Solve : problem in opening USB mass storage?

Answer»

hi friends,

I have a USB mass storage of 4GB size. I have got an annoying issue with this today, its couldn't be opened seems like corrupted by some virus.

when I try to open this I get following warning:

The disk in drive I is not formatted
do you want to formate it now?

I have some important data in this hence i cant formate it, i just want to RECOVER all the data and then formate it.

here the OS is....WINDOWS XP SP3

is there any solution?

thanks in advanceHow is it being reported in Disk Management ? ?
Right clik My Computer select Manage...then Disk Management.
Right clik the 4G and select properties...Plugging it to any other machine and see the difference.

If it is still "not formatted", there should be something with the usb drive. In that case, I would recommend you to send it to the data recovery support center. They can help you out there. My bet is it was removed without using Safely Remove Hardware and it's going to show up RAW...Download Ubuntu, burn to CD, boot from CD, try to mount that way. Ubuntu is not as scary as it may seem, its very easy to use, dont even have to install it. If it wont mount, Data Recovery is probably the next thing. Ubuntu mounts lots of disks/drives that I've had errors with.

www.ubuntu.com

8.10 is the latest, but any will do. free download ISO, just burn and boot.

USB or PATA or SATA. Read his post. He says that in his experience Ubuntu has mounted disks with errors SUCCESSFULLY. It might or might not work, but have you tried it? Is it ruled out from first principles?
Yes..i have.RAW is RAW - no going back, whatever OS you use?

Solve : Win explorer problem...?

Does anyone know what might cause win explorer to NOT START up automatically? If I reboot, my desktop comes up, blank. Just the WALLPAPER. I can start explorer with taskmaster, but it's annoying knowing that something's wrong. I've ran sfc and win UPDATE is up to date...

Solve : Registry setting for "My Documents" folder location?

Answer»

Hi, Would you be able to tell me where in the registry the settings are that stores the location of "My Documents" folder. I know you can change it by going to the properties of this folder and CHANGING the target field, but how can I do it through the registry settings.

Just trying to find an automated way of doing it instead of manual process. I've been googling about this registry setting, but can't find any.You don't have to play with registry:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310147Hi Broni,

I actually read that page before. Whatever is mentioned in that page, requires manual process. You have to right click->select properties->change the path in the target field, etc.

This is pretty much boilerplate code. My Documents has subfolders (My Music, My Videos, etc) which are not processed by this script.

Code: [Select]Const HKEY_CURRENT_USER = &H80000001

strComputer = "."

Set objRegistry=GetObject("winmgmts:\\" & strComputer & "\root\default:StdRegProv")

strKeyPath = "Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders"
strValueName = "Personal"
strValue = 'new value goes here (quoted)

objRegistry.SetStringValue HKEY_CURRENT_USER, strKeyPath, strValueName, strValue

You will need to set the value of strValue before running the script. When messing with the registry, I suggest a system restore point or exporting the affected registry branch to a file. You can never be too careful.

STRANGE reasoning, very strange. How is your idea doing this via the registry any less manual than "right click->select properties->change the path in the target field"? Your're going spend a lot more time figuring out how to do this your way than the way Microsoft has provided to easily do it. Also, I don't know why you even call "right click->select properties->change the path in the target field" a manual process. Indeed, I see your way as more manual than the Move procedure that's readily available. You also can set a group policy in a AD domain. This would force the change to move the My Docs folder to say a server that COULD be backed up to tape.

Soybean, The reason you find this strange or even more manual is because I didn't mention why I want to use a script. I didn't think I needed to. If you were to do this once in a while, then yes, it's better AND EASIER to do it by changing the properties. But if you are doing it FREQUENTLY when supporting a lot of users on a regular basis, then it might be easier to use a script that you can run on the remote computer and everything will be set without having to do anything manually or even having the user involved.

Sidewinder, Thanks so much for your script. I will play with it and see how I can work with it.

Spoiler, You are right about the group policy, but unfortunately it's not being done that way at my place. At least not yet. May be in future.

Solve : Vista/XP compatability?

Answer»

I have a brand new Vista computer, my XP machine died? This new machine does not talk with my Palm m100
The new machine I ended up with has 2 hard drives "C" & "X" with Ghost tending X as a back up.
I also have a Maxtor external DRIVE on hand. Is it possible to put XP on the Mator and USE it, some how, with the new machine, to use my Palm m100?

Reason? $$$$$$$$$$$$ cheep cheep
Thanks
RalphSdoesnt sound like 2 hard drives, but the smaller of the two is a backup partition, which the operating systm sees as another drive but its part of the first one. You can boot xp on the current hard drive right now by making an about 20gb partition using the partition MANAGER. But, it sounds like you will get your Palm to work if you install drivers"So long as your pc is running 32-bit Vista, you can use your m100 with it by downloading and installing the new (and free) PalmHotsyncSetup utility from www.pimlicosoftware.com along with the Palm Desktop 6.2.2 which is available for DOWNLOAD at the palm website.

If your computer is running 64-bit Vista you are probably out of luck..."

I suggest you try doing that and also have a LOOK here (thats where i found the above answer)....

hope this helps!XP will not run from an external without a crowbar and about 4 days of tinkering...

Solve : doc sent to printer bubble?

Answer»

How can I get the system to stop putting the BUBBLE on the screen saying such and such document sent to the printer with the date/time, etc. It is annoying. I know you can x out of it or let it go away on its own, but if I'm sending a lot to print, I WOULD rather it just not be there on the screen--to me, the little printer icon is sufficient to let one know it's on its way to print.
Windows XP, service pack 3, Office 2007.

