Solve : How to work with both USB and ethernet interface simultaniously.?

Answer»

I am working in WINDOWS XP. I have connected USB and ethernet simultaniously.. But only ethernet root traffic is working ... Do u have any idea how to work with both simultaniously...

I have given different IP address for both the interfaces but network traffic analyzer is showing the samk IP address for both USB and ethernet interface.

you can only hook to an internet service with one IP unless you are using a router.

you will have to pic one way or the other to go on the internet, both services can not use the same IP at once...you would NEED to pay for 2 internet connections to do that and what would you gain by it? windows could not utilize it anyway.Quote from: ranjana on November 27, 2008, 02:27:45 AM

I am working in windows XP. I have connected USB and ethernet simultaniously..
Why do this? I don't believe you have anything to gain from it. If it did work, it isn't going to give a faster Internet experience, if that's what you're thinking.I have to do this for testing purpose.
I think I could not explain the problem properly..

I have to test both USB and ethernet interface simultaniously... But on connecting both USB and ethernet cable simultaniously, traffic takes only ethernet path (USB interface is totaly ignored)....If I remove the ethernet cable, then only traffic is moving through USB interface. I am testing using ICMP traffic..

I have given different LAN IP address for both the interfaces .windows can use only one connection, one or the other.

You may want to experiment with bridging the networks, I have no idea if it will do anything to help but its all I can think of.

I can't imagine a problem you may be having that you would think this is a solution.
please try and explain, someone may have a better solution for your problem.Quote from: ranjana on November 27, 2008, 11:34:14 PM

try this:

setup a second system, setup network on it and use something like "test" for the workgroup name..

setup you main system the same way, now connect the USB interface to second system, setup a script
to move data to the second system...it should move over the USB interface...goto to something like
dslreports speed test in your browser and run the speed test...data should be moving over your
ethernet connection....now run both the script and the speed test...

reverse the connections to second system to test the other way BUT use a straight through cable
for the NIC connection....

good luck

I got a solution. I have created a bridge connection between both ethernet and USB interface. Now ICMP traffic is moving towards devices connected to both the interfaces.

Thank you all for your replies.

Any body have any idea to solve this through routing.I use a Netgear Firewall Router.

It has 4 ethernet ports, plus a Wireless feature.

My computer has an ethernet port that works with the router.
It also has a Wireless Adapter that is plugged into one of 4 USB Ports.

Both Wireless and Ethernet work separately.
They also seem to work simultaneously.

Only after connecting from VIA the ethernet was I able to start using the router,
and only via the router was I able to set up on the router the desired wireless encryption etc.
Only with the Wireless active and the ethernet working was I able to get the PC to see the signal, and to allow me to supply the encryption key and complete the wireless connection.

If the router wireless is disabled, plugging the USB Wireless adapter into the PC does not enable it, I have to command the router via the ethernet.

Perhaps I am wrong, but I think of this as showing the P.C. can use the USB port and the Ethernet port simultaneously, and simultaneously is the only sensible way to manage a seamless transition between the two methods.

Alan

The "two methods" meaning wired and wireless, right? Then, no, it's not "the only sensible way to manage a seamless transition between the two?" This is normally done in a sequential manner, not simultaneously. In other words, access the router admin panel via wired connection and enable wireless, including encryption settings; this can be done from another computer, perhaps a desktop that's normally connected via cable to the router, or it can be done from the portable computer via wired/ethernet connection. Then, if the portable computer was used to setup wireless in the router, disconnect the ethernet cable from the portable and create the corresponding settings for a wireless connection in Windows on the portable computer. 1. I Know (or think I know) they work simultaneously because my Netgear Router statistics shows the "Uptimes" of both "LAN 10M/100M" and "WAN 11M/54M", and both durations update every 5 seconds when both cable and USB adapter are plugged in.

2. I defer to your experience, perhaps it was not sensible, but it worked for me.

Another computer is not an option - I have only one.

I had no end of problems, and MANY restorations of an archive image that was "ethernet enabled only", before I succeeded in getting the Netgear USB/Wireless adapter installed successfully. I rejected as unsuccessful every attempt that dumped another 60 MBytes of Netgear Wireless WIZARD etc. I eventually got it down to about 1 or 2 MBytes - I don't quite remember, and I really don't want to relive the experience !!!

After all that I then had to get the two ends of the wireless communicating.
I got nowhere by starting at the P.C. USB end.
By working through to the router I was able to stipulate an encryption key so I was safe from ISP freeloaders before I enabled the Wireless,
and then the P.C. saw the wireless signal and using the ethernet I could change by SSID and confirm that the USB adapter saw the change of name.
Whilst in this condition the Windows Wireless thingy gave me OPTIONS that were not available before this signal was present.

With both Wireless and Ethernet active, I was able to go via ethernet to the router to select and copy the encryption key, and then paste that into the P.C. Wireless whatsit, after which the wireless was successfully connected.

So far I have not needed the wireless.
I only installed it to overcome possible problems before it was out of warrantee,
and because it would be ungracious not to - it came with the router which was a "Father's Day" Gift.

The only downside was that on one occasion I had to do a power down/up reset on the router before I could log onto its controls - I think I might have logged on via Wireless and after a system crash I tried via Ethernet (or it could have been the other way round) - anyway - the router seemed to think I had not logged out from my previous connection, and was not going to let me log-in in again from anywhere.

Perhaps this Hiccup could also occur with only one type of connection,
and I won't know unless I test by logging in and then crashing Windows,
but my lifestyle is to recover from crashes - not to induce them.

Anyway, I now do the "sensible" thing and only have the ethernet in use.

After plugging in the wireless adapter I can tell the router (via ethernet) to enable wireless, and then the wireless is connected, and then I can log out of the router (I ASSUME this is sent from the P.C. by Wireless as well as ethernet) and then disconnect the ethernet cable. There are apparently seamless transitions from "Ether Only" to "Ether + Wireless" to "Wireless Only".

What problems could occur with both Wireless and Ethernet connected ?
I do not ask to argue, but because my reason for joining this FORUM is to learn.

Would you advise that I should never have both connected ?
Should I always unplug the USB adapter before plugging in the ethernet cable ?

I have alot of room in comp. it only takes about 1 min or less to run. and it defrag about 50%

If it doesn't finish how do you know how long it takes to run ? ?
Alot of room doesn't mean much on this end.Run all other maintenance programs before defrag.
Diskcleanup
Remove old programs not used
Remove all temp files
Clean the registry
Run the antivirus and antiAd
Close all windows
Make sure you have 15 to 20% free space on the HD
Run sfc /scannow ( sounds like system files are messed up )
If you have lots of free space, yet the defrag doesn't run fully, then it's PROBABLY due to fragmented system files like the MFT. Check the defrag analysis report, and you'll know for sure.

The Windows XP defragger cannot process these files (although the defrag API does have this function from XP onwards), and neither can any of the free ones, AFAIK. Easiest thing to do is use the Diskeeper 2009 free trial versions as mentioned in the other thread. These work just like the full versions except that they are active only for a month. Download from the Diskeeper site, install and defrag. It will defrag most of the MFT without any hassles. Run a boot-time defrag if necessary. I use the full version (paid) and it's excellent, so I can recommend it without hesitation.

