The USB Port on my hp 4910 laptop suddenly stopped recognizing anything I plug into it.

Can you give us examples of the type of USB devices you've tried (Keyboard, mouse, flash drive, external hard drive, CD-ROM)? It might point us in the right direction.
When did you DROP the laptop ?

Solve : Can't delete a lot of my email messages?

Answer»

I have a Windows 2000 IBM ThinkPad Laptop.

I made a mistake and forwarded an email message to everyone in my address book.
In the process, I somehow made it so I can DELETE some messages, but not all, and I can't delete large blocks of messages anymore, so the messages are building.

I'm not a very computer savy person yet, but if there is a simple way to walk me through the steps to making it so I can delete anything again, that would be great.
Thanks What do you use for email ? ?What do you use for email ? ?

Hi....I'm answering this response by Patio.

I use Outlook ExpressQuote from: lilac on MARCH 29, 2008, 04:21:12 PM

I can delete some messages, but not all, and I can't delete large blocks of messages anymore ...
Please elaborate on that. What do you MEAN by "delete large blocks of messages"? Do you NORMALLY delete messages from various folders to the Deleted Items folder and then empty the Deleted Items folder at CERTAIN intervals?

If you right click on your Deleted Items folder and select "Empty 'Deleted Items' Folder", can you empty it that way? If not, what happens?

Solve : Outlook Express 6 password rejected?

Answer»

When trying to log on to Outlook express 6 I get the following error message:

There was a problem logging onto your MAIL SERVER. Your Password was rejected. Account: 'mail.feathervillemall.com', Server: 'mail.feathervillemall.com', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR Unable to log on', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error NUMBER: 0x800CCC92

How do I correct this? Why do you have an email account for feathervillemall setup? feathervillemall.com is a SHOPPING SITE, not an ISP (Internet Service Provider). I see no info whatsoever on their site about providing email service.

If that's a legitimate email account, where do you go on the Internet to get setup info for their email accounts?

Solve : XP Help?

Answer»

I have an Intel motherboard, DP35DPM, and I had heard that Intel has detailed INSTRUCTIONS on their WEBSITE for a SLIPSTREAMING method to integrate drivers and Windows updates onto the install CD for XP, particularly for SATA/Raid install. It SAYS "DVD Upgrade, version 2002, also says this program will search your system to confirm your eligibility for this upgrage edition". And " do not make illegal copies of this disc"An upgrade disk cannot be used to install XP onto a blank hard drive. The installer looks for a qualifying product and if it does not find one, HALTS with an error message.

Here are the POSSIBLE upgrade paths

You do not say if the upgrade disk is XP Home or XP Pro, so I show both

Solve : No Internet?

Answer»

My Daughter was on my computer yesterday without asking me and now I am having a problem with my internet browser. When I try to go to the internet is states that internet explorer can not display the web page. I have already checked to make sure I have a internet connection through a command prompt and I do. Is there maybe something else like my firewall setting that is preventing me from accessing the internet? Please help me. Thanks! How old is your daughter? Is she old enough/computer literate enough to purposefully mess things up? Do you know what she did while she was on the computer?she is 11 and I DONT think she would have did anything on purpose. Any IdeasQuote

Do you know what she did while she was on the computer?

For instance, did she RUN into any problems? Did she try to "fix" said problems by changing settings? Did she download anything unusual or suspicious?

