Solve : 4 cores only 1 active? |
Answer» Hi all, I have a Q8200 quad CORE processor which runs to my liking, however, i have a PROBLEM. I'm running an application that MAKES my computer scream for mercy, it brings my frame rate below 5, which is heavily frustrating. I looked at the performance tab and the percentage is at 25%(3 of the boxes have their lines at the bottom, the 4th box has it at the top) always, never lower, never higher, and i was wondering if theres a way to make it so the application utilizes all four cores at once instead of murdering just ONE core. |

Solve : MISSING PICTURES IN MY PICTURES FOLDER!!? |
Answer» Please help. All of my pictures in my MY PICTURES folder are gone. I downloaded RECUVA and nothing seems to have been DELETED. My only confusion is that my disk SPACE has not changed at all. I have many pictures on my PC and they do take up alot of space, so if they were deleted I assume that my disk space would have decreased. What else can I do? I've done system restores, I've searched for the folders CONTAINING the photos, I've searched for the file extensions, but nothing is COMING up. What happened prior to this ? ?Nothing out of the ordinary that I can remember. No virus or malware issues....I went into the folder and all that appeared was a set of Sample Pictures that are standard pictures on my pc. |

Solve : Removing context menus? |
Answer» i SEEM to have collected an inordinate amount of context menu items which i donit use and are just annoying be carefulThat's why, I like ShellExView: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html better. In program itself, you can only disable (not delete) context menu entry. If you sure, you WANT to remove that particular entry, one click will open regedit with related registry entry.I like tools with Gusto...but i don't always recommend them for the REGULAR user... boo hasn't hosed his System recently so i figured it was worth a shot... Solve : Covert Verticle Text to Horizontal Text? |
Answer» I am working on a batch file that scan server folder sizes and then creates data files for each folder that was scaned. Unfortunately I've GOTTEN hung up on how to convert data listed vertically to a text file with horizontal data. DataFile.Txt (Existing file Content) ABCD 1234 A2C4 1B3D ConvertedDataFile.Txt (New file content with space delimiter) ABCD 1234 A2C4 1B3D As an Overview: Attached is the .Bat the starts with a DU (System Internals) command. The commands port folder information information into a text file. The files are then washed until I have nothing but the 4 lines of vertical data per file. The main remaining task is to get the data horizontal, port horizontal data to a single file, and then import into a database. [attachment deleted by admin]Do you have Microsoft Office? You got this all wrong. You just lay the monitor on its side.! sibleytr - Welcome to the CH forums. Try the following code to convert your crlf delimited text to space delimited text. No line-wrap not even a crlf at END of file. The final character in the output file is a space. Code: [Select]@echo off cls for /f "tokens=*" %%a in (input_path\filename.ext) do ( <NUL (set/p z=%%a) >> output_path\filename.ext ) Good luck & please post back with your results. Here is my alternative: @echo off setlocal enabledelayedexpansion set output= for /f "delims==" %%L in (DataFile.Txt) do set output=!output! %%L echo %output%>ConvertedDataFile.Txt Code: [Select]'vert2horz.vbs Dim Inputfile,Outputfile dim spaced if wscript.arguments.count < 2 then showhelp else inputfile = wscript.arguments(0) outputfile = wscript.arguments(1) wscript.echo "Input file:" & inputfile wscript.echo "output file:" & outputfile 'get Filesystemobject.. set FSO = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject") 'retrieve file object, and open it as an input stream. set ReadIt = FSO.GetFile(inputfile).OpenAsTextStream(1) 'read text from input stream... Readit.close() 'create the output file... set outstream = FSO.CreateTextFile(outputfile,TRUE) 'process the input string. replace crlf with spaces. spaced = replace(alltext,chr(13) & chr(10)," ") 'write to the output. outstream.write spaced outstream.close 'all done! end if Sub ShowHelp() Wscript.echo "Vert2Horz VBScript program." Wscript.echo "Usage: [CScript] Vert2Horz <inputfile> <outputfile>" Wscript.echo "Warning: if the output file already exists, it will be overwritten!" end sub hmm, it's a bit longer then the batch file solution... and who needs error handling, anyway?Thank you Dusty and Dias - Both will do what I need... Solve : Having problems with Disk Defragmenter...ugh!? |
Answer» Ive gone around to a lot of different forums ACROSS the web, but every time I try to analyze of defragment something in disk defragmenter.....a WINDOW POPS up saying "Disk Defragmenter could not start." Have you cleaned up your disk before attempting defrag? (Disk Cleanup, CCleaner). Have you tried defrag in Safe Mode? Have you tried running defrag from the command line? How much free space do you have on the partition being defragged? (defrag likes 15% or more). Alan <>< yes...unfortunately i've tried all of those things except for TRYING it in safe mode and the command line.....what is the command for that?nvm i just tried it from command prompt and it gave me the same answer.... :\ i checked another forum that had similar symptoms as mine and they discovered that it was caused by mal-ware...iim downloading malwarebytes right now...hope it works. I'm still open to other suggestions though! Did you use the -f switch at the command prompt? If you suspect malware I suggest that you consult the CH authorised malware removal specialists on the Computer viruses and malware forum before proceeding with Malwarebytes.Run chkdsk /r once. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265 Check whether the defrag service and it's associated services (DCOM, Event log etc) are set to automatic or manual in Services. |

