Solve : Freeze after 5-10 minutes on almost every startup?

Answer»

Hello...

I've got a Dell Inspiron laptop w/Windows XP. About 90% of the time, no matter what is onscreen, the computer freezes after it's first started. The cursor still moves.

When I reboot, the problem does not reoccur.

I've run every check I can think of.

Is this a pure mechanical issue that would be fixed by replacing the hard drive?

Many thanks.

Peter1. Please, post some computer info:
- processor type, amount of RAM (hold Windows key, hit Pause/Break key)
- hard drive size/free space (open "My Computer", right click on hard drive letter, click "Properties")

2. Download, and INSTALL SpeedFan: http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php

Nothing suspicious there, unless Norton is playing with you.
Please, run those two tests from my previous reply.petemill, what did you do?
you said, you ran every check I can think of.

it would be nice to know.

did you try to go to run-Msconfig-startup tab and disable all.... restart the PC and see if you get the problem.

if not try to recreate the problem in msconfig but, this time just put a check mark on one box and restart the PC and so on until it happens again.

good luck!

Solve : Can't install Flashplayer?

Answer»

I am running XP Pro ( new build), with a new 360 GB HD. I tried to install ADOBE Flashplayer as a Firefox add-on, and when it begins installing, it gives me a message that I don't have enough HD space. My device manager/storage management, says that 95% of the HD is free. What is wrong? What's the full error message and where are you downloading the Flash Player? The message reads that I need to free up more space, and I'm downloading from Adobe's website.Try creating a new Firefox Profile.
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Creating_a_new_Firefox_profile_on_Windows

See if it works there. It doesn't work. I went directly to Adobe's webite three times, and downloaded the Flashplayer. It saves to my desktop, and when I click on it to install, it starts....then gives me an error that says I need to free up space for 5000k so it can install. You've tried creating a new Firefox profile?this actually sounds like a problem i had installing a game on the ps3. it sounds like there is an error with the flash player installer. try adding enough content to take up the same or roughly the same ammount of space that the FULLY installed player would take up.Quote from: Anderan on January 16, 2009, 08:57:07 AM

What?
Quote
My device manager/storage management, says that 95% of the HD is free.
i know it doesn't seem to make sense but it is what i did to solve the problem on my PS3.It does not work when I create a new profile in Firefox. The computer, when i go to disk management > storage devices...reads that 97% of the space on the HD is free. There should be about a thousand times more room than this flashplayer needs. There is an error somewhere in the adobe installer, or in how it is looking at my HD. Like I said, I have downloaded this application 3 times, and erased it everytime, before I tried it again. I just downloaded a video application for Firefox, and it worked perfectly, so its Adobe. Here right?
http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

When installing, can you make sure it's looking at the right drive (hard disk).

Exactly. I can't figure out a way to make sure what drive it is going to, I only have one HD.i know what i have said MAY not make a lot of sense but just hear me out. As i said i had a similar problem installing a game on my PS3. it was DUE to a programing error on the game disk that caused the game to incorrectly read my HDD and think that it was full (it wasn't). To fix it i had to trick the game by adding content that took up roughly the same amount of space that the game would take up. Some how this tricked the game into thinking that i had freed up space, when in fact i had added data. In the END it worked and all i'm saying is that you should give it a try for your problem.Hmmmm....I guess it's worth a shot.

I still am having no further issues as of now other than my pages load slowly, especially on eBay. Solve : Blue screen, unclean shutdown, mount command?

Answer»

My laptop will not start windows. It will not boot using safe mode or any of the other options.
I followed advice found in this forum to start and tap F8 and choose “disable automatic restarts...” This got the blue screen to stay still long enough to copy down the following message:

0x0000006B, (0xC0000102, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

Googling this hasn't yielded anything helpful yet. However I have booted from a live ubuntu cd. It gives this message:

$Logfile indicates unclean SHUTDOWN...Failed to mount 'dev/sdal'. OPERATION not supported. Mount is denied because NTFS is marked to be in use.

