Solve : windows media player help - cant play online files? |
Answer» I just got an ipod so I was looking for a way to find music to put on it. I went on the walmart.com website and looked up artists that I like. On walmart.com you can listen to samples of each track on the cd and then decided if you want to buy that track. Well Windows MEDIA Player will not play any of the samples. I can play music that is already on my computer in Windows Media Player, but I can't play music from an ONLINE link. I upgraded to the NEWEST version of Windows Media Player version 11 and then went on the MIcrosoft website and downloaded all the upgrades it said my computer needed, but I still can't get any of the samples to play. Does anyone know how to fix this? I know I can play the samples in Windows Media Player because on my friend's computer which is a desktop, it works; but it does not work on my laptop which is a Dell Inspiron E1405.Since I recently attended a presentation about downloading music and using software to play it, I was interested in this and just now visited walmart.com to see how I could listen to music samples. What I learned is that you need to install "Walmart Music Downloads Store" software. It's about a 4MB file that installs automatically once you give the OK while on their website. You'll need to allow and ActiveX control to run in Internet Explorer, and you do need to use Internet Explorer (support for Firefox is forthcoming, but I did not a date). |

Answer» What is with this "new"version of HOTMAIL. Every time I hit the desktop icon a page comes up that tells me to enable cookies. When I go thru what I am told to do, I STILL get the same message. Anybody ELSE experience this?Which Internet browser are you using? And do you mean Windows live Hotmail? Is the icon a direct link to the hotmail webpage?I'm not entirely sure which icon you are talking about? Why not open your Internet browser and TYPE in http://www.hotmail.com? You could also just set it as your default home page so when ever you open you web browser you will automatically be at Hotmail. Solve : My Files/settings are gone and replaced with another user's settings (XP Pro)? |
Answer» My lovely children got to my computer this morning and logged in as me, RATHER than as "KIDS". Now, when I try to LOG in as "me", all of my settings are gone and the scene and settings look LIKE when you log in as the "kids" . When I try to go into explorer, it tells me I have to install it. Same with all other programs. Nothing shows up as installed. If I pull up my programs list, it still lists my programs such as itunes, word, etc., but if I try to run them, they all need to be installed. (Logging in as "kids" still looks like "kids" though.) If I look for my Word documents through another user's Word, I can find them, under "kids documents", "shortcut to me documents". I looked at doing system restore but somewhere in the process it looks like system checkpoints have been deleted because the only system checkpoint it shows is from today and is after the change occurred. |

Solve : Rebooting causing Device failure.? |
Answer» I'll try and start at the beginning. I fried my last mobo and was forced to rebuild. I picked up an Asus P5GDC mobo & a P4 3.21 Ghz processor. Shoved my old 2x1gig sticks of ram in it, and ran my ancient copy of winxp sp1. I'm sure many of you know how painstaking it is to reinstall your OS and work out the bugs. So I update to SP2 get all my service packs. grab all the latest drivers and I hit my first major snag. For some strange reason the device manager wouldn't recognize my brand new ATI Radeon 9550 (pci-e). I went through the bios and disabled onboard video. changed it from booting pci before pci-e and still I could not get the thing to work. Frustrated I took it down to the local computer shop and I recieved a call the next day that the video card was bad. So I order it replaced with an Nvidia 7300 GS. Computer guy says it runs great and sends it home along with a HEFTY bill. So I take it out of the box plug it up and sit down to play a NEWLY installed game. And I start receiving error messages. One after another. Computer cannot find device. Application failed to start because device could not be initialized. yada yada yada. "BIG Headache!!" I found that all I had to do was uninstall the video card, restart, reinstall the video card and reinstall directX. Worked PERFECTLY. (and I know what your saying.. "why am I reading this?") I cannot find a way for my system to KEEP the drivers and/or card working. I live in Tampa FL. The lightning capital of the world. Every power outage, every time I have to update windows, or a program, I'm forced to reboot. This causes the card to stop working. I just want to know if anyone out there has EVER had this problem themselves or knows how I could fix it... |

