Solve : Looking for a free Excel Tutorial?

Answer»

Hi! everyone! i would like some help, i'm looking for a Excel free tutorial either 2003 or 2007. I need to practice ALOT and in advance feature, i will be PERFORMING some work on it at a new COMPANY..

Can someone please help?Well, you'd better determine whether you'll be using Excel 2003 or Excel 2007 at the new company because the two versions are much different.

Microsoft has some nice TUTORIALS online. For Excel 2003, see http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/excel/HA011161281033.aspx and http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/training/CR061831141033.aspx

There are many other online "tutorials". You might browse some of these: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=excel+tutorial&aq=f&oq=

Well i dont no yet which the company is using, but just to be on save side, i better practice on both of them. Post me the link of the u have.

ThanksQuote from: lino124 on December 03, 2008, 08:05:30 AM

... i better practice on both of them. Post me the link of the u have.

What do you mean, a link for Excel 2007? Just visit the Microsoft links in my PREVIOUS post and look for the links on those pages for Office/Excel 2007.

Solve : Will this computer run XP Professional?

Answer»

I have been given a second hand computer and would like to know if I load WINDOWS XP profesiona will iy run OK. The computer information is as follows:
Accer Power SXb
X86 based pc
Processor Celeron 733MHz
If any more information is required please let me know what is required.
How much RAM?

How big hard drive?

Your name for thread title is foolish. Better would be, "Will this computer run XP Professional?"

Ram 128Mb

H/D 18GbIt'll run it- but it will be somewhat sluggish, depending on your intended purpose.

I worked with a 350Mhz AMD K6-2 with that amount of RAM, and a 2GB hard drive and 8GB second drive. It worked OK, but it took severe tweaking of the startups and services and so forth to get it running smoothly.Altough it would be technically possible to run XP on that computer I wouldn't try it. It will be incredibly slow with that amount of RAM. Windows 98 or even 2000 would be a better CHOICE.
Have you CONSIDERED linux?Quote from: JJ 3000 on December 02, 2008, 09:16:59 PM

Altough it would be technically possible to run XP on that computer I wouldn't try it.

I lived it.

2000 would probably be a much better choice, though.

Solve : Frozen on Blue Screen while Shutting Down?

Answer»

My computer froze while shutting down on the blue screen that says MS Windows. I finally had to hold the power button down to SHUT it off. Now when I turn it on, it appears to be booting up windows, then returns to that shut down blue screen and hangs there. I have tried F8, tried to boot in safe mode, tried to boot with last known config that WORKED, etc. It always returns to that blue screen. Can anyone help?Start your computer back up and tap F8 to get into the advanced startup options. Here, choose "Disable automatic restarts on system failure" This should keep it from restarting. The blue screen error message should stay on the screen now. Write down that error and post back with it.

Have you made any hardware or software changes latley?
Do you have your windows CD?Okay. I did that. It does the same thing. I get the black MS Windows XP start-up screen with the little lights going back and forth and then it goes black and then it goes to the blue screen that says MS Windows XP that appears right before shutting down, but it doesn't move after that. It just sits there. I don't think I have the original disks, but I'll look. You have to keep tapping F8 repeatedly as the computer is first TURNED on before windows starts to load. No, I meant I did tap F8 and get the choices. I checked it not to AUTOMATICALLY restart and what I wrote above is what happened.

I'm still looking for the original CD. It's a Dell Dimension3000.No original disk. Warranty expired in 2006. None of the options in the F8 window work. There is no error message or dialogue box. No matter which option I choose, it starts to boot and then moves that blue screen you see when shutting down.Your hard drive may be corrupted. Run hard drive diagnostics
http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287I've saved the website, maybe I can use it at some point. Right now, I would if I could run anything. It won't let me do anything at all.those are bootable disks that dont require windows to runOh okay - I'll GIVE it a try. Thank you!

Solve : I lost sound and have a funky display/font?

Answer»

I think its because I did something to the registry but not sure. I recently had the antivirus pro 2009 virus and managed to get rid of it, I think. While in the registry I clicked "modify" after right clicking on one of the registrys. I thought it would give me more options, as I was only curious to see what the modify function would do. Well right after that the display changed. On the desktop all the icons are taller and more narrow. The font changed and is now smaller and harder to read. If I up the resolution it gets harder to read. I noticed later that I also have no audio. Pretty sure its related. No SYSTEM sound or device sound. I dont remember where in the registry I was but the file name had a few initials( I forget what) then the number 6 service pack 2. It read _____6 service pack 2. It was not internet explorer 6 service pack 2 or at least thats not what it read. I have since reinstalled service pack 2 and 3 but that did not help my problem. It may be virus related but I dont thik so. Malewarebytes, superantispyware, and mccafee scans all say I'm clean. Any help or push in the right direction appreciated. I need some audio. What OS, add some other information.

Its a dell 4550 Windows xp 2002 home version service pack 3 pentium 4, 256ramobviously happy to provide any other info needed, please let me know. Just still looking for some help/advice/direction on this issue. Been like this over a week now. Have no idea how to FIX this. Would reinstalling xp do anything for this issue. Not sure how to fix it, but just wanted to comment by SAYING, if you do Re-install Windows, it will be fixed, but all your programs will be lost.

If you don't have many IMPORTANT things on your computer, you might just want to do that.

PS, get some more RAM and you will watch your computer speed up significantly.
On an old computer of mine I had 256, and made it a Gig completely, and lets just say I was very surprised with the results...