Choose 1 action:

1.If you have windows then disconnect the external devices by clicking on the 'safely remove hardware' icon then shutdown windows cleanly
2.If you don't have windows then you can use the 'force' option for your own responsibility. For example, type on the COMMAND line: mount -t ntfs-3g/dev/sdal/media/disk -o force
3.Add the option to the relevant row in the /etc/fstab file: /dev/sdal/media/disk ntfs-3g force 0 0[/i][/i]

This makes some sense to me and SEEMS like great information BUT

1.I don't have windows – won't boot with any option.
2.I cannot get a command line. I never had a Windows disk – just a key on the bottom of the computer. I DO have a student windows disk from which I got a command prompt but I got a message that the MOUNT command was not supported.
3.As ubuntu is just running from the cd ROM, I can't make changes to the /etc/fstab file – not that I would know the relevant row--

Can anyone please help? Is this MOUNT command out there somewhere? Is there a simple solution?

Here's my situation. My grandparents got me a HP Pavilion N5310 laptop back in 2001 for college. In between then and now the MONITOR has died, the cooling fan has died, and the CD drive wont read discs (though the computer says the drive is working). I have an external CD drive connected to the computer through the PCMCIA card port. I also have an external monitor (not a very good one) that I use. To keep the computer cool I use an oscillating fan. YES, I KNOW I NEED TO SPRING FOR A NEW COMPUTER...until then, I need to GET this one cleaned. And, of course, I've lost the factory CD that came with the unit (I'm sure it's somewhere in Florida...). The computer's floppy drive still works, as does the keyboard, and everything else, for the most part.
What I'm trying to do is to reinstall WindowsME (what the computer came with) from a WindowsME disk (which I have recently acquired). I have also downloaded the driver pack for the notebook from HP's website. I also have a backup of the DRIVERS currently on the computer.
My concern is that SINCE my CD drive is through the PCMCIA card port, after I wipe the hard drive I wont be able to access the CD drive, which will preclude any attempt to reinstall WindowsME (or much anything else). So that's my quandary. Any suggestions, recommendations, and insights will be most appreciated.PCMCIA Card CD ROM?
Thats a new one....

Or is a PCMCIA USB card?

You should buy a new computer : )
(You can get a CHEAP one that will still do more than your current one... you might consider looking)

But, since you have some reason for keeping this old one around...

Usually, you can call the company that sold your computer to you. They should have another restore disc around. The Windows ME disc, without extra software, should be available on eBay for relatively cheap.

If you can copy the CD ROM Drivers to a floppy, thats a start.
See if you can run any kind of bootable CD (A CD with an operating system installed on it). If the CD ROM can boot at startup, it uses generic enough drivers that you would be able to install Windows.
Seeing if your BIOS shows the CD ROM drive would do the same thing as well.

BTW: You dont have the fan oscillating, do you? You probably can just aim it at the general inside. Hey, at least it takes care of the computer dust : )

Solve : batch file to install drivers?

Answer»

My job requires me to image and deploy several different generations of Dell laptops and desktops (all lattitude and optiplex). All systems are XP Pro with SP3 installed. I have modified the answer file to work much better than it was but there are still some driver issues that I can't seem to work out. For example, the dell wireless drivers are installed when windows is starting for the first time but the actual application isn't intalled. This is because I followed the instructions from another source so I removed everything EXCEPT for the .inf and .cat files for all the hardware. What I WOULD like to do is GET rid of the sysprep driver installation and use a runonce COMMAND to really install all the drivers, i.e. wireless, AUDIO, video. How can I write a batch file to prompt the user to enter the model and then proceed to execute the install files (.exe)? Here is a copy of the code I have so far:

Solve : Spyware Removal - System now won't work?

Answer»

I'm a total novice with computers. I ran a free spyware detection through my interenet provider and it found around 100 spyware infections. I clicked "okay" to remove the spyware, and now the computer will not come back on. It cycles through the Intel blue screen and the Windows XP black screen over and over. The fans work, the lights come on, and it just keeps cycling through. Did I do something that is irreversible? The computer is my home office work computer with tons of valuable information for work on it. Please advise if there is anything I should try first. For now, I've just walked away from the office in despair. Thanks so much for any advice available. How about letting us know what programs you ran ? ?Laralicia - Welcome to the CH forums.

HI there. Thanks for your replies. I ran a Verizon Broadband Anti Spyware program that was offered for free through my homepage (probably my first MISTAKE) As I am a REMOTE office for my company, I do not have access to any discs at this time, and unfortunately, I don't have a back up system in place so nothing is backed up. Folder Access is a program to lock files right? You may be able to REINSTALL that program and get to them if you still have the product key. You might want to contact the Folder Access people and explain what happened.

