Solve : 4 cores only 1 active?

Answer»

Hi all, I have a Q8200 quad CORE processor which runs to my liking, however, i have a PROBLEM. I'm running an application that MAKES my computer scream for mercy, it brings my frame rate below 5, which is heavily frustrating. I looked at the performance tab and the percentage is at 25%(3 of the boxes have their lines at the bottom, the 4th box has it at the top) always, never lower, never higher, and i was wondering if theres a way to make it so the application utilizes all four cores at once instead of murdering just ONE core.

*the application is FRAPS

Thanks!

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c251/WheatCrackers/coreisolation1-1.jpg - A picture of my performance tab.The application was likely designed for single core execution... I havent seen any utilities etc to span processes across multiple cores, which were designed for single core execution like you are looking for. If someone here has seen a utility to do this spanning for load balancing, I too am interested as for I have a dual core that floods the first core and it would be NEAT to balance the load for better performance.

Solve : MISSING PICTURES IN MY PICTURES FOLDER!!?

Answer»

Please help. All of my pictures in my MY PICTURES folder are gone. I downloaded RECUVA and nothing seems to have been DELETED. My only confusion is that my disk SPACE has not changed at all. I have many pictures on my PC and they do take up alot of space, so if they were deleted I assume that my disk space would have decreased. What else can I do? I've done system restores, I've searched for the folders CONTAINING the photos, I've searched for the file extensions, but nothing is COMING up. What happened prior to this ? ?Nothing out of the ordinary that I can remember. No virus or malware issues....I went into the folder and all that appeared was a set of Sample Pictures that are standard pictures on my pc.

Solve : Removing context menus?

Answer»

i SEEM to have collected an inordinate amount of context menu items which i donit use and are just annoying
how can i edit these. i understand it requires modifying multiple reg ENTRIES. is there an easier way?

thankswell i found an internet solution which was to go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers
which worked but there are some registry entries which are not the name of the progrm abut letters and numbers
how do i FIND out what they are?
Ccleaner's Registry Cleaner works fine with removing broken context menu options.Context Menu Editor

Powerful...be careful.thanks Patio, problem solved
cheers!Quote

That's why, I like ShellExView: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html better.
In program itself, you can only disable (not delete) context menu entry.
If you sure, you WANT to remove that particular entry, one click will open regedit with related registry entry.I like tools with Gusto...but i don't always recommend them for the REGULAR user...

Solve : Covert Verticle Text to Horizontal Text?

Answer»
I am working on a batch file that scan server folder sizes and then creates data files for each folder that was scaned. Unfortunately I've GOTTEN hung up on how to convert data listed vertically to a text file with horizontal data.

DataFile.Txt (Existing file Content)
ABCD
1234
A2C4
1B3D

ConvertedDataFile.Txt (New file content with space delimiter)
ABCD 1234 A2C4 1B3D

As an Overview:
Attached is the .Bat the starts with a DU (System Internals) command. The commands port folder information information into a text file. The files are then washed until I have nothing but the 4 lines of vertical data per file. The main remaining task is to get the data horizontal, port horizontal data to a single file, and then import into a database.

[attachment deleted by admin]Do you have Microsoft Office? You got this all wrong. You just lay the monitor on its side.! sibleytr - Welcome to the CH forums.

Try the following code to convert your crlf delimited text to space delimited text. No line-wrap not even a crlf at END of file. The final character in the output file is a space.

Code: [Select]@echo off
cls

for /f "tokens=*" %%a in (input_path\filename.ext) do (

<NUL (set/p z=%%a) >> output_path\filename.ext

)

Good luck & please post back with your results.
Here is my alternative:

@echo off
setlocal enabledelayedexpansion
set output=
for /f "delims==" %%L in (DataFile.Txt) do set output=!output! %%L
echo %output%>ConvertedDataFile.Txt
Code: [Select]'vert2horz.vbs
Dim Inputfile,Outputfile
dim spaced
if wscript.arguments.count < 2 then
showhelp

else
inputfile = wscript.arguments(0)
outputfile = wscript.arguments(1)
wscript.echo "Input file:" & inputfile
wscript.echo "output file:" & outputfile
'get Filesystemobject..
set FSO = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
'retrieve file object, and open it as an input stream.
set ReadIt = FSO.GetFile(inputfile).OpenAsTextStream(1)
'read text from input stream...
Alltext = Readit.ReadAll()
'no explanation necessary.
Readit.close()
'create the output file...
set outstream = FSO.CreateTextFile(outputfile,TRUE)
'process the input string. replace crlf with spaces.
spaced = replace(alltext,chr(13) & chr(10)," ")
'write to the output.
outstream.write spaced
outstream.close
'all done!
end if
Sub ShowHelp()
Wscript.echo "Vert2Horz VBScript program."
Wscript.echo "Usage: [CScript] Vert2Horz <inputfile> <outputfile>"
Wscript.echo "Warning: if the output file already exists, it will be overwritten!"
end sub

hmm, it's a bit longer then the batch file solution... and who needs error handling, anyway?Thank you Dusty and Dias - Both will do what I need...

BC great example, maybe some day I will upgrade to wscript

Solve : Having problems with Disk Defragmenter...ugh!?

Answer»

Ive gone around to a lot of different forums ACROSS the web, but every time I try to analyze of defragment something in disk defragmenter.....a WINDOW POPS up saying "Disk Defragmenter could not start."

HOW CAN I FIX IT =*( ?
Have you cleaned up your disk before attempting defrag? (Disk Cleanup, CCleaner). Have you tried defrag in Safe Mode? Have you tried running defrag from the command line? How much free space do you have on the partition being defragged? (defrag likes 15% or more).

