Solve : Help, system recovery doesn't work.?

Answer»

Here's the story.

I own 2 Emachines PCs. I bought another used Emachines system for my son. When it arrived, it worked fine, but the OS was all in French. I tried changing the language settings, but that did absolutely nothing. So, I decided to TRY using my recovery disk that I use for my other 2 systems. I do a full system recovery, but it's STILL in French. So, I figure I'll put the HD in my own PC, and reformat it. All goes according to plan, the drive formats normally, and then I put it back in the other system, and try to restore again. It seemed to WORK fine, and was actually IN ENGLISH!!, YET after the recovery finished, and the system rebooted, it won't start up. It tells me that the file SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\NTFS.SYS is missing. I put the drive back in my other PC, and had a look in the drive, and sure enough, that file is missing.

What would me next move be? I'm completely lost. If the restore CD isn't putting that file on the disk, why not?

Here's the details of the PC
Pentium 4
2 gig
512 meg RAM
160 gig HD
Windows XP

eMachines change MBoards and important components as quickly as i change socks...It's possible the restore CD you used is for completely different components...
Did either machine come with a Driver CD ? ?
If so have you attempted re-installing the drivers ? ?I guess I didn't mention this, but even when put in my own PC as the master, it still won't work.

I'm wondering if it may have something to do with the partition system. The HD is supposed to have a section for restore that is FAT32, and the main storage area is supposed to be NTFS. This drive now only has the NTFS section. XP after installed cannot simply be switched from one machine to another...
It will not boot properly ...if at all.
This is by design.
Collect all your CD's for both machines and post back with some more details...Quote from: patio on January 22, 2009, 08:09:44 PM

Well, that's not really the issue. Even if I do the recovery with the drive in my machine, it still won't work. There is nothing wrong with the drive either.

I formatted the hard drive, did the recovery (tried it twice with both recovery DISKS) in the new machine, but it still didn't work.

Anyhow. I don't have the recovery disk for the new machine.

Solve : Trying to reformat from XP disk, instant error?

Answer»

Hello. I want to reformat my PC because I am giving it to my mother plus it is getting old (maybe 5yrs) and running slow. I set BIOS to boot from disk first but as soon as I see something that says something like "windows setup" I get this MESSAGE...."file\i386\ntkrnlmp.exe could not be loaded. error code is 1024". I have also recently not been able to pull up a DOS prompt from run, cmd.
"C:WINDOWS\system32\command.com
C:WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS_DOS & Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application"

I run CA Internet security suite (cablevision) but as I was typing this I got a popup saying that like 54 threats were removed & 157,839 attempts to connect to my COMPUTER were blocked. I have a wired NETWORK setup in my home including 2 PCs & an Xbox.

Any ideas what is going on here?

Are you talking about two computers, or one?1 PCAnd is this an XP CD or a sharpie version ? ?Original XP disk that came with the PC.You should be able to simply boot to the XP CD and start the installation...there is a selection to remove and re-create a new partition...this will erase all data on the drive.As soon as the disk begins to boot I get that error message. I can't get anywhere (where set to boot from cd-rom 1st) before I get that message.Have you tried cleaning the CD?
Do you have another bootable disk you can try, just to rule out the drive as the culprit?Well I only have 1 cd-rom drive but I have tried 2 different XP disks with the same results.http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318729 points to INCORRECT BIOS settings, or bad RAM.

Solve : My computer screen won't turn on!?

Answer»

Here's the deal:
My mom gave me her old computer when it was about 2 years old. it was working fine EXCEPT that sometime the screen wouldn't come on when you started up the computer. the lights and fan would start running and then the fan would turn off and the computer screen would stay black. well usually you could just wait a few minutes and it would start on it's own, now it won't turn on at all! the start light around the start button will come on and then fan will start like normal but before the screen will come on the fan will turn off and the screen will stay completely black but the start light will still be on. i have left it on for an entire day and still nothing. i really can't wipe the whole computer out because i have important information on it. i desperately need help. I am not good with fixing things and need to get my computer running before finals. i can get additional info if needed.

any help would be amazing. Thanks.
I am wedded to the idea that your power supply is on the bonkers . There
seems to be insufficient power to the motherboard hence not enough to
drive the display card. The lack of proper voltages result in the CPU resetting
itself to off- mode hence stopping the fan and power supply.

Much about the PC is diagnosis - sometimes right sometimes wrong - and
swapping hardware that you know is good. Just borrow a good power supply
and see what happens.

While you're at it , take a peek at the capacitors on the motherboard...see if all
the tops are FLAT...bulges will spell a headache !Thanx. but how do i "borrow a good power supply? have you tried turning the monitor on?Is this a laptop?
Can you give us some more info about the computer? Like the brand and model.sorry about that. yes it is a laptop. it is a Toshiba Satellite M35x-S329.

Thanks.Does anyone know anything?? I'm just another reader but I've been WRESTLING with laptop issues for years. There are a few things you might check to shed some light on your dilemma, or at least eliminate some possibilities and give the experts some more information...

1. When you switch the laptop ON, does the CHARGE indicator come on? Does the CHARGE indicator extinguish when you remove the power cord?

2. Does the screen ever "glow" at the BORDERS, as if a black sheet is covering up the desktop and light is slipping through on the sides?

3. Does the keyboard have a FUNCTION KEY, such as one labled with "fn" near the lower left-hand corner near the "ctrl" key? (I'm guessing at the location.)

4. Are the F-keys (f3, f4, f5, etc) labled with extra functions?

5. Is the battery in place? If so, is the battery a Lithium-Ion or a Ni-Cad type?

6. When you switch the laptop ON, can you hear the CD-ROM drive "cycle"? Is there a CD in that drive?

One of the tricks my laptop's "support" group told me to do to RESET the thing... was to switch OFF and remove power, remove the battery, hold the power button on for 10 seconds, then reconnect everything and power-ON again. Don't know if that applies to the Toshiba or not but it's worth a try.

Thanx.
Ill give it a try.

Solve : Outlook Express locks up when I click on url in email?

Answer»

I am running OE 6 under Windows media center 2005 (XP). Links in all emails have started lcoking up OE forcing a reboot. How can this be corrected? TIA for any assistance.Get rid of the dbx files, Close windows not needed, buy more ram, increase the free space on the HD., empty all temp files, scan for a virus, run MALWAREBYTES, Clean your register, Get all the XP updates.