If not, search for something that checks/fixes your registry. Maybe the sound is related to your drivers? Maybe try to reinstall them? Just a thought, I am no expert, but hate to see a thread unanswered...Actually, try a program called CCleaner. Works great...I will try that. Also I ordered another 512 of ram today. If I wasent broke and laidoff I would have just gotton two and called it a day, maybe later.
I dont have my xp cd and do have alot of stuff but it may be an only option for me as I am not that hot on computers. I tried uninstalling the audio driver and never got a responce so not sure if it worked or not. Went to install new driver from the emu site and I was getting errors when trying to download. You can borrow an XP CD from anyone you know to facilitate repairs and you won't be violating any liscensing laws to do so...
The Version and installed Service Packs have to match however...i.e. if you are running XPPro w/SP2 that's the CD you need.

This is assuming you're legit to begin with.thanks for the info. Not my first option however. Would like to just fix the problem if thats possible,Finally able to locate both drivers on cd and problem fixed. Thanks for all replies.

Solve : IRQ Troubles?

Answer»

I'm having some horrible IRQ issues, and I need help.

I have options in the BIOS for IRQ settings, and there are IRQ settings in Device Manager as well so I'm not sure which settings to change.

The computer is a modified 6792-2HU. I added a video card, wireless card, CD-Burner, DVD-ROM, more RAM, and a 200 GB Hdd.

Pentium 4 (1.79 GHz / Socket 478 mPGA / 400 MHz FSB)
512 MB RAM (PC133)
Nvidia GeForce 4 Ti 4200 (AGP / 128 MB RAM)

The computer worked perfectly with the modifications for well over a YEAR, but yesterday I uninstalled the video drivers and rebooted. I was planning on upgrading to a GeForce 5500 FX card.

I couldn't get it to boot in safe mode or any other mode so I decided to just reinstall Windows since I had a beta version of SP3 installed. I was hoping Windows would reassign everything correctly, but it didn't work. I've spent the day trying to fix it.

I've tried:

- Unplugging hardware I don't absolutely need for Windows to install.
- Only using 1 STICK of RAM.
- Flashed the BIOS with the newest version (made in 1994).
- Set the BIOS to "legacy free" mode to free some IRQs.
- Switching the ACPI IRQ between 9, 10, and 11.
- Installing 3 different versions of Windows XP (SP0, SP2, & 2 version of SP3) multiple times.

I finally got XP with no Service Pack to install.

Right now, it will boot without freezing if I turn it on with my USB mouse unplugged. I'm also having trouble with the new video card. I installed the drivers from Nvidia, but Windows insists that the graphics be 4-bit color.

The new card is a 8x and the AGP slot is 4x. I don't know if that matters, but I hope not. There's also a setting in the BIOS about the video card. It has options for AGP or PCI and 64 MB RAM - 256 MB RAM."Flashing" the BIOS might not have been a good idea here...
Remove the CMOS battery and UNPLUG all power for ten minutes and replace the battery and re-boot.
This will set the BIOS to default settings but it WILL NOT correct an incorrect flash.

Solve : Getting the File Transfer option to work?

Answer»

Hi Guys,

I discovered that I had an illegal XP copy on my C drive, which has been cloned to my D drive.

I got an authentic verison of XP, hoping I could do a REPAIR and put in the authentic version. However it turned into an actual reinstall. So now it is in fresh on the C drive.

The D drive has my files and SETTINGS. But when using the XP Transfer option, it doesn't seem to work. I boot up with the D drive and select the options as on the old computer. I then boot up with C and attempt to ACCESS that drive through the File Transfer option, but it keeps saying that it cannot find whatever file it's looking for.

Any ideas or options?

Thanks.Try HereI can see the files on the D drive. One of my problems is that I don't know what file the Transfer program is looking for so how can I take ownership of it?I'm not the one to advise on this...FAST never worked very good for me and i pretty much abandoned it after a dozen or so messy attempts. You mean to say that the MS Transfer program doesn't work quite as well as advertised?I believe I have it going. I needed to INSTALL drivers like the previous poster. However it doesn't really do anything that I can detect.

However I think it still wants me to reinstall the programs. I'll do that and then run it again.

Thanks for your help.

Solve : Help cleaning everything off emachine!?

Answer»

SO, I got a computer, about one year old from my BIL, and its got windowsXP home edition, its an eMachine. But it has all kinds of crap on it I don't need. Like porn, downloads, movies, ALL kinds of stuff. How do I get it off?? It didn't come with any disks or anything. What OS do you plan to install on it without any CD's...are you considering Linux or other ? ?
To do it properly you will need a Windows CD of the FLAVOR of your choice...You get rid of stuff you don't want by, er, "deleting" it. You can delete porn, movies, that kind of thing quite safely without harming the system. Unwanted games can be uninstalled via the "Add-remove programs" section of Control Panel.

I must say your brother-in-law does not sound like a gentleman if he gave you a computer stuffed with porn. Have you thought of telling your sister?

Its my BIL the other way, My husbands brother All he said was you need to clean this off, very casual. I have deleted the easy to notice ones...but I'm scared I will delete/uninstall something important. Well, there's a LOT I COULD say... but i expect you already thought it yourself... I sympathise. You can safely delete any multimedia material such as video clips, movies, etc that you don't want, and probably most of the stuff that is not under C:\Program Files or C:\Documents and settings. Also empty the recycle bin.

Your husband cannot be a gentleman if he lets his brother insult his wife in that fashion, IMHO.

Use Windows Search for these things (choose advanced options and show hidden files.)

*.mpg
*.avi
*.wmv
*.jpg

and make a judgement on what you find. You may need a strong stomach.
Quote from: veggiemamma on September 29, 2007, 11:57:15 AM

... All he said was you need to clean this off, very casual. ...

Very casually ask him for any and all disks, CDs, documention, etc., that came with it when he got it.
If at all possible, having the CDs will be greatly to your ADVANTAGE - if not right now, then sometime in the future.

Since it is only a year old, the chances of them being lost are not as great as with an older machine.