How long is it since you defragged?Run services.msc from the WINDOWS Run box and ensure that the following are set correctly:

Logical disk manager - manual or automatic
Logical disk manager administrative service - manual or automatic
DCOM Server Process Launcher - automatic

Hope this helps. Quote from: Dusty on December 28, 2008, 12:47:34 AM

Alan <>< yes...unfortunately i've tried all of those things except for TRYING it in safe mode and the command line.....what is the command for that?nvm i just tried it from command prompt and it gave me the same answer.... :\ i checked another forum that had similar symptoms as mine and they discovered that it was caused by mal-ware...iim downloading malwarebytes right now...hope it works. I'm still open to other suggestions though!
Did you use the -f switch at the command prompt?

If you suspect malware I suggest that you consult the CH authorised malware removal specialists on the Computer viruses and malware forum before proceeding with Malwarebytes.Run chkdsk /r once.

Solve : Locking Folders?

Answer»

Hi,

First post for me. Something tells me it might not be the last

I'd like to lock some folders.I click on properties, go to Sharing but the box that says, "Make this folder private" is grayed out. I can't make any folders private. Any ideas as to what might be up with this? My operating system is XP. I have an HP Pavilion a1210n.

(please don't crack on my HP. It can't help what it is. Besides...it could be worse. It could be a compaq...oh...wait...)Surely you could use the security tab and check boxes there to SUIT you chosen settings.

If you are admin and have password protection then you should be able to decide exactly what you want to deny for any other user - read, write, execute etc.I am the admin but I see no security tab. There's no security tab in the Properties box of the file I want to lock. In the control panel there are things that might apply but I guess I just don't know how to use them...things like Security Center, ADMINISTRATIVE Tools, and Folder Options. But nothing seems to be what I need to fix this. Quote

I am the admin but I see no security tab.

Hmmm - I wonder if there maybe needs to be another user set up other than just admin - and then the security tab might show. However thinking about it this still may not do exactly what you want, unless you use a password logon and another for a guest user - then perhaps have 'guest' set up for permissions.

I am sure tho there really should be some simple way to lock a folder with it's own password protection - which is all you need. I cannot think of an approach but maybe yet someone can.It doesn't sound like you are logged on to the Admin account...see thats another weird thing. there's only one account. HP_administrator. Its a home computer that I share with my wife and kids and I know they haven't set up any alternate account (not that I'd know if they did but I don't get a choice of accounts...only the hp_administrator one)I think its because you don't have another account active for your computer.
try making another account
then see if it is greyd out,
if its not delete that accounttry to do this:
open up any folder -> NEXT go to file menu -> choose tool -> then select folder option-> in the folder option dialog box -> select view -> go to advanced SETTING -> then untick(remove) selection "use simple file sharing(recommended" -> dont forget to apply and click ok.

after you do this, everytime you click on any folder propertiesa new option "security" is added. with that option simply allow or disallowed any action for users. To DISABLE this option, simply follow upper steps and select(tick) the selection.

Solve : Irritating Noise Please Help!?

Answer»

Hi, Ive had my computer for 2 years, and like a month after i got it it has been making a really weird noise- and its been doing it since - it sounds like its coming from inside the hard drive. Its a kind of Whirring noise, and i know its NOT the fan because i can hear the fan behind this noise. Any ideas?
System specs are..
Packard Bell Windows XP Media Center Edition
Version 2002
Service Pack 3
AMD Athlon 64 Processor
3400+
2.40GHz, 512 MB of RAM
My graphics card is ATI Radeon 9500.
HELPP!

HDD's spin constantly at high speeds and can cause what is known as harmonic distortion...the SOUND is magnified by the case itself and/or the parts around it.
If you are inclined you could try removing the drive and use some small rubber or cork washers for the hold down screws...this may quiet things a bit.

Just to be on the safe side DLoad and run the FREE diagnostics from the drive manuf. site to make SURE the drive itself is healthy and can be trusted with your data...somebody said it was because i had low RAM. Could this make a whirring noise? When there is low RAM it is the PC NUT that males a whining noise! aha, so if i buy more RAM the noise will calm down?
Quote from: dslgeek on OCTOBER 27, 2008, 11:25:13 PM

When there is low RAM it is the PC NUT that males a whining noise!

Whats a PC NUT?I dont think you would need an extra RAM for this. Just as what Patio said, dload hd diagnostic tools for your hd to be sure that it is trustworthy. And also make sure that it screws in tight to your casing.Ignore the RAM issue and the comments that followed...it's ridiculous.
The noise is from a hardware component.
Follow the hard drive advice first i posted above.

Second thing to check would be each fan...this can be tested by opening a side panel and powering up the machine.
Use a soft implement to stop each fan temporarily to see if the noise abates...if it does you have found the offending fan and it should be replaced immediately.
I use a chicken feather for this but you can use anythin that's not going to break from the force of the fan.
DO NOT stop the fans for very long...remember you are just seeking out where the excessive noise is from.

Most Desktops will have fans on the following:
Case fans 1; 2 or in some cases more.
On top of the CPU on the motherboard.
On the video card.
At the rear of the case.
Inside the power supply unit.

Good LUCK; be careful and pay attention.

Solve : Problem registering vbscript.dll and jscript.dll?

They're both working on my one user but on the other they don't want to SEEM to register.

I've done the things listed here: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=831430

The only thing that I see stand out is that on this user I don't have the first registry key as listed in that link. Any help as to REMEDY the PROBLEM or entering that first registry key would be much appreciated.

And no, I don't have the Windows XP disc.