Solve : help with windows media player? |
Answer» I watched my soap opera's regularly thru cbs with windows media player. I also checked out my the highlights of my baseball team. My COMPUTER crashed the other night. I now have everything up and running, but I can not watch these videos with media player anymore. I dont get an error message or anything. The video starts for a second says buffering and then quits. I try again and I get the same thing. I checked my firewall to SEE if wmp was being blocked and NO. Full access to the internet. Please help. I have tried everything else. Thanks Alot Have you tried to uninstall and then reinstall it? What version of media player do you have?I have uninstalled and reinstalled 3 times. I used both wmp 10, and 11. I currently have version 10. I just dont understand what the problem is. I checked my firewall and Media player was given full access to the internet. What about your default settings? Is WMP your default media player? Version 11 should install over 10, so you should not be able to access 10. Have to tried to watch a DVD or a video from the internet?Quote from: clilangelsk on September 23, 2007, 05:00:45 PM I watched my soap opera's regularly thru cbs with windows media player. Thanks Alot What were you doing when the computer crashed? What error messages did you get? If your system crashed, it did so for a reason.. If everything is up and running...what was it that you did to get it that way?Yes wmp is my default player. As for version 10 that was factory installed so unless i download 11, I will only have 10. I really dont know what else to do. I have downloaded 11 and when the problem didnt correct I deleted the program. All it did was DELETE the newest version, therefore 10 was still available. The Saviour. I was playing a game when the pc crashed. It had been acting up for a while. Having problems with my anti virus, aol everything. The only thing that did work was my media player. The different video's online that I would watch would play on their site. I didnt have to open wmp. The actual media player screen never came up. That program was used to view the video. As for watching movies thru the wmp screen I have no problem with that. It works fine. The problem is media player is not connecting with the internet. I checked my firewall settings again and wmp has full access. All I did was reinstall the BACK up disc I have for the computer. It took it back to origional factory settings. Then I redownload the other programs anti virus, java, etc... and went thru a massive amount of updates. Everything is running fine now. Except wmp which is not connecting to the internet for some reason. What browser and version are you using to browse the Internet? Internet Explorer 6...7? Firefox?Aol 9.0 VR could this be the problem up until the pc crashed I used Aol 9.0 Security edition. If so how do I go back to 9.0 security edition, without needing a disc? If you are using AOL...it is possible their security measures are keeping you from playing videos withn their browser as a safety precaution. You may need to contact their support to see if this is INDEED the issue here. If you are connected to the Internet...try opening Internet Explorer...go to those pages that will not play the videos...see if IE will play them...I'm sure they will...but I've been wrong before. You should have Internet Explorer installed on your computer...do you? Give it a shot and let us know... |