Can't hurt to ask......

If not you will eventually need a Windows CD...this is inevitable

Solve : Perpetual Reboot after Windows screen after installing joystick.?

Answer»

Thermaltake Shark
DFI Lan party NF4 SLI-DR
AMD 64 X2 4800
OCZ 2g ram
(X2) 74G Raptor SATA RAID 0
EVGA GeForce 7800 GTX 256mb
Windows XP Pro (automatic updates / SPs)

I just bought the overpriced Saitek X52 Pro joystick, since I had to replace the older X52 which was a great stick. I put the installation CD in, plug in the sticks when instructed, and FINISH the installation instructions and procedures without a hitch. Everything showed on the control panel, but the rudder was acting funny (jerky and ill responsive on the LEFT side). I figure maybe I can just isolate it with an adjustment to its deadzone margin, or it may fix itself with a reboot or something. I go to reboot and my $3000 + computer rig is now caught in a perpetual rebooting cycle. The last stick had a maddening mouse pointer drift problem, and tech support was HORRIBLE. Looks like this time is going to be the same, as they have yet to get back with me. All while I wait without a computer.

I have tried booting in safe mode, last known good configuration, etc. and can not get my machine to boot. For a split second before it starts the cycle all over, it displays a blue screen with the following error message:

Stop error: This APPLICATION failed to start because msvcrt.dll was not found. Re-installing this application may fix this problem. After displaying this error message for about a half a second, it tries to re-boot.

I have tried the XP disk for the Repair CONSOLE, but no real luck. I'm very limited in my computer skills, but I have tried the following:

A dir command returns "an error occurred during directory enumeration".

A chkdsk command returns "The volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems.

Trying to copy the msvcrt.dll file from a floppy to C returns "cannot copy file"

If I choose the SETUP option from the CD, it says:
The following list shows the existing partitions and unpartitioned space on this computer:

70905 MB Disk 0 at ID 0 on bus 0 on atapi [ MBR ]
C:Partition 1 [Unknown] 141816 MB (141815 MB Free)

70905 MB Disk 0 at ID 0 on bus 0 on atapi [ MBR ]
Unpartitioned space 70904 MB

The system has been running in top shape with McAffee for virus protection, regular defrags and scandisks etc., and did this out of the blue the restart after the joystick was installed.

Thanks so much in advance for any efforts to help / diagnose.

(A chkdsk command returns "The volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems.)

Try go to run-cmd-chkdsk /r
enter

have you try system restore?
Did you un-install the old driver before installing the new driver?
search for the latest driver, and update you pc anti virus / spyware.
uninstall mcaffee,
try avira anti virus

update & full SCAN,

download ccleaner

Solve : Hal.dll is missing?

Answer»

hi everyone, Just one to check to make sure I'm on the right track!

A friend of mine has XP home. his PC will not boot up it says "Hal.dll is missing"

I went into the SYSTEM RECOVERY and type: expand D:\i386\hal.dl_ C:\windows\system32

it said, "There is no floppy DISK or cd in the drive"

so I took the harddrive out and put it in my PC and check for a virus... yes there where over 200... if not more.

Most of them are gone.... I also grab a copy of my hal.dll and paste it on his drive where his old one was.

Put his drive back to his PC and the same thing happen. "There is no floppy disk or cd in the drive"

I did the fixboot and chkdsk /p/r... still nothing.

The CD ROM is FINE and there's nothing wrong with it... I'm thinking maybe the virus got so bad it may have corrupted other major system FILES and needs to be reinstall or the HD is either bad or going bad. I didn't see chkdsk indicate anything that the HD is going bad.

being that I saw the HD and back up his documents and settings.... it Just might be going bad... hard to say yet but, that would be my last option... I check his boot.ini and it's fine.

I was thinking putting my xp CD and doing a repair or better yet a reinstall, considering there maybe other virus in his HD but the only thing is my CD is Fake but works... "got scam by a company" .
wayyyy back ago before I even got into IT.
I don't think that would be a good option there!

any option would be great and thanks spider

Solve : Simple ? and oh yeah I am computer illiterate. lol?

Answer»

Can a person connect to their dial up connection if they have fast internet SERVICE on their computer as their main Internet service? If so, how? I want to USE a different isp when I am using my fast internet sometimes. I have a dial service provider on my computer. Do I have to hook my phone line back up if I want to use my dial up? I am slow so forgive me. lol Thanks in advance to whoever answers. Kat Unless your Internet Service Provider offers dial-up as well as the broadband connection you'd first need to have a dial-up service for this to work.

However, yes. You could do this, although unless you're leaving your computer with broadband I'm not exactly sure why you'd want to do this.well when I was using my dial up before I WENT to fast service I have 2 blasting submitter SOFTWARE that worked fine with the dial up, but with the fast service the submitters are submitting so fast until its not submitting my ads at all. Until I find out why I cant use the submitters with my fast service I will keep using the dial up. its a free dial up service so no out of pocket $$$. I was using the dial up just for that purpose. The submitters work fine with the dial up but I hate going through the hassle of keep switching from dial up to my fast service.

Thanks anyway KatI don't understand that a connection could be too fast for transmitting DATA...
I think we are going to need more details on what you are trying to accomplish and with what software.

Hope this helps. That .dll is not LISTED in any database i checked...is it spelled correctly ? ?
Take the advice above and let us KNOW.It looks very much like a Vundo filename...

1. Download VundoFix and save it to your desktop.
2. Run VundoFix and click on Scan For Vundo.
3. Once it's done scanning, click on Remove Vundo.
4. When it prompts you to remove the files, click on Yes.
5. Your desktop will go blank as it's removing files. Don't worry, this is normal.
6. It will prompt you to restart your computer, so click OK.
7. When your computer is turned back on, your problem should be gone.
8. The program normally produces a Vundofix.txt file. Please locate this file and paste the contents in your next post.