Also, some things like Windows media player and the search dialog box aren't working properly (WMP not loading at all, search dialog is blank). The system restore is functional in case I do have to roll the system back.

Solve : Making a Batch file start up several apps.?

Answer»

I am trying to make a batch file that when CLICKED on will open several apps and set curtain settings. When I click it, it needs to first set my ATI overdrive graphics profile to my high performance one. Then start a program that INCREASES the FOV for my widescreen monitor in FarCry2. Then start a trainer program also for farcry and if at all possible auto set INFINITE health only (Enemies that are at every intersection are a pain in the rear). And finally open the game through STEAM. Here is what I GOT so far and when click on, just starts up several other dos windows.

(whatever needs to be in here to load catalyst profile)
start "D:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\far cry 2\FOV.exe"
start "D:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\far cry 2\train.exe"
start "D:\Program Files\Steam\steam.exe" -applaunch 19900

Thanks in advance. Here is what I got now and it works flawlessly, however I still don't understand how to load a Catalyst Control Center profile in batch.

start /d "D:\Fraps" Fraps.exe
start /d "D:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\far cry 2" FOV.exe
start /d "D:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\far cry 2" train.exe
"D:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\far cry 2\bin\farcry2.exe"
taskkill /im fraps.exe -f
taskkill /im FOV.exe
taskkill /im train.exe
Never mind sorry I posted way to soon. Figured it out myself. So if anyone else every googles this here is what the final is:

"D:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI.ACE\Core-Static\CLI.exe" Start Load profilename="Gaming"
start /d "D:\Fraps" Fraps.exe
start /d "D:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\far cry 2" FOV.exe
start /d "D:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\far cry 2" train.exe
"D:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\far cry 2\bin\farcry2.exe"
"D:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI.ACE\Core-Static\CLI.exe" Start Load profilename="Default"
taskkill /im fraps.exe -f

can you tell me where's the problem? Error STARTED when i installed an antivirus software.
please include also possible solutions.
thanks...
Do you only have the one anti-virus, as more than one can cause conflicts.

If it happened after you installed the anti-virus, can you uninstall it, then reboot. I think we need a bit more info.

Please click hereWhich antivirus did you installed?thanks for the replies.

actually the computer was OWNED by my friend. I installed 2 antivirus SOFTWARES on the computer, AVIRA and Avast. I got an error message after I installed avast.

Here's the real problem, the computer boots then after 1 or 2 minutes, the cpu shuts down and can't be booted again.

Is the probelm with the software only or with the hardware also.

My friend said that it was exposed to direct sunlight.

Any possible solution please..

You should only have ONE anti-virus on your computer. Any more than one will cause conflicts in the computer.
Uninstall one of the anti-virus's before you do anything else.

If the computer shuts down before you uninstall, try uninstalling in Safe Mode

You can access Safe Mode by repeatedly pressing F8 during start-up.DLoad and install SpeedFan and post your Temps here...
Most common reasons for shutdowns are heat issues...
How long has this been happening ? ?

Probably an overheating issue.......

Solve : computer freezes after new install?

Answer»

I had a BAD virus attack that decimated my system plus was causing system freezes randomly after approximately 10 minutes of use. Long story short my system was freezing even after the infection was cleaned so I re-installed Windows (XP Pro sp2). My COMPUTER is still freezing on boot up. Alternately at the black Windows screen with the loading bar, the blue welcome screen, or very occasionally it will boot up fine and freeze right after boot up (on the desktop). Safe mode seems to boot up FULLY functional but also freezes after 20 minutes or so.

I have re-formatted both hard drives, installed windows separately on each drive (several times) and tried booting up with only one HDD connected. I have tried just about everything I know, but I'm starting to THINK hardware problem. Help?

As an update I tried removing each RAM stick and booting up with only one installed. It still freezes with either RAM stickHmmm. sorry for the double post.

Here is the CPU info

And the Mainboard

And the memory

And here is the speedfan report

Memtest found no errors. I ran 7 passes on each ram stick, then on both together to be safe. All seems well there.Who cleaned the infection?I cleaned the infection.

The virus blocked access to any major well-known antivirus or PC repair utilities and websites, but I found an obscure little program called stopsign that allowed me to at least get rid of the virus.

It didn't really give me much info on the virus. It was a Trojan that started from a file in the system32 folder. That's about all it told me.

After that the system files were so screwed up that I just re-installed Windows (with a full format after deleting the main partition.)

I assume that cleaned the virus off...

Someone mentioned physically resetting the BIOS using jumpers, but I really don't know how to do that.

Solve : changing download location?

Answer»

Everytime i try to download a progam such as yahoo messenger, kazaa or anything for that matter i can't. It says it's being downloaded to temporary internet files but as soon as i click run and it "says" that it's done downloading but then nothing HAPPENS and i can't find the file somebody plz help!!!!!!!!!!!!! Depends on your Browser...
In Firefox it's under Tools/Options/Main/Downloads...
I don't touch IE so wait for instructions from someone who does...In IE you should usually have a dialog asking for ''run'' or ''save'' and ''save'' should then allow choice on location to store. Also if a link SHOWS as direct to an .exe for EXAMPLE, RIGHT click and ''save target'' can be useful.

One useful fix might be to get a download manager - I use "Internet Download Manager" - which is a paid app, but there are one or TWO which I recall are free tho they carry ad baggage. "Gozilla" I seem to remember was one of those. Advantage can be that you ''intercept'' a download and have greater control over it.

Solve : XP Administrator Sign in Problem?

Answer»

Hello,

Alright, so i upgraded my shuttle hard drive to 250gb. Installed windows on it and tried to get all my settings right. I'm having a slight problem with the administrator, though.

