOS may render the machine un-bootable...

Solve : Help with Microphone?

Answer»

Hi,
I have a COUPLE of questions. I just downloaded Skype and it isn't working because my microphone is muted. I have tried many ways to unmute it but it doesn't seem to work. The balances slider about my microphone volume is DISABLED and won't let me move it. I have a HP Pavilion zv6000 with Microsoft Windows XP purchased in 2005.

Does my computer have an internal microphone?
Suggestions on getting it to operate.
Is it possible for the microphone to be physically damaged?
Is there any download that can reset the default sound and audio settings?
Should I purchase a separate microphone if the internal one doesn't work?

Any HELP would be greatly APPRECIATED. I have contacted HP several times and they haven't been any help so far.

*Also, on Mixer Device it says : Conexant AMC Audio?

Thank you.

Solve : Display gone weird?

Answer»

Hi, i am a first time user and hope i can get some help with my display problem. I have windows xp sp3, video adaptor nvidia geforce4 mx440. This problem started some time ago but only happens occasionally, lately it has been happening just about regularly when i turn on the COMPUTER. The colors go weird, showing weird patterns while booting up and when finally on my desktop, the colors are not complete e.g. a lot of red or pink shadows and lines with pink or incomplete pictures with lines, etc. (hard to explain). Usually i turn off and turn on again and the problem disappears, sometimes have to reboot twice before it becomes normal again. Other times when it seems normal, things will move really slow, like when scrolling down a screen, it takes a few seconds before it will actually happen and weird behaviour like any action taking a long time to complete. Suspect display problem or maybe hard drive dying or ram dying, or something else. Also I don't know if related to display problem, but sometimes there is a lot of clicking sounds coming from my tower, this has been going on since a year now, but it doesn't happen all the time, sometimes doesn't happen in weeks. Don't know if it is the hard disk, or power related or what. Totally confused. Other than that, there has been nothing changed in hardware or software as far as I can tell to warrant this weird behaviour. Any ideas anyone?Right now...you should be concentrating on backing up any important documents and files...just in case we run across the worst case scenario...which would be a total system failure.

So...if you're able to back anything up...do so now...while you still have the opportunity.

If you're hearing a weird clicking noise from your computer...it could be several things...a fan making some noise or a hard drive problem.

How OLD is your computer? Who's the manufacturer...and what model is it? Have you tried using a different monitor to see if you're experiencing the same display issues?

As far as it taking a long time to scroll up or down...and other weird things happening...it could be CAUSED by the hard drive...missing and/or corrupt files, etc.

Again...I'd suggest a backup of your important files...if you can, before we start any repair procedures.

BTW...does the same thing happen if you boot into Safe Mode?your video card could be on its last legs...

Take the cover off your computer, and use compressed air to clean it out. Make sure no fans are clogged with dirt. NEXT leave the cover off and power on your computer, try and determine where the clicking noise is coming from.I am waiting on the answer to... "BTW...does the same thing happen if you boot into Safe Mode"?

'SteveJohnson1958' did a good evaluation there.

You are a smart man Saviour.Hi again, sorry for late reply, busy busy, only now can i sit down. thanks all of you for the great suggestions.
Yes, i will try to back up (i currently have running the Nero backitup thing, is that good enough? it backsup into drive d which is another hard disk on my computer.)
Unfortunately because both the display problem and clicking noise problem is coming and going, the last two boots have been fine, and yes i tried booting into safe mode and that was fine too. i guess it means that something is on its way out, but what, i would say maybe 5 out of 5 times i start up my computer, it may occur, which makes it hard because if i turn off to restart in safe mode, it may be one of those times it will be okay anyway.
No, haven't tried a different monitor. I THINK the computer is about 5 years old, bought from Austin Computers who assembles them, has Intel Pentium 4 CPU 2.8ghz with 1.5gb ram and Intel mainboard 865 perll, i think it has a dual processor.
i am a bit of a dummy, which brings me to my next question: what is and how do you get compressed air again, that clicking sound is as elusive as a pimple on a baby's bottom? but soon as possibly possible i will try to find it with the hood off.You can get compressed air in a can at most office supply stores.I'm sorry, I can't resist... the title of this thread inspired me to make this one...

Solve : Excel Question?

Answer»

I have having a total memory loss. I have an Excel data base which consists of thousands of phone numbers ( in XXX-XXX-XXXX format) that I need to add a 1- in front of each in order for a fax dialer to be able to recognize and then properly dial. I have done it before, however I am at a complete loss to remember the formula or procedure to do so. I know there is an easier way than doing it manually. Thanks in advance for suggestions. - D. Moore - Denver, CO. I think more info would be helpful. I've never seen any fax command in Excel. Exactly how do you use Excel to dial these fax numbers? Can the number format be 1-XXXXXXXXX, instead of 1-XXX-XXX-XXXX, or just 1XXXXXXXXXX? You are correct on the XXXXXXXXXX format. I am helping a friend (not on this machine) and forgot about the lack of hyphens. Does that help? Just need a 1XXXXXXXXXX format established. Thanks again for taking the time to help. Regards - DaveDave...