To compact and back up e-mail folders
1.Select an e-mail folder.
2.On the File menu, point to Folder, and then CLICK Compact.
3.To back up the folder, find the folder file, and then copy it to a backup folder, floppy disk, or network drive. Outlook EXPRESS e-mail folders have a .dbx extension (for example, "SENT Items.dbx").
Notes
•Some message files might be too large to back up onto a floppy disk.
•If you are using a program other than Outlook Express to send e-mail messages to newsgroups, check your e-mail program's documentation for information about compacting and deleting e-mail folders.

After you back up the dbx file, delete the dbx files from the HD.
Quote from: billrich on December 27, 2008, 07:00:26 PM

Get rid of the dbx files,
Hold on, here. You just told him to delete his email messages. That's what would happen if he deletes the .dbx files.

GSXITH3, what is your default browser? Do you have other browsers installed?

Try compacting your OE messages and SEE whether that resolves the problem. To Compact, go to Tools, Options, Maintenance, and click the Clean Up Now button. Then, click Compact and let OE complete the procedure.

I'm almost tempted to simply say something rude here, but I won't.

I believe the OP is now having problems playing any file; and thus wants somebody else to make sure it isn't the file that is broken, or something.

the problem is codecs are missing. either reinstall WMP or install codecs.Quote

BC, go ahead and say what you think.
If I am wrong, it is I, not you that is being rude.
The site he gave is by subscriptions. It is up to the user to save the files in a format that does not require a key.If that is allowed. He should have unlocked all the files before he re-formatted his machine.
If this is really a problem with the OS he can do this:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421
Which is about taking ownership of a files and folders by the System Administrator in Windows XP.

Otherwise, he should go to the site and make sure his subscription is up to date and he has the keys installed on his machine.he already has the MP3 file, I believe he uploaded it so that we could "examine it" for problems.

Which wouldn't really help, since the files are likely intact anyway.

You could be completely wrong; but that wouldn't justify a rude response. Besides, I like to air on the side of caution myself, in case it is later proved that I am an idiot later on in the thread, which has happened at least once.

And if it requires a subscription to download, they were wasting their time (and ours).

let's start over here though.

What kind of files? we still don't know what format they are.

Do you have an audio device installed?He should just move all the offending files into a seperate directory...burn them to CD just in case they're valuable and then convert them from FAT32 to NTFS...

Solve : Custom XP Install Disc?

Answer»

Hey

So as i was reinstalling windows today i was trying to find a way to make it easier and make a custom XP Install disc.

I've found nLite and that's PRETTY good, but i wanted to take it a STEP further. On my current XP disc that's a copy from a friend (and the only one i've EVER used) it automatically installs programs like trillian, nero, O & O degfrag, firefox, ect. if i want it to. This is probably standard right? I don't actually KNOW.
Either way, I was wondering if there was any way to add other programs of my own choice to this so that i could have it automatically install iTunes or Ad-aware or whatever!

Does anyone know how to do this, or if it's actually possible? Perhaps there's even another method to do this that i'm just not thinking about?

Thanks in advanceoh joy, another nlite customized install. AFAIK you will need to fiddle with nlite.inf.I know your idea is possible. before i had an installer of that kind.
I just don't know how they made it You can use Nlite to add programs, check on their SITE and forums.
You'll need a genuine XP disk though to use it.

Solve : I can't log onto my computer?

Answer»

Okay, so I tried to LOG onto my computer using the welcome screen and everything appears normal, except that it logs me off right away. My background sometimes appears for a second and then it kicks me back to the log on screen. After this was happening, after I got into the regedit.exe registry, I accidentally changed the userinit registry from C:\windows\system\32... blah blah blah to X:\... Basically I just changed the C to a X because I was reading someone's answer to this problem and that's what they said to do. Now I can't even log on in safe mode or anything! I can't log onto my computer in any way. I read something about using a different computer to connect to the same network. All I know is that the computer this is happening on is a laptop, but at my house we have wireless internet, so I don't know if we're on the same network or not. I don't really want to have a redo everything on my computer because there's some stuff I need on there. I"m almost positive I don't have a recovery CD or anything, and if I do, I probably won't be able to find it. Does anyone know what to do without having to re-install windows? Until then, I'll search the internet for answers. What I do know is that A) The registry didn't get deleted, I just stupidly changed the thing. B) I can't use my laptop in any way and need HELP! Registry Repair in XP

You are going to have to track down an XP CD to facilitate these repairs. The version and Service Packs have to match what you have installed...i.e. XP PRO=XP Pro
XP Pro with SP2=XP Pro with SP2.

Needless to say without having a CD and no BACKUPS in place the Registry is the last place you should have been mucking around in...What kind of XP CD do I need to get? A system recovery CD or what? Is there a way by using a CD to get it back to normal without having to re-install XP so I don't lose my data? If not, I'll just do what I have to do. Thanks for any help. Quote

So what is the XP CD called? What am I looking for? Is it called "system recovery cd" or something like that. I'm not exactly sure what you mean by the "XP CD". What would be ideal would be to use this "CD" to get things back to normal without losing my stuff, but if I can't do that, that's okay too, I guess. Recovery CD will return your computer to its original state - all data, and installed programs will be lost.

Let's say, you have Windows XP Home with Service Pack 2 currently installed on your computer.
You'll need a CD, which SAYS Windows XP Home with Service Pack 2, or you can get Windows XP Home CD, and you'll have to create new CD, where you'll slipstream SP2.
Wndows XP CD looks like this:
Haha okay thanks. I feel dumb now cuz of the huge picture. So with this CD, will I be able to still get everything back that I had or will it also erase everything? I know I'm asking a lot of questions here, but I just want to know.Better ask, than be sorry.
With that CD, you can try to repair Windows: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm
There is no guarantee, it'll solve your problem, but your data will be safe.Thank you so much Broni for all the help. I'll try to do the repair shortly, and don't worry I'm sure I'll let you know if I have any problems. Cool

I use a simple xcopy batch file to do backup. As part of that batch file, I also force a DELETE of "recent", "cookies", and within local settings: "history", "temporary internet files".