Here's an idea: try downloading a different browser (I personally like Firefox) and see if you can ACCESS web pages with it. This will determine whether-or-not the problem is with IE itself, or if the problem is has a broader origin. (If you don't want to keep the second browser on your computer, you can easily enough uninstall it.)What is the version of your internet explorer?
Version 7How do I download Firefox with no internet?
How are you posting without internet? Just use whatever computer you are on to make disk with the install file on it, or if that's not a possibility DUE to restrictions on that computer, have a FRIEND make for you said disk. ok, how about try to reset the setting of your internet explorer of the computer that is having the problem.

note: this will be applied if the version of the internet explorer on that computer (that has the internet problem) is also version 7

WARNING: THIS WILL DELETE COOKIES , PASSWORD, HISTORY AND WILL DISABLE TOOLBARS ON INTERNET EXPLORER.

before doing this procedure, make sure that internet explorer is closed

1. open control pannel
2. find and open internet option
3.click the advanced
4.click the "reset" button
5.click ok

then restart the computer, then open internet explorer, then check if the problem still persists.

3. Post new HijackThis log. Thanks for your help, as I am a beginner to all this. I downloaded Super antispyware. When I try to run it, it tells me the system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation. How do I adjust settings to allow it to run as I am running under system administrator. Try this...
Hold down the Shift key and right-click the downloaded file.
You'll see a menu, from which you can select Run as... and then choose Administrator account.I get "this service cannot be started in safe mode"Are you in Safe Mode? Why?It is the only way I can get on. When I try to start in Normal, the system freezes when it is loading personal settings.I can't see anything dangerous in HJT log from Safe Mode. Most likely, there is something else, then an infection.
Did you try System Restore?
I'm moving this topic to Windows section.Tried a system restore, still will not load in normal mode. System just freezes up when loading settings. Get UltimateBootCD, and test your RAM, and hard drive.

Solve : Can not boot to MS-DOS?

Dell Computer/ Intel(r)Celeron(tm)Processor. RAM 256 MB.Operating System: Windows ME
When I attempt to run Scandisk or to DeFrag the hard drive (Local Disk C) I get a message that the drive has been locked by a disk utility, but there are no programs running. I have attempted to perform this in Safe Mode but to no avail. From some solutions that I have found it seems that the file allocation table is damaged and needs to be repaired. To do this the computer needs to be run in DOS, using the emergency Boot Disk. ME should be able to generate a disk but is unable to do so stating that the files cannot be found. I have also downloaded some Disks but can only get a normal boot after inserting them. I would appreciate any help oldcousin.

Conclusion:
The ORIGINAL problem was that scandisk nor defrag would perform, sending an error message that the drive was locked out by a disk utility
I will close this post out by listing chronologically the actions that have been taken to alleviate this condition and where it now stands.
The 1st 4 did not have positive results and the 5th is not applicable, but the 6th did give positive results.
1. Ended tasks on all programs running in the background.
2. Attempted to run scandisk and defrag in SAFE MODE.
3. Restored system to a date prior to the start of the problem.
4. Booted up DOS and ran scandisk but no problems were found in any of the AREAS covered.
5. It was possible that Norton Speed Disk might be the problem but it is not in the computer.
6. Some TIME ago I checked (disabled) the startup of scandisk at improper shutdown. START/RUN/TYPE MSCONFIG/ click OK/ Click Advanced on general Menu/ Scandisk is 7th check block from top. So now I unchecked (enabled) scandisk and re-started. When Windows loaded back I manually turned off the computer (improper shutdown) then when I started up, the scandisk checked the drive, found errors and fixed them. I then ran defrag, and a thorough scan without a hitch. I hope this helps someone that might be experiencing these problems. (oldcousin)

Solve : Need to free up space on 'C', can I delete these files??

Answer»

I NEED more room on my C drive, photoshop and some recent additions have taken up room on C even though I install them to D. There are a bunch of folders in my Windows folder named like this - C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB923689$ - and many more, in total up to almost a GB of space taken up... can I delete them? Are they old hanger ons from SP installs? They are full of mainly dll's.

Can I delete anything else Windows MIGHT save on my behalf? I run Window Washer and CCleaner regularly.