Solve : HELP the computer works but I cant see anything?

Answer»

Yesterday, my computer started to MAKE weird loud noises (woke me up) so I got up, tapped on its side and got back to sleep. this morning I woke up, started my computer and it was making a regular noise that every computer makes and all the regular lights were on, (monitor, computer, etc.) but I couldnt SEE anything on the monitor.
I tryed RESTARTING, unplugging computer or monitor (when I restart the monitor a MESSAGE saying "no input signal" shows up but disappears after a second) but nothing I tryed works.
Could anybody help me please?

Thank you. It's very possible that noise was a fan dying...most likely the vid card fan or PSU fan.
Power down and remove a side panel...then power back up and INSPECT all fans with a flashlight.
If you do find a failed fan stop using the machine immediately as you risk burning up other expensive components...
As always when working inside the case remove all power sources and take anti-static precautions.

Solve : Dual Boot Windows 7 & XP With 2 HDDs?

Answer»

I plan to set up a partition on my main "C" HDD using GParted & install Windows 7 beta so I can dual boot Windows 7 & XP. I happen to have a 2nd "D" HDD on my computer. If I instead install Windows 7 on the 2nd "D" HDD, will I be able to then dual boot with XP on "C" and Windows 7 on "D", or is it necessary for all operating systems be on the same HDD in order to be presented with the dual boot option at bootup? With my luck I have found it best to install the Operating systems one at a time. That is only have one hardrive hooked up to the MOBO for each seperate OS. Then once each os is installed HOOK them all up and use the BIOS boot menu to choose what harddrive to boot from.

This way this OSes cannot mess with the MBR on the other drives and prevent boot of those drives

At this moment i am having trouble with having my xp drive set up as ntfs along with vista so you might WANT to try PAINING down to fat32 for your xp drive.

I have Windows 7 running inside a virtual machine and it seams to run quite a bit faster than vista. im waiting for another harddrive to come on so it can have its own hdd then i will try duel boot with it my selfYou will still have the option at boot time no matter which drive/partition you decide to use...they do not have to be on the same HDD.Quote from: patio on January 16, 2009, 06:08:06 AM

You will still have the option at boot time no matter which drive/partition you decide to use...they do not have to be on the same HDD.

agree BUT...

depends on how it is installed....

if installed with the wxp disk connected then boot/bootmgr will be written to the wxp disk and you'll get a choice to boot either wxp or W7....

if installed with the wxp disk disconnected, you'll need to select the W7 disk through the BIOS....

if you install on a partition on the wxp disk you'll get a choice as boot/bootmgr will be installed...

so it makes a differences...IMO

You could use a drive tray for that kind of thing. I have a tray that fits in the 5 inch bay and holds a standard 3.5 HDD. I can pull out the tray and shoe in another HDD. Saves wear and tear on the cables.

An alternative is in the BIOS. Some will let you swap which HDD is the boot.

As a precaution, avoid an install of the BETA while your regular system is in the machine wit no backup. It is a beta. It may wipe out the current system. Be advised that MS sometime back changed the way the MBR is defined. Further, MS says do not put the BETA on a system you use for anything other that lab testing.

But you knew that already!
I put this here for the benefit of others.

Solve : i have a question...!!!?

Answer»

I need to ask that what do we mean by the environment variables i the system.......and how do they affect the path definitions in the command prompt....An Environment Variable consists of information which is stored at a named location. To retrieve the information you simply have to call the name.

Here are examples of the Path and PATHEXT environment variables:
Quote

Path=c:\windows;c:\windows\system32;c:\bat
PATHEXT=.COM;.EXE;.BAT;.CMD;.VBS;.VBE;.JS;.JSE;.WSF;.WSH

When you enter an external command at the Command Prompt the locations in the Path Environment Variable are searched for whatever you entered. So if you wanted to RUN the External Command XCopy the folders in the Path environment variable, C:\WINDOWS, C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 and C:\BAT, will be searched for a file named XCopy with the extension of .COM, .EXE, .BAT, .CMD, etc.. from the PATHEXT environment variable.

This is very handy as it MEANS you do not need to know where the file is LOCATED as long as it is located in ONE of the folders mentioned in the Path environment variable.