And then, just to be thorough...
1. Download VirtumundoBeGone and save it to your desktop.
2. Reboot into Safe Mode.
3. Once you are in Safe Mode, run VirtumundoBeGone and follow the instructions.
4. Exit when it has finished and reboot back into normal mode.
5. The program normally produces a VBG.txt file. Please locate this file and paste the contents in your next post.

After following these steps and the above advice, you may want to post a HijackThis log as well.Hey,
Thanks for the advice, it really seems to have worked. You guys do a really good job here. Can I ask you about on emore thing or should I post a new topic. I still have a Chinese version of Kaspersky running in the background. it is an original copy but it seemed to crash when I installed it or something. It doesn't want to respond to anything and I also have AVG's free antivirus software. I know I shouldnt have two antivirus but when I go to add/remove programs Kaspersky isnt there.
Is there a program I can download to nuke it?

Solve : please, I will push a quarter with my nose, to whoever can help me?

Answer»

Keep in mind 2 years ago the difference in a 'drive' and 'a driver' to me was a drive, I could take and a driver took Miss Daisy. I am going to try and make this as short as I can. 2 yrs ago my computer crashed, I had to reformat the hard drive. Took a little time but I got it all figured out. Well except for my computer hasnt spoken a word sence. Before all this, they sounded great. oh and for at least 2 hrs each WK for 2 years (2)(two) I have battled, I am so sick of unknown devices, and missing drivers! OK NOW, the little chip sais REALTEK RTL8201BL inside my computer. the words nForce, elitegroup , Nvidia corp. Heres the deal Im so still lost, and tired of doing this and that, thinking that it was going to,but no.
I wish I could attach all 2 yrs of the notes and printed help pages from everywhere to explain it better(if you think u can help me see my profile)So basically you want to update every thing on your computer I can prepare a sort list if this is the case, if not then sorry I did not UNDERSTAND the above...

Edit: (Its has been brought to my attention that the above may be viewed as rude please understand it is not intended this way)Seems you need to update your sound and video drivers. First thing you should do is HEAD to the websites of those manufacturers and download the most recent drivers for your product.Download latest Service pack....
Download latest graphics card drivers....
Download latest Drivers for (sound, montior ETC)...

I do not think there is any quick fix to this problem... I agree with the previous replies!!

Thought I would add that I find this site www.driverguide.com very helpful in searches for drivers!! They also have tutorials to help you find your drivers!!
Hope this helps you!!

Solve : Error while trying to reformat & recover windows ME?

Answer»

I have been trying to run the HP system recovery disks to reformat & recover a computer for my cousin. Each time I attempt this, it stalls out while INFLATING files in windows/options/sbsi/....~.wav and I receive an error message stating abort, retry, or fail...I have worked with HP customer care on this ISSUE and am back at square one...anyone have any suggestions? Please and Thanks "Abort retry or fail?" is the message that comes up when the system has detected that it could not read data from a DISK. Are these floppy disks? Whatever, the message means "damaged disk". When you say that you have worked with HP customer care on this, what did you mean exactly? I would imagine that a system that came with Windows ME must be at least 5 or 6 YEARS OLD, if not more, and I would not be surprised if HP are not interested. If the machine in question is not the one that the disks came with, I would be even less surprised.

Your cousin will need to examine his or her options. These may include purchasing a Windows ME install CD on Ebay (or getting one in some other way that we cannot discuss here.)

Solve : Black screen after windows XP loading screen?

Answer»

Like the title says, its been black for ages now. Any ideas what this could be? Ive googled and got different answers from video drivers to corrupted boot files. Also my chipset fan doesn't work - I don't think it would be related. I've been getting than Chkdsk MESSAGE after startup for a few days too. Any ideas?

Just got a blue screen: TOP:c0000218 Unknown Hard Error
Unknown Hard Error

Guess it is taking about the hardrive.

Thanks for any help

EDIT: Im currently running chkdsk through the recovery console. Okay after chddsk it has booted. What should I do now? Will it be okay? I would replace the chipset fan immediately...trust me it's related. It has been like that for months. Ill try and replace it this week - it is hard, is it simply just taking the old ONE off and sticking a new one in?.Quote from: notme on September 30, 2007, 06:45:26 AM

It has been like that for months. Ill try and replace it this week - it is hard, is it simply just taking the old one off and sticking a new one in?.
It can be if you dont know what your doing.....

1.) Remove ALL the connections from the motherboard and try and remember where everything is. (If you can tell me your motherboard, I may be able to send you a PDF which shows you where the connections go)
2.)Remove the 6/9 screws that hold your motherboard to the chassis.
3.)Flip it around. There you should see two pins holding the chipset fan into place. You will need to GENTLY use some plyers and press the pin together to release them. Do it to both pins and it should slowly pop out.
4.)Get the new one, remove the sticker from the thermal pad and pop it into place.
5.)Screw the board back to the chassis and put the connectors back in its place. Before you follow the above instructions post the MBoard model # and the CPU you have in there...many BOARDS do not neccessarily need to be removed from the case to replace a heatsink fan...ASUS A8N-SLI *S939 - Motherboard
AMD XP3700 64 BIT - CPU

Thanks for all the help so far, I'm really bad with hardware, really appreciate it.This is the meaning of your bugcheck code.

0xC0000218: UNKNOWN_HARD_ERROR

A necessary Registry hive file couldn’t be loaded. The file may be corrupt or missing (requiring either an Emergency Repair Disk or a Windows reinstallation). The Registry files may have been corrupted because of hard disk CORRUPTION or some other hardware problem. A driver may have corrupted the Registry data while loading into memory, or the memory where the Registry is loading may have a parity error (turn off the external cache and check the physical RAM).