I'm using Excel 2000, I don't know what you're using...

If your phone number cells are currently displayed as 555-555-5555, then you can change the formatting of the cells by doing this...test it in only one cell first.

1. Let's say you have a cell with the following content: 5555555555
2. To format this cell to a phone number, you'd simply click on that cell, select Format/Cells.../Number Tab/Special/Phone Number/OK
3. The cell will display 5555555555 as (555) 555-5555
4. You want it to display as 1-555-555-5555...correct?
5. Click on that cell, select Format/Cells.../Number Tab/Custom/
6. To the right you will see a box where you can scroll down to see a formula that looks like this: [<=9999999]###-####;(###) ###-####
7. Once selected...you will see that formula in the Type: box.
8. Change the formula in the Type: box to this: [<=9999999]###-####;1-###-###-####
9. Click OK.
10. The number should now be displayed as 1-555-555-5555.

Hopefully this is what you want.

You can now format a group of cells to reflect that change by using the following:

1. Select the group of cells...
2. Click Format/Cells.../Number Tab/Custom
3. Scroll down to the new formula you have already created...select it...click the OK button.
4. The group of cells will be changed to the new phone number format.

Let us know if this is what you want...Quote

8. Change the formula in the Type: box to this: [<=9999999]###-####;1-###-###-####
I had looked at that, too, but I was not sure it would serve his PURPOSE since the prefix, 1, is not actually part of the cell contents, as seen in the formula bar when the cell is selected. So, even though the special format makes the cell display 1-###-##-###, or 1#########, the actual content is ###-##-### or #########, depending on the exact formatting.

That's why I asked how he used Excel in connection with the fax numbers.Quote from: soybean on June 03, 2008, 07:30:35 PM

This is actually a good point...since it doesn't change the cell contents. However...in his first post he is referring to the number as "format" and "formula"...so I'm assuming his fax program will be able to determine the number based on the cell formatting. Let's hope this is the case.I do believe you guys straightened me out (it appears as such from what I have read), maybe. My friend is running XT if that makes any difference from the original directions above. Please let me know if that would make any sort of difference. Do you mean he is running Windows XP?

Also, I'm still wondering how phone numbers in an Excel file are used for FAXING. Does your friend have special software installed that reads the phone numbers in the Excel file and then sends a fax via the computer? No regular fax machine involved here, right? My Typo earlier. XP is correct and I will head over there now for more info. Give me TEN and I will have him present also. Thanks again!!!!!! - DaveJust to clarify... excel is not a database application... Solve : trying to open a text document but only opens in wordpad and i need it in works!?

Answer»

Hi there

I wonder if anyone can tell me how i can change the setting on my computer so as when i open text documents they automatically open up in works rather than in wordpad as when they open in wordpad the text document is all distorted!

When i click to open any document (im trying to download an application form) it only gives me the option to open, cancel or save and if i open or save it opens/saves as a word doc and is all distorted.

Please help!
Thanks Sammie )What operating System is this?

Try right clicking on the .doc file, go to Properties and where it says 'Opens With', click Change and choose Microsoft Word.Hi there

Sorry its Windows XP Home edition.

The application form is on a website, when i right click the link to the application form i get a menu appear and when i click on properties i just get info about the doc, LIKE Protocol, Type and Address. There is no options to change where it opens with

Is there not a setting on my computer so as i can set it to open all documents with works rather than word??

Thanks again
Sammie
You should be able to save the form on the computer and then change it to open with Works, thus making the browser open it as works.

Got the Operating System but what browser are you using?Hi

Im using Internet Explorer - is that what you mean by browser?

Thanks
SammieQuote

is that what you mean by browser?
Yes, Internet Browser.

From my experience with IE, I just have to change the file association on the computer and then it will open in the chosen program.

Have you TRIED what I suggested?Hi there

Yes i have tried that and i can save the file and then i track it down on my computer and can open it with works but even tho its now readable the boxes where i am to write my info on the application form are still somewhat out of sync - i have tried to make their font smaller but its still missing some info - any ideas?

Thanks for your help so far I'm no expert on Works but I know that sometime when you try to download something of the internet, it doesn't alway work (unless you've seen someone do this with this same form).
For example, if you try to download flash games off a website, the GAME might not work.

If that made any SENSE...

Hopefully someone will come along shortly with a definite answer. Please post a link to web site in question, and tell us what exactly you're trying to download.Hi there, from what I can gather is that you are trying to open a wordpad doc with a works doc programme, and that you are using xp as your os.

If this is so, the first response is quite correct, right click, open with, and tick the box marked 'open all docs of this type in the future' for future automation.

I hear that you do not have this option appear when you right click the wordpad file. Even if you did you could expect some diffenernces in the layout, as we are talking different programmes.

