Solve : Blue Screen of Death... help?? |
|
Answer» Hey guys, I'm Dave. I'm running a custom built computer with the following: Also, I searched some probabilites that it might be the RAM... is that a common cause?Yes, bad ram can cause crashes. Heres a memory tester program to try- http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=350 Quote- MemTest is a RAM reliability tester. It evaluates the ability of your computer's memory to store and retrieve data accurately. A correctly functioning computer should be able to do both these tasks with 100% accuracy day in and day out. A computer that fails these tests, perhaps because of old hardware, damaged hardware, or poorly configured hardware, will be less stable and crash more often. Even worse, it will become even less stable over time as corrupted data is written to your hard disk. By running MemTest you can ensure that your computer's RAM is correctly functioning. It is wise to test this when you buy a new computer, install new ram, or change the configuration of your machine (for instance, to overclock it). If you are the sort of user who likes to push the performance of your machine to the edge, relying upon whether your machine will boot after your new BIOS TWEAKS is a poor way to determine the safety of your new settings. Use MemTest as a true test of stability. Limitations: The Pro version is also a Windows native program, and similar to the normal version. It is tuned, however, to the needs of users who diagnose the quality of ram often, or on multiple machines. It offers options LIKE a nice mode which allows you to test RAM in the background, during normal use of the machine, as well as more detailed reporting of errors. It also does not pause every time an error is found, so it can be used to determine the overall reliability of ram that is prone to errors, rather than just as a tool that determines if there are any errors at all. im now running memtest and it came up with an error after 10 percent but its still goin... right after d/l memtest my computer crashed again and BSOD'd with the message DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL do interrupt codes have anything to do with the RAM?I dont KNOW, we will need to wait for one of the moderators to answer that. The memory test however should be error free, I can run the test forever without errors on my Kingston DDR3200 1Gig stick.well, so far its just that one, but yea as i suspected there's probably something wrong with the RAM in addition to whatever else could be the problem... hopefully a moderator can help me out here sometime soon... but the weird thing is that it seemed to be working for the last year and a half ive had it... every time i had a problem id be able to fix it by reformatting the drives and reinstalling windows, but new problems would come along every couple of months...well, i guess im gonna run it again and let it run all night, and before i do that, im gonna disable all my startup processes and reboot the computer so the least RAM is being used... well thanks for the advice thus far, and if anyone else is able to help any more, plz, it would be greatly appreciated... :-?Have you tried Microsofts debugging tools? :-? http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/devtools/debugging/installx86.mspxI had similar problem. I actually fixed it by uninstalling a nvidia driver from add/remove programs. Not sure what it was called, network access manager or something. I mean the nforce motherboard drivers, rather than graphics ones, if you use nforce. Or try this http://forums.nvidia.com/lofiversion/index.php?t6174.html I'm not sure if this will fix all your problems though, but it might eliminate one A $1000 machine without a $10 floppy drive? Anyway the RAM should be tested one stick at a time, then all together for at least 30 min each. Free hard drive diagnostics are available at the appropriate drive maker's site. Has any part of this system been overclocked at any time?no, it hasnt, and it was 4000 dollars altogether when i was puttin it together, since it was all brand new technology, lol.this is really startin to piss me off lolyour ram may be dead!Good for him to know that since he hasn't returned in over a year... |