Solve : When I try to open multiple pictures, my computer beeps.?

Answer»

Well it only started this recently. It probably has something to do with the programs I started using. I bought an Olympus camera and now, whenever I OPEN a picture, when another picture is already loaded, my computer beeps very violently at me for half a second or so.

The program I use to open pictures is NeroPhotosnap... 6,7 or 8 (I'm not sure which) and even though it started when I bought the new camera, it now happens when I open any picture and another picture is already open.

and sorry if this has already been discussed, but I couldn't find a discussion of this topic. What Operating System?

Does the beep come from the speakers or from the motherboard (inside the computer)?

What format are these pictures in? (.jpg, .bmp, ect...)Well the beeping is coming from the speakers, I'm using "Microsoft Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Service Pack 3 and the pics are in JPEG.
Oh and I use some Stupid Dell Laptop Latitude D510 Try this.

Right CLICK on a picture and go to Open With and click on Microsoft Picture and Fax Viewer.Ahhh so it was the program I was using, thank you.
It's much nicer to be able to open a picture without jumping in my seat You can change the file association so pictures always automatically open with the Picture Viewer.
Just Right Click the Picture and go to Properties. Then click Change.I always associate Nero with stealing all the file associations it can lay its hands on !!!

Regards
Alan
I've always disliked programs that always ask if they can take over their file associations when you start them. Sometimes I'm a bit too quick and just SAY yes.

I said no the last 100 million times why would I say yes this time? Can anyone say AcDSee ? ?
Probably one of the worst offenders i've ever seen....
Why on earth would this app make itself the default to open a .reg file is beyond me...
That's just one example.

This is nonsense.

How so?

My company WORKS with Dells all the time.

I see this most often when I install the OS with a PS/2 keyboard/mouse. When I take the machine onsite and PLUG the USB keyboard/mouse that COMES with it, they don't respond on the "Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to log in" screen. Sometimes, after waiting a few minutes, Windows plug and play will detect and install the drivers without any interaction and both keyboard and mouse will respond. Other times, it'll require user interaction with the "FOUND New Hardware Wizard" after logging in.

Two workarounds for the latter case:

1) PS/2 keyboard/mouse (which isn't an option for newer Dells)
2) Remote Desktop into the PC from another computer and go through the Found New Hardware Wizard that WAY.

Solve : My compter won't turn on?

Answer» HI.....my computer suddenly stopped working, and will not turn back on. I have tried everything I can think of. The outlet is working, the power supply is working, I have reseated all of the connections and cards. I have visually examined the mother board for anything unusual. I can't seem to think of anything it can be except for the motherboard just took a crap on me. It is a HP Pavillion, it is about 2 and a HALF YEARS old. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
BeckyUnplug from the wall and wait 30 seconds. PLUG back in and wait 30 seconds.

PUSH the power button on the tower and wait for the computer to power up.

The above should reset factory defaults. Don't get in a hurry for the computer to power up. Don't push the power button several times.

Solve : usb 2 will not work?

Answer»

pc is a 2.6 amd with ms-7005 microatx mainboard 1 gig memory 40 gig h/drive
i need usb2 for internet conection bought a pci usb hub with software installed it windows xp pro detcted and installed tured system off to re boot and the hub only works as usb 1 it says high speed device plugged into non highspeed conection i tried uninstalling and re installing no joy.
i tried changing bios setting for usb 2 to pci still nothing , in the device manager it says code 10 fault? please helpIs this your motherboard: http://www.eprom.com/home/Microstar/ms7005.htm

If so, your front USB ports are 1.1, not 2.0. You should have two USB 2.0 ports on back. Will that be sufficient? If not, ADDING a PCI USB card to add more USB 2.0 ports would be a solution.

I have a system with a motherboard that had two USB 2.0 ports on back and USB 1.1 ports on front. I installed Rosewill Low-Profile PCI to 2+1 USB2.0 Cards Model RC-100, which provided two additional USB 2.0 ports on back and allowed me to convert two front ports to USB 2.0 by switching the wiring for those ports from the motherboard pins to the pins on the card.My computers old enough to only have usb 1.1; and as far as I can tell, the front ports are connected with a PROPRIETARY DELL front panel connector; solution? plug the hub/card reader into my PCI-USB card, making it easy access for mass storage and my MP3 player.both front and back usb are 1 or 1.1 i have bought a usb 2 hub to go into psi slot which xp picked up but it shows up code 10 error ive tried to uninstall all usb devices and re boot which then installs drivers but still showing up code 10 fault ?Go into device manger and right click the device and choose Update Driver. This will start the Hardware Update Wizard. Follow the instructions to update the driver. The card manufacturer may have an updated driver for that card. You can try to download it from there.

If that doesn't do it, then I would suspect that there is a conflict of system resources.
If you don't know how to manually configure your devices then you may have a hard time trying to resolve the conflict.

Have you thought about just buying a network card for internet?i will try the device manager way again but i can not go on net to download new driver till the usb 2 runs
my internet connection is usb 2 mobile dongle from three not sure what network card does to be honest and will it work ? i just seem to be buying and not resolvingA 2.0 hub will not make a 1.1 slot run at that speed...you need a PCI 2.0 USB add on card to do so...Don't buy a network card if your connection is a USB dongle. Network cards are for Ethernet (RJ45) connections.

As for updating your drivers, I disagree that you should use Windows to find updates. I don't think that has ever worked for me.

Go directly to the manufacturers website and find your product. You bought it, so you should know precisely what it is. Find downloads/support for it and get the latest drivers.

Verify BEYOND a shadow of a doubt that the PCI USB card is, in fact, USB 2.0.

Solve : Remote Desktop help?

Answer»

I have Windows XP PRPO. and I saw a lot of Information on the Net about how you can setup Remote Desktop on your Two Computers without any outside Programs.

I saw ware it tells of one way and it goes like this.
If you have Windows Firewall turned on go and make sure the settings for Allow Remote Connection has a Chack Mark in it.

Then go onto the computer that will be the one you will try to be connecting to and findout the IP Adress.

Once you have this you can go BACK to your Main computer and try to connect to the other one.

Now it tells me make sure both computers are online and connected to the Internet.

Then you can use the one computer to enter the other computer. You just go to Start then Program then Accesorys and then Remote Connection. Then Just type th IP Address of the other computer.

And click OK and you sould be connected in a Window that will show you the other Desktop.

OK this is what I need help with befor I start?
I know if I was on anetwok of computers in on place like an office this way would WORK.

But when both computers are Online and connected to the Inter net say one computer is at your Home and the other computer is at your Sisters Home.

If you type in the IP Address of the one computer in the Remote Desktop Box and click OK it can't find the other computer all the way across the Internet even if you have the IP Address.

But all the Information I find on the Net says it will work and can work and that you can use this way to Connect your computer to another one of yours.

Please helpYou have to find out the external IP address (that is the IP the rest of the world sees) of the computer/network you are trying to connect to.

If you wanted to connect to your sister's computer, she would need to go to a site like http://whatismyip.org/ - then give you that IP.

You can then use that IP to connect to her computer. Try that, but, if that doesn't work, she might need to forward port 3389 on her router/modem to her computer.