Have you tried opening microsoft works word, and then clicking file, open, and navigating to your wordpad file, SELECTING that and opening... ?

Give it a go.....

or try this link for a how too...http://www.umsl.edu/technology/instructionalcomputing/docs/Works%20to%20Word%20Conversion.pdf

Solve : How to change resolution?

when i start up my computer is goes through windows then the screen goes black and says ''Cannot Display this videomode Optimum resolution 1280x 1024 60Gz i have a GForce 8800 GTBoot into Safe Mode by pressing the F8 key on your keyboard before Windows splash screen.

Once into Safe Mode...go to ControlPanel/Display/Settings Tab

Change the resolution to a lower number...try...1024x768 to see if this fixes the problem.I cant seem to get into the safe mode once the system boots up it goes to the gigabyte screen then the windows loading screen then the screen goes blue and it says setup restarting then it goes black. I made this computer and had it working before i reinstalled windows its just STARTED happening now.Try this to start in safe mode:

# Restart your computer.
# When the machine first starts again it will generally list some equipment that is installed in your machine, amount of memory, HARD drives installed etc. At this point you should gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a Windows XP Advanced Options menu.
# Select the option for Safe Mode using the ARROW keys.
# Then press enter on your keyboard to boot into Safe Mode. That DIDNT work either i dont even have the option of a save mode all i have is the dios menu could i do it from there? I dont get why it worked before but when i reinstalled windows and it rebooted then it just started happening i think i have to config the mother board again if that makes any sense.Had you mentioned you had re-installed Windows that would have saved some time and effort...
After any re-INSTALL of an OS the existing drivers are wiped out...
Re-install both your MBoard drivers and the video drivers and report back with the results...

P.S. The motherboard drivers should go first...Oh sorry about that, i cant get to any kind of desktop screen i dont know any other way to install a driver the only thing i can go to is the Dios screen

Hi, today my COMPUTER started randomly SIGNING off of whatever XP user it was on, and going back to the home screen page. It would GO to sleep, then wake up and log off onto the Windows XP home page thing. It has done this two times, and only happens when I LET it sit and go to sleep.

How do I stop it from doing this?Check these settings:

Go to Start/Control Panel/Power Options/Advanced Tab

Make sure "Prompt for password when computer resumes from standby" is NOT TICKED.

Solve : Help And Support, Not Working?

Answer»

Hello everyone,
Im having trouble opening Windows XP Help And Support. When i PRESS start then Help And Support i get the following error message " Could not start the Help and Support service on Local Computer. Error 126: The specified module could not be found. This happened on both of my PCs. i checked, Services the start up type is Automatic and the Patch to executable is C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs
I went to REGEDIT, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\microsoft\ but i can not find current version, app paths and Helpctr.exe ? I have been using two Registry cleaner tools called Smart Pc and CCleaner, i dont know if thats the cause of this. Any ideas, will be helpful, Thank you.Do you have SP2?

As far as I know, CCleaner doesn't make any changes to Help And Support. I can't speak for Smart PC, however, because I don't use it. Easy Cleaner is known for doing this, so it's possible.

You could try adding the following Kelly's Korner registry keys to your registry...
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/helpsvc.reg
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/helpsvcrestore.reg

To verify that it's running, go to Start > Run and type in services.msc and scroll down to Help and Services. Make sure it's set to Automatic and Started. (If it's grayed-out or not listed, try this and this.)

If that doesn't work, you can reinstall it by going to C:\Windows\inf and right-clicking on pchealth.inf and choosing Install. You will need your Windows CD for this.

Let us know how it works out for you.Yes it's a SP2. Nothing is working stubborn PC !
Im going to have to re- install it from the cd. Any tips ?You can try going to Start > Run and typing in sfc /scannow (note the space), which will also ask for your Windows CD.

However, I would first try the reinstallation method from my previous post. Just go to the C:\Windows\inf folder (you may need to view hidden files and folders) and choose to install pchealth.inf (it looks like a Notepad file with an orange cog). It will then ask for the appropriate CD.Ok, I finally found Pchealth, right clicked, gave me option to install. If i put the Cd in wouldnt that load the OS and format the drive ? Oh no, don't worry. Inserting the Windows CD won't do anything you don't want it to do. Many of our instructions involve using the Windows CD and nobody has had any PROBLEMS yet. You'll be just fine.Sorry to be a pain, I put the Home XP CD in the D: drive when i press ok " File not found Please vertify the correct file name given " comes up ?This might be a stretch, but let's try this...

I have attached a zip file. Inside of it is a batch file. Extract the batch file to your desktop.

End these running processes if you have them: helpsvc.exe, helphost.exe, helpctr.exe

Delete the cab files (if they exist) in C:\WINDOWS\pchealth\helpctr\PackageStore

Then run the batch file (double-click on it). When it is complete, which may take a couple of minutes, the window will automatically close. See if Help And Support will work after that.If that doesn't succeed, another registry edit to try is...
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/helpandsupportmissing.reg

Just be sure to back up your registry first.

