Solve : problem with Partion Magic?

Answer»

Hi;

I've done a stupid thing. I have an older Dell laptop which was RUNNING Windows 98 and was hopelessly messed up from years of playing with it, so I decided to install Windows XP (Home) hoping to do a fresh install and WIPE everything out.
When I was using '98 I had formated my 10gig HD into 5 separate (and roughly equal) partitions.
I was successful in INSTALLING the XP but it seems to have installed in the "C" partition (which is slightly larger than 2 gig) and the other partitions or 8 gig are nowhere to be seen.

What I was wanting to do was completely wipe out everything, and install Windows XP into the C drive with no partitions. Not SURE what to do now. Oh, I should mention my version of XP is the upgrade version.

Can ANYONE help? ???javascript:replaceText('%20???',%20document.forms.postmodify.message);

This is not neccessarily true if it is a cold boot....the monitor MAY not warm up enough to catch the post screen....
He would need to leave the machine / monitor on for a few minutes and then do a re-boot to test this.
Good point though.Quote from: Broni on August 25, 2008, 07:08:40 PM

Solve : windows xp failing to start?

Answer»

im pretty sure that i have to erase my hard drive and re load everything on it but thought i would check to see if there is any possibe way to save everything and not do that.

a couple of days ago i was running my virus scan to see if there was something that was causing my laptop to run very slow. the only thing dected was an adware infection that was listed as not a threat. i did not have the option to remove the file from my computer, only to quarantine or ignore the threat. so i decided to quarantine it thinking it would stop everything. so i clicked quarantine and got a message saying to windows needs to restart in order to complete operation. after the restart my computer booted up fine as usual. then as i clicked to check for updates for my antivirus software. this then brought up the mcafee home window which said several virus' had been dected. so i turned off my wireless connection and ran virus scan once more. after it was complete i deleted the infected files and restarted my computer.

now here's the problem. i cant access anything on my computer. i turn it on and the screen loads up from the toshiba screen through xp loading. it then loads up my desktop with nothing on it and sits there until computer is shut down. so the only thing that shows up is the wall paper. the computer doest freeze because im am still able to ctrl+alt+del to shut down. so i re-boot and press f8. with f8 i have TRIED ever single option and nothing works. i have tried safe mode and the screen just sits there black with safe mode in all the corners and service pack 3 across the top. same thing goes for safe mode with networking. the only option that does not just sit there black is safe mode with command prompt. the command prompt OPENS up and im able to use that but i dont know if there is a way to attempt to fix it using command prompt.

if anyone knows anything that will help i would appreciate it very much.
thank you...

Solve : File opened directly from Internet Explorer is now gone?

Answer»

A few days ago my wife needed me to email a word document file to her. She's not particularly computer savvy, and she opened the file directly from Internet Explorer rather than saving it to her hard drive (i.e. when asked "Do you want to open or save this file?" she clicked on "open"). She spent hours working on the document and "saved" it multiple times along the way, but she never did a "save as". Today when she went to work on it again, she couldn't find it.

After she told me the situation, I thought, "ah ha!" it must in the Temporary Internet Files folder. However, there is no trace of it there. The folder is stuffed with crap, so I figured that it must've been purged or whatever, but even when I open up the original version of the file in the same way and save it in the same way she did, I can not find it in the Temporary Internet Files folder.

This seems like a HUGE mistake on Microsoft's that this could happen, and I am thusly more annoyed with them than ever. However, more importantly, is there ANYTHING I can do to get this document back for her? Fortunately for her she has plenty of time to re-constitute the whole thing, but the time wasted was way too much for it all to be lost for such a silly thing.

Thanks!what about the most recently used list that appears in the file menu? (assuming this is PRE 2007)start, search, all files and folders, all or part of file name [ *.doc ], press the search button

The above will find all Ms Word files on your computer.

Make Sure Search is set to search in hidden file and folders.

To display hidden files and folders
1.Open Folder Options in Control Panel.
oClick Start, and then click Control Panel.
oDouble-click Folder Options.
2.On the View tab, under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders.
Notes
•Hidden files and folders will appear dimmed to indicate they are not typical items. Usually, hidden files are program or system files that should not be deleted or changed. To display other hidden files, clear the Hide protected operating system files (Recommended) check box.
•If you know the name of a hidden file or folder, you can search for it. For more information, click Related Topics.
•If you want to see all file name extensions, clear the Hide file extensions for known file types check box.

C:\>your advice is necessary only in the case that the file doesn't appear on the Most Recenty Used List maintained by office applications.

And your DOS based search accomplishes nothing over the windows search, other then increased verbosity. (also avoiding that blasted dog)

Let's wait until the OP returns.

Additionally, the file actually wouldn't have been downloaded to temporary internet files, but rather would have placed itself on the desktop (the default download location) or in the %TEMP% directory. Thanks for your replies. I suppose I should have orifinially mentioned that we tried both checking the recent documents and searching for all .doc files. No dice.

This is really strange. When IE asks you whether you want to "open" or "download" a file, it must download it in either case. It's just if you say you want to "open" it, it downloads it to a temporary folder (which I figured was the Temporary Internet Files folder) and then prompts the application, Word in this case, to open it. However, as I mentioned in the original post, when I tried doing exactly what she did (opening the file directly and then saving it in Word) and then searching for it, even then I couldn't find it. It's like Word saves it into a blackhole never to be seen again.

At this point it's a theoretical dicussion anyway since she's already put the time back into re-constituting the document, but I am curious to know what's going on here. If it's this easy for someone to lose their work, SOMETHING is wrong...

Thanks againIt's possible- that IE downloads the file, but when CREATING it, gives it a special file open file, called "FILE_DELETE_ON_CLOSE". Word opens it as well; and you can even save during that session. But once word (or whatever application was used to open it) closes the file, it dissapears.