ThanksAdvanced Printing Properties may have a check box for displaying this info. I'd dig in there if you havent ALREADY and see if there is a FEATURE like this to SHUT off.I did try that to no avail--no option to turn that feature off. Thanks for replying though!I know this is a very miniscule issue compared to the biggies, but did find the answer just by googling the problem and thought I'd share.

Solve : XP Won't Load, Third HDD Added?

Answer»

Long story short: Did a reinstall of XP on a new HDD. All good but wouldn't load secondary HDDs. Installed Intel Application Accelerator RAID Edition from an online search that would load by itself (The one offered on Dell's site for my XPS Gen 3 required a floppy disk which I didn't have). XP now loads with second HDD attached but not with the third.

Question: What can I do to get XP to load with all three SATA HDDs attached?

Long Story: XP wasn't loading after installing Kaspersky Internet Security tried to fix it by using the Windows disk which made Safe Mode inaccessible as Windows needed to go through the setup process which would get the same BSoD as before. Was attempting to use the Recovery Console when the HDD dropped and broke (Makes musical SOUNDS). I tossed it aside and bought a new HDD.

Installed XP on new HDD. All works and is fine but XP won't load with the other two HDDs attached. I downloaded all the drivers from the Dell site for my computer (Originally an XPS Gen 3) which got the internet working again and downloaded drivers for my GPU and sound card... All is working as should. The Intel Application Accelerator RAID Edition from Dell's site required a floppy so I installed one I found online that didn't require any floppy. Since then XP will load fine with my second HDD attached but with the third attached too I get a blinking _ after the Dell start up screen.

I went out and bought Floppy Disks to run the Intel Application Accelerator RAID Edition offered on the Dell site and to install it with the Windows XP disk at the beginning in hopes of just reinstalling the entire OS with the proper "stuff" (Never realized how computer illiterate I am until now). Unfortunately, when I run the XP set up I hit F6 and chose either ACHI or RAID to get BSoD. I tried choosing the other and get BSoD. I tried choosing both and get BSoD.

My computer right now works with one drive attached but with both it doesn't, just the blinking _.

I'm running out ideas on how to remedy this and have pretty much exhausted every search engine with different searches for a fix. I don't know what to do and have been stuck in front of my computer for the last 48 hours. 24 hours getting everything up and running again and another 24 hours now just trying to get XP to load with all three HDDs attached.

The two HDDs are from my computer originally before replacing the main drive and reinstalling windows. I thought this was all plug and play but guess not. I really thought the Floppy install with F6 at the XP set up would be the end all but has proven useless. Now I'm installing SP3 (Grr, uninstalled before) in hopes it might make a difference.

Any ideas or suggestions or insights will be much appreciated. I so much want to get away from my computer but can't until it's all back together again.

Thank you. What type of RAID setup did you attempt here ? ?I didn't set up any RAID. I simply attached the new HDD and reinstalled XP on it then plugged back in the other two drives, which the other two didn't work and now only one does.

BIOS and everything is set up still from the original build from Dell which RAID is set for auto-detect Raid or ACHI otherwise (Something like that, will take a note of it when I restart again). Everything I've seen online about setting which HDD to load first and what not doesn't apply to my BIOS. ... In the BIOS its set to: Raid Autodetect/ACHI

Also, I've tried connecting the HDDs up with different ports. I got HDD 1 and 0 and also HDD Bay 1 (HDD Bay was the third drive with 0 the boot and 1 the other) though no matter how I have them connected I get the same results.

UPDATE:
SP3 made no difference. When I have all three drives hooked up I get: Error Loading OS.

I tried loading with my third HDD attached with the second unplugged and got the same error (Was thinking perhaps it was the third HDD but now it seems maybe it was the third HDD uniquely). I don't know why my third HDD would render the system unable to load. The third HDD is a 500GB I use for media, is filled mostly with videos and some applications. The second HDD is 170 (or so) gigs which has music, pictures and some applications. The new HDD with Windows installed is 500 Gigs... I'm thinking maybe my computer can't load more than a TB of hard drive which is why all three drives can't load or the first and third alone, though that doesn't make much sense to me. Both the window OS drive and the third HDD are Seagates, if that makes any difference.

Moreover, after being unable to load with SP3 or with the third drive attached with the second unattached, I tried loading as it has been with the OS drive and the second drive to then get the same error... I loaded now by having both drives unattached.

This is making less and less sense to me and just is becoming increasingly difficult.

UPDATE:
I tried using fixboot and fixmbr from the Recovery Console with both extra drives attached... Everything fixed and I exited to only have the same problem: Won't boot with booth drives attached or even one anymore. I get the message: No Boot Device Available, XP will only load with the single drive attached now

My only other idea here is to maybe run a Repair Install (Or whatever it's called) with the disk with both drives attached at the time, not sure if that will make a difference or not. Can anyone suggest if this might fix the problem and assure me the other two drives will be safe? When I originally installed the OS I had the two other drives deattached to be sure everything remains intact. Could this perhaps be the root of my problem? Would I have needed those other two drives attached during the install process?

Moreover, in my BIOS it seems the HDDs are all out of order. For instances, Drive 0 will DISPLAY it is missing and to hti F1 to continue. I assume perhaps if the proper drive is connected to Drive 0 in the bios there would be no issue but no matter which cable I hook up to the OS drive I have the same issue. I don't think bIOS is properly recognizing my drives and when doing the Fixbot noted above Windows referred to the OS drive as the D drive.

After 48+ hours of dealing with this I have to take a break as I'm near accepting my defeat. My last effort is to do yet another full reinstall and manually install all the drivers again and all that entails as I'm running out of hope though I do not know if that will solve the problem as I've already tried a full reinstall earlier with those Intel drivers from Dell to f6 in that results in the BSoD.