There are several methods of reinstalling Help And Support...it's just a matter of finding ONE that will work for you. The Windows CD would probably be the best option, but it sounds like you don't have the correct CD needed. You may need to contact the computer's manufacturer about getting a proper copy.I cant find the Zip file ?Odd, I could've sworn I attached it. I must've forgotten. Sorry about that! It's attached to this post, I promise. Ha.

[CLEANING up - attachment deleted by admin]Got it thanks, give in it a go .Hey, Chris i finally got the Help and Support working again. I managed to install it from my Windows Cd, like you told me too. And it WORKED. Thank you for helping me out.Awesome, I'm GLAD you managed to get it to work!

Solve : files to restore customized settings in Outlook?

Answer»

I'm running Windows XP Home and Internet Explorer browser. My question is - can i somehow restore my customized MS Outlook (2002) settings/profiles etc after having STUPIDLY restoring the default settings last night. i now have no email anything (program/profile/emails/contacts etc) after restoring all Office stuff to default. I didint have system restore on but did do a backup of my entire C drive a week prior if that is any help. I did start to try to restore from my backup drive but not really sure which files to restore Outlook from Windows backup (which is new and was an add in form the original disc) and i think it has lost track of all my preferences? the reason i did any of this was that when (for whatever reason), in Outlook an error occured and i was directed to use the "repair inbox tool", which i couldnt find (so used help in Outlook, then restore and repair or something and then eventually ticked both options a) to repair Office errors and then b) to restore default settings)sstuuupidly. i had also been trying to open an excel file previous to this, when a wizard STARTED trying to load something from XP Professional Frontpage (I have XP Home). I cant exactly remember the ORDER this all went in and may have used some incorrect WORDING but i HOPE this makes sense to someone. Please excuse my lack of knowledge - I AM A ROOKIE! I would be very grateful for any help you can give me. cheers

Solve : XP Professional- What is on OEM Disk? / RESOLVED?

Answer»

The OEM VERSION is cheaper than Retail version.

The OEM version is from a computer company right?
Does the OEM version have all the UNNECESSARY programs like AOL, Napster, Realplayer, Quicktime
and others?
Will it say on the disk what company it's from?

Thanks.OEM is made just for that computer build i think.. retail can be used on any computer.21407 ...... Let me attempt to explain.......

OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer.

In the case of XP Pro , ......It is produced by MicroSoft.

It only contains ..... The Windows XP Pro operating system.

The Retail and OEM versions are the same , the DIFFERANCE being, the license fee that is paid. Further, the OEM version doesn't include telephone
support at no cost.

I trust this helps .

dl65 And Microsoft will not give you support at all (not really needed) but refer you to the OEM who sold it to you. Also, that copy of Windows will be bound to that machine. It cannot be used on ANOTHER machine, unlike the retail product. That clears it up. Thanks.Come back ANYTIME.

Solve : Reboot & select proper boot device error?

Answer»

I bought a new hard drive and then tried to install windows xp. For some reason, when i turn on my pc, this error appears: "Reboot & select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and PRESS a key"

I wen't in my bios and changed my primary and secondary boot device to my cdrom and hardrive and still nothing. Ive plugged out one of my cd drives hoping it would detect my other one and still nothing. In the bios, it recongnizes the new hard drive, and both cd drives but when i put the cd in for the windows xp, nothing happens.

I have a hp pavillion, with intel pentium 4 processor, new hard drive is 500gb sata.Ok at the very beginning of the set-up .... you can actually CHOOSE the correct device ....aka your hard drive if your press f2 (Thats what i have to use....... and then it will say loading status ok then it will load a small blue screen in the center of your screen choose boot from your HD aka the one you want to boot from .......... this is all i can think of at present , have you tried switch the HDS around in the actual computer yourself or have you even consdered not using that HD for the OS and use your os on one of the other HDS.....i have 2 HDS i booted x-p on one and left the other one without the x-p os.....runs fine....ive tired that and still doesn't work. As for using another hd, the one that came with the computer is really screwd up so i bought another one, and now this one can't seem to work.ok ok im thinking ... did you reformat it CORRECTLY and did you choose the correct options in the windows bios ....aka slow format.......im shooting ideas at you here i recently upgraded my HD.....I had the same MESSAGE, after I had instaled a new dvd drive I had hooked up to the same connection I had my old one in. after trying many thing in the bios, all it took was to change the connection to the power supply.. just try a DIFFRENT plug on your power supply see if it also works for you.. after this it worked for me..

Solve : Problem with display.?

Answer»

I have a lenovo T60p ThinkPad and for some reason after putting my computer on stand- by yesterday when I CAME back to use it the display on the screen got cut short on the ends and I have no idea how to fix it. INSTEAD of the display taking up the whole screen it stops about two inches short on the sides and the rest is just black. I didn't change the display settings as far as I can remember and like I said all I did was put it on stand-by. I'll try taking a screen shot if I can figure out how. Any help is appreciated.

