Solve : problem trying to get boot menu?

Answer»

Hey guys, a BUDDIES computer, trying to reformat, set to boot to cd, then i get this error message "
file\minint\system32\biosinfo.inf COULD not be loaded
setup cannot continue. error code 14
how do i fix this .
thanks
Maybe a bad CD?
Or weak CD-Drive?
Weak Power supply?
Lots of noise getting into the cables?

I have got around this kind of thing during installation by USING another CD-Drive. In one case I made a clone copy of the weak CD onto a new CD-R and the new copy worked FINE! Does not sound logical from the analog viewpoint. But when it works, it works!yeah, thanks, it was dirty cd. LOL.

Solve : automatic shutdown in Win XP?

Answer»

About a month ago we recently had some unexplained power outages (5 in all) over a period of 3 days. ince the LAST outage my sstem will just power off for no reason usually while on the internet or using an application. Games don't seem to be a problem. Here are my system SPECS:

AMD 5600+ X2 Dual Core processor
ECS 6100 SM-M motherboard with NVidia Graphics built in
Windows XP
2 GB MemoryPower supply could be stressed from surges...have you swapped power supplies yet?

Does it show a shutdown PROCESS or just black screen and off? What BRAND and wattage is your PSU ? ?
You may also want to replace the surge suppresser as they are usually good for only a few hits.Dave you're speedin up in your old age....beat me to it !The PSU is an Antec 500WHow old ? ?The computer itself has been upgraded last year from a P4 2.8Ghz with 1 GB memory and I had that one for 2 yrs. So about 3 years old. By chance is there a PCI modem card in this machine ? ?
If so remove it and try it without.
Have you tried a new power strip and or moved the machine over to another outlet ?I believe it is a board issue since the computer works great when playing games just not so when it is working in Windows or a MS applicationQuote from: computerfrk1 on January 06, 2009, 08:17:53 PM

I believe it is a board issue since the computer works great when playing games just not so when it is working in Windows or a MS application
This could also point to a Windows issue...no ?Thought so too so I reformatted and that did not work...went to the store and bought a power supply and a new MOBO will try power supply first then the board I also wondered about a HDD failure...is this a possibility?Best way to find out is travel to the drive manuf. site and DLoad their FREE diagnostics...
Follow the instructions for creating a bootable CD and run the long test...
This will tell if the drive can be trusted,

Solve : want to reload win xp os?

Answer»

i dont have administrator priviledges and because I C an only get in through the Guest account, I cant even go into the boot mode and change it to where it boots from the CD..

Any suggestions on how I can load a fresh copy of windows. i have the CD
you can't.

however-

since your obviously reinstalling everything anyway- you'll want to clear the BIOS password evidently set. I won't go so far as to spell it out, but the memory storing the password is kept REFRESHED by a small battery on the motherboard. if it was to be removed for a while there's is a chance the BIOS would revert to defaults.

moderators: feel FREE, of course, to edit this post if you feel I've gone to far.The computer is mine, I bought it at a yard sale. The previous who owned it had set up an administrator password which obviously I didnt know. So I COULD only get in through the guest account, which didnt let me download and install programs like ADOBE and stuff because I didnt have administrator privileges.

If it is permissible by the moderators, can I tell you guys how I disabled the passwords?

It is definitely useful info, of course it can be used the wrong way, but then Einstein still revealed his find of atomic energy didnt he?

Moderators let me know if I can post it

there's no need. There is a simple, well-known way of removing BIOS passwords; not a ground-breaking paper on relativity theory.

the question inevitably arises, then, why we don't convey such information to all who pass by. It's actually quite simple; since this is a publically available forum, anybody can access it, and t hus anybody can request help. However, this includes persons dealing with "hot" hardware. Since we cannot actually see the people on the other side, we have to be wary how we vend any information, especially that dealing with working around any security within machines. Of course, there will be legitimate requests for such information (as I believe, myself, to be your case), but we can NEVER be sure wether or wether or not they are legitimate. I hope this clears it up.

Good to hear your back in business! I assume your going to be reinstalling your OS, then? If you need help with that, we'll be here Okay, thanks for letting me know. Anyways I have my computer back up and runing now. Thanks for your help

Solve : Help; windows won't load.?

Answer»

Hi there just wondered iaf anyone could help with this problem.

Our laptop (running XP) is REFUSING to work.

When the computer is turned on we get a black screen saying windows didn't start succesfully due to a possible recent hardware or software change. There are five options; 3 go into safe mode, one start normally, one last known good configuration.

However whichever one you choose windows tries to load but the goes to a bluescreen: Says to unistall any antivirus, disk defragmentation, backup utilities, check your hard configuration and check for any updated drivers. Run CHKDSK /F to check for harddrive corruption, and then restart your computer.

Technical information: *** STOP: 0x00000024 (0x00190203, 0x84B54848, 0C0000102, 0x00000000)

The blue screen only stays on the screen for about 2 seconds then we go back to the black screen and the whole process repeats.

Before the last time I shutdown the computer I removed some programs and RAN scandisk, so am presuming that this has something to do with it.

Any help would me much appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Herbiedog,

The 0x00000024 part is telling you that you almost certainly have a problem with NTFS.SYS, and without that file working, there is no way you will get your computer to run.

I'd first try booting the computer directly from the Windows XP cd, if you have one. When Windows Setup starts, choose the option to repair an existing installation, and FOLLOW it from there. Unfortunately I can't remember the sequence very clearly, but you will need to select any option which offers to repair your system files. You can find more info at the Microsoft website.

Ok thanks I'll give that a try. Will this erase any of the stuff on the hard drive? Windows repair won't erase any personal files, or programs.
Windows repair DEALS with system files ONLY.
Manual: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htmSo I've found the XP installation CD, so i just put it in the cd drive, turn on the computer and follow the instructions?Yes.
I would read thru them completely and also print out a copy for reference.
If this is done correctly all your programs and data will be intact...
If done incorrectly all your data will be gone but you will have a fresh install of XP.

This is why it's important to make sure you understand the instructions.Ok so I've attempted to do what the guide (http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm) says. I can do the steps up to 4, but for 5 I don't get an option to repair an xp installation, instead I get:

The following list shows the existing partitions and unpartioned space on this computer.
Use the up and down arrow keys to select am item in the list.
-To set up Windows XP on the selected item press, press enter.
-to create a partition in the unpartitioned space, press c.
-to delete the selected partition, press d.

73617 MB Disk 0 at Id 0 on bus 0 on repair [MBR]
C: Partition 1 [Unknown] 76317 MB (76317 MB free)

So do I need to press enter and then will get the repair option.
I only ask because the guide tells you to exit if you don't get the option to repair, and I don't really want to lose all my data.

Thanks in advance.Quote

If Repair is not one of the options, END setup. After the reboot read Warning#2!
Something you have attempted prior to this has crippled your XP install and/or wiped your data.
If the repair install does not show an existing XP installation to fix than your data is severely corrupted and/or gone.

Recovery Console Guide

These are Microsofts instructions on using the Recovery Console to try and repair a corrupt XP install.
The 2 commands you want to run are fixboot and fixmbr.
You will need an XP CD for this...your laptop CD won't work.

Once you have loaded the RC ( it will be a command-prompt black screen ) at the prompt type in fixboot and HIT Enter.
Remove the CD and re-boot.
If the machine still does not boot up repeat the instructions to load the Recovery Console but at the prompt this time type in fixmbr and hit Enter...you will recieve a Warning...choose Y or the yes prompt.
Again remove the CD and re-boot.

If neither of these get the laptop back to where it will at least start then the another option is to get one of these:

This is a laptop to IDE adapter. You use it to hook up the laptop drive to a desktop as a slave to see if you can retrieve/copy and burn your data to CD/DVD.