Solve : Newly Built Computer with XP...How to setup initial INternet Connection?? |
|
Answer» I did try googling the motherboard. Only thing is I don't have vista, and those on that link who had troubles, all had vista. I have XP. The only DRIVER update I found on the gigabyte website was for Lan Driver. THis did not fix my PROBLEM. How do I get the Network Device Driver for this mobo? are all the yellow ? cleaned up in device manager yet... Nope I still have yellow ?'s on "Mass Storage Controller" under "other devices" My Ethernet jack on the motherboard still does not function at all, nor is it recognized. i just installed the PCI Ethernet card from my other computer, and it works perfectly. I guess I will figure this out later, but now I'm intrigued by why I have a "Mass Storage Controller" that is YELLOW ?'d.Still stuck with the same problems. MY internet now works, but only because I installed a new ethernet card. The ethernet on my mobo does not work. And, how do I get rid of the "Mass Storage Controller" that shows up under Device Manager. with Yellow ?'s by it? I have nothing plugged into my computer, and I don't know why It keeps telling me to install software for this "Mass Storage Controller" ANy ideas would be very helpful. Thanks. -MattSounds like you may need to RMA the board. Any other ideas on how to get rid of the Yellow Question Marks? I really don't want to have to disassemble the entire computer that took me such a long time to build. and then send the mobo back and be without a computer for an extended period of time. Especially since, everything else works great on it, except for the Unidentified "Mass Storage Device" . What would you guys do, if your computer had been running perfect for a year, and then suddenly you developed this problem of "Mass storage device" showing up with a yellow question mark? thanks.Quote from: mattman18t on December 12, 2008, 02:42:08 PM What would you guys do, if your computer had been running perfect for a year, and then suddenly you developed this problem of "Mass storage device" showing up with a yellow question mark? I would conclude, if I had done all of the things that you have done, that maybe the HDD controller chipset on the motherboard may be going flaky. However... this is what you posted at the start of this thread: Quote I have been battling off and on all week with my newly built computer, So you have a warranty, if you were being truthful. Quote I really don't want to have to disassemble the entire computer that took me such a long time to build. and then send the mobo back and be without a computer for an extended period of time. Especially since, everything else works great on it You are being really, really foolish. (I am being polite here!) If you have a substandard new motherboard, return it! Otherwise, later on, if the rest of the board FAILS, you may be without a computer for an even more "extended period of time", until you raise the money to replace your now out of warranty motherboard! I just can't believe that there is NO WAY TO DIAGNOSE THIS. If you guys say there is no way, then I believe you, but it's still tough to swallow, that of all the BIOS and troubleshooting, that the only answer is to RMA the motherboard. It seems like the only problem, is that it is detecting a piece of hardware. There should be a way to make it ignore said hardware, correct? You obviously know more than I do about this "DIAS" . Just seems like there has to be another solution. WOuldn't the BIOS have show something if it was the HDD on the motherboard? |

Solve : HELP! Windows XP Boots, still runs, but no display? |
|
Answer» PLEASE help me. My windows XP emachine boots, but immediately after BOOTING my monitor stops detecting signal and turns off. The OS however is still running. I can log in and control the desktop with my keyboard, but my monitor will not display anything. I tried my monitor on a working computer and it worked fine. When I boot into safe mode, the screen displays fine, except EVERYTHING is enlarged quite a bit and some program windows will not fit on the screen. Please help me!when did this start to happen? did you upgrade any display driver or installed a new display card? what type of display card was it if so, PCI, AGP or pci EXPRESS? your spec of your PC would be nice. RAM, displaycard, cpu.. ect,ect spider What do you mean by "I can log in and control the desktop with my keyboard, but my monitor will not display anything"? If your monitor doesn't display anything, how do you know what is happening? Do you mean that it goes blank after you log in?Have you booted in safe mode and chose'Last Known Good Configuration? You can also restore your computer to an earlier date when it worked properly by using safemode where everything is enlarged. In safemode go to start, programs accessories, system tools, then system restore where you choose an earlier date before your problem OCCURED. |

