Solve : problems with explorer.exe?

Answer»

Few weeks ago I reformatted my computer and installed a fresh copy of windows xp. Then i updated it to sp3 and all the security updates. It was fine with no pop ups or spyware. I plugged a usb drive to transfer some files and an error occured with the usb drive. so i unplugged it without the you can safely remove usb device. Then when i rebotted the computer explorer.exe kept restarting EVERY 10 SECS. I went into safe MODE and the same problem OCCURS. I donno what the problem can be. i ran sfc/ scannow but still no luckWhat antivirus software do you have?

When explorer.exe ends, does it come back up?There is a space between sfc and the /scannow switch...did you include this ?
ALSO the flash drive may be the culprit carrying the infection.
Run all your scans and re-boot after each one.
Then travel to the Virus and Spyware section and follow the instructions at the top of the page for posting your logs...does the explorer shell/icons move when clicked? if so back up ur files you may have Magistr
be careful it will rename/overwrite all of the files on ur C drive to a profane name (delteing all of your files on your hdd )

Solve : Blue Screen of Death... help??

Answer»

Hey guys, I'm Dave. I'm running a custom built computer with the following:

AMD Athlon 64 FX-57 processor

2x 256mb nVidia 7800gtx-oc GRAPHICS Cards

1x 74gb Western Digital wd740 raptor hard drive

Skyhawk 620 watt Power One power supply

ASUS A8N-SLi Premium motherboard

2x 512mb OCZ EL Platinum Revision 184-Pin DDR 400 RAM

Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS Sound Card

Now, there's been lots of problems with the hardware in this computer, first being the cd/dvd writing slot loading Plextor drive that I had which just got really messed up and started "eating" my cd's and not spittin them back out. Then I kept running into trouble with one of my hard drives, which is why I am running on one right now. Then, on top of that, I have a feeling that the OCZ RAM is failing also, but here is the real deal... I keep getting the "BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH" which I'm sure you have seen/heard of at some point in your past. The messages I get are usually any of the following:

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM

KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR

and many more...

Almost every time the computer BSOD's, it has a different file name listed for it... everything for my nVidia driver's to program files. For example, after I saw the nVidia driver listed i un-installed it and re-installed a new one, but then the BSOD just came up with another file. Also, many programs are crashing such as Mozilla Firefox and Internet explorer. Pretty much any program i try using, especially any kind of game, (whether it USES 8mb of memory or 800mb of memory), it end up crashing or having some kind of error.

These random crashes and pattern of blue screens all started at the same time, and I really need some help on fixing them.

One thing that I do not have is a floppy drive, so I can't run a memory test that I need to boot from a floppy. Any help in this subject would be GREATLY APPRECIATED.

Thank you very much.

Sincerely,

Dave

Also, I searched some probabilites that it might be the RAM... is that a common cause?Quote

Yes, bad ram can cause crashes.
Heres a memory tester program to try-
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=350
Quote-
MemTest is a RAM reliability tester. It evaluates the ability of your computer's memory to store and retrieve data accurately. A correctly functioning computer should be able to do both these tasks with 100% accuracy day in and day out. A computer that fails these tests, perhaps because of old hardware, damaged hardware, or poorly configured hardware, will be less stable and crash more often. Even worse, it will become even less stable over time as corrupted data is written to your hard disk.

By running MemTest you can ensure that your computer's RAM is correctly functioning. It is wise to test this when you buy a new computer, install new ram, or change the configuration of your machine (for instance, to overclock it). If you are the sort of user who likes to push the performance of your machine to the edge, relying upon whether your machine will boot after your new BIOS TWEAKS is a poor way to determine the safety of your new settings. Use MemTest as a true test of stability.

Limitations: The Pro version is also a Windows native program, and similar to the normal version. It is tuned, however, to the needs of users who diagnose the quality of ram often, or on multiple machines. It offers options LIKE a nice mode which allows you to test RAM in the background, during normal use of the machine, as well as more detailed reporting of errors. It also does not pause every time an error is found, so it can be used to determine the overall reliability of ram that is prone to errors, rather than just as a tool that determines if there are any errors at all.

im now running memtest and it came up with an error after 10 percent but its still goin... right after d/l memtest my computer crashed again and BSOD'd with the message DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

do interrupt codes have anything to do with the RAM?I dont KNOW, we will need to wait for one of the moderators to answer that.

The memory test however should be error free, I can run the test forever without errors on my Kingston DDR3200 1Gig stick.well, so far its just that one, but yea as i suspected there's probably something wrong with the RAM in addition to whatever else could be the problem... hopefully a moderator can help me out here sometime soon... but the weird thing is that it seemed to be working for the last year and a half ive had it...

every time i had a problem id be able to fix it by reformatting the drives and reinstalling windows, but new problems would come along every couple of months...well, i guess im gonna run it again and let it run all night, and before i do that, im gonna disable all my startup processes and reboot the computer so the least RAM is being used... well thanks for the advice thus far, and if anyone else is able to help any more, plz, it would be greatly appreciated... :-?Have you tried Microsofts debugging tools? :-?

http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/devtools/debugging/installx86.mspxI had similar problem.

I actually fixed it by uninstalling a nvidia driver from add/remove programs. Not sure what it was called, network access manager or something. I mean the nforce motherboard drivers, rather than graphics ones, if you use nforce.

Or try this
http://forums.nvidia.com/lofiversion/index.php?t6174.html

I'm not sure if this will fix all your problems though, but it might eliminate one

A $1000 machine without a $10 floppy drive?

Anyway the RAM should be tested one stick at a time, then all together for at least 30 min each.

Free hard drive diagnostics are available at the appropriate drive maker's site.