Solve : Tweaking windows x-p (Full Guide)? |
Answer» Adjust Graphics for Speed Windows XP has a lot of new cool looking visual elements, however, those new elements take up more RAM and cause your computer to be less responsive. By tweaking your graphics settings, you can increase the performance of your computer. To get started, Let's reduce the color quality. This setting determines how many colors are displayed on your screen. 1. Right click on your desktop and select properties. 2. Click on the settings tab and adjust the color quality drop down box to Medium (16 Bit). 3. Click OK. Next, let's use the windows performance settings to optimize your computer for performance. This will revert back to the old Windows 2000 look as well as take away a lot of the fancy graphics effects. However, if you are really into performance, this is the price you have to pay. 1. Right click on the My Computer icon on your desktop or in your start panel and select properties. 2. Next, Click on the Advanced tab and hit the setting button under performance. 3. On the visual effects tab, select Adjust for Best Performance and hit OK. 4. Hit OK once more to exit system properties. Now your computer will run slightly faster! Speed Boot I found that creating a script to run on shutdown that deletes the temp folder and history shaved 2.5 seconds on my boot time, down do 10.5 secs. Create a batch file by doing the following: 1) Open notepad and enter the following lines: RD /S /q "C:\Documents and Settings\"UserName without quotes"\Local Settings\History" RD /S /q "C:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Local Settings\History" RD /S /q "D:\Temp\" <--"Deletes temp folder, type in the location of your temp folder" 2) Save the fily and then rename is something like deltemp.bat 3) Now click Start, Run and type in gpedit.msc --->Computer Configuration --->Windows Settings --->Scripts and double click on Shutdown --->Click Add and find the batch file you created and press ok to set the script Disable unnecessary programs 1. Start Regedit. 2. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ Run 3. Once there, locate any entry's on the right. You can identify the program by the path to the executable. Find programs that you can live without starting up from the LIST. 4. Right click on them and select Delete 5. You may also want to navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ Runonce and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion \Run. 6. Delete unnecessary programs. 7. Also go to START - PROGRAMS - STARTUP and see if there is anything there you wish to remove. 8. Reboot your computer. Disable XP Boot Logo It is possible to disable XP splash screen, which will slightly speed up the overall boot process. Be aware that removing the splash screen will also cause you not to see any boot-up messages that might come up (chkdsk, convert ... ), but if your system runs without any problems then it should not matter. 1. Edit boot.ini 2. Add " /noguiboot" right after "/fastdetect". (or check the /noguiboot switch in msconfig on the boot.ini tab) Upon restarting, the splash screen will be gone. It can be re-enabled by removing the new switch. Correcting System Hang at Startup If your system hangs about 2 or 3 minutes at startup, where you can't access the Start button or the Taskbar, it may be due to one specific service (Background Intelligent Transfer) RUNNING in the background. Microsoft put out a patch for this but it didn't work for me. Here's what you do: 1. Click on Start/Run, type 'msconfig', then click 'OK'. 2. Go to the 'Services' tab, find the 'Background Intelligent Transfer' service, disable it, apply the changes & reboot. Disable unnecessary services to free system resources Services are programs that run when the computer starts up and continue to run as they aid the operating system in functionality. There are many services that load and are not needed which take up memory space and CPU time. Disabling these services will free up system resources which will speed up your overall computer experience. I recommend that you sort through the list and read the descriptions to decide if you need that service depending on what you want to do with your computer. Remember, you can always turn the service back on if you find that you need it in the future. Below is the procedure to turn off a service. 1. Click the start button. 2. Select run from the bottom of the right column. 3. Then type services.msc in the box and click ok. 4. Once the services window has loaded we are ready to turn off unneeded services. 5. For instructional purposes we are going to turn off the Portable Media Serial Number service. 6. Find this service in the list and select it with the mouse. 7. Right click and select Properties. 8. Once the properties windows has loaded locate the Start up type drop down box and select disable. 9. Then just click ok and the next time the computer starts the service will not be loaded. Faster Dual Boot Timeout If you dual boot your PC using Windows XP's dual boot process, you can reduce the timeout period your PC uses before booting to the default OS. This tweak is useful if you boot to the default OS most of the time and only boot to the other OS's on a limited basis. 