It may be time to start considering a regular backup strategy. Unfortunately you are already at this point but i wish you the Best of Luck.I've found this http://ascent.co.nz/productspecification.aspx?ItemID=352876 but I'm not sure if it's the correct thing. I've got the hard drive out of the laptop; it has two rows of pins, 4 in a square at the one end and then 43 others. I also have an attatchment that goes on to the 43 pins.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Solve : Lost programme?

Answer»

Just recently a friend of MINE replaced the hard drive on my pc to give me more space. I originally had windows XP and Office 97 ALREADY installed, as the PC was GIVEN to me by someone who was "upgrading", but now find I have not got Office 97. I am not sure what to do about this. Any suggestions anyone ?I don't think you can get Office 97 anymore.

If you WANT Microsoft Office (I prefer MS Office 2003 instead of 2007 because of the TOOL and program layout), you will have to buy it....or: http://www.openoffice.org/ - freeWhoops, forgot that.

Solve : Backup Files - Are these files compressed - Unknown Filetype?

Answer»

Hello,

I recently backed up my computer files to DVD (5 DVDs . . . 5 hours . . . 15 thousand files). I was assuming I would find the backed up files to be represented as they were on my computer. For instance: WORD documents have the extension ".doc" and ADOBE files have the extension ".pdf". These file LISTINGS also include the graphic symbol for that particular file type.

Here is my problem: All 15 thousand files on the BACKUP disk are of the same file type. No extension is shown and they all have the same graphic symbol. However, the variety of file sizes suggests the backup was successful. How do I decipher these files? Are they compressed? What am I looking at? Are these recoverable files? Ask, ask, ask, ask . . .

FrustratedHow did you back them up?

Can you describe this....symbol?They would need to be read by the backup app itself...
DECENT backup/image apps do not change file extensions so try opening them with whatever app that was...
What app was it ? ? We thrive on details here...they're like Cheerios to us. Hmmm . . . I backed up using NORTON UTILITIES. Does that shed any light?

AGPYou mean Norton GoBack ? ?To me it sounds like your backup took a image of your hard drive and than chunked it into the same size parts. After which it burnt it all to CDs.

Think of it like taking a big file and chopping it into parts like using winrar.

I have never done a backup before and was assuming I could simply fetch a file (or maybe 2 files) directly from the backup disk. Let's say, an MP3 file that I want to listen to. Is this not how backups WORK? Do I need to run the 5 disks through another application to get usable files?

AGPYes.
Check the Help files on ACCESSING individual files from the images...
I use and recommend Acronis True Image which when ran will show all files/folders as they normally would appear in Explorer and can be read/copied/retrieved individually...Thank's. I'll give it a try.

Solve : Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close.?

Answer»

I am using a Toshiba Laptop with windows xp home EDITION 2002. 0.99GB of RAM. I have two accounts on this laptop. A "guest" account which I rarely use and then my main account which requires a password and has admin privileges. The other day I noticed every time I tried opening Mozilla, my whole computer would FREEZE up and nothing would happen. So I would turn the computer off and log back on and use internet explorer instead. The next time I logged-in to my admin account the desktop loaded fine except the bottom tool bar and start menu. Then I got a NOTICE "windows explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close" This is what came up when I clicked on the tech. support:

C:\DOCUME~1\Beckyy\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER0384.diroo\explorer.exe.mdmp
&
C:\DOCUME~1\Beckyy\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER0384.diroo\appcompat.txt

I hadn't tried installing anything before this occurred and haven't really gone to any websites that I've never been to before. Please help. I'm not sure how I can do a system reboot or reset since I can't access my start menu. When I go on my "guest" account none of this pops up and there seems to be no problem but since the guest account doesn't have admin privileges I can't do any rebooting from there. Last night I downloaded AVG Anti-Virus scan. Not very computer savvy. CTRL+ALT+DEL to open Task Manager, click on "New task" button, type in:
sfc /scannow
Click OK.
Have Windows CD handy.
If System File Checker (sfc) will find any ERRORS, it may ask you for the CD/DVD.
If sfc won't find any errors in Windows XP, it'll simply quit, without any message.
Thank you for your help. However, the sfc/ scannow was not recognized and then the computer started slowing down and froze up. Not sure what to do now. I have a feeling it has something to do with internet explorer. Under the processes running there wasn't much up but explorer.exe was and I didn't have internet explorer open and it was using about 17,000 KIt looks like you have SERIOUS system files corruption.

Solve : WIN32 not valid error?

Answer»

I hope someone can help. Trying to download the software for itunes for a new ipod we GOT this error.

We have updated all windows apps. and have windows XP. Any fixes or PATCHES to help us with it?It is either the file you're trying to download are missing or corrupt. Is the software COMPATIBLE with your system? If yes. Delete and redownload, if you get the same error, try downloading from another site. Goodluck It may be also a sign of an infection. Thanks for the responses. The software is directly from apple.com, so i wouldn't think it was corrupt or had errors.

We do regular virus checks and clean ups too. Did you try to re-download it.
I assume, you're getting the error during installation, not download, RIGHT?Fantastic, thank you it worked!!!Very GOOD

Solve : PC will not boot up. Diskette 0 Seek Failure. NTLDR is missing.?

Answer»

FIY: I am using an old backup PC from home to access the forum right now.

Dell 3000 Window's v1.5 (I'm pretty sure)
Four years old.
SP3 512 RAM. All original equipment, nothing added no extra video cards so I can't ID the drive or board.

The folks in the spyware department taught me allot thus far:
I was trying to update to AVG free 8.0 (without first deleting 7.5) and was denied. I don't know where all my notes are for the message but its BASIC wording was, "AVG is detecting another anit-virus application--Kaspersky".

History: When I purchased the PC it came with the blasted Norton Symantec trial. I subsequently purchased the full model till I was completely disgusted with them. Long story short; before you guy's taught me how to obtain freeware and use it, three years ago I downloaded a trial of Kaspersky. I obtained tools from them to remove the trial and Broni taught me how to delete its components from the registry.

I ended up installing Avast (I didn't LIKE it). I also used SuperAntispyware, WinPatrol, LavaSoftSE, SpyBot S&D and COMODO Pro Free.
I do have the original Dell O/S CD. If we can get it booted up again you can see all the previous HiJackThis logs, one I ran about a month before the failure.

Last thing I was doing on my PC before it failed about three weeks ago was: I was letting Microsoft perform a scheduled update. I didn't restart immediately but waited 45 minutes before I left for work to shut down just like I'm ready to do right now. I don't know what the update was I just saw the update icon and bubble appear at the lower systray tray by the clock.

During attempted boot, the Dell screen appears and the flashing light bar on the screen stops. If I quickly hit F12 I get into the Boot Device Menu.

1. Normal sends me to the error message "Diskette 0 Seek Failure. NTLDR is missing.
2. Pri Master Dr. Same error message.
3. Hard Disk DR. C: Same ERR msg.
4. IDE-CD-ROM Device. If I press any key real quick I can open the Win O/S disk. I don't want to reinstall. I attempted a Repair (option two on the disk) It won't let me access I don't remember my admin password. Since I am the only user of the PC it has to be something simple or it doesn't remember it either. Someone told me to take out the BIOS battery for a HALF hour. Waiting on your advice.
5. Sys Setup. Allows me access but I don't really know what I'm LOOKING for.
6. IDE-Drive Diagnostic. It passed all the lengthy tests.
7. Boot to utility partition. Same err msg.

That's about it for now, I hope it was enough info to work with. Looking forward to hearing from you when I return from work.

T.

Try here: http://icrontic.com/articles/repair_windows_xpThanks for the article. The repair section of my o/s disk was where I once was. In my problem text I indicated I couldn't remember my admin passward. I spoke of removing the battery. Maybe I input my password in but it didn't recognize it??? Would Dell be able to remind me??? That might be my dumbest question of '09.