Has any part of this system been overclocked at any time?no, it hasnt, and it was 4000 dollars altogether when i was puttin it together, since it was all brand new technology, lol.this is really startin to piss me off lolyour ram may be dead!Good for him to know that since he hasn't returned in over a year...

I know whatever it is that this is, it must be extremely obvious.

All of the drivers from the gigabyte cd have been installed. There is no obvious driver that says it is for the network device.

Any ideas or suggestions are more than welcome.

I am jones'in' to finally get this computer online.

Nope I still have yellow ?'s on "Mass Storage Controller" under "other devices"

My Ethernet jack on the motherboard still does not function at all, nor is it recognized. i just installed the PCI Ethernet card from my other computer, and it works perfectly.

I guess I will figure this out later, but now I'm intrigued by why I have a "Mass Storage Controller" that is YELLOW ?'d.Still stuck with the same problems. MY internet now works, but only because I installed a new ethernet card. The ethernet on my mobo does not work.

And, how do I get rid of the "Mass Storage Controller" that shows up under Device Manager. with Yellow ?'s by it?

I have nothing plugged into my computer, and I don't know why It keeps telling me to install software for this "Mass Storage Controller"

ANy ideas would be very helpful.
Thanks.
-MattSounds like you may need to RMA the board.
Any other ideas on how to get rid of the Yellow Question Marks?

I really don't want to have to disassemble the entire computer that took me such a long time to build. and then send the mobo back and be without a computer for an extended period of time. Especially since, everything else works great on it, except for the Unidentified "Mass Storage Device" .

What would you guys do, if your computer had been running perfect for a year, and then suddenly you developed this problem of "Mass storage device" showing up with a yellow question mark?

thanks.Quote from: mattman18t on December 12, 2008, 02:42:08 PM

I would conclude, if I had done all of the things that you have done, that maybe the HDD controller chipset on the motherboard may be going flaky.

However... this is what you posted at the start of this thread:

Quote
I have been battling off and on all week with my newly built computer,

So you have a warranty, if you were being truthful.

Quote

You are being really, really foolish. (I am being polite here!) If you have a substandard new motherboard, return it! Otherwise, later on, if the rest of the board FAILS, you may be without a computer for an even more "extended period of time", until you raise the money to replace your now out of warranty motherboard!
I just can't believe that there is NO WAY TO DIAGNOSE THIS.

If you guys say there is no way, then I believe you, but it's still tough to swallow, that of all the BIOS and troubleshooting, that the only answer is to RMA the motherboard.

It seems like the only problem, is that it is detecting a piece of hardware. There should be a way to make it ignore said hardware, correct?

You obviously know more than I do about this "DIAS" . Just seems like there has to be another solution. WOuldn't the BIOS have show something if it was the HDD on the motherboard?

Probably the reason no-body is replying is that after 5 pages of advice you have basically ignored it all and done your own thing. What is the point of ASKING for advice then not taking it.

Nevermind

Open FIREFOX, then open the PAGE you want as your home page, then open Tools, Main Tab, and click on Use Current Page, the dialogue BOX will then CHANGE names. Job Done.

Solve : please help windows wont start up?

Answer»

I READ too fast...i thought it was the OP.I agree with Patio's 2nd choice myself. Do a repair-install of XP.

However, you're going to have to do some prep-work beforehand.

Does your computer have any of the following on it:
Internet Explorer 7
Service Pack 3
Windows Media Player 11?

If so, you will NEED to slipstream those three items into your XP installation source as well as an UPDATED version of your motherboard drivers (that's what viaagp1.sys is).

The dilemma here is that Microsoft doesn't support slipstreaming IE7 into Windows XP, but at the same time, acknowledges that you have to remove IE7 before doing a repair-install:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917964

However, you can't remove it, since you can't boot into Windows right now!!!

So...in this case, you'll have to use a third-party utility like nLite to slipstream IE7:
http://www.nliteos.com

If you're going to go through the trouble, you might as well use it to slipstream everything else, too: SP3, IE7, WMP11, and your via drivers, as well as burning to a new blank CD. Use the resulting CD to do your repair.

...........

...

...but then again, GIVEN all the hassle that involves, you're probably better off backing up your DATA and formatting...all that stuff you just said is way over my head.

right now I have my hardrive hooked up as a slave to my wifes system & I am running spyware/antivirus on it.

as far as the reinstalling windows stuff, I have no idea how to do that. Roger that.

In that case, go ahead and copy any valuable data to your wife's hard drive for now.

At that point, you can then format and reinstall XP (I hate telling people that, especially since that's becoming a cop-out trend...), but since you're already in a position to do this, and like you said, slipstreaming and repair-installs are beyond your technical knowledge, formatting is the next best choice (and a lot easier).

http://www.pcworld.com/article/129977/how_to_reinstall_windows_xp.html
or
http://tweakhound.com/xp/installxp/installXP1.htmok I have another question. I have a spare harddrive laying around would it be possible to load my windows XP onto that one? & than make that one the master in my system & run my old one as a slave? That's most certainly a viable option.

my PC has intel pentium4 2.80 GHz and 3GB ram. can i run xp (home) and windows 7 beta
or do i need to upgrade ?
i really like the windows 7, it makes what i do alot easier and alot faster...

thank you.Since it has only been released to Microsoft MCSE's and QUALIFIED BETA testers there's a good chance it's an "ahem" version...
Kinda STRANGE it wound up on a rental.
As far as i know they aren't releasing updates for it either.

OKay that was easy.... So, is there a way to keep the old OS and just repair it with no XP disks? Like I stated in the 1st post they were lost?

you could use an w98 floppy/CD on the old machine, then check if there is and i386 folder on
the drive...if there is you could cd to the i386 folder and try winnt....that would start the xp install and when you SELECT install it should find the existing version and you can tell it to repair it...

also a BARTPE here:

http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/

He doesn't have an XP CD and the Vista is liscensed to another machine so i don't understand where this is going....
He can borrow an XP CD to re-install provided the other machine is legit...The idea is to get to the i386 folder on his machine (which has the Windows XP source FILES on it). PE discs (Bart, Win, etc.) allow this. From there, he can run winnt32.exe and start a repair-install from it.