Use the XP search and *.doc . The "*" is a wild card and will find most MS Word documents.

On my computer with XP Home, the DOS search will find files that the MS Search misses. When having difficulty finding a file, Use the DOS search. It cannot hurt and will most likely help. Use all tools available.Quote from: billrich on January 06, 2009, 02:18:56 PM

No need to explain the basic semantics of the asterisk wildcard. (and don't delve into uses of the question mark wildcard either )

I believe the only difference between what the DOS search finds and the XP search finds is that the DOS search will search %SYSTEMROOT% whereas the Windows Search will not search system folders.

however, the dir command you've provided will not search hidden folders, and would not find hidden files, either. you would need to specify the /a switch to do so.

Code: [Select]dir *.doc /s /a /w

/w of course isn't necessary but makes the results easier to view if there is more then a pageful of files. of course one could optionally employ the /p switch or pipe the result to more.

Code: [Select]dir *.doc /s /a /w /p
or

Code: [Select]dir *.doc /s /a /w | more

problem being I don't believe the person having difficulty locating the files has any experience using the DOS prompt and likely would prefer a GUI based solution.BC wrote:

The suggestion was not for you but for the person who lost the file.

I'm sorry you don't use DOS. You might have found the file.

I tried to understand your explanation of the lost file. I have no idea what you are talking about.

If I don't know what you talking about, how will a new user follow your discussion. I have 40 years of experience.

Good luck with the people you offer help.

Since the lost document was already reconstituted, I was merely theorizing on the way IE might have downloaded the file.

It Opens a file for output to write it. THis file is located in the temp directory specified by %TEMP%
but it uses the DELETE_ON_CLOSE flag.
then it launches word.
which opens the file as well
IE closes the file.
in word, it is modified, Saves are performed, but no save as, so it's the same file.
the file is closed.
which results in it's deletion.

this would explain the dissapearance of the file from the Most recently used list, since I believe the office programs check wether a file exists before adding a menu ITEM for it.

Additionally, regardless of the search method used, a deleted file in not going to be found, except by using a recovery tool.

And this was BC's point on sending someone to the command prompt for help as well...

Let's face it there is no one way in a Forum atmosphere to determine the user's skill level or what they understand about their issue...they just want a resolution.
I know personally people who although they have had a PC for 8 plus years wouldn't know what to do with the command prompt and most likely would panic with the results and quit.

That being said let's remember we are here to help...and bickering about different ways to achieve the results not only doesn't help the OP but shines a bad light on the process itself.

At least it still has to do with windows, instead of going into a completely off-topic rant about end-users, idiots, people, drones, and even more unrelated stuff.

W7 still uses the "tupperware" look, as you describe it.

No, I might later on. Doubt it because I don't feel like dual booting and potentially screwing up the systems I got. Maybe you could give me a link to a minimum specs page? If it will run on a Pentium III coppermine 933MHz/133MHz FSB/256KB L2, 512MB PC133 SDRAM, 10GB IDE ATA66 hard drive, and a 32X CD-ROM, then I should be able to run it on a system I got. Oh, GPU is a 64MB 32 bit MX100, that or its a 32MB card, if it is I don't know about the bittage, its AGP 2/4x.

If that was the machine you put Vista on, it's no surprise you found the experience less then pleasant. Installing Windows 7 would result in a Less then pleasant experience as well.

Again, my point was only partially understood, the point is, in a few sentences, this; Simply put, the human race in its entirety has been solving and creating problems due to its ability to choose, as I said. Choose to act, or don't, its free will in the end, which brings us back to the root. I choose, to resist and utterly disgrace vista in every way because I despise its very being. Isn't this what humans do to things they despise though? Make them out to something there not?

So... you're saying that your making Vista out to be bad, and it's not.

now i'm thoroughly confused re: your stance on Vista.

It's also hard to "get the point" when it changes with each succeeding post.

First it's about people being drones, and doing the same thing over and over.

then it was about how the universe was going to die eventually anyway so nothing matters...

then it was about how people having the ability to choose causes all the problems.

Alright, that actually managed to make me laugh. As for the system I had vista on, it was my notebook. Refer to the Specs bubble to the left. It wasn't just Vista I had issues with though, I'll be clear on that. Lemme make a list of things I hate about Vista:

First and foremost, as a gamer, I hate DX10. In 2007, when I used it, with my compatible 8600M GT in my notebook, it caused HORRIBLE graphical glitches. There is no way to run anything but DX10 in vista

Secondly, I listen to music when I'm not gaming, I prefer to use windows media player 10. Come to find out, it isn't compatible with vista, only windows media player 11, which, I am not alone on hating.

Thirdly, my notebook ran vista as slowly as the 333MHz K6 AMD I have would run XP. As in, roughly 60-70% of the laptops RAM was eaten while idling, everything ran hot due to the load, the CPU would randomly spike to maximum load, and usually idle at around 30%. That's with vista dummed down too. Maybe they fixed it in the TWO years since I used it, but I ain't using it again! No way, no how!

Finally, the overall performance of my laptop while running vista was simply horrible. I couldn't run counter-strike: SOURCE on medium settings in vista with the latest or older drivers 'cause of DX10. Couldn't run Half-Life 2 any better either. I can run both CSS and Half-Life 2 maxed running windows XP pro SP2 with DX9, no hardware changes, just the OS.

For me, Vista is absolutely a waste of time, resources, and a strain on my sanity. This argument is becoming a strain on my sanity as well... Anyway, my laptop did get a pretty high vista score too. I'll see if I can dig it up, if I can, I'll link it to this convo. I SCREEN shotted it before I killed vista.