Hope this helps, let me know if you require further assistance.Well I know about the way you just told me.

If you go to Youtube.com and just do a search for Remote Desktp they all talk of WAYS to connect your computer to say your other computer without going through a Web Site.
So what I need to know is if my sister and me are both Online and are with Verizon are you telling me that I would need the IP Address of not her computer but her Verizon MODEM??Assuming your sister is connecting to the internet like this:

WWW > Verizon > Modem > Router > Sister's PC

You'll probably need to set up remote desktop protocol forwarding on your router to make sure the RD requests gets to the right computer.

Also, most ISPs issue dynamic IP ADDRESSES, so you may want to invest in something like www.dyndns.org to make sure you can always reach the same computer. By invest, I mean take the three minutes, since it's free. That probably won't be an issue if you are actively coordinating with your sister, since a dynamic address doesn't change THAT often.

I am trying to set up my new computer and I downloaded FIREFOX .I am not able to watch video or play music through firefox as it is looking to load plugins but they will not load.
It works fine with IE so I need to know what to REMOVE on the IE browser to turn that off so as to get firefox to be my browser.I hope this makes sense.
I assume you're trying to get Firefox to watch videos on Youtube?

You need to download/install Flash Player for Firefox:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/browse/type:7I downloaded adobe reader/flash player/java/and a few other items on the firefox page and I am stil not able to watch videos or listen to my music PLAYLISTS etc...I get a plugin symbol and Computer is brand new and if I open IE I can watch video and whatever else.Is there something that I need to turn off or remove,in order to use Mozilla firefox?I used it on my old computer with no problems. What website?

Also, what version of Firefox?QUOTE from: PIGROLL on December 06, 2008, 07:44:12 AM

No, IE and Firefox need their own plug-in installations. You don't need to remove any plug-in that IE now has.

Can you view any websites USING Flash with Firefox?I can go on sites with firefox but I am unable to watch videos or listen to music .I downloaded the plugins from the mozilla firefox page and it is the same as the link that you posted. Thanks ahead.I would reinstall Firefox.

If that doesn't work, try a clean reinstall of firefox:

I downloaded the correct items and did not install them. How dumb is that? After they were installed all is good.
Thanks to all who repliedglad it works for you!!! You download the plugins BUT you have to install it so firefox knows it exists and can use it when you need it LOL

Solve : Start-up Problem?

Answer»

Hi...

Today, I had left my computer unattended for about an hour. I had Opera running, and when I had came back, I click on the tab for it on the task bar but the computer froze when I pressed it. So, I pressed on my power button to restart the computer..

When it came on it loaded up until the task bar and the icons on my DESKTOP. However, when I bring the mouse to the taskbar, my mouse turns into the hourglass symbol preventing me from pressing anything on the task bar. Along with this, the system tray icons are not loading. I figured I would try to click on one of the icons on the desktop but when I do this, the mouse turns into an hourglass symbol and nothing happens..

Nothing else loads up but the task bar and the icons, and usually my system tray icons are the NEXT to LOAD but my computer never gets to that point. I'm not really sure what the issue is or how it can be fixed so I'm hoping someone knows what I'm talking about and how to resolve this issue.

Currently, I am using the computer in safe mode which seems to be working.

Help would be greatly appreciated!Did you try System Restore from Safe Mode?Control-Alt-Delete should get you to the Task Manager.

There you can see your running Applications, and you can kill whatever is hogging your system. (Or do the same in Processes.)

It sounds as though something came along via Opera and is stalling out your system.

Plus you can use File at the top left corner of Task Manager, and "New Task" gives you your Run command line, so you can do pretty much anything from there. You are posting here, so I assume you have another computer, and you can Google for any run commands you want—such as system restore.

You might want to Google about Task Manager too, because you can basically run everything you want from there.

(In the future, use the freeware NTREGOPT [NT Registry OPTIMIZER] and its companion ERUNT, which are free and much better than System Restore. Take a bit of time to read the README textfile that comes with them.)

(Also in the future, firewalls such as ZoneAlarm INCLUDE taskbar icons that let you lock off internet access automatically after, say, 10 minutes away from the computer.)

Good luck.

Solve : ATI x1300 Radeon?

Answer» HI, my father has a ATI x1300 radeon and for some reason his GAMES running slow.

he has updated his patch for the game Gothic 3 forsaken gods.

he has XP home service pack 3
RAM 2GB
ATI radeon display: 256MB PCI card
Pentium 4 CPU 3GB

it only happens on some parts of the game that it would freeze and play slow..... more in the towns where there is more GRAPHICS in the game but it still does freeze and play slow everywhere in the game
while playing the game.. it would freeze for a MOMENT and starts to play again... then it would freeze... over and over again.

I updates the display graphic card drivers and told him to go to windows updates.

The PCI card is all ready slow so the performance will bite anyway.
I told him he might have to wait for the next patch.

is there anything that i could do... that may know more about graphic cards then me.

Thanks again!

spider
MAKE sure all Tray items are turned off before starting a session.
Regular maintenence such as diskclean and defrag should be kept up with.
NEVER rely on Windows update for drivers...travel to the card manuf. site for the proper ones.
Check to see if the specific game has any Forums that may supply some tweaking hints....
Best of Luck. That's not a gaming video card, so you'd expect that kind of performance.

I'm not sure what you mean by "Pentium 4 CPU 3GB".

If the system is defragged and clean (CCleaner from fileHippo; maybe Ad-Aware; plus AVG), you're probably as good as you'll get. The 2GB of RAM is good, anyway.

Solve : Dump text interpretation??

Answer»

I completed my first self-built computer a few weeks ago. It is also my first x64 XP, and it is also my first SYSTEM using SATA.

I have 2 XP 64s in multiboot, which I'm familiar with.

All is basically okay, but there is something unstable. I sometimes get a BSoD very soon after a restart, suspiciously close to the time Windows has come up and made a full and proper screen display. I get a dump message, and an automatic restart. After that the computer might go all day (and all night) without problems.

I am suspicious that the problem is connected with ONE of my (many) software apps not working properly with 64-bit. I can easily remove an APP or two, but it would take several days, maybe a week, to remove everything and rebuild it, because the system is very complex and meticulously formatted.

Here is my dump message:

Solve : Cannot boot from cd/usb to recover forgotten admin pass?

Answer»

BartPE wouldn't have worked anyway. Because we couldn't boot from any device other than the HD. I put in the CD, booted the computer and entered the boot menu. Then I hit enter on boot from CD/DVD and nothing happened, the system started up as normal.

But, i booted into the Lenovo recovery wizard, which could be booted from the HDD. then from there, i was able to boot from CD, which had Ophcrack on it. It cracked the pass in about 5 mins.

So thank you Raptor, as for everyone else...

I have now got the network of 5 computers, connected to a 16 port switch running, with a FILE server too. Soon it will be attached to the main network which consists of about 100 computers.

So for being 15 years old, with no practical experience (other than my network at home which has 10 computers), I think i've done alright. Didn't learn anything but it was an experience.