If you enter XCopy and XCopy is not located in one of the folders mentioned in the Path environment variable the error message "'XCopy' is not recognised as an INTERNAL or external command, operable program or batch file" will be displayed.

To see all the global environment variables set in your pc enter SET at the command prompt.

Hope this helps.

Bcz I asked him how did he do it and he didn’t told me.

So I request you to PLS help me and give me a solution to know this idea of how did he do this.

Yahoo messenger has a "chat history" that you can look at. It's basically a file containing everything that was said in your conversation with your friend. Look through it to find the link that he gave you and post back to let us know. Most popular messenger software has a remote PC control option. I'm not familiar with YIM, so play around with it at bit. That's one HUGE security problem. I'd be getting that thing shut down ASAP.

If your computer is that vulnerable to invasion by others, you need to tighten up your PC's security at once.

Happy Holidays!

Solve : Epic Fail of an over-the-top installation, please help me?

Answer»

Ok, well

I received an old school laptop(Toshiba Satellite Pro 4300 series) from a technology giveaway during this summer, and after playing with it for a while, decided that I'd like to be able to go online with it. So, I went and bought a Linksys wireless G networking card. It said on the box that I needed to have Windows 98SE to run it. I had an old computer in my room that had a fried hard drive, and it CAME with a Windows 98SE disc. Lucky me. So I looked up how to do a over-the-top installation of the new operating system. It said to rename win.com to win.old, and so I did that. It didn't work, so I renamed win.ini to win.old. When I restarted my computer it came up with the message "EMM386 has DETECTED error #à9 in an application at memory address 08CC:02EC. To minimize the chance of data loss, EMM386 has halted your computer. For more information, consult your documentation. To restart your computer, press ENTER."

I don't have the documentation, because the school never included it with the computer. Is there anything that I can do to save the computer, and update it to Windows 98SE?

Why don't you boot from 98 CD, or a bootdisk (floppy), format the drive, and install fresh copy of 98?Are you sure the laptop sports a 32bit PCMCIA slot?

Why do you want to go online with Windows 98SE? It is nearly impossible to secure given that there are almost no more programs being written for it. That and Microsoft is no longer releasing updates for it.

You might want to obtain Windows 2000 instead. you should never ever rename com files because there files for ms dos to run a comand so that means if you rename com files dos wont work properly, i just want to warn not to rename com extentons unless you know what your doingQuote from: tylerisdabest on December 25, 2008, 11:58:48 PM

you should never ever rename com files because there files for ms dos to run a comand so that means if you rename com files dos wont work properly, i just want to warn not to rename com extentons unless you know what your doing

com files are programs without an EXE header.

renaming them just prevents them from running; loss of functionality is limited to thoes commands renamed. which begs the question-

What are the specs of the machine? Installed RAM, etc..

where were you told to rename win.com? This doesn't make any sense- I don't see what productive result could come of it. If the OS disk is a OEM install disk (needs a blank drive) then format the drive and boot from the CD.Actually this is the correct method for doing a Repair Install of Win98 and SE...
I used it successfully for Years.
It also retains all old settings and installed apps....

win.ini however should NOT have been touched for this procedure.Quote from: BC_Programmer on December 26, 2008, 04:13:05 AM
where were you told to rename win.com?

Oh, you youngsters! Ever hear of Google? This is absolutely standard practice if you want to do an over-the-top install of Win 9x family using a full install disk.

Quote
This doesn't make any sense

It makes plenty of sense. Win.com is one file that is always present in an existing Win 9x installation. The installer on the CD looks for it. If it finds it, an OEM disk tells you that you need an upgrade disk.

Quote
I don't see what productive result could come of it.

The productive result is that the installer doesn't find win.com, and assumes that it is OK to go ahead and copy the system files.

Since win.com is gone, it won't complain about being an upgrade and it will still use the existing registry and program files.

Quote
If the OS disk is a OEM install disk (needs a blank drive)

Win 9x OEM install disks don't need a "blank drive"; they merely need a FAT formatted volume without a copy of win.com.