If anyone has any ideas or suggestions or know-abouts please let me know. I mean, even if I could afford to buy a new computer (was looking forward to building my own but having second thoughts now) I'm worried about this whole HDD swapping which if I wasn't to build my own I was going to buy cheap and just upgrade things myself but now I feel so incompetent. =(

Forgot to add in original post:
3.6 Pent 4
3 Gigs RAM
XP Home SP3Only Dell drivers should be used on Dell's...this has been an issue forever...
Especially the SATA drivers...How would I go about installing them? I downloaded them off the website but they require a floppy to install during the XP set up. I've tried to do this but get the BSoD. Also, which do I choose: Raid or ACHI or does it not matter or both? But more important is the BSoD I get after the drivers load from the floppy during the loading of files from the XP disk. I figured out the problem and am way embarrassed.... From the start of this issue I could easily run the disk diagnostics in the BIOS which noticed all the drives but always stated drive 0 as missing when unplugged or as the WRONG drive. I assumed the XP disk needed to be first and tried switching the cables around but it never worked so I then assumed perhaps BIOS was just relaying information from the previous disks, stupid I know, but it gets even stupider...

Ready to finally give in temporarily just to access my video and music files and log back ONTO WoW (I so much miss SWG) I went out to get a 1tb drive to replace all three, but had to try again... So I reinstalled XP on the 500 gig hdd and then attached the 1tb for the same issue to then think, "Maybe if I switch the power cables it'll load." Looking at the cables with the idea of switching the power cables it hit me... I was switching the power cables the whole time and not the SATA cable. So, so stupid. No less, I'm just glad to have this solved.

However, I still cannot get my third HDD to be recognized by XP. I have the capacity for four drives but always had three which while I can load XP with all three drives attached the third drive isn't being listed in Device Manager.

My theory again is that I'm missing the RAID drivers which will require a full reinstall of XP again. I'm very happy with my current install but will go through this all again unless there is any other idea.

Also, I can slipstream the drivers in making my own XP install disk as the floppy method causes a BSoD. My question now is: How do I know if I slipstream ACHI or RAID or both or does it not matter? The RAID drivers from the Dell site comes with both which I'm using nlite to slip in and before I go through yet another full reinstall I just want to be sure I have it all together this time. Thanks.

So Sorry:
As explained above how simple my problem was and how stupid I was for mixing the cable the resolve for this missing third drive is even worse. During this entire process BIOS has recognized all my drives but I forgot I reset it to the system defaults which of course would disable two of the SATA outlets as it originally shipped with only two drives. I just rolled back the driver for my disk controller in the Device Manager (Which was actually the updated driver I installed) which asked for a restart, so I did hoping maybe, just maybe, but also went into BIOS real quick and to my surprise the last two SATA connects were disabled.

Sure enough enabling that one SATA connect fixed my problem. My entire computer situation has been solved. Gawd, I feel like such a newb.

Solve : My documents folders, and related folders help please?

Answer»

Ok.. got a question for the experts.
A friend of mine went out and bought an external HD.
They want to move their "my documents" stuff to the new HD.
I managed to use the "properties" of my documents to relocate the FILES to the new HD, but they are no longer private. meaning the other users of the computer now have access to those files..

Not only that, the "temporary internet files" and user setting files, and such, are still on the C drive..

How do we change the location of those files, and make the "my documents" stuff, private again, so that other users cannot access another persons documents?

Thanks.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310147

yeah, I did that.. Unfortunately it opens up the "my documents" of each user, to EVERY other user..

In other words if user 1 logs on and goes to "my computer" then goes to the D drive, they can see and access the "my documents" of user 2 and user 3.

That's what I need to fix.
Any ideas?

Why are you using a external drive for this?

Did you format the drive with NTFS?

they are using an external drive, because the stupid blonde (family friend) didn't do what I told her to do, which was get a bigger INTERNAL drive, to replace the mere 40 GIG drive they had.

She listened to a fancy pants sales person instead of the family friend whose been doing computers SINCE the first PC's came out..and who has fixed their computer several times over the years.. at no cost.

So now they want me to make their "my documents" and all the temp internet stuff work off the new external D drive, and still make it so that no one else can access each OTHERS files.

I should have told her to take it back to the sales guy and have HIM do the stuff for them.

Solve : re dongle.?

Answer»

Hi every one,
I noticed that someone MENTIONED a dongle in a recent POST. My question is; What is a Dongle?
puzzled.
farmgalSometimes, they are USED as a key for authentication of software. (To make sure you didnt, say, download it)

But, more common is that its just a piece of hardware that attaches to the computer to extend its abilities. For example, a USB WiFi Adapter "dongle" ALLOWS your computer to connect via. WiFi.

Usually, today, dongles are presented in the form of a USB device. It used to be LTP or COM ports.

Solve : Resetting to Factory Settings?

Answer» HELLO, I have a question about resetting my computer (With Windows XP) back to factory settings.

I am looking to wipe all information from my computer hoping to RID it of all unneeded files/data. Afterwards I would install the few programs that I typically use. I would like to do this to possibly speed my MACHINE up and make it more organized.

Is this the right thing to do? Any negative consequences of doing this? What would resetting my computer back to factory settings do besides erasing everything? Would the operating system still be in tact? I have no Windows XP install disk if so.

Edit: Dell computer btw.
I think on a Dell it's called Factory Image Restore.

Anyways, this will bring the computer back to First-start conditions.