No need for an XP disc this way and it's legal because:

1) Win PE 2.1 is free, provided that the user makes their own disc using the WAIK or a Vista disc (the WAIK in this case). Distributing a Win PE 2.1 pre-made ISO, on the other hand, is against the EULA.

2) Many manufacturers of factory-built machines (not all, but many) stick the XP source files in an i386 folder.

I use PE all the time to do unattended installs of Windows XP from a network share. Starting it locally shouldn't be any different in this case--in fact, it would be treated like an in-place upgrade.Got it.OKay I looked on the comp and I found the I386 folder... Now what is the process from there? Remember to you some of this is like riding a bike.. To me its like speaking Korean.. SO please if someone could do a step by step. I know its ALOT to ask but it would be helpful..
Thanks ChadOpen up the i386 folder you found.

Double-click on winnt32.exe. That'll start the install (repair).KillerB:
Found the file, and clicked on it. Came back with a Error of 1722. Problem with installer package? any more Ideas?

Thanks ChadOne of two things:

1) That file is corrupt (and most likely the rest of the i386 directory you found).
or
2) You're running that winnt32 from an environment that doesn't support it (DOS, 64-bit WinPE).

I'm thinking #1 myself, since you're not "double-clicking" anything in DOS, and it's unlikely that you're using 64-bit PE. If you're running it from inside Windows XP, it should work for an in-place upgrade, but since it's not...definitely #1.

In that case, we could rewind back to Patio's suggestion and borrow Windows XP OEM disc from someone to do your repair-install...

However, after re-reading the thread (which I should have done earlier...DOH!), given the following:

1) The machine has a virus
2) You do not have an XP disc.
3) The i386 folder is accessible, but it may be corrupt.
4) We don't know if your machine has IE7 or WMP11 on it.

Repair install = BAAAAAAD idea. Repair-installing a system that's infected with a virus is just asking for trouble (as someone said earlier). Same goes for repair-installing a system with IE7 or WMP11 on it without uninstalling the two first.

So, keeping that in mind (and knowing that you already backed up your data), you will need to do one of these three options:

1) Borrow a Windows XP OEM disc from someone. See attachments for what the Home Edition and the Professional Edition OEM discs look like. Follow these instructions to install XP:

http://tweakhound.com/xp/installxp/installXP1.htm

Use the product key AFFIXED to the side of your computer when asked for one. Again, check attachments to see what it looks like (the attachment itself DOES NOT have a product key on it!)

2) Purchase an XP OEM disc. Places like Newegg and Tigerdirect sell them, as well as local computer stores. Use instructions in Step #1 for installing XP. It will come with its own product key, so use that instead of the sticker on the PC.

3) Purchase a Vista OEM disc if your computer can handle it. I would only advise this suggestion if your computer has the following:
- AT LEAST 2 GB of RAM.
- AT LEAST an 80 GB hard drive. Yes, I know it'll work with a smaller one, but Vista alone takes up 15-20 GB on install...you want room for other stuff, don't you?
- AT LEAST a late Pentium 4, Pentium D, AMD Athlon 64 X2, or similar dual-core processor.

If in doubt, stick with XP on this machine...

Solve : explorer.exe etc not working - mswsock.dll & framedyn.dll probably the problems?

Answer»

Hi everyone,
I installed windows XP on my new computer LAST night and during setup, I was told that mswsock.dll and framedyn.dll couldn't be copied on to my system for setup. I retried but it STILL didn't work so I clicked "ignore".
The computer WORKED fine but every time i started up, I would get some rundll errors because I didn't have those files.

So I went on the internet and downloaded mswsock.dll and framedyn.dll and things that required mswsock started to work but when I restarted, the computer took ages to start up and loads of apps (including explorer.exe) have stopped working.

How can I sort this out? I think it's a problem to do with mswsock.dll (i managed to REMOVE framedyn.dll) but couldn't delete it because it was "in use" and now the taskbar, desktop, etc (everything) doesnt show so I can't have another go at deleting mswsock.dll (in the system32 folder).
How can I delete mswsock.dll?

Thanks everyone!

If you want a FRESH start, you have two options:

Solve : Just a Bunch Of Discs (JBOD)?

Answer»

Hello, I have a PCI IDE RAID card and I'm USING 2 hard drives one is 250 GB and the other is 160 GB, but unfortunately I'm RUNNING out of space, and I got a IDE hard drive today from Circuit City another 250 GB. The card handles max of 4 Hard Drives. I have both hard drives configured as JBOD, like RAID 0 but it gives me full capacity for both hard drives. So now my question is, If I connect the 250 GB i bought from circuit city hard drive to the card, to expand the hard drive space, will it WORK? Could i Rebuild the array? or am i out of luck.

what part of hp laser jet printer is malfuctioning? i recieve a 50 service error?Found this:
http://www.all-laser.com/cgi-bin/webc.cgi/error50.htmlLike I said in another post, this is most commonly a POWER ISSUE (from my EXPERIENCE). However, with the tiny amount of information you have provided, there is no way of actually knowing. We need moar infoz!!!!

What is the EXACT model of your HP printer? Different printers often have different error messages/codes.

And please...follow the instructions you were given before asking the same question over and over and over and over and over again. If you don't like the answer, tough! In reality, people can't just wave a magic wand and make all your problems disappear, no MATTER how many times you post.