I don't want windows to AUTOMATICALLY sign into the administrator so i went to computer management, users, and disabled the administrator. Now when I start up windows it tells me that the account has been disabled. Yes i REALISE i disabled it, but why do i get this message? Why doesn't it just log onto my other account?

The main reason this is a problem is because even this isn't working properly. 90% of the time this message box only pops up for a second and then it disappears and it tries to log into the administrator. It doesn't EVER log on so i'm stuck on the signing in screen forever. What i've been having to do is click the ok on the dialog box before it disappears so it takes me to the welcome screen.

If you've been understanding what i've been saying than do you have any ideas?

If you know how to get windows to automatically log into my user account that would probably work.

thanksTweakUI is the easy solution to that problem. There's a configuration setting that allows you to auto logon with a specific user account.

Alternatively, you can do this in the registry, but TweakUI is just easier. It sounds like auto log on was set up for the administrator account and by disabling the administrator account it is now ATTEMPTING to PERFORM an impossible action. Oops.

As stated by killerb255, TweakUI is probably the easiest solution.

Solve : Windows freezes just before desktop.?

Answer»

I'm a total NOVICE when it comes to computers and for years mine has been crashing and losing files, most likely because of spyware and/or viruses. I havent really bothered to do ANYTHING about it, but now it's comepletly screwed up and won't load past the log on screen. I'd appreciate any suggestions on to how to fix it. What Operating SYSTEM?

Any error messages?It's a pentium 3 running windows 98.

There aren't any error messages, but after I HIT reset it runs scan disk to check C: and mentions something about clusters, which I havent come across before. Do you let it check the disk?

What is the exact message?Okay, now it's GETTING interesting.
Now when scan disk runs, a message appears saying it has detected an invalid long file name.

I can no longer even reach the log on screen, instead a message appears saying Windows has detected a registry configuration error. And Windows found an error in your system files and was unable to fix the problem.

Another message says to "Delete files or install windows to a new directory" but I don't see how I can do that if I can't log on.

Aswell as "Cannot find SYSTEM.INI." Does any of this have something to do with my setup configuration?

Thanks for any replies."something" about clusters?

Bad clusters, perhaps? Possible bad hard drive?

Solve : Help My Dell Broke?

Answer»

Hello all,

Please Help, my Dell Latitude today I got the error message windows cannot START because the file is missing or corrupted "windows root system32 ntoskrnl.exe" please reinstall. So the first THING I tried was just to reinstall windows.

Turn on-f12-boot from disc-press enter...and I take my to the windows install screen I think

I pressed "set up windows xp now press enter" and then f8 to agree to the terms then it says "the following list shows the existing partitions and unpartioned space. to set up windows xp on the selected item press enter, to create a partition in the unpartioned space press c. to delete selected partition press d." I deleted all the partioned space and created a new unpartioned space. When it goes through the formating phase it says
stops and gives me an error message and tells my windows shut down to PROTECT my computer.

What do I do??

Hi,

Sorry to hear your having computer issues. If you can give US the exact wording of the error it would be of great help. This is before setup starts... ACTUALLY setting up on the drive, then?

Solve : XP BSOD Won't Boot at all.?

Answer»

Okay, I was downloading Microsoft's Service Pack 3(2 Days ago) and it stopped working after about an hour(I was doing other things at the time) and I watched it for about 10 minutes wondering why it wasn't doing anything, so I tried to close the application and it would not respond, so, seeing that I have a laptop, I took the power out of the computer since nothing was responding and LEFT the computer alone for awhile. Then, a couple of hours later, I decided to go on the computer. Everything seemed NORMAL but, after the Windows XP screen with the blue bars, the screen turned black with everything but a cursor. The BSOD happens right after my cursor starts spazzing out. I've tried everything I could do to get past it. Safe Mode and all of the F8 things in the menu do not work at all. They get the same result. Blue Screen of Death. I'm looking around my house right now for this disc that was supposedly included with my laptop but I can't seem to find one. This isn't urgent seeing I'm about to go out but, please does anyone know the solution to this? Also, the BSOD says C00000021A. I hope that helps also. Thanks to everyone in advance. It wasn't a very wise idea to interrupt the installation process of Service Pack 3. Doing this may (and probably did) corrupt some of your boot files.

It would be a good idea to locate the disc that came with your system...

HOPEFULLY you performed a backup of your system before this all happened...otherwise, you've pretty much lost your data and any other important files you may have wanted to save.

When you are performing a Service Pack update...these things usually take time...

It is also suggested that you not interfere with the process and that it may appear your system is not responding, when, in fact, it is updating files.

Your interruption of the process has caused the issue you are facing...Quote from: Saviour on October 19, 2008, 12:54:40 PM

Is there any solution to this then? Or am I litterally screwed? Because I can't find this disc, nor do I even remember a disc coming with the laptop itself. Also, the last Service Pack didn't take an hour so that's what was the ODD part about it. That's mainly the reason I cancelled it off. Okay, I was thinking about getting it on Ebay put that sounds better(Tbh I didn't think they sold it ) I'll come back to this if it doesn't work. Just to check, how would I download this software onto my computer. I know it has to come from a disc seeing that it's the only slot but, since it won't boot should I just use F12(Which is the boot menu) and press CD/DVD/CD-RW Drive? Hey I know this is double posting but, I was just wondering, since I've found the discs that came with my laptop, and I've tried Service Pack 2(Which seems is the most reasonable one to work) via the boot menu. It hasn't worked, is there any other way to boot the CD-ROM and MAKE the computer work? Or am I just doing something wrong?