The LAST one is not working correctly. The syntax is proper (including using the " " around the long path). The issue seems to be with some (heck, a TON) of hidden folders and files. While the visible files are perhaps 20-30, with an aggregate memory size of around 20-30k, a check of "properties" reveals 1100 files and 24 folders with an aggregate memory usage of 25mb. Of course, my folder settings allow viewing of both hidden/read-only and system files, but these don't seem to exist anywhere.

I have not (yet) set flags on xcopy to delete subfolders on "temporary internet files" as I am not sure what is hiding down there and don't wish to risk rendering the OS inoperable by forcing a deletion of critical files. Actually, I'm not EVEN sure setting the /S flag on xcopy would change the lack of results, but not up to trying it yet. btw, the RESULT is that the batch file actually "skips" the instruction, not even returning an error message. Weird, huh? I MOVED the instruction line up and down in the queue and the result is the same: the batch file treats it as if it doesn't exist. I tried copying a line which does execute properly and then simply changing the final folder name. No change. I am taking XP at its word regarding the path and the folder name of "documents and settings\gerry\local settings\Temporary Internet Files"

Any ideas as to what is really lurking deep inside that seemingly innocuous folder?

thanks,

Gerry

Solve : Green screen help?

Answer»

I am having a problem with my computer that maybe you could help me fix. I have looked thru your web forum but did not see any thing like my problem It started 3 years ago and Dell fixed it after being on the phone with them for several hours. It came back almost a year to date. I SENT them an E mail with the job number and the next day the problem was gone. Well 10 months latter it is back. Dell will not re fix the problem because it is out of warranty. Here is my problem. When you first start the computer you get a green screen that is always Blue then when it goes to the Blue screen there is a big ball like a sun swirling around in the upper left corner that is not their when the system is operating properly. After all the start up things happen the screen is grainy and gritty and fuzzy and things are like all moving like a swarm of Bees in the back ground. If you open any thing with a picture it is worse and has a moving green moss on every thing. Here is what I have done to solve this problem thus far.
My ant virus soft wear is in good current standings(PC Cillen veson 14) and have run a current update. I have run the current Dell windows update as well. Originally they hade me swap out the monitor and I had the same thing on another monitor so I think that is not the problem. I have played with the color and the resolution is set at 1280x1024 and changing it had no effect on it. So my untrained thinking is a driver is resetting it self or some thing. The computer works in every way as it always did and is not running slow or any thing.
Do you think you could walk me thru this repair? I am not that much of a teck person but maybe be able to work thru this with your help.
E mail me your number and I can call you when it is convenient to you.

Respectfully,

John Deere 36Welcome to the CH forums.

So far all I've gotten out of your post is that you are running Win XP on a Dell with PcCillin as your antivirus and seem to be having video PROBLEMS.

Solve : Need to reload WinXp?

Answer»

Im trying to reload WinXP from scratch. What happens is that after the initial files ar ecopied, and I press F8 to agree to the EULA, I choose install Windows . The next screen where it says install on current partition, delete partiton... says in the box underneath "There is no disk in the drive". I know there is a Hard disk in the computer. And then it hangs or gives me an error saying there was an illegal operation.

I have the boot sequence to boot from the disk drive.

whats going wrong
You need to give a little bit more information. Is this a desktop?
Did it have XP on whne you got it?
Or did you do it and you forgot how?
You say 'reload' and the can mean something other that 'install',
so we need to know what you mean.

What kind of XP CD do you have?
If it is not a legal CD, we can not help you here.

The message about no disk drive means that either the drive is not setup in the BIOS or the drive does not conform to a known type XP can recognize. XP does not recognize SATA drives UNLESS a driver was loaded from the floppy during the initial load of drivers. You see a message that says press f6 and if you miss, you have to start over.Its a desktop. When I* bought it, it had XP preinstalled. But over time I think I got some viruses. Now Im seeing a lot of pop ups and stuff and some of my programs cause the computer to crash. You know all that fun stuff. So I want to just re-install XP from scratch.

I tried to do the system restore and EVEN do the dell restore from the other partition but this causes the computer to hang and freeze each time.
Anyway I bought a copy of XP, and put it in the CD drive, changed the BIOS to boot from the disk, and it seems to be OKAY until I get to the screen I mentioned above. THATS when its says there is no disk in the drive and the only option I can choose is D to delete the partition, which causes a crash again.

Funny thing is when I let it boot itself with the existing XP that is alreadyh on there, it boots up to the desktop properly. Its just that it starts giving popups soon after and then crashes if I run programs

What me do

Your machine was loaded with XP at the factory. If your XP was still in good condition it would be posible to make an install CD from the original system. But is may be too late for that now. The XP you bought may not have all the drivers needed to install to the hard drive.
I have a used computer like that and I have to figure out a way to re-install windows XP from the disk provided by the manufacture. In some cases you have to have two disks, one with XP and the other has the ADDITIONAL drivers needed to install XP. This is a big annoyance for sure. The manufacture of your desktop should have information specific your model. And in some cases even the serial number. They change specs on a system and not change the model number. It can drive you crazy.
What make and model is it? Does it have a service ID on it? That is needed to see if the machine requires special chip drivers for the motherboard. Sometimes XP can not install without having all the drivers right from the start of the instantiation. This is a known issue, but not very common. The box I am using at this moment has a standard Windows 2000 install that later I was able to update with the right drivers. But no way can I install XP on it!
Hard to believe, but true! When the setup is starting you press F6 and indicate where the right drivers are.

Solve : IE Toolbars Keep Changing?

Answer»

Hi Everyone,

When I am using the computer for a long period time, the IE toolbar icons change around. I have it set up for 2 rows of icons but then it will change to 4. I do have the option to Lock Toolbars CHECKED. ALSO-after this happens, if I go to open one of my OE emails, it says- not enough memory to open this- and I have to reboot.

I also went into the C drive properties-Total Size 74.4 GB Free Space 63.8 GB-does this seem right?

Any help would be so much appreciated!

XP SP2 Home
IE6
Why havent you upgraded to Internet Explorer 7? IE6 is a security risk that can talk if a hacker wanted it to.
(Yes, using my scary "convert now!" words!)

Be sure to disable any toolbars you dont use. Check the toolbar menu for toolbars that are listed that you do not actually see running in IE, these can often be adware which can cause your toolbars to jump around at times....