Any bug-free programs that forum users would recommend to free up more space apart from doing the obvious (DELETING programs I don't use, window washing and CCleaning etc...) ?

cheers! Sorry... forgot to mention, I'm using XP with SP2, have about 400mB free on C (7gB total) but it doesn't handle photoshop well with that much free space. Each Windows Update creates an Uninstall folder on your system. If you are sure that you want to stick with your updates and security patches, you can remove them. You can use CCleaner for this.

Thanks for that... CCleaner didn't get RID of them, but I manually deleted them myself. Strange, I deleted 844mB worth of old update uninstall folders, but it only gave me an extra 400mB of space...! Thats after another CClean and window wash.

Is that usual?

c
Possibly if you have your virtual memory (swap file) size set to "managed by Windows", then what could have happened is that when Windows saw the newly freed 844 MB it grabbed some for itself. You do realise that 7 Gb is ridiculously small?
ouch... yes! It's personal!

No, seriously the next item on the to-fix list now the vidcard, chip and ram is so *censored* SWEET, is a new HD. 40gB with only 7gig for c, I know I know...

have enough free now, shifted some non-essential programs to D, deleted those old install folders and have 1.6 gb... enough for Photoshop to fry.

cheers for your help!

c

Pri Master Hard disk: S.M.A.R.T Status BAD, Backup and Replace
Press to Resume

is there any problem with my hard disk ?
is my hard disk at the verge of failure ?
is there any remedy for this problem ?
please help me out.
S.M.A.R.T. is the hard drive's own internal diagnostics tool. If it is telling you to backup and replace it is not a good sign.
I would do what it says and backup any important data immediately.
What is the make and model of the hard drive and how OLD is it?
To determine whether the hard drive is in fact failing, I recommend you test it with the diagnostics utility from the manufacturer of the hard drive.

thanks for ur response
will manufacture assist me on this regard as u've mentioned ?
because i had already replace my hard drive two years back.
it is samsung sata HD,is it YET in a warranty period ?
You will have to check with Samsung whether or not the drive is still under warranty. Depending on the model it may have up to a 5 year warranty.
You can test the HEALTH of your hard drive by downloading the diagnostics utility from Samsung.
Find your hard drive on the site below to download the utility.

i accidently pressed delete ( not shift+delete) on a file in a SHARED network FOLDER..

i then logged on ( remote desktop-ed) to the machine ( which has the shared folder) , with my USER account/pwd ( i.e. not administrator )... and i don't see the file in desktop->recycle bin

1. Local machine C:\names.txt

A. DDCD checked
Del ->Confirmation -> puts file in Recycle bin.

B. DDCD unchecked

Shift+del -> deletes file permanently

2. Shared folder \\shared\c$\names.txt

Solve : one last try?

Answer»

Hello all,

My computer is generating lot's of useless files all the time. The only way I stay above water is if I do a cleaning (I use CCleaner and Easy Cleaner) several times a day.

I've tried lot's of anti spy ware, done cleaning in Safe mode, but have never come up with anything to delete.

Just as an example, if I clean, on Easy Cleaner using the Unnecessary files thing, down to 4 files that cannot be cleaned -- then go on the internet for news and 10 minutes of Youtube -- when I run the cleaner again I have 300, 500 or more than a thousand files that need cleaning.

Is this just me? Or is there a problem? Forget GAMING, I lag-out right away...

Help!Welcome to the CH forums.

Please read this..

We need to know what firewall and anti-virus you have installed and the name(s) of some of the files you are deleting.

Thanks for the reply!

I have Norton security, both anti-virus and firewall.

Sorry, I'm such a noob that I'm not sure If there are additional firewalls...

Here are some examples of the files that appear:

Documentsandsettings¥(my name)localsettings¥temporaryinternetfiles¥content.IE5¥ONOANGGI

(SAME) ¥catbg1gif
(SAME) ¥chrank8lgif
(SAME) CJF66MDN¥desktop.ini
(SAME) ¥G69NOTAN¥chrank1[1].gif

I had 50 files like these in the time it took to go to my mailbox, click the link to read your post and return...