Follow the instructions you were given or don't bother posting.

i have configure a dual boot system CONSISTING of windows 98 in FAT 32 partition and windows xp using NTFS partition, i check my windows xp installation and it look good, however when i boot to windows 98 i cannot see the files in the NTFS partition.what might the source of the problem?
A FAT32 system will not be able to read a NTFS without, as I understand, a third party driver.

I have googled but found nothing yetWindows 9x (that INCLUDES all 95 and 98 releases) does not support NTFS. XP supports both FAT (16 & 32) and NTFS. That is why your xp system will see all but your 98 system will only see the FAT32 stuff.

The solution is to re-do the xp installation, but this time format the partition as FAT32 first, not NTFS. You will lose all of the benefits of NTFS (Quotas, Compression etc.) but you do get the desired ability to access both partitions in both 98 and xp.i successfully install xp pro and i want to check my drive for error.how can i check the error?CHKDSK /r and hit Enter.then i want to set up a dual boot senario between xp and 98 how would i do this?Replace the PSU...Quote from: jheremie on December 10, 2008, 07:41:28 PM

then i want to set up a dual boot senario between xp and 98 how would i do this?

Didn't you already do this?

LET's get this straight.

1) When you start up your computer, do you get two choices on the screen: "Windows XP Professional Edition" "Windows 98" (or something like that)? Yes No

If Yes, then I have no idea why you asked this question. That's like asking "How do I ride a bike" while you're riding it!!!!

2) Windows 98 CANNOT READ NTFS!!!

What this means is when you boot to your Windows 98 operating system, you
CANNOT
CANNOT
CANNOT
see what's on your Windows XP partition!

Windows 98 = FAT or FAT32 partitions only. Can't read anything else.
Windows XP = FAT, FAT32, and NTFS. That's why XP can read your 98 stuff, but 98 can't read your XP stuff.

To fix this problem, you should have formatted your XP partition in FAT32. That way, 98 could see your XP stuff. NTFS is GREEK to Windows 98. It's like someone trying to speak Spanish, French, or German to you*!!!

*: unless you happen to know Spanish, French, or German, of course.

So, in this order:

1) Backup your data.
2) Create two FAT32 partitions.
3) Install Windows 98 first.
4) Install Windows XP second. DO NOT convert to NTFS!

Solve : strange photos?

Answer»

I use WINDOWS xp and my email is webmail. When i open a photo attachment and it BRINGS up Window picture & fax viewer. The photo appears and at the BOTTOM where you can click arrow right or arrow left, when i click on the arrow. it opens some odd photos of windows logo, smileys, and other odd photos. They are SMALL and when i enlarge the screen, it looks like icons for different companys. It also will bring up photos of friend that i know i don't have on file and other photos that i reconize but don't have the photo on file on my computer.
Is this enough info for someone to answer?
Thanks in advanceIf you are asking where these other files are located, try here:

C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Temp
(Note: that directory can be completely deleted to save space and possibly make the computer faster)

Solve : Unable to use hotmail, cpu usage jumps to 100%?

Answer»

For the past couple of weeks I have been unable to check my hotmail accounts on my home computer. The hotmail accounts themselves are fine as I have checked them from other places. I am otherwise able to surf the net normally (or as normally as you can with dial-up lol), the only thing I cant view is my hotmail inbox.

A few more specifics. I can get to the hotmail home page to the point to put in my username and password but after doing so it acts like it is LOADING and then eventually just says "done" in the status bar and goes to a blank white screen. At this point my computer LOCKS up. Using task manager I see that my CPU usage jumps to 100%, when I try close iexplorer dumprep.exe then appears with CPU usage 100% on that. At that point the only way I can do anything is to end the task from the task manager.

I also have tried to get into hotmail by going to msn.com and logging in that way. I can sign in to my msn but when I actually try to go to hotmail the same PROBLEM as stated above happens. Everything else seems to work fine just the hotmail problem.

I did recently find two viruses/spyware on the computer they were "doubleclick" and "right media" but think/hope I took care of them. I would appreciate any suggestions I dont use my crappy dialup at home for much but I really do need to check my email frequently. Hovering over the task bar icon in the notification tray is a waste of time. All it tells you is CPU Usage.

It is far more important that you open Task Manage, select the Processes tab, and tell us WHAT "Image Name" is using all the processor.

I would GUESS it is iexplore.exe - but any solution based on a guess is risky.

Alan

He did say he opened Task Manager. My bad.

BUT what good has that done ?
We still do not know what took 100%.

I have seen 98% usage by my antivirus getting its teeth into something,
I have see my Firewall using all the resources to keep something at bay.

NB I have never seen anything, including dumpreg, use 100%,
there has always been at least 1% taken by Task Manager to show who uses what.

Having had IE now and again all but lock up with a SITE - seemingly some response to a page coding - I wonder if you can get round this by using Firefox .... just to see.?Thanks for the response so far. I am OPENING task manager to view the usage and it is ieexplore that jumps to 100% when I try to open hotmail and then dumprep.exe when I try to close it down. It only does it trying to access hotmail no other site. I will load firefox and try that.

Solve : My computer is soooooo slow??? Uggggg!!!?

Answer» OH wow, This POST has slipped. If you're still there MomNEEDShelp, apologies.

Just to ANSWER your questions, once you run CCleaner, make SURE there are ticks where I specified in the guide.

As for msconfig, it just controls what starts up with the computer, which can often make the computer run slow.
Feel free to run the list by US.

Solve : Unidentified sound?

Answer»

Hello,
I have new sound coming from my computer a few times a day but I can't figure out what program is causing it and what it means. It is definitely a program, not hardware noises. Just before it happens, whatever I'm working on gets hung up for just a MOMENT. Since I can not ASSOCIATE it with any of the open programs, I am concerned it is some kind of spyware running in the background. I looked at the list of running processes and nothing stands out to me as suspicious. I would appreciate any ideas on how I can track down the source.