An alternative to deleting or renaming win.com is to do this

Code: [Select]D:setup.exe /na3
where D:= your CD-ROM drive letter.

hi friends,

i have 512MB of RAM, I have disabled the paging file allocation in each drive consequently i often get an error when I run any new application while some others are already running:

there is not enough memory to run this application

I know the cause, but I want that there should no longer be use for paging file as i have enough RAM so that I could experience higher SPEED, if I am going right.

should I keep paging file allocated in each drives, (by the way which particular drive I should keep this in).
if not then how can i correct this error(described above) using RAM only?Page File doesn't use RAM, it uses VIRTUAL Memory (on your Hard Disk)

What is your current Virtual Memory set to?

Isn't the answer obvious. Clearly, you need to use one or more paging files. Solve : Lost my sound after computer re-install?

Answer»

I went back to your original post, and you said:
Quote

so I rebooted to my PC start-up point
What EXACTLY do you mean by that?I rebooted to the position the PC was when bought (I get pop-ups for Norton Anti-Virus 2003 when I sign on, which I haven't installed). Guess that wasn't such a great idea now, lol. BTW, i'm told I have no audio mixers when I tried to troubleshoot in "Volume Control".You restored the computer to its original state using what? Recovery CD, which came with the computer?lol I dont even recommend takin it to Geek Squad...I just rebooted it to it's original state using the F10 trick BRONI. Why shouldn't I take it somewhere AzNV ? Unless you just REFER to "Geek Squads" ? It may be less expensive to just BUY a sound card and install it vs. paying them to fix it.Maybe if I explain a few things about my system, it'll help, I have a Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition & my Audio Adapter is Intel 82801DB ICH4 - AC'97 Audio Controller [B-0]. Don't know if it`ll help much, but i'm trying to figure out what Audio Driver is most compatible with my system so I can get my missing sound back. Oh, my Motherboard Name: TriGem Glendale & Motherboard Chipset: Intel Brookdale-G i845GL. Quote from: patio on January 14, 2009, 05:07:22 PM

Solve : I'm infected with yt8a.exe, need help!?

Answer»

My dad recently got some kind of MALWARE on his computer. The main virus name is a hidden executable named yt8a.exe and it's located in C:\Windows\system32\yt8a.exe. I noticed it in his startup when i ran msconfig. I tried to google it and EVERYTIME i clicked ENTER it closed out firefox. I can't delete this file at all. I've restarted in safemode but it still tells me that another program is using it. I've tried searching through regedit for yt8a but nothing happens when I press search or f3. When I try searching from windows for yt8a it just closes my search query. I tried to install several different anti-virus programs(AVG, Avast, Pandasomething) but it gives me an error, "Something bad happened with the application." Even worse, after I went to folder options to show extensions on known file types, it changed my setting so that I can no longer view hidden files or folders. Everytime I click the option and click apply or OK nothing happens and when I open up the Folder Options window it's reverted back to hide hidden files. I've even tried going through the registry HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\EXPLORER\ADVANCED\HIDDEN(this is off the top of my head) and changed the value manually to 1 but then when I close regedit and open it up again it's changed back. It get's worse, so much worse. Last week after charging my mp3 player on his computer I realized a lot of my music had been corrupted on my mp3 player. This was before I knew he had a virus/malware, and later I was charging it on my new computer(built it about 2 months ago). So while I was trying to fix this yt8a problem, I plugged in my mp3 player on my laptop, it asked me what I wanted to do, run yt8a.exe, open folder to view files, etc... That's when I realized that my mp3 player was infected. I tried plugging in a removable usb drive on my dad's infected computer and it immediately made a copy of the yt8a.exe and also a nifty Auto.inf that I assume tries to make it run automatically. Luckily I was able to delete it off my flash drive. Not so much for my dad's computer. He has his HD partitioned into 2 seperate partitions, C: and D: and now they both have a copy of the yt8a.exe and auto.inf(C:/yt8a.exe). These I can delete but they immediately come back like magic. Even after shift deleting nothing helps. Anyways I told my dad he should reformat because at this point I kind of gave up. When I got back home I was antsy because I knew i had charged and put music on my computer from my mp3 player recently and I was really hoping that I hadn't gotten infected. I lost Now I have the virus and I'm kind of pissed. This computers pretty new and I haven't installed anything suspicious. I keep my computer clean and I'm VERY VERY VERY cautious about what I install(pretty much bare essentials, vlc, firefox, foobar, etc) and I surf the web pretty safely(Noscript destroys most java attacks and such) so I'm pretty pissed that somehow I end up with this.