1)Locate and Open the hidden file "boot.ini" in notepad or your favorite text editor. This file will likely be in the root directory on the boot partition of your "master" HD. For example, mine is located in "C:\boot.ini" even though I have Win98 loaded on this partition and the boot.ini file was generated when I loaded WinXP on "D:/" 2) Locate the line - timeout=30 (default is 30 seconds). Change this value to any time desired. I chose 10. Be careful not to choose too low of a setting or you may not have time to select your other OS's. Also, be careful not to change other lines as this may prevent your PC from booting at all. 3)Save the file. The next time you boot your PC, the changes will take effect. HDD slowdown when booting If, like I had , you have a 3min+ or slower boot time where Windows XP seems to sit for 2+ or so minutes with the XP logo doing nothing before everything comes to life, then do the following. Download Bootvis from www.microsoft.com and run it the next time you boot. Do a 'Trace' If it shows a very long 'HDD init' time of minutes rather than seconds then this is how to fix it. This example assumes you have 1 Hard drive on your primary IDE channel and a DVD-ROM(or CD) and CD-R on your two secondary IDE channels. Go to start > right click on my computer > click properties. Click Hardware > Device Manager. Go to IDE/ATAPI Controllers. Select primary channel. Right click properties. Click the Advance settings tab. Then on the device (0 or 1)that does not have 'device type' greyed out select 'disable' instead of 'autodetect'. This should stop windows trying to find a drive that isn't there. If you have your IDE channels set up differently simply repat the above for the secondary IDE channel settings. When I did this my boot time went from 3mins 20 to 35 seconds. Classic Start Menu Mode (Browsing Boost) WARNING: Keep in mind that this tweak is intended for people using the "Classic Start Menu" mode to browse trough the Start Menu. If your Start Menu loads right away when you click on it, but goes slow while you browse trough it, this will certainly solve your problem. It's quite simple actually, just follow these steps: 1. Right Click on your taskbar and choose "Properties" 2. Choose the "Start Menu" Tab and then click on "Customize"(Classic Start Menu Obviously) 3. Scroll Down the "Advanced Start Menu Options" list and uncheck the "Use Personalized Menus" OPTION, click "OK", then "Apply" and "OK" to finish. There's no need to reboot, you'll see the difference right away. Another good advice to keep you start menu working smooth is to RESTRICT the number of programs and icons listed as much as possible, keep in mind that it works just like any other regular folder, the less you index, the faster it gets. Shutdown XP using your keyboard Wouldn’t it be great to EASILY shut down or restart your computer with a simple keystroke? Well now you can! You know about “Ctrl, Alt, Delete”, but what about “Ctrl, Alt, END”? Here's how it's done. The instructions are quite simple, and as long as you follow along, this should be rather painless! Please follow step by step! 1. Right click on your desktop. Go to new, and then click on shortcut. 2. A window comes up. Type in “shutdown” (without quotes) add a space and enter one of the following commands. *I GIVE THE FOLLOWING CREDIT TO Eric Greveson, who posted how change shutdown settings below. ------------------------------------------ Usage: shutdown [-i | -l | -s | -r | -a] [-f] [-m \\computername] [-t xx] [-c "comment"] [-d up:xx:yy] -i Display GUI interface, must be the first option -l Log off (cannot be used with -m option) -s Shutdown the computer -r Shutdown and restart the computer -a Abort a system shutdown -m \\computername Remote computer to shutdown/restart/abort -t xx Set timeout for shutdown to xx seconds -c "comment" Shutdown comment (maximum of 127 characters) -f Forces running applications to close without warning -d [p]:xx:yy The reason code for the shutdown u is the user code p is a planned shutdown code xx is the major reason code (positive integer less than 256) yy is the minor reason code (positive integer less than 65536) 2. (Continuation) a good example of a shutdown line would read as follows: “shutdown -s -t 0” (of course, without the quotes) This tells the computer to run the shutdown program, and to shutdown the computer (marked by –s). The timer is set to zero, which will shut down the computer instantly (marked by –t 0) 3. After you have created your customized shutdown command, click next. Enter a name for it and hit finish 4. Right click on the shortcut you just created, and go to properties. 5. Note where it says “Shortcut Key”. Enter your combination here. I recommend “Ctrl, Alt, END” as stated before, but the choice is purely up to you. 6. Click OK. Your shutdown string is now effective! Just hit that key combination and your computer is off! Increase speed by tweaking prefetcher settings This is an unique technique for XP, which could improve the performance significantly by tweaking the prefetcher (which is a cache folder). 1. run "regedit"; 2. goto [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\PrefetchParameters\EnablePrefetcher]; 3. Set the value to either 0-Disable, 1-App launch prefetch, 2-Boot Prefetch, 3-Both ("3" is recommended). 4. reboot. It should decrease the boot time and the time it takes to load programs. I can post a load more ..... i didn't make this tweaks i found them off a few sites the sites would break the rules if i posted them so im just pasting the tweaks , if there's a particular tweak you would like just let me know and i will do some hunting . Solve : Pressing up arrow shuts down computer? |
Answer» I recently reformatted my master HARD drive and re-installed Window XP Pro. At the same time I installed Linux OS on my slave drive (Ubuntu Feisty Fawn). Since doing this WHENEVER I press the up arrow BUTTON the computer shuts down. It will do this if I boot to either Windows or Linux OS. How can I change the function of the up arrow to move the cursor and not shut down my machine?Do you mean it just GOES off - POW - the very same moment you press the up arrow, or that it goes into a normal shutdown? Your keyboard has probably become defective. Check with some other keyboard whether the problem persists or not. That is good advice. Try another keyboard. Although this is very strange. I do not see how the same keypress could shut down the PC in both Windows and Linux. |