Edit: It seems that I think I hit Internal HDD by accident. I'm trying the CD-ROM now. It looks like it might work.

Solve : xp boots to blinking cursor?

Answer»

I have a computer with XP pro installed on it. When I turned it on the other DAY right after the POST test it just has a blinking cursor in the top left side of screen. I looked through some of the other post in the forums and tried what I found to try to fix the PROBLEM. I put in my XP CD and reset the computer. It said to press any key to boot from cd, I was doing something else and didn't hit a key and the computer booted correctly into Windows. I tried to boot NORMALLY again, and it was the blinking cursor. I put the windows cd in again and this time I hit the key to boot from cd. I went into the recovery console and can chkdsk /r and chkdsk /r /f and everything was ok with both. I ram fixmbr and it still boots to the blinking cursor. But it will keep booting correctly if the windows cd is in and I don't hit a key to boot from the cd. What do I need to do to get it to boot normally without the cd in the DRIVE? Thanks.

ChrisI forgot to put that I also went into the boot options and selected last known good configuration and that didn't change anything. I also went into disk management and it showed a healthy hard drive with no problems.Try Windows repair: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

Solve : Unable to boot from boot up disc?

Answer»

Please move if I have posted in the wrong section!

I have a 2 year old Acer Aspire (XP Home MCE edition SP3 installed) as it did not come with any XP discs and the backup discs I MADE when I got the pc don't seem to work, I created an emergency boot up disc 'just in case' . I tested the disc and the pc ignored the disc and booted up as normal so I altered both the BIOS settings and the Acer boot up menu to start from CD/DVD drive first and Hard drive SECOND. I rebooted again and the same THING happened - pc booted as normal, I made a further disc just in case it was the disc. Same thing happened.

I remember some time back I disabled autoplay as I didn't always want dvd or cd's starting straight away, however, when I go into properites for this drive the only options appear to be for films, music, pictures etc and to pick a program to play it with, I just want to be able to boot up from an emergency disc in case anything happens! Any help appreciated.

Are you watching the screen when computer starts? At some point, you'll see:
"Press any key to boot from CD".Can you see and access the contents of your disc in My Computer?

If you can, maybe you haven't catch up the "Press any key to boot from CD" message that appears on your screen during start up....

If you cannot, try cleaning your CD/DVD drive with a disc cleaner.....

Dirt and dust on your CD/DVD drive lens can cause read errors....

Solve : Memory could not be "read" any idea's??

Answer»

When I log off my computer I often get this messege, "The memory could not be 'read' '0x01cc7902'". I upgraded to 1g of memory to try to fix this problem but it still happens and the 1g SEEMS to work fine.

The only other error messege I get is about Windows explorer needing to 'shut down' sometimes; often I still stay on the internet anyway or let it close and restart from the start menu fine.

Any help would be terrific! 1) When did this start happening? Did anything new get installed/uninstalled?
2) Google "Memtest 86." RUN that and see if you have bad RAM.Thanks for the reply, the problem began after I got high speed internet through Qwest; maybe a month or so after. The only things newly installed at the time were Runscape and Avernum2. I'm not really sure if the problem began before the games or not; I think it did.

I googled Memtest 86 and found the soft ware, the problem is that I'm not sure what to do with it now that it's on my computer and ALSO a cd. I tried downloadiing it and that didn't work, so I enabled cookies hoping that would help; it did download the FILE, but it won't run or even creat a short cut so I can ACCESS it with out trying to open the file with the mouse. I even tried saving it to a cd to see if that would help, and it still won't run.

I'm afraid I'm not sure what to do nextThe memory could not be read error most likely has nothing to do with computer's physical memory, but it's rather caused by software problem.
Start with checking Event Viewer.

My gateway MONITOR died exactly a week after the warranty expired. (Microsoft window 98)
After several times of turning COMPUTER on and off w/ out the monitor(dumb), I hooked up a new monitor.
The computer would not let me start up or reboot in safe mode and said I needed to reinstall the operating system. Which I did and when asked to reinstall w/ backup I pick YES.
Well guess what nothing backed up and I lost everything.
I had a FRIEND of my son's come over (who is supposed to be computer savvy) and he said "oh well" its all gone!

Is there anyway to find lost photos, files etc.
Do any of the FREE recovery tools work for this?

Solve : Computer Temperatures High?

Answer»

Here's the problem... I decided to overclock my Geforce 6200 video card. After tweaking, my computer STARTED freezing constantly (games, movies, running programs). The screen would also turn black for about 6 seconds and come back on. The screen would also turn really bright colors. I uninstalled everything that had to do with tweaking. But the problems persist. Here's a http://img263.imageshack.us/my.php?image=ssvv3.jpgreading of my computer temperature with SpeedFan.

I did a desperate thing and removed my floppy drive from my computer. I am just trying to cool it down... When opened, i tried to air out my computer a little. I started up my computer and in SpeedFan, the temperatures of the GPU and Core remain the same.

So my questions:
1. My other computer's temperatures are around 10-30. Is it possible to take a fan out, and put it in my current one with the problems? I don't know what a computer fan looks like so if possible, is there a guide, and is it somewhat easy?
2. Can i just install another firmware for my Geforce 6200 to fix the problems?
3. If needed, which fan is compatible with a Pentium 4 for $20-

Thanks a lot.

Thanks
what programs did you use for tweaking? did you reset these programs back to defaults BEFORE uninstalling them?

The turning black- that was your graphics driver crashing HARD- thankfully it recovered most of the time.

from the sounds of things, you might have permanently damaged your graphics card. If the sensor is damaged as well, it's possible it is reading temperatures that are higher then their actual temperature.