Solve : Locking Folders? |
Answer» Hi, I am the admin but I see no security tab. Hmmm - I wonder if there maybe needs to be another user set up other than just admin - and then the security tab might show. However thinking about it this still may not do exactly what you want, unless you use a password logon and another for a guest user - then perhaps have 'guest' set up for permissions. I am sure tho there really should be some simple way to lock a folder with it's own password protection - which is all you need. I cannot think of an approach but maybe yet someone can.It doesn't sound like you are logged on to the Admin account...see thats another weird thing. there's only one account. HP_administrator. Its a home computer that I share with my wife and kids and I know they haven't set up any alternate account (not that I'd know if they did but I don't get a choice of accounts...only the hp_administrator one)I think its because you don't have another account active for your computer. try making another account then see if it is greyd out, if its not delete that accounttry to do this: open up any folder -> NEXT go to file menu -> choose tool -> then select folder option-> in the folder option dialog box -> select view -> go to advanced SETTING -> then untick(remove) selection "use simple file sharing(recommended" -> dont forget to apply and click ok. after you do this, everytime you click on any folder propertiesa new option "security" is added. with that option simply allow or disallowed any action for users. To DISABLE this option, simply follow upper steps and select(tick) the selection. |

Solve : Irritating Noise Please Help!? |
Answer» Hi, Ive had my computer for 2 years, and like a month after i got it it has been making a really weird noise- and its been doing it since - it sounds like its coming from inside the hard drive. Its a kind of Whirring noise, and i know its NOT the fan because i can hear the fan behind this noise. Any ideas? When there is low RAM it is the PC NUT that males a whining noise! Whats a PC NUT?I dont think you would need an extra RAM for this. Just as what Patio said, dload hd diagnostic tools for your hd to be sure that it is trustworthy. And also make sure that it screws in tight to your casing.Ignore the RAM issue and the comments that followed...it's ridiculous. The noise is from a hardware component. Follow the hard drive advice first i posted above. Second thing to check would be each fan...this can be tested by opening a side panel and powering up the machine. Use a soft implement to stop each fan temporarily to see if the noise abates...if it does you have found the offending fan and it should be replaced immediately. I use a chicken feather for this but you can use anythin that's not going to break from the force of the fan. DO NOT stop the fans for very long...remember you are just seeking out where the excessive noise is from. Most Desktops will have fans on the following: Case fans 1; 2 or in some cases more. On top of the CPU on the motherboard. On the video card. At the rear of the case. Inside the power supply unit. Good LUCK; be careful and pay attention. |

Solve : ram and windows loading problems? |

Answer» ACCORDING to your explanation your computer is freeze in the window session and all the parts are working properly. Here I think problem of loading window DRIVER (any driver which is necessary for window session). If you able to find out the driver which is creating this problem, clean it (if possible) or reinstallation is I think best. Thanks for your advice. I'll do some quick checks but as you mentioned, I'll probably just be re-installing windows. It might take a day or so to get to the re-installation, but I'll let you guys know if it worked. thanks again for all the help.Hi! FRIEND, I am also using computer for several year. During this session I learn only ONE "if you have little knowledge about computer (not so little I mean the problem that is beyond your knowledge then re-installation is the best way to solve your PC problem. Here one think your should have to make sure that the problem is to be SOFTWARE not hardware problem) |

Solve : computer freezes after new install? |
Answer» I had a BAD virus attack that decimated my system plus was causing system freezes randomly after approximately 10 minutes of use. Long story short my system was freezing even after the infection was cleaned so I re-installed Windows (XP Pro sp2). My COMPUTER is still freezing on boot up. Alternately at the black Windows screen with the loading bar, the blue welcome screen, or very occasionally it will boot up fine and freeze right after boot up (on the desktop). Safe mode seems to boot up FULLY functional but also freezes after 20 minutes or so. |