The computer tries to ENTER windows but keeps going to the F8 screen commands. There is a screen that comes up FIRST says invalid boot.ini file.

Can anyone tell me why this is happening? If so, is there a way I can get to chkdsk to see if it can fix the problem? What happens if you choose any of the options? (i.e. Safe Mode, Last known good config, ect...)

I don't have the windows CD. I'm using Windows XP. No matter what option I choose, it keeps booting back to the options page.Any chance you can borrow a Windows CD from a friend?

I think you're going to have to perform a Repair Install:

Ok. Thanks! I love this forum!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Good Luck. Or you can DLoad This .iso to make a bootable Recovery Console...
This will NOT re-install XP but it will ENABLE some repair work to be tried from the Recovery Console...
Using Nero or another burning program burn it to CD making sure to check the option to create a bootable CD.
Boot to the CD...let it finish loading.
You will be at a command prompt window.
At the prompt type in fixboot and hit Enter.
Remove the CD and re-boot.

If no joy-joy repeat the above procedure except type in fixmbr and hit Enter.
Again remove the CD and re-boot.

A full list of all the RC commands is located Here...

Don't try any commands you are unfamiliar with...you've been warned.

Good Luck.

Solve : deleting old system?

Answer»

A friend of mine had another friend update his Win 2000 system to Win XP. The person SAID he would leave Win 2000 on in case my friend didn't like XP. Now my friend would like to get rid of the 2000 OS to free up space. He has forgotten his 2000 password, and can't log in to it. Both the Win 2000 and Win XP OS's are on C drive. Can I just delete his Win 2000 OS? What is the best way to get rid of it?

I'm afraid that I don't know anything more about my friend's system, so I hope there are enough details to go on.

Thanks.

BruceWhat you could do is just find the xp cd and format the harddrive, which will delete all data.Or if you can delete windows 2000 in windows EXPLORER then that might work as well but i would go with the formating.if the two OS's are on separate partitions, simply format the partition containing windows 2000.

Otherwise, you can delete the windows 2000 system folder.

The only change afterward would be to modify BOOT.INI so that the OS choices menu no longer comes up (on account of W2K no longer being bootable). This is actually a pretty messy cleanup if you think about it...
Win2K was on C: we'll presume.
If XP was INSTALLED to another partition let's again assume and say it's on D:
XP wrote files to the bootsector of C:

If you format or delete the Win2k folder.... C: will no longer boot....
Therefore no XP either.

More details would be good before anyone hoses your friends systemBoth Win 2000 and Xp are on C, there are no other partitions.

BruceWhen you turn the computer on, do you have the option of starting up either operating system?

Do us favor: click start and then choose My Computer. What is listed there?Yes, when the system starts, you can choose either OS. He cannot start Win 2000 though as he has forgotten the password. I do not have access to his computer right now, so I cannot look under "My Computer".

However, when I looked at it last, both Win 2000 and Win XP were both on C drive. Also, the only other drive letter was the CD drive.

BruceHas he considered a clean install of XP ? ?My friend suffers from a fairly severe mental illness, and does not take to change well. I am trying to find a way to do things as unobtrusively as POSSIBLE so as not to cause him undue stress.

BruceGot it...
I would suggest an image program then first...i use Acronis True Image but there are others.
Macrium makes a FREE one called Reflect but i've yet to test it.
Create an image of the drive as it is and burn it to CD/DVD...this is just in case the experiment goes South.
Then delete/remove the Win2K install...this may be tricky because i believe both Win2K and XP name it WiNNT so be sure you are getting rid of the correct one.
You will also have to edit the boot.ini as BC mentioned above to no longer show the Win2K option at boot time.
Create a backup of this file and save it beforehand.
Good Luck and let us know if there's any other questions...Thanks for the help.

Solve : Deleting the same sub folder from multiple root folders - possible??

Answer»

Does someone know of a way to automate (either batch files or software) the deleting the same directory from multiple root directories?

For example:

I want to delete a SUBFOLDER called "Apple".

The "Apple Directory" EXISTS under directories called "Orange" and "Banana". So my goal is to delete Apple without deleting the root folders "Orange" and "Banana".

I need to automate this because I ACTUALLY have to delete the same subfolder from over 200 root directories on a WEEKLY basis.

Thanks for any all help!

CephianI would use a batch file to do this.

If you know the exact given locations of multiple instances of APPLE you can path to it in a batch like below and use the RD /Q/S to remove them and all data and directories contained within them.

@echo. Batch to remove APPLE from 2 known locations

RD /q/s "C:\program files\apple"
RD /q/s C:\quicktime\apple

Note: " " required where there are any spaces in the path like "Program Files", and 'q' is quiet mode and 's' includes deletion of everything from Apple on into the tree.

*** The batch above if copy and pasted into notepad and saved as say remapple.bat and run will remove Apple from Program Files, and the second one only if that path exists. It is strongly advised that you use a UNINSTALLER to remove unwanted programs, but if you want to simply delete all the APPLES this is an easy way with known locations. If the locations are unknown, then you will want a FOR loop to search the entire drive and run RD /q/s on detections of APPLE directory. More complicated and somone in the batch forum may be able to code it up quickly for you. I am a Batch Novice and frequently visit the DOS Batch forum for advice.

I cant believe you have 200 references to APPLE on a single computer? Where you trying to state that you have multiple workstations with APPLE on them and need them removed. IF so a SIMPLE batch will not work for performing operations triggered from one location across the network without 3rd party software to allow for this remote execution. If this is the case I would code up the easy version if say 10 paths on 20 computers and put the batch in the startup folder of windows so upon every start up it will search and destroy them for you. This would be installed to all 20 computers in the startup directory of Windows.

Good Luck!