So, is there a way to keep the old OS and just repair it with no XP disks? Like I stated in the 1st post they were lost? Or Windows PE 2.1: Info http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Preinstallation_Environment Required WAIK if you don't have a Vista disc to make PE out of: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=C7D4BC6D-15F3-4284-9123-679830D629F2&displaylang=en Instructions for creation: http://www.msfn.org/board/lofiversion/index.php/t83722.html From the PE environment, cd to the i386 folder and find winnt32.exe (winnt.exe won't work--PE is a 32-bit enviroment and has no 16-bit emulation to run winnt.exe, a 16-bit executable).Quote from: killerb255 on December 06, 2008, 08:42:56 PM Quote from: fgdn17 on December 06, 2008, 10:38:26 AMQuote from: BC_Programmer on December 05, 2008, 05:09:37 PMQuote from: fgdn17 on December 05, 2008, 12:12:19 PMQuote from: chad c on December 05, 2008, 12:03:52 PMOKay that was easy.... So, is there a way to keep the old OS and just repair it with no XP disks? Like I stated in the 1st post they were lost? also a BARTPE here: http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/ He doesn't have an XP CD and the Vista is liscensed to another machine so i don't understand where this is going.... He can borrow an XP CD to re-install provided the other machine is legit...The idea is to get to the i386 folder on his machine (which has the Windows XP source FILES on it). PE discs (Bart, Win, etc.) allow this. From there, he can run winnt32.exe and start a repair-install from it. No need for an XP disc this way and it's legal because: 1) Win PE 2.1 is free, provided that the user makes their own disc using the WAIK or a Vista disc (the WAIK in this case). Distributing a Win PE 2.1 pre-made ISO, on the other hand, is against the EULA. 2) Many manufacturers of factory-built machines (not all, but many) stick the XP source files in an i386 folder. I use PE all the time to do unattended installs of Windows XP from a network share. Starting it locally shouldn't be any different in this case--in fact, it would be treated like an in-place upgrade.Got it.OKay I looked on the comp and I found the I386 folder... Now what is the process from there? Remember to you some of this is like riding a bike.. To me its like speaking Korean.. SO please if someone could do a step by step. I know its ALOT to ask but it would be helpful.. Thanks ChadOpen up the i386 folder you found. Double-click on winnt32.exe. That'll start the install (repair).KillerB: Found the file, and clicked on it. Came back with a Error of 1722. Problem with installer package? any more Ideas? Thanks ChadOne of two things: 1) That file is corrupt (and most likely the rest of the i386 directory you found). or 2) You're running that winnt32 from an environment that doesn't support it (DOS, 64-bit WinPE). I'm thinking #1 myself, since you're not "double-clicking" anything in DOS, and it's unlikely that you're using 64-bit PE. If you're running it from inside Windows XP, it should work for an in-place upgrade, but since it's not...definitely #1. In that case, we could rewind back to Patio's suggestion and borrow Windows XP OEM disc from someone to do your repair-install... However, after re-reading the thread (which I should have done earlier...DOH!), given the following: 1) The machine has a virus 2) You do not have an XP disc. 3) The i386 folder is accessible, but it may be corrupt. 4) We don't know if your machine has IE7 or WMP11 on it. Repair install = BAAAAAAD idea. Repair-installing a system that's infected with a virus is just asking for trouble (as someone said earlier). Same goes for repair-installing a system with IE7 or WMP11 on it without uninstalling the two first. So, keeping that in mind (and knowing that you already backed up your data), you will need to do one of these three options: 1) Borrow a Windows XP OEM disc from someone. See attachments for what the Home Edition and the Professional Edition OEM discs look like. Follow these instructions to install XP: http://tweakhound.com/xp/installxp/installXP1.htm Use the product key AFFIXED to the side of your computer when asked for one. Again, check attachments to see what it looks like (the attachment itself DOES NOT have a product key on it!) 2) Purchase an XP OEM disc. Places like Newegg and Tigerdirect sell them, as well as local computer stores. Use instructions in Step #1 for installing XP. It will come with its own product key, so use that instead of the sticker on the PC. 3) Purchase a Vista OEM disc if your computer can handle it. I would only advise this suggestion if your computer has the following: - AT LEAST 2 GB of RAM. - AT LEAST an 80 GB hard drive. Yes, I know it'll work with a smaller one, but Vista alone takes up 15-20 GB on install...you want room for other stuff, don't you? - AT LEAST a late Pentium 4, Pentium D, AMD Athlon 64 X2, or similar dual-core processor. If in doubt, stick with XP on this machine... [Saving space - attachment deleted by admin] |