EDIT:

Found the WEI score, this was before I turned of Aero to try to make things a bit more manageable.

Quote

well, Calum has explained that already, that's smartfetch at work.

Besides, I never... Oh, I did... say I liked Vista.

I do... but I still use XP more.

I've said it before I believe, but I ran XP on my K6-2 350Mhz for almost 5 years with few problems. didn't seem much slower then 98SE in most respects.

*Shudder*

I used to use WMP myself. Then one night I was sleepy, so I just shut off the speakers (leaving the computer playing music). In the morning, I returned, to find that RAMpage was indicating 12MB free out of my 1GB.

All of it was occupied by WMP.

so I switched to WinAMP, even though of had sworn not to... oh well. things change. I also swore not to use XP.

Rumor has it that it is actually more robust than Vista (surprise! That usually doesn't happen with Windows--its successor being more robust than its predecessor).

I guess the best way to put it is that Windows 7 can actually run on a machine with 1 GB of RAM, whereas Vista struggles on such machines. I'm not sure about 512 MB, though...that might be pushing it. If Microsoft wants Windows 7 to replace XP on Asus EeePCs, then it needs to...Yeah, I've heard rumors that there going to use Windows 7 as a mobile platform aswell, though I don't know if there anything more than just rumors. If that is the case, then it will definitely use less RAM than XP. In which case, I can deal with the Windows Theme By Tupperware if it comes to it. So long as there's a true classic look to windows SOMEWHERE. By classic look, I mean, things like the control panel, how XP has it as classic, not how vista has it. Come to think of it, I don't even recall Vista having a "Classic" control panel view option, just the "Uber n00b" interface.

I'm old fashioned about a lot of things, I prefer clunky CRT monitors over LCD's, I prefer old tube based audio equipment over digital stuff, unless the digital stuff is some of the good equipment from the 70's. I also prefer old automobiles, for the main reason that I know I can work on them. That, and there cheap to repair. How many people here can get there starter rebuilt for $80 without pulling half there car apart to get to it? My father and I had to pull the starter off of his '86 oldsmobile custom cruiser 'cause it was used when we threw it on there about a year before. Had to pull it off in February of 07, and it was like, 20F outside.

So there we were, legs sticking out from under the front end of the wagon laying on the cold gravel driveway. I was holding the starter with my arms stretched above my head while my father tried to thread one of two bolts that hold it to the block of the 307. I was about to drop the 30LB starter, felt more like 90LB's holding it in that position, closer to over a hundred once my arms started to cramp due to the cold and awkward position. Mind you, we had to do this in reverse to get the starter off in the first place. Its not that hard to remove if you have access to a lift, but the only thing we have is a bunch of jack stands that are older than me. Anyway, getting the alternator rebuilt was much easier.. It had the decency to die in the summer, and its practically one of the easiest belt driven devices on that engine to remove, not to put back on though.. If the belt tension is wrong you'll eat or break the belt....

Anyway, theirs a reason I'm going into computers over automobiles, for one, I don't have or want a degree in "Automotive Science". For two, I can't work on most any vehicle past 1992-'94 depending on the make/model and how much crap they loaded onto it. That, and, working on computers usually allows me to sit around most of my SHIFT. 'Less it gets busy and I become the hardware gopher, that isn't to bad unless they want me to move some CRT monitor or desktop that was made at some point before time as we know it existed.lol, every sunday I get to put a truck delivery away for our Freezer. around 150 boxes, weighing about 60 pounds each. Not too heavy, really, but there's 150 of them.

Usually in there for an hour.
Jesus that's a lot of food... Walk-In Freezers are great in the summer though. The one at the Kroger I use to work at had a old AOpen system monitoring and controlling it, it was running windows 2000 I think. Everywhere we go, windows plagues us. I bet if they computerized the traffic lights around here they'd use windows. Which, brings an interesting question to mind; What happens if the traffic grid computer BLUESCREENS? Do all the lights go green? or red? Yellow maybe? Or do they stop working entirely. I'd rather not find out as long as I'm part of the traffic it affects, would be fun to watch though Quote from: Dead_Reckon on January 06, 2009, 02:45:51 PM

I'm pretty sure the traffic light computers aren't programmable- their behaviour is probably directly in the circuits and ROM chips.

People seem to completely forget the 4-way stop rule at traffic light intersections when the power goes out or they malfunction.

Come to think of it, I don't even recall Vista having a "Classic" control panel view option, just the "Uber n00b" interface.

Vista has a Classic Control Panel and a Classic Start Menu.

In fact, I'd say the only parts of Vista that can't be reverted to "Classic" are:
- the logon screen
- the boot-up splash screen
- the Desktop icons
- the location of profile-specific folders (C:\Users instead of C:\Documents and Settings, for example).

i hadn't downloaded anything just b4 this happened, but the only thing i can think of that might have caused it is...

when i go into my documents where i have some downloaded stuff, i WOULD get a windows explorer error message saying it needs to close to protect data or something like that. i singled out a file, by rearranging and putting in different files till i didnt get that message again, then deleted it. after i did that, i restarted and the blue screen came up. any suggestions? ideas? (Click to consult the online MSDN article.)
The process creation failure indicated by this error message can only happen during the fairly brief time that the Windows Executive is being initialized, which is during phase 4 of Windows startup. Typically there is a problem with a device driver or with a missing or corrupt system file used during Windows startup.

Any NEW drivers tried recently ? ?
If so REVERT back to the originals...

If you can BOOT the machine go to Start/Run and type in SFC /scannow...have your XP CD handy.

Solve : Unable to boot, access denied to account files?