These comments confuse me. It SOUNDS as if the HD works on the neighbor's PC, but not on yours. If that's true, it sounds as if the problem isn't with the HD but with your PC. There wouldn't be any need to TAKE the HD apart to look for the problem and solution. Or have I totally misunderstood?? Try it on yet another PC to see if it works; then you'll know more about what's going on.
yes, it worked on my neighbours PC once, next time he connected the sound was hard and.............same then as mine, NO "visibility"....so I gave up

Solve : Minor Problem On Start up! [Probably Very Simple]?

Ok my computer specs are:

MS XP SP2 Home Edition
Intel Celeron 2.50GHz
376MB RAM
40 GB HDD

Yes i know very old, but it does the job well

Ok i recently posted a topic about the death of my computer, i realised that the registry was starting to go corrupt, so i backed up and went to factory settings.
Now my computer is running beautifully

Theres just a question id like to ask

You know when you first turn on your computer, and you are shown the black screen with the white writing on which says THINGS like "American Megatrends" "Hit F11 for boot setup etcetc
well when it says initilizaing USB Drivers, there is a long pause, for like 2-3 MINUTES, after which the drivers and all the usb devices are found and the computer loads up fine

i was just wondering why it was doing this

other than that, nothing is wrong

yes i know im dumb

It may be looking for USB bootable devices.... make sure the boot order in the bios is set to DISABLE USB Boot or change boot order to USB Boot after C: driveQuote from: DaveLembke on July 24, 2008, 12:15:08 PM

It may be looking for USB bootable devices.... make sure the boot order in the bios is set to Disable USB Boot or change boot order to USB Boot after C: drive

I agree. Restart your computer and press F11 to go into setup. Now FIND Boot Order or Boot sequence. Set your hard drive as the first boot device. You usually press the plus and minus keys to move you devices up and down. Now exit setup and SAVE changes.

By the way, have you ever considered upgrading your RAM? You would be amazed at how much difference it makes.

Solve : i think my hard disk starts spinning randomly?

Answer»

When Im doing anything on my computer, or actually when my computer is on, I hear my hard disk start every so often, about every fifteen minutes, stay SPINNING for about 4 minutes and then SLOW down or stop. Why is this happening and is it a problem? How do I fix it?This doesn't happen to be the fan is it?
Can you confirm it is the hard disk?u will need to open your computer up and watch it to see where the sound is coming from. Computers can have 2 or more fans so one of them could be going bad or it could be completley normalI guess ACTIVITY with the HDD LED should confirm whether a drive or not.

Have to wonder also what tasks you have running - scheduled events perhaps like email going to check server for email etc.

Be useful to know what is running when this happens - hard drives will IMO always be doing something at odd times even when it seems not much is happening, altho you suggest a rather fixed pattern - which could be puzzling.

Check ''Processes" and see what all is running behind the scenes.the funny thing is that I dont do anything which I havent done before, but it seems like the whirring noise is not related to anything Im doing. For example, say Im checking my email or surfing the web, at one time the whirring noise is not hear at another time it is, and its quite random. Is there a setting somewhere that says turn the hard disk on or make the hard disk run every so often?Quote

Probably Windows doing maintenance or indexing. Try turning of the Indexing Service and see if that helps. Turn it back on if you like the indexing benefit - I don't and I it off.I'm pretty sure it's the fan because:

Start>Run> type services.msc, enter>BE VERY CAREFUL IN HERE TO NOT DO ANYTHING UNINTENDED>Scroll to "Indexing Service">right-click>Properties>Stop service>set Startup type to Disabled; re-boot. Reverse and set startup type to Automatic to re-enable.

The hdd noise, if you're certain that's where the noise is coming from (see the posts above - ignoring any reference to 'seeing sound' ) could also be Windows re-sizing the swap file, malware activity, or a sign that the hdd is about to fail.

Download and run the diagnostic utility from your hdd mfg's site.

Run a complete anti-virus scan.

Most likely, there is nothing to worry about; but, if the noise is new it is worth investigating.

Finally, you are probably part of the 0.000000006% of computer users who regularly and properly backup their data - but, if not, now would be a good time to start! Good suggestion about stopping the indexing. What exactly is that though? Quote from: shashgo on July 23, 2008, 07:21:41 PM
Good suggestion about stopping the indexing. What exactly is that though?

Basically, the Indexing feature builds an index of the files on your computer so that any search will be FASTER. With the indexing service disabled, searches will still find files, the search will just take longer.
Windows search feature is pretty crappy, anyway, so no indexing service is running on my computers.

Solve : Slow Start Menu?

Broni,
SuperFinder only allows one to delete files one at a time, but the one I selected got the "do you want to send XXX to the recycle bin?" message

I'm holding off on that for a bit though.

edit: it looks like Windows search will let me select and delete all at onceOK.Broni,
I'm going to leave the UBCD files alone for now. If I delete them, I'll never figure out what's going on. They don't seem to be doing any harm.

I did make a "print screen" of both search results. I'll attach or insert into message if you want & can INSTRUCT how.

Solve : Format Local Disk (C Drive)?