Solve : Cannot remove boot menu and start menu pictures.? |

Answer» Hello. I recently installed a "Topthemes" package. It seemed ok and my av(Kaspersky 7.0) didn't detect any viruses. I did not like the pictures so I removed the program from the Add/Remove in the Control Panel. The problem is that I still have two or three pictures that I can't remove. I am unable to locate these files anywhere . I have followed the steps I found in the forums before I decided to post this. Unfortunately, none of them helped. |

Solve : Monitor Off Manually OK??? |
Answer» Hi My PC,HP Vistas, comes back on after just a few minutes of being in "Sleep Mode" or when using "Power Management". HP FORUM says this is a fairly common problem when CONNECTED to a cable modem. The modem keeps triggering the PC to wake. I know this is probably a very basic question but is there any way I might HARM my PC by manually turning the monitor, only the monitor, off? This novice sure appreciates any help/advice. ThanksThat will not harm your PC. You can prevent it from waking up via modem by disabling the feature in bios and also in the NIC properties. The feature is called "Wake on Lan", or sometimes just "WOL" and it's a BIOS setting. It's designed for network computers so that a touch of the key starts the workstation... Er, no, that's ordinary suspend. Wake On Lan is where the PC is woken up by the network (or LAN). Oooops...thanx for the correction ! |

Solve : New File Extension Portal? |
Answer» Hi, Format and name: Roshal Archive File So far so good. Each extension has its little explanation. Underneath that, for every extension, you get this message: Quote Windows Cannot Open RAR [or whatever the extension is] Files? "run a free registry scan" is a blue underlined link. Underneath this, on every RESULT page you see this fairly helpful text Quote File Extensions You don't have to sign up for anything, there are no popups, and it has not tried to run any scripts. You don't have to take the free scan if you don't want to. The site seems to be provided by Uniblue, formerly Liu Utilities, who market paid-for SOFTWARE such as RegistryBooster 2 SpeedUpMyPC 3 SpyEraser WinTasks 5 WinTasks 5 Pro WinBackup 2 WinBackup 2 Pro WinBackup 2 Server I don't suppose the OP put that message up out of the goodness of his heart, but the advertising "come-on" is pretty gentle compared with some sites I have seen, and there is some fairly useful information there. Nothing you couldn't find out elsewhere, but quite handy to have all in one place. Quite often I have Googled about a DLL, or process, or extension, and have ended up at a Liu Utilities data page. This seems a rebranding and rearrangement of a fairly well known site. Yeah I also checked it out and saw that it didn't appear to be anything harmful or filled with ads. The info on the site seems to be okay but a search function would have been nice. Judging solely on the 5 minutes I spent on the site, I'd say I still prefer filext.com simply because it has a search function. Like you I don't think the link was posted here just because the OP felt like sharing. Since it was posted here to generate traffic to the site I see it as a form of spam, good info or not.Agree. Mild spam is still spam. It is actually incorrect when it says that the extension is "the letters that follow the full stop of the filename" (whatever that is). An extension can contain letters, numbers, and any non-special character eg .([a3 is a valid extension The dot does not separate the filename from the extension: it is part of the extension. |