Answer»

I have seen many threads similar to my issue but all have been ABLE to rectify but myself within XP. Boot sector DIED and had the XP CD rebuild it. VERIFIED the boot.ini file but still no good. Can not boot in Safe Mode. Recovery Console does not recognize my Admin password used for my Admin account. I tried a non-destructive reinstall with no joy. I also tried varies data recovery tools on bootable CD's but none can get in "Documents and Settings" becuase access is denied. Long story short....tryied everything. I can slave my drive to a good PC and view the files in Explorer but "access is denied" to all of my files within "Documents and Settings". How can I get to my protected files without loggin into the drive, which is unbootable. I'm UNABLE to change the Simple File Sharing on this drive because I can not log into the NTFS file system as administrator or in safe mode, only view the files as specified above. Ideas?Try This.Boogots - Welcome to the CH forums.

To prevent the Recovery Console setup asking for a password, here's a quote extracted from this site.

Quote

On many XP installations you can't start the Recovery Console because it won't recognize your password. This registry edit causes the Recovery Console not to ask for a password. This works for both XP HOME and XP Professional.

Start | Run | Regedit
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Setup\RecoveryConsole
Set the DWORD SecurityLevel value to 1
Exit Registry and Reboot

Good luck

Solve : DNS Flush?

Answer»

OK, so whenever I try to upload something on PHOTOBUCKET, I get this error message:

http://img233.imageshack.us/img233/5303/photobproblemwi7.jpg

and I also can't access the online portion of one of the games I play, getting the message "There was a connection problem. Make sure you are connected to the Internet and can access http://www.eso.com from your web browser.

It seems to me that the problems are related because they happened at the same time (and both photobucket and the online game worked fine before) and that they both seem to be because of connection issues, and RECENTLY I was messing around with my IP settings.

Anyway, I was trouble shooting through the photobucket website, and have done everything they have suggested, except the "DNS flush". When i type in ipconfig /flushdns, it gives me the message "The requested operation requires elevation"

On photobucket, they SAID this was because I needed administrator rights. However, I am the sole user and have the sole account on my computer, and it definitely has admin rights.

So basically, I'm asking how I can do the DNS flush, or maybe someone here can be more helpful than photobucket and suggest to me something better than a LIST of possible solutions.*´¨)

Try to run the Command Prompt with elevated privileges before running the "route" command. Simply right-click the "Command Prompt" and choose to "Run as Administrator". That will initiate the UAC prompt for elevated privileges. If you are a member of the local administrator-group you should simply have to select continue, otherwise you need to enter the administrative password.

Kudos MSDN.

You may also want to run ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew.

Solve : Wordpad help?

Answer»

I am running Win XP Pro and I use the Built In Wordpad to do and edit text.

I need to know SOMETHINGS about Wordpad?
When I insert an Image into my Text do I always have to have the ariganle Image in the same place for it to show up in the text document?

Or does Wordpad just make a Copy of the Image and place it into the text document?depends wether your embedding or LINKING the image into your document. If I Embed an Image can I Delette the Ariganle image from my Computer or will it still need it??

And if the Image is 2 inch big and I Embed it I gess I can resize it on the Text Document will this make the whole text file BIGGER in Bytes or only the size of the Ariganle image BEFOR you Embed it will make the size of you text document bigger in Bytes??the embedded image is written to the document as an OLE stream. You won't need to original unless you link it. Resizing will not affect the size of the embedded image and will only change the way the program SHOWS it.

Solve : Windows XP Home Updates.?

Answer»

Win XP Home SP.2 - Genuine copy.

Am trying to get updates but going round in circles. I went to the updates site and clicked to check the Update History and got the message:
Quote

You have not yet installed updates from this website or by turning on automatic updating on your computer. To select and install updates now, GO to our Home Page."
I do have Auto Updates turned on and it SEEMED to be working as the yellow shield appears in the taskbar. When I shutdown there seems to be always one update installed.

I went to the Home Page and selected Express to get high priority updates. A windows opened with what looks like a PROGRESS bar and "Checking for the latest updates for your computer"

Another window opened with "Software upgrade for some windows components required" Clicked on "Download and Install now"

A third window showed "Updates are being installed now" then "The following updates were not installed Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130)" My XP has been subjected to the WGA already.

Meantime the yellow shield shows in the taskbar "Updates are ready for your computer" Clicked on it - "The updates are being installed, you can continue....etc." Another window showed "Some updates could not be installed. Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1".

These sequence repeats.

Are these known problems with updates and is there a fix please?

Many thanks

My PC was able to download and install 89 of 90 updates (WU has not worked since I re-installed XP SP2 from disc weeks ago). Only Microsoft .NET framework failed to install. Do I need this and if so how do I get it and how do I know what version I need?

Also, I was advised by a friend not to download & install SP3 yet. He said to give it some time to let Microsoft work out any problems with it. Is this right or should I get SP3 also?

Thanks again,

Its a PDF? not sure what that is or if it will help one of you computer-smart ppl help me but PLEASE help me! email or REPLY ASAP PLEASE! You can try installing an older version of Adobe Reader...
But, since that doesnt have as many features, I am going to recommend Foxit Reader for Windows ME:
http://filehippo.com/download_foxit/

Its a LITTLE DIFFERENT, and personally, I prefer the original Adobe Reader, however, this one works quite well, and will work better than an outdated version of Adobe. (Especially bug and feature wise)User asked via PM if Foxit Reader would work fine, even THOUGH the download instructions specifically said that Adobe Reader needs to be installed.

Yes, Foxit reader is very similar to Adobe in nearly every aspect. They both display the PDF file relatively the same way as well, there should be no noticeable differences while viewing content. Thank You, Zylstra! You're a peach! I'm only 29, but I love it when my Grandma says that to me.