Hirose49What version of windows are you running? Also are you running IE 5?
Hi and thanks,

I have Windows XP and...

How do I find which IE I have?

...noobWhen the IE window is OPEN, click Help and then click About. This will display a small window which shows information on the version and release. Thanks!

I'm running IE6.0Catbg1.gif is mentioned here but what the connection to your pc is I haven't a clue.

I think your system is infected - one of our authorised malware removal team might drop in soon. If not suggest you repost in the Software - Computer Viruses and Spyware forum.

When you post don't forget to give some details of your pc, make/model and mention your OS and AV software.

Good luckOne more thing...is the path where the files are always this?

Documents and settings\my name\local settings\temporary internet files\content.IE5\ONOANGGI

Each time a user visits a website using Microsoft Internet Explorer, files downloaded with each web page (including html, images, Cascading Style Sheets and JavaScript scripts) are saved to the Temporary Internet Files folder, created a cache of the web page on the local computer's hard disk. The next time the user visits the cached website, only changed content needs to be downloaded from the Internet; the unchanged data is available in the cache.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temporary_Internet_Files

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/260897

You can go into the advanced settings for IE (tools...Internet Options and the advanced tab) and scroll to the bottom and look for acheck box that says

Empty Temporary Files when BROWSER is closed.

This will clear your cache each time you are done with the web. This system is all by design and working normally.

I'll do that,

Thanks!BUT,

this doesn't solve my problem. Still huge amounts of files generated EVEN after a VERY short time spent on the internet... while I get slower and slower...

Solve : error in kernel32.dll?

Answer»

i am using Windows ME

whenever i switched on my pc, i have an error message "winform has caused an error in kernel32.dll" "winform will now close", besides winform error, there are also numerous other errors like "upxdnd has ..." "motivedirectory has ..." , and so on...

besides that whenever i open any file (word, EXCEL, pdf etc), the system will just crash. for example when i open a pdf file, an error message will appear "acrord32 caused an invalid page fault in MODULE kernel32.dll at 018f:bff614ac".

attempts to open any other applications also failed, eg my anti-spyware also GAVE an error when i tried to open it. likewise for norton applications. in other words i am locked out from these. i can't install any registry solvers that i downloaded from the internet.

i tried to change the kernel32.dll name when in windows but the system does not allow me as it says "application is in use"

i tried to change the applog folder name (suggested in another forum) but it doesn't help too.

i tried to go to msconfig but the system just crashed if i do so...

can someone help me... thanks...Repair Install of WinME

You will need your Windows CD...thanks patio.

i have tried reinstalling the windows me recovery disk but faced the following problems.

a) when i use the "run" option or execute from folder, my pc will freeze and give me the blue screen

b) on the other hand, if i boot up with recovery disk in cd-rom drive, the support screen comes up but i am unable to use the keyboard and mouse (both usb) to make any selection.

Thanks. You need to borrow PS/2 keyboard, and mouse, and boot from CD.Is this a Windows ME CD or a manuf. Recovery CD from the maker ? ?
A recovery CD will wipe all your data and PROGRAMS and RETURN the machine to Day One status...

Solve : Computer locks up at random times?

Answer»

Hi EVERYONE,

I just bought a new computer the other day, and I am experiencing lock ups. I think it might be a memory problem, but cannot be SURE. The place where I bought it from (Cyperpower PC) “claims” to have 24/7 phone tech support, but I cannot get through to them at all this weekend. So, I thought I’d post here to see if anyone had any suggestions.

I have searched the forums for other postings about similar problems, but none of the posts I’ve read have lead me to a solution.