Answer» i have configure a dual boot system CONSISTING of windows 98 in FAT 32 partition and windows xp using NTFS partition, i check my windows xp installation and it look good, however when i boot to windows 98 i cannot see the files in the NTFS partition.what might the source of the problem? then i want to set up a dual boot senario between xp and 98 how would i do this? Didn't you already do this? LET's get this straight. 1) When you start up your computer, do you get two choices on the screen: "Windows XP Professional Edition" "Windows 98" (or something like that)? Yes No If Yes, then I have no idea why you asked this question. That's like asking "How do I ride a bike" while you're riding it!!!! 2) Windows 98 CANNOT READ NTFS!!! What this means is when you boot to your Windows 98 operating system, you CANNOT CANNOT CANNOT see what's on your Windows XP partition! Windows 98 = FAT or FAT32 partitions only. Can't read anything else. Windows XP = FAT, FAT32, and NTFS. That's why XP can read your 98 stuff, but 98 can't read your XP stuff. To fix this problem, you should have formatted your XP partition in FAT32. That way, 98 could see your XP stuff. NTFS is GREEK to Windows 98. It's like someone trying to speak Spanish, French, or German to you*!!! *: unless you happen to know Spanish, French, or German, of course. So, in this order: 1) Backup your data. 2) Create two FAT32 partitions. 3) Install Windows 98 first. 4) Install Windows XP second. DO NOT convert to NTFS! |

Solve : Unable to use hotmail, cpu usage jumps to 100%? |
|
Answer» For the past couple of weeks I have been unable to check my hotmail accounts on my home computer. The hotmail accounts themselves are fine as I have checked them from other places. I am otherwise able to surf the net normally (or as normally as you can with dial-up lol), the only thing I cant view is my hotmail inbox. Hovering over the task bar icon in the notification tray is a waste of time. All it tells you is CPU Usage. He did say he opened Task Manager. My bad. BUT what good has that done ? We still do not know what took 100%. I have seen 98% usage by my antivirus getting its teeth into something, I have see my Firewall using all the resources to keep something at bay. NB I have never seen anything, including dumpreg, use 100%, there has always been at least 1% taken by Task Manager to show who uses what. Regards Alan Having had IE now and again all but lock up with a SITE - seemingly some response to a page coding - I wonder if you can get round this by using Firefox .... just to see.?Thanks for the response so far. I am OPENING task manager to view the usage and it is ieexplore that jumps to 100% when I try to open hotmail and then dumprep.exe when I try to close it down. It only does it trying to access hotmail no other site. I will load firefox and try that. |

Solve : Windows XP Upgrade Adviser.? |
|
Answer» Hi, Note Windows XP Setup automatically runs the Upgrade Advisor tool when you upgrade from a previous Windows operating system to Windows XP. You can also run the Upgrade Advisor tool MANUALLY by clicking Check System Compatibility on the WELCOME to Microsoft Windows XP page that appears after you insert your Windows XP CD-ROM into your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. Also, you can GO ahead and run your system specs by us and we can tell you whether or not XP will run smoothly on the machine or not. (such information include RAM, Processor Speed, Hard Drive Capacity, Hard Drive Free Space and Graphics Card) EDIT: Found this too: http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sg_ua.aspAh!!!! Thanks Remember, try to get your computer to conform with the recommended specifications or better....means, whatever M$ says, multiply by at least 2.I thought that I would report back that the upgrade went very smoothly. The user now has an xp PC to play with. Thanks for all your help! It is always appreciated. All right, good job. Nice |

Solve : My Welcome Screen is Disabled? |
|
Answer» I have a Dell with Windows XP Professional, Version 2002, and Service Pack 2 on it. I bought it secondhand, they had wiped everything off and then reinstalled Windows XP on it. (I don't know how much difference that will make.) No registry editing needed (your second link, Dusty). Yep, that's exactly wot is SAID on the linked site, a regedit it's just given as an option. Quote from: linked site Note: To disable the Welcome screen you can also open the Registry editor and go to... etc Apart from that, the first choice on the linked site is to do presactly what you also posted. Here's a verbatim quote from the linked site: Quote 1. Open User Accounts in Control Panel. And from you: Quote Just go to Control Panel --> User Accounts --> Change the way users log on or off. Looks kinda similar... What more could be asked for Two minds with just a single thought. Oh wow, It appears I wasn't reading carefully..........or at all.... Sorry, Dusty. No apology necessary, just an extra special donation when next you visit the Buddha at the Po Lin Monastery, Lantau Island. LOL Lol, haven't been there for a loooong time. Anyways, -500 points for me for not reading properly and +500 points for you for providing two good links. Sorry, I tried that before and just forgot to mention it. Nothing happends. It still makes me type in all the info. As a matter of fact when I go to it, the options are still selected. (And have been applied) Would the registry thing work, and is there a chance I could accedentally mess up my computer?Quote from: mysticdreams73 on December 10, 2008, 02:56:01 PM Would the registry thing work, and is there a chance I could accedentally mess up my computer? The registry 'thing' might work and yes, you could accidentally cripple your system during a regedit. Regedits have been known to cause mayhem and should never be undertaken unless the user has backed up the registry and knows how to reinstate the backup copy if things do go wrong. Check your keyboard ENTRIES and you should be good to go. Good luck |