Solve : XP BSOD Won't Boot at all.? |
Answer» Okay, I was downloading Microsoft's Service Pack 3(2 Days ago) and it stopped working after about an hour(I was doing other things at the time) and I watched it for about 10 minutes wondering why it wasn't doing anything, so I tried to close the application and it would not respond, so, seeing that I have a laptop, I took the power out of the computer since nothing was responding and LEFT the computer alone for awhile. Then, a couple of hours later, I decided to go on the computer. Everything seemed NORMAL but, after the Windows XP screen with the blue bars, the screen turned black with everything but a cursor. The BSOD happens right after my cursor starts spazzing out. I've tried everything I could do to get past it. Safe Mode and all of the F8 things in the menu do not work at all. They get the same result. Blue Screen of Death. I'm looking around my house right now for this disc that was supposedly included with my laptop but I can't seem to find one. This isn't urgent seeing I'm about to go out but, please does anyone know the solution to this? Also, the BSOD says C00000021A. I hope that helps also. Thanks to everyone in advance. It wasn't a very wise idea to interrupt the installation process of Service Pack 3. Doing this may (and probably did) corrupt some of your boot files. It wasn't a very wise idea to interrupt the installation process of Service Pack 3. Doing this may (and probably did) corrupt some of your boot files. Is there any solution to this then? Or am I litterally screwed? Because I can't find this disc, nor do I even remember a disc coming with the laptop itself. Also, the last Service Pack didn't take an hour so that's what was the ODD part about it. That's mainly the reason I cancelled it off. Solve : xp boots to blinking cursor? |
Answer» I have a computer with XP pro installed on it. When I turned it on the other DAY right after the POST test it just has a blinking cursor in the top left side of screen. I looked through some of the other post in the forums and tried what I found to try to fix the PROBLEM. I put in my XP CD and reset the computer. It said to press any key to boot from cd, I was doing something else and didn't hit a key and the computer booted correctly into Windows. I tried to boot NORMALLY again, and it was the blinking cursor. I put the windows cd in again and this time I hit the key to boot from cd. I went into the recovery console and can chkdsk /r and chkdsk /r /f and everything was ok with both. I ram fixmbr and it still boots to the blinking cursor. But it will keep booting correctly if the windows cd is in and I don't hit a key to boot from the cd. What do I need to do to get it to boot normally without the cd in the DRIVE? Thanks. |

If you can, maybe you haven't catch up the "Press any key to boot from CD" message that appears on your screen during start up.... Solve : Computer Temperatures High? |
Answer» Here's the problem... I decided to overclock my Geforce 6200 video card. After tweaking, my computer STARTED freezing constantly (games, movies, running programs). The screen would also turn black for about 6 seconds and come back on. The screen would also turn really bright colors. I uninstalled everything that had to do with tweaking. But the problems persist. Here's a http://img263.imageshack.us/my.php?image=ssvv3.jpgreading of my computer temperature with SpeedFan. Could there be any relationship between failed overclocking and heat issues?Yes, that is why the maker does not recommend overclocking!overclock = increased heat If it's running faster, it's gonna get HOTTER. If you want to overclock, you'll need to buy an aftermarket cooler to avoid damages...An aftermarket cooler is no guarantee damage will not occur...just check the Overclockers Forums for proof...Okay, let me rephrase that: "If you want to overclock, you'll need to buy a good aftermarket cooler and monitor your temperatures closely to reduce the chances of damage." How's that? Much more concise...Thanx. Actually, his first post was more concise. The second is more correct. Ok thanks for the help everyone. Before i try anything else, i would like to add a fan from my other computer into my current one. The other pc is a CELERON, and the temperatures are all very low. So could i just take out a fan? Does it matter if it's a rear, or front fan? OH yeah, can i just take my electric air pump and blow air into my computer to clean it out? Or will it damage it even if i am far away?Quote from: Eg0Death on October 31, 2008, 09:59:22 AM Actually, his first post was more concise. The second is more correct. Solve : Serious problem on my system!? |

Answer» Dell Dimension DIM 9100 Intel (R) Pentium (R) 4 CPU 3.00 GHz, 2.99GHz, 1.50GB of RAM. For instructions on relacing system files using the recovery console see:" It seems I have to get the Windows Recovery Console, but I don't own the XP disc or I do but I have NO idea where it is in my household & I am phased with this; "Because the Recovery Console is quite powerful, it is RECOMMENDED for use only by advanced users or administrators." I don't think I know nowhere near enough, too much computer coding. Looking through all the manuals etc that came with my PC, I found a leaflet which says "Your new computer does not require an operating system CD or drivers CDs. Instead if you ever need to reinstall software, use one of the following methods; System Restore & Dell PC Restore. If you use the Dell Restore all the data and programs you have installed will be gone...it basically takes the machine back to Day One status. Can you borrow an XP CD for the time being ? ? It has to match your version and service packs currently installed...for example if you are running XPPro and have service pack 2 installed the CD needs to be XPPro w/SP2. It's completely legal for you to borrow a CD to repair your existing installation. Unfortunately an OEM (Dell) CD will not do... |