Here are the specs of the computer:

Motherboard: Asus P5N-E
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3.0Ghz
RAM: Corsair 2 GB (2 x 1 GB) PC6400 DDR2
HDD: 500 GB SATA II 7200 RPM
Power Supply: Sigma Shark 600 Watt
DVD: Sony 20x DVD+/-RW Dual Layer
Video Card: EVGA GeForce 9600GT 512MB PCI-E
Fans: 2 fan - 1 in back and 1 in side
Heatsink: CoolerMaster Hyper TX2
OS: Windows XP SP2 (I have run Windows Update and installed all updates)

Here’s a detailed explanation of what I’ve tried so far.

I got the computer without the OS installed, because I already own a legit copy of Win XP w/SP 2. I installed it with no problems. I installed my motherboard chipset drivers, and my onboard sound drive. No problems. Then I installed AVG Free Edition, and restarted the computer. No problems. I then installed Zone Alarm. It made me restart my computer, and when it booted back up, it would freeze up, just after the Zone Alarm icon showed up in the system tray. I went through a lengthy process of testing, and ultimately, when I uninstalled Zone Alarm, the freezing problem stopped.

I reformatted the hard drive, reinstalled Windows, and did a Windows Update first thing, installed my motherboard chipset and sound driver, and then installed Zone Alarm. It locked up again, but this time during Zone Alarm installation.

I had a hard time believing Zone Alarm was the culprit, because I’ve been using it for years on other computers with absolutely no problems. So, I decided to reformat the hard drive and reinstall Windows yet again. After that, I decided to test the memory, with the Ultimate Boot CD. I ran memtest86, and during Test #5, it locked up. I rebooted, and tried memtest86+. Again, it locked up during Test #5.

I ran Windows Memory Diagnostics, which is also on the Ultimate Boot CD. I let all of the tests finish one time, and there were no problems. (I have since run it a second time, and again with no problems.)

I decided to test each stick of RAM individually. I ran memtest86+ on each of them in two different RAM slots, and each time, they passed all of the tests. (I stopped it after one round of tests COMPLETED.)

I put both of the sticks of RAM back in, this time in different slots. Before they were in slot A-2 and B-2, and this time I tried them in A-1, and B-1. During Test #5, it locked up again. I tried them in A-1 and A-2. Same thing: lock-up during Test #5.

A friend suggested that I just keep installing my software, because he thought that maybe memtest86 was having a conflict with my system with 2 sticks of RAM in there. So, I decided to start installing my software again, but this time not putting Zone Alarm on there.

I started to install my sound driver, which I had successfully done twice before. This time, I got an error message saying the driver installation failed, and the computer locked up. I did a hard reboot, tried to install it again, and it worked fine.

Then I decided to GO forward with Windows Update. The first couple of rounds went fine. But the third time, as I clicked the maximize button on the IE 7 window, the computer locked up.

I downloaded MBM 5, Update 3, and installed the Core Temperature Monitor Plug-in ver 1.13. It is showing that both my CPU’s are at 43 degrees C. Both CPUs are running at 0% while idle. The one thing that might seem off is that Core 0 is listed at 1.52V, but Core 1 is listed at 3.34V. But I don’t know what they are supposed to be at.

I should note that MBM 5 does not list my motherboard as one of the ones it SUPPORTS, so I don’t know if I should even be running it or not.

Both of my case fans are running.

I have run out of ideas on what to try. I can’t get a hold of anyone at tech support, so I’m hoping someone here might have some ideas. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
I'd stop tinkering with your computer, and I'd take advantage of the warranty.
More playing around, and you may void the warranty.Good advice. That's what I did today. They swapped out the motherboard and memory, and all seems to be working fine now.
Good Luck. Happy gameJust wondering...do you have the manual for the MB?

Check it for a list of accepted RAM for the MB. I had the same thing happen with a ASUS motherboard and it was the ram wasn't on the list for that board. The RAM showed good with all the tests. I swapped it to one on the list and all was good.

Solve : Gateway Laptop OS restore problems?