So all is well. without those two other computers, there would have not been much point connecting just 3 computers to the network.I had good intentions all long... I was telling the truth, yet no one belived me (except Raptor). So I guess I'll lie next time when something like this comes up I'll have to lie?, so then people don't think I'm going to do anything BAD with the information and will just TELL me without me trying to con the information.

I should have called this thread "can't boot from CD" instead, would have saved me the trouble, well atleast i sorted it out before it was too late. For future reference; how did you access that Lenovo recovery wizard?

We have like 100 of these computers in the school, but these five were strange, they just wouldn't boot off another device.

I pressed Enter repeatedly (to interrupt normal startup). then it gave me a list. It went something like this:

1. boot from device
2. run diagnostics
3. repair system

Boot from device didn't work, so I selected the diagnostic option (I CANT remember the exact name of the option though, it was something more like 2. enter lenovo diagnostics and settings or something along those lines.

So once selecting the diagnostic, it booted up and entered the lenovo diagnostic thing. You could reset the admin password, but you needed to answer 3 security questions. Unfortunately we were unable to contact the admin who left out school, we couldn't reset it. So in the lenovo diagnostics, you can choose to boot from a device, then it asks to restart and you click yes. It will then allow you to boot from a device. I don't understand why you can't just use F12 at startup, those computers were weird. Yet there are many others in the school that allow you to boot USING F12.

So I booted up from a CD which had Ophcrack on it. First off I entered the graphical mode, but it lagged, so I rebooted into the CLI mode and it cracked it in about 5 minutes.

Haha, then I had people asking me for a copy of the CD, I'm like "Nope"... then they are like, where can i donload it? - "I'm not telling" ;pAh, thanks. Might come in handy. Well, good job and see you around.

Solve : HELP!!!!!!!!!! Windows XP startup issues!?

Answer»

I have Windows XP and I was watching an online streaming video. The image froze while the audio kept playing. I tired pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL a few times but it wasn't at all responding. So, I turned off the on/off switch and restarted the computer. BUT now my computer starts off with this prompt that asks me to choose between safe mode, safe mode with command prompt, normal startup, and last working configuration... and no matter what I select everytime, the computer keeps restarting over and over again. WHAT can I do to save my computer? I have some very very important files that I need for my final exams in the next week and I'm freaking out here! HELP!well if NONE of those work LIKE safemdoe and stuff then hurry up and use LINUX to get your files back and then reformatIf you have the Windows CD, I would try a Repair INSTALL:
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htmIs there an option CALLED "Disable automatic reboot on system failure?" If so, try that. Your computer will show a Blue Screen Of Death. Write down everything on it and post it here.

Solve : pc wont download certain programs, wont restore etc.?

Answer»

Hi, I just started using my moms pc and its been given me a few issues. something was wrong with the harddrive so that was replaced and windows was reinstalled.

Issues
1. When Im doing a specific google search and click on the search link they take me to different websites.
2. I've TRIED to download certain programs such as msn messenger and im being told Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage. That also happens when im trying to visit certain sites for instance www.avg.com
3.I recently downloaded avg from mininova but its not allowing me to update the antivirus or the antispyware. Ive tried to get it from download.com and its also saying the same thing.
4.I am also now getting a runtime error whenever I restart the computer ill post exactly what it says in a min.

please can somebody HELP. Im plucking out the little hair I have left on my head!!

What Operating System is this?

What Antivirus do you have now?

Can you try Firefox? Also any FIREWALL installed on that machine ? ?
The browser re-direction may be a sign of an infection...Hi yeh its a windows XP Im using. Ive installedThe avg anti virus software but like I said its not LETTING me update the antivirus or antispyware.

the message that im now getting when I restart my pc is -Component 'MSWINSCK.OCX'or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid-

I have a hijackthis log should I post it?

I've tried using firefox and it does the same, also I've tried a few time to restore the pc to another date and its giving me errors or not starting.Winsock Fix

This may or may not fix the issue but running it won't harm anything. This very much sounds like a virus or other RELATED issue. Does the pc have multiple hard drives? or just one? Was the pc running fine when you first did a clean install of windows? If so, it's possible you attained a virus or have been hacked after you installed windows. The fact that it's not letting you browse the internet, or update your virus definitions suggests a virus. If all else fails, try reformatting and doing yet another clean install, and make sure to get anti virus software and a decent firewall immediately.

Solve : Opening dot files?

My computer came with Micro Office installed with a free 30 day trial. After the trial period I didn't buy because I didn't need it. Later I decided to delete the software to free up space. Now I can't open dot files. Do I need Office installed in order to open dot files? Thanks. Go to folder options in your control panel (Assuming you're using XP) and correct the problem by setting a new program to open .dot files with.

Thanks Raptor. I do have XP. I added the dot file and selected IE because it was the recommended program. I still couldn't open the dot files. However, while doing this I noticed I didn't have doc files either. So, I added the doc file type and the run program was automatically set as WordPad. Now I can open doc files - so I have made some progress.

I changed the run program from IE to Adobe for the dot extension just to experiment. When I tried to open the dot file I got a message saying Adobe couldn't open the file because of several possible reasons, eg the file was originally an attachment to an email, etc.

Then I changed the dot program to WordPad. I can now open the dot files but they contain jibberish in some SPOTS but look good in others.

Any other suggestions?Since it's Word Document Template, I don't think, you can open it with ANYTHING else, but Word.Quote from: Broni on December 17, 2008, 08:38:30 PM
Since it's Word Document Template, I don't think, you can open it with anything else, but Word.

WRONG! *POP*

Oh wait, you're right! Well that's refreshing for a change!

You're indeed going to need Microsoft Office to open .dot files.
ALTHOUGH you could see if any of the free Office packages (IE: Open Office) works.

Solve : always get stuck!?

Answer»

hi, i've got a problem with my windows that made me frustrated!

my laptop keeps freezing:

1. after i turn on my computer and enter my password, my laptop suddenly freezes!

2. or IF i'm lucky and MANAGE to open the windows, when i try to open my INTERNET explorer or firefox, my laptop freezes too!

And when these happen, Ctrl + ALT + Del doesn't work; START MENU doesn't work, but it seems that I still move my mouse cursor!

Any idea what's happening to my computer?

And does anyone know how to SOLVE it?

thanks~First you need to answer a few questions.

1) Have you had problems or any errors prior to it freezing?
2) What OS are you using?
3) Give me the stats of your laptop.

It is also possible you have a virus, or a conflict with your system files. Is there anything on it that you need? A clean install of your OS would surely solve the problem. If there's items you need, then you can do a repair install.

Hear back from you soon...

Solve : No signal and beeps?

I used my computer and turned it off. When I came BACK it turns on and gives 6 long beeps. There is no signal on monitor. USB outputs don't react. Fans work. Can open cd drive. how do i fix it. Welcome to the CH forums.

First you have to give some details of your pc. PLEASE read this..

Go here and follow the instructions. You may just have a defective keyboard..

thanks but unplugging the keyboard didn't work-what can i try now What you can do is provide info on your pc as requested.