Is there a way of getting into that memory?? You may not want to reply to that question--I understand.

TomYou can try removing battery. It won't hurt anything.
With password, I can't help you, and Dell won't either.Thats cool about the paswd. I think I found some notes in my book that may help me remember it. I have to make room to power up the old PC next this old one so i can work as soon as I get the chance. That may be tomorrow or the next. I'll reply when I've achieved the next sucess. Don't forget me and thanks till I reply again.

TNo problem

Solve : I have a Compaq laptop?

Answer»

The laptop itself is 18 months old, and was running win XP. She said she has been using it for chatting and surfing. Anyway, one day when she tried to turn it back on, it just kept cycling between power on (The power light came on and the fan came on) and power off. There is no display on the screen at all.

I tried to reboot it with a win xp disk, but whenever i press the power button, the laptop comes on for a while and it seems like in addition to the fan, the disk is also being read (flashing light on disk drive). But the laptop turns off shortly thereafter without any display.

What do you guys think is the problem?
Is this with the battery in it? And, running on just battery power or with the AC adapter plugged in? You might try removing the battery and running it directly off the AC adapter.Sage,

Okay I tried it, battery out and AC plugged in. Nothing, the same thing as before. I cant even get safe mode or anything. There is absolutely nothing that happens, only the power light comes on, fan comes on, and then 30 seconds later, they both turn off. Then it repeats again.

What else could be the matter
It has a one year warranty, I PRESUME. Right? yes it does but it is 18 months old now. I also reseated the rAM but no luck. The AC adaptor works fine. Why is the darn thing not working?
I don't know but it clearly seems to be a hardware problem, not a software problem. Is the memory the original memory in that computer?

Quote

one day when she tried to turn it back on, it just kept cycling between power on (The power light came on and the fan came on) and power off.
So, how long did this go on? How did she stop it?it didnt stop, its still going on, the cycling
Whoa! All this time! I'd remove the battery, if it's in the computer now, and pull the PLUG to remove all power to the computer.

UNLESS someone else here can suggest otherwise, I think your only option is to take it to a repair shop. I'd certainly ask for an estimate of cost. You don't want any big surprises when you get the bill for repair WORK performed. You might conclude it's not worth the cost. The motherboard is bad. I did what they said on the compaq site to fix it, and they said if nothing works, its the motherboard thats bad, and that is something only a compaq person can fix cause they make proprietary stuff only. Anyways thats that.
Well, that's a real bummer. I gather you're not the primary user. Do you know how she normally uses the computer? Any chance user habits might have contributed to the pre-mature demise of that computer? mainly she said she just uses it to surf the net and to chat with people. But for something major like the computer not staying on continuously , she must have done something like drop it. Could be wrong, but what else could make a computer keep cycling from on to off by itself?
Yes, some kind of accidental or unknowing abuse seems likely. Extreme shock, such as dropping it, could be a cause. And, some people have RUINED laptops by spilling liquid on them. I guess you'd know about that if it happened.oh well, thanks for helping out

Haha you guys are hilarious.

If I were to get an extra fan, would I just LIKE mount it to the casing somewhere or something?Look at the back of your computer. You may find an empty screen, ready for installing extra fan.

Haha, I looked, and I've already got a fan there XDPost some pics of your case...Here you go...

PLENTY of room for fans...I'm not able to get any pics up right now, seeing as I don't have access to a camera of any SORT... but I'm just wondering...

My computer has been going really slow ever since I messed around with the insides.
I don't think/know if I touched anything and messed it up, but my computer has not been responding normally.

It is going ridiculously slow; slower than normal, and definitely slower than it should be with my specs. I even reformatted, because of it being so slow, and it still seems to have a problem. I don't know what the problem could be, but I'd really like to sort it out.

any ideas? You may have unseated one of your memory modules.
Right Click on My Computer and select properties. How much memory is listed there? If the memory count doesn't look right, reseat your RAM.Yeah, I took out some of the hardware, and just put it back in, it's fine now.

OMG, Everytime I fix something, something else comes back...

Now SpeedFan says my CPU temp is 90, when a couple DAYS ago it said like 36 or something... hmm, will I have to re-apply the paste, when I did it just last week?Okay... now the temp says it's at like 38 degrees, so maybe it was just a glitch or something, that was yesterday, and I've turned off my computer since then. How is computer doing OVERALL?Pretty good. It's doing fine right now. I'm gonna take some pics of the case soon and post them, see if I can fit a fan anywhere XDOK.

Solve : Desktop icons aren't showing alpha...?

Answer»

I've been trying to solve this for quite some time- nothing I try appears to work.

The problem is none of the icons on my desktop are being displayed with their alpha channel. A picture is worth a thousand words, THOUGH:

Actions I've taken:

used tweakui to rebuild the icon cache

deleted all non-shortcut FILES from desktop folder.

deleted shelliconcache

changed the display resolution and colours back and forth between different settings...

the problem persists, however. Strangely, everything else- start menus, explorer windows, etc, shows icons with their proper alpha intact.

Any suggestions?

Alpha icons stillCheck here: http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt-2000-xp/689787-icons-not-see-through-did.htmlThanks! All is well again! it was for a bit; but then it came back. Luckily, I figured out exactly what was causing my issue; It's so simple it's ridiculous.

I was using a PNG image for the background; that was all. apparently when using a PNG baclground you cannot have any icons shown with alpha. seems a bit dumb, but that's an EASY fix.Interesting....more like annoying. Now I have to convert all the pictures in the "kinky goats" folders to a different format! 12,000 images will probably take a long time to convert to jpg

Take your time....LOLwhich reminds me, I BETTER tell Dias of this new information! He'll be crushed when he learned he can't have his favourite ewe as his wallpaper without losing alpha.

Solve : Recovering registry and application programs from corrupted hard drive?

Answer»

Im a NEWBIE to this forum and am hoping members can help.

My neighbour's PC has 2 partitions, one for WINDOWS XP and application programs (system partition), the other for his data (data partition).
When he boots his system, Windows XP gets as far as his desktop.
HOWEVER his usual desktop does not appear, he gets an empty blue screen. His mouse cursor can be moved across the screen and Ctrl Alt Del brings up task manager.
I've removed his hard drive and connected it to a second bus on my desktop PC, copied the contents of his second (data) partition to my PC's external hard drive. I also copied as much of his hard drive's first (system) partition as possible onto my PC's external hard drive.
My plan is to replace his hard drive in his PC and reinstall Windows.
I'd like to avoid having to re-install all his application programs by copying back his Progam Files folder and his registry entities.
But Windows Explorer seems to hide all the registry entities from the end used.

Please is there any advice out there on how to get his Application programs running again without having to reinstall them?

Many thanks in advance.
MikeSimply copying the Applications to the machine will not work...they have to be re-installed.
Here is a program that STATES it can do it but i have not tested it yet...
Trial Version...10 tries and it's done.If I remember correctly Partition Magic used to have a utility built in that did the same thing. It's been so long since I've use it though...

From the description of Application Mover iit does not appear to move or copy the registry. If that is so it won't help solve my neighbour's problem. Also it is the registry on my Neighbour's HDD that I want to backup & restore.
I know that Linux Ubuntu 8.04.1 can read from and write to NTFS filesystems and may be able to handle files not accessable by Window XP Explorer. However Ubuntu will not run on my desktop as it has a VIA motherboard. I'll try another distro such as Fedora 10 after I've downloaded and burnt the ISO file.Quote from: ale52 on January 13, 2009, 07:25:54 AM
If I remember correctly Partition Magic used to have a utility built in that did the same thing. It's been so long since I've use it though...

There's nothing like that on my version of Partition Magic 8.0.

Solve : Questions re clean install of windows xp home?