Also, do you happen to change your monitor resolution, or use two monitors at once? This can also affect the layout. I think it's about that time for IE7!! I still do not have Sp2 either. With this problem I am having-do you think it's a GOOD idea to install either-until this is fixed? I will get RID of some of my toolbars, as well. I have not changed any resolutions.

Thanks much for your help!I would recommend installing IE7, and SP2 at the very least.
(Service Pack 3 is out, however, if you have an HP or Compaq computer, I would not recommend installing it...)

If you have a dial up internet connection, either of these updates will be pretty much impossible.

We can GIVE you links so you can download the programs at, say, a public library or a friends house that has high speed internet.
I have cable internet. Thank you!

Solve : Boot Drive 1 Win 2K - How??

Answer»

How do you get Windows 2000 to boot from the second drive?
I though I read here that it can not be DONE. Here is a picture.

What is wrong with this picture?What does your boot.ini FILE show as the default windows system?

OK. Here is a new picture. I have goone back and forth USING the BIOS, but not changing the BOOT.INI file. Look at this new image.

As yuu cam see. when I run CMD it brings up the E: drive! And the disk manager shows E: as the system on drive 1 and not drive 0 here.
Well, anyway it works. I am going to pull the drive out and go back to one drive. Fun, but it is so confusing!Quote

And the disk manager shows E: as the system on drive 1 and not drive 0 here.

Nothing abnormal about that, the OS can be loaded from any hard disk/partition. In your boot.ini change RDISK(0) to RDISK(1) and reboot, should work.

Your "problem" possibly caused by the drives (pata) not being correctly jumpered as Master/Slave.

WHAT SHOULD I DO NOW??? I have Win XP.

Files that are opened by programs can not always be fragmented, since, well, heres a metaphor:

When your reading a book, and someone keeps moving the book to the other side of the table, what happens?
You have to get up, and move to the other side of the table.
If your a program that is reading it, your not going to let go of that book until you are DONE.

Does that make sense?
If you really want to defragment more, TRY one of the following:
Restart in Safemode, then defragment (I recommend this)
Close as many programs as possible (though, some just cant be closed)
Ignore it, really, its not the biggest deal on earth, you got the program and system files defragmented, thats the really important stuff.

Thanks for your reply.

Well I have tried this in safe mode, but it is showing the same message there also.

Should i not worry about this (since it is showing total MFT fragements
as 2)?

Mass fragmentation causes system performance decrease.
Just a few files not fragmented will not cause a problem. I Would not worry about it.
I do find it odd that .mpg files are not being defragmented...

Do you have Antivirus installed? You might just run a scan, just to be sure.

Solve : mpeg 2 decoder?

Answer»

can someone please help me, i just tried to watch a film i got for Christmas on my computer and the sounds not working properly. I'm getting the background music and sounds but not the dialogue and I'm unsure how to fix it. I tried another DVD so i know it's not just a broken disk. It wont play at all through windows media player so i clicked the web help button and it told me to download a mpeg 2 decoder but i don't think it's fixed the problem as it still wont work in windows media player and I'm having to run it through a completely different media player that's on my computer. Can anyone please help me?DLoad and try VLC Player (FREE )...THANK you for the advice, i tried VLC player just now and the same thing is happening. is there anything else i could try?Is it store bought DVD?yes i got it for christmas so i dont know which shop they're from but they are aren't copys or dvds someone else has made. i've never had this problem before its only recently and the only change to my computer was reinstalling windows a few months ago and i've not tried a dvd since so could it be something that needs reinstalling? i dont know MUCH about computers and its all i can think of but i'd have thought it would have INSTALLED itself through updates or something?If VLC Player doesn't want to play it, I suspect bad DVD.
The only way to find out is to try it on another computer.i only have access to this computer for now but i'll try that when i can. my only CONCERN with that is dvds i've had for a while and used to work on my computer aren't anymore so i didn't think it's the new dvd thats broken.Ive tried the disk on another computer and on a DVD player and it worked fine on both of them. does anyone know how to fix it?Sounds like you need a new player...
Dual-layer DVD players start at about 40 bucks shipped from newegg if you are in the States...oike dokie, i'm in england so it's probably going to be more but never mind. is there anything in particular i should look out for when buying a new one or anything i should take note to match up to my computer or are they pretty universal, my computers a dell?Quote from: rachael on December 28, 2008, 01:03:15 PM

my computers a dell?

This is analogous to saying "My car is a Ford"...

but- there really isn't anything you'll need to look for, most DVD drives are IDE. If you can find out the model number of your Dell, I'm sure we could determine wether you'll need a newer SATA-type drive or not.it's quite old but i have an owners manual for it and it says dell dimension 8400 series then at the bottom it says model DHM. i've got two dvd drives in it will they both need replacing?Quote from: rachael on December 28, 2008, 01:17:55 PM
it's quite old but i have an owners manual for it and it says dell dimension 8400 series then at the bottom it says model DHM. i've got two dvd drives in it will they both need replacing?

have you tried both DVD drives for playing the DVDs?yeh so they'll both want replcing wont they cos neither of them play it properly?Try to uninstall both drives through Device Manager.
Restart computer. They'll be automatically reinstalled.
If the above doesn't help...
Try one of these:
1. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
or...
2. Download, and run Restore Missing CD Drive patch
Double click on cdgone.zip to unzip it.
Right click on cdgone.reg, click Merge.
Accept REGISTRY merge.
or...
3. Go to Device Manager, click a "+" sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
You'll see two items:
- ATA Channel0 (or Primary Channel)
- ATA Channel1 (or Secondary Channel)
Right click on each of them, and click Uninstall. Confirm.
Restart Windows. They'll be automatically reinstalled.

Still nothing? Both drives are dead.

Solve : XP shows all drives as empty !!!?

Answer»

Hi guys, I've just joined while searching the net for some help and found this forum.

I followed a Windows Update prompt over xmas to update my XP OS machine. A day or two LATER all my harddrives except C are now showing as empty...!!!

I'm not sure if it was service pack 3 that was downloaded by that particular update but I found it was at some stage in the recent past. I websearched and learned SP3 caused a lot of people problems so unistalled it. But still no joy.