I found this but the beep codes don't match your description: http://www.techbase.iofm.net/tips/applemac/tip1.htm

Sorry, can offer no further assistance if you fail to answer questions.it's a Microsoft XP computer to the latest UPDATE (not my mac this time soz) i don't have any antivirus on it but its not connected to the internet so it shouldn't matter. its got a 2.66ghz processor and a nvidia geforce 5600(or something in the 5000's). my XP edition is the HOME one. soz that's all i know and sorry for not listening to your instructions. PS i tried switching keyboards and that didn't work Microsoft does not build computers...
DLoad and install Everest Home...
Run the Computer summary scan and save it to a text file...
Copy and PASTE it here.It is possible you have some bad diodes, or something is wrong with your hardware. The beeps are to notify you of the problem.

Solve : Select the operating system to start?

Answer»

Lisa, Essentially yes. As you will be doing a complete removal and re formatt i don't forsee the use of the "recovery" disc but certainly the O/S system disc is fundamental to your gaining the use of the computer via a reinstall. How do you feel re the descriptions provided in my link? Do you feel ok about proceeding? It might serve you well to read them over a few times until you feel comfortable about starting the process. I feel given your replies above that you can only improve your situation as at the present time all you have is a dust collector. truenorth
P.S. Have a look at this as well. http://www.ehow.com/how_6026_format-hard-drive.htmlI have looked over both sites you referenced, and although both appear to be easy enogh to understand, they both require booting from the cd drive and this computer does not seem to be able to do this??Lisa,I have a bit of confusion as to the exact nature of the CD drive in your laptop. From one of your POSTS there seems to be a reference to it working with some other disks other than the O/S disks. Is that so? If yes what were those disks? Also if other disks work in the drive what do they do to indicate that they are working? Also can you put any CD disk in the drive and regardless of whether it plays or not can you actually select and open the drive to access a disk or put a disk in? If the answer is yes then at least you have power working on the drive. You were asked by another CH member as to the physical connections vis-a -vis your hardrive and CD drive. Are you able to determine that? Are they on the same ide cable or on separate cables? I must tell you while i have delved into the innards of many desktop PC i have never (yet) had the opportunity to get inside a laptop. It is my understanding they are much more difficult to work on so i do appreciate your trepidation. I don't believe you replied as to any continued access to the "Friend" that sold you this laptop. I feel if they are still available they should make this right for you. I don't know if you want to spend any more money in regards to this computer but as i suggested earlier USB connectable floppy drives are available at very little cost and would allow you to try the floppy route to reformat. I am including another reference this time to do with malfunctioning Cd drives in the hopes it may point to something that brings about an "AH HA" moment. truenorth http://articles.techrepublic.com.com/5100-10878_11-1043936.htmlI apologize for any confusion.

The CD drive does work, for instance I can put the widows Xp pro disk in and the following menu comes up,

Welcome to MS windows XP
what do you want to do
Install XP
Learn more about set up
Install optional windows components
Perform additional task
Check system compatibility

Un fortunately when I reboot the computer it does not boot from this drive.

Again unfortunately I do not have access to the "friend"

I guess I should looking into the purchase of the floppy drive and usb cable

Thanks, Lisa, If when you put the XP Operating system disk in and it asks you "what do you want to do" and offers a choice of "install Xp" what happens if at that point you chose "install XP"? If you do decide to purchase a USB connectable floppy drive there is no need to additionally purchase a USB cable. It will come with one attached to the floppy drive. While with a bit of searching USB floppy drives can be found for under $10.00 here are a few links to help you along the way. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/category/category_slc.asp?CatId=287
http://www.geeks.com/products_sc.asp?cat=742
http://www.compusa.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2143215&Sku=D15-1078
http://www.circuitcity.com/ccd/productDetail.do?oid=150498
I wouldn't yet run out and buy anything as from your reply you "DO" have a functioning CD drive. So it should be possible to move from that to reinstalling your operating system from the CD you have (unless there is something wrong with the CD itself). At this point (given that it is a legit copy of the XP O/S) i would appreciate that someone else make a comment on whether an issue exists if this particular O/S disk which may have been associated with another computer will present a problem if it is attempted to be installed on another computer other than the one it was sold with.
Don't give up yet. truenorth
well, when i choose install, i believe the next option is to install new or repair I have tried both and although the computer does appear to have sped up a little, i still have the question when the computer is first turned on to select an operating system with one additional option XP set up?

Thanks againLisa, It does sound like there has begun a process to install a new and complete version of XP from your CD by virtue of the appearance of the new added option of "XP SETUP". I suspect that you did not allow the installation to continue long enough when you last selected the option to fully install (not repair) the O/S. I suggest you select the "XP setup" choice and let us know what happens. It should lead you through the process of reinstalling ( a slightly exaggerated statement--as i don't believe XP was ever properly installed on that computer). You will be asked to confirm that you really do want to reinstall the O/S and also you should be warned that you will lose all data currently on the computer.let us know your results, goodluck, truenorth
P.S. make sure the XP O/S disc is in the CD drive when you start this process.
P.S.P.S.If the computer that your doing this process on is the only one you have prior to starting it may serve you well to print out a copy of one of the data/explanation of installing a new O/S that i sent you the links to before you begin so that you will have something to guide you.Format and install which operating system you want; of course if you do not have important data on it. If you have, save all your data and after that format it. OK, I will have to guess that at this point I have probally made it worse.
When I went to do the install I got the following message for several file really probally 20.

Setup cannot copy the file: win_dos.chm
retry press enter
esc to skip

After retrying on each file several times a chose to skip. In hind site probally a bad decision.

When the computer rebooted I now get the following message:

STOP: c0000135 {unable to locate component}
This application has failed to start because winsrv was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.

I receive this message whenever I turn off and restart the computer??Lisa, I know that things seem to have gotten worse. However i do not think that.Obviously the Cd drive is working properly. The fact that you chose to skip some items that it claimed were missing does not make your situation worse. But it does indicate something is amiss with the data contained on the O/S disc (likely incomplete). However i am going to request on your behalf that some software and format experts on the CH forums come on-board to help you. I have done this process a few times usually with assistance from forum members--so i do not concider myself an expert on this. However there certainly are some on here. I actually feel more confident about your likelyhood of gaining use of the computer now than i did earlier due to the things that have occur ed. Hopefully the light at the end of the tunnel is getting closer. If Patio or Broni read this perhaps they will come back in now with these new developments. I shall continue to monitor the posts in this thread as i don't want to miss the eureka moment. goodluck, truenorthQuote from: Lisa010262 on December 15, 2008, 12:15:38 PM

You EITHER have a dirty CD or CD drive. Try cleaning the CD. If that doesn't work, swap out the CD drive.
When you go back into setup, make sure you follow this order:
1. Delete partitions (all of them)
2. Create a partition
3. Format your partition (to set up windows on selected item press enter)Ok, Sorry I haven't been back sooner. In my frustration I was playing around with the few thinks I could do with this computer when I got to the BIOS screen and found an area where you could enable\disable the computer to read a boot drive it was disabled. When I enabled it I was able to boot from the system disk and restore the computer to it original factory setting! which I have done, and as of this point all is well!! Again thank you for your time and efforts.Lisa, Are we in a celebration YAHOO! situation here? Does this MEAN that you now have a fully installed fully functioning NEW XP O/S on your laptop? Solve : running letters?