First test your ram using the Memtest86+ programme from HERE (http://www.memtest.org/)

This is another option Guys! spider
Thanks Spider if I can find a disk I will try that.
EDIT:Ran the memtest for 5 passes and no errors.I would still be far more concerned with a CPU fan failing than i would any registry errors...
Visit the ASUS site and DLoad and read the instructions for replacing that fan...
But if the registry is a priority then go for it.Its just freezing on the windows xp screen now. Works in safemode but slow. Im getting the chipfan replaced tormorrow. Do you think it will work after I get it replaced?

EDIT: Im just gonna take it into my local computer shop. Is the anyway I can boot into linux to backup my files? Safemode is now borked. I ran chkdsk and it booted then I got a message saying cant validate license key?!?!?!?! Notme, do what patio said, what I told you was Just another option!

considering where not in front of your computer.
spiderI think it is not just the chipfan which is broken. I was wondering if the is a way to backup my files? Through linux?

Solve : Win ME and PC Dos 7.0?

Answer»

My main USE for this LAPTOP is playing my old dos and windows games. Will I be able to install PC Dos 7.0 retail on this laptop so I can play dos games?

Laptop:

Dell Lat. C840

Nvidia 440 go
Win MEAnother Alternative

Most versions of DOS NEED to be installed before Windows so unless you want to wipe the drive and proceed this may be better...
I can't say for sure though that this is true for PCDOS...Win ME is STILL DOS based operating system, and most DOS game should play there without a problem.

Solve : Error reinstalling windows xp?

Answer»

I have a dell with Windows XP and the system restore cd. I loaded the CD and clicked reinstal Windows it prepared for installation then restarted the computer to START installing but when it reboots i get an error message saying that it can not find the cd rom drive. so then i restart it and go to Windows rather then SETUP. My drive works fine in windows so I don't understand why it does not work when rebooting. Exactly what do you MEAN by "loaded the CD"? Did you boot from the CD or open it after a normal startup?

I believe you need to boot from the CD. To do that, access your BIOS and set CD-ROM as the initial boot device. Is your drive an external USB?If your CD-ROM is external then boot it to CD-ROM external USB. Check it if your mobo supports booting to USB CD-ROM.It would help us if you could supply the model number of your dell computer or the Service Tag so we can get an idea of what your particular computer has...as far as hardware goes.

Also...you really don't want to blindly insert the recovery CD into your CD drive and click "Reinstall Windows", since this will COPY Windows over your current installation...and may leave some damaged files behind...not fixing the problem.

If you're going to reinstall your operating system becuase you want a fresh start...it's best to reformat the hard drive and boot from the recovery CD in order to clean everything up and start anew.

Please note: Formatting your hard drive will erase everything on that drive...so you may want to backup any important files, PROGRAMS, documents and folders prior to doing what I jyst recommended.

Solve : Harddrive crash? need help!?

Answer»

Ok today i turned on my comp and came to the start in safe mode and all that good writing.. well anyhoo it started to read a D drive and said something about FAT32 and after it read to 100% the comp just restarted itself. It keeps on doing this whenever it does that. It will not load to Windows XP, just restarts =(. Any help anyone? im kinda noobish when it comes to comps and etc.1st of all,why you start in safe mode?never mind
OK, is that hdd being partition into C & D?
Right CLICK the D drive, properties - tools - Disk Check - tick the 2 available option - ok.
Perhaps you should do the same with the C drive.I got a C and D drive, thing is i cant get into my Desktop. When i try to get into safe mode i see alot of writing scroll down my black screen and then it just reboots all over again =/http://www.sohologics.com/fileadmin/newsletter/news0201/safe-mode04.jpg

like that?and then shutdown?YEA! THATS the screen then it shuts down and starts back up again with options to choose with safe mode and others. I got no idea whats going on with this comp ugh! makes me sad =/do you have any add on card?sound card?graphic card?any add on...
take it out and see what happen, it could be your Os too,but we go for it one by one
&, you have two hdd? take out the D, leave the Master
Nopers i dont. Just got 1 HD that is partitioned in C and D im guessing. i hate compsit could be overheat, but if the computer restart every TIME with that perfect TIMING & same location (safe mode) it would be other problem
Do you have extra hdd that you can try in that pc?
or reformat the hdd.
But wait for the other pro's here, they could give you any idea.Nope sure dont have extra HDs lyin around, wish i did =/. It restarts regardless of Safe mode, every route i try to go with the options they give me results in a restart of the comp. Wont even let me touch the desktop *SIGH* i just wanna throw my comp out lol. Well a Format is the last thing i am looking for, just trying to salvage some stuff on the HD if i can then format.well, hook it up in another pc as a slave, but it could result shutdown again, who knows

Then you can transfer the data exist in the hdd.
Good Luck anyway if you can't wait for other support here Bump!

I think you are getting a Blue Screen (bsod) error but cannot see the error code due to your having your system set to automatic restart on error.

Please post some info on your hardware setup e.g. do you have a floppy drive?

Download and run Memtest86 from memtest86.com and the manufacturer's diagnostics for your hard drive from the manufacturer's site.

Good luck

Welp i got alot of bad sectors in the harddrive, so it did end up in a Crash of the HD

What are my options in trying to get any info back, also couldnt i just format the whole HD and have it back to normal somehow? the store guy said he'll have to get a new HD and transfer all the old data from the old one to the new hd so its gonna cost me a arm and a leg by that being $210 with Labor being more then the HD ugh.Quote from: Mirekbenz83 on October 02, 2007, 11:15:53 AM

Your options are to have a repair guy do that by installing a new HDD and then transferring all your files to the new HDD or you do it yourself but you will still need a new HDD which is not that expensive. I hope you still have XP discs.Hook up that HDD jumpered as a slave into a known working machine that has a burner in it...
Transfer what you need to the working HDD and then burn it to CD/DVD...don't try a direct burn.