The system will not recognise any files that I know are on any of my floppy DISKS, or USB sticks. My D & E drives are all shown - but all read as "not formatted" & 100% unused, even though a day ago they contained all my documents. Even my CDrom drive shows but won't read any disk.

Has anyone else had a similar problem...? Can anyone help with this... I would be very very grateful if you can...

Ps:I had all my documents stored on the D & E drives as a measure to SAVE them from the occasional Windows C drive crash.... it worked until today...

Pps: I checked my system history and the only point of interest I can see is that around the date I did the windows "security update" it shows that for drives D & E the "property free space", "property filesystem", and "property SIZE" were all changed to value " "... which I guess means to zero. Looking back through the history file this has never occured before. My guess is that this is some clue to what has happened...

Solve : My d drive stopped working. help??

Answer»

I have both a C drive and a D drive. Use windows xp. anti virus thing is AVG and SPYBOT uh I dunno how much ram and stuff.

The d drive had pretty much all of my stuff on it, including everything on my desk top (quite alot of things I'd collected over six years)

So this morning I booted up my laptop which took almost half an HOUR to go from login to my desktop when it usally takes less than thirty seconds.

Everything save 'my computer' and the trash bin was gone and anything else that was on my d drive.

When I try and access the d drive it asks me to 'format' it but later on warns me doing so will delete anything on the drive so I haven't tried that (also have no what formatting means when it comes to harddrives)

besides being insanly SLOW nothing else seems to be nothing else wrong with it. Anti virus programs didn't pick up anything and it's never done this before.

Can anyone help me? I'd really apprciate it.

Ta, Cass.Sounds like the drive is GOING bad. Best to pull both drives out and hook them up to another computer to save any DATA...if it's not too late already

It seems sensible to me to have the same o/s on the other drive just in case the main drive fails.

If you're only going to put the OS on the other drive, I don't see a great benefit in that. You would still need to re-install all your other software. And, what about all your user files?

Technically, yes, you could install Windows on the second hard drive. Since your stated purpose is to have it as a backup in case the main drive fails, this means you'd want that drive to become drive C, right? So, to install Windows on the second drive, you should temporarily reconfigure your drive connections so that the new drive is recognized as C and then install Windows. I believe you should anticipate some obstacles in registering that installation of Windows. It's already been registered once; you may have some explaining to do with Microsoft. But, since it's on the same machine, I'm not sure how about this registration issue.Understood.
Since then I've lost the ability to boot to Windows ( a coincidnce if you can believe me?)
The os on Drive C was PLAYING up and has now failed.

I am now trying to do a repair from the XP Pro CD and have got as far as the Licence agreement .
I am given the choice of F8 = I agree , which I want to do, but sod's law will not gvie a response when I hit the F8 KEY. I've tried ALT F8 and EVERY other combo I can think of but it will only resonpnd to the ESC key!!

Solve : Computer acting sluggish?

Answer»

My computer has started acting sluggish of late, WELL it has been going on as Ive started loading more programs into memory. So Im sure it has to do with the amount of RAM, I only have 128MB, and I want to increase it to LIKE say 512MB or even to 1GB. How would I go about doing that?

Also I want to increase my HD capacity. Right now I have 20GB, and Im thinking of either getting a bigger HD (320GB) and putting it in, or getting an external HD (500GB). What are the PROS and cons of having an internal HD vs an external HD
Go to www.crucial.com, enter your computer brand, and model, and it'll TELL you what RAM you need.
With 20GB HD, I'd replace it with bigger (internal) drive. You don't have much room to play with 20GB.yes i am going to replace it with a bigger drive. As to getting the drive or knowing what to get, its a no brainer. Theres only one kind of internal drive. But, short of being able to see the manual for my computer, which I dont have anyway, how do I find out what kind of RAM my computer uses, cause I know there are different types of RAM modules.

So what me do?

OH, I can see the files, EXCEPT for the icon that represents unknown files over internet related desktop items, everything is there but nothing opens. I am figuring some drivers are now missing. For example you may have an app that uses .Net 2.0 but never uses .Net 3.5.....get it thanks for the quick reply

Solve : error messiges?

Answer»

Hi,

I have to problems the maybe be related (I do not know if it is.) So I put it in one POST. Please feel free to reply to one or the other if not both.

Thank you in advance.

PROBLEM 1
aawservice.exe has unfortunately experienced an unhandled exception and was forced to close.
Please submit this error and we will endeavor to.....(I am tiping this by hand the rest is known. )

This comes up every time I start the computer now. I tried looking up what the aawservice.exe does but found nothing. As for changes I made before this happened I could not tell you. I do not turn my computer off often so I am just now see this problem.

The rest of info is: (I was able to copy and past this.)
An unhandled exception occured at 0x7C812A5B in aawservice.exe

Exception Code : 0xe06d7363
Client version : 0.726
Attached Debugger : 0

(This is A LOT of info about the computer its self that fallows after this. If you like me to post it please tell me how to hide/spoiler it.)

PROBLEM 2

This may not or may be related to problem 1.

I have had an error coming on my computer for a long time now. A box would come up saying

SunXiGo.scr - Application Error (this is the title of box/window)

The instruction at "0x6932c1e1" referenced memory at "0x0000006c". The memory could not be "read".

Click on ok to terminate the program.

[ok]

I can not say the Application is the same nor can I say the at .... and memory at ... is the same. I do not know while typing this it just accord I should have noted that form the post ones but this problem kinda stooped a long time a go.

I did check the memory and it seems good. (I did this back when I got this kind of messages a lot.) Welcome to the CH forums.

Problem 1. aawservice.exe is an executable for the Adaware malware removal tool. Either remove Adaware from your pc or try this which is extracted from one of the sites found by GOOGLE here..