Solve : Clean system format? |
Answer» Okay, so I bought this computer from my brother. I had XP professional installed and the thing was working great used it like that for about a month. Then I decided to revert back to XP Home cause that was the OS that came with the computer atleast then I would be on a LEGAL (my copy) OS. Anyways, I ordered the CD's from Compaq My computer is SR1817CL. The only thing that has changed in the computer is the hard drive unfortunatley I am having to use a 120GB IDE drive but it is 7200rpm's anyways, when I loaded the 10 CD recovery disks for this computer it finally finished after about a 3 hour process and it is so slow sometimes. Before I could actually play DVD's and stuff with professional. My beleif is that either compaq's recovery disks suck or I have to delete alot of this preinstalled software like misc games and stuff i'll never use or pop out the modem cause I don't use it anyways. I have a Athlon 64 2.0ghz with 1.2gb of available RAM. This is kinda rediculous also I've tried a couple of applications like Eusing Free Registry Cleaner and CCleaner or whatever. Is this a common issue? also is there anyway to like extract XP Home from the disks or format and install a clean XP Home OS? I'll be on all NIGHT so just lemme know what you think. Sometimes the old drivers work fine and the new ones have problems.very true |

Solve : Unable to Boot Up? |
Answer» My new laptop froze for the first time today, while playing a video on real media player. When hitting alt-control-delete failed to bring about any result, I manually shut it down. My new laptop froze for the first time today, Is that new, as in under warranty new? Boot into your bios and change it to boot from the CD drive first and hard drive second. I'm not 100% sure how you boot into your particular bios as they are different depending on who made it. I believe for yours it's F12, but it should say when booting. Then put your Windows XP CD in and restart. Windows XP has an option to repair windows. This is like reinstalling your OS only it keeps your current files intact. In other words it won't over write all of your files. Seeing as how you say you really need them. Then only flaw in this plan is if you don't own a copy of Windows XP. In which case you are going to have to buy one. So once you boot from your XP cd you will have a few options. You want to press R for repair. Don't go past this screen without pressing R or you will just reinstall Windows and over write all of your files. I hope this helps. I bought it new in May. All my warranty stuff (and my XP CD) are in the US, but once I can convince a friend to mail stuff to me I'll start working on everything. The last driver safe mode loads is mup.sys. It then TELLS me that I can skip loading sptd.sys by hitting escape. Whether or not I hit escape, the computer freezes and starts over. |

Answer» When I click on the YELLOW folder on the menu bar to open a document, or alternately click on File, then Open, I get a small window showing the documents. Somehow, I hit a WRONG key or two, and now when I use the Open command, I get a full screen version of my documents. I can't determine what I did or how to get it back to NORMAL. Any suggestions?Hit alt+space and then press the R key. This should restore the window to the correct size for you. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I spent about 3 hours yesterday trying to figure it out. Can you tell me where to find the ANSWER in the help topics? Does that command work with anything else? I'm not sure if that would be in the help topics. It's not a Microsoft Word specific shortcut. That shortcut will work with resizing almost any window. If you hit alt+space and then wait you will see a list drop down in the upper left of the window. That's where you can find the different options of what you can do to that window.Thank you again. You've been extremely HELPFUL. Thank heavens for these forums. I have had more help from these than any manual, on line or otherwise. You're more than welcome. That's what these forums are here for. |