Answer»

I have a Sony laptop and a girl spilled BEER on my keyboard and no the letter f runs across the screen and I can not get it to to stop sometimes. I have to use a second keyboard and I was wondering if anyone knows how to lock the main keyboard so that it is disabled but so that I can use my wireless one. Any help would be apprectiated thanksWireless will produce the worst results in this situation...grab a PS2 keyboard and see if this helps
On some laptops it is relatively easy to remove the keyboard...at any rate it NEEDS to be dried out thoroughly.
Warm NOT HOT blown air from a hair dryer works pretty well but you have to be patient.it has been dried out for a week. the girl didnt tell me about it so i actually have a usb keyboard plugged in but i just wanna disable the laptop keyboardThis is why i suggested a PS2 keyboard...it happens automatically. If you want to physically isolate the keyboard, remove it from the laptop and and you should be able to disconnect the ribbon cable attached to the underside. If you are not sure how to remove the keyboard - some laptop keyboards are very non-intuitive - see if you can download the service manual from the maker's website. But you may yet be able to save the keyboard.

The problem with any kind of spill is that although it may dry out, it leaves a residue which may be corrosive and may also re-absorb moisture when the air turns a bit humid, causing a return of the problem. To fix this, remove the keyboard from the laptop COMPLETELY and wash it - yes, I mean wash it - in distilled (demineralised) water, which you can buy from the supermarket. FOLLOW up with a good rinse in methylated spirits. Together these treatments will wash away any kind of residue. Drain the keyboard and let it dry thoroughly in a warm environment for at least several days.

If you remove the keyboard take care not to dislodge any of the keys; they can be extremely difficult to fit BACK again.Don't spend any more time with that girl.
If the laptop is under warranty, have Sony send out a new keyboard to you. Just don't tell them how the problem occurred.

please help?
The best program to run when there is a corrupt system file is:

sfc /scannow

sfc ( system file checker ) will check system file and replace the bad ones.

You will need the OS installation disk.

C:\>sfc /?

Microsoft(R) Windows XP Windows File Checker Version 5.1
(C) 1999-2000 Microsoft Corp. All rights reserved

Scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versi

SFC [/SCANNOW] [/SCANONCE] [/SCANBOOT] [/REVERT] [/PURGECACHE] [/CACHESIZE=x]

/SCANNOW Scans all protected system files immediately.
/SCANONCE Scans all protected system files once at the NEXT boot.
/SCANBOOT Scans all protected system files at every boot.
/REVERT Return scan to default setting.
/PURGECACHE Purges the file cache.
/CACHESIZE=x Sets the file cache size.

C:\>

You can use start, Run [ sfc /scannow ] or DOSaah rightt ok thank you...but..
how do i get that disk??
Microsoft might send you one. If you are using XP SP3 Home, you should be able to find a copy of XP SP3 Home at any retail store or computer shop.

If your friend has the same XP Home OS, borrow his disk. Microsoft will allow a fix like sfc fix from any Disk with the same OS.

Good Luck

Solve : Mac 8.5 zip drive to windows xp?

I have a lot of DATA & jpegs on Zip discs and want to drag them into my Windows XP computer. Also, is there a cable I can buy to convert scsi to usb to make the connection?

Lindy, Belkin and Adaptec all make USB to SCSI adapter cables. The Lindy one in the picture costs areound 50 UK POUNDS, around 75 US dollars.

On a desktop computer if it has a spare PCI slot you can get a SCSI card and plug the zip drive into that.

Solve : HELP! Cannot Start Computer At All!?

Answer»

Hello,

I am having major issues with starting up my laptop. It is a Dell Inspiron 6000 running Windows XP and just recently had an automatic windows update (other than that, nothing has been downloaded recently).

When I try starting up the computer, it gives me a blue screen of death when the windows LOGON page is SUPPOSED to load. The BSOD gives me the error code STOP: C000021a, and that a "fatal error has occured". It also gives this code: 0xC000012f.

I have tried booting in safe mode, but no success. Have also tried booting from the last known good configuration, but also with no success. Any suggestions on how I can resolve this problem??? Is it possible to resolve this issue without losing data on my harddrive?? I'm hoping it's not serious enough to require a reformat .

Thanks in advance!
Go Here-->http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

Note:
A Repair Install will replace the system files with the files on the XP CD used for the Repair Install. It will leave your applications and settings intact, but Windows updates will need to be reapplied.

I just did the repair install as you had suggested. But after the system restarted, I ended up with the same BSOD, with the exception of one code.

Previous BSOD: STOP: C000021a, and that a "fatal error has occured". It also gives this code: 0xC000012f.

Current BSOD: STOP: C000021a, and that a "fatal error has occured". It also gives this code: 0xC0000135.Unfortunately the blue screen is what most windows users dread! If the repair install did not work I would suggest typing the error into a search engine such as yahoo and do some research on the problem. If it comes to worst, you will have to reformat. Unfortunately, if you ask me, a CLEAN install is always RECOMMENDED. It will be sure to fix your problem.

In that case, we've been wasting time here. You need to contact IT department.all I wanted to know is when is an administrator account not really and administrator account

it's not an IT dept issue.

There is no reason to fiddle with work computer, since it's not even your property.
Certainly, we can't help you here.I'm not fiddling with it

all I wanted to know is when is an administrator account not really and administrator account

all this has to do with is page defrag from sysinternals

which when run says "...must be run from an admin. account"
but in User accounts it says the accounts are in the Administrators group

If it is a work PC that came without a CD then don't you have a hidden restore on the thing to make a one time BACKUP disk....MUMBLE,mumble,
mumble........Where is it at ?Does your IT know? ?there's C: which is 100GB and a small a 39MB partition but that certainly couldn't contain an entire copy of windows and the REST of the pre-installed junk

I don't think there's an issue here.
Your getting a prompt for administrator privileges since you are not an administrator of the computer, if you are using a network login, and if that network login isnt configured to be an administrator, then no matter what the local computer accounts say they are, your not an administrator, and you can not run programs that require administrator privledges.

Programs that access anything under Windows that need modify and write capabilities, and sometimes under Program Files, and programs that are programmed to run only with Administrator will not run under a regular user account.

You may be able to run the Windows Disk Defragmenter, located under:
Start> All Programs/Programs> Accessories> System Tools.

Page Defrag does a few THINGS your administrator wouldent want you to do:
Adds a pre-Windows-Boot startup item (common for viruses, thus restricted)
Accesses, and modifies the Registry file, and the pagefile. ALSO common of viruses, and thus restricted.

If you want special software installed, you do need to contact your IT Department, and ask them to make you an administrator of your work computer, or ask them to install it for you.
You have ADMIN rights on the machine...
However they are LIMITED because it's not your machine...

This is when an Admin account is NOT REALLY an Admin account.Quote from: Richard FDisk on November 30, 2008, 12:16:18 PM

I'm not fiddling with it

all I wanted to know is when is an administrator account not really and administrator account

If you're not dealing with Vista, and the computer is not joined to a domain, then the answer is "none of the time." If a user account is in the "Administrators" group, then it's an administrator.

However, since this is a work PC, it's probably joined to a domain, in which your LOCAL ADMINISTRATOR account is not a DOMAIN ADMINISTRATOR account.