QUOTE

1. Open the Services Management Console (Click Start, Run, type in "services.msc" without the quotes, click OK).

2. Find "Ad-Aware 2007 Service" on the list and double-click it.

3. For the Startup Type, choose "Manual". Click OK and close the Services window.

The program aawservices.exe will no longer start at Windows startup, but will auto-load as needed whenever you run Ad-Aware 2007.
It will remain running after you close Ad-Aware 2007, but you can SAFELY kill it from the Windows Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del, Processes tab)

oops sorry I mean it stopped a long time a go but I know see the message again. (still not as much as before but still there)

One of the reasons, I don't use Adaware anymore is because it runs aawservice automatically, even, if Adaware is not used at the moment.
If you set the service to "Manual", Adaware refuses to run.
There is a workaround to it:

1. Go Start>Run. Type in:
services.msc
2. Find Ad-Aware 2007 Service. Set it to Manual
3. Create start_adaware.bat batch file with the following lines:

@ECHO OFF
Ad-Aware2007.exe
sc stop aawservice
@echo Done

4. Place start_adaware.bat in Ad-aware folder
5. LAUNCH start_adaware.bat to launch Ad-aware 2007

aawservice will be stopped when ad-aware quits

Another reason, I don't use Adaware anymore is, that I feel, it doesn't do a good job anymore.

Solve : Error code 0F00:0228 - data recovery help??

Answer»

I have trouble with my Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop, running Windows XP.

I have run diagnostics and ended up with Error code 0F00:0228.

Dell techical have said they can resolve but they want to return to factory settings and I lose my data. But there is some data I could really do with keeping.

Dell suggest TAKING to my local 'technician' (data recovery company?).

Or does anyone have a way I could do this?ONE solution is to grab one of these for about 8 Bucks...2.5" laptop to IDE connector:

This will allow you to remove the laptop DRIVE and hook it up as a slave in any Desktop system to retrieve your data...Many thanks - I will buy one.

(8 bucks, that must be around £100 at todays rate of exchange! )True...
I use Petro dollars myself.

I am having the same issue! I just purchased fix it software from Spotmau and it does not seem to work! This is soooo frustrating-yes, I have the same Dell Inspiron 6000 and xp--not sure what to do next !!?? I have bought this http://www.ebuyer.com/product/130517

I have removed the HARD drive from the laptop but it does not fit onto this adapter - or am I doing something wrong?

Have I bought the wrong product? Or do I have to remove the casing around the hard drive?

OK - I have sussed it!

I had to take off the converting plastic thingy from the hard drive to reveal a set of 'pins'.

And it works!!!!!

I can read the hard drive from another PC!

I can highly recommend the Plexus usb to ide 'thing'.

Solve : Stuck in DOS story?

Answer»

OK. This is the story: I will tell it as I did it (as best as I can remember as it is a couple of days already)and you pick out where I went wrong.
I got a "Compaq" PC which I am working with right now 320Mhz Pentium 2 Windows XP with working "Compaq?" CDROM player. This machine is not in the equation and still functions on the net so I can communicate this story.

I picked up from a friend - an "Azura" PC Data Server 1.2Ghz Pentium 2 Windows XP with a working "Creative" CDROM player and it all worked.

I also picked up from my brother - a "Dell" PC 550Mhz Pentium 3 Windows 98se with a working Benq CD burner/player and everything worked.

It was suggested:
that I swap out the "Benq" with the "Creative" then I would have a burner on a faster computer. The "Azura"

Sounded simple enough.
I unscrewed and did the physical part of it, carefully pulling the ribbon out of the CDROM and the other cables and reconnecting the other CDROM in the same way.

That is as far as I took it. I then powered on the "Azura pc" and surfed the net - not testing the CDROM out.

"I will when I need it now and worry about it later"(I thought).

I found the pc acting a little slower while surfing(but did not attribute it to the CDROM) I just thought that maybe I got some spyware . >> I run antivirus 24/7 so I knew it was not a virus<<.
So, I downloaded "SuperAntiSpyware", installed it and let it run. It found nothing except 3 tracking cookies from sites I trusted so I left them alone. Speed did not improve.
I am thinking maybe the "pc brains" are scrambled with the CD swap and needs a reset.
So I "switched off or powered down" the PC for a couple of hours completely.
When I powered up later, I get the first DOS screen(when it starts up, and it stays there). Will not go farther.
>>>> Be aware that while I am doing the physical swap, I pull the power out of the wall. I do not know how long CMOS batteries last but these PC's are years old (so the batteries may very well be dead). <<<<
Sidenote >>>I know I have a 486 with a dead Cmos battery and ran the computer (powering it on and off each night for years - (with Win98 staying intact) after the battery died with no problems)<<< but I never swapped out hardware either.