I have Windows XP SP 2.

Edit - I TIRED taking a screenshot but it only takes it of the SPACE the display takes up. I hope the way I explained my problem is understandable sorry I can't show an image of it. REBOOT into Safe Mode / go into Device Manager & remove the drivers for the monitor and video card / reboot. Windows should reinstall them for you correctly but have your CD handy...just in case. As always, back up your stuff first.

Solve : Laptop Keeps freezing on blue screen during start up?

Answer»

It STARTED happening a few months ago. I turn on my laptop and it will go to the windows loading screen then go to a black screen which i am able to see my CURSER and move it AROUND. After about 30 seconds it will bring me to the blue screen but I am not able to CHOOSE a name to log in. I either get a windows xp logo or i get a welcome message. If i get the logo it wont go into windows and it forces me to turn it off and back on again. If i get the welcome message it will bring me into windows but sometimes will even freeze then. Also the only way I can get my laptop off is by the power button. It won't work if i go to start menu and shutdown, or it wont even restart. I have windows xp home edition.

Any help on what may be doing this and what can be done to fix it I would appreciate. I've got Norton internet security 2008 and spy sweeper and both have come up with nothing.

ThanksI have HP Pavilion dv2037. It has the SP 2. 1 GB of RAM. 100 GB hard drive.Quote "After about 30 seconds it will bring me to the blue screen "

Like i said in my 1st post. There will be 2 different outcomes to the blue screen. Either it shows the Windows xp logo and just sits there forcing me to turn it off and back on. Or it will say welcome and bring me to windows. I can't remember what if any new hardware or programs i installed before I started having this problem because it has been happening for a few months. Basically the blue screen I get is the same as the login for windows XP. Except it wont bring me to log in to my accounts.A couple of options here...

1. Do a system restore (from system tools) to a prior date...not really feasible because this has been going on for a few months
2. Do a system restore with the XP cd...the real one

Can you boot into Safe Mode at all?

Alan <>< My system restore will only let me go back like a month ago i don't know why but that won't do much help for me. I also can't find my windows XP cd.

Safe mode does work and the startup for safe mode is exactly how the real startup should be. It brings me to the login part where i can choose administrator or another profile.

Still I would like to get the regular windows to startup like it does in safemode.Quote from: PosterGrampa on January 06, 2008, 11:46:04 AM

Solve : Weird occurance?

Answer»

2 weeks ago I experinced a problem with my pc where everything starts up fine except the windows xp takes a little longer to open. Then when it opens all I can see is the desktop background. I don't have the money to buy a new OS disc to reboot, but I got another pc from my parents for christmas. It uses the same windows xp that my other pc uses. LAST night my wife was USING the pc and walked away to give our little girl a bath and she came back and the only THING on the screen was the desktop background. I can't even open the task manager. Well I used the recovery disk and it said that I was missing a file from my sys file. I didn't catch the full file name but it was something like agvavi.exe or something to that effect. The other weird thing was that while I was running the recovery process the command prompt window kept popping up on the screen until I turned off the modem. How can I tell if someone has HACKED my system and deleted files for me? And is there anyway I could have transfered a virus from an external hard drive from PC to PC? Also how can I check my files on the command prompt to see what has been deleted? How far did you go with Recovery CD, and what is the CURRENT status of your computer? The recovery process finished, but it still did what i desricbed before. I formated the hard drive and then reloaded and it is fine now, but I don't want to plug it in to the net until I figure out what happend and how to prevent it again. Is this a Windows XP CD with shiny holograms all over it ? ?
Did you remember to re-install all your drivers including MBoard and video ? ?I installed the disc that came with the pc it was not a windows disc but says it has windows xp drivers on it. I have not changed any hardware on the pc so that disc also reinstalled the drivers. The new pc is fine now, but I want to know what I do to prevent the same thing from happening again. At first with my old PC I thought it happend because I kept turning it off with out shutting it off. But then my new pc did it without that problem and it did it while it was running. What exactly does it say on this CD ? ?
The drivers are normally on a seperate CD...depending on the manufacturer.Okay, let me say this again. The PC is operating fine now after i fomated the hard drive and re-installed everything. What I need to know is what happend and how can I prevent it from happening again. From time to time system files and or other files can become corrupted which may have caused this behaviour...
Since it is running fine now it's very possible this may have been the case.

But two things you can do in the MEANTIME:
DLoad and run the diagnostics from the hard drive manuf. site.
This will tell if the drive itself is healthy.

The second thing you can test is the RAM
DLoad and run MemTest...this will make sure the RAM is healthy...

Both of the above will create a bootable CD to run the respective tests.

Other than that if both test out fine you may want to consider a backup strategy.
I use Acronis True Image which creates an image of your entire drive.
The advantage to this is when you restore if things go wrong you don't have to re-install the OS and all your programs...it's all there in one operation, including all your data up to the point the image is created.