Anyways, sorry that was such a long explanation. I ran through the guidelines for your malware thing and I have two of the logs included for MBAM and SUPERAntiSpyware. It won't let me install hijack this however, even if I change the name to sniper.exe or I tried asdasdasd.exe. Nothing happens when I double click the file. I'm at a loss guys, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE tell me you can help me because I am stumped. I already had to reformat once(I've had this computer 2 months) because my nephew downloaded some virus two days after I installed windows. I don't really mind reformatting but I've made so many configurations and tweeks that I don't want to have to redo everything...AGAIN. PLEASE tell me someone can help me.

[attachment deleted by admin]The problem with that is that even when I am in safe mode I am still under attack! So even if i made a system restore checkpoint then it's still gonna load up with the virus on.Roosterfor - Welcome to the CH forums.

Solve : keyboard shortcut to the command line?

Answer»

Any body knows a keyboard shortcut to OPEN the COMMAND line from the standard Windows XP GUI?

Thanks in advance.there isn't a one STROKE TYPE of shortcut; but you can do it with the keyboard fairly quickly.

Windows key+r
type cmd
enter

Cyberbuzzard - Welcome to the CH forums.

You can create shortcut keys by first creating a desktop shortcut to CMD.exe then R.Click on the shortcut, select Properties and complete the necessary boxes.

My R.click_shortcut/properties/shortcut is attached. If you select the Options tab you can also open Cmd in full screen mode.

Note that the Target shown is incomplete and in full is:
%comspec% /t:1f/e:on/v:on/k cls prompt $e$p$g

You will want to tailor this to suit your needs. Having a shortcut on the desktop means that I very seldom use the hotkeys to Cmd.

Good luck

p.s. for the purists - I make no excuses for using the MS-Dos logo

Edit: To change the Target to include %comspec%

Solve : Script file?

Answer»

I have a script that runs as per the schedule task on a hourly basis. the sript doesnt run and there is no way to get an alert at the event of failure to run the script. I want to recieve an alert whenever the script file fails to execute. I have an idea to get a log file whenever the script file executes. I will create another batch file that checks for the log file and I believe there can be a way to do this. If the log file is created with the date variable and the new batch file that i plan to create to check the execution of batch file will also check for the date variable file so that i can know that the log file was created for that particular date or infact no need to do by date but once the CONDITION is met we can add a command to delete the log file.

so the new batch file should see for the log file and if meets the condition then it skips the net send command and goes to command to delete the log file and if the condition fails it goes to net send or any otehr way to send an alert and sends an alert.

I have explained the whole thing in a not so techincal way. but some one with the knowledge of scripting can understand the problem adn help me.There might be a couple of things you can do:

Open Scheduled Tasks
On the Advanced menu, select Notify Me of Missed Tasks

Personally, I only seem to get a popup about missed tasks after a boot. This might not be timely enough for you.

You may be in luck. The SCHEDULER keeps a log (SchedLgU.Txt) in your Windows directory that contains task NAMES, start and end TIMES, and the result. A simple script should be able to process this file and determine the success/failure of your scheduled task.

Good luck. There is no OPTION in advanced to notify in case of task failed. However the log file that u suggest will try to explore that but now i need to get a quick one

Solve : XP/Ubuntu on the same hdd?

Answer»

Hey,

Alright, so i installed XP as you normally would, and then i installed Ubuntu and used the first option creating two partitions on the same hard drive.

I realize this isn't the way guides LAY out how to do it, but i didn't THINK to look at anything before i tried it.

So, now I'm ABLE to start up Ubuntu just fine, but when i choose the option of XP it just stays on the STARTING up screen forever. Not the windows starting up screen, but the dual boot menu start up screen.

It still has all the files on the XP partition, i can see them through Ubuntu, but it just won't start up in XP.

I can just redo it the right way, but in order to know how big I was going to have to make the two partitions i loaded all of my programs and files onto XP before hand, and now it would just be a pain to do it all again.

Is there an easy way out of this, or am I going to have to reinstall them both?

Solve : Erased hard drive noe not reading driver?