Answer»

I'm TRYING to restore my granddaughters laptop which started having problems that did'nt seem to be viral in nature. The laptop has two partitions on the hard drive which include one with the recover files. when I used the built in recover, none destructive type, it had a problem reinstalling all the Gateway items, but had installed windows ok. After doing this twice I switched to the destructive type of recover and let it format the hard drive and reinstall everything. It still had problems. So I used the CD that came with the laptop and did another destructive recover, but ended up with a message instead of it LOADING windows when it starting, after what seemed like a good recover. The message it displays is, "Windows could not start because of an error in the SOFTWARE. Load needed for DLL's for kernel". OK, ive reached a point where i'm suspecting hard drive problems but not sure what to do next. Does anyone have any ideas? If so i'd be glad to hear them. And THANK You!Try the SOLUTION from the following link .... seemed to have worked for the guy who posted the procedures.

Solve : Removing Internat.exe?

Answer»

Can anyone tell me how I can get rid of internat.exe? Everytime I delete it, it keeps bringing itself back!Where is it from ? ?
Keep in mind when asking for help we can't SEE your machine from here...
The more details the better.internat.exe is installed with Windows and is a process to provide Microsoft's multi-lingual features in Microsoft Windows. This process puts the language selection icon in the traybar. This program is important for the stable and secure running of your computer and should not be terminated.

2. Note: internat.exe could also be also a process which is registered as the Win32.Lydra.a information stealing Trojan. This Trojan allows attackers to ACCESS your computer, personal data and information. This process is a security risk and should be removed from your system.

Determining whether internat.exe is a virus or a LEGITIMATE Windows process depends on the directory location it executes or runs from. Where are you removing it from?

If it is malware, I am not allowed to advise you. Please ask in malware section.
It's in the "System" folder. What "system" folder? Do you mean C:\Windows\System ?

Are you running Windows 98?

No, just "System". I would've put "System32" if that's what it was in.

And I'm using Windows ME.The malware file resides in the Windows folder.

The genuine Microsoft internat.exe provides support for Microsoft multi-lingual features and resides in the System folder (w98,98se,ME)
You can go to Start/Run and type in msconfig and hit Enter...under the "Startup" tab see if it is LISTED there...if so un-check it and re-boot.
This will prevent it from loading on startup without removing it.It isn't in the startup. Why do you want to remove it?
That's THE question...I'm thinking dental right about now...As always, you're right ....hmmm...let's say, in all dental cases....LOL

Solve : Mouse and keyboard stopped working. Need Help!!?

Answer» HOPEFULLY, someone can answer this question, as I've had no luck so far.

Some specifics first:
* I have a Dell Dimension 4550
* Windows XP
* Microsoft Wireless Laser Desktop 4000 (Wireless keyboard and mouse)

The problem is that I had to reboot my computer after a software update. Unfortunately, it was at this point that my keyboard and mouse stopped working.

Some solutions that I tried:
* Rebooting the computer
* Shutting down the computer, unplugging the wireless receiver and plugging in a PS/2 mouse and keyboard.
* Taking apart the computer to blow the dust out of the inside
* Starting the computer in safe mode. The keyboard works until I get to this screen:
http://pcsupport.about.com/od/fixtheproblem/ss/safemodecpxp_4.htm
* Reinstalling Windows isn't possible because the mouse and keyboard don't work

Any other suggestions would be appreciated. I'm kind of at a loss and I haven't found an answer anywhere else. What software update ? ?
Do you have SP2 installed ?
Was there no response from the PS2 devices ? ?Quote from: patio on April 15, 2008, 09:35:48 AM
What software update ? ?
Do you have SP2 installed ?
Was there no response from the PS2 devices ? ?

My Road Runner Medic. I had to reset my network settings DUE to problems with the connection.

No response from the PS2 devices, as I said before the keyboard works (I can HIT F8, F2 and F12) until I get to the Windows startup screen and then everything freezes again.