Solve : Follow up to my thread from yesterday. Complete error message inside? |
|
Answer» Here's the messages I get on my computer before it keeps rebooting to the PF8 screen: Sounds like you have a corrupted registry. This may be because of a power failure while the registry was being updated, or an improper shutdown (e.g. somebody just pulled the plug) or possibly the beginnings of hard drive failure. Thanks or your help! |

Solve : does my pc have info about every time i used it?? |
|
Answer» A website of mine was HACKED into last month, and I SUSPECT a certain person of doing it from my computer. If I can somehow find a record - a log - of all the dates and times on which my computer was logged onto, I could confirm or dispel my suspicions regarding this person. try event viewer, then select system...scroll to the right and it should be there... the "eventlog" events will provide when the computer was BOOTED, and I believe winlogon keeps track of logons log-offs. Solve : I cant retrieve the previous Administrator's Password? |

Answer» I purchased a Dell pc system (with monitor, keyboard, mouse and speakers) from a law firm the was going out of business, and placed it in storage for a few months. I recently tried to use it for the first time, and discovered that it is still set up with the company's administrative rights and limitations. I managed to get past the username and PASSWORD part, but once logged onto the home screen, I cannot go to Enternet Explorer, make any changes to the system or anything else because it tells me that I need administrative rights / password, and that is impossible to retieve! Someone told me to try and re-install the Windows XP, but when I tried to un-install Windows, it said Windows was successfully un-installed, but it was NOT. Im so frustrated!! I cant go to the company for help because they have since closed the firm for good. Also when I restart the pc, it BEGINS loading from the WINDOWS page (with the blue dots going across the bottom) so I cant access the option to start Windows in SAFE MODE. Solve : Laptop very, very, very slow!? |

Answer» Hi, When Mods reply, they go from the oldest posts to the newest post. You have just bumped your post putting it bottom of the pile again.Actually not the case as far as I am aware, except for Malware Specialists in the malware forum. mahathev, I think the reason you haven't got any replies is partly the massive amoutn of text with no paragraphs. Also, consider that people may not know the answer - I certainly don't. Please do remember that we are volunteers.Ever thought of getting the laptop looked at by IT specialists? For example if you live in the UK you will be familiar with PC World, they have a technical area in every store where somebody will take a look at your laptop. If that fails then I would suggest buying a new hard drive, if that fails, I would suggest a replacement laptop. It must be a hardware issue because formating the HDD would remove software issues. Regards, JacobI strongly advise against going anywhere near PC World. Their work is shoddy and they overcharge for everything. I agree however that takign it to a computer shop might be an idea if no one here has any ideas.Quote from: Calum on December 03, 2008, 11:36:16 AM I strongly advise against going anywhere near PC World.Fairly true, a family run bussiness may be better, but may lack expertise. But i'd rather be overcharged and have fixed the problem.I'd fix it myself, but that's beside the point. Regarding PC World, their work is amongst the worst I've seen, rivalled only by Packard Bell in my experience. Example: my uncle bought a laptop from there. The thermal paste was wrongly applied, so the CPU was overheating, one of the RAM modules came loose, the HDD wasn't plugged in properly, and they pulled a fast one by swapping the CPU for a much older model during one of the many times he took it in for repairs. Their customer service is just depressing too. I could trot out some more examples, but that was enough for me. With the prices they're charging too I'd expect a solid gold computer. You may have had good experiences, I'll steer well clear myself and would pass on that advice to anyone gladly if it will SAVE them the pain my uncle went through.Quote from: Calum on December 03, 2008, 11:47:12 AM I'd fix it myself, but that's beside the point. In that case so will I, I have no experience with their services first hand. Thanks for the heads up, If I do have any technical issues, I won't be going there, thanks.I am deeply sorry Reddevilggg, now I know how this forum is handled. In Malaysia we do not have PC World, but I will now take the laptop to a specialist to check for me and will take it on from there. I agree with Calum - should have worded text neatly. Thanks Jacob for your views. Thanks Guys - my sincere apology to everyone. It's O.K, hope you get your computer fixed. But always remember to ask here first. If anybody here has knowledge of your problem, we will be only to pleased to help and we could save you some money. See you in the future P.S you could take it to a specialist, then tell us what the specialist says and ask for advice again, before you hand over money to him. Good Luck |