Answer»

I just finished erasing my hard drive from REFERENCE number CH000186. Now when I try starting the computer it has a message "not READY reading driver E Abort retry fail?". I haven't tried doing any of this type of thing before and I'm at a loss. My son tried installing XP over ME on our old basement computer and I don't know if it is trashed or what. I've tried rebooting with start up disks and MANY other things with no luck. I thought maybe if I erased the hard drive it would work. Am I just wasting my time or is there a solution? Thanks! You have to install operating system on erased hard drive. Right now, the hard drive is empty.
You need to boot from Windows CD, and follow on-screen instructions.Thank you for your reply. I think I finally GOT the CD to install it has 27 more minutes to go. Been busy and today was the first time I had time to try it. HOPE it works so I don't have to buy a new one. Works not that great right now!
Thanks again!Keep us posted...

Solve : Computer running slowly?

Answer»

My computer suddenly started running very slowly YESTERDAY, so I decided to restart it, but that didn’t help. It’s been going so slow that EVEN normal sounds like the Windows start up sound are skipping when they play, and my mouse has been jumping all over the PLACE when I try to use it. I’ve since tried restarting the computer multiple times, I’ve scanned my computer for viruses and spyware (with AVG) and it came up clean, and I defragmented it, but still no luck. Also, all my programs have been using their normal amount of SYSTEM memory, but for some REASON their CPU usage has been through the roof. It’s not just one program, any one of them are using up to 100% of the CPU when you try to use them. So what might be going on?1. Please, post some computer info:
- processor type, amount of RAM (hold Windows key, hit Pause/Break key)
- hard drive size/free space (open "My Computer", right click on hard drive letter, click "Properties")

Solve : Several Windows XP components do not work.?

Answer»

I have a Dell Windows XP computer. Somehow I think the computer was infected. Internet Explorer, System restore, Help and Search are not working properly. They open but the screens are blank. I installed Firefox and it WORKS perfectly no problems. I have already ran all spyware, virus, malware softwares, and I have cleaned the computer over and over. When I run the software, it COMES out clean. I am using Webroot. I have used CCleaner, Anti-Spyware, Spybot, Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. I am using Zone Alarm Firewall. I have uninstalled I.E. and Adobe. I have reset I.E. and still NOTHING. They are not working. I am sure that the computer is secured, but what could be causing this problem. Thank you. I've been working on this problem now for THREE weeks. I need help. Is there anyway to repairs windows without going back to the original CD, since that CD goes back to 2002.Go to Start/Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter...
Have your XP CD handy.
Let it run to completion and re-boot...I did the steps sfc /scannow and rebooted. Did not work.Repair install, maybe: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htmI decided to do the repair installation, which I wanted it to be my last resort, but I couldn't figure out what was wrong. The repair installation did work, it just takes so long to update everything. There should be a better way to repair windows. I've never tried the registry cleaners, do they work? Not for Windows OS issues....no.

Yes it takes time to re-do the updates and it's a pain...but i'd be thankful Windows and all my data were back if i were you...

Solve : how much gb is xp pro with sp3?

Answer»

Silly question.
I have updated my xp pro with the sp3 update.
How much of my memory should this take up.
When I first installed windows it was about 1.5 gb (approx) now it appears to be using 3.5 gb (approx)
Is that RIGHT it seems a huge JUMP.
(all the FIGURES are approx)

Do I need to delete something? from the updates.

thankyou

You have memory and storage SPACE mixed up...memory = RAM...
Storage space is how much space is taken up or available on your hard drive.
It would be silly to install a SERVICE Pack and then start removing components from it.
Give more info on your machine and what size HDD you have and maybe we can advise on freeing up some space.
Of course adding a larger drive is the most economical/easiest solution...Windows XP Pro With service Pack 3 Will Normally run on 512mb

Solve : need to backup data and programs?

Answer»

helpppppppppppp

My computer is acting weird of late. What I want to do is backup the data and the programs, and reinstall the operating systems and then load the data back. I am running win XP.

If I clone the HD then I run the RISK of copying the malware as WELL correct, so I guess that wont work. I just want to back up the data and programs. How do I do that?If you suspect you are infected but are going to do a CLEAN install anyways i would use an image program and burn the image to CD/DVD
Then after the clean install just remember whenever you use files from the image scan them first for malware.
I use Acronis True Image but there are others.

The other option is to TRY and clean the system first before creating a backup...for that VISIT our Virus and Spyware section and follow the instructions in the first link at the top of the page.