Solve : desktop won't load using limited access account?

Answer»

I am in a votech class for computer repair and we were running cisco virtual desktop program. The program didn't WORK right because of the 128mb RAM in the computers so my teacher installed 1 gig of ram in all twelve computers. Some of the computers weren't happy with the new ram and some won't load the desktop on a limited access account but loads it fine on the administrator account. I don't know what the problem is and would appreciate some help. You could TRY setting up a new limited access account...if the desktop WORKS fine then just transfer the account onfo to the new account and delete the corrupted ONE...

Solve : Completely lost!!?

Answer»

My computer was working fine yesterday, and then this morning I got on it and I couldnt sign into MSN, I can't log into Hotmail, or Gmail, or Facebook...It lets me get to the login screen, and then once I put in my information it brings up a "Cannot Find Server" page.

With MSN, when I type in my information the letters come up VERY slowly, and when I FINALLY get all my information in, and I click sign in, it brings up an error instantly which reads, "Signing into Windows Live Messenger failed because service is temporarily Unavailiable. Please try again later. Error Code:8004888d"

Now obviously you would tell me to try again later, and I have.

I ran a virus scan and came up empty. Aswell as a Adware scan, and nothing. All other web pages WORK. But when it comes to logging into something it doesn't.

Solve : Memory Crash XP Media Centre Edition?

Answer»

For the past number of months I've experienced intermittent crashes of my computer. The computer would shut down completely and restart. The computer programs hang for about 1 second then the power switches off and the compter reboots. There is no warning or shut down of processes. This can happen a few times a day or not at all for over a week. This MAY appear when I am actively using the computer or after the computer has been idle for a few hours.

When I allow Windows to send a report to itself, the message on their page states that the PROBLEM is with random access memory.

I've tried the Windows memory analysis tool but nothing is ever found.

My system is set up like this:
Operating System: XP Media Center Edition SP2
RAM installed: 2 GB (I added a new 1 GB DIMM a few months before the problem started)
Proscessors: Dual Pentium 4 - 3.4 GHz
Security: McAfee Security Center (The problem existed before this install)

I've kept the computer up to date with Windows Update and have used various security programs for spyware and viruses. (Microsoft, TrendMicro, LAVASOFT and McAfee)

The computer was purchased in October 2006.Sounds like the new RAM is not compatible with either the other stick or the machine itself.
Travel to Crucial.com and run a scan of your machine and it will tell you what type of RAM it takes.....all RAM is not the same. Both DIMMs are identical. Synchronous, 1024 MB, 533 MHz, 64 bit total and DATA width. Different manufacturers though.

The new DIMM worked well for more than 2 months before this problem arose.

I'm thinking that the problem is actually caused by some software conflict.
I have seen instances when different manuf. sticks would not play together.
You may want to DLoad and run MemTest and let it run a few hours.I ran the Microsoft Memory test CD and ran it for a number of hours with no problems.

The crashing had escalated to every 10 or 15 minutes.

I REMOVED the extra DIMM and the problem has not recurred.

Thanks for the help.Try Memtest86 instead, it is more comprehensive than the MS memory test disc.

Solve : Monitor problems caused by commercial dehumidifiers??

Answer»

Good morning~
I have a Sony Vaio flat screen monitor and I run Windows XP. We had a hot water leak under our kitchen floor, and last week Disaster Restoration came in and put five commercial dehumidifiers in our house. Two of then are huge, and are about 20 feet AWAY from my computer. Three of them are smaller, but one sits directly behind me. These have been RUNNING 24/7 for over a week now. Last night, the color on my monitor went wonky~everything is sort of purple. No matter what, I couldn't seem to fix it or find the reason for it. This morning, after having been in standby mode overnight, the colors were fine for half an hour. Now it's all purple again.

So, that was a very long winded way of asking: do these dehumidifiers have anything to do with my monitor problems? I'm an eBay seller and NEED to use my computer for everything, but cannot edit photos with the color out of whack.

Many thanks in advance!Do you have an UPS or good quality surge suppresser with EMI/RFI suppression?I'm an Internet whiz, but dense when it comes to computers. I do have a surge suppressor, but I'm not sure what EMI/RFI is. If that were the problem, wouldn't I have noticed this before?
I am so FRUSTRATED right now. If it's the dehumidifier, then I'll want to turn it off, but I don't want to do that if it's not!EMI = electro-magnetic interference
RFI = radio frequency interference

You can check to see if those motors (especially if on the same circuit as the computer) are causing a problem by turning them all off and see if the problem PERSISTS. When turning them back on, do it one at a time and wait a sufficient amount of time in between to see if the problem returns.Quote from: adrianayb on October 02, 2007, 08:39:50 AM

... but one sits directly behind me. ...

Just curious - how close is the closest dehumidifier to the monitor?

Also, do you expect to be required to keep them running much longer?

If you have or can borrow a spare monitor...try that first...then see how it goes.

I had this happen to my daughter's computer and ended up replacing the monitor. This happened to my son's computer and i wound up replacing the de-humidifier...

Sorry. Couldn't resist.

I'm laughing so hard right now...I almost had an accident...

try popping out the cmos battery that might work and won't erase any important memory, just time and date and stuff.

This will not help since the USERNAME and password is Windows-based...referring to the CMOS battery method.

Since the OP forgot his username, as well, the link you provided will not help...unless he remembers his username.

patio's recommendation seems to be the ticket...

Solve : I've lost everything on my desktop - Windows XP?