Answer»

Hello! My Mothers computer needs to be wiped clean and windows xp home reinstalled. She has many issues REGARDING missing files, errors, collected junk and CANT even access the help files or update correctly anymore.
My thought is to do a clean install. I tried repairing but no dice. MOM has alot of family history info and some games, the usual for a barely used home computer, however the hard disk has c: with her current info and then E: (I think its e anyway) which was done by the computer store when she bought this computer a few years ago. They just copied all the stuff from her old computer to this PARTITION. In any case, She is terrified that I will lose some of her "stuff" even thought most of it needs to be removed anyway.

Can anyone tell me what is the best, easiest, safest, way to go about saving her data and programs.

I guess a possibility is just networking it to my computer, saving it all on mine and then just dumping it back onto hers. Is that a possibility? I really need to spend the time to clean out all the crap that's just not pessary.

Hmm...
Thanks in advance for any help or advice!

If the computer has problems, than an image might not be a good idea.

The best course would be to get any storage device (like another computer or external hard drive) and copy all her important files (anything she wants to save) except any programs in Program File.

If you copy Program File, you will not only be wasting time, but space as well because they will have to be reinstalled again.Quote

Can anyone tell me what is the best, easiest, safest, way to go about saving her data and programs.
Pay attention to what CO2 said. Best idea is another storage device.

A USB external drive may seem to be the easy way. And it is a good choice. Most USB externals are just IDE drives with a USB adapter.

If you have any experience with the inside of a computer, just buy her a new drive. Gently remove the old one and set it aside. Do a fresh install on the new drive. Take former drive with here stuff on it over to you computer and retrieve as much as you can. A IDE to USB external case would be an easy way to hook it to your machine. You can retrieve some of the settings, but not the application programs. They have to be installed from the original CD, just like the Windows OS. Keep the old drive around for awhile, just in case you forgot something.
Ans yes, you can send anything over an local network connection, but you still have to install the programs.

The cost of IDE drives is now about as LOW as it can be for drives under 120 GB, but avoid used drives. Buy a new one.

Solve : Automating text files?

Answer»

I need to automate a text file to split on a certain line into two new files multiple times a day.

Example:

exampletext.txt
line 1
line 2
line 3
line 4
line 5

exampletext1.txt
line 1
line 2
line 3

exampletext2.txt
line 4
line 5

I'm not sure what the best method to do this is, whether to use a batch file or if there is a program already out there.

Off topic: I APOLOGIZE if this is in the wrong location, or has been posted before. I searched and couldn't find anything.Welcome to the CH forums.

I'm not sure if the following code is the 'best' method, no doubt one of the scripting gurus will do better..

Code: [Select]@echo off
setlocal enabledelayedexpansion
cls
set a=1

if exist exampletext1.txt del exampletext1.txt
if exist exampletext2.txt del exampletext2.txt

for /f "delims=*" %%A in (exampletext.txt) do (
echo %%A >> exampletext1.txt
set /a a=!a!+1
if !a! equ 4 GOTO second
)

:second
for /f "delims=* skip=3" %%A in (exampletext.txt) do (
echo %%A >> exampletext2.txt
)

echo Exampletext1.txt =
type exampletext1.txt
echo.
echo Exampletest2.txt =
type exampletext2.txt

Good luck
Thanks for the reply, is that the code i should use for a batch file?Yes, but you have to change the paths\filenames to the actual ones you use and, if you wish, remove the final few lines which display the output file contents.

Ok thanks, i don't really need it to display anything, I just need the files converted so another program can read them. Also where in there can i specify the line break.I thought you wanted to always split the file after line 3. Below is another version which will allow you to specify how MANY lines are to be copied into the first file.

Save the script somewhere in your path as filename.bat and when you invoke it specify how many lines are to be copied to the first file. e.g. entering "filename 6" (without the "") will split the INPUT file after line 6. Note that if the entered value is not a valid number greater than 0 (zero) then all lines will be copied to the first output file.

Code: [Select]@echo off
setlocal enabledelayedexpansion
cls

set a=0
set skip=%1

if exist exampletext1.txt del exampletext1.txt
if exist exampletext2.txt del exampletext2.txt

for /f "delims=*" %%A in (exampletext.txt) do (
echo %%A >> exampletext1.txt
set /a a+=1
if !a! equ !skip! goto second
)

:second
for /f "delims=* skip=%skip%" %%A in (exampletext.txt) do (
echo %%A >> exampletext2.txt

)
set skip=

echo Exampletext1.txt =
type exampletext1.txt
echo.
echo Exampletest2.txt =
type exampletext2.txt

I gave it a shot and it isn't working for me. More than likely I'm doing something wrong. I have all these saved in the directory C:\batchtest

programschedule.bat
Code: [Select]@echo off
setlocal enabledelayedexpansion
cls

set a=0
set skip=%1

if exist C:\batchtest\ps1.txt
if exist C:\batchtest\ps2.txt

for /f "delims=*" %%A in (C:\batchtest\ps.txt) do (
echo %%A >> C:\batchtest\ps1.txt
set /a a+=1
if !a! equ !skip! goto second
)

:second
for /f "delims=* skip=%skip%" %%A in (C:\batchtest\ps.txt) do (
echo %%A >> C:\batchtest\ps2.txt

)
set skip=

echo C:\batchtest\ps1.txt =
type C:\batchtest\ps1.txt
echo.
echo C:\batchtest\ps2.txt =
type C:\batchtest\ps2.txt
initiate.bat
Code: [Select]call C:\batchtest\programschedule 14This is the file that i will use to start programschedule.bat and specify the line to cut. Ideally I will have this set to run every 30 minutes.

Solve : PLEASE HELP THIS BLONDE BIMBO WITH WINDOWS INSTALLER PROBLEM!!?

Answer» EVERY time I am on the internet, the "WINDOWS INSTALLER" box pops on and off with a statement in the box "preparing to install", but doesnt say what it's installing and if I hit cancel, it just comes back, every few minutes.
If I TRY to add/remove programs, I get a message "The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode or Windows Installer is not correctly installed".
I dont know what to do, I downloaded the Windows Installer 3.1 but that DIDNT help. I dont know what I need to delete, and how can I delete anything if I cant find what I need to delete and it wont let me delete anything off of "add/remove programs"?
Also, I notice under programs, I somehow installed TWO Windows Installer 3.1's. both with a KB start letters, but different numbers. Cant even fix that!
Dont know where to start or what to do!!!! HELP PLEASE!
God Bless.
p.s. i have run CC Cleaner every which way I can, to try to fix it-both parts, the Cleaner and the Registry things. hit "fix issues" on anything that showed up on Registry.
i have run Webroot Spy Sweeper-no viruses.
i downloaded ADAWARE, but it wont run because it cant be totally installed because my Windows Installer aint working!!!
ARGH!
p.s.s. i cant run defrag/cleanup disk maintenance cuz i have so much stuff taking up memory in the computer (mostly pictures), and i did buy CARBONITE, a virtual hard drive, which backed up everything, but am afraid to delete my pictures from "MY PICTURES" because i just dont trust anything..so i KNOW i am low on space, but will try to have the guts to delete all my pics hogging up memory eventuallyI had the same thing happen to me once, and I couldnt even uninstall the windows installer as it said uninstall file not found. The way I fixed this was to find the windows installer utility online, google or yahoo SEARCH. I then installed it again, and then I was able to uninstall it. Solve : My computer will not let me delete any files??

Answer»

Anytime I try to send files to the recycling bin, an error message pops up that says this:

An unexpected error is preventing the operation. Make a note of this error code, which might be useful if you get additional help to resolve this problem:

Error 0x80070570: The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable.