Also, you can GO ahead and run your system specs by us and we can tell you whether or not XP will run smoothly on the machine or not.

Solve : Can't see external hard drive in My Computer?

Answer»

Hello

A friend of mine has a Western Digital external hard drive on her XP computer which stores a lot of her photos. From what I can gather, she used to be able to ACCESS the photos until a virus scan was done on her computer. Now she can't see the external drive and has lost access to her photos.

If I click on My Computer the external hard drive does not appear, but it is listed in Device Manager and Windows says that she has the latest drivers.

What would be the best way for her to access her photos and for her to be able to see the drive in My Computer?

Many thanks.

Steve

First I would check to see if it works on another computer.

If it doesn't WORK on other computers, does it show up in DISK Management?
(Right Click My Computer and click on Manage. Then click Disk Management)Follow-up to Carbon Dudeoxide's POST:

In Disk Management, assign it a drive letter. Then it'll show up in My Computer. Many thanks to you both.

No, in My Computer it doesn't show on another laptop and nor does it show in Computer Management.

The USB cable from the extrenal hard drive does work as the same cable works fine with a digital camera.

This seems to imply a faulty extrenal hard drive, which is odd as it was only bought fairly recently and did work.

Cheers

SteveIf it doesn't work on other computers, I would see if you can get it replaced. (Have your receipt handy)

I wonder....Is it under warranty? Is it possible the anti-virus might have DETECTED a virus on the external drive and some-how quarantined / crippled the whole drive ?

Please bear with me - I often ask strange questions, but sometimes it pays off.

Regards
Alan

Can you take out that drive from its enclosure and connect it to other computer as a Slave? See if your drive can be recognized from there.........

Solve : My Welcome Screen is Disabled?

Answer»

I have a Dell with Windows XP Professional, Version 2002, and Service Pack 2 on it. I bought it secondhand, they had wiped everything off and then reinstalled Windows XP on it. (I don't know how much difference that will make.)

About 3 weeks AGO I was on my computer, the power flickered and then my computer shut off and then rebooted itself, which was kind of weird since when that had happend previously it just stayed off. When it got to where the Welcome screen was at, a prompt came up (with a black screen behind it) like the Windows 98 used to use asking you to input the user name and password. When I do this it works perfectly fine in every way. Its just that I no longer have a Welcome screen.

It also won't let me switch users. When I try to it shows just my background and then a prompt comes up that says "This computer is in use and has been locked. Only a Computer administrator may unlock it." I am a computer administrator. Then it has a place to type my name in and password. When I do this, it brings my taskbar back up and then continues on as normal. HOWEVER, I had never tried to switch users before this happend, because I had offline files or something enabled.

I have more than one account on this computer and it is very annoying to have to type in names when one of us wants to get on. Can someone please tell me a way to get my welcome screen back?
Welcome to the CH forums.

Yep, that's exactly wot is SAID on the linked site, a regedit it's just given as an option.

Apart from that, the first choice on the linked site is to do presactly what you also posted.

Would the registry thing work, and is there a chance I could accedentally mess up my computer?

The registry 'thing' might work and yes, you could accidentally cripple your system during a regedit. Regedits have been known to cause mayhem and should never be undertaken unless the user has backed up the registry and knows how to reinstate the backup copy if things do go wrong. Check your keyboard ENTRIES and you should be good to go.

Good luck

SOUNDS like you have a corrupted registry. This may be because of a power failure while the registry was being updated, or an improper shutdown (e.g. somebody just pulled the plug) or possibly the beginnings of hard drive failure.

There is a Microsoft guide here

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545

Please NOTE that this is NOT for use if you have an OEM installed version of Windows. In that case you may have to use the SUPPLIED recovery disk.

Solve : XP error while installing .exe files after MS updates?

Answer»

How do I fix that ERROR on all .exe apps?

I have a very common error. I did a Google, search for the error. It seems like a lot of others has this error. I will post my error below. I get this error when TRYING to INSTALL .exe programs. For example. I tried to install IrfanView. I get an error. I tried right clicking, then properties, then click on unblock. It didn't work. Some or most say unblock will work. In my case it didn't. This just recently started after new updates. I guess it's a new error by MS?

Windows cannot access the SPECIFIED device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item.

I am the administrator of this PC.So, is it only installing your programs, or will it stop you from starting them as well?

And do you mean installers packaged in an EXE, or does it also have the problem with MSI installs as well?

have you tried CCleaner? (www.ccleaner.com)

Also; it's worth a shot to MAKE sure your computer is clean (of malware); make a thread in the viruses forum, with the appropriate logs (some of the program installs might fail for you; just note the problem in the post), and they should be able to fix your problem, even if it isn't actually malware.

So my question is, does WINDOWS XP Pro have such a log that lists every date and time the system was logged onto, and, if so, how do I access it?

Solve : Laptop very, very, very slow!?