I posted a week or so ago about the green screen problem. Well it has healed it self for now. On New Years DAY when I turned on the computer I was on another forum trying to read something. The VIRUS scan (PC Cillen14) was running and the screen kept jumping and bringing me to the top of the PAGE. I SOON realized the screen was much sharper and clearer. I opened some pictures and checked them and they are clear and OK. So I am really happy for now and hope it does not COME back ever again . Wishful thinking on my part . I am sure it real rear its ugly head again some time.

Solve : System32 drivers - failure to boot.?

Answer»

Hello All.
I got an HP tower, P4 and successfully installed windows XP on to it. I had an issue installing the driver for the built in network card and on a reboot I found that the windows failes to load. It reads "Windows cannot stsrt because - system 32\DRIVERS\pci.sys is MISSING"
It said place original CD in drive and press r at first screen, in an attempt to repair. This fails to work and I get a blue screen with error code 7 or 4 on it.

Any ADVISE is welcome.I am not super familiar with hp,,, I do have instructions for my son's hp pc, which is an hp pavilion. Do u have the instructions for win INSTALL? If it were me i'd try to hit the f key to format and recover. If prompted try to recover from discs... some of the information in the rocovery partition may be corrupt. Good luck. hope this will help!Where is your HP Driver CD ? ?
The correct drivers will be on it.
If you are getting errors you may need to re-install the chipset drivers as well. Thanks for your help but after a couple of reboots - it worked and I don't know why.I don't either...but it's good news.and we can cautiously ASSUME it's a once in a blue-moon experience.

Solve : can't login..black Windows screen?

Answer»

I completely lack computer skills!
When I turn on my computer like I normally would, the screen comes up black in the background and it says "Microsoft Windows XP (with the logo)" and then under it, it says, "to begin, click username" There are no usernames to click on though and I cannot get past this in any way. There are no other available options.
By pressing ctrl+alt+delete I was able to get a place to login, but when I try, everything i put in says.."your username or password may be incorrect...blah blah."
We have two "sides" to our computer, we log into our side w/ a password and our son logs into his w/out one. I tried his w/out password & ours with its typical password, but it never gets us anywhere! I have tried pressing F8 and many of the options GIVEN there, but with no luck! Does anyone have any advice for me? I would appreciate it SO much! I am on another computer now, but our main computer has everything on it!! Thank you! You're talking about this screen, right?
http://www.raymond.cc/images/xp_welcome_screen.gif

What happened before the problem? (Downloads/installs/hardware changes/ect....?)

When did it start?

Can you log in via Safe Mode?Yes..that is the screen, but instead of its usual color, it is black in the background, and it says to "log in", but there is nothing to click on in which to do so! I have tried CLICKING all around the screen, tried ENTERING in "safe mode" (just takes me to the same screen, but safe mode "style" to log in...black background again, and nothing to "click" on)
I have also tried pressing F8 and doing "last known good configuration" which makes the computer seem like its doing something, but takes me again back to the "black" login screen with nothing to click on to login!
I also tried F8 and safe mode w/command prompt, all to no avail
I am not aware of any changes, downloads, etc. that have happened recently, and all computer "users" in my home have said they have not done anything out of the ordinary, so I am completely stumped & very frustrated & WORRIED! I do not want to restore & lose all my valuable photos & computer "info"
I don't know if it is just something simple....or big trouble!
Would appreciate any input so much!
THANKS!

i think the trick is to know which part of the registry holds the "other" section of "my computer" it's a was a pure uninstall for 8.5 then installed 2009

Actually... no...

You would have to find out which IShellFolder Implementation is adding that object to the shell namespace, retrieve the CLSID of that object, do a reverse lookup in the registry for the InprocServer32 that instantiates it, and then all you've done is determined what is creating it.

It does sound LIKE a missing DLL still listed as a Component Category for Shell Extensions...

Alright...

It is a shell extension that Windows Live Installs. Try this-

you'll need to locate the extensions file. On my computer it is: "C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\fsshext.8.1.0178.00.dll" (I'm using Messenger 8.1). the "fsshext" part will likely be the same on your version; if there is more then one, you should probably try this with all of them...

once you've found this file- you need to unregister it:

create a new Command Prompt window- Start->Run (SEARCH) cmd
replace the file with the path/filename of the fsshext file you found in the following command:
Code: [Select]regsvr32 -u "C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\fsshext.8.1.0178.00.dll"

a confirmation dialog should appear. If you don't want a new Sharing folder appearing after you REBOOT from the latest version, you can rename the latest numbered version you find to another name- when I need to do something of the sort, I just tack ".old" to the end of the name.

You will likely need to reboot for the icon to disappear now. I hope this works for you.thanks BC_Programmer that did the trick it was just a 8.5 instead of 8.1
and the icon became a "deletable shortcut actually" so i PRESSED delete key and YES and it was gone for good. good to hear!

come back anytime! Nice job, BC I'm always up to a challenge of this sort. Gives me an excuse to use process explorer to see what Explorer loaded as an extensions... then some "simple" monitoring of the thread stacks when I clicked on my web folders icon... and there it was, the dll file that needed to be unregistered

Elementary, my dear watson...

Solve : IE resize handles hidden!?

Answer»

I have been searching for information on this, but anything I can find is way over my head. What I ran into recently is that I noticed that unlike all other windows, my IE windows on this particular computer are not showing a resize handle when the mouse pointer is at the edge of the IE window. (It looks like the "horizontal rule" symbol above this text field, eg.: <-->.) This change happened fairly recently, I think, though I am not absolutely sure. None of my several other computers* do this.

*I have a small home based business.

Neither my wife or I have any idea what could have caused this change in behavior. I assume it might be some leftover from some site we've been on? It "bugs" me, as it makes it somewhat harder to SELECT the right position to grab an IE window edge, such as for resizing on just one side.