I tried deleting the files in Safemode, but the same error message popped up. All files on the computer, at least the ones that I have tried, will not DELETE. Pictures, VIDEOS, Word Documents, Programs and Files, etc. Only one program deleted. The others will not. I need this problem resolved because my hard drive is almost full. The only way I can delete files is if I go to youtube, click upload video, click browse, go to my videos, and right click and delete. It's very strange. But doing it on youtube is tedious, and I can only delete each individual file on at a time. Have you checked your drives for ERRORS, and RUN a virus check? No, I have not.
the only thing I have done is restart the computer, do startup repair. That had no effect. I also tried deleting it in safe mode, this did not work. I also get a message that says
"The file or directory C:\$Secure is corrupt and unreadable. Please run chkdsk utility"
when I shut my computer down. I suspect the two are related, I have gotten this error message before.
I am not sure how to do what you suggest.Try slecting the file and PRESS shift+delete.
Do you have any virus protection?
Did you run chkdisk?OH MY GOSH YOU ARE A FREAKING LIFE SAVER.

the shift delete worked on videos and pics, however it does not work on programs and files.

i am not sure how to run a check disk.If you want to delete programs go into Control Panel and select Add/Remove programs.

Do you have any virus protection?

Try doing this: Click start then select My Computer. Right click on your C drive and select Properties. You should now be at this screen:

Now Select Disk Cleanup and let it clean up all of the unnecessary files on your computer. Once you have done that, Click the Tools tab near the top of the properties window. You should now see this screen:

Here, choose Defragment now. This will open the disk defragmenter. Click on Analyze. If your computer needs defragged you will see a message that says you need to defragment. If so, choose defragment now. This may take some time. Just be patient. Now go back here

and select Check Now. This will schedule chkdisk to run at the next restart. Go ahead and restart and see if it finds anything.

Solve : WinXP reinstallation *censored*.?

Answer»

I am trying to restore a Dell 8250. It is P4, 2.6ghz with 1gb ram. I am using a 320gb sata hard drive with a sata-eide adapter.

I downloaded and ran the Western Digital lifeguard program and it saw the drive with no problem, set it up and formatted the first 137gb.

Previously to all of this I contacted Dell and got the RECOVERY disks, they over-nighted them to me. (how cool is that?!)

Now comes the *censored*, I put in the CD and it appears to work, then it will freeze when it gets to "checking drive c:..." or it will freeze at "kernel debugger dll", or it will go past those and start copying files, at which point I get happy, and then files will either not be able to be copied or they will be copied incorrectly. Then I get a number of BSOD's: IRQL_not_less_or_equal, or, pagefault_in_non_paged_area, or, "a driver corrupted pool memory used for holding pages destined for disk".

I have looked these up and some sites say heat, some say memory, some say drivers (hard with no OS installed), others say go to recovery console and repair (no use, no OS).

I have removed modem and sound card, lowered memory to 512MB with memory place holders in the open slots, run dban, tried using nlite to install, even tried using a Win98 boot disk and Win2k install disks.

Now I come to you kind folks. Do I keep trying with your suggestions or should I just call it quits, part it out and put them on eBay?

ThanksPAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA, and IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, especially, when shown together, point to bad RAM.
What Windows version are you trying to reinstall? You get those BSODs after trying to install windows and skipping the files that wouldn't load right?
Either the CD is scratched or dirty. Or your CD drive is dirty. Do you have another CD drive that you can swap into that machine? The version is XP home with SP2.

No, the BSOD's don't come after skipping files, they come. They take turns making me miserable.

I have swapped out the memory, mixed and matched the 4 sticks that I am using and I still get the errors.

I cleaned the drive and the cd is as brand new as a recovery disk can be, I just opened the little paper envelope today. The other cd's are still sealed. I burned a new COPY of the nlite iso that I had and that disk had no dirt or scratches. There are two drives on the machine, a dvd and cdrw, both read cd's with no problems.Just a little bump.

Still unable to install XP home, same errors come up.

Just my 2cents from a recent experiance regarding install XP...
Is it possible the hard drive is bad? Can you connect it to ANTHER computer and CHECK it. That would exclude all the memory issues and such. I was experianceing semi weird xp install errors on a drive that I thought was good. Main issue was it would intll up to the restart and then loop back to the begining. I tried a bunch of programes and iso's but no luck in figuring the problem. After connecting to a secondary pc I found out it was the drive causing the problems. I RMA'd it to Seagate and just got it back today repaired. Knock on wood, I'm installing it now, we are formating now.

Anyway, Good luck! This is the second drive I using for the installation. The first kept me running in circles so I checked this one from the beginning. It is good, no bad sectors, reads the correct capacity during the install and in the bios.Since the errors point to RAM problem, and you changed the RAM in all possible ways, I'd suspect mobo.I will try a different motherboard this weekend and let you know how it goes. Thanks so far for the responses.Did this Dell ship from the factory with SATA hard drive(s) ? ?
If not you need Dell SATA drivers...the prompt for the SATA drivers comes very EARLY in the setup process but this will not happen if it was originally shipped with an IDE drive.Hi, not sure of the original type of drive. I got this from a Craig's List ad. The service tag brings up the original configuration and this is what is listed for the hard drive: HD,120G,I,7.2K,60G/P,HIT-VAN2

Hard drive
120gb
I - ?
7200rpm
60g/p - ?
HIT-VAN2 - ?

Thanks again.Where's the original drive ? ?
If it hooked up with a flat ribbon cable it was an IDE drive...which i would bet on since you are using a SATA adapter now...The original drive I would guess is with the original owner.

Makes sense about the type of drive it was.

Solve : Slow Boot-up?

Answer»

You probably want a verbose start-up, so you can read what it's doing.

If the start-up TIME suddenly increased by quite a bit, then Windows is obviously running a check on something (which passes).

I think some of your ways to reduce time-lag are really clutching at straws. If you are in a busy time right now, maybe just put up with the startup time until things are quieter for you. There is nothing wrong with a 2-minute start per se; just get up a minute earlier in the morning, and thus allow for it.

When you have the time, back up EVERYTHING onto DVDs (no matter how many), and definitely copy and save all your Application Data (for you and for All Users) off the computer. You might want to make an image of your system and save that too.
— When everything is clear, and you have all your e-mail files and everything else you want SAVED off the box, then use Maxtor's PowerMax to do a low-level format of your disk. You can do that with a DVD or a floppy. It can take hours.

PowerMax is free on the web, or use your Hiren's Boot CD.

When that is finished, you are given a guarantee that your disk is in factory-new condition. (That was the criteria test used for warranties.) Windows can't do such an intensive format as that.

Then use your Windows disk to set up several new partitions and to install your XP clean and new. Take a week or a month to set things up the way you like them. (Your APPDATA that you saved will give you back all your program settings, and of course if you copy back your entire Firefox directory as well as Mozilla in your AppData, you get Firefox back exactly as it was. Same thing with K-Meleon.)

Now you won't have to look for teensy differences in switching some of those settings off. You'll have a brand new computer.

XP installs last maybe one year. Oh, they can go for MUCH, much longer, but then you get these "things are working pretty slowly" complaints. Not only that, but the user is not likely to realize just how slow his system is—until he sets it up squeeky-clean and new again.

Good luck.i do it all but my computer is to slow to boot up

My gess is it looks on the Floppy Drive for the Operating System and System Files before moving to the Hard Drive or what ever Drive is in the Boot List.

And it finds the NTL.DR File on the Floppy and Loads that into MEMORY and then Loads Boot.ini and the NTDETECT.com

And my gess is that the Boot.ini File on the Floppy Disk tells the Computer to look on the Hard Drive for the Operating System and ware.

If you are getting into the boot sequence you best start by being precise. AFAIK there is no such file as NTL.DR, the NT loader is named NTLDR. If the file on your floppy is named NTL.DR then you are not booting from the floppy.