It's possible, but probably not a good idea- especially with OEM cases where fans are placed in specific configurations to optimize cooling.

Firmware, (or more precisely, the Video BIOS) as far as I'm concerned, should NEVER be flashed, except in special circumstances- your card appears to be a write-off at this point, but a video BIOS flash should only be performed as a last ditch effort.

since your obviously having a little heat problem (the CPU is 59, which isn't terrible, but lower is always better).

have you cleaned out any dust on heatsinks?

Ok, i used RivaTuner, Nvidia Performance, and AtiTools(didn't change settings, just scanned for artifacts). I'll try installing the programs and reset the settings to default.

Also, i will try and use the on board graphics instead of the card to see if there's a difference.

Yeah, i have an OEM case i think. I bought the computer a long time ago from a store and have only added ram and a graphics card since.

Could there be any relationship between failed overclocking and heat issues?

I haven't yet tried cleaning the heatsinks. Is there an easy way to clean it?
If i reformat my computer, it probably would not solve the graphics card's problems, right?

Thanks a lot.Your said:
Quote

Could there be any relationship between failed overclocking and heat issues?
Yes, that is why the maker does not recommend overclocking!overclock = increased heat
If it's running faster, it's gonna get HOTTER. If you want to overclock, you'll need to buy an aftermarket cooler to avoid damages...An aftermarket cooler is no guarantee damage will not occur...just check the Overclockers Forums for proof...Okay, let me rephrase that:

"If you want to overclock, you'll need to buy a good aftermarket cooler and monitor your temperatures closely to reduce the chances of damage."

How's that? Much more concise...Thanx.

Actually, his first post was more concise. The second is more correct. Ok thanks for the help everyone.

Before i try anything else, i would like to add a fan from my other computer into my current one. The other pc is a CELERON, and the temperatures are all very low. So could i just take out a fan? Does it matter if it's a rear, or front fan?

OH yeah, can i just take my electric air pump and blow air into my computer to clean it out? Or will it damage it even if i am far away?Quote from: Eg0Death on October 31, 2008, 09:59:22 AM

Solve : Serious problem on my system!?

Answer»

Dell Dimension DIM 9100 Intel (R) Pentium (R) 4 CPU 3.00 GHz, 2.99GHz, 1.50GB of RAM. The OS I'm running is XP, home edition, version 2002, service pack 2, presume it might need updating when my PC becomes stable enough. In safe-mode I completely searched my computer for any threats using Ad-Aware '08 which is a freeware I understand, but I only came up with a couple of cookies which have been there for a couple of full searches, sometimes SAID "Will remove files after a restart!" still there, but I presumed it was nothing serious to worry about.

I know some stuff about computers, not so much the technical, computer building kind of info, I know about files types etc, what ever music (big music geek) and design has needed me to know about to do college work in photography and graphic illustration.

My most recent upgrade which is one of 2 hardware upgrade is a simple external hard-drive (Maxtor Basics 500GB) which I bought last weekend which hasn't been a problem and has worked fine when C&P'ing files to and from my internal hard-drive to the external. Most of my music & video is on the external now, apart from the few films I have on download through BitTorrent which is paused now while I try to sort my PC out.

It first started a few weeks ago when I went to my PC to boot it up, it took a few starts to turn on properly kind of like a car would when it was getting old, not happened before but presumed it was something that came with an old PC like mine. It stopped for a while, and has been happing once or twice whilst I have be en having my serious errors recently.

The problem came on when the PC was already on and turned it self off, booted up again and brought me a warning screen, blue background saying something like Windows has turned your PC off to protect your files and info from being lost... if this is the first time it's happened, reboot your pc and choose from the screen run Windows normally. I turn the PC off and on again, resetting it, comes up with the blackscreen it warned me about with a few options; Run safe mode, run safe mode with networking (which enables internet I presume, internet doesn't work in the 'normal' safe mode) and then the 3rd one which is Run safe mode with command propt. Then you have the choices of Run computer with last sucessful configuration or something then the final one which is run windows normally.

I have tried all of them,

Run Windows normally - takes me back to the blue screen.
Run last sucessful configuration - takes me back to the blue screen.
& the other 3 do what they say on the tin, run safe mode.

The error codes I GET are "SESSION3_INITIALIZION_FAILED" & "***STOP: 0x0000006F (0x0000020, 0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

I can't tell you how appreciative I'd be if someone could help me out, beyond words.

I regularly do disk cleans ups, not done a disk frag for a while because my internal was full and you need atleast 15% free memory until I got the external HDD, I'm currently doing one one on the internal at the mo. After this has been done, ill unplug all USB applications.ALL USB applications (memory stick, USB hub, external hard drive) all disconnected, continued to not work. Done disk frag & disk clean up on the internal. Can't do Windows Update due to only being able to run the PC in safe mode. Going to try system restore again, but don't have many put back points due to me stupidly using all the memory for files rather than system restore dates.

Is there not a site I can use to look up the code errors that come up on the warning screen?Quote

0x0000006F: SESSION3_INITIALIZATION_FAILED
(Click to consult the online MSDN article.)
The process creation failure indicated by this error message can only happen during the fairly brief time that the Windows Executive is being initialized, which is during phase 4 of Windows startup. Typically there is a problem with a device driver or with a missing or corrupt system file used during Windows startup.

What MS SuggestsI'm running Windows XP thorugh? it says it only applies to;

"• Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
• Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
• Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional Edition
• Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server
• Microsoft Windows NT WORKSTATION 3.51
• Microsoft Windows NT Server 3.51"

I have a Dell programme which enables me to write my Windows Operating System to disk, I presume so I can format the computer, could this be used as a last resort?