Answer»

When I turn on my PC all I get is a blank DESKTOP - no menu bar, no tool bar, no start up menu - absolutely nothing but a lovely sky blue screen and a white mouse. Nothing happens when I right click either so it's not my desktop settings.
My Hp pavillion is running windows XP SP 2 and after running MS Malicious software diags via Task Manager. It found and cleaned one trojan and ConHook virus. I've run Reg Cure and Registry Mechanic and nothing fixes the blank screen. Also ran Norton AV

Has anyone seen this before? Any suggestions how to fix?Start>Run, type in:
sfc /scannow
Click OK.
Have XP CD handy. There is no START to go to Run. The main desktop has absolutely nothing on it.
I'll SEE if I can find a DOS prompt from Task Manager.

I'm running everything via Task Manager currently, even my IE 7.I'm sorry, I got lost.
Go to New Task in Task Manager, type in:
cmd
Click OK.

Command Prompt window will open. Type in:
sfc /scannow
Hit Enter. That's done. Now what?Did "sfc" find any errors?nothing reported from sfc. It took a while but just came BACK to the DOS promptI have noticed that there is no explorer.exe running in the Task Manager processes BOX. I do I restore that? You may try Repair Install: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm#RIThanks I'll try it and LET you know what happens. OK.

Solve : Can't read PDF?

Answer»

I can't read a PDF in Microsoft. When I try to get to PDF it says it must be converted. I have Windows XP. Very frustrating. I presume you don't have a PDF READER installed?

You can download either

Adobe PDF reader

http://www.adobe.com/products/reader/

or

Foxit PDF reader (FASTER and smaller)

http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php

There are a whole bunch of others, which you can find by doing a Google search for "free PDF reader".

If you already have done this, maybe the reader software got damaged and needs reinstalling.

Thank you so very much. I have been trying to fix this for a long time and I just STUMBLED upon COMPUTER hope by accident. I installed Foxit PDF reader and sure ENOUGH it worked. I was getting ready to drag the computer behind my truck for a few hours. Thank you.As for the future reference, avoid Adobe PDF reader.

I have many data drives for storing recorded TV. When a data drive gets close to being full, I get the warning Low Disk Space. How can I turn this off for my data drives as it's ANNOYING? My recording program RECOGNIZES when a drive is low and will switch to a different drive. I'm using Win XP Pro.http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/article03-102Thanks. I went there LAST night and they had a problem with the server or something.Did you get the answer?

Windows XP

Run the Registry Editor (REGEDIT.EXE).
Open HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ Software\ Microsoft\ Windows\ CurrentVersion\ Policies\ Explorer.
If it's not there, create a DWORD value and call it NoLowDiskSpaceChecks.
Double-click on NoLowDiskSpaceChecks, and enter the value 1, and press OK.

Just in case....
Thanks, Spoiler.That fixed it.

I went there again last night and today and when I typed in "Low Disk Space", I get a "you've encountered and INTERNAL ERROR."

1. Tutorial (with some nice reference links). Ran across an easy read tutorial you might be interested in: Understanding, Identifying and Upgrading the RAM in your PC

2. Same Issues OCCURRED.
Quote from: rthoman on April 03, 2008, 11:24:00 AM

It is just interesting that the same issues occurred when I put the old ram back in.

If there's a weakness in the memory subsystem, then any data read in from disk that's corrupted by this weakness will spread that corruption back to the disk when written out to the file system (or files within).

Except for your statement that the trouble started when you swapped memory, a failing disk subsystem could also cause problems for your system.

Start by verifying the memory runs reliably in your system.Ok. I ran the MEMTEST program and it came back with no errors. I am guessing that proves the RAM is ok, but does it also prove the memory is correct for the machine??

I did boot and go to repair. That is how I copied the ntldr, ntdetect and hal.dll. I did chkdsk /r as well.

Were there any interesting messages from the "chkdsk"? Any errors found and/or repaired?

3. Boot.ini. You could use the "Recovery Console" to look at your "boot.ini" file just to ensure it looks correct and is pointing to correct partition. Dell utilities on partition 1, Windows operating system on partition 2?

4. Dell Diagnostics. You could boot into the Dell diagnostics and run them just on general principles.

5. Windows Advanced Options Menu. Did you try boot with Last KNOWN Good CONFIGURATION from the Windows Advanced Options Menu?

Solve : Upgrade to XP?

Answer»

Did you actually:
- UNINSTALL old driver
- uninstall modem
- restart computer
- let Windows find the modem
- install new driver?I knew you would ask that sooner or later. Yes, I've done all those things numerous times.Go back to DEVICE Manager, right click on your modem, click Properties, then Driver tab, then Driver details button, and post back here what is listed there.
There are three possibilities:
- downloaded driver is not up to date
- XP protects its own driver, preventing new driver from installation
- your modem went deadInternal or external ? ?Sorry for the delay. I had to get a night's sleep. I did what you said and at the top of the Driver File Details window it SAYS:

Motorola SM Speakerphone Modem
Under that is a window with a list of 13 different driver files, most of which have a language suffix. Under that window is the following:
Provider: Unknown
File version: Unknown
Copyright: Unknown
Digital Signer: Microsoft Windows Hardware Compatibility

That's all there is.It looks like your driver wasn't installed. How exactly did you go about installing it?I believe you are correct. Before I saw your last reply, I was fooling around with the hardware list and all of a sudden (I'm not sure what I did) a window CAME up that said Windows is installing a driver. When I clicked "finish" and rebooted, everything seemed to be working. I clicked on NetZero and I'm now online. I'm typing this on my own computer. THANK YOU for all of your help. It's too bad that neither Windows nor Microsoft tech support could guide me through this.Quote

Solve : How to set password to certain files?