Solve : recovery software? |
|
Answer» Was wondering if anyone knew any GOOD RECOVERY software that would tackle every ANGLE that I would need it for, from recovering music to pictures to Hardware issues. And if anyone knows of a FREE recovery software that would be even better. Thanksthere is no magic recovery program that does all you ask, but windows has a recovery program built in called System Recovery, lets hope you have it active and do backups every once in a while. It all depends on what you need to recover from. The simplest and arguably the best recovery system is backup. windows has a recovery program built in called System RecoveryWhat System Recovery do you have in mind? System Restore? If so, it won't restore ANYTHING else, but system files. Surely, not pictures. You can TRY Recuva. I've used it with mixed success...well atleast it's free, so you don't lose any money. if the drive from which you deleted the files is an OS drive, then the longer you use the drive, the lower your chances of succesful recovery because of the danger of overwriting the old files by windows or other apps. Pull the drive out and put in an external enclosure or plug it as a secondary drive. |

Solve : i need to know how to retrieve my documents.? |
|
Answer» i need to know how to retrieve my documents.[/color] my windows copy is not original Not sure what you mean by thisYou should be able to ACCESS the drives and files with "my computer" You should also have a boot menu on start up so you can chose the drive you want to boot to....if not try tapping F2 during the start up process. I suggest you buy a legal disk for windows and not use COPIES. Sooner or later Windows Advantage Tool update will shut down your computer. |

Solve : System Icons and Registry Issues.? |
|
Answer» HEY everyone. Just wanted to say, if this message SEEMS too direct, I apologize, its the second time I'm writing it out. (Nudged the back shortcut on my mouse... /facepalm) I was changing a few icons that I doubt microsoft intended to be changed. Start menu, System, and Drive Icons, among others. Everything was perfect, until I rebuilt my Icon Cache with TweakUI. I had thought that rebuilding that would make it so all of my icons would be saved as the default icon scheme. (LIKE shell32.dll is the default icons, I wanted my icons to be default in case anything happens, I can just change it back to the way I had it). So, I began re-moding the registry keys that hold the location of the default icons of the various icons. worked for all but 3, run, search, and control panel in the start menu. The registry keys for the default icon of each of these still shows the location of my custom icon, yet it shows the windows default icon in the start menu (see screenshot) http://i38.tinypic.com/14ms0ba.jpg How can I get this to work PROPERLY again? What does removing the Icon cache do? What are the side affects of removing the icon cache? If I rebuild my Icon cache after removing it, will it make all of the custom icons be replaced with the windows default icons, or will it make my custom icons the default ones? Is there anyway to save all my current icon settings to a scheme that I can revert back to if anything changes? (Free solutions only please) THANKS for any and all help, ImageSeems that no one knows the answer.. Post above has been editted, added more info.Deleting IconCache does no harm. It'll be rebuilt on computer restart. I don't know, if it's gonna help in your case, since you made some other changes, but it's worth to try. If it doesn't help, try System Restore. I appreciate the info. What I'm worried about is this: When the IconCache is rebuilt, it will rebuild all icons that are used in shell32.dll, not my custom icons. As far as system restore, thats a bit extreme. All of my icons work, they are just not cusotm icons anymore.the icon cache cache's icons for use by the shell. However, the icons should be loaded from the respective locations designated n the registry- changed by tweakUI or whatever tool you employed to change the icons. If the icons are showing up as generic windows icons, double-check to ensure the source of your custom icons is still valid. |