I don't see how I could of lost or erased the files that are stopping my system from running properly, it's been a while since I have been through Local Disk (C:) > programe files deleting irrelevants files which I don't have the software on my PC any LONGER.

If it's possible, could you by any chance translate the following so it's easier for me to understand?

"If the Windows Operating System is installed on a FAT partition, copy the initialization file to the %SystemRoot%\System32 directory. If Windows NT 3.51 or 4.0 is installed on an NTFS partition, reinstall Windows NT to a separate directory. Log on as the same user with the same permissions and copy the initialization file to the %SystemRoot%\System32 directory. If Windows 2000 is installed on an NTFS partition use the Recovery Console to replace system files. For instructions on relacing system files using the recovery console see:"

It seems I have to get the Windows Recovery Console, but I don't own the XP disc or I do but I have NO idea where it is in my household & I am phased with this;

"Because the Recovery Console is quite powerful, it is RECOMMENDED for use only by advanced users or administrators."

I don't think I know nowhere near enough, too much computer coding. Looking through all the manuals etc that came with my PC, I found a leaflet which says "Your new computer does not require an operating system CD or drivers CDs. Instead if you ever need to reinstall software, use one of the following methods; System Restore & Dell PC Restore. If you use the Dell Restore all the data and programs you have installed will be gone...it basically takes the machine back to Day One status.
Can you borrow an XP CD for the time being ? ?
It has to match your version and service packs currently installed...for example if you are running XPPro and have service pack 2 installed the CD needs to be XPPro w/SP2.

It's completely legal for you to borrow a CD to repair your existing installation.
Unfortunately an OEM (Dell) CD will not do...

Solve : Nothing After User Select Screen?

Answer»

Nah. That's correct one.
Maybe bad download/burn?
You may want to retry.I downloaded and BURNT it 3 more times and the mouse STILL doesn't move and the arrow keys still don't do anything The PROBLEM with Toshiba is, they don't provide HD diagnostic tool. SEAGATE tool seems to work on MANY Toshiba computers.
Try Hitachi tool.

Solve : password retrieval?

Answer»

I GOT a computer at a pawn shop. Its running winXP. It has two accounts on it, ADMINISTRATOR and Guest. I was okay this far logging onto the Guest ACCOUNT to do my stuff, but now I need to download and install a program (ADOBE), but I cant because obviously the Guest account has no administrator priviledges.

Is there a way to retrieve the administrator password so I can log in?
Nope, absolutely no way we can help you.

Its against the forum RULES for us to help you with such a topic. Hmmm,
okay, then I guess I should go ahead and install a fresh copy of winXP

Solve : Checking file system on C:?

Answer»

I just built a new computer, and have been having trouble getting it to boot into normal mode. It will boot into safe mode no problem. Earlier it would get to the little LOADING bar at the bottom of the screen, then not go any further with the boot process, and now it says this;

Checking file SYSTEM on C:
The VOLUME is clean.
Windows has finished checking the disk.

But now it just stays at this screen, and I can't boot still, any suggestions or answers would be appreciatedDid the computer ever work?
When you installed windows on the computer, did you get any error messages?Yeah, was working fine yesterday.I've never SEEN anything like "The volume is clean" message.
Are you sure?Quote from: Broni on January 11, 2009, 11:07:04 PM

how so?

I see it all the time. It means the dirty bit wasn't set on the drive, so AUTOCHK didn't bother checking it.

Solve : Windows XP Installation Problem?

Answer»

I have a old Windows 98 a computer and decided to put Windows XP on it. Everything works fine until the time is at 0 at the end of installation and then it goes into a black screen and stays there even though the computer is still on. What do I do? Please help I would check the system specs to SEE if you have enough horsepower to run XP on that machine.
You can DLoad and install Everest Home and run a report on your machine.
Save it as a text file and post the computer summary portion here.It is actually a friends computer and the Windows 98 is corrupted so I can't even boot up in anyway.Reinstall Win98 and go from there...
Or throw a LINUX Distro on there...Ubuntu is good. That is what I was going to TRY next but I MIGHT have to do 2000 instead of 98 because I don't know if I have a 98 DISC.

Solve : Help with Windows XP PLEASE!?

Answer»

Hello I just registered with Computer HOPE. My user ID is toten44. This is my first time asking a question through the forum. Here goes, I was recently given a Compaq Presario Model SR1130NX. The processor is an ADM Athlon XP3000+MMX 3D NOW 2.1 GHZ with 512mb of memory. The problem is that when I received the computer it did not have a hard drive or the Compaq operating/restore disk. I PURCHASED a 280g hard drive. I ASKED my brother to install the drive and Windows XP. Decided to download Compaq drivers. The problem is my hard drive is labeled [|:]. A REMOVABLE disk drive is labled[C:]. Compaq drivers only recognize C drive. How can I change Local drive to C drive so that I can install Compaq drivers to read cd-r, dvd player, and graphics drivers? Also I have Windows XP pro disk. When I start the computer no BIOS come up, goes straight to XP screen. Please remember I am a NEWBIE and I have never formated a drive before, a true novice. Any help would be appreciated, Thank you. Welcome Aboard toten...

Solve : To much heat??

Answer»

I just did a new build for the wife, it consists of Intel DG31GL, Intel E2200, Seagate 160 Gig HD, 2Gig of Kingston memory and a NEC DVD RECORDER installed in a Antec NSK1380. I just installed speed fan and come up with some high temp on the system. System 55C, CPU 46C, AUX 127C, core 0 32C, core 1 31C. All fans are working, only one COMES off the motherboard. The CPU fan is the only one that comes off the motherboard. Now that I know all the fans are working and the temp are high what do I do? Since it's a new build i'm assumong dust is not the issue...
Did you remember to apply thermal paste between the heatsink and CPU ? ?