Hope this helps...

It also offers a drop down menu to choose other applications - which i am tryingwith no success. When I open it in word this is the KIND of text i GET:

I have tried making windows live the default email browser, and making sure the .net passport is set up for the current email i want. Help me out, how do I get it to change. If you are using your old account for messenger, but using your NEW account for email, you will only be able to see emails for your old account, this cannot be changed.
Is this what you are attempting to do?
If you switch all your instant messenger contacts over to your new account, and log into it, your new accounts email will be displayed. Quote from: Zylstra on January 02, 2008, 09:13:04 PM

I want the old account COMPLETELY wiped off the computer. It is windows messenger also, instead of msn messenger. I have changed the messenger account to the new one, but there is no contacts on that one, and I want to keep it that way. Still after changing the windows messenger account, it hasnt changed.ALso the old account is supposed to be on another computer and when I just tried to log on, with the other computer, all of my contacts are gone, but I didnt delete any contacts on the other computer.bump

No need to bump, 2 HOUR wait isnt much...

I think that one POSSIBLE issue might be Windows attempting to access your Passport account (XP is part of the Passport era, unfortunately...)

Click Start> Control Panel> (Find User Accounts)> (Select your account)> Somewhere in there, there should be a Hotmail/MSN/Passport setting. Change it to your new address. BTW: NEVER Use the XP Passport setting for a shared computer, as it will allow users on your computer to access this information. Quote from: Zylstra on January 04, 2008, 08:56:32 PM

this has been done, to no prevail. The problem has to be something like getting that account log in page to refresh. It still says I have 1768 emails unread when I have accumulated more than that the last few days.i guess no help with this one?

Thanks anyway though guys

Solve : Microsoft Outlook E-mail?

Answer» Hiya,
When receiving an e-mail to which you want to reply without including the initial messages - does anyone know to do it? I usually just send a new message each time, typing out the address again because the reply button includes all previous messages and after several replies back and forth it ends up being so large and messy. Wouldn't it be grrrrrreat to be able to hit the reply button while excluding all that had gone before?
Can it be done? If it can, and you know how to do it, please share your knowledge with me; I'd be sooooooo grateful!
Cheers!
Yes it can be done. What version of Outlook do you have? To find out, go to Help, About Microsoft Outlook. RIGHT on top it should tell you what version you have.
I use Outlook 2003 and to do it in this version, click tools, options. In the PREFERENCES tab, click Email options..., towards the middle of the box there should be a section that says on replies and forwards. Click the down arrow under when replying to a message and change that to do not include original message.

Hope this helps.Hi Panda25,

It's for my PC at work and I'm at home now. I'll look tomorrow to see what version I have. I only started there on Monday and today I was asked to find out by whatever means I can; I think it's 2007. I'm sure this will work so I'd like to say a big fat thank you......you're the BEST!

Solve : Excel - Automatic alerts, links etc?

Answer» Since I got a lovely reply to my last plea for help I THOUGHT I'd try again. I fully expect to wait LONGER for a reply to this but I'll be optimistically logging in each day.

Any SUGGESTIONS on WHETHER or not an automatic alert can be attached to certain cells in an spreadsheet that could be sent on a weekly basis to selected people?
Could the alert be set up so that the sender could select from a choice of messages?

I also need to know if a date cell could be linked within a microsoft project plan to a cell in an Excel worksheet.

If you have any useful suggestions; any at all, I would LOVE to hear from you. Cheers.
Do you mean like a comment, or like if you type any INVALID information into a cell?

About the date cell, if you put the formula in the cell, it should just attach to the project plan.

Solve : ntldr nonsense?

Answer»

ok,essentially i got a new pc a while back, but it recently went into meltdown,so i am currently TRYING to install XP onto the previous machine.
When i fired up the older machine, ready to install Windows, installation cd in the drive,BIOS set to boot from the cd etc,i got the 'ntldr is missing press alt/ctrl/del to restart',when i restart i get the same thing
I did some looking into the causes of the ntldr errors and tried various things..
ive reformatted the hardrive in another machine
i have swapped optical drives, swapped hardrives, and swapped IDE cables, reset the BIOS to default, checked and rechecked all cables and jumper settings on the motherboard and jumper settings on all drives, same result
ive tried a Windows boot/tools/live disc to no avail, and also a floppy bootdisc
The BIOS appears to see EVERYTHING as it should
Thoughts anyone?
I CANT seem to find much info on this happening at the beginning of a fresh install, almost every site ive looked at(including these forums), is written from the point of view of it happening to an installed version of Windows....and anyway i cant boot from cd or floppy,or get into the recovery console,so i cannot affect any so far found cures
try this:

instead of reformatting on another machine, get a w98 boot disk, use fdisk and delete any/all PARTITIONS on the disk, create/format a partition on the disk, after all is done(2 reboots??) then do a fdisk, sys:c....now reboot and you should come to a windows prompt...w98)...if that all worked fine now RETURN to where you started with trying to install OS from CD...

and make sure your BIOS is set to boot from CD first...Quote

BIOS set to boot from the cd etc,i got the 'ntldr is missing press alt/ctrl/del to restart',

What kind of CD are we talking about here? And is the CD drive known good? Correctly jumpered on a good cable?