Solve : Checking file system on C:? |
Answer» I just built a new computer, and have been having trouble getting it to boot into normal mode. It will boot into safe mode no problem. Earlier it would get to the little LOADING bar at the bottom of the screen, then not go any further with the boot process, and now it says this; I've never seen anything like "The volume is clean" message. how so? I see it all the time. It means the dirty bit wasn't set on the drive, so AUTOCHK didn't bother checking it. |

Solve : Help with Windows XP PLEASE!? |
Answer» Hello I just registered with Computer HOPE. My user ID is toten44. This is my first time asking a question through the forum. Here goes, I was recently given a Compaq Presario Model SR1130NX. The processor is an ADM Athlon XP3000+MMX 3D NOW 2.1 GHZ with 512mb of memory. The problem is that when I received the computer it did not have a hard drive or the Compaq operating/restore disk. I PURCHASED a 280g hard drive. I ASKED my brother to install the drive and Windows XP. Decided to download Compaq drivers. The problem is my hard drive is labeled [|:]. A REMOVABLE disk drive is labled[C:]. Compaq drivers only recognize C drive. How can I change Local drive to C drive so that I can install Compaq drivers to read cd-r, dvd player, and graphics drivers? Also I have Windows XP pro disk. When I start the computer no BIOS come up, goes straight to XP screen. Please remember I am a NEWBIE and I have never formated a drive before, a true novice. Any help would be appreciated, Thank you. Welcome Aboard toten... |

Answer» I just did a new build for the wife, it consists of Intel DG31GL, Intel E2200, Seagate 160 Gig HD, 2Gig of Kingston memory and a NEC DVD RECORDER installed in a Antec NSK1380. I just installed speed fan and come up with some high temp on the system. System 55C, CPU 46C, AUX 127C, core 0 32C, core 1 31C. All fans are working, only one COMES off the motherboard. The CPU fan is the only one that comes off the motherboard. Now that I know all the fans are working and the temp are high what do I do? Since it's a new build i'm assumong dust is not the issue... AUX 127CThis one is very high. What is it? It is from speed fan. I have no idea what it is. Yes, I thought it was high. It didn't seem to bother Intel. The only numbers they were interested in where from bios. |

Solve : Certification...or Degree?? |
Answer» Hey everyone, Money. A degree always costs more. I recently took an acceptance test for a technical school near me that only trains for Microsoft Certifications. I received a call two days in a row from the assistant director or WHATEVER she was, wanting me to enroll immediately. She didn't want to discuss financing options with me over the phone...probably because they wanted almost $30,000.00 USD! For only SIX MONTHS OF TRAINING! That is just too much if you ask me. In six months, I would have a MCTS, MCP, MCSA, and possibly CAT 5 Cabling certified. Don't know if thats a good deal for 30 large, and six months, but I think i'll shop around.Take a look at COMMUNITY colleges that you have around. If your planning to work on servers, make sure their program teaches you Windows 2003 or 2008, I wouldent go below that. Also, if all they have is Linux, I would throw that option out the window. Linux isnt bad, but, most work places expect Windows, and Windows they shall get. To me, its important to understand both. Yeah, I AGREE on the MS/Linux thing. I just wonder if a community college would offer the same training as a tech. school. I know it would defenitly be cheaper.Quote from: t_blake07 on January 10, 2009, 09:10:57 PM Yeah, I agree on the MS/Linux thing. I just wonder if a community college would offer the same training as a tech. school. I know it would defenitly be cheaper.Of course. The only problem you might run across: Sometimes, even for a certificate, in a community college or other college, you will need to sign up for classes such as Math 97, English 101, Business communication 96, and so on, even if you dont really need them. Quote from: Zylstra on January 10, 2009, 09:14:44 PM Quote from: t_blake07 on January 10, 2009, 09:10:57 PMYeah, I agree on the MS/Linux thing. The only problem you might run across: Yeah, when I went to the university, I had taken a couple of gen-ed's that transfered to the comm. college. The good thing about the comm. college though, is that there were only a fraction of the number of gen-ed's I would have taken at the university. I think while a comm. college takes more time than a tech. school, it is also cheaper than both a tech. school and a university. |