Quote
all this has to do with is page defrag from sysinternals

which when run says "...must be run from an admin. account"
but in User accounts it says the accounts are in the Administrators group

You shouldn't be running stuff on a work PC without the permission of the powers to be. Even if it is a sysinternals utility.

Contact your work IT department with your request. If they feel it's important, they'll grant your user account the appropriate rights (of course you have to be connected to the work network first for the new settings to take effect).

Solve : Opening Files help?

Answer»

I am RUNNING Coreldraw 11. and I have Win XP PRO

This just started today
When I go to open a File I saved with Coreldraw or I go to open the Coreldraw Program I get a Windows Screen that tells me the File can not be found.

Even if I just go to start the Coreldraw Program it says can't find file.

So I whent to a File I know is good and that I made in Coreldraw and I hold the Sift Key Down and Right Click on the File.

And I when to Open With and Browsed for the Coreldraw Program to make shure it was still linked to the Coreldraw Program.

And then I put a Chaeck Mark in Use this Option Always.

My Coreldraw Files still don't open and my Coreldraw Program still wont start.

But here is the STRANG thing all of my Coreldraw Files still are visable and they all say CDR for Coreldraw extanson.

So I defragmented my Hard Drive and that did not work.
I would hate to re INSTALL the whole Program again.
Can anyone help???Quote from: nymph4 on December 12, 2008, 08:33:19 PM

I would hate to re install the whole Program again.
Can anyone help???

you MOVED the installation, or deleted it. You will need to reinstall.OKhere is ONE more thing.

It does work off and on and.

I when into my Firewall and added Coreldraw to the Aplications List and then it worked.
Then when I clossed the Coreldraw Program and opened it again it did not work.

So I think it must still be in the computer. So you installed Comodo against the advice given to fix a Windows issue ? ?
Now Corel is ACTING up ? ?

Ok I know I whent into Ad Remove Programs and click on The Repair Option in the Corldraw Un Install Window and it did seem to wok.

Now when I click on a Coreldraw File I put on the Desktop a window comes up.
Windows Can Not Find and then it gives the Path to the File and it it just on my Desktop and it is the right Path.

So I just Un Installed the whole Program and Re Installed it again and it still wont work.

Some times it opens some times the program wont start I do not think it is the Program.

Solve : Resizing a partition?

Answer»

Hi there.
I have Windows XP Sp2 with 160GB Hard drive. This is split in 2 partitions. Drive C is 8MB and is designated as FAT. It is FULL in capacity.
Drive H is 150GB and is designated as NTFS. And this one only has 50GB used and 100GB free.

I have problems with installing Windows SP3 because I get the message that it cannot be installed. As there is insufficient memory available. It apparently goes direct to the C drive. I have also noticed that in both drives there is a Windows folder. In windows C the size is 7.88MB, whilst in Drive H the windows folder size is 2.50GB. Incidentally the drives of D, E, F, and G are allocated to the various plug in cards.
I can see several options for this. Either increase the C partition, whilst this of course reduces the H partition. Or eliminate 1 partition altogether. I only have 1 Hard drive unit.
I don't want to reformat the computer if at all possible. And I believe there are software utilities which allows me to do this. I prefer a freebie one as I won't be using it any further in this regards.
Can anybody help me. See the attached data.
Wishing you all the best of Christmas.

Your computer may also have Recovery Partition. There is no other way around.how WOULD i kno if i have a recovery partition? What is the brand, and model of your computer? How old?Emachine
Model Number is t5026
Its about 8 years oldRestart computer, and watch the screen closely.
At some point, while still with black screen, you'll SEE some options at the bottom of the screen.
If you see something like:
F11 - recovery/restoration (or something similar)
it means, you have Recovery Partition.
(I believe, it's F11 key in eMachines case)
If you press F11, you may/may not have further options:

Non-Destructive System Restore (Recommended) recovers the operating system, all programs, and hardware drivers that were installed at the factory. Your data files should not be DAMAGED with this process.

Full System Restore (Destructive) reformats the hard drive and restores the system software as it was when you purchased your computer. Your data files are not restored with this process.I think il go with the second option
cuz id like to start from scratch with this computer

once i do that
wont i need a disk or TWO
to do another process of installing Windows again? No. You should be OK. The computer will be restored to its original state, like you got it from the store.
If any problem arises, check here: http://emachines.com/support/product_support.html?cat=Desktops&subcat=T%20Series&model=T5026, or post back.ThanksYou're welcome well

Solve : Old Computer (need a lot of help)?

Answer»

I got my old computer. It's an old Dell with Windows 98. I can't change the settings on it. The resolution is huge. When I try to change the colors or resolution the Ok button is off the screen. I PRESS enter instead but then it says it has to restart. After it restarts, nothing changes! It doesn't change in safe mode EITHER. Does anyone know what COULD be wrong with it or anything I can do to make it run better? Thanks. Well, if you have the original disk, you could reload it. Most of today's periphials won't run with Win 98. If you could GET a copy of Windows 2000 PRO and load it, it might work. It is very similar to XP only without all the extra graphics, and it can get by on about the same RAM as Win 98. But as old as the computer is, it may be ready for the boneyard pretty soon.It looks like you need to reinstall video driver.

Solve : Better way to open Windows Task Manager????

Answer»

I'm looking for a better way to open Windows XP Windows task manager. The ctrl-alt-del is too cumbersome requireing two hands and for me to remove one hand from the mouse. I'd like a shortcut in the on the desktop or quicklaunchbar.

Is this possible??

ThanksIt sure is! All you need to do, is create a shortcut on your desktop; point it to taskmgr.exe

Then; it you would like it in your quick-launch bar, you can simply drag it there. Quick and painless! Plus too - add the shortcut to start up folder and it'll come up at boot if you want it handy.

I run a very shrunk TM tucked at top corner of my 2nd monitor - just to keep an eye on CPU activity - and it can always stay minimized anyways if need be.Now that you describe the "How-To" I now think how silly I was not to have known. EVERY time I invoke task manager with ctrl-alt-del, taskmgr.exe shows up in the list! Duh! brain-gas...

Thanks for the reply.

I managed to find the exe in:
Code: [Select]C:\WINDOWS\System32
For some reason, though, find files/folders did not pick it up. Is there a reason for this? ....and a fix!!

No fix. This is how crappy Windows search is.
I use SuperFinder (free): http://freewarewiki.com/SuperFinder. It installs under right click menu.I used to use a program I made when I first started using XP, I HATED... Hate, actually, the search interface used by Explorer aww, look at the cute little puppy! I want to find files darn it! annoying to navigate.

Anyway- so as a demonstration of my File Handling Library I wrote in Visual Basic, I duplicated the Find Tool from WIN98 (the interface and so forth)

it WORKED GREAT; but there were INCOMPATIBILITIES with the code and XP; mostly oriented towards my extraction of file icons and alpha channels; other then that it worked great.

But; my flash drive failed, and I accidentally sent a CD RW drives BIOS flash to the hard drive I was using to store data; strangely reduced it's total capacity by 2GB (from only 4GB) and made it's contents unreadable.