Does anyone know of a reasaonably easy way to correct this that doesn't require knowledge to write code, etc?

FWIW, I am running IE 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.080814-1233.

Thanks!

other then the change of behaviour, does the window look any different? As far as I can tell, the window otherwise looks normal / as always. And I assume it's only IE windows?

your quite right to be vexed by this though, it is most unusual.

I'll do some searching and test with my version of IE6, see if I can reproduce the problem and give you a solution.

It's likely some registry key got flipped.

But- I STARTED IE6 on my machine, and I personally found that the cursor needed to be in a one-pixel wide area in order to become the Double-headed resize arrow. Do you simply not get the double-sized cursor arrow? What about the statusbar Grip handle- does that work?Hi, BC,

I retried VERY carefully. Same thing: I can grab any edge of the IE window, and move it (the edge), but no double arrow shows up. The STATUS bar can be grabbed more easily, of course, and the window moved as usual, but no "handle" there, either. The same thing happens with my Juno software (which essentially functions off IE also, I believe.)

All other programs windows (that I have tried) seem to be functioning normally. In Notepad, for example, the cursor becomes a normal pointer arrow as I approach the border of the window from inside the window (text field), closely. Then when I am right over the border, the usual double arrow handle displays, and then once I am outside the window (on the desktop, in this case), the normal mouse pointer reappears.

The number of windows open, etc., appears to have no effect, and time (how long I am "on the border") has no effect either.

This really is a weird one. I suppose I could reload IE 6.0 - I haven't even checked yet to see if MS still makes it available? (I don't really care for the GUI of 7.0, as it exists on our laptop...)

Thanks! My advise: move up to IE 7

As well as Soybeans suggestion; double-check the settings in Appearance->advanced for the window border, and try increasing it a bit.

As far as keeping IE6, I'm not sure but I believe MS has a few service releases/windows updates, if you haven't installed them.Is IE maximized, when you try?Quote from: Broni on January 13, 2009, 11:14:32 PM
Is IE maximized, when you try?

No, this is the normal "restore down" window (about 1/2 of the screen.) This only happens on IE.Quote from: BC_Programmer on January 13, 2009, 12:51:31 PM

Are you suggesting the Appearance -> Advanced menu in Desktop Properties? That makes the borders wider, but the handles still do not appear.

I pretty much keep up with the updates. I just checked again at the MS Update site - the only thing they recommend for this machine is XP SP3, and IE7, both of which I am trying to AVOID... (More to bog it down, and, we have IE7 on our laptop: In terms of using it, I think MS went backwards with IE7...)

Anyway, thanks. Maybe I'll try a couple more / other forums.

Solve : "Print Screen" does not work on XP.?

Answer»

hi, Maybe SOMEONE can help with this problem. I have tried a few work arounds but no success as yet.

I have a very valuable DOS program which I use to solve problems. There is no equivalent on the market. When it runs, it takes over the whole screen. There appears to be no way to get it to run in a window. To obtain a record of results, I usually hit the print screen button and paste the screen dump into my photo editor, which can then be saved and printed as a JPG.

The above works fine on Win2k, but on XP the screen dump doesn't work. Now, there are programs such as Hypersnap which can take an image from a window, but Hypersnap cannot take an image from my full screen such as I have with this DOS program.

Another issue to take into account is that the program only runs with a parallel port dongle, so communication to the dongle port is essential. Are you running the program in full screen?

Thanks for the response. There appears to be no choice. Despite my trying to change this, the program runs as full screen. When you start the program, there is a slight pause and then it takes over the screen completely. I can still use the ALT-TAB combo to revert into another running program or window. Please tell us what you've tried - Alt+Enter to TOGGLE screen size? Shift+Print Scr to dump the screen?

Have you tried running it in compatibility mode ? ?
To do this create a desktop shortcut to the .exe...
Power down and re-boot.
Now right click the icon and select compatibility mode.
There should also be screen size options under advanced.

If not the other option is to try DosBox.Thanks everyone. I'll have to follow this up later. I realized today that I don't have a printer port in my laptop any more so can't even plug the dongle in.LTP Port, you mean?

I highly recommend dedicating an older computer to this program.
If it worked in Windows 2000, AIM for Windows 2000, its still a very stable OS, and relatively secure with all SERVICE packs and updates installed.

Windows XP is right around the time where we still saw LTP ports, but, we started loosing software/OS driven support of LTP. Vista doesnt support it at all, I dont think.

Solve : Looks Like I'm Stuck in Safe Mode?

Answer»

i installed windows xp pro and when it was done my monitor looks like its in safe mode, and when i check the screen resolution it is set to lowest but it wont let me change it this is a gateway comp. can you help ? Did you recieve a Driver CD with this Gateway ? ?
If so you need to install the drivers...start with the CHIPSET first and then all others.
Installing the video driver will cure this issue...I did not get any disks with this GatewayYou will have to visit their site then and find the drivers using your Model # and Windows version....
Or you can DLoad ; install and run Everest Home (Free) which will tell you every component in that machine.I don't have internet on that COMPUTER so I'm connected to you on my laptop.
I have downloaded all the drivers from there web site and i will burn to disk, then I'm hoping i can install them from the disk is that possible?Yes.
Make sure they are the correct ones for your Model# and as i said the chipset drivers go FIRST...They have 2 sets one is ( XP ) the other is (XP 64 bit) I cant find a 64 bit any were so i will go with XP wish me luckTo find your Windows version OPEN Windows Explorer ( not Internet Explorer) and clik Help/About Windows...