Answer»

I have Windows XP installed on my COMPUTER and it is running slow...so as advised I've done the usual disk clean up, defrag etc... Still not ok so finally decided to format c drive and start again. I have backed up all the data. I have TRIED both options as suggested in help forums, to re start computer in MS Dos by pressing F8, and then formar c:\, pressed F8 nothing happened. I have the genuine Windows XP cd so I have tried to boot from cd as suggested and it says 'press any key to boot from cd' which I do but it still takes me to the usual windows xp desktop rather than a blue screen menu to chose to reinstall my cd. I also went into BIOS to chose to start from CD ROM but that didn't work. Not sure what else to try...last HOPE before having to call professionals in!!! Any help would be much apprecciated!...BEARING in mind I don't know much about computers!!! Verify boot order in BIOS is set to CD ROM before HD. I am guessing that it is already set up this way for the fact that you said you got the message press any key to boot from CD. But you need to make sure that the boot stripe of the CD Rom is read first before the hard drive or you can have issues when an OS is already present on the HD.If you are unable to boot up your Windows XP SP2 PC (Pro or Home), it may be because the boot sector has become corrupted (yet the operating system and data may still be OK). If that is the problem, then make yourself a Windows XP Boot CD with this Windows XP SP2 Boot CD ISO image which will enable your PC to ignore the boot sector on your actual hard disk, and instead use the boot sector on this boot CD in order to still boot successfully into Windows XP SP2. To create the boot CD use any CD writing software to open this ISO and create your Windows XP Boot CD. You may need to set your PC's BIOS to boot from CD ROM\DVD ROM drive.

Solve : Where are the printer settings saved?

Answer» HI, I'm trying to find out where the printer settings/preferences(not properties) being saved in windows. I understand that each printer's settings or preferences depends on it's DRIVER, but it MUST be saving those settings somewhere.

What I'm planning to do is to create a script that can add a printer from print server on a remote computer and also change a specific preference. I've checked the wmi/win32_printer documentation on microsoft site, but they only provide info on printer properties.

If you could point me to right direction, that would be GREAT. Thanks. If I understand your question, I think the answer is that the settings are stored in whatever application(s) you use. IOW, if you use Word, your printing preferences are saved in Word for printing Word files, and likewise for Excel, etc.Hi Soybean,

Thanks for your reply. The printer settings are not saved in the application.

If you go to "Start->Printer and Faxes" and select your printer. Right click on it and click on the "Preference" option, a window with various different settings or preference will come up. Let's SAY you always want to print both side of the paper and you set that option in that window. Now, your default printer settings will be printing on both side of the paper, no matter which application you use. Let me know if you need more clarification. Thanks.

Solve : Problem editing Registry entries via a command prompt?

Answer»

Hi,
I have been trying to crack editing registry entries via a command prompt. The problem I have is that the key has spaces in its NAME eg the "Recent File List" key in Wordpad. If I try and use the the command "reg query HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Applets\Wordpad /s" I get a list of the subkeys and values which includes the subkey "Recent File List". If I then ADD the subkey name to the end of the command to get just the value for this subkey, I get "Error: Invalid command-line parameters". Ive tried using / between the words so that it looks like this "Recent/ /File/ /List" and also enclosing the subkey name in " " NONE of which works.

Any ideas anyone???

TIA for any help It should be somthing like:

reg query "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Applets\Wordpad" /V "Recent File List"

If you want to add a value, then use reg addTried it and it comes back with "Error: The system was unable to find the SPECIFIED registry key or value"This should work:

Code: [Select]reg query "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Applets\Wordpad\Recent File List" /s

Did you try reg /query /?.

Edit: This post has been relocated here from the WINDOWS forum, not sure why because the problem lies with the Task Scheduler not with the batch scripts. When Cmd.exe or the Windows TOUR or any other program is opened from within Scheduled Tasks, Tasklist and Taskmanager show that they are running but no screen output.

Win XP Pro.

I need to know how to disable silent mode when a task is run from the Task Scheduler. Tasks run to completion but without necessary screen output.

ThanksHow do you know it's a task scheduler problem?

Are you running a batch script? If so does that batch script have any 'pause' s in it?

If the batch file is running to completion and not given any other instructions it will remain when run from cmd.exe but disappear when run from somewhere else. Try putting in a 'pause' after the information you want is outputted.

FBIf you don't mind, I've merged the two topics and moved this all to the Windows Section. If I remember correctly, there's a checkbox in the Scheduled Task called "Run only when logged on." That has to be enabled. Otherwise, the task will run as whatever user credentials are specified in the task. If that user is different than the user logged on, there will be no screen output. THANK you for your interest.

I reckon it's not a scripting problem as other programs which normally show screen output do not do so when started from Task Scheduler. However, I've tried to run a script (Files.bat) which, although it doesn't have Pause commands in it does have Ping commands to create a short pause in execution. The attachments show programs running without screen output (Solitaire {sol.exe} and Pinball.exe).

I haven't yet found the checkbox "Run only when logged on" but will continue searching. There is just one user on the system (see Accounts attachment) so the chances of tasks running in another user are fairly slim.

Solve : Used my Dell reinstallation CD on my HP laptop - can't change key to activate XP?

Answer»

My HP Pavilion ze4125 was disabled by viruses. My daughter lost the HP startup CD and Windows XP Home Edition CD from HP in Iraq. My IT friend used my Dell startup CD from my Dell Dimension 8300 and the Windows XP Home Edition CD from Dell and got the laptop going. I tried to activate Windows XP by changing the product key using the internet and calling Windows Tech and HP Tech. Windows Tech said I have to get HP to unlock the SLP. HP Tech says they can fix it for $59 but can't send me a new startup disk. Windows Tech said they could fix it but it would cost me, I think $100. Staples would fix it for $100. The laptop is about 7 yrs old and I hate to spend anymore money on it. I got optimistic after my IT friend got it going and put 1 Gig of memory in it for $40. The Windows Tech said I could buy a 3rd party HP Pavilion ze4125 startup CD for $28 and she assured me it would work to get the Windows XP activated. I looked up the Windows XP activation instructions on the HP site and it says most activities don't require me to activate Windows XP, except what my IT friend did, i.e. use my Dell CD to startup my HP laptop. I hate to pay more to use the Windows XP program I already PAID for. Any advice or suggestions - or should I GIVE up and buy a $200 netbook on sale? Frustrated and stingy, Paul BYou should only use a HP disk on a HP computer. The key is only valid for that company. If you really have a HP product, and if it really has a COA on it, you can legally install the HP CD and do not have to pay anything.
However, any Tech who does this for you will want you to pay for his time. There are people who will help you with this, but I don't think members of this FORUM would like it if I told you how to get the CD for free. Because it would sound like I am helping someone to pirate the Windows software.
I have a Compaq laptop and the HP XP CD installs perfectly There is no problem if you have an authentic HP or Compaq computer that was made for Windows XP. It does not work on a computer that has been 'de-branded' and is no longer a authentic product.
Maybe you have a fiend that can explain this to you better that I can. You have to have the right CD for that brand of computer. And you should not have to pay for it.Quote

Solve : help with getting into safe mode?