Answer»

Hey guys, how can I set p/w in certain files, like a .doc or .fla or other files i need to keep protected. i don't WANT to compress it in anyway.

So for example, if someone OPENS the file they can't open it or delete it WITHOUT a password because i have every important documents that i need to keep safe.

thanks

Microsoft XP <--- OSCouldn't find ANYTHING on using passwords without compressing the file. You can make folders within your user profile private, by right clicking the folder==>Properties==>Sharing TAB==>Click the Make this folder private box.

Also consider using a portable device: a flash drive, CD or even a floppy will keep your files private.

Google will probably show many 3rd party products that can lockup your files. Just a side note: we've had many posters come here trying to unlock their files because of lost or forgotten passwords.

thanks

Solve : HELP!! UNABLE TO OPEN OUTLOOK?

Answer»

My Microsoft Outlook FILE (not Outlook Express) was set up to send/receive messages through one of my ISP’s. I made some minor changes to my Tasks folder on 3/10/08. I then went to Disc Cleanup and compressed my files. PRIOR to this day I had never checked “Compress Old Files“ for cleanup. I then shut down the computer. When I restarted, I was unable to ACCESS Microsoft Outlook at all.

If I right clicked on Outlook Icon on the toolbar a box would open asking me to create a new profile with a new profile name. When I hit “cancel” I received this Error Message “No profiles have been created. To create new profile, use the Mail Icon in the Control Panel. When I pressed OK I received ANOTHER Error Message saying “Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. The server is not available. Contact your ADMINISTRATOR if this condition persists.” When I went to the Control Panel and pressed the Mail Icon, there was a box that said “These are the profiles that are set up on this computer.” Inside the box is “empty” showing no profiles at all.

I then did a search and located my Outlook file. I attempted to open it to no avail. It had 44,256KB - Office Data File - and it shows it was last modified 3/10/08 at 7:47 pm.

When I attempt to open it I receive this Error Message: Cannot start Microsoft Outlook the command line argument is not valid. Verify the switch you are using.

On 3/12/08 I ran Outlook in Safe Mode. I was able to create another file, Outlook 1, which I can use in the future. Of course, I still have the problem of opening my original Outlook file with years of data in it.

I hope someone on this site can help me. I need to open my original Outook file. This is my first posting.
The file you were able to find on your system...what is the extension of it? Does it end in .pst? Or something else?

Solve : Forgot password on a Toshiba Laptop?

Answer»

I just got a laptop & when I turn it on...I get PROMPTED to enter a password & I was wondering if I can BYPASS that or not...If I can, how?

It's a Toshiba Laptop & it has Windows XP Home Edition. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank You!!!You can't bypass it. Just how did you get this laptop?
THANKS for replying to my post. Well actually the laptop is my sister's & she thinks her ex-boyfriend put a password on it & she wanted me to help her which I have no clue so I told her I would go online & try to get help but if I can't then I don't know what she is going to do. When you first open up the laptop...a blue window pops up SAYING Enter Password & she has no idea how her ex put one on there or how to get it off......so no idea. If she wants to open up her wallet and spend some cabbage a Toshiba Certified Repair facility will do this for her ....she will need to show proof of ownership.Makes a change from "the kids did it".

Solve : Windows XP setup floppies?

Answer»

Does anyone have these still? Circumstances have conspired against me and I need them, I had them at one time but now can not find the disks. I followed the LINKS on the Microsoft support pages, but they are misleading. The page says XP setup disks, but when downloaded it only creates the 4 W2K disks. If you have someplace that has them for downloading please let me know. Or maybe just send them to me at attached folders?

Whatever is easier.

Thankshttp://www.bootdisk.com/

This should be of some help to you.Bootdisks for the Pro and Home versions respectively.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994

Just download the set that matches your version and service pack.
Deerpark, the link you provided is exactly the one that I followed and it only gave me the setup disks for windows 2000. Even though it says windows xp, once the program is downloaded it will create only the windows 200 disks. It even says Windows 2000 once it starts.

Guardian, I have looked at bootdisk.com and unfortunately the link on that site dealing with the 6 XP startup disks leads right to the page that Deerpark provided, and which I found. The same one that is mislabeled as having xp disks but only creates Win2k.

Thanks for the responses, does anyone have the actual disks or know of a site that is not on bootdisk or the windows support pages that has them for download?

I have just tested the set for XP Pro SP2 in VMware and they work as expected.
And I got 6 disks.I know I am not NUTS, this is the what I downloaded from Microsoft:

WindowsXP-KB310994-SP2-Pro-BootDisk-ENU

and when opened I got Windows 2000 and 4 disks.

What did you download, what did you do differently?

Could the program depend on the version of windows currently RUNNING on the computer it is opened on?

[recovering space - attachment deleted by admin]That is strange indeed.
I downloaded WindowsXP-KB310994-SP2-Pro-BootDisk-ENU.exe as well (size 4,39 MB).
And I get this:

I've uploaded the file I downloaded to File Dropper.
http://www.filedropper.com/windowsxp-kb310994-sp2-pro-bootdisk-enu

The file is to the best of my knowledge malware free, but as always download at your own risk.THANK YOU! Don't know why yours was different from mine, but I downloaded it, ran it, ignored the error message that came up and am now making the 6 disks.

That is just too strange.
I didn't do ANYTHING out of the ordinary to get the file. Just clicked the link and hit download.

But great to hear my download worked for you.I think that the program scans what version you have loaded on your machine and provides the floppies for that. I downloaded your file to a Windows 2000 machine and when started it looked like it would create the 6 floppies (cd1, cd2 etc.) but when done I got the Windows 2000 creation window from before.

When I downloaded to an XP machine it all worked and I got 6 disks.

Go FIGURE.