Otherwise your assumptions are correct, if all is in order the three files on your floppy will be used to load the operating system on your hard-drive. You can really test this by renaming NTLDR on your hard drive then booting from the hard drive. You should get an error message that "NTLDR missing" and the system will not boot. Then insert your floppy and boot from it, when the system is loaded reinstate NTLDR in C:

No. The three files on your floppy disk will allow you to load the operating system from your hard drive at any time provided you are booting from the floppy drive. These are boot files. If your core system files on the hard drive are corrupt the system will not load.

The boot process is shown here..

NTOSKRNL.EXE is described here.. There is no point in adding this to your floppy disk as the system looks for it on the hard drive only.

he never said otherwise I guess the $50 question is:
What are you trying to do?

A floppy with NTLDR, NTDETECT.COM, and boot.ini only helps in booting to a place that you can't get to otherwise.

If, say, those three files on your hard drive were jacked up somehow, then the floppy would help you get back into Windows. Well if NTLdr and NTDETEC.con and Boot.ini are not system Files what are System Files.

And what if your System Files ware bad can you put just the Core System Files on a Floppy?Quote from: killerb255 on January 14, 2009, 03:47:11 PM

If you are trying to ensure that you can recover your operating system files you can just install the recovery console on your hard drive. That way you wont have to worry about finding and booting to your boot disk.
When you install the recovery console onto your hard drive it will be one of your startup options and will not require the XP CD to run.

To do this: Log in as administrator and place your XP CD in your CD drive. If AUTORUN starts up, just CLICK no.
Now click start and then run and type the following:
d: \i386\winnt32 /cmdcons
If your CD drive uses another drive letter, substitute it for the D drive. Now just follow the instructions on the screen. If you are connected to the internet, allow the setup program to download updated files.

Now everytime you boot up the OS selection menu will show XP and the recovery console.

Hope that helps you. When you told me to type
d: \i386\winnt32 /cmdcons

Did you meen
d: \i386\winnt32 \cmdcons ??no, that's the right command.
Are you getting an error?

remember if your CD drive letter is something other than D you substitute that letter.

You might try putting the command in quotes
like this:

"d:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons"No I am not getting an error I just saw that the last Slash was / and the other Slashes ware \

Why are they all not \
When you are telling the computer what Directory to look in they all should be \ Right???in "d:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons" d:\i386\winnt32.exe is the program and directory while /cmdcons is a command to that program, thus it has a different slash. I believe hyphens are also interchangable with the / aswell?

yes.

have you perhaps heard of a command-line SWITCH?

@Bones92

the hyphen was the ORIGINAL switch character- it depends on the program wether you can use both. Most (all the XP commands, AFAIK) do.This may help you....

Solve : Vista corrupts XP drive on dual boot. Help!?

Answer»

(Edit:I have a feeling that Xp and Vista handle the NTFS format differently and is not compatible but i have seen systems work with both. If anyone knows of a better place to post this problem let me know please)

Problem: When I try to boot from my XP drive i get a 0x24 error on boot

through trial and error and many OS reinstallations I have found what causes the problem

here is what I have to work with
Dell m1730 4GB ram, Intel 2.4ghz core2, nvidia 8700gt sli, 120GB sata drive, 500GB after market sata drive

Vista is installed on the 120GB drive pre-installed by dell at the factory

500GB drive is from newegg.com and is for installing windows xp for duel boot

Steps I take to get error
0)Make all parts and bios settings like they were from factory
1)remove Vista drive from slot"A"
2)install XP drive into slot"A"
3)boot from XP installation disk
4)full format ntfs, install windows
5)run windows update until fully updated
6)move Xp drive to slot"B"
7)GO into bios and change boot priority to cdrom->slot"B"->slot"A"
8)Confirmed xp drive still boots
9)install vista drive into slot"A"
10)Confirmed xp drive still boots
11)press hotkey(F12) for boot options to boot slot"A"
12)Confirmed VISTA drive still boots
13)Confirmed xp drive still boots
14)boot into xp drive and access files in vista drive from xp boot
15)Confirmed vista drive still boots
16)boot into vista drive and access files in xp drive from vista boot
17)try to boot from xp drive and BOOM!! BSOD 0x00000024
18)Confirmed vista drive still boots
18)repeat steps 0-17
19)Confirmed that accessing the XP drive from Vista drive corrupts the xp drive so it will no longer boot

I would like to know if it is possible to scan/fix the xp drive so I don't have to reinstall xp again(I am quite tired and annoyed by this process)

Even better if there is a way to PREVENT vista from killing my xp drive but still able to access files from either drive from both OSes.

I did get a different error code once before but forgot to write it down so the 0x24 is not the only code just about 90% commonFrom MicrosoftQuote from: patio on January 16, 2009, 06:14:26 AM

From Microsoft

"You experience this problem if Windows Vista is installed in formerly UNALLOCATED disk space that existed in front of the partition on which Windows XP is installed."
This is a quote from the link you sent me.

My problem comes from separate hard drives with one partition each. My boot order is not controlled by boot.ini i am using the bios to choose a hard drive to boot from for each different OS

I think what i am LOOKING for is a GUIDE on how vista handles secondary drives but this is just another guess

This setup I am trying to use works just fine as long as I do not try to access documents from the xp drive when booted into the vista drive.

The moment I open the xp drive from vista to view files is the action the causes the xp drive to bsod on boot

Other side information that leads me to believe the problem is how vista handles NTFS on other drives is that when I install xp onto fat32 I get no problems, but fat32 is limited to 4GB file size and i have lots of >4GB files

Solve : HP desktop Windows XP, doesnt stay on?

Answer»

Got an HP desktop , which does turn on, boot up, works GREAT, but turns itself off every so often.

Why does it do that, and what should I need to do to fix it
Go to Control Panel/System/Advanced/Startup and Recovery and uncheck "auto-restart on errors"...
You will now get blue screen errors...post everything it says NEXT time it happens...patio,

I did that , I unchecked the box, but I DONT think that that was the reason for the intermittent shutdowns.

I think the problem is the power supply, I have tried a number of power cords with it, and for some reason the cord doesnt make good contact when I plug it into the back. My guess is that the prongs on the power supply are either too short, or have shifted back into the power supply CASE. Maybe thats why they dont make a good contact with the metal in the cord slots. (I am assuming the elements in the cord slots are all the way to the back and that the prongs need to extend all the way to make contact with them, dunno if this is the case).

The reason i think its faulty connection is cause when i wiggle the power cord a certain way, the computer comes on. Problem is the cord doesnt stay in that position. So is it possible to pull the prongs out further?
I would simply replace the PSU...an older machine shouldn't have huge power NEEDS so it wouldn't be that much of a layout of cash.ya i coulda done that, but actually it was just a matter of slightly bending the prongs of the power supply outward, so that they could hold the plug better. It works fine now, but youre right, if that didnt work i would just have gotten a new psu

Solve : BSODs have me at my wits ends?

Answer»

YES! I did it and it worked! I just did a McAfee scan and it made it all the way thru without a BSOD. That was the first completed McAfee scan since the middle of Dec.

The updating of the chipset drivers was a bit nerve racking. I BSOD’ed in the middle of the nVidia’s install wizard. Then Windows got a bit upset and kept flipping up little “I can’t finds” and “this can’t happen” error messages. Then McAfee realize I had turned it off and kicked in and started yelling “Wait you aren’t protected. You better stop right now if you know what’s good for you.” Luckily I had downloaded to my desktop so I just went back in and did it again. The second time thru it made all the way. But even at first in the beginning right when the wizard started and went full screen, then even it started complaining but politely or course, with a raised eyebrow, asked me if it would be okay if it just slipped down to the system taskbar while I took care of that unruly Windows Install Wizard that was trying to take over or would I like Ms nVidia Wizard to just cancel the whole thing.