The computer is set for Automatic Updates, so I think that SP2 is installed.
UPDATE:

I had to reinstall Windows XP from the BOOT menu (F12). Not the best solution, but at least the mouse and keyboard work now. There's no reason a PS2 mouse/keyboard will not work on a bootable machine other than severe hardware problems so your replies threw me for a loop....
Good to hear you are fixed up though.

Solve : Registry help plz?

Answer»

I need the default registry values for the FOLLOWING files.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\DefaultPassword
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\DefaultUserName
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\ForceAutoLogon

Here's how that stuff got changed:
I had a program that let me automatically login to my username, but I uninstalled it. But the registry wasn't changed back, so I keep getting an annoying popup saying that the password cannot be found, but I can click OK and the REGULAR login screen comes up and WORKS perfectly. I've tried System Restore, but that doesn't work. WHAT DO I DO?!?!?!This is on Windows XP SP2.Is this your system ?
How did you lose your Admin password?
What program did you RUN to automatilly logon ?

We cannot assist with password recovery on a soft excuse such as a registry entry....
But nice try.I USED StyleXP, which I now regret. This is my system, but I lost the admin password because it wouldn't let me change back.Boot into safe mode by tapping F8 rapidly as the machine is powering up and before you see the Windows logo...
Try changing the Admin password there.
If it won't allow you from there i'm afraid we can assist no further.

Solve : Duplicate "Administrator" Folder?

Answer»

I've been using a WINDOWS 2000 machine for several YEARS. But when I booted it up this week, it behaved as if I were starting it for the first time. It asked me to SIGN in, and then showed a Windows intro TUTORIAL. When I tried to use Internet Explorer or Outlook Express, it asked me to establish an internet account, as if I'd never been on the internet before. And most frightening, My Documents was empty!

I feared a virus, but McAfee Security found no virus. (I maintain a McAfee Firewall, and virus protection, and run a virus scan every week.)

It turned out that all my files were still present. In the Documents and Settings folder on my hard drive, I found two Administrator folders. One, named simply Administrator, has a My Documents folder containing all my old files. The other, named Administrator DFL22D31, is the one the system is now using. (I saved something to My Documents, and it APPEARS in this second Administrator folder.)

How did the second Administrator folder get created, and how can I get Windows to revert to using the settings it has always used before?

Thank you,

Solve : Helpctre.exe error?

Answer»

Hello

Recently I have been receiving errors like "helpctre.exe failed to initialize, the application failed to initialize properly(0x000012d)" previously, everytime i open an application the help window of that application always pop out, and evertime you close the help window, it regenerates more than 3 times opening and popping out . This keeps the system from hanging. After few weeks, when you boot you computer, the same ERROR comes up and your system already hangs. the only catch is that there is always an activity on your hard disk as you can see it on it hard drive led of the laptop.

I ANTIVIRUS and antispyware, it FOUND problems and had deleted it. That is why I decided to reformat my hard drive and reinstall windows xp.. Solve : msconfig startup problem?

Answer»

This problem began while playing Oblivion - a game that has caused me numerous PC troubles.

I was having problems with the game and the advice that they sent was quite extensive. Erasing temp FILES, ETC. One change was to cut out all startup files on msconfig.

Well since that time, I have been unable to bring them back. I don't load everything, only selected programs like antivirus. When I APPLY them and reboot, nothing loads.

I'm thinking that the General tab of msconfig is probably at fault here but I don't know which options I chose before. What I have selected now is SELECTIVE Startup and then every option under that.

Am I right in thinking that the problem is here or is it deeper than that?Click on the Startup tag and see which items are ticked.

You should actually use services.msc when doing this...
Another very good option for this type of setup is to create a new Hardware Profile...
The advantage of this is you are not changing your main Windows setup.
It will present you with the 2 choices at setup.
Therefore when finished gaming you simply end the game;re-boot and choose your original Hardware Profile and you're back into your original Windows setup.
I'm suprised the Oblivion instructions didn't include this...You should actually use services.msc when doing this...