Hi,
Its a Hyundai M-Life HYM 365 SX with 80 Gb and 701 mb RAM. OS Win XP Pro was corrupted. I have lost its recovery CD and not able to get replacement. Formated HDD and installed Win XP Pro SP2 from borrowed CD using NTFS partition. It took 36 hours to INSTALL ( same even with Win 98 or Ubuntu installation - terribly slow ). After installation, screen shows M-Life logo - I have to manually boot Ctl, Alt Del ( This laptop has no FDD ) and it takes 25 minutes to COME to desktop. After that every thing is in slow motion. I used a USB drive to install all the drivers (which took ages!)which I got from Hyundai M-Life Website except Network Controller. Thus cannot connect to Internet. I downloaded many free antivirus scans - Hijack, AVG, Bootvis, Spybot S & D, SuperAntiSpyware, registry clean, memtest, scandisk, chkdisk etc, etc, but most AV requires internet connection. I changed the HDD from a good laptop with win 98 SE - it worked well for the first few minutes (and I was happy! ) but became slow afterwards. Now mem usage is constant 100 % and PC freezes and I have to work on safe-mode, still with mem usage 100 % but workable. The cooling fan is running OK and I use extra fan to cool. Unchecked start-up and services - no change. Processes high is explore.exe, svchost, crcss etc. When I stop any of these processes laptop shuts or shows blank screen. When I shutdown or restart, it always COMES to the propriety logo. Where can I download the network controller driver for this computer so that I can connect to the internet? Does the BIOS need to be updated if so where can I download? Is it a h/ware problem? No error codes are displayed. I would be very grateful if someone can help me. Thanks so much. Best Regards, Mahathev - MALAYSIAI have waited too long for someone to help me. Moderators - is there something wrong with my question - have I asked a forbidden question that many take a look and keep away. This is genuine and I really need some light on this matter. If anything is wrong with my question please inform me and I will log off forever from this forum. Just let me know where I went wrong. Thanks and still waiting. Best Regards, Mahathev

Other forum members may be able to help, but I am not familiar with your problem.

I think it's just a matter of waiting, my friendQuote from: reddevilggg on December 03, 2008, 10:10:14 AM

Actually not the case as far as I am aware, except for Malware Specialists in the malware forum.
mahathev, I think the reason you haven't got any replies is partly the massive amoutn of text with no paragraphs. Also, consider that people may not know the answer - I certainly don't.
Please do remember that we are volunteers.Ever thought of getting the laptop looked at by IT specialists? For example if you live in the UK you will be familiar with PC World, they have a technical area in every store where somebody will take a look at your laptop. If that fails then I would suggest buying a new hard drive, if that fails, I would suggest a replacement laptop. It must be a hardware issue because formating the HDD would remove software issues.
Regards,
JacobI strongly advise against going anywhere near PC World.
Their work is shoddy and they overcharge for everything.
I agree however that takign it to a computer shop might be an idea if no one here has any ideas.Quote from: Calum on December 03, 2008, 11:36:16 AM

Fairly true, a family run bussiness may be better, but may lack expertise.
But i'd rather be overcharged and have fixed the problem.I'd fix it myself, but that's beside the point.
Regarding PC World, their work is amongst the worst I've seen, rivalled only by Packard Bell in my experience.
Example: my uncle bought a laptop from there. The thermal paste was wrongly applied, so the CPU was overheating, one of the RAM modules came loose, the HDD wasn't plugged in properly, and they pulled a fast one by swapping the CPU for a much older model during one of the many times he took it in for repairs. Their customer service is just depressing too. I could trot out some more examples, but that was enough for me.
With the prices they're charging too I'd expect a solid gold computer.
You may have had good experiences, I'll steer well clear myself and would pass on that advice to anyone gladly if it will SAVE them the pain my uncle went through.Quote from: Calum on December 03, 2008, 11:47:12 AM

In that case so will I, I have no experience with their services first hand. Thanks for the heads up, If I do have any technical issues, I won't be going there, thanks.I am deeply sorry Reddevilggg, now I know how this forum is handled. In Malaysia we do not have PC World, but I will now take the laptop to a specialist to check for me and will take it on from there.

I agree with Calum - should have worded text neatly.

Thanks Jacob for your views.

Thanks Guys - my sincere apology to everyone.
It's O.K, hope you get your computer fixed.

But always remember to ask here first. If anybody here has knowledge of your problem, we will be only to pleased to help and we could save you some money.

See you in the future

P.S you could take it to a specialist, then tell us what the specialist says and ask for advice again, before you hand over money to him.

Good Luck

Solve : need to backup data?

Answer»

I have the necessary equipment to back up data from a non booting laptop hard drive to another laptop. If I get an external HD, is it POSSIBLE to hook the external HD and the non booting HD to a common laptop and transfer data from the non booting HD to the ext HD.

I woulda backed up the data from the non boot HD to the laptop if I had enough memory, but I dont and thats why I want to transfer the data to the ext HD. Is it possible?

One of thes is 8 to 10 Bucks....HOOKS up any laptop drive to an IDE ribbon cable in a Desktop machine....
But it's ALWAYS good to have an external on hand as well...patio,

Yes I have one of those, and I can hook up my laptop to the non booting hd and I can see the files and folders. Is it posssible to attach an ext HD to my laptop as well so that instead of transferring data from that hd to my laptop, I transfer it to the ext hd.
Yes, that will work fine...
I misunderstood as you said it was a non-booting laptop.

Run at least your Anti-Virus scan before transferring any files to be safe.patio
will do, thanks, ILL post back if I run into any trouble
thanks all, I did it with your help
Good News.

Solve : recovery software?

Answer»

Was wondering if anyone knew any GOOD RECOVERY software that would tackle every ANGLE that I would need it for, from recovering music to pictures to Hardware issues. And if anyone knows of a FREE recovery software that would be even better. Thanksthere is no magic recovery program that does all you ask, but windows has a recovery program built in called System Recovery, lets hope you have it active and do backups every once in a while. It all depends on what you need to recover from. The simplest and arguably the best recovery system is backup.

Edit: What happened to the jpg files you want to recover? Were they deleted via the Recycler or using Shift+del? How many are there?

What System Recovery do you have in mind?
System Restore?
If so, it won't restore ANYTHING else, but system files. Surely, not pictures. You can TRY Recuva. I've used it with mixed success...well atleast it's free, so you don't lose any money.
if the drive from which you deleted the files is an OS drive, then the longer you use the drive, the lower your chances of succesful recovery because of the danger of overwriting the old files by windows or other apps. Pull the drive out and put in an external enclosure or plug it as a secondary drive.

Solve : i need to know how to retrieve my documents.?