Answer»

I apologize if i am asking a question that you get asked all the time.

But when i read through here and google my problem isn't QUITE addressed.

Basically last night I shut teh computer down as normal.

This morning when i turned it on it stops and says:

Press DEL to enter setup, Alt-F2 to enter EZ Flst

However NOTHING works. We tested teh keyboard which seems to be working.

One site said to press F8 instead which i tried and then it said press DEL or ESC to skip memory TEST. But then did nothing, when i turned it off it went bck to saying teh alt F2 thing.

I have some very important files on there that i need back. I am currently on the laptop.

The desktop has windows XP professional on it.does anyone know what i can do?? please help, i desperately nee dto get those files Well, here is what I would do. Get one of those nifty adapters that can hoop any kind of HDD up to a USB port. Then take the HDD out of your big computer, put it into the USB gadget and then power up you laptop and it should find the HDD as a USB storage device.

Search Google for
USB HDD adapter
Make sure to get one with an AC poser adapter, the laptop may not have enough power for the standard HDD. Expect to pay $20 to $40 for a good one.

Then you can get to your files.
If you are 'Jack' and the USB drive is E: then your files are in:
Code: [Select]E:\Documents and Settings\Jack\My Documents

For me, that is the easy way.
I am better with a screwdriver that with software.
At least I think I am!

The other way is to BOOT your Desktop with Ubuntu...
and use a cross over cable...
Na, I don't want to explain that. Too much mental work.

Find a screwdriver.

Try when booting, keep hitting the F8 key (hope that is the one for your computer) until you get the SCREEN with the choice how to boot. Don't worry about skipping the memory test.http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/download.html

this is a dos bootable cd for free you can boot of it and copy your files to a flash drive. i think it has a gui so you dont have to use dos commands.

How are you trying to delete everything? You should be either deleting partitions, re-partitioning then formatting, or just formatting.

Guidance on doing a clean install of XP, complete with screen output images in the L.pane, are here..

Good luck

Please wait before you erase everything.
What kind of computer do you have?
Why do you want to start over?
Do you want to set the computer back to the original state it had when you bought it? How old is the computer?

What kind of IT course is this? Whose course?

Solve : reload XP?

Answer»

I wanted to reload XP to clear/clean my system out, but when I ran the xp disc it said that the version I was trying to load was older than the one running, so to install the disc (older disc ) I would have to shut down and boot on the disc, the problem is my pc has not auto ran a cd / dvd for a long time and do not know how to switch auto run on ( or off)

Thanks
Ned Autorun will not help in this instance as XP will still do the version search prior to install...

What's happened here is your XP install has probably had Service Pack2 and maybe 3 INSTALLED and the CD you have is probably XP with SP1...therefore it reads as an older version.

@ ways around this: Borrow an XP CD that includes SP2 ( versions MUST match i.e. Home=Home and Pro=Pro ).
Or if you have a floppy drive in there you can DLoad and create a bootable floppy and format from there.
Last option would be to DLoad a third party hard disk utility to wipe the drive...they are FREE from the drive manuf. websites...
GOOD Luck and let us know.Another option to supplement Patio's advice:

1) Copy the CD's contents to a folder. Something like C:\XPCD

2) Download Windows XP Service Pack 3 from Microsoft's website.

3) Download nLite: http://www.nliteos.com

4) Use nLite to slipstream Service Pack 3 into C:\XPCD and create a new CD.Hi and thanks,
I have XP home which includes service pack two, in the past (long time ago) I would install the xp and then download the updates, anyway if I wiped clean and STARTED again would I then be able to install my xp home with SP2 on and then download service pack 3.
Would this be the easy/best way to GO !

Thanks

Solve : requestion about dhcp server, some questions about planning a dhcp to a network?

hii all

i had some problems with the dhcp concepts :

what is single server / multiple server solution ?? and what's relay agent ?

i hope someone can help me as soon as possible

thanx for your supportIs this a homework task? You can just Google "single server SOLUTIONS" and get lots of info. Is that what you want?
If you want to SET up a server at home or school just to learn how it works, you need to TALK to the people on the Linux FORUM. Linux is often used as a server on a desktop PC. At the present TIME many small companies single servers.

Solve : Cannot Dual Boot Windows 7 & Windows XP Home?

Answer»

I installed Windows 7 beta on a 2nd HDD on my Windows XP Home computer. The install went well and I had no trouble booting into Windows 7, accessing the web, installing a driver for my nVidia e-Ge-Force FX5200 video card and installing Norton 360 version 3 beta. When I rebooted and selected Windows XP I got the following error: "File:\ntldr Status 0x000000f Info: The selected entry could not be loaded because the application is missing or corrupt." I rebooted and ran the Recovery Console from the Windows XP CD and ran Fixmbr C: and Fixboot C:. When I rebooted, I did not get the dual bootup option but went straight to Windows XP. Windows XP is fine. However, I cannot boot to Windows 7. What options do I have to fix this problem. I do not mind reinstalling Windows 7. However, if I do so, how can I avoid this problem?Re-install it and LEAVE Norton off this time...wow. not only was it Norton, but it was Beta as well. Even I can't seem to think of a metaphor extreme enough to FIT this situation. The only THING WORSE then an AV that does absolutely nothing is an untested AV that does absolutely nothing.