And Best of Luck...Thank you I'll keep you postedNo luck the drivers I used did not fix the resolution problem, I installed the chip driver first then the video driver then the others no luckDLoad, install and run Everest Home...
Run the Computer Summary scan and save it to a text file...
Post the results here and we'll hekp you track down the correct video drivers...I hope this is what you need

Have you recently done anything to the Registry like running a Registry cleaner? They always seem to remove things that are needed.
May try using System Restore and go back to a time before PROBLEMS started.

Solve : Have Vista installed. Want to install XP but have upgrade version only?

Answer»

I have Vista Business installed on my computer. I would like to install Windows XP also. I partitioned my hard drive and formatted it so there's an area for Windows XP. I booted from the XP install CD and successfully started the install process but unforturnetly I have only an upgrade version of XP. At one point it was looking to see if I had a previous version of Windows installed on my computer and it can't find anything. Is there a way AROUND this problem or do I need to acquire a full version install CD of Windows XP or something earlier to do the install? If you have a copy of Windows 98SE, 2000, or Me ... Full install CD's available you can use on o fthose when it asks to detect the prior or older OS that is paired up with the clean Upgrade install. Without these, you cant do it without illegally hacking it. I'd pick up a cheap ( original ) of a prior OS on CD that you can pair with this install on ebay etc and go that route or you will have to buy a new Full Copy of XP for about $130Thanks. We think alike. Before I saw your reply I went to ebay. I found a Windows 95 full version for $ 6 and $ 11.40 shipping.

In the install instructions it said it would accept a Windows 95 install CD. Make sure that there are XP drivers available for your motherboard, if your SYSTEM is FAIRLY new.

Do you have AVG Free as a virus scanner? yes, you think that might be causing problem? Not sure what Raptor is going, but I have a question.

Do you have the genuine Windows CD?

What Operating System?QUOTE from: andjos on December 23, 2008, 12:47:43 PM

yes, you think that might be causing problem?

I think you might need to do the following before you do anything else. Although this problem has long been fixed, I guess that if you do not update often enough you can still run into this problem;

Quote
1583:
AVG 7.5 - False positive "user32.dll"

In case you are not able to run your Windows XP operating system after AVG 7.5 virus definition update, it may be caused by a false positive on a specific "user32.dll" system file. The file was moved to the AVG Virus Vault and deleted. THEREFORE it is not possible to start Windows. Please follow the steps below to rectify this situation:

In case you do not have Windows XP installation CD with the latest updates, we strongly recommend you to use our fix tool instead. The mentioned fix tool can be found in FAQ 1584.

WARNING! There is a HIGH probability of incompatibility with other system files (for example with winsrv.dll) if the latest installation CD is not used. This can also cause inabitity to start operating system.

1. Please insert the Windows XP installation CD and boot computer from this CD (if you do not have the installation CD please follow steps mentioned in our FAQ 1584).

2. Choose and run Recovery Console.

3. Choose Windows operating system you want to repair.

4. Disable AVG Resident Shield from loading. You can disable loading services/drivers with "disable" command, i.e. you have to type the following commands (some

of them might not be present in all AVG editions):

disable Avg7Core
disable Avg7RsW
disable AvgClean
disable Avg7RsXP
disable AvgMfx86

5. RESTORE the User32.dll file from the Windows XP installation CD (instead "D:" use letter of your CD-ROM drive):

expand D:\i386\user32.dl_ c:\windows\system32\

In case the command fails, please use the following command to rename original user32.dll and repeat the command above.

ren user32.dll user32.bak

6. Restart computer and boot Windows normally.

7. In order to re-enable the AVG Resident Shield services we recommend that you perform the AVG repair installation as follows:

- Download the latest AVG installation package (AVG Anti-Virus Free 8.0) from the following webpage and save it on your hard disk:

http://free.avg.com/download?prd=afe
(AVG Anti-Virus Free 8.0)

- Click on the "Download AVG Free 8.0" link to download the installation file.

- When you are prompted, please do not open this file directly from the internet, but click the Save button and choose a location, where the installation file should be stored. We recommend saving the file to the Desktop.
- Restart your computer.
- Locate the downloaded AVG installation file (it has a four color square icon and its name starts with AVG_Free...) and launch the installation by double-clicking on it.
- Follow the installation wizard.
- Restart your computer and update AVG.

Solve : pc's battery?

what happens if i take out the battery on my dell inspiron e1505 , laptop . and plug it directly into a outlet . will it damage the pc. thanks. Probably not, but why do you want to do this?

because i think my battery is dead. and the bottom on the laptop gets REALLY HOT . dont know if is because of the battery. thats why. just wondering. No the heat's not a symptom of a battery problem...all laptops generate heat from the bottom...but u dont want to leave a laptop on a SURFACE that would insulate that heat..like on a bed or w/e... for a long period of time. As for the battery, that's not necessarry at all. Just recharge it while it's still PLUGGED into your laptop...that's what they're made for.

Solve : XP or Vista and then to MS 7 - What to chose??

Answer»

Please excuse my English, I am Dutch living in France.

My knowledge of HW & SW is average.

I just started my company in France (in and export). I need to change my 5 years old laptop IBM R50e and decided to buy a Mac Book (for traveling). At my home office I want to use this Mac Book as a “docking station” with a separate keyboard and large screen.

I will use my Mac Book then for business purposes: database (Outlook based) and MS office. For private use I only use Picasa to place our pictures on Google.

My old IBM laptop will be used by my SON of 7 years. For my new Mac Book I need to install, before I can buy the new MS OS 7, an OS. My question is. Which one should I install XP or Vista? Would you please be so kind to recommend me? Thank you.

With kind regards,
Wouter
For a five year old laptop I would recommend XP or 2000 professional.Thank you for your answer. Perhaps I did not express myself well. The XP or Vista is not for my old IBM laptop, which runs already XP prof, but for my new to buy Mac Book. I will, when MS7 comes available, MS 7. So I like to know is it better to install XP or Vista on my new laptop Mac Book.