Searching for Boot Record from IDE-0..OK

And the cursor is flashing fairly quick on the bottom waiting.
~~~~~~
Hmmm. Okay. So I, first pulled the power plug out of the wall l then took out the BENQ burner and put back the CREATIVE CDROM as it was before hoping that things will right themselves when I turned on the power again. Was careful about unplugging and plugging it in carefully and the static thing.
No change. The cd light goes on but does not spin the disk.
that is where I am. What do I do next and how do I do it?
/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
What I have at my disposal is a win98se legitamite CD, a WinXp cd, a Nero cd(which is for the Benq CDROM) and a 3 1/2" systems disk for Win98
Also a pc on the net with a 3 1/2" floppy and CD reader.
None of the computers are connected together and they all have flash drives(I don't know if they work at this moment - as the computers may be blind to them too)
///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
I realize I am going to lose stuff...but I have most of it backed up on a removeable Flash drive so if we got to start again, I can do that.
Just how to do it. So that the CDRom drive is seen.
I have done the setup and changed the "first read" drive to read from the CDdrive first and it does for a moment searching for boot drive and then it switches to the "C drive" and "Searching for boot record IDE-0...OK
If you are going to talk "jumpers" to me - let me know what that is -what it looks like and how high it is jumping.
I just hooked everything back the way it was - the nuts and bolts of it.Listing 3 machines and 2 burners kind of muddles the thought process here...
Lets start with the ONE machine: the Azura.
How is the optical drive hooked up ? ?
Is it on the same ribbon cable as the hard drive or a seperate one? ?
If seperate it should be hooked to the end connector of the ribbon cable and the jumper on the rear of the drive next to the ribbon connector should be set as master.
MBoard===============================Slave========Master.
If after doing this and re-booting a few times produces no jpy-joy disconnect the burner and re-boot a few times to see if the slow response is still occuring...if so post back with more details.
Meantime also check how much free space you have on that hard drive and when you last ran diskclean; defrag and your protection scans...
BTW...these are drive jumpers although they are not all the same the drive itself will have small hard to read diagrams on the top or rear...
I put back the original CDROM unit(Creative 36X MX which is not a buRner. I was hoping the pc would see its old unit and work. It does not do these things? I will leave the old unit in if it is going to be a hassle.
But, how do I get it to see the CD drive?I asked a few questions so you don't get to ask any new ones until you answer mine...As I stated in the beginning, everything is back to their original PC's. The BuRner is not in this unit. It is the original CDRom reader as before.
To answer your questions and "thanks for the pics"- they help
For the optical drive: if you mean CDRom...the 40pin ribbon is single strip with no extra connectors and goes directly to a mobo connector
Hard drive is connected to the first connection of a 3 connection ribbion(the other end hangs free and the other end goes into a seperate connector beside the CDRom one on the Mobo.
The jumper is on master.
Going by memory, I believe the hard drive capacity was at the 4 oclock position- I do not keep pictures or music files or videos, my registry is clean, no spyware, it has been defragged, basically there is nothing major on it as temporary files are cleaned out weekly & most stuff is kept on removeable flash drive. Win XP does not need drivers for optical drives,,however i see you listed one machine as Win98.
For that machine you will have to track down drivers for the CDROM from the manufacturer.There's also the possibility that one or more of the drives has simply gone South...
Brand new dual-layer burners are less than 40 bucks shipped however plain old CD players will be even less.
To eliminate confusion i would CONCENTRATE on getting one drive at a time running rather than swapping them all around.Fine. Just "say" you don't know squat and I will move to somebody else. The chances of 3 drives going south at the same time is ...- I stand a better chance at winning the lottery. And I am taking drives that worked in other machines (so they are still "warm" from being used.
Stop being a saleman. Oh, yeah...and your car.....buy another. They are cheap at $30,000
signed Joe Mechanic. "D.A.OK. You win...
I don't know squat.
How about a game of Chess ? ?Well, in this case - thanks for the pictures but that is as far as it goes. The original CD unit is back in and it is not seen.
You have not explained why that is or where I could go to find out why that is. It is not broken, nor are the connectors as I have numerous ribbons that I can swap with.
And everything is the way it was ( and yet something is different)
I am guessing this is a programming thing (as I was careful with all the connecting wires and stuff related....so, it is giving me a headache. Can't play yet.So...
seconded.
the hard drive is usually MASTER, and the CD-ROM/Burner is set to SLAVE.
some of them don't like having it set to Cable Select.
One end hard drive, one end mobo, and the middle not connected? The drive will need to be on the end connector (well, not really- but some get cranky when they are connected with the middle connector and set to master)
your computer says the drive is 20GB. I don't think the amount of space used is important, though I could be wrong.
It recognizes the CDRom correctly by name(when I checked thru the Bios). It has been set as a secondary master(not by me)-that is the way it worked.
But it won't read anything off the CD disk. Such as the XP O.S. (or the Windows98cd) both are bootable. The CDrom light lights up and you can hear it "Whirr", but then it says
Searching CD boot record..OK
Searching for boot record from IDE-0..OK
AMD Athlons and Intel Pentium 2s are completely different types of processors.
You say that the chances of 3 optical drives all being unserviceable are greater than of you winning the lottery. That's bollocks. Consider their provenance: you get these (old) (discarded) computers, that were new round about when Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue, from your brother, and it's quite possible that they all have faults. There is a lot to wear out in an optical drive, plastic gears and tracks for example, (the silicone lube dries up and cakes as well!) and the read and write lasers get weak over time - especially the time since these computers were made.
Think about it: it sounds like they are all IT department throwouts. Better to buy new than to fix 'em.
I stand by my rudeness. If I take them out of machines that they were working in 5 minutes ago and now they don't work ?? tells me you are full of horse apples.
Maybe they have brainwashed you into buying new(that is what keeps the economy going) but I know better.
You sound like "front-line" material.
Also, I could have sworn I said something about Pentium 2's only going up to 450Mhz...
Do the drive trays open and close? If not, use a different power connector. Jumpers properly set as appropriate? if not, do so. cable in the right way around? Secure to the motherboard? if not, do that.
Who? Who are you talking about? Patio likely suggested the new burner option merely because with 3 computers listed, two of which are part of the problem, and one your using to post that we, for some reason, need to be aware of, it gets a bit CONFUSING what's what, especially when you talk about things like 1.2Ghz P2's as if they exist, things can get a bit confusing, which is likely why he emphasised trying to get one running at a time instead of jumping back and forth.
It amazes me, that a person with this type of attitude, is getting ANY replies....
Solve : Kill an application.?
Win XP Home/Pro.
Using TSKILL.exe for XP Home or TASKKILL.exe for Pro how can I kill an application which does not appear in the Processes list of TASK manager?
e.g. It's quite easy to kill Notepad as it appears in both the APPLICATIONS and Processes list but some other programs only show in the Applications list in Task Manager.
ThanksHow do you want to stop something what is not running?Sorry Broni - ANOTHER blonde day. The application is named "Project 1" but the process is named "ipcountrylookup" and I tried to kill the application name.
Oops & thanks.Still unclear.
What is "Project 1" program?
Does "Project 1" run process called "ipcountrylookup"?