At the tail end of the install there was this unnerving message from the wizard: “to install operating system onto SATA disks when RAID is enabled in the BIOS, you must do the following ----- use the “x” option with the package.exe to extract storage driver files. -----follow instructions for Windows F6 installations in “IDE\\driver\ReadMeF6.txt”.”

After the install finished and it rebooted I went searching for this ReadMeF6 file. Windows Explorer couldn’t find it, so neither could I. Then I tried to check in BIOS to see what it was showing for my RAID configuration but I couldn’t find my way thru BIOS to the right spot to check it so I finally called up the CyberPower Tech Support and luckily someone answered the phone on about the second ring. He walked me thru to the correct screen to verify that my Raid settings were still enabled and he also said if they weren’t I wouldn’t have been able to get into Windows with my raid 0 setting. He said that ReadMe file message would refer to a new installation of Windows, not just an update of the chipset driver.

Thank for listening to me work thru this mess and I hope no more BSOD. K
Okay, so I guess I was wrong I still have errors messages but at least not BSOD. I’ve got this message the 2 times I’ve logged on today. Any help on how to make it go away? The long verbage was after the error box that I copied out of the Details drop down box. I can’t really tell what to do to SOLVE it even with all that printout.

Would it be connected to my driver update last night? (if not, should I have started another thread with this problem?)

Or maybe it started because when I closed down last night Windows kicked in with auto updates. But, I went to the Windows site and all of the updates showed as green checked.

Both times I got this message I clicked on the Continue button.

Thanks for any help. K

ignore my last post. I googled the error message and it is a McAfee problem again. Strange, but they will fix it. KUpdate: I had a BSOD today when I logged on. And yesterday I had two Windows popup error messages one at logon and again at shutdown. They all seem to track back to McAfee files. So I uninstalled McAfee and then got a new download of it thru Comcast. I think maybe when Nvidia said to not run virus protection in the background they should have said UNINSTALL all virus protections. Or maybe McAfee got messed up by having the BSOD in the middle of the mobo chipset driver download, because as soon as I logged back in after being BSOD’ed McAfee was activated as one of my startup programs and was kicking out messages of being unprotected.

Anyway, after the new install of McAfee today I did a complete scan and found a Generic!Artemis Trojan hiding down in Windows System 32 folder\Macromed\Shockwave 10\gt.exe The Macromed folder’s Date Modified was 8/23/08 which I take it to mean as date it was put on my system, so I wonder if it could have been the cause of my problems. I see a couple more exe files in the folder so I don’t know if McAfee got it all or not.

I guess I will need to do more research. I hope I have no more BSODs K

Solve : registry error preventing me from Win XP CD Recovery?

They have to be made from within Windows, so it's not your option. What does this XP CD look like ? ? Holograms all over it or Sharpie ? ?

I've never been unable to access the RC on a XP CD...holograms. It's the real deal.

I'm off to find someone who still has a floppy DISK drive so they can download the APPROPRIATE tool from

http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287#seagate

thanks for the help and I'll let you know how it goes! You can use bootable CD.Well, I did what you said and downloaded, burned and used SeaTools for DOS v1.10 (Text) for my hard drive.

It's a Seagate hard drive, model ST3120026A, with a SiS 963 controller and a SN of 5JT4SPWV. MAX LBA 120 GB

I did both the short and long scan and the hard drive passed.
SMART is supported but disabled. Should I try to enable it in the BIOS menu?

If both scans passed, what should I do now? I'd really rather not use the erase function if I can help it, I'd like to try to salvage my files if possible.I'm not sure, what to say at this point.
Bad CD? Bad CD drive?
Can you try that CD on another computer? It can't be a bad CD drive because you said both error messages were indicative of a corrupted registry. Are there any other handy-dandy files I could burn to a CD to boot with that could help with that?Unfortunately, Windows errors can't be read with 100% certainty.
Wait, maybe patio will come come up with some other thought.I sure appreciate your help so far.
I'm not giving up!You're welcome QUOTE from: cyberen on January 05, 2009, 05:11:26 PM

I tried the repair installation. I got to the step where I agreed to the license agreement and the darn 2nd error message showed up again. And I can't do a clean install because I need to get past the license agreement for that too! Any help?
So when you go to install a fresh copy of windows and press F8 to agree to the EULA you get the registry error message? That is very odd.
If I were you, I would slave the drive in another working machine, save all of the data and then format it.I'm going to try Knoppix first, as I've never installed a secondary hard drive before, and this CPU is screwed tight.

Update: Well Knoppix isn't working, it stalls on the "Boot from CD" message and eventually some buzzing sound emanates from the PC. I'll keep looking for IPO files to rescue CDs and in the meanwhile plan to install it as a slave Hard Drive to another PC.sorry for double-posting but the situation has improved.

I downloaded the recovery console from here:

http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/repair_xp.htm

and was able to access the C:/windows directory as well as DOS in general.

I tried copy&pasting my documents from the computer to my FLASH drive but I don't even know where the "my documents" is from DOS.
Also, I ran chkdsk but is there ANYTHING else I can do since the recovery console is what was suggested from the original error message?
Thank you, I feel a solution is close at hand.Follow the manual from here: http://icrontic.com/articles/repair_windows_xp, starting at

Solve : Invalid Drive: F:\??????

Answer»

Hey! I took home my office desktop and bought the software (netgear usb card) to access wireless internet from our Negear Wireless Router, after loading the CD-Rom, it begins the installation process but stops at the installing part and an error message pops up that reads this:

Error 1327. Invalid Drive: F:\

I don' t know what this means, we tried another CD-Rom (COMPUTER game) and it did the same thing but we can load CD (music) and it will read it and play it.
I may have a solution, but it involves editing the Registry. (Found it with the use of Google).
However, unless you know what you're doing when you edit the registry, I suggest PUTTING that aside for the moment.

Was F:\ always your CD Drive?

Can you try a System Restore to a few days before the problem? There isn't an F drive listed that I can find, the drive for CD-Roms is supposed to be D or E, i disabled this drive and then loaded the software again, it did not even read it at all then, so I went back and enabled that drive again, it will read it but when it begins the install portion that error message pops up. This is the 1st time I tried to install anything since I took the computer home so I am not sure how FAR back I should do the system restore. My son tried to install one of his computer games (that works on his laptop) and it gave him the same error message, he says he has never heard of an F drive. The system is Windows XP ProfessionalOk, right now, create a restore point.

Go to START --> All Programs --> Accessories --> System Tools --> System Restore.
Select Create a Restore Point and click Next.
Name it Backup or whatever you wish.
It will then create the restore point.

Now close the System Restore window and go to Start --> Run and type regedit and press Enter.
Navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
Do not change anything.

Now compare your window with my attached picture. Are there any differences?

Looks nice - just a thought or two!

a) If you can, get a discrete video adapter with 512 MB of it's own memory.

b) If not a) and you stay with the built-in video, be advised that the video will "share" system RAM (this is the polite way of saying,"Will steal RAM from the main memory and reduce the amount available to run programs"), therefore, increase RAM to 3-4GB.

c) If you will mainly use the laptop plugged in (i.e., battery life is not critical), consider a 7200 rpm hard drive instead of the 5400 rpm. Plus = much quicker hard drive response (opening programs, files; saving files; installing programs; running VIRUS checks), on the order of 10 - 20% faster; minus = lower battery life (not drastic), slightly more heat.

Best of luck!

I know - maybe the wrong choice of words (discrete video adapter), but laptops have video choices. I was specifically thinking of the GeForce 8600M series or the 8400M series (256 MB). I don't know what Dell offers but HP offers several choices.I see...all clear I was just thinking of running Aero without bogging down the rest of the system.

Solve : sound scheme in XP?