Thank you

you can't install it over XP. you can do a clean install over XP... but that PRECLUDES any uninstall.Thank you BC_Programmer.

My only question would be if you want to run Windows why did you buy a MacBook ? ?

yes, an intriguing viewpoint. One would expect to run OS X on most of them.Thank you. To answer your question: price / quality. Living in Europe we, my friend who knows more about computers and I, searched the internet for a good price / quality laptop: HP, Asus, IBM etc. After comparing prices and performance the Mac Book came out best. Also Apple seem to have the latest technology when it comes to screen quality and enenrgy performances.

Since one can, without any problem, run Windows on a Mac Book I made the decision. Also it seems to be easy, when viruses are attacking through windows; I easily can change to Mac.

I hope my choice was the right one. Now my choice is … which OS – XP or Vista
XP ALTHOUGH the logical first choice will probably do fine on there...although a quick search of running Windows on the MacBook shows mostly success there are some headaches to be expected.
To choose Vista you need to consider the laptop specs...1G RAM would be minimum with Vista with anything more being a bonus.
Also you need to consider which flavor of Vista as there are 9 or 10 of them would SUIT your needs...with XP it's simple...XP Pro.

You'll want to enable WPA2 (TKIP + AES or AES). If some devices in your wireless network do not support this encryption, you will want to replace them.

When you're rebuilding your network you have to reconfigure all the devices and thus SIDESTEPPING the problem of one device not working.

WEP is not secure. I'd show you why, but it'd get me banned ..... ! All way over my head all this WPA2 etc.

I have left my old Compaq Presario off during the winter. Upon my RETURN the computer will start up as usual except for this year. Now the screen will show the "Compaq" name and then GOES to M/S Windows ME and then goes dark and returns to the "Compaq" screen. This repeats over and over. The escape button on the keyboard does cause the screen to go blank, but then it goes back into the cycle again. There is no cursor on any of the screens and nothing else on the keyboard appears to work.

ThanksDid you try to start in Safe Mode?Yesand??nothing changed after I started in safe mode.Try 2 things:
Replace the CMOS battery...part # CR2032 available at any PC shop or Wally World.
Borrow a known working Power Supply of the same wattage or greater and swap it in there to see if it boots properly.

Chances are it's #2.I will check these and get back to you. I LIVE in a remote area so it may TAKE a few days to get a battery.

ThanksI replaced the battery and restarted the PC in safe mode. It still gets to the "Microsoft Windows ME" screen and will go no further. ALSO, the computer does not cycle from the W/S Windows ME screen to the Compaq screen any more. It starts with the Compaq screen and then goes to the Windows ME screen and no further.

Solve : Cant load XP as computer continually reboots itself....Help!!! Please!!!?

Answer»

Hi there
I have a problem with my laptop, when I SWITCH it on it would not load XP it just continually reboots its self
. I have just tried the F8 button to stop it continually rebooting and have the following message on a blue screen:

UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

the techinical information is:

***STOP: 0x000000ED (0x84F83908,0xC0000006,0x00000000,0x00000000)

Your help would be greatly APPRECIATED

JeffFor unmountable boot volume, load the recovery console and type chkdsk /p and wait for it to finish and then do it again. Do it until it doesn't find any errors. Then do fixboot and fixmbr. Then you should be good.James, Iam not great with computers, how would I do this?

Many Thanks

Best of luck!In short, you'll boot from your XP CD and when it asks, press "r" to go into recovery console. Then it'll ask for your ADMIN password and then give you a prompt. That's where you'll enter the chkdsk /p, fixboot, and fixmbr commands. Also check out the page suggested above. Let us know if you have any more specific questions.

Solve : error all of a sudden?

Answer»

I keep my videos in My Documents/My Videos

All of a sudden, when i click on anything in that FOLDER, it crashes Windows Explorer. I did a VIRUS scan with no result.

I managed to move one of the videos to ANOTHER location ,and the same thing happened in that new folder when clicking on the video.

Any ideas? What video player are you using?
If you right click one of your videos does your computer crash?
Have you tried System Restore? Is Thumbnail view enabled in folder options ? ?
This will cause crashes if it's a big directory or they are mostly vid files...1.) Go to START-->RUN and type cmd to open a COMMAND prompt.
2.) Type regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll and HIT ENTER.

Solve : ccsvchst.exe?

Answer»

I have 46 processes running on task manaager, USING 538m/4722m, and growing. I'm trying to find out which ones of these I can delete, and how to delete them permanently. I'm going to try to do 2 a day.

The current question is ccsvchst.exe. And is there software I can buy which will do this for me, that I can trust?Hello! Welcome to CH!
With regards to your problem, I think you have an infection. But to be sure, read this and wait for a competent OP. Here: Malware RemovalThanks, JerryHeavyArms. I doubt I'm infected, because I have an updated Norton scanning regularly,

BUT I followed the links anyway, and found more good information than I can handle all at once.

The info I took away this goround was that Windows Defender is a legit antispyware, and that has replaced my Webroot, which expired last week.

And I thank you for leading me to that, and I'll be back. Happy Holidays & best wishes.ccsvchst.exe is a part of Norton. http://www.processlibrary.com/directory/files/ccsvchst/

Poll posted on Dec 21, 2008What, need us to do your homework? Oh joy....another one......

Do a search; you'll FIND many polls on this topic. There aren't enough choices in the list....Where can I get a banner that GOES 'Internet Explorer user'? Why not have it made from the User that does'nt take his own Sig advice ? ?

It's a START at least. It says what OS EVERY user has (if they have it filled out, and most people do) under their profile picture on every single post.