Is process "ipcountrylookup" visible in Task Manager?
What exactly are you trying to do? Uninstall unwanted application?Quote
Does "Project 1" run process called "ipcountrylookup"?
YES, but I had expected to find mention of either Project 1 or Ipcountrylookup in both the Applications and Processes sections of Task Manager. This didn't happen and I thought that the application Project 1 was running without a corresponding process.
Quote
No, Have Revo to do that.
Thanks for your interest.
V.project 1 is a generic application name used by visual basic. Chances are the author didn't change the project name. However, the process name may be entirely different.
have you tried right-clicking the Project1 application in Task manager and selecting "go to process"?
If an application doesn't appear in either the processes or applications tab, then you are either looking for the wrong name or the program isn't running.
Spot on BC_P, that's exactly what happens, R.clicking Project 1>Go to Process takes me to ipcountrylookup.exe
Seems that if I want Taskkill to work the correct process name must be known in advance, but that's no big deal.
Solve : No Emulation?
Answer»
Greetings:
Any help would be most appreciated and most welcome. Machine I'm having a problem with:
Sony Viao
p3 866
Nvidia 128 MB graphics card (Ti4400)
Sound blaster Z gaming sound card
512 mb ram
yes, it's a very old machine which I gave to my young daughter for school and internet.
Ok, I installed a new IDE 320 GB hard drive. I booted from my windows xp disk and it seems to have formatted the disk without incident. After the format was complete and some files were installed the system tried to restart to complete the install. The screen read:
No Emulation
a disk error has occured
press ctrl-alt- delete to reboot.
This is the only hard drive I'm using and I've placed the jumper in a few different spots as recommended from the trouble shooting portion of the manual.
Thank you so much for any help offered.Welcome to the CH forums.
I haven't come across a definite answer but I suspect that a 320Gb hard drive is not supported. Would need to know the model number\mobo ID to dig further.
Thank you.
I can find three stickers on the mother board. They read:
00E0 18C 569 6B
1761375xx 0020443*
MS 1091440-M6PF20-B06-02975
The Hard drive being detected by the BIOS is:
WDC WD3200AAJB-00WGA0
The drive I removed was a Maxtor 40 GB ATA/66 drive and the excact modle of my computer is a Sony Vaio PCV-RX270DS.
Oh, I read somewhere where it was asked what what type of XP disk am I trying to install from. The disk has those colorful holograms on it if this is important.
Really, thanks so much for your time.
SteveThanks for the info. The USER and tech specs manuals I found for that model only give the hard drive size as 40Gb and don't state the maximum supported. Could you PARTITION/format the drive to give just one active partition of 40GB then reinstall the OS on that partition? No guarantees it will work and seems a waste of a decent sized hdd but it may allow a workaround.
Another option is, of course, to get out there and try to source an old hard drive 40Gb or less.
Nothing I tried worked so reinstalled my old 40GB drive and reformatted and did a clean install of windows. Everything went as smooth as can be. You're right, I guess this new drive is not compatible. I'll have to try and locate a 40GB drive to use as a second drive. What a waste of money and time that was.
Live and learn. I didn't think the actual size of a drive made a difference as long as the connection's were compatible.
Thank you,
SteveYou probably just need to set the drive up right in the BIOS. Did you do this first?
have you attempted to use the "cylinder reduction jumper" as stated in the manual? Unfortunately this will only allow you to use less then 40GB of SPACE, which kind of defeats the purpose.
Also- for some reason with my old computer; I found that the secondary IDE channel properly detected and could use a 160GB drive right off the bat, while using that same drive on the primary channel froze the computer at the detection stage.Dias:
Yes and thank you. I made sure the drive was selected and detected in the BIOS before anything.
BC:
I thought of that as well. I tried using the spare power plug and the secondary cable but had the same results. I know it sounds like I was ready to pull my hair out of my head, but I actually find this to be very relaxing and interesting.
And have to say; what a fantastic site. I've already spent hours reading different threads and learning as much as possible.If you can settle down to read this site you might want to give the workarounds a go. Suggest lotsa java on hand
Solve : I could use some help..please..?
Answer»
I've tried all I can think of but I'm still getting boned.
Lately my computer has been randomly freezing up. I'm not talking about "oh *censored* my comp is FROZE for like 2 minutes, this is such an inconvenience," i mean completely frozen. For the most part it starts when im in Firefox, first firefox will STOP responding, so then i'll try to bring up my task manager, that wont even come up, then i'll try and just such down my comp from the task bar...then my task bar freezes. I tried just letting my computer run...left it frozen for almost a day hoping it would unfreeze, of course it didnt. I thought maybe it was just a problem with firefox so i deleted that and went back to internet explorer :*( but then it still kept happening so i switched back to firefox
so when this all started happening i ran all my virus/malware/adware detectors (Avira-Free, Malwarebytes, and Spyware Doctor) but they all came up with nothing.
Windows is all up-to-date.
Ran fix problems thing and error check from my Windows recovery CD. Still no solution.
I feel like reformatting could be my answer but im having to wait to do that for a while because i need to save up some extra cash so i can get some files onto an external hard drive.
If anyone can offer up any advice it would be most appreciated. thanks.How much free space on the HD?
42% physical memory
it LOOKS like it runs at about 70% on avg...spikes to 100% whenever i mess around with a open window or anything.
Only about 3 programs run when start up..there my antivirus stuff
Ive got 2 GB of RAM on here already.
NEVER gets too hot and has plenty of room.
**side question:
Norton Protection Center came preinstalled when i bought this Comp. but i never got around to purchasing the full version...instead i bought spyware doctor and have malwarebytes and Avira-free version on here. my question is would it be alright to get rid of norton...i know its got a built in firewall so i didnt know if it would be bad to remove it.That machine and you will both be happier without Norton...
Visit their site for the removal tool.If you have Avira installed, you MUST uninstall Norton: http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039
Solve : have an hp pavilion 3300t?
Answer»
it is a laptop about FIVE years old. it has win XP on it. Problem is the none of the shutdown otions work. When I do start->turn off computer, none of the options
start->standby , start->turn off or start->restart
work. The computer just seems to ignore any of those clicks. The box just goes away and the computer stays on. Why is this not working and how do i FIX it? For how long have you been having this problem?
Any RECENT hardware/software changes?I have a downloaded version of AVG, but other than that no ther changes. I have office on my laptop, but this problem of the shutdown not working did not appear then. It appeared quite a while afterward. Ive had this problem for 6 MONTHS now, and I have no idea why its happening.
I have no peripherals attached to my laptop either
When did you install AVG? Recently, or 6 months ago?
Solve : Nothing will update?
Answer»
I have many things that try to update and each time I get a message saying to check my internet connection.
I also had a related problem with FRONTPAGE. I was unable to update my blog page until I went into safe mode, sent it and then we back to regular mode. This did not help my upgrades, however.
I was having a problem with MagicJack and the process to fix that required that I shut off my virus PROTECTION. However, shut off was denied, so I deleted Avast. Once I did that I was able to publish my page in regular mode. Once. I discovered the Bit Defender 10 FREE VERSION and download that. Now my page won't publish, and nothing is able to upgrade Bit Defender has no ignore option.
UPDATE:
I deleted all other spywear and virus CHECKERS and now Bit defender is updating and I believe FrontPage will publish.