Solve : icons and start button disappear what do i do to get them back?? |
Answer» My brother was downloading some crap and then my icons and the start button disappear what HAPPENED how do i get the start button back? I cant access control panel or anything? What OS and what protections are you running? Can you see anything in safemode?Ctrl Alt Delete go to new task type explorer Quote from: Spero-T on September 12, 2007, 04:48:49 AM Ctrl Alt Delete go to new task type explorerThis is somewhat half-assed ADVICE, I think. If the problem only happens once, this is fine (UNLESS they're using an older OS). But if it keeps happening, there's a bigger issue at hand. enjisweet, have you restarted your computer since posting here? Does your problem still persist? What version of Windows do you have? What was your brother downloading? What protection do you have?Yes I restarted the computer I have windows XP. I have no icons in safe mode either. My brother was on utorrent which is some music download junk, and thats when the icons were never seen again.Quote What protection do you have?I say this a lot, but... If at all POSSIBLE, you should post a HijackThis log. It would help give us a better idea of what might be going on. |

Solve : Pictures Exist But... Don't Exist?? |
Answer» Okay. I'm using Microsoft Windows XP Professional, v. 5.1. I've had my computer since 2002 and it's been faaaairly reliable. I've had two major issues with it since I got it, the biggest one being last summer when I lost everything on my C drive (luckily for me, I had another hard drive with MOST of my important stuff and it made it out unscathed) because I couldn't turn it off in time during a thunderstorm. |

Answer» I am not SURE that I am really downloading Microsoft updates when I click the yellow shield in the system tray (with the exclamation mark). When I click the button, it disappears for three seconds and then returns. I have set my computer to automatic updates. I am using Firefox, not Internet Explorer. I am also using a legal registered version of Microsoft. Here are the last entries from the update.log file: |

Solve : reformatted pc, did xp sp2 updates, now resolution is massive? |
Answer» HELLO, i decided it was time to REFORMAT the pc, it was running slow, and i havent done it for a while. anyway, reformatted, and it went WELL, transferred all my stuff back over on my network, got the internet running, then i did the obligatory updates. after doing the sp2 update, my resolution turns huge, like SAFE mode, i tried looking under display settings, but couldnt find anything there. anyway, i ask my brother to "TAKE a look" as he has had some success in the past. anyway, i left him alone and he makes it worse, he said he disabled teh video card in the display settings. now when i try to restart, it goes to the black screen with the safe mode startup options (it has 3- with network, with dos, and plain safe mode, as well as last known configuration). also, when i select any one of them, it starts spitting out a stream of words to the effect of partition, etc etc. and then it freezes. i believe it might be due to the video card, but how do i re enable it. i already have been into the bios and looked at the settings and the video card was disabled, i changed it back to enabled, but it still doesnt work. any tips, thanks in advanceAfter you reformatted, did you reinstall the video driver? That sounds like what your problem was. |

Solve : Dell Media Experience Folder opens when I log on? |
Answer» WINDOWS XP, IE 7, have all the latest downloads/updates. RECENTLY installed Dell Support Center which seems to be okay, but now when I restart or log on to my computer it opens a window for Dell MEDIA Experience, which it never did before. I'm a novice, don't know where to look to have this turned off or not happen. It's not the end of the world, i simply close it and move about my business, but i was just curious. I tried the dell site but they weren't all that much help. Thanks for listening. Go Startmsconfig Hit Enter. Click on Startup tab. Look for: PCMService.exe entry Remove checkmark. Click OK.Thanks for the info, i'll go see what i can find. Didn't see that particular entry pcmservice.exe in my startup list, but maybe i'm just not seeing it. I tried to copy what was there out to this post, but it wouldn't let me. so i'll keep looking. thanks again. Get AUTORUNS: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/Utilities/AutoRuns.mspx After installation, click on "Logon" tab, go File>Save As, save it as text file, and paste its CONTENT in your next post.sorry been gone a while, but thanks broni for the tip. not sure what the issue was but it fixed itself. i'm learning as i go, you guys are great.I'm glad, it fixed itself |