PS it's hard drive, not 'hardrive'.

Solve : problems with windows reinstall?? (SOLVED :):):) )?

Answer»

ok so I was given a computer, fantastic thing, but it had lots of issues from being completely riddled with viruses, like one of the biggest was that it would not recognise any keyboard inserted into it... big issue!
OK so anyway, I decided that the BEST thing to do was to completely reinstall windows. I backed everything up etc and got it all READY.
I dont actually have a windows disc but in amongst some things that came with the computer I found a burnt windows XP 64-bit disc with a reg key written on it. Figuring that this would do the trick, I put it in the computer and it started to install it, it restarted and then asked me for the reg key. I entered the one that had been written on it but then it said that it had expired.
Now I dont know what to do - when I turn the computer on it just comes up with the installation and of course it cannot finish it so it just ENDS up turning off after a few windows pop up telling me about the "fatal error".
So now I have found a PROPER installation disc that I want to put it, but when I put it in, it is not recognised because of this failed installation going on...
Basically I want to know how I can overthrow this failed installation to install this proper disc.
Does that make sense? hope I have explained it well enough
Any help would be SOOOO SOOO appreciated!!
Many THANKS,
Flossy First try to set the BIOS to boot from CD first and restart with the windows CD in the drive.

or try a reformat of the hard drive and then try to add windows.Hi there, thanks for the help, its all sorted now

Solve : Identical emails being received?

Answer»

Very often I receive two or three emails from SOMEONE at same time, same content, same subject. What causes this ?it happens to me often no later than to-night i got 3 the same 1 min apart , think nothing of it , i think the person has hit send 3 timesYou may not want to use your email as a user name on a public Forum.
You'll wind up with a ton of emails once the spambots latch on to that....I've done this using gmail or yahoo ect. Sometime the webpage freeze or HANG and I click the send button again, then when it goes through I see it sent it a few times...

By now he's getting a ton of emails...not SURE how many will be duplicates though.simon do as patio says change your name , harryThis can happen if you have antivirus software scanning incoming MAIL. I've seen it with Norton's email scanner most often, but a couple of times with other AV packages.
Unless it is ALL email ALL the time then I would say that's the most likely culprit.an av emailscanner is only for virus's etc and it would stop them or warn you

these are coming through i think its only a mistake on the senders part

Solve : Random Freezes Unexplained?

Answer»

Hello,

I run an custom BUILT PC with vista 32 basic home, AMD 64 X2 4400,it has 2gb RAM, 512 ati radeon video card, 500gb HDD.

It started about a month ago, when my programs started to randomly freeze up, expecially games, but Firefox and other programs started to as well. The whole computer did not freeze up only the programs and it lasted anywhere from 15sec to a minute and then it WOULD come back. From time to time it would completely lock up and i would have to do a hard shut down. I have done everything i can think of up to this point, reading posts, making changes, i took the pc apart and cleaned and repaired anything that might have looked off. I have spoken with companies and they told me that it was a video card issue, and after getting a new video card it did not fix the problem. I then moved onto it being a power problem, upgrading froma 350watt to a 1000watt, and problem not fixed. I have cleaned, defragged, debugged, virus scans, anything i can think of short of buying a new pc up to this point.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, id be happy to add additional info upon request. Im getting extremely fustrated being that all my money for this pc is now stuggling to work. Makes running a guild and gaming very difficult at times.

Thank you for any information i am givenWhat is the RAM on the machine. Make...model....etc....

I have a machine running a 64 bit cpu and I didn't use the RAM they listed in the manual. My SYSTEM would freeze up for no reason...I changed over to RAM listed in the manual for the motherboard and everything is now fine.

I would check to see if the RAM you are using is approved for the motherboard.

Solve : Microsoft Office 2003 locks up & takes too much space?

Answer»

Hi! I have a Dell 4100 running Windows XP. I'm having several problems. I'll stick to one problem for this post.

I run MS Outlook 2003 with all updates needed. In trying to clean up my computer & remove some unnecessary stuff, I realized it TAKES up 444 MB just for the program. PLUS archive.pst files. Lately it has begun to crash too. I have to CLEAR up some space on my system to be able to defrag. I don't even have 15% free space it requires! Any ideas on Outlook crashing or taking up so much space?

Thanks a bunch!

Solve : Need to format drive due to virus?

Answer»

I've read another post from milesman about this, but if you use the FORMAT.BAT and you
can't get to Windows, do you type this when you obtain a command prompt from safe
mode ?

If this works, is the hard drive ready to re-INSTALL win xp pro ?