Solve : Laptop will not boot from CD?

Answer»

Hi from Scotland, how are we all? I want to fully reinstall XP on my laptop but it will not boot from the XP CD even after changing boot order. It seems to be a common problem and I have tried all of the things that seem to turn up. I got an updated BIOS which made no difference, I tried all the different boot orders, there is no option to delete any of the other boot options, I even tried to make a FLOPPY boot set from Microsoft but had problems there too, I need to completely wipe evertything from the HDD and start again but XP just reinstalls and leaves all my files intact, by the way the laptop is a Compaq Presario 2100 which works fine otherwise. Many thanks in anticipation, Jim.You can't boot from a diskette either? Did you make sure the diskette was bootable?

Did you try replacing your DVD-ROM player? You should PERFORM these 2 things.

1. Boot that CD/DVD on different machine, to see if its working and bootable.

2. Use another bootable CD/DVD, to see if the drive is working.

Hi guys, thanks for replying. DVD player works fine , I am trying to boot from the Windows XP CD which should hopefully enable me to FORMAT the partition and do a complete fresh install of XP, but it will only ever boot from the hard disc , floppy drive works ok in that it reads floppies but when I try to write the Microsoft boot disc files(downloaded from Microsoft to the 6 floppies it goes so far and then has an error which may be because the floppies are a bit old, even though they format ok , Jim. Is there a better way of trying to do what I am doing maybe? The XP boot disks are redundant. Can you try a Windows 98 bootdisk instead? Get it off bootdisk.com.

If that works, you're most likely not configuring your BIOS PROPERLY when it comes to the boot order.

Ok thanks for replying, will try that, boot disc order seems ok as the highlighted one for CD is at top, then save and exit but it just ignores it and boots from HDD, Jim.And you are certain the CD player works? What kind of laptop is it?

Can you disable the other boot devices? Maybe it just needs more time. Hi Raptor, its a Compaq Presario 2100, I don't see an option on the BIOS to disable the other boot options, DVD?CD player works fine, it will load XP cd no problem and other things from other CDs, thanks again, Jim.When in setup pressing F10 saves changes and exits...
Have you tried this way yet ? ?Yes thanks patio, that is what I am doing, Jim.Yes, you should try another CD first!! and set BIOS
if it also DOESNT work, your computer needs repair.

Solve : Table of contents in Microsoft Word?

Answer»

I'm working in a very long Word DOCUMENT that has about a 3 page table of contents at the beginning. After edits are made to the document, I'm trying to update the entire table (Right Click/ Update Field/ Update entire table). When this action is taken, it duplicates some of the lines in the table (some of the bookmarks are listed TWICE.. some with different pages than the original), and I'm not sure how to make this stop happening.

I didn't create the document, so I don't know if something FUNNY might've been DONE.. or where the bookmarks are being pulled from.

Does anyone know ANYTHING about this, and how I might be able to keep the duplicate lines from my document?

Thanks!

Solve : windows update 1?

Answer»

I have windows xp and keeping getting the YELLOW shield TELLING me I have a update. When I try installing them it keeps COMING up that it couldn't be downloaded. This is the update: Update for Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB959140)Go to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/959140 and try to get it from there.I tried to get it there and it said. The windows installer service is already running on your system. Please wait until it is finished then apply this update.

This could be an answer to the other problem I'm having with a window installer box that COMES up, acts like it downloading something then SAYS in a status box, the feature you are trying to use is on a cd-rom or other removable disk that is not available. There is also in the same box the message Insert the status disk and click ok. Also a drop down bar that says in front of it USE SOURCE w/ a 1 as the only option.

If you click this, it keeps coming back the finally goes to another status box thats says, An installation package for the product status cannot be found. Try the installation again using a valid copy or the installationpackage 'status msi'

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!Windows Installer Fix...

Solve : New Xp key????

Answer»

Read the rules. It's very clear that assisting with torrents is not allowed.

I don't care how you or anybody else gets their software but these discussions PUT CH at risk so are not allowed.

There are resources for dealers and technicians to get volume license keys as well as any disk that MS distributes. Just because torrents are easy and there are no hoops to jump through does not mean it's right, or OK.Sorry GUYS... I was going along the lines that Raptor had about the licensing. My bad. But I just got my drive reformatted and XP installed and ACTIVATED. Thanks for all your guy's help!!!! A very bad MOVE here............

It would have been better to borrow a WINDOWS CD, but at least you got the problem solved...

I don't want the Kiss icon on my Desktop.

I CHANGE the icon with XP and the NEXT time I use the icon , the Kiss icon returns.

Help

It's wanting you to kiss it goodbye before it will leave.

Your image shows that both icons are a shortcut for Computer Help. Why not just delete the kiss icon? Kiss it goodbye i say...for serious i know one evetrmly molishous virus called itch.EXE it changes your wallpaper to the korn logo but not kiss

run a virus scan because im pretty shure this cold be a virus but be shure your virus scanner is updated

also when you get the updeates dont retart because like itch the mabe so virus could TAKE off jpg mp3 or even exe files off your comp, RESTART later (the virus scanner will be in full effect, it just needs to change the startup/redgestry on your comp). The problem corrected itself. I had messed with some system files and a reboot corrected the very minor problem.

We may change a desktop icon appearance that points to a url address.

Solve : Computer Crash? Windows XP?