Solve : How to re-enable Task manager??

Answer»

I can't access my task manager. It says it was DISABLED by the administrator, but I'm the only one who uses this computer and I didn't disable it. I'm assuming I am the administrator because it says I'm logged in as that, but I'm not sure...As PART of the enhanced management available in Windows 2000 and Windows XP, rather than risking a registry change, as an administrator you can enable or disable Windows 2000 Pro or Windows XP Pro's TaskManager using Group Policy Editor. This can be applied to the local policy. Note: if you are TRYING to override your organizations group policy, you can't. As soon as you re-authenticate to the domain, the domain or OU Group Policy will rewrite the registry setting. But if the TaskManager was accidently disabled or you need to control this item for a set of standalone boxes this is for you:

* Click Start
* Click Run
* Enter gpedit.msc in the Open box and click OK
* In the Group Policy SETTINGS window
o Select User Configuration
o Select Administrative Templates
o Select System
o Select Ctrl+Alt+Delete options
o Select Remove Task Manager
o Double-click the Remove Task Manager OPTION

And as I mentioned above, since the policy is Remove Task Manager, by disabling the policy, you are enabling the Task Manager.

Got XP Home - use the registry edit.

give that a shot, it worked when i had that errorGroup Policy Editor? I don't have an organization, and what's a domain? This is my home computer, and I have Windows XP home. No offense, but you might as well be typing in French, because I don't understand...

I don't have a group policy setting window when I ran gpedit.mscok this is much simpler

just get this program from this site

(click the download link bout 1/2way down the page)

it will fix it for you.

Solve : please help cant boot from cd drive?

Answer»

i got a hp pavilion 4450 pc from a friend and put it together.i erased the hard drive and tried to start it. it went to a screen that said
F1 for setup F2 to resume i hit F2 there was a blinking line then it said "operating system not found".i dont know how to boot from disk drive and i have the windows xp home and the pro edition WHAT DO I DO!?!?!?!?!?!?PRESS the F1 KEY. It should take you to the PC BIOS. If not, see what other keys are available to you that say something about "setup". Once in BIOS, you'll have to SEARCH your way to FIND "boot devices" or "boot order" or something with "boot". You need to tell it to boot from the CD-ROM first instead of the hard drive. Once you make that change, make sure to "save & exit" from the BIOS. Before doing this, insert your cd and then exit the BIOS. You should now be able to boot from the CD or you will see a message that says "press any key to boot from cd". Remember, once you run through the first part of the setup, you'll need to change the boot order back to the hard drive and take out the CD.

Solve : problem with task manager?

Answer»

Hello,
I am using a gateway desktop with windows xp sp2, and am the administrator of the computer. when I pres CTRL+Alt+Delete, the task manager pops up, but not in its full form. It only gives me the ability to see what programs are currently running and gives me the option to { End Task } {Switch To} and { New Task}. Normaly when you run the task manager, it also allows you to end processes and veiw the computers preformance. I have some how contracted a program known as Malware Bell. I have instructions on how to remove it but it requires the {End PROCESS} FUNCTION in the task manager. can anyone tell me how to full restore the task manager. I have also seen that the tast manager can become completely disabled by viruses, but I don't believe that is the issue.

hey there,

Try using security task manager to close what you need to
download it here http://www.neuber.biz/download/taskmanager17.exe
Goodluck

KurtisClick inside a blank area of the minimised Task Manager window...Unless you are on a Domain hitting CTRL+Alt+Delete will always bring up the task manager. This is normal. When you use a stand alone machine and you want to lock it you have to hit the "Windows+L" keys.

thanks guys, the security task manager did help me delete the virus, clicking on a blank spot of the task manager didnt do anything and (windos+L) logged me off. the virus is gone but I would like to have my task manager back if anyone knows how to change it back!We BETTER make sure, your computer is clean, first...