On a different machine, I had this PROBLEM and got the drives formatted outside of the
home machine and put them back in the home machine, but the Windows XP Pro CD
still wouldn't load the Windows XP program. I don't understand why ?You can't format C: from C:...no matter what command is used...
Why not just let the XP install handle this chore ? ?
It is bootable.
Check the boot ORDER in the BIOS and set it to floppy, CD then HDD.That was the first thing I tried and it resulted in a BSOD.What new hardware/software has been installed on this machine recently ? ?I built the entire machine about 6 weeks ago and it was working fine with no new
equipment. I had a virus and decided to format and reinstall. No new equipment.
The hard drive will be formatted, hopefuly by using the FORMAT.BAT

It is bootable.
Check the boot order in the BIOS and set it to floppy, CD then HDD.
the only "preparation" required for installing XP is to plug in the hard drive- booting from and installing XP from the CD will handle everything else.I've tried the usual way of re-installing XP using the XP CD, but each time it results in a BSOD.
This is not a typical case.

Thanks anyway.so you think formatting first, and then installing it will fix it?

a little more info on what BSOD, if you recall (or get it again) would be helpful. If it has a virus or a Trojan, formatting will remove everything. Isn't that right? Then I would have
a clean slate to start with and I think all I would need is my licensed XP install disk and the
original drivers, Correct ?

I will try to add the salient points of the BSOD:

STARTED install with the XP CD in as startup disk, deleted the C:/Windows partition, started the format
routine, got 50%+ through formatting, then BSOD

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
Technical Info ***STOP: 0x000000D1 (0xFF07F07B, 0X00000002, 0x00000000, 0xFF07F07B)

C:\Windows is a directory, not a partition.

did you delete C? did you press D, and then have to confirm with L to delete the partition?

And then create a NEW partition?

You could try one of the other three options for formatting- quick and full for both Fat32 and NTFS leaves four options, minus the one you chose.

Solve : XP Pro installation takes way too long! [SOLVED]?

I've ran into a very strange problem installing XP; it can take up to 15 hours! And then when I get to the GUI configuration part; the mouse moves too slow and jumpy to bear. I am trying to get it on on an older system, but I recall someone have the same problem as me elsewhere on the internet with way better specifications than me. Anyways, when installing XP, it freezes on certain file installations and takes 10 minutes! The rest copy quick and fast.

A couple things:
1. I tried switching out the CDROM drive.
2. I tried using a friends disk (with my SERIAL) after mine didn't work.
3. I ran memtest and GOT no errors.
4. I have a great Western Digital HDD which with running their disk check utility was fine.
5. I tried resetting the BIOS.

Any other suggestions? It's really starting to get on my nerves!

Solve : Serious Computer Problem.?

Answer»

So the other day I come home from work around 8 in the morning, since I work night shift.
I turn on my laptop and notice that it waits at the light blue screen where it shows the stats of the computer, like what the OS is, HD info, and the processor for like 5 minutes.
It finally boots up to Windows and it takes so long for everything to come up and load, when it usually happens right away, and none of my major programs will open.
They all receive errors.
Programs like Itunes, AIM, Sony Vegas. there is also a Net Framework error, and a problem with Microsoft. net runtime.
Smaller programs work such as VLC media player, Paint, Notepad., internet explorer.
There are also some other weird things going on.
When I open Mozilla Firefox, the scroll bar is on the LEFT side of the screen instead of the right.
Flash is no longer installed, or so it says.
Also the customized LOOK of it isn't there.
Ran Spybot, found a bunch of things but problem still exists.
Also deleted some programs I don't need anymore.
Light blue stats screen also no longer waits for minutes.
That was the only thing back to normal.
Later on I ran MALWAREBYTES the full version, and another antivirus program, still nothing.
Internet explorer was absolutely FINE, and could run flash.
However major programs still wouldn't open, and Mozilla is still screwed up.
Then today I ran a Windows Live One scan online.
It found nothing.
It seemed as if after every virus scan, my computer got worse.
I restarted my laptop, and it said the profile could not be loaded.
I kept trying, and it said the same thing.
I left if off for about 5 minutes with the battery out, PUT if back in, when it got to the light blue screen it waited for about 10 seconds, then bam dark blue screen pops up for about half a second and the laptop restarts again.
I'm hoping this isn't the blue screen of death, it seemed to quick for it to be.
I don't have a full version of Windows XP Home to do a repair, or even the disk it came with.
I can't lose the files I have on here.
They're to important.
The hard drive also makes a click, click, clickkkkk sound when it's stressed with lots of things going on.
Not a LOUD click, but a more like loading click you hear from desktops.
I have a Dell Latitude D600(piece of junk)
Windows XP Home Edition.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE help.
I can get a COPY of the full Xp Home OS, to do a repair.
I just can't lose my files.
If that won't work, is there a way to get files off the hard drive, even when it won't load up?
Thank you for your time.If your hdd is "clicking" you need to back up your stuff and replace it...NOW