VERY bad point in my coding history.

And that is why I can't use it anymore, it's almost as if it never existed...

I rewrote, or am rewriting the libraries I lost, and then my major apps; this time I get to rearchitecture them to try to solve problems I had coding them before.

Solve : Windows ME will not start?

Answer»

Don't worry...I'll wait for suggestions, FDISK didn't seem to be the right place to be, and format scared the heck out of me....Fdisk did ask about "enable large disk support" and not to use it if I intend to install multiple OS....interesting...again ahead of myself....is that smoke I smell?the "enable large disk" support feature enables the FAT32 filesystem, which is fairly universally supported nowadays; without it, your stuck with FAT16. a FAT16 partition can only be about 2GB in size. Since your ideal config calls for Windows/Ubuntu on a dual boot, you want windows on there first; since setup is encountering errors, your doing the best thing in the situation; formatting the drive completely.

with fdisk, I recommend splitting your hard drive into the separate Ubuntu and windows partitions; on the other hand, the Ubuntu install let's you resize an existing partition and install it into a new partition.

You are definitely on the right track, though; I'd use fdisk to delete all partitions (assuming you haven't any important data that hasn't been backed up) and recreate them; then reboot and try to install windows again.Windows ME has started!!!!

With this success I fear the work has just begun.

As this is an older computer, seems I can't remember the hardwear, and am having a hard if not impossible time finding drivers.

Is there a "broad brush", a collection of common drivers, that might get me started? One install disk I did find was my DSL internet disk, but I need a driver for video card for higher resolution for it to load.

I'm not trying to be lazy, and am looking through some boxes.......I was hoping to use the internet to analyze the system to find the drivers. no problem, my friend!

If you download and install Everest Home, run it, and create a text file report and attach it to your next post, It'll give all your hardware details and I'll help you find some drivers for them

And then once ME is ready to go; you can try to get Ubuntu dual-booting on the machine, if you're up to it. Should be relatively painless (Installer does the hard work thank goodness).I think this is it, it seems kind of big I hope it is ok to post.

As always, thank you!

It looks like your network card is working.

Let me know, of course, if any of these don't work or you have any problems BC you are the MAN!

Chipset software is in. The video driver is in. Internet is up.

Sound is still a problem.

"Setup was unable to detect the full set of files required for the SoundBlaster PCI128 (drivers only) Web Update program"

"Please ensure you have downloaded the complete set of files before running this Setup program"

The whole time we've been at this, I've been running two computers, the broken Dell and the functional but kind of SLOW family computer, connected with a KVM switch, while using a thumb drive to transfer files. Now, thankfully, I will be able to download directly to the Dell.
interesting; I had the exact same problem trying to install the drivers for my old sound card on 98SE just recently.

I'm running out of time right now though, (gotta go to work )

If I don't pass out right when I get home we'll see if we can get your sound working too.

Then if you're still up to it we can venture into getting Ubuntu installed alongside your windows installation.

In the meantime- check device manager- any exclamation marks? (my guess would be "multimedia controller") or something similar.

Just go to dells website and enter your service tag and all of the drivers that you need will be available for download.

Solve : Boot options?

Answer»

Hi,

I have an old desktop (1995). It's running W95a. There are no boot options in the BIOS and I am unable to boot from either (a) FLOPPY or (b) CD ROM on restart so I can't now make CHANGES before getting into Windows.

Have tried pressing a keyboard button to prompt but it just beeps. Any ideas?

Thanks, TimAny bootable floppy should boot automatically on that MACHINE...
Bootdisk.com is a good source.
What are you trying to do ? ?Basically, I just want to run a floppy or cd disk before it gets into Windows.

It's an AST 812 from 1995 and the person I got it from had a funny way of getting it to boot from floppy\cdr which I forgot...

Isn't there a shortcut or special key to prompt the system into running a floppy or cdr?

I'm not sure how to get a free BIOS update for this spec (if it needs it - my system is rejecting most external scans etc. probably because it is W95a), but I'll have to get it to recognise my floppy or cdr before Windows first...If you flash the BIOS you risk creating a LARGE paperweight you won't be able to use...
You have been warned. As patio said, any bootable floppy will boot.
What's gonna be on that floppy?
BIOS update is not recommended, unless it's necessary for some SERIOUS reason.

It is a gigabyte motherboard. If that helps. As I SAID, I don't mind too much, but I would like a faster boot.Quote from: paudashlake on December 06, 2008, 08:07:22 AM

What does that mean? Please clarify.Meaning, when I turn it on, It goes to the black screen with all the bios and settings and junk on it, and that takes a good chunk of time.Quote from: paudashlake on December 06, 2008, 08:19:29 AM
Meaning, when I turn it on, It goes to the black screen with all the bios and settings and junk on it, and that takes a good chunk of time.

The trouble is, what you call "a good chunk of time" might be what somebody else calls a "fleeting instant". So some actual times would be nice So how long does the boot screen stay on screen? Ten seconds? Five minutes? Not TOO long, but long enough to be a little irratating. About 30-40 secondshmm, have you enabled any "quick boot" option in the CMOS setup? My computer takes forever to do the full POST (almost a full minute, my RAM is maxed out), but less then a second with quick boot enabled.Agreed, sometimes called "quick memory check".
Okay. I completely forgot about that! YOUSEE, my old compaq laptop never had any of these screens, ao it has BEN a while since I 've used one.

Solve : Access to the CD in a drive?

Answer»

When I put a CD-RW in my CD drive and try to access it I receive an error message: F: is not access able, incorrect function.
I have tried to format the disk but I am not allowed to format the disk.
I have a Windows XP professional. These are new Memorex disks with up to 12x speed. I was told it could GO at a lower speed when I purchased the disks. Maybe I have disks that are too fast?

In the past I had no PROBLEMS formating or saving to CDs.
I would appreciate your help. Thanks

Do you have any third-party CD-RW programs (Roxio Direct-to-Disc, for EXAMPLE)?Is your drive CD ROM, or CD RW?Quote from: Broni on December 13, 2008, 11:46:12 PM

Is your drive CD ROM, or CD RW?

Probably the latter...

If this is a desktop shortcut the shortcut may be hosed...or if you are using a flash drive or card reader on that machine it may have re-assigned drive letters rendering the shortcut useless...
Try opening it from Windows Explorer or My Computer.
If this produces no joy-joy go to DEVICE Manager and find the drive...right click it and select remove/uninstall...you will recieve a warning ...ignore it.
Upon re-boot Windows will automatically re-install it.

Solve : cannot find server??

Answer»

I recently installed windows XP and when i try to go online I get a SCREEN that says "the page cannot be displayed." At the bottom of the screen, in the TASK bar, the window says "cannot find server." I was hoping someone might be able to help.

Did you re-install your motherboard drivers after the re-install ? ?
These will be on a Driver CD that CAME with the machine and will include your network hardware drivers...
You MAY have to setup your connection again as well.I have an older dell optiplex gx270 I bought at an auction sight. I donot have any of the driver CD's that would have came with the machine. Do you think I can go to Dell,s website to get the drivers.Actually I just went to dells web site and dowloaded and installed the drivers. I am online. Thank you for the help patio.Excellent News...