Solve : Computer locked up with strange characters on screen? |
Answer» XP desk top computer won't boot. Upon turning machine on, only a black screen appears with seven "characters" of: a backward 'f', square happy face, heart, cap letter 'A', lower case 'f', a comma, and what looks like a bell or a Christmas tree, and then a blinking cursor. Hit enter or any other KEY, and all that happens is a repeat of this line of characters. purchased three months agoYou don't want to fix it. You want to send it back.Hello Broni, Thank you for your response. Much Appreciated. I feared that would be my only solution. Inquiring minds do want to know: What is it? Lisa b. BTW: I certainly want to say thank you to YOU, and others like you who know about these things, for making yourselves available to those of us with lesser experience who get STUCK in these techno-nightmare situations. Well, it looks to me like some hardware problem (motherboard?), but I'm not really hardware guy. We'll find out, when they'll send it back to you. |

Solve : in a real STICK at school (might need SOME ms-dos experiance)? |
Answer» Im stuck at school... ever since the begining of the year my login hasnt been WORKING properly.. all my files have been deleted and i am, appearantly, not logging ONTO the schools server, so all my programs like AR reader, MS-word, etc. are missing. I opened MS dos ONCE to look at what it says, and they accused me of breaking it, even though it was didnt work BEFORE i opened it... I need to fix it and proove myself innocent, but how? Well i'm sure you could understand why we might be reluctant to assist... I agree... The Elementary/Jnr High thing wouldn't be a problem as I'm pretty sure the IT Admin would be able to sort that (or even notice this) if it was the root of things... ... no one is willing to help me!!! i didnt even do anything *censored*! i know alot about computers; you name it i can do it... but that doesnt mean that i would wreck my OWN account...Sorry. It's our Policy not to assist circumventing any Administrator based systems.Unfortunately we cannot offer much help as we do not know exactly how the network was set up to begin with, nor do we know exactly what you're trying to do with the server.would it help if i knew the administrators password? because i OVERHEARD them talking one day--- pass is student lolQuote from: liambiscuit on December 24, 2007, 06:04:18 AM would it help if i knew the administrators password? No, it wouldn't. As Patio already said, it's against policy for anyone here to assist you with this. I suggest dropping it. Take it up with your school and the system admins, they're the only ones who can help you. Could a moderator lock this topic? There's no reason for this discussion to continue. |

Solve : Trouble viewing videos? |
Answer» FIRST off I am an idiot on computers, I have windows XP home version when I get a video on email some will run and some wont. I get a message saying no file to support this. I think it is related to power point but that is a guess. HELP. Tom THANKS FOR ALL THE HELPWhat are the file extensions of those videos, you're getting (extension = three letters after 'dot", like "somemovie.avi", where "avi" is an extension). What program are you using to open those files?Download video codac and install it. Its AVAILABLE on www.freedownload.com Your videos may work. Telling the user to download some random "video codac" (I assume you mean codec) is not good advice milind717. There are hundreds of video codecs available. That's why Broni is asking about what types of files the user can't play. Furthermore the site you linked to is just a PARKED domain, which only purpose is to generate ad revenue, it is not a real website. I beleive the letters I have seen were PPS I haven't tried to run one for quite a while. Thanks TomThose are PowerPoint presentations...you may need MSOffice updates unless you have a PPT viewer installed....Powerpoint Viewer downloadI have power point viewer installed I also downloaded power point 2003 a while ago I got a forward and a message came up "Windows MEDIA cannot play this file ,,might not support this file type or might not support the codec used to compress this file" Now what? TomTry Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer 2007: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Office-tools/Other-Office-Tools/PowerPoint-Viewer.shtml If that doesn't work, most likely the file is corrupted. If Windows Media Player is opening when you try to open a pps file, there could be a PROBLEM with file association. Did you ever try to open pps with Media Player? If you did it once, it will always try to open such files with the media player. You will have to right click the file, save it somewhere on your computer and then right click the file and select "open with" then select your pp viewer. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307859 |