Answer»

Maybe there is something wrong with my uncles external hard drive? My uncles computer crashed not to long ago.I put my uncle external hard drive in and i guess it was copying files or reading them, but all of a sudden my computer restarted on its own. Maybe this is what caused his computer to crash? and now when i boot it up it keeps asking to go on safe MODE or safe mode with networking, safe mode with commanda prompt, and last known good configuration, but none of them work, it just keeps restarting. I don't want to lose my files and I don't know what to do. What is wrong with my computer? Is it a crash, bug, or virus. I've even pressed F8 and pressed everything like DEBUGGING, enable boot logging, and disable automatic restart on system failure. Then the blue screen of death shows up STOP: 0x00000000ED (0xc0000006, 0x00000000, 0x00000000). I am running on Windows XP... I don't know what to do now. How do I fix my computer and save my files I have in my hard drive.there may be problem with a new device driver,
if you have a xp CD you could try this:

Boot the WinXP CD
ENTER the Recovery Console by pressing 'r' when prompted.
Then from the COMMAND prompt run "chkdsk C: /r"

Good Luck
First of all, do you have the proper XP install and repair CD? This is NOT the same as the 'restore' CD used by some PC makers for low-budget systems. . It has to be the real XP install and repair disk. Sometimes they are shipped with computers, sometimes not. Look and see and come back here when you know what CD came with your PC. ige yeahQuote from: Theorey on January 16, 2009, 08:54:10 AM

Solve : XP boot problem on laptop. white bar takes long to get from left to right.?

Answer»

I am not sure if this is the right forum or if I should post in hardware. if so, mods... feel free to move thread to correct forum.

anyway, I am checking on my niece's laptop , which is a Dell Inspiron 5150. she says that a year or so ago, XP wouldn't boot, she spent 4 hours on phone with Dell TECH SERVICE and they had her do a fresh install of XP (she lost everything on hard drive.) and they couldn't figure out the problem.
i turned on the computer, and this is what happens...
Dell logo comes on and white bar goes normally from left to right.
Then... black screen for maybe 45-60 seconds.
Then...the white XP progress bar at the bottom of the screen appears and it TAKES about 10 minutes or so to go from left to right... then XP boots up fine and it appears to be working normally. Since she lost everything, she's basically got XP LOADED up and not really any other apps.

could this ACTUALLY be a hard disk failing issue? or bad RAM? i am not very familiar with laptops, but it seems like the fan is maybe working extra hard and the laptop does seem pretty warm. I just don't know how to check these things.

thanks in advance.btw - XP Home Edition

Hello I have been trying to back up my bookmark folders from Mozilla and they come up with a .json extension. but now I cant get windows to read the file? Is this normal, or is it because windows cant read mozilla file extensions or SOMETHING?

Any input would be greatly appreciated here thank you.Quote

Since when?
Use:
1. Mozbackup: http://mozbackup.jasnapaka.com/
or/end
2. FEBE: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2109Broni thanks for that input. I downloaded it and used it to back up, , but I just dont seem to be able to view what I saved because its a .json file extension.
Ive been on the FEBE site but cant get it to show me what Ive saved?Ive been trying to get this backup to work but MUST say I dont understand it.
It seems I have backed up my bookmarks and have a copy of FEBE on the flash drive, just I can open the files to "see" them.
Can some one please tell me what Im doing wrong. Thank you. With Mozbackup, you simply run it, and put a checkmark in "Backup a PROFILE" to make a backup.
To restore the backup, you put checkmark in "Restore a profile":

you should be able to right click the file and pick open with...than pick notepad as the program you WANT to use.

Solve : BSOD help please?

Answer»

I have a dell inspiron 8600 that just give me the bsod. It says

??L_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL at the TOP then down below it has

0x0000000A (0xFF1701F0, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0x804D9B64)

The only thing that was going on when this happenened was that I was installing a new wireless router for my parents with their new laptop. It is a linksys rangeplus N . Could it have done something to the 8600 through its wifi connection? Any help would be great.

RandyCan you boot at all?Yes, I can get it to boot into safe mode.

Its running xp with sp2. It is a 1.5ghz celeron proccesor with 384megs of ram. This is my folks laptop and the 40gig hdd was almost full.

I went in control panel and got rid of all the games and junk that was on the hard drive.

My main concern is to retrieve the info off the hdd to put on their new laptop, once thats done I was going to reinstall xp clean. They are going to give me the old laptop for setting up their new one.

I am willing to get an external enclosure if thats what I need to do.

I was able to see first of top message now.

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

Hope this helps

RandyIn this case, I'd get enclosure, get all data off, and go for clean install.
Keep in mind, that the above error may be caused by bad RAM, overheating, or even bad driver.
I'd get more RAM anyway. 384MB for XP is pretty low. Thanks for the help, I will LET you know how it works out.

YEA, the ram is low and I will add a 1 gig card, it should be good for the internet and email.

RandyI forgot to mention it goes clear to the user login screen before it goes to the bsod.

RandyAn almost full hard drive will do a number of funky things without notice...Notice doesn't include BSOD You guys have been a great help, I am picking up a enclosure tomorrow and will get the file we need off so I can do a clean install.

I also have to install a lcd inverter in it as the screen is not working right as well. That what started the WHOLE thing of my folks buying a new laptop and it has just snowballed from there.

Have you noticed that when you start MESSING with stuff more stuff messes up.

RandyThat's a "rule"
Keep us posted Ok, I picked up a 120 hard drive from micro center and got everything back working. I did have to go to dell and get all my drivers for all the media and ethernet, but the best part is I figured it all out and am posting from that computer right now. Thanks for the help and support. This has got to be the best site out there.