Answer»

i need to know how to retrieve my documents.[/color]
i turned on my computer which was working perfectly the night before ,and on a black screen read( on the lines of ) " system32\hal.dll file corrupted reinstall from windows CD" i turn my computer off and on again 50 times, and i tried to exit the screen, which didn't work.
so i put in the boot CD and FOLLOWED the steps. now i have documents in C: so i reinstalled windows on D: thinking it would fix the problem or just take the corrupted file from D:
so windows finally starts up i open C: and not a single document is there. when i go to the properties of C: it reads [3.28 GB free ; 9.76 GB] so that means my stuff is still there TAKING up space in C:. right?
how do i find it?
WINDOWS is starting up in D: as the main drive how to i start off C: again?
I've tried the search option on the C: drive.
my documents include PICTURES, music, movies, and notes.
another point is that my windows copy is not original, yet its been working with me for sometime.

I'm literally in tears, appreciate any help.Quote from: skull kitty

my windows copy is not original

Not sure what you mean by thisYou should be able to ACCESS the drives and files with "my computer"

You should also have a boot menu on start up so you can chose the drive you want to boot to....if not try tapping F2 during the start up process.

I suggest you buy a legal disk for windows and not use COPIES. Sooner or later Windows Advantage Tool update will shut down your computer.

Solve : System Icons and Registry Issues.?

Answer» HEY everyone.

Just wanted to say, if this message SEEMS too direct, I apologize, its the second time I'm writing it out. (Nudged the back shortcut on my mouse... /facepalm)

I was changing a few icons that I doubt microsoft intended to be changed.
Start menu, System, and Drive Icons, among others.

Everything was perfect, until I rebuilt my Icon Cache with TweakUI.
I had thought that rebuilding that would make it so all of my icons would be saved as the default icon scheme. (LIKE shell32.dll is the default icons, I wanted my icons to be default in case anything happens, I can just change it back to the way I had it).

So, I began re-moding the registry keys that hold the location of the default icons of the various icons.

worked for all but 3, run, search, and control panel in the start menu.

The registry keys for the default icon of each of these still shows the location of my custom icon, yet it shows the windows default icon in the start menu (see screenshot)

http://i38.tinypic.com/14ms0ba.jpg

How can I get this to work PROPERLY again?

What does removing the Icon cache do?

What are the side affects of removing the icon cache?

If I rebuild my Icon cache after removing it, will it make all of the custom icons be replaced with the windows default icons, or will it make my custom icons the default ones?

Is there anyway to save all my current icon settings to a scheme that I can revert back to if anything changes? (Free solutions only please)

THANKS for any and all help,
ImageSeems that no one knows the answer..

Post above has been editted, added more info.Deleting IconCache does no harm. It'll be rebuilt on computer restart.
I don't know, if it's gonna help in your case, since you made some other changes, but it's worth to try.
If it doesn't help, try System Restore.
I appreciate the info.

What I'm worried about is this:
When the IconCache is rebuilt, it will rebuild all icons that are used in shell32.dll, not my custom icons.

As far as system restore, thats a bit extreme.
All of my icons work, they are just not cusotm icons anymore.the icon cache cache's icons for use by the shell. However, the icons should be loaded from the respective locations designated n the registry- changed by tweakUI or whatever tool you employed to change the icons.

If the icons are showing up as generic windows icons, double-check to ensure the source of your custom icons is still valid.

Solve : Computer won't even turn on.?

Answer»

Okay, thanks for your help FED!
if you go to www.dell.com and click on Account and support it should ask for your service tag.

type it in... the service tag will be on top or the back of the PC.

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs

I didn't mention about a second video card because i didn't THINK you had one.. just by the message you been putting here on this thread. what can i say i assume sometimes.. bad HABBIT don't do it... LOL

as for wiping out your HD.. i didn't want that for you just to make sure the HD was ok before we move on

you did say you had a dell? Dell website should give you all the information about your PC, if you have a AGP videocard, PCI, or a PCI express.

spider Okay, I'll check out the Dell website. Thanks spider! No problem and good Luck!
let us KNOW how it went too.

spiderOkay, I haven't done anything to my computer since I last posted in here, and it is still not working. In fact, now when I turn the computer on, the monitor will not show anything but a black screen. I've checked the PLUGS just to make sure it wasn't unplugged or anything. So, now even when the disk for Ubuntu loads, I am not able to see anything. I'm about to give up lol.

Side Note:
I did go to the Dell website, but I couldn't find the specs on my computer even after entering in my service tag...

Solve : Loss of sound when leaving standby in XP?

Answer»

I loose sound after closing lid to enter standby. A reboot always fixes the problem until I close lid and enter standby. If standby is disabled the problem does not occur.

Have checked all the usual places like device manager and sound settings in control panel - everything appears normal. Earphones always work.

Have installed latest sound drivers (Sigma Tel) from Dell with no change
Have reinstalled Direct X 9c - no change
ran SFC - found three indexes and deleted them still no sound after RESUMING from standby, everything else works great

Dxdiag generates the following:
Sound Tab 1: DirectSound test results: Failure at step 19 (User verification of software): HRESULT = 0x00000000 (error code) - this is only after resuming from standby mode. If tested before ENTERING standby, no errors are reported and no problems are reported.

System was restored to a known good point to no AVAIL. This point was immediately prior to letting windows update install 12 critical updates. Have reinstalled latest sound drivers (Sigma Tel) from Dell with no change.

Have deleted sound device from within device manager then reboot with new install. Everything works fine until resuming from standby mode. Also have latest BIOS from Dell. There are no tweaks for sound in BIOS.

Any ideas?
Dell thinks the error message means the sound card is bad - I think they want to sell parts

Microsoft had me run MSCONFIG with no services other than M$ stuff and no startup programs but this didn't make any difference either. I haven't heard back yet