Thermal Paste GuideNo dust and yes it has paste.I just finished up a chat with Intel. They tell me that the max recommended temp is 73.3C for the E2200 and that the motherboard is 97C. So they said I don't have a problem and that every thing is fine. I for got to tell you that they had me up date the BIOS. Why I don't know but they did and I did. It didn't change any thing.Quote from: I SHOOTER on January 06, 2009, 08:24:42 PM

AUX 127C
This one is very high. What is it? It is from speed fan. I have no idea what it is. Yes, I thought it was high. It didn't seem to bother Intel. The only numbers they were interested in where from bios.

Solve : Black Screen at startup?

Answer»

Hello,

I am having a problem trying to get my computer to start. When I hit the power button the light come on for the CD Rom Drives, but I hear no beep signifying that the computer is booting up. Nothing is happening. I have rebooted several times and still get the same thing. If I unplugged the computer, turning it off completely, sometimes it will boot up and then cut off after a few minutes. Now I can't even get it to do that anymore.

I have REPLACE the power supply and monitor with new ones because the old monitor cord had a short in it. The power supply had one too I guess ( slightest bump and the computer would turn off).

I have tried booting from a boot disk to get back in...it worked at 1st ....but if I turn the computer off, we are right back where we started. Now I can not get in at all (black screen). I have test the hard drive and FLOPPY in another computer and it works just fine. So I am not sure what is causing the problem other than my motherboard just died.

Specs:
Motherboard - Matsonic (MSKM400A-M) (Socket "A" AMDK7)

Chipset - VIA (VT8237) (KM400A)

BIO - AMIBIOS (ST82-8065) RELEASE date 7/15/04
- AMERICAN MEGATREND INC. (62-00715-001131-00101111-040201-VIA_K7- KM400A)

Power supply is new (ATX 430watt)

OS - WINDOWS XP SP3

Graphics Card - Ge Force 5500oc 128MB AGP

At this point I am pulling my hair out because I use this computer for on-line schooling and I have a midterm due on Tuesday, but I can get into my computer. If anyone can help me out at this point, you would be a life saver.

Thanks,
Reggie

Solve : Certification...or Degree??

Answer»

Hey everyone,

I am just trying to get some personal opinions on a SUBJECT that a lot of people here might frequent as "computer techies". I am planning on getting training in the Information Technology INDUSTRY, and was wondering what does everyone think is more profitable, taking classes to get Certified, or going for an actual Associates/Bachelors Degree. When I say "profitable", I dont just mean in terms of money. I also mean in the info I might get from one, that I might not get from the other. I've attended both a University, and a two year trade school, and I know the pro's and con's of each. Only thing is, that time and money was spent on another trade. Everyones opinions and comments are welcome. As long as they are helpful/productive. Thanks.IMHO a degree will open more doors and therefore could provide more opportunities for personal satisfaction than will certification. However having a degree lends to the often used reason for rejection that one is "overqualified" for a position, a sort of Catch22 situation. (Been there). As you do not seem to have cost and/or time constraints I would recommend going for studies towards a degree..

Good luck

I'm obviously not even to that point in my life yet, but, I am looking at a certificate for these reasons:
I know anything I learn software will be out of date soon. I dont want to spend an incredible amount of time working on things I dont need that you must complete for a degree.

Money. A degree always costs more.

Time. I want to be done with college in two years.

Money, reason two: The more classes, the more text books!

On the other side:
If I couldent get a job in the System Administration career I wanted, I could work higher up elsewhere, since I would qualify for all sorts of jobs. This is the only major strong point of a degree I can think of.

Also, a tech person just warned me today:
Stay away from technical schools. Lot of money, lot of time. He got out with an education, but, it could have been more for what he paid for. Quote from: Zylstra on January 09, 2009, 06:00:56 PM

I recently took an acceptance test for a technical school near me that only trains for Microsoft Certifications. I received a call two days in a row from the assistant director or WHATEVER she was, wanting me to enroll immediately. She didn't want to discuss financing options with me over the phone...probably because they wanted almost $30,000.00 USD! For only SIX MONTHS OF TRAINING! That is just too much if you ask me. In six months, I would have a MCTS, MCP, MCSA, and possibly CAT 5 Cabling certified. Don't know if thats a good deal for 30 large, and six months, but I think i'll shop around.Take a look at COMMUNITY colleges that you have around.

If your planning to work on servers, make sure their program teaches you Windows 2003 or 2008, I wouldent go below that.
Also, if all they have is Linux, I would throw that option out the window. Linux isnt bad, but, most work places expect Windows, and Windows they shall get. To me, its important to understand both.

Yeah, I AGREE on the MS/Linux thing. I just wonder if a community college would offer the same training as a tech. school. I know it would defenitly be cheaper.Quote from: t_blake07 on January 10, 2009, 09:10:57 PM

Of course. The only problem you might run across:
Sometimes, even for a certificate, in a community college or other college, you will need to sign up for classes such as Math 97, English 101, Business communication 96, and so on, even if you dont really need them. Quote from: Zylstra on January 10, 2009, 09:14:44 PM

Yeah, when I went to the university, I had taken a couple of gen-ed's that transfered to the comm. college. The good thing about the comm. college though, is that there were only a fraction of the number of gen-ed's I would have taken at the university. I think while a comm. college takes more time than a tech. school, it is also cheaper than both a tech. school and a university.