Answer»

Hi out there! I'm new to this site and found it very helpful, but have a question that I couldn't find.

I'm also new at computers and learning as I go. I recently had to have the replacement of Win2000 to XP system program, but in doing so I have no more sound. There is no sound device detected.

I was investigating on my own and WOUND up at the "Sound and Audio Device Properties" and made a change under the Sounds tab. The Sound scheme was set on a blank space and I changed it to "Windows default" without saving the old setting. Now under Sound scheme I have two choices instead of three.

Here's my QUESTIONS: Is there away to reverse this? If not, have I made a major error? What does it all mean ANYWAY? And if you have any other input about the lost Sound device let me know that as well. Thank you!You will likely need to find the correct DRIVER for your sound card or integrated sound controller. I'd try at the manufacturers web site under support and drivers, then search for Sound Drivers and chose the one for XP. If the computer is older the MFR may not have a XP driver for it and the easy fix may be to buy a new sound card if a desktop computer and install it vs try to find a generic driver that is XP compatible and supports your sound chipset. If it is a laptop, your options are far less since I am unaware of any sound upgrade or replacements for laptops.

Solve : Taking ownership of Windows 7 Files using XP?

Answer»

Okay

Installed Win_7 on a completely separate HDD (seems to WORK ok except possible USB Pen drive corrption and failure to recognise a old PROMISE RAID Card

Issue is

When I hooked up the Win_7 Drive (as a slave) to my MAIN XP install I can't get the Owner tab in the sharing and security context menu of the Documents and Settings folder of the Win_7 install. So I took ownership of the whole drive. Now I just get an error saying that folder inaccessible!

So does this mean anyone with a failed MB is now f****d?

CHECK this:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421

and this:

also try using the same username/password on BOTH SYSTEMS...

Good Luck

Solve : No safemode options?

Answer»

Hi there

Tried to install a new graphics card recently, but got an .dll error message. I forgot to deinstall previous driver, so thought was deinstall current driver take out new card put in old card deinstall driver and new card in again.

But forgot to decrease resolution!!! Booted up as normal and all that COMES up on my screen is a message saying out of range!
No problem i thought, and tried to start in safe mode (F8 thing) but all that comes up is a selection where I want to boot from (floppy, dvd 1, dvd 2 or Hdd) and no matter what selection is it just starts up as normal and I still can't see a thing on my screen!!!
Any help anyone???
Windows XP MCEAs soon as you PRESS the Power Button, keep tapping F8.

If you get that hardware selection screen again, select HDD and press Enter.

As soon as you hit Enter, keep tapping F8 again.Did you try holding down the left shift key and F5? Sometimes that works when F8 doesn't.Yepp, F8 worked CHEERS Carbon, seems I was a bit to eager...

But now I tried to install new card (put card in and driver cd) and all I get is a black screen with error message "no Signal detected" on either ports - onboard VGA and Card.
What to do now?Not sure.....maybe it's because i'm tired (very late here), but I think it's gotta be related to your 'Out Of Range' problem.

Do you by any chance have another MONITOR you can try?I had a picture on low to medium resolution on onboard VGA after start in safemode...
but even that is GONE...
have a think about it and tell me if the solution comes to you over night All right, back on my feet.

You said you put a new video card in the machine?
What happens if you go into Safe Mode with the old video card?try safe mode with command prompt ...with F8 that should allow u to change the resolution and then move on with it /

Solve : XP64 Drivers for Satellite L300 laptop?

Answer»

Alright, so since I have some spare time on my hands, I decided to customize my laptop to suite my needs far better.

Basically, I want it to (ideally) triple boot between XP Pro 32-Bit, XP Pro 64-Bit, and Vista ultimate.

I have all THREE OS's.

I have the drivers for Vista from the Toshiba Site, and a package of drivers for XP 32-bit, but I cannot seem to find any 64-bit Drivers for the laptop.

I have a 250GB HD, any suggestions as per the sizes of the partitions? Should I perhaps scrap one of the installs to make more space for my other two?

if I cannot find proper 64-bit drivers for XP, I'll scrap the 64-bit install... Vista Ultimate X64 should be enough for 64-bit computing, if necessary. As far as the drive goes 60/90/90 should serve you well with the smallest for XP 32bit.
There are 2 drivers i used on my Vista Ultimate64 bit BUILD that were 64 bit XP drivers and they work fine.
As far as finding them check to see if there are any of the manuf. laptop Forums etc. ...
This Vista Forum has a driver section that may yield some results.
Most apps would only have to be installed on one partition and can be ran as is from each OS...this will save some drive space...i still run plenty of my 32 bit apps from the XP partition in Vista.

Best of Luck...sounds like a fun project.update: successfully slipstreamed XP with the Intel SATA storage Drivers, and installed XP.

I've decided on only 40GB for the 32-bit XP, and might scrap 64-Bit XP, depending on Driver support.

Think I'll install each OS and get all the drivers installed before installing the next one.

looks to me like the Realtek wireless is going to be a PITA to get working with each one.

if I do scrap the XP 64 install, I'll likely USE some of my space to store the 32-bit Programs for each one, via some tweaks to the registry to change the file path for each OS to point to the storage drive; larger programs nothwithstanding (those that copy physically different files based on OS being prime candidates to not be installed this way).

basic purpose? Speed comparisions. The laptop ran beautifully, but it's performance was something to be desired, running at 3/4 the fps speed of my desktop, which is a Single-core 1.6Ghz. Wouldn't be a big deal, if the game in question wasn't the generally "antiquated" Quake 3...

Not too concerned about Vista Drivers, since I know they exist(installed with the machine, after all); not so sure for XP 64 drivers, though.I would think the VistaX64 drivers would run for XPX64...what a perfect opportunity to find out... Alright; I'll do a install just for you

Once I get the drivers for 32-bit set up. networking drivers giving me grief.

Their installs will run, but upon rebooting; no wireless dialog, no "connection unplugged" notifications...

...

now it freezes on boot.

This could be a long experiment I'll be here for ya... heh, I outsmarted those darn drivers.

Just had to install them manually, worked like a charm

Now to get started with the XP64 install. Might have to set SATA to compatibility mode for this one.

Anyways... here goes. Hope I don't hoop my nice XP-32 Install success, for the most part.

Not only did I get 64-Bit XP install, but most of the XP drivers I downloaded contain 64-bit drivers as well.

Just have to get the rest of the drivers properly installed, and then the final hurdle of Vista Ultimate.I think a drum roll is in ORDER here......XP 32-bit, Installed, all drivers.
XP 64-bit, Installed, all drivers (except modem)

Vista Ultimate- workin on the driver situation.

All three multi-booting properly.

I think I'll declare this experiment a success

Excellent !
P.S. Don't rely on Ultimate's image backup feature...

Solve : .....exe is not a valid win32 application!!! error?

Answer»

hello again, I just can't get enough of you guys
I have 2 questions:

1st Q: I just formatted my laptop because I had the "Operating system not found error" the people who fixed said that it just needed formatting, was that the right answer to that error??

2nd Q: after formatting I couldn't download anymore!! all my downloads keep cutting in the middle and giving me this error message "C:\program files....exe is not a valid win32 application" it was just formatted so I don't think that I have a virus or something!!

I have windows XP SP2, I use IE as my browser (and I don't want to change it to firefox )

thnx..After reinstalling did you reinstall all your MBoard drivers ? ?yes, and I did a full system scan and no virus was detected..How do you connect ?
Wireless
Router involved
Direct

I'd still DLoad and try Firefox anyways if you don't want to use it...it will determine if this is an IE issue...
Can you get email service ? ?but i'v always used IE and I didn't have any problems!!
I connect through wireless router..plz ppl, I NEED help!As patio said, download Firefox, and we'll se, if this is browser problem, or something else.Quote